[rock music] [laughs] Hey, everybody. This is Sven. This is Full Spectrum Cycling.
• 0:19
Uh, you can't tell- [laughs]... but we're starting, like, three minutes late tonight. I'm sorry about that. I, I, uh...
• 0:24
[laughs] If we hadn't have told you, you'd never have known though, so Tony's putting on lipstick and- It looks like a carrot... and we got JK over there with the, uh- It's all right...
• 0:33
fancy shirt on and- Matt Gates is looking at Tony next to me... he is. Putting on his lipstick. Cha- Lip balm, balm... carrot stick. That is- This stuff's killer. The- O'Keefe's... whatever.
• 0:44
Oh, my God Is it, uh, Bug Bees, Burt's Bees or- No, it's O'Keefe's. No, no, it's carrots... it's their own brand and it's really good. [laughs] Really is.
• 0:51
I went, I almost went dark and, like, uh- Allowed me to eat, uh, or to drink IPAs again because it, it would mess up- IPA, IPA, IPA... my lips really bad, and that really helped seal them, so- Oh, yeah... there you go.
• 1:02
Huh. IPA, IPA, IPA. Beer makes your lips chapped? Certain hops I'm allergic to. Oh. Let's find out. Top of the- Um, oh, yeah... top of the hill, apparently. What? Already? Well, look at that.
• 1:13
Well, we were talking about the- You don't wanna-- First of all, you don't wanna drink that one over there. Well, he gives this one to me. Oh, there you go. Thank you, JK. Okay. Wow.
• 1:20
Didn't I give- Well, I mean- Didn't I give you one? I thought you did, yeah. I got one over here. Oh, we... All right, so it's just me. Thank you, sir. I have one. I got one. All right.
• 1:27
Well- There's, there's another one right there. Yeah. [laughs] You want it? No, it's on deck. Okay. [laughs] So I- Boy, we got to the top- [laughs]... of the hill really fast today. Let's take a- Well, no- Yeah...
• 1:38
it was just- Let's get to the- It was seamless. It was seamless for a moment. Was it? Yes. And then you had the- So-... reverse engineer it, going, "Okay, why are we here now?" Well, let's- And [laughs]...
• 1:52
let's talk about that [laughs] top of the hill. JK brought beer- Yeah... Oskar Blues Cosmic Mutant Experimental IPA.
• 2:01
Uh, I walked i- I walked into the place and, you know, looking for something that we haven't had before- Mm-hmm... kinda thing. Mm-hmm. That's getting- Within w-... increasingly hard to do. Exactly. Mm-hmm.
• 2:10
But within, like... The w- Bless their fucking hearts, a lot of these breweries just go like, "Hey, here's our blah, blah, blah version." Fine. Perfect. I'll take it. So yeah. Holy mackerel. Um, wow. It's got a- Yeah.
• 2:24
It's- It's got a very forward-facing, some sort of, um- It's pretty... they said it's, uh- It's d- delicious... what am I tasting? It's fruity somewhat.
• 2:32
Yeah, it's m- It, it's probably some freaking hop of some kind that I don't know the name of, but- That's... Yeah. Well, that's the thing. It's like, I think- It, it's an experimental, so I don't- Yeah.
• 2:42
It's like, it's [laughs] it's like... [clears throat] What it sounds like to me, it's like, "Oh, hey, we, um... Yeah, let's just throw this all together." Just see what happens. A rail spill. Yeah, a rail spill.
• 2:58
Use your words. A rail spill draft. Use your words, Michael. Use your words, Michael. I am. I'm trying. [laughs] I, I understand where he's going there. Yep. It, it... Just the rail spill. Just going like, okay.
• 3:05
Or like a- Ooh, like, like the bar mat, emptying it out into the glass. Exactly. Ooh. So- Here's- That or, or in... for our younger listeners, you know when you, you just put
• 3:18
all the drinks that you can possibly get on the soda gun and you put them all in one, the bomb? Oh. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. That sounds really bad. Yeah. It was horrible, but you had to do it. Yeah. Or I did.
• 3:31
[laughs] So it is similar to- That may, that may explain a lot more than you think it is. I, I, I- Why, why [laughs] am I twitching in the corner? [laughs] I, I think it's similar to...
• 3:42
There's a- Oh, is there a name for it now? Now we have to label things. There's a butcher shop in Oshkosh- Bernie's... that at the end of the day they take all of the scraps and they put it into- The leavings...
• 3:55
a sausage and they call it, like, um- Floor sausage... basement floor or something [laughs] like that. [laughs] Oh, nice. Yeah. And it's different every time. It might have you... We, we get it once or twice.
• 4:06
They're always good, but they're always totally different. I mean, it's whatever- Is there anything crunchy in them from, like- No, I'm n-... sand on the floor or anything?
