- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm going to regret this.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Welcome to the Nerd Party.
- 0:08Speaker 3: Hi, this is Nick Anstasu, story editor on Star Wars,
- 0:12Speaker 3: The Clone Wars and Star Wars bad Batch, and you
- 0:16Speaker 3: are listening to Aggressive Negotiations.
- 0:22Speaker 4: Welcome to a very special edition of Aggressive Negotiations. I'm
- 0:28Speaker 4: one of your regular hosts, Jedi Master John Nels, and
- 0:31Speaker 4: I am joined as Jedi Master Matthew Rushing is off
- 0:34Speaker 4: on a special assignment gathering poor blood samples to see
- 0:38Speaker 4: if they could become Jedi. I'm joined by dear friend,
- 0:43Speaker 4: longtime friend, founder of the Nerd Party Network, Tristan Riddell,
- 0:48Speaker 4: for a very special episode of Aggressive Negotiations. Now, Tristan,
- 0:51Speaker 4: I know you're a longtime listener, first time guest co host,
- 0:55Speaker 4: so I just want to know how excited are you
- 0:58Speaker 4: to finally appear here on Aggressive Negotiations instead of where
- 1:02Speaker 4: people can typically find us, which is on House Lights,
- 1:05Speaker 4: a film director podcast, also on the Nerd Party Network.
- 1:08Speaker 5: It's I kept trying to rack my brain where I
- 1:11Speaker 5: was like, have I been on before? But I think
- 1:13Speaker 5: you're right. I think I haven't been a co host,
- 1:16Speaker 5: but we did a commentary together one time. I think
- 1:21Speaker 5: there's a bunch of com people. Yes, there were, I
- 1:25Speaker 5: think there was like five or six people, and you
- 1:27Speaker 5: and I had a discussion about nutrition and whether sons
- 1:30Speaker 5: grew taller than their fathers in that discussion. So go ahead,
- 1:33Speaker 5: audience and look up for all the interesting biological conversations
- 1:37Speaker 5: we can have here on Aggressive Negotiations.
- 1:40Speaker 1: During that conversation about the force awakens.
- 1:42Speaker 5: Because Aggressive Negotiations is the longest running show on the
- 1:47Speaker 5: Nerd Party that's still going.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, we are, aren't we?
- 1:51Speaker 5: Yeah? Because first, yeah, because it was it started off
- 1:55Speaker 5: with it was a show that just was called The
- 1:59Speaker 5: Nerd Party, but then we changed it to the Senate Floor,
- 2:02Speaker 5: then changed it to oh geeze show. Right now, it's changed,
- 2:10Speaker 5: it's changed names so many times. It's not the same show.
- 2:12Speaker 5: It's completely not the same show. We just stole the
- 2:15Speaker 5: RSS feed. But then it was like, quote unquote, the
- 2:19Speaker 5: Nerd Party hooked up together with Aggressive Negotiations. We started
- 2:23Speaker 5: the network, the Nerd Party Network, and then we added
- 2:26Speaker 5: on the third show that I started with my wife
- 2:28Speaker 5: called nerd Nuptial, which was delightful, thank you, And that
- 2:33Speaker 5: just kind of we just kept adding shows onto that
- 2:35Speaker 5: and so like Senate Floor is completely different, not the
- 2:38Speaker 5: same show at all. But Aggressive Negotiations has stood the
- 2:41Speaker 5: test of time.
- 2:42Speaker 4: We have stood the test of time. That that is
- 2:44Speaker 4: pretty amazing. I had never thought of it that way,
- 2:47Speaker 4: and I appreciate that. And it's phil Abuster is the
- 2:50Speaker 4: show that you were trying to think of and also
- 2:53Speaker 4: a twenty bad project.
- 2:55Speaker 1: So we love you, we love you, we love you.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Lie.
- 2:59Speaker 5: It's just like I know that, like it was like
- 3:01Speaker 5: it was NERD Party, Senate Floor, then Filibuster. But the
- 3:04Speaker 5: thing is, it's just Lee has Lee and Dallas have
- 3:08Speaker 5: made it their own like it was. It was such
- 3:11Speaker 5: like Philibuster is such their own thing that I don't
- 3:14Speaker 5: even see it related to the Senate Floor or the
- 3:16Speaker 5: original DIRG Party show at all. That's why I had
- 3:18Speaker 5: such a hard time thinking of it.
- 3:20Speaker 1: You know.
- 3:21Speaker 4: And the thing is you mentioned that Aggressive Negotiations where
- 3:25Speaker 4: the unchanging bedrock cornerstone upon which the foundation was built.
- 3:31Speaker 4: And changes are of course the topic of tonight's show. Yes,
- 3:36Speaker 4: there you go, see I go for the Black Sabbath.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I'm going through changes.
- 3:43Speaker 4: We're going to talk whenever you're listening to this about
- 3:46Speaker 4: the special edition changes because it's a contentious topic that
- 3:50Speaker 4: Trosan and I often tease each other about on our teas.
- 3:54Speaker 4: Yes teas lovingly engage in banter about out how right
- 4:01Speaker 4: or wrong one of us might be about accepting or
- 4:04Speaker 4: rejecting certain things about the special editions. Those are the
- 4:07Speaker 4: Star Wars films, specifically the original trilogy.
- 4:11Speaker 5: And I don't I don't know if you remember this,
- 4:13Speaker 5: but this this, I think the special Edition Blu Rays,
- 4:18Speaker 5: not the four K Blu Rays, but the Blu Rays,
- 4:20Speaker 5: the Special Edition Blu Rays. Is was the pseudo beginning
- 4:25Speaker 5: of our friendship because we had talked to each other,
- 4:29Speaker 5: you know, we were mutuals on Twitter and everything like that.
- 4:32Speaker 5: But we had kind of a contentious conversation.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Yes we did, Yes, we did.
- 4:38Speaker 5: The Blu Rays where I said I was like, I
- 4:40Speaker 5: was like, eh, I guess I think I'm probably gonna wait,
- 4:43Speaker 5: like I'm going to hold off on buying them because
- 4:45Speaker 5: they changed them once again. And I remember you you
- 4:50Speaker 5: responded succinctly with your loss. I'm known forgetting to the point.
- 4:57Speaker 5: And I was like, and at that time, I was like,
- 4:59Speaker 5: what A And I replied with I was like, I
- 5:04Speaker 5: didn't say I was losing out on him. I was
- 5:06Speaker 5: just holding off on it, and and it was It
- 5:10Speaker 5: kind of made me reevaluate some things where it made
- 5:14Speaker 5: me realize that, like you know, like once we started
- 5:16Speaker 5: talking more and more, I realized how great of a
- 5:17Speaker 5: guy you were, and how communication and understanding that there
- 5:22Speaker 5: could be miscommunication is so key in text based social media.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Oh is it?
- 5:28Speaker 4: Ever it leads to many many hilarious hijinks through time.
- 5:33Speaker 4: But I gotta tell you, I'm looking forward to this
- 5:36Speaker 4: conversation specifically, not just because of that touchstone in our past,
- 5:41Speaker 4: but I like, especially with the four K, like it's
- 5:46Speaker 4: really the Special Edition changes. I guess we finally hit
- 5:49Speaker 4: a steady state. Every time I say that something changes,
- 5:52Speaker 4: like Lucas will come out of retirement, be like I
- 5:54Speaker 4: want to change that now, or somebody makes like a
- 5:56Speaker 4: ghost change, like they made that ghost unchange and hire
- 6:00Speaker 4: at one point, but I want to I want to
- 6:02Speaker 4: take it all the way back because there is an
- 6:04Speaker 4: age difference between the two of us for me. When
- 6:07Speaker 4: the Special Editions came out, people don't realize this, but
- 6:10Speaker 4: social media didn't exist. I mean, they realized that part
- 6:13Speaker 4: of it, but there was a lot of contentious back
- 6:15Speaker 4: and forth within trade magazines, within friend conversations back and forth,
- 6:21Speaker 4: and things got rather spirited. But I'm a bit older.
- 6:25Speaker 4: I want you to take me through. I want to
- 6:27Speaker 4: know your experience seeing the Star Wars Special Edition in
- 6:29Speaker 4: the theater for the first time. You had seen it
- 6:32Speaker 4: on video beforehand, obviously, yes, yes, What when you first
- 6:37Speaker 4: walked out of that theater in nineteen ninety seven with
- 6:39Speaker 4: all of those changes, was it sort of lost within
- 6:43Speaker 4: the experience of finally seeing it on the big screen
- 6:46Speaker 4: or was it something where you walked out and you
- 6:48Speaker 4: were like, man, that was so cool, But what was
- 6:51Speaker 4: your where were you it was?
- 6:53Speaker 5: I think it was kind of stre Street down the middle?
- 6:55Speaker 1: It was.
- 6:57Speaker 5: It was well advertised that the special additions were making changes,
- 7:04Speaker 5: Like they had really great ad campaigns saying like they're
- 7:07Speaker 5: coming back to the theater. You get to see it
- 7:09Speaker 5: on the big screen, and it's a remaster. And on
- 7:12Speaker 5: top of that, you're going to see new stuff. Most
- 7:15Speaker 5: Isley is going to be expanded, You're going to see
- 7:17Speaker 5: different types of aliens and things like that. And so
- 7:20Speaker 5: I was eleven and ninety seven and I was really
- 7:25Speaker 5: into Star Wars, just like I was at the perfect
- 7:28Speaker 5: age for the special editions to come out, like all
- 7:31Speaker 5: these toys, like the new toys were coming out of
- 7:34Speaker 5: the original trilogy. This was before the prequels, and so like, actually,
- 7:39Speaker 5: right now you might actually be able to see it, John, Like,
- 7:43Speaker 5: there's the Millennium Falcon right behind me. Because the kids
- 7:46Speaker 5: got out all of my old ships and were playing
- 7:49Speaker 5: with them. And I kept all of those toys specifically
- 7:52Speaker 5: for future kids to play with them. And so I
- 7:56Speaker 5: was on the hype train. I mean, everything was awesome,
- 7:59Speaker 5: it was and the changes were, oh cool, we get
- 8:02Speaker 5: to see it in a different way. And so I
- 8:06Speaker 5: was completely ignorant of that, that that back and forth,
- 8:10Speaker 5: that arguing between Gen xers of who had what and
- 8:15Speaker 5: the change and everything like that. And I think because
- 8:18Speaker 5: you know, we were Me and my friends were eleven
- 8:20Speaker 5: years old, and we just thought it was cool to
- 8:22Speaker 5: see only the big screen. We thought the changes were
- 8:23Speaker 5: needle and but at that same time, because they were
- 8:30Speaker 5: special additions, I didn't think Lucas really meant this is
- 8:33Speaker 5: all you're going to enjoy for the rest of your life.
- 8:38Speaker 1: You know.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Let me ask that question, though, I mean, let's put
- 8:40Speaker 4: it out there, because there are people who believe these
- 8:42Speaker 4: special additions there guardge you know, their garbage.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I hate them forever.
- 8:47Speaker 4: I shall hate George Lucas and spit upon his name
- 8:49Speaker 4: because of these changes that are done. You're obviously not
- 8:52Speaker 4: there with it, But do you think there would be
- 8:57Speaker 4: a different feeling about the special edition if there was
- 9:01Speaker 4: not that hard line drawn about you're not getting what
- 9:06Speaker 4: came before again, like this is it?
- 9:10Speaker 1: This is your new only.
