- 0:41Speaker 1: The a B. Hey, welcome to Dave's show today. Probably
- 1:03a very short show. Actually, we're just going to wrap
- 1:05up the topic we've been discussing. I guess now for
- 1:09what five days proposed Arrago's exhaustive Catechism of the Catholic Church.
- 1:15But first let's turn to radio replies, where the questioner, well,
- 1:22I guess I would say, states, definitely isn't a question.
- 1:26But he says, if one has to be a Catholic
- 1:29to get to heaven, I shall be glad to stay outside.
- 1:34And they answered that as an absurd, absurd statement, for
- 1:37there is no eternal happiness outside of heaven. But I
- 1:40understand what you mean. You believe that the Catholic Church
- 1:42to be wrong, and you will not do what you
- 1:44believe to be evil that good may come. It's a
- 1:49very charitable take on that. I have actually spoken with
- 1:56several anti Catholics who will literally say, if the only
- 2:00way to go to heaven is to be Catholic, I'd
- 2:02rather go to hell. And they mean it. They hate
- 2:07the church that was founded by Jesus Christ. They hate
- 2:09Christ and his church that much, while professing to love
- 2:14him mainly, they when it comes to down they hate Catholics,
- 2:20forget the Church. They hate you and me so much
- 2:23they don't want to spend attornity with us. And I'm
- 2:25not kidding. That's not an uncommon sentiment among anti Catholic
- 2:31so called Christian Protestants. They will literally say, if the
- 2:35Catholic Church is right, I want to go to Hell.
- 2:38I don't want to have anything to do with Jesus,
- 2:40nothing to do with God the Father, or the Holy Spirit.
- 2:45They would rather spend eternity in hell than with Catholics.
- 2:50And it's a matter of pride. I mean, that's actually
- 2:53what Satan said. He said he would rather rule than
- 2:56in hell than serve in heaven. They literally take in
- 3:00the Satanic position of saying, if the Catholic Church is right,
- 3:04they would choose Hell over God and what he has instituted.
- 3:10They would literally choose to be spenitrinity with demons and
- 3:14the damned and with Catholics. I'm telling you, I don't
- 3:21know how much certain people think things through, but there's
- 3:25a lot of really messed up stuff on the Protestant
- 3:29side of the coin, a lot of really anti well,
- 3:34what we call Antichrist teachings and sentiment. People who literally
- 3:39hate their fellow Christians so much that if they have
- 3:43to accept their denomination is true, they would rather go
- 3:46to hell. That's man, That one's beyond me. I'm not
- 3:52that is beyond me. I cannot understand. I mean, let's
- 3:55say a Muslim I was debated with a Muslim, and
- 4:00a Muslim said, what if I'm right and the only
- 4:02way to go to heaven is to be a Muslim,
- 4:04I'd say, well, then I would hope, you know, that
- 4:09God would convince me of that before I die, or
- 4:13you know, given our doctor of purgatory, God would enlighten
- 4:16me of that, because my number one goal is to
- 4:20serve God now. And of course I don't believe that true.
- 4:23I believe the Catholic Church be the one true religion
- 4:26on earth and the one true Christian Church. But if
- 4:31someone positive me that question, I would say, well, if
- 4:35that is true, I would hope that I give a
- 4:38chance to find it out before it's too late. And then,
- 4:41of course I would be compelled to become Muslim. If
- 4:46God himself said this is the true religion to worship God,
- 4:50I would have to follow what he said. What many
- 4:53Protestants say, and actually, you know, many Muslims who hate
- 4:57the Catholic Church will say the same thing. They would
- 5:00choose hell over being Catholic rather than admit to the
- 5:04truth of the Catholic Church. And that that's astounding to me,
- 5:08that's mind boggling. I can't even again understand that. Well,
- 5:18it is actually truly sinful. It's it's it's pride. It's
- 5:22a sin of arrogance and pride and humorous and it's
- 5:26actually a mortal sin. And I don't think they even
- 5:29realize that. They just they're so convinced Catholics are wrong,
- 5:35and they're so convinced that their denomination is right that they're,
- 5:38you know, willing to stand on it to the very
- 5:41end and even defy God himself. And you know, I
- 5:45don't know how you can be Christian and be willing
- 5:48to defy God himself, but you know whatever, it's far
- 5:54more common than not. Actually, when I was at a
- 5:56certain Southern Baptist university, that was basically the prevailing attitude.