• 4:13
Yeah, no, they're, they've never been on the floor, so- Well, no, technically- That's a, you know... they haven't been on the floor... yeah, that's like a- Yeah... New Orleans. It's like, uh, debris.
• 4:20
It's like, ooh, you know. It's just... It's gonna be a lot of m- meat things. So- Mayb- maybe- Mo- yeah, yeah... maybe a beetle or two possibly... but well-spiced, so don't matter. I- [laughs] Don't, don't matter.
• 4:35
It's gonna be well-spiced and you, you don't have to think about it unless you think about it. And then if you're there... I have a UW- I'm French, so I'm just in a raspberry... bike-related story. I am. And go.
• 4:48
So I was at work today and, um, I had to go see a professor who was having an issue with a local printer. And I go over. He's in engineering and mathematical sciences. Thank God. I thought you were gonna talk about me.
• 5:02
Uh, no, no. [laughs] Oh, that was funny though. Come to think of it, that, yeah, that was about a printer too. Oh, my... Jesus Christ. [laughs] But no. Um, I wouldn't do that to you. Push, push the on button, please.
• 5:13
Uh- No, just- Uh... plug it in... plug it in the USB port.
• 5:19
[laughs] But anyway, so I, um, I'm troubleshooting this printer to this guy, for this gentleman, and I happen to look and see that he's got a River West 24 sticker on the back of his laptop.
• 5:30
And I'm like, "Oh, wait a second." I said- [laughs]... "We have, we have a problem here." I'm like, "What's this sticker right here?" And he's like, "I've done almost all the River West 24s."
• 5:40
And we get to talking and, yeah, his printer's dead, and to make the why I went to the ticket. Um, and then I, I looked at him. I'm like, "Wait a second." I'm like, "Were you forced to do pushups for two hours
• 5:56
from midnight to 2:00 AM on a corner?" He's like, "Yes, that was me." And I said, "And that was me." So this is the dude that I did pushups with- Oh, God. Yeah, yeah... during the RS 24, and he's a professor at UW.
• 6:09
Oh, you didn't, you had not known him previously? Um, I had only met him that night- Gotcha. Okay... and then got there today, and we finally put two and two together. Wow.
• 6:17
And the dude ends up being an absolutely incredible- Mathematical geniuses... woodworker. Uh, he had this... the coolest desk. I, I... Yeah, it, it was really a great visit. We had a great time.
• 6:27
I sent- And he imagined- I sent him to... Uh, he had a MobCraft sticker on his laptop, and I said, "You really need to go check out Amorphic," especially since I noticed his woodworking stuff.
• 6:37
And I'm like, "Then you need to go to w- " Urban Craftsman? Is that what- Yeah... Urban Craftsman? Urban Craftsman. I'm like, "You'll love it," and I sent him a link. So anyways, isn't that just crazy- It is...
• 6:46
that I would run into- Is that serendipity or some shippity? Man, is that whatever they- Some flippity? Flip flappity? I had, I had another experience where I walked into this person's room, and it was not you.
• 6:58
[laughs] And I, I walked in, and the woman looked at me, and she's like, "How's Mariposa?" I'm like, "Oh, my God, I know you from the dog park."
• 7:07
Just weird shit like that is happening to me all over campus right now, so- I think, isn't the dog park closed for a little bit- Yes. Oh, yeah... so some of my pits- Yeah... so they could grow some grass.
• 7:15
And actually they... Yeah, and they put a bigger, a bigger, uh, tarp on it going, "Park closed. [laughs] Dog park closed." [laughs] Yeah, dog people aren't really that smart.
• 7:28
I think a lot of times their dogs are smarter than the people- Well, no. I, I mean, just w-... because they'll just try and go in there anyway even though it's closed. No. Well, those people are idiots no matter what.
• 7:36
Right, and their dogs are smart. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. Yeah, I suppose. I, I suppose. I- Oh, wasn't talking about you. Sh- Sh- Sh- Sh- Sh- Shava.
• 7:43
I'm talking about- So wait, I, I also had something else to talk about that- When I had to, I had to ride my bike to pick up and walk Shava. See, I rode my bike. Shava.
• 7:52
Uh, which is a fucking German shepherd and will take your [growls] big, big girl. Nice. I like big shepherds and they can... Ah. [laughs] Are you, are you, are you going somewhere with this?
• 8:06
No, it was just a very- [laughs] So I noticed something, I, I noticed something on Lime scooters around campus. Are they the ones that keep pinging my only- That is part of the Uber family...
• 8:19
oh, by the way, after the show we have to talk real quickly about Bobcats because- [laughs]... my, mine at home still isn't, uh... It's showing up online, it's showing everything, and it's not doing anything.
• 8:28
[laughs] And I'm like, is it 'cause- Have they gone?... there's nothing going on? 'Cause the one here is going nuts. Oh, that's a little- The one at the shop is going crazy.
