- 0:48Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast with my partner
- 0:52in crime. Brian Sigler, I am Curtis
- 0:54Wilson. Brian how are you today?
- 0:56My friend, there is football on the television.
- 1:01I am doing wonderful. There is multiple football on
- 1:04the television body. Multiple.
- 1:08You send me a picture, what you got going on there?
- 1:11All right, so we're recording the podcast.
- 1:13I've got my desktop. I've got my note, see, I've got
- 1:17You coming through here, got a laptop to my right.
- 1:22Miami UAB got the television above, my head Chiefs Texans.
- 1:28I'm gonna probably be flipping back and forth the Lakers
- 1:31Rockets. I'm probably gonna be flipping
- 1:32back and forth to see how the Braves game maybe ends up here.
- 1:37I'm not sure if that's come to conclusion at this point or not.
- 1:40So it's a good night but you buddy you got full Command
- 1:44Center style there man, love it and same on this.
- 1:47And brother I got I got the Red Sox game on.
- 1:51I got the UAB Miami game on. I got the cheese and Texans on
- 1:55Travis Kelce, just scored a touchdown.
- 1:57I want on them anywhere. I don't know if you do or not.
- 2:05I got you right to get someone that has my home.
- 2:08So I'd like to see less of that, the rest of the money but we all
- 2:11right. Exactly.
- 2:15Got you right here in front of me on Skype.
- 2:17Got the whole podcast stuff here.
- 2:20Ready to go man been a while. But after last weekend we had
- 2:26football, you were down at the beach so we were like let's just
- 2:29wait till Thursday be a fun night to record.
- 2:34Catch any games last weekend while you were down at the beach
- 2:36or are you strictly Beach mode strictly Beach Boat?
- 2:40I was ironically watching The Wicked Tuna Outer Banks while at
- 2:46the Outer Banks So I was doing some meta situation there, but
- 2:53that was, that was fun. Strictly Beach, though, we
- 2:55didn't really catch many games. I was falling along a few things
- 3:00while I was there on my phone, but wasn't watching much.
- 3:04We were, we were with some of our neighbors at a, at a house
- 3:08there in the Outer Banks. So kind of let them, you know,
- 3:12be the be the guide of what was on the television for the most
- 3:16part. So how about you, buddy?
- 3:19You catch anything card plum called caught the army game,
- 3:24where they just ran like crazy. It was sort of insane, just
- 3:28watching a triple option offense, cost them the game
- 3:32Monday night where Hey, listen. It matters.
- 3:36If you tackle in practice, maybe look like shit and normally
- 3:44service Academy Schools regardless who they play, they
- 3:46don't look like shit. They look fundamentally sound.
- 3:50If nothing else they look terrible.
- 3:53And of course, it comes out the day after they had been tackling
- 3:56and immediately. Yeah, we got to start tackling
- 3:58in practice. So I don't know if you caught it
- 4:02but you catch the video that came.
- 4:05I'm out from hokey football that showed a lot of the defensive
- 4:09highlights from practice. Showed a lot of tackling drills.
- 4:13Yeah like seeing that especially after you know what happened
- 4:17when you didn't tackle but yeah but it's funny.
- 4:21Those two teams BYU and army playing a couple weeks.
- 4:25So it's going to be interesting because they both looked
- 4:27absolutely dominant in their games.
- 4:33I don't think and called a couple game Saturday night but I
- 4:37really wasn't paying attention here and there and then so yeah,
- 4:43but uh, let's get to it. We got a lot of stuff to go
- 4:45through. Then compressors been some news
- 4:48to release. Let's start with the biggie man.
- 4:51And this makes you a happy camper advice heard by now.
- 4:55It's official. It's official.
- 4:57Raheem Blackshear is eligible. Find it now we're about to go
- 5:04ham because again I've been saying it since he announced
- 5:09that he was committing to Virginia Tech.