- 6:00And will you can't You cannot debate with a person
- 6:08like that. You cannot convince a person, you cannot have
- 6:10a productive argument if they are literally willing to go
- 6:14to Hell rather than to believe that the Catholic Church
- 6:18is right in any way, in any way, they would
- 6:20not at the university, at the Baptised University, they would
- 6:23not even admit the Catholics or Christian Let that sink
- 6:27in two thousand years of the Catholic Church. All Christians
- 6:32were Catholic up until about five hundred years ago, not
- 6:36even really that long. To this day the majority of
- 6:40Christians are Catholic. Protestantism is this new Man made and
- 6:44they swear to it, to the point that they would
- 6:46reject the Catholic Church even if they knew that it
- 6:51was God's will that they be part of that church.
- 6:54I can't, I can't get it. I honestly can't anyway,
- 6:57he says. But God does not want you to do that,
- 7:00nor do I. As long as you believe the Catholic
- 7:02Church to be wrong, you are obliged not to join it,
- 7:04in other words, showing to violate your conscience. Yet if
- 7:08ever God gives you the grace to perceive the truth,
- 7:11you will be obliged to join it, no matter what
- 7:14the cost in removing your and renouncing your previous statement
- 7:18and attachments. If and the person says, if a Catholic
- 7:22leaves his church, and outside that church leaves a good lives,
- 7:26a good and devout life. Can he be saved? And
- 7:27they answer, yess, and they answer, and they answer, You
- 7:32give an impossible case. To live a devout life is
- 7:34to live a life devote to God. Now, no Catholic
- 7:37can have a really sufficient reason to doubt the truth
- 7:40of his church. If doubts do come, he owes it
- 7:43to God to make sure of his position before he acts.
- 7:46An inquiry will show that such doubts will be unfounded.
- 7:50If he leaves without such inquiry, he is to blame
- 7:53for throwing away the best of God's gifts. If he
- 7:56inquires sincerely, he stays. Person says, but what if he
- 8:01be fully convinced that the Catholic Church is wrong, even
- 8:04though his conscience be erroneous? Would you blame him for
- 8:07leaving rather than violate his conscience by remaining? And they answer,
- 8:11I would blame him for allowing his conscience to become
- 8:14so convinced by insufficient reason, and for not studying the
- 8:18grounds which absolutely guarantee the Catholic Church as the only
- 8:21completely Christian church. His first difficulty should have led him
- 8:25to seek advice from competent guides. And the person asks,
- 8:29so if a Catholic becomes a Protestant, he has no hope,
- 8:32And they answer, whilst there is life, there is always hope.
- 8:38Where there's life, there is hope. Wonderful saying, such a
- 8:41man may return to the Catholic Church, or at least
- 8:44die sincerely repenting of having ever left it. And he asks,
- 8:48are Protestants free to lead the Protestant Church? That Catholics
- 8:52not free to lead the Catholic Church? And the answer
- 8:54one may always renounce here for truth, but one that
- 8:57is free to forsake the truth, but no one. One
- 9:02may always renounce error for truth, but no one is
- 9:05free to forsake the truth for error. And the man says,
- 9:09Christ died for all. He did not say that we
- 9:11must all be Catholics. And they answer, since Christ died
- 9:14for all, it follows that he wants all to belong
- 9:16to the one church he established and endowed with his authority.
- 9:21Person says, many clever men have examined Roman claims and
- 9:24have rejected them. They do not think it necessary to
- 9:26join the Catholic Church. And they answer equally clever men
- 9:30or convinced of its necessity. After all, there are clever
- 9:32men who reject Christianity itself, but that does not make
- 9:36the truth of Christianity uncertain. We cannot argue from degrees
- 9:40of intelligence in those who accept or reject the Catholic claim.
