- 0:45Speaker 3: thank you for coming on. Man, glad to be here.
- 0:47Speaker 2: I gotta tell you just to start right out. Max here.
- 0:49Speaker 3: You know what Max told me before you got here.
- 0:52Speaker 3: He liked you before it was cool to like you?
- 0:54Speaker 2: Really, when was that you didn't know about this era
- 1:00Speaker 2: this time? Yeah, Honest asked me, He's like listening to
- 1:04Speaker 2: the Turnpike and I was like, yeah, I did before
- 1:06Speaker 2: it was cool.
- 1:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I saw him in twenty eighteen, So I guess
- 1:09Speaker 4: you got me beat.
- 1:11Speaker 5: There was a window there that we weren't very cool
- 1:14Speaker 5: at the beginning, and now I think we're pretty cool.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Oh oh, you hold it. You went from cool to
- 1:19Speaker 2: uncool to cool again, I think so oh yeah, no,
- 1:22Speaker 2: I got what you're saying. Been there, well, thanks for
- 1:24Speaker 2: coming out these a lot of people.
- 1:26Speaker 3: So so this is a Hunter Spencer, he's a fan,
- 1:30Speaker 3: Turnpike fan, doctor Randall, Randall Williams.
- 1:36Speaker 2: He doesn't like, doesn't like. He doesn't introduce himself as.
- 1:41Speaker 6: I've never Oh, I was gonna say, I've never liked
- 1:43Speaker 6: anything before it was cool.
- 1:45Speaker 2: So I'm still waiting for that to happen. And of
- 1:48Speaker 2: course Max he's a fan and Joannie is a fan.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Fact when we came in, y listened to the new album.
- 1:54Speaker 7: Thank You, enjoying all the Hunting lyrics that Yeah dropped
- 1:58Speaker 7: in there.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Phil can you can? Can you speaking the lyrics? Do
- 2:02Speaker 2: you have the thing I sent you? Yeah?
- 2:04Speaker 8: Yeah, I've got it pulled up, I can.
- 2:05Speaker 3: So just for a little background, this part of If
- 2:08Speaker 3: you want to check your text messages and stuff, you
- 2:10Speaker 3: can do all that, but this is a little part
- 2:12Speaker 3: of the show where we have to talk about a
- 2:13Speaker 3: couple of things unrelated to our special guests, but you
- 2:16Speaker 3: just might be of interest to you. Yeah, because some
- 2:21Speaker 3: time ago there, some time ago, there was a incident
- 2:26Speaker 3: that happened at a river access site here. You know
- 2:28Speaker 3: when you go fishing, and they put those outhouses at
- 2:31Speaker 3: the fish and access with the vault toilet you know, sure, yeah,
- 2:35Speaker 3: kind of well like a picture going to like a
- 2:37Speaker 3: campground or something, they got those sort of like permanent.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Yeah, outhouse structures. Yeah.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Well, there was a high profile news story that happened
- 2:46Speaker 3: here where a woman where a dude went down in
- 2:48Speaker 3: there to get his phone and got stuck in the vault,
- 2:53Speaker 3: and so we had the people that rescued him on
- 2:55Speaker 3: the show.
- 2:57Speaker 7: Evan didn't catch this story, No.
- 2:58Speaker 2: No, he does need to them in.
- 3:01Speaker 3: So then they became a whole rash of incidences of
- 3:05Speaker 3: people retrieving things in.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Vault toilets and get stuck.
- 3:11Speaker 3: And then we had a cop right in he rescued
- 3:15Speaker 3: someone out of a vault toilet that was retrieving her
- 3:18Speaker 3: Apple Watch, and he knew how to rescue her based
- 3:22Speaker 3: on having listened to the podcast, because the other rescuers
- 3:26Speaker 3: didn't realize that you could remove the whole pedestal. They
- 3:30Speaker 3: thought the victim had to come out of the hole,
- 3:32Speaker 3: had to come so he gets there and the cops
- 3:35Speaker 3: and firefighters that are there think that she has to
- 3:39Speaker 3: come up.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Through the hole through the seat.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Yeah, and he says, you know what, I was listening
- 3:44Speaker 3: to this podcast and they had a guy on there
- 3:46Speaker 3: to conduct her vault toilet rescue, and he was saying
- 3:50Speaker 3: that you can actually jack the whole pedestal out of there,
- 3:53Speaker 3: so they removed the pedestal and conducted the rescue. Then
- 3:59Speaker 3: Krin find is this. This is a guy that this
- 4:02Speaker 3: is fascinating. Here's the guy that does the news. He
- 4:08Speaker 3: does the news and music. So if you don't like
- 4:11Speaker 3: reading the news, this gentleman sings it. Sings the news
- 4:17Speaker 3: like a modern minstrel kind of this gentleman. And what's
- 4:23Speaker 3: especially trippy about it is he's doing it in a
- 4:26Speaker 3: he has a first light hat on. Oh wow, and
- 4:29Speaker 3: he's doing the news as reported in People. So People
- 4:34Speaker 3: magazine reports women rescued after trying to retrieve her Apple
- 4:39Speaker 3: Watch from an outhouse. So if you're like, I'm not
- 4:41Speaker 3: going to read that, but you like music, you could
- 4:44Speaker 3: listen to music and learn the news.
- 4:49Speaker 2: He played this film. This is amazing.
- 5:00Speaker 9: I dropped my watching some public excretion.
- 5:04Speaker 10: That's no for me, don't that's good bye.
- 5:07Speaker 9: Felicia The Tones of Life and Her Lady Stuck in
- 5:10Speaker 9: the can. This is covered in that blue stuff?
- 5:13Speaker 2: What's this is for?
- 5:14Speaker 11: Really?
- 5:14Speaker 2: Her playing?
- 5:15Speaker 9: She ain't got a watch, she can't.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Tell the time, I know twenty four cent.
- 5:21Speaker 7: She's out of her mind.
- 5:23Speaker 12: Timing in an our house pit, putting her whole self
- 5:26Speaker 12: and in digging through fifties strangers lunch and then she likes.
- 5:30Speaker 9: Her apple products a bunch.
- 5:33Speaker 2: That's a branch too. That's good, Bila housing. This guy
- 5:40Speaker 2: more popular? I don't know. I feel like he should be, like, like,
- 5:43Speaker 2: he should be more famous than weird out. What's this deal?
- 5:47Speaker 2: We can't we can't do that without lately saying who
- 5:49Speaker 2: he is? Who is he? I got it? Look him up?
- 5:52Speaker 2: He should be way more famous.
- 5:55Speaker 3: That'd be a good show, as a show. Not where
- 5:57Speaker 3: you don't have a morning show and I have famous
- 5:58Speaker 3: people on. There should be a morning show where have
- 6:00Speaker 3: people who ought to be famous on?
- 6:01Speaker 8: It's reads piano news. That's the Instagram.
- 6:05Speaker 2: But does it reads like r e E R E
- 6:07Speaker 2: E D.
- 6:07Speaker 8: His name is read like he's.
- 6:11Speaker 13: Read.
- 6:11Speaker 3: His name is reads well, read's piano news. If you're
- 6:15Speaker 3: out there, big admirer, I'll be getting all my news
- 6:19Speaker 3: from you.
- 6:22Speaker 2: He's only thirteen hundred followers. I know, that's all my
- 6:25Speaker 2: news from now on. Man, I wonder if he's covering
- 6:28Speaker 2: the crisis in Israel. I was wondering what he would
- 6:32Speaker 2: think about that, is.
- 6:33Speaker 6: He Are they on the same or does he does
- 6:37Speaker 6: does he experiment in different genres, have one tune that
- 6:42Speaker 6: he plays.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Everything got to be on the piano well unfortunately.
- 6:46Speaker 3: So I don't know yet because I only found out
- 6:49Speaker 3: about him this morning. And you know, in the morning,
- 6:51Speaker 3: you wake up like my garage is a mass. My
- 6:54Speaker 3: kids set their alarms early to play in the snow.
- 6:58Speaker 3: They're a mass, like everybody's lay. And I was in
- 7:02Speaker 3: a bad mood and then I found that, and then
- 7:04Speaker 3: I walked around the.
- 7:05Speaker 2: House with a little chuckle, a little grin on my face.
- 7:07Speaker 2: So he really, he really helped me out reads Piano News,
- 7:11Speaker 2: Ladies and Gentlemen and other show business news. Phil.
- 7:17Speaker 3: I didn't know till I'm going to see Phil's special
- 7:19Speaker 3: play this weekend.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I didn't know.
- 7:22Speaker 8: Thank you m the way.
- 7:23Speaker 2: I didn't know that you can my whole family's going.
- 7:25Speaker 8: Yeah, it's lovely.
- 7:26Speaker 3: I was telling you my kids are mistaken and think
- 7:28Speaker 3: they're going to some kind of Halloween thing.
- 7:29Speaker 14: Yeah, I'm sorry. I mean, you're gonna be ruining their night.
- 7:33Speaker 14: I just want to get the Halloween play.
- 7:36Speaker 3: I'm like the Halloween play. Yeah, my I got tickets.
- 7:40Speaker 3: You kissed somebody in this play?
- 7:41Speaker 8: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 7:43Speaker 11: No.
- 7:43Speaker 14: I was telling Karin the other day, I think I've
- 7:45Speaker 14: kissed more people on stage than in just real life.
- 7:47Speaker 8: Yeah, huh, that's just as the thing.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Uh. Do you know that it made Krinn uncomfortable? Yes?
- 7:54Speaker 2: I think I think she said that.
- 7:55Speaker 14: She she kind of covered her eyes. Which can you
- 7:58Speaker 14: come over.
- 7:59Speaker 2: By when you come over by the mic and walk
- 8:02Speaker 2: us through what.
- 8:02Speaker 11: Happens like watching your brother kiss someone who's number one
- 8:06Speaker 11: and then kiss someone who's not their wife, who your friends?
- 8:09Speaker 3: Oh so you so your lack of your uncomfortability was
- 8:13Speaker 3: on behalf of his wife.
- 8:14Speaker 11: Well it was, it was.
- 8:16Speaker 9: It was dual.
- 8:17Speaker 11: It was more like watching your brother kiss someone passionately.
- 8:23Speaker 11: And I was like, oh, also, that's not Yeah, it
- 8:26Speaker 11: was it was multi time.
- 8:28Speaker 2: You're doing it passionately, Phil, No, I'm getting I'm getting uncomfortable.
- 8:32Speaker 8: I mean, I wouldn't call that passionately.
- 8:36Speaker 14: I mean, like, you know, there's it's it's it's relatively
- 8:39Speaker 14: brief and say in the grand scheme of of like
- 8:41Speaker 14: the you know, the spectrum of kissing.
- 8:43Speaker 2: So but okay, and I gotta ask you something. You
- 8:46Speaker 2: got to promise me to be honest or well you
- 8:49Speaker 2: tell me that you can't.
- 8:50Speaker 8: Okay, Well let me hear the question.
- 8:52Speaker 2: No, it's not what you think. It's not what you think.
- 8:54Speaker 3: You think I'm gonna I'm not going to ask you that.
- 8:57Speaker 3: But here's what I am going to ask you in
- 9:00Speaker 3: the in you're married, I am.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, this has to have come up.
- 9:09Speaker 14: Well, we my my wife and I met during a
- 9:12Speaker 14: play where I was kissing someone there every night that
- 9:14Speaker 14: a person who wasn't her.
- 9:15Speaker 8: She was like helping out.
- 9:16Speaker 2: On the introduction.
- 9:17Speaker 14: Yeah, and then the next play I did the next
- 9:19Speaker 14: thing I did, I made out with someone else, and
- 9:21Speaker 14: she was there too.
- 9:21Speaker 8: She just kind of used to it. Yeah, it's it's
- 9:24Speaker 8: part of the agreement.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Yeah, so there's never she's she never expresses any no,
- 9:30Speaker 2: I mean yeah, if if she, if she has any
- 9:31Speaker 2: sort of trepidation, she's keeping it in.
- 9:33Speaker 14: And I don't know, I never it's it's kind of
- 9:36Speaker 14: just the foundation of our relationship was built on me
- 9:39Speaker 14: kissing somebody else. So in theaters in a theater with
- 9:43Speaker 14: with no emotional attachment.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Correct, gotcha?
- 9:47Speaker 3: Yeah, it has been going good or not good, it's
- 9:50Speaker 3: been great.
- 9:50Speaker 8: Yeah, I've been having a lot of fun.
- 9:52Speaker 14: I haven't watched it, but people seem to enjoy it
- 9:54Speaker 14: all right, so that's it's been nice.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Uh.
- 9:58Speaker 3: We recently had David Chang on the show, and David
- 10:02Speaker 3: Chang talked a lot about hama.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Was he talking about that? Remember how can you remember?
- 10:07Speaker 15: How?
- 10:09Speaker 2: Yeah? Uh? What what's the word?
- 10:16Speaker 8: E k g m hm.
- 10:20Speaker 3: We talked about that a bunch with David Chang. Okay
- 10:23Speaker 3: ek gy if you missed the episode with the chef
- 10:26Speaker 3: j David Chang. E k jami is his practice where
- 10:29Speaker 3: it's a way of dispatching of fish and a lot
- 10:31Speaker 3: of fishmongers and high end restaurants.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Will require uh their their anglers to do this. And
- 10:40Speaker 2: it's that you so magice. You catch fish, you right away.
- 10:46Speaker 3: Sever the fishes, like imagine that you're cutting off its
- 10:49Speaker 3: caudal fin.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Who can tell me what a caudal fin is? Tail tale?
- 10:55Speaker 3: Imagine you're cutting his tail off, and you cut his tail,
- 10:58Speaker 3: you cut through the bone, the end of the spine
- 11:02Speaker 3: of the fish, bend it back, so you now have
- 11:05Speaker 3: opened up the the spinal cord and then they'll take
- 11:09Speaker 3: a brass rod, a copper rod.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Remember doing this with with Helen Show.
- 11:14Speaker 7: I wasn't there for that, but we've talked a lot
- 11:16Speaker 7: about it with her.
- 11:18Speaker 3: You weren't there. This is a I don't have it
- 11:20Speaker 3: as bad anymore. But Yanni and I used to not
- 11:22Speaker 3: do anything apart. So when he was everything that happened me,
- 11:26Speaker 3: I assume he was there.
- 11:27Speaker 7: Yeah, that was a brief moment of meat eater pre
- 11:30Speaker 7: be honest.