• 8:34
Yeah, let's look, 'cause I- Like in the last three days there's been like 80 different things it's hit. It... All right. It's going crazy. Yeah, let's look. So I don't know. It's weird.
• 8:41
But no, these Lime scooters I noticed two things. They have, now have removable batteries, so whoever goes to collect them to charge them doesn't have to take the whole scooter.
• 8:54
I still saw a guy with a truckload full of them the other day in the back of his truck. Well, I'm sure there's- And he has an app on his phone, and he's looking at the thing- Th- this-... and he throws it in his truck...
• 9:02
this appears to be a completely removable, and there's even a, a beacon for an RFID. Oh. And the other thing I noticed is they have front suspension now. Yeah, I... So do the Spins.
• 9:12
They've got a little, about a inch and a half of- Little [laughs] shock... little shock absorber up there... yeah, it's pretty weird. I'm like, "Whoa." Hey, you're gonna need that in Milwaukee with your pot holes.
• 9:19
Y'all mother- y'all motherfuckers need Jesus is what Zani says. God. I did that. I will tell you exactly how far I went on one of those fucking scooters from Curtin Hall on Downer
• 9:37
to the front of where the book sh- store was on the, like- Oh, yeah. Like, like, like- Like a, a third of a block... I was gonna say, like, yeah, like, like- A quarter of a block, and it just was like-... 45 feet...
• 9:50
no, no, no and fucking no. Uh-uh. [laughs] No scooters for Michael- Yep... is what I'm saying. Just saying. I'm getting out of this deal. All right. Yeah, so- Hey, speaking of computers, here's something interesting. Oh.
• 10:06
Oh. Yeah. Yeah. Guess who, guess who died l- this recently? I don't know. Gordon, Gordon Moore, he of Moore's law. Oh, wow. I didn't know he was still alive. Which I don't even... Does that...
• 10:17
Is, is it still valid that processor power is doubling every how? What is it? It was every year or two year? I don't know, something, but yeah. So yeah, RIP Gordon Moore. Thank you very much. I bet you it's not.
• 10:29
Well, probably not anymore. Right. That was in the, the early days. Yeah. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. Where's my thing? What? Where's my bu- I, I, what the- What? What? Hit the button.
• 10:37
I know, but I'm trying to find- Hello... I'm shaking my finger real quickly to make my cursor very large so I can find it. Now I- [laughs] Now I pushed- [laughs]
• 10:47
That sounded exactly how you wanted it to sound, didn't it? Didn't it, though? [laughs] Hey, welcome to the radio program, caller. Who do we have on the line? Hey, Derek Mauser here, Mitchell County Mountain Goats.
• 10:58
Derek. Hey. Derek, hey, Derek. How's it going? Mitchell County Mountain Goats, that would be the, uh, the club? The club, yes. Mayday Mayhem is coming up soon. Yeah, that's, uh- Ooh... well, you jumped right into it.
• 11:13
That's exactly why we wanted to talk to you. Uh, your buddy Joe- Awesome... your buddy Joe, uh, wh- about a week or two ago sent me a, a flyer for this, uh, Mayday Mayhem Clunker race you guys are doing.
• 11:26
Uh, I assume Osage is in Mitchell County. Is that correct? That's correct. This is it. This is in Iowa, uh, approximately an hour west of Decorah, and how far east of Mason City?
• 11:38
It's, like, sort of in between the two, isn't it? Well, we're about a half an hour from Mason City. Okay. All right. Yep.
• 11:45
I, I looked at it on a map and I said, "Hey, Chewy, can we stay in Decorah on Friday night and go over there and do that event on, uh, Saturday at 2:00 PM?" And he said, "That sounds like a really good idea."
• 11:56
So I just wanted to- [laughs] Yeah. Yeah. It is, it is a good idea. So I just wanted to, uh- Yeah, it's a great idea... so I, I, I asked Joe to come on the show and he's like, "Oh, no, that's not me, man.
• 12:07
You probably should talk to Derek." So I'm like, "Hey, Derek, do you wanna be on the show?" And he's like, "Yeah." Okay. So, um, give, give- And here we are...
• 12:13
and then, and that brings us to this exact moment in time right now. So- When the timeline skewed, Marty. You got it. I tell you. Ah. So, uh, gi- give us a little heads up on- I've got my, I've got my beer port.
• 12:24
Oh, do you? Yours. We are... Yeah, we, we hit the hill early at, like, seven, 7:04 today, but what do you, what do you got going?
• 12:31
So I'm representing our local brewery, Limestone Brewers, and I'm drinking a Maybach- Nice... uh, Mayhem. We've got some beers here that are named after our trails and events. Nice.
