Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Good day, everybody. We are locked and loaded once again
- 0:13to bring you the latest edition of Birds Weekly. It
- 0:15is powered by the inside of the Birds Network. That man
- 0:19right there is the Hall of Famer himself. Ray, didn't
- 0:21you under a gun? And Ray, I don't know about you,
- 0:24but that Eagles Chiefs game didn't play out anything like
- 0:29I thought it would play.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Out exactly the same.
- 0:32Speaker 3: I You know, every week leading up to a game,
- 0:37you think about how the game's gonna play out, you know, tactically, strategically,
- 0:42where are they going to go, what are they going
- 0:43to do, What are they gonna try to do, what
- 0:45are they going to be able to do? We all,
- 0:48we all play the game before they play it, and
- 0:51then it rarely turns out that way.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Good teams, bad teams. It almost doesn't matter.
- 0:57Speaker 3: And you know what, I think that's part of the
- 0:58beauty of pro football just just it's there's no script
- 1:02to it.
- 1:03Speaker 2: It just it has a life of its own.
- 1:06Speaker 3: The one thing, and there were a lot of things
- 1:08about this game that surprised me. The one thing, but
- 1:11the one thing that didn't surprise me, and I think
- 1:13you and I both said this last week, was it
- 1:16wasn't going to be easy. And so many people, so
- 1:20many people I talked to last week, said, oh, the
- 1:22Chiefs are done.
- 1:24Speaker 2: You know, they're they're over the hill. They've got old players.
- 1:27You saw them in the game in Brazil.
- 1:29Speaker 3: They they were you know, they couldn't they couldn't get
- 1:31pressure on the quarterback. Herbert picked them apart. The Eagles
- 1:34are going to blow that team out. And I you
- 1:36and I both said last week, Oh really, Oh yeah,
- 1:39you really think the Kansas City Chiefs We're going to
- 1:42roll over in that stadium and let the Eagles beat
- 1:45them and fall it to zero and two. No, no,
- 1:49I thought the Eagles were going to win.
- 1:50Speaker 2: But I absolutely, I absolutely.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Thought it was going to be exactly this kind of game,
- 1:55a real rock fight, And that's what it was.
- 1:58Speaker 1: You know what, right, if I compile my note to
- 2:00get ready for our podcast for this particular week, you know,
- 2:03there was a lot of strategic points in this game.
- 2:06But the one thing that really jumped out to me
- 2:08was if anybody had told me that the Philadelphia Eagles
- 2:13would go into Arrowheads Stadium, one of the most hostile
- 2:16stadiums in all of the NFL, to play a Kansas
- 2:20City Chiefs team that doesn't lose at home often, and
- 2:23Patrick Mahomes has never started a season zero to two
- 2:26while racking up less than two hundred and twenty yards
- 2:29of offense rate. I would take that bet a hundred
- 2:32times and then.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Some absolutely, you know.
- 2:35Speaker 3: I mean, there are a lot of things about this
- 2:37that just didn't figure, but that's the way it played out.
- 2:41And you know, I think that one of the things
- 2:46that I don't think it's I don't think the Eagles
- 2:47are surprised by this. I mean, when you when you
- 2:50come into a season and you're the defending champ, there
- 2:53are no easy weeks. You know, there's there's no look aheads,
- 2:57there's none of that. I mean, you're gonna get who
- 3:00you're playing, from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Tennessee Titans.
- 3:05I mean you're going to get their best shot every week,
- 3:09and that's what you're seeing. And I think that the
- 3:14fact that, first of all, you've got that's just a
- 3:16fact of life. But the other part of it is
- 3:18you have a really tough schedule on top of it. Yeah,
- 3:21I mean every week is every week is going to
- 3:23be you know, bare knuckles in the back alley, fight it,
- 3:27fight it out. And you know the thing is the Eagles.
- 3:31The Dallas game was not an easy game either at
- 3:33home against a team that I think is no more
- 3:36than mediocre. It was still a close game in the
- 3:38fourth quarter. This game out there in a tough environment
- 3:42was right there at the end. I think, I think
- 3:46it's going that's the kind of season it's going to be.
- 3:48I think every week is going to be this kind
- 3:50of game. And I think I don't. I think the
- 3:53Eagles are prepared for it. I mean, you know, Nick
- 3:55Sirianni has talked about it a lot. The players have
- 3:58talked about it a lot. Yeah, they even though they
- 4:00don't like to use the term defending the championship, in
- 4:03the eyes of everybody they're playing, that's exactly what it
- 4:05comes down to. And the Eagles have to be prepared
- 4:08for that challenge. And so far, two weeks in, you're
- 4:10two and zero.
- 4:11Speaker 1: You know what, Ray I went back and looked at
- 4:13Kansas City's record from twenty twenty four, including the playoffs.
- 4:18They won eleven games by seven points or less. They
- 4:23kept people on the edge of their seats each and
- 4:25every week. They had people biting the nails, checking their
- 4:29pulses and when you look at this Eagles team, two
- 4:32games in, they've won two games by a grand total
- 4:34of seven points, and in both games they could have
- 4:40very easily been zero to two. Have there not been
- 4:44one or two defenditive things that happened in the games
- 4:47that turned the tide in their favor. Now, when you
- 4:51look at Jalen Hurts in this particular game, fifteen of
- 4:55twenty two, one hundred and one yards, no testdowns, more importantly,
- 5:02no turnovers, no interceptions, Ray, people keep yelling about his numbers.
- 5:08I don't care about his numbers rate. All the man
- 5:12does is find a way to win games or put
- 5:14his team in a position to win games.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Absolutely, I mean, and there were there are a couple
- 5:21of moments and you and I said this last week.
- 5:24I mean, he's never he's never going to put up
- 5:28monster numbers. So that's just that's just not the way
- 5:31he plays the game. Uh. You know, he's never going
- 5:34to lead the league in in the statistics, he's never
- 5:37going to lead the league in all those fantasy football categories.
- 5:42But all he's going to do is make the plays
- 5:44that allow you to win. And even though each of
- 5:46these two games, the Dallas game and this game passing
- 5:51numbers were nothing really abusial, but when you needed but
- 5:56when you needed a play, all the question about his
- 5:59arm is strong enough, is it accurate enough? Last week
- 6:02it was a deep shot to Dotson that you know
- 6:05that you can't throw a ball any better, and that
- 6:07just drops it right in there at a big moment.
