- 0:33I'm still a little bump in my to do it quicker.
- 0:40Welcome back to a hamster with a blunt penknife the Doctor Who
- 0:44commentary podcast. It is my great pleasure today,
- 0:49to introduce to somebody, I've been trying to get on this thing
- 0:52for a long time. You know, I've been, I've been
- 0:53spinning, my wheels, trying to get this guy involved, the
- 0:57lovely mr. Jim Allenby.
- 0:58Say hello, Jim. Hello.
- 0:59Jim. Oh, well done, first time out of
- 1:02the gate. Thank you very much.
- 1:04How you doing today? I'm okay.
- 1:06Yeah. Not too bad.
- 1:07Yeah, you do for a robber? Now I have Yeah, couple of hours
- 1:11ago. Yeah, it's very cold out there
- 1:13today. You finally told I was just out
- 1:16there so for all day, you know, I felt that I don't feel bad
- 1:18about that at all. There was a very intriguing
- 1:21series of selfies on Twitter this morning, you know, between
- 1:24you and me, Lucy McCall. And it was like, that, that ham
- 1:27tram all coming together at 58. Yeah, yeah, I kind of boom, u.s.
- 1:32negating that it was great, even else was gotta work.
- 1:38I was just there tapping away. At 4:30 in the morning because,
- 1:42you know, everyone needs to hear my opinion as usual Jim.
- 1:46This is your first time doing an episode of hamster.
- 1:49I'm so pleased to have you may I ask you a few questions straight
- 1:53off the bat? Yes of course no problem.
- 1:55Okay, well I already know the answer the first one because you
- 1:58just told me of Mike during our mini rehearsal.
- 2:01However, today we are going to be watching Utopia and I Sofia
- 2:07Coppola faults initial. Before we go in what you think
- 2:10of it and what you think is Series 3.
- 2:12General. Okay.
- 2:15Okay. So Series 3, I believe for me,
- 2:19it's my personal favorite of Russell's series that he did.
- 2:24And it's absolutely my favorite tenant series.
- 2:27I think people tend to go for serious for and I do think that
- 2:33that is when everything comes together.
- 2:35I think everybody is on top of the game and series for And
- 2:40Catherine, Tate David Tennant. Absolutely fantastic together.
- 2:44Yeah, yeah. But there is something about
- 2:48Series 3, I don't know if it's because we've we've lost the
- 2:53we've lost Billie Piper and it feels fresh and you been talking
- 2:58to Fraser Gregory, all right? It's not clean.
- 3:00It's not clean on baby. Oh I absolutely.
- 3:03I love Billy Piper but I preferred her with Eccleston
- 3:07Robert. Yeah, I think the public
- 3:11preferred over tenant. I think yeah.
- 3:12That's when it hit it off with the public.
- 3:15Yeah, absolutely. And I think this is I think this
- 3:18was a bit more of a test. I mean, it was a test bringing
- 3:21in tenant after Eccleston but they passed with flying colors.
- 3:26Bringing him a risky. Move about that was as risk.
- 3:28Yeah. I've bring it in trout and after
- 3:30home? Yes.
- 3:31Absolutely. I could have all gone sure.
- 3:34Yeah. But it didn't.
- 3:36And so this was really, Another risky move because people had
- 3:41grown to love Billy and David together.
- 3:45Yeah, and and, and obviously, Chris as well.
- 3:47So within within two to three years, you've got an entirely
- 3:51different cast of actors, their family.
- 3:57Exactly a new family Jones's. I'm assuming you're a fan of
- 4:01authors then Martha's family or just Barbara General, pretty
- 4:06much. But I do like, yeah, I love, I
- 4:07love math. Yeah, I And I love her story arc
- 4:11that she goes through in this, you know.
- 4:14I don't know. I think some a lot of us have
- 4:17been in that situation before where with their unrequited.
- 4:20Yeah, Yeah. Boy, by more times than I care
- 4:24to remember you just, you know, in the end you just have to
- 4:28terminate turn around and say, you know, what better than this,
- 4:32you know, are so convinced that is still the best leaving seen
- 4:37it, is you serious, it's so honest.
- 4:39It is. He's so mature and you've been
- 4:41waiting for her to give him the two fingers, or yeah?
- 4:44Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:45If I eat it, then they have a bit of a moment over rows in
- 4:47this one that they the doctor Jack.
- 4:48Yeah, they do. Yeah.
- 4:49Yeah. And and and, and I was sad that
- 4:53she'd left because I was like, no.
- 4:56She's just begun. You know?
- 4:58Where she's gone. She's gone already.
- 4:59So, it was a bit, you know, I was a bit sad that she's gone
- 5:02because I would have liked to seen another series with her.
- 5:06And I know at the time there was I believe, I don't have to was
- 5:09Misremembering, but I think there was talk of a moon going
- 5:12into Torchwood and you did some Torchwood episodes.
- 5:14Didn't she really? Yeah.
- 5:16But but I would have liked to have seen another fall series
- 5:20with her. No, I wouldn't say giving a
- 5:24sontaran two-parter and the doctor's daughter was, you know,
- 5:28an acceptable compromise for a whole season.
- 5:30No. No, absolutely not.
- 5:34Would I be okay. I'm gonna Would I be on the
- 5:38money if I said that series 1 was like anything goes.
- 5:42Yeah, so that's exciting. Because they basically, they're,
- 5:45they're feeling their way in and the kind of doing stuff that
- 5:48they don't really do again and they find their formula.
- 5:50At the same time series 2 is almost like the difficult second
- 5:54album. Like, how can it be as good as
- 5:57series one? Is it as good as TV but that's
- 5:59entirely subjective in some ways they go bigger and Bolder in
- 6:02other ways, it's not quite as exciting.
- 6:05And For before tentative that you've got like David Tennant
- 6:10and you've got Catherine, Tate on their a game.
- 6:12And the story Telly is and the Ark storytelling, and the
- 6:16stories themselves are bold and confident, but I think three is
- 6:20where they really found their confidence.
- 6:23Because I think in Smith and Jones, I remember feeling, okay.
- 6:27Rusty Davis is super comfortable.
- 6:29Here he's gone. What a face from dinnerladies
- 6:31playing a vampire sucking blood out, someone's neck with a
- 6:34straw, you know, Wild Many get Mass, go round it.
- 6:37Doing her bidding. Other off all the shows on fire.
- 6:40At this point there isn't. There's a there's a like a style
- 6:44and a confidence to 3. Yeah.
- 6:46And an even think like down to Maury Gold music.
- 6:49I think it was what back in the day when I was buying albums on
- 6:54CDs and it was it was the Doctor Who soundtrack that I would
- 6:58always listen to sirius three. I think there's such a variety
- 7:05of music. There and I think Marie is he's
- 7:09kind of I think he's really relaxed at that point during
- 7:13Series 3 and I think in serious boring, maybe is a little bit,
- 7:19goes a lipstick, isn't it? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:21That's yeah, that's all I'm gonna tell you how to feel gym
- 7:24this week. All right.
- 7:25Yeah. So yeah, so what can I do it?
- 7:27Please? Because I was listening to this
- 7:28week and there's one track. I really like I love singing the
- 7:30music. Do you mind?
- 7:32No, not at all. Do, do, do, do do, do do.
- 7:59And what was I really run. It was it's the they don't play
- 8:05it much in Utopia. They think it's the do it.
- 8:09It's the do. Do, do, do, do.
- 8:44It's one of those stories that I think it's I think it's I think
- 8:50it's a fantastic story, but is it fantastic because of the
- 8:54master or you know, is it is it a story that could have survived
- 8:57without the master? I don't think it could have done
- 8:59personally but I think it's obviously the master that makes
- 9:05the story. It definitely was.
- 9:09Yeah, for, yeah. It's what it's what it's
- 9:11remembered for because I think if you didn't have all that in
- 9:13it, I don't know if it'd be the most exciting story in the
- 9:16world. If it was just about a bunch of
- 9:19humans going off into space to find Utopia and and then
- 9:24something happens in the next episode, you know, but with the
- 9:27master being in it, I think elevates it.
- 9:31Yeah, I don't disagree. I think the what this does that
- 9:35there's never really been done before.
- 9:36Is that the entire story is building up to that Revelation?
- 9:40Yeah, it kind of hoodwinks you in a brilliant way.
- 9:43But you know what the amount of this is what really shocked me
- 9:46watching. This was the amount of
- 9:48exposition and continuity which Russell Davis Kind of shies away
- 9:52from quite a bit, but he's got to bring Jack back and explain
- 9:56where you've been and why the doctor didn't go after him.
- 9:59They've Yeah. What have we Rose in?
- 10:00Doomsday will see. Got to set up the master using
- 10:05the watches from the family of blood?
- 10:07Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:08And I but at the same time as dealing with all that stuff from
- 10:11the past, this story is completely setting up.
- 10:15What is to come which is the master going off at the end of
- 10:19this story and together race going to Utopia which if you'll
- 10:23ask me is the darkest fucking twist they ever, did they tell
- 10:26you what happened to the human race with those little balls
- 10:28open up? Up.
