- 0:00Speaker 1: The In This League Podcast Network.
- 0:05Speaker 2: This is Dynasty Sports Life, a podcast about playing fantasy baseball, basketball, football,
- 0:11Speaker 2: and hockey.
- 0:12Speaker 1: 365 days a year.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Here's your host, Jesse Sevier. Welcome to the Dynasty Sports Life.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Jesse Sevier here with you to talk to you about
- 0:22Speaker 3: the wonderful world of Dynasty Fantasy Sports. Today, man, where
- 0:27Speaker 3: are we at in the dynasty sports landscape? Football has started.
- 0:31Speaker 3: It is rolling along. It should be through week three
- 0:34Speaker 3: as you listen to this. Hockey, you should be on
- 0:37Speaker 3: opening night. This episode will actually drop on opening night
- 0:42Speaker 3: of the NHL season, and I think NBA is under
- 0:46Speaker 3: two weeks away at this point, or about two weeks
- 0:48Speaker 3: a day. The NBA season is going to start off
- 0:51Speaker 3: in the middle of the afternoon this year, by the way,
- 0:53Speaker 3: which is bizarre but hilarious. And then we've got baseball,
- 0:58Speaker 3: which just wrapped up. Congratulations on your championship. Consolation on
- 1:03Speaker 3: your non-championships. And I hope your dynasty teams are all
- 1:08Speaker 3: geared and ready for the year to come. And today
- 1:12Speaker 3: we're going to talk about the Four Sport League. Our
- 1:14Speaker 3: league happens to end after the baseball season. So today
- 1:19Speaker 3: we're going to celebrate our newest champion in the Four
- 1:23Speaker 3: Sport League, and we've got both of them on. It's
- 1:26Speaker 3: a two-man team. It's the Detroit Sonics because one guy
- 1:30Speaker 3: is from Detroit and the other guy is from Seattle
- 1:32Speaker 3: and ready to bring back the Sonics.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Who knows?
- 1:34Speaker 3: That could be happening soon. And so we've got Tony Robinson,
- 1:39Speaker 3: we've got Danny Cumming coming on today to talk about
- 1:42Speaker 3: their Four Sport Championships. I'm extremely pleased to have on
- 1:54Speaker 3: this week the guys who together just won the four-sport
- 1:59Speaker 3: diesel championship. It is Danny Cumming and Tony Robinson. How
- 2:04Speaker 3: are you doing today, boys?
- 2:05Speaker 2: Great. Doing really good. It's good to talk to you.
- 2:09Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Let's go through it a little bit. I'll introduce each
- 2:13Speaker 3: of you to the audience because I know I've interacted
- 2:15Speaker 3: with both of you for years in different contexts and
- 2:18Speaker 3: just really pleased. You guys... have a lot to teach
- 2:21Speaker 3: us about both how you did what you did and
- 2:24Speaker 3: then the blind date type partnership that started this thing
- 2:28Speaker 3: that you guys have been very successful with. Danny, why
- 2:31Speaker 3: don't I start.
- 2:31Speaker 2: With you, man?
- 2:32Speaker 3: Tell people how you came about deciding you wanted to
- 2:36Speaker 3: be in a four sport league and a little bit
- 2:38Speaker 3: of your background there.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I probably 10 years ago, I started getting into
- 2:43Speaker 2: dynasty or keeper leagues. And from there I, always had
- 2:49Speaker 2: a thought or dream dream is the right word about
- 2:52Speaker 2: doing a multi-sport league and talking about it with friends
- 2:54Speaker 2: for years and heard about your league through in this
- 2:58Speaker 2: league podcast, probably through the years. And then when you
- 3:01Speaker 2: were talking about starting up the diesel, I was like,
- 3:04Speaker 2: Oh man, I, this sounds amazing. I have to put
- 3:07Speaker 2: in my resume. I think, I think I sent you
- 3:09Speaker 2: probably two or three pages on my resume at the time,
- 3:12Speaker 2: but yeah, I've, Love fantasy, love dynasty. I've been doing
- 3:16Speaker 2: it for decades now. And the opportunity to do something
- 3:20Speaker 2: like this, I thought, was once in a lifetime, frankly.
- 3:24Speaker 2: And I was really excited to be a part of it. Yeah, man.
- 3:28Speaker 3: No, we really appreciate it. You plugged right in. And
- 3:32Speaker 3: you guys have really kicked butt there, Danny. So how
- 3:35Speaker 3: about you, Tony? I know you came to us. Danny
- 3:38Speaker 3: kind of came, it sounds, maybe through the in-this-league side
- 3:41Speaker 3: of things. You were a Fantasy Hockey Life guy. You
- 3:43Speaker 3: were our lead scout for Fantasy Hockey Life. We plug
- 3:46Speaker 3: your name at the end of every show. Tell people
- 3:49Speaker 3: how you came about doing all this stuff.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Yeah, the same thing. I've been doing a lot of
- 3:53Speaker 1: fantasy sports around for years. My friends and I in
- 3:56Speaker 1: high school used to do it on paper and pencil
- 3:58Speaker 1: and look at the newspaper the day after the games
- 4:00Speaker 1: and get the stats and stuff. So I've been doing
- 4:03Speaker 1: it a long time. And I had to do a
- 4:05Speaker 1: four-sport league. It was pretty intriguing. Yeah, and hockey is
- 4:09Speaker 1: my big one. I liked it. And I hadn't done
- 4:10Speaker 1: basketball in a couple years, but I had, you know,
- 4:13Speaker 1: dabbled in it. So, yeah, I just figured I'd give
- 4:15Speaker 1: it a shot. And thanks to you put us together.
- 4:18Speaker 1: So any blame goes to Jesse for matching us up. And, yeah, no,
- 4:24Speaker 1: Danny's been really good to work with. So it's great.
- 4:27Speaker 3: One of the things that I always hear from people
- 4:29Speaker 3: who play I talk to about it. I won't say
- 4:32Speaker 3: necessarily recruit, but people I talk to about this are like, yeah,
- 4:35Speaker 3: I'd be great at this sport. I'd be great at
- 4:38Speaker 3: baseball and football, but man, I don't know anything about
- 4:41Speaker 3: basketball or I could probably do the basketball, but man,
- 4:44Speaker 3: I don't know anything about hockey. Then of course, from
- 4:46Speaker 3: the hockey side, I get the opposite. The hot guys
- 4:48Speaker 3: are ready to roll, but like who's following American football, man?
- 4:52Speaker 3: I got things to do with Twitter. So it's a
- 4:54Speaker 3: matter of sometimes having this, the partnership, like I kind
- 4:58Speaker 3: of teased, It was a blind date. I know, Danny,
- 5:01Speaker 3: you came in, and I think if I recall correctly,
- 5:03Speaker 3: you said, you're not quite sure about the hockey. I said,
- 5:06Speaker 3: I got just the guy for you. But how did
- 5:10Speaker 3: you approach that knowing, maybe we'll start with Danny again,
- 5:13Speaker 3: how you were going to be able to work with somebody,
- 5:16Speaker 3: how you felt comfortable about four sports going this far
- 5:20Speaker 3: into it?
- 5:21Speaker 2: What do you think? I was pretty nervous about the
- 5:24Speaker 2: idea of hockey. I live in Seattle, and so I've
- 5:27Speaker 2: watched hockey from afar until the Kraken came into existence
- 5:32Speaker 2: a handful of years ago now. So at the time
- 5:34Speaker 2: I was following it, I wanted to get into fantasy
- 5:36Speaker 2: because that's how I enjoy sports. But I knew that
- 5:40Speaker 2: I wasn't going to be strong in hockey. I knew
- 5:42Speaker 2: I would put in the work to get there eventually.