- 6:10And then yesterday same thing. I mean, you got the
- 6:13Chiefs who got a rush right in his face. It's
- 6:15thirty to ten, close game, second half, You're trying to
- 6:18sustain a drive and he lays that ball up and
- 6:21DeVante Smith makes the great adjustment, comes back, makes the
- 6:24catch and sets up the final push push touchdown that
- 6:28sort of ice the game. I think that that's kind
- 6:32of the way he is. You know, he's not gonna
- 6:34he's not going to throw for four hundred and fifty yards.
- 6:37Speaker 2: He's not.
- 6:38Speaker 3: He's but you know, at those moments in the game
- 6:41when a big play is required, he's going to make
- 6:45a big play and ultimately he's going to come out ahead.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I mean, this team is won what is it, eighteen
- 6:50of their last nineteen games.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean that doesn't happen by accident, nor does
- 6:57it happen with average quarterbacking. You know, you only put
- 7:01together a streak like that if you have a quarterback
- 7:03who knows what he's doing. And believe me, this guy
- 7:06knows what he's doing, you.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Know, Ray I thought that passed, that particular pass was
- 7:10his best pass of the day, to be quite honest
- 7:12with you, I mean, he knew Kansas City was coming
- 7:15after him on that third and ten situation. And a
- 7:17lot of times quarterbacks, and I'm talking veteran quarterbacks, when
- 7:21they see a situation like that and they feel the heat,
- 7:24a lot of them was simply chucking duck, you know,
- 7:26and avoid to hit. This man stood tall in the
- 7:29saddle loft in a beautiful ball. Devonte Smith was covered by
- 7:33one of the best cornerbacks in the game in Trent McDuffie,
- 7:36made the body adjustment and brought it down to set
- 7:38up for that defining touchdown. You know what everybody talks
- 7:43about Jalen emerging as a pocket passer. I think that
- 7:47particular play defines the fact that he has matured and
- 7:52arrived as a pocket passer. He's not just this running quarterback,
- 7:56He's not just this scramley quarterback. But he can stand
- 7:59in there tall when the pressure is bearing down on it.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Yeah, he's really developed that part of his game.
- 8:05Speaker 3: I mean, that patience and that presence in the pocket
- 8:08to be able to hang in there and make those
- 8:11kinds of throws which you have to make to win
- 8:14games in the NFL, because I mean you can have mobility,
- 8:17I mean you can be able to run and get
- 8:19out of the pocket and make throws and also turn
- 8:22it up the field and get first down. And he
- 8:24can do all that, but you still have to make
- 8:27those kinds of throws. You know, they are still part
- 8:31of the of the NFL quarterbacking playbook. And he's when
- 8:36he first came up into the league that was really
- 8:37kind of what he had to learn was to make
- 8:40those plays inside the pocket. And he's shown you now
- 8:44pretty much week after week. Not that he does it
- 8:46all the time, but when he has to do it,
- 8:47he can do it. And yesterday he did it in
- 8:49the spot that really was critical.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Right. I look at DeVonta Smith. He was his little, thin,
- 8:54wispy guy. Takes a lot of big hits, but he's
- 8:57like that old commercial, takes the licking, but keep on
- 8:59ticket his body control. It's simply a beautiful thing. To
- 9:03watch when you have your momentum going full board one
- 9:06way the way he can Piro went and come back
- 9:08to a football. It's just it's a beautiful thing to
- 9:12watch because you have a lot of great receivers that
- 9:15do similar things. But here's a guy. He's not the
- 9:18biggest guy, he's not the most physical guy, but he
- 9:20uses every attribute that God has given him to the
- 9:23fullest advantage.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Yeah, he's he just has a great sense of where
- 9:30the ball is to go get it. And that was
- 9:33a you're right. I mean he's covered by one of
- 9:35the best corners in the league in that situation, one
- 9:38on one down the field and McDuffie will win that
- 9:41most of the time, absolutely, and he was in position
- 9:43to this time. But DeVante Smith saw where the ball
- 9:47was found, it tracted and then just dip back inside
- 9:51and got himself in a position where it actually it
- 9:54actually looks like an easy catch, but of course it isn't.
- 9:58Speaker 2: But I mean it came at.
- 9:59Speaker 3: An absolutely time and Hurts was you know, he was
- 10:03pressure was right on them and he just laid it.
- 10:06It was one of those I'm just going to lay
- 10:08it up there and trust my guys going to go
- 10:09get it and and he did, and it was a
- 10:12big play. I mean, if you're if you're trying to
- 10:14measure big plays, chunk plays, whatever you want to call it.
- 10:18The Eagles aren't really that kind of team, you know,
- 10:21but in situations where they need to make those kinds
- 10:24of plays when they called for, they can do that.
- 10:27Speaker 2: And yesterday was I mean, you had that was one
- 10:30you just.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Had to grind out. I mean, you just grind that
- 10:32one out. And you know the Chiefs, you know, right
- 10:36now they're zero and two, and that's a battle, you know.
- 10:39I I look at September early season pro football, the
- 10:44way it is, the way the league is set up now,
- 10:46the way teams go through preseason, the way teams go
- 10:49through training camp. You know, most teams don't play their ones.
- 10:52They don't play their starters. Some of them don't. Don't
- 10:55even think. Guys don't even practice all that much. I
- 10:57mean the Eagles this summer. If you went out I
- 10:58mean a J. Brown practice half the time much. You
- 11:01didn't play the games, for sure, but didn't even practice
- 11:04that much. So there's no way you're going to go
- 11:06into the season clicking on all cylinders. You're just not
- 11:10so this time of the year, these kinds of games.
- 11:13You know, this is not this is not ideal hot
- 11:17take football. You know what I mean in the society
- 11:20that we live in today, the way journalists are and
- 11:22the way people on talk radio are, in the way
- 11:24the writers are, and everybody wants to make these snap
- 11:27judgments about everything. You know, what's right, what's wrong? Well,
- 11:31right now, you're not that team yet, you're but what
- 11:34you have to do in these weeks as you moving forward,
- 11:38they're going to get better week by week, you know
- 11:40they will. But what you have to do in these
- 11:42weeks while you're still putting everything together with the new
- 11:45offensive coordinator, that's part of it. While you're putting us together,
- 11:48the key just win the game.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Just win these games.