- 9:43Such differences of human thought prove nothing except that men differ.
- 9:47The real question is not affected. We must study carefully
- 9:51the value of the foundation upon which their claims rest.
- 9:57And we always stop here. No, you know, I'll leave
- 10:02this next time. We got like three more questions and
- 10:04answers in this chapter, and I'm just going to go
- 10:07on to venial sin. Now. Venial sin is very interesting.
- 10:11As you know, Protestants reject that there is any difference
- 10:14between mortal and venial sin, even though the Bible says
- 10:17quite clearly there is. They say all sins equal before God.
- 10:21No it's not. It actually says in the Bible some
- 10:23sends cry out and like sins against the Holy Spirit
- 10:27are unforgivable. You know, the very Bible that they hold
- 10:30up as the sole authority refutes their very doctrine. But
- 10:33you know, they really don't understand venial sin. They'll say
- 10:37either that everybody saved by grace and it doesn't matter
- 10:40what you do. That was That was Martin Luther's doctrine.
- 10:42He encouraged his followers to commit adultery and murder, yeah,
- 10:48to steal, to lie. He said, it didn't matter a bit,
- 10:51and he in fact encouraged them to do so. Or
- 10:55they'll say, well, sends really serious and grave, and Catholics
- 10:58are wrong in saying some sins aren't as well. You know,
- 11:01you can't really have it both ways, but they do.
- 11:05So today we'll get into venial sin. It's short. It
- 11:08will wrap it up for probably this week because I
- 11:11got a lot going on. Still having some major issues
- 11:14with the hurricane damage. Seems that, you know, with the
- 11:18power out and it cold and everything. I got busted pipes,
- 11:22a cracked toilet, busted hot water heater, and owner's insurance
- 11:33denied the claim and has dropped me. I no longer
- 11:37have homeowners insurance. Isn't that great? You pay into it
- 11:40for like ten twenty years and then they just come
- 11:42up and say, you know, hurricanes cause flooding and it's
- 11:45an act of God and we don't cover it all.
- 11:48And besides, we didn't approve of your heating system in
- 11:51the first place. And we would have dropped you before.
- 11:53Now if we have, Oh that's nice, and they say
- 11:56so apply to FEMA, and FEMAS have hasn't replied in
- 12:02a three weeks now, they're just screwing around doing nothing.
- 12:07They did send me, you know, seven hundred and fifty bucks.
- 12:09That's great, but I've got like twenty to forty thousand
- 12:12dollars worth of damage, and so FEMOS recommends you fill
- 12:16out an SBA loan of application small business loan. I mean,
- 12:22I don't even understand how it's supposed to work, but
- 12:24it's supposed to be for home restoration. Filled it out
- 12:27and they denied it because essentially I'm self employed. And yeah,
- 12:32so I mean they didn't even check my credit or
- 12:35you know, money in the bank or anything. It's just
- 12:38they just outright denied me. So yeah, it's not exactly
- 12:43fun right now. But it'll be all right. I know
- 12:46it'll be all right. But yeah, if you would say
- 12:49a prayer for people in western North Carolina and throughout
- 12:53you know, the Appalachian South who are still in Florida,
- 12:57who are still dealing with the effects of these hurricanes,
- 13:00still a lot of people without power, still hearing just horrible,
- 13:05horrible stories of entire families killed in mudslides, and I'm
- 13:10just really really awful, uh stuff, And you know, I
- 13:16don't get it. Biden and all them say FEMA is
- 13:19doing a wonderful job. I can't see that they're doing
- 13:21jack squat and they certainly are not helping me, at
- 13:26least not yet. Every day I log in to see
- 13:28if they've even processed my application and other than saying
- 13:34I could go stay in a motel room for a
- 13:36few days, which would be cool, but they're booked up
- 13:38within one hundred miles from here in any direction. I mean, yeah,
- 13:43that's great. I mean a lot of people have taken
- 13:45advantage of that, and you know that's great. They got
- 13:47a warm place to sleep, but they got electricity and
- 13:52you know, maybe even going to take out pizza or something.