- 9:11Speaker 4: Do you think people would have been more receptive and
- 9:14Speaker 4: the conversation's more civil if they had simply said there
- 9:19Speaker 4: are now two versions of like they've done with Apocalypse
- 9:22Speaker 4: Now or Blade Runner or any of a number of films.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Do you think that things are more civil if the
- 9:28Speaker 4: like you're saying, those special editions came out, but you
- 9:31Speaker 4: can still watch the old originals if you want to.
- 9:35Speaker 5: I think definitely. I think the in all honesty, I think,
- 9:39Speaker 5: and I say this with no snark or malice, I
- 9:42Speaker 5: think the special editions probably would have faded into obscurity
- 9:46Speaker 5: because if you have the theatricals available and they those
- 9:51Speaker 5: kept getting remastered and like those kept you know, like
- 9:54Speaker 5: we got a Blue ray, like say you had a
- 9:56Speaker 5: dual Blu ray release, or say you had both versions
- 9:59Speaker 5: available in one complete set. You know, I feel like
- 10:02Speaker 5: there would be I think there would still be arguments
- 10:04Speaker 5: like sowers fans constantly argue, so like say you had
- 10:09Speaker 5: dual releases, like it would always be like, what do
- 10:11Speaker 5: you like? Well, I'm a special edition kind of guy.
- 10:12Speaker 5: I'm a theatrical kind of guy. Now, it's just like
- 10:16Speaker 5: vitriolic because it was a choice that was forced upon us.
- 10:21Speaker 5: But if we had the freedom of choice, I think
- 10:25Speaker 5: it would have been like more akin to ET's special
- 10:30Speaker 5: Edition where they removed the guns and replaced him with
- 10:34Speaker 5: walkie talkies, where like people are like, oh that was
- 10:38Speaker 5: I didn't like that. That was silly, that was stupid.
- 10:40Speaker 5: But you still have that, you still have the theatrical addition.
- 10:44Speaker 5: You can wave it off like anything you don't like
- 10:47Speaker 5: you can wave off because you have the original. But
- 10:50Speaker 5: if you didn't have the original and you're stuck with it,
- 10:52Speaker 5: that's when frustration happens.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Now, before we get into the discussion about the changes
- 10:57Speaker 4: themselves and everything like that, what I would propose is
- 11:00Speaker 4: we live in a technological age where they toyed around
- 11:03Speaker 4: with this with home releases before. I remember I had
- 11:05Speaker 4: a version of Diehard on DVD that was very clunkily done,
- 11:09Speaker 4: where you could choose alternate takes of the way people
- 11:12Speaker 4: said certain lines and stuff like that.
- 11:14Speaker 5: It was do you remember those?
- 11:15Speaker 4: It was nightmarish to try to work through it. It was like,
- 11:18Speaker 4: why is this taking so long to load? And with this,
- 11:22Speaker 4: I honestly think if we really wanted to embrace interactive
- 11:26Speaker 4: technology way of the future sort of thing, I think
- 11:31Speaker 4: that the win would be a version released and they
- 11:36Speaker 4: could charge a fortune for it, probably of where you
- 11:40Speaker 4: could pick and choose which changes you wanted, right where
- 11:44Speaker 4: you could sit there and you could interactively. Because Lucas
- 11:46Speaker 4: was always very good about, you know, making behind the
- 11:51Speaker 4: scenes stuff, structural stuff, all of those sorts of things
- 11:55Speaker 4: available to everybody to see the process, to learn about filmmaking,
- 11:59Speaker 4: and all of those sorts of things. I think it
- 12:01Speaker 4: would be really interesting to have a version where people
- 12:03Speaker 4: could put sort of cobble together and you could find out, Oh,
- 12:07Speaker 4: Tristan held on to these changes, but ditch these, and
- 12:11Speaker 4: John held on to these changes, but ditch those, and
- 12:14Speaker 4: maybe Jedi Master Rushing held on to everything, and each
- 12:19Speaker 4: one is like, well, we all got a hamburger, but
- 12:22Speaker 4: you got lettuce and Tomato, I got Lettuce, Tomato Mayo.
- 12:26Speaker 1: And Matt got all the fixens, right.
- 12:28Speaker 5: I think that's why you have, you know, like twenty
- 12:31Speaker 5: five different fan cuts that are that are out there
- 12:34Speaker 5: and that are popular because people have done that, like
- 12:36Speaker 5: people there there is there are projects. There's really famous
- 12:40Speaker 5: projects like the four K seventy seven project, which is
- 12:42Speaker 5: trying to find the most the purest you know, film
- 12:47Speaker 5: scan of nineteen seventy seven Star Wars and archive it
- 12:52Speaker 5: as best possible dn R it no DNR film grame whatever,
- 12:56Speaker 5: and so they're like, this is this is what you
- 12:59Speaker 5: would have seen in seventy or at least close as
- 13:01Speaker 5: humanly possible. And then there's other fan cuts that will
- 13:05Speaker 5: take kind of despecialize, like Harmony's Despecialized Edition, where it'll
- 13:11Speaker 5: take like the Disney transfers but then tweak them, you know,
- 13:16Speaker 5: to try to get them back to the theatrical. And
- 13:19Speaker 5: then there's other fan cuts where they'll do a mix
- 13:21Speaker 5: and match, like exactly what you're talking about, where they'll
- 13:23Speaker 5: get rid of the Java scene, but they'll keep all
- 13:27Speaker 5: of the Cloud City stuff, you know, things like that.
- 13:31Speaker 4: So I'm glad you talk about that where you know,
- 13:34Speaker 4: ditch the Java scene and keep the Java scene. The
- 13:36Speaker 4: purpose of this discussion is to sit here and have
- 13:38Speaker 4: this conversation, and we'll go ahead and kick it off
- 13:40Speaker 4: with the original Star Wars. You wind up getting a
- 13:46Speaker 4: message that you verify as true from mister George Lucas,
- 13:49Speaker 4: and he says, hey, Tristan, look, I'm never going to
- 13:51Speaker 4: go all the way back to where it was in
- 13:53Speaker 4: seventy seven. But you get to sit down in the
- 13:55Speaker 4: booth with me and Ben Bert and we're going to
- 13:57Speaker 4: reapproach this at it and you were going to get
- 14:00Speaker 4: to weigh in and tell me what I should keep,
- 14:02Speaker 4: what I should ditch. But we're all we're going to
- 14:05Speaker 4: keep changed effects. That's just gonna happen. What are you
- 14:09Speaker 4: saying to him? What's the one thing? What you're given
- 14:12Speaker 4: one thing to start off with, the one thing you
- 14:15Speaker 4: would change back with, unchange or keep or change further.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Even so, I want to limit it within the original
- 14:25Speaker 4: Star Wars.
- 14:26Speaker 5: Well, I mean the easiest thing to say would be
- 14:31Speaker 5: the Greedo scene. I mean, that's that's I feel like
- 14:33Speaker 5: the most contentious in seventy seven. Am I am I wrong?
- 14:38Speaker 1: In that?
- 14:38Speaker 5: Like that that has to be the biggest change that
- 14:40Speaker 5: everybody talks about.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Right, Yes, I remember in ninety seven I I tease
- 14:47Speaker 4: the scene and I said to other friends who were
- 14:49Speaker 4: very outraged by it, I was like, listen, the entire
- 14:52Speaker 4: movie doesn't die because of this scene.
- 14:54Speaker 1: But yeah, that looked a little dodgy.
- 14:57Speaker 4: I I'll go in since you toss it over, I'll
- 15:00Speaker 4: i will say that it's actually the Blu Ray version
- 15:03Speaker 4: back in what was it, twenty eleven or whatever that
- 15:07Speaker 4: got it right. I was like, this is a steady
- 15:09Speaker 4: state I can live with. Ninety seven it didn't work.
- 15:12Speaker 4: Two thousand and four, it wasn't quite right. And then
- 15:15Speaker 4: in twenty eleven they re snipped it and they rearranged
- 15:20Speaker 4: it a little bit, and they gave Han his line
- 15:21Speaker 4: back and everything like that, and it's like it actually
- 15:25Speaker 4: kind of worked.
- 15:26Speaker 5: And I was like, I like, this is that the
- 15:28Speaker 5: one where they digitally moved his head?
- 15:31Speaker 4: Well, what it was was they had restored I don't
- 15:33Speaker 4: remember if they did this in two thousand and four initially,
- 15:35Speaker 4: but number one, as soon as they gave him back
- 15:38Speaker 4: the line. Yes, I'll bet you have, because that cut
- 15:40Speaker 4: always looked terrible where they cut out, Yes, I bet
- 15:44Speaker 4: you'll have his head dodging. I think goes all the
- 15:46Speaker 4: way back to two thousand and four at least. And
- 15:49Speaker 4: I know there's somebody sitting there tearing their hair out.
- 15:50Speaker 4: It's like, why, how can there have been a lot
- 15:53Speaker 4: of changes, folks.
- 15:54Speaker 5: There's a lot of changes, folks.
- 15:55Speaker 1: We're gonna get that stuff wrong. When when did that
- 15:58Speaker 1: change happen?
- 15:58Speaker 4: I don't know, but there were frames cut here and there,
- 16:03Speaker 4: and you know, you know editing better than I do,
- 16:06Speaker 4: But like I could detect that there was like three
- 16:09Speaker 4: frames moved here, you know, like removed here, and like
- 16:13Speaker 4: it moved a little bit faster. And I thought that
- 16:14Speaker 4: twenty eleven was steady state the Gredo scene in the
- 16:18Speaker 4: four K.
- 16:19Speaker 1: I mean, m clunkey, I will concede. It's terrible.
- 16:23Speaker 5: Well, I remember, I remember I was at Target with
- 16:27Speaker 5: my kids and we always go through the Star Wars
- 16:29Speaker 5: toys and it makes me long for ninety seven and
- 16:32Speaker 5: ninety eight, you know, like when like you could walk
- 16:34Speaker 5: down an aisle of a toy st and it was
- 16:37Speaker 5: just filled to the brim with Star Wars toys and
- 16:40Speaker 5: now it's barely a quarter of an aisle. Like as
- 16:44Speaker 5: soon as the four K Blu rays came out like
- 16:46Speaker 5: I saw a Greedo's plushy and you could squeeze him
- 16:50Speaker 5: and he would say different things that Grido said and
- 16:53Speaker 5: it went through like I do about all, you know,
- 16:56Speaker 5: But then I squeezed it twice and it went maconkey.
- 16:58Speaker 4: I was like, you, somebody knew what they were doing
- 17:04Speaker 4: on that line. Somebody was having fun that day.
- 17:09Speaker 5: I mean someone like when those were released like that,
- 17:11Speaker 5: they're just rubbing our noses in it now, Like that
- 17:14Speaker 5: one was very much a there's not crap you can
- 17:17Speaker 5: do about it, and this is this is what we're doing.
