The Roman officer had understood, that in the military hierarchy it is important to obey to whatever the superior said. And that is how he had moved up the hierarchy, he was in authority now. The reason why he came to Jesus was because he was looking for help: for healing of his servant. And Jesus was willing to help. But the officer said “no, just give an order and my servant will be well”. The officer had understood that Jesus is in authority over all that tries to harm us, over evil spirits, over mental diseases and over sicknesses etc. We as weak average humans by ourselves might be lost…
