- 0:00Well, we did it. I asked, you answered,
- 0:03I'm responding. You remember recently I did a video and I said,
- 0:07you know what, I think the contemporary world just can't
- 0:11deal with real evil. There's evil that's
- 0:15irrational, unreasonable, untractable, whatever word you want to use,
- 0:19but you can't dialogue with it. You can't have a
- 0:23meeting with it, and you can't ask evil to behave. And why
- 0:26can't we all just get along.
- 0:30And happily, a lot of Christians know that. They take
- 0:34spiritual warfare seriously. And there's a whole lot of
- 0:38good information, some information,
- 0:42and a lot of resources for building up your
- 0:46spiritual immune system, for resisting
- 0:49evil, for praying against temptation, etc., etc.
- 0:53And some folks have drawn attention to what I call some
- 0:58of the more exotic forms of evil and some
- 1:02of the more dramatic ways of fighting against
- 1:06that more exotic evil. And while that's interesting and that's exciting,
- 1:10something really important is being
- 1:15overlooked. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention it,
- 1:18if I didn't tell you what I believe is Satan's
- 1:22biggest fear. Stay with me. I got a story to tell. Hi, I'm Jesuit
- 1:26Father Robert McCabe, your host every day here at the Catholic Current, coming to you
- 1:30from the Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network. Let's take a closer look.
- 1:34Glad you're here. Back in 1991, Anthony Hopkins,
- 1:38an actor whom I admire, starred in a movie called The Rite,
- 1:42R-I-T-E, and it was a Hollywood account of
- 1:45exorcism and possessions and so on. Anthony Hopkins plays, uh,
- 1:49the grizzled old exorcist, and I'll admit I have a special sympathy for
- 1:53grizzled old spiritual warriors. Well, there's a
- 1:57young man who's a transitional deacon. He's about to be ordained a priest.
- 2:01He's having a crisis of faith, and he starts working as
- 2:05an assistant to Father Anthony Hopkins. And this guy
- 2:08is really thinking about just chucking it all in, walking away.
- 2:12Well, suffice to say, Hollywood happens. The movie happens. There's drama,
- 2:17there's histrionics, and eventually the deacon
- 2:20recovers his faith. He's ordained a priest, and how the
- 2:24movie ends is outstanding. What does
- 2:28Father do? Young, newly ordained Father, seeing all that
- 2:32he's seen of the exotic and the most extreme forms of evil, you know what
- 2:36he does? He walks into his parish church,
- 2:40puts himself into the confessional, and starts to
- 2:43hear confessions. And that's how the movie
- 2:47ends. And I thought that was excellent because every expert,
- 2:52every saint, every pope would agree that the most
- 2:55reliable form of protection and warfare against spiritual
- 3:00evil, against the diabolical, is sacramental
- 3:04confession. Not often the stuff of very great high drama,
- 3:09but if we have our spiritual immune system boosted
- 3:13by that, we can break chains, we can get free.
- 3:17And people who I know who are in the business, so to speak,
- 3:21when someone presents with unusual symptoms,
- 3:25the first thing they do, their go-to
- 3:29is sacramental confession. Now, I would say that
- 3:33even though reports of exceptional dramatic displays
- 3:37of evil are on the rise, even if we take them at
- 3:40face value, that's still relatively rare.
- 3:45Rare. What 99.99999%
- 3:50of Catholics need to do is go to confession
- 3:54regularly. And unless you're
- 3:58living, I don't know, in, in China, or you're being hunted
- 4:02down in Nigeria, most Catholics have an
- 4:06opportunity to go to confession more than once
- 4:10a year. I know for some people, they think once a
- 4:14year is satisfactory or Lent and Advent.
- 4:18No, no, no. If you can go to confession once
- 4:22a month and you choose not to,
- 4:28I wouldn't want to be responsible for your soul. I just
- 4:32wouldn't. I don't see how a Catholic who's
- 4:36able to go to confession once a month and then chooses not
- 4:39to go once a month can say that he's serious about the
- 4:42faith. So absolute bare minimum,
- 4:47minimum spiritual hygiene is sacramental
- 4:51confession once a month, preceded of course by an honest
- 4:55examination of conscience. And I would like to see everybody step
- 5:00it up and go to confession twice a month. More often
- 5:04than that, consult with a spiritual director, with,
- 5:08or with your pastor. But barest possible minimum,
- 5:12once a month. Really regularly, twice a month.
- 5:16But wait, there's more, because discipleship isn't
- 5:20just about sin management, it's also about growth.
- 5:24And we can't grow spiritually if we
- 5:28don't cultivate the virtues. If we
- 5:32don't exercise self-control and intelligence and
- 5:36justice and charity and mercy,
- 5:41then we're useless in the war against evil.
- 5:45So we have some work to do. We need to
- 5:48find the nearest place where we can go to confession regularly. We need
- 5:52to find a good examination of conscience. And as part of our examination of conscience,
- 5:56we have to ask ourselves, What's the spiritual trash and excuse-making
- 6:01I need to get rid of? And what are the
- 6:04good things, the good seeds that need to be planted in my life?
- 6:08And then with God's grace, act accordingly.
- 6:13So this is my response to my— your response
- 6:17to my initial inquiries. Would you like to see more
- 6:21very practical, basic, the fundamentals
- 6:25of fighting this spiritual battle? Let me know in the comments section below or
- 6:30contact me at thestationofthecross.com/askfather.
- 6:34Meanwhile, think of these things today, take them to prayer, and talk about it
- 6:38with those you love. Go in peace, and please do pray for me, for I
- 6:42am a sinner.