- 17:21Speaker 5: So like to me, I feel like that. I think
- 17:23Speaker 5: that was the thing is like some of these changes,
- 17:27Speaker 5: you know, obviously like they were they progressed, some got
- 17:30Speaker 5: better where they're just like, oh they were fined the
- 17:32Speaker 5: cg here a little bit, or they were find the
- 17:34Speaker 5: blade here a little bit, or they fix this Matt
- 17:37Speaker 5: painting here a little bit more, and you keep seeing
- 17:39Speaker 5: that progression. Other times, like like the Grido scene, it's
- 17:43Speaker 5: just there's like huge changes back and forth, like he
- 17:47Speaker 5: dodges his head that he shoots first, he doesn't shoot first,
- 17:49Speaker 5: he shoots second, there's a third blaster. He says, mcclunkey's
- 17:53Speaker 5: head explodes. You know, it's just so strange, Like it's
- 17:57Speaker 5: it's like I'm in I'm in video production, and I
- 18:02Speaker 5: you know, I have clients like everybody else, and so
- 18:05Speaker 5: there's so many times when you create something like the
- 18:08Speaker 5: client says, go make this, and you're like, okay, I
- 18:10Speaker 5: will you go make it and you're with your your coworkers,
- 18:13Speaker 5: You're like, this is really good. I hope the client
- 18:16Speaker 5: doesn't screw it up. And then and then the client
- 18:19Speaker 5: comes in, we want you to change ABC. We're like, okay, fine,
- 18:22Speaker 5: we can still maintain the quality if we change A,
- 18:24Speaker 5: B and C, but as long as they don't touch X,
- 18:28Speaker 5: Y and Z will be fine. And then another person
- 18:30Speaker 5: comes in said we should change X. Okay, maybe we
- 18:32Speaker 5: can keep a little bit of the integrity. No, we
- 18:35Speaker 5: want you to change Y and Z. And then it
- 18:37Speaker 5: becomes a camel and you're just like you're adding all
- 18:40Speaker 5: this stuff onto it. And I've had projects where people
- 18:42Speaker 5: are like, you know, what would be great if you
- 18:44Speaker 5: just got rid of ABC and X, Y and Z.
- 18:47Speaker 5: You're like, oh my god, why didn't I think of that?
- 18:49Speaker 5: That's what I thought was going to happen with Grido
- 18:52Speaker 5: and Han, where all of these changes were going to
- 18:54Speaker 5: be made, and then we're going to come out with
- 18:55Speaker 5: like the eight K release, and it's just it's going
- 18:58Speaker 5: to be the theatrical addition where you know, you know, Han
- 19:02Speaker 5: is the only one who shoots, because it's not even
- 19:03Speaker 5: Han shot first. Han was the only person who shot
- 19:06Speaker 5: in the theatrical addition.
- 19:08Speaker 4: Yes, and this is where I get the most controversial
- 19:12Speaker 4: and get your pitchforks and torches ready, folks. At this point,
- 19:17Speaker 4: mister Lucas comes to me and says, hey, one thing,
- 19:21Speaker 4: you can just whatever. I will do whatever you ask
- 19:25Speaker 4: me to do, because you've been a super fan since
- 19:28Speaker 4: you were three years old and you deserve this, John Mills,
- 19:31Speaker 4: because you're awesome. Okay, I would actually excise the Gredo
- 19:35Speaker 4: scene at this point.
- 19:36Speaker 5: Just completely take it out.
- 19:37Speaker 4: I would just completely take it out because, quite frankly,
- 19:41Speaker 4: the Java scene now has payoff in Return of the Jedi.
- 19:46Speaker 4: I like the Java scene as it's existed since twenty eleven.
- 19:50Speaker 4: It improved in twenty it was a little rough in
- 19:53Speaker 4: ninety seven. It improved in two thousand and four, twenty
- 19:56Speaker 4: eleven and four K scene works for me, and so
- 20:01Speaker 4: I would say keep the job a scene specifically because
- 20:04Speaker 4: I think it actually adds some mystique to Han and
- 20:07Speaker 4: removes the whole thing. Because Lucas said, I didn't want
- 20:11Speaker 4: Han to shoot first, because that's not heroic. He obviously
- 20:14Speaker 4: he's changed as a person, and he felt that Han
- 20:17Speaker 4: doing that wasn't what he wanted to convey. Okay, fine,
- 20:20Speaker 4: the solution is to make Greeto a reference. Why did
- 20:24Speaker 4: you have to fry poor Greto? And so this is
- 20:27Speaker 4: something that happened in the past, not two minutes ago,
- 20:30Speaker 4: and therefore it adds this more to the sense of history.
- 20:35Speaker 4: We didn't see him dump the spice either, you know,
- 20:38Speaker 4: when he got borded by imperial people. Like it's just
- 20:41Speaker 4: one of those things where you know, and you know
- 20:44Speaker 4: you dumped the spice, you killed Greto. Come on, Han,
- 20:47Speaker 4: what's going on? And in the context of that scene
- 20:50Speaker 4: works fine. I would actually just ditch Greto entirely.
- 20:53Speaker 5: If I had to choose between mclunkey and not seeing
- 20:57Speaker 5: the scene, I would choose not seeing the scene. I
- 20:59Speaker 5: think I think you're right, you know, with my back
- 21:01Speaker 5: against the wall, but it was.
- 21:05Speaker 4: Welcome to aggressive negotiations where we force people to do
- 21:08Speaker 4: things they don't want to do.
- 21:09Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I think I think you're right. Like with
- 21:11Speaker 5: the Joba scene, it doesn't need that. Also, we don't
- 21:14Speaker 5: get that double line ring where you know, like Hans says, like,
- 21:19Speaker 5: even I get borded sometimes you think I had a choice,
- 21:21Speaker 5: And it's the exact same line, not just the saxt same,
- 21:24Speaker 5: it's the exact same take and it's infuriating on so
- 21:29Speaker 5: many levels and also side stories. So my wife is
- 21:33Speaker 5: a huge Star Wars fan too. It's one of the
- 21:35Speaker 5: things that we connected on when we when we first
- 21:38Speaker 5: started dating, and I got a hold of some primo
- 21:42Speaker 5: quality theatrical scans of Star Wars seventy seven and so
- 21:47Speaker 5: I said, I was like, hey, we need to watch
- 21:48Speaker 5: this together. And we get to that scene and she's like,
- 21:52Speaker 5: whoa what Han shoots first? And there was no irony
- 21:56Speaker 5: in r voice. She wasn't being sarcastic. And she's also
- 21:59Speaker 5: not online, like she doesn't have social media, and I
- 22:01Speaker 5: just started laughing. I was like, wait, whoa, yeah, what
- 22:05Speaker 5: are you talking about. She didn't get into Star Wars
- 22:08Speaker 5: until the special editions. You know, she wasn't a big
- 22:11Speaker 5: like you know, it was Star Wars fever in ninety seven,
- 22:13Speaker 5: and I remember posting this story online and a mutual
- 22:16Speaker 5: is just like we as a society have failed your wife.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Well, I mean, you know it's interesting though, because did
- 22:25Speaker 4: she feel it made Hans character more interesting to have
- 22:29Speaker 4: him be the one who just shoots and gets it done?
- 22:32Speaker 4: Did she just naturally like that better? Yeah, she's she
- 22:36Speaker 4: her favorite character is Han Solo. She's a big Harrison
- 22:38Speaker 4: Ford fan.
- 22:39Speaker 1: And she had.
- 22:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I know, she had a Han Solo a cardboard
- 22:45Speaker 5: stand up in her room when she was in middle school.
- 22:47Speaker 5: Strangely so did I but in college and so yeah,
- 22:51Speaker 5: so she she loved it. She thought it was more
- 22:53Speaker 5: true to the character in her opinion, because she's like,
- 22:56Speaker 5: he's the rogue, he's the bad boy. Of course, this
- 22:58Speaker 5: is he's stabbed. He's establishing that he's the bad boy,
- 23:03Speaker 5: and this is how he does it. And I never
- 23:04Speaker 5: really thought of it as being like a cold blooded
- 23:08Speaker 5: killer or anything like that, because I'm less like he's
- 23:10Speaker 5: under gunpoint, you know, like it if gear was just
- 23:15Speaker 5: like sitting there saying like you know what you're in trouble.
- 23:17Speaker 5: I'm gonna tell job on you and then he shoots
- 23:19Speaker 5: him in the face. Yeah, that's deranged behavior. Grido has
- 23:23Speaker 5: a gun in his face. Yes, I'm sorry, but here
- 23:28Speaker 5: in this country, No.
- 23:30Speaker 4: No, I think that it's actually kind of self defense,
- 23:35Speaker 4: regardless of any other take on that. But but we're
- 23:38Speaker 4: sitting here, we're focused on Greeto. There are obviously other changes,
- 23:41Speaker 4: so let's broaden it out. There's no there's no limit.
- 23:45Speaker 4: Now what are you unchanging and what are you taking further?
- 23:50Speaker 4: If mister Lucas is sitting with you and he gives
- 23:52Speaker 4: you this opportunity.
- 23:54Speaker 5: Well I would, okay, so like to move on because
- 23:57Speaker 5: we did. I think I think we needed. We need
- 24:00Speaker 5: to get over that hump of the burrito in my goodness, Yeah,
- 24:03Speaker 5: like that that's a big deal. That's a big deal.
- 24:05Speaker 5: So we needed that conversation. But to move on, like
- 24:08Speaker 5: that's the biggest one that I would change. I would
- 24:10Speaker 5: be like, okay, put it back to the original. I
- 24:12Speaker 5: probably because if I put that back to the original,
- 24:13Speaker 5: I'd get rid of Java just because of that duel line.
- 24:16Speaker 5: If that duel line wasn't there, I probably would keep it.
- 24:19Speaker 5: You know, Hey, whatever it's fine, you know, it didn't
- 24:21Speaker 5: really piss me off or anything like that. I thought
- 24:23Speaker 5: it was weird because like when in ninety seven the
- 24:25Speaker 5: CGI was not ready.
- 24:27Speaker 4: No, it wasn't And also like, no matter what Steve
- 24:29Speaker 4: spaz Williams said, it wasn't ready.
- 24:32Speaker 5: It was not ready, and they were clearly just testing
- 24:35Speaker 5: for ninety nine. But I think what I would take
- 24:39Speaker 5: further is make the blades consistent across the trilogy, so
- 24:46Speaker 5: from from New Hope to Empire, make the Youngling Slayer
- 24:52Speaker 5: have a consistent blade draw and color and thickness in
- 24:56Speaker 5: every shot. That's what I would do, Like that's something
- 24:58Speaker 5: that is always other the hell out of me. And
- 25:01Speaker 5: also I'll expand that even further. The fight between Vader
- 25:06Speaker 5: and obi Wan and the hangar, when when obi Wan
- 25:11Speaker 5: is doing that little chim like he's like scrunching his
- 25:15Speaker 5: body together and like backing up, like the blade is
- 25:18Speaker 5: pointing close to the camera lens and so we see
- 25:23Speaker 5: the rotation of the reflectors and it doesn't look like
- 25:26Speaker 5: a lightsaber at all, look like a stick with lights
- 25:28Speaker 5: on it. Fix that same thing. I can't believe that's
- 25:32Speaker 5: made it all the way through, even to the four
- 25:33Speaker 5: K believer. It blows my mind.
- 25:34Speaker 4: You know, it's funny you say that because similar thing
- 25:38Speaker 4: is Luke in the hold of the falcon. You can
- 25:40Speaker 4: see that the the rotators a little bit there. There
- 25:45Speaker 4: are a couple of shots where you can see the
- 25:48Speaker 4: practical stick that's on set, which is sort of like eh.
- 25:55Speaker 4: But it's also you mentioned your surprise that made it
- 25:57Speaker 4: to the four K. There are other things that I'm
- 25:59Speaker 4: surprised it's a four K because I'm one where it's like,
- 26:02Speaker 4: if you're going to make changes, and you're going to
- 26:04Speaker 4: make drastic changes, go whole hog and have somebody like
- 26:10Speaker 4: you or me sitting with you to say, okay, great,
- 26:13Speaker 4: you're going to change that. Those wires coming out of
- 26:16Speaker 4: three Po's head at the Jaha sand Crawler, why are
- 26:19Speaker 4: those still there? I literally I don't comprehend why they're
- 26:24Speaker 4: still there, because they're burned.
- 26:26Speaker 1: In my brain.