• 12:42
And I'm drinking a Maybach Mayhem right now. Right on. Uh, is it, uh, is it a, is it actually a Maibock or is it something else? What, what style beer? It is. Yeah, right on. It's, it's actually a Maibock, yeah.
• 12:57
[laughs] He's like, "It's not trying to be too clever." Well, I think Maibock makes... No, no, Maibock makes more sense if, if the, if the event is gonna be in... Is it in May?
• 13:03
Then it's two- Well, I think, I, I like to say Maybock because it relates to mayhem. Right. I, I may want one when we get to Iowa. [laughs] Uh, give us a- So he can leave...
• 13:11
little rundown on the event so that people, if they wanted to go to f- you know, North Central Iowa for a kick-ass clunker get-together, what, what can people expect? I- it's not the first year you've done it, right?
• 13:24
So this is the third a- annual May Day Mayhem. The event was inspired by, um, you know, I saw that Clunkers documentary.
• 13:34
You know Fisher, Kelly and Breeze, how they were in San Francisco flying down these hills- Mm-hmm... and repacking at the bottom, and it was insanity.
• 13:42
And, and, uh, like I stumbled o- across that, that documentary and I was like, "God, we, we should do an event like to celebrate, you know, how this all started." And, uh, so that's kinda how it began.
• 13:55
And then, then my buddy Joe and I got really excited about building up some old Schwinn's. I have a '39 Pre-War. I put like sunrise bars on and I built up and it's, it's pretty sweet. Hmm. And, uh,
• 14:07
so we, we decided to do this event and, um, it's, it's been pretty good. You know, it's a lot of fun. It, it's a race in quotations. Mm-hmm. It's not like, uh- Exactly the kind of stuff-... Supercross, but uh...
• 14:17
yeah, exactly the kinda stuff we like to do. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. It, it's just, it's just another different theme for a, a fun ride.
• 14:25
We have several rides throughout the year that are themed differently, and this, this one just celebrates the beginning of everything. And, uh, this year it's on May 6th.
• 14:34
We do it on the first, you know, Saturday of the month and, and, uh, we're... You know, bring, bring anything, man.
• 14:40
Like, seriously, you know, we love the old Pre-War stuff or, you know, like, uh, vintage mountain bikes from the '80s and '90s or department store stuff.
• 14:50
Just, just anything that you think might actually, like, m- maybe won't survive, like, or fall apart- [laughs]... as the event goes on. Like bring it,
• 14:59
bring it and, and just shred w- with it and see, let's see what happens, you know? Sometimes it's a little muddy here, uh, that time of year- No, no thick slugs-... so that adds some fun to it... for me...
• 15:07
'cause it's kinda greasy. Yeah. Yeah. So it's like, it's super fun. So yeah, spread the word. We're really excited about it. Um, and, uh- So you're re- Yeah... you're recommending chunky tires? Chunky. Yeah.
• 15:20
Tell us a little about the course. Yeah. Yeah. How, what's the, what's the course, uh, kinda layout like? Is it, uh- So this year, this year we're gonna change it up.
• 15:27
Last year we did our full single track run and it was a little bit too long and people got too spread out.
• 15:32
So this year what we're gonna do is all our rides leave from Limestone Brewers, at our brewery, um, and return there because we're smart.
• 15:40
And, uh, so we'll leave from there, we'll do a group, casual group ride out to our, our farthest away single track loop, which is called Junkyard Goat.
• 15:49
It was an old junkyard back in the day and there's different like old car parts we've drug out and, and laid ac- around, you know, offside of the trail. So it's- Oh, jungle cross... it's pretty, uh, visually cool.
• 16:01
So we'll go out there, do a casual ride out there, and then we're gonna, um, do a, uh, a site lap and then a couple laps on there for the actual race, and then we'll come back to the brewery and, uh, hand out...
• 16:14
I've got first, second and third trophies with cash prizes, and then we'll do a skid mark contest- Oh, yeah... uh, back at the brewery. Is that coaster brake only or can you do a- Yeah...
• 16:24
can you do a lever operated one too? Uh, whatever you wanna do, you know? [laughs] And, and, and I'm talking about- Calling Kenny Nielsen... skid marks on the pavement. Yeah. Well, yeah.
• 16:34
Or like maybe just throw a beer can down and see who can grab that beer can and slide it the furthest or something. And slide the furthest. Yeah. Exactly. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Good stuff.
• 16:40
And if somebody's got skid marks in their shorts that are long enough to win, we'll, you know- [laughs]... that will count. But- I remember-... you know, preferably on the pavement- I think it was the eventual-...
• 16:49
in front of the brewery... WTF category, "Okay, you didn't win that, but you won this." [laughs] Right. Yeah. Yeah, I think we... What did we use? So, oh, we used like a five gallon bucket lid at one of the n- um-
• 17:02
Cohesies... what do we call those things? Those, the, the thing up in Port Washington that we do with the fat bike things, I forget.