- 11:53Speaker 3: The thing you can't afford to do is like lose
- 11:56a couple of these games and then put yourself behind
- 11:59the second half of the year. You're trying to dig
- 12:01your way out of a hole, you know, you know,
- 12:04I mean, the coach is down there today with the
- 12:05players in the meeting rooms. They're pointing out all the
- 12:08things that they did wrong, and they're saying, we got
- 12:10to do this better, we got to do that better. Way,
- 12:12and they're right, they do. But the fact of the
- 12:15matter is you got the two wins. Okay, so you
- 12:17just keep stacking the wins. Now, get those wins, and
- 12:21then week by week get your game better so that
- 12:23by the second half of the year you're where you
- 12:25want to be in terms of the standings, but you're
- 12:27also playing better football leaden end of the postseason.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Hey, I'm all about the good, the bad, the ugly
- 12:33being accompanied by a w. If that's the way you're
- 12:36going to play in the entire season, so be it now.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Me either.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Hey, look, when when you look at Patrick Mahomes, it
- 12:43was like at times one playing against eleven. I mean,
- 12:46he he did everything he could possibly do. You could
- 12:48tell he was shorthanded short two premire wide receivers or
- 12:52as she Rice and of course They've are worthy. Do
- 12:55you think if you had to have those two receivers
- 12:56at his disposal the outcome might have been a little
- 12:59bit different.
- 13:01Speaker 3: You can't say no, I mean, I mean, there is
- 13:06not that Hollywood Brown and Juju Smith Schuster are bad receivers.
- 13:09Speaker 2: They're not, but they're not Rice and Worthy.
- 13:13Speaker 3: I mean, so it became a whole different proposition when
- 13:16those two guys couldn't play it. I mean, I know
- 13:19that late last week there were reports coming out of
- 13:22Kansas City that Worthy was practicing on a limited basis,
- 13:26and I really didn't think they were going to play him.
- 13:29I really didn't, and I'm kind of glad they didn't
- 13:33because I definitely, definitely, I definitely think it helped the
- 13:36Eagles cause.
- 13:38Speaker 2: But you know, you.
- 13:39Speaker 3: See with the Chiefs right now where they are as
- 13:41a team, I get some issues, they really do. And
- 13:45this is two games that played now and in both games,
- 13:48Patrick Mahomes is their leading rusher. Now how many weeks
- 13:52is that going to be? I mean, the way they're
- 13:54running game looks right now half the games he might
- 13:57be their leading rusher. And that's that is not a
- 14:00formula for a team to go deep into the playoffs
- 14:03or win a championship. You know, Patrick Mahomes he needs that.
- 14:07He's a great player, for sure, but he needs all
- 14:09parts of that offense functioning right now. And they just
- 14:14Pachaco and Hunt, they just they just aren't getting it.
- 14:18Speaker 2: And the only even are getting on the ground is
- 14:20what Mahomes can give them.
- 14:21Speaker 3: And week after a week after a week that's that's
- 14:24gonna be a hard thing to sustain.
- 14:26Speaker 1: You know, if there's one thing Andy Reid has been
- 14:29known for, it's always been building solid offensive lines.
- 14:33Speaker 2: And I think the offensive.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Line right now is the biggest problem is starting two
- 14:36rookie players. They have three holdovers from a season ago,
- 14:39but two rookie players, and I don't think there's a
- 14:42continuity and the fluidity in this offensive line. Yet they're
- 14:45not opening holes in a running game. Mahomes are scrambling
- 14:48for his life. How many times do we see him
- 14:49where he barely had time to set its beat, just
- 14:52like the Super Bowl had to take off and run
- 14:54and you know, hey, whatever happens again, the city happens
- 14:58to him.
- 14:58Speaker 2: But I'm just shocked that their offense, the.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Line has been as porous as it has been because
- 15:02the Chargers owned them along the offensive line also a
- 15:05week ago.
- 15:06Speaker 3: Yeah, it's you know, that was clearly the difference in
- 15:11the Super Bowl game. I mean that was where you know,
- 15:13I mean the Eagles. The Eagles dominated the Chiefs, but
- 15:16where the domination started was right there. It was with
- 15:19the Eagles defensive front against the Chiefs offensive line.
- 15:22Speaker 2: I mean, they just they just crushed them.
- 15:24Speaker 3: And in the off season, all the conversation was, well,
- 15:28you know the Chiefs are they recognized the problem. Now,
- 15:30I mean they kind of got away with it in
- 15:31the regular season, but they got exposed in the postseason.
- 15:34So you're going to see that, Andy Reid, this whole
- 15:36off season is going to be about rebuilding and reinventing.
- 15:40Speaker 2: That offensive line. And they did bring in some new guys.
- 15:43Speaker 3: They drafted some young guys, but I mean two weeks in,
- 15:47it kind of looks the same.
- 15:49Speaker 2: And I mean penalties, stupid penalties.
- 15:53Speaker 3: I mean when they went for it on that one
- 15:55fourth down in the second half, I mean, Humphrey, who
- 16:00I think is the best player on that line. I
- 16:02think he's one of the better centers in the league.
- 16:05You know, he goes the wrong way and the play
- 16:07blows up and they don't convert the fourth down. I mean,
- 16:09right now, there's even they're good players in the offensive
- 16:12line aren't playing well and the result is you got
- 16:15Patrick Mahomes out there.
- 16:16Speaker 1: He's got nowhere to go with the football. Yeah, I
- 16:19think that was not a character for Andy Reid too.
- 16:21I Mean, we know he's the gambler, he'll take risk,
- 16:24but at that stage of the game, the score was
- 16:27tied ten to ten. I believe he goes for it
- 16:29the fourth and one in his own territory and it
- 16:35gets stuffed, and of course that led to the Eagles
- 16:37go ahead field goal and they never looked back from
- 16:40that point on. I thought there was a lot of
- 16:42character for Andy at that point of a game to
- 16:45just basically give the momentum back to the opposition in
- 16:47his backyard.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Yeah, very out of character, I mean from the coach
- 16:52that we knew in Philadelphia.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Yeah, there were situations.