- 26:27Speaker 4: Let's get rid of those. Let's get rid of R
- 26:30Speaker 4: five D four behind R two in the moments where
- 26:34Speaker 4: he's blown his rotator because motivator motivator my bad. Sorry,
- 26:40Speaker 4: I'm caught up in the moment and I'm trying to
- 26:42Speaker 4: get to the point.
- 26:43Speaker 1: But you know, whatever whatever.
- 26:44Speaker 5: Details a T shirt that had R five on it
- 26:48Speaker 5: and he has like like gothic wings behind him and
- 26:51Speaker 5: his like gothic art and like this this is really
- 26:53Speaker 5: cool like badass style and it says bad motivator and.
- 26:59Speaker 4: I love it and like got it like a scream
- 27:01Speaker 4: O band writing. You know, like that's awesome, like an
- 27:03Speaker 4: ed hardy shirt. But for our five D four it's
- 27:07Speaker 4: cool or not something yeah, something like that. Yeah, I
- 27:10Speaker 4: but yes, I would take R five D four out
- 27:12Speaker 4: of the shots. But because I think it's almost like
- 27:15Speaker 4: an obstinate refusal to admit that we've seen the movies
- 27:19Speaker 4: more than he has at this point. And I'm not
- 27:23Speaker 4: saying that that's a healthy thing that we have. Okay,
- 27:26Speaker 4: I'm not saying that. I say none of it is
- 27:29Speaker 4: healthy and we know it. Yeah, he actually took a
- 27:32Speaker 4: break from watching the movies for a time. All credit
- 27:35Speaker 4: to him about that.
- 27:36Speaker 1: I see that.
- 27:37Speaker 5: That's the stuff that I agree with you, Like, that's
- 27:39Speaker 5: the stuff that's crazy to me is that there's like
- 27:42Speaker 5: I totally I totally understand replacing all of the English
- 27:45Speaker 5: with arabash cool. You know that those are little hotels
- 27:49Speaker 5: that I really like, Like when he's when he's dact
- 27:52Speaker 5: when Obie's deactivating the truck to beam, you know, when
- 27:55Speaker 5: you see that instead flawless, seamless, great stuff and so on.
- 28:01Speaker 5: One cgi thing that I really liked in seventy seven,
- 28:04Speaker 5: which is now a new hope. I guess we can
- 28:06Speaker 5: call it a new hope now because it's the special editions.
- 28:09Speaker 5: Is Han chasing after the stormtroopers and screaming, and when
- 28:14Speaker 5: he turns the corner and he sees a whole garrison
- 28:18Speaker 5: of troops and tie fighters and atsds and everything like that,
- 28:22Speaker 5: He's like ah and then runs the other way. It
- 28:25Speaker 5: totally makes sense now, like that, like that is funny.
- 28:29Speaker 5: It makes sense, And when you're in a theater, you're like,
- 28:31Speaker 5: they changed it to make sense, you know, like that, Yeah,
- 28:34Speaker 5: I would hardcore keep that.
- 28:36Speaker 1: I absolutely agree with you.
- 28:39Speaker 4: There's actually something that I would change at the end.
- 28:44Speaker 4: And I'm going to come back to the arabsh thing
- 28:47Speaker 4: that you mentioned earlier. But the thing that I would
- 28:51Speaker 4: change is all effects houses, regardless of the movie. Ever
- 28:56Speaker 4: since Star Trek six, the Undiscovered Country have become a
- 29:00Speaker 4: cess with what I call the practice ring. I've always
- 29:02Speaker 4: called this the practice everything that blows up in space
- 29:06Speaker 4: now has a horizontal ring that travels outward for added
- 29:10Speaker 4: to depth and effect or whatever.
- 29:12Speaker 1: It was awesome way to open up Star Trek six.
- 29:16Speaker 4: I still oh but but like that opening where like
- 29:20Speaker 4: the credits end and like the you know, the music
- 29:22Speaker 4: is crescendoed and it goes out and then all of
- 29:24Speaker 4: a sudden using that bam and that wave go.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Out like that was so incredible to watch.
- 29:30Speaker 4: Everybody, It's okay if we don't do that with every
- 29:32Speaker 4: explosion in space now, it's all right, it's fine, we
- 29:35Speaker 4: can we can just have something blow up. I mean,
- 29:38Speaker 4: why not add practice rings to all of the tie
- 29:40Speaker 4: fighters blowing up in the dog fight too?
- 29:42Speaker 1: Right?
- 29:43Speaker 5: Can imagine? Oh my guess I can? I kind of
- 29:45Speaker 5: I want somebody to make that as a fan cut
- 29:47Speaker 5: like that ever a gag? Can you imagine that in
- 29:49Speaker 5: like Jedi, where like all of the targets rings around that,
- 29:55Speaker 5: Oh my gosh.
- 29:57Speaker 4: And actually when when when the executor goes into the
- 30:01Speaker 4: Death Star and it blows up, it can't go in
- 30:04Speaker 4: in the in a full ring just looks like a
- 30:06Speaker 4: little rainbow explosion goes out. All right, Somebody out there
- 30:11Speaker 4: with more time than ither one of us have. Please
- 30:13Speaker 4: make this happen for us, we would appreciate it, but
- 30:16Speaker 4: with h yeah, no, no, no, no, oh, okay, no
- 30:20Speaker 4: no no.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Won't forget. I won't forget the r best.
- 30:22Speaker 5: One thing that has always always bothered me is I
- 30:27Speaker 5: can't remember exactly what was said, but it's it's Vader
- 30:30Speaker 5: and Tarkan alone in the conference room, and you know
- 30:35Speaker 5: what I'm gonna say, And and Tarkan is is yelling
- 30:40Speaker 5: at Vader. I think he's like, like, I think I
- 30:43Speaker 5: think it's I think he's complaining about how Leah lied
- 30:46Speaker 5: to Exterminator. Immediately and the scene is over, they're done talking,
- 30:51Speaker 5: but Prouse is still gesticulating.
- 30:54Speaker 1: It's it's before the end of the scene.
- 30:56Speaker 4: The exact moment you're talking about, you know, is uh
- 30:59Speaker 4: he as something like, you know, I told you she
- 31:02Speaker 4: would be resistant to the mind, Probert.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Or something like that. Go Go ahead and keep yelling.
- 31:06Speaker 4: I can't hear you, whoever's out there, I know I'm
- 31:09Speaker 4: not getting the exact line. It was almost like I
- 31:12Speaker 4: had to go to a therapist to be like, it's
- 31:13Speaker 4: okay not to remember everything. Line for line, John and
- 31:18Speaker 4: Vader stops talking. And then Prouse raises his hand and
- 31:22Speaker 4: like you can tell he's still talking on set, and
- 31:26Speaker 4: he's like gesticulating, and it's like, I've always wondered my
- 31:30Speaker 4: whole life.
- 31:31Speaker 1: Because this goes all the way back to severy seven.
- 31:32Speaker 1: I'm like, what did he say on set? Right?
- 31:36Speaker 4: Was it like, so let me choke that girl death? Okay?
- 31:41Speaker 4: And then Tarkan gave his line.
- 31:43Speaker 5: You know it's I'm telling you man, it's like it's
- 31:45Speaker 5: once you notice it, it's maddening. Like there's so many
- 31:49Speaker 5: things that once you notice it, you cannot unnotice it,
- 31:53Speaker 5: And that is definitely one of those things.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Yes, yes it is.
- 31:56Speaker 4: But you know, going back to our best, you had
- 31:59Speaker 4: actually already broken the cel in reference to Empire and Jedi,
- 32:03Speaker 4: and I'll go ahead and move into the other ones
- 32:05Speaker 4: from the two unless you're not done with the original
- 32:08Speaker 4: Star Wars.
- 32:08Speaker 5: No. Well, I think most Ziely could have been toned
- 32:12Speaker 5: down a little bit. I think if if they expanded
- 32:15Speaker 5: Most Sciicly the way that they expanded Cloud City, I
- 32:18Speaker 5: think that would have been pretty cool. Like if they
- 32:20Speaker 5: did set extensions a few shots here and there, but
- 32:24Speaker 5: like not added in like a new run of Luke
- 32:29Speaker 5: speeder going through and like you know, the robot hitting
- 32:33Speaker 5: the other robot, the the whatever that thing is called,
- 32:37Speaker 5: the ron tar walking ronto, the ronto walking in front
- 32:40Speaker 5: of the camera. Also the CGI aliens stick out like
- 32:44Speaker 5: a sore thumb and erases some really great prosthetic work
- 32:49Speaker 5: that that kind of bugs me. But if they but
- 32:51Speaker 5: I'm all for, like, you know, expanding most siicly and
- 32:54Speaker 5: making it look like a bigger place like they did
- 32:55Speaker 5: with Cloud City, just not that detailed. So scale that back,
- 32:58Speaker 5: but not a race.
- 33:00Speaker 4: See, I wouldn't necessarily scale it back quote unquote, but
- 33:03Speaker 4: it's puzzling to me where if you're going to continue
- 33:05Speaker 4: making changes and refining the Java effect, Obviously it doesn't
- 33:09Speaker 4: look the way it did in ninety seven. I would
- 33:12Speaker 4: have given another pass to most size Ly because those
- 33:15Speaker 4: effects still look like ninety seven effects.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:18Speaker 5: I if, like, if George Lucas was sitting down with
- 33:21Speaker 5: me and said, no, we're keeping most l likely, what
- 33:22Speaker 5: would you change, I'd be like, holy crap, add some
- 33:25Speaker 5: more texture, you know, like just refine what you were doing.
- 33:29Speaker 4: Just the land speeder itself going through town. Yeah, come on,
- 33:32Speaker 4: we got to take some refinement passes.
- 33:34Speaker 1: On that.
- 33:34Speaker 5: Also, the loader bought like the guy who is who
- 33:38Speaker 5: looked like a proto bender. Yeah, flex really but flexil
- 33:42Speaker 5: really close enough. I would yeah, give him another pass.
- 33:46Speaker 5: Dirt Hi up a little bit.
- 33:47Speaker 4: He's too shiny, you know, like that kind of Yeah. So,
- 33:50Speaker 4: but as I was talking about, you know, we broke
- 33:53Speaker 4: the cel, we already referenced Empire and Jedi. That comes
- 33:56Speaker 4: back to the Rabsh. I love like you said, with
- 33:59Speaker 4: a tractor be changing the English to Arabsh. Perfect great,
- 34:04Speaker 4: love it one hundred percent. I actually what is under
- 34:08Speaker 4: my skin from Empire and Jedi is I liked when
- 34:12Speaker 4: the Arabsh moved from right to left because it felt
- 34:15Speaker 4: like a different way to right. Oh, and now they
- 34:18Speaker 4: change it to left to right, and for some reason
- 34:21Speaker 4: that still annoys me.
- 34:22Speaker 5: When did they do that?
- 34:24Speaker 1: Oh? I forget which time they did it. I don't
- 34:26Speaker 1: remember that at all.
- 34:27Speaker 4: Yeah, And it's one of those things where I'm like,
- 34:30Speaker 4: I don't know if it's an assembly error. I don't
- 34:32Speaker 4: know if it's something where they're putting it back together.