- 10:30Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 10:33It's it. I think it's a very strong Bear,
- 10:36right. And one thing that really kind
- 10:38of struck me was there is a lot of exposition in here.
- 10:41This is a lot of energy as well. Yeah, whenever the exposition is
- 10:45delivered, there is something happening.
- 10:48It's not like it's in the one that just stops, right?
- 10:50We're going to tell you everything you need to know and
- 10:52then the plot will kick up again the place constantly moving in
- 10:55this. Yeah the information just keeps
- 10:57coming. I'm thinking a bit of skill.
- 10:59Think. Yeah.
- 11:00Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 11:01And I think it's it's also that I was thinking about this
- 11:04earlier on and it's one of these one of the first stories that
- 11:08because we've always had the doctor, the Tardis Daleks
- 11:11Cybermen. This is the first for me, the
- 11:13first story which starts to delve back slightly more into
- 11:17the into the show to past because not everybody on the
- 11:21general public, really know about the master.
- 11:23They they do they may have got an inkling of it but everybody
- 11:26knows dialects and Doctor Who go hand in hand.
- 11:28This is the This is the first time where they're taking, not
- 11:33not risk but they're taking a slightly deeper it goes back
- 11:37into the past year. I remember in the radio times
- 11:40that Dreadful journalist whose name, I can't remember now
- 11:43because it's Alison something. Yeah, you know I mean she really
- 11:47didn't like this at all. I think she was like she had any
- 11:49sort of new the new series. Whereas I think all the Fanboys
- 11:52out there this over this aired on my birthday, right?
- 11:55And I was at a dinner and I said, two guys.
- 11:57Sorry, I've gotta wrap this up. I don't care if there's a cake,
- 11:59Going out on its get out and see those things happening to my
- 12:02way. I want to piss off over.
- 12:04So I could go through the best birthday present I've ever had.
- 12:08I was so excited when he turned around and did his part in
- 12:11peace. Derek Jacobi and now.
- 12:14Yeah. So I heard so thanks and and did
- 12:17we, did we know that this was going to happen?
- 12:20Did we know that the master was? Because I didn't, don't remember
- 12:24if I'm remembering false memories, I'd heard a rumor but
- 12:30it was around about the same time that we got the rumors of
- 12:33Ben Kingsley being davros and and it's like do you believe it
- 12:36or do you not believe it? So I still believe that's going
- 12:39to happen, you know so well and I had a double whammy that.
- 12:43Yeah, the macra finally came up that's when the mattress here
- 12:48and then I keep saying what a time to be alive.
- 13:01Well, that should we go in and watch this thing?
- 13:04Yes. Yeah.
- 13:04Let's let me just get myself. Queued up, do us the honors of
- 13:08counting as Satan, okay. Okay.
- 13:15You got a and parcel behind you there on that wardrobe.
- 13:17I'm desperate to know what it is.
- 13:19Actually, it's a big finish CDs. I was it, I'll watch.
- 13:23You know what? Just happened to have another
- 13:25podcast, you know about that. Anyway, after that, I thought
- 13:27about that later. Okay, in five, four, three, two,
- 13:34one, go. If we go, oh good, I got the
- 13:38sound on. Sorry, my scarred it.
- 13:41Well card if we're in Cardiff And of course, following on sort
- 13:47of directly from the end of series 1 of Torchwood.
- 13:50Did you watch torch work? We did?
- 13:52Yeah, I did. Watch it.
- 13:55Pause. Then, for a second, I've got
- 13:57feel like, you didn't like it too much, I liked it.
- 14:02I like some of it. It was, it was a little bit.
- 14:07I wasn't, it wasn't what I was expecting.
- 14:09I was a bit surprised at the the, the adult content within
- 14:15it. Now as I'll probably vote.
- 14:18Yeah. The sex gas cloud.
- 14:23Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:27It was, it was a bit. I enjoyed aspects of it.
- 14:30And I enjoyed. I enjoyed the second.
- 14:32More I do too. Yeah.
- 14:34Did you just like they all turned out some of the Kinks of
- 14:36the characters in the second year?
- 14:37Yeah, definitely. I think they make them a lot
- 14:39more likeable killed. Most of them off the hook.
- 14:42Yeah. And just hope they killed off.
- 14:44Lovely. Tosh.
- 14:45I know I know I love Tosh. Absolutely love the big finish
- 14:49audios. She's terrific.
- 14:51I've been listening to the big finish audios.
- 14:53There's a lot of big finisher need to listen to do you think?
- 14:56Okay we're here you have a question, you dry off.
- 14:58Do you think then? Because Torchwood has slightly
- 15:01adult Content that seeing Torchwood and Doctor Who sort of
- 15:05weaving them in together because it's almost encouraging kids to
- 15:08go off and watch it even possible.
- 15:13Well, it's interesting because I think, when Series 2 of
- 15:17Torchwood came out, they did some cut down versions of them
- 15:21and showed I'm sure they showed them on BBC, Two on like Friday
- 15:24nights, where they cover the more certain.
- 15:28Yeah. So I think it was near enough
- 15:31impossible for him to do any kind of cut down versions from
- 15:33series 1, but I'm pretty certain they did some cut down versions
- 15:38on foods to Supercar prefer to watch those versions.
- 15:42Yes, sex. And swear it.
- 15:44Take it out. Yeah, and I don't know if they
- 15:46did that bit too. So, kind of encase kids did
- 15:51watch it. Because maybe they had the plan
- 15:53to, you know, eventually merge them together at the end of
- 15:57series four, bro, in the Sarah, Jane Adventures.
- 16:00And we do not worry about the kids after that, they were in
- 16:02the office. A safe pair of hands with a
- 16:04little flavor. Yeah, exactly.
- 16:06Exactly. And can I ask you, do you think
- 16:08there's anything finer than a quarry at night?
- 16:11Oh, talk about this being Like classic Doctor Who I know, I
- 16:14know. And is this, it was this the
- 16:16first planet that we really go to or we visited the planet
- 16:20before and no, you know, we may have seen glimpses and I we went
- 16:26to in the Satan pit we were on were on and that was an
- 16:32asteroid. Really?
- 16:32Yeah. Oh an Army of Ghosts, they're
- 16:34standing on and they lie about it like a two second clip
- 16:37Woody's. Yeah.
- 16:38Line about looking very beautiful.
- 16:40The I think you might be right. Yeah, it was something I was
- 16:43thinking about earlier on, it's very cute, but they've gone back
- 16:46to the old methods of night. Let's do a core Parish Rusty
- 16:49pixel saying in the commentary he went.
- 16:51I guys every time I see that quarry r/cringe David, Tennant's
- 16:55going, y goes yeah we're both classic Doctor Who fans you
- 16:58guys. I know he goes but we should be
- 17:00better than this now, you know? And they're just not God.
- 17:06Look what either one, other tiny bit of trivia.
- 17:08I promise, I will not keep jumping back to the commentary,
- 17:11it's so funny. I've got silly but they were
- 17:13desperate to have John Barrowman, clinging onto the
- 17:17Tardis in the title sequence but they said, because I didn't have
- 17:20time to do it. That's why they put in the sort
- 17:23of the Mad Max. Oh, and beings in before that
- 17:26the titles, otherwise it would have cut it just here and clean
- 17:29it on. It's been great.
- 17:33Yeah, absolutely. Okay.
- 17:37Jeff Derek Jacobi is here. Mmm-hmm one of the best turns?
- 17:42Yeah, yeah. Youyou've is wonderful, isn't
- 17:46he? I mean, and to play two separate
- 17:49characters, basically in, in the episode and want to be so
- 17:54lovable. Yeah.
- 17:56And then to be, you know, to be completely changed into such a
- 18:02different person. Okay, think of one other actor
- 18:05that has done that As accomplished and that is such
- 18:08the wrong inspire people. Yes, exactly.
- 18:11I went to watch cherry-picking. The past is exactly the same
- 18:14thing but it's done extremely well.
- 18:16Oh, absolutely. Yeah.
- 18:18Anything else. I saw him an episode of inside
- 18:23number 9. Was it last year?
- 18:27I feel I must have seen him in other things as well.
- 18:31I've never seen that thing up Pompeii there that's not that's
- 18:34not the one that's. It was hardly ever seen.
- 18:36Really fine clothes. Thank you very much.
- 18:42It's Frankie how earn it. Yeah.
- 18:46But I will say this yeah, he is his performances in the war.
- 18:52Master big finish boxes. I mean we were denied a
- 18:56fantastic Master. You see I've heard that so many
- 19:00times and I'm really tempted to dip into those because some
- 19:05yeah, I mean, I've got a bit of a LoveHate Thing with big
- 19:11finish. I absolutely love them and
- 19:12that's perfectly natural but I can't keep up with what they're
- 19:16releasing at the moment. It is know what, what do I
- 19:18listen to what do, what do I leave?
- 19:20What do I, you know. So, but the choice is now, Jim
- 19:24is with you feed yourself or buy every Big Fish Box each month.
- 19:28You know, is that I'm very tempted to dip into the Jacobi.
- 19:36Master boxsets. Well we'll talk our way.