- 16:55Speaker 3: How many times were we saying, he's got to go
- 16:59for it now, can't kick the ball away, he might
- 17:01not get it back. And most of the time he
- 17:03didn't remember that. But he in that sense, he played
- 17:07it very much by the book. You know, he's not.
- 17:11Over the last ten years, defens offensive philosophy, fourth down stuff.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Has really changed.
- 17:18Speaker 3: I mean, coaches, you have a lot of these new coaches,
- 17:20a lot of these young coaches with the analytics guys
- 17:23upstairs talking in their ears, telling him, go for it,
- 17:26go for it, go for it. And we're seeing a
- 17:28whole different mindset about how to play fourth down. And
- 17:32Andy's maybe a little bit more inclined to do it
- 17:35than he was back in the day, but still, given
- 17:39where they were there, that field position and everything, I
- 17:42was very surprised. I was very surprised. And it turns
- 17:45up they run it and they didn't get it well.
- 17:48Speaker 1: As you and I discussed last week leading up to
- 17:50this game, the one thing that did not surprise us
- 17:53was the fact that we knew Kansas City defensively was
- 17:56going to make the concerted effort to stack the line
- 17:59of scrimmage and keep Saque from getting one hundred yards.
- 18:02He had eighty eight. He's getting closer to that sentry mark.
- 18:04But I think there's something missing from the Eagles offensive
- 18:09line as well, whether it's sustaining blocks, whether it's somebody's
- 18:16missing something.
- 18:16Speaker 2: On the calls.
- 18:18Speaker 1: But in two games, that offensive line hasn't been as
- 18:21dominant as I thought it would be. Now they face
- 18:24they faced defensive stacking the line of scrimmage a year ago,
- 18:27and they were still able to blow people off the ball.
- 18:30DA Dallas is not a great defensive front. They were
- 18:33able to hold their own in the trenches. Kansas City
- 18:36is a very good defensive front. They were able to
- 18:38hold their own into trenches from your perspective and maybe
- 18:42I'm missing something, but what is missing from this Eagles
- 18:45offensive line right now?
- 18:48Speaker 3: I haven't had a chance to go back and rewatch
- 18:50this game, but I want to and I will, just
- 18:54to see exactly that what's happening up front, because when
- 18:56I went back and watched the Dallas game, the frankly,
- 19:02the Eagles offensive line, I'm not sugarcoat.
- 19:05Speaker 2: They didn't play well. And you're not.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Used to saying that about the Eagles offensive line because
- 19:11they've they've been.
- 19:12Speaker 2: So good for so long.
- 19:15Speaker 3: But in the Dallas game, they didn't. They just did
- 19:18flat didn't play well. You know, my lot of missed
- 19:22a couple missed, a couple of blocks that he normally makes. Uh.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Lane Johnson, who like never makes a mistake, made some Dickerson.
- 19:31Speaker 3: I think we both know Dickerson's playing through some stuff Physically,
- 19:35he's not one hundred percent even close to it. I
- 19:38give him credit for gutting it out, but it's it's
- 19:40clearly he's not the player right now that he's been
- 19:43in the past.
- 19:45Speaker 2: And and Jurgens against Dallas, I thought he.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Played poorly, to be honest with you, Uh, the guy
- 19:51who played the best on that offensive line was was
- 19:54steam which you know, when you look back on it,
- 19:57he's the only one of the five that actually played preseason.
- 20:01I mean they played him some in the preseason and
- 20:03I think as a result, you know, he's right now
- 20:06maybe a little more ready to play than they were
- 20:09in Week one. Now that'll change as we move forward.
- 20:12I mean Milata and Johnson and those guys, they'll start
- 20:16playing like the players that been. But Week one, they
- 20:20did not have a good game, and it was I
- 20:22was partly reflected in what was happening with with Barkley. Now,
- 20:25Barkley didn't have a big game against the Chiefs, but
- 20:30I was he got his eighty eight yards. Now they
- 20:32were a tough eighty eight yards. Oh goodness, there there
- 20:35was no chunk plays in there. I mean he fought
- 20:38for every one of those yards, but he got him.
- 20:40But that's the way it's going to be every week.
- 20:42I mean, teams are going to come in with the
- 20:43idea that we're going to try and stop Barkley. We're
- 20:46not gonna let Barkley run over us. And you know
- 20:50that that's what the Rams are talking about. They got
- 20:52a double dose of it last year. Once in a
- 20:54regular season. It once in the playoffs when Barkley just
- 20:56ran him out of the stadium. Are they going to
- 20:59let that happen again?
- 21:00Speaker 2: I don't know. So I think the I think it's
- 21:03going to beat.
- 21:03Speaker 3: The challenge is going to be there for the Eagles
- 21:05offensive line to up their game this week. Rams, because
- 21:10I'll tell you, Derek, I really think that the Rams
- 21:14are better than anybody that was have played so far.
- 21:17I think the Rams are better than the Chiefs.
- 21:20Speaker 2: I really do.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Now.
- 21:21Speaker 3: I know they beat two not terrific teams. You know,
- 21:25the Texans and the Titans are what they are. But
- 21:28I think that I think the Rams are good and
- 21:30I think that I think they're better than the Chiefs.
- 21:33And even though the games here, I think it is
- 21:34gonna be a tough game for the Eagles.
- 21:36Speaker 4: Sports are all about competition. Every snap, every possession, every
- 21:40clutch moment matters. That same energy is what one v

- 22:45Speaker 1: And I do believe the Rams are also going to
- 22:46try to emulate some of the same things that Dallas data,
- 22:49some of the same things that the Chiefs did to
- 22:51try to slow down this Eagles offense. And when you
- 22:53talk about this Eagles offense right second week in a row,
- 22:56they saw a lot of zone coverage from the Chiefs defense.
- 23:00And it's still perplexing to me because this offense is intact.
- 23:05It's not like you have a lot of new components
- 23:07in this offense like you do on the defensive side
- 23:09of the football. But I don't understand why they're not
- 23:12killing teams with the underneath routes. More more drag routes,
- 23:17more stopping go curl routes. I don't get it right.
