Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: This morning we are talking about how we,
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: as fathers of Jesus Christ,
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: as Church of the Brethren,
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: are called to invite others into obedience.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: And here's the big idea for this morning.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: God calls His people not just to live faithfully.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: but to invite others into the joy and the challenge of obedience,
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: beginning with our own households,
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: beginning with our children,
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: and then extending into the nations.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Church,
- 0:40today's word and words and scriptures that we read this morning
- 0:45invites us to
- 0:46wrestle with this holy calling to live obediently and invite
- 0:53others into that
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: obedience in the same way.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Jesus says in Matthew 5, you are the salt of the earth.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: You are the light of the world.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Salt preserves, it flavors, it makes people thirsty.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Light drives out darkness.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: What good is salt if it stays in the salt shaker?
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: What good is light if it hides underneath a basket?
- 1:33This is Jesus' way of saying to us,
- 1:38your life is meant to invite others towards God.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: And then at the close of Matthew,
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: we have this Matthew 28,
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: the Great Commission,
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: and it echoes this again.
- 1:55It says,
- 1:56go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
- 2:01teaching them to,
- 2:03what?
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Obey everything that I have commanded you.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Notice,
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: not just information that we're supposed to be teaching,
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: not just passing along nice ideas about God,
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: but teaching obedience,
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: calling people into a life of discipleship.
- 2:27We are called to invite others not just to believe,
- 2:32but to live differently in this world.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: In Genesis 12,
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: as we have heard a number of times this morning,
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: when God calls Abram,
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: He doesn't say,
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: I'm going to bless you so that you can have a nice,
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: comfortable life.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: He says,
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: I will bless you,
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: and because of that,
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: all peoples in all of the earth will be blessed through you.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: From the very beginning...
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: God calls us to bless the world in belief of God.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: God calls us to be outward facing, not inward focused.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Walter Brueggemann,
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: who is one of my favorite theologians,
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: he's an Old Testament theologian,
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: he reminds us God's people must always live with,
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: for,
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: and among others in the world.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: That is not an optional extra.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: It is the very DNA of what our faith is all about.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: We do not withdraw to some sort of private holiness.
- 3:50We are to live our obedience in public so that others might
- 3:54taste and see that.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: John Howard Yoder,
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: who is an Anabaptist theologian,
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: once said,
- 4:01the church is called to be now what the world is called to
- 4:07become ultimately.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: When we live as a community of blessing in the world,
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: we give the world a glimpse of what God's future for us is.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: The brethren motto, if you don't know it already, echoes this.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: It is a calling.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: It says, for the glory of God and what?
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Does anybody know?
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, seriously, come on.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Let's try that again.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: For the glory of God and?
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Very good.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Obedience, thank you much for that, is not about ourselves.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: It is always aimed at our neighbor's blessing.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: I don't tweet a whole lot,
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: but it seemed easiest to put some things in tweetable form today,
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: if you happen to tweet or on social media.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: And the reason that I sort of chose to do this,
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: in particular for this message,
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: is because we're outward facing.
- 5:20We're trying to share the joys that we have and the blessings
- 5:24that we have
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: outwardly.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And today, of course, a lot of that happens where?
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: On social media.
- 5:32And so I'm going to give you some tweetable tweets,
- 5:35some shareable socials today.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: If you happen to want to do that,
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: if you want,
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: you can take a picture with the tweetable tweet up there,
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: tweet it,
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: or just ignore me while I do this.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Tweetable tweet.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: God blesses us so that we can bless others.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Faith was never meant to be what?
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Private property, right?
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: The early brethren understood this really, really deeply.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: Interestingly,
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: in the book that we're following along,
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Let Our Joys Be Known,
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: right at the very beginning of chapter 5,
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: it says this.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: The early brethren were very evangelistic.
- 6:15They worked hard at inviting others to make the same choice for
- 6:21radical obedience
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: that they were making at that time.
- 6:26Now,
- 6:27important to note,
- 6:28they weren't selling eternal fire insurance,
- 6:32okay?
