Latest / Brainwaves / The Ultimate 4K Rewatch: What Works? What Doesn't?

- 0:08Welcome to an episode of Two Shot Tuesday.
- 0:10You don't want to miss. You certainly don't want to be
- 0:12there telling your friends you missed it because this one is a
- 0:15huge one, As are all of them. My name is Jason Riley with me,
- 0:19a man who if you had bumped into someone, a stranger on the
- 0:22street and they overreacted and wanted to get into a fist fight
- 0:26with you, you would want this man here to help de escalate the
- 0:29situation. Barry T Nixon.
- 0:31Thank you very much. That's what I'm known for is
- 0:33taking the air out of a situation.
- 0:35You slate it, bring it back to zero.
- 0:38It's perfect. What might you say if we kind of
- 0:41bumped on the street and somebody turned around?
- 0:43I was like, you got a problem. It wasn't you that bumped, it
- 0:47was me or somebody else. And you would immediately leap
- 0:49in and you would jump in and you would say.
- 0:52I would just say hey sorry man my bad like so many people do
- 0:56and move on because you know what?
- 0:57A street fight is the last thing a middle-aged man needs to
- 1:00involve himself with. I think he'd say that and they
- 1:02would say they would agree with you in that moment.
- 1:04They would be like, you know what, I need to make some
- 1:07different life choices. I think so.
- 1:09Because you're convincing. I'm not into that kind of thing,
- 1:12Jay. You know, maybe look a certain
- 1:15way and people maybe assume that, but I'm just, that's the
- 1:19last thing that I would want to do is get involved in some kind
- 1:22of a street altercation. I get it rocket scientist from
- 1:26you when I see you, especially in the tank like you got going
- 1:28on today, rocket scientist. Oh dude.
- 1:31Huge rocket scientist. By the way, yeah.
- 1:34And Artemis 2. We were going to talk about that
- 1:36later, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
- 1:38Yeah, yeah. Where do?
- 1:39We have on. This baby format.
- 1:41Yes, we do. For now, we certainly do because
- 1:43big things are coming, but we can't say anything more about
- 1:46it. But until they do, Jay, because
- 1:48it's a clean day for me and you know what that means?
- 1:50I'm hitting the iron immediately following this record.
- 1:53My shot today will be some pre workout and I took my trainer's
- 1:56advice and made it more like an espresso, you know what I mean?
- 2:01Way less water and a lot more powder.
- 2:03And I tell you something, your earlobes start to tingle when
- 2:07this stuff starts taking effect. It's actually kind of cool.
- 2:09So that's what I'm having. What about yourself?
- 2:11Well, I am in support of you. I am going with water with some
- 2:15orange kool-aid squeezy in it. Plenty of water in this class.
- 2:20Yeah, I see that. Yeah.
- 2:21Cheers, Jay. Cheers.
- 2:25See, that's one question. Gun to my head.
- 2:28If they were going to say, what is Jason going to drink tonight
- 2:31and it was a clean day, I I would have guessed some kind of
- 2:34squeezy because that seems to be your default.
- 2:36I was like I I might get the flavor wrong, but I would know
- 2:39it's got to be some kind of squeezy because that's what you
- 2:42do You deliver. If I don't gun to my head, I'll
- 2:44be all right. Yeah, if I don't squeeze
- 2:45something into my water, I'm not as happy about it.
- 2:48I'll drink it and I'll enjoy it as much as I can.
- 2:51You know, plain water. But water with a squeeze of just
- 2:55about anything is a real delight.
- 2:57Barry. Speaking of real delights.
- 2:58Yes. Let's talk about the just the
- 3:02influx of packages that have come to to The Newsroom this
- 3:07past week. You've had to consume your fair
- 3:09share of 4K bit content, and if you could just share some
- 3:15highlights with our listener. Will viewers?
- 3:17Yeah. It was basically like a month
- 3:19worth of four KS that just happened to arrive all at the
- 3:23same time. I watched Hard Boiled.
- 3:27It's a Hong Kong action film starring Chow, Young, Fat and
- 3:30directed by John Woo. Yeah, I think it's the very
- 3:34early 80s or like, maybe the lady, maybe even late 70s.
- 3:37Like, it's certainly older. Chow looks like he's about 17
- 3:41years old. OK Yeah.
- 3:43Anyway, that was fun. I enjoyed the killer more.