- 19:39I'll give you a couple of recommendation.
- 19:40It's you like and I'll let you know when they're going cheap as
- 19:42well. Pack up your contacts.
- 19:47Okay. Dare I mentioned.
- 19:48John Barrowman, are we allowed? Yeah, I think we can.
- 19:56I think we can. It's a bit of a difficult one,
- 19:59isn't it? Because I love, I absolutely
- 20:02love Jack and I the pairing of pairing the tightest team of him
- 20:11and Eccleston and Piper. I absolutely love that.
- 20:14And I would have loved to have seen more stories of those
- 20:17three. And so, I've always I've always
- 20:22really liked the character But regardless of different of
- 20:26English, like it before every like a sexy sassy bisexual
- 20:32character, you know? Now it is something so good.
- 20:36Was, it was, it was something that it was, it just something
- 20:40so new to the, to the series. I remember at the time, when
- 20:45Jack came into it, it was just after it was not long after.
- 20:49What do we had do? We have an atom?
- 20:52That's right. Darling.
- 20:53Long day. Yeah.
- 20:54And I remember my mom at the time saying to me when Jack came
- 20:57into it she was like preferred the other guy own knowledge.
- 21:02The irony is he's been canceled too.
- 21:04Yeah. I don't know.
- 21:06Clark series 1830? Well you know it's not my God.
- 21:11Chris, he's on Twitter all the time.
- 21:16Swearing his head off about the planet.
- 21:18Yeah, but you know, I can kind of summary table simply for me.
- 21:22That is that John Barrowman, plays Captain Jack, but Captain
- 21:26Jack is not John Barrowman. Yes.
- 21:28So I can separate the actor and the character and enjoy the
- 21:31character. Yeah, I think you can.
- 21:34I think you can so much else goes into creating a character
- 21:40under the it's the performance yet, it's all in the writing,
- 21:43it's the director is the chemistry of the other actors to
- 21:45Discount all of that work and say, well, that's canceled.
- 21:48So you can't watch that anymore. Yeah.
- 21:50What a load of nonsense. Yeah, you can't.
- 21:52You know, you've To eat. It's not right but it's there
- 21:58and it's again that's not John Barrowman there that's Captain
- 22:03popper. No to make a route joke or two
- 22:05on this thing or Ivar do not get my thingy out every single time
- 22:08I'm talking to you, I know there's a line, you know.
- 22:14Exactly beautiful. Special effect of the
- 22:17conglomeration. Hmm.
- 22:19And that's what Rusty Davis says.
- 22:20He wished. The whole lot could look like
- 22:22that. They were walking around that
- 22:24special that they could do it now.
- 22:25Yeah, yeah because, you know, you never you never really get
- 22:28the sense of the rest of that. Do you from this, from this
- 22:31episode? You see the Quarry with them in
- 22:34it and then you see the special effects Shop, but you never kind
- 22:37of get that kind of melding of it.
- 22:39They do that power of Crossing with are just at the bottom of
- 22:41the screen, then looking over the edge.
- 22:43Yeah, with the lion source of all, right?
- 22:45And they kind of do it, you know, what, in Planet of the
- 22:47users, when they go to the snow planet and you've got sort of
- 22:50David Tennant and Catherine Tate in a quarry.
- 22:52That's been sprayed with snow. Yeah, superimposed into this
- 22:56fabulous CGI landscape. And don't get me wrong.
- 22:58I'm not gonna piss on those effects.
- 23:01No, no. Good effects.
- 23:03But yeah, like to. Yeah, television by progresses.
- 23:08Yeah, I'm fast now. Oh, I know, I mean, you know,
- 23:11you only have to look up what the, what they're making now,
- 23:13Now with Doctor Who with Jodi's latest series and it's just, you
- 23:21know, you can watch it and I'm just astonished at how it looks
- 23:24now, it's, you know, it's absolutely fantastic in that
- 23:28fluxes and I just the imagery in that like regardless of what
- 23:32anyone thinks that the storytelling the the visuals
- 23:35like the yeah, the sort of the visual salt that you got in
- 23:38that. Yeah, I think it was covid
- 23:40related as well because they couldn't go outside so much.
- 23:43So they have to do this. Each our Landscapes.
- 23:44Yeah but yeah boy oh boy it was impressive.
- 23:47Yeah and I hope they I hope they keep with that same kind of
- 23:52visual when they when we move on to the next era.
- 23:56What's been done by Bagwell Productions and they create his
- 23:58dog materials and that is my say even A Cut Above what Doctor
- 24:02Who's doing now. Yeah.
- 24:03So yeah. Fingers crossed.
- 24:04Yeah. But do you know there's one
- 24:06thing that you can that doesn't really age and that is bloody
- 24:11good direction. Hmm.
- 24:13And this has got like a momentum and energy.
- 24:17Yeah. Life, you know, in the
- 24:20performers is in how he shot a great heart.
- 24:24Great mother's name. He's amazingly good.
- 24:29Yeah I mean look at this this is just You know, a baseball is to
- 24:35say that you can't always tell who's directing a new series
- 24:38episode but you can always tell when Graeme Harper.
- 24:42Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 24:45I saw the last 10 minutes of this.
- 24:46It's just frantic, isn't it? I know it when I first when I
- 24:51first saw it and we got to those last 10 minutes.
- 24:55I think I think it's the, the first, the first episode, maybe
- 24:58the only episode that actually I was Neil hyperventilating
- 25:03watching it. I was on the edge of my seat.
- 25:06I would like, I felt like that. This one, I felt like that in
- 25:11stolen Earth as well, when that was ramping up towards the Cliff
- 25:15Hanger and in waters of Mars in the last 10 minutes as well.
- 25:19Yes. Does that sort of pace that sort
- 25:23of building up of /? Yeah.
- 25:24Yeah, you feel it. Don't you feel you feel that
- 25:27kind of the tension kind of ramping up What?
- 25:32Okay, I'm gonna go back to Classic series.
- 25:34Again, you've got the last of humanity, which feels like a
- 25:37very Classic series but it's, it's, you know, a handful of
- 25:40people that we see in two locations, Joe didn't tunnel
- 25:44wasn't going for rocket, and a weird-looking agent.
- 25:50So, I was get the Prosthetics prophetic know, how do you say
- 25:54Chris Chris? Chris, the Prosthetics these
- 25:57tactics. Yeah, I'll get that.
- 25:58They're better. But I was thinking of her a bit
- 26:00like Alpha Centauri, this Looking aliens back in the
- 26:02middle of August, these people. Yeah, I absolutely love her.
- 26:08She's she's again. And again, she's one of those
- 26:11characters that Russell's created that she's you fall in
- 26:16love with her straight away. Like the professor, you fall in
- 26:19love with him, straight away. You fall in love with Linda with
- 26:22why straightaway fall in love with jab straight away.
- 26:26And then he just pulls them away from you.
- 26:28I know, I'm not sure what. You don't get time to mourn
- 26:34them, you know, it's just and I was like, that is probably
- 26:37something the show is missing after us.
- 26:39He Davis goes I say from off it right through to chibnall is, is
- 26:42they don't have that ability to instantly create a character
- 26:46that you really love. No, no, I know.
- 26:50He says, you know, the bit where because I think the bit where
- 26:52you really fall for her is where Martha convinces her to swear.
- 26:56Yeah, and he went back. Got tell you something, David
- 26:59Tennant, so it doesn't say Davidson.
- 27:01It says baby. I'm sorry, but the choke came
- 27:05first, and then offered the chamfer in afterwards and he
- 27:08went. And David Holloway, oh my God,
- 27:10it was so genius. He goes, I know, but I just
- 27:11wanted more for to teach others swear.
- 27:14It's such a lovely scene. Those it and that's it.
- 27:18It's just, it's just such a little, you know, the they don't
- 27:22get much screen time but in those few minutes that they do
- 27:26get the screen time, you see relationships being built.
- 27:30And you see that kind of The character building there and
- 27:34it's just there's not much of it.
- 27:36There's I'm also not much of, there's not much screen time,
- 27:39but you see the characters and you see the you know the
- 27:44building of the character you believe something.
- 27:46Are you do believe the relationship took place before
- 27:50this story. Yeah, you know.
- 27:52Yeah, not not, I don't always believe.
- 27:54Sometimes. I feel like carrots are
- 27:56specifically built for the Doctor Who story there in, you
- 27:58know, whereas Drink she goes, all know.
- 28:02I'm, I'm alright drinking my own, lactic fluid.
- 28:05Thank you very much. And it's all guys, yes.
- 28:07Well, like a real conversation though.
- 28:14You feel like she is, you know, I don't know how long.
- 28:18Did they say? How long she's been with the
- 28:20professor for? I'm not sure.
- 28:22I'm not sure if we don't want a long time, it feels like a long
- 28:25time. These days lost.
- 28:27She's a lot because I chose to die.
- 28:31Yeah. Even happened there.
- 28:33You know what? So for a little touches where
- 28:35their Jacobi goes up to Jack and goes the doctor.
- 28:38Yeah. He's like, no.
- 28:39It's me. Oh man.
