Latest / Daebak K-Rambles Podcast: K-drama Reviews / Squid Game (S3) | Full K-drama Review / Ep. 96
Transcript
- 0:19I'm Jessica and this is Teba K Rambles, where a couple of
- 0:22friends review Korean dramas and we are back to finish off this
- 0:27saga that we started years ago. We are reviewing Squid Game
- 0:33Season 3 and I'm joined by my good friend Miguel once again.
- 0:37Miguel, how are you? How you been?
- 0:41Thanks for having me. How you doing?
- 0:43I'm all right as all right as I can.
- 0:45Right, right. We're as put together as we can
- 0:49be under the circumstances. But yeah, for those who are just
- 0:53joining right now, me and Miguel have basically been reviewing
- 0:57Squid Game each season when it comes out on the Tabak feed.
- 1:02And we've had a long journey. And now that it's finished, we
- 1:08are back to give our conclusion. Thoughts.
- 1:12There will be no more Korean Squid Games.
- 1:14So we figured we would just come back and do this.
- 1:17I fully intended to do this later after my big family
- 1:21vacation, which is several weeks long.
- 1:23But I was like, you know what? I also don't want to leave it to
- 1:28where I'm too spoiled. And as it is, I did get spoiled.
- 1:31We had set the date for this recording, and then I was
- 1:34online, as one does, and I got hella spoiled for the ending of
- 1:39Squid Game season 3. And so I went into it with a
- 1:43little bit of rage at the fandom.
- 1:48And I can say what exactly I got spoiled on in the spoiler
- 1:51section, but suffice it to say, there's a lot of feelings.
- 1:55Tensions are running high, I think, in the community.
- 1:59And by community, I mean world. So we'll just get into it.

- 2:45Martha, Delphia, Maria, Sarah, Julia #2, Pam, Angie, and
- 2:48Nadira. Thank you so much for supporting
- 2:51the show And without further ado, we're going to keep the non
- 2:55spoiler section I think a little shorter.
- 2:57I will read the Asian wiki synopsis and we will go over the
- 3:00cast. But again, it is exactly the
- 3:03same as Season 2, and we went into this in great detail on the
- 3:07Season 2 review, so I don't think we need to belabor the
- 3:10point too much. So this will be a little bit
- 3:12more condensed than usual. The Asian wiki synopsis for
- 3:15Season 3 of Squid Game reads. Sungiyan is returned to the
- 3:20players dormitory by the Pink Guards, but he is baffled by the
- 3:24actions of the Front Man. He is also haunted by the loss
- 3:27of his closest ally, Pakjung Bay, and is even more determined
- 3:31to end the Squid Game once and for all.
- 3:33Meanwhile, the Front Man prepares for the 4th game, which
- 3:35is possibly the bloodiest game yet.
- 3:38VIPs are soon to arrive on the island where the games are held.
- 3:41On the periphery of the Squid Game, Detective Huang Juno and
- 3:45his partners race against the clock to locate the mysterious
- 3:47island where the games are held. Within the ranks of masked
- 3:51officers working the games, Kang Nu UL risks her life to save
- 3:55player PAC Yong Sook. OK, so Season 3 aired several
- 3:59weeks ago. From the time of recording on
- 4:02June 27th, 2025. It is 6 episodes long.
- 4:06Just as a refresher, Season 2 aired December 26th, 2024 Merry
- 4:11Christmas and was 7 episodes long.
- 4:14Season 1 aired all the way back in September of 2021 and it was
- 4:199 episodes long. So we are getting less episodes
- 4:22as the seasons emerge. And season 3 was basically an
- 4:27just an extension of season 2. It wasn't a whole new story.
- 4:30We're just picking up where we left off.
- 4:32It is season 2.5. It really should have just been
- 4:37Season 2. Yeah.
- 4:38Like, I don't. I was like, OK, well.
- 4:41We're rolling our eyes over here to I haven't.
- 4:45This is anyway director and writer back Huang Dongyuk to do
- 4:50Season 3, obviously. And then we've got a bunch of
- 4:53returning stars. We have E Zheng Zei, he's back
- 4:55as player 456. He is joined by Wea June, who
- 5:00plays the undercover cop Juneau. We've got Eben back as the front
- 5:06man. We have all of the players who
- 5:09are still alive since the final episodes of Season 2 returning
- 5:14for Season 3. So I think at this point, I'll
- 5:17just go ahead and ask you, Miguel, what did you think of
- 5:20Season 3 of Squid Game, the conclusion of this whole giant
- 5:24saga that we've been on? Some of the more inventive games
- 5:33that they've had, like it was really interesting to see the
- 5:35scale of it, but as a whole, maybe a little underwhelmed.
- 5:43Ultimately, I think I think that there was a few decisions they
- 5:48made that they could have just not made.
- 5:53But I think I I'm trying to decide whether or not that was
- 5:57because they split a season in 2 when they really didn't have to
- 6:00and that I just lost momentum. But I think it entertaining, but
- 6:07I think it kind of fell flat, honestly.
- 6:09OK, how about you? So I it's difficult because I
- 6:14feel a lot more positively about it because I'm looking at it
- 6:19technically, intellectually, and from a goal perspective.
- 6:25I see that it hit all of the goals and I see that it set out
- 6:29to do what it wanted to do, and it had A to me, I understood the
- 6:35ending completely. Yeah.
- 6:37Totally understood the ending. I was not mad at the ending.
- 6:40I was not upset with any character that lost their life
- 6:45in the course of the show, but there is something about it,
- 6:51about watching it and the experience of watching it that I
- 6:54was like, can we just freaking like get through this?
- 6:56Like there was? I was exasperated by this point
- 7:02and I think it did have a lot to do with we're back for season 3
- 7:06and why the hell is there a season 30?
- 7:08Just give it a get. Put it all in one season.
- 7:13It makes no sense. It made absolutely no sense.
- 7:15It it was like picking up mid, mid sentence.
- 7:17Yeah, I did. They do you know why they did
- 7:21that? Like were they not finished
- 7:24filming it? Were they not?
- 7:25Is there some kind of logistical reason that they did this?
- 7:29This is Netflix to me. This is a total Netflix playbook
- 7:35move. Yeah, Stranger Things is going
- 7:38on 10 years. Stranger Things.
- 7:39I mean, oh God, if you want to talk Stranger Things, like
- 7:42that's another one where I'm like, just let it die.
- 7:44Just let it die at this point because it's totally dead in my
- 7:47imagination. It's totally dead in the
- 7:48consciousness. Nobody cares anymore.
- 7:51And I just don't. Even if I love any of the other
- 7:56seasons, bringing, trotting out these characters, trotting out
- 8:00these older actors now who are literal children in season 1
- 8:06annoys me, Annoys me. I see the mechanism working, you
- 8:10know what I'm saying? It's like I see the man behind
- 8:13the curtain already. Just shut up.
- 8:15Just stop the. Curtain is sheer like it's and
- 8:17it makes the 80s they brought back the 80s again right by now
- 8:23the 80s have gone and come back and gone again like even in like
- 8:27like trend people are over the 80s.
- 8:30People are over the sci-fi. They're over it.
- 8:32So, so Squid Game pulling this really pissed me off.
- 8:37And it really pissed me off because.
- 8:39Squid Game has all of these lofty ideals and it is heavy on
- 8:47the social commentary. It is heavy on the critique of
- 8:51late stage capitalism, which the director, Huang Dongyu has
- 8:55literally come out and said, yeah, it's a commentary on this,
- 8:58but the Netflix is literally doing this to it.
- 9:04Yeah, dilutes the message, Dilutes the message completely.
- 9:08We stated this in Season 2 in our Season 2 review.
- 9:10We were talking about this how Huang Dongyuk literally made
- 9:13pennies on the dollar for Season 1.
- 9:15Disgusting. In the deal that he made with
- 9:17Netflix, as good as Got conned out of any revenue that Netflix
- 9:24made off of season 1, which was a runaway success.
- 9:27And so he basically had to come back and make another season to
- 9:33just make money on his creative work.
- 9:37So. Which makes sense because you
- 9:39can kind of see it reflected in the show.
- 9:43While he's like, OK, let's go. Like, let's just I want to be
- 9:47done with this. Can I be done with this?
- 9:48Like let's. Just that was the feeling and I
- 9:51don't, I wish that I, we were in a, a place and I was in a place
- 9:58where I could literally shut off my phone for five years and not
- 10:03watch season 3 and not get spoiled and nobody talks about
- 10:06it. And then I can come at it from a
- 10:11better place where I can appreciate it.
- 10:14And not that I don't appreciate it because what I'll say is very
- 10:17positive about it, but like, I was freaking tired.
- 10:21Like I'm sorry, I was tired. I hadn't make fucking had it.
- 10:25Yeah, and you're bracing for impact instead of like waiting
- 10:28for it. You know what I mean?
- 10:30Instead of waiting it unfold, being spoiled for it will
- 10:32completely. And then I got spoiled, which I
- 10:35was raging about for like at least 24 hours.
- 10:38Yeah, and that'll that'll it was like that girl during Euphoria.
- 10:42There was a girl on TikTok who went viral because she was in
- 10:44her car at her lunch break screaming into her phone.
- 10:48Can y'all just let me fucking get home?
- 10:51Let me get home, let me get home to watch it because spoilers
- 10:54were everywhere. Like people will binge it within
- 10:57an hour of it coming out. They'll break the space-time
- 10:59continuum, watch the whole thing in an hour, and by the end of
- 11:03the hour, oh, did you know that this happened and that no, I
- 11:06didn't, I'm at work. Like, no I didn't.
- 11:09I was freaking out shopping for groceries.
- 11:11No I didn't. I had to put air in my tires.
- 11:13No I didn't. I was just reading a book like
- 11:15you name. It I live in a different time
- 11:17zone, I it hasn't even come out here yet.
- 11:18Like there's so many. It's literally like give me a
- 11:22second. Right.
- 11:23Give me a freaking 2nd. And that's a pervasive thing in
- 11:27K drama land and obviously in other spaces as well.
- 11:32And that literally put it oh I got so you have no idea how I
- 11:37was raging. I can I.
- 11:39Almost threw my phone across the room.
- 11:41I can because it's it's unavoidable.
- 11:43It was within the day. I almost got spoiled.
- 11:45I I got this close to coming spoiled.
- 11:48A video came up on my TikTok and as soon as I saw like just a
- 11:52uniform I was like boom gone and the next.
- 11:56Luckily the next squid game thing that came up was very
- 11:58neutral so I just started disliking every squid game.
- 12:01Video so. I could just like pull it from
- 12:03my feed. Yeah, I was barely, I was not
- 12:06engaging with any Squid Game content, so I was barely getting
- 12:09anything on my for you. Then I got this once.
- 12:11This is this video that got spoiled on.
- 12:13I won't say what the spoiler is, but I will say what the video
- 12:15was. So this girl was at some promo
- 12:18event with the cast of Squid Game at a panel, like on stage
- 12:23doing a panel. And she had whether this was
- 12:26true or not, the video made it seem like she was having a
- 12:29moment with Itung TE, the star of Squid Game.
- 12:33Like he was like looking at her and like it was really funny and
- 12:36cute. And I was like Oh my God this is
- 12:38so cute. And I run to the comments
- 12:39because I love looking at comments.
- 12:42And there was a literal spoiler right there in the first
- 12:45comment. I hate it I and it's so embedded
- 12:49in the culture now. I was like every TikTok.
- 12:51Video didn't have nothing to do, wasn't a review, wasn't from an
- 12:55official account from Netflix, from School Dame.
- 12:58It wasn't any official promo. It wasn't anything like that.
- 13:03It was just a cute little video. That'll do it.
- 13:09That was it. That'll do it because people
- 13:11take, you've seen this in the comments, you got to go through
- 13:14the top 4 just to get to an actual original comment because
- 13:18everybody uses the whole copy posit thing like wow, 4 seconds
- 13:21ago is crazy. So once you go through like 3000
- 13:24of those regurgitated comments, but the spoilers have been the
- 13:28comments for everything about Squid Game, the top 2 comments
- 13:32are always a spoiler. So it's so.
- 13:34It is so beyond frustrating. And did.
- 13:37Wait, did you see the spoiler before you saw anything?
- 13:41Man? Dude, it's not a good time.
- 13:44It's not a good time. So anyway, now we're here and
- 13:48we're going to talk about it. We're going to talk about
- 13:50everything that happened. So you you liked it?
- 13:54I liked it. I did like I have.
- 13:55I have way more good things to say about it than bad like way.
- 13:58More right like same for me. Yeah, there's a couple things I
- 14:02didn't like, but in general, like it's not even that it fell
- 14:06flat, it was just. It's almost like going to the
- 14:09theater and watching a good movie, but the theater
- 14:11experience was shitty. That's.
- 14:14This is what it felt like to watch Squiddy and Curry is that
- 14:16you were like, man, people were talking the whole movie.
- 14:19They were on their phones the whole movie.
- 14:22And it took five years for me to see this thing and finally it's
- 14:26here. And the movie was good but like
- 14:27damn. By two days after it came out.
- 14:30It's like the discourse around Squid Game.
- 14:33I'm like, what discourse? What disc?
- 14:35It's been 2 days. This is problematic.
- 14:39I'm like, is it? It's been 2 days but I have more
- 14:46good things to say about them. Bad.
- 14:47But you actually captured the feeling very perfectly.
- 14:49That's exactly how I feel. I feel like I saw a movie I
- 14:52really wanted to see and it was just marred by things
- 14:55immediately outside of my control and I hate it so but but
- 14:59it is good. I do.
- 15:00I did like it. Let me be clear, I did like it,
- 15:04but there are things that we're not.
- 15:05They just don't work for me. Someone I posted a video about
- 15:10the Emmy nominations which came out this week.
- 15:13Squid Game got 0 Emmy nominations.
- 15:17Now mind you, season 3 was not eligible for this cycle of prime
- 15:22time Emmys. So Squid Game season 3, what
- 15:25we're reviewing right now, would have never gotten any Emmy
- 15:29nominations. Wow, that's a tongue twister.
- 15:31But Season 2 was totally within the awards campaign season.
- 15:39Like it was eligible. It was eligible and it got 0.
- 15:43That's crazy. Mind you, Squid Game season 1
- 15:46got 14 Emmy nominations and won six of them.
- 15:51So I was shocked. I made a video about the snub
- 15:57because it is clearly a snub. Yeah.
- 16:01Completely, and someone said season 1 was definitely the
- 16:04strongest of the series. It featured well developed
- 16:08character arcs and the deaths felt meaningful and earned
- 16:12within the narrative. I can agree with that.
- 16:15You can agree with that. Yeah, yes, I can agree with the
- 16:18meaningful death part. I can agree with it felt super
- 16:23self-contained. Yes, if they didn't have.
- 16:25I mean, is it a spoiler to mention any spoilers about
- 16:28season 1 at this point? No, I think Season 1 spoilers
- 16:31are on the table if you're listening to a Season 3 Squid
- 16:34Game review. That's like on you.
- 16:37Bro that's on you bro. But we're for season 3 spoilers.
- 16:41We're keeping it clean in this non spoiler section.
- 16:44I could agree with that because I wouldn't have even expected a
- 16:48Season 2 if they didn't pull that Ronald McDonald wig for
- 16:51Guillen. Like at the very, very end, we
- 16:54got a phone call. It's like if they didn't hadn't
- 16:56just shoehorn that in, I wouldn't have even asked for a
- 16:59season 2. I would have been like, oh, OK,
- 17:01so the entire show kind of operated from that.
- 17:04Very scrappy doesn't feel like the right word.
- 17:07But let's use it because it's such a big budget for a show.
- 17:10That's so, you know, he really put everything into writing that
- 17:14show and you can you can feel it.
- 17:17And the second season feels like, OK, well, we can develop
- 17:20some games and we can kind of do this.
- 17:22Like it was way more focused. So everybody brought their all
- 17:26the next seasons were good, but they weren't as strong as I
- 17:31wouldn't say they were as strong, but to get snubbed
- 17:33completely is crazy. To get snubbed from the Emmys.
- 17:36That's wild. There was plenty of good acting
- 17:38chops like being thrown around there like.
- 17:41Acting not even none of the technicals.
- 17:43It got nothing. Oh, I forgot about the
- 17:45technical. Yeah, that's.
- 17:47That's nothing for production design.
- 17:49Like nothing at all. This is one of the most
- 17:51beautifully produced shows I've ever seen.
- 17:53Like it's so polished. I don't get what they're
- 17:57thinking. I don't know what that's about.
- 17:59The Emmys really swerved this year, but as far as this
- 18:05commenter and talking about Season 1 versus 2 and three, I
- 18:10think I like Season 1 slightly more than two and three because
- 18:16I'm considering two and three a single season, if that makes any
- 18:20sense. Yeah, I I am too.
- 18:22It is kind of, it is so ridiculous to split this season,
- 18:26but OK. Anyway, I went back and
- 18:30rewatched the final episode of season 1 just today and I was
- 18:35like, this is really strong. This is so and the emotions were
- 18:39there and I was like, Oh my God, this is just a different.
- 18:45I don't know what it was about. Season one.
- 18:47It was lightning in a bottle. I remember it being lightning in
- 18:50a bottle and it's still fresh. It's so good.
- 18:55It's so good, so there is something to it.
- 18:58There is some magic sauce in Season 1 compared to two and
- 19:02three, even though two and three are very very strong.
- 19:05It just happens though like that happens with TV in general,
- 19:08especially when you take an idea when you have an idea that's
- 19:11more likely to be self-contained like the bear.
- 19:14Have you watched The Bear of? Course I've watched the.
- 19:17Bear so the first season amazing, really on point,
- 19:21whatever. And then everything else is
- 19:22like, OK, well, yeah. Or like Ted Lasso, like it.