- 11:31Speaker 3: And really that long ago. Anyhow, you then take this
- 11:35Speaker 3: this wire and run this wire through its spinal cord
- 11:40Speaker 3: and the and it alters how the fish goes.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Through rigor mortis.
- 11:44Speaker 3: I was observing him that I had seen this done
- 11:46Speaker 3: in South America with a giant river turtle, because when
- 11:51Speaker 3: you kill a turtle, if you chop a snap and
- 11:52Speaker 3: turtle's head off, he'll flex up. When I was a kid,
- 11:56Speaker 3: I'm married like mile Mann, A chopp turtle's head off
- 11:59Speaker 3: and then hang it by its until it relaxed, and
- 12:02Speaker 3: then you clean it. But these guys took that turtle
- 12:05Speaker 3: flop and then took a long skier and down the back.
- 12:10Speaker 2: That's not the noise it made.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Down and this turtle just melted and then they could
- 12:18Speaker 3: promptly clean it. But this guy was listening to this
- 12:20Speaker 3: conversation with David Chang and says, there's a dish called.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Yin Yang fish. Kern, are you familiar?
- 12:32Speaker 3: Never see krims only half Chinese, so she doesn't know
- 12:35Speaker 3: half the Chinese exactly.
- 12:40Speaker 11: This was part of my lack of knowledge.
- 12:43Speaker 3: This is one of the half you don't know about
- 12:45Speaker 3: China before it was Originally it was invented in Taiwan.
- 12:52Speaker 3: This is a brutal dish man. It was invented in
- 12:54Speaker 3: Taiwan but has since gained popularity in China. Vin Yang
- 12:59Speaker 3: fish means dead alive fish, and it's that you're processing.
- 13:06Speaker 3: You're processing, but then also frying. Okay, you take a
- 13:13Speaker 3: live fish, scale it, wrap a head and a towel
- 13:16Speaker 3: filled with ice cubes, then fry the fish's body so
- 13:23Speaker 3: that when you plate the fish.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Go ahead, after you describe it.
- 13:28Speaker 11: If you want to show the video, Phil has it
- 13:30Speaker 11: queued up.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Video. I didn't even know that was I thought it
- 13:35Speaker 2: was a screenshot. Oh, click on the link, let Phil
- 13:39Speaker 2: do it.
- 13:40Speaker 8: Yeah, do we want to watch it.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Well, I don't know how long is it? If Evan
- 13:45Speaker 3: wants to watch it, but watch it. If he does,
- 13:46Speaker 3: we're not gonna watch on.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Can we get the rest of the description before we decide?
- 13:53Speaker 3: I don't know? Okay, So the fishes. The fish is
- 13:58Speaker 3: then plated and dressed with a sauce. He's adorned with
- 14:00Speaker 3: other sides. This is typically done with carp and when
- 14:03Speaker 3: served the fishes, Gill's mouth and eyes are still moving.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Points out that it's just electrical impulses but still mm hmm.
- 14:12Speaker 2: So is it dead or life? It's dead a life fish.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Are you gonna play the cliff? All right, let's watch it.
- 14:25Speaker 2: We don't have to.
- 14:27Speaker 7: I want to see it, ready, said go.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Okay. He's scaling it with a cleaver, which I respect.
- 14:38Speaker 2: It's still still as a carp still alive.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Scored it. He's hauling ass wam into a walk.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Oh that's the astube part.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Huh, brings it over. Oh, here's another guy doing Is
- 14:56Speaker 3: that the same guy doing it? So he's holding it
- 14:59Speaker 3: by the head, wrapped in ice and just dipping its
- 15:02Speaker 3: body in hot oil.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Yeah, come on, dude, it's moving.
- 15:08Speaker 3: That's like a dish. It does not need to exist.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Now then he's plating it out at a banquet. One
- 15:17Speaker 3: minute twenty nine seconds.
- 15:20Speaker 6: Oh, it's a contest to see who seems like a contest.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Come on, man, Wow, the fish's mouth has to move
- 15:29Speaker 2: or the chef fails.
- 15:32Speaker 3: Yeah, one minute twenty seven seconds from when he started
- 15:35Speaker 3: scaling that fish to when it's gasping fried on a plate.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Some fast food. That's good.
- 15:43Speaker 3: You should get him on the show more off. He
- 15:49Speaker 3: should be a more frequent guest. Here's a deal, let's
- 15:56Speaker 3: say a frog. This just came out in the Royal Society.
- 16:00Speaker 3: This is a scientific article that Hefflefinger sent over. Do
- 16:03Speaker 3: we still have that helfe Finger song? I do not
- 16:07Speaker 3: have a quete up right now? I can have that song?
- 16:09Speaker 15: Go?
- 16:11Speaker 2: Was it like a real fast banjo? I have no clue,
- 16:15Speaker 2: but we have a song, right. If we want another one,
- 16:18Speaker 2: I'm not gonna do it. Want to write a song
- 16:24Speaker 2: real quick, like faster than that. This is a different experience,
- 16:29Speaker 2: more of a jingle. I'm not gonna do too much news,
- 16:33Speaker 2: but I'm gonna do a little more news.
- 16:34Speaker 3: So Hefflefinger sends us over, and these German researchers are
- 16:37Speaker 3: looking at Let's say you have there's a species of
- 16:40Speaker 3: female frog. What is this species a female frog? Hefflefinger
- 16:50Speaker 3: calls it menaj or frog.
- 16:53Speaker 7: Well, there was a few species that that he said,
- 16:56Speaker 7: that do this.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Yeah, So let's say there's a female frog and she
- 16:58Speaker 3: gets approached by multiple aggressive males. She might breed with
- 17:08Speaker 3: a male, one male, and then I can lay there
- 17:12Speaker 3: and play dead for two hours. We'll lay in play
- 17:16Speaker 3: dead for two hours until other surrounding males lose interest
- 17:21Speaker 3: in wander off playing possum, and then perks.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Back up takes off. I think about that kind of
- 17:37Speaker 2: makes me uncomfort I'm a why half a finger? Send
- 17:43Speaker 2: it over. It's not my fault, all right. So Aven,
- 17:50Speaker 2: you're from Oklahoma, yes, sir, you know I just got
- 17:56Speaker 2: to do I just got to do my first uh
- 17:58Speaker 2: deer hunt in Oklahoma. But I was not in your
- 18:00Speaker 2: neck of the woods.
- 18:01Speaker 3: We were up on the Kansas We were up close
- 18:04Speaker 3: to Kansas on the Kansas border, just hunting little chunks
- 18:08Speaker 3: of public ground, but had some.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Very good deer hunting. I just got back. Really yeah,
- 18:13Speaker 2: it was from Ponka where I don't want to tell
- 18:15Speaker 2: you exactly, Okay, not that I would tell I will
- 18:18Speaker 2: tell you exactly. I'll tell you very specifically, exactly, but
- 18:21Speaker 2: I don't want to there. Today. I was telling my
- 18:23Speaker 2: kids if anyone asked you where we just hunted, I
- 18:25Speaker 2: was telling them, tell them it's where none of your
- 18:27Speaker 2: creek flows into business river. But uh no, I'll tell you.
- 18:32Speaker 2: I'll talk about the spots. I'll be curious. You're familiar
- 18:34Speaker 2: with it. You're from down in the southeast part I am.
- 18:36Speaker 5: I live in central Oklahoma now, but yeah, I'm from
- 18:39Speaker 5: around Broken Bow.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:40Speaker 3: What was uh what came first with you? Music or
- 18:45Speaker 3: the outdoor pursuits?
- 18:46Speaker 5: Outdoor stuff for sure? At what age little as I
- 18:50Speaker 5: could get around with dad, like squirrel hunting and stuff.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Yeah, what was your dad's story? Uh, he's a cowboy.
- 18:57Speaker 5: Uh he my grandpa. We moved back down there to
- 19:02Speaker 5: he worked from my grandpa warehouser. Uh at the saw
- 19:05Speaker 5: mill and uh it's the paper mill rather, and he.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Worked at a wirehouse or paper mill. Yes, they do
- 19:12Speaker 2: pulp down there. They do pulp down there. They had
- 19:15Speaker 2: a saw mill too in right city of the town
- 19:16Speaker 2: that I grew up. Were they pull uping like pines
- 19:18Speaker 2: or sign hybrid love of lolly pine. But that's oh,
- 19:21Speaker 2: I see, okay, it's a ton of.
- 19:23Speaker 5: It's a ton of open country there, like it was
- 19:25Speaker 5: a half million acres of They were running cattle on it,
- 19:27Speaker 5: pigs on it. People still had pig leases when I
- 19:30Speaker 5: was like a kid, like thirteen, fourteen years old.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Seriously, Yeah, they pulled the cattle of chamber country. Yeah
- 19:38Speaker 2: a pig lea's yeah, h yeah, man, I never even
- 19:41Speaker 2: heard of a pig lease. Oh, Magie, what's up. Good
- 19:45Speaker 2: to see you. Maggie's a fan.
- 19:47Speaker 15: Hey, Maggie, thank you for writing the soundtrack.
- 19:50Speaker 2: I heard you're going to come in. I heard you're
- 19:53Speaker 2: going to come in quiet, but that was real quiet.
- 19:55Speaker 15: It's pretty sneaky.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Or she even get sat down and didn't know she
- 19:58Speaker 2: was there.
- 19:59Speaker 15: Welcome, mag I've been working on my stealthiness and the
- 20:02Speaker 15: elk was let me, Kyrie cab what you missed?
- 20:06Speaker 2: Stuff about people getting into the mouth houses to get
- 20:08Speaker 2: their watches out again, stuff about frogs that.
- 20:12Speaker 3: I didn't even want to get into. And then about
- 20:16Speaker 3: eating live cards.
- 20:19Speaker 15: I saw that David Chang sent that over.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Hun Okay, yeah that's what you miss.
- 20:25Speaker 15: We're happy to be here.
- 20:26Speaker 7: You wearing one of those first light stormy chromers.
- 20:29Speaker 15: I am wearing one of those first light stormy chromers.
- 20:31Speaker 7: Jealous.
- 20:32Speaker 15: I couldn't help myself. Do you know.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Yanni's orange Stormy chromer story. So Yanni had a blaze
- 20:42Speaker 2: orange stormy chromer, but it was like he had it
- 20:44Speaker 2: so long that you tell it, Yanni, what the game
- 20:47Speaker 2: warden said?
- 20:48Speaker 7: Well, you had spent a lot of time sitting on
- 20:51Speaker 7: my dash in my truck because it's a warm hat,
- 20:53Speaker 7: you know, when you're not in the field, I usually
- 20:55Speaker 7: take my hats off and put on the dash. And
- 20:57Speaker 7: I had actually pulled in behind the ward and he
- 21:00Speaker 7: was just off the side of the road doing something
- 21:02Speaker 7: I forgetting.
- 21:02Speaker 2: But you were pulling the warden over.
- 21:06Speaker 7: Not really, I just I just went by to say hi,
- 21:09Speaker 7: and we were chatting, and he looked at my hat
- 21:11Speaker 7: and he goes, you know, you might it might be
- 21:13Speaker 7: time for a new stormy chromer. You're not quite blaze orange.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Anymore, you know, you're kind of a.
- 21:18Speaker 7: Wait stormy chromer is really cool about that twice. It's
- 21:21Speaker 7: just a thing with that like color and dyeing that wool,
- 21:24Speaker 7: that collar that they're aware of it and like every
- 21:27Speaker 7: time they're like, oh, yeah, no problem, they send me anyone.
- 21:29Speaker 6: I've had a couple, not stormy chromers, but orange blaze hats.
- 21:34Speaker 6: Bleach you out on my dashboard. It's funny. I've never
- 21:37Speaker 6: really experienced that, but I'm like very cognizant of it now.
- 21:39Speaker 6: When I take off my blaze hats and stuff, I
- 21:42Speaker 6: don't put them up there.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Cassie, that hat real quick.
- 21:45Speaker 7: I told that story recently twice actually, and both times
- 21:49Speaker 7: people were verre.
- 21:50Speaker 2: That's the first light stormy chromer.
- 21:52Speaker 15: It's a nice hat.
- 21:53Speaker 2: It's way nice. It's pretty cool there, stormy chromer. Oh yeah.
- 21:58Speaker 7: People were mad at the Warden was spending time busting
- 22:02Speaker 7: my chops about the faded blaze as opposed to doing.
- 22:06Speaker 3: More Warden things, Upset that he was talking to a
- 22:10Speaker 3: hunder and establishing a rapport.
- 22:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 22:14Speaker 3: Uh so anyways, from there, mag we went to growing
- 22:17Speaker 3: up in Oklahoma and we just are finding out.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Were you here for the to find out there's such
- 22:21Speaker 2: a thing as a pig Least?
- 22:22Speaker 5: I was not anymore, but at the time, yeah, I
- 22:25Speaker 5: want to make sure.
- 22:26Speaker 3: I want to make sure everybody's getting it so because
- 22:28Speaker 3: I might even have a little bit wrong. So Wirehouser
- 22:32Speaker 3: at a time. I don't know if they still are,
- 22:33Speaker 3: but Wirehouser at a time was one of the biggest
- 22:34Speaker 3: private landowners in one of the biggest I think.
- 22:37Speaker 5: It's international paper now. I think they sold it. They
- 22:39Speaker 5: bought it from Derek's way back in the sixties or something.
- 22:42Speaker 2: So they had these big tracks and they would raise
- 22:46Speaker 2: lob lollie.
- 22:47Speaker 5: Yeah, they had pine and then it had you know,
- 22:49Speaker 5: hardwood on it. Okay, they eventually cleared a lot of
- 22:52Speaker 5: but it's a lot of pine trees still.
- 22:55Speaker 2: And people would run. So they're raising that, but there's
- 22:58Speaker 2: grass underneath it and peopleould.
- 22:59Speaker 5: Run, run some rough cattle in and then yeah, I
- 23:04Speaker 5: guess they ran hogs. And they're still you know, faral
- 23:08Speaker 5: hogs there now.
- 23:09Speaker 3: But when they ran hogs like that, did they have
- 23:11Speaker 3: to put out hog? Were they really just running.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Like loop free?
- 23:14Speaker 5: They were, they were free hogs, but they ate them
- 23:17Speaker 5: and stuff.
- 23:18Speaker 2: So like these people had for years, had lived on them,
- 23:21Speaker 2: so they go and mark them.
- 23:23Speaker 5: Each year and like catch them, catch them with dogs
- 23:25Speaker 5: and like it was like working their livestock. Yeah, but
- 23:28Speaker 5: then they got rid of them because they're obviously not
- 23:31Speaker 5: great for.
