• 1:19
Speaker 4: That I'm always excited to see and and just kind
• 1:26
Speaker 4: of marvel at the idea that like she would actually
• 1:28
Speaker 4: call us and say, you know, she's gonna be here,
• 1:31
Speaker 4: and yes, I feel especially like it's just it's just
• 1:38
Speaker 4: it's like it's running into a star to me. You know,
• 1:41
  Speaker 4: she is a star. That's how that's She's.
• 1:44
Speaker 5: A She's a boxing legend. Do you want me to
• 1:47
Speaker 5: go on a little bit more. She you know, is
• 1:51
Speaker 5: the face of of you know, the generation of women's
• 1:55
Speaker 5: sports actually coming to fruition in my opinion. And she
• 2:00
Speaker 5: is a repeat offender tonight on our podcast, which tells us,
• 2:04
Speaker 5: you know that she she she likes, she might like
• 2:07
Speaker 5: us a little bit. She also has her her faithful dog,
• 2:10
Speaker 5: Champ with your and so our guest tonight is Christy Martin.
• 2:15
  Speaker 5: Welcome Christy.
• 2:16
Speaker 6: It's always great to be with you. Guys.
• 2:18
Speaker 3: Well, thank you for coming. And just just so everybody knows,
• 2:24
Speaker 3: here we go, what was Champ right came to me
• 2:29
Speaker 3: and would not come to Lisa. That's just just just
• 2:32
  Speaker 3: for the.
• 2:32
Speaker 4: Public to know, just just so that I let everybody know.
• 2:36
Speaker 5: Oh man, Christy, you might have to go get a
• 2:39
Speaker 5: check up for Champ Cham. It might not be feeling
• 2:41
  Speaker 5: all the time.
• 2:44
Speaker 3: That's what it was. Christy.
• 2:47
  Speaker 4: I have a I have a question and it's and
• 2:50
Speaker 4: it's kind of off the off the path that from
• 2:54
Speaker 4: your sport, but I'm gonna use it as a as
• 2:57
  Speaker 4: sports in general.
• 3:01
  Speaker 3: Caitlin Clark.
• 3:05
Speaker 4: Me personally, I think she she has done everything possible for.
• 3:12
  Speaker 3: Women's basketball.
• 3:14
Speaker 4: Now however you judge her, however, people judge her on
• 3:18
Speaker 4: being the best player or not. And I know the
• 3:23
Speaker 4: whole racial piece of it that that's that's in it.
• 3:27
Speaker 3: I'm not even interested in any.
• 3:28
Speaker 4: Part of of of that at all. But when you
• 3:35
  Speaker 4: see somebody like that, that's a that I would I
• 3:37
Speaker 4: would say, is like a pioneer in that sport.
• 3:40
Speaker 3: What what do you think? I mean?
• 3:42
Speaker 4: Is there any reflection of like can you see yourself
• 3:46
Speaker 4: in that space in doing that for women's boxing?
• 3:51
Speaker 6: Wow? Well, thank you, there's awesome. She she to me,
• 3:54
Speaker 6: is she's the person that that elevated the w n
• 3:58
Speaker 6: b A to to that next level.
• 3:59
  Speaker 2: Yes, And.
• 4:02
Speaker 6: You know, again, the racial thing really just.
• 4:05
Speaker 3: Sucks, to be honest, It does, does it does?
• 4:07
Speaker 6: She is a great player, she's a great marketer, but
• 4:11
Speaker 6: she is a great player and she just happens to
• 4:15
Speaker 6: be white. And I think too much is made of
• 4:18
Speaker 6: the race thing, honestly, But why other players that are
• 4:24
Speaker 6: in the WNBA right now or maybe have been can't
• 4:28
Speaker 6: understand where she's taking this league and support her. I
• 4:33
Speaker 6: have no clue because if she said today, I'm not
• 4:36
Speaker 6: playing basketball ever again, she's always going to be Caitlin Clark.
• 4:40
Speaker 6: She's always going to have achieved way more than any
• 4:43
Speaker 6: other female basketball player at this time, right and she's
• 4:46
Speaker 6: made a shit ton of money. Yeah, so she probably
• 4:49
Speaker 6: doesn't need to play basketball ever again. Where would the
• 4:52
Speaker 6: WNBA be Would it still be selling out arenas? Would
• 4:57
Speaker 6: they be getting this huge deal of TV?
• 5:00
  Speaker 4: Nope, Nope, I don't and I and I and I
• 5:03
Speaker 4: really don't. I really don't really understand, Like if that,
• 5:10
Speaker 4: if that's a person that I'm gonna go against, black, white, green, yellow, orange, whatever,
• 5:16
  Speaker 4: to me, that's a challenge and nothing else. There's there's
• 5:20
Speaker 4: nothing else in that. There's nothing else like, oh, well,
• 5:24
Speaker 4: they're pumping him up because he's not good or this
• 5:28
Speaker 4: or that. I don't think that you can get the
• 5:30
Speaker 4: kind of notoriety of those type of athletes without being
• 5:34
Speaker 4: that athlete, you know, like you can't, like you can't
• 5:37
Speaker 4: be Caitlyn Clark without being a great basketball player.
• 5:42
Speaker 3: I don't care what color you are. She didn't.
• 5:46
Speaker 4: There's nobody like just saying, oh, let's just elevate her,
• 5:48
Speaker 4: let's make her seem like she's great.
• 5:50
  Speaker 3: No, watch her.
• 5:52
Speaker 6: They ran big, this one white female that they want
• 5:57
Speaker 6: to be the face of the wig she has. I mean,
• 6:00
Speaker 6: she goes out there night after night, puts up crazy numbers,
• 6:04
Speaker 6: has herd team winning again. Why everybody's not on her bandwagon?
• 6:09
  Speaker 6: I don't know, But it doesn't mean because you're on
• 6:11
Speaker 6: her bandwagon, you don't want to kick her. But every
• 6:13
Speaker 6: time it's playing, or you don't want to store on her,
• 6:16
Speaker 6: you don't want to steal the ball, or you don't
• 6:17
Speaker 6: want to block her shot. Of course you should want
• 6:19
Speaker 6: to do all that. You should want to do that
• 6:20
Speaker 6: ten times more because it is her. I mean, it's
• 6:23
Speaker 6: the whole Larry Bird effect.
• 6:25
Speaker 3: Yes, yes, yes, yeah, I do.
• 6:28
Speaker 4: I do remember, and it is exactly I feel like
• 6:32
Speaker 4: it is exactly like that, And there was really not
• 6:36
Speaker 4: like I don't really the racial piece of it was
• 6:41
Speaker 4: simply because he was white and he was so good,
• 6:44
Speaker 4: you know, because I don't even think those players particularly
• 6:49
Speaker 4: care because you got white guys on your team, So
• 6:52
Speaker 4: how are you going to talk about the one that
• 6:54
  Speaker 4: you can't cover?
• 6:55
Speaker 3: You know that that can out shoot you.
• 6:59
  Speaker 4: And to me, I just think that it's it's it's
• 7:02
Speaker 4: jealousy of a skill set that somebody has put the
• 7:08
Speaker 4: time in to be so good. So they're as good
• 7:13
Speaker 4: as anybody's ever been. And now you're looking at them
• 7:16
Speaker 4: and they don't because they don't look a certain color
• 7:18
Speaker 4: to you, or because they're not the right that you
• 7:24
Speaker 4: don't like them for whatever the reason, I just don't
• 7:27
Speaker 4: think that you can do that. You have to see
• 7:30
Speaker 4: the greatness in it.