- 5:11This guy could be a problem on the offensive side of the ball
- 5:16and everything that's coming out of Camp backs.
- 5:18That up, everything that coach Foo is said everything that the
- 5:22quarterbacks have said has backed that up.
- 5:24This guy's going to be a weapon, he's going to be a tool.
- 5:26He's gonna do a lot of different things.
- 5:30You know the biggest thing is that he does A lot of things
- 5:33really, damn good. Yeah, so you can you just can
- 5:35deploy him in so many different ways and he, you know, it's
- 5:38almost impossible to prepare for a player like that because, you
- 5:43know, you can line him up everywhere, you can't just say,
- 5:45alright, well we'll roll the oral the defense towards him or
- 5:49roll this one player towards. So now he's going to be in the
- 5:52backfield, he's going to be in the slot.
- 5:53He might split out wide. I mean there's just so many
- 5:56different ways and different things you can do with me.
- 5:58Run jet suites with them everything.
- 6:00Yeah, everything it. Really open to hear some of the
- 6:03stuff that he talked about to especially you know.
- 6:07You hear him and food when he's got the news like, like food
- 6:11walked up. Doing basically said you better
- 6:13be ready to play and that was basically any talked about
- 6:17talking with Brock. A lot about the transfer
- 6:19situation. Brought really tell him stay
- 6:21positive but you mentioned it and it's been said and it's been
- 6:25seen the guys unique he can go everywhere.
- 6:28We're going to probably touch a little more later on especially
- 6:31with the why. Receiver groups, some news on
- 6:34there but it's a great thing. It's a great thing because now,
- 6:40That missing you feel like the missing piece?
- 6:42If there was ever a player Built For This offense it's him you
- 6:46get him on the field and you know it sounds like a win.
- 6:52It feels like all these years, we had lost in the portal and we
- 6:56lost in the portal and we finally won one and when you win
- 7:00it the caliber of player you're getting is a huge win.
- 7:04It's not like you're getting a very solid probably going to be
- 7:07a contributor. You're getting a guy that's
- 7:09going to be on the field. Every Map.
- 7:11Yep. Oh well lo and behold Saturday
- 7:16while you were at the beach I blow you up because out of
- 7:21nowhere freaking field. Jack hollifield commits to
- 7:26Virginia Tech. The three-star little brother of
- 7:32the linebacker Dax hollifield the midst, looking at him as a
- 7:37tight end, you know, had some pretty good.
- 7:40It offers, you know, you kind of look here, you know, Michigan
- 7:45Maryland, you know, NC State and North Carolina, Tennessee, good
- 7:51offer list. He plays linebacker in high
- 7:53school. Now, Brian have you looked at
- 7:55his tape and tried to make this a what he does and his build of
- 7:59what you going to do with the tight end, because it appears
- 8:01that's where we're taking it. Yeah, it looks like he's going
- 8:05to be tight end for us and probably going to be almost like
- 8:10a Dalton Keen type player for us.
- 8:12I would imagine with this skill set is size and the speed that
- 8:16that's what I would project him doing is kind of more of a h.h.
- 8:20bad guy that can lead out, but also a guy that could Block in
- 8:23line as well and you know has some of the athletic tools to do
- 8:28some damage in the screen game and in the short passing game.
- 8:32So I look for him to do stuff. Like that I three-star rating
- 8:36guy on 24/7, they still rate him as an inside linebacker there
- 8:40which is odd, considering they actually have his his projected
- 8:45position as tight in. So I'm not sure how that rating
- 8:50is helping or hurting us at this point.
- 8:52I don't know if you would be rated higher if he was being
- 8:55rated as a tight end, or if that is just reflective of what they
- 8:58think he is across the board. So it's interesting there that
- 9:02he's not either. Rated as an athlete or as a
- 9:05tight end, he's ready to his position that he more than
- 9:07likely will not play at the division one level.
- 9:10So that's interesting. But I mean, it's a great.