- 19:25It's just so obvious that it wasn't supposed to go that long
- 19:28or that far and they didn't plan ahead.
- 19:31And I think that's what you lose.
- 19:33It's like, oh, Squid Game now featuring this and everybody's
- 19:37kind of on, you know what I mean?
- 19:39Yes, there's something about it that's like, OK, don't muck this
- 19:42up. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:44Like, everybody's kind of like, oh.
- 19:46Because they had nothing. I'm going to draw my inspiration
- 19:48from this. Player, the actors, the crew,
- 19:52the director. There was nothing to lose at
- 19:54that point. No, like he already reached the
- 19:57moon as far as. Afterward, when it lit up
- 20:00everything and everybody watched Squid Game, then it was like,
- 20:03oh, OK, I guess. Then Netflix started funneling
- 20:05money behind it and that's when you got the merch.
- 20:07That's when you got the spin off Squid Game Game show craziness.
- 20:14The Dalgona branded coffee, I see that little girl from Red
- 20:18Light, Green light literally everywhere at the Asian market.
- 20:21As cell charms, as this, as that.
- 20:23Yeah, yeah. It wasn't meant for all that.
- 20:25So I think nobody knew, kind of. They all acted very well,
- 20:29obviously, but the magic's gone 'cause they're like, oh shit,
- 20:33I'm on the global stage. Like they were doing a show
- 20:35thinking they were doing a Korean drama, a Korean like
- 20:38action show that might end up in the USI could.
- 20:41Always I think there's something special about like, you know how
- 20:44you, I don't know how to put it, but like you filter yourself if
- 20:47you think someone's watching you.
- 20:48Yes, and you can see that with the actors.
- 20:50And that somehow is in the DNA of two and three.
- 20:55It feels bigger and bolder, but the things that they made bigger
- 20:58and bolder weren't necessarily something we were asking for.
- 21:01You could see it in the cast, too.
- 21:03They kind of had parallels to the first season of the cast,
- 21:08like the shaman was just like the crazy bitch from the first
- 21:11season, right? Or, you know, they swapped out a
- 21:15lesbian for a trans character so that there's a parallel.
- 21:18They switched out an elderly cowardly like gangster type with
- 21:23an elderly cowardly salary man like office worker type.
- 21:28So it's kind of like they, they didn't really go that far with
- 21:32the characters in that different direction.
- 21:34They they all worked with it but there was a copy paste going on.
- 21:37There is a lot of copy paste. There's a lot of parallel
- 21:40characters and archetypes that show up in both season 1 and
- 21:45then season 2/3. Someone on TikTok and I think I
- 21:49re retweeted. I'm about to say retweeted.
- 21:53I reposted the video because I really enjoyed it and I agreed
- 21:58completely. I think it, I think it was a
- 22:01Korean American who was talking about the structure of Squid
- 22:05Game and how it's just a parable.
- 22:09And I was like, perfect, perfect way to put it.
- 22:12And yes, absolutely, they're 100% right.
- 22:14And before I saw the video, I was thinking deeply about The
- 22:18Canterbury Tales because I'm visiting Canterbury next week on
- 22:22vacation. And I am a former English major.
- 22:25So I was like, Oh my God, we're going to fucking Canterbury.
- 22:29Like that's a huge fucking deal anyway, so.
- 22:32Stop on the Shire on your way there.
- 22:34And stop it anyway. We're not going there, but we
- 22:36are going to Canterbury. And it made me think of the
- 22:39Canterbury Tales. I'm learning the prologue to
- 22:41Chaucer and all of those stories that I remember reading and
- 22:47studying in school, Him saying, oh, Squid Game is basically a
- 22:51Korean parable with all of these characters representing
- 22:55different facets of society, and they're not meant to be these
- 22:58deep character studies on these people.
- 23:01They are meant to represent a very fractured and interesting
- 23:05and diverse society. All of these different You have
- 23:09the single unmarried mother who's about to give birth.
- 23:14You have the crypto guy, the crypto scammer.
- 23:17You have the drug addicts, You have the, you know, the gambling
- 23:21addicts. You have all of these people
- 23:24from the what is perceived as the underbelly of Korean
- 23:27society. And there's not supposed to be a
- 23:32ton of character development. Yeah, that makes sense.
- 23:35Kind of like 5 characters in search of an exit.
- 23:37Type. That's what I mean by oh,
- 23:38there's archetypes that match the archetypes in season 1.
- 23:42Yeah, yeah. And well, that's a spoiler, but
- 23:46it's, you know what? I agree with that.
- 23:49It is and it is. It is a parable, and it's a
- 23:51pretty good one too. And it's an.
- 23:52Amazing one. I, I, I love it for that.
- 23:54I love it for the message that it's saying.
- 23:57Cause again, tons of social commentary, a ton of critique.
- 24:02It's, I think the director was like, it's allegorical, it's
- 24:05satire, it's whatever. All of these terms that sort of
- 24:09kind of mean the same thing, but yeah, it's saying something.
- 24:14Yeah. And it's pretty.
- 24:15It's it's heavy and familiar. It's very familiar.
- 24:18To you're gonna recognize people and because it's from the Korean
- 24:23perspective, because it's AK drama, these people are Korean
- 24:28society. Yeah, what was cool and what was
- 24:30global was that everybody saw maybe something that they could
- 24:34relate to. Yeah, people are like all over.
- 24:37That's the big take away honestly, especially with the
- 24:41crypto guy. The crypto guy yeah let's talk
- 24:45about the ending and in non spoiler terms because we got a
- 24:50question on Instagram. Someone was like, I want you to
- 24:53talk about the ending hate because people fucking hated
- 24:57this ending. Yeah, this person said.
- 25:00I liked it but I think the majority of people aren't
- 25:03consuming K dramas who shit on it.
- 25:07Oh. And so that was a different way
- 25:09of putting it, of way of like kind of rationalizing why people
- 25:13might not have appreciated the ending and what it was doing.
- 25:19I can kind of, I can kind of get behind that.
- 25:21I can kind of get behind that. I think that the way that they
- 25:26set up endings in the West is very different.
- 25:30What do you mean by that? Well, I mean, it's a spoiler.
- 25:33So like, it's, I guess I just mean they're more pragmatic in
- 25:39Korean dramas. They're more pragmatic.
- 25:41And it's like, I can't believe this happened.
- 25:43And when you really ask that out loud, you look at it, it's like,
- 25:46well, why did I think that, 'cause I'm used to the writing
- 25:49that we have here against all odds, this, that kind of milieu
- 25:54of like, we'll find a way to make it happen.
- 25:57Yeah, Deus Ex machina happy. Deus Ex machina, Yeah, there
- 26:01ain't no Deus, ain't no machina. I know none of that over there.
- 26:04Like nothing, nothing. They're just like, all right.
- 26:08Well, it, it kind of forces the viewer, especially I would say
- 26:14one that's not in a Korean audience or familiar with Korean
- 26:18dramas. It's like, OK, so you're
- 26:20disappointed. Why?
- 26:22Well, because I thought this would happen.
- 26:23And why would you think that you didn't watch the rest of the
- 26:25show? That's what it forces you to
- 26:27reconcile with. So I can, I can kind of agree
- 26:30with that comment because yeah, no, this isn't an American show,
- 26:35guys. Like it's.
- 26:37Not yeah, I watched a couple Disney movies today and I was
- 26:39like, man, we are so not that I hate them, I love them.
- 26:44But I feel like as a society, we're so conditioned to want
- 26:48the, you know, Avengers end game ending.
- 26:52You know what I'm saying? When really it should have ended
- 26:55like the Thanos snap. It's like he snapped everyone
- 26:59out of existence, guys. Like there's no coming.
- 27:02Right, right. There's a there's a don't worry.
- 27:05The Prince comes and kisses her and she wakes up.
- 27:09Don't worry, We're gonna. We're gonna reverse all of this
- 27:13through crazy, fantastical means.
- 27:16And it's something that, you know, historically we did
- 27:19specifically Disney, right? Because Pinocchio was a
- 27:24serialized comic where it was like a sadistic, A serialized
- 27:29comic about making fun of the misfortunes of this wooden boy
- 27:32who's pathetically thinks he's going to be like a real boy.
- 27:35Maleficent holds the Prince until he's like 1000 years old
- 27:39and then releases him. Like, it was a really mean but
- 27:43realistic form of storytelling. For the longest time.
- 27:47We got used to like, the better ending so fast.
- 27:50Yeah, doesn't always work either.
- 27:52Right. And I think that's the when the
- 27:55Western audience sees, you know, their favorite characters going
- 28:00through trials and tribulations. And then the the trials and
- 28:03tribulations don't end. There's no reversal of fortune
- 28:08that makes people upset. Sometimes you're just job guys
- 28:13like, yeah, like that's it. Like, I personally really liked
- 28:20the ending. I thought it was very powerful
- 28:23and I thought it was a lot more positive than people were
- 28:25thinking it was. I I could see where you're
- 28:30coming. From I found a lot more Nuggets
- 28:33of positivity. Yes, then.
- 28:37I think most people saw maybe on first watch.
- 28:42Oh yeah, yeah. People didn't look at it very
- 28:44analytically, the Discourse or whatever we're calling.
- 28:48I love when you say discourse. Every time he says discourse
- 28:51people, he does air clothes with his.
- 28:53Hands it. It just feels like a buzzer now.
- 28:56It's like, oh, the narrative around Squid Game, like, just
- 28:58stop. We're talking about a show.
- 29:00Relax. But I think it's so reactionary
- 29:03how people have been commenting about the ending, yeah, that I
- 29:06feel like they're missing. They're missing so many little
- 29:09things. That's how I feel.
- 29:10It's like, oh, you missed it. And you read it in the comments
- 29:13too. But these are the same people
- 29:14who are like, oh, fan theory. This was actually the game
- 29:17leader sneaking into the game. It's like, no, that's not a
- 29:19theory, guys. Like that's.
- 29:21Yes. So I think they're missing it
- 29:24and it makes me feel sad because I don't think people really
- 29:26revisit anything anymore. I know.
- 29:28So I think they're going to watch it, think that they hated
- 29:30it, missed all this stuff. But there is.
- 29:32What will come out of it is man, season 3 of Squid Games sucked.
- 29:38And that's the whole thing. And that's the whole thing.
- 29:39That's scores. Like.
- 29:43And then you go, oh, why did you think it sucked?
- 29:45And they're they'll give you the ending.
- 29:48Yeah. Or they'll give you there was no
- 29:51character development. That's not even true.
- 29:54First of all. I think it's not even true.
- 29:57We got character development like 2 of the episodes of this
- 30:00fractured season we got to see they developed.
- 30:04It happened. They gave you some, they gave
- 30:07you a little bit, but again, this story was never, I think
- 30:12built on this character is going to surprise you and do something
- 30:20totally different, contrary. Anybody.
- 30:23This is my feeling on it when it comes to character development.
- 30:27Anybody who voted to proceed after the second game, you
- 30:30should know what it's hitting for by now.
- 30:33You know what I mean? Like as a viewer, it's like, Oh,
- 30:35well, this guy went through these two or three challenges
- 30:38and they still voted to keep going.
- 30:40There is no development. There's no nothing.
- 30:43We're just going to see the worst parts of what they've
- 30:45already revealed to us. So that's what I find weird
- 30:49about the whole character development thing.
- 30:51It's like, oh, how could, for example, how could he have done
- 30:54that? It's like, how could he have not
- 30:56or she have not? Like they voted through every
- 30:59single round. They're watching people die all
- 31:03around them, main cast and extras, and they still proceed
- 31:07to continue the game. Like what do you want to know
- 31:10about this character? Like what is there to develop
- 31:12like? It's sending a message, I just
- 31:16don't think they like the message.
- 31:20Anyways so this is I think as far as you can go is talking
- 31:23about the ending without ever actually talking about specifics
- 31:28for the ending. This I think we could talk about
- 31:31in the non spoiler section. We had someone ask thoughts on
- 31:35could the VIPs have just sat there in their masks instead of
- 31:40being cringe? That's a question for the ages.
- 31:45I think that they should have put them in AVIP room off
- 31:50camera, never to be seen. We didn't need them.
- 31:54It was horrible. It was horrible.
- 31:58No word of a lie. I would out of cringe start
- 32:01clicking. I have an Apple TV so it does
- 32:02the little like 5 and 10 click by pressure.
- 32:05I would just go like and just immediately go to the and I
- 32:09would be like no I can't. So I would rewind.
- 32:12What was with the ADR voices? Dude they were so the VI PS We
- 32:17finally see the VI PS I guess. Minor spoiler.
- 32:20We see them in season 3 because after a certain part, once they
- 32:26surpass a certain game and there's less players, the VIP
- 32:30show up to the island just like in season 1.
- 32:33So the VIP show up in season 3. Listen this has got to be some
- 32:39of the most cringe worthy goofiest dubbing blatant dubbing
- 32:46that I have seen in K drama period.
- 32:50And granted, we've been watching K Drive for a long time.
- 32:54English speaking characters, always without bail suck.
- 33:01They're just the worst actors. Like just got somebody off the
- 33:04street who could barely put two sentences together and they're
- 33:09like, hey, you can you read? Read this.
- 33:14And that is how it feels. And they're not even Korean.
- 33:19So like, are they finding Dutch people, like on the street?
- 33:21Like what is this accent? What is this?
- 33:23Voice look. Or in the Korean dramas, when
- 33:26they get back from Princeton or Stanford or Harvard and they
- 33:30speak in the most broken English possible, like it's.
- 33:33Just. But they've been there for 10
- 33:34years, right? Yeah.
- 33:36It's just astonishing how bad the VIPs were.
- 33:42It distractingly bad. Who okayed that?
- 33:44Like, I'm baffled that, like, this is a mega.
- 33:48This is Netflix, right? Like nothing gets past them.
- 33:52How does even the actors, I had read the actors had actually
- 33:56spoken out about that. The VIP actors.
- 33:58Yeah. And they saw it.
- 33:59And they're like, we don't know why we were dubbed over.
- 34:02Like we're all native English speakers.
- 34:04Like I don't. Yeah, now they've taken their
- 34:07performance out of it. I was because these people are
- 34:10swearing. Up and down, I can actually act.
- 34:12I don't speak like that. Well, it's a good thing they're
- 34:15wearing masks. In like a pantomime of a person
- 34:18who speaks English. I heard a rumor that this is how
- 34:23people English speak, so I'm basing it off that this is what
- 34:27they say English sounds like. It's just, I don't know why they
- 34:30tampered with it. It totally diminished the show.
- 34:33They took too much screen time. They took up way too much screen
- 34:36time. I hated the VIPs.
- 34:39I mean, The thing is, they're supposed to be, on some level,
- 34:42really cartoonish. Yeah, They're supposed to
- 34:45represent the most horrible, elitist, deplorable people.
- 34:51Yeah, I mean. So I don't know if he, the
- 34:55director, is making fun of these people by making them sound so
- 35:00goofy. Goofy.
- 35:03Yeah, I mean, I guess the English the script.
- 35:07The script also was horrendous for them the.
- 35:09Script was. It was a step up just.
- 35:11Flimsiest thing I've ever seen. But you know what's crazy?
- 35:14I can actually accept because I remember the first season.
- 35:18I hate it. But you do the eye roll thing
- 35:20where someone in a Korean drama was like, hey, you there because
- 35:23you're not expecting English at all.
- 35:25So I kind of rolled my eyes there or whatever.
- 35:26Then it becomes a global phenomenon and it becomes this
- 35:29massive explosion. Surely they can't make this
- 35:32mistake twice. Not only did they fuck it up
- 35:35again, but they had to dub over it so I'm just and then I could
- 35:42forgive all of it. I honestly could fine, but it
- 35:46was way too much time on screen. We should have gotten a glimpse
- 35:49of them like twice and move on. We get it, rich people are
- 35:52watching. It's, I mean, they're the choir,
- 35:55right? In a Greek tragedy, they're the
- 35:57choir. We don't need a choir.
- 36:00They're the ones talking about what's happening, the action
- 36:05that's happening. But I feel like they don't trust
- 36:07us to, like, derive that nuance from it, you know what I mean?
- 36:13Like. I think the director really
- 36:15thought I want the perspective of the worst of the worst to be
- 36:23commentating like sport commentators throughout the
- 36:27Squid Games. And it would have been grueling
- 36:29and had the effect he wanted if good.
- 36:33If I wasn't laughing ass off every time they were on.
- 36:35Me or just like cringing into a new life form just like like an
- 36:40Autobot just crunching into myself it's.
- 36:44Just. We didn't need it.
- 36:48I didn't like it. I didn't like it at all.
- 36:49So that's the answer to that question.
- 36:51All right. What would you give Squid Game
- 36:54season 3 out of five told you bottles. 3 1/2, maybe a four,
- 37:01maybe my initial thing here. I think my opinion will change
- 37:04as we talk about it more. I haven't talked about it to
- 37:06anyone, but for now I'm going to give it a 3.53. .5 OK yeah I'll
- 37:10give it a 4 but I'm trying to offset the feeling of a bad
- 37:16experience. You know, that's a hard one,
- 37:19dude. That's a hard one.
- 37:21That's really hard to do. I would love to rewatch this
- 37:25down the line when the discourse has died down and nobody.
- 37:31Can come back and change the narrative.
- 37:35I think it was incredibly unfair for, for, for me, for, for a lot
- 37:41of people because yes, I'm a fan of Squid Game.
- 37:42Yes, I appreciate it. Yes, I've been doing views on
- 37:45Squid Game, but the fact that this feeding frenzy has come
- 37:52from my throat and diminish my view is, to me, unacceptable.
- 37:57That's fair. O I'm giving it a four out of
- 38:00five, kind of against my better judgment because I want to give
- 38:04it a 3 1/2, but I'll give it a four because I do feel like the
- 38:07craft is there. The story is strong.