- 28:44You know, Derek Jacobi is like an amazing actor but he abused
- 28:48so much warmth in Tiana and a sort of a weariness as well.
- 28:53Yeah. Yeah.
- 28:55I just want to have a whole series with these people.
- 28:58No, this is does without spoiling.
- 29:01It is, is, is it chunk? Chunk chunk, though, was it
- 29:04chunky? Is she in any of the big finish?
- 29:10No audios. Now, know.
- 29:11So they all set, I believe that's it after know they got
- 29:16this it before I can remember. It is with.
- 29:18There's a wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey thing, okay?
- 29:20Which makes it means a bit nice. She's not doing it, but he is,
- 29:24and it's fucking chilling. Hell, I'll tell you yeah, wow I
- 29:28like having an antihero in charge of my series you know?
- 29:31Oh yeah yeah I got not got it at how sleek and yeah apparently
- 29:39that before this every time they had the hand on it was special
- 29:42effects guys. Hands that they modeled really
- 29:45kind of went sauce my and it's that massive.
- 29:49Can you not do a sculpture of my hand?
- 29:51But he's so this is the first time it's a sculpture of his
- 29:54hand and he went I went through the whole rigmarole, put my hand
- 29:57in plaster of Paris, but it still looks bloody massive or
- 30:00screen anyway. Fantastic.
- 30:05But this is all Exposition and he's talking about.
- 30:07Yeah, Christmas invasion in this place.
- 30:12Why do we need to know about the hands?
- 30:16Is Jax. Got it always in the sound of
- 30:18drums, isn't it? Yeah, it is the hand.
- 30:22It reveals a hand. At the end of sound of drums, I
- 30:25think it does. It use it to a gym?
- 30:26I can't remember. Now is something there is a
- 30:28reason think, so it's been it's been a while since I've seen the
- 30:33finale the two-part finale. And that was a question,
- 30:35actually, that I was thought about really one is, is this, is
- 30:39this, a three part finale or is it?
- 30:42Yes. Yeah, it is, isn't it?
- 30:44I always watched it as a Recall. Yes.
- 30:47Yeah, you can't switch it off after this, although we'll have
- 30:49to. But I think you could absolutely
- 30:53watch Utopia. Yeah.
- 30:55And then watched on the drums and last of the time it was as a
- 30:58separate thing. Hmm.
- 31:00But you you can't watch. I think it's not eats more than
- 31:05just a prologue to it, isn't it? It's a it's a, it's a full, it's
- 31:10an episode 1 of 3. We say that a couple of times
- 31:13have a lathe. A yeah, do your doll.
- 31:15I see into essential as five men and toddlers children.
- 31:18Yeah. What was the one in series 9
- 31:21with the Trap streets face to face the Raven?
- 31:24Yeah, haven't said into hell. But yeah, and it's like this.
- 31:27The only chance we get to have that sort of six-part classic
- 31:31Who legs. Yeah.
- 31:32Yeah. It is.
- 31:33Yeah. But it does give you breath of
- 31:35Storytelling because this this is like in the far future.
- 31:38Then we have us then we have like a modern tale which is sort
- 31:43of like a spy Thriller type Yale.
- 31:46And then it's like, Eileen Invasion story.
- 31:50But, yeah, a lot it's a lot happen.
- 31:52It is. Yeah, it is.
- 31:55That is marvelous. Sorry.
- 32:00Okay, what's happening now, I've totally got.
- 32:02I'm so busy talk to you. I've stopped looking at the
- 32:04screen, he's talking about the, the signal that they discovered
- 32:10and talking about the Utopia project, the way he says, come
- 32:14to Utopia. Mmm.
- 32:16Oddly longing so dark, isn't it? Especially as he thinks he
- 32:20thinks he's doing it for the greater good.
- 32:24So Is it again? There's a whole load of furnaces
- 32:27that they're going to end up in believe.
- 32:28So, yeah, Rusty Davis, my put on that demeanor of being this
- 32:32dolly blow, it's dark as fuck in here is the next story wipes up,
- 32:3710% of the population because he is an end and even worse.
- 32:45When you see the takla Fain, it's not just a random guy or an
- 32:49adult that you saw in Utopia. It's the child, you know, oh no.
- 32:55Is that lovely? Child?
- 32:55That won the competition. Yeah, sorry.
- 32:59Little kids. This is what you're gonna turn
- 33:01into a very dark, isn't it? It is.
- 33:05It's like, I do. I love Chan, those little
- 33:08mandibles. Yeah, twitch on the side of her
- 33:12face. She's good though.
- 33:14I mean I love the makeup and I make up that Prosthetics.
- 33:18It's really, it's very memorable with it.
- 33:21They did. Do those are sort of a lot of
- 33:23comic looking monster. This in the rusty David.
- 33:26Yeah. But you don't forget them.
- 33:28No no no you don't I was never keen on the with the Green
- 33:34Cactus people. Oh yeah I'll come up with a cold
- 33:38now. Yeah the VIN been fought she
- 33:41thought she? Yeah I mean I love.
- 33:44I love banner bannakaffalatta. I loved him.
- 33:47Oh and the red fly. Do you know what?
- 33:50It's you. Oh, you know that Feller.
- 33:51That Marquesas played in the waiver wedding of river song?
- 33:53I can barely remember what you Looks like what I said to you
- 33:56the moxx of balhoon. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:59Which was used before you be like, yeah, that funny little
- 34:02fella, but they do it in the chair with the enormous hit, or
- 34:06the Slovenian asked. Do you not think as well, the
- 34:10Tenon and Jacoby, have fantastic chemistry.
- 34:14Yeah, absolutely. They do.
- 34:16And I was thinking about it the other day when I was re watching
- 34:18this, I thought I would love to have seen him, kind of as much
- 34:22as I like John simm. I would love to have seen It
- 34:25continued with Jacoby, you hear all the time, you know about
- 34:30song sound to you for like you quite like it faster.
- 34:34I like I like him in the sound of drums and I do like him in
- 34:41last of the time. Lord, I'm not keen on him in the
- 34:44end of time. I think he's slightly over the
- 34:48top with all these thing and it's always fucking laughing his
- 34:52head off. Yeah.
- 34:54But I absolutely adored him in Capaldi's finale season, 10
- 35:00finale, I think, I believe he had the nerve to suggest that
- 35:03Missy and John Sims master. Fucking.
- 35:06I mean I was like are we really going there and knew who I know
- 35:11we brought a lot of sex but honest to God.
- 35:14Next thing, you know, we're gonna have all the doctors
- 35:15coming together in a group session.
- 35:20Wants to see that grief. Oh well, so this seems vital,
- 35:25isn't it where she talks to a little kid because she one that
- 35:28opens up the ball and he says, he has filled with diamond this.
- 35:32Yeah. So I'd love to play this
- 35:36character at this woman with the teeth.
- 35:38Yeah yeah she's got to do is walk ons on the set and look at
- 35:41the camera go even I could do that.
- 35:47She's fantastic. So the suggestion here is
- 35:50obviously this is the master so that Ian has gone the Masters
- 35:53intellect and he's created this fantastic engine out of lewd of
- 35:58paper clips and yeah like he's on the set of blue Peter.
- 36:01Yes. And does look a bit rickety
- 36:04actually don't he? Yeah, it does.
- 36:07He starts feeling very classic. Who doesn't it?
- 36:09Oh, yeah. I mean, it's kind of a bit based
- 36:13on The Siege a little bit, especially with the likes of the
- 36:19form of the small sets. It does kind of feel like it
- 36:24could be a, the trout and story. I like, I like stories that are
- 36:31in enclosed sets. I like midnight before he can't
- 36:36fault midnight. Can you do not at all know?
- 36:39Is that another one of my favorites?
- 36:41And a lot of them are in this era of Allah bless, you can't be
- 36:44that disappointed in season 5 then of the classic series if
- 36:47you like a based on the seat story.
- 36:49Oh I love, I love season 5 and we can see the majority of it
- 36:52now which is fantastic. If you don't dislike doing this
- 36:57too much I'll have to get you back to be one of those.
- 36:59I've already touched it. Yeah.
- 37:00Twice. But I think I think season 5.
- 37:03And works better when you dip in to the stories rather than
- 37:07watching a marathon. Very repetitive isn't it?
- 37:09What you want to share? What after another?
- 37:11I actually found that when I when I did, when I did my last
- 37:14marathon few years ago, now watching everything in order, it
- 37:19got to some point around the the trout and run.
- 37:22Probably in season 5, getting towards season 6 where I was
- 37:27like ready for this to. I'm ready for Pertwee now and
- 37:31that's awful because I think the story Is absolutely fantastic.
- 37:35I think there. But I think it works better when
- 37:38you, you know, dip in and out of them.
- 37:41And mix them up with all the doctors stories because they do
- 37:43get a bit samey. I think Doctor Who runs to a
- 37:47formula for a lot of his classic run, depending the producer
- 37:51that's in all the creative team that I'm making that particular.
- 37:54So you don't, you know, kind of what you're going to get with
- 37:56English live. Don't you?