- 13:54Right there is all that lodging's taken, I mean helping
- 14:00me and unless I want to travel maybe a few
- 14:04hours away, and I may have to do that at
- 14:06some point just to get some hot water or something.
- 14:10But yeah, I mean, they approved my lodging, and they
- 14:14approved that seven hundred and fifty dollars deposit in my
- 14:17bank account, which is awesome. I'm glad to have a
- 14:20seven hundred and fifty bucks. I mean, you know, it's
- 14:23good to have some help with the groceries and everything.
- 14:26But I mean, I got tens of thousands of dollars
- 14:33worth of damage, and unless something comes through. I mean,
- 14:39first of all, every construction crew, every home renovation company,
- 14:44every builder is already booked up well in the next year.
- 14:47I'm not gonna get any help in fixing what needs
- 14:50to be fixed for months, maybe even a year. I'm
- 14:54going to have to probably do all this myself. And
- 14:58unless FEMA comes through in a way they haven't so far,
- 15:02it's going to be out of pocket. And you know,
- 15:09I'm sure God will provide. But I mean, you're looking
- 15:11at twenty forty thousand dollars worth of damage and you're thinking,
- 15:15I've been paying in for years on home insurance, no help,
- 15:20I pay my taxes, no help. Now I've got to
- 15:24pay this out of my pocket? What the hell? I mean, literally,
- 15:32how is this? I hate to put in these terms
- 15:37because you know, I mean, my best friend is in Odessa, Ukraine,
- 15:43and I mean I know she's been going through bombing
- 15:46and such that I couldn't even imagine, but we spent
- 15:49We spent billions of dollars to Ukraine. Billions. I mean
- 15:54like literally almost like a million dollars per person. I
- 15:57think last figure I saw was over one hundred thousand.
- 16:00I mean, it's crazy the amount of money we sent
- 16:01to Ukraine. Here I am a tax paying, voting citizens
- 16:13of the United States, and it's like, here's seven hundred
- 16:15and fifty bucks. Be grateful and act like everything's okay.
- 16:18And don't you dare or criticize federal agencies on the
- 16:22internet or you know, you may even be arrested. I
- 16:27a's still a good five hundred people without power in
- 16:29my county. My mine's been in and out. A lot
- 16:33just got restored again, but now I have no hot
- 16:36water because hot water here is broken. And I just
- 16:40I don't our priorities are. You know, you got to
- 16:46take care of your own citizens first. It's wonderful to
- 16:49help out other people. I mean, the Pope's always saying
- 16:51we need to like give all our money to poor
- 16:54countries and let everybody in from you know, no, we
- 16:58actually do have to help ourselves first. I mean that
- 17:02is what the Bible teachers. You care for your own family,
- 17:04and then you take care of others because your responsibilities
- 17:08to your own family first. And Joe Biden's not doing
- 17:12jack squat for us, Kamala Harris isn't doing jack squat
- 17:17for US, Roy Cooper, our government's not doing Our governor's
- 17:21not doing jack squat for us. The only person who
- 17:24has has been Elon musk and in cooperation with President Trump.
- 17:30But yeah, I mean it's not I'm okay. I keep
- 17:36saying to people. They're like, are you okay? Yeah, I'm okay, Okay.
- 17:40I've got a roof over my head, and i can
- 17:41put a fire in the fireplace, and I've got access
- 17:43to clean water, and I'm going to survive, god willing.
- 17:47I mean, I don't see anything that's gonna prevent me
- 17:49from surviving. I can put food on the table. I
- 17:52can actually get out and drive to the grocery store.