• 7:32
Speaker 6: Absolutely. If we want to take this back to boxing,
• 7:34
Speaker 6: and we can say, wow, Leila Ali came out. She's
• 7:38
Speaker 6: Muhammad Ali's daughter, she's black, She's getting all this notoriety,
• 7:41
Speaker 6: she's getting everything because she's Leila Ali. But guess what,
• 7:44
Speaker 6: Laila Ali went to the gym. She learned how to fight,
• 7:47
Speaker 6: and she kicked my butt. So, you know, she showed me.
• 7:50
Speaker 6: Even though I was sure that I could beat her.
• 7:52
Speaker 6: You know, I was old and she was young, and
• 7:54
Speaker 6: he was big. I have a ton of excuses, but
• 7:58
Speaker 6: she kicked my butt. She did, yeah, so I had to,
• 8:02
Speaker 6: whether I liked it or not, deal with give her bath.
• 8:05
Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, and.
• 8:07
Speaker 6: And to me it was like the at that particular
• 8:09
Speaker 6: fight was the changing of the guard, you know. Now Okay, Leila,
• 8:13
Speaker 6: now women's boxing is yours. You take it to that
• 8:16
Speaker 6: next level. Yeah, I think it kind of fell to
• 8:19
Speaker 6: the to the wayside, and now we have Amanda Serrano
• 8:22
Speaker 6: and Katie Taylor who are bringing women's boxing to that
• 8:25
  Speaker 6: next level.
• 8:26
Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, I'm gonna switch gears here, okay for a second,
• 8:29
Speaker 5: But so Christy, I'm gonna go back to April fifteenth,
• 8:32
Speaker 5: nineteen ninety six. Is that a significant date for you?
• 8:36
Speaker 6: I think so? Yes.
• 8:37
Speaker 5: Well, you made history as the first female boxer to
• 8:41
Speaker 5: grace the cover of Sports Illustrated, right.
• 8:43
Speaker 6: The only female boxer only ooh.
• 8:45
Speaker 5: Only thank you? Thank you well now, but not now,
• 8:48
Speaker 5: because thirty years later, you returned to the magazine Spotlight
• 8:51
Speaker 5: for the winter twenty twenty five issue with Sidney Sweeney. Correct, correct, Okay,
• 8:56
Speaker 5: what was that moment like for you coming full circle
• 8:58
  Speaker 5: with Sports Illustrated?
• 9:00
Speaker 6: It was It was a lot of fun. And the
• 9:01
Speaker 6: crazy fact I wore the same trunks, oh, same trunks
• 9:06
Speaker 6: from nineteen ninety six I wore in twenty twenty five.
• 9:09
  Speaker 5: That's that's a braggy point.
• 9:10
Speaker 6: You know, well you really want to know the truth.
• 9:13
Speaker 6: The waistband was dry rot, So whatever size I was,
• 9:19
Speaker 6: that is the truth. But it was really cool that,
• 9:21
Speaker 6: you know, I told them. They said, we're going to
• 9:23
Speaker 6: get this Sports Illustrated again as well. You guys, I
• 9:26
Speaker 6: actually had the same trunks and they're like, well, bring
• 9:29
Speaker 6: those trunks. We want you to have those coal coal.
• 9:32
Speaker 6: So that was awesome. So I am actually the only
• 9:34
Speaker 6: female boxer to ever be on the cover.
• 9:35
Speaker 5: Wow, I'm glad you never got it twice, Yes, twice.
• 9:39
Speaker 3: That that is special.
• 9:40
Speaker 4: I mean, that is that's that is something that like
• 9:43
Speaker 4: no one can take from you, no matter what exactly.
• 9:46
Speaker 6: But you know what, they don't buy magazines anymore, true people.
• 9:50
Speaker 6: You know, they look on online to see magazines. You'd say, oh,
• 9:52
Speaker 6: I was on the cover Sports Illustrated, which is a
• 9:54
Speaker 6: big deal to us.
• 9:55
  Speaker 5: Yeah yeah.
• 9:57
Speaker 6: These these kids today like, oh yeah, that's true. But yeah,
• 10:01
  Speaker 6: but I.
• 10:01
Speaker 5: Guess you could probably find it online, right, you could
• 10:03
  Speaker 5: find the cover.
• 10:04
Speaker 6: Oh yeah, you can actually buy the magazine. Yeah yeah.
• 10:08
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 10:08
Speaker 6: It's not as big as it was back in the nineties.
• 10:11
Speaker 6: It was a big deal in the nineties.
• 10:12
Speaker 3: What what is what is your outside of boxing?
• 10:15
Speaker 4: What what is your what is your favorite sport? What
• 10:19
Speaker 4: is your favorite sport and if it's if if not
• 10:23
Speaker 4: female sport, what is also your favorite female sport?
• 10:28
Speaker 6: My favorite thing to play.
• 10:30
Speaker 5: Or just to do or to watch to watch probably.
• 10:33
Speaker 6: Basketball, okay, you know basketball for sure. Yeah.
• 10:37
Speaker 4: And do you have any other sport that you play?
• 10:44
Speaker 6: I well, I really like to play racketball, okay, but
• 10:47
Speaker 6: I'm not good at it, but I like to play
• 10:49
Speaker 6: because I like to see hard I can hit the ball.
• 10:51
Speaker 6: I'm like, just hit it as hard as you can.
• 10:54
Speaker 6: And that's really not the smartest way to do it,
• 10:56
  Speaker 6: but that's what I like.
• 10:57
Speaker 3: Oh, Okay, I was just I was just scary.
• 11:00
Speaker 5: Doesn't surprise me with her boxing background that she wants
• 11:02
Speaker 5: to hit it as hard as she can, regardless of whether.
• 11:05
Speaker 3: It's work involved in that too.
• 11:08
Speaker 6: There, Yeah, there is. You have to you know, try
• 11:10
Speaker 6: to do the angles and you know, outsmart your opponent.
• 11:14
Speaker 4: When I talk about when I think about, tell me
• 11:17
Speaker 4: a little bit about or tell us a little bit about,
• 11:20
Speaker 4: like what was what was training and let's say for
• 11:24
Speaker 4: the biggest fight, the biggest fights that you had, what
• 11:28
Speaker 4: was the training, Like what was what was the routine?
• 11:31
Speaker 3: How early were you up? How how just the whole
• 11:34
Speaker 3: routine if you can tell us.
• 11:35
Speaker 6: So I would be up by six, do my roadwork,
• 11:38
Speaker 6: which would be like three and a half miles, and
• 11:41
Speaker 6: then I would do wind sprints. Some mornings, I wake
• 11:44
Speaker 6: up at four, I'm going to go run because I
• 11:46
Speaker 6: felt like I'm one upping my opponent. I'm at four,
• 11:49
Speaker 6: she's still sleep. So then then I would go to
• 11:53
Speaker 6: the gym and spar and then later in the evening
• 11:57
Speaker 6: I would go back and do a full circuit of workout,
• 12:00
Speaker 6: which would be shadow boxing, hand pads, hitting the heavy bag,
• 12:04
Speaker 6: jumping rope, speedbag, you know, just all the things that
• 12:07
Speaker 6: are in the gym. Do about twenty five rounds.
• 12:10
Speaker 4: I was gonna say how long how long would that
• 12:13
Speaker 4: particular that evening workout?
• 12:15
Speaker 3: Like how long would that take?