• 17:07
But those things are so slippery and you can go so far on 'em, you get really out of shape and stuff, and it gets really fun 'cause that thing slides real well. [laughs] Oh, that's... Yeah. Yeah, let's do that then.
• 17:20
And then you can use the, and then- Sounds great... and then you can use the other part of the five gallon bucket for bucket ball, which is, I don't know if it was invented in Iowa, but I'm gonna say it was.
• 17:28
Probably over in- It was perfected- Probably over in Decorah if, if nowhere else... it was, it was perfected just off Brady Street- Right... about four years ago. Yeah. Positively that's true.
• 17:36
[laughs] So yes, it, it, it- In the, in the, in a- Yes, during one of my gray outs, yes, we've played- In the, uh, in the- [laughs]... in the Pulaski Park, uh- Yes. After show 100 of- Oh, yeah...
• 17:46
a different incubation of a thing. That would've been a good thing. That was, wa, wa, wa, wa, wa, wa, wa. So Derrick, how many, how many folks do, are you expecting for this thing? It's the third year.
• 17:55
You're probably getting like a couple hundred, 5,000 people. What, what do you think? [laughs] Yeah. Yeah. You know, it's kind of a niche thing, right?
• 18:04
So like we have another event called, um, Fatoberfest, where it's a, it's a bigger mountain bike fat tire ride and we camp, uh, at Spring Park here, and we get a lot more for stuff like that in October.
• 18:17
Uh, this one, you know, if we get 20, you know, it's about, you know, 25. 20, 25 typically. Um, so it's a good enough to get a good little race going. Um, the cool thing about-...
• 18:31
Junkyard Goat is we've got what's called the Billy Bar out there. So it's like a halfway through, or three-quarters of the way through the course, it's a, it's a little bar where we hang out and take a respite.
• 18:42
Has any- So we'll have some cocktails and stuff there as people go by... any- This is probably- Has any race, quote unquote- Should have... ride? [laughs] Absolutely. It's like, yes, of course.
• 18:51
Other- Well, I'm, I'm, I'm trying to rally the troops [laughs] I'm trying to rally the- 2.5 [laughs] I'm trying to rally the troops for this one, so, uh, we've- [laughs]...
• 18:58
we've got semi-commitments from- You're smiling. Come on, give us something... four or five of the Decorah folks, and some from Milwaukee over here, and, uh, I don't know. It just sounds like a good- Correct...
• 19:07
just, it sounds like a good thing to do to me. So. Sh- yeah. Well. And I can't g- It's a lot of fun. I don't know if you... Go ahead.
• 19:14
I was just gonna say, I can't get to Iowa often enough, so that just makes another good excuse to get there. There you go. That's right. That's right. You know, it's, uh, it's a fun event. We'll have a lot of fun.
• 19:25
I hope it's muddy, you know, when it's, it's more fun when it's just a mud- Stinks... mud fest. [laughs] Muddy and 70 versus muddy and 40, I'll go for. I mean- Fuck yeah... yeah. Ex- yeah.
• 19:35
We'll- [laughs] I'll call that in, so we'll make sure- There we go... of that. You got a, you got a river there or a pond or something to clean off after the, uh, after the event? Yeah, we got the Cedar River.
• 19:44
We got the Cedar River. It's got... Yeah, so we can- Springfield, uh... we can do that. Oh, is that- Does it shrink? That's be- [laughs] Springfield Nuclear Plant over there? Yeah.
• 19:55
[laughs] But that's before it gets down to Cedar Rapids where it becomes really, really nasty, isn't it? Right, right. We'll blame that on them. Well, top of the hill. Yeah. Yeah. No, we only... Yeah. We already...
• 20:06
We're at another hill. It's like a camel today. We got two humps on this thing, for crying out loud.
• 20:11
I gotta give you a- Uh, so just w- i- in general, notwithstanding that there's gonna be an event there on May the th- May the f- how does that work? [laughs] Something about sixth. Some Star Wars reference or something.
• 20:23
Yep, May the 6th. May the fifth, Sith be- At 2- The Sith... 2:00 PM we leave from the brewery. Okay. Limestone Brewers right in Osage. Um, you know, we've got a Facebook page, Mitchell County Mountain Goats.
• 20:36
It is a private group. Uh, hop on there, ask to join. So long as there's a bike and some sort of picture with you, we'll let you in, and, uh- Right... you can, you can get a lot of information there.
• 20:46
I don't have anything else. But it's, it's May 6th at 2:00 PM in Osage at the brewery. The only brewery in town. Plenty of places to stay. Uh, weather permitting, there's camping, there's VRBOs.
• 20:57
Um, you know, stay the night, have fun, and, and enjoy Mitchell County and Osage. So we're excited to see some people from out of town, and- Cool... and, uh- I like it... and have a good turnout, so. Right on.