- 23:33Speaker 2: For anything.
- 23:36Speaker 3: I'm not a fan, but so tell me more so
- 23:39Speaker 3: you're old man. He worked did mill work but also
- 23:43Speaker 3: did cattle work.
- 23:45Speaker 5: And uh, we moved back down there when I was
- 23:47Speaker 5: a kid, and so I mean it was just this
- 23:50Speaker 5: huge piece of Oklahoma. That's all, you know, the sort
- 23:55Speaker 5: of the Washington Mountains and all that stuff on the
- 23:58Speaker 5: Arkansas border, and a lot of deer and a lot
- 24:01Speaker 5: of squirrel hunting and a few quail and yeah, turkey's
- 24:05Speaker 5: and anything.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Quails gone now though there's there's still a few. Are
- 24:09Speaker 2: you seeing them? It's yeah. And then you're so your
- 24:12Speaker 2: old man introduced you to but he he didn't. He
- 24:15Speaker 2: wasn't a musician. No, yeah, but you got did you
- 24:18Speaker 2: have to? Did you you have an aunt or have
- 24:20Speaker 2: an uncle that plays?
- 24:21Speaker 5: He played in some rock and roll bands and stuff,
- 24:23Speaker 5: and h definitely was a was an influenced to pick
- 24:27Speaker 5: up a guitar.
- 24:29Speaker 2: He's pretty well he was a rock and roll guy. Yeah,
- 24:31Speaker 2: like a bar like a bar rock and roll guy
- 24:33Speaker 2: or black cover band guy. Heavily influenced by Nirvana, rock
- 24:37Speaker 2: and roll like and like yeah, yeah, like pretty neat.
- 24:44Speaker 2: He's a really neat guy.
- 24:45Speaker 5: He was in the Marines for a really long time
- 24:48Speaker 5: and and then uh, he moved to Seattle and stuff
- 24:51Speaker 5: after the Nirvana stuff was going on, and like there
- 24:55Speaker 5: I think, so yeah, i'd have to ask him, but
- 24:57Speaker 5: I would assume, Oh, does he still way? Yeah, yeah
- 25:01Speaker 5: he still plays. He plays gigs and tolsa and stuff still.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Seriously, yeah, oh how did uh?
- 25:09Speaker 11: Like?
- 25:09Speaker 2: What was your dad's hunting program? You know? I mean,
- 25:12Speaker 2: was he like, was he fanatical? He is hunting right now?
- 25:16Speaker 2: Or he is getting ready the bus season right now?
- 25:19Speaker 2: And I'll tell you this.
- 25:20Speaker 7: He's he's down there.
- 25:21Speaker 5: So we know he lives in central oaklhom and he
- 25:24Speaker 5: still travels well and stuff. So he just got off
- 25:26Speaker 5: of a job and I was we're doing a fall
- 25:30Speaker 5: work on instead of cows.
- 25:31Speaker 2: And he's, man, I want to get horseback. I want
- 25:33Speaker 2: to go do this stuff.
- 25:34Speaker 5: But after muscle that season, you know, and so like
- 25:36Speaker 5: we did all this stuff and he's down at the
- 25:38Speaker 5: We have an old bus body down the Glover River
- 25:40Speaker 5: and he's down there camping like where they've been camping
- 25:43Speaker 5: forever you have.
- 25:44Speaker 2: But what it's an old bus oh literally said bus body.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Yeah, oh okay, yeah, I thought that was I thought
- 25:50Speaker 3: that was something meant something just like a bluebird got
- 25:55Speaker 3: you keep it's like you keep it as a camper.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, they've been keeping it up for years. So
- 26:00Speaker 2: you okay, but you have a cattle ranch now, I do,
- 26:02Speaker 2: But that's not a that's not a property you grew.
- 26:05Speaker 5: Up now now I moved back there. So I went
- 26:08Speaker 5: down to southeast Texas for a while. I had some
- 26:12Speaker 5: friends down there that farm drives, and there's a lot
- 26:15Speaker 5: of a lot of cowboys and stuff down there, and
- 26:18Speaker 5: with duck hunted a lot like that's Steel Central and
- 26:22Speaker 5: alligators and you know, it's just this cool part of
- 26:24Speaker 5: the US. And so I really got heavy into this
- 26:32Speaker 5: heavy like day working cowboy in and learning about that
- 26:35Speaker 5: kind of stuff. And age at what age, like thirty
- 26:38Speaker 5: five thirty nine?
- 26:41Speaker 2: Okay, so yeah, I just got obsessed with it and
- 26:44Speaker 2: that's what I like. But you were exposed to it
- 26:48Speaker 2: when Yeah, I knew a little bit about it all,
- 26:50Speaker 2: you know, and I've been doing it my whole life,
- 26:51Speaker 2: but not to a very serious degree. You know. So
- 26:54Speaker 2: who was the who was the friends you were down
- 26:58Speaker 2: hanging out with.
- 26:59Speaker 5: So it's a guy named Justin Jenkins who it's got
- 27:04Speaker 5: an old family farm down there. They raised a lot
- 27:07Speaker 5: of rice and.
- 27:09Speaker 2: And that's what the ducks around.
- 27:11Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, teal blueing teal like crazy. And it was
- 27:14Speaker 5: just like the first time everybody had hung out with
- 27:17Speaker 5: was like really great at calling in ducks and training dogs,
- 27:22Speaker 5: and you know, it was waterfowl Central and really a.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Cool place to be. Did you bring your old man
- 27:27Speaker 2: down there to hunt?
- 27:28Speaker 5: I haven't yet. No, No, it's it's like eight or
- 27:30Speaker 5: nine hours from home. So you know, we haven't hadn't
- 27:33Speaker 5: made it. We've tried to, but we haven't yet.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Old your kids. I have a two year old and
- 27:37Speaker 2: a one year old. Oh yeah, I'm quite old enough.
- 27:41Speaker 5: Now now my little girl almost she's almost old enough
- 27:44Speaker 5: to go with me dove hunting.
- 27:46Speaker 2: But huh yeah. So when I was saying down there,
- 27:52Speaker 2: I mean like down there, like in that state.
- 27:54Speaker 3: But so you you then got into that and then
- 27:58Speaker 3: got a ranch. Now you're actually spending.
- 28:01Speaker 5: Doing that the second time that sohen we found out
- 28:04Speaker 5: we're gonna have our second kid, we decided to move
- 28:08Speaker 5: back to Oklahoma because I was a long way from
- 28:10Speaker 5: all of our family and everything.
- 28:11Speaker 2: And then well so you guys had moved all the
- 28:13Speaker 2: way to Texas, I got you, know, so when you
- 28:15Speaker 2: were say you're hanging out down there, you were living there.
- 28:17Speaker 2: I was living there. Yeah, okay, that's what I was
- 28:21Speaker 2: asking about the kids and all that. Yeah, hanging that
- 28:25Speaker 2: kind of hanging out. I got you. So when you
- 28:27Speaker 2: got into that and went back and started doing your
- 28:29Speaker 2: own deal, and I'm bad. I'm not good at it.
- 28:33Speaker 2: It turns out it's hard. Is your objective to make
- 28:35Speaker 2: money just to have it just because you can have
- 28:37Speaker 2: raise your kids around it?
- 28:38Speaker 5: The second one mostly, but it's got to be somewhat solvent,
- 28:41Speaker 5: you know, or else just lose a lot of money.
- 28:45Speaker 2: So what like, what what sort of operation is it?
- 28:48Speaker 5: It's just a cow calf operation and we run some
- 28:50Speaker 5: yearlins plant some wheat. But uh huh yeah, just just
- 28:56Speaker 5: raising calves every year.
- 28:57Speaker 2: Do you guys do you have to irrigate for wheat?
- 29:00Speaker 2: We don't know, not yet.
- 29:03Speaker 3: And then when you do the Kyle kaf deal, you
- 29:06Speaker 3: but you keep your own Kyle's over the winter and.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Feed them, yes, yeah, lots of feeding.
- 29:11Speaker 5: I got a buddy that moved down and to help me,
- 29:14Speaker 5: and he helps me out with the feeding and stuff
- 29:16Speaker 5: when we're I travel still too.
- 29:17Speaker 2: So oh, That's what I was curious about. Yeah, so
- 29:19Speaker 2: he runs runs things for me.
- 29:22Speaker 3: What's the what's the like? How much your time do
- 29:23Speaker 3: you spend on that? How much time you spend on music?
- 29:26Speaker 5: So all my time when I'm home is like that
- 29:29Speaker 5: and the kids, and then when I'm gone, you know, so.
- 29:32Speaker 2: You write when you're gone. Yeah, if I or I
- 29:35Speaker 2: set aside time for it. Huh when did you use
- 29:39Speaker 2: to write? Oh?
- 29:40Speaker 5: Man, you know that was That's all I did when
- 29:42Speaker 5: I in my twenties, Like when I was you know,
- 29:48Speaker 5: just hung over later around the house or whatever. I
- 29:51Speaker 5: didn't have bigger aspirations. I wanted to like write songs
- 29:53Speaker 5: and play music.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Do you remember, Uh? You remember that that John album
- 30:01Speaker 2: that he had. It was all that live stuff. Mhm nah,
- 30:05Speaker 2: it's like a big double album he had. It was
- 30:07Speaker 2: all live stuff. But he's talking about when he went
- 30:10Speaker 2: once he went to Nashville.
- 30:12Speaker 3: He s talked about how he'd always written, like you're saying,
- 30:14Speaker 3: just you know, whenever and he moved and he tells
- 30:17Speaker 3: his story and he went to Nashville and he had
- 30:19Speaker 3: an appointment to write a song at ten am.
- 30:22Speaker 2: On a Monday morning. Yeah, it's just how like strange
- 30:28Speaker 2: it fell through and be like, okay at ten on Monday,
- 30:30Speaker 2: write a different approach to the craft. Yeah, I don't
- 30:37Speaker 2: do that, but like.
- 30:40Speaker 5: I, I take a pretty organic approach to it and
- 30:44Speaker 5: try to keep inspired ideas like written down and have
- 30:48Speaker 5: some stuff to work off of when I do get
- 30:49Speaker 5: time to fool with it.
- 30:52Speaker 3: I was, uh, chrim was showing me this thing, an
- 30:55Speaker 3: interview you'd done where you were you were talking about
- 31:00Speaker 3: one of your muses or an influence being at those
- 31:03Speaker 3: old tunes by Johnny Horton.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Jimmy Driftwood stuff, and yeah, but I didn't
- 31:08Speaker 2: know until I read that.
- 31:09Speaker 3: I didn't know that John I didn't know that he
- 31:11Speaker 3: was doing someone else's stuff.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:14Speaker 5: Yeah, well nobody, I mean nobody does. But I always
- 31:17Speaker 5: say that because it's it's kind of neat because he
- 31:19Speaker 5: wrote like Tennessee stud and like all these other songs too.
- 31:22Speaker 3: But hey, Phil, can you cue up real quick battle
- 31:23Speaker 3: in New Orleans just so people know what we're talking about?
- 31:26Speaker 2: Yeah, give me a sack. That's why people know what
- 31:28Speaker 2: we're tom about.
- 31:29Speaker 3: I had no idea that there's a Johnny Horton is
- 31:31Speaker 3: playing the music of Jimmy Driftwood.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Yeah, like just oh it's so nerdy. Phil's got no
- 31:39Speaker 2: but I love that stuff. Oh, man, did you do
- 31:41Speaker 2: battle to Greenbrays? I don't know about that one. Hey, hey, hey,
- 31:46Speaker 2: with the green beer Rays.
- 31:47Speaker 4: It's always weird because I always thought Doc Watson was
- 31:49Speaker 4: Tennessee stud.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:50Speaker 5: He the best version of it, yeh is the one
- 31:53Speaker 5: with vaster clements and him on that yeah on will
- 31:57Speaker 5: the circle being broken.
- 31:58Speaker 2: So here's what we're talking about.
- 32:04Speaker 9: See fook. Good little trip along mcclonel Jackson down to
- 32:09Speaker 9: mine in Mississippi.
- 32:10Speaker 10: We took the little bacon and we chok the little beans,
- 32:12Speaker 10: and we caught the bloody British in the town in
- 32:14Speaker 10: New Orleans.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Don't cold, badass. That's good Bill.
- 32:19Speaker 3: There you go, Okay. I just wanted to give people
- 32:23Speaker 3: a little taste. I've tried to turn my kids down
- 32:25Speaker 3: to this stuff. It just doesn't click.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Man. The American brain, you know, is just different now. Man.
- 32:33Speaker 2: I don't know what happened to it.
- 32:34Speaker 5: I don't know why, but those story songs always seemed
- 32:37Speaker 5: really cool to me. I mean I knew it was
- 32:39Speaker 5: like hokey or whatever, and I never got past it.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Well then, because he puts in these kind of like
- 32:46Speaker 2: like real loocid details, you know, like it winds up
- 32:49Speaker 2: being like it's a legit story. Yeah, and that's kind
- 32:52Speaker 2: of his greatest hit. Yeah, but I think can can
- 32:55Speaker 2: can you see? Did he do? Did he do Battle
- 32:57Speaker 2: with the Green Bereys?
- 33:03Speaker 9: You don't know?
- 33:03Speaker 2: So now Phil saying he doesn't know Ballad of the
- 33:05Speaker 2: Green Breys. I don't know, Phil, you're doing great.
- 33:08Speaker 8: Thanks, Randall. It doesn't look like it.
- 33:12Speaker 3: No, So I don't know if you remember, but you
- 33:14Speaker 3: you explained this in an interview, But talk about.
- 33:17Speaker 7: Who Garry and Uh Sadler, Barry Sadler and Robin Moore
- 33:21Speaker 7: wrote Ballad.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Of the Green Yeah, but did he perform it?
- 33:24Speaker 7: Oh, now you're asking who performed?
- 33:26Speaker 3: Yeah, because I'm only just now finding out that he's
- 33:28Speaker 3: not the writer, the jit that what's his name, Johnny Horton,
- 33:32Speaker 3: what's Jimmy Driftwood? No, No, I didn't know. Johnny Horton
- 33:36Speaker 3: didn't write this stuff.
- 33:38Speaker 5: He was kind of like an almost like an Elvis contemporary,
- 33:42Speaker 5: something like a singer like that that wound up doing
- 33:44Speaker 5: these sort of country songs.
- 33:49Speaker 7: Sergeant Barry Sadler.