- 38:13I did have reactions throughout the episodes as they went on.
- 38:17It was definitely a heavy show. This is not for the faint of
- 38:20heart. This is not for those who are
- 38:22squeamish and don't like blood and don't like violence.
- 38:25Of obviously all those things still apply for Season 3 and I
- 38:30think that the message was really powerful, if only diluted
- 38:36by the capitalist machine that is Netflix.
- 38:40Yeah, Yeah. That's, you know what, that's
- 38:43fair and that's a really generous I.
- 38:47But are you doing that for just Season 3 or are you doing that
- 38:50knowing that two and three are basically one season?
- 38:52No No. For Season 3.
- 38:53For Season 3. OK.
- 38:55Yeah. All right.
- 38:56All right, all right. Fair.
- 38:58And I feel like I have a lot of notes, but not that many notes.
- 39:00But we'll get into it right after this.
- 39:04Excuse me, I can't, you know, I am noting.
- 39:10Oh, sorry. All right, we're on the other
- 39:20side of spoilers and we are going to talk at length about
- 39:23what the hell happened in Squid Game Season 3.
- 39:26We're going to talk spoilers. We're going to go into, I think,
- 39:30a little bit of detail. I think that's what the people
- 39:35want. So let's talk about I.
- 39:39Should we go in order? Should we just go in episode
- 39:41order? Yeah, sure.
- 39:43Episode 1 Keys and Knives we see that 8 managers and 27 soldiers
- 39:49died in the melee of the end of season 2, which was the
- 39:53insurrection, the rebellion, the uprising, you know?
- 39:58The fallout of it all. The fallout it was 8 managers,
- 40:0227 soldiers on the Squid Game side, and 35 players died.
- 40:06For those doing math at home, that is exactly the same number.
- 40:10So 35 Squid Game employees and 35 players died and this game,
- 40:16this Quid Games, they're obsessed with fairness.
- 40:20Yeah. I think from jump 001 was like,
- 40:23oh, if he wants to rebel and play this hero game, I'll let
- 40:28him, but it has to be fair. That's pretty cool, honestly.
- 40:32I was thinking that was interesting and something of
- 40:36note. They string up the rebel players
- 40:41as they're heading to the next game.
- 40:44They see them hanging up there and I thought that was really
- 40:47barbaric. They didn't clean up the walls
- 40:49either. They didn't clean up the walls
- 40:51or nothing. Terrifying.
- 40:53Blood splatter and the bullet holes everywhere.
- 40:56Aftermath of the massacre. There was something about the
- 41:00rebel players being strung up that I was like, this is very
- 41:03like, just medieval. Yeah, very.
- 41:06Look at what your insulins got you.
- 41:08Let this be a warning to you. Heads on the spikes type it was,
- 41:13and even then, I'm really cautious about saying this, but
- 41:16I think you'll know what I mean. Even then, that was probably as
- 41:19dignified as they could have gotten with it because they were
- 41:23hanging by their wrists from a centerpiece.
- 41:27I thought they were going to do worse than that.
- 41:28Like I thought they were going to make a real big shot.
- 41:30I thought they were going to leave the bodies in place, not
- 41:33clean anything up. And it's like, walk around.
- 41:36You thought they were going to leave the bodies in place?
- 41:38See, I thought they were going to do what they usually do,
- 41:40which was just drag the bodies off, put them in a casket, and
- 41:43then cremate them. Yeah.
- 41:46But no, they went the extra mile and they hung them up as a
- 41:49message. Yeah, to scare them.
- 41:51It was gross and it was really gross.
- 41:56We get the 4th game, it's hide and seek.
- 41:58I heard someone online saying this is not a fair hide and seek
- 42:03because the keys that everybody got who were hiding did not open
- 42:07all the doors because the doors had different locks that were in
- 42:13the different shapes of the triangle, the square and the
- 42:15circle. And to open the final door to
- 42:18escape the exit, you needed all three keys.
- 42:22And they were like, that's not fair.
- 42:24And then some doors led to nowhere.
- 42:28They were just death traps. Yeah, like you would fall to
- 42:31your death. Yeah.
- 42:32Oh my God. I thought it this is like the
- 42:35whole thing is that this is a bastardized democratic voting
- 42:38process. This is a bastardized idea of
- 42:41fairness as well. Because what other game then
- 42:46would be fair, right? It's yeah, I don't really.
- 42:50I mean, I can see where they're coming from.
- 42:51I. Can see why they were upset but
- 42:53also like they're they're under 24/7 surveillance.
- 42:56There's an entire staff that's dedicated to watching their
- 43:00every move, to listening to them, to facilitating the games.
- 43:05Yeah, the fact that the keys were not opening every door, I
- 43:09was like, this is like, beyond the pale.
- 43:11Like I of course of course they don't open every single door.
- 43:15Yeah, and isn't that like real high?
- 43:17That's like hide and seek in real life too, though, right?
- 43:20Because it's like, oh, I thought I found a place to hide, but
- 43:22just kidding, I didn't, you know?
- 43:23And and it's also a culling game though, isn't it?
- 43:26Right. Because it's meant to get the
- 43:28most players out of play. We're near the end.
- 43:32You thought you found the exit 1800.
- 43:34You thought you got. You need two other people.
- 43:36They need distinct keys like Oh, I didn't expect Morgan, it was
- 43:401800 you. Thought but in this.
- 43:42Episode this is this is a big culling game.
- 43:44It was a it's like, OK, we're nearing the end now let's start
- 43:47wiping people out so it makes sense why they did it that way.
- 43:50And yeah, I mean, in hide and go seek, you can't really hide
- 43:55behind a locked door. You can't hide like, you're not
- 43:57supposed to do that. You have to hide in a place
- 44:00where you could reasonably be found.
- 44:01Because I saw criticism about that.
- 44:03It's like, oh, that's BS. Like you can't even lock the
- 44:05door once you've opened it. It's like, well, yeah, like if
- 44:09you were. Saying hide and seek.
- 44:12Yeah, like once you open this door, you cannot go back.
- 44:16You can't lock it again. It's open forever.
- 44:19And it's the same with all of these characters.
- 44:22They're not. Even if they win, they cannot
- 44:24return to who they were before. There's no winning the games.
- 44:29I've had trauma from less. I don't know how they would
- 44:31react to society and just like. So, you know, the fact that they
- 44:38couldn't lock the door behind them and there was no sense of
- 44:41safety, Yeah. I mean, it's a it's a game.
- 44:45It's it's for entertainment purposes, to entertain the
- 44:49elite, the the VIPs. Exactly.
- 44:51That's the whole point. You're there for someone else's
- 44:54enjoy. I mean, all things considered,
- 44:55the games are very, very fair in a in a very psychotic way,
- 45:02right? But they have a logic that all
- 45:04the games have a logic that if you're paying attention close
- 45:06enough, like it's like, OK, fine.
- 45:08Like, but considering it's a game of life and death, it's
- 45:12very sophisticated. At least it's not like, I don't
- 45:14know, fight to the death. Here you go in an open like
- 45:18airspace and they're just giving everybody knives, you know what
- 45:21I mean? Like, there's rules, there's
- 45:22structure, there's. And it always devolves into
- 45:26that. Every time.
- 45:27Yeah, it every time. So we get red team, they're the
- 45:30taggers. They have to hide.
- 45:32Nope, never mind. Have that backward.
- 45:34The red team of the Tigers, they have to kill the blue team and
- 45:37they're given little toy, what look like toy daggers.
- 45:40That was so funny and it's like sailor moans.
- 45:43Like the scene where Gian is walking like angrily like a man
- 45:50on a mission and they focus on his hand with this little knife.
- 45:54Cracked me up. Yeah, it looks like a little toy
- 45:56knife. I will say Gian at this point is
- 46:00a different man, right? You see how the games have taken
- 46:05a toll on him, how the rebellion or the the losses that he took
- 46:10has played on his mind, on his spirit.
- 46:13He feels guilty. Yeah, he feels.
- 46:16Incredibly guilty. He's putting that all on his
- 46:18shoulders because he's like, I LED these people to their death.
- 46:21And for what? And for?
- 46:22What? He took the all the way
- 46:24downtown, like the whole like he just got on and never got off.
- 46:28I felt so bad for him. I'm like damn, Nope, I got Una.
- 46:31Like everything that he does is so.
- 46:34Yeah, but he was it. The only I can remember, a
- 46:38couple of players basically come together and they're like, hey,
- 46:41Kangan Dole, who's player 388 Bao is the name of that
- 46:45character. Yeah, he fucked up.
- 46:48He came back for the magazines and was in a puddle in the fetal
- 46:53position on the floor. Never made it back, just sat
- 46:56there and didn't do anything and was cowardly.
- 46:59That is all that Kia needs to place blame on somebody else.
- 47:03He needs a scapegoat. Yeah, you know, for his own
- 47:06psyche. Because even if he would have
- 47:09gotten the magazines out there, like let's be so for real,
- 47:12they're not going to win. Like they were like they might
- 47:15have gotten a couple of more of the pink soldiers down.
- 47:18This was. Controlled chaos.
- 47:20Yeah, if he wanted to, the leader could have just opened
- 47:23fire on everybody and just ended it.
- 47:25Yeah. Oh, well, he What about that
- 47:29reveal though? I mean, not really a reveal
- 47:31because we suspected it. Yeah.
- 47:33So next episode is * night and we get this reveal that 388,
- 47:38which is Kongano's character, did not serve in the Marines.
- 47:42Now, I think a lot of people were upset because the
- 47:45translation was off. It made it seem that he had
- 47:47never served ever in the military when really he had
- 47:51served in sort of like a service personnel capacity.
- 47:55He was not in the Marines, but he did technically serve his
- 48:01time in the military. Like when someone says they're a
- 48:04Marine but they work a desk job in Kuwait or something or like.
- 48:08No, it's not even that it was. It was like another like AI
- 48:12don't know how to explain it but he did not.
- 48:15Like he's never seen combat basically.
- 48:18OK, so he served in the military under social services personnel,
- 48:23implying that he wasn't considered mentally fit to go to
- 48:26the regular military service. So he gets a Marine tattoo even
- 48:32though he never was a Marine. That's so sad.
- 48:34He's a wannabe, a pretender. A liar.
- 48:39A liar because he did go to the. He did serve.
- 48:43In the in the military technically, but social services
- 48:48personnel is not the same as active duty Marine.
- 48:52I still can't help but feel somewhat bad for him, but Oh
- 48:56well. He just wanted to play with the
- 48:58guys. He just wanted to be accepted.
- 49:00The thing is, I do and I don't because the tattoo is like a a
- 49:03step too far. Definitely.
- 49:05The tattoo. That's like hypey territory.
- 49:07Yeah, and him being in that situation, I under, I understand
- 49:10him lying through his teeth. Yeah, but also, what the hell?
- 49:15He was also lying before he ever entered the Squid Game because
- 49:18of the tattoo. Yeah, yeah.
- 49:21So stolen valor. I wonder if that's a thing over
- 49:23there. Well, people are saying it's not
- 49:24technically stolen valor because he did serve his, you know, 2
- 49:29year military term, but it was under this this other like
- 49:35social services. Yeah, which a lot of people do.
- 49:38Yeah, that's fine. It's but it's not he's in.
- 49:43There's nothing wrong with the job, but it's the very
- 49:46intentional. Like you hear Marine, you think,
- 49:49damn, he was on the front lines doing the GI Joe thing and like,
- 49:53girl, you weren't GI Joe, You weren't GI anything like you
- 49:55were like you weren't doing that.
- 49:57No, to represent. Yeah, OK, it's slimy.
- 50:00It's slimy but it sucks because the light caught up with them
- 50:03and look at what it turned into. Right.
- 50:06I was really frustrated with this character at the end of
- 50:08season 2 because he is very cowardly and he cowers in a
- 50:15corner and he's having this trauma response.
- 50:18I understand that, but trauma to nothing.
- 50:20He's just scared. Yeah, right.
- 50:23It's not. AI wouldn't say it's a trauma
- 50:25response at that point. I think it's.
- 50:27He's just fucking scared out of out of his mind.
- 50:29Yeah, because you would think, OK, my whole thing with him was
- 50:32like, all right, this sucks, but you know, we lost another one to
- 50:37PTSD. Like, OK, no problem.
- 50:39Like, it's lousy timing, but you can't control that.
- 50:42He saw combat like he probably. And now.
- 50:45So it's like, oh, you were just like, scared.
- 50:48Right. And The thing is, I I feel for
- 50:50him because yes, it's scary. The situation is awful.
- 50:54Of course everyone is afraid. But if this was a military
- 50:59operation, he's a deserter. And also how does that?
- 51:01But whatever, that's fine. Like.
- 51:05The thing is, in episode 2456, Kyun is out for blood.
- 51:10He's going directly to 388. He is letting people go on the
- 51:15blue team because he wants to kill specifically Kanganol's
- 51:21388. Yeah, 'cause they're screaming
- 51:23for their lives and he just walks past.
- 51:25I actually think I wrote a note about that.
- 51:27Let me see. 0456 is crazed. Look, suits him well.
- 51:31It's very scary 'cause it's true.
- 51:34He's a man on a mission, He's in a, he's in a trance.
- 51:38He's like going for it. He doesn't care who's getting
- 51:41stabbed, who's in his way. He's just weaving through and
- 51:44just looking for him. That was wild.
- 51:47What I found interesting with that, we'll just follow through
- 51:49with them until the end. Before we talk about other
- 51:51things in this episode, 'cause this episode gets wild, but the
- 51:55whole reason why the knives were brought out in the first place
- 51:59is that people were like, you expect us to kill people on the
- 52:03blue team with our bare hands? That's crazy, that's barbaric.
- 52:08No, we're not. We can't do that.
- 52:09There's no way we're going to be able to do that.
- 52:11So then they're like, Oh well, here's a gift for the red team,
- 52:16the taggers, and then hand out the knives.
- 52:19I think the bare hands thing would have been more
- 52:20interesting. And 456 doesn't use the knife to
- 52:24kill 388. He uses his bare hands.
- 52:27Yeah, to suffocate him to death. It's like real primal rage, like
- 52:33real, just very Cane and Abel very back to basics, very like,
- 52:38no, I'm going to use my own force to just kill you.
- 52:41And he didn't take any handouts from the soldiers to do it.
- 52:46Like he's like, I don't need their help in killing you.
- 52:48I I got this. It was really intense.
- 52:51It was one of the most intense killings in the whole.
- 52:54Thing and the fact that Kanga Noel's character and I love this
- 52:57acting here, Kanga Noel again, really amazing actor.
- 53:01I really, really respect him. His standoff with him is
- 53:04fantastic. Even before, you know, he gets
- 53:06strangled to death. He's he's challenging 456 and
- 53:10saying, no, it's your fault that all of these people died.
- 53:14It's not on me. Oh my God that this operation
- 53:17failed. The gall of it all.
- 53:20Because it's like yeah, but also like no.
- 53:23I mean, he's a cornered person. It was never, he was never going
- 53:27to say the sanest thing. He was never going to be.
- 53:30You're right, I definitely am totally to blame for this thing
- 53:36going South. The childish Gambit, one of my
- 53:39favorite. It wasn't really a gag, but one
- 53:41of my favorite things about that scene is he's hiding behind the
- 53:45door. He's just hiding behind the
- 53:48door. And just like you do as a little
- 53:50kid, it's like, oh shit, they found where I'm hiding.
- 53:52So you'll try to like do this thing where you'll hide in like
- 53:55a coat in the closet or you'll hide behind a door or whatever.
- 53:59That cracked me up. I don't know.
- 54:00It's such a small detail. It is a small.
- 54:02Detail, but cowering like a child.
- 54:04Like a literal child. It's not a bad plan.
- 54:07I would do the same thing, but when you butt that up against
- 54:11everything else you know about 388, you're like, this guy's a
- 54:14fucking punk, like. And and that's what it tells
- 54:16you, because anybody who's not a punk would do that same thing,
- 54:20Wait till they hear the footsteps, peek over to see, and
- 54:23then just slip out the door and run in the other.
- 54:26But no, he's too scared to even do that.
- 54:29I just I do love how it's mind games before that because 456 is
- 54:33staring his ass down. Yeah, the whole time and he just
- 54:37keeps looking out of the corner of his.
- 54:39And it just, I mean, it riles him up.
- 54:41It gets him so anxious. And I, I just love that lead up
- 54:44to both of them. But 456 after he strangles him,
- 54:47he does come to terms pretty instantaneously with his own
- 54:52guilt. And he admits it is my fault,
- 54:56even though it's really not his fault.
- 54:59He had noble intentions. They came together as a team.
- 55:02He went into the games with these intentions to shut it all
- 55:05down. He wanted to save people, right?
- 55:08Like it wasn't. That was the plan all along.
- 55:11Like that was the execution of the whole reason he came back.
- 55:15So. And if not, like what's the
- 55:17alternative when it comes to blame?
- 55:19Like what's the alternative? They were all just going to die
- 55:21in the game anyway. Everybody was probably.
- 55:24Going to die him raging against this game in all of the the
- 55:30whole he doesn't want to be a cog in this machine and die and
- 55:35have all of these people die too.
- 55:37He's really trying to save people and.
- 55:40People died. You got to break a few eggs.
- 55:41Like it's like they were going to die.
- 55:44I do remember talking about that in the season 2 episode of How
- 55:47it is challenging 001. The front man in disguise is
- 55:52challenging him and saying, oh, so it's OK that, you know, some
- 55:57people die while we're doing this and.
- 56:01Yeah. And he said, yeah, the ends
- 56:04justify the means, basically. They have to when you're up
- 56:07against something like that, Yeah.
- 56:09I mean, what's the alternative? People are going to die.