- 5:44Speaker 2: But when you said you've got a guy that's in
- 5:48Speaker 2: Tony that knows hockey really well, I was like, well,
- 5:50Speaker 2: that's exactly what I would need to do. round out
- 5:53Speaker 2: my significant gap, frankly, in hockey compared to the other sports.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Yeah, it's really good. And it sounds like you might've
- 6:01Speaker 3: been able, or you probably would have been able to
- 6:03Speaker 3: do it yourself. A lot of people, the thing I
- 6:06Speaker 3: always feared as a commissioner is you bring somebody in
- 6:08Speaker 3: who kind of, they're like, wow, yeah, I can do basketball.
- 6:11Speaker 3: I've got experience with people who just are, I can
- 6:14Speaker 3: do X sport. And then you find out, okay, you're,
- 6:17Speaker 3: you're three and 15 every year because, and you're not
- 6:20Speaker 3: really doing much, but set your lineup and that life
- 6:23Speaker 3: could be better than this. But anyway, over to Tony,
- 6:25Speaker 3: same concept here, man. What did you think about getting
- 6:28Speaker 3: into this multi-sport league and how you felt about all
- 6:31Speaker 3: these different sports?
- 6:33Speaker 1: Yeah, the same thing. Danny and I did have a
- 6:35Speaker 1: Zoom together just to feel things out, which went really well, obviously.
- 6:38Speaker 1: And then, yeah, so we just went from there and
- 6:41Speaker 1: We just talk to each other all the time and
- 6:43Speaker 1: we try not to, one of us overstep the other one,
- 6:46Speaker 1: even if it's in the sport that we think we're
- 6:48Speaker 1: weak at or we're strong at or whatever like that.
- 6:51Speaker 1: And so, yeah, I try to make sure that I
- 6:53Speaker 1: communicate with him. And I know to the chagrin of
- 6:56Speaker 1: probably a lot of the other people in the league
- 6:58Speaker 1: that run the teams themselves, they're like, hey, how about
- 7:00Speaker 1: this trade? I'm like, I have to talk to my
- 7:02Speaker 1: co-manager or co-GM and make sure that we buy off
- 7:05Speaker 1: on this because it's not a one-person team. which in
- 7:08Speaker 1: some cases may be advantageous in that situation, but other
- 7:11Speaker 1: ways it's not because you may rush into something. So
- 7:14Speaker 1: it's really good to have someone to talk stuff over
- 7:16Speaker 1: with in that.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I know.
- 7:19Speaker 3: You guys, I've got some of your trades written down.
- 7:21Speaker 3: We can talk about some of those a little bit later,
- 7:23Speaker 3: but you guys aren't afraid to make multi-sport trades. Some people,
- 7:26Speaker 3: if you approach them about a baseball player, they only
- 7:29Speaker 3: want to hear about baseball coming back. They don't want
- 7:31Speaker 3: to get into multi-sport. You guys have been less worried
- 7:35Speaker 3: about that. I do kind of gather... Both of you
- 7:37Speaker 3: know all the sports. You just maybe feel different levels
- 7:41Speaker 3: of comfort toward different sports just from the years you've
- 7:44Speaker 3: spent with them. But, yeah, how do those conversations go
- 7:47Speaker 3: with you guys? How do you get together? What are
- 7:49Speaker 3: those chats like with you guys?
- 7:52Speaker 2: That's funny. Tony, I don't even remember. Did we do
- 7:55Speaker 2: a Zoom at the very beginning when we first met?
- 7:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Okay.
- 7:59Speaker 1: He suggested it. We did a Zoom.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Okay.
- 8:01Speaker 1: And we're like, yeah, let's give this a shot.
- 8:03Speaker 2: But I remember right from– the first chats and when
- 8:07Speaker 2: we started working together we i felt like tony's a
- 8:10Speaker 2: really cool dude and i just said let's communicate over
- 8:14Speaker 2: communicate things and we'll kind of figure it out and
- 8:17Speaker 2: goodness that draft that lasted two months or whatever it
- 8:20Speaker 2: was was a really good way to learn how to
- 8:23Speaker 2: work together and and yeah we just chat how that
- 8:26Speaker 2: usually works we chat in discord and And so if
- 8:29Speaker 2: we're making a pick, each of us would say, Hey,
- 8:31Speaker 2: I'm looking at this or this and this position or
- 8:33Speaker 2: this team, or these are the guys I like. I
- 8:36Speaker 2: think we set up a shared Google sheet that we
- 8:38Speaker 2: were working on with each of the four sports, a
- 8:40Speaker 2: different tab in each one. And we would highlight the
- 8:43Speaker 2: guys that we each liked. And so as we're updating
- 8:46Speaker 2: the board together, which frankly was really helpful to have
- 8:50Speaker 2: two people tackling that instead of one, we, I don't know,
- 8:54Speaker 2: it clicked really easily. Tony's a really easy guy to
- 8:57Speaker 2: work with and, yeah it was obviously successful here and
- 9:01Speaker 2: year what three or four or whatever we just won
- 9:04Speaker 2: but yeah from the beginning it was so easy to
- 9:07Speaker 2: work together and it was all largely done just by
- 9:11Speaker 2: chatting in the discord together how about you what's.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Your yeah i would say the same thing yeah it's
- 9:15Speaker 1: good to be able to do stuff and especially the
- 9:17Speaker 1: sports themselves with the leagues i think the players that
- 9:21Speaker 1: are in league it's the prospects that was probably the
- 9:23Speaker 1: The most talking we did, especially again for me with basketball,
- 9:27Speaker 1: I barely watch any basketball except for Michigan or Michigan
- 9:31Speaker 1: State College. And I see it and stuff like that
- 9:34Speaker 1: because I'm online all the time. But yeah, so stuff
- 9:36Speaker 1: like that, I don't really know much about the prospects.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Danny really has that honed in and stuff like that.
- 9:42Speaker 1: So yeah, that's what we did. We just talked about
- 9:44Speaker 1: everything and kept going back and forth and The other
- 9:47Speaker 1: thing is in case for some reason one of us
- 9:49Speaker 1: wasn't available, that's also really helpful that we talked a
- 9:52Speaker 1: little bit ahead of time so people weren't waiting for
- 9:54Speaker 1: a draft or response on the trade or something like that.
- 9:56Speaker 2: So yeah. Yeah, really.
- 10:00Speaker 3: It's been amazing. The people, I don't, I'm trying to think,
- 10:03Speaker 3: I don't know if there's been a single group team
- 10:07Speaker 3: who started with this league who has dropped out. I
- 10:10Speaker 3: know there've been individuals who've left, but you guys just
- 10:13Speaker 3: started out as groups and luckily things seem to have
- 10:17Speaker 3: clicked between all the groups that.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Have been there.
- 10:19Speaker 3: You guys have been very effective. MGM, Marcus is on
- 10:22Speaker 3: here frequently. He's part of a three-man team. The two
- 10:25Speaker 3: of you have been extremely solid. So, yeah, I can
- 10:29Speaker 3: see that.
- 10:29Speaker 2: That's great.
- 10:30Speaker 3: You've got the Google Doc going behind the scenes. And
- 10:33Speaker 3: you're right, that first two-month draft, personally, it's a light
- 10:37Speaker 3: peak event to me, but it's also extremely grueling.
- 10:39Speaker 2: I feel the same. I still talk about it, and people,
- 10:42Speaker 2: friends that don't do Dynasty or they do one draft
- 10:45Speaker 2: a year, you explain, yeah, we were drafting for two months,
- 10:47Speaker 2: and people just go, how in the world don't you
- 10:50Speaker 2: have a, you've got a family, you've got a job,
- 10:52Speaker 2: how does that work? We fit it in.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Yeah, same thing. But when we did it, I was
- 10:55Speaker 1: on vacation up north with our families and stuff like that,
- 10:59Speaker 1: and I'm inside and everybody else is out at the
- 11:02Speaker 1: beach trying to get in the water and stuff. They're like,
- 11:05Speaker 1: what are you doing? I'm like, you're still drafting? I'm like, yes. Yes,
- 11:08Speaker 1: I'm still drafting. I still mention Four Sport League and
- 11:12Speaker 1: hardly anybody talks about it. No one else is like, what?