- 23:19It's like they're playing right into a defense's hands. Even
- 23:22with Dallas got it out of there. You have two
- 23:26number one receivers, you have a decent backup in Calcutara.
- 23:29But I don't understand why they're not finding more open
- 23:32zones underneath to dic indunk your way down the field.
- 23:36And it's costing them yardage, it's costing them time, possession
- 23:41of time on the clock, and it's allowing the opposition
- 23:44to make games closer than what I think they should be.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I would agree with that. I would agree with that,
- 23:51And you certainly have to look the play of Smith
- 23:54was a huge playing the game.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Yes, at a moment when you had to have it,
- 23:58you got it, But throughout the game, no, I think
- 24:03there has to be more you just watching them now
- 24:06in both games again that made enough place to win.
- 24:11The quarterback has not made big mistakes and he hadn't
- 24:13turned the ball over, which is all everything you want
- 24:16to do. But watching them now. I just don't feel
- 24:21there's a rhythm to the offense. There's just just you
- 24:24get a feeling when a team is just is just
- 24:26moving in rhythm. You can just see it, you can
- 24:28feel it, and they haven't found that yet. You know,
- 24:32they get to play here, they get to play there,
- 24:34but there's no there's no feel that they're that they've
- 24:37got that kind of rhythm going, which maybe isn't a
- 24:41terrible surprise because you know, again you didn't play and
- 24:44these guys didn't play in the preseason, and there probably
- 24:47is a little bit of a feeling out process with
- 24:49the new offensive coordinator calling the plays. There's probably some
- 24:53stuff they're needing to work out, and you know, I
- 24:56think they can get there, but they're not there right now. Listen,
- 24:59we all saw this team last year when they got
- 25:02it rolling. I mean you you could just feel it.
- 25:05I Mean, there was just a there was a pace
- 25:07that they were playing at and a lot of it
- 25:09was Barkley ripping off big plays, but they weren't all
- 25:12sixty seventy yarders. He got his share, but I mean
- 25:15a lot of it was the fours, the fives, and
- 25:18you know that just kept the chains moving and set
- 25:20up the inside pass as the routes, the digs, the curls,
- 25:24the colin player you're talking about to both Smith and Brown,
- 25:27who run those routes very well. Yes, that's that's the
- 25:30stuff that they need to get back to, because that's
- 25:32really who they are as a team.
- 25:34Speaker 1: You know.
- 25:35Speaker 2: And I think it's I think it's just a matter
- 25:37of finding it. You know, it's there. The players are there.
- 25:41We know that. And I don't I don't want to
- 25:43blame the offensive coordinator. I don't think it's that.
- 25:46Speaker 3: I just think it's I just think it's this team
- 25:48who didn't do a whole lot of live stuff all summer,
- 25:51just trying to just trying to get it get itself together.
- 25:55Speaker 2: And this would be a good week to.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Do it because the Rams are the Rams are playing
- 26:02really good right now, you know, and Matthew Stafford's playing
- 26:05really good, and uh Pooka is a terrific receiver. The
- 26:08addition of Devontae Adams, as you know, gives them another
- 26:12big weapon there there, and they're certainly.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Coming in here motivated. Uh And the Eagles ended their
- 26:19season last year and they're still feeling that.
- 26:21Speaker 3: So I think this is going to be. I think
- 26:23it's gonna be a tough game. I was a little
- 26:25bit surprised. I don't know what I was thinking in
- 26:27terms of the point spread. Yeah, when I opened today
- 26:29at four and Eagles four and a half, that was
- 26:32a little bit more generous than I thought, given how
- 26:34good the Rams have looked. I know the Eagles are
- 26:37the champs and they're two to zero, but again, I
- 26:40guess we're kind of saying what we did last week,
- 26:42don't count these guys out because I think they're a
- 26:45dangerous opponent. Even though it's here, I think the Rams
- 26:47come in as a dangerous opponent.
- 26:49Speaker 1: And I'll tell you another thing the Eagles are thankful
- 26:51for is that the tush Puss was given new life
- 26:54in twenty twenty five. They ran it seven times Sunday
- 26:58against the Chiefs. But the one thing that stood out
- 27:01right on the on that that that the goldline call.
- 27:05They were clearly the two guards jumped before the ball
- 27:09was snapped, and the referees missed it. That could have
- 27:12been a turning point in the game because that would
- 27:14have moved the ball back five yards. I am shocked
- 27:16the refs never missed that. They missed both guards jumping
- 27:20before the.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Snap, I know, and you saw Andy was livid, yes,
- 27:25and rightly so, I mean they were clear. I mean
- 27:29I wasn't even close. I mean, I was amazed that
- 27:33that didn't get called.
- 27:34Speaker 3: But here's one of the things that I'm thinking about
- 27:37as a result of that, that they were going to
- 27:41be the teams in the league that want to get
- 27:43rid of the tush push yep. And there's a bunch
- 27:45of them, and we know that the bunch of them
- 27:47want to get it out. They have to find a
- 27:51good argument for why to get it out. Okay, they
- 27:53can't just say they're good at it, we're not that. No,
- 27:57you need to have a really good case, make a
- 27:58really good case for the to do it. Last year,
- 28:01they tried the injury thing, Oh, it's a high injury play. Well,
- 28:05then they said the Eagles presented that nobody's gotten.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Hurt running this. Oh okay, well that argument. So they
- 28:10got to find a new argument.
- 28:11Speaker 3: So I could see I could see the new argument
- 28:15being it's an impossible play to officiate. Yeah, it's too
- 28:20hard for the officials see what's going on in there.
- 28:23It's not fair play because the officials can't call it accurately.
- 28:27That could be the argument this year, because they know
- 28:29the injury thing didn't work, We've got to come up
- 28:31with something else. They could start a whole thing now,
- 28:34building a case that the play is too hard for
- 28:37the officials to officiate. That's why it should be taken out.
- 28:41Don't be surprised if that conversation starts.
- 28:44Speaker 1: I'll tell you what, Ray, they ran us seven times,
- 28:47nobody got hurt. But you can already start to hear
- 28:51little grumblings around the league about this Toushbush, I honestly
- 28:54believe I don't know if you believe this or not.