- 56:12And it was very damning, I think, for the 456 character.
- 56:16And he senses it now when he blames himself and he actually
- 56:20tries to commit suicide with the knife and they don't let him.
- 56:26That was so vile. They don't let him.
- 56:28They shoot the they shoot the knife out of his hand.
- 56:30That was vile. And then they tie him to a bed.
- 56:32He can't even sleep in a bed waiting for the next game.
- 56:35That's wild. I don't it was.
- 56:37I love this episode. It's really good.
- 56:39But this we haven't even covered the other thing, which is we got
- 56:42Team 2, which is the pregnant girl.
- 56:47We got player 222, that's Chuni. We have Kumja, which is player
- 56:53149, she's the Harmony character.
- 56:56And then we have Hyunju, the trans character player 120.
- 57:01Icon. Doing A tag team, they're a trio
- 57:04trying to help each other out in the game.
- 57:06They're all in the blue team. What do you have to say about
- 57:09this? I don't even know where to
- 57:11start. I just don't even know where to
- 57:12start. Her water breaks.
- 57:15Yeah, the baby is born inside 15 minutes.
- 57:19Like it comes fast. Yeah, I don't know.
- 57:22Like it's CGI. Oh.
- 57:25Oh, we. Want to talk about how they
- 57:27Renes made the baby? Oh.
- 57:31And they kept the bit they kept, they kept showing the baby,
- 57:33like, show it once, cover it in a swaddle.
- 57:37We'll trust that the baby's there.
- 57:39You don't have to keep showing us this Cronenberg baby like.
- 57:47I agree, I thought the CGI baby. That shit was rough.
- 57:50Bro it's the big 20 fives what are we doing?
- 57:55Renesme a baby. And for those who don't know,
- 57:57Renesme is the name of Edward and Bellis baby in The Twilight
- 58:04Saga. You.
- 58:06Imprisoned on my baby. Famously in the final Twilight
- 58:09movie they have a CGI baby and it's pretty horrendous, but it's
- 58:15better than the the animatronic baby that they had developed,
- 58:19which was terrifying but I can't believe that they CGI had the
- 58:25baby. That was scary like that was
- 58:27that was a scary baby. I I love that trio, by the way,
- 58:32I got to say I love that trio. Iconic set, perfect skill set,
- 58:36perfect everything. We have a beautiful quote from
- 58:38the Hellmany, she says. I knew we made a great team ever
- 58:41since we went to the bathroom together.
- 58:44That's sisterhood that was so iconic.
- 58:47I almost I teared up right there.
- 58:48But it was so good. Shit's going down.
- 58:51They are delivering the baby. Hellmany 149 uses her Pino to
- 58:57cut the umbilical cord, which is the little knife that she uses
- 59:01as a hairpin. And she ends up using that knife
- 59:06just a few minutes later to stab her son because her son
- 59:13purposely switched places with her to be on the red team and
- 59:17have to basically murder at least one person to pass the
- 59:21route. And.
- 59:22He couldn't even do that. And he couldn't do it.
- 59:25There was a less at least one or two times where it was very
- 59:30easy. I don't want to say easy because
- 59:32it is. He was perfectly in the position
- 59:34where he could take someone out like he it was handed to him and
- 59:38he still couldn't do it. So and you learn a lot.
- 59:41I mean, that's the thing about the character development,
- 59:44right? It's like, oh, there was, of
- 59:45course there was this guy who was a total bum who was a shit
- 59:48to his mom. We know that.
- 59:50He stopped short of murder and stopped short of like, like he
- 59:53can't do it. He can't do it.
- 59:54We know that he couldn't do it. He was soft, the mother said.
- 59:58So multiple times, she said I, I raised him to be this way, to be
- 1:00:02better. He was never like his father,
- 1:00:06who was abusive toward. Yeah, How about that quote?
- 1:00:10That's one of my favorite quotes.
- 1:00:11When it's like, Mom, do you think that we really should
- 1:00:14switch? Like, you're an old lady and
- 1:00:16she's like, your father abused me like routinely.
- 1:00:19I don't have the exact quote, but it's like and who's still
- 1:00:22alive And she's like you are and she goes exactly like I'm still
- 1:00:27here. She's a hard bitch so.
- 1:00:29She's hard. She This really rocked a lot of
- 1:00:32people. First of all, I think Koreans
- 1:00:36really hated this, the fact that the mother killed his son.
- 1:00:40Well, if that's where they're going to start drawing the line.
- 1:00:42Well, The thing is the Korean audience really lambasting this
- 1:00:48choice for the mom to kill her son.
- 1:00:50Blood runs thicker than water in Korea.
- 1:00:54But it's a mercy killing like it.
- 1:00:58It's a beautiful, like I thought it was a beautiful moment.
- 1:01:01Right, I was going to ask you how you interpreted it.
- 1:01:04Was she killing her son to save the mother, the new mother and
- 1:01:09the baby? I think she was doing two
- 1:01:10things. OK.
- 1:01:12I think, and I think she was doing both.
- 1:01:14And I thought, I, I thought it was a really beautiful moment,
- 1:01:16as sad as it was, but that was her keeping score.
- 1:01:20She's like, I think she calculated it this way.
- 1:01:23I'm an old woman. I don't have that much time to
- 1:01:25go. My son is not going to survive
- 1:01:27this game. This the time's going to run
- 1:01:30out. He's not going to survive the
- 1:01:32game or he's going to take the life of a mother or of a baby,
- 1:01:36whichever that was going to shake out.
- 1:01:39And even if he wins, he's never going to make it past this.
- 1:01:43So she spared everybody. She very quickly did the older,
- 1:01:49wiser person thing and decided, OK, well, he's not going to kill
- 1:01:53me because I'm his mom. Can't let him take offered these
- 1:01:56people. Yeah, she offered.
- 1:01:57She. Said like oh he will kill me
- 1:01:59then. Yeah, and he wasn't going to do
- 1:02:01it. And she's like, well, at this
- 1:02:03point I'm just going to have to kill him.
- 1:02:06And then at least I can spare him completely being killed by
- 1:02:10the game itself. And I can spare this baby and
- 1:02:13spare this baby's mom where they have their whole life ahead of
- 1:02:16them. What do you mean by being killed
- 1:02:17by the? Game well, because he does get
- 1:02:20killed by he gets finished off by the pink soldiers.
- 1:02:24Ostensibly they go in and shoot whatever life is left out of
- 1:02:27him, but he's as good as dead. She stabbed him in the spine
- 1:02:30like he's gone, but she was like, rather than let my son
- 1:02:36live long enough to kill someone who really does really, really
- 1:02:39doesn't deserve it or get killed by this game because he's not
- 1:02:42going to win this game. She knows right off RIP he's not
- 1:02:45going to win. I would rather take him out
- 1:02:48since I brought him in, Let me take him out.
- 1:02:50It's better if it's done by someone who's familiar at least.
- 1:02:54It's a very warped thing, but everything in Squid Game is very
- 1:02:57war. It's a mercy killing.
- 1:02:59She's like, you're not going to survive in this game and I'm not
- 1:03:01going to let you kill someone. But also, I'm giving you an L
- 1:03:03and you're not taking it, so there's nothing left.
- 1:03:07I see. I thought it was a very
- 1:03:08dignified, It's a tragic situation, but I thought it was
- 1:03:11a very dignified death. I agree with the dignified part.
- 1:03:15I am like kind of adjacent to your other feelings about it
- 1:03:19because yes, she did in essence save the the new mother and the
- 1:03:25baby who she just delivered, right?
- 1:03:29That's AI feel like that's a special bond, right?
- 1:03:33You know, you just delivered this child.
- 1:03:35You just been with this girl. You've given her your food.
- 1:03:40You know, in this dire situation that we've seen in Season 2,
- 1:03:44like she gave her the egg. Immediately became a mother
- 1:03:47figure. She's a mother figure.
- 1:03:48She's very caring toward her, been caring and was looking out
- 1:03:53for her the whole time and she wasn't going to let anything
- 1:03:56happen to her period. But her son, she knew her son
- 1:04:00didn't have it in him from jump. She knew that he didn't have it
- 1:04:04in him. At some point in the tussle that
- 1:04:08happened earlier, he lost his glasses and the glasses get
- 1:04:12stepped on. I feel like that is symbolic
- 1:04:15because he couldn't see clearly, literally and figuratively after
- 1:04:20that. He lost his perspective, his
- 1:04:23morality after that, which is why he's just immediately is
- 1:04:27going for the most vulnerable person in the room to kill.
- 1:04:33When he had plenty of chances, he had chances and he didn't
- 1:04:37take any one of them so. Now I took it as the actual
- 1:04:42killing like the mother killing him I took it as and this is an
- 1:04:47oversimplification but follow me.
- 1:04:49I just rewatched Sinners the other day and when Stack kills
- 1:04:55Annie before she turns into a vampire, I thought it was the
- 1:05:00same thing here. You know, to avoid a calamity of
- 1:05:05moral, ethical, spiritual proportions, she preserved her
- 1:05:10son's essence by killing him. I could say that.
- 1:05:14Yeah, that's why when you said mercy killing, I was like, yeah,
- 1:05:17like it, It's it's we're on the same wavelength.
- 1:05:21We're on the same wavelength. I think it's more to save him
- 1:05:24from being killed because I don't think he would have gone
- 1:05:27through with it. But I think but I still agree
- 1:05:30with. So you don't think he would have
- 1:05:31gone through with killing the mother?
- 1:05:33No, I don't. I don't think it was going to
- 1:05:35happen. I don't think I think he would
- 1:05:36have gotten close enough and it just wasn't going to happen.
- 1:05:39Oh no, see, the time was going to run his.
- 1:05:41Glasses. He was fucking Velma out there
- 1:05:43and he was going to. He's going to do it.
- 1:05:45Patting the ground. OK, he's desperate.
- 1:05:51I could take. I can honestly take either one.
- 1:05:53I think that that's a really good interpretation.
- 1:05:56I hadn't considered the glasses and I think that the moms, I
- 1:06:00think her perspective was to spare him.
- 1:06:04Whichever shape that interpretation takes, it wasn't
- 1:06:07a malicious killing, and it wasn't like I'm going to save
- 1:06:10this woman I just met over you. It's just like, I think that's
- 1:06:13true. I don't.
- 1:06:13Think it was explicitly that. Yeah, I don't think so either.
- 1:06:17I think it was more of a numbers game and more of like really
- 1:06:20soberly looking at the situation.
- 1:06:21I mean, like, you know what, I don't know who's going to get
- 1:06:24out of here, but this girl and this baby need a chance.
- 1:06:27Like this girl was born like 35 seconds ago.
- 1:06:30We already we had our time so. I thought it was sad that she
- 1:06:35brought in new life. She cut the umbilical cord with
- 1:06:37the Benignon, and then she So she brings a new life with the
- 1:06:41Pino, but then she also takes her own son's life with it.
- 1:06:45And this cruel irony. That was heavy.
- 1:06:48Was heavy on me and then someone said hi.
- 1:06:52This is not an original thought someone was putting out on
- 1:06:54TikTok. 222 gives birth in A room with an under the sea theme
- 1:07:00and then there's squids on the wall.
- 1:07:02And most species of squid die after they give birth, so it's
- 1:07:05kind of fitting or portends the end of 222.
- 1:07:09Jesus. And I don't know if the creator
- 1:07:12necessarily thought I'm going to put squids on the wall to
- 1:07:17represent that the mother is going to die because squids also
- 1:07:20die after they give birth. I just think Squid Game squids
- 1:07:23see under the sea theme children.
- 1:07:26That's that's I think how it kind of happened.
- 1:07:29I'm not sure if they read into yeah, this particular sea animal
- 1:07:34does die after giving birth. If you didn't, I love it when a
- 1:07:37writer gets lucky. It's like, I love what you did
- 1:07:39with the squids because, you know, cephalopods, when they do
- 1:07:42this and this not, you're like, yeah, totally.
- 1:07:44And you just sleep. Now, the death that really
- 1:07:48rocked me in this episode was the trans character.
- 1:07:53That one, I had to pause the show.
- 1:07:56I was really, really emotional after 120 Bit the dust.
- 1:08:00Gutted. Gutted, Completely gutted.
- 1:08:02How did how did you come across this?
- 1:08:04I the writing was on the wall as soon as she was going to walk
- 1:08:08through and she's like, wait, I got to go back.
- 1:08:11Killed because she was a good person and she went.
- 1:08:13Back she thought and she thought about it for a split second, her
- 1:08:16instinct, the smallest, the tiniest moment.
- 1:08:20She was going to walk into that congratulations room just from
- 1:08:23the adrenaline, the relief and everything.
- 1:08:25And then she's like, and then she thinks and then she runs
- 1:08:29back to get them. I knew from I just knew as soon
- 1:08:33as she ran back that that was it.
- 1:08:35And of course, like that whole death was really sad and but I
- 1:08:40love the respect they gave it because they didn't show her
- 1:08:43like bleeding out and all this other stuff.
- 1:08:45Like it was a very solemn death. They really treated this
- 1:08:49character with so much respect. It was fantastic.
- 1:08:53Yeah, I love. The way that Paksungan talks
- 1:08:57about the character as well in interviews.
- 1:09:00So there's a lot of love there, a lot of respect for the
- 1:09:04character and how it's portrayed.
- 1:09:05Because I think in one, one clip he says, yes, trans characters
- 1:09:10in Korean media are really traded like caricatures.
- 1:09:14And I didn't want to do that for this character.
- 1:09:17I thought this needed to be different and wanted it to be
- 1:09:20respectful and all this stuff. So I really liked this
- 1:09:24character. I didn't know how much I loved
- 1:09:26the character until 120 died and yeah, killed by this
- 1:09:33motherfucker. That guy is such a piece of
- 1:09:35shit. I wanted him dead from episode
- 1:09:371. Bro.
- 1:09:39I wanted him dead from episode 1.
- 1:09:41I'm like, Oh my God, this guy is just, I hate him.
- 1:09:45I I hated him since the very I despise cowardice.
- 1:09:49I really, really do. But his specific brand of
- 1:09:54cowardice was unrelenting. Unrelenting.
- 1:09:58I was surprised that 333 had such a high body count.
- 1:10:02It was shocking. It was shocking how many people
- 1:10:04he was taking out. A proactive coward, just sick
- 1:10:08and for for her to diet his hands really pissed me off.
- 1:10:12Because you could tell this guy is constantly fucking around.
- 1:10:16Constantly not. Failing upwards.
- 1:10:18Failing upwards and not keeping his promises because he
- 1:10:22promises. The mother promises 222.
- 1:10:26I'm going to come find you after I pass the round, she hears on
- 1:10:30the loudspeaker. When he passes around, he's
- 1:10:32nowhere to be found. He's off fucking slaying people
- 1:10:36that, again, he doesn't need to do.
- 1:10:39He's doing extra. Yeah, he could have just done
- 1:10:42one and been done. And then he's the one that pulls
- 1:10:46up, kills Hyundu. That was the only way anyone
- 1:10:51could have killed Hyunju because like of course waited for her
- 1:10:54back to be turned to just like like, there was no way.
- 1:10:57Stabbed her in the back. Horrible.
- 1:11:00I hate that character. I hated him.
- 1:11:02He hated him. Almost as much as the salary
- 1:11:06man. 0100 player 100. Yeah, but someone did want us to
- 1:11:12talk about this, person said. Your thoughts on our favorite
- 1:11:15soft boy, Imchi Wan, playing a morally terrible character.
- 1:11:19Yeah. Player 333 is played by actor
- 1:11:23Imchi Wan, who is amongst one of my favorite soft boys.
- 1:11:27He's always like a really pleasant, soft, ethereal kind of
- 1:11:32good character, and then he does play really unhinged evil
- 1:11:39villains sometimes, and this is one of those times where he just
- 1:11:43goes full send in the other direction.
- 1:11:46That's really funny. Brilliant.
- 1:11:47Idol actor. Yeah, I have crazy eyes right
- 1:11:49now, but like, yes, he's morally reprehensible in this show and
- 1:11:55he does even more than just kill the trans character like.
- 1:11:59It's so bizarre. It's so bizarre.
- 1:12:01But you know what it is? I've known people like that.
- 1:12:05Oh my God, they fail upward in everything.
- 1:12:09In everything. And of all the people who could
- 1:12:13have killed her somehow, that one pisses me off the most
- 1:12:18because of course it was him. And then his baby is there and
- 1:12:22he's just like. It didn't matter like, and
- 1:12:24nothing mattered to this guy. He really, he thought he was a
- 1:12:29good guy, which is so juicy of a thing, yeah, of a thing to write
- 1:12:34in is that he thinks, he thinks he's, he's got it all figured
- 1:12:39out. He's got it in hand.
- 1:12:40It's giving promising young woman casting all those really
- 1:12:44like conventionally nice guys to be these horrible.
- 1:12:48That's what this is giving. Yes, because I think there's
- 1:12:50also a pervasive notion that there's still people that loved
- 1:12:55333 and are making excuses for his character.
- 1:13:01And I love reading the unhinged rantings of delusional.
- 1:13:05Like. People who cling to these
- 1:13:07characters. There's still people talking
- 1:13:09about the girl who TOP Thanos like shoved in the first one.
- 1:13:15Like I've seen edits about this girl.
- 1:13:16It's like she was in the show all of like 3 minutes.
- 1:13:20Like this is like your Boba Fett for like Squid game.
- 1:13:24Is this like girl? Yeah, but pretty privileged is
- 1:13:30on full display here because what do you mean you're making
- 1:13:33excuses for 3:30? He's deplorable.
- 1:13:39Dude ain't shit. Yeah, and look at the way he
- 1:13:41treats women and a Chilton. Whatever.
- 1:13:44And a newborn? Not only a newborn, it's his
- 1:13:48newborn, his flesh and blood. He's the father.