- 33:51Speaker 3: He's saying, saying, I feel like, well, if I had
- 33:54Speaker 3: some better people who better at internet searches, we'd find
- 33:56Speaker 3: out if this is true.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Randall figure that computer. Unfortunately, No, I'm good. I'm good.
- 34:04Speaker 2: So a PC guy, big PC guy.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Either way, you got influenced by like you kind of
- 34:10Speaker 3: like the you like that story.
- 34:12Speaker 5: Like Marty Robbins and I remember that one being a
- 34:15Speaker 5: big one. But that was all sort of the same
- 34:16Speaker 5: feel the same thing for me, you know, feel the
- 34:20Speaker 5: same slot.
- 34:21Speaker 2: And you got into trying to you got into like.
- 34:23Speaker 5: The story, trying to write those kind of things because
- 34:26Speaker 5: it's not easy.
- 34:27Speaker 3: No, and then you you uh doing dialogue within a song, yes,
- 34:33Speaker 3: which like well, people will tell you.
- 34:34Speaker 2: Not a lot of people say, don't do dialogue, don't
- 34:38Speaker 2: quote any correct or bad songwriting.
- 34:43Speaker 3: Explain how cool it, Explain how dialogue would be in
- 34:46Speaker 3: a song. I do, like think of one of your
- 34:47Speaker 3: songs as dialogue in it. How do you how you delivered?
- 34:50Speaker 5: I mean Dan says hell of a shot or something
- 34:52Speaker 5: like that, like in The Bird Hunters. You're just trying
- 34:55Speaker 5: to sneak it in and change change the narrator quick
- 34:58Speaker 5: enough so it doesn't sound like an insane person is
- 35:00Speaker 5: the narrator.
- 35:00Speaker 2: It's like, and that's it never occurred to me. That's uh,
- 35:06Speaker 2: that's trick or frowned upon. But then I was trying
- 35:07Speaker 2: to think of my head, like you don't hear people
- 35:09Speaker 2: say that often someone They don't quote uh thing that often.
- 35:15Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm wondering what some other red flags and songwriting
- 35:18Speaker 6: are that would have never occurred to me.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, do you have a list explains why my
- 35:26Speaker 2: act has never gone anywhere? There's not like a don't
- 35:30Speaker 2: do this list. You're keeping your wallet. I need to
- 35:32Speaker 2: I need one, probably, but no I don't.
- 35:35Speaker 7: There's got to be some famous songs that have dialogue.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Romeo and Juliet by Mark.
- 35:42Speaker 5: I guess that there is plenty of like duets that
- 35:44Speaker 5: would have dialogue.
- 35:45Speaker 2: Right ninety nine Problems by.
- 35:49Speaker 8: Jay Z.
- 35:50Speaker 2: He said that, so just the dialogue.
- 35:53Speaker 3: But but well he's almost like she said, she said,
- 35:56Speaker 3: a song that has a.
- 35:57Speaker 2: He said she He said, he's talking to the officer.
- 36:00Speaker 2: The I mean, never mind, I think maybe.
- 36:02Speaker 3: Oh, you know what one for sure? You know what
- 36:05Speaker 3: the one I'm thinking of that really has a lot
- 36:07Speaker 3: of it. In one Bourbon, one Scotch, and one beer
- 36:11Speaker 3: by George Thorogood. There's a very detailed conversation uh that
- 36:16Speaker 3: occurs between him and his landlady.
- 36:20Speaker 2: It says like, I ain't got no rent money.
- 36:23Speaker 3: Yeah right, and she says, she says, uh a word
- 36:28Speaker 3: that doesn't mean anything. But I've used it my entire
- 36:31Speaker 3: life because I've always been I've always liked one bourbon,
- 36:33Speaker 3: one Scotch and one beer as uh, he says. He
- 36:38Speaker 3: goes to explain that he does not have his rent
- 36:40Speaker 3: money and his best I can tell, and George Thurgood
- 36:44Speaker 3: is not one to enunciate its best I can tell.
- 36:48Speaker 3: She says that don't befront me. Yeah, as long as
- 36:54Speaker 3: I have my money by next Friday.
- 36:57Speaker 2: And growing up like I'm not gonn like in high school,
- 37:01Speaker 2: that was that became so interwoven.
- 37:04Speaker 3: It was like two words. There's a bunch of words,
- 37:06Speaker 3: but uh to say like it just doesn't befront me.
- 37:13Speaker 3: We just use that word and it was the only
- 37:16Speaker 3: attribution be that it came from third ago. There's another
- 37:22Speaker 3: like another word that came up as we would play
- 37:24Speaker 3: a lot of cards, even on the school bus. We
- 37:26Speaker 3: play cards, and when you're doing poker with wild cards,
- 37:30Speaker 3: you wind up with you know, you got like trips
- 37:33Speaker 3: three of a kind, quads four of a kind, but
- 37:35Speaker 3: once you introduce the wild card, it becomes possible to
- 37:38Speaker 3: get five of a kind and five of a kind.
- 37:41Speaker 3: I don't know who came up with this was puples,
- 37:45Speaker 3: So poops would be like five of something? How many
- 37:50Speaker 3: you got poops? But it don't befront me so anyways,
- 37:57Speaker 3: it's not as uncommon as some light.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Thing to have dialogue, yeah exactly, But you do like
- 38:12Speaker 2: you do like the narratives, and the bird Hunter is
- 38:13Speaker 2: a great narrative song.
- 38:15Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I like those kind of kind of songs
- 38:18Speaker 5: that you're trying to flesh out of an actual story
- 38:23Speaker 5: that's bigger than what the song has to tell.
- 38:25Speaker 2: Maybe in sort of what you.
- 38:28Speaker 5: Don't that can do more than the time that you
- 38:31Speaker 5: have there, You know, what does that song to tell
- 38:34Speaker 5: a bigger story or to allude to some things that
- 38:38Speaker 5: might sort of underscore the narrative that's going on. That's because,
- 38:46Speaker 5: like in a song, you only have a finite amount
- 38:49Speaker 5: of words that you can say to tell.
- 38:52Speaker 2: A much larger story. Have you ever conned them up? No?
- 38:56Speaker 2: But it's not very many.
- 38:58Speaker 3: No, because you know it's it's shocking. I want to
- 39:02Speaker 3: you to continue what you're saying. But coming up in
- 39:04Speaker 3: the magazine world, you'd be contracted by word count, okay,
- 39:12Speaker 3: so be like give us eight hundred words on this,
- 39:14Speaker 3: fourteen hundred words on this. If they come in it's
- 39:16Speaker 3: like three thousand words, and you're like, oh sweet, So
- 39:18Speaker 3: you'd sign a contract like two bucks a word, and
- 39:21Speaker 3: then you're kind of waiting and we're thinking like four
- 39:23Speaker 3: thousand words.
- 39:24Speaker 2: You're like king, you know.
- 39:28Speaker 3: But then sometimes you'll have there'll be a song that
- 39:32Speaker 3: is really moving, you know, and you feel like the
- 39:34Speaker 3: song unpacks a lot and does a lot, and you
- 39:37Speaker 3: look at the word kind of be.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Like, that's some bitch did that like sixty words, which
- 39:42Speaker 2: is not that much. It'd be interesting to count how
- 39:46Speaker 2: many words when the record of the Edamin Fitzgerald, Yeah,
- 39:48Speaker 2: there's a handful in there. Yeah. Well it doesn't have
- 39:50Speaker 2: a U. It doesn't have a chorus either. Does it
- 39:56Speaker 2: not have a chorus? I don't believe. So believe it's
- 40:00Speaker 2: all just verse rolls verse, verse, verse to verse.
- 40:03Speaker 5: So you're gonna get more word count just because he
- 40:06Speaker 5: must have been getting a high getting.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Getting three bucks a word and not giving a chorus
- 40:14Speaker 2: at all, like no course, oh yeah that song. Yeah,
- 40:18Speaker 2: you're right, there's no chorus in there.
- 40:22Speaker 3: But anyway, continue what you're saying about, like how to
- 40:24Speaker 3: get more done in brief periods of time.
- 40:26Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, so you have a chorus that is
- 40:31Speaker 5: obviously sort of like underscoring your main idea. But you're
- 40:36Speaker 5: trying to tell a pretty like a lot of those songs,
- 40:42Speaker 5: I'm trying to tell a bigger story than I have.
- 40:46Speaker 5: You know, it's two or three sentences really that the
- 40:51Speaker 5: verses wound up being. So yeah, that's the that's the
- 40:59Speaker 5: tricky part.
- 41:00Speaker 2: You know. You remember obviously Norm McDonald, Yes, well Nor
- 41:06Speaker 2: McDonald had a talk show, and it was a running
- 41:09Speaker 2: gag in Norm McDonald's talk show to ask comedians where
- 41:15Speaker 2: do you get your ideas? And then the comedian would
- 41:19Speaker 2: just immediately deflate the interview because it's like a sin
- 41:27Speaker 2: to say that to somebody.
- 41:29Speaker 3: So I'm trying not to say where do you get
- 41:30Speaker 3: your ideas? I'm recognizing that that's a sin, but I'm
- 41:34Speaker 3: trying to get at that. So I'm trying to offer
- 41:36Speaker 3: up like, Okay, cal our buddy Callahan is not here.
- 41:41Speaker 3: He's like the bird Hunters is the greatest. He thinks
- 41:44Speaker 3: it's better than Country Boy Can Survive and Fred Baer.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Now, Steve.
- 41:56Speaker 15: Evan, I heard you mentioned in an interview that a
- 42:01Speaker 15: lot of your ideas for songs come from this time
- 42:04Speaker 15: before you had cell phones.
- 42:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I kind of technology time period when I was like, well,
- 42:11Speaker 5: I didn't get a cell pone until I was like nineteen,
- 42:13Speaker 5: so so.
- 42:15Speaker 2: Long you weren't allowed one or just didn't get one.
- 42:17Speaker 2: I just don't think I got one. I don't know.
- 42:19Speaker 5: It was another place like we were. We were behind
- 42:23Speaker 5: the times, pretty pretty bad where I grew up. But yeah,
- 42:28Speaker 5: I liked that, and I still try to like put
- 42:34Speaker 5: everything in that sort of that's a romantic time period
- 42:37Speaker 5: for me or whatever.
- 42:38Speaker 2: So yeah, oh.
- 42:39Speaker 3: I said, Okay, So you mean most of the stuff
- 42:41Speaker 3: you're doing is based off these interactions and experiences that occurred.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Sure, yeah, and what would be pre cell phone simpler times? Yeah,
- 42:49Speaker 2: simpler times.
- 42:51Speaker 3: So what the burdenars? I'm not going to ask you
- 42:53Speaker 3: where the idea came from, but you know what I mean.
- 43:00Speaker 5: So there's a Hemingway short story called The Three Day
- 43:02Speaker 5: Blow that part of that comes from, and then parts
- 43:05Speaker 5: of it are from real life, and parts of it
- 43:08Speaker 5: are just the stuff I made up from my experiences.
- 43:12Speaker 2: But if you get a great deal, like if you
- 43:14Speaker 2: get a great deal, like you go to Hell and
- 43:16Speaker 2: I'm going home.
- 43:21Speaker 3: I would picture that. I would be sitting there and
- 43:24Speaker 3: I would overhear someone. I'd be like in a parking lot,
- 43:28Speaker 3: and I'd overhear someone say, you go to Hell, I'm
- 43:32Speaker 3: going home, And then like that would always live in
- 43:38Speaker 3: my head, and then I would start adding things.
- 43:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that's pretty much it. Yeah, give me a thing
- 43:45Speaker 2: that's stewing in your head right now. Oh, I don't know.
- 43:48Speaker 2: I can't. I can't do that. You don't have like
- 43:51Speaker 2: a burning thing stewing in your head right now. I
- 43:53Speaker 2: tell somebody, they'll steal it. Yeah, but they won't know
- 43:55Speaker 2: how to fly. Like, listen, if somebody will, if I
- 43:58Speaker 2: told you, just whisper it.
- 44:00Speaker 7: Don't you remember our conversation with the Isabel brothers and
- 44:04Speaker 7: uh Luke about how they just get together and then
- 44:07Speaker 7: just churn and churn like a machine pumping the music out.
- 44:13Speaker 7: That's all it takes.
- 44:14Speaker 2: I don't think one of those. Yeah, if those guys
- 44:17Speaker 2: get a hold of this stuff, I think I'm gonna
- 44:20Speaker 2: get a piece of it. I actually got him. I
- 44:21Speaker 2: actually got him on here right now.
- 44:23Speaker 7: He's like, I imagine that cowboy in is ripe.
- 44:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's.
- 44:29Speaker 5: It can be definitely in Southeast Texas, there's a lot
- 44:33Speaker 5: of it's. It's easy to for it to be silly, though,
- 44:36Speaker 5: you know, you got to watch out like trying.
- 44:38Speaker 7: I don't want to sound like that right now. Current
- 44:41Speaker 7: Evans life just constantly giving.
- 44:43Speaker 5: You Oklahoma does not offer up a lot of ideas
- 44:47Speaker 5: all the time. No, it's not as man as you think.
- 44:49Speaker 2: You want me to give you a shipload of ideas
- 44:50Speaker 2: right now. Sure check this out. This is like you
- 44:56Speaker 2: don't know if you know Krin's a really good producer.
- 44:58Speaker 2: I don't doubt it at all. Listen to this.
- 45:02Speaker 3: So this is like so unfunny I had there's a
- 45:06Speaker 3: very unfunny thing that happened. I'm gonna give you a
- 45:08Speaker 3: bunch of song ideas in a minute.
- 45:09Speaker 15: Here.
- 45:12Speaker 3: What state are all these song ideas from the family
- 45:16Speaker 3: that has all the sayings? Okay, I was trying to
- 45:21Speaker 3: come up with an old time saying and I'll just
- 45:23Speaker 3: tell you it's it's so stupid. But I was observing
- 45:27Speaker 3: if you send your kids out to pick pole beans,
- 45:30Speaker 3: and I'll be like, there'll be how many all of them?
- 45:32Speaker 3: And they'll come in and I got them all. Then
- 45:35Speaker 3: you go out and they definitely did not get them all.
- 45:39Speaker 3: Then you send your visiting friend out and she'll say
- 45:43Speaker 3: I got them all, and you go and be like,
- 45:45Speaker 3: she didn't get them all. And I came up with
- 45:46Speaker 3: this saying. It's an old saying, but I just invented.