- 11:15Speaker 1: You do all four sports. It's a unicorn, I think.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:23Speaker 3: There's a couple people who come in who are part
- 11:25Speaker 3: of other Four Sport Leagues. There is something going on
- 11:28Speaker 3: out there. I don't know if any of the people
- 11:30Speaker 3: from Four sport leagues that I have no knowledge of
- 11:32Speaker 3: are listening to this somehow. But if you are, you
- 11:35Speaker 3: are people. We love you. Yeah, no. So when you
- 11:40Speaker 3: guys get something like a trade offer, how do you
- 11:44Speaker 3: process that between you? Obviously, some people might reach out
- 11:47Speaker 3: to Tony. Some might reach out to Danny. How do
- 11:51Speaker 3: you how do you work together through those types of things?
- 11:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I just, I usually, like I said, I'd look
- 11:57Speaker 1: at it. I usually respond to them and say, Hey,
- 11:59Speaker 1: I saw your trade offer and I have to talk
- 12:01Speaker 1: to Danny and we'll discuss it and see what we
- 12:02Speaker 1: think and either come back with a counter proposal or
- 12:06Speaker 1: accept it or whatever. But we usually talk first. And
- 12:09Speaker 1: then after that, we go back. Sometimes we go back
- 12:11Speaker 1: and forth. Sometimes it's like an immediate, like no or immediate.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Yes.
- 12:14Speaker 1: And we go from there. So that's just how we
- 12:16Speaker 1: do it. It seems the most fair and equal way
- 12:19Speaker 1: to do it.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Yeah. Why don't I jump to, I've got some of
- 12:24Speaker 3: your trades from the past few years. Cause again, we'll
- 12:27Speaker 3: talk about the season, but obviously we're coming, we're speaking
- 12:30Speaker 3: here on the aftermath of you guys winning the overall
- 12:33Speaker 3: four sport championship, the first non Kevin Victor in the
- 12:36Speaker 3: history of our league. And we'll talk later too. It
- 12:39Speaker 3: was a pretty remarkable run that got you there at
- 12:42Speaker 3: the end of the year. It was, it was really
- 12:45Speaker 3: an amazing feat, but let's see, you've got, I'm looking
- 12:48Speaker 3: one year in the past, Kyler Murray, You traded Kyler
- 12:52Speaker 3: Murray away for Baker Mayfield, a first-round pick in baseball,
- 12:56Speaker 3: a first-round pick in hockey, three-sport trade right there. That
- 13:00Speaker 3: probably worked out pretty well for you. I think this
- 13:02Speaker 3: was right before– actually, this is probably right after Kyler
- 13:06Speaker 3: got traded to the Vikings, isn't it?
- 13:08Speaker 1: I think he was still with Arizona, but he was
- 13:10Speaker 1: hurt or something, I think. Okay.
- 13:12Speaker 3: I just, I think.
- 13:14Speaker 2: It was last season. It's funny. You're mentioning all the trades.
- 13:17Speaker 2: I haven't reviewed them myself. So I'm just like, yeah,
- 13:20Speaker 2: I forgot. We got extra picks with that. I just
- 13:22Speaker 2: look at Mayfield and go, man, should we have gotten
- 13:25Speaker 2: more for, but we did get some number one. So that's, that's.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Oh yeah. Yeah.
- 13:29Speaker 3: First round pick. And you haven't even taken that. first
- 13:32Speaker 3: round pick in baseball yet. I just know Rankin loves
- 13:35Speaker 3: him some Vikings. So I was thinking maybe that's why
- 13:38Speaker 3: he got Connor Murray.
- 13:39Speaker 2: All right.
- 13:39Speaker 3: I remember this one, fellas. I remember this one because
- 13:42Speaker 3: this is the biggest trade you guys and us. This
- 13:45Speaker 3: might've been, I'm not sure. I tried to go through
- 13:48Speaker 3: the Discord to pull these. So it's possible I missed one,
- 13:51Speaker 3: but I know I didn't miss this one because this
- 13:53Speaker 3: was a heck of a one. I traded you guys,
- 13:55Speaker 3: Jack Campbell, linebacker, Hawkeye linebacker, but also a lion. Joel Hofer,
- 14:02Speaker 3: who's an up-and-coming goalie. Logan Stankoven, who I thought was
- 14:06Speaker 3: the prize, I think, with a low contract. Zachary Bolduc,
- 14:09Speaker 3: who's looking good now. And a late pick. And this
- 14:13Speaker 3: is when I got Evan Bouchard from you guys. I
- 14:16Speaker 3: needed that star D, and I got him. And Dan Vladar,
- 14:21Speaker 3: who turned out to be a lot better than I
- 14:23Speaker 3: was even expecting.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Devin Lloyd, Walker Jenkins, both of whom have come out
- 14:28Speaker 3: decent for me. So that was a lot of moving pieces.
- 14:31Speaker 3: I would not say that there was a winner or
- 14:32Speaker 3: loser for that trade. It was really more both of
- 14:36Speaker 3: us addressing strengths and weaknesses. But that's complicated. Did that
- 14:42Speaker 3: involve all four sports? I'm trying to see. Maybe there
- 14:44Speaker 3: wasn't a basketball piece. But there were definitely three sports involved.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Go back in time. Let me know what what was
- 14:51Speaker 3: going on at the other end of that, because all
- 14:53Speaker 3: I remember was it got quiet for a long time.
- 14:55Speaker 3: And then I think Tony was the one who came
- 14:57Speaker 3: back and said, we're going to need X, Y and Z.
- 15:00Speaker 3: And he turned down like I was like, OK, this
- 15:02Speaker 3: is a little more hardcore than what I thought was
- 15:04Speaker 3: going to happen. But yeah, Tony, what do you got there?
- 15:08Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I'm going to say my theory in trades
- 15:10Speaker 1: is it should benefit both teams. It's not always going
- 15:13Speaker 1: to because things turn out different, but I think they
- 15:15Speaker 1: should be. It shouldn't be someone needs to be a winner,
- 15:17Speaker 1: which some players play that way. I'm going to make
- 15:20Speaker 1: this trade and I have to have the best player.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I have to win the trade somehow. I think it
- 15:25Speaker 1: should be mutually beneficial for both teams. In this aspect,
- 15:29Speaker 1: because you have the four sports, it might be not
- 15:31Speaker 1: in the sport that you're thinking of, that you're making
- 15:33Speaker 1: the trade for or whatever, but it can cover more things.
- 15:35Speaker 1: So that's just the way I look at it. So
- 15:37Speaker 1: that's what happened. We needed some stuff, we needed some stuff,
- 15:39Speaker 1: and it worked out.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember we wanted Campbell pretty bad. We wanted
- 15:44Speaker 2: kind of an elite linebacker, and Lloyd was a good linebacker,
- 15:48Speaker 2: and we had to give up him to get a
- 15:50Speaker 2: better one maybe. And I remember we had... My strength,
- 15:55Speaker 2: I think, is in baseball. Tony's is obviously in hockey.
- 15:58Speaker 2: And we've been trying to trade out of the prospects
- 16:02Speaker 2: that we have. Our best depth is in the minors,
- 16:05Speaker 2: probably in those two sports. So anytime we can... trade
- 16:10Speaker 2: away prospects in baseball or hockey to improve our major
- 16:15Speaker 2: or league rosters, I guess you could say, is what
- 16:18Speaker 2: we've been trying to do for the last couple of years.