- 3:46Now, they're not a direct sequel, they're not really
- 3:47related, but they're under that same umbrella of Hong Kong
- 3:50action John Woo and Chow Young Fat teaming up to work together.
- 3:54Yeah, it looked, it looked better than the Killer.
- 3:57I will say Hard Boiled, the restoration is like truly
- 3:59stunning. It looks like it was shot
- 4:01yesterday. Sound is great.
- 4:02I'd prefer to watch it with the English dub.
- 4:05Yeah, I think a lot of people would disagree, as, you know,
- 4:09that being the preferred way to watch a Hong Kong actioner.
- 4:11But if you're not in the mood to read, you just want to enjoy the
- 4:14gunplay, and there's plenty of it.
- 4:16Yeah, I just want to sit there and enjoy the gunplay.
- 4:19You know, it doesn't matter if Chow has an Australian accent of
- 4:23a white guy, you know what I mean?
- 4:25It's it was a bit of an odd choice why they decided to, you
- 4:28know, that is, of him. It was a little odd.
- 4:31Only him with the Australian accent or was it Australian dub?
- 4:34It wasn't a full, no, it was mostly him.
- 4:36Everyone else sort of sounded like they were maybe from the
- 4:39region, but they weren't. They didn't have that sort of
- 4:42Sydney swagger like that. He did.
- 4:44It was, it's worth it just for that.
- 4:46Actually, it's kind. Of funny mates.
- 4:48Did he say mate at all or like any did Australian other shrimp
- 4:51on the Bobbie and like no totally.
- 4:53Wasn't like that. That OK, OK, so you could
- 4:56definitely tell to the dub, yeah.
- 4:57Yeah, exactly right. So that was an interesting
- 5:00choice. Pretty good movie.
- 5:01I say 3 out of five, 3 1/2 out of five.
- 5:04It did take me a couple of viewings, though, Jay, I had to
- 5:07do what you normally do, which is get up and stretch my legs.
- 5:11And now I live in a much smaller place than you.
- 5:12So that didn't take very long at all.
- 5:14And the next thing I'm like, that was only three minutes.
- 5:16I need more. I need more time, but eventually
- 5:19finished it. But if I'm comparing it to the
- 5:21killer, which I know that's not the point of this, but I can't
- 5:23help but I would give the the edge to the killer.
- 5:26And the killer has a fantastic ending.
- 5:29This one is just, you know, OK. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:32And I could see how you would do walks around because those
- 5:35movies can be very repetitive. Like the they, they tend to go
- 5:39over the same kind of lot of, you know, the kicking and the
- 5:42this and the that. Like there's, they get into a
- 5:43lot of fights. That's the whole point of them.
- 5:46They're cool fights, but I could see needing a bit more of a
- 5:48break than they give you with some of the dialogue.
- 5:50Yeah. And but one thing is like the
- 5:52Hong Kong actioners are not like they're not Kung Fu movies.
- 5:55There is fighting, but it's mostly guns and shooting.
- 5:58That's that's the hook of these movies.
- 6:00It's mostly the gunplay. There is some like hand to hand,
- 6:03but not nearly as much as say, a Jackie Chan film, which is
- 6:06pretty much all that. OK, now, now you were so excited
- 6:10about red Sonya and so like, I can't even begin.
- 6:14I've I'm imagining you're going to just keep nothing but pure
- 6:17gold back on me. I would just.
- 6:19Say the love of it. So red Sonya.
- 6:21Let's do a quick review of that. It's like it it, It definitely
- 6:26earned its two out of five on blu-ray.com for the review.
- 6:31It looks fantastic. Let's just get that out of the
- 6:34way. But the rest of it, it is one of
- 6:36the toughest slogs. I I thought people were
- 6:38exaggerating. It can't be that bad.
- 6:40It's got Arnold in it, but Arnold is very underused, even
- 6:44though it's his name right under Red Sonia.
- 6:46And then it says after introducing Brigitte Nielsen, it
- 6:49says her first screen appearance.
- 6:51But Arnold is underused. And the fact that he's not
- 6:54playing Conan, he's playing some other guy.
- 6:56Also, because I think it was a rights issue.
- 6:58They didn't have the rights to use the Conan character.
- 7:01So he's basically Conan, but his name is now, like, you know,
- 7:04Doug Smith or something stupid. It was like, what's going on
- 7:07here? It's supposed to be Conan.