• 21:09
So- Go, g- not, so going back just to the trail system, nothing to do with the event in particular, what ki- what kind of trail system do you have? How, how many miles of trails? Is there elevation change?
• 21:20
Is it along the river? Or what do you got going? Well, how much time do you have? Couple of, two, three minutes. No, [laughs] as much as you want. Yeah. You're the, you're the star.
• 21:30
We- First of all, you're the star of this show. The more you talk- Mm-hmm... the less we look like idiots, so. And the less we have to. Yeah. Garon T. Let's- You've heard exactly my goddamn- So excited... contribution.
• 21:40
Yeah, hello. Hey. Hello. Hel- happy Halloween. [laughs] What? Is it October already? All right, yeah, so, so- What's with the walls? So do- Well, I'm, I'm kind of a, I'm kind of a newbie. I'm late to the bike scene.
• 21:51
You know, I'm only, been at this for six or seven years now. I, you know, Levis, Cayuna, a l- I just l- fell in love with biking, and, uh, just couldn't get enough of it.
• 22:05
And in 2019, I decided maybe we should have some trails here, and we could do it along the Cedar River. We've got some elevation. You know, for Iowa it's not much, but it's some.
• 22:15
And so we started, uh, put a group together, Mitchell County Mountain Goats, and started to, uh, to build trail by hand, and a lot of grassroots efforts.
• 22:23
We've got around five miles of single track currently, and single track and double track combined, you can ride up the river, up to Mitchell and back, and get about- Nice... 20 miles in right now.
• 22:34
We've got plans for a lot more in the future, and we're currently adding, already working on adding stuff. We've already had some trail work days this, this spring. Um, so a lot, you know, coming up.
• 22:47
We, Mason City has, has a great trail system, and they're gonna be doing some wonderful things. They've got some grant money. And so we wanna make kind of this Northeast Iowa a little bit of a des- mini destination.
• 23:00
We're not gonna ever be a, you know, a, a Levis or a Cayuna, but on a m- Oh... on a smaller scale- I beg to differ...
• 23:07
you know, uh- Come on, D- throw Decorah in there, 'cause there ain't no better riding in the Midwest than Decorah, Iowa. Decorah. I tell you what. Yep. Decorah's fun too. You know, and I, I just...
• 23:16
But we're just chipping away at it, and, uh, so- Exciting... we're relatively new, but we're really aggressive, and we're having a great time, so it, it's pretty, it's pretty fun.
• 23:26
Can you get, like, a rails to trails thing or something between, like, Mason City and Osage, and s- points east, uh, maybe ending in Decorah or at the river?
• 23:35
'Cause there's some really good stuff along the Mississippi right there at the far northeast corner of Iowa that I don't think anybody really knows about- Right...
• 23:42
anymore, but there's some beautiful mountain bike trails in there. Yeah, definitely. Um, yeah, we're kind of focusing on that green belt double track and, and feathering in single track along the river. Um,
• 24:00
so yeah, I mean, we've got a lot, a lot of stuff planned, and, and, uh, yeah, it, it's just, it's just fun, you know? I love- Exciting... laying out trails and building trails. I just love it.
• 24:12
Almost as much as riding, so. [laughs] Yeah, sometimes- There you go... sometimes creating something and then riding it yourself and going, "I did that." I done did that.
• 24:19
[laughs] That's just, that's really a sense of accomplishment, for sure. Well, Junkyard Goat was my first kinda crack at it, and I just was going through a divorce and went out in the woods, you know?
• 24:32
And [laughs] kinda came out, and there was a trail there when I, when I walked out of the, out of the brush. So it's, it's a nice, it's a nice loop. People that come and ride it really love it.
• 24:42
Um- And we've had a lot of good compliments, and like I said, with Mason City, uh, you know, doing a lot with, with their trail system within 30 miles, it's an...
• 24:51
Hopefully it'll be a nice little mini destination down the road, so. Very cool. Nice. All right. Well, we're, it's, uh, it's definitely on the calendar.
• 24:58
I'm twisting arms and, and, and, and beating people up to do this thing, so- Dude... hopefully we'll see yous out there... stop it. Oh, geez. Well, you know- He's beating arms getting twisted...
• 25:07
you know if y'all kiss, you know if y'all kiss me here, it's, it's a party, so. Yeah, yeah, for sure. Absolutely. Why? All right, Derek, well, thanks. You know what, you know what we're doing over here. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
• 25:16
Absolutely. Well, thanks very much for, uh, filling everybody in and, uh, by cracky, y'all should be going to Iowa is what I'm saying. Yeah. We'll see everybody March 6th. All right. In Osage at the brewery.
• 25:28
I- Let's have fun. All right. Right on. All right, Derek. Whoa. Run what you brung. Run what you brung. Thank you very much.