- 45:48Speaker 2: It, and this is taking off like wildfire. A fresh
- 45:51Speaker 2: set of eyes will always find more beans.
- 45:55Speaker 8: Now.
- 45:57Speaker 3: A guy wrote in that Anna pod Dotton. There's a
- 46:01Speaker 3: word and atan is a rhetorical device in which a
- 46:05Speaker 3: thought is intentionally expressed, intentionally expressed incompletely because you know
- 46:12Speaker 3: that people know the other half. So when someone says
- 46:15Speaker 3: when in Rome, that is a yeah of a feather.
- 46:23Speaker 5: Yeah, you're you're engaging somebody to fill in blanks. So
- 46:27Speaker 5: they're part of the storytelling.
- 46:30Speaker 2: What do you say? Different strokes? Those are all this
- 46:34Speaker 2: is good stuff. So this isn't the ship for your song,
- 46:43Speaker 2: Phil cut this out.
- 46:46Speaker 3: If Dan Reid isbel listens, somehow it can't come. They
- 46:51Speaker 3: can't come to their I P address. A guy's like,
- 46:54Speaker 3: you're because you're saying, is you know, he's pointing out
- 46:57Speaker 3: that it's kind of dorky, but a fresh set of eyes.
- 47:03Speaker 2: Yeah, that works, But it's also just so literal at
- 47:08Speaker 2: that point. Yeah it is, I guess mighty literal.
- 47:15Speaker 6: Beans like the beans is what makes it sort of
- 47:20Speaker 6: funny to apply it to a fresh situation. But if
- 47:23Speaker 6: you just find a deer that's been out there that
- 47:25Speaker 6: no one's seen, and he just say a fresh set
- 47:27Speaker 6: of eyes, there's nothing really to fill fit in.
- 47:31Speaker 2: People have written in dozens of variations. More eyes on
- 47:36Speaker 2: the vine, leaves less behind, more beans you will find
- 47:43Speaker 2: with the fresh set of eyes. It's these rhymes.
- 47:48Speaker 3: Well, here's the thing that so this guy rolling in
- 47:50Speaker 3: and he goes, I got a lot of old fashioned
- 47:52Speaker 3: sayings that don't are family invented, and these were the
- 47:55Speaker 3: songs are lying.
- 47:57Speaker 2: Let me know if anyone's heard he's before. That's a
- 48:01Speaker 2: damn thin shingle. Then ain't got two sides, man, a shingle.
- 48:11Speaker 2: Your shingles on your roof have gotten so thin, so thin,
- 48:16Speaker 2: it doesn't even have two sides anymore.
- 48:19Speaker 3: It's your little red wagon. Sorry, it's your little red wagon.
- 48:23Speaker 3: You can push it or pull it.
- 48:27Speaker 7: I haven't heard it.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Okay, Well I wear a nine, but a nine and
- 48:31Speaker 2: a half felt so good. I got a ten.
- 48:40Speaker 3: Well, it's bigger than a butter bean, and you eat
- 48:42Speaker 3: those one at a time.
- 48:46Speaker 7: I think you.
- 48:46Speaker 8: Started with the better ones.
- 48:48Speaker 2: Yeah, if Junior is fishing in the mud puddle with
- 48:52Speaker 2: a broomstick, don't call him stupid until you ask how
- 48:56Speaker 2: many he has caught. I like that one. I could
- 48:58Speaker 2: picture that being a song. It's kind of a long Yeah,
- 49:06Speaker 2: none of this is grabbing you. We need to get
- 49:09Speaker 2: instead of taking, instead of having, instead of having having Pelgram,
- 49:14Speaker 2: we should have got that. Damn guy read from the
- 49:16Speaker 2: news he'd have fifteen songs written.
- 49:20Speaker 6: I fear we might be setting your songwriting back a
- 49:24Speaker 6: few weeks with this.
- 49:25Speaker 2: I don't know. Yeah, he's pretty good. We're gunking up
- 49:28Speaker 2: the works here. It's like actually counterproductive.
- 49:32Speaker 5: Read got turning out stuff. It takes me a year
- 49:34Speaker 5: to do an album, six years, whatever.
- 49:38Speaker 2: Do you feel You guys done five albums we have
- 49:41Speaker 2: and you did an album that wasn't really an album.
- 49:43Speaker 5: Yeah, we did one kind of in a garage and Duran, Oklahoma.
- 49:46Speaker 5: That didn't sound The sound quality was not.
- 49:50Speaker 2: Because you because you guys were touring but didn't have
- 49:52Speaker 2: anything to sell.
- 49:53Speaker 5: Yeah, we were playing bars and stuff like right around,
- 49:55Speaker 5: like really crappy bars in Oklahoma Originals though, Yeah, we
- 50:00Speaker 5: were playing original songs. We were playing like songs off
- 50:03Speaker 5: that record and then whatever else they made us play, and.
- 50:06Speaker 3: You wanted to have a thing to Selsey made it
- 50:07Speaker 3: the album, and then later you had to be and
- 50:09Speaker 3: well not really.
- 50:10Speaker 2: That album exactly what happened to that? Is that album
- 50:14Speaker 2: still alter kind of maybe? I don't know, And what
- 50:16Speaker 2: form was it back then?
- 50:17Speaker 5: It was a c Yeah, it would just not No, it's.
- 50:23Speaker 2: Not want not really what year was that, five.
- 50:27Speaker 5: Two thousand and five? It could be, I'm not. It
- 50:31Speaker 5: just wasn't like most of the guys that play that
- 50:35Speaker 5: we or all the guys pretty much that we play
- 50:38Speaker 5: with now, weren't on it, Like Kyle wasn't in the
- 50:40Speaker 5: band back then, and it was a pretty like young
- 50:48Speaker 5: iteration of what we are now.
- 50:50Speaker 2: Yeah, did you ever go back and fix any of
- 50:51Speaker 2: that stuff up and redo it? Yeah?
- 50:54Speaker 5: We did a few songs off of it on the
- 50:58Speaker 5: On the Turnpike Troubadour's record we did in California.
- 51:01Speaker 2: You guys have had. I mean such a long, long,
- 51:07Speaker 2: long run in years. Yeah, yes, it's crazy.
- 51:13Speaker 3: But then, uh, you're not worried about putting out an
- 51:17Speaker 3: album every year.
- 51:18Speaker 2: No, no pressure to do that.
- 51:21Speaker 5: There really isn't, honestly, I mean it. Uh, for a
- 51:27Speaker 5: while there we were touring so so much and then
- 51:30Speaker 5: stepped away from all of it for X amount of time,
- 51:33Speaker 5: and it was still like five years and some change
- 51:35Speaker 5: was the longest we've gone putting out a record, you
- 51:38Speaker 5: know whatever. Two and a half three of it weren't
- 51:40Speaker 5: weren't even playing or thinking about playing. Yeah, you know,
- 51:46Speaker 5: but no, there's not any pressure.
- 51:47Speaker 2: But I do.
- 51:49Speaker 5: I do like, you know, having having songs, having something
- 51:54Speaker 5: to promote, keeping things new, having new songs, you know,
- 51:57Speaker 5: because without without a record, it's hard to play new
- 52:00Speaker 5: originals in the shows too.
- 52:03Speaker 2: So you become your own cover band. Yeah exactly.
- 52:07Speaker 3: Yeah, you guys broke up for a while. I'll sick
- 52:12Speaker 3: of talking, Like on a one to ten, how sick
- 52:14Speaker 3: of are you talking about this?
- 52:16Speaker 8: Not at all?
- 52:18Speaker 2: Whatever? Yeah, I don't. I don't mind talking about it
- 52:21Speaker 2: at all.
- 52:21Speaker 13: You know.
- 52:22Speaker 3: Yanni Yanni here texted me this morning and he's like, hey,
- 52:27Speaker 3: can we talk about drinking on the show.
- 52:28Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I said, I imagine so he said, it's
- 52:34Speaker 2: quin drinking. Yeah, quitn't drinking. He said, it's a lot
- 52:37Speaker 2: in the album. There's a lot in the album.
- 52:38Speaker 3: What were you thinking about Yanni's Yanni's periodically quits drinking.
- 52:42Speaker 3: Really he did a whole year one time?
- 52:44Speaker 2: Really?
- 52:46Speaker 15: M hm?
- 52:47Speaker 7: Well, I think the older I get, the more and
- 52:49Speaker 7: more I think about it more and more. And you
- 52:51Speaker 7: think about, you know, being present for people in your life,
- 52:55Speaker 7: and if you're on the sauce, even just a little bit,
- 52:59Speaker 7: you're not one hundred percent there, you know. And I
- 53:01Speaker 7: see other people close in my life that battle with it, and.
- 53:05Speaker 5: I see it all the time too, you know, And
- 53:07Speaker 5: I'm it was the the best thing that ever happened
- 53:10Speaker 5: to me was getting sober.
- 53:11Speaker 2: I've been.
- 53:12Speaker 5: I'll have four years or so in January, total sober,
- 53:17Speaker 5: completely sober.
- 53:18Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 53:18Speaker 2: Do you even do you drink an a beer? I do.
- 53:21Speaker 5: You're not supposed to talk about it, but Heineken zero
- 53:23Speaker 5: zero is pretty good.
- 53:25Speaker 7: Why were we I supposed to talk about it?
- 53:26Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 53:27Speaker 2: It's just not a good example. You're not a good
- 53:29Speaker 2: role model if you just hold home like a recovered.
- 53:32Speaker 2: Like if you're like, if you quit drinking, yeah, it's
- 53:36Speaker 2: bad form drink. It's not good form.
- 53:39Speaker 5: To like if you're helping people quit drinking, to propose
- 53:42Speaker 5: that slamming some a beers. You know, man, it's just
- 53:45Speaker 5: not great. Dude, I cannot if you're going to work
- 53:48Speaker 5: or something.
- 53:49Speaker 2: Disagree. I so completely disagree with it.
- 53:51Speaker 5: Actually has was a cool thing and like it's it's
- 53:55Speaker 5: nice to be able to drink a beer, like after
- 53:58Speaker 5: an entire life of you know, that being a sort
- 54:01Speaker 5: of cornerstone.
- 54:02Speaker 2: Of what what people did? You know, you guys all know,
- 54:05Speaker 2: and like, man, cool subject. This is so off subject
- 54:09Speaker 2: for us. We usually talk about outdoor stuff, but I'd
- 54:11Speaker 2: talk about this kind of stuff all day long.
- 54:15Speaker 3: There was a time like you had a quote and
- 54:17Speaker 3: that in a I think you were in a Rolling
- 54:20Speaker 3: Stone profile on you, uh, you know quote like if
- 54:26Speaker 3: you didn't drink like that, you weren't our kind of people.
- 54:29Speaker 2: Yeah. When I was in for a lot of.
- 54:32Speaker 3: Years, I was suspicious of people me too.
- 54:39Speaker 2: They made me uncomfortable. And I was joking before you
- 54:42Speaker 2: came in. We were joking. I was joking if someone you.
- 54:44Speaker 7: Know, specially the people that didn't drink.
- 54:46Speaker 3: Oh yeah, like when I was in graduate school, and
- 54:48Speaker 3: if someone was, you know, if someone like invited, like
- 54:52Speaker 3: some folks you went to school with were getting together
- 54:55Speaker 3: to play a board game or watch a movie or something,
- 55:00Speaker 3: and you sounded got the sense that they weren't all
- 55:01Speaker 3: gonna be totally wasted.
- 55:04Speaker 2: And he'd be like, I don't know, it sounds uncalled,
- 55:06Speaker 2: it sounds awkward.
- 55:07Speaker 4: Yeah, it was as you couldn't what are we going
- 55:11Speaker 4: to talk about?
- 55:11Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I'd be like I'd either like to be
- 55:13Speaker 3: if I if I was out in the mountains or
- 55:15Speaker 3: out in the woods, I like that. And if I
- 55:17Speaker 3: was in town, I was drinking. Hm, i'd write in
- 55:20Speaker 3: the day and I was gonna drink at night. And
- 55:22Speaker 3: if not, I've always knew that I was gonna go
- 55:23Speaker 3: hunting your fishing. If I was hunting your fishing, I didn't.
- 55:25Speaker 3: I didn't even like barely had a thirst, barely had
- 55:28Speaker 3: a thirst. But I could not be in a social
- 55:32Speaker 3: arena without having because it was just so it's just
- 55:37Speaker 3: too intimate, you know, I see now. At the time,
- 55:41Speaker 3: I just thought it was like we were just trying
- 55:42Speaker 3: to have fun. It'd just be easier to go laugh
- 55:44Speaker 3: about stuff with your buddies. Then it would be to engage,
- 55:47Speaker 3: you know, and Yannie, because I don't know if you
- 55:52Speaker 3: know Yanni's well he's laughing, and they liked the pullet cork.
- 55:58Speaker 3: Really they'll laugh you so Yan he would periodically check
- 56:03Speaker 3: to make sure he didn't need to pull a cork.
- 56:07Speaker 2: Did a month?
- 56:07Speaker 7: Still do did a month?
- 56:09Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 56:09Speaker 9: Did a month?
- 56:10Speaker 2: Did a year? Where are you at now?
- 56:12Speaker 7: Like, I don't know, five days, like specifically right now?
- 56:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, five days.
- 56:19Speaker 3: I haven't been drunk since the last time I got
- 56:21Speaker 3: drunk was in well.
- 56:23Speaker 7: No, that's a different story, since I last had a beer.
- 56:25Speaker 2: Versus No, what was the last time he got drunk?
- 56:28Speaker 7: Oh, I don't know.
- 56:29Speaker 2: I've been drunken years and years months again, you got
- 56:33Speaker 2: drunk couple months ago?
- 56:34Speaker 7: Well, again, that depends on what the definition of that is,
- 56:37Speaker 7: Like drunk enough to be like I'm not going to drive, Yeah,
- 56:39Speaker 7: a couple of months ago. Yeah, but that doesn't take much.
- 56:43Speaker 2: The last time I got drunk, we were at Shot
- 56:45Speaker 2: show in Las Vegas and we were out with Kent
- 56:47Speaker 2: and Karuf and I remember having like five six vocatonics
- 56:52Speaker 2: vaka sodas hung over for forty eight hours.
- 56:56Speaker 3: No thank you, and I I never ever again because
- 57:00Speaker 3: the thing I say this all the time, the thing
- 57:02Speaker 3: that got me, the thing that made me quit drinking,
- 57:06Speaker 3: and I never like, like I didn't struggle to quit drink.