- 9:13Get we've said it before, Brothers play at Virginia Tech.
- 9:17Here's another one. So you know, it's a good get in.
- 9:21Like I said, nice to keep the family thing going for us.
- 9:25Absolutely. And with this commitment on
- 9:27helps Hokies helps the Hokies in the rankings.
- 9:31Moving up to 28. So now Officially top, 30
- 9:35staying at five moving wolf higher.
- 9:37In the ACC rankings again, we look at 24/7, we don't look at
- 9:43composite. And for those who haven't heard
- 9:46Ryan, you do the explanation of Rivals, okay?
- 9:50They're not having camps Rivals tries with the one that Jack's
- 9:53it up. The ESPN and that's the one that
- 9:58really because you never know when they're going to
- 10:01re-evaluate. And then a lot of guys that
- 10:04don't have a big offer list, they don't rate it all or throw
- 10:08a generic three star rating on them.
- 10:11That's essentially the lowest average three star rating.
- 10:15You can attach to a player. So it's really hard to know what
- 10:20that rating even tells you. It's there.
- 10:24It's part of the composite. But oftentimes, it doesn't tell
- 10:27you a whole lot, especially for guys that aren't that.
- 10:29That don't have a big offer sheet that aren't going to all
- 10:32these camps and things like that.
- 10:34Rivals is kind of in the middle there, they tend to rate more
- 10:40based on their Camp evaluations than they do on a lot of the
- 10:44high school tape. So you know mileage may vary
- 10:48depending on offer list and who's going to what camps and
- 10:51how many camps they're going to and things of that nature.
- 10:54I'm 24/7 seems to be good because they do look at the
- 10:57whole picture and they do reevaluate their rankings on a
- 11:01periodic time frame. So that's why we base our
- 11:08opinions. We carry their their opinion
- 11:11with a higher regard than the the other Publications.
- 11:14But unfortunately when it comes to the total class ranking
- 11:18composite still seems to be the go-to default by both 24/7 and
- 11:25Any publication that's, you know, talking about those
- 11:27rankings in general. So it's really hard to get away
- 11:31from it. But I like what 24/7 does better
- 11:34than the rest. Absolutely.
- 11:37And again, Brian. I feel like it's about every
- 11:39month. You give that synopsis.
- 11:40It's a great job. Hey, it's very true and it's why
- 11:46we go with them. And it's kind of, well, we'll
- 11:48stick with them and you look at where they got players, they
- 11:51usually hit more than more than not, Speaking of recruiting
- 11:56added a new staff member since the last time.
- 11:59We talked Brian. Yes we did.
- 12:01Yeah. Alex White.
- 12:04Young lady the UNC graduate from 2020 while there.
- 12:08She had worked for the unc's recruiting coordinator, and
- 12:11director of on-campus recruiting, which is her title
- 12:15at Virginia Tech. She had also had most recently
- 12:21been up at Appalachian State in a similar type role but
- 12:25obviously, you know, there's there's steps of where you take
- 12:28in You know it's what we needed were still years behind but
- 12:36seeing the that the pieces are being added.
- 12:40It's not nice. Yeah.
- 12:42And like you said, she's coming with some good qualifications
- 12:45here was in a role like this at UNC where she graduated then
- 12:52moved on to App State which, you know, there she was doing
- 12:55something very similar director of on-campus recruiting.
- 12:59I think it's a really big. Great.
- 13:01Add. The one thing that stood out to
- 13:03me was when I was looking apparently, she also did
- 13:07defensive film breakdown while adapt State.
- 13:10Oh, wow. Which I thought was a pretty
- 13:12cool thing to that, that comes to the table there.
- 13:15When you talk about on-campus recruiting so it sounds like,
- 13:18you know, there's she's not just someone that is there to handle
- 13:23the logistical things of the on-campus recruiting sounds like
- 13:25she can talk shop a little bit with the recruits as well, which
- 13:28is I think a very good attribute to bring to this role.