- 37:57You either know what you're gonna get with paralyzing Terror
- 37:59sticks. It's why people have a bit of
- 38:01trouble with 15. I I think because it and you go
- 38:04from a horror of fang Rock to Invisible enemy.
- 38:06To gives you the fender, I'll to the some makers and you're
- 38:09totally, it's like, yeah. Yeah yeah, yeah.
- 38:14Between comedy and horror every five.
- 38:16Yeah which is I think is what the new series does better.
- 38:21I think that bounces from one thing to another.
- 38:24It's never, it's never the series.
- 38:27Now is never say me. I don't think I don't think.
- 38:30I think every story is different.
- 38:32The eye These did our diversity. I think really well as well like
- 38:37different kinds of stories, but unfortunately, the quality was
- 38:40very diverse from Storage story as well, so you never quite know
- 38:43if you're gonna get Delta a classic.
- 38:45Yeah, very offer back-to-back. Yeah.
- 38:49Did you see that bit there? Where they're talking over?
- 38:51This is the wonderful bit when she sees me, rather swear, but
- 38:55but where she said, oh, you were great.
- 38:57You fancy the professor, don't you?
- 38:59And they've got a shared thing, they're going to see ya.
- 39:03Nice. I know.
- 39:04And I just want to see more of I want.
- 39:07I want to see more of their relationship.
- 39:10Do you recognize her in turn left?
- 39:13Yes, he has. Yunge, yeah, she's in the market
- 39:15place. Isn't she would do?
- 39:18And she's big sadhana. That's all right.
- 39:20Yeah. So the episode.
- 39:21Yeah, yes, you are. Fascinating.
- 39:34But at the end of this, you know, she took off all those
- 39:37Prosthetics and things, and she went up to David Tennant, and
- 39:39she went David. Hi, Ru.
- 39:49So this guy who goes into the chamber, he he burns up inside
- 39:54his suit. Doesn't he recently as he turns
- 39:57into sort of? Yeah, but why doesn't?
- 40:00I Know Jack can't die. But when Jack does it later on,
- 40:03why doesn't he? I don't see him burning up.
- 40:06I know. Well, logistically we can't see
- 40:09him burn into a pile of ashes and then come back together or
- 40:13anything. But why doesn't that happen so
- 40:16fast? Really good question, live.
- 40:17Rather? Hoping I think, Rusty, David is
- 40:19hoping you're not thinking about ha ha ha.
- 40:22I'm just enjoying the great activist.
- 40:25John Barrowman, I think, yeah, critically distracted.
- 40:31He thinks for his scripts far more than people give him credit
- 40:34for Yeah it does. Yeah yeah.
- 40:36But yeah that one did rather sleep here boy.
- 40:38Mmm. You see that incredible shot of
- 40:40light but enormous rocket engine you know.
- 40:43The yeah above it. Mmm.
- 40:45Yeah. I never noticed that before
- 40:49until until the other night, when I watched it, I didn't
- 40:52notice that the rocket engines before.
- 40:54See, I never know it until just then.
- 40:56So, this is a revelation to me, is one thing about those who is
- 41:02it? I think it's one of the reasons
- 41:03why we go back apartment being Comfort.
- 41:05Watching, is you Duty different things?
- 41:08Oh, absolutely, I can listen to this.
- 41:10It's just a Thrill Ride, isn't it?
- 41:11You're like you're loving them. The reference isn't the master
- 41:14and the energy. Yeah.
- 41:15Yeah. I think you miss a lot of what
- 41:18else is going on in the background because you're so,
- 41:20you're so caught with with that actual energy and the scene
- 41:24that's playing out in front of you that you miss, all the
- 41:26little things in the background like they've attended with say,
- 41:29you know, all the families that you see, sort of in the corridor
- 41:32like, Yay, props Department made it.
- 41:35So each family area was distinctive with with like
- 41:39details that were unique to that family and he goes.
- 41:42All right guys, you got the cameras, go so fast down there.
- 41:45You don't notice any of it. They were still they were
- 41:48putting in. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, first.
- 41:53This is what radiation does to your kids.
- 41:55Yeah. Oh, did you say that?
- 41:57They're now, she just for a way that's parking wire.
- 42:01Hmm. He's showing that those, those
- 42:03come loose and they spark up and that's important later on
- 42:07important later on. Yeah, mmm.
- 42:11My seeing frame regimen and John Barrowman getting off there.
- 42:15What's going on? It's it's his line.
- 42:17When he wakes up when he comes back to life with somebody
- 42:21kissing me. I don't know what, you know,
- 42:23what Sage so badly, though. Obviously in the in the wake of
- 42:26Revelations about John Burroughs behavior is a his character then
- 42:30flirts with every single person in every single story and your
- 42:33guy. Oh no, you know, every time yeah
- 42:36it's a little bit. Yeah.
- 42:39But it was so refreshing at the time, especially that it was for
- 42:42men and women, you know. Yeah.
- 42:46Absolutely loved Jack. Absolutely.
- 42:50Oh my god. Did you realize it doesn't
- 42:53affect your clothes? Why are you taking it off or
- 42:55what? Speaking when I say I think this
- 43:07is one of the best acted scenes in this season between the two
- 43:11of them and is because David Tennant's allowed to be
- 43:13completely understated. Yeah.
- 43:15A bit. So frightening and flirty as
- 43:19well. Yeah, II do love, I do love it.
- 43:23When tenant goes a little bit darker, a little bit darker, but
- 43:28a bit quieter. But yeah, I tenant is not my
- 43:33new. He's not, he's not my favorite
- 43:35new series doctor. I absolutely love him.
- 43:38Yes, right now is the poly offer you the same as me, is there?
- 43:42No, we got our punch up. No.
- 43:45I mean I do like math. I do to really it's just my
- 43:49least favorite. That's all.
- 43:51Yeah, yeah he's yeah but I think yeah, Capaldi there was
- 43:56something about him. I don't know if it was because I
- 43:57was excited that we finally got an older doctor again and but
- 44:02he's just there's something different about Capaldi.
- 44:05Probably couldn't strided through the Classic Series
- 44:08without changing a thing. Oh, absolutely.
- 44:11Yeah, absolutely. But 10 and I love it when When
- 44:15he gets a little bit little bit darker.
- 44:19I love his character in Broadchurch.
- 44:22I don't know if he'd ever seen your team broadcasters for
- 44:25fantastic turn. Yeah, basically yeah.
- 44:30Yeah, yeah, yeah. And of course, I can see, I can
- 44:37see why he is kind of the public fell in love with him, you know,
- 44:41and that's great. And that's what each that's what
- 44:43should have happened. And that's, that's what did.
- 44:45Happen. But I still would have loved to
- 44:48have seen a more of that lie, more, bitter, not, bitter.
- 44:52That's not the right word, is it?
- 44:53But as slightly. Yeah a quieter.
- 44:56It's what makes episodes like. Midnight so amazing when he's
- 44:59out of control. Oh yeah.
- 45:00Loses control of the crap and and even like Wars of Mars the
- 45:05end we're like he's so fucking arrogant.
- 45:08He's bought into his own myth and think that things are off
- 45:11and I can do what I like and I yeah, yeah.
- 45:16I mean I mean that was a point where like now you got to go now
- 45:18are you and David Tennant. You have bought into your own
- 45:21myth here so I could do anything.
- 45:27I can't you see that jacobi's. Got a tear going down his face
- 45:30there when he's looking at the Tardis.
- 45:33Yeah I just got here was the first time we've all this
- 45:36playing out and then this is really isn't it where it really
- 45:40starts to build your kind of he's listening in the background
- 45:46to them and you're getting all the kind of the exposition of
- 45:50what happened and the bitter killed me was when Roger Delgado
- 45:54comes in going and you will surrender your power to me.
- 45:58Yeah, I know who he is because we didn't we didn't get kind of
- 46:05flashbacks to and it's done. It's a sound clip but we didn't
- 46:08get flashbacks to the classic series really at this point so
- 46:13to hear Roger dog. It's time.
- 46:15Jesus Christ every five minutes, a flashback to stomach.
- 46:20No, I mean I won't pretend I didn't love it every time, but
- 46:24it was a lot. It was a yeah, and II.
- 46:27Sorry, good. I was just gonna say, I hear,
- 46:30they wanted to have a clip of Eric Roberts, but Fox wouldn't
- 46:34allow them to to do it and he does find you and I always
- 46:39dress, okay. I don't know.
- 46:52This is an ambulance. Wow, you know, it was it was.
- 47:10Yeah, I was 14 when that came out and I was The only Doctor
- 47:15Who fan in the school and I ran around the school, telling
- 47:19people how awesome it was and how fantastic it was and nobody
- 47:24was interested. I got Daphne Ashbrook to do one
- 47:32of those Cameo things for him. Oh wow, she's amazing.
- 47:36She's they're going. Hi Mark, you know, I love the TV
- 47:39movie. It all came together was
- 47:41amazing. I wish it had gone to Syria.
- 47:44Wonderful. Wow, sorry.
- 47:46Okay, we go t, take it away from Derek Jacobi.