- 57:09Speaker 3: When I have to talk about drinking, I talk about like
- 57:11Speaker 3: drink drinking. It wound up not being hard because uh,
- 57:18Speaker 3: I got too sick of the hangovers. But the thing
- 57:20Speaker 3: that happened to me those most impactful was having young kids.
- 57:23Speaker 3: And my oldest is thirteen. So I would find that
- 57:29Speaker 3: you would, uh, I would find myself.
- 57:33Speaker 2: Being annoyed at them in the morning, yeah, because they're
- 57:37Speaker 2: up and ready to rock so early. Being hungover it
- 57:39Speaker 2: doesn't help that.
- 57:40Speaker 3: Yeah, and you and so you're kind of like irritated
- 57:44Speaker 3: or you'd hear them, you know, you hear them they're up,
- 57:46Speaker 3: and you know they're up. You learn how to be
- 57:48Speaker 3: a very light sleeper as a parent, and so you'd
- 57:50Speaker 3: be like you hear Annoise, you know, and you're like.
- 57:53Speaker 2: I just remember thinking like, seriously, you know, more minutes please.
- 57:59Speaker 3: Yeah, and catch myself in that annoyance and then having
- 58:03Speaker 3: the realization of being like these people did not ask
- 58:07Speaker 3: to be born. Yeah, they did not like asked to
- 58:10Speaker 3: come live in this house. You did this, you know,
- 58:14Speaker 3: you created this scenario.
- 58:15Speaker 2: You did this, And if anyone can learn anything from
- 58:18Speaker 2: reading Corn McCarthy, once you do something, you should not
- 58:21Speaker 2: pretend that you didn't do it. And that little bit
- 58:26Speaker 2: of guilt about just not being ready to rock in
- 58:28Speaker 2: the morning, it was the thing that like ultimately did
- 58:32Speaker 2: it and I've gotten to the point now I just don't.
- 58:33Speaker 2: But in terms of just a return to the NA
- 58:35Speaker 2: beer thing, Yeah, you know, if you're out at an
- 58:39Speaker 2: event and people around you are drinking and you just
- 58:43Speaker 2: go up and get water or whatever you you're so
- 58:47Speaker 2: you're aware, like something in your brain is aware that
- 58:50Speaker 2: you're not. Yep.
- 58:52Speaker 3: But I have found if you get an NA beer
- 58:55Speaker 3: and put really spicy bloody mary mix in it, about
- 58:59Speaker 3: it one to four ratio spicy bloody mary mixed one
- 59:04Speaker 3: part three parts and a.
- 59:07Speaker 2: Beer, you think because there's a burn.
- 59:11Speaker 3: The spice, there's the fizz of the beer and the
- 59:15Speaker 3: spice of the thing, and there's a burn in the
- 59:19Speaker 3: back of your throat that makes your brain think that
- 59:21Speaker 3: you're like social.
- 59:25Speaker 2: Do you know what I'm saying? If I'm doing that,
- 59:27Speaker 2: I can look converse. Your brain's starting to tell you
- 59:29Speaker 2: everything's gonna be okay. Yeah, you know, it shuts off
- 59:34Speaker 2: and then all of a sudden, there I am talking
- 59:35Speaker 2: to some guy I don't know, and I'm like, well,
- 59:36Speaker 2: actually I was born in Michigan. Ye oh, you're from Tulsa,
- 59:41Speaker 2: you know, Bob, you know all that kind of ship
- 59:44Speaker 2: and us. There I am talking to some guy I
- 59:46Speaker 2: don't know very well.
- 59:48Speaker 7: It's funny, which you don't like doing, not.
- 59:51Speaker 2: A ton I like talking to him. I don't know
- 59:53Speaker 2: him heaving. But uh so, I just am surprised about
- 59:59Speaker 2: it that that na thing is regarded as not positive.
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: It depended on who you were talking to. But it's
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: just so close to the line for some people that
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: it would be easy to step over it.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: And you know what I mean.
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: For there's certain people at certain parts of their sobriety
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: that it's not a very strong thing, you know, And
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: so it's good to set a better example.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: So this is my buddy Jimmy Dorn's bar Radio Bars
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: is messing with you that they got this bar shirt on.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: No, I don't care. You're like, You're like, where exactly
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: is that bar?
- 1:00:30Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: I got a plenty of bars. What how old were you?
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: Did you start drinking really young? Yeah, pretty young, like
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: probably fifteen or so. That's how it was.
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: Yeah, we didn't. Yeah, where I grew up, we didn't.
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: There wasn't not that there wasn't drugs were not. Alcohol
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: was the thing. Yeah, pretty much for us too, in
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: high school and stuff. It was like, I'm sure there was.
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: I'm like, you know, there's probably stuff I didn't know about.
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: For the most part. Where I grew up, you had
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: we we would develop in our community. We would develop
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: very serious drinkers by seventeen eighteen years old. We would
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: develop daily drinkers by seventeen eighteen years old. Of the
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: guys I've graduated high school with, there were a number
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: that were daily drinkers. Yeah, at that age. And then
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: buddies of my now are like, man, it's just not
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: that it's like it's edibles and stuff now.
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: It's like a lot of weed now. But it's not
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: like that in those rural areas anymore, you know. But
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: Starting young, yeah, everybody drink and drink all day, like drink,
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: like it was not uncommon for people that I know
- 1:01:36Speaker 5: to drink beer all day and work and stuff like.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: It's I mean a lot of it.
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: I guess it was probably their days off that I
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: was around them. You know, probably my days off too,
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: But it seems so much like a lot of day drinking.
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: Would you probably not even gotten into music if it
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: wasn't for drinking, nocuse they could go hand in hand, man.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: I don't know, Probably not, maybe not.
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: I mean, I wouldn't take for anything I've you know,
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: I wouldn't do it again, but you know I wouldn't.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: I wouldn't take for it.
- 1:02:05Speaker 5: I'm really happy with where I'm at. But yeah, I
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: think that partying and stuff like that would have had
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: a big impact on me playing.
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: I mean, I just because you would.
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: Have never gotten you'd never gotten drawn into the you
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: wouldn't have gotten drawn into the nightlife, like like starting
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: out in music, it's a nightlife.
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: And then the nightlife would have been intolerable if you
- 1:02:28Speaker 5: were just a straight, lace sober guy. You know, it's
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: not for it's for other people.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: I don't mean the reference nor McDonald's twice, but Norm
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: McDonald has a whole bit about going out to the
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: bars after you quit drinking. Oh yeah, exactly, and.
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: Then he like talks about hooking up and how awkward
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: it is when you're not drinking. Well, man, I'll be
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: putting on my trousers now. Just how hard it is
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: the goal of life with all your drinker bodies. Did
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: I when you got to where you didn't want to
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: play anymore?
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: What was going on?
- 1:03:08Speaker 5: That was kind of so I was kind of trying
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: to figure out life in general, and I mean I
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: was burnt out on playing. That was all I had
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: done from the time I was you know, from the
- 1:03:19Speaker 5: time I was twenty four or so, until the time
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: I was about thirty four, for about ten years. I
- 1:03:24Speaker 5: mean that's all I thought about all I did and playing,
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: not just performing, but just like on the road. Yeah right,
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: So okay, so for you, playing is the road? Yeah correct,
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: I got you. Yeah, And you know, part of it,
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: there was a long sort of romantic period there where
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: I rode a lot. I was very creative, you know.
- 1:03:41Speaker 5: I mean alcohol had that effect on me at that
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: point in time. And then and then it didn't, you know,
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: and we were in the bars four or five nights
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: a week and everything just was nuts. And so I thought, well,
- 1:03:58Speaker 5: I get off the road. Problem will solve itself. You know,
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: I changed my sort of my schedule. Yeah, then I
- 1:04:05Speaker 5: can fix that. And plus I wanted to learn there's
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: so much more to the life than being in the
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: bars playing music and all this sort of base level stuff,
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: So you know, I wanted to I went back. I
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: went down there, and uh worked for Justin at the
- 1:04:24Speaker 5: Rice form in whatever capacity I could. And then we
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: started messing more with cattle and building fence and this
- 1:04:30Speaker 5: and that.
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: And so when you you.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: When you walked away and went down, you walked away
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: and like literally went down and started working. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: what was your what was your financial situation though you
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: were set or not?
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: Said?
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: I was good enough. I didn't have a lot of bills,
- 1:04:45Speaker 5: so yeah, I was good enough. I didn't have kids
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: at that point in time, and so jesus, Yeah, and.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: You guys like deleted all your social media stuff and everything.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: I think, I don't know. I wasn't part of that
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: you did. Yeah, So and then what happened down there.
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: Then I realized that I wasn't drinking too much because
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: I was on the road. I was drinking too much
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: because you're drinking because I was an alcoholic.
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: Oddly enough, God, Yeah, so it wasn't the bars after all.
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: No, they certainly had their hand in it, but it
- 1:05:20Speaker 5: was time to make another big change. And so so
- 1:05:23Speaker 5: once I realized that I couldn't, you know, control that
- 1:05:27Speaker 5: I went to. I had a buddy of mine, like
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: a somebody that I look up to, a BRONC rider guy.
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: And he was the first person that I'd ever known
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: that actually went to like any kind of treatment and
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: had success in that, and like his life just immediately
- 1:05:42Speaker 5: got better and he was a happy dude and was
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: better at everything that he did. And so he said, hey,
- 1:05:50Speaker 5: I got a spot for you, like it's you'll just
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: go to this place where I went, And I went
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: and did it like a ninety day deal and changed
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: my life.
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: And was that ninety day deal just done? Like you
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: walk in the door and you're not gonna drink yep, yep.
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: You sit out the parking lot for a minute. No,
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: he's walked right in yep yep. And uh and you
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: stay there, m M, what do you do for ninety days?
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: It's so fun.
- 1:06:19Speaker 5: Uh, it's just a lot of classes and learning about
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: addiction in general. And uh so they tell you what
- 1:06:26Speaker 5: it is. Yeah, and for an kind of halfway analytical
- 1:06:29Speaker 5: guy like me.
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: That's what it took.
- 1:06:30Speaker 5: You know, that helped me to understand sort of some
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: physiology stuff and the understand what habits are and.
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: What's going on. And uh yeah, so it was.
- 1:06:44Speaker 5: It was pretty boring, but it's but it's also like
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: you have to rewire your entire being because I'm like
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: this maniac who's coming out of the bars and can
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: do ad for ten years, could do anything you wanted
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: to at any given time of any day. So I
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: have to learn responsibility. And I'm very lucky that I
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: got to do that before I had kids, because now
- 1:07:05Speaker 5: I got two little ones and they do annoy.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: Me in the mornings.
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: But it's but you know, at least I'm not hungover
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: and Matt Adham, you know, so it's it's lucky.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: Are you familiar with that long running show Fresh Air
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: with the host Terry Gross.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: I'm familiar. Have you ever done that show? I've never
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: done it? Like to.
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: She had a neural she had a neuroscientist on or
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: like a I don't know, does that mean a brain
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: scientist Randall? Randall's got a PhD in history, that means
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: a brain doctor?
- 1:07:37Speaker 6: Yes, yes, Well a neurologyst A doctor would be a neurologist.
- 1:07:41Speaker 6: A neuroscientist, I think would be like a researcher.
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: That's what this person was.
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: They studied addictions, and they studied the effects of different
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: chemicals on your brain. And she said that she was
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: talking about the ways that things were what they do
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: in you. And she talked about it like cocaine is
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: has a like a laser intensity what it does, and
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: the chemically is doing a very specific thing inside your head, right,
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: like a very precise specific thing cocaine does. And then
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: she said, so it's like a laser burning in there.
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: And then.
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: We she described it as spilling paint on something. And
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: then she said, alcohol is someone in there with a hammer.
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: How it's affecting a lot of a lot of parts.
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: Yeah, and then the physiology part of it too, you
- 1:08:42Speaker 5: know you see, Yeah, it's it's a and it's such
- 1:08:46Speaker 5: an ubiquitous thing, like it's just everywhere and and so
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: widely accepted that that being addicted to it has its
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: own name, Like you're an addict, right, it's just a drug,
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: but you're an alcoholic because it's more accepted sure culturally.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: Yeah, if someone says, someone's a drug addic. I hope
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: you don't shoot me. Yeah, Oh, it's just an alcoholic.
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: That's cool.
- 1:09:15Speaker 7: It's the world over. You can be in a small
- 1:09:18Speaker 7: village in uh South America and guess what someone's brewing
- 1:09:22Speaker 7: up some booze.
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: I was talking to a woman there day we were camping,
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: not the other day. I was talking to a woman
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: a couple months ago, camping and she had.
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: Done seven years in the Federal penitentiary and h she
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: was on the laundry crew. So she was a laundress
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: in prison. And they would get they would they would
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: get fruit juice from the cafeteria and they were able
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: to put they'd get these I don't know what they
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: were using for containers, but they found out how to
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: put that fruit juice by the dryer event because that
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: dryer is running around the clock and it is real warm.
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: A minute.
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: Yeah, she was saying, man, we were able to from that,
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: we were able to make booze into jail behind the dryer.
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: Wow, it's like you need some booze, bad dude. Evan,
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: what was your drink of choice back then? I drank beer.
- 1:10:27Speaker 5: I drink Mexican beer a lot of the time, but
- 1:10:30Speaker 5: for years it was just cheap beer whatever, like keystone
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: or whatever.
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: Did you uh did you have to relearn how to
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: come up with stuff? Oh?
- 1:10:37Speaker 5: Yeah, everything, I had to. I had to learn a
- 1:10:40Speaker 5: lot because like so much, so much of your developmental
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: life you were relying on alcohol. You think about drinking
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: when from the time you're fifteen on and how much
- 1:10:51Speaker 5: you actually developed physically and mentally with that chemical kicking
- 1:10:58Speaker 5: around in your body.
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: You know this person I'm talking about, this neuroscientist.
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: Can you hold your thought?
- 1:11:05Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: That's the other thing that really surprised me is when
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: you if you start if you start really boozing hard before,
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: if you start boozing before eighteen, your whole mental map
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: is different because when you think of little kids, like
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: you're still trying to establish not kids at whatever, hell
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: high schoolers. Your brain is still trying to establish a baseline,
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: right of all this hormonal activity and like how much
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: of this to produce and how much of that to produce?
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: And you're throwing that thing so out of whack at
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: a developmental phase that you create an abnormal normal you're
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: normal of like what it feels to be run at normal.
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: It's built on that pedestal.