• 12:16
Speaker 6: Like about an hour and a half. You know, when
• 12:18
Speaker 6: these people tell you they're the gym for three and
• 12:20
  Speaker 6: four hours, I don't know what they're doing because there's
• 12:22
Speaker 6: no way you can hold that, you know, that intensity
• 12:26
Speaker 6: for three hours, There's just no way. So I don't
• 12:29
Speaker 6: know what they're doing. You know, maybe they're working at
• 12:31
Speaker 6: a very slow pace. I thought everything needed to happen fast.
• 12:36
Speaker 3: I'm with you on that.
• 12:37
Speaker 5: Breaks take breaks. Okay, Well, let's go back to your career,
• 12:41
Speaker 5: or actually back to twenty twenty two. You wrote a
• 12:44
Speaker 5: memoir titled Fighting for Survival and it documented your journey
• 12:49
Speaker 5: with abuse throughout your lifetime. And you also have a
• 12:52
Speaker 5: biography title Christy Martin, How the coal Miner's Daughter fought
• 12:55
Speaker 5: her way to boxing glory and changed women's sports forever.
• 12:58
Speaker 5: And that's pinned by r LS pen Is that right?
• 13:01
Speaker 6: So that's you know. I saw that on It's Amazon
• 13:04
Speaker 6: or one of those places. It is not me. The
• 13:07
Speaker 6: book part of it that I was a part of
• 13:10
Speaker 6: is was written by Ron Borgis and myself, and that
• 13:12
Speaker 6: is Fighting for Survival. Okay, but yeah, no, I saw
• 13:16
Speaker 6: like four other books. Wow, And I'm like, wow, where
• 13:19
Speaker 6: do they even get this information? Because no one talked
• 13:21
  Speaker 6: to me?
• 13:21
Speaker 3: Okay, but can somebody do that?
• 13:24
Speaker 6: Unfortunately I guess they can.
• 13:25
  Speaker 1: Wow they have.
• 13:27
  Speaker 5: Sorry I didn't I didn't realize that. But but your
• 13:31
Speaker 5: actually your memoir is that what the movie Christy was
• 13:33
Speaker 5: basically you know, following or was it more your personal stories? How?
• 13:38
Speaker 5: How did they develop the script for the movie.
• 13:41
Speaker 6: So let me say the book is real. If anyone
• 13:45
Speaker 6: reads the book by Ron Borgeous to myself, that's that
• 13:48
Speaker 6: is beginning to end. That's the real story. Okay, the
• 13:51
Speaker 6: movie it's just real, right, pretty much. But some of
• 13:56
Speaker 6: the people are combined, like you know, like they maybe
• 14:00
Speaker 6: take two or three people and make it into one person.
• 14:04
Speaker 6: Some of the situations, some of the experiences were a
• 14:06
Speaker 6: little out of order just to make it fit into
• 14:08
Speaker 6: the movie. But it's pretty close.
• 14:12
  Speaker 5: Okay.
• 14:12
Speaker 4: Yeah, How does it feel to even talk about the
• 14:17
Speaker 4: fact that you do Now at this point, you have
• 14:19
Speaker 4: a you have movies out there that are about your
• 14:24
  Speaker 4: life story?
• 14:24
Speaker 3: What is that? What does that feel like?
• 14:27
  Speaker 6: I am a coal miner's daughter from a little bitty
• 14:29
Speaker 6: town up in West Virginia. It's crazy. I mean, who,
• 14:35
Speaker 6: in their wildest dreams things a movie is going to
• 14:37
Speaker 6: be made about them. So I thought it was important though,
• 14:41
Speaker 6: to do the movie. And I hope that people it's
• 14:44
  Speaker 6: not a boxing movie, it's a life movie. And I
• 14:47
Speaker 6: hope that people don't miss the significance of the movie
• 14:51
Speaker 6: that it's about domestic violence, it's about sexuality, it's about
• 14:54
Speaker 6: you know, there's a little drug addiction in there that
• 14:56
Speaker 6: is overcoming, right, Like to me, I'm the ultimate and
• 15:00
Speaker 6: I and I kind of made it. So that's what
• 15:03
Speaker 6: I hope people take away from the movie that if
• 15:05
Speaker 6: she can do it, I can do it.
• 15:07
  Speaker 4: I wonder I wonder if if because I would I
• 15:11
Speaker 4: would say my situation not being like your situation. But
• 15:15
Speaker 4: I think most athletes, I think have have a drive,
• 15:21
Speaker 4: something motivates them, something create, something that has happened creates
• 15:25
Speaker 4: this drive for them. And I wonder, like if people
• 15:31
Speaker 4: really realize going through it, like let's say somebody I
• 15:36
Speaker 4: don't know, like say a college athlete who wants to
• 15:38
Speaker 4: play in the in the NFL, some of the things
• 15:40
Speaker 4: he or she may have gone through may be the
• 15:43
Speaker 4: thing that that it gives you the ride there, that
• 15:47
Speaker 4: that motivates you to get there. Do you remember Do
• 15:51
Speaker 4: you actually remember like why or how you got there,
• 15:55
Speaker 4: what motivated you to get there?
• 15:56
Speaker 3: Do you forget it?
• 15:57
Speaker 4: Because like for me, like the work that I put in,
• 16:01
  Speaker 4: you know, I didn't some of it I didn't have
• 16:03
Speaker 4: a choice, and most of it I would do on
• 16:06
  Speaker 4: my own.
• 16:07
Speaker 3: But I got used to doing it.
• 16:09
Speaker 4: I realized that, you know, somebody was pushing me, you know,
• 16:13
  Speaker 4: and I even when I didn't like it, when I
• 16:16
Speaker 4: look back at it, I'm like, man, if I don't
• 16:19
  Speaker 4: if I didn't have that, maybe I don't get there,
• 16:24
Speaker 4: you know. And I just wonder, like if people understand
• 16:28
Speaker 4: how how that outside motivation.
• 16:32
Speaker 3: Moves you to find success.
• 16:36
  Speaker 6: I think I was angry, but I don't think I
• 16:39
Speaker 6: ever realized why I was angry. Oh okay until after
• 16:42
Speaker 6: the fact, and really after being shot insteaded and you know,
• 16:46
Speaker 6: left four dead, then that's when I realized, Wow, I
• 16:49
Speaker 6: felt really angry, and it's no wonder I felt angry,
• 16:52
Speaker 6: you know that I started to really think back about Wow,
• 16:56
Speaker 6: you know, I was really pissed off of everybody. But
• 17:00
Speaker 6: it's no wonder because you know, I had this person.
• 17:02
Speaker 6: Every time something good would happen, he would tell me
• 17:05
Speaker 6: why it only happened because of something he had done,
• 17:09
Speaker 6: or it wasn't it wasn't anything to do with me,
• 17:12
Speaker 6: it was some other reason why it was good, or
• 17:15
Speaker 6: or I was never I was never good enough. So
• 17:18
Speaker 6: I think, you know, it was just angry. I was angry.
• 17:21
Speaker 6: So when as soon as I crossed through those ropes,
• 17:24
Speaker 6: it was a totally different person in there. I was
• 17:27
Speaker 6: just mad. I just wanted to hurt people. But I
• 17:30
  Speaker 6: loved it.
• 17:31
  Speaker 3: I don't know a lot.
• 17:32
Speaker 6: I mean I loved it. I loved my job, and
• 17:34
  Speaker 6: I love I wish, you know, I wish I wasn't
• 17:37
Speaker 6: fifty eight. I wish I was like thirty eight. I
• 17:39
Speaker 6: would still be doing it if I was fifty eight,
• 17:43
Speaker 6: but I had a stroke. If I had not a stroke,
• 17:44
Speaker 6: I was still probably be in there fighting. If they
• 17:46
Speaker 6: would license to me, I'd still be in there fighting.