- 6:33They were inviting neighbors into a whole new way of life that
- 6:39at that time was
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: actually fairly dangerous to live into.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: One marked by simplicity, community, peace, and discipleship.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Donald Durnbaugh,
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: who is a Brethren scholar,
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: has written a number of books about Brethren history,
- 6:54describes the Brethren movement in the 1700s as the forerunner
- 7:00for the great
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: awakening among the American colonies.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: I didn't know that.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: Pretty incredible stuff here.
- 7:07That's how powerful this imitation of the early Church of the
- 7:11Brethren was.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: It sparked renewal that reshaped our entire continent, right?
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: Merle Crows shows us how two main approaches were used.
- 7:23The first was home community missionary work,
- 7:26and the second was emigration or colonization.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: I don't really like that word because it's kind of dirty,
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: but nonetheless,
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: that's what she called it.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Some stayed rooted in their towns,
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: in their homes,
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: invited friends and neighbors into a life that lived differently.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: And others,
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: like I did when I went to Italy as a missionary,
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: carried that message across seas and prairies.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: But both were saying the same thing.
- 7:53This life of obedience is too good for us not to share it with
- 7:59our friends and our families.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Howard Thurman,
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: who was a theologian and involved in the whole civil rights movement,
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: he wrote this.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Don't ask what the world needs.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Don't ask what the world needs.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Ask what makes you come alive and go do it.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: The brethren invited people into aliveness in Jesus Christ.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: A while ago,
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure how many months ago,
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: but certainly in the last year that I was here,
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: I was asked to lead a study on the book For My Neighbors.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 8:47It was a study about this kind of thing,
- 8:50sharing our testimony on our life with Jesus Christ.
- 8:53And in that book,
- 8:54we're reminded that evangelism is not memorizing a scripture or
- 9:00winning arguments with people who disagree with us about God or
- 9:04Jesus Christ.
- 9:05It's about unlocking our personal testimonies and connecting
- 9:10them with our
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: neighbors and our friends.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Think of a championship basketball team.
- 9:18I'm not a real big fan of sports,
- 9:20as you know,
- 9:20but nonetheless,
- 9:21I still use sports analogies.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: So think about a basketball team,
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: a champions basketball team,
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: like the Golden State Warriors or Oklahoma City Thunder.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: My understanding is they won this year.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: Is that right?
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, some of you know that, yeah.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: I didn't until I started studying for this sermon.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: But nonetheless, they won, right?
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: Their success,
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: however,
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: as I looked at things,
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: does not come from one star alone,
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: but from disciplined teamwork,
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: relentless practice,
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: and players inviting each other into a shared rhythm.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: One selfish player who ignores the playbook weakens the whole team.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: And in the same way, evangelism is not a solo sport, right?
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: We invite others into God's rhythm of obedience,
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: and together we support one another and we shine brighter.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: So another tweetable tweet.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Evangelism is not about selling religion.
- 10:23It's about inviting others into a way of radical obedience that
- 10:28transforms life.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Psalm 78 that we read is clear.
- 10:34We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the
- 10:38Lord so that they
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God,
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: but keep His commandments.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: J. Clinton McMahon puts it beautifully.
- 10:52Psalm 78 invites us to share the good news and reminds us that
- 10:58our own children are
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: an essential part of that start.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: We've experienced that this morning.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: We've focused on that,
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: supporting our children,
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: not only as they live life here among us as a church family,
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: but as they go out.
- 11:15into the world and live their lives there obedience is learned
- 11:21mostly not in church
- 11:23actually but at the dinner table in bedtime prayers in how we
- 11:29as as parents and
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: parentals um
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: treat our neighbors, and how we model forgiveness on a day-to-day basis.
- 11:40If we do not invite our children into obedience,
- 11:44we risk breaking the chain of our witness.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Alan Kreider,
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: again,
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: a writer who I really appreciate in the Anabaptist Mennonite tradition,
- 11:56he reminds us that the spread of the church was not
- 11:58accomplished by dramatic
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: events.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: but by ordinary believers,
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: explaining their hope to their children and,
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: while they were doing that,
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: to their neighbors as well.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Friends, evangelism begins at home.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Again, from our neighbor's good, it challenges us.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Build your testimony.