- 1:13:51Doesn't even ask to see the baby.
- 1:13:52No, no, he's just. Doesn't do anything.
- 1:13:55What a piece of shit. Like he's the piece of shit
- 1:13:57that's like playing video games in the delivery room and like
- 1:14:01taking up the bed in the hospital room while the.
- 1:14:03Forgets to bring the car seat to the hospital when they're on the
- 1:14:06day they leave the hospital. Ask for an extra warm blanket
- 1:14:10for him. Ask the nurse, how long is this
- 1:14:12going to take? Drinks his girlfriend, drinks
- 1:14:15his wife's ginger ale because like, she's probably feeling too
- 1:14:19queasy anyway. Right, right, right.
- 1:14:21Oh my God. We could go on and on.
- 1:14:24Oh the there's so many cowards in this, but David Lee, who
- 1:14:29plays player 125 means sue Ah. OK.
- 1:14:33Gets hopped up on drugs, Thanos leftovers and he kills the
- 1:14:39shaman. What did you think of the
- 1:14:41shaman? Cause the shaman, we talked
- 1:14:44about her and what she kind of represents and how the Korean
- 1:14:48populace would totally understand this archetype, this
- 1:14:51character, this religious extremism.
- 1:14:54Yeah, just absolute delusion. That she has all these followers
- 1:14:58and she's lying to them. She's lying about knowing what's
- 1:15:01going to happen. She has no fucking clue what's
- 1:15:03going to happen. She does predict a few things,
- 1:15:05but. She gets some things right, but
- 1:15:08it's always because she's she knows what to look for.
- 1:15:11Like it's one of those game recognized game kind of things.
- 1:15:14It's not the spirits. It's like, oh, like I know
- 1:15:16someone who's full of shit when I see one and I'm going to wield
- 1:15:19that to my advantage. Right, Right.
- 1:15:21She's just a master manipulator and she does try and manipulate
- 1:15:24456 when she's like, this is what you get.
- 1:15:27He's handcuffed to the bed or whatever and she's taunting him
- 1:15:31and saying like this is what you get.
- 1:15:33There's all these vengeful spirits around you and this is,
- 1:15:37you know, basically trying to. Had like a supernatural element
- 1:15:41to his suffering to make him feel worse to.
- 1:15:43Make him feel worse because he already knows that there's lives
- 1:15:47lost here. Yeah, and she's adding fuel to
- 1:15:50the fire. I wrote something to that.
- 1:15:53And then choking the spirit chick out was iconic.
- 1:15:58But because it was like it was so well deserved.
- 1:16:00Like he had to, he had to. Like, she was crazy.
- 1:16:04I thought she was a really interesting character, though I
- 1:16:07never got to the point necessarily where I hated her.
- 1:16:11Like hated her hate her because I think they paced her really
- 1:16:14well. Her arc lasted exactly because
- 1:16:16the thing that would have really made me hate her happened in
- 1:16:19this episode. But by the time I would start to
- 1:16:21hate her, she was killed in a brutal way.
- 1:16:25So one of the things that I loved about it was when she's
- 1:16:29guiding her followers through and she opens the door, that was
- 1:16:33such a terrifying scene. She opens the door and quietly
- 1:16:35closes it and starts scurrying away, and they come out and kill
- 1:16:38her followers. That was so scary.
- 1:16:42But then taking the arrows out of blood and marking, she's so
- 1:16:47committed to the bit because she finds the exit, realizes again,
- 1:16:51the like the symbolism that everything about it is so
- 1:16:54genius. It's like, OK, you conned your
- 1:16:56way. You got here by yourself, you
- 1:16:58can't get out. You needed to rely.
- 1:17:00She should have had her followers with her.
- 1:17:02They all had a distinct key. But I love that she adds these
- 1:17:06arrows to a point where she's going and you can tell she's so
- 1:17:10used to being a con artist for being a spirit shaman.
- 1:17:14Or maybe she's delusional enough to think that she is a shaman,
- 1:17:17but she's so committed to this bit that even after getting
- 1:17:21these people killed and everything, she wields that to
- 1:17:24try to get 100 and tell him, oh, I can hear the spirits, I know
- 1:17:28where I'm going. It's this way, It's this way.
- 1:17:30It's that way. And he finds the exit.
- 1:17:32I thought that was genius. She was a cool character.
- 1:17:35Yeah. 100 Leaving her in the room, though that was dirty
- 1:17:38work. Dirty work.
- 1:17:41That was so scary. I don't think we ever see what's
- 1:17:43inside the congratulations, you made it through room.
- 1:17:48It made it that much more eerie we never saw.
- 1:17:50It we never saw what was in that room 'cause they.
- 1:17:52Everyone was a reused room though.
- 1:17:55Episode 3 is titled It's Not Your Fault, and here we see that
- 1:18:01the VIPs has free reign of the place and they are able to
- 1:18:07masquerade as pink soldiers. Yeah, we get the bad English.
- 1:18:12We see that they're excited to kill.
- 1:18:14I hated everything about it. I hated it.
- 1:18:16They're just exhilarated by participating for once.
- 1:18:21There's no stakes for them. It's just it's.
- 1:18:24Ridiculous. At least it was honest.
- 1:18:27Like they're boring people and they're cheesy people.
- 1:18:29Like very disconnected from reality.
- 1:18:33So it's like funny to see them just like acting like this.
- 1:18:36I'm like, oh, you really got nothing else going on.
- 1:18:39They're like, wow, look at this one.
- 1:18:41It's like. One of the pink soldiers VIPs
- 1:18:45says Mamma Mia. It's a me Mario.
- 1:18:50What the fuck? The Harmony gives a beautiful
- 1:18:54monologue. Player 149 says I'm not going to
- 1:18:59read the whole thing. But she says no matter how you
- 1:19:01look at it, life is just unfair. Bad people do bad things, but
- 1:19:04they blame others and go on and live in peace.
- 1:19:07Good people on the other hand beat themselves up about the
- 1:19:11smallest things. And she goes on to say like my
- 1:19:14kid was like that. My young chic was a soft kid,
- 1:19:17foolishly so blamed himself when his employer went bankrupt.
- 1:19:20And gives a little back story on the son.
- 1:19:24She says one day I got sick of him being so pathetic I couldn't
- 1:19:27take it anymore. So I yelled at him.
- 1:19:28I regret all the pain I went through to bring you into this
- 1:19:31world. I'll just pretend I never had a
- 1:19:33son like you. So get out of my sight now, you
- 1:19:35useless idiot. And that night he overdoses and
- 1:19:40he had even left a a suicide note saying he was sorry for
- 1:19:43being such a failure. He took it really bad, really
- 1:19:46badly, as one does when their mom says I wish I'd never had
- 1:19:49you. Yeah.
- 1:19:51And she rushes him to the hospital and prayed to God, this
- 1:19:56prayer that I'm sure a lot of people have thought at least in
- 1:19:59their lives. That she'd do anything if her
- 1:20:02boy was saved, even jump into a pit of fire if that's what it
- 1:20:05took. But guess what she says in the
- 1:20:09end? I killed him with my own hands.
- 1:20:11I killed my own child that. Was really intense.
- 1:20:15And I think a lot of people were surprised that the next morning
- 1:20:21rolls around and player 149 has hung herself.
- 1:20:24She's committed suicide. I wonder why they would find
- 1:20:27that surprised. I was.
- 1:20:28Not surprised because I was fully expecting that.
- 1:20:30Yeah. Like I thought that this was
- 1:20:32like her monologue. This is her big send off.
- 1:20:35Yeah, I wasn't surprised. It was gut wrenching, yeah.
- 1:20:39Don't get me. Wrong, but this lady just said
- 1:20:41there was basically never going to be a scenario where she lived
- 1:20:43without her son. Yeah, that was so sad.
- 1:20:47Everything with those two associates.
- 1:20:48I knew they were headed for it, but I like, I'm not like I can
- 1:20:52appreciate the way they went out, though in its own, there
- 1:20:55was a dignity to the way that they went out.
- 1:20:57They're like, you know what, let's go like.
- 1:21:00I could see where you're coming from.
- 1:21:02I think that her saying that her son wasn't a perfect, her son
- 1:21:08was a failure, and she at some point in her life did resent him
- 1:21:13and said that said as much to his face.
- 1:21:17You know, these people are extremely flawed and imperfect.
- 1:21:23And as a mother figure who has been such a beautiful mother
- 1:21:28figure throughout the show, for her to give this speech and say
- 1:21:32this really sad story about saying I had wish I had never
- 1:21:36had a son like you is extremely vulnerable and painful for her.
- 1:21:41Yeah. It's it also serves to make 456
- 1:21:44feel a little better about himself and not blame himself
- 1:21:47because she's like, look, I fucked up.
- 1:21:52I fucked up in the worst way a parent can.
- 1:21:55I killed my own child. And it makes 456 kind of gain a
- 1:22:00new perspective, really. I the fact that even in the
- 1:22:05first, even with all his problems, she wasn't even close.
- 1:22:08Yeah, she. Loved her son.
- 1:22:10That's all it was. So I don't I, I don't see the
- 1:22:14reason for the backlash for her killing him.
- 1:22:17I think that it was all very well-rounded and very well
- 1:22:21explained. So I don't know, powerful
- 1:22:24moment. How did they not get an Emmy?
- 1:22:26I don't. Know, I don't know.
- 1:22:28That, that's one of those. Well, The thing is, this was
- 1:22:30this season wasn't up for any Emmys because it wasn't
- 1:22:33ineligible. But The thing is, it's a year is
- 1:22:39a long time to keep this thing fresh in the campaign cycle.
- 1:22:45That's true. So will it get Emmy noms next
- 1:22:48year? I don't know.
- 1:22:50There's shows we haven't seen and haven't come out yet.
- 1:22:53It's. Only July.
- 1:22:55It's only July. That's what I'm like.
- 1:22:56I'm like Oh my God, this is horrible because this was
- 1:23:00released right at the beginning of the next cycle.
- 1:23:04Yeah, that wasn't a good idea. So if they were gunning for
- 1:23:07Emmys, this is the wrong timing. They should have just released.
- 1:23:10Never mind, they should have just released it in one season.
- 1:23:13It should have just been season 2.
- 1:23:14Release it like 2 weeks into you know, and then but whatever.
- 1:23:18I know whatever anyway you. Never listen to us.
- 1:23:21I know. So we get to the fifth game, the
- 1:23:25jump rope. That was sick.
- 1:23:27Just so they have to cross this bridge, which has a hole in the
- 1:23:32middle. It's it's broken, it's a
- 1:23:34rotating rope, and they have 20 minutes to get across.
- 1:23:39Bad news for 222 because she just fucked up her ankle in the
- 1:23:42last game. She fractured it really badly.
- 1:23:46She was not going to make. It she was not.
- 1:23:48Going to make. I had no suspense for that
- 1:23:50whatsoever. I'm like even 456 can't carry
- 1:23:53this out. She was done.
- 1:23:56The fact that the rope spins faster.
- 1:23:59And it's a thick ass rope too. It's made of brass, like it's
- 1:24:03this brass rope. That was the that was probably
- 1:24:07the scariest game. I don't know if you feel.
- 1:24:11It was scary because I've never, I think maybe once in my life
- 1:24:16I've played like double Dutch. Yeah, which?
- 1:24:20I think one of my favorite jokes that you've ever said is like,
- 1:24:23let's make other words and slang words.
- 1:24:26Like what about double Dutch? Like oh man, she got double
- 1:24:29Dutch. Yeah, double Dutch on someone so
- 1:24:34erratic, so quick. All these people get double
- 1:24:39dutched in this episode. They really did.
- 1:24:42They really. Did.
- 1:24:43Yeah. And we see, we finally see.
- 1:24:45There's so many theories about what the hell was going to be
- 1:24:49this game. That was interesting because it
- 1:24:52didn't the trailer. The teaser was like a train
- 1:24:55light. And.
- 1:24:56Then they just abandoned that. I don't know what that was
- 1:25:00about. Did was did anything look train
- 1:25:03like about that? Yeah, they were on train.
- 1:25:05Track, they were on a track, but like it still felt like it was
- 1:25:08going to be something else. I thought it was going to be
- 1:25:10like the the main theory that was going around.
- 1:25:13What is that moral dilemma? Oh, like the chain dilemma?
- 1:25:18Yeah, yeah. That was like the main front
- 1:25:22runner for a theory of what it was going to be.
- 1:25:24Yeah, what it is is, and I think we covered this in the Season 2
- 1:25:27review, is the doll is Yonghi, which is based on a character of
- 1:25:33the same name from South Korean textbooks from the 70s and 80s.
- 1:25:36And then Yonghi has a boyfriend and his name is Tolzu.
- 1:25:41And some of these two dolls, Yonghi and Tolzu, are on either
- 1:25:46side of the tracks and they're spinning this fuck ass rope
- 1:25:52round. Listen, did I think that 222 was
- 1:25:58going to make it? No, no.
- 1:25:59Was it really sad when she decides to jump off and fall to
- 1:26:03her death? Absolutely.
- 1:26:06She does have an interaction with the baby daddy.
- 1:26:09Fuck ass 333. She says that baby is mine.
- 1:26:12The baby has nothing to do with trash like you.
- 1:26:14We never want to see you again, not even in our dreams.
- 1:26:18Like she reads him for Phil. That's a sick burn.
- 1:26:20Yeah, I love that. Because he's saying, you know,
- 1:26:23you have to get up. Whatever.
- 1:26:25She's like get the fuck away from me.
- 1:26:28Like I'd literally rather fall to my death, let her break every
- 1:26:31bone in my body, leaving my child an orphan, than to cross
- 1:26:35this bridge with. But you know what's funny?
- 1:26:37It shows how much more I hate this guy because he doesn't
- 1:26:41notice how he doesn't offer to help her at all, or even to like
- 1:26:46none of that. He doesn't offer to take the
- 1:26:48baby, but he doesn't offer to help her either.
- 1:26:50He does the coward thing and waits till the very last minute
- 1:26:53when things speed up to give her an out.
- 1:26:56So maybe she'll be like, no, you go on without me.
- 1:26:58I can't make it like he waited till the last minute.
- 1:27:02It wasn't everything he does. He's one of those very
- 1:27:05calculating, cowardly people. I, I couldn't cope with it.
- 1:27:08I couldn't cope with it. Like, you let another man save
- 1:27:11your kid. You're completely disconnected.
- 1:27:14What's going on? He's like, I'll come back for
- 1:27:15you. Like, 456 is like going off.
- 1:27:18Like, I'll be back. Whatever.
- 1:27:19He's just standing there. Like, yeah, OK, cool.
- 1:27:21As long as I don't have to do it, like, I don't know.
- 1:27:23Oh. My God, anyway, so.
- 1:27:26I hate that he made it. Through I hate that he made it
- 1:27:28through. But anyway, 333 was never going
- 1:27:30to be the saving grace for 2/22. And I also love how if you add
- 1:27:3611111 to 222 it is 333 for some reason.
- 1:27:41I like that. Like.
- 1:27:43That's like that. That's how I remember their
- 1:27:47numbers too. I love that actually.
- 1:27:52It's pretty great because like, this whole thing is is nuts.
- 1:27:57I think I want to talk about how the baby inherits the mom's
- 1:28:02number. Oh yeah, that was.
- 1:28:05It was completely because of the VIP's that they changed the
- 1:28:10rules of the game and they considered the baby another
- 1:28:13player. That was really weird like even
- 1:28:16for the game, I thought that was really weird.
- 1:28:18I I don't know why I thought they would be like, OK, hold the
- 1:28:22phone, there's a baby out there. At least let's get this baby out
- 1:28:25of here. Something.
- 1:28:26No, I don't know why I thought that, but the VIP's.
- 1:28:31So you gave them more credit? I gave the game runner.
- 1:28:35More credit maybe, front man. Front man, I gave front man way
- 1:28:38more credit. Especially because you know that
- 1:28:41you lost a child. Right.
- 1:28:43I didn't think that he would let that happen necessarily.
- 1:28:49If the VIPs weren't there, I wonder if he would have had them
- 1:28:53collect the baby and be like, you'll get the baby at the end
- 1:28:55of the game if you survive something like that.
- 1:28:58But I didn't expect him to leave a newborn baby on the field.
- 1:29:03But maybe I can't fathom that level of evil.
- 1:29:06Like, I don't know. Because if it were me and I was
- 1:29:10a sadistic game runner, I would have still been like, you know
- 1:29:14what this counts as PTO. Let's get this bitch out of here
- 1:29:17and get get her her kid, get her things, send her out.
- 1:29:21Let's get her out of this game. Just go away.
- 1:29:24But no. Or at least I'm going to grab
- 1:29:26the baby and keep it in captivity.
- 1:29:28Captivity. Well, one of these pink like
- 1:29:31soldier people like will take care of this kid and if the mom
- 1:29:34lives then great if not, but I didn't expect them to be like
- 1:29:37OK, well the baby inherits the number.
- 1:29:39That was crazy. Work The baby is now Player 222.
- 1:29:44Horrible. She's got a spot on the roster
- 1:29:47because 456 took her across. And what if we freaking?
- 1:29:52The IP says this is a bigger twist in the resurrection of
- 1:29:55Jesus. I think I threw up a little in
- 1:29:59my mouth because it was just. That it's corny and boring, like
- 1:30:04they thought they ate with that. The symbolic nature of the baby,
- 1:30:10I guess we have to talk about that because someone does want
- 1:30:12us on Instagram. Someone did want us to talk
- 1:30:14about the baby. Everything about the baby, and I
- 1:30:17understand like the baby is so, you know, a wild card in the
- 1:30:22show. So the baby inherits some other
- 1:30:24spot. And if the baby wins, the baby
- 1:30:27would win the money, right? Like, and now if even if they
- 1:30:30stop the games now they vote to stop, the baby would get an
- 1:30:33equal share. And this enrages the rest of the
- 1:30:38players. And they're like, that's not
- 1:30:42fair. And they're saying that's not
- 1:30:44fair over and over. They're just pissed because the
- 1:30:48baby is not a true player. It's totally dependent on
- 1:30:51somebody else, is completely helpless.