- 28:56I honestly believe this is the last year we're going
- 28:59to see the toush because I think when when the
- 29:02owners get together in the off season next year, I
- 29:04think you're going to have even more owners on the
- 29:06side of let's eliminate this play because basically what you said,
- 29:10it's a play you really cannot officiate accurately.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Right right, Well, I mean, you only survived by two
- 29:16votes this year, and I really thought, I really thought,
- 29:20based on what I was hearing from people that I
- 29:24know that are in the league, that are pretty high up,
- 29:26they're usually pretty plugged in before the owners meetings.
- 29:29Speaker 2: He said, it's gonna get it's gonna get overturned.
- 29:34Speaker 3: They you know, the Packers, the Packers, who are the
- 29:36ones that have been really out front on this, And
- 29:39they said, the Packers, the green Bay has been twisting
- 29:41a lot of arms, calling in a lot of favors,
- 29:44and they finally have their votes because remember they didn't
- 29:47take the vote at the owner's meeting, the owners meeting,
- 29:50they they called a special meeting like a month later.
- 29:52So what that really was was Green Bay Mark Murphy,
- 29:56the guy that runs the Packers, he was talking to
- 30:00everybody at the owner's meetings and he realized, I don't
- 30:04have the votes right now, but give me another month
- 30:08to actually start twisting people's arms, and if we meet
- 30:11in a month, I can have it done by that.
- 30:13And people were telling me that he's going to pull
- 30:15that off, that when they meet again and they have
- 30:17the vote, it's going to get overturned.
- 30:19Speaker 2: And it didn't.
- 30:20Speaker 3: It's survived by two votes. But I agree with you,
- 30:24especially if the Eagles win it again. Especially if the
- 30:27Eagles win again and we see the tush pushes once
- 30:30again a very big weapon in their arsenal.
- 30:35Speaker 2: I would guarantee you that it's going to come out.
- 30:38It makes out anyway.
- 30:39Speaker 3: But if the Eagles go back to back in the
- 30:41Super Bowl, almost certainly will and I think the argument
- 30:45this time, I think the argument will be based on
- 30:47the officiating that it's too hard, it's too hard to
- 30:50play to call and for that reason it's unfair.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Well, the Eagles offense scored twenty points, but this defense
- 30:58really shined. They called Vic Fangio called not one, not two,
- 31:03not three, but eleven blitzes in this game. I'll remember
- 31:07Vince called more than four or five in any particular game.
- 31:10That is a lot of faith that he put in
- 31:14the youngest starting defense in the National Football League.
- 31:18Speaker 3: Oh yeah, oh yeah, And that was I mean it's
- 31:21a huge difference from the game he called against this
- 31:24same team February, because they when they played in the
- 31:27Super Bowl, I mean the ultimate all stakes game. Vic
- 31:31got tremendous pressure on Mahomes. I had him running the
- 31:35whole night and never blitzed once.
- 31:37Speaker 2: I mean he front yep.
- 31:39Speaker 3: I mean he went with forman pressure every play and
- 31:42still got still got.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Great pressure in this game. He blitzed more a lot.
- 31:47Speaker 3: More yea, and got the win and got a significant
- 31:51amount of pressure. I mean that they didn't sack Mahomes
- 31:54a ton, but they were making them run a lot.
- 31:56And I think that that sort of tells you a
- 32:00little bit about that that's if he felt the need
- 32:04to blitz more in this game, it means that maybe
- 32:07he doesn't have he's not getting the pressure that he
- 32:09was getting before. And I mean, that's kind of what
- 32:12I took away from it, because that he took an
- 32:15approach in that game, especially in the second half, that
- 32:17was very different the way you need a Super Bowl.
- 32:19He just took an evaluation said you know what, now
- 32:21we're going to start blitzing. You know, we're not going
- 32:23to We're not getting the pressure I really want. We're
- 32:25gonna have to start sending some people. And that you
- 32:28can look at that a couple different ways. It's vic
- 32:30doing what he needs to do to win, which he
- 32:32does pretty much throughout his career. But the other part
- 32:35of it is he didn't have to do that last
- 32:36year doing it now, so you know that's where you know,
- 32:41that's why you as Zadarius Smith is here. You know,
- 32:44I think that they felt like they needed to get
- 32:47more pressure from the edge and listen for a guy
- 32:50that got here two days ago. I mean Smith, I
- 32:54mean played really well. He didn't play a ton of snaps,
- 32:57but when he was out there, you knew he was
- 32:58out there.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Yeah, you know.
- 33:00Speaker 1: He had four tackles half sack tackle for a loss.
- 33:05Not bad for a thirty three year old who was
- 33:07sitting in hel waiting for somebody to give him a call.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Who does.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Once again for Howie for identifying we needed help on
- 33:12that particular side of the field and going out and
- 33:15getting a guy probably got him at a bargain basement
- 33:17price at this particular stage of the season. But man,
- 33:21he hits the ground running and he made his presidence
- 33:24felt right away.
- 33:25Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean that's hand. It's Howie, you know.
- 33:29Speaker 3: I mean he's he's sitting there, he's got the you know,
- 33:31super Bowl champs and they won it. He's executive of
- 33:35the Year. And the guy is not resting on his laurels.
- 33:39Speaker 2: No, I mean he is.
- 33:40Speaker 3: I mean every day, I mean he is looking at
- 33:43that roster and he's looking at that team, and he's
- 33:45looking at the personnel chart up on the wall and
- 33:48trying to decide, Okay, how can we improve this team?
- 33:51Now you know, well, who's up there on that board
- 33:54that I can bring in that can make us better?
- 33:56Like right now, I mean Basb you know, I mean
- 33:59here he bring him in. That's I'll tell you.
- 34:03Speaker 2: That's why.
- 34:03Speaker 3: How he has really he has really grown into this
- 34:06job of person of general manager slash personnel chief. Uh.
- 34:10He every and everybody in the lague talks about it
- 34:13is you know how he never It's like he never sleeps,
- 34:15you know, even though he's even though they're defending champs,
- 34:18there's not he never takes a day off. He's always
- 34:21looking for ways to improve this team and bringing Smith in.