• 17:48
Speaker 4: Wow, I see, yeah, see, I've had enough.
• 17:54
  Speaker 5: Well, I mean, I guess you're a little bit a
• 17:57
Speaker 5: little bit older than than Christy. Maybe that's your excuse,
• 18:01
Speaker 5: but so you know, you're speaking of your anger and
• 18:04
Speaker 5: how that motivates you, you know, with the domestic abuse.
• 18:08
Speaker 5: So that kind of also takes me to the next
• 18:11
Speaker 5: question or actually just a statement that I would like
• 18:13
Speaker 5: for you to discuss. You have a nonprofit called Christie's Champs,
• 18:18
Speaker 5: and it's really evolved over the years. Can you tell
• 18:21
Speaker 5: us about that organization?
• 18:23
Speaker 6: So, Christy's Champs. We founded Christie Champs in twenty fifteen,
• 18:28
Speaker 6: but really over just the last year. Kelly Dunbar, who's
• 18:33
Speaker 6: actually from here in Charleston has really come on board
• 18:35
Speaker 6: and she's the vice president now and really helping. We're
• 18:39
Speaker 6: going all over the country speaking. We're putting computers in
• 18:43
Speaker 6: domestic violence shelters. We're doing starting overbins for people that
• 18:48
Speaker 6: are getting ready to leave the shelter so they have
• 18:50
Speaker 6: something when they go to the apartment. We do gas cards,
• 18:56
Speaker 6: anything that we can do to help someone. We're doing
• 18:59
Speaker 6: to make it just a little bit easier for them
• 19:01
Speaker 6: to transition out and to be on their own.
• 19:05
Speaker 4: Is there is there anything that you feel like you
• 19:09
Speaker 4: truly want to do now that you haven't had a
• 19:15
Speaker 4: chance to Is it whether it's helping a calls or whatever,
• 19:20
Speaker 4: But is there something out there now that you're waiting
• 19:24
Speaker 4: to get the opportunity to do it?
• 19:27
Speaker 6: You know what? The truth? The truth is, I said,
• 19:30
Speaker 6: if I would win the lottery, that big one that's
• 19:32
Speaker 6: like seven hundred million, my now, I all would do
• 19:34
Speaker 6: is wake up every day and say to God, who
• 19:37
Speaker 6: can I help today? And that's what's important to me.
• 19:40
  Speaker 6: That's I've done everything for me, so why can't I
• 19:43
Speaker 6: just help somebody else every day? And that's really what
• 19:46
  Speaker 6: I'm trying to do now And Chrissy's Champs. That's that's
• 19:49
Speaker 6: what we do. We just try to help somebody every day,
• 19:52
Speaker 6: whether it's putting computers in there to start like I said,
• 19:56
Speaker 6: the starting overbins. Anyway, we're doing in October, we're doing
• 20:02
Speaker 6: a pet seminar because not every domestic violence shelter will
• 20:06
Speaker 6: allow people to bring their pets. It's a crazy statistic,
• 20:09
Speaker 6: but fifty of the people stay in a relationship, a
• 20:14
Speaker 6: domestic violence relationship because they cannot leave with their dogs
• 20:17
Speaker 6: or their cats, their pet.
• 20:18
  Speaker 5: I believe that.
• 20:19
Speaker 6: So you know, anybody that knows me knows Champ. So
• 20:23
Speaker 6: Champ is sponsoring a part of this pets. It's a
• 20:28
Speaker 6: it's a pet fundraiser for one of the shelters, Similal
• 20:32
Speaker 6: Safehouse down in Florida.
• 20:34
  Speaker 5: That's so amazing.
• 20:35
Speaker 6: Yeah, but you know it's it's great. It's great. We
• 20:39
Speaker 6: we work with the Way up in Raleigh County which
• 20:41
Speaker 6: services Roley County, Fayette, Nicholas Summers and we're that's where
• 20:47
Speaker 6: we're gonna do with the gas cards that we're going
• 20:49
Speaker 6: to raise awareness for Wednesday to to give get up
• 20:53
Speaker 6: with the gas cards because the ladies might need they
• 20:55
Speaker 6: need to go somewhere but they don't have gas. Well,
• 20:57
Speaker 6: they might need to go to a doctor's appointment, they
• 20:59
Speaker 6: might need to go to a job interview, they might
• 21:01
Speaker 6: need to go to a courterering. All you need is
• 21:05
Speaker 6: three three gallons of gas. So we're gonna make sure
• 21:07
  Speaker 6: they have gas.
• 21:08
Speaker 5: Now, I want to you just touched on that, Christy,
• 21:10
Speaker 5: and we'll go ahead and jump to that. I had
• 21:12
Speaker 5: it on my list of questions. But so you're going
• 21:15
Speaker 5: to be the headline on the fourth annual Women, Women
• 21:17
Speaker 5: Making a Difference Night at Gomart Park here in Charleston,
• 21:20
Speaker 5: which is going to be Wednesday. Of course, the podcast
• 21:22
Speaker 5: airs the day after, but we're live on Facebook so
• 21:26
Speaker 5: people can hear you right now. So everybody listen up.
• 21:29
Speaker 5: But you're actually you just you just talked about the
• 21:31
Speaker 5: gas cards. So what is your vision for that for
• 21:34
Speaker 5: that particular night in collecting some donations for a way.
• 21:39
Speaker 6: So people can come. They can bring a gas card
• 21:42
Speaker 6: Shell gas station and I'm not promoting Shell, but they
• 21:45
Speaker 6: specifically do a gas card just for gas. You can
• 21:49
Speaker 6: go to like Little General Circle K and get a
• 21:54
Speaker 6: gift card from that specific store, but they can use
• 21:58
Speaker 6: that for gas or food or anything else. But to
• 22:01
Speaker 6: get a specific gas card, you can go to Shell
• 22:04
Speaker 6: and we're gonna give that donation back to a way. Okay,
• 22:08
Speaker 6: and well we will do at least one thousand dollars,
• 22:11
Speaker 6: So that's forty twenty five dollars gift cards.
• 22:14
Speaker 5: Do you know what the acronym away stands for? Okay,
• 22:17
Speaker 5: I was wondering. I should have looked that up myself,
• 22:20
Speaker 5: but I thought, oh, Christy might know, so i'd ask you.
• 22:21
Speaker 5: But but it definitely is to benefit you know, the
• 22:24
Speaker 5: women that have left the shelter after domestic abuse situations.
• 22:28
Speaker 6: Correct, absolutely, and they're they're all about helping and the
• 22:32
Speaker 6: they have a safehouse. It's it's close to Roddy County.
• 22:37
Speaker 6: It's in Roddy County. I don't want to tell you where.
• 22:39
Speaker 3: It is, but it is.
• 22:40
Speaker 5: If it's a safe house, you probably shouldn't.
• 22:42
Speaker 3: And so are you all taking donations for.
• 22:48
Speaker 6: So we take the gas card itself if someone has that,
• 22:51
Speaker 6: or we can do donations. You can donate to Christy's
• 22:54
Speaker 6: Champs on through through cash app, through Venmo, basically anyway
• 23:01
Speaker 6: you have money, we can take it from you and
• 23:03
Speaker 6: take that money that will go to purchase the gift card.
• 23:06
Speaker 6: The gas cards for a way.
• 23:09
  Speaker 3: All right, well, I'll make a I'll make a donation.