- 16:19Speaker 2: So it doesn't always work out. And yeah, that was
- 16:23Speaker 2: a pretty big trade in terms of pieces, but aligned
- 16:27Speaker 2: pretty well. And Tony said, I don't, we don't try
- 16:29Speaker 2: to win trades. In fact, I don't mind losing trades
- 16:32Speaker 2: if it hits a need that we're, we've been trying
- 16:34Speaker 2: to win the last couple of years. So if we're
- 16:36Speaker 2: losing a trade and giving up a good prospect to
- 16:38Speaker 2: fit a need in that roster for that season, I'm
- 16:41Speaker 2: okay with that. Yeah, for sure.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Yeah, no, that, that was good. And really, yeah, every
- 16:48Speaker 3: part of it, I know it sounded complex. Every part
- 16:50Speaker 3: of that trade kind of made sense. Most of them,
- 16:53Speaker 3: if one, if it was like you didn't want to
- 16:55Speaker 3: open up a hole. I was giving you the upgrade
- 16:58Speaker 3: on goalie. You were giving me the upgrade. I was
- 17:01Speaker 3: giving you the upgrade on linebacker. But then it was
- 17:04Speaker 3: all in service of getting Evan Bouchard for me. But
- 17:06Speaker 3: you guys got a lot of upgrades. And of course,
- 17:09Speaker 3: Logan Stanko, I think is going to be a steal,
- 17:11Speaker 3: a low contract. Maybe not last year yet, but he's
- 17:14Speaker 3: going to be. But yeah, no, a lot of the
- 17:17Speaker 3: other trades you went are a little bit more under
- 17:19Speaker 3: the radar. There's no kind of superstar involved in most
- 17:23Speaker 3: of these, but you guys haven't been shy to trade.
- 17:26Speaker 3: It sounds like you're not trying to necessarily win trades,
- 17:28Speaker 3: but you're also, you're making some depth trades to just
- 17:31Speaker 3: try to continue to be competitive. Do you like making trades?
- 17:35Speaker 3: Are you guys out there to deal? Do you get
- 17:37Speaker 3: a lot of nonsense offers that you have to push off?
- 17:40Speaker 3: What's the deal?
- 17:41Speaker 2: I think everyone gets nonsense offers, I think. That's fine.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I mean, I'm not a big fan of them, but
- 17:49Speaker 2: I think some people like to just throw out... That's
- 17:51Speaker 2: their way of introducing an idea or a player into
- 17:54Speaker 2: a conversation. So that's fine. But I think we... Honestly,
- 17:58Speaker 2: I think we struggle at making trades. And it's... I
- 18:02Speaker 2: think the complexity of sport for sports definitely contributes to that.
- 18:06Speaker 2: It's hard for us to, or at least for me
- 18:08Speaker 2: to wrap my brain around a linebacker versus a goalie
- 18:12Speaker 2: versus an outfield prospect in the minors and trying to
- 18:15Speaker 2: find the right value there so that you're not, it just, yeah,
- 18:19Speaker 2: it's hard to work all of that through. And then
- 18:22Speaker 2: between the two of us having to chat with multiple people,
- 18:24Speaker 2: sometimes it becomes a little bit slower. In baseball, we
- 18:28Speaker 2: were trying to make trades in the first couple of
- 18:29Speaker 2: months of the year and just struggled. We reached out
- 18:32Speaker 2: to half the teams in the league, trying to find
- 18:35Speaker 2: some bats to help our team and couldn't do it.
- 18:39Speaker 2: And we tried, it just didn't work out. And, and yeah,
- 18:42Speaker 2: it's frankly, it's time consuming, I think. And most of
- 18:45Speaker 2: us are in multiple leagues too. And so you get
- 18:47Speaker 2: multiple requests on a weekly basis or trade offers. And
- 18:50Speaker 2: so managing that I think is the hardest part for
- 18:54Speaker 2: any dynasty league and certainly a four sport too. Yeah,
- 18:58Speaker 2: I agree.
- 18:58Speaker 1: I'm not a, I'm not a trade at all costs
- 19:01Speaker 1: and trade to trade person. So yeah, I'd rather think
- 19:04Speaker 1: it through and like I said, get depth and stuff
- 19:06Speaker 1: like that to keep the team competitive.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:10Speaker 1: So that's, yeah, I wish I was more of a
- 19:12Speaker 1: trader sometimes because it might make things go faster for
- 19:15Speaker 1: the team to ramp up or whatever, but yeah, it's,
- 19:19Speaker 1: it works out and it just takes time.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:24Speaker 3: You talk about, this multi-sport you guys really had a
- 19:28Speaker 3: balance if you look at the team there were very
- 19:32Speaker 3: few I tried to go back through the history there
- 19:34Speaker 3: were very few times that you guys have been below
- 19:37Speaker 3: 500 in a sport so unlike some people and I
- 19:41Speaker 3: myself included I came in trying to push basketball and
- 19:45Speaker 3: hockey early I thought maybe there will be some opportunity
- 19:48Speaker 3: coming into the league with those sports and and for
- 19:50Speaker 3: baseball and football I've been hanging back but in the
- 19:53Speaker 3: overall that's certainly not helping me I'm climbing a little
- 19:56Speaker 3: bit because I'm at least able to get into the
- 19:58Speaker 3: middle ground in those but you guys have been pretty
- 20:00Speaker 3: consistently strong you're almost always between fourth and eighth place
- 20:04Speaker 3: in the regular season with a couple times that you've
- 20:06Speaker 3: jumped up to first in the regular season but I
- 20:09Speaker 3: You're not, your team is never at the bottom ever
- 20:13Speaker 3: in three years, it feels like. So there must be
- 20:15Speaker 3: a real commitment to trying to balance the teams and
- 20:18Speaker 3: be competitive with each one of them. Was that a
- 20:21Speaker 3: conscious thing that you weren't going to tank? You weren't
- 20:25Speaker 3: going to just be awful in a sport for multiple
- 20:29Speaker 3: years when you started this or even that? Has that
- 20:32Speaker 3: been part of your process?
- 20:35Speaker 1: I think so. I think we talked about that, that
- 20:36Speaker 1: we wanted to be competitive as much as we could. So, yeah,
- 20:40Speaker 1: I would agree with that, that we didn't want to
- 20:42Speaker 1: take on anything unless it really came to that for
- 20:44Speaker 1: some reason.
- 20:46Speaker 2: That was definitely our plan in the draft. We wanted
- 20:48Speaker 2: to not fall behind in anything. I think we knew
- 20:51Speaker 2: our strengths were in hockey and baseball. And going back,
- 20:55Speaker 2: I was looking at our draft the last couple of
- 20:57Speaker 2: days preparing for today. But in hindsight, I think maybe
- 21:02Speaker 2: we should have spent a little bit more capital on
- 21:05Speaker 2: in the NFL and NBA and in hindsight, because we are,
- 21:09Speaker 2: I think we, we are so strong there. We could
- 21:12Speaker 2: have found more value later and we probably should have
- 21:16Speaker 2: spent more on those sports in terms of capital, but
- 21:19Speaker 2: we were, the hope was to be competitive the whole
- 21:22Speaker 2: way through. And we got lucky, I think in the
- 21:25Speaker 2: NBA and got healthy this year, we didn't have very
- 21:28Speaker 2: many injuries. And so we kind of had a really
- 21:30Speaker 2: good regular season that compared to the last couple of
- 21:33Speaker 2: years that, that really helped us get over the top
- 21:36Speaker 2: in that sport. Yeah.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Let's take a quick break. We're going to come back
- 21:39Speaker 3: and talk more about that season. Back talking with Danny Cumming,
- 21:54Speaker 3: Tony Robinson of the great Four Sport League. our champions
- 21:59Speaker 3: and we're now laying them completely bare making them reveal
- 22:02Speaker 3: all of their secrets so that the rest of the
- 22:04Speaker 3: league that's listening can defeat them next year obviously the
- 22:07Speaker 3: secret subtext of having them on no not really you
- 22:10Speaker 3: were talking a little bit about basketball and now you
- 22:14Speaker 3: guys have won basketball in the past right it was
- 22:16Speaker 3: that two years ago you guys won basketball danny is
- 22:19Speaker 3: that right Am I remembering that wrong?