- 17:54Now we couldn't do that for a couple of weeks,
- 17:56you know, But this is I don't see anybody trying
- 18:03to make us whole as they say, you know. I mean,
- 18:06if a home inspector would come in right now, he
- 18:08would probably say, well, he'd probably give me a list
- 18:10of things I would have to do to make the
- 18:12house habitable as he say, you know, in good condition,
- 18:17heat and hot water and everything that you would need.
- 18:21And there's nobody doing that. I mean, I'm glad just
- 18:26to have four walls still standing. A lot of houses
- 18:29were just washed other but there's no one coming in
- 18:31saying we're gonna make you whole. And honestly, if that
- 18:37isn't the case, what the hell are we paying for?
- 18:40Why are we paying? I mean, you pay Homewner's insurance
- 18:43because your mortgage company says you have to. I nobody
- 18:47ever talked to has said that when they had damaged
- 18:49to their house fire, water damage, a lightning strike, whatever,
- 18:54that they got all they needed from Homer's insurance. You
- 18:57know who does get all they need from home owner's insurance?
- 18:59The bank, you know, the ones that hold your mortgage.
- 19:02If your house is destroyed, you're pretty much on your own,
- 19:05but the bank gets paid. You'll get a little, a little,
- 19:11just enough to get by, maybe like seven hundred and
- 19:13fifty bucks in a lodging voucher, but the bank is
- 19:16going to get the full value of your property. You
- 19:19also pay mortgage insurance to make sure the bank gets
- 19:22full value of your property. I don't know what we're
- 19:25paying for with our taxes. Honestly, I guess I'm not
- 19:33supposed to say this, but I can't see a lot
- 19:35that FEMA or the National Guard has really done well
- 19:39in western North Carolina. I think really they cause more
- 19:44problems than good. If anything, they've been just a little help.
- 19:49I can go with that, a little help. But I mean,
- 19:52if somebody's not going to come in and make us
- 19:55all whole, as they say, what have we been paying for?
- 20:01And we pay a lot? We pay a lot in
- 20:06both state and federal taxes. North Carolina has some of
- 20:09the highest state taxes in the entire South. What's going
- 20:13on here? Well, anyway, let me get on to Father's
- 20:18sipiagu just say a prayer for the people that are
- 20:21still having effects from a hurricane. As I say, I'm okay,
- 20:25there are a lot of people that aren't. I don't.
- 20:28I'm not going to repeat the stories. If you've been online,
- 20:31if you've been on Twitter and Facebook, if you've watched
- 20:33the news, you've probably heard some horrible things and they're
- 20:37all true, and it's only like a fraction of the truth.
- 20:42Heartbreaking terrible things. But I'm just saying, you come in
- 20:49this country illegally and they give you, I remember, what
- 20:53was it, fourteen hundred dollars a month, that maybe like
- 20:55more like two thousand, A free cell phone, free lodging,
- 20:58free healthcare, free schooling, et cetera, et cetera, free legal representation.
- 21:05And here we are tax paying citizens and their great
- 21:12gift to us is like half the amount they would
- 21:15give one illegal an immigrant for one month. Something's really
- 21:20not right here, something's really not adding up. But anyway,
- 21:26so father Sparaga writes of the consequences of anal sin.
- 21:30Venial sin is a slight thing of itself in itself,
- 21:33but it deprives us of much that is good, just
- 21:37as hair if it gets into the pen, spoils the
- 21:40best handwriting. You probably have no idea what that means. Well,
- 21:45you gotta remember people used to write with fountain pens. Okay,
- 21:48I have a fountain pen. I like it. I don't
- 21:53use it a lot because my handwriting is not really
- 21:55good enough to justify it. But back then they had
- 21:58dip pins. This was a pen that didn't have an
- 22:01ink cartridge in it, but it would sort of an
- 22:03improvement from the old quill pen. It had a brass tip,
- 22:07and you would dip it in ink and then write.