- 1:30:55I mean, there's a lot of things here, Like the creator Pang
- 1:30:58Dongyuk is definitely trying to say, yeah, it's not fair that
- 1:31:02the baby should inherit the money, But it's also not fair
- 1:31:04that the baby is in this hellhole, that the baby is now
- 1:31:08paying for the mother's sins. Why do future generations have
- 1:31:12to suffer for the sins of the past?
- 1:31:14The baby is the future represents the future.
- 1:31:18Hands across America, right? Right.
- 1:31:22But it's true, though. It's true.
- 1:31:23And it's it's funny how in their absolute greed, they don't see,
- 1:31:26OK, there's a newborn baby in a clandestine blood sport game
- 1:31:31who's freshly an orphan. Both her parents are dead, but
- 1:31:35it's not fair that it gets money.
- 1:31:37If what? Horrible.
- 1:31:40Yeah, they're all horrible, especially 100.
- 1:31:44Yeah, especially 100, who's the ringleader on all of this?
- 1:31:47And 100. We're just waiting for 100 to
- 1:31:49die at this point. The whole time we're just
- 1:31:52waiting. Couldn't come fast.
- 1:31:53Enough no player 333 still votes, still votes to keep going
- 1:31:59even after witnessing his baby Mama jump to her death.
- 1:32:02And the baby is now considered a player and can obviously die and
- 1:32:07is just helpless. It's hours old.
- 1:32:11Because they keep the pot anyway if they all reject it.
- 1:32:15That. That's what kills me every time.
- 1:32:17I think my brain just doesn't let me acknowledge that rule of
- 1:32:21the game because I always I think it would just enrage me to
- 1:32:25a point where I wouldn't watch it.
- 1:32:26Like they that's enough. There's like 6 of you now you
- 1:32:30can stop now. Like you can just like leave and
- 1:32:32get your money and go. Right.
- 1:32:34How much more? Right.
- 1:32:36Like what it because what is it? What is the cost like the bounty
- 1:32:39on each person? Isn't it like?
- 1:32:41The pot is CN¥45.6 billion, so each contestant is worth
- 1:32:46CN¥100,000,000, which is about 67,836 U.S. dollars.
- 1:32:53I mean if they went that far I'd leave that much on the table
- 1:32:57even out of laziness too. Like just I don't want to play
- 1:33:00another game. Let's go home bro.
- 1:33:01Like. Yeah.
- 1:33:03Hate it? The next scene, I think major
- 1:33:07scene, is we have a face off against Ebogen's front man and
- 1:33:114:56 because in the night they're planning on killing
- 1:33:14them. Yeah, the other guys are like,
- 1:33:16OK, well, we're just going to off the baby and off 456.
- 1:33:20Keep going, right? Keep playing.
- 1:33:23But now there's two less people to contend with, two less
- 1:33:26players, and the front man gives 456A blade and unmasks himself.
- 1:33:35I thought this was going to be a bigger moment.
- 1:33:36Me too. I thought this was going to be a
- 1:33:38lot bigger than it was. They kind of downplayed that the
- 1:33:42front man is the man behind the curtain.
- 1:33:44Yeah, you know what I'm saying? I thought that it fell flat.
- 1:33:47I thought I thought so too. It's like that was they treated
- 1:33:50it like it was like this guy killed your best friend and he
- 1:33:54was on your team and he's still alive.
- 1:33:55Like there's so many shocks that 4-5 sixes, 450 sixes, like
- 1:34:00response just didn't click really.
- 1:34:04And I'm surprised given the opportunity that he didn't just
- 1:34:07kill him. I'm really surprised at that.
- 1:34:09But that's the whole thing is that his character is not a
- 1:34:12murderer. He's not.
- 1:34:14He's a good a good man. What was cool about this
- 1:34:17interaction is that he was calling him by his name.
- 1:34:21The whole interaction, you know, frontman was calling him, you
- 1:34:25know, Kian. Yeah, instead of his number.
- 1:34:28Instead of his number, this whole interaction, pleading with
- 1:34:30him with very real emotion to kill or be killed this night is
- 1:34:35important. You're going to die.
- 1:34:37The baby's going to die. Here's this knife.
- 1:34:40Do what you got to do. And then he says, as 456 is
- 1:34:44walking out, player 456, do you still have faith in people?
- 1:34:50And it's very important that he suddenly calls him by his player
- 1:34:55number instead of his name. Yeah.
- 1:34:58It takes away his personhood, his humanity.
- 1:35:03It's meant to convict Ian. Convict.
- 1:35:06A naive but good man, you know, make him not kill, perhaps in
- 1:35:11the hopes that the other players might.
- 1:35:13Maybe he would think, oh, the other players might do the right
- 1:35:16thing and not kill me and the baby.
- 1:35:19You know, it throws a lot of things in question for. 4
- 1:35:24statistics Because he doesn't, I don't think because he is
- 1:35:28shocked at just how low people would get every time.
- 1:35:30Yeah, he's just like. When he realized they're going
- 1:35:32to kill him, he was like, and he's like swaddling the baby.
- 1:35:35But I mean, he knew before he went up to see the front man, he
- 1:35:37was like, this is they're going to come at my throat.
- 1:35:40And that's going to be it, yeah. But I love that interaction.
- 1:35:44It is a callback to the Season 1 finale when the old man player
- 1:35:50001 Oynam asks After all this, do you still have faith in
- 1:35:56people even after everything you've been through?
- 1:35:59So you can see the parallel between the original Old Man 001
- 1:36:05Oynam and front man the new 001. That's so heavy.
- 1:36:10It's so heavy. He was given the same
- 1:36:12opportunity. The same question, the same
- 1:36:15challenge. What do you believe?
- 1:36:17Do you think people are still worth it, worth putting your
- 1:36:21faith into? And that that is a heavy
- 1:36:25question that hangs over the whole show.
- 1:36:26It is like at the thesis of the of the show, I would say we get
- 1:36:31in the very first bit of the next episode, episode 5, we get
- 1:36:34a flashback to the Front Man's games where he was given the
- 1:36:39same ultimatum and a knife, kill or be killed and told to kill
- 1:36:44the trash, looking at humans as trash.
- 1:36:47That's the original 001 owing them saying this to him.
- 1:36:53But in this case, in his scenario, he does do it.
- 1:36:58He does commit this mass murder that night.
- 1:37:01And brutally, too, yeah. And that was clever that we see
- 1:37:04the person we see him killing was the last of all the.
- 1:37:07Other people to. Finish Killing.
- 1:37:11It's just such a heavy show. Like honestly.
- 1:37:16It is. It is a heavy show.
- 1:37:18We see 456 hesitating to kill even one person, and it's player
- 1:37:24100, the most vile of the bunch. Like we hate player 100.
- 1:37:31Hand it to me, I'll do it for you.
- 1:37:32Hand it to me, I'll do it. But he has a vision of our North
- 1:37:37Korean girl from Season 1 saying don't do it, Adashi, you're not
- 1:37:42that kind of person. Stayed pure.
- 1:37:46Not that she says that, but that's the sentiment.
- 1:37:47Like stay. But I mean, he's rather he
- 1:37:49stayed pure in his own way, in a way.
- 1:37:52Like in a way. Because he's already killed
- 1:37:55Kanganol's character. Yeah, mind you, like he's
- 1:37:58already killed someone with his bare hands.
- 1:38:00He's already tainted at this point.
- 1:38:04He was like, not for me like that was, but that's what's so
- 1:38:07funny that he would go out to kill, but he wouldn't kill.
- 1:38:12My God, he wouldn't kill the front man.
- 1:38:13Still doesn't really make sense to me then, because you know
- 1:38:17what I mean? Like that whole thing was a bit.
- 1:38:20I still don't know how. Because there is He's calling
- 1:38:23him hyung. Yeah, but it's still.
- 1:38:26You know, Kyun is calling the front man hyung I believe, which
- 1:38:30is older brother in that interaction that they had
- 1:38:33earlier in episode 4. That's telling that he still
- 1:38:38considers their bond. Their relationship still
- 1:38:43considers him an older brother figure.
- 1:38:45But this dude literally killed your best friend like Wyatt
- 1:38:48like. I don't.
- 1:38:49I know. I don't it, but that's the
- 1:38:52complexity, right? Yeah.
- 1:38:53So OK. But he doesn't do it and then we
- 1:38:57he doesn't kill anybody that night and we get the final game.
- 1:39:00It is sky Squid Game. I saw this production thing is
- 1:39:05behind the scenes production thing where they were hand
- 1:39:08painting all of flowers on the floor.
- 1:39:12That wasn't like CGI. Interesting.
- 1:39:15Yeah, so when they fall off of those pillars, that's all pan
- 1:39:20painted flowers. OK, OK.
- 1:39:25Just a note that I have. Are what did you think of this
- 1:39:29game? This game, well, it's
- 1:39:32interspersed with the like the North Korean pink soldier Noel
- 1:39:38trying to save that other player trying to save the dad with the
- 1:39:41terminally ill child. That whole plot line was crazy.
- 1:39:45What did you think of that? I liked it.
- 1:39:47I liked it. I I liked it because it's like
- 1:39:50this is a woman who her motive was pretty clear, right?
- 1:39:55Like she was devastating. Like she was devastated from
- 1:39:58living a life in North Korea, leaves now, can't find her
- 1:40:01daughter, has to work as a mascot at a theme park, and not
- 1:40:05even a very good one. Her life is just falling apart.
- 1:40:08She's trying to. So I thought it made sense.
- 1:40:11I thought it made sense with her character.
- 1:40:12And I do like the resilience she had of just, yeah, I came from
- 1:40:17North Korea, like. I know what goes on.
- 1:40:20I don't, you know, I can take them, I can take them.
- 1:40:23So I really liked it. I like that she saved somebody.
- 1:40:27I like that she managed to save somebody, which is really
- 1:40:29interesting when you consider Gian can't really save anyone.
- 1:40:34Couldn't save anyone at all, you know what I mean?
- 1:40:37So I really like that whole story.
- 1:40:39It was a good like B story because there's the AB and the C
- 1:40:42story, right? Like.
- 1:40:43Yeah, I had someone DM me another creator and they didn't
- 1:40:48like her story and really thought it was kind of
- 1:40:53pointless. I can read what they said.
- 1:40:56Let's hear it. They said never understood what
- 1:40:59Pacquiao Young's deal was either.
- 1:41:00Wants to save a random kids dad dot dot dot yet shoots others in
- 1:41:05the face and in the end dot dot dot ends up with nothing.
- 1:41:09At least give her the baby and 45,000,000.
- 1:41:12Well, you got to draw the line somewhere, right?
- 1:41:15Like there's work and then there's life.
- 1:41:19You know what? I Yeah.
- 1:41:20I draw the line somewhere. She wanted to save this man.
- 1:41:23I'm not going to let this terminally ill child become an
- 1:41:28orphan. Like she felt some type of way
- 1:41:31about the little girl, about the dad.
- 1:41:33She didn't want the little girl to die or be left orphaned, but
- 1:41:38likely just die because there was no one to care for her and
- 1:41:41no one to pay for the hospital bills and and make sure that she
- 1:41:44got adequate care. She did everything out of
- 1:41:47necessity too. She.
- 1:41:49Was a mother. I think this has to do with her
- 1:41:52being a mother and not saving her own child or, you know,
- 1:41:58bringing her child with her and escaping North Korea and the guy
- 1:42:03that was the, like, lesser manager.
- 1:42:07Yeah. He brought her on board because
- 1:42:10he thought she was similar to him, was just as cold as him,
- 1:42:15just as inhuman as him, because he too lost someone close to him
- 1:42:19because he couldn't procure a kidney.
- 1:42:21Which is why he in turn created the whole organ harvesting side
- 1:42:28hustle. It's, and that's what I liked
- 1:42:31about it, right? Because it's like we get to
- 1:42:33humanize these pink soldiers a little bit.
- 1:42:36And it also shows this idea is flawed from the ground up that I
- 1:42:43think mercy and grace are very necessary to view the human
- 1:42:46condition, right? Because without that, that falls
- 1:42:49apart. It's like, OK, everybody in the
- 1:42:51arena is trash. It's like, OK, but now you have
- 1:42:54people over here doing an entire organ smuggling thing.
- 1:42:58Good intentions or not, everybody's trying to get theirs
- 1:43:00no matter what level of the run they're on in this whole game.
- 1:43:04I found it very believable. And I, I also kind of interpret
- 1:43:08it as the girl just kind of going postal.
- 1:43:11You know what I mean? She's like, you know what?
- 1:43:13I did not lose my family and escape a fucking dictatorship to
- 1:43:18come down here and work in a Bunny outfit and be trapped in
- 1:43:21some kind of organized crime rate.
- 1:43:23I think she just snapped. She this is a person who had
- 1:43:26literally nothing to lose and she got to save someone in the
- 1:43:29process. So.
- 1:43:32Yeah, his quote for the managers quote about her, he says I was
- 1:43:35wrong about you. I should have put you in the
- 1:43:38game like them. I thought you were different
- 1:43:40since you left your child behind.
- 1:43:43Stop worrying about someone else's kid and go be with your
- 1:43:45own in the sky. I'll give you a painless send
- 1:43:48off. And I was like, oh, so she's fit
- 1:43:52to kill others as a merciless pink soldier because she's a bad
- 1:43:57mother. That's why he thought, oh, she's
- 1:43:58perfect. Good job.
- 1:44:00She's heartless. She left her.
- 1:44:02Childhood, they thought, are sociopaths.
- 1:44:03Yeah. So I thought, Oh.
- 1:44:06I thought you were different. I thought you were a killer like
- 1:44:08us. You're a killer like them, like
- 1:44:11the trash. Yeah, that was very telling to
- 1:44:14me that she was hired because she was a bad mother.
- 1:44:18Do we even know why? I don't remember honestly.
- 1:44:22Like what happened to her daughter, She just lost track of
- 1:44:25her. She didn't leave her today.
- 1:44:27So it's presumed that she's dead, that the her daughter is
- 1:44:31dead. But these smugglers who help
- 1:44:35people escape from North Korea, we're like, hey, we have a lead
- 1:44:38on your daughter. She might be in China.
- 1:44:40So there is some semblance of hope.
- 1:44:44That's where we leave office. She's like, I'm heading to China
- 1:44:46to figure it out. I'm going to maybe reunite with
- 1:44:49my daughter. I don't know.
- 1:44:50So we don't get an answer to whether or not it in fact is her
- 1:44:54daughter. But I mean, was so I'm trying to
- 1:44:58remember how she got there. She paid the service to get them
- 1:45:01there and I don't think they could have gotten all three of
- 1:45:03them. But it's not like she chose to
- 1:45:06go by herself and leave her family.
- 1:45:08She said what happened? She said I shot my superior.
- 1:45:13Oh, that's right. OK, nevermind.
- 1:45:15So it wasn't like a planned getaway.
- 1:45:18She just got out. She just got the fuck out.
- 1:45:21I bet her daughter is in China. It's up to you if you want to
- 1:45:25interpret it as yes, she's going to totally have a happy ending
- 1:45:29and reunite with her daughter in China who somehow is in China
- 1:45:32and they got her out. She's not dead.
- 1:45:35I think I could buy that. OK, I'm not going to burst
- 1:45:40anyone's bubble if you want to leave that happy.
- 1:45:43Happy you got to hope for something like if not, at least
- 1:45:48she can adopt this girl who lived by like stalking her at
- 1:45:51the theme park. I don't know.
- 1:45:53Right blended family. Guess so.
- 1:45:56Chosen family. Hey, hey, final game is Sky
- 1:46:00Squid Game. As we said, we get a surprise
- 1:46:02cameo from TOP, who's back as a hallucination hanging off the
- 1:46:05Square tower. I missed him so much.
- 1:46:08I was very happy to see him as they knows again.
- 1:46:13Of course, kills me every time. Dude, I was confused because the
- 1:46:22pink soldier Noel is going around trying to figure out
- 1:46:25where the records are that she needs to destroy for the player
- 1:46:29that she's rescued and she opens the door and there looks to be
- 1:46:35001 taxidermied. The old man is there and I
- 1:46:40cannot for the life of me figure out if he was taxidermied,
- 1:46:44preserved, or if it was just a wax figure.
- 1:46:49A wax figure of him. Madame Tussauds.
- 1:46:51Yeah, like Madame Tussauds got up in there.
- 1:46:53I think it was AI think it was a taxidermy.
- 1:46:55I want to. Believe it.
- 1:46:56I genuinely think it's a taxidermy.
- 1:46:58They're just crazy enough to do that.
- 1:47:00Yeah, that was so fucking scary. When they opened it, I was like,
- 1:47:03Oh my God. I was like, Oh my God, is that
- 1:47:05him? That was the second scariest
- 1:47:07jump scare in the whole series. Yeah, because the top one, I
- 1:47:11think you know which one it is. We'll get to it.
- 1:47:15I absolutely think it's no coincidence that the finale
- 1:47:19players are all men. Yes.
- 1:47:21Doing a pantomime of a fair democratic voting process, which
- 1:47:25is, I think, a direct quote from Player 100 to decide the fate of
- 1:47:29a helpless infant girl. Yeah.
- 1:47:33I'm like they. Really clubbed us with that one.
- 1:47:35Yeah, clubbed us over the head with that one player, 333 doing
- 1:47:45his big one here with him versus 456 and the baby.