- 34:34Speaker 4: And somebody said, oh no, you know, they're used to
- 34:37Speaker 4: writing English, and so they're like, oh, well, I'll right
- 34:39Speaker 4: it left to right, because I always liked that it
- 34:42Speaker 4: moved from right to left, because it had that sense
- 34:45Speaker 4: of they're even not even on Earth, does everybody right
- 34:48Speaker 4: from left to right. There are cultures that right from
- 34:51Speaker 4: right to left. So it made sense to me that
- 34:54Speaker 4: that would work. And because everything has been so ingrained
- 34:58Speaker 4: in me, eh now I'll bow once. That was saying,
- 35:01Speaker 4: I like the work that they did to take R
- 35:06Speaker 4: two and change his change him from having black panels
- 35:12Speaker 4: on his head, and empire strikes back to blue. Thank you,
- 35:16Speaker 4: because we all know that they turned black just because
- 35:18Speaker 4: you were doing the effects that you had no way. Really,
- 35:21Speaker 4: it's like Kirk falling off of the mountain. His outfit
- 35:25Speaker 4: momentarily changes to black because limitations of the technology at
- 35:28Speaker 4: the time, and I.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Wanting of that scene.
- 35:32Speaker 5: Speaking of that scene, I cannot remember, but there was
- 35:36Speaker 5: there was English. Oh R two was speaking to Luke
- 35:39Speaker 5: and it was transcribed and the originals it was English.
- 35:42Speaker 5: Did they change that to Arabash?
- 35:44Speaker 1: No, it was not. It was not English in the original.
- 35:46Speaker 5: Yes it was, it was. It was I remember in nineteen.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Eighty it was the original. It was English.
- 35:54Speaker 5: I remember what I remember pause out with a friend
- 35:58Speaker 5: of mine, I have a distinct memory of this where
- 36:00Speaker 5: I posited with a friend of mine on my old TV.
- 36:03Speaker 5: We had the VHS tape. It was the theatrical additions,
- 36:07Speaker 5: the ones with the CBS Fox logo on the spine,
- 36:10Speaker 5: you know.
- 36:11Speaker 4: Which, of course makes me the stinker to say, well,
- 36:13Speaker 4: was it the thirty five or the seventy milimeter?
- 36:16Speaker 5: Oh no, yeah, that's the thing, Like you can't say like, oh,
- 36:18Speaker 5: it's the exact same ones you saw in the theater,
- 36:19Speaker 5: because nothing, no home release is the exact same that
- 36:22Speaker 5: you saw in the theater. But I remember like we
- 36:26Speaker 5: paused it and got our faces super close to the screen,
- 36:29Speaker 5: and we got so excited that we were able to
- 36:31Speaker 5: actually read what R two was saying to Luke.
- 36:35Speaker 4: I need confirmation of this because I have absolutely no
- 36:38Speaker 4: memory of seeing English on that screen at any point.
- 36:42Speaker 1: I'm not chowing.
- 36:43Speaker 4: I'm not saying you're a liar, a liar, I hope
- 36:47Speaker 4: not outright. No, I'm not saying you're a liar. I'm saying,
- 36:51Speaker 4: like I this is possibly something where I either never
- 36:55Speaker 4: cared enough to look, which is not a dig at you.
- 36:58Speaker 1: I'm saying like it's.
- 36:59Speaker 4: One one of those things where all I've all I
- 37:02Speaker 4: can ever recall seeing is r Besh. So okay, like
- 37:06Speaker 4: I take your word for it, but I got to
- 37:08Speaker 4: get a scan of those moments because I've got to
- 37:11Speaker 4: see what it looked like in nineteen eighty because if it,
- 37:13Speaker 4: if it was English, I got to know what was
- 37:16Speaker 4: being transcribed by, Like I desperately need to know what
- 37:19Speaker 4: the words are and if they actually made sense and
- 37:21Speaker 4: stuff like that.
- 37:22Speaker 1: So well, I will, I.
- 37:23Speaker 5: Will, I will look this up for you, because like, yeah,
- 37:27Speaker 5: because I didn't, I cannot read arabsh and I guarantee
- 37:30Speaker 5: you I could not read it in the nineties. But
- 37:32Speaker 5: I remember high fiving a friend of mine finally being
- 37:36Speaker 5: able to figure out what R two actually said.
- 37:40Speaker 4: See, I would love it if you found out that
- 37:42Speaker 4: all it was was somebody just transcribed their their grocery list,
- 37:45Speaker 4: and they were like, who's ever going to read this?
- 37:48Speaker 1: Right? It's up on screen for a second? Who cares.
- 37:51Speaker 4: It's sort of like The Simpsons did that where you know,
- 37:54Speaker 4: at the end of certain things where the news program
- 37:58Speaker 4: or the news info attainment program would be busted for
- 38:01Speaker 4: saying something they would say and by the way, and
- 38:04Speaker 4: then they're like they'd made some outrageous claim and then
- 38:06Speaker 4: they would have stuff fly by the screen really fast.
- 38:10Speaker 4: And a friend of mine, actually, you know what, the
- 38:12Speaker 4: infamous Joey, who if you listen to house Lights you've
- 38:15Speaker 4: heard Joey referred to many times, paused it one time
- 38:19Speaker 4: when they were doing that, and because he had recorded it,
- 38:22Speaker 4: and when he paused it, one of the lines literally said,
- 38:27Speaker 4: if you're reading this, you have no life. So they
- 38:30Speaker 4: knew that somebody was going to pause it, and they
- 38:32Speaker 4: baked that in there just to mess with them. That's
- 38:35Speaker 4: what I want to find out, oh two. R two
- 38:37Speaker 4: was saying, So all right, well, I will go back
- 38:40Speaker 4: to it. I will try to find a theatric. I
- 38:42Speaker 4: will try to find a theatrical screenshot and see if
- 38:44Speaker 4: it well. As they say in Star Trek six that
- 38:46Speaker 4: I mentioned before, don't wait for the translation answer me now.
- 38:51Speaker 1: So okay, So I've given you know, my.
- 38:54Speaker 4: Own feedback on what I did with the r besh
- 38:56Speaker 4: and what I liked about changing R two's dome. I'll
- 38:59Speaker 4: also quickly toss in that the I'm stealing this from
- 39:02Speaker 4: the way somebody put it on the Star Wars message
- 39:04Speaker 4: boards at the time. The greatest unchange ever, was removing
- 39:08Speaker 4: Luke's scream when he falls down the shaft. Yes, absolutely,
- 39:14Speaker 4: the force that they did that, that they took that out.
- 39:17Speaker 5: Oh Iron remember hearing that scream and thinking even then,
- 39:21Speaker 5: like when it came out, like it didn't make me angry.
- 39:23Speaker 5: It was just confusing because I was like, wait, why
- 39:26Speaker 5: why would he scream? Like when he jumped, he was resolved.
- 39:30Speaker 5: It's like this is happening. This is what I'm doing.
- 39:32Speaker 5: I'm accepting my fate.
- 39:34Speaker 1: He thinks he's going to die. Yeah.
- 39:36Speaker 4: Yeah, he doesn't think he's going to live. He thinks
- 39:38Speaker 4: he's going to die, and he's okay with it. He's like,
- 39:42Speaker 4: this is the better choice, right yeah?
- 39:44Speaker 1: Perfect? Yeah. Yeah.
- 39:46Speaker 5: That was one of those like and that was also
- 39:48Speaker 5: a sign where like some of us were like, oh,
- 39:51Speaker 5: if they can unchange that, what can they unchange in
- 39:55Speaker 5: the future.
- 39:56Speaker 4: Yep, that's true, that's true. But but what would you
- 40:00Speaker 4: one change or what would you take further with the
- 40:02Speaker 4: Empire strikes back?
- 40:03Speaker 5: There is very little. There's very little that I would
- 40:06Speaker 5: change with the Empire special editions. I remember like I
- 40:10Speaker 5: would watch Star Wars, and like when I showed Star
- 40:13Speaker 5: Wars to my eldest like, I got a lower quality
- 40:18Speaker 5: transfer just so I could show her the theatrical addition.
- 40:21Speaker 5: I was like, your first viewing of Star Wars should
- 40:23Speaker 5: be theatrical addition, And but with Empire, I was like,
- 40:26Speaker 5: we can just watch it on Disney Class. It's fine
- 40:28Speaker 5: because I think that the changes are so minimal that
- 40:32Speaker 5: it's okay. Like, I absolutely love what they did with
- 40:36Speaker 5: Cloud City. I think what they did with Clo City
- 40:38Speaker 5: was perfect. I remember Lucas talking about how he felt
- 40:43Speaker 5: like cloud City always felt kind of claustrophobic, you know,
- 40:46Speaker 5: like it was they were, you know, they did what
- 40:48Speaker 5: they needed to do. They couldn't have the type of
- 40:50Speaker 5: windows and the green screens constantly moving around like they
- 40:53Speaker 5: do today. And he was right, like, you know, going
- 40:56Speaker 5: back to the original theatrical, you're like, it does kind
- 40:58Speaker 5: of feel claustrophobic, just because you know you're used to
- 41:01Speaker 5: the special editions. It's still pretty, but it has nothing
- 41:04Speaker 5: on like seeing the outside elevators, the sunset, just the
- 41:09Speaker 5: everything flying around.
- 41:10Speaker 1: I love it.
- 41:11Speaker 5: And also I really like the Wampa too, I do.
- 41:13Speaker 5: I think that the wampa moving around was great. What
- 41:16Speaker 5: do you think about the Wampa?
- 41:18Speaker 4: I like the Wampa The only thing I dislike about
- 41:21Speaker 4: the Wampa, and this is because this is one of
- 41:23Speaker 4: those things where it's.
- 41:24Speaker 1: Just burned into my retinas.
- 41:26Speaker 4: At this point, it'll probably be among the last things
- 41:29Speaker 4: I ever see before I die. Is all three of
- 41:31Speaker 4: these original had actually all six of the Lucas Star
- 41:35Speaker 4: Wars movies playing in front like God will be like,
- 41:38Speaker 4: all right, you get this on repeat one last time,
- 41:41Speaker 4: and that's the last second of life that I have.
- 41:43Speaker 4: But the lighting key is a little off, So if
- 41:48Speaker 4: I were sitting with Lucas, I would dirty it. I
- 41:51Speaker 4: would find some way to in post dirty it up
- 41:55Speaker 4: a little bit to match the dimness of where Luke is.
- 42:00Speaker 4: I also think that some of the sense of place
- 42:03Speaker 4: of the Wampa is a little bit lost in terms
- 42:07Speaker 4: of where he is in relation to Luke, so I
- 42:10Speaker 4: would I would actually probably take it further and find
- 42:14Speaker 4: some way to show the Wampa coming out of somewhere
- 42:18Speaker 4: that's close to Luke, as opposed to when I first
- 42:23Speaker 4: saw it, the sense that was it was sitting there
- 42:26Speaker 4: in front of him.
- 42:27Speaker 1: And it's very, absolutely, very.
- 42:29Speaker 4: Disorienting to me that a movie that George Lucas worked
- 42:33Speaker 4: on would have a sense of place confusion, like that
- 42:36Speaker 4: that Wampa is not in front of Luke. He's somewhere
- 42:40Speaker 4: else or she. I actually, I don't know whether that
- 42:43Speaker 4: wampa is a he or she? Right, But like that
- 42:46Speaker 4: wampa someplace else, Okay, where's it coming from? I would
- 42:51Speaker 4: try to find some way to adjust a little bit
- 42:54Speaker 4: and also dirty up the picture a little bit, because
- 42:56Speaker 4: it is very obviously shot after nineteen eighty. It's just
- 43:01Speaker 4: too clean, and the light is a little too clear
- 43:04Speaker 4: compared to Luke. It's just not I don't know whether
- 43:07Speaker 4: they use some sort of mister on set or whether
- 43:10Speaker 4: there was moisture in the air that wasn't there on
- 43:13Speaker 4: set when they shot the Wampa for the special edition.
- 43:16Speaker 4: But i'd find some way to make it match a
- 43:19Speaker 4: little bit better.