- 13:32So I'm looking forward to seeing what she can do in this room.
- 13:36Absolutely love hearing that she's helping break down tape
- 13:41again, you're going to be on campus with them, and you're
- 13:43going to be showing a lot of things, but if you need to talk
- 13:46to shop, that is such a key. She's also a baby man.
- 13:50I mean she's literally going to be four years older than most of
- 13:55these guys. Yep or years older absence ain't
- 13:59you want to talk about connecting with the recruits
- 14:03that are coming on campus? This is someone you need.
- 14:05This is the age. Each group you need and it
- 14:08reaches you. You know, with Corey and, you
- 14:12know, Avail wins over coming back, they're a little bit older
- 14:15doing the football side of things.
- 14:16But if we're looking at this on-campus, recruiting thing,
- 14:18this is, this is kind of a formula for help.
- 14:22Now, do you want to add some? Maybe some Hokies to assist her.
- 14:25Absolutely give her. Give them give her some people
- 14:30that can help with the lay of the land.
- 14:31You want to be playing football players, we don't know, let her
- 14:33build her step. If of who she feels like, it's
- 14:36going to be the best to help out but Again, work slowly catching
- 14:41up. All right, Brian.
- 14:44Let's get to the big news because not that the other stuff
- 14:48isn't big news. Bring your couple weeks ago, was
- 14:50massive news. Hollifield we were waiting,
- 14:52we're waiting. We're hoping he comes in
- 14:55building the recruiting staff, big news, but yesterday. when
- 15:00day comes out basically says, he has made his decision and that
- 15:05decision is Hendon hooker is our starter.
- 15:11I am shocked. Shocked.
- 15:14Not shocked at all. What was a little shocking?
- 15:20But maybe turned a few heads. I would say Braxton Burmeister,
- 15:26will be will play against UVA, will likely have a role in the
- 15:30offense this season, regardless of hooker, starting role here.
- 15:35So that wasn't exactly There wasn't a lot of details about
- 15:41what that's going to look like. So I mean, what did you take
- 15:44from that Curtis. Hi.
- 15:45Well, I took a couple things from the Braxton I think this is
- 15:50with all the craziness going on by saying those.
- 15:54It's a kind of a chance to keep Braxton.
- 15:57Hey you're going to be part of the offense in some way so we
- 15:59can keep you in how sources am going to the portal.
- 16:01As we see we get three four games in guys will get in the
- 16:05portal try to get to the next stop even though he's not
- 16:08losing. See this year, you still want to
- 16:10try to get where your attention. We could play next so maybe
- 16:13that's one reason. But other reasons is it's it,
- 16:18you forced other teams to game plan.
- 16:21You know, he is, he does have more speed than hinden, not the
- 16:24tendon slow, but he has more top end speed than him.
- 16:27So you're making teams have to look at additional Pape.
- 16:32Now, when the UVA comes around, we'll see how much he actually
- 16:37plays. So, you know, that's going to be
- 16:40an interesting thing. But honest, this is, this is, I
- 16:45want to put this in, make sure sounds right.
- 16:47So Grand Slam need to got you. If I told you henin hooker after
- 16:52the end of this 11 game season, 2268 percent of his passes.
- 16:59Threw for 26, touchdowns versus four interceptions.
- 17:05Heading hookers, six-foot-four 225 lbs.
- 17:09If he has that type of season, He can potentially move on.
- 17:15Yeah. I mean, it's not, I mean are you
- 17:21trying to be a realist here? But six foot four guys who are
- 17:25somewhat athletic? You know, he has a really good
- 17:29season. He could move up the draft board
- 17:32and potentially have to say next year.
- 17:34Hey, I'm gone. And what you get to do with this
- 17:38by having Braxton potentially start playing as you don't lose
- 17:41him. Yep.
- 17:43You don't look, you don't lose them and you get him, some
- 17:46meaningful reps in the offense. He would potentially be taking
- 17:49over should head and okra move on.