• 23:11
Speaker 6: To it, thank you.
• 23:12
Speaker 4: Yeah, we'll try to figure out how to how to
• 23:15
Speaker 4: make that work, but I'll I'll definitely do that for you,
• 23:18
  Speaker 4: perfect thank you.
• 23:19
Speaker 5: Yes, yes, so tell us about Champ you're traveling Betty here.
• 23:23
Speaker 5: I would love to put him on on live Facebook.
• 23:28
Speaker 5: How does he do, Christy with all these different places
• 23:32
Speaker 5: and and and people that you you know, you see
• 23:34
Speaker 5: on a on a daily and weekly bait there he comes.
• 23:38
Speaker 5: How does he travel with you? Does he do? And
• 23:40
Speaker 5: he seems perfectly fine with us here? He so he
• 23:43
Speaker 5: seems like he's camp.
• 23:47
Speaker 6: Doesn't meet any strangers.
• 23:49
  Speaker 5: He went to.
• 23:51
Speaker 6: Which is the World Series this year?
• 23:54
  Speaker 7: What?
• 23:54
Speaker 6: Yes? He was a Game four in l A And
• 23:58
Speaker 6: he went to a NASCAR race in Phoenix.
• 24:01
Speaker 4: And he doesn't like like with all that noise, like
• 24:03
Speaker 4: it doesn't do anything. He just chills out like he's
• 24:06
  Speaker 4: doing with you.
• 24:07
Speaker 6: He's just chilling. He's been to fights in Madison Square Garden,
• 24:10
Speaker 6: He's been to fights in Vegas, like, yes.
• 24:15
Speaker 3: I'm just wondering what he's thinking.
• 24:17
Speaker 5: Maybe I could get adopted. I want to go to
• 24:18
Speaker 5: all those events with champs. Maybe Christy will adopt me.
• 24:21
  Speaker 3: I don't know.
• 24:23
Speaker 5: Oh my goodness, well you just brought that up, Christy.
• 24:25
Speaker 5: I'll go ahead and go there too. Christy Martin Productions
• 24:28
Speaker 5: is your your boxing promotion right, your your company and
• 24:33
Speaker 5: I was looking at your your website today and all
• 24:35
Speaker 5: your your roster. I mean it ranges from like featherweight
• 24:38
Speaker 5: fighters to even the heavyweight they all all classes. Tell
• 24:42
Speaker 5: us about Swain for you?
• 24:45
Speaker 6: Oh well, you know, boxing promotion is a tough business.
• 24:48
  Speaker 5: Oh, I'm sure.
• 24:48
Speaker 6: But where we have Victor Hernandez, who is a feather
• 24:52
Speaker 6: with that you're mentioned all that he's going to be
• 24:54
Speaker 6: fighting for a world title soon this this year actually.
• 24:57
Speaker 6: And then Kemon Evans, he's our cruise of weight. He
• 25:01
Speaker 6: just won a title up in New York. Yeah, we
• 25:05
Speaker 6: have Devin Parish, He's a kid from Chicago that just
• 25:09
Speaker 6: a hungry lion that wants to get it done. Yeah,
• 25:14
Speaker 6: we have everybody, like one hundred and fifteen pounder, a
• 25:17
Speaker 6: little bit of everybody. Sheldon Vallaton, who actually brought to Beckley,
• 25:20
Speaker 6: West Virginia for a fight just so I have one
• 25:23
Speaker 6: of my guys fighting in Beckley, and everybody loved him.
• 25:26
Speaker 6: They can't. He actually came up for the movie when
• 25:29
Speaker 6: we did the movie in Beckley, and yeah, my whole
• 25:32
Speaker 6: town of Malin's, West Virginia fell in love with him.
• 25:34
Speaker 4: How did you just get into like all like you've
• 25:38
Speaker 4: just spread it out just from the last time I
• 25:40
Speaker 4: think we talked, like You've just like all these new
• 25:43
  Speaker 4: things out there.
• 25:44
Speaker 3: How do you manage all of this stuff? I cried
• 25:48
  Speaker 3: and I.
• 25:48
Speaker 6: Talked to Champ a lot, and I'm like, please, I
• 25:51
Speaker 6: need a break. Honestly, I need a break. But you know,
• 25:55
Speaker 6: you got to keep on keeping on. You know, once
• 25:57
Speaker 6: you stop, you stop. So we just keep trying. And
• 26:01
Speaker 6: the boxing, the promotion is like, I don't know how
• 26:04
Speaker 6: awesome it was and how I felt to get the
• 26:07
Speaker 6: th and to win those titles. I want to be
• 26:10
Speaker 6: so I want to be part of somebody else's right.
• 26:12
Speaker 6: I want to help them get to that title fight.
• 26:15
Speaker 6: Get the fight you know it, Madison Square Garden, get
• 26:19
Speaker 6: the fight in Vegas. That's that's gonna be exciting for
• 26:22
Speaker 6: me to be part of somebody else's right.
• 26:24
Speaker 4: How are some of the how are how are some
• 26:27
Speaker 4: of the boxers that you come in contact the save
• 26:30
Speaker 4: for the first time to try to maybe get them
• 26:33
Speaker 4: to work with you, Like like what do they what
• 26:38
Speaker 4: do they say to you?
• 26:39
Speaker 3: Like what, like are they like, oh, you know, because.
• 26:41
Speaker 4: Because I mean you have I mean they know who
• 26:43
Speaker 4: you are, you know, and they know your history.
• 26:46
Speaker 3: Everybody knows your history.
• 26:47
Speaker 4: So like I can't I'm trying to figure out like
• 26:50
Speaker 4: how and what they say, how they what their reaction
• 26:54
Speaker 4: is when they see you.
• 26:56
Speaker 6: Most of the time, the guys that that that I've signed,
• 27:00
Speaker 6: they reach out to me, like they kind of reach
• 27:02
Speaker 6: out to me, like I would like to be one
• 27:03
Speaker 6: of your fighters. And so I go and watch them,
• 27:06
Speaker 6: and what is most important to me is who they
• 27:10
Speaker 6: are as a person.
• 27:11
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 27:12
  Speaker 6: I have a kid that's really not a good fighter,
• 27:15
Speaker 6: but he's a great, great human being. So I'm like,
• 27:19
Speaker 6: this kid needs an opportunity because maybe he'll develop into
• 27:23
Speaker 6: a better fighter, but he's a good person. So let
• 27:25
Speaker 6: me see if I can help him. And boxing can
• 27:29
Speaker 6: open up so many doors. It doesn't you don't have
• 27:31
Speaker 6: to be a world champion, but you can use boxing
• 27:34
Speaker 6: to get you to maybe you're going to be a
• 27:36
Speaker 6: great businessman in your town, you know. But boxing can
• 27:39
Speaker 6: make people become more familiar with you and see you
• 27:42
Speaker 6: as a person and then they'll fall in love with
• 27:44
Speaker 6: you and the next thing you know, you're selling real estate.
• 27:47
Speaker 4: See that's that's interesting that you say that, because like
• 27:50
  Speaker 4: I can't. Like I'm thinking if I was, if I
• 27:55
Speaker 4: was working with you to try to become a boxer,
• 27:57
Speaker 4: Like I'm thinking, like, in my mind, that's it. You know,
• 28:01
Speaker 4: I got if this doesn't work, But you know I don't.
• 28:04
Speaker 4: I don't want anything else. This is I got to
• 28:06
  Speaker 4: focus here.