- 34:24You saw it in just one game. He's already made
- 34:26his presence felt, you know.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Yeah, you look at Jalen Carter, he gets fine, didn't
- 34:31get suspended, thankfully, the Eagles up hit him at his disposal.
- 34:35How much of a difference did he make in the
- 34:37trench warfare against the Chief Sunday?
- 34:39Speaker 2: A lot? Yeah, a lot? I mean you you saw
- 34:42that that he got what three or four quarterback hits?
- 34:47Speaker 3: Uh? I mean he and you see on every play now,
- 34:50I mean he's getting double teamed, uh so, and he's
- 34:54still getting pressure.
- 34:54Speaker 2: But even when he doesn't. When he doesn't get the pressure,
- 34:56he's creating opportunities for the other guys. I mean he
- 34:59is right now.
- 35:04Speaker 3: I don't think I don't think I'm overstating this by
- 35:06saying I think he's the most disruptive defensive player in
- 35:09the league right now.
- 35:10Speaker 1: I can't disagree.
- 35:12Speaker 2: I really think he is.
- 35:12Speaker 3: I mean, certainly at that position. I mean you can
- 35:15argue maybe somebody on the edge. I can't think of
- 35:17him right off hand, but maybe somebody outside.
- 35:20Speaker 2: But in terms of.
- 35:21Speaker 3: Lining up in the middle, I can't think of another
- 35:24player in the league that causes as much havoc as
- 35:26this guy does.
- 35:27Speaker 2: And he was and he was playing his butt off
- 35:30in this game. And you know what Jordan Davis is too. Yes,
- 35:33I think Dan Davis.
- 35:35Speaker 3: We all know he'd lost thirty pounds and really worked
- 35:37to get himself in shape. But it's making a difference.
- 35:41I mean, he played because Carter got kicked out of
- 35:44the Dallas game. Jordan Davis had to play a ton
- 35:46of snaps against the Cowboys, and he played really good.
- 35:51And he came back in this game and had another
- 35:53really good game. I think I think he's growing up
- 35:55and really beginning to grasp the idea of what it
- 35:58means to be a pro you know.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what it is.
- 36:03Speaker 3: I mean, college football is one thing, but the professional
- 36:07football is another thing.
- 36:08Speaker 2: I Mean, it's a job up here, and you've got
- 36:10to be ready to go all the time. And some
- 36:13guys get that right away, and some guys have to
- 36:15grow into it.
- 36:16Speaker 3: And I think Jordan has now kind of grown into
- 36:19it where he sort of carries himself and plays like
- 36:22a professional, you know. And we always knew he had
- 36:24the ability, and he certainly had the size and the power,
- 36:27but I think you're seeing him take another step this year.
- 36:30Speaker 2: And in the last two games, he's played a lot
- 36:33that needed him to play a lot, and I thought
- 36:35he's played really well.
- 36:37Speaker 1: I'm glad you mentioned Jordan Davis to me. Davis and
- 36:40Carter in this game showed what I call true grit,
- 36:45which is an old John Wayne movie. Davis in and
- 36:49out of there with cramping. It obviously had to do
- 36:54with the heat and humidity was ninety degrees plus in
- 36:57Kansas City. And how many times in the second half
- 36:59of particular do we see Jalen Carter holding his wrist
- 37:02and they both fought through that stuff to help this
- 37:06team get that all important w young players. But those
- 37:09are the type of things that you see in emerging
- 37:12young leaders.
- 37:14Speaker 2: I agree, I sort of saw the same thing. And
- 37:19you know, those are those are tough conditions yesterday. I mean,
- 37:21playing in that heat out there not easy.
- 37:25Speaker 3: And listen, you're gonna be You're gonna be doing going
- 37:27through the same thing in two weeks down in Tampa.
- 37:29Speaker 2: I mean, you know what it's going to be like
- 37:31in Tampa in two weeks. I mean that's going to
- 37:33be like a steam bath. Uh.
- 37:35Speaker 3: And we've seen Eagles teams, a lot of Eagles teams
- 37:38early season games down in Tampa just will okay. And
- 37:43I mean that's something you have to prepare for. I mean,
- 37:45you got to prepare for the Bucks. You got to
- 37:47prepare for Baker Mayfield. You got to prepare for that.
- 37:49You also got to prepare for the conditions. You got
- 37:51to prepare for the heat and the humidity. And they're
- 37:52gonna face that in two weeks. They got to get
- 37:54past the Rams this week and then you can't you're
- 37:57gonna be able to catch your breath because you're gonna
- 37:59have to go down to play the Bucks a week
- 38:01after that, and that's gonna be tough. And then the
- 38:02week after that you gotta play the Broncos. I mean,
- 38:04there's gonna be no there's gonna be no breathers in
- 38:07here for this team. But they've shown us through two
- 38:10weeks at least that they can still come out ahead.
- 38:13And that's you know, if you're going to defend your championship.
- 38:16I know they don't like to use that term defend
- 38:17the championship, but if you're gonna defend the championship or
- 38:20get back to the big game to play for the championship,
- 38:23these are the games that you have to win.
- 38:25Speaker 1: You know. Fourth quarter, Kansas City's on the move. I
- 38:28honestly thought they were about to go in and take
- 38:30the go ahead score. Then Lloyd behold, they're the six
- 38:33yard line. Mahomes goes to his favorite Kelsey baul Ricarscheve's
- 38:37off his hands right into Andre Macoba's hand. There he
- 38:40goes down the field, sets the Eagles up for a
- 38:43test down and puts them up by ten. That's the
- 38:44defining moment of the game. You know, Ray, it was
- 38:47the only turnover in the game, but boy did that
- 38:49come at the most opportune time for this Philadelphia Eagles
- 38:52team when they could have been on their heels if
- 38:54Kansas City had punched it in for a testdown.
- 38:57Speaker 3: They were under heels. Yeah, under heels at that moment
- 39:00because the Chiefs had finally found a rhythm to their
- 39:02offense and and they I think it was like thirteen
- 39:06play drive and they have it down inside. They're inside
- 39:09the ten, and they're in a position where they could
- 39:12take the lead, and it would have been that would
- 39:16have been tough.
- 39:16Speaker 2: And it was.