- 17:52I mean, I like what you're saying about the the idea of
- 17:58gamesmanship for UVA. I think that's part of it.
- 18:02I think there's some other aspects that play into it as
- 18:06well, having an unique skill set across all three of these
- 18:10quarterbacks I think the reason Seeing Braxton, get more run.
- 18:14Is that a guy like QP is going to have more of a specific type
- 18:20of package design for him if we get him involved in the offense
- 18:24but other than having a little bit more athleticism, the
- 18:27offense would more or less run the same whether hendon's in
- 18:30there versus Braxton. So I think having him is the guy
- 18:34that's kind of the plug their Works in that regard.
- 18:39But like you said, they brawl bring things different to the
- 18:42table. So I think that's going to be
- 18:44something that coach Fuente plays around with it, and he
- 18:47said it during the presser that, you know, Braxton had done a lot
- 18:51during camp, and he made a point that he had a lot of athleticism
- 18:56in a lot of could make some plays.
- 18:58And that, essentially saying it's going to be hard to keep me
- 19:02off the field even if I'm not, you know, the starting
- 19:05quarterback. So exactly what me, he also
- 19:08spent a lot of great things about About him to talk about
- 19:10he's just been pleased with everything.
- 19:12He's done throughout Camp, he continues to grow but also me
- 19:17and you looked at that picture of him then at the podium
- 19:19yesterday. Yep.
- 19:21Hendon, look, bear. And I know they said his weight
- 19:24to down a couple pounds. He looked bigger in his chest.
- 19:28We saw some of the photos of him.
- 19:29Practicing his legs. Look bigger.
- 19:31Yeah, I think he's more solid. I think, you know, when we look
- 19:35at look at him you might be down a little bit Weight Wise but I
- 19:38think he's Kind of spread it out a little bit.
- 19:42As it were, he's not not so much string, bean down-low anymore on
- 19:47the wallet. So I think I think that's going
- 19:49to be good for us and I liked I liked it coach Fuente went ahead
- 19:53and said you know hendon's our starter because that's what we
- 19:56wanted to hear. That's where we wanted to go.
- 19:58It's nice starting the year with a quarterback that you are
- 20:03familiar with and that you know, can leave the offense.
- 20:07You know, doesn't turn the ball over. /.
- 20:10So, I'm excited about that. It brings some continuity, and
- 20:14it's a guy that has shown himself to be a leader in that.
- 20:18All the guys on that offense. Trust.
- 20:20Exactly. And, you know, you also see pain
- 20:25and talked about it, he was working out in the Triad with,
- 20:29with Trey, the Old Hockey DJ Crossing with the recoiling from
- 20:32the Bears. Again it me and you talked about
- 20:37it, his dad. A hell of a quarterback, when
- 20:42you played, you know, you know, the Hall of Famer.
- 20:44I think down it in North Carolina, A&T.
- 20:47I don't think he let Hendon and his little brother just chill
- 20:51out during quarantine. I think he was like, you need to
- 20:54go, get better. Looks like that's what happened
- 20:57with with hinden, all right. So quarterbacks are set feel
- 21:05good about it. Feel really good about it but
- 21:08then we got bad news. Use my breakout player and I
- 21:12will put them as my breakout player, official he did break
- 21:18something, we don't know. Ankle leg is out indefinitely.
- 21:24They did not say for the season. Justin definitely.
- 21:29It's definitely a blow. But we're going to talk about
- 21:35the wide receiver room in a little bit here.
- 21:36Brian. But Brian, give me your personal
- 21:38experiences with The ankle injury.
- 21:40I mean do you think he's done one like we're not gonna see him
- 21:43until spring ball next year or could he show back up a lot of
- 21:49that's gonna depend on whether there was any ligament damage in
- 21:52the ankle if that's what was broken or and that severity of
- 21:57the the break more than likely if it was a pretty clean break,
- 22:03he's going to be probably eight to ten weeks total healing.