• 28:07
Speaker 6: But that's how they think. But I'm a little smarter
• 28:10
Speaker 6: because I'm older and I've right, I've been through all
• 28:12
Speaker 6: this before, so I know that you really don't have
• 28:16
Speaker 6: the talent to become a world champion, even though that's
• 28:19
Speaker 6: what they they hope and that's their goal. What I'm thinking,
• 28:23
Speaker 6: I'm still thinking, we're going to use boxing, let you
• 28:26
Speaker 6: grow as a human being and open up other doors
• 28:30
Speaker 6: for you. I mean, and maybe he gets a home running. No,
• 28:35
Speaker 6: maybe I'm the champion. I'll be happy, you know, be happy.
• 28:38
Speaker 5: You're kind of there Don King as Don King was
• 28:40
Speaker 5: for you. Right. Well, in a way, I'm going to
• 28:45
Speaker 5: tell us about your relationship with Don. I know you've
• 28:47
Speaker 5: probably talked about him before on our podcast, but I
• 28:50
Speaker 5: never get tired of hearing Don King stories.
• 28:52
Speaker 6: So Don King, don King, Well, you know, he's let's see,
• 28:55
Speaker 6: I think he's not. He'll be ninety four August twenty something.
• 29:01
Speaker 5: You still have a relationships.
• 29:02
Speaker 6: I still talk to him every every like once a month.
• 29:06
Speaker 6: He does fights every now and then, so I commentate
• 29:09
Speaker 6: for his fights. Hepe, we make matches. Sometimes. It's a
• 29:13
Speaker 6: different relationship now because obviously, as a fighter, you're just
• 29:16
Speaker 6: oh my god, oh my god, he's Don King. But
• 29:18
Speaker 6: now I'm older and wiser, and yeah, he's still don King,
• 29:23
Speaker 6: and trust me, I still approach him like he's done King.
• 29:25
Speaker 6: But yeah, I'm not gonna fall for those things. Yes,
• 29:30
Speaker 6: you know, I'm like, no, dude, you gotta pay me
• 29:33
Speaker 6: for the he can.
• 29:37
Speaker 4: So he he is still.
• 29:39
Speaker 3: Pretty much the don King that most people know.
• 29:43
Speaker 6: He you know, he this is old thing with Don King.
• 29:47
Speaker 6: He was that don King that was in front of
• 29:49
Speaker 6: the microphone or in front of the camera, and then
• 29:51
Speaker 6: he was the don King that was behind closed doors.
• 29:54
Speaker 6: And that Don King wasn't funny and he wasn't doing
• 29:57
Speaker 6: that big laugh at those big smiles. He was all business.
• 30:02
Speaker 6: So yeah, it's definitely to two don kings hmmm.
• 30:07
Speaker 5: Which obviously you kept the real I mean you you
• 30:09
Speaker 5: must have a mutual kind of like respect or at
• 30:13
Speaker 5: least a friendship to keep the relationship going this long
• 30:16
  Speaker 5: to a degree.
• 30:17
Speaker 6: Yeah. I mean, if I needed something really bad, you know,
• 30:21
Speaker 6: call him and say, you know, d Canny can help here.
• 30:24
Speaker 6: He actually has a champion that is a cruiseweight champion
• 30:27
Speaker 6: WBC cruiseweight champion Nicole Nick what's his name, Noel mcalean,
• 30:32
Speaker 6: And I have a cruiserweight that is also a champion,
• 30:35
Speaker 6: but not a world champion. So I tried really hard
• 30:38
Speaker 6: to get him to fight my champion. But my champion
• 30:41
Speaker 6: was gonna win, and he said no, he wasn't about to.
• 30:45
Speaker 3: Is that because he assumed that he wasn't he couldn't win?
• 30:48
Speaker 6: Well, I think he knew he couldn't win, and then
• 30:50
Speaker 6: there wasn't it wasn't gonna generate enough money. I mean,
• 30:53
Speaker 6: you know, DK is still about the dollar, of course,
• 30:56
  Speaker 6: I mean it's business.
• 30:58
  Speaker 3: So how how.
• 31:01
Speaker 4: Are you in any role like that to have like
• 31:04
Speaker 4: to to create the fight, to promote the fight, the
• 31:09
Speaker 4: money in the fight. Is that kind of have you
• 31:11
Speaker 4: gotten into that space yet or or and or are
• 31:15
Speaker 4: you interested in that spot?
• 31:16
Speaker 6: Of course I would like to get bigger promotion opportunities.
• 31:19
Speaker 6: I just did a show up in upstate New York
• 31:22
Speaker 6: to Turning Stone Casino. Money was a little better, but
• 31:25
Speaker 6: you know, without a TV deal, and that's what you know,
• 31:28
Speaker 6: like Oscar de la Hoya Golden Boys, those guys, they
• 31:30
Speaker 6: don't have TV deals, so they're not ever using their
• 31:32
Speaker 6: own money. I had to use my own money to
• 31:34
Speaker 6: make these fights happen. So yeah, I just I'm not
• 31:38
Speaker 6: to that level. And I don't, you know what the
• 31:40
Speaker 6: very truth is, I don't. My heart so much doesn't
• 31:44
Speaker 6: want to go there. My big interest is Christy's Champs.
• 31:47
Speaker 6: And that's what I really want to do is I
• 31:49
Speaker 6: want to help everybody. But I really want to help
• 31:52
Speaker 6: these these these people that are in the besket viollanced situations.
• 31:54
Speaker 6: I want to help them get out. I want to
• 31:57
Speaker 6: help them once they've gotten out, I want to help
• 31:58
Speaker 6: them get into that next space in life. That's what
• 32:02
Speaker 6: I think is important. And I did make a deal
• 32:05
Speaker 6: with God for my hospital bed that if you'll let
• 32:08
Speaker 6: me live, I'll help as many people as I can,
• 32:10
Speaker 6: and that I need to fulfill that.
• 32:13
  Speaker 3: I understand. I understand, So.
• 32:17
Speaker 5: You do also listen to this Carl so you're you
• 32:19
Speaker 5: were just you know, singing her praises. She also does
• 32:22
Speaker 5: motivational speaking, right, so we we She has a website.
• 32:27
Speaker 5: I think Christy Martin dot net. Is that correct?
• 32:30
Speaker 6: It's Christy Martin. No, it's Christie's Champs dot org.
• 32:33
Speaker 5: Okay, so that's not a separate it is website.
• 32:36
Speaker 6: Christi Champanels dot org is really where you can get
• 32:39
Speaker 6: me for the for speaking, Christy Martin dot net. It's
• 32:44
Speaker 6: just not as up to date. We got the Christie's
• 32:47
Speaker 6: Champs dot the one. Yes, yes, but we like to
• 32:50
Speaker 6: go and like I said, you know, I'm speaking hospitals,
• 32:55
Speaker 6: Jills of course, galas that are like the Bestic Bones
• 32:59
Speaker 6: uh sponsored, but any place that somebody let me talk
• 33:04
Speaker 6: about domestic violence because I always say that if you
• 33:07
Speaker 6: talk about something enough that people get tired of hearing
• 33:09
Speaker 6: about it, they'll make a change. So I'm gonna keep
• 33:12
Speaker 6: talking about it until people start making a change.
• 33:15
Speaker 3: Do you think that caused your boxing?
• 33:27
Speaker 4: I won't say skill set, but the but the aggressiveness
• 33:31
Speaker 4: in your boxing. Do you think that that was caused
• 33:35
Speaker 4: by you know, your your personal situation.
• 33:39
Speaker 6: Looking back, Yes, I think it played a factor into it.
