- 0:00Don't forget. This is just the start of things here tonight we're recording this.
- 0:03I'm in Burlington, Vermont as we record this during the day because we've
- 0:06got yukon Hockey tonight at the top of the hour, as the ice bus
- 0:10looks to get some offense generated after a struggle against Chee Mass Lowell seven o'clock
- 0:15after Gito show here on the network. I mean, the two low goaltenders
- 0:20who played so well last week are in the top ten nationally and save percentage
- 0:24and goals against average, so that was not a fluke over the week.
- 0:27It's crazy. You can help with the offense. Yeah, hockey's crazy.
- 0:31I tell Calvo all the time. I said, how you get fifty shots
- 0:34and the other guys get fifteen and you lose? I said, that's not
- 0:36possible. And you got to have a little bit of luck, you know,
- 0:40you puck luck, he calls it. You know, you got to
- 0:42hope that you keep taking chances and you keep putting yourself out there and you
- 0:47know you're going to get your share. But man, it's got to be
- 0:50frustrating as hell to sometimes dominate a game. And it happened in the last
- 0:55game of the year they had last year in the playoffs. Yep, they
- 0:58played lowll same type of system, low scoring. Yeah, yeah, absolutely,
- 1:03you just got to find a way to sneak that thing in there and
- 1:07hope for the best. Yep. Well, hopefully it gets going this weekend.
- 1:11G know, you're a guard heavy oriented team, not only page Asy.
- 1:15Caroline can be both afford and a guard. Nika's back, you got
- 1:19K Karen on the lineup. I mean, the dynamic and the possibilities here
- 1:23if everybody stays healthy seems to be endless with with your guard group and the
- 1:26freshman too for that matter. Yeah, I hope, so, I hope.
- 1:34I hope. It's a big strength of ours that we can use.
- 1:37You know, I think they're they're versatile. There's a difference between all of
- 1:42them. You know. KK is not like uh Nica and Nika's not like
- 1:49KK, and Ashlands not like Page, and Pages not like Ashland, and
- 1:53Q's not like Carol, and Carol's not like you. So we've got so
- 2:00versatility there and it'll be interesting to see how it plays out, but certainly
- 2:06it's one of the biggest strengths of our team. I think they handled the
- 2:10ball pretty well. They passed it pretty well, they shoot it pretty well.
- 2:17We just have to make sure we're good, really good and solid defensively,
- 2:23and I think we will be, and I think it'll show out that
- 2:29our guards are going to dictate a lot of times how the game goes.
- 2:34Do you know, for a lot of reasons last year, particularly the injury
- 2:37bug, you're playing five six players a game, and the turnovers mounted because
- 2:40of fatigue a lot of playing time. I mean, the numbers were staggering
- 2:46last season from a Yukon standpoint of how big the turnover numbers were, and
- 2:50of course we saw that in the last game of the season against Ohio State.
- 2:54Obviously that's going to be a big point of emphasis to clean up this
- 2:57season, and it should, in theory happen because of what you've got back
- 3:00and what you've got coming in. You would think you would think, Yes,
- 3:07I think we were a little bit of challenged last year. We had
- 3:12players that could do one thing really really, really well, and it was
- 3:20maybe a struggle to add some things to their game. I think the the
- 3:28turnover thing will be much much better, but I don't know, because you
- 3:32know we're gonna play faster. There's gonna be more possessions, So I don't
- 3:38know. I'm hoping that there'll be a big then in it, but I
- 3:44think that remains to be seen. And as long as we're playing fast and
- 3:51we're we're playing aggressive, there's some turnovers I can live with, and then
- 3:57obviously there's something you can't live right, just general question from that Ohio State
- 4:02game. It had to be a very helpless feeling watching that stretch late first,
- 4:08early second, where possession after possession didn't go well. Just to see
- 4:12that, regardless of what you try to implement, just didn't work, and
- 4:16you felt awful for those young ladies to see that happen. Yeah, I
- 4:23don't know what it was. I don't know whether we just we didn't prepare
- 4:26them well enough for the magnitude of the injuries and the minutes played and Ohio
- 4:33State all that combined to really deflate us mentally. And I think once you're
- 4:45deflated mentally, it's very difficult to perform at a high level physically. So
- 4:53that's something that I hope we can alleviate by having more bodies that can ply.
- 5:00I felt bad as well. I thought we were better than that,
- 5:05and I think we we didn't really show a great version of ourselves. That's
- 5:11for sure. Go to the bigs now. I mean, we know we
- 5:15get from Aaliyah Ice Brady's going to be counting on a lot this year,
- 5:18even though she's never played a college game, but it sounds like she's got
- 5:23game. Knock on wood. You hope Aubrey stays healthy. And then the
- 5:26two X factors Omari and Yanna, what do you think from your front court
- 5:31this season? Obviously people are gonna have to step up because of I don't
- 5:34know, I don't if I call it lack of depth. But from the
- 5:36really size factor, you don't have a whole ton of size that plays on
- 5:42a regular basis, it seems like, yeah, I guess you could say
- 5:47it is a lack of a lack of depth and certainly a lack of experienced
- 5:54depth. So you know, you've got Aliyah that's played a lot of games,
- 5:59Aubrey off know them because of her her injuries. You know, Yanna
- 6:02has hardly played any basketball here. H Ice has played no basketball here up
- 6:09to this point. Almari's played very little basketball here. So it's like we
- 6:15don't have depth in numbers, and we don't necessarily have depth and experience.
- 6:23So those are two things that we have to be careful with because they could
- 6:29be a derailing factor. And we have to be really smart about how we
- 6:35play with those guys, and they have to be really smart and making sure
- 6:42that we make great decisions and don't commit silly fouls. It gets us on
- 6:46the bench and puts the puts the team in a bad spot. So yeah,
- 6:51it's going to be something that we're gonna have to manage all season.
- 6:56But you know, we've We've had less and done a lot, So I'm
- 7:02okay with it. I'm okay with it. What are fans going to see
- 7:05when they see Ice Brady on the floor for the first time. What type
- 7:10of game does she have? Well, I'm hoping that she you know,
- 7:14she plays well for her you know that she enjoys playing in the lane and
- 7:24outside the lane, that she gets herself in a position where she can get
- 7:30some buckets easily. She's left handed, so sometimes that catches people by surprising.
- 7:34She's a really good shooter, and I'm hoping that she adds another dimension.
- 7:41You know, I know we had dorcall last year, but this this
- 7:46is a little bit, a little bit different and I think her and Lee
- 7:48are really going to compliment each other really well, and Ice has to get
- 7:55experience. That's the only thing that's going to be missing. She just has
- 8:00not played at this level before. And the learning curve is going to be
- 8:05there for sure. All Right, Final segment with Gino coming up in a
- 8:09moment here on the Yukon Sports Network from Learfield all Right, six three,