- 22:09Healing and then probably maybe one or two weeks to get back up
- 22:13to to playing shape after that. So you have some potential to
- 22:19get him back for Clemson, maybe a bowl game, if it's something
- 22:23like that. Now, if it's ligaments, you
- 22:26talked about more invasive surgery, you're talking about
- 22:29longer recovery time and you're talking about longer like
- 22:33physical therapy after you get past those, the recovery stage.
- 22:38So That would push him more into the kind of late December.
- 22:44Ramping it back up in late December and I just don't think
- 22:48that that's, that's something that's worth rolling the dice
- 22:51with, as he's coming off that injury because with ligaments,
- 22:54it takes a while to get them back to where they're operating
- 22:58at the same level. I had an ankle injury my senior
- 23:01year and of high school and I was even follow the following
- 23:07year to start off. I wasn't quite the player that I
- 23:09I was the year before in terms of flexibility and being able to
- 23:14drive off of that that ankle with the same degree of power
- 23:18that I could before one offseason in that program
- 23:23knocked that out. But you know it's one of those
- 23:26things to keep an eye on and you're going to want to not rush
- 23:30a kid back if he's got that type of ligament damage.
- 23:33Yeah makes sense. So let's hope for a speedy
- 23:35recovery. Let's hope it was a clean break.
- 23:37Let's hope maybe we get him. I'm own field time at the end of
- 23:40the season. Now some food came up with and
- 23:44said that kind of thing took all of us impact basically said if
- 23:48we were to have to play in Sea State this week, it was going to
- 23:53be a struggle, which I think we all went, huh?
- 23:58New Jaden's out. My other guys are probably
- 24:00banged up. Me and you we saw that in mean
- 24:06you had some conversation to did some digging and brown we mean
- 24:12you both can say we saw this report.
- 24:16It's are there is one major starter that would be out, do
- 24:19covid. Yeah.
- 24:21And I think that's that's one of the big things that we're going
- 24:25to probably see as the season goes.
- 24:27Goes along is that, you know, there's going to be the
- 24:29potential that a primary starter could miss a game or two
- 24:33depending on depending on what happens here.
- 24:37Obviously if they actually you test positive that's kind of a
- 24:41worst case scenario because you're talking about potentially
- 24:44other side effects from the illness impacting more than just
- 24:48that quarantine period. But if we're talking about
- 24:52things like contact tracing, I mean that can impact several All
- 24:57players at one time depending on the interaction, so that's
- 25:00definitely going to be something to keep a keep an eye on.
- 25:03It seems like This player may or may not be available.
- 25:09Come UVA time, that that's to be seen, but it is something that I
- 25:15think we're just going to have to deal with this year.
- 25:17And unfortunately, you know, it's impacted this here and
- 25:21again could have been a bigger issue if NC State was still on
- 25:25the schedule. So kind of kind of glad we
- 25:28dodged that bullet even though we were, we were hammering in
- 25:31Sea State about a couple weeks ago about prematurely moving
- 25:34that game. Aim.
- 25:35It tends to come back to help us out a little bit here in this
- 25:39case. So big by those when you hear
- 25:42the way he was talking and you know, there's probably going to
- 25:44be some camps bumps and bruises where you'd like to get one
- 25:47extra week. Just a little healing from other
- 25:49players and this shit happens and then we're here and their
- 25:53skill positions that are cross training you know wide receivers
- 25:57playing corner. You tell them what you texted me
- 26:04earlier. About this and the coaches this
- 26:08year. Yeah.
- 26:10They're definitely going to earn their money, man because they're
- 26:13they're juggling a lot of different things.
- 26:16And that's not even getting into the logistical aspects of the
- 26:21protocol that they're following. Just the on the field stuff and
- 26:25not knowing, when you're going to have your guys ready to go,
- 26:29how when one player gets sick that can impact an entire room
- 26:33or an entire? You know, if you're dealing with
- 26:37an apartment two or three players on a team or something
- 26:39like that, if they're in the living quarters, I mean, it can,
- 26:42it can be some some big problems.