- 1:47:50And I mean, I was really taken aback that even when 456 places
- 1:47:56the baby on the gangway, he doesn't go and pick up the baby.
- 1:48:00He uses the pole to pick up the sleeves and move the baby over
- 1:48:05to his platform. No paternal instinct.
- 1:48:08No paternal instinct, nothing there whatsoever.
- 1:48:12No love, his first time holding the baby was to hold it over the
- 1:48:17edge and threatened to kill it, threatened to drop it.
- 1:48:20Which was so that was like anxiety on 10.
- 1:48:23And I'm like, it's a sweater. It's not even a real swaddle.
- 1:48:26You don't know if it's tide. I thought that like there was a
- 1:48:30moment where it looked like the baby was going to slip and I was
- 1:48:32like, I don't. I just, I hated him so much.
- 1:48:38I really did like it. Just not a pleasure to watch.
- 1:48:41And of course, you know, we have the big moment.
- 1:48:45So yes, so a lot of people were upset.
- 1:48:47So there's a couple of things that I don't think I've
- 1:48:49mentioned. So people, this is going back
- 1:48:53earlier, but there's videos of people attempting the jump rope
- 1:48:59game one legged or with somebody on their back or whatever to try
- 1:49:05and justify that 222 could have lived.
- 1:49:09For what? Her ankle was fucked up.
- 1:49:12And look, I think you're full of shit and grasping at straws.
- 1:49:19This is like the Jack could have made it at the end of Titanic
- 1:49:23argument all over again. It feels really useless to have
- 1:49:27this conversation. She had just given birth with
- 1:49:30nothing, no medical attention whatsoever.
- 1:49:34She was sleep deprived. They all were.
- 1:49:37They were all hadn't had proper nutrition and water and all the
- 1:49:41rest and she fucked up her foot. Even jumping would have sent her
- 1:49:49into extreme pain. She literally tried to stand and
- 1:49:52was like ah and had to sit down like.
- 1:49:55Never mind jumping all the way across like get out of.
- 1:49:59That one legged bro I don't see. That's something that makes zero
- 1:50:03sense to me. Could that have happened?
- 1:50:06Maybe. Is it likely?
- 1:50:08No. Sometimes you take the
- 1:50:09likelihood this is a very narrow bridge with a hole in the
- 1:50:14bridge. Mind you, it look like anywhere
- 1:50:17from one to two foot circumference diameter like
- 1:50:22brass, fast swinging like she wasn't going to make it across
- 1:50:26and 456 putting her on his butt. That wasn't going to work
- 1:50:30either. No, he's already compensating
- 1:50:32for his own weight and you see him struggling to hold a footing
- 1:50:36because of how narrow the path is.
- 1:50:38You got to jump straight up. As somebody who watches double
- 1:50:42Dutch competition, no, you're here.
- 1:50:44I do. I love, I love like I really,
- 1:50:47really, really love double Dutch.
- 1:50:50I implore anybody who thinks that that's possible to watch
- 1:50:54double Dutch fails on YouTube. A narrow quarter inch piece of
- 1:51:00twine swinging under your feet and people trip over that and
- 1:51:05bust their ass like so hard. You think this girl with a
- 1:51:08messed up ankle is going to like Bunny hop over?
- 1:51:11This. Never mind she just gave birth.
- 1:51:15I mean, I, I was upset about that.
- 1:51:17The second-half of that, which is what prompted going back to
- 1:51:20that game, is that people were like 456 could have hit the
- 1:51:25start button before he shoved 333 off the platform into his
- 1:51:30death. He didn't have the chance.
- 1:51:32And it's like, I this is reductive.
- 1:51:34Like I don't, I don't care to have that conversation that that
- 1:51:37is not. Watching the same show, like
- 1:51:39there's a baby being held over a ledge about to like, like, no,
- 1:51:44he couldn't. Like, could he have?
- 1:51:45Yeah, but that's not exactly your first priority when
- 1:51:48someone's trying to kill an infant and you.
- 1:51:52I was like, very upset about those.
- 1:51:55I don't. I don't know.
- 1:51:57I don't know, Yeah. I know.
- 1:52:01I'm just mad about anything. But anyway, 323 Yum Shi won.
- 1:52:07He should get an Emmy nom for best supporting in my opinion.
- 1:52:11I agree, I already complain. Whether he gets one next year
- 1:52:14considering season 2 was completely snubbed and locked
- 1:52:17out. We can hope and it's and you
- 1:52:20know what in. The Season.
- 1:52:21Namu's kid is in China too, so there you go.
- 1:52:24Like, and he'll get the Emmy and then the kid will be found in
- 1:52:27China and we're set. We're going for the happy
- 1:52:30endings. But anyway, so 333 bites the
- 1:52:34dust finally, and we're left with the decision, you know, is
- 1:52:38456 going to kill the baby and win the game again?
- 1:52:43Or is he going to kill himself and the baby wins?
- 1:52:47He saves the baby. And at this point, if you're
- 1:52:51still questioning and you're still like, I wonder what he's
- 1:52:53going to choose, I think you've missed reading the whole show.
- 1:52:58Yeah, there was only one way that was going to end.
- 1:53:01Yeah, exactly. There was only one way it was
- 1:53:03going to end. He was always, he even said at
- 1:53:06some point I was. I was never a good father.
- 1:53:09And he knew it. He knew his shortcomings.
- 1:53:12He knew he was a bad son. He knew he was a bad father.
- 1:53:15And you think this man who has raged against the Squid Games
- 1:53:23and tried to save as many people as possible?
- 1:53:27It's going to kill. It's going to kill that baby.
- 1:53:30Get get out of here. No.
- 1:53:31This CGI, this Renesme baby no. He's not going to kill Renesme,
- 1:53:37no. So he spends the time, you know,
- 1:53:41that is left to him. Yeah.
- 1:53:43Staring up at the VIP booth and cradling the baby and he has
- 1:53:49this short speech. The lines are we are not horses,
- 1:53:56we are humans. Humans are.
- 1:53:59And it trails off because he is falling to his death.
- 1:54:03He has chosen to commit suicide and save the baby hard.
- 1:54:08Way to go. And he falls back in like an
- 1:54:10accepting backward cross motion to his death.
- 1:54:14Very obviously sacrificial. Kind of a Jesus figure in this.
- 1:54:20And I love this ending. Yes, I love this ending.
- 1:54:25It is a call back to Season 1, the finale of Season 1, where
- 1:54:30the front man takes 456 blindfolded in the limo back to
- 1:54:34the city because he's just won the Squid Game.
- 1:54:37And 456 is like, incredulous. He's like, how could you do this
- 1:54:41to us? Just doesn't take it in at all.
- 1:54:43Doesn't care about the money. Doesn't.
- 1:54:45No, he's still like, well, how do you how do you figure that
- 1:54:49you can do this to us? And the front man says you like
- 1:54:54betting on horses. You people are horses, you're
- 1:54:57animals. That's.
- 1:54:59So horrible. Is what he says.
- 1:55:01And so for Kyun to circle back at the end of season 3 and says
- 1:55:06we are not horses, we are humans, I just get chills.
- 1:55:12It's such a beautiful moment. It's a beautiful moment, and he
- 1:55:15trails off. He doesn't finish the sentence.
- 1:55:17Humans are, I think that The Hollywood Reporter asked the
- 1:55:22director, Huang Dongyuk, what is the end of that sentence?
- 1:55:26And he says there is no end. You fill it in.
- 1:55:29It's very hard to define humans because we're so capable of
- 1:55:36immense joy, immense love and mercy and grace and all of the
- 1:55:40rest. But then we're also so selfish,
- 1:55:44so greedy, so horrible to each other.
- 1:55:47That's true. And you can fill it.
- 1:55:49I like that little Rorschach moment where you can fill it
- 1:55:52with whatever you want because you're going to get a different
- 1:55:54answer from anybody. And it's I just, I can see why
- 1:55:59people. So now that we're here, this,
- 1:56:01believe it or not, this was not what upset me about the ending.
- 1:56:04It was really all about the confrontation with the game
- 1:56:09runner game. Front man.
- 1:56:11Front man, sorry, I don't like you saying the confrontation
- 1:56:14with the front man was really what bothered me more than
- 1:56:17anything. But I was really prepared for
- 1:56:19this. Like when I saw the big when the
- 1:56:21baby showed up, I'm like, that's it.
- 1:56:23The baby's the only one that's going to make it out of this.
- 1:56:26Like there's no way. And I I love the ending, but I
- 1:56:29can see why people would hate it.
- 1:56:31But I would have hated even more some kind of like, oh, you
- 1:56:36thought he died, but I actually smuggled him out because he's
- 1:56:40like the Batman to my Joker and my like, no, he he like, you
- 1:56:44know what I mean? Like they could have gotten very
- 1:56:47cartoony with it. It's like, no, like he made that
- 1:56:49choice. And that I think that for anyone
- 1:56:52who didn't like the ending, I would just say this.
- 1:56:54It kind of reinforces the theme of humanity and it strengthens
- 1:56:57it in a very powerful way. Because if he just lives, what
- 1:57:02was it for? Like, that's the point.
- 1:57:04He died. I'm human.
- 1:57:07Yeah. To live.
- 1:57:08And and even if him if, if they would have really cheaped out
- 1:57:11and the baby and him lived right where it's like, I'm going to
- 1:57:15keep you both alive and da, da, da, like front man.
- 1:57:17Because that's how I imagine an American version of this going.
- 1:57:21Like, oh, I'm going to keep them both alive so I can keep an eye
- 1:57:23on them. Whatever.
- 1:57:24That's what makes the ending powerful.
- 1:57:27Like he had to die. He had to prove, hey, there's
- 1:57:30somebody out here who actually does give a shit and doesn't see
- 1:57:34us like animals. Like I thought it was a
- 1:57:37beautiful ending. I thought it was a beautiful
- 1:57:38ending. This was not the original
- 1:57:40ending. The Hollywood Reporter did ask
- 1:57:43the director about the original ending because Goon was
- 1:57:47originally not going to die. The director said.
- 1:57:50And I quote, I don't know if I can call it an original ending,
- 1:57:53but in the beginning I had a vague idea about how I would end
- 1:57:56the story. And back then it was having Goon
- 1:57:59end the game in one way or another and leave alive and go
- 1:58:02see his daughter in America. So originally I thought the
- 1:58:05person who witnesses the American recruiter would be
- 1:58:09Guillen. But as I begin writing the story
- 1:58:11and as I begin to think more and more about what do I want to
- 1:58:14deliver with the ending of the story and also what should
- 1:58:17Guillen's journey and what should his destination be, I was
- 1:58:21witnessing more and more what was happening around the world.
- 1:58:24And I thought it was more fitting for Guillen to send this
- 1:58:27powerful and impactful message to the world with his death.
- 1:58:31And that should be how the story comes to a close.
- 1:58:35Fair enough, I can get behind the ending.
- 1:58:38I thought you were behind the ending.
- 1:58:40No, but I mean, like, I can get behind that.
- 1:58:42I can get behind him. Choosing this over even seeing
- 1:58:46like an American recruiter would have been exhausting.
- 1:58:48I don't like it when things end so well and then it's like, oh,
- 1:58:53it's the beginning of something new.
- 1:58:55Yeah, exactly. It would have been the beginning
- 1:58:56of something new. Just the thought of them
- 1:58:59conducting another games of comb use, recruiter being in the
- 1:59:03subway and doing it all over again this cycle.
- 1:59:06It will not end. That alone at the end of season
- 1:59:091 made him not get on the plane and see his daughter.
- 1:59:12He was like no I need to use the money to end this fucking thing.
- 1:59:16So if he went to America after possibly dismantling the Korean
- 1:59:20Squid Game and sees Cate Blanchett?
- 1:59:24We have to talk about. Which we have to talk about that
- 1:59:27he sees the American recruiter. That would be the start of
- 1:59:31another. He has to keep going.
- 1:59:33He can't just live his life on the money and be with his
- 1:59:37daughter. No, he's a good man.
- 1:59:40He's going to take it all down as much as he can.
- 1:59:44Yeah, I'm glad that it ended this way because I, I can't
- 1:59:47imagine something more tedious like another season of this.
- 1:59:51I can't like, it's been a good ride, but like, you know enough,
- 1:59:55we can't miss you if you don't leave.
- 1:59:56Like, like you got to go. Like you got to go.
- 2:00:00Can we please to. Oh I I just wanted to point this
- 2:00:03out apropos of almost nothing. A character that cracks me up
- 2:00:07every time he's on screen. A much lesser character,
- 2:00:10obviously, but Troy will soak, soak.
- 2:00:15He just cracks me up. He's such a goofy guy, the one
- 2:00:18who's like, I got to go with my gut feeling like there's
- 2:00:21something about this, like Fisherman that robs me the wrong
- 2:00:24way. Oh my God.
- 2:00:26OK, we'll talk about that in a second.
- 2:00:27Oh my God, we'll talk about that in a second.
- 2:00:30Because that was the whole thing.
- 2:00:31That was the C plot. Yeah, that was AC plot, but yes,
- 2:00:36so one of the thing that talking about the pink soldier 0 eleven,
- 2:00:40who is Noel and she goes to China to see if her daughter is
- 2:00:45still alive or whatever. At this point she's hopeless in
- 2:00:49the story. She's still in those apartments
- 2:00:52and found all of this stuff on her.
- 2:00:56She's got a file and there's a photo of her husband, her
- 2:01:01daughter in North Korea. It is just an emotional moment
- 2:01:05for her because she's like, Oh my God, we're all under
- 2:01:08surveillance. This is the rabbit hole is very
- 2:01:10deep here. And she feels completely
- 2:01:13convicted because she did abandoned her child in North
- 2:01:17Korea. Nothing's going to take away
- 2:01:19that from her. Yeah.
- 2:01:21And so she's feeling the lowest of the low, but she sees 456
- 2:01:28make this sacrificial jump, and she takes the finger off of the
- 2:01:34trigger because she was going to commit suicide in this moment of
- 2:01:38despair. And his act emboldened her to
- 2:01:41live that. Was beautiful.
- 2:01:44It was so moving. Yeah.
- 2:01:46And she just gets the hell out of there.
- 2:01:47And then she gets the. Fuck out.
- 2:01:49Yeah. As she should.
- 2:01:50Yeah, as she should. Somebody, I don't remember if it
- 2:01:54was just one person or not, but somebody was like, why does 456
- 2:01:57die with his eyes open? I think this is my theory.
- 2:02:02I haven't seen anybody talk about this.
- 2:02:04So original thought for once. The season 1 old man, 001, Yeah,
- 2:02:12also died with his eyes open, just as the clock struck
- 2:02:16midnight and a Good Samaritan did come and bring help to the
- 2:02:20homeless man freezing to death in the street.
- 2:02:23Gian turns to him, his dead body now eyes open, and he says, you
- 2:02:28saw that, didn't you? You saw that you lost.
- 2:02:32And in the same way that Gian dies with his eyes open,
- 2:02:37witnessing that despite technically losing, he won,
- 2:02:42Yeah, he proved something that people still have good in them.
- 2:02:46He's a witness to his own Good Samaritan moment.
- 2:02:50That's beautiful. I hadn't linked that together.
- 2:02:52I actually really like that. It's already at a point where I
- 2:02:55really like the ending, but now this is just like, oh I got to
- 2:02:59see this through, literally. Yeah, I like it.
- 2:03:02He's looking on, maybe toward the future, the baby.
- 2:03:06And it's interesting that the front man does not close his
- 2:03:10eyes. Just leave him there.
- 2:03:12He just leaves him there. But he did close the old man's
- 2:03:16eyes. Yeah.
- 2:03:18At the end of Season 1. It's mercy, right?
- 2:03:20Like or respect or something. I think it's it's something the
- 2:03:25relationship between Front Man Ebigen's character and 456
- 2:03:31Guillen. They're two halves of the same
- 2:03:34coin. They've gone through the same
- 2:03:35thing, but Front Man has sold his soul.
- 2:03:38Yeah, completely vacant. Completely sold his soul.
- 2:03:42And so the other thing that I wanted to ask you was, why do
- 2:03:46you think the front man participated in the games a
- 2:03:49little bit? I think he just wanted to kind
- 2:03:52of mess with 456, but at the same time, I think he wanted.
- 2:03:56It's that curiosity, right? Yeah.
- 2:03:59Like the bully who is ultimately just, like, intrigued by the
- 2:04:03person that they're bullying. I.
- 2:04:04Agree. Like there's something it's
- 2:04:06like, oh, how come he gets to go do this?
- 2:04:09And I don't like how he wanted to see it up close and personal
- 2:04:12and interact with this interesting person because I
- 2:04:16imagine 456 has to be the most interesting person to like, roll
- 2:04:20by there in a while. I would agree, yeah.
- 2:04:22And somebody coming back into the game, that's a once in a
- 2:04:25lifetime opportunity. The front man knows he's in no
- 2:04:28real danger. And he gets to see this like,
- 2:04:31it's kind of like his Marie Antoinette moment, you know?
- 2:04:33Like he gets to be one of the pores, like, hang out in the
- 2:04:37field. Do you know what I mean?
- 2:04:40Right, right. Because that's how.
- 2:04:42I had that Chateau that was like a little farm village.
- 2:04:46Yeah, like cosplaying being a. Village, the proletariat.
- 2:04:51Yes. She's like, oh, this is how I
- 2:04:53buy bread. I think that that was like, I
- 2:04:56think that was it. That was his Marie Antoinette
- 2:04:58moment. I think he was so intrigued by,
- 2:05:00like, here's a person who's going through the same thing
- 2:05:03that I did, but he's choosing to do something different.
- 2:05:06Yeah. And it makes him, you can't help
- 2:05:09but wonder. It's like, damn, did I get it
- 2:05:11wrong? Right.
- 2:05:12This could have been my chance exactly.