- 22:09And if one little hair from your hair or your beard,
- 22:13or your dog or your cat, whatever got in there,
- 22:15it would ruin your handwriting. And you could be doing
- 22:18a long official legal document or something and it had
- 22:23to be just torn up and started over. So anyway,
- 22:27venal sin leads to mortal sin and eventualates the the
- 22:30loss of sanctifying grace. Venial sin makes mortal sin easy
- 22:35as a spot of decay, and an apple gradually spreads
- 22:38until the whole fruit is rotten. So a man who
- 22:41does not heed venal sin will soon fall into mortal sin.
- 22:45As sickness precedes deaths, so venial sin precedes mortal He
- 22:50who begins by neglecting trifling faults will end by committing
- 22:54grievous sins. Venial sin may be compared to the dust
- 22:59which settles on closed and if it be not brushed off,
- 23:02it will spoil them. In the end. It is the
- 23:05moth that frets away the garment of sanctifying grace. God
- 23:08permits those who make light of menial sin to fall
- 23:11into mortal sin as a chastisement to their negligence. Avoid
- 23:15small sins, says Saint John Christostom, for they will grow
- 23:19into great sins. He that is unjust, and that which
- 23:24is little is in unjust, and that which is greater.
- 23:28That's Luke twenty six ten. As one who wants to
- 23:32cleave a log of wood makes a small incision and
- 23:34then drives in the wedge, so the devil tempts us
- 23:38first to commit slight offenses, and gradually leads us to
- 23:40greater transgressions. Venial sin is all the more dangerous because
- 23:45it deprives us of many actual graces, without which we
- 23:49cannot overcome the assaults of temptation. A mirror which is
- 23:53covered with dust cannot reflect mnimage clearly, the mirror of
- 23:57the soul, its surface obscured by the dust. Venial sin
- 24:01is almost impervious to the rays of the sun of justice.
- 24:04A personage of distinction cannot be expected to approach a
- 24:08man who is frightfully disfigured by some cutaneous disease. Must
- 24:13lets embrace him, or even suffer him to kiss his hand.
- 24:18So God would not admit you to his friendship or
- 24:20delight you with his consolations. If your soul is to
- 24:24face by venal sin. Venal sin lessens our diligence in
- 24:28the pursuit of what is good. A trifling and disposition
- 24:31often incapacitates us and for the performance of duties of
- 24:35our calling. In like manner, venial sin weakens the will
- 24:40and indisposes it for good works. It diminishes the forces
- 24:43of charity, and makes a man lukewarm in the service
- 24:46of God. To him may be applied the words of
- 24:49holy Scripture. Because thou art lukewarm and neither cold nor hot,
- 24:53I will begin to vomit thee out of my mouth
- 24:57Revelations three sixteen. There are temporal penalties due to venial sin,
- 25:04and these will come down upon us, either on earth
- 25:07or after death. In purgatory, Zachary was struck dumb because
- 25:12he would not believe the message of the angel Luke
- 25:15one twenty. Moses was not allowed to enter the Promised
- 25:18Land because of his incredulity. Numbers twenty twelve. Annias and
- 25:24Phirah fell dead. Let's when we try the gain and Annias,
- 25:29since Sephirah fell dead at Saint Peter's feet in consequence
- 25:33of the deception they practice, those who at their death
- 25:36are in a state of venial sin will have to
- 25:38pass through the fires of purgatory in order to expiate
- 25:41them before gaining eight minutes to heaven. On this account,
- 25:45the Saints inflicted severe penalties upon themselves for the least sin.
- 25:50Venal sin must be a great evil, since God, who
- 25:52is merciful and gracious, who is a merciful and gracious father,
- 25:57punishes it with such rigor, namely by temporary exclusion from
- 26:01his kingdom and prolonged suffering and purgatory. And that actually
- 26:06wraps up our chapter on sin for the most part,
- 26:10except beginning next week we will start with vice, and
- 26:13vice grows out of sin, so we've got a ways
- 26:18to go, but we've gotten through the bulk of it. Y'all,
- 26:22have a good one, remember the words of Saint Padre Pio, pray, hope,
- 26:25and don't worry, and I'll talk to you next time.