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: And so people if you look at like later you
- 1:11:59Speaker 3: look at alcoholism rates. When you start drinking as a teenager,
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: you're creating a much greater likelihood of being a drunk
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: later in life because you've set your like you've set
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: yourself up for she was about there are very few
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: You can't find cases of people who don't drink and
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: start drinking at forty and become an alcoholic.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it don't happen. Got you gotta develop it like
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: a fine wine.
- 1:12:28Speaker 13: It's a long journey.
- 1:12:29Speaker 5: What's funny about that too, is that there was a
- 1:12:32Speaker 5: period of time like after I quit drinking that I like,
- 1:12:37Speaker 5: there's so much emotional maturity, like you you still develop,
- 1:12:42Speaker 5: it's neat Like, so I spent these sort of very
- 1:12:47Speaker 5: formative years in my thirties like learning sort of how
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: to be a man whatever, you know, like be trustworthy
- 1:12:55Speaker 5: and do do these things correctly, and to sort of
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: be the guy that you know that I want to
- 1:13:01Speaker 5: be now around like those people in Southeast Texas that
- 1:13:05Speaker 5: I sort of look up to. But but it was
- 1:13:08Speaker 5: certainly you could feel it, like there were a couple
- 1:13:10Speaker 5: of years where I felt like I grew up emotionally,
- 1:13:14Speaker 5: you know, it became a different.
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: Post became an adult post alcohol. Yeah, it's so strange.
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: So you wait, you raided your trustworthiness and found it
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: to be low.
- 1:13:24Speaker 5: Oh sure, yeah, yeah I guess so. I mean I
- 1:13:27Speaker 5: was a like now, if I say I'm going to
- 1:13:30Speaker 5: do something, I typically unless something falls apart, I do it,
- 1:13:35Speaker 5: even if it's hopefully, even if it's something small. But
- 1:13:39Speaker 5: back then I didn't care. You know, when I might
- 1:13:43Speaker 5: show up, I might not.
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: What I was sa on earlier about being in grad school,
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: it's like I was in writing school. So this is
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: everybody just and everybody read drinkers, you know, like yeah,
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: so you know everybody wants everybody's going to be an
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: avant guarde writer.
- 1:13:58Speaker 9: You know.
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: I was that kind of like a like a high
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: end writing program. And so everybody read like Raymond Carver
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: and Charles Bikowski and you know, and all the drug
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: addicts and right, and uh so it's super cool to drink.
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: And you talk about like the trustworthiness. There used to
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: be a running joke.
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: Man at at one in the morning in the bar,
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: everybody was going ice fishing in the morning at seven
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: when you're supposed to meet at my house crickets except
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: for a dude named Ben Block. If you're out there,
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: Ben Ben Block would be.
- 1:14:36Speaker 5: There him away line, It's like, oh, always do what
- 1:14:43Speaker 5: you say you're gonna do drunk. It'll keep teach you
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: to keep your mouth shut or whatever.
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: This dude Ben, he was a painter and uh, he
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: didn't grow up doing any kind of serious outdoor stuff.
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: But I took him out of ice fishing. He was
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: a he's a really good painter, and that took him
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: out of fish and we pulled a big northern up
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: through a hole in the ice and he said it
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: was why it said it was like watching the lake
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: give birth.
- 1:15:14Speaker 15: Oh buddy, I like that guy.
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: What uh on? Other eyes are vation?
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: Because I want to get back into what it's like
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: to write tunes when you gotta do it totally differently.
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: But the thing I miss my wife talks about it too,
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: is how funny everything was.
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: Stuff is not funny like that anymore. Yeah, but there
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: is funny stuff like that out there. You just have
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: to pursue it. So it's like, oh, tell me, tell
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: me where to find that.
- 1:15:44Speaker 9: I can.
- 1:15:45Speaker 5: But you know, like the average stuff is not as fun,
- 1:15:50Speaker 5: but it's stuff that you don't need to be doing anyway,
- 1:15:52Speaker 5: you know, like sitting around on tailgate bullshitting with people
- 1:15:55Speaker 5: that you have know or whatever.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: Like, yeah, like that's a lot funny.
- 1:15:58Speaker 5: That's not good necessarily good to come but he and
- 1:16:00Speaker 5: not good use of your time, right, But I do
- 1:16:06Speaker 5: like like you, you've had some good billy left, like
- 1:16:09Speaker 5: on these big like hunting trips that you go on
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: with your buddies or whatever.
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, not as many. I get it. But so
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: when you, uh, how did you get back into writing though?
- 1:16:22Speaker 5: I set a deadline and I said I'd do it
- 1:16:26Speaker 5: because I knew.
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: Was not your trustworthy anyways. Yeah, I told him, I
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: do it sadly, you said, I pay my bills on time,
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: and uh now I So we.
- 1:16:41Speaker 5: Decided we wanted to go back in the studio. We
- 1:16:42Speaker 5: played some have we played some shows already Patty before
- 1:16:46Speaker 5: we decided to do the record, or we decided to
- 1:16:48Speaker 5: do the record before.
- 1:16:50Speaker 12: Oh hey sorry this is uh yeah, this Patty, I'm
- 1:16:55Speaker 12: Turnpike's manager. We we had set out that we were
- 1:16:59Speaker 12: going to we were going to record, but we were
- 1:17:02Speaker 12: going to do some shows before we recorded.
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: Got it and you had to do, like in the
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: beginning of the Blues Brothers movie, you had to get the.
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: Band back together. Yeah, it's exactly like that. You had
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: to go around. I found them wherever they were assembled.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: My crew.
- 1:17:21Speaker 5: Yeah, No, we were all ready to We stayed pretty
- 1:17:25Speaker 5: close and so we Yeah, we just set some dates
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: and I just did what I could and just hammered
- 1:17:33Speaker 5: and hammered and hammered at it until something felt good,
- 1:17:40Speaker 5: felt like I could be proud of it.
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: Maybe so you had like I gotta I gotta do
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: twelve or whatever the hell it is.
- 1:17:45Speaker 5: Yeah, And I just got as many as I could.
- 1:17:48Speaker 5: But I'm in doing that kind of learned how to
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: do it again and learned what I like and what
- 1:17:56Speaker 5: I'm after.
- 1:17:57Speaker 6: Was it something that you missed after a while of
- 1:18:01Speaker 6: being away from it, Like it built up that you
- 1:18:03Speaker 6: hadn't scratched this this creative itch. I mean, you're obviously
- 1:18:08Speaker 6: focused on other things, but like after a certain period
- 1:18:11Speaker 6: of time away from it, like you felt like you
- 1:18:13Speaker 6: had to go back to it or what was that
- 1:18:15Speaker 6: sort of relationship with the craft?
- 1:18:19Speaker 5: Like like I think if I'd known it was off
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: the table forever, I would have missed it. But No,
- 1:18:27Speaker 5: it always felt like I'd come back to it. So
- 1:18:32Speaker 5: and there's certain aspects of it that are really really neat,
- 1:18:34Speaker 5: like that connection with a big audience like that and
- 1:18:36Speaker 5: singing singing together with like that many people at once
- 1:18:40Speaker 5: is very very interesting. I mean it's such a Yeah,
- 1:18:44Speaker 5: it's such a neat moment to get to have.
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: But you uh does it with that with those kind
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: of numbers though it probably loses.
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: Ah, it's not as.
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: When when you're with a ton of people, the awkwardness
- 1:19:01Speaker 3: probably goes away because there's nothing super like like if
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: we made you sing a song and here, for instance,
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: I'd be very scared, but.
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: You wouldn't be one. It's one of thousands of me.
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: Not as much.
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: No, it's not as And there are even like situations
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: where the you know, the right people in the room
- 1:19:18Speaker 5: with ten or fifteen people would be the scariest to do.
- 1:19:21Speaker 5: If it's somebody wanted to impress or whatever, you know.
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: Like all your musical heroes. Sure like kick us out
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: a song Evan about yeah yeah. And when you when
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: you went on hiatus, you had done you had done
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: four albums, Yes, you.
- 1:19:40Speaker 5: Had something like that for four and then Bosuer City
- 1:19:43Speaker 5: I think yeah, first one.
- 1:19:45Speaker 3: And then uh, I was reading too that you had,
- 1:19:47Speaker 3: Uh when you got back into writing, you'd established like
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: a with one of your bandmates. You were sharing writing prompts.
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: Is this the thing?
- 1:19:58Speaker 9: Oh?
- 1:19:58Speaker 5: That was Jamie Wilson. So she had a book and
- 1:20:01Speaker 5: it's really cool. It's called this Isn't that?
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: Rolling Stone Interview?
- 1:20:05Speaker 5: Yeah, she pro talked about it and we Yeah, so
- 1:20:09Speaker 5: it was a series of writing prompts and this and
- 1:20:11Speaker 5: that and you just in a book. Yeah, And so
- 1:20:13Speaker 5: we both got the book and we were both like
- 1:20:15Speaker 5: going through.
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: It together, just what we will be an example?
- 1:20:18Speaker 5: Oh, man, i'd have to it's been a couple of years,
- 1:20:21Speaker 5: but I think one of them was just like rite
- 1:20:24Speaker 5: for ten seconds, or not wright for ten seconds, but
- 1:20:27Speaker 5: like right for sixty seconds on this subject in whatever
- 1:20:31Speaker 5: way you can.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: And it was just like cyclist and so.
- 1:20:35Speaker 8: You d a story.
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: So that's you guys, and that's where we were. That's
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: one example. You know. When I read it, I.
- 1:20:40Speaker 3: Took it to be that that you guys would send
- 1:20:43Speaker 3: each other prompts that you'd come up with the.
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: It was like a writing exercise. But that helped you
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: get back into it. Yeah, it did.
- 1:20:50Speaker 5: Honestly, it's I want to go back and go back
- 1:20:53Speaker 5: through that book.
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: It's pretty neat.
- 1:20:55Speaker 3: So where things at? Where things at now? I mean
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: are you are you? Do you picture that you want
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: to do music for twenty more years? Or I mean
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: yeah you do, yeah, but you'll do it as long
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: as you can do it.
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: Yeah, how was it?
- 1:21:09Speaker 4: I grew up, you know, listening to my dad's whaling
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: records and then by the yeah, I came into the Shooter.
- 1:21:15Speaker 4: Yeah era, how much did he? Like was the magic
- 1:21:20Speaker 4: in this new LP?
- 1:21:21Speaker 5: He's a he's just a really nice guy and like
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: he's one of those people that music is it for him,
- 1:21:28Speaker 5: Like he loves it, like he loves he knows every record,
- 1:21:32Speaker 5: he knows who produced it, he knows who played on it,
- 1:21:34Speaker 5: Like that's his like life, life makes sense.
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: Were about we're talking about Shooter and.
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: So having somebody like that that that's just that's that,
- 1:21:45Speaker 5: that passionate about it and that well versed and everything.
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: Was it was amazing. How does the relationship like that
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: come up?
- 1:21:54Speaker 3: But how did that? How did that come to be?
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: Had you guys always been bodies or.
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: Something kind of Yeah?
- 1:21:58Speaker 5: We were, we were acquaintances and we, I mean, we
- 1:22:01Speaker 5: liked each other, and then the opportunity came up and
- 1:22:06Speaker 5: he'd been doing you know, just Tanya Tuckers. Yeah, and
- 1:22:10Speaker 5: you could just there's so much stuff just right there,
- 1:22:12Speaker 5: Handy that you could listen to and say, hey, this
- 1:22:14Speaker 5: is really really great quality. And he got really good
- 1:22:17Speaker 5: performances out of these people, Like why why not work
- 1:22:19Speaker 5: with him?
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: You know? And uh, what's your like, what's your next
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: project gonna be? I don't know, We'll just do another
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: studio album probably, And now just are you baking on that? Yeah?
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: Trying to, but nothing major first of more beating would
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: probably wind up in one of.
- 1:22:40Speaker 7: Them down here in Oklahoma. Yeah, but I do have
- 1:22:44Speaker 7: a question on that you mentioned earlier that, uh, you
- 1:22:47Speaker 7: kind of you'd be wary maybe of like the cowboy
- 1:22:50Speaker 7: genre a little bit to be so easy to beat hokey,
- 1:22:53Speaker 7: and I feel like throwing in some hunting stuff into
- 1:22:56Speaker 7: your tunes could probably have some of those same pitfalls,
- 1:22:59Speaker 7: like are you are you mindful that as you're writing.
- 1:23:03Speaker 5: It could yeah, you have to be like, yeah, it
- 1:23:05Speaker 5: could be. It could come across as silly or like
- 1:23:08Speaker 5: I'm forcing something, but like bird hunting, such a thing
- 1:23:11Speaker 5: for me, Like it's something something that i've I fell
- 1:23:16Speaker 5: in love with, like pretty naturally, and I've I quit.
- 1:23:20Speaker 5: So I coon hunted for a long time and I
- 1:23:23Speaker 5: got tired of being out late, so I sort of
- 1:23:26Speaker 5: just traded that for for a pointer.
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: Did you train your own dogs? Yeah? You ever on
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: in the woods? Running? You a guy named Clay Nukem.
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: I don't know you guys? Are you guys are border mates?
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: He was right across in the Arkansas oh really using
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: the washtalls. You might have heard his hounds across state line.
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: Probably probably.
- 1:23:49Speaker 9: I had.
- 1:23:51Speaker 5: I have both, and I think I want to say
- 1:23:55Speaker 5: I had a red tick dog or two. I never
- 1:23:57Speaker 5: had any real good ones ran. We ran a lot
- 1:23:59Speaker 5: of deer.
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: We were out late a lot, and we also drink
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: a lot of beer. I was out. We're not quite
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: sure whose place you round some of the times, probably,
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: but you know most of it was was public, so okay,
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: oh yeah, because the warehouse has had a lot of
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: public Okay, I see, yeah, so we had plenty of
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: places to go, but yeah, it was just Now would
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: you ever throw in a coonhound reference? Probably subtle? I have,
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: I did on this record.
- 1:24:27Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I heard that about the place in the bottoms.
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: Yeah, you know.
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: We were always raised. We had the shotgun as you
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: come from my mom's dad and.
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: My dad.
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: So my mom's dad had had it, but my dad
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: wound up with it. And he had always told people
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: it was Belgium. It was a Browning auto whatever that four.
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: I don't think he always told everybody it.
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: Was Belgium made. Yeah, because you guys have you have
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: that reference and uh, when you die he looked up
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: the serial number.
- 1:25:04Speaker 11: Was not.