- 43:20Speaker 5: I think you're absolutely right. Like I loved the idea
- 43:24Speaker 5: of the wampa. I loved that we got to see
- 43:26Speaker 5: them articulate and move around and like chomp on it,
- 43:30Speaker 5: chomp on the tonton and everything like that. But you
- 43:33Speaker 5: are one hundred percent about right about the on screen
- 43:36Speaker 5: geography and placement and how it's clearly shot. It's clearly
- 43:41Speaker 5: an insert one hundred percent right. I think that is
- 43:43Speaker 5: one place that could go a little bit further with
- 43:45Speaker 5: the change, Like I love the change, keep it, but
- 43:48Speaker 5: you can go further with it. Absolutely there is you
- 43:52Speaker 5: look like you're gonna say something.
- 43:54Speaker 1: I was going to say.
- 43:55Speaker 4: There's one other thing that I would take further to
- 43:57Speaker 4: get it closer to where it was, which sounds so weird,
- 44:02Speaker 4: but one of my favorite line reads in the original
- 44:05Speaker 4: trilogy and the original Empire Strikes Back is when it
- 44:10Speaker 4: cuts to Vader rounding the corner with everybody following him,
- 44:14Speaker 4: and he simply growls.
- 44:15Speaker 1: He just goes, bring my shuttle right.
- 44:18Speaker 4: You get this sense that Vader whatever is in front
- 44:22Speaker 4: of anybody who gets in front of him, who talks
- 44:25Speaker 4: to him, who does anything, somebody sneezes behind him, He's
- 44:29Speaker 4: going to murder them.
- 44:31Speaker 1: I love.
- 44:32Speaker 4: And it's changed to and form my Star destoryer to
- 44:34Speaker 4: prepare for my Arrival, which was a discarded line that
- 44:38Speaker 4: they had recorded from the original Star Wars and brought
- 44:42Speaker 4: forward because they could repurpose it. So it actually doesn't
- 44:45Speaker 4: sound quite like nineteen eighty Vader either, which is a
- 44:50Speaker 4: nerdy thing to fixate on. But hey, I like to
- 44:54Speaker 4: fancy myself a sound guy. But I would change it
- 44:58Speaker 4: back to bring my shoes shuttle and show the shuttle
- 45:02Speaker 4: landing instead of already being on the landing pad. That way,
- 45:07Speaker 4: I get my line read back and I still get
- 45:10Speaker 4: to see the shuttle taking Vader away, which was the
- 45:13Speaker 4: whole intent of that. That gets me to my happiest
- 45:17Speaker 4: possible place. My question was teeing that up for you.
- 45:21Speaker 4: Oh sorry, go ahead, my bad. I you know it's
- 45:25Speaker 4: a weird thing to fixate on, isn't it. Well, No,
- 45:28Speaker 4: I don't.
- 45:29Speaker 5: Think it's a weird thing because like simple line reads
- 45:32Speaker 5: like that are important. I think it's it can convey
- 45:35Speaker 5: a moment, especially with Vader, because Vader mostly has his voice,
- 45:41Speaker 5: but when he doesn't have his voice, when he's not speaking,
- 45:44Speaker 5: you can, you know, you can project what you want
- 45:47Speaker 5: on him or what you think the feeling of the
- 45:48Speaker 5: moment is. And so no, that's very important. Like to
- 45:51Speaker 5: me personally, I don't mind to prepare for my arrival
- 45:55Speaker 5: because I just I love the line read itself, and
- 45:57Speaker 5: I wasn't emotionally attached to the bring me my Shuttle.
- 46:00Speaker 5: I think both are great, but like the I think
- 46:03Speaker 5: the bring me my Shuttle showcases the anger, but the
- 46:07Speaker 5: prepare for my arrival. I think Showcases is disappointment, and oh.
- 46:11Speaker 1: I hear you.
- 46:12Speaker 5: That's where I'm from.
- 46:13Speaker 4: I hear you on that, and I just have a
- 46:16Speaker 4: very odd I mean, maybe I have deep seated anger
- 46:21Speaker 4: issues and that's why I respond to him growling as
- 46:24Speaker 4: he comes across, just to.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Be like, I want to kill everybody. Like I love
- 46:29Speaker 1: that line.
- 46:30Speaker 5: Read also this just in folks, I am looking at
- 46:34Speaker 5: a theatrical reconstruction of the Empire strikes back right now,
- 46:38Speaker 5: and I am in Luke's cockpit and I am zoomed
- 46:42Speaker 5: in super Far and it is Ara Besh, Yes, victory job.
- 46:48Speaker 5: So what the hell was I looking at?
- 46:51Speaker 1: Like?
- 46:52Speaker 5: Did they change it for the VHS? Is it a
- 46:55Speaker 5: complete non memory that I made up in my head?
- 46:58Speaker 5: It was I remember high five and my buddy.
- 47:02Speaker 4: It's a non memory like the people that saw the
- 47:06Speaker 4: making of Star Wars narrated by William Conrad in the
- 47:09Speaker 4: nineteen seventies that had shots of the cutout big scenes
- 47:15Speaker 4: that insisted that they saw Star Wars with bigs in it,
- 47:19Speaker 4: and all of us said, you're out of your damn mind,
- 47:22Speaker 4: that's not true. Which actually, before we go to Jedi,
- 47:25Speaker 4: I want to share a funny, non memory sort of thing,
- 47:28Speaker 4: one of my favorite things, and I'm sure that it
- 47:32Speaker 4: would play poorly for me on social media if social
- 47:35Speaker 4: media had existed at the time. One of my favorite
- 47:38Speaker 4: things in history has always been to go to a bookstore.
- 47:41Speaker 4: It's my happy place in my world, in my worldview.
- 47:46Speaker 1: I should say, my life view. Heaven is a giant.
- 47:50Speaker 4: Library and you can rent movies there too, just so
- 47:54Speaker 4: you know.
- 47:54Speaker 5: It's the upgraded library of Alexandria.
- 47:58Speaker 4: Yes, it puts it to shame. And it looks like
- 48:00Speaker 4: Walden Books of the nineteen nineties. Those of you old
- 48:03Speaker 4: enough to remember Walden Books, you know what I'm saying.
- 48:06Speaker 4: So I was in a Walden Books with a friend
- 48:09Speaker 4: of mine and I was like, I just want to
- 48:10Speaker 4: see if there were any Star Wars books that I
- 48:12Speaker 4: missed that were released, because that could happen back in
- 48:14Speaker 4: the pre internet day's kids, trust me.
- 48:17Speaker 1: And so you would go and you would check.
- 48:18Speaker 4: The aisles because it's like, oh, is there a Star
- 48:20Speaker 4: Wars book that I didn't know was coming out? And
- 48:22Speaker 4: I got there and I got in a discussion with
- 48:25Speaker 4: a fellow Star Wars fan.
- 48:27Speaker 1: It's like, hey, you know, hey, a Star Wars fan.
- 48:29Speaker 4: And she insisted that Wedge died in The Empire Strikes
- 48:34Speaker 4: Back because she was confusing that Wedge was read two
- 48:41Speaker 4: in Star Wars but Rogue three in The Empire Strikes Back.
- 48:45Speaker 4: And I promise you I didn't get nasty or anything
- 48:48Speaker 4: like that, but I basically just refused to concede, and
- 48:52Speaker 4: I was like, trust me, trust me, Rogue, please go
- 48:56Speaker 4: home and rewatch the movie. You have to believe me
- 48:59Speaker 4: on this. And it was one of those things. So
- 49:01Speaker 4: I think that possibly you have one of those memories
- 49:04Speaker 4: constructed for you, just like for years I had constructed
- 49:07Speaker 4: for me in Return of the Jedi that I had
- 49:10Speaker 4: seen Luke jump up and hang on to the grating
- 49:15Speaker 4: in Java's palace when he was in the rank or pit,
- 49:19Speaker 4: and I later had to go through and say, no,
- 49:21Speaker 4: I saw that in the story books. That's where I
- 49:25Speaker 4: saw that, And I convinced myself in the pre everybody
- 49:29Speaker 4: owns a copy of the movie days that I must
- 49:31Speaker 4: have seen that as well because it was in the storybook.
- 49:33Speaker 4: Therefore I must have seen it in the movie as well.
- 49:37Speaker 4: So that brings us to Return of the Jedi. And
- 49:39Speaker 4: I'm gonna go ahead and say it, I'll go jump
- 49:42Speaker 4: right into it. I like what they did with the Sarlac.
- 49:45Speaker 4: I like that the Sarlac is more active and has
- 49:47Speaker 4: a beak, and I can tell that you are going
- 49:51Speaker 4: to disagree with me.
- 49:53Speaker 1: Well.
- 49:57Speaker 5: Book of Bubbafett, even though I didn't really like the
- 49:59Speaker 5: show that much, kind of helped me make my peace
- 50:02Speaker 5: with it. Got it because it's like, because there was
- 50:06Speaker 5: that question before the show came out, We're like, okay,
- 50:09Speaker 5: we're clearly going to see Boba Fett vomited onto the beach,
- 50:14Speaker 5: you know, from the Sarlac. So which way is he
- 50:16Speaker 5: gonna go? Is he gonna go theatrical? Is he gonna go?
- 50:18Speaker 5: A special addition, which way is he gonna go? And
- 50:21Speaker 5: he fakes you out where like you first see it
- 50:24Speaker 5: as the theatrical and you're like, oh, this is ballsy, Okay,
- 50:27Speaker 5: here we go. But then we see the beak is
- 50:30Speaker 5: more internal, like it's coming out like kind of like alien,
- 50:34Speaker 5: you know, like the xenomorph, And I thought that was cool.
- 50:37Speaker 5: I like that, and so like now when I watch Jeni,
- 50:40Speaker 5: I kind of think of it that way.
- 50:41Speaker 1: I would have liked the.
- 50:44Speaker 5: Sarlac better if it wasn't so blaringly obvious. It was
- 50:49Speaker 5: ninety seven CGI. Yeah, it needs refinement mixed live action footage.
- 50:54Speaker 5: I think that's what really pisses me off is just
- 50:58Speaker 5: it's such a low quality insert as opposed to just
- 51:02Speaker 5: a prosthetic.
- 51:04Speaker 4: I will absolutely can see that they need to refine
- 51:08Speaker 4: the effect, But overall, I like the effect, specifically because
- 51:14Speaker 4: of the fact that I think it makes this starlac
- 51:16Speaker 4: more and I don't want to use this word, but
- 51:20Speaker 4: believable in a sense because just being a toothy gash
- 51:26Speaker 4: in the desert, you're not going to catch anything, and
- 51:30Speaker 4: instead giving it the beak and the more active tentacles,
- 51:34Speaker 4: You're like, okay, you can go ahead and grab something,
- 51:37Speaker 4: and you know, and the beak can come out and
- 51:40Speaker 4: grab it, and those sorts of things. I'm like, Okay,
- 51:42Speaker 4: that feels a little more trapdoor spidery to me. That
- 51:46Speaker 4: feels a little more this thing could survive in the
- 51:48Speaker 4: desert sort of thing. And if you've ever been to
- 51:51Speaker 4: doc Ondars at Galaxy's Edge, it's delightful because they have
- 51:55Speaker 4: a supposedly baby Sarlac in a container and so you
- 52:00Speaker 4: get to see the entire underground structure of a Sarlac.
- 52:04Speaker 4: It's super cool seeing it live in person, quote unquote
- 52:09Speaker 4: is pretty neat.
- 52:11Speaker 1: I dig it very much. So I like the beak.