- 12:21Think about how your faith has made an impact in your life and
- 12:26what choices you've
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: made because of how you follow Jesus,
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: and then share that with others.
- 12:33This practice equips us to be authentic witnesses of the work
- 12:38of Jesus Christ in our lives.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Many of us are in the agricultural business.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Who hasn't seen the corn this year?
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: Wow, yeah, from what I understand, incredible.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: Not gonna talk about corn though.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Barns, you need barns for corn, at least you used to, right?
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: In Amish communities,
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: and we all are aware of this,
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: when a barn needs to be built,
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: neighbors come together for that barn raising.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: No one does it alone.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: The invitation goes out and then dozens show up for the event.
- 13:16each contributing their own strength,
- 13:18and by the end of the day,
- 13:20there is a barn that is built.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: Our testimony to obedience as a community builds on this theme.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: Teaching our children obedience is like a barn raising.
- 13:32It takes the whole family of faith,
- 13:35inviting the next generation into the building process.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: These children that we have blessed this morning,
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: we need to remember that it takes a village to raise children,
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: right?
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: We all know that.
- 13:53And we need to commit to building their faith just as we commit
- 13:58to building ours.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Evangelism starts at home, friends.
- 14:03If we don't invite our children into obedience,
- 14:05we risk silencing our witness for the future.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: Friends,
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: when we obey Jesus Christ,
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: especially when it costs us something,
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: the world takes notice.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: Again, a sports theme.
- 14:21A team that plays with discipline and teamwork invites fans to
- 14:25join the movement as well.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: Not so many folks here, but it seems like it happens in other places.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Or farming,
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: when a field is well tended,
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: like the corn that we're seeing right now,
- 14:37neighbors notice the fruit even if they have no idea how that
- 14:41corn was planted,
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: how it's growing,
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: or how it will be harvested.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: So too with faith.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: Matthew 5 says,
- 14:51let your light shine before others so that they may see your
- 14:55good works and give
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: glory to our Father in heaven.
- 15:00The invitation isn't into just our words but in the living
- 15:05testimony of our deeds
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: on a day-to-day basis.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Dorothy Day,
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: I'm sure some of you are familiar with her,
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: she once said,
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: the best thing to do with the best things in life is to give them away.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: When we give away our lives in obedience, the light shines brightest.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: Again, one more quote from For Our Neighbors Good.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: We often refer to the Great Commission as the Great Commission.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: But perhaps it is better if we understood it as our everyday commission.
- 15:43As you are going,
- 15:45wherever you happen to be living and playing,
- 15:49make disciples.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: And I encourage the children here,
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: today,
- 15:53as you play on the playground or you stand at your locker or as
- 15:56you're learning in
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: your classrooms,
- 15:59remember that as well as your everyday commission to shine
- 16:04forth the light of Jesus
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: Christ in your daily lives.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Has anybody ever seen The Black Panther, the movie The Black Panther?
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: Not a real brethren movie, I guess, with the whole pacifism thing.
- 16:23But nonetheless,
- 16:24some pretty cool stuff in there,
- 16:26some good things to remember.
- 16:29And in that movie,
- 16:30King Takala faces a question of whether or not Wakanda will
- 16:36remain hidden
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: or whether they will open up their resources,
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: bring those resources into the light and bless the world.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: And his decision to move their culture and their life into the light,
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: to share what they have for the good of others,
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: mirrors our calling as a church of Jesus Christ.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: When we hide our light, the world stays in darkness.
- 17:05But when we live obediently and share what God has given us,
- 17:09nations are blessed.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: Last one.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: A life of obedience shines brighter than any sermon.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: I'm aware of that as well.
- 17:21Your lives are much more effective as you live them in the
- 17:26light out there than
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: anything I happen to say up here on Sunday mornings.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: Our deeds invite others to glorify God.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: So church, our calling is clear.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: God blesses us to bless others.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: Evangelism is an invitation to radical obedience.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: And we must begin with our children.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: And our obedience is the light that draws others to God.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: So, let us be bold.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: Let us live lives so salty,
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: so luminous,
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: so compelling that others cannot help but say,
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: I want to live that way too.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: Amen.