• 33:43
Speaker 6: I think there was more than that. I think a
• 33:45
Speaker 6: little bit of it is just who I am. I'm
• 33:47
Speaker 6: an athlete that wants to be the best, like highly
• 33:51
Speaker 6: motivated to be the best athlete as you know. Yeah so,
• 33:58
Speaker 6: but I think because Jim Martin, like ah, you know,
• 34:01
Speaker 6: it was always pressing the pressing the buttons, pressing the buttons,
• 34:04
Speaker 6: it just added to that already I got to be
• 34:07
Speaker 6: the best. I gotta be the best. But as hard
• 34:10
Speaker 6: as I worked to be the best, and he would
• 34:12
Speaker 6: always bring me down. So it was like that struggle,
• 34:16
Speaker 6: constant struggle of trying to achieve and then get let down.
• 34:22
Speaker 4: I was I was talking to a buddy of mine
• 34:25
Speaker 4: and we were talking about coaching from you know, quote
• 34:29
Speaker 4: back in the day when you would say you wanted
• 34:32
Speaker 4: to be this or that, coaches, coaches would really come
• 34:38
Speaker 4: at you if you were talking. You know, I was
• 34:41
Speaker 4: talking about going pro since I was like seven years old,
• 34:44
Speaker 4: and I'm saying it out loud to whoever is going
• 34:47
Speaker 4: to listen. And my thing was, I felt like saying
• 34:54
Speaker 4: it out loud for me made it even better for
• 34:58
Speaker 4: me to because now if I tell you I'm gonna
• 35:00
Speaker 4: do it. You're gonna doubt me. That only is going
• 35:04
Speaker 4: to motivate me more to to get out.
• 35:08
Speaker 6: I'm going to show you.
• 35:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm gonna show you back and watch so so
• 35:12
Speaker 3: so I know we just got a few minutes.
• 35:14
Speaker 4: So when you going into the ring and somebody has
• 35:17
Speaker 4: already done a whole lot of talking, is that what
• 35:20
Speaker 4: you would take in the ring? And and and how
• 35:24
Speaker 4: how deep does that get? Would that get to you?
• 35:28
Speaker 6: So? I like I was the talker. I was like
• 35:32
Speaker 6: you absolutely, I loved it. I was like, I loved
• 35:36
Speaker 6: that part. But what does.
• 35:39
  Speaker 3: No?
• 35:40
Speaker 6: Yes, yes, yes, but I would I would get I
• 35:43
Speaker 6: would try to get you so mad at me, like
• 35:47
Speaker 6: you want to kill me, right, because you're gonna make
• 35:49
Speaker 6: a mistake. When you lose your focus, you lose your control,
• 35:53
Speaker 6: you become angry. No, you can't fight angry, not really right.
• 35:58
Speaker 6: You have to be in control. Oh but I'm gonna
• 36:01
Speaker 6: make you so mad. You're gonna make mistakes. And so
• 36:04
Speaker 6: that's what I love to do. Oh my goodness, I
• 36:06
  Speaker 6: love this.
• 36:09
  Speaker 3: Well.
• 36:10
Speaker 4: We appreciate you coming back, and you got an open

Speaker 2: Carl Lee. Now back to the conversation.
• 37:19
Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we took a quick break
• 37:23
Speaker 4: and h let Christy get out of here.
• 37:27
Speaker 3: She had some other things to have to do.
• 37:31
Speaker 4: I think when she just just before we go anywhere else,
• 37:35
Speaker 4: I just want to say, like, I feel like she
• 37:37
Speaker 4: is just so comfortable here and she enjoys it, and
• 37:43
Speaker 4: like she just gives us some information like it's it's
• 37:46
  Speaker 4: so easy.
• 37:48
  Speaker 5: She's just so's She's a pure joy to sit down
• 37:51
Speaker 5: and just have a conversation with her.
• 37:53
Speaker 3: She smiling the whole she smiles.
• 37:55
Speaker 5: She smiles the whole time she tells you. You can
• 37:58
Speaker 5: tell she's very authentic. The stories that she tells you
• 38:01
Speaker 5: come from her heart. Her work comes from her heart.
• 38:05
  Speaker 5: I just think she's a truly special human that we're
• 38:09
Speaker 5: all blessed to have walking the earth with us. At
• 38:12
Speaker 5: the same time, can you do you see her in
• 38:16
Speaker 5: the ring? No, Like I cannot.
• 38:19
Speaker 3: I keep I keep trying to see, you know.
• 38:23
Speaker 4: I saw the movie and all that, and I'm and
• 38:25
Speaker 4: I'm she's been here what three times?
• 38:28
  Speaker 3: Two times?
• 38:28
Speaker 5: Now? Well this is her second time, but we've been
• 38:31
Speaker 5: in contact with her quite a bit.
• 38:33
Speaker 4: Yes, So so when I when I look at her,
• 38:36
Speaker 4: like I'm like thinking, like where where is that anger
• 38:38
Speaker 4: at Like where did where does she dig that anger
• 38:41
Speaker 4: up from? Because she's just as happy. And then with
• 38:45
Speaker 4: the dog with can't like she's walking with Champ.
• 38:50
Speaker 5: Just like he just like lays back and lets mom
• 38:53
Speaker 5: do you know whatever Mom needs to do. So he's
• 38:55
Speaker 5: he's a pretty pretty chill dog. But you know, I
• 38:58
Speaker 5: was thinking back to Carl back. I think it was
• 39:00
Speaker 5: in January when they did the proclamation for Christy Martin
• 39:04
Speaker 5: at the Capital, and you know how how special that
• 39:08
Speaker 5: was that we were able to go and be a
• 39:10
Speaker 5: part of that ceremony and see her being honored and
• 39:15
Speaker 5: a very deserving honor. In my opinion, I'm just kind
• 39:19
Speaker 5: of glad. You know, we've become friends and it's just
• 39:22
Speaker 5: really cool because you know, I feel like she can
• 39:26
Speaker 5: reach out to us and say, hey, I'm going to
• 39:28
Speaker 5: be in town and I'd love to be on your
• 39:29
Speaker 5: podcast again. And I feel like too, if we needed
• 39:33
Speaker 5: her to do something special for us, she would do
• 39:36
Speaker 5: the same. Just that type of type of person. But
• 39:40
Speaker 5: you know, I thought it was interesting too, and I'll
• 39:43
Speaker 5: let you comment on it. But when she said she
• 39:46
Speaker 5: was the trash talker like you've talked about, like Sterling
• 39:50
Speaker 5: shark being the trash talker in your league. And then
• 39:53
Speaker 5: and to see her and say that, I just can't imagine,
• 39:57
Speaker 5: you know, like you said. But still it's strategic, right,
• 40:02
  Speaker 5: it's strategic.
• 40:03
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 40:04
Speaker 4: And if you look at the two this is this
• 40:07
Speaker 4: is gonna sound crazy, but if you look at the
• 40:08
Speaker 4: two personalities, there's someone alike.
• 40:13
Speaker 3: Now that you said, yes, there's someone alike.
• 40:15
Speaker 8: When they're sitting in here, you know, it's all it's
• 40:18
Speaker 8: all funny games, it's smiling. They're just happy to be
• 40:21
Speaker 8: They they call you to let you know they're here,
• 40:24
Speaker 8: so they you know, they'll come on.
• 40:26
Speaker 3: You don't have to invite them, they can invite themselves.
• 40:29
Speaker 4: And and she comes across just kind of like just
• 40:33
Speaker 4: like and with the same type of confidence.
• 40:36
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you know, the.