- 47:48Lakhtin talking about Daphne Ashbrook doing a Costco and and
- 47:52what I love about this is it's kind of like Martha's sort of
- 47:56excitement at seeing that and how she seems kind of excited to
- 48:02tell the doctor that. Oh my god.
- 48:04There might be another one of your people here.
- 48:06Yeah. But he's like yeah but who could
- 48:10who? I know what I saw but we've had
- 48:12enough of a two and a half. Seasons.
- 48:14Now all of your the last of your kind without a hint of you're
- 48:18not alone, it's the perfect time to hit with this now.
- 48:21Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:22It is. Yeah.
- 48:23And who else was it going to be? Who the hell else is it gonna
- 48:25be? You know, what else he doesn't.
- 48:27So sneaky is he gives another reason or human nature deserve
- 48:31to exist, just because it's incredible.
- 48:33Yeah, but obviously it also exists to make this twist.
- 48:37Lance. Yeah.
- 48:39Yeah. And look at what we've got from
- 48:42this, as well, from from Human Nature.
- 48:44We've got this, and then we've got, we've got the Roof Doctor,
- 48:51did you do an episode when I won't say that?
- 48:53Yeah, okay. Just say a lot of Christian, or
- 48:54does cherry-pick the best of this theorem because he does,
- 48:57but yet he always pulls it off. Well, I do think he absolutely
- 49:01does. It does it in the right way.
- 49:03He's a much underrated. I feel, I don't know where you
- 49:06language. No, but I feel like he is
- 49:08underrated. I'm, I'm a big fan.
- 49:11Of his era, I can see its faults but but I'm the sort of person
- 49:16who sees the, I try to see the good in every, in every episode.
- 49:23So I try to, you can come back on this thing anytime you like.
- 49:28Yeah, I love it. And you know, GM the chip
- 49:32malaria is been there through a lot of a lot of very different
- 49:37parts of my life. So I'm quite Quite I'm not
- 49:42looking forward to the Jim Lehrer ending to be fair.
- 49:45I've really enjoyed it and flux just topped it off for me.
- 49:49I absolutely adored flux sorry.i.
- 49:53It was just the best thing in the world and Maybe I'm in the
- 49:57minority but I say I had all the time.
- 50:00These children as well. Oh my good gravy.
- 50:03Honestly, I pray Sir. Gregory's going to buy you out
- 50:05for a point. There's a lot of.
- 50:10There's a few things I don't, but yes.
- 50:12Yeah. Oh yeah.
- 50:13Absolutely so. But I will definitely say the
- 50:16big hitting moments of Chip nal's.
- 50:18Time are generally redone expertly well moments from yes
- 50:24this time. Yeah, absolutely.
- 50:26And why not? He's looking back to what works
- 50:28and God you know I worked I'm going to do it and I'll do it
- 50:31even better. I can.
- 50:33Oh my God, here we go. Oh god.
- 50:35Oh oh no. Watch is about to open.
- 50:38Look at his look, his face there.
- 50:42It's just You think she's always been the watching that last
- 50:46episode? What Jody?
- 50:50Mmm. Yeah.
- 50:51I think it will be a rather dangling plot point if she
- 50:55doesn't. Yeah.
- 50:56Because I don't, I don't think Russell's going to pick up any
- 50:59of the threads. Now imagine where I'm not even
- 51:02the time these children or any of it that you know, I don't
- 51:06think I don't think you pick up any of it, the direction here.
- 51:11The music. And, you know, it takes an actor
- 51:14of some skill to go from being very good.
- 51:19The very evil just with the eyes.
- 51:21I think I'm getting it, I'm getting children watching it
- 51:23now. Oh yeah, there's something I
- 51:26suppose. So you are not alone and the
- 51:29rockets going up. It is all happening at once, you
- 51:32know. Yeah.
- 51:33It's like he's Paces episodes so.
- 51:35Well, is that would excite was going to hit you in one moment
- 51:38and here we go. The turn to the camera.
- 51:42I mean, this is Iconic, isn't it?
- 51:44This Look at his eyes. He's gonna he's gone on the
- 51:49professor is just dumb. Yeah.
- 51:51And you know how he plays the be in a minute I think is one of
- 51:54the most of adult performance is when he's going.
- 51:57But process. Yeah, and then he has that line.
- 52:01Oh, now I can say I was provoked, he's essentially
- 52:05saying always going to kill you anyway but now I can say I had a
- 52:09reason that is so scary. It's cruel, isn't it?
- 52:12It's horrible and she's so nice. I know.
- 52:16And what Graeme Harper does that, I think is absolutely
- 52:19genius is, he's got her holding the gun and that strobe light
- 52:22going off in her face. So you just see flickers of her
- 52:25fear? Yeah.
- 52:26Yeah. Actually sort of try to go into
- 52:28the shadows and you kiss, keep seeing house for how great she
- 52:31is as he comes to. Also, with eyes, rific,
- 52:34desperation as well. In, you know, the person that
- 52:38she's fallen in love with his gone.
- 52:40Totally gone. Yeah.
- 52:41Terrible man Rusty Davis. All right.
- 52:45Killing off the favor. Well, honestly, Linda with a
- 52:49y-yeah chamfer, but but, but it happens with the with Joan as
- 52:55well. Doesn't it in Family Blood?
- 52:58She loses him. I'm going to absolutely riveted
- 53:03watching this. Now I'll plus they're doing a
- 53:05ton of running down corridors, so I'm getting absolute.
- 53:08Peter Davison Vibes here. Yeah, I think this is this and
- 53:15The Impossible Planet of maybe silence in the library.
- 53:20They're the three that feel most like, classic Doctor Who to me?
- 53:23Yes, the first various reasons. Yeah, I agree.
- 53:27I agree. But this is like classic Doctor
- 53:29Who, With new series energy. Yeah.
- 53:33And this, this is what else? He's so cruel to her, you with
- 53:36your chance and you those, it's like you you can't just kill
- 53:40her. You need to put it down as well.
- 53:43You know, he goes what's in? The professor was an invention
- 53:46so perfect that. Yeah, I even forgot that, you
- 53:51know, I did it to myself asked. Great.
- 53:54Oh god. Oh, you know this bit here we
- 53:56goes. The master.
- 54:00Yeah. Well, he said, you know,
- 54:01Russians knows, he shouldn't really said that, then really
- 54:04the first time you should hear that.
- 54:05He's the master is when David Tennant, says it in one of the
- 54:09scenes and he goes. But then, I realized that David
- 54:13Garrett. Jacoby would never get to say.
- 54:14I am the mom and I had an argument with Julie Gardner
- 54:18who's going? No David Tennant's call.
- 54:19So. Yeah, and he's going.
- 54:20No, the Fanboy rules that's gonna say it.
- 54:24And so it was a good ol, Russell, that shot.
- 54:28Through the glass. I think that's one of his
- 54:32signature shots. Graeme Harper is that he goes
- 54:34glass or a square ones in every one of his episodes.
- 54:39Yeah. Tell you what, the others were,
- 54:40but I have heard that. Yeah, there's just so much
- 54:44energy. Here is a and then we've had
- 54:46that whole transformation from him to the master, and then
- 54:49that's beaten by this fucking chilling regeneration in the
- 54:54tar, The Scream. And he's kind of like smiling
- 54:59isn't it as well as the energy is coming out, you can't.
- 55:04I love the fact that he locks the door by just Russell T.
- 55:10Davies had a bitter laugh, their heads off Kylie.
- 55:12Can you believe that's how we started getting rusty?
- 55:16And again, I can't believe we got away with it.
- 55:19He's just such a doctor who thing though isn't it?
- 55:24But also like we haven't really mentioned motion from Ari Gold.
- 55:27We're the beginning, but he's music in the last 10 minutes.
- 55:30Oh yeah. Is that kind of, I'm not going
- 55:33to do it. But that kind of Do do, do, do,
- 55:37do do yeah, that's really great. Say, I'm glad to know we're on
- 55:48the same page. Here we go and then the no music
- 55:53now, sort of going do no, no, no, don't don't sorry.
- 55:59I'm getting very excited. It's a B & Isles.
- 56:09Look at that, I energy and it is it's if you notice it's darker,
- 56:13the wind Eccleston turned into. Yeah.
- 56:18That was all sort of, you know, Angelica like yeah, yeah.
- 56:22What about the windows is hardest Windows.
- 56:24Yeah. And it's the, it's the eyes.
- 56:27John Sims eyes as well. The continue know, the kind of
- 56:30did regeneration energy in his eyes as well.
- 56:34I've heard very cruel, people say that Jonathan gives his best
- 56:37performance in this last second and then after that, it's all
- 56:39downhill from there, I don't agree with that.
- 56:41Don't get me wrong. No, no.
- 56:43You know what? I worked in a nursery one's
- 56:45right for about a year and as you can imagine the kids adored
- 56:48me but there was this one kid there, I thought was absolutely.
- 56:52Psychotic was all manic energy and practical jokes and quite
- 56:58violent. I swear to God that's who John
- 57:01simm based his master on because he Yeah, little kids.
- 57:06Yeah, and he's completely different now.