- 7:09Yeah. The acting is atrocious.
- 7:10The story is just nonsensical. And it doesn't, like, some of
- 7:14the scenes are so painful to watch.
- 7:16Like, it's excruciating. However, it looked great.
- 7:19I keep coming back to that. That's the only saving grace for
- 7:22this. You have to like every part
- 7:23particle of sand, every boulder I'm sure Styrofoam every.
- 7:27Particle of fact, you can tell there's a scene where they're
- 7:30fighting this, like, metal dragon monster in a very obvious
- 7:35set that was like, half filled with water.
- 7:37And Arnold's like, the only way to kill this thing is we got to
- 7:40get its eyes. You got to pry its eyes out.
- 7:42So they pry the eyes out and it starts thrashing around and
- 7:45that's the end. And then they're able to climb
- 7:47to safety. But every time that Arnold was
- 7:50like wrestling with this thing, you could just hear, like, the,
- 7:52like, the sound of metal just being clunked around.
- 7:55It just sounded like somebody was throwing cans around a room.
- 7:58And it was just like, what is happening here?
- 8:01Yeah. So anyway, there are, of course,
- 8:03as you know, a lot of 80s movies, it does feature some
- 8:07boobs. So that was nice, but again, too
- 8:10few boobs to save this movie, Jay, I'm afraid.
- 8:13Too few. OK.
- 8:15And this came out after the second Conan the Destroyer I
- 8:18believe, right? I'm not sure exactly where it's
- 8:21where it nestles between those movies, but I'll tell you.
- 8:23They should have just stopped. This should have been just
- 8:26killed in utero. I'm sorry.
- 8:28It just, it didn't need to be made.
- 8:30It was just it's so painful. You this would take you the rest
- 8:34of this year to get through, I think.
- 8:36So I think you could do it in two-minute increments.
- 8:39That's like, Oh my God, yeah. It's pain.
- 8:41We. Tried, we tried watching it
- 8:42years ago and it was on a streaming service or something.
- 8:45We didn't even make it through. We just abandoned it.
- 8:48It's really not that good. And it and I just because the
- 8:50other, you know, the female version Supergirl was also a
- 8:54movie of that ilk where it was just not right good like you
- 8:58want to enjoy it. And it's just not it's an
- 9:01extension of a franchise. It's it just does not hold up.
- 9:03So yeah, too bad for Red Sonia. I think you're right about the
- 9:06rights issue thinks even in the comics, I think Robert E Howard
- 9:09is the name of the creator of both Conan and Red Sonia.
- 9:12But somewhere the rights split off.
- 9:13They used to appear in Marvel Comics together, and now they're
- 9:17owned by different companies and yeah, it's a whole thing.
- 9:19Yeah, OK, well there you go. Shall we get to shot #2?
- 9:22Was there any more 4K or do you want to do?
- 9:23Yeah, there's two more we can show.
- 9:25Let's let me settle two more. Should we do a shot to get us
- 9:28through? I think we might need to.
- 9:29I think we need to after the Red Sonia review.
- 9:31By the way, I'm still keeping it.
- 9:33It looks great on my shelf. I showed you the artwork.
- 9:35It's got all this non disc swag that Arrow was known for.
- 9:38It's got the booklet that I can't read without glasses.
- 9:41It's got the fold out poster. It's even got stickers.
- 9:43Jay, you. I like that.
- 9:44It'll look nice, It's nestled right below the Conan Chronicles
- 9:48on my shelf, and it'll never, ever see the light of day again.
- 9:51What I've learned is it's got to be really terrible to come over
- 9:54to my house permanently. It's not near Crow or Godzilla,
- 9:59Shin Godzilla or. What was the other one?
- 10:02The first one? Battlestar.
- 10:03Galactica, Galactica, Yes, Thank you.
- 10:05Appreciate all those happy home taking up space on the shelf.
- 10:09And here's a squeezy in your honor, Sir.
- 10:10Thank you, Jay. OK.
- 10:16Yeah, carry on. This is huge.
- 10:18Next one. You don't want to watch an
- 10:20interesting movie? We've got the the pick for you.
- 10:24Oh boy, this one was pretty cool because it was a miniseries
- 10:28originally from 1979 and you and I talk texted a little bit about
- 10:32this and it's Toby Hooper's Salem's Lot, based on the
- 10:37Stephen King novel. I actually have nothing but good
- 10:40things to say about the miniseries other than I tried to
- 10:43watch it as one complete film. You actually have an option.