- 22:22Speaker 2: I don't think we won basketball. No. Okay. All right.
- 22:25Speaker 2: We won baseball a few times now.
- 22:27Speaker 3: You won baseball. Okay. But your basketball team has been
- 22:31Speaker 3: very successful. And you talked about you had a good
- 22:33Speaker 3: run of health last year. I got to be honest.
- 22:35Speaker 3: I look at the team and I'm not like this
- 22:38Speaker 3: is a team that should have rolled over everybody. But
- 22:40Speaker 3: it has been extremely strong over the years. You got
- 22:43Speaker 3: Mello and Tyrese. Dyson Daniels had that miracle season. Asar Thompson.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Bam at a bio. Jordan Poole has been very good
- 22:52Speaker 3: for some reason. A couple other guys. But yeah, no,
- 22:56Speaker 3: it doesn't seem overwhelming to me when I look at it.
- 22:59Speaker 3: You've even got, yeah, you've got some heavier contracts that
- 23:03Speaker 3: don't seem to do as Jordan Poole, for example, but
- 23:05Speaker 3: it's been very successful together. You guys, and you're after
- 23:08Speaker 3: my own heart because you're excellent in all the counting stats,
- 23:12Speaker 3: but you're awful in ratios, just like me.
- 23:15Speaker 2: We've had an ongoing ratio problem.
- 23:18Speaker 3: So yeah. So talk about the basketball. Is that a
- 23:21Speaker 3: little bit more you, Danny, or you said you're more
- 23:23Speaker 3: of the prospect basketball guy, but both of you guys
- 23:25Speaker 3: probably help handle the pros here, right?
- 23:29Speaker 2: Yeah, we work together on all of it, frankly, but yeah,
- 23:32Speaker 2: I think every year in the waivers, maybe the first waivers,
- 23:35Speaker 2: the beginning of the year, we usually get a player
- 23:37Speaker 2: or two that contributes. And I think what we had
- 23:40Speaker 2: more than anything last year was just 15 to 18
- 23:43Speaker 2: guys that we're happy to put in the lineup every day,
- 23:47Speaker 2: even though we, we're not real top heavy, frankly, but
- 23:50Speaker 2: Lomelo being healthy for most of the season really helped.
- 23:54Speaker 2: And yeah, just having guys we couldn't plug in on
- 23:57Speaker 2: a daily basis that get something is usually enough to
- 24:00Speaker 2: make the playoffs at least. And that's what we were
- 24:02Speaker 2: able to do with all the health. We, at one
- 24:05Speaker 2: point we were losing players because everyone was healthy and
- 24:09Speaker 2: we were having to figure out who to cut, which
- 24:11Speaker 2: is a great problem to have. But yeah, we were like,
- 24:14Speaker 2: there were like at one point, no guys on the IR,
- 24:16Speaker 2: which when you roster 20 guys in any sport is
- 24:19Speaker 2: pretty incredible. Yeah.
- 24:21Speaker 3: And especially like, In our contract league, what I've found
- 24:25Speaker 3: is I almost count on somebody being on the IL
- 24:27Speaker 3: because if everybody gets healthy, I can't afford it. I'm
- 24:31Speaker 3: usually running right up against the cap. You guys have
- 24:33Speaker 3: always left a little bit of space. At least in basketball,
- 24:35Speaker 3: I think you've had some space against the cap, which
- 24:37Speaker 3: has been advantageous because then if you do have to
- 24:40Speaker 3: drop somebody, in our league what goes on is if
- 24:43Speaker 3: you drop somebody, you get 100% of their cap hit
- 24:46Speaker 3: for the rest of their NBA contract. unless you perform
- 24:49Speaker 3: a buyout, which you get two outs a year. When
- 24:51Speaker 3: they're on the IL, you don't have to count their
- 24:53Speaker 3: contract at all. You're in better shape almost when somebody
- 24:56Speaker 3: gets shut down. We can get into the other teams,
- 24:59Speaker 3: but I can't help it. I want to talk about
- 25:01Speaker 3: this last season because here is how you guys did this.
- 25:05Speaker 3: You got in playoffs in all four sports. Obviously, that
- 25:10Speaker 3: made a big difference. In two of the sports, you
- 25:12Speaker 3: had buys. I think you didn't in football, but you
- 25:15Speaker 3: did in basketball and hockey, if I'm right. You did
- 25:18Speaker 3: not win a playoff matchup through three sports. You lost
- 25:22Speaker 3: in the first round, as far as I can tell,
- 25:24Speaker 3: in all three of football, basketball, and hockey. And then
- 25:29Speaker 3: in baseball, you qualified for the playoffs by one game
- 25:34Speaker 3: in the last week. You beat me 7-3 to get
- 25:38Speaker 3: in the playoffs, whereas the other guy who finished right
- 25:40Speaker 3: behind you had a 1-7-2 matchup to fall behind you.
- 25:44Speaker 3: And then you went on a miracle run to win
- 25:46Speaker 3: baseball this year. and the overall four sport, quite the twofer.
- 25:51Speaker 3: I don't know, start with Danny here. That baseball run
- 25:56Speaker 3: was something else. That's kind of one of your favorite sports.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Yeah, we've had a kind of an aging roster. We've got,
- 26:02Speaker 2: we had Mookie Betts, we've got Yelich, Eugenio Suarez, a
- 26:06Speaker 2: bunch of older guys on the team and the hitting side,
- 26:09Speaker 2: at least. And we knew we were going to need
- 26:11Speaker 2: some younger bats. We tried to trade for first base
- 26:14Speaker 2: bats and corner and outfield bats this year. And it just,
- 26:17Speaker 2: like I said earlier, it didn't work out, but we
- 26:20Speaker 2: were on, on the cusp of the playoffs all season long.
- 26:24Speaker 2: We knew we had to beat Kevin and Wakanak, I
- 26:27Speaker 2: think is the other team that we need, we need
- 26:29Speaker 2: to be ahead of them going into to win the overall.
- 26:31Speaker 2: And we just couldn't get over the hump. And they
- 26:35Speaker 2: were one and two, I think most of the season
- 26:37Speaker 2: we were And at some point that last week of
- 26:40Speaker 2: the season, I can't remember who we were looking at
- 26:42Speaker 2: on the waiver wire, but we were just chatting, the
- 26:45Speaker 2: two of us, and we were almost given up. We
- 26:47Speaker 2: were like, should we even, should we grab this guy
- 26:50Speaker 2: or off waivers instead? Because this is more of a
- 26:52Speaker 2: next year play because we were close to not making
- 26:55Speaker 2: the playoffs. And we got frankly, pretty lucky to get in,
- 27:00Speaker 2: to sneak into that sixth seed. But the team did
- 27:03Speaker 2: start playing very well, obviously during the playoffs to take
- 27:06Speaker 2: us all the way to the end.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Yeah, we both thought, when I show off my computer,
- 27:10Speaker 1: I think the last night or the second to last
- 27:12Speaker 1: night of the season, like, okay, that was fun. We
- 27:15Speaker 1: didn't make it and whatever and all that kind of stuff.
- 27:17Speaker 1: And then I looked at the computer the next day,
- 27:19Speaker 1: I'm like, hey, wait a second, we're in. So yeah,
- 27:22Speaker 1: it was pretty amazing. Yeah, we had a lot of
- 27:24Speaker 1: injuries at the beginning of the year, and we were
- 27:25Speaker 1: trying to trade out of that, and we couldn't get
- 27:27Speaker 1: anything done. So yeah, we got pretty lucky, I would say,
- 27:30Speaker 1: on that. Good work by both Danny and I, but still,
- 27:34Speaker 1: it was a little bit of luck involved there, I think.