- 57:10You see what I liked about this is that for a long time, I'd
- 57:19only seen what Delgado inanely and Eric Roberts, and I'd always
- 57:26imagined the master should be a, you know, a dark-haired bearded
- 57:30man. And it wasn't until I saw
- 57:33Jacoby. And then John Sim that doesn't
- 57:35have to be that you know. It's he's a Time Lord like the
- 57:39doctor we can look and you can be any way that they want him to
- 57:43be so, you know, really since since this, we've had so many
- 57:49different kind of versions of the master.
- 57:53Do you not think though in new series they do such a good job
- 57:57of paralleling sort of the master and the doctor as idea
- 58:01for or doing the polar opposite is always such a Herring.
- 58:05Yeah, save him. And Tenon.
- 58:08Hang on. Let me get her.
- 58:09Gomez and Capaldi. Yeah.
- 58:11Lambda 1 and Jodie Whittaker. Yeah.
- 58:13Yeah. I just Fizzles it Fizzles every
- 58:16day at a time. Oh, it ended.
- 58:18It's finished. Yeah.
- 58:19What happened there at the end? They were stuck trying to hold
- 58:24the door closed, the future. Can we trying to get it?
- 58:28And regardless of gum Julie Gardner was piss at the end when
- 58:31she read the script. And she said, look, I need to
- 58:34know how did I get out of it and cross it over?
- 58:38That's all we do. We just snapped, Jack sport X
- 58:40manipulator enough, they win when she went.
- 58:43Are you really gonna go with that?
- 58:45If I don't like yeah, we don't want to waste time.
- 58:49Trying to resolve Cliffhanger do.
- 58:52The better, the better Cliffhangers are the ones that
- 58:54you kind of, you put in that Jeopardy and then it's resolved,
- 58:59I think because you just don't want to be stuck hanging around
- 59:04trying to solve something when you need to get on with the rest
- 59:06of the story. But the next story, rather, I'm
- 59:09going to steal observation from my good friend.
- 59:12Nathan bought me from fly for entirety, but the genius of this
- 59:16Cliff Hanger, is that John simm. Now transports back to the End
- 59:21of Series 2, and is present throughout the whole series
- 59:25free. But we've already watched
- 59:27manipulating all the events I think is just Jean.
- 59:31Yeah, you know, yeah, it's out muff.
- 59:34It muff it before Moffat came along, you know.
- 59:38It's wonderful. How do you know like him?
- 59:41Yeah, we said there's the, the sort of three parts.
- 59:43So, we're face the Raven into. Oh, good grief, Heaven saying.
- 59:48Yeah, and Okay grace. Help me out here squab.
- 59:53Oh, dear Dottie into as well. I think they are all very good.
- 1:00:01Sort of third from the End episodes.
- 1:00:03Well, I don't think they're as excited as this tide over your
- 1:00:06desperate to see them. No, no, no, no.
- 1:00:09No, you're not. No.
- 1:00:10Absolutely. You know, do you think It'll
- 1:00:16probably know the answer. But do you think the master
- 1:00:21reveal was done better in this or in spy for part one?
- 1:00:27Because I had no internal things spider one.
- 1:00:30You'd have asked me last week are the said, spy fall.
- 1:00:33Hmm. Revisiting it.
- 1:00:34This week. It's so good.
- 1:00:36Yeah, it's a hard call. I'd probably say this by like a
- 1:00:40mm. Yeah.
- 1:00:42Because I think that Cliffhanger is wife always Sublime.
- 1:00:45Yeah, absolutely. I had no idea again.
- 1:00:50I think I had an inkling that the master was going to be in
- 1:00:52this, so it's so it but the execution of it's probably
- 1:00:59better in this episode than in spiteful because I thought it
- 1:01:02was more of a surprise for me. Yeah, for me, I chili you jumped
- 1:01:06out of my seat and punch the air when the reveal came in
- 1:01:09spiteful, because Dhawan was so convincing, yeah.
- 1:01:13Oh yeah, yeah. Oh, man.
- 1:01:15This guy's lovely Ann. He's so hot.
- 1:01:18I hope he goes, he's gonna go with him and I know that.
- 1:01:20Yeah, I want to get rid of that free, and I've got a bit of an
- 1:01:29unfair question for you, okay? Before we go into our reasons,
- 1:01:33as to why to give it a million reasons to recommend this.
- 1:01:36But do you imagine that Johnson's Master will do a
- 1:01:40better job in government than list Truss?
- 1:01:49Well, judging by what's happening at the moment?
- 1:01:52Yes. Well, do ya, I mean, have you
- 1:01:55say, you know she's got into key positions if she if he just did
- 1:01:59that and gas them all like he doesn't sound of drums that big
- 1:02:01a star. Wouldn't it application for the
- 1:02:06death penalty of the current UK government as a bit extreme?
- 1:02:09But sorry, I was being such a gracious.
- 1:02:15It's okay. Come on, m, 3 reasons as a male
- 1:02:18say, is what he did extremely well in that commentary.
- 1:02:21What were you worried about? Nothing, obviously Doctor, Who
- 1:02:27is easiest thing in the world, okay, three reasons.
- 1:02:32One apiece. You then me.
- 1:02:35Let's go. Well, I'm going to have to go
- 1:02:38with Derek Jacobi. Damn you.
- 1:02:44He's He doesn't, you know, he makes absolutely wonderful,
- 1:02:49Professor Yana, and then totally turns and becomes absolutely
- 1:02:55fantastic Master. For however, many minutes we saw
- 1:02:58him, he makes the character in zone, both characters and the
- 1:03:04fact that you can play two characters in one story is
- 1:03:08absolutely amazing. I don't fact that he's that
- 1:03:11memorable with that little screen time as the master.
- 1:03:14Yeah, yeah. Yeah, artists are fast a couple
- 1:03:16of those Anthony ainley stories. You don't have a bit more Derek
- 1:03:19Jacobi. Absolutely.
- 1:03:20Absolutely. Okay, well, I'm going to say all
- 1:03:25the classic series elements that are in play with us and I know,
- 1:03:28Rusty Davis was wincing a little bit as he was writing it,
- 1:03:31because he knew it was leaning a bit too much into the classic
- 1:03:34series. The Quarry, the end of humanity,
- 1:03:36like the high Concept in, you know, in three rooms with a tiny
- 1:03:41cast. I am a huge fan of classic.
- 1:03:45Who? So when the new series leads
- 1:03:47into that, I am beguiled. Yeah.
- 1:03:50Absolutely. I think I will go for probably
- 1:03:55the return of Jack because it's something that we wanted we've
- 1:04:02been waiting for or I'd been waiting for since the end of See
- 1:04:05It Cece was one and and it was built up a little bit in
- 1:04:10Torchwood and just getting him back there.
- 1:04:15And taking him out of that, kind of really kind of gloomy series,
- 1:04:23one of Torchwood and putting him back into Doctor Who where the
- 1:04:29character clearly suit. It suits got to better the
- 1:04:33character because he's fun and Torchwood.
- 1:04:35Wasn't always fun in persons, at least I love children of Earth
- 1:04:40but that India where they made him kill his nephew.
- 1:04:42Yeah. What about Little bit too.
- 1:04:46Dark Valium, I'm album one dog. That is dark.
- 1:04:49As you know about an issues annoy me but yeah hook them up
- 1:04:54and murdered him just like well maybe save the old toy.
- 1:04:57They don't listen to this but does nice.
- 1:05:00Doesn't he slopped brilliantly with the tenant and a German as
- 1:05:03well. Parent was he does and I wish we
- 1:05:07could have seen a little bit more of that because we don't
- 1:05:10and we see them go into the next two episodes and I absolutely
- 1:05:15Lutely, love the sound of drums, where it's the three of them and
- 1:05:18then they're walking the streets.
- 1:05:20And they kind of just trying to hide hide out.
- 1:05:24I love that exciting players kept playing this.
- 1:05:29You know, they're currently in my office flat right now and the
- 1:05:31sound of drums that bombs about to go off, they're about to go
- 1:05:36wheel on stage already and that will do it for a bit, you know,
- 1:05:39since they're saying, yeah, I would have, I would have loved
- 1:05:43to have seen Some. Some episodes standard episodes
- 1:05:49with, with that team, I would have loved to have seen that.
- 1:05:52I think really want. Okay, well, I'm gonna go next
- 1:05:561000, of course, are very are bang on about the direction,
- 1:05:59quite a lot. In this diagram Harper is the
- 1:06:03best. I don't think he's one of the
- 1:06:04best. I think he's the best for his to
- 1:06:07from classic and the ones he did in new series.
- 1:06:11I just don't think there's anyone fire in terms of like,
- 1:06:15kinetic energy, And momentum and for making member like those
- 1:06:20seems like rose hanging onto the lever.
- 1:06:23At the end of dudes day. Yeah, I know the doctors fake
- 1:06:27regeneration in the stolen Earth.
- 1:06:29Mmm, are those disgusting zombies puking out water in?
- 1:06:35I mean, you just remember it's episodes to do.
- 1:06:38Yeah. And I would love to have seen
- 1:06:40him do more in the new series as well.