• 40:37
Speaker 4: Same type of confidence that that doesn't come across negative.
• 40:41
Speaker 5: No, No, I don't feel like she's got that type
• 40:46
Speaker 5: of attitude. I think she's the type of person that
• 40:49
Speaker 5: just rolls with the punches. Literally, that's kind of neat
• 40:54
Speaker 5: that I says that. But I feel like she she
• 40:58
Speaker 5: looks at obstacles in her life and just says, hey,
• 41:01
Speaker 5: you know, either we're going to overcome these or we're gonna,
• 41:04
Speaker 5: you know, find a way around them. And she's through
• 41:07
Speaker 5: it or go through it, Yeah, definitely. And and she's
• 41:11
Speaker 5: very goal oriented and she's very passionate about her work
• 41:14
Speaker 5: for domestic abuse victims.
• 41:17
Speaker 4: It's it's it's amazing to to to think of, you know,
• 41:24
Speaker 4: that life for her when you see her now, you know,
• 41:29
Speaker 4: because again, like I said, she's sitting in the chair
• 41:31
Speaker 4: and she's looking she's smiling, she's laughing like life is
• 41:34
Speaker 4: is is great, and she's you know, I'm sure there
• 41:39
Speaker 4: are memories of some sort, but it looks to me
• 41:43
Speaker 4: from the outside, clearly from the outside, that life is
• 41:48
Speaker 4: just great for her, like she like she has she
• 41:52
Speaker 4: has found herself in a space that.
• 41:54
Speaker 3: Is so comfortable and so beneficial for her.
• 42:00
Speaker 5: Mm hmm. Yeah. I mean, I think her perspective probably
• 42:04
Speaker 5: as as of anybody that goes through a traumatic event,
• 42:08
Speaker 5: you know, and this one is to the extreme of trauma. Yes,
• 42:13
Speaker 5: it makes you have a deeper appreciation for your life
• 42:16
Speaker 5: and kind of streamlines, Hey, this is what I want
• 42:19
Speaker 5: to do with my life, you know, this is this
• 42:21
Speaker 5: is the kind of the path I want to to,
• 42:23
Speaker 5: you know, to follow. Because they were so close to
• 42:27
Speaker 5: a near death experience. Does that make sense?
• 42:29
  Speaker 3: Yep, yep, yep.
• 42:31
Speaker 4: And and again you think of all that, But yet
• 42:38
Speaker 4: when when she walks through the doors she sits in the.
• 42:41
Speaker 3: Chair, it leaves like.
• 42:45
Speaker 4: It's like she becomes just some just this happy, go
• 42:50
Speaker 4: lucky person who but.
• 42:53
Speaker 5: Don't let that. I would not want to cross her
• 42:56
Speaker 5: at all. I mean, like she said she would if
• 42:58
Speaker 5: she could, she would, she would still be in that
• 43:01
  Speaker 5: ring fighting someone.
• 43:03
Speaker 3: And and and you can, you can, actually you can.
• 43:08
Speaker 4: You can actually see that side of her sometimes when
• 43:12
Speaker 4: she when she's talking about it. But then there's that
• 43:16
Speaker 4: for me, I keep getting I get the constant, like
• 43:19
Speaker 4: laughing and fun side of her, and I just can't
• 43:24
Speaker 4: I just like I said, I see it.
• 43:27
Speaker 3: I can hear it in her voice. I just like,
• 43:30
Speaker 3: how does she get there? Like what, you know, how does.
• 43:33
Speaker 5: She get considering what she went through? You know, like
• 43:37
Speaker 5: I said, I feel like that's what she she made
• 43:39
Speaker 5: you that, Yeah, and she said she she made a
• 43:41
Speaker 5: deal with God, you know, when she was laying in
• 43:44
Speaker 5: that hospital and you know knew that, you know, she
• 43:46
Speaker 5: had almost lost her life to this, to this man,
• 43:50
Speaker 5: and you know she she made the best of her
• 43:54
Speaker 5: life after that she wanted to make sure that other
• 43:56
Speaker 5: women have the opportunity to get out of those situations
• 43:59
  Speaker 5: if possible.
• 44:01
Speaker 3: She she's to me just an amazing human being.
• 44:06
Speaker 5: And talented. I mean, not only is she athletically talented,
• 44:10
Speaker 5: all these other you know avenues, she's going down with
• 44:14
Speaker 5: Christy Martin productions, with her boxing, you know, career, and
• 44:18
Speaker 5: then motivational speaking, and just just so many things going
• 44:22
Speaker 5: on in her life. She she she makes me tired.
• 44:25
  Speaker 4: I guess, I guess it's it's it's her way of
• 44:29
Speaker 4: giving back and doing what she thinks is right and
• 44:33
Speaker 4: what is helpful for the people that she's.
• 44:36
  Speaker 3: Around, and and.
• 44:38
Speaker 4: A country, a state, wherever, whatever level she's going to
• 44:42
Speaker 4: take it to. I just think that she just feels
• 44:45
Speaker 4: that this is something that she needs.
• 44:48
Speaker 3: To do for her because she's been through it.
• 44:54
Speaker 4: She's had all of her success, and now she wants
• 44:58
Speaker 4: to make sure there are other people that people who
• 45:01
Speaker 4: are are struggling now, women that are struggling now in
• 45:05
Speaker 4: situations that are uncomfortable, unbearable. She wants to she wants
• 45:13
Speaker 4: to step in and and and win.
• 45:15
Speaker 5: Those battles absolutely, And she's also deeply, deeply devoted to
• 45:20
Speaker 5: her family, her her town, you know, her state. I
• 45:25
Speaker 5: feel like she's just a true West Virginian that we
• 45:28
Speaker 5: should all, you know, be honored and to know and
• 45:31
  Speaker 5: proud of.
• 45:32
Speaker 4: Yeah, I would, I would. I just think that she
• 45:36
Speaker 4: just needs more. I think we, the state of West Virginia.
• 45:39
Speaker 3: Needs to do more.
• 45:41
Speaker 5: I agree with that statement.
• 45:42
Speaker 3: I just think that she, along with a lot of our.
• 45:45
Speaker 5: Professional athletes that have you know, left here and made
• 45:48
Speaker 5: a name for themselves and made our state proud.
• 45:50
Speaker 4: I think and and if that were to happen, I
• 45:53
Speaker 4: think that would bring those athletes back too, to be
• 45:59
Speaker 4: here and so people know their names, know what they
• 46:05
Speaker 4: look like, get a chance to shake their hand, have
• 46:08
Speaker 4: a conversation with them. When you when when when West
• 46:13
Speaker 4: Virginia athletes don't come back and have success, it doesn't
• 46:20
Speaker 4: help the kids that are coming through the same sport,
• 46:24
Speaker 4: the same right, uh, academic class or whatever. You need
• 46:31
Speaker 4: somebody to to be able to say, hey, you can
• 46:34
Speaker 4: do this. You know, you just have to keep on
• 46:38
Speaker 4: this path. That's all just but but we just won't
• 46:43
Speaker 4: for whatever reason, we just don't. We don't promote those people.
• 46:48
Speaker 5: And let's think about the realistically, how many women in
• 46:53
Speaker 5: athletics from West Virginia in any sport have made it
• 46:58
Speaker 5: to the professional level, like Christie did. I mean, there's
• 47:01
Speaker 5: not a whole lot of them anyway, So what a
• 47:03
Speaker 5: role model. And when we do have a lot of men,
• 47:06
Speaker 5: you know, males that are out there, not a lot,
• 47:09