- 27:37Speaker 3: And I want everybody to know I was playing hard
- 27:39Speaker 3: that last week of the season. I was not slacking off.
- 27:42Speaker 2: I pushed Tony.
- 27:43Speaker 3: The first time I remember Tony was in hockey when
- 27:46Speaker 3: I was trying to get into the playoffs in the
- 27:48Speaker 3: last week of the season. And Tony was playing out
- 27:51Speaker 3: the string that year. He had a rebuilding team. And
- 27:53Speaker 3: he played his butt off.
- 27:56Speaker 1: And I forget.
- 27:57Speaker 3: He might have beat me. And I always remember that.
- 28:00Speaker 3: And I always remarked on it. I admire somebody who's
- 28:03Speaker 3: going to play spoiler when they're eliminated in a league.
- 28:07Speaker 3: Because so many people just won't do it. And it
- 28:09Speaker 3: is such, having competitive people who are going to do
- 28:13Speaker 3: the right thing and keep setting their lineup is such
- 28:15Speaker 3: a big deal to me. And that's the first I
- 28:17Speaker 3: remember of you, Tony. And I probably, I keep talking
- 28:20Speaker 3: about it on podcasts because it is the time that
- 28:22Speaker 3: I really noticed it. But yeah, I tried to return
- 28:25Speaker 3: the favor by playing you hard, but you guys were
- 28:28Speaker 3: too good at that point and got yourselves in. But yeah,
- 28:32Speaker 3: what a season then to come out on top because
- 28:34Speaker 3: that ain't easy in this league. So it was really
- 28:39Speaker 3: an amazing run. Yeah, so we talked a little bit
- 28:43Speaker 3: about your basketball season. Or no, we talked a little
- 28:45Speaker 3: bit about your baseball season. We've talked a little bit
- 28:48Speaker 3: about your basketball team. Football usually lags a little bit
- 28:53Speaker 3: behind for you guys. And in football, I think you
- 28:57Speaker 3: did not have a bye. You were a little bit
- 28:58Speaker 3: lower in the ranks there. But what's been your approach
- 29:02Speaker 3: in football? How are things looking there? Tony, you want
- 29:05Speaker 3: to start?
- 29:06Speaker 1: Yeah, we tried to, again, tried to be pretty balanced.
- 29:09Speaker 1: I think the defense, the IDP, because I have not
- 29:12Speaker 1: played a lot of that and I don't think Danny
- 29:13Speaker 1: has either. That was when the draft was hard for
- 29:16Speaker 1: us and then also getting started in the first couple
- 29:19Speaker 1: years trying to figure out what the trade things are
- 29:22Speaker 1: for equal and all that kind of value and all
- 29:24Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. We didn't really chase after superstars necessarily.
- 29:28Speaker 1: We just wanted good players that played and stuff like that.
- 29:31Speaker 1: So we've been hurt a little bit by the injury
- 29:33Speaker 1: bug sometimes too, but I think that's our football is
- 29:36Speaker 1: just again try to be balanced as we can and
- 29:38Speaker 1: not necessarily have to have a superstar player but get
- 29:41Speaker 1: somebody that's a good player that plays well and is
- 29:44Speaker 1: healthy a lot of time and that's why we got
- 29:46Speaker 1: rid of murray because he was hurt i think so
- 29:49Speaker 1: yeah that's our main focus i think.
- 29:52Speaker 2: I think in general, I think in football, neither of
- 29:56Speaker 2: us had played an IDP league, as Tony said, and
- 29:59Speaker 2: we didn't draft very well for it looking back at
- 30:01Speaker 2: it at all. But we did a good job of,
- 30:03Speaker 2: I think, building a pretty strong IDP roster just through waivers,
- 30:08Speaker 2: just through burning and turning those spots, trying to find
- 30:12Speaker 2: guys through the years. And that really helped us because
- 30:15Speaker 2: we haven't been strong on offense. We had functional quarterbacks maybe,
- 30:19Speaker 2: but We've been weak at running back outside of Kyron Williams.
- 30:23Speaker 2: We haven't had much success at wide receiver either. And
- 30:27Speaker 2: we drafted older wide receivers in the startup too, Amari Cooper, Diggs.
- 30:32Speaker 2: So yeah, we've struggled. And frankly, we're one in three
- 30:35Speaker 2: in the new season already.
- 30:36Speaker 1: The darn median team.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Yeah, we're definitely a ways away from getting back into
- 30:43Speaker 2: the playoffs at this point. But because we were... did
- 30:47Speaker 2: well on the IDP side, I think that really was
- 30:49Speaker 2: enough to get over the hump and make it into
- 30:51Speaker 2: the playoffs and what you really needed to do to
- 30:53Speaker 2: win the overall, you can't really drop below a playoff
- 30:56Speaker 2: team to compete.
- 30:59Speaker 3: I think there's the, yeah, the IDP thing. And I
- 31:02Speaker 3: love IDP and probably a lot of people are like,
- 31:05Speaker 3: we really have to do this IDP thing. But the
- 31:07Speaker 3: thing with IDP is I'm not sure even everybody is
- 31:11Speaker 3: adjusted or, maybe they've adjusted, but they haven't been able
- 31:14Speaker 3: to adjust the rosters to recognize the importance of the
- 31:17Speaker 3: IDP in, in that league, because a whole lot of
- 31:21Speaker 3: your points are, I don't, I should compute this at
- 31:24Speaker 3: some point, but I bet half the points or close
- 31:26Speaker 3: to half the points are computed from your IDP side,
- 31:29Speaker 3: because you almost need everybody on your IDP side to
- 31:33Speaker 3: get you nine, 10 points every week for you to
- 31:36Speaker 3: be competitive, or that's what the most competitive teams are doing.
- 31:40Speaker 3: And if you're focusing on scrapping for the running back,
- 31:42Speaker 3: who's going to get you seven points instead of five
- 31:44Speaker 3: and ignoring the IDP is not going to work. So yeah,
- 31:48Speaker 3: you guys definitely adjusted to that and were able to
- 31:50Speaker 3: overcome even some people who've played a bunch of IDP
- 31:53Speaker 3: in the past. That is pretty good. And still what's
- 31:56Speaker 3: the shame if that's the weakest of the four teams
- 31:58Speaker 3: you have, that's still making the playoffs.
- 32:00Speaker 1: What the heck?
- 32:01Speaker 3: That's, that's some pretty good stuff. What, what about, let's see,
- 32:05Speaker 3: what about hockey? Tony, that's, that's your baby. And again,
- 32:08Speaker 3: Tony is our lead scout. You're grinding tape all the
- 32:11Speaker 3: time looking at these prospects and stuff. How have you
- 32:13Speaker 3: felt about your hockey work?
- 32:16Speaker 1: I think pretty good. There's always room for improvement. The
- 32:18Speaker 1: prospect stuff, I think watching some of the tape has
- 32:20Speaker 1: helped because they really didn't have access to stat and
- 32:23Speaker 1: that kind of stuff before. So more of that was
- 32:25Speaker 1: just watching games. And I do live in an area
- 32:28Speaker 1: where there's a ton of hockey. Michigan has every level
- 32:31Speaker 1: of hockey you can think of. It has good high school.
- 32:34Speaker 1: It has college. It's got USHL, OHL. It doesn't have
- 32:41Speaker 1: AHL anymore, but yeah. Oh, it's got the Griffins. Yeah,
- 32:44Speaker 1: I forgot about the Griffins. Yeah, so AHL and NHL.