- 10:45You can watch Part 1, Part 2, or you can build sandwiches
- 10:48together into one like big old movie.
- 10:51I was feeling a little extra ambitious on that Friday.
- 10:53When we got to at least the midway point, I was like, OK,
- 10:56I'm out. It's just a little too much for
- 10:59one sitting because it's it's over 3 hours, right?
- 11:02So if you're watching it, I'd recommend do it the way it was
- 11:05aired, Part 1 and then Part 2 right a little bit later.
- 11:08But the acting is amazing, really good, good story.
- 11:11But it's like watching a novel because there is so much going
- 11:15on, like there's a lot of characters being introduced,
- 11:17there's a lot of back story. So it is much more a deliberate
- 11:22pace than say a hour and a half feature film.
- 11:26So you got to have the patience for which I like I said, I
- 11:29thought I would have the patience for the full thing.
- 11:30I didn't. But I did get back to it and
- 11:33finish it up and it was pretty cool.
- 11:34The ending was a bit weird though.
- 11:36It's kind of, it doesn't, it's not as satisfying as I was
- 11:39hoping because it's a little bit open-ended.
- 11:40Spoilers. Right.
- 11:42Yeah, I did read the novel, and it's not a thick novel, so they
- 11:45gave it some room to breathe by making it a four hour miniseries
- 11:48type thing. Yeah, that's what it was, 4
- 11:51hours, Right. Two parts.
- 11:52Yeah, just over without commercials.
- 11:53Yeah, I guess. Yeah, that's right, over three.
- 11:54I don't remember the movie. It was the book.
- 11:56It was a long time ago, but I know the concept.
- 11:58But I'm not sure how it ended either.
- 12:00So, well, the star rating. I would say that's 3.5 out of
- 12:04five. I'd loan that too if you wanted
- 12:05to watch the miniseries. I know you're a fan of 70s
- 12:08television and it does have some of those hallmarks that you've
- 12:10talked about like the freeze frame at the end to indicate
- 12:13that we're going to commercial and we'll be and but some of it
- 12:17was pretty funny. It was just like a quick zoom
- 12:19and then the guys was just like frozen.
- 12:21Zoom in on the commercial too. They'll do that for some reason.
- 12:25Yeah, and it's inconsistent. It's not like it's not done at
- 12:28everyone. It's just done sometimes.
- 12:29That's how the $6 million man is famous for doing that.
- 12:32I don't know if it's famous, but they do it a lot.
- 12:34Okay, right, one more to go. What else have you got?
- 12:37Is the final 4K? This one was an absolute
- 12:40delight. This one is definitely the.
- 12:43Actually there is another one after this.
- 12:44If we have time, I'll be very, very quick.
- 12:46We're calling this the 4K episode.
- 12:48Then I think we have this is to line up your viewing and kind of
- 12:51from worst to best you seem to be doing it.
- 12:53So this is great. Yeah, well, these two are
- 12:55amazing, these next two, but I'm going to start with a classic
- 12:58comedy, Spaceballs. I hadn't seen it in ages.
- 13:01Holy shit. The rest the restoration looks
- 13:04incredible. The scene with Pizza the Hut now
- 13:07is actually more gross than ever before because you're seeing
- 13:10every dripping piece of sweaty pepperoni and cheese and just
- 13:15like it. It really looks like this guy,
- 13:17whoever is under there is literally covered in in pizza
- 13:20toppings. And then the when his helper,
- 13:22the silver guy, takes a bite out of him at the end, he says
- 13:24you're delicious and he takes a bite and now you see the sauce
- 13:28around his silver mouth. That's like, Oh my God, dude, I
- 13:31didn't need that. But it was, you know, some
- 13:33people will be pleased to see that level of detail.
- 13:36And I know you're a man who appreciates a good level of
- 13:38detail. So you'll definitely that movie
- 13:40holds up amazingly well. I laughed all the way through it
- 13:42and yeah, fantastic. Really, really great.
- 13:45That's easily, you know, like a 4.5 or A5 out of five in terms
- 13:50of like holds up but also endless repeatability.
- 13:53Makes you excited that Rick Moranis is coming back for
- 13:55Spaceballs too. Like you.
- 13:56Know and they've finished filming it.