- 52:14Speaker 4: I like the fact that it makes it seem like
- 52:16Speaker 4: a desert, like the sort of thing that can survive
- 52:19Speaker 4: in the desert, that still has a predatory thing even
- 52:22Speaker 4: though it's anchored to a single spot. Because you know,
- 52:28Speaker 4: as much as I love the original effect, and obviously
- 52:30Speaker 4: Return of the Jedi, here's where I get controversial again.
- 52:34Speaker 4: Return of the Jedi is my favorite of the original trilogy,
- 52:36Speaker 4: always has been, always will be, and get it. And
- 52:40Speaker 4: the thing is, I remember what that effect looked like.
- 52:44Speaker 4: It wasn't an effect, what that practical thing looked like,
- 52:47Speaker 4: and there were limitations. So it's sort of one of
- 52:50Speaker 4: those things where I'm like, if I have to live
- 52:51Speaker 4: with a limitation, the fact that I wish they'd update
- 52:54Speaker 4: the CG, that's the one I'd prefer to live with.
- 52:57Speaker 4: So that's just where I land with it. So you
- 53:00Speaker 4: seem to be in the same spot where it's like,
- 53:01Speaker 4: if they would just update the damn effects the way
- 53:04Speaker 4: they did with Jaba in twenty twenty four and twenty eleven,
- 53:08Speaker 4: we can be friends again.
- 53:10Speaker 1: And you're okay with that change and.
- 53:11Speaker 5: May maybe even show a little bit more movement in
- 53:15Speaker 5: and out where you see that it doesn't just exist
- 53:19Speaker 5: outwards like we did in like in the special edition
- 53:21Speaker 5: of Jedi. But's make it more like the Book of
- 53:25Speaker 5: Bubba Fet where it can go in and out where
- 53:26Speaker 5: like maybe we see it emmert like the like Java's
- 53:30Speaker 5: sailing Bargs, like comes up on the side and we
- 53:32Speaker 5: see it start to come out a little bit more
- 53:34Speaker 5: like make it much more intimidating.
- 53:36Speaker 4: I think that was the intent, and they just couldn't
- 53:39Speaker 4: pull it off. Yeah, Like, that's the way I read
- 53:42Speaker 4: it is that thing is usually in there and it
- 53:43Speaker 4: comes out so okay. But there were some other minor
- 53:48Speaker 4: changes in Jedi. Interestingly enough, it's minor. It is the
- 53:52Speaker 4: it is the most unchanged of them except for the ending.
- 53:57Speaker 5: How no no, no, no no, no, I really, I I
- 54:00Speaker 5: don't believe that. I feel like Jedi is the most.
- 54:02Speaker 4: Changed really outside of the Starlight. What do you feel
- 54:05Speaker 4: is the most changed? There's a musical number, dude, eh
- 54:11Speaker 4: that that seriously lets you know what I think about
- 54:13Speaker 4: that extended musical number is I'm like, I love Lapteck.
- 54:17Speaker 1: I love it.
- 54:18Speaker 4: I grew up listening to the Jedi soundtrack NonStop. I
- 54:21Speaker 4: miss Lapteck, totally do. But at the same time, the
- 54:25Speaker 4: musical number, I'm like, oh, right, it's that that musical number.
- 54:29Speaker 4: I'm guessing you're about to go into Oh no, that's
- 54:32Speaker 4: gotta go or oh, oh my gosh, no gotta go.
- 54:36Speaker 5: There's no way to make that better like that. To me,
- 54:39Speaker 5: that is what the hell were you thinking? Like even
- 54:42Speaker 5: as a kid, I was like, this is friggin' stupid,
- 54:45Speaker 5: Like wow, And then we have like a close up
- 54:48Speaker 5: of him doing the doing a big big yell, hitting
- 54:52Speaker 5: the hitting the note. We see like spit dangling from
- 54:55Speaker 5: his teeth.
- 54:56Speaker 1: Jaw Yaoza is the character.
- 54:58Speaker 5: That you're j jaw Yausa and what size Noodles is
- 55:03Speaker 5: no longer a puppet. It's it's bad CGI mixed with
- 55:06Speaker 5: live action. It's just like the Beak, you know. It's
- 55:09Speaker 5: just it doesn't Not only is it unnecessary, but I
- 55:13Speaker 5: think it betrays the tone of Java's palace, like his
- 55:18Speaker 5: the vibe that he has going on. It's too active.
- 55:21Speaker 1: I mean, I listen for me, it's one or the other.
- 55:26Speaker 1: I don't care.
- 55:26Speaker 4: Like if you came in and I'm talking with mister
- 55:29Speaker 4: Lucas about the musical number, I'm like, I don't know,
- 55:31Speaker 4: we can leave it in there, and you like kick
- 55:33Speaker 4: the door open and you're like, you're out of your mind, John, No,
- 55:36Speaker 4: it's got to change.
- 55:36Speaker 1: I'd be like, or it can change back, that's fine.
- 55:39Speaker 5: I love how you started like walking there like George,
- 55:43Speaker 5: yeah you mind, Yeah, no, yeah, absolutely, this this is
- 55:48Speaker 5: non negotiable. Get it out of there. It doesn't need
- 55:51Speaker 5: to be in there, and okay. It just I feel
- 55:53Speaker 5: like it's a weird juxtaposition with the tweele like dying
- 55:59Speaker 5: and then you this musical number going on. It's just
- 56:01Speaker 5: I don't know, it just doesn't fit.
- 56:03Speaker 1: Oh.
- 56:03Speaker 5: One thing that we didn't talk about in Empire that
- 56:06Speaker 5: and you know, I'm surprised that we didn't bring it up, considering,
- 56:08Speaker 5: you know, talking about like voice changes and things like that,
- 56:10Speaker 5: was changing Boba's voice.
- 56:14Speaker 1: I'm fine with it. I never will bother me.
- 56:17Speaker 5: If I hate that they erased an actor's performance, that
- 56:21Speaker 5: bothers me. And if like first I would tell George,
- 56:26Speaker 5: don't do it, because you're erasing somebody's performance from history
- 56:29Speaker 5: like that that's that's not okay.
- 56:31Speaker 1: I don't like that.
- 56:33Speaker 5: If he's like, screw you, Tristan, you know, like I'm
- 56:36Speaker 5: paying you, I'd be like, fine, okay, we're gonna change it.
- 56:39Speaker 5: Make tomorrow Morrison is Tomorrow Morrison.
- 56:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:43Speaker 5: Make him read his lines more like the original like
- 56:48Speaker 5: it's it's it's it's a weird line reading because we're
- 56:50Speaker 5: so used to it, where like like we we get
- 56:54Speaker 5: like he's worth a lot to me, it gets you
- 56:56Speaker 5: he's worth a lot to me.
- 56:57Speaker 1: You know.
- 56:58Speaker 5: It's just it's just strange. It's just it's nowhere near
- 57:03Speaker 5: as intimidating or mysterious.
- 57:05Speaker 4: I agree, it's not as intimidating or mysterious, but it
- 57:09Speaker 4: doesn't bother me in the same way. Initially it bothered
- 57:12Speaker 4: me because again it's.
- 57:14Speaker 1: Ingrained in my brain.
- 57:16Speaker 4: It's just like the line read, bring my shuttle. This
- 57:19Speaker 4: is what I've remembered for all time. I like, so
- 57:23Speaker 4: it's it was difficult for me to get to this point.
- 57:27Speaker 4: But now that I've gotten to this point is why
- 57:29Speaker 4: I don't care anymore. If that makes sense, like that,
- 57:32Speaker 4: there's I guess you could almost argue it's say Stockholm
- 57:35Speaker 4: syndrome sort of thing. I just made peace with my captivity.
- 57:38Speaker 4: And I'm like, Okay, that's fine.
- 57:40Speaker 1: That's what.
- 57:40Speaker 5: Well, since we're on tomorrow, Morrison still like like, like,
- 57:43Speaker 5: if you're going to do Tomorrow, Morrison, like go to
- 57:45Speaker 5: Jedi and really do it where don't have the what the.
- 57:50Speaker 1: Like?
- 57:50Speaker 5: Have him do it? You know, you kept the original
- 57:52Speaker 5: line reading in Jedi, but you don't have Morrison scream.
- 57:56Speaker 5: You don't have him say what the you know and
- 57:57Speaker 5: everything like that, like or at least at least have
- 58:01Speaker 5: deep Bradley Baker do it, which he could absolutely.
- 58:06Speaker 4: Uh yeah, I mean, but that one in Jedi that's
- 58:09Speaker 4: sort of like three Po's head wires in the original
- 58:12Speaker 4: Star Wars. It's like, eh, okay, I mean I I
- 58:15Speaker 4: just got to make peace with that sort of thing.
- 58:18Speaker 5: I mean, we're hitting the hour mark. Yeah, And there
- 58:21Speaker 5: are two things. Well, there's one thing that I think
- 58:23Speaker 5: is a crime against humanity, go for it, and nope,
- 58:27Speaker 5: three things, damn no. One thing that's a one thing
- 58:29Speaker 5: that's a crime against humanity, all right, One that is
- 58:35Speaker 5: a kick in the slacks, and one that is a
- 58:37Speaker 5: slap in the face. Okay, so the kick in the
- 58:40Speaker 5: slacks is getting rid of the Ewok celebration song at
- 58:44Speaker 5: the end, Okay, kicking the slacks slap in the face
- 58:49Speaker 5: is Hayden Christiansen's costume test being disagree, being put over
- 58:54Speaker 5: on Anakin's force, ghost disagree, crime against human? Is Vader going, No, okay, true.
- 59:04Speaker 4: We don't have another hour at this point. No, no,
- 59:07Speaker 4: we don't have another hour.
- 59:09Speaker 5: If you and I, if you and I are going
- 59:11Speaker 5: to be remain friends, I mean you and I, like
- 59:14Speaker 5: people don't actually know how close we are in real life,
- 59:17Speaker 5: that's true. I need a level of acceptance from you.
- 59:22Speaker 5: When Vader is looking at Luke, his son, and he's
- 59:26Speaker 5: looking at the Emperor, his longtime mentor and captor, and
- 59:31Speaker 5: the Emperor is torturing his biological son, and he's screaming, father, please,
- 59:37Speaker 5: And in the original it is so I know this,
- 59:41Speaker 5: this word is overused, but I'm using it appropriately. That
- 59:45Speaker 5: moment is so epic and Shakespearean Greek. Anything you could
- 59:50Speaker 5: throw at it. And Vader he is as motionless as
- 59:54Speaker 5: a statute, but yet he is conveying every single bit
- 59:58Speaker 5: of emotion that we need in that scene. And we
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: see him think about it, we see him contemplate it,
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: we see we relive the previous two movies and the
- 1:00:08Speaker 5: previous three that had yet to be made, all in
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: our heads in that moment, and he decides silently to
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: pick up his master and captor and kill him by
- 1:00:17Speaker 5: throwing over the side. It's a beautiful moment in cinematic
- 1:00:21Speaker 5: history that Lucas and Company took their pants down and
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: shut on.
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: Okay, now, I want to keep in mind we're gonna
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: walk out of this as friends.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: I I love everything you said about the original way
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: the scene is done because I love the music.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: Cue two.
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: John Williams showed up to work that day and he
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: when that that drumbeat goes boom, and all of a sudden,
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: the music turns and upswells that is you want to
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: stand up and just be like.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: Yes, he's coming back. Who cares if he slaughtered and
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: murdered children.
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: It's fine, He's okay because he's saving his son. But
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: I also wind up liking the no for two reasons,
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: one of which is sincere and the other of which
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: is just being cheeky.
- 1:01:14Speaker 5: The first one, I know your cheeky response. I know
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: what it's going to be, and I'll tell you. I'll
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: let you know if I was right.