- 32:46Speaker 1: So it's got it all. And yeah, I've just been
- 32:48Speaker 1: following it my whole life. Grew up a Montreal Canadiens
- 32:51Speaker 1: and Detroit Red Wings fan. And yeah, I just try
- 32:54Speaker 1: to watch as much as I can. And again, try
- 32:57Speaker 1: to pick out players that maybe, again, aren't superstars, but
- 33:00Speaker 1: are decent and play all the time and put up
- 33:03Speaker 1: maybe some more of the peripheral stats, hit some blocks
- 33:06Speaker 1: and that kind of thing, shots on goal. instead of
- 33:09Speaker 1: necessarily always chasing goals. And I will confess, I am
- 33:13Speaker 1: a goalie nerd. I love goalies. So I always want
- 33:18Speaker 1: to get the best goalies I can get for the team.
- 33:22Speaker 1: So yeah, I think we're doing pretty good. But again,
- 33:25Speaker 1: I think we can improve too.
- 33:27Speaker 3: Yeah, you're sitting there with Jacob Fowler in your minors system.
- 33:30Speaker 3: That's about to happen. But yeah, I know you guys
- 33:34Speaker 3: have had a formidable hockey team. And The contract element
- 33:38Speaker 3: of it in three of the four sports, everything but football,
- 33:40Speaker 3: because those football people are freaking crazy. Who knows what
- 33:42Speaker 3: their salaries are? That's even beyond, I think, what is
- 33:46Speaker 3: even fun to play. But you guys, yeah, the contracts
- 33:49Speaker 3: of Pavel Zaka, insane value for that. Stankoven, I think,
- 33:53Speaker 3: will be. Lane Hudson and Darren Radish are really on
- 33:57Speaker 3: below market contracts. Zach Wierenski is now compared to what
- 34:01Speaker 3: was jumping up in the league. And then to throw
- 34:04Speaker 3: Mikko Rantanen And Nathan McKinnon on top of that, obviously
- 34:08Speaker 3: it makes sense why you guys are sitting good in
- 34:11Speaker 3: that sport.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:12Speaker 3: So maybe we should talk about what have been some
- 34:15Speaker 3: of your favorite moves over the history of the league.
- 34:18Speaker 3: Can you think of any times or maybe moments over
- 34:22Speaker 3: the three-year history that that really kind of go back
- 34:25Speaker 3: to you. I see a look of recognition maybe on
- 34:27Speaker 3: Danny's face here. Why don't we, why don't we start
- 34:29Speaker 3: with him?
- 34:30Speaker 2: All I think about are all the moves we didn't
- 34:32Speaker 2: make or all the mistakes we've made, but yeah, we've
- 34:35Speaker 2: had some good success and obviously Tony's made a ton
- 34:39Speaker 2: of great moves and pickups in hockey, but our baseball
- 34:41Speaker 2: roster is we've drafted pretty well after the initial draft,
- 34:44Speaker 2: we drafted prospects pretty well. we've also taken it like
- 34:48Speaker 2: just in baseball this year, we needed help at first
- 34:51Speaker 2: base and we picked up Rumfeld on waivers, which is
- 34:54Speaker 2: not a great first baseman, but he was in the
- 34:57Speaker 2: lineup every day and put up numbers and was a
- 34:59Speaker 2: good OBP guy. So just little moves like that. I think,
- 35:03Speaker 2: I don't know that Tony and I have ever really
- 35:05Speaker 2: talked about it officially, but we're just trying to find
- 35:08Speaker 2: good players that are playing and creating a team with
- 35:11Speaker 2: a lot of depth. And I think we're both good
- 35:14Speaker 2: at finding players. those types of guys and it doesn't
- 35:16Speaker 2: have to be superstars, but Rumfeld really helped us this
- 35:19Speaker 2: year looking through our roster here. I don't know. We got,
- 35:23Speaker 2: I think we got Tole on waivers at the end
- 35:26Speaker 2: a couple of years ago when he first got his
- 35:28Speaker 2: call up, he wasn't on a, wasn't on a team
- 35:32Speaker 2: or wasn't rostered. And so when he called up, we
- 35:34Speaker 2: won him in a waiver bid, but little moves like
- 35:37Speaker 2: that are essentially free additions to your team. I think
- 35:42Speaker 2: we've done a pretty good job of finding those types
- 35:44Speaker 2: of guys.
- 35:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I'd agree with that. Yeah, I can't think of
- 35:49Speaker 1: anything in particular right now because it's all, it's constant motion.
- 35:52Speaker 1: So you don't get much time to look back and
- 35:56Speaker 1: see what we've done. So it's just kind of keep
- 35:58Speaker 1: moving forward in my opinion. So I just try to
- 36:00Speaker 1: keep going and try to make best moves again that
- 36:03Speaker 1: keep our team balanced deep and can compete.
- 36:07Speaker 3: Well, this, yeah, this has been, yeah, again, an amazing
- 36:11Speaker 3: season and you guys well-earned for the consistent team strength
- 36:15Speaker 3: that you guys have had over several years now and
- 36:18Speaker 3: your balance and continue to be competitive throughout well-earned, even
- 36:22Speaker 3: if it was a miracle run at the end that
- 36:25Speaker 3: got you there, the overall title this year. And a couple,
- 36:28Speaker 3: I think you've had, again, a couple of individual sport
- 36:31Speaker 3: titles also over the course of the years. So it
- 36:34Speaker 3: hasn't just all been make the playoffs. You guys have
- 36:37Speaker 3: had some breakthrough.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Wins as well.
- 36:39Speaker 3: I don't know how much of the audience has never
- 36:42Speaker 3: played a four sport league or never tried a partnership
- 36:45Speaker 3: if they feel weak in some areas or strong in
- 36:48Speaker 3: some areas is there any advice that you guys would
- 36:51Speaker 3: give to somebody who's maybe on the fence about joining
- 36:54Speaker 3: a poor sport league on the fence about strategy or
- 36:58Speaker 3: taking on a partner that you you'd like to share
- 37:01Speaker 3: with them daniel let's start with you what would you
- 37:03Speaker 3: tell people who are thinking about something like.
- 37:04Speaker 2: This I think having a teammate has really helped. I
- 37:08Speaker 2: think it's, we're all in a lot of leagues. You,
- 37:10Speaker 2: I think most of us are, if you're looking at
- 37:12Speaker 2: a force feed for sport, you're a, you're in a
- 37:15Speaker 2: bunch of leagues and it can be a burden. Frankly,
- 37:18Speaker 2: the lineup setting is relatively easy, but responding to trades,
- 37:22Speaker 2: doing the research, having someone to chat with and communicate
- 37:25Speaker 2: and bounce ideas off of, I think has really helped
- 37:28Speaker 2: both of us. And we've, I don't think either of
- 37:31Speaker 2: us have real big egos and we, the way we've communicate,
- 37:34Speaker 2: we're giving options. If we're in a draft, here's three
- 37:37Speaker 2: or four guys. Here's who are you looking at? And
- 37:40Speaker 2: we can, between the two of us come up with
- 37:42Speaker 2: a consensus. And most of those picks are in general
- 37:45Speaker 2: have been pretty successful, but I think having a teammate
- 37:50Speaker 2: really helps. And I would, it, I can't imagine doing
- 37:54Speaker 2: this without a teammate, and it would be just a
- 37:57Speaker 2: lot to handle, especially with vacations, travel, you're sick, things
- 38:01Speaker 2: like that. Having a teammate to handle all of that
- 38:04Speaker 2: really helps.
- 38:04Speaker 3: How about you, Tony?
- 38:07Speaker 1: Any thoughts? I'd say the same thing. I never really
- 38:10Speaker 1: thought about a co-GM or anything before. And with this, though,
- 38:13Speaker 1: it's definitely made a difference. And I'm recommending it whenever
- 38:16Speaker 1: I talk to somebody, even in regular redrafts on Yahoo
- 38:19Speaker 1: and stuff like that. Hey, if you don't think you
- 38:21Speaker 1: can do this or you don't think you have enough
- 38:23Speaker 1: time to do this, invite a co-GM. It's very helpful.