- 13:58It's wrapped, it's in the can. It'll be out next year.
- 14:02Nice, awesome. OK, so that's a huge like 4.5 to
- 14:055. Now take us through your final
- 14:07entry into the 4K experience for our viewers and listeners to
- 14:11rent this weekend. And I think and by the way,
- 14:13these are all except for Hard Boiled, these are all Arrow film
- 14:16releases. And we know Arrow always does a
- 14:18great job. They do.
- 14:19The last one is the best one of the bunch and that is the Usual
- 14:22Suspects. That is absolutely one of the
- 14:25best movies of all time. You can watch it anytime.
- 14:28I've watched it, I don't know, countless times, probably over
- 14:3130 in my life, and yeah, it is. It just holds up so well.
- 14:35Those scenes are so well executed, the music, everything
- 14:37about it. And it looks absolutely stunning
- 14:41in 4K. It really does.
- 14:42They did a hell of a job. That's Bryan Singer, right He.
- 14:45Directs Bryan Singer. I remember seeing it the first
- 14:47time, just the the shock ending at the time.
- 14:50Oh my God. Really gets you.
- 14:52Yeah. Everyone's jaws on the ground.
- 14:54Yeah, when the camera is on Kevin Spacey's limp leg and it's
- 14:59limping, limping. And then all of a sudden it goes
- 15:01normal. And he continues.
- 15:02Like, holy shit, dude. Unbelievable.
- 15:06Only the time was done so well was in Forrest Gump when he
- 15:09breaks free of those shackles, I'm.
- 15:11Not sure if those two things are they're.
- 15:13Not the same. They don't line right up.
- 15:15Watch him back-to-back. I guarantee you, you're going to
- 15:17see echoes of the usual suspects in Forrest Gump.
- 15:20Echoes of it. Yeah, echoes.
- 15:23OK, I'm sure. Humans in both movies, Musical
- 15:25soundtrack in both movies, Locations in both movies.
- 15:30The need I go on? I'm pretty sure there's some
- 15:32Plaid pants in both movies. I'm sure there is.
- 15:35I wonder if the leg brace scene made it into Foreskin Gump,
- 15:39which is a different movie altogether.
- 15:41Different brace? I don't know.
- 15:43Different brace all together, but let's hope it breaks free in
- 15:46the same way. I think that'd be cool.
- 15:48That should be great. We should arrange a screening of
- 15:49that sometime. I can't.
- 15:51I can't think of a better way to end than really mention of the
- 15:55elusive foreskin. OK, take a.
- 15:57Second, OK, that's great. That's that's 4K corner
- 16:01everybody. Thanks for sitting through it
- 16:02all. Every one of the movies I
- 16:03mentioned is worth a look. I don't know if they're worth a
- 16:06buy. It's certainly not red Sonya.
- 16:08Please avoid that one unless you are just foolish like me and got
- 16:11caught up in nostalgia and we're, you know, happy to spend
- 16:1340 bucks. And the first one, what would
- 16:15you buy that? The Chow young, fat.
- 16:18Hard boiled. I did buy that and I am happy
- 16:20with my. Would you recommend to be it be
- 16:23purchased? I guess it depends if you've, I
- 16:26don't know, question. I'm not sure if I'd recommend
- 16:28unless you are really into Hong Kong action.
- 16:31But like I said, the killer that is 1 you should definitely own
- 16:35because it just has such a it's got a better story, better story
- 16:38and a much more satisfying ending and a nice little twist
- 16:41as well, which is kind of cool. OK, right.
- 16:44So that's what I would say. But the other ones, usual
- 16:46suspects, Spaceballs, you got to get those in your collection if
- 16:49you don't already have them. What are we doing here?
- 16:51You know what I mean, Jay? Exactly, I'm telling you.
- 16:54Exactly, Yeah. And Salem's Lot.
- 16:56Salem's Lot if you're a 70s miniseries fan like you, RJ.
- 17:01All right, well, thank you, Barry, for bringing the goods on
- 17:044K on another exclusive 4K corner episode.
- 17:07It's lots. Check it out.
- 17:09And we will see you back here next week when we've got all
- 17:12kinds of great things to talk about.
- 17:13You know, we do. We'll miss you for the next
- 17:15week. Have a great one.
- 17:16You too. Thank you for listening to Two
- 17:20Shot Tuesday. The show was produced by Barry