- 1:06:43Like, you know, now episodes now, Maybe some of them off
- 1:06:48episodes, but did you not hear? I think that grandmother said
- 1:06:56there was somebody he wouldn't work with in and I thought why
- 1:07:00stop making them wear them off enjoying?
- 1:07:03I don't know if that's the case. I think it's a strange time to
- 1:07:06lose the best director the show. Yeah I just made that up, you
- 1:07:11know, my schedule a big gossip, you know.
- 1:07:16A lot of bullshit. Okay, what is that?
- 1:07:20We don't reach was up to. No, I don't think.
- 1:07:22I've got one more, we both got one more, I will have to say the
- 1:07:26music because I've not I'm not going back on myself because I
- 1:07:34love more Eagles music. However, it's not.
- 1:07:38It doesn't always, it doesn't always land for me.
- 1:07:41The music. I think sometimes it's a little
- 1:07:44bit too bombastic in scenes with doesn't need to be bombastic.
- 1:07:49However, it works in this episode, it works what it works
- 1:07:54with the acting, it works with the visuals that works with the
- 1:07:56direction, I think it's absolutely spot-on in this
- 1:07:59episode. I know we spoke.
- 1:08:02For about music telling you how to feel but this really does
- 1:08:09work without was no, I'm saying. I don't know what I think I can.
- 1:08:14Oh look an in-service 12. I think he really upped his game
- 1:08:17and in episodes like spy for money.
- 1:08:20Added energy with his music. It is eleven.
- 1:08:23It was all that the ambient and a big wire and I was like, whoa,
- 1:08:26whistle the pace got in this show, what's going on?
- 1:08:29Yeah, I think gold was probably at his worse, when he was Doing
- 1:08:32comedy music. It's like yeah, remember kids,
- 1:08:35You Gotta Laugh at this point and when that's Nick walked into
- 1:08:37a tree and it goes, don't you know.
- 1:08:40Yeah, yeah exactly but but in this story it just works, it
- 1:08:44works. Okay?
- 1:08:46Then my third one is going to be.
- 1:08:51Oh my God. I'm stumped.
- 1:08:53Hang on. Got that out of this has ever
- 1:08:55happened before. Looking at your pretty face.
- 1:08:58I got me think. Let me think, let me think.
- 1:09:03Let me think you said, Derek Jacobi?
- 1:09:05I'm you. Oh my God.
- 1:09:07I mean, how could I forget that? Gorgeous chantho.
- 1:09:11Yeah. Who is like a One-Shot alien
- 1:09:14character? I absolutely brilliant.
- 1:09:16Played to Perfection funny, charming and murdered in the
- 1:09:21most obscene manner possible. She's a great characteristic
- 1:09:29exemplifies Brasi Davis's. Enormous talent in capturing
- 1:09:34like a vivid character economically so quickly.
- 1:09:38Yeah, it's just a stick. Well, Jim, that was your first
- 1:09:44commentary. How'd it go?
- 1:09:46I really enjoyed it. We have.
- 1:09:48Absolutely and wanting to do one for a while, but I never had the
- 1:09:55kind of the guts to say. Yeah, let me do one.
- 1:10:00So I'm glad you asked me. Okay, so I come one, come on
- 1:10:03this podcast, you know, but I think that should be the great,
- 1:10:06you know, like everyone, everyone's got an opinion.
- 1:10:08Everyone should have a sight that met our site often.
- 1:10:11You got a fabulous for you. Should be a DJ.
- 1:10:13You know, it's reckon that's true.
- 1:10:15I'll do. But, can I ask you where we're
- 1:10:19going next? Because this has already been
- 1:10:20determined. Yes, we are going to watch a
- 1:10:25Jody episode. We are going to watch.
- 1:10:30Can you hear me? Joe, I'm surprised you Joker's.
- 1:10:33I free Rosary at you Punjab. Revolution of the Daleks and you
- 1:10:38chose. Can you hear me?
- 1:10:39Absolutely. A spoiler for the next
- 1:10:42recording. Can you please tell me why?
- 1:10:46Well, to be fair, I what I did I was going to pick your teacher.
- 1:10:50Would it take you away to start with?
- 1:10:53But then can you hear me? Because it's, it's a story that
- 1:11:00when I watched it. It kind of affected me quite
- 1:11:05deep, man, I didn't affect me deeply but it was a lot of
- 1:11:08things in it and elements and it resonated with me, you know,
- 1:11:12talking about mental health issues and things like that.
- 1:11:16And I've been through a little bit of that.
- 1:11:19So I felt it was the right one to do out of out of that you and
- 1:11:27me might be kindred spirits in that respect speaking of
- 1:11:30somebody who's back. With mental health, black ones
- 1:11:33on life that I thought that was a really mature take on within
- 1:11:39the Doctor Who for Matt. Yeah, and yeah.
- 1:11:42Bit of the end. Everyone seems to criticize.
- 1:11:44Well, yeah. Graham talks to the doctor.
- 1:11:47Hmm. I think that is beautifully
- 1:11:50judged, I dad maybe you might, you might just kick it.
- 1:11:53I think it's all kind of subjective on people's own
- 1:11:56experiences. But what I've experienced that
- 1:11:58when I've tried to talk to people about, yeah, mental
- 1:12:00health issues, and things like that.
- 1:12:01Absolutely. And I'm the sort of person who I
- 1:12:08often struggle to talk about my feelings, not so much.
- 1:12:13Now I'm a little bit better now but you know I've always been,
- 1:12:16you know somebody if somebody if somebody's came to speak to me
- 1:12:19and they you know, they said that they would be there.
- 1:12:23Something a died or that they have no illness or something.
- 1:12:26I don't know. I mean, just recently A friend
- 1:12:30of mine is told me that they've got cancer and I don't know how
- 1:12:35to react to that. How are you supposed to do?
- 1:12:41Yeah. What can you what can you do for
- 1:12:43your the latitude of care? Yeah, but you possibly absorb
- 1:12:46that and then yeah bring that is the solution to that.
- 1:12:50Yeah, yes it's for me, it was just a bit.
- 1:12:53It was a bit like okay, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:09But as well is one of those episodes where they absolutely
- 1:13:13use all the regulars. Poignantly.
- 1:13:16Yes and it has that wonderful sequence That animated sequence.
- 1:13:21Yes. In that incredible as well.
- 1:13:23That was amazing. I first saw that plus, you know,
- 1:13:26I'm gonna ask you one more question before we go.
- 1:13:28Make sure your blood, but why on Earth would you do if you fell
- 1:13:32asleep at night and you woke up and in the Moonlight, coming for
- 1:13:35your window, is that I'll get started with his fingers hanging
- 1:13:39off his hands. Fucking chilling.
- 1:13:44Isn't it terrifying? I couldn't believe that was,
- 1:13:47that was on 7:00 on on a Sunday evening at 7:00, my little
- 1:13:52guinea pigs, watch. Sure, that, you know, Jesus, the
- 1:13:55horror film and, you know, is one of the very few times as
- 1:13:59well, where a woman both directs and writes the episode 2.
- 1:14:03Yeah, yeah. Is criminally underrated.
- 1:14:06Can you hear me? Oh yeah, it is.
- 1:14:08It is, I I did a big Jody re-watch earlier in the year.
- 1:14:14I rewatched everything, and I forgot how much I enjoyed the
- 1:14:18episode. And I think also a lot of the,
- 1:14:22the chip, an Woods a better watched outside of the hype.
- 1:14:27So, yeah, for sure this. Oh, you wound up ready for
- 1:14:32what's gonna happen this time was gonna.
- 1:14:33And I think that's what happened with a lot of series 11.
- 1:14:36See ya series 11, where people were so hyped for each episode
- 1:14:42and then people came away disappointed because it was it
- 1:14:45was they were quieter episodes. Whereas I think now a lot of
- 1:14:50series 11 has been reappraised by piece.
- 1:14:53Because a lot. Yeah, yeah, it's not it's not in
- 1:14:56that cloud of, you know, of hype, we're using, every episode
- 1:15:01has to be a big Blockbuster, you know, would you know what's even
- 1:15:04worse was after 11:00 here, and there was a bit of a muted
- 1:15:07reaction to it. So then we've 12, that's all of,
- 1:15:10you know, cancellation anxiety here.
- 1:15:13Yeah. God, you know the ratings are
- 1:15:14down, blah, blah blah. So then it was more important
- 1:15:17than ever that every episode had to be the best thing ever.
- 1:15:21And that's just not how it works.
- 1:15:23No no it doesn't have to be like that like you say later and you
- 1:15:27see the layers and things that they're putting into it the
- 1:15:30thought and the smarts and the visuals and the performance.
- 1:15:34It's yeah. It's a is a goodie yeah.
- 1:15:37Yeah absolutely. I'm really looking forward to to
- 1:15:40doing it as well or listen Jim you're absolutely Charming Man
- 1:15:44as the wonderful evening talking with you now I've enjoyed it.
- 1:15:47Thank you very much for inviting me on Joe let's just say until
- 1:15:51next time until next I'm bi.