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: Okay, So the first part is I like that he
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: says no, like it gives a sense of like, I
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: don't think it's necessary per se, but I like the
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: fact that he like he's vocalizing in that moment. No,
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: this will not happen. I will not let this happen.
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: It works for me, and I think that the it
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: works with the music. I know the history of the
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: line and the read that they use Leave me alone,
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: don't care. The other thing where I am cheeky is
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: that somebody screaming no is in all of the other
- 1:01:59Speaker 4: Original Trilogy movies, and Jedi was the only one. I
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: actually wrote a blog about this at the time that
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: Jedi was the only one that didn't have anybody shouting no.
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: And then the Blu Rays came out and he shouted no,
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: and I felt like I was responsible for it. That
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: George Lucas read my blog and he said, you know
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: that's true, nobody does yell no. I'll put that in.
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: And so I feel like that's a love letter to
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: me in a strange way, because now all six of
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: those movies have somebody shouting no. And therefore, were you right?
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: Did you guess the cheeky response.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: No, I was wrong.
- 1:02:38Speaker 5: I was wrong, I thought the cheeky response, which I
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: think is the real reason he did this is he
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: got so much hate after two thousand and five with
- 1:02:48Speaker 5: Return of the Sith because when Vader, like when Palpatine
- 1:02:52Speaker 5: tells him that, he's like, oh yeah, you killed pedme
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: in your anger, and he goes, you know, like that
- 1:02:59Speaker 5: was made on ruthlessly.
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: Which I think is unfair because I love it, But
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: go ahead, I think it was unfair too. I do
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: that bothered. That moment didn't really bother me that much.
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: I thought that that's where the love remains between us,
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: like that, that's the common bond.
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: Like I like, if it didn't happen, it's fine, but
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: it did happen, it's fine, whatever whatever. But I feel
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: like I think Lucas is a vindictive person.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: I really do.
- 1:03:24Speaker 5: I think he's I think he's vindictive, not in a
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: mean like, not in a hateful way, but like the
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: way that my two year old is mean spirit and
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: like will poke her sister.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: Just to piss her off.
- 1:03:37Speaker 5: He said, He's like, oh yeah, fanboys, you didn't like that,
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: he said? No? In Return of the Sith, Well, I'm
- 1:03:43Speaker 5: gonna make advantage of this excuse me, revenge of the Sith,
- 1:03:46Speaker 5: like I'm gonna make him say no. And you're beloved
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: Richard of the Jedi. And I really think that was
- 1:03:52Speaker 5: the reason. I would one percent think that's the reason
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: I'm not I'm not joking or being facetious. I really
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: think that's why he.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: Put it in. Well, I disagree with you, and now
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: I forgot the other two things.
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: That that that that that you talked about. Oh, Hayden
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: Christensen appearing wrote a blog about this too, because this
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: is contentious but and this is the thing where it's like,
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: feel free to disagree with it because it's something where
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: you know, like I can be pulling a sympathy card
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: out sort of thing like this is one of those
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: things where I do not intend it as a I
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: just threw up an invisible emotional shield and if you
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: come at me, it's not fair not doing it in
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: that way at all. But I wrote a blog about
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: it at the time as well, where my mom passed
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: many years ago and well before the special the you know,
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: Hayden Christensen appearing in two thousand and four, and this is.
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: How you you log time just so you know.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: Folks, Yeah, basically it is.
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: But basically, when I see my mom, I don't see
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: the way she was at the end. I see her
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: as I I remember her, which is the moments where
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: we had connection and love and all of those sorts
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: of things. I like Hayden Christensen appearing specifically because it's
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: like a reward to Luke, because Luke has never seen
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: his father as a good person, has never seen the
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: unscarred Anakin Skywalker, has never seen the person before he fell,
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: and therefore it feels like a reward to say, I
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: have been restored as I should have been to begin with.
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: You have given me back what I was when I
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: was right, when the world was okay. And so I
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: think Luke has earned it by that point. I think
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: that it's appropriate for Anakin to reveal himself as Look,
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: I wasn't always that hideous, deformed creature that you saw
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: when you took the mask off. This is the real me,
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: This is who I was before I lost my way.
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: That is why I like it, That is why it
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: works for me so well. That is absolutely it could
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: be something as pedantic as because it was like, oh no,
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: I want to show the actor there now, it doesn't matter.
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: The way I read that scene is Luke has earned
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: the right to see his dad as his dad was
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: a good person. If so, oh well, why wasn't obi
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: Wan younger? Because when Luke encountered obi Wan, obi Wan
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: was still far Like that's the obi Wan he knew,
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: and the obi Wan he knew was a good person
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: who had been resolved with a lot of things. Same
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: with Yoda. He never got to see his father at
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: a point where and that's sort of the last point
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: at which Anakin Skywalker was okay with himself.
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: If that makes sense. I think that's absolutely makes sense.
- 1:06:36Speaker 5: And that's actually what I said for years when I
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: was trying to defend it, like it when it first
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: came out, I was kind of like.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: Okay, okay, okay, all right.
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's when he turned. That's
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: when he was in the light side, and then he
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: turned to the dark side. And so that's why he
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: would be a force ghost, because that's when he was
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: on the light side. And so like I kept that's
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: what I said. That's how I lied to myself.
- 1:06:59Speaker 5: No, that's that's what I would say to myself, you know,
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: like and I try to defend it with other people.
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: But then like the more I thought on it, the
- 1:07:06Speaker 5: more I tried to analyze it, I just just didn't
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: sit right with me. And then when I find out
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: that it was just because of it, it was from
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: a costume test, and that's why I just didn't fit
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: right and look right. I think that's one of those
- 1:07:18Speaker 5: Sarlac things, like if they did it a little bit better,
- 1:07:21Speaker 5: like if it was like a full replacement kind of thing,
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: and like they actually brought in Hayden Christiansen. They should
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: have they should have used some of the They should
- 1:07:28Speaker 5: have had him do it when they filmed a Soka,
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: you know, like they should have had him like refilm
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: it in front of a green screen and then like
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: PLoP them in.
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: And I have a feeling that if Lucas was active,
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: that's that's what would have happened. But you know, I listen,
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: that's just where I am with it. And in terms
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: of the E Walk song, it made sense that because
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: Williams himself said it's been re edited, it's got different shots,
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: and he said it has a different flow it. So
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: it was Williams's call to say, I feel like that
- 1:08:00Speaker 4: needs something different at the end.
- 1:08:02Speaker 5: So I argue with that, Like I can't argue with
- 1:08:05Speaker 5: that at all. It makes perfect sense. I remember seeing
- 1:08:08Speaker 5: that in the theaters as a kid, and I'm like,
- 1:08:11Speaker 5: is that New York?
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: Like what what do you write? Yeah?
- 1:08:15Speaker 5: And but yeah, like the song like it's a good
- 1:08:18Speaker 5: piece of music. It's my it's just nostalgia based. Like
- 1:08:24Speaker 5: I loved the Ewok celebration song so much as a kid. Oh,
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: I still do, like I oh, and like you actually
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: bought me the vinyl of Return of the Jedi, and
- 1:08:35Speaker 5: I I think you you, I think you bought it
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: for me as a gift. It was okay, was it
- 1:08:42Speaker 5: a Christmas gift?
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: It was a Christmas gift? Okay, because I.
- 1:08:45Speaker 5: Wasn't sure if it was because it was celebrating the
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: birth of my firstborn or if it was a Christmas
- 1:08:49Speaker 5: gift because I remember sending you video of of my
- 1:08:53Speaker 5: eldest when she was a newborn, and I'm like shaking
- 1:08:56Speaker 5: her hands to the Ewok song celebration. But it's just
- 1:08:59Speaker 5: like with me, my sister, my mom, and my dad,
- 1:09:01Speaker 5: all four of us would just like when they go
- 1:09:04Speaker 5: the yeah, like we would all like make our faces
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: really big and like fling our fingers out like we're
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: doing jazz hands, and so it's all nostalgia based, like
- 1:09:15Speaker 5: just that's the entire reason.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: Hey, And the thing is, that's fine.
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: I just want an addition of the soundtrack that has
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: both versions on it is what I'm looking for, because
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: I do we not have.
- 1:09:29Speaker 5: The original I mean, I mean the special edition. Do
- 1:09:32Speaker 5: we not have that piece of music on the soundtrack?
- 1:09:34Speaker 4: We do not have that piece of music on the soundtrack.
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: And also, you know, please, it's a whole other episode
- 1:09:40Speaker 4: to have me complain about all of the album releases.
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: And the fact is, like, why would you remaster the
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: original nineteen eighty three version of the Return of the
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: Jedi soundtrack that was so limited and only a single
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: disc when it could have been double discs But soundtracks
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: weren't selling particularly well at the time, so it was
- 1:09:56Speaker 4: only a single disc. But I listened to it NonStop
- 1:09:58Speaker 4: so much that the record almost wore, even though I
- 1:10:01Speaker 4: still have it. But I just wish that they would
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: just I don't understand. Sometimes. Look, I'll be upfront, a
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: lot of the marketing decisions that they make now seem
- 1:10:13Speaker 4: really to be corporate Disney decisions, as opposed to the
- 1:10:17Speaker 4: effortless Howard Roffman marketing decisions where he was so in
- 1:10:22Speaker 4: tune with the fans that he knew what to release
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: and how to release it that that soundtrack is tantalizingly
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: out of reach. Still, but it's possible, guys, just a
- 1:10:35Speaker 4: little bit of effort anyway. You know, as we come
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: to a close here, what I love is that we
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: made it through this whole thing without once having an
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: argument about Ewok's blinking, because I have no problem with
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: it and nobody else should either. But Tristan, before we go,
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: I want to express I'm so grateful to you for
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: being a guest here on aggressive negotiations. I'm sorry it
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: took so long, but I'm glad I had an excuse
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: for it, and it's been an absolute delight. And I
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: think this tease us up to have a potentially shorter
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: episode talking about the differences but between the theatrical and
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: home release versions of the prequel trilogy, even though there
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: are differences that exist, So maybe we'll tee that up
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: for the next time that you're on. But do you
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: want to tell people where they can find you? Oh,
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: you better.
- 1:11:25Speaker 5: Have me on again soon, because by the time I'm
- 1:11:29Speaker 5: on I may be so surrounded by tattooine rock face
- 1:11:34Speaker 5: that you won't even be able to see it all.
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: That's true, that's true, It's potentially true. But where do
- 1:11:42Speaker 4: you want people to find you as we close this out?
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: Where can people find you out there in the wilds
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: of the internet.
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: Well, one thing that I would love is because is
- 1:11:51Speaker 5: for you guys have crazy, cool fans who write in
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: all the time and who message all the time and
- 1:11:57Speaker 5: everything like that, and I love seeing it.
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: I love you. I love of.
- 1:12:00Speaker 5: Seeing you guys message the nerd party, message aggressive negotiations,
- 1:12:03Speaker 5: send emails, tweets, Facebook messages, and everything like that. You

- 1:12:08Speaker 5: of fans. My Twitter handle is at the inside Robin.
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: If you guys.
- 1:12:14Speaker 5: Remember seeing English in Luke's cockpit. I want to know, Like,
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: scour the internet for me, let me know if I'm
- 1:12:23Speaker 5: crazy or not.
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: I want to know.

- 1:12:58Speaker 4: find me at You know what, if you've listened at all,
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: you should know that you can find me as Kessel

- 1:13:14Speaker 4: speak with you, and I think it's time to close
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: these negotiations.
- 1:13:23Speaker 5: But do I get a seat on the council?
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: Join the Revolution, Join the Nerd Party.