- 2:05:14I could have done something good, but I decided to take this
- 2:05:17route. Yeah, so.
- 2:05:19There's a hubris Yeah 2 front man that I'm not sure if people
- 2:05:25picked up on. He is sure that he's right.
- 2:05:29Yeah, he speaks with a lot of certainty.
- 2:05:32Same with the original 001. I think that would have, I think
- 2:05:37that's the kind of like festering prejudice that gets
- 2:05:40proven in a like, they don't have a control for their theory,
- 2:05:44do they? Like they're getting what they
- 2:05:47perceive the worst of the worst, the most desperate people, and
- 2:05:50putting them in a room and seeing the depths that they sink
- 2:05:52to to kill each other, but they don't have a control of like,
- 2:05:57oh, this is what a good person is.
- 2:05:58This is what a standard person is.
- 2:06:01So it's kind of like an inaccurate experiment that kind
- 2:06:05of acts like a false positive to their prejudices.
- 2:06:09Oh, like, yeah, see, I knew all these people were trash.
- 2:06:12And it's like, well, yeah, but you never stop to consider you.
- 2:06:14Got people at the most. Desperate.
- 2:06:16Exactly. So I think it just rotted them.
- 2:06:19That's why they speak with a certainty.
- 2:06:20Like yeah, I knew people were just trash.
- 2:06:23Like I knew it, like I knew it was that because that's wave
- 2:06:26after wave after wave of seeing all these people kill each
- 2:06:28other, the same predictable situations, but they never think
- 2:06:34of like the flaw in their game. Like you're setting them up to
- 2:06:40do that. That's not something people are
- 2:06:42just going to do. Like also frontman, he could
- 2:06:48have just done it for the same reason the old man did it, to
- 2:06:51have fun, to feel. Something.
- 2:06:53To go back to a simpler. Time playing jacks.
- 2:06:57Yeah. Marbles.
- 2:06:58Marbles. So we get a six month time jump.
- 2:07:01Also, man, I could sit here and talk about front man versus 456
- 2:07:06all day, but there was some people who were saying there was
- 2:07:11no character development. There was nothing there.
- 2:07:13It was all wasted potential. And you know, they got hosed
- 2:07:20basically on the front man. And I don't believe that for a
- 2:07:25second. They were like, why didn't he
- 2:07:26react when Guin made this decision not to kill those
- 2:07:31people in the room with the knife that he just gave him?
- 2:07:35And I was like, what do you mean?
- 2:07:36He did react. Yeah, it's.
- 2:07:38I saw something on his facial expression.
- 2:07:41I did too, and I don't. It's comments like that that
- 2:07:44like convinced me that the like the people not to be mean, but
- 2:07:51it's like I can see like the phone in the hand, the laptop
- 2:07:56and the lap and then the TV playing Squid Game in the
- 2:07:59background because I'm like, are we watching the same show?
- 2:08:03Like you can see? Oh my God, yeah.
- 2:08:07He's. I don't agree with that one bit.
- 2:08:09Definitely upset at the very. Least obvious.
- 2:08:13It's so obvious because he's like.
- 2:08:15That he made a different decision.
- 2:08:19He. He.
- 2:08:19Wants to prove himself right so bad.
- 2:08:22It's like the Joker moment. He wants.
- 2:08:24To cope with the two boats. Yeah, he wants to.
- 2:08:27Because if he doesn't, that flies in the face of his
- 2:08:30worldview even more because his whole view is like, why I didn't
- 2:08:34have a choice. So I do this because, and it's
- 2:08:37fine that I do this because humans are trash.
- 2:08:39And at every turn he's proven wrong and he gets more and more
- 2:08:42pissed. That's why he killed 456's best
- 2:08:46friend. That's why he did it.
- 2:08:48That's why he let like strung everyone along.
- 2:08:51He was trying so hard to corrupt him.
- 2:08:52Testing him. And it didn't work.
- 2:08:54Yeah, yeah. So.
- 2:08:57But he respected 456. Yes.
- 2:09:01Immensely like a like you might respect a very good opponent in
- 2:09:06a game. And I love that, I really do.
- 2:09:10Six months time jump. Someone stole 456's winnings
- 2:09:13from the Pink Hotel. I wonder who it is.
- 2:09:15Obviously it's front man. Front man drops off the winnings
- 2:09:21and his belongings to his daughter in LA and people were
- 2:09:25like he wasn't very respectful. He was, I thought, very
- 2:09:29respectful and the fact that he showed his face.
- 2:09:32Yeah. Huge deal that the daughter got
- 2:09:35to see the front man's face. He wasn't respectful like the
- 2:09:39sociopathic. Like what?
- 2:09:42Like, yeah, like he was respectful.
- 2:09:44He was like delivering the news. Like to a fall.
- 2:09:46It was like a fallen soldier. This is kind of person who
- 2:09:50engages with the public anyway, but I that's the exact parallel
- 2:09:54I thought. Like the fallen soldier
- 2:09:55treatment where they bring the flag and they do the rights and
- 2:09:58they do all that. Like that's exactly how I saw
- 2:10:00it. I brought a box with a bow and
- 2:10:02kind of gross to give him his outfit outside blood.
- 2:10:05Yeah. And I wonder if that girl like
- 2:10:08is going to pick up on the fact of what the pin number.
- 2:10:10Is yeah, I don't know, she didn't seem too sharp, but maybe
- 2:10:13she will. She seemed I think the pizza is
- 2:10:16here. The fuck bro?
- 2:10:19You've been in California for like 9 years girl right?
- 2:10:24No. No, I think it was maybe 5.
- 2:10:26That's long enough. Oh whatever, that's fine.
- 2:10:30Front Man also drops off player 222, the baby with his brother
- 2:10:36Wiha June, and the debit card is loaded up with her winnings.
- 2:10:4045.6 billion won. Let's talk about Wiha June
- 2:10:43really fast because I hated the C plot.
- 2:10:48Really. Yeah.
- 2:10:49With the cop and the boats and him uselessly driving around the
- 2:10:57waters and the islands and trying to investigate and I'm
- 2:11:00like, yeah, we're not getting anywhere.
- 2:11:03He ignored the bad juju that that guy was feeling.
- 2:11:11The guy cracks me up. Yeah, Tay Wusok, as you said, he
- 2:11:16was like, yeah, man, I think that captain's in on it.
- 2:11:19There's some bad vibes here. Bad vibes.
- 2:11:21Yeah, I'm not getting on that boat.
- 2:11:22I'll call you later. Like that would be enough.
- 2:11:25And I think that did piss me off because it's like you're a
- 2:11:28detective. Like what do you mean?
- 2:11:31Detect. Yeah, like I it was frustrating.
- 2:11:34It was really frustrating. I thought that that absolutely
- 2:11:37went nowhere. The fact that we Ojuna actually
- 2:11:41gets on the island as it's about to self destruct.
- 2:11:44He has very little time and faces off against the brother
- 2:11:49only to yell at the front man who's the brother mind you and
- 2:11:54say why? Just yell at him and ask why and
- 2:11:57never. It was a huge disappointment.
- 2:11:59Never get the answer, never reveal that his brother is the
- 2:12:03front man. Only too late.
- 2:12:05It was like, dude, what is this? I found it.
- 2:12:10I found that to fall really, really flat.
- 2:12:13Like, really, really flat. That was one of the more
- 2:12:16disappointing because in the first season, I love the
- 2:12:18detective subplot. Yeah.
- 2:12:20Or in the second it was. The first season.
- 2:12:22First season I love the detective sublot, a cool like
- 2:12:26criminal investigation going on love that.
- 2:12:28But it really fell flat. Like I think it really peaked
- 2:12:32with the very obvious twist that the fisherman was corrupt even
- 2:12:37though it's one of it was. So it's one of the oldest tropes
- 2:12:41too. It's like, oh, the sea chanting
- 2:12:43mysterious, like fisherman, like whatever, pull the other one.
- 2:12:48I don't. OK, let's talk about Cate
- 2:12:51Blanchett. Please, I, I need, we need to
- 2:12:54talk the way I I fucking cackled.
- 2:13:00I cackled. I laughed so hard I had to pause
- 2:13:04and regain my composure because Cate Blanchett, just for
- 2:13:08context, is a really really big running gag slash respected
- 2:13:14actress in our house. Oh, really?
- 2:13:16Like, big. It's a big running gag to the
- 2:13:19point my siblings don't watch Squid Game.
- 2:13:21And I asked them if they ever would.
- 2:13:22They said no, that it's too much gore, too much whatever.
- 2:13:25So I was like, OK, so I was like, I want you to see this bit
- 2:13:28of Squid Game. And they?
- 2:13:30Were they busted out? Oh my God, My sister was like,
- 2:13:35of course she's like, I don't know anything about this show,
- 2:13:39but of course, of course it's going to be her.
- 2:13:42Why wouldn't it be the only? Person I would have busted out
- 2:13:47laughing more for would have been Tilda Swinton.
- 2:13:52That would have rocked my shit. That would have rocked my shit
- 2:13:55too if Tilda Swinton was out there in her best metrosexual
- 2:14:01suit playing taxi in an alley in LA.
- 2:14:09Oh my God. This is so it was so like I and
- 2:14:16I caught it pretty quickly because I had I rewatched tar a
- 2:14:20couple of weeks ago. Oh really?
- 2:14:21So I guess her like silhouette is top of mind.
- 2:14:24No, you did not recognize her from the back.
- 2:14:26From the ponytail because it's they show her from the side from
- 2:14:29a distance. I'm like.
- 2:14:30Shut up. Bitch is that Kate where I'm
- 2:14:32shut and they zoom in and there she is with her hyper masculine
- 2:14:38imposing figure glaring down and then bitch slapping someone.
- 2:14:42I'm like, this is so this is so her, this is so her.
- 2:14:46And I loved that detail. I loved it.
- 2:14:50The only thing I didn't like about it was they were playing
- 2:14:53this Korean game. Yes.
- 2:14:55I was like, OK, yeah, sure. So the director specifically
- 2:14:59said, look, this was not to introduce AUS Squid Game, this
- 2:15:03was not to introduce a spin off. This was not for anything in
- 2:15:06particular. This was literally for my own
- 2:15:08purposes, to end my show, to show.
- 2:15:12Basically the Cyclo is repeating the the front man.
- 2:15:15Evan's character had always suspected that this thing was
- 2:15:18larger and that it was global, maybe.
- 2:15:21And then, sure enough, he runs into Kate Blanchett's recruiter.
- 2:15:26It's like they didn't trust it is.
- 2:15:28Not if they were playing. Jax.
- 2:15:31Jax Paper, Scissor, rock. Something else?
- 2:15:36Hopscotch. Hopscotch.
- 2:15:38Literally anything. Literally anything else I would
- 2:15:41have been way better with it. But they're playing the Korean
- 2:15:44taxi game, no? Like that take that breaks the
- 2:15:48immersion I think. Let me explain to this drunk,
- 2:15:52ostensibly homeless, mentally ill man what this Korean game is
- 2:15:59like. I, and I didn't.
- 2:16:00It also really I saw it as a huge missed opportunity because
- 2:16:04if they were playing Jax, like, and I'm going to take it a step
- 2:16:08further, if they had trusted the Korean audience enough to know
- 2:16:12that whatever they were playing wasn't because that felt like a
- 2:16:16very safe play to me, like, oh, showing this Korean game,
- 2:16:20whatever, so that the audience can understand that they play.
- 2:16:23I think that if you would have trusted the audience enough to
- 2:16:26know, oh, they're playing a game that must be popular in America
- 2:16:30or must be well known in America, that point would have
- 2:16:33been so eerie and so terrifying to end on.
- 2:16:36And the impact would have been better instead of like, oh,
- 2:16:39that's interesting, The game's widespread.
- 2:16:41But why were they playing this Korean folding paper?
- 2:16:44Game. Yeah, it shouldn't be called
- 2:16:45play. Game even.
- 2:16:46If they like look oh like when Cate Blanchett looks over, it
- 2:16:50would have been more interesting for the front man to look at her
- 2:16:54and slowly deduce what was going on.
- 2:16:57Oh, instead of and then being like oh.
- 2:17:00Exactly, I would have found that more interesting because it was
- 2:17:02by happenstance that he saw her. So it would have been
- 2:17:05interesting to see them playing Jacks and then just her bitch
- 2:17:09slapping the dude again and then like turning to the camera and
- 2:17:13then Cate Blanchett and giving him that really eerie knowing
- 2:17:16look. Like that whole thing would have
- 2:17:18played out so much better. But apparently now David Fincher
- 2:17:22is doing Squid Games. It's rumored.
- 2:17:24It's rumored that David Fincher is heading up the USA Squid Game
- 2:17:31spinoff. There is no confirmation that
- 2:17:35this is happening, but we'll see.
- 2:17:38I'd watch that. If Cate Blanchett is the
- 2:17:41recruiter, I'd watch that. I don't have high hopes for it,
- 2:17:44but I'd watch. It I'm upset because even though
- 2:17:46he's like, oh, this isn't setting up a spinoff, you have
- 2:17:49set up lore. Right.
- 2:17:52And you know how you can prove that you didn't get another bomb
- 2:17:55ass actor? Like with ADR vocals you got,
- 2:17:58Cape you got. Cape fucking Blanchette.
- 2:18:01Like, that was such bullshit. So somebody actually fought me
- 2:18:04on this yesterday. Like I just commented online,
- 2:18:07like it was in a discussion post about Squid Game.
- 2:18:10I was like, this is such great casting.
- 2:18:12Like, I know nobody here is thrilled about a potential
- 2:18:16American Squid Game, but I mean, come on.
- 2:18:18And they're like, Oh yeah. Well, they weren't even setting
- 2:18:22up an American one. And they go on this long, like
- 2:18:25litany of reasons why an American 1 won't work.
- 2:18:27And I'm like, OK, so first of all, like, oh, let's let's take
- 2:18:31a seat. But second, you don't hire Cate
- 2:18:34Blanchett for literally nothing. Like something's coming.
- 2:18:38Like you don't put it would have been a throwaway casting.
- 2:18:41They would have gotten any blonde right off the street, You
- 2:18:44know what I mean? It's stunt casting and the
- 2:18:46director was like, I always wanted someone with presents,
- 2:18:49someone who was of her caliber to play the recruiter because
- 2:18:55Kong you is of Cate Blanchett caliber.
- 2:18:58He was so good. He was so amazing.
- 2:19:00He was so good, like he should have gotten an Emmy.
- 2:19:04Oh, he was never I made a face, but.
- 2:19:09The crash out with the bread and the the.
- 2:19:11Hollywood Reporter did ask him, the director about came
- 2:19:15Blanchett's casting and how it came about.
- 2:19:17Did you write the cameo with her in mind?
- 2:19:19He says. In the beginning, I was tossing
- 2:19:21around different ideas. I thought, should it be a man
- 2:19:23that we see as a recruiter? But I thought that unlike in the
- 2:19:26Korean version, having a woman who's a recruiter for the
- 2:19:29American system would be a nice contrast and also quite a
- 2:19:32powerful, impactful statement. So we were set on having a
- 2:19:35woman. Then I thought, who would be the
- 2:19:37right fit for that? It's a very short scene, there's
- 2:19:39only one line, so we needed someone who had that level of
- 2:19:42presence and charisma to completely dominate the screen
- 2:19:45in that instant. And that naturally led me to
- 2:19:48Cate Blanchett. I've always been a fan of her.
- 2:19:50She's someone who can instantly grab your attention with a
- 2:19:53single stare. So that's how we set on her.
- 2:19:56I honestly couldn't have casted that any better.
- 2:19:59I couldn't have casted that any better because it really is
- 2:20:03perfect casting. She's such an imposing woman.
- 2:20:07Yes, Like, very. Like, they're right about that.
- 2:20:10The presence is. I just thought that she just
- 2:20:13sleeps in a closet and shows up to intimidate people.
- 2:20:16You know, I mean, like, she's kind of like, you remember how
- 2:20:18you would think of your teachers as a kid, right?
- 2:20:20Like, oh, they sleep at the school.
- 2:20:22That's how I feel about Cate Blanchett.
- 2:20:24She's a terrifying professional figure who we don't know where
- 2:20:30she goes, but now we know she's a recruiter.
- 2:20:34Shit, right, Right. Actually, Kate Blanchett, they,
- 2:20:37they just went to Squid Game headquarters and said we need
- 2:20:42Kate. I know she's out recruiting
- 2:20:45right now, but we need her in. Bring her, call her up, call her
- 2:20:48in. Call her up.
- 2:20:49Yeah. Oh yeah, We saw her on La Brea.
- 2:20:51Let's go pick her. Up.
- 2:20:53OK, OK. So I think we're at the end of
- 2:20:56this. We've been here for a while,
- 2:20:59Miguel. Any last thoughts about Squid
- 2:21:01Game? This is it.
- 2:21:03No more Squid Game. That is, no more squid, more
- 2:21:06Korean. Squid Game.
- 2:21:07I would urge anybody who didn't like the ending to rewatch, let
- 2:21:13some like sit with it for a bit and watch it slowly.
- 2:21:16I think that this is probably one of the greatest shows I've
- 2:21:19ever seen in my life. Even with its flaws, I think
- 2:21:23it's a like phenomenal show. I think it will stand the test
- 2:21:28of time. And I like that the fisherman
- 2:21:33got killed with a harpoon. That was cool.
- 2:21:36Like I I love that. With that, we're gonna wrap it
- 2:21:44up. Thank you for coming on the
- 2:21:46show, Miguel, and watching Squid Game Three and talking at length
- 2:21:50about it. That's it.
- 2:21:54That's it. Thanks, Miguel.
- 2:21:55That's been our show. I'm Jessica and this has been
- 2:21:58the Tebaki Rambles podcast.