- 39:18Speaker 3: When you watch that play, that is a play that
- 39:21is a Mahomes and Kelsey have completed that pass a
- 39:26thousand times.
- 39:27Speaker 2: I mean, that's one of their favorite little hook plays
- 39:30in the middle.
- 39:31Speaker 3: And this particular time, Mahomes was a little bit hurried
- 39:35through it, maybe a little too soon. You know, Kelsey
- 39:39had not completely turned around to find it. He only
- 39:42gets instead of catching it, he only gets one hand
- 39:44on it pops up in the air and mccomba, who
- 39:48you know, hit The scouting book on him coming out
- 39:50of Texas was that this kid is always around the football.
- 39:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that was what they said.
- 39:57Speaker 3: It's very funny because when he was at Clemson that
- 40:00that really wasn't true. I mean, partly was the way
- 40:02they played him there when he became when he went
- 40:04to Texas last year, he became much more of a
- 40:08free safety kind of play the ball sort of guy,
- 40:11and he demonstrated a real instinct for being around the ball.
- 40:14Speaker 2: He had five picks last year at Texas, and that.
- 40:17Speaker 3: Was that was why the Eagles liked him. That was
- 40:19why the Eagles drafted him. And you saw that he
- 40:22didn't play a ton in the preseason. But the first
- 40:24game that he played in the preseason is one of
- 40:26his first plays is a pick six. And then later
- 40:29there's a play where he strips him and gets a
- 40:31fumble and recovers it. And then in this game and
- 40:34a really critical moment, I mean, he comes up with
- 40:37an interception and a return that I mean, there's a
- 40:41fourteen point swing right there.
- 40:42Speaker 2: That's that's seven points that they don't get.
- 40:45Speaker 3: And that's seven that you do talk about a fourteen
- 40:48point swing in a three point game, you know, that's
- 40:50if you want to identify the one big play of
- 40:52the game.
- 40:53Speaker 2: That's it. And this kid made it. You know, the
- 40:55only thing I really.
- 40:57Speaker 3: Liked him as a college player, I really did because
- 40:59of this instinct thing we're talking about. The only thing
- 41:02I was concerned about, and frankly, I'm still a little
- 41:04concerned about, is his size. I just when you see him,
- 41:09he's he's a very slim almost almost looks slender. Yeah,
- 41:13And I just wonder, and he's already had a couple
- 41:16of injury things. I just wonder if if he can
- 41:19hold up over a whole season. But I really do
- 41:23think in terms of the ability and the ability to
- 41:26make big plays for a team that's looking for that
- 41:29other safety, you know, I think he could be that
- 41:31guy if he could, if he could stay on the field,
- 41:33I think he could be I think he could be
- 41:35a really key player for this team, even as a rookie.
- 41:38Speaker 1: Well, Nick Sirianni looked at this team and said after
- 41:41the game, this is a resilient team. As we move
- 41:45forward and you look at this schedule, is that going
- 41:48to be the battle cry all of this season that
- 41:50they're gonna have to be resilient to to win more
- 41:52games than they lose. I don't think they're gonna blow
- 41:55out a lot of their opponents that they're going to
- 41:57face this season, and I think it's going to be
- 41:59the fine by big plays and big turnovers. Resilient is
- 42:04that word we're gonna be talking about throughout the course
- 42:06of this season.
- 42:06Speaker 4: Hey, fall is planting season. Did you know that many
- 42:09plants and trees actually do better when planted this time

- 43:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's I think of the seventeen games, Yeah,
- 43:42you know, you might. You might have a couple of
- 43:44games that are a little fluky and that they win big.
- 43:47You know, the other team makes a bunch of mistakes
- 43:49and the Eagles win it easy. But I don't think many.
- 43:52I mean, I i'd be one the bet ship. You know,
- 43:55fourteen of the games are going to be just like this.
- 43:57In the fourth quarter, it'll be You'll it'll be one
- 43:59score game. That's listen. That's just pretty much the way
- 44:03the NFL plays out these days. I mean, most of
- 44:05the games tend to play like that, especially when you're
- 44:08the champ and everybody's going for you. But the key
- 44:11to the whole thing and resilience. What Nick said, resilience
- 44:15is part of it. You have to you have to
- 44:17have that, But the other part of it is just.
- 44:20Speaker 2: Don't make mistakes. Just don't turn the ball over.
- 44:24Speaker 3: And that's you know, the Eagles haven't done a whole
- 44:27lot offensively. They certainly haven't been spectacular, but the one
- 44:30thing you would say is they just haven't made any mistakes.
- 44:32The quarterback hasn't thrown a touchdown pass, okay, but he
- 44:35also hadn't turned the ball over.
- 44:38Speaker 2: And so just be clean, be smart, be efficient. And
- 44:43I think that's the way this team is built.
- 44:44Speaker 3: And with the talent they have, the players they have, frankly,
- 44:48the system they have, they're going to hit their stride.
- 44:50Speaker 2: You're going to see that. I mean this time last
- 44:52year they were on their way to two and two,
- 44:54and everybody wanted to coach fire. You know, I think
- 44:57we're past that point now. But I think that you
- 45:00saw that last year.
- 45:01Speaker 3: This team started really slow before they've sort of found
- 45:04their way or found their identity. I think we're in
- 45:07that phase now where they're trying to figure out kind
- 45:08of what they are, but I have a feeling that
- 45:11it's going to get there. But in the process, you're
- 45:13gonna have to win some of these games, and you know,
- 45:15the one two of them and the next two are
- 45:18going to be equally challenging. The Rams are going to
- 45:21be tough this week, and we always know the Bucks
- 45:23are tough down there. So yes, got two wins, but
- 45:26the next two games are going to be a test.
- 45:28Speaker 1: Right right after that, well it wasn't pretty, but it
- 45:31was resilient and more importantly, they're sitting at the top
- 45:35of the NFC East at two and oh and up next,
- 45:38as we've talked about, the La Rams are coming to
- 45:41Philadelphia and we'll be right back here next week to
- 45:44talk about that match up. So until then, for Ray Dindrum,
- 45:47Derek Gunn, thanks for hanging out with us here on
- 45:49Birds Weekly Solong. Everybody h