• 25:34
[laughs] I actually, again, talk, what, we, we gotta talk to you again, especially after the event to go- Hell yeah... do a post-mortem on this thing. Or a current-mortem. Current-mortem. All right. 10-419 over.
• 25:44
Thanks, thanks Derek. [laughs] Peace, guys. All right. [laughs] Thanks for having me. [laughs] Thanks, man. All right, Ch- Christopherson there. What? What? Hmm? All right, everybody.
• 25:55
That would be, uh, our buddy Derek from Osage, Iowa with the, mm, something mayhem in May. There, there's a flyer. Just look at the show notes. Yeah. Nobody ever- Yeah, it's true...
• 26:04
honestly, nobody ever- You were here [laughs]... nobody ever really looks at the freaking show notes anymore. Yes, they do. I do. Cut it out. All right. But if you do- I have to...
• 26:11
if you do, check out the eBay listings, 'cause- And it has-... we're, we're going broke over here... delightful pictures-... in pelican case that's-... of you and yours You sold a bike?
• 26:18
Oh, yeah, we did sell a, we sold a bike this week. We did a lot of actual business this week for some reason. [laughs] Oddly enough, it's getting warm out and people wanna do bike stuff. How weird is that?
• 26:28
And okay, next week there might be empanadas. I like empanadas. You know what I like even more than empanadas? I- Free empanadas? I like- Yes, exactly. [laughs] I like Night Owl. [laughs] I like the Night Owl Drive-In.
• 26:42
Yes, yes, yes. Is it opening? It opened- It just opened on-... opened today... Tuesday. Oh. Tuesday a day or Friday. Or in the past. Yeah. Yeah, it just opened recently in the past. Wow. So here's the thing. Okay.
• 26:52
The other day I thought, "Ah, you know, I gotta go over to- That's a good ride though... I gotta..." First of all, gas is cheaper on the south side of town for some reason. It's fun- And also, it's right-...
• 27:00
to ride your bicycle... it's over- It's fun to ride your bike. It's over by Harbor Freight. It's really far away. It's like- Yeah, it is... miles and miles. It's on a track. It's a track...
• 27:07
so I d- and to go to Night Owl, that's a all-day trip to go to Night Owl on a bike. Then you buy two. Really? Yeah. Oh, on your bike. [laughs] Okay, except here, okay, okay, okay, okay, wait, wait, wait, okay, okay.
• 27:16
Come on. I, I gotta tell you. Okay, okay, okay. 12:40, I get there. Guess what? Not taking any more orders. We ran out of meat already at 12:14- Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm... in the PM. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
• 27:26
I was like, I was like- When do they open, 10? Uh, I think it might have been- Well, on opening fucking day, come on now... opening second day. I thought everybody got their fill yesterday. Oh, hells bells.
• 27:34
Two days, five days ago. Anyway, uh, if you're in Milwaukee and you are here more than a month after the open, you probably won't run out of meat till about 3:00 in the afternoon, so.
• 27:43
[laughs] Just order food when you- So guess where I went instead, Tony? Tony, Tony, guess where I went. [laughs] Guess who I saw? I saw Damien. Oh, what'd you get?
• 27:51
So I went to s- I went to s- ham wrap 'cause that's my thing there. Oh. Or meatball sandwich, which I did not do today. Ham wrap. I'm gonna say- It's, it's a very repellent way of saying things...
• 28:01
they just do such a, they do such a good job of it. What's it called? Did you have the Arancini in it? What's, no, no, no, no, no. It's not ham. I, no, I understand. And it's not a wrap. Ham wrap.
• 28:10
I's got me a ham I'm putting in my pocket. Delicious. Ham wrap. Ham wrap. I'm like, no, it, it just doesn't ooze- They also have a great- I'm not gonna like-... Caesar salad, chicken Caesar wrap. No- Wrap it. Wrap it...
• 28:21
I'm just saying the words ham wrap. Ham wrap. Doesn't really roll off- We, we promoted Damien a lot on this damn show. We have to have him on.
• 28:29
Oh, by the way, there's, uh, they're gonna have a beer tent during Locust Street Festival day, Bill. God, love them. Right?
• 28:38
No, they, they- I don't know the exact date, but I'm gonna go June 11th, whatever that Saturday is. Somewhere- Yeah, yeah, yeah... second Saturday in, in June I would think. To- To, to- I don't like that...
• 28:46
and it's back because it was gone for a few years. Yeah. To digress on the deliciousness- And pre-... he is up the game... progress on that it, uh, uh, what's his face, uh, Tim from Black Husky is kinda, "Hey, I'm kinda
• 29:05
running the ship on it." Well, that's probably better than who used to run it, 'cause I think they were- Linneman... just doing it to make some money. It wasn't Linneman's, it was Track's.