- 38:26Speaker 1: You got to know somebody else or maybe I could
- 38:28Speaker 1: recommend somebody for somebody that, you know, in a certain sport,
- 38:31Speaker 1: they could help somebody out or something like that. But yeah,
- 38:33Speaker 1: I think it's made all the difference in the world,
- 38:36Speaker 1: I think so.
- 38:38Speaker 3: Yeah, and I know when we started, I kind of
- 38:41Speaker 3: tried to pull people to say, because I was getting
- 38:43Speaker 3: so much of this, I'd love to play, but I
- 38:46Speaker 3: don't feel strong at X sport. And I don't remember,
- 38:48Speaker 3: I think, Dan, you came to me at first, and
- 38:51Speaker 3: I don't think you said you were weak in any sport,
- 38:53Speaker 3: but you were like, I'm going to have to learn
- 38:55Speaker 3: and kind of get back into such and such sport.
- 38:57Speaker 3: And I was like, I got the guy for you.
- 39:00Speaker 3: And so I kind of plugged, because really, honestly, the
- 39:03Speaker 3: general pool, like the in this league type pool of,
- 39:06Speaker 3: fantasy or dynasty sports players who listen to multiple different
- 39:10Speaker 3: sports stuff, it's hockey usually. And then beyond that, it's
- 39:13Speaker 3: basketball that people feel weaker at is what I find.
- 39:17Speaker 3: And so that fantasy hockey life pipeline, I think I
- 39:20Speaker 3: came to Tony second. I was like, Hey man, would
- 39:22Speaker 3: you be interested in playing? I've got a guy who's
- 39:24Speaker 3: going to be really good, but he probably needs somebody
- 39:27Speaker 3: to supplement the hockey knowledge. And luckily I didn't even
- 39:29Speaker 3: know you had knowledge for the other sports as well.
- 39:32Speaker 3: So you were able to really bring a balance across sports.
- 39:35Speaker 3: But that was really cool. And I'm glad that because
- 39:38Speaker 3: I get the feeling you guys are confident now in
- 39:41Speaker 3: all the sports because of the way. you've worked at
- 39:43Speaker 3: it and you should be because you make the playoffs
- 39:45Speaker 3: in all the sports.
- 39:45Speaker 2: Yeah. I hope I was upfront about my lack of
- 39:48Speaker 2: hockey knowledge in the beginning, what I applied to, to
- 39:51Speaker 2: be in, but I also hadn't played keeper dynasty basketball
- 39:55Speaker 2: on this level. And this is an, even if you've
- 39:57Speaker 2: played sports or these other sports doing a 12 team
- 40:01Speaker 2: redraft league or a keeper league versus an 18 team
- 40:04Speaker 2: dynasty league is completely different. So, um, It's it is
- 40:08Speaker 2: a learning experience. And I'd played points leagues and basketball, too.
- 40:11Speaker 2: So this was another transition to category based. Yeah, it's
- 40:15Speaker 2: a transition. But if you like this sort of stuff
- 40:18Speaker 2: like this is fun, right? Like this is the fun stuff.
- 40:21Speaker 2: Learning how to. Oh, cool. I need to look at
- 40:23Speaker 2: my ratios and be concerned about free throw percentages. I
- 40:26Speaker 2: don't know. For me, that stuff is fun. And that's
- 40:28Speaker 2: probably why we enjoy this sort of thing. Yeah.
- 40:32Speaker 3: Tremendous stuff, guys. I really appreciate your being willing to
- 40:35Speaker 3: come on and talk a little bit about your process.
- 40:37Speaker 3: I hope that people will get interested and do this stuff,
- 40:40Speaker 3: but you make a great point about it is a
- 40:42Speaker 3: 365 day a year type of grind. And if you
- 40:47Speaker 3: don't set your lineups for a while, you're going to
- 40:49Speaker 3: hear from me in this league, especially if I can
- 40:52Speaker 3: keep up enough to catch you because we got to
- 40:55Speaker 3: have that. So you guys, it's nice to never have
- 40:57Speaker 3: to worry about that with you guys. So Yeah, man.
- 41:00Speaker 3: Thank you so much for coming on. Congratulations on your victory.
- 41:03Speaker 3: I know the whole league is congratulating you on it
- 41:06Speaker 3: because it's an amazing accomplishment. And yeah, good luck, but
- 41:11Speaker 3: not as much luck as me in the coming year.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Yeah, glad we could finally beat Kevin.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Yeah it wouldn't.
- 41:18Speaker 3: Be so poor kevin he didn't even win this time
- 41:21Speaker 3: and he's still catching strays all the guy does is
- 41:24Speaker 3: win but sometimes that's what it takes to get a
- 41:27Speaker 3: hard time put on you give.
- 41:28Speaker 1: You someone to shoot for right you need somebody to
- 41:30Speaker 1: chase after so he inspired us so yeah we can
- 41:34Speaker 1: inspire the rest.
- 41:36Speaker 3: I've i've said it before and all kidding kevin's the
- 41:39Speaker 3: best dynasty player i've ever seen and like he didn't
- 41:42Speaker 3: know anything about football when he started this or hockey
- 41:45Speaker 3: when he joined this league.
- 41:46Speaker 2: Wow. That just makes me feel sick, frankly.
- 41:51Speaker 3: I knew him from basketball. I've been in a basketball
- 41:53Speaker 3: league with him since 2015. And then I brought him
- 41:56Speaker 3: over to a baseball league, which he's now won four
- 41:59Speaker 3: years or something like that, that started from 30 team,
- 42:02Speaker 3: a hundred player roster league that he's won all these years.
- 42:07Speaker 3: And I was like, we're bringing him in, but, he's
- 42:10Speaker 3: going to win. So I, you love playing the best
- 42:13Speaker 3: competition though. And Kevin's always going to be that, but
- 42:16Speaker 3: this year you guys are the best competition. Congratulations to you.
- 42:20Speaker 1: Thanks.
- 42:21Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 42:25Speaker 3: Fun times. I love both of these guys. First time
- 42:32Speaker 3: I've ever spoken by audio video with either one of them,
- 42:36Speaker 3: but I feel like I've known them. I have known
- 42:38Speaker 3: them for quite.
- 42:38Speaker 2: A while now.
- 42:39Speaker 3: So I hope you enjoyed that talk. I hope you
- 42:42Speaker 3: will consider boosting this episode by going out to X
- 42:47Speaker 3: or blue sky. That's D Y N sports life. That
- 42:51Speaker 3: is Jesse severe and blue sky and retweeting it. Why not?
- 42:56Speaker 3: And liking it, go and give a nice rating and review.
- 42:59Speaker 3: This will be, we won't have another episode next week
- 43:02Speaker 3: because I'm going to be on vacation, but we'll be
- 43:05Speaker 3: looking to come back strong in two weeks and, You
- 43:09Speaker 3: can listen to Fantasy Hockey Life if you miss me
- 43:12Speaker 3: because we're always talking fantasy hockey there. We made it
- 43:14Speaker 3: all the way to the regular season. If you want
- 43:16Speaker 3: to know how insane we are over there, we did
- 43:18Speaker 3: 32 team previews with beat writers or others who are, yeah,
- 43:24Speaker 3: basically beat writers or normal columnists on teams getting the
- 43:28Speaker 3: lowdown each individual team, each individual week. And then we
- 43:31Speaker 3: did kind of two summary episodes that are dropping this week.
- 43:36Speaker 3: And You can also follow my work at Baseball HQ.
- 43:40Speaker 3: I've done a couple articles actually this fall, and I'll
- 43:43Speaker 3: be looking to contribute to the Minor League Baseball Analyst.
- 43:46Speaker 3: That's something I'm working on right now for this winter.
- 43:50Speaker 3: Thank you for listening, everybody. Appreciate your listening once again
- 43:54Speaker 3: to Dynasty Sports Life, and until next time, good luck
- 43:57Speaker 3: in all your Dynasty fantasy leagues.