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: That's a That's the thing man that I like is uh,
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: it winds up being.
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: We're talking to We talked to Luke Combs about this
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: once and he's got a song you know, he talks
- 1:25:18Speaker 3: about like a Johnson outboard.
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:25:21Speaker 3: He'd be like, well, you know, obviously it's not gonna
- 1:25:24Speaker 3: be a right, it's not gonna be at not.
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: I mean, I own I own five Honda four strokes.
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: I have four stroke jet which I adore and would
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: like I'd rather give up my kid than my Yeahmaha jet. Right,
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: But you have the right song. I thought it was.
- 1:25:47Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like a weird choice to throwing that it's
- 1:25:49Speaker 3: a Belgium because it's like there's like about two people
- 1:25:53Speaker 3: who'd be like, Oh, I get that.
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's.
- 1:25:56Speaker 5: Just I don't know, that's just like a like what
- 1:26:00Speaker 5: they'd say, what the guy would say or whatever.
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: No, Yeah, I know. It's interesting when you have something
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: that's like references that are not references that are that
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: have the potential of being missed.
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: Yeah, the thing it like hearkens back to like a
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: time period, because like what that'd be something my grandfather
- 1:26:18Speaker 4: or father would say.
- 1:26:19Speaker 13: You wouldn't hear Belgium may as much now?
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:26:22Speaker 6: I feel like there's sometimes when you hear hunting and
- 1:26:25Speaker 6: fishing or outdoor references and songs, it's like something that.
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: It's so superficial. It's like a T shirt or a.
- 1:26:34Speaker 6: Bumper sticker slogan, and you're like, Oh, does that person
- 1:26:38Speaker 6: hunter fish or did someone say add a hunting and
- 1:26:41Speaker 6: fishing line in there? Yeah, talk about a big buck
- 1:26:45Speaker 6: or something like that.
- 1:26:46Speaker 3: Do you tend to go out of your way to
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: put more in or go out your way to take
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: them out?
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: What's that like? Hunting references?
- 1:26:53Speaker 5: I typically write about hunting because I've I write about
- 1:26:57Speaker 5: it as like a a background for a transitional thing,
- 1:27:04Speaker 5: you know, for a story like it's just happens to
- 1:27:06Speaker 5: be what they're doing because it's interesting and things are
- 1:27:11Speaker 5: moving around on the album. Now you're talking about going
- 1:27:15Speaker 5: to el hunting.
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: With the with the booze and the saddle bags, right, remembering, Yeah,
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: it's just kind of coming to a realization or a
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: couple of an a's and the saddle bags.
- 1:27:30Speaker 5: Yeah, shake them up though, beer and saddlebags don't go
- 1:27:37Speaker 5: where you get together.
- 1:27:38Speaker 3: When I was asked about do you find taking them
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: out or putting them in? I mean if you get
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: where you got something where it's close to what you want,
- 1:27:45Speaker 3: do you sometimes say to yourself, Man, I need to
- 1:27:48Speaker 3: lighten up. You know, I'm gonna pull a couple of
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: those out. I'm gonna pull some of that hunting fish
- 1:27:53Speaker 3: and stuff out.
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: Or do you look and be like I need to
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: put more, I need to get heavier. Yeah, so you
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: catch it. It needs to be a little more like Yeah,
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: it needs to be a little more like clear.
- 1:28:04Speaker 5: Well, it's like if what if the story is just
- 1:28:06Speaker 5: kind of boring and then I just put it in
- 1:28:09Speaker 5: a hunting backdrop and then it's there's more happening so
- 1:28:13Speaker 5: it's more interesting.
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, uh, we've talked a lot about you
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: know how No Country for Old Men feels like, you know,
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: it's like feels like a hunting book for only one reason.
- 1:28:32Speaker 3: When he finds that massacre site, right, he's blood trailing,
- 1:28:37Speaker 3: and he completely forgets about the blood trail.
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: Yep, there's no reference to it.
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: We actually hunt or Spenser new Heart did a little
- 1:28:46Speaker 3: work on it, and he was almost certainly poaching.
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: There's no way he would have drawn that tag.
- 1:28:52Speaker 3: But either way, it's just like he's like he had
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: to be doing a thing when he finds.
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: The money, you know, and he's like, I'll have him.
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: I guess what would make sense he was hunting, But
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: it like burns in your head, like that first scene,
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: and then for somehow they could carries with it that
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: it's like this thing about hunting and you look at
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: it and you're like, well, no, it's just it's just
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: like you said, I needed to have them doing a thing.
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: He blood trails himself.
- 1:29:19Speaker 5: Into you know, the thelp, the murder. You know it's
- 1:29:23Speaker 5: a or a massacre or whatever. But yeah, it's just
- 1:29:27Speaker 5: brilliant stuff and he'd be doing it anyway, or like that.
- 1:29:29Speaker 5: Lou Ellen characters. You know he's going to be out
- 1:29:32Speaker 5: doing something, stayed away from the house, right, you know
- 1:29:35Speaker 5: it's goods.
- 1:29:37Speaker 6: This story would have felt very different if you found
- 1:29:39Speaker 6: money on the way to work.
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: Had a job that he really likes and he worked
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: hard for. So what do you guys got? What's your
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: what's your tour situation? Right now?
- 1:29:54Speaker 5: It's we we play quite a bit. I mean, we're
- 1:29:56Speaker 5: just staying steady throughout the year.
- 1:29:58Speaker 11: Now.
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: We some than specific.
- 1:30:00Speaker 5: If you, oh, we have a show in Oklahoma in January,
- 1:30:05Speaker 5: I think that we are. Yeah, is Bell's playing with
- 1:30:08Speaker 5: us and Charles Wesley Godwin not un till January.
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: That's in January? Is that? Is that a? Is that
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: part of a big tour or what?
- 1:30:19Speaker 15: Oh?
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: Yeah, we're playing Florida this weekend. Oh okay, So was that? Man?
- 1:30:24Speaker 13: I don't know. You got Knoxville November sixteenth?
- 1:30:27Speaker 15: I was.
- 1:30:28Speaker 13: And you guys try to fire So you're not going now.
- 1:30:31Speaker 13: I'm gonna try to get this meal here.
- 1:30:34Speaker 3: So if you see an empty seat out there, that fella.
- 1:30:39Speaker 3: So you're not you're not on a like a very
- 1:30:41Speaker 3: you're not. You don't have upcoming right now or anything,
- 1:30:43Speaker 3: A very scheduled, like, you know, five night a week.
- 1:30:47Speaker 5: Now it'll be like three nights here, maybe a weekend off.
- 1:30:50Speaker 5: It could be four or five knights. But it's all
- 1:30:53Speaker 5: pretty haphazard.
- 1:30:54Speaker 3: You know, how many will you want to, like if
- 1:30:55Speaker 3: in the next calendar year, what would be your guess
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: how many shows you'll do?
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: Oh, I don't know. Fifty five of course not.
- 1:31:05Speaker 5: It's a lot, though, it's plenty. Yeah, it's cool to
- 1:31:08Speaker 5: get to be home every week having little kids like that.
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: Sure. Do you bring your kids out on the road.
- 1:31:13Speaker 5: Some sometimes now that we have too, it's been trickier so,
- 1:31:18Speaker 5: but not like out on the road like sometimes Stacey
- 1:31:20Speaker 5: brings them to Steve or whatever. Yeah, you bring your
- 1:31:27Speaker 5: family on the bus. Now we're all we got a
- 1:31:30Speaker 5: big crew. And yeah, you'd almost have to have your
- 1:31:33Speaker 5: own setup for that.
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: Mm hm. The Kren talking about playing something she maybe did,
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: I don't know. I brought a guitar, So you don't
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: mind doing it? No, I don't think so. But it's
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: gonna be all it'll be awkward for you because it's
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: so intimate in here. Probably intimate and warm, yeah and warm. Yeah,
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: but a lot of them concert halls it is sometimes, Yeah,
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: what are you gonna play?
- 1:32:00Speaker 9: I don't know.
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: I thought I might play bird Hunters. Do that Okay?
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: People like wonderful? Well cal would like it.
- 1:32:06Speaker 7: Oh, he's gonna be bummed.
- 1:32:08Speaker 3: Well, why don't we set us all up, Phil, Phil's
- 1:32:10Speaker 3: probably want to do some little things.
- 1:32:11Speaker 14: Yeah, Hunter, if we can just get like a mic
- 1:32:14Speaker 14: kind of relatively close to his guitar, and then he
- 1:32:16Speaker 14: can sing into that one. If we can angle that
- 1:32:17Speaker 14: one down. And while we're filling time, here is anyone,
- 1:32:20Speaker 14: here's some Killers of the Flower Moon yet.
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: No, But I feel like I feel like I'm just
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: getting bombarded by Oklahoma because I was, Yeah.
- 1:32:27Speaker 14: I saw it this weekend, and it's funny because Scorsese
- 1:32:29Speaker 14: put a bunch of musicians in there, like Isabelle's in there,
- 1:32:32Speaker 14: Surgel Simpson, Pete Jordan, like Jason isbel is incredible. If
- 1:32:35Speaker 14: he didn't know he wasn't a musician, you'd be like, oh,
- 1:32:37Speaker 14: who's this awesome character actor.
- 1:32:38Speaker 8: But I was just thinking because.
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: He plays one of the victims husbands or something.
- 1:32:41Speaker 14: Yeah, and he's uh, he's got scenes with Leo and
- 1:32:44Speaker 14: he like steals the scene. It's really he's greaty, But
- 1:32:46Speaker 14: I was just thinking because Evan would have fit like
- 1:32:48Speaker 14: right in there. He's just got that vibe that I
- 1:32:50Speaker 14: think Scorsese was looking totally.
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, we had the author of that book
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: sitting right where you sit. David Grant was in here,
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: really yeah, he sat right there. Man.
- 1:33:00Speaker 15: Charlie Crockett wrote the theme song for it too, but he.
- 1:33:03Speaker 3: Was David Grant was here promoting not He wasn't promoting
- 1:33:07Speaker 3: Killers of the Flower Moon.
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: He was promoting the wager. Oh man, I don't know
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: if this thing's in tune? Is that okay?
- 1:33:13Speaker 3: If I wouldn't know, don't you got that app on
- 1:33:17Speaker 3: your phone? I thought I was gonna turn you onto
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: that app.
- 1:33:36Speaker 10: Covey to wing the shotguns, singing the pun Dog down
- 1:33:44Speaker 10: the old log and road, and Danny got three and
- 1:33:50Speaker 10: look back grinning, fumbled around and tried to reload. The
- 1:33:58Speaker 10: country was old, where the sun and west were sinking.
- 1:34:03Speaker 10: It's good to be back in.
- 1:34:06Speaker 9: This place.
- 1:34:08Speaker 10: With my hands around the Belgian may brown and my
- 1:34:15Speaker 10: mind on the lines.
- 1:34:17Speaker 9: Of her face.
- 1:34:23Speaker 10: How good does it feel you belong in these heels.
- 1:34:28Speaker 10: It's best that you let it all in. You to
- 1:34:34Speaker 10: married that girl, you to married her family. When you
- 1:34:40Speaker 10: Dard's day bullet, my friend, she said, go on back
- 1:34:50Speaker 10: to chair Key County. Won't you crawl back with nothing
- 1:34:56Speaker 10: butter raiser and cone.
- 1:34:58Speaker 9: He's a baby.
- 1:35:00Speaker 10: If you need me, I'll be where you foundly.
- 1:35:04Speaker 9: And go on the hell honey.
- 1:35:07Speaker 10: I'm headed home, dancers. Look at old Jim, a dozen
- 1:35:21Speaker 10: decembers behind.
- 1:35:23Speaker 9: Him, No worse for the wear.
- 1:35:28Speaker 10: Your time spinning Tosa did not help your shooting. Look
- 1:35:34Speaker 10: at the gray in your hair. How good does it
- 1:35:41Speaker 10: feel you belong in these heels. It's best that you
- 1:35:46Speaker 10: let it all in. You to marry that girl, you
- 1:35:53Speaker 10: to marry the family who you dodge a bullet? My friend,
- 1:36:04Speaker 10: she said, go on back to Chaerkey can. Won't you
- 1:36:10Speaker 10: crawl back with nothing but the razor and calm?
- 1:36:16Speaker 9: Sad baby?
- 1:36:17Speaker 10: If you need me, I'll be where you found me,
- 1:36:21Speaker 10: and go on the hell honey, I'm headed home. On
- 1:36:34Speaker 10: hours beginning to deal with it in and the old
- 1:36:40Speaker 10: dog upon it and card me died. Then a flutter
- 1:36:50Speaker 10: of feathers, then a shotgun shoulder. I thought of the
- 1:36:56Speaker 10: poor Jesi. She be home on the fourth July, but
- 1:37:05Speaker 10: we dance on.
- 1:37:07Speaker 9: The fourth July.
- 1:37:40Speaker 10: Then says Hella, a shot, looks like you still got it.
- 1:37:47Speaker 9: That's what we came here to do.
- 1:37:51Speaker 10: Well, it's live enough still at the foot of the hill.
- 1:37:57Speaker 10: You could kick up a single orch, she said. Co
- 1:38:08Speaker 10: on back to Chairkee County, won't you crawl back with
- 1:38:13Speaker 10: nothing but Raizor and Comb says baby.
- 1:38:18Speaker 9: If you need me, I'll.
- 1:38:20Speaker 10: Be where you found me and go on to hell Honey.
- 1:38:26Speaker 9: I'm headed home, and go on to Hell honey. I'm
- 1:38:32Speaker 9: heading home.
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: All right. Man, beautiful bang got goosebumps, ladies and gentleman
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: terrifight troubador. It sounds like you have fifty five opportunities
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: to catch them in the next calendar year at least,
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: and lots of albums to choose from. Uh, anywhere you
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: listen to music, go on Spotify and listen to a
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: bunch of you can go on YouTube and listen to
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: a bunch of stuff. You can buy the actual things.
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: Come to show and buy CD, come to show and buy,
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: Dig up that old CD from the old days and
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: sell it as a collector's item. I've considered it. And
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: of course, uh, you know.
- 1:39:16Speaker 3: If you're if you're tuning into your to your FM dial,
- 1:39:19Speaker 3: you will likely pick up some tunes as well, but
- 1:39:21Speaker 3: the best thing to do is go check them out
- 1:39:22Speaker 3: live over the next over the next year, and throw
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: some support.
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: Thank you very much for coming on man, I really
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: appreciate it. That was great. Thanks a lot