• 29:12
No, yeah, they still are actually. Oh. Sh- What- Yeah, Tim's been arguing... Well, I'm not gonna get into that. No pol- Oh, no, no, no... no, no politicking. I'm not, I'm not gonna go there.
• 29:19
No, no Locust Street politicking on the- No, no, no, no. Oh, dude, I, I, I already... Oh, uh, I'll talk to you. [burps] Oh, no. Excuse me. [exhales] There, you get it all? Oh, now it stinks in here too. Yeah. Yeah.
• 29:32
It's like I, I just- It's not me... I just face farted. [laughs] So, okay. So, okay. [laughs] Okay, so here's another thing I wanted to just bring up.
• 29:40
Remember last week we talked about how Kitsbow is closing and how much- Yeah... we love Kitsbow stuff? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Apparently there's a dude whose, I guess his name is T- Treat or Tweet or Tweak or something.
• 29:49
Uh- Tweed. Tweak. Treat, I believe is it. Okay. Um, they've set up an online- [snores]...
• 29:57
uh, exchange, so if you have a piece of Kitsbow you no longer want or need, or you are looking for a certain thing, you may find a community-driven marketplace where you list it, they take 15%, and you can find and or sell/buy your old Kitsbow stuff, which is awesome because I have two shirts that are not exactly the right shirt anymore,
• 30:19
so. Why is that great? I have one shirt that I love so very much, because they made two different cuts. I like the icon cut.
• 30:25
I tried the regular, bigger, beefier cut, and it's, was just like a tent, and I'm like, "That's too big for me." Okay. So, uh, this is apparently a place you can list your stuff. Uh, link in the show notes, by the way.
• 30:36
I'm not gonna tell you what it is. No. So you look at show notes, yeah. Yeah. Oh. We are pointing you- Trippers... verbally in the direction. Oh. And if you're listening to this and you're hard of hearing,
• 30:49
well- Turn up your hearing aid Them are being very incisive. Uh, hang on. Okay.
• 30:58
[laughs] I gotta, I gotta give- You know that feline AIDS is the number one cause of death in domestic house cats per annum, you know? Wah, wah. I need to give props to Gomez- [laughs]...
• 31:15
even, even though I am loathe to do it at sometimes. [laughs] Uh, remember how we always talk about how crappy Vee tires are? Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. All the time. Mm-hmm.
• 31:25
So he did a, some kind of a review on a thing called a Panorama Cycles Torn, Tornat. I, it's, it's a fat bike. El Tornato. It's a fat bike, a steel fat bike. It sounds like a El Fat Bike- Who, who knew?-...
• 31:38
Fat-o Bike-o You can go check that out on fatbike.com. But the, the salient point here is that he says, "Our test bike came with a set of Vee tire snow avalanche tires, 27.5 by 4.5.
• 31:52
And I have to say that Vee tires suck gnome balls." [laughs] [laughs] Tires have a huge influence on how a fat bike feels. So- A- and- Why would you- They do, they do...
• 32:02
why would you put those shitty tires on a really nice bike? Yeah. I mean- I'm sorry, Vee tire, your tires suck, at least in the f- Yeah... fat bike realm. You make- Every one I've ever ridden has sucked. I'm sorry...
• 32:11
for, for electric bikes, I'm sure it doesn't matter because you can push around an extra- Mm... 40 pounds and- Yeah... overcome a bunch of resistance with- That's the point of the pushing of the button.
• 32:22
Is it, I'm not sure if it's, I'm not sure if it's just the weight. I just think it's the design. No, it's the rubber compound. Yeah, it's the rubber compound. It's the carcass and the rubber compound.
• 32:28
There's something wrong with them. I'm sorry. Thanks, Vee tire. I know you may be- All right, lassie... getting us stuff on cross but- You're gonna make me wear a rubber. Yeah. [laughs] Ru- [laughs] A rumor?
• 32:38
[laughs] And, and, and, and, and, and, and on that note. [laughs] Thanks very much for listening. Thanks to Derek for calling in and mostly saving the show and telling us about the Mayhem thing.
• 32:53
Again, there's a flyer in the show notes. I'll be better at... We'll t- talk about it again. Hey, you know what? Oh, wait, wait, wait. I got it right here. Oh, Christ. No.
• 33:00
Oh, I gotta, I gotta move it, I gotta move it, I gotta move it, I gotta move it. Yes. May Day Mayhem. See? I was close. May Day. I just forgot the day portion. Mayhem. That would be May 6th, 2023 in Osage, Iowa.
• 33:09
Whatever. That's in fucking May. We haven't even hit goddamn April, bitch. Y- it's gonna go so fast, just like March did. It went so fast. Wow. It's the fucking end of the month already, brah, today. Yep.
• 33:20
I hope, I want, yes. 10-4. [laughs] One night. [laughs] Over.
• 33:34
  [outro music]