- 26:45And I, like I said, the coaches are definitely going to earn
- 26:48their pay this year regardless of how that record ends up.
- 26:51Hopefully it ends up in our favor here but it's definitely
- 26:55going to be a struggle throughout the year.
- 26:57It's going to be a struggle with the patience of the fans because
- 27:00I think they're going to see some big names at some point in
- 27:06the season, are going to be sitting out for reasons that
- 27:09aren't directly related to Major injuries or things like that,
- 27:13that we're accustomed to seeing. So I think there's going to be
- 27:16some frustration there, but I think it's like anything else.
- 27:21I think the coaching staff and the players are gonna come out
- 27:25of this, on the other side, better for it, but it sucks when
- 27:29you're in the moment, absolutely.
- 27:32Man. So you said it to me, they will
- 27:34learn their money this year and, you know, definitely they're
- 27:40trying to do things and I think it's going to be weeks.
- 27:43We as college football hangout, just Virginia Tech fans are
- 27:45going to be watching a game, and there's going to be somebody not
- 27:48there and it's not going to be like he didn't there's no
- 27:52reports of him banging. His ankle or you know bruising
- 27:55his shoulder old crap that he get it.
- 27:58And now I know people have been saying a lot of Oh, CDC,
- 28:02guidelines 14 days. No, CDC.
- 28:04Live lines are no longer 14 days.
- 28:07So I wish people out there to keep saying that would correct
- 28:10themselves. It's 10 days now, correct,
- 28:13Brian? Yes, it is 10 days.
- 28:17So, in obviously, I think some of the protocols others, you can
- 28:2210 days quarantine or three consecutive negative test To
- 28:28confirm it, you're done with it. So obviously, you know, acc's
- 28:32testing three times a week. Regardless I think if you've got
- 28:35a player and you know, he's one of your big players and they get
- 28:39it. You know, there's going to be
- 28:43testing every day every day. Let's see if we can bang out
- 28:46three negatives to get it back at practice.
- 28:48So yeah, I'm not sure how the protocol works on that.
- 28:51I know we had talked about that before, but the big thing that
- 28:54I'm questioning this one is that I see The the the specific
- 28:59protocol is that if a player misses a game due to covid that
- 29:05they would need to have consecutive test on Monday,
- 29:08Wednesday and Friday of the following week in order to play
- 29:12a game on Saturday, but I don't know how that impacts this
- 29:15situation where we haven't played a game yet.
- 29:19So, I don't know if we're technically considered in season
- 29:22yet or not because we haven't started our season.
- 29:26So I don't know if we can just kind of as soon as we get three
- 29:29consecutive test, whether it's, you know, in on that game week
- 29:33or not, whether that would clear someone to start practicing
- 29:36again, or whether you have to follow that Monday, Wednesday,
- 29:40Friday, where we might only get like a walkthrough with with
- 29:45that player before, you know, we go to play a game Yeah, just
- 29:49just more things. Answered than unarmed unanswered
- 29:54than answered about this stuff. All right, let's get back to
- 29:57good. Good news, Mitch been Rahim
- 30:00Blackshear. Brian got the eligibility
- 30:03immediately even the loss of J&P out.
- 30:06Boost the room significantly found out.
- 30:10And I want to get your take on this mention that kavion
- 30:15Robinson will be playing some on the outside confirmed, by for
- 30:18Wednesday. What does that tell you about
- 30:20him? And about, what this Office.
- 30:22Potentially look like it tells you that some of the things
- 30:25we've been talking about on this podcast and of come to fruition.
- 30:32We had talked about Tavian playing outside.
- 30:36As soon as we saw Blackshear was going to be playing for us this
- 30:39year. Potentially, waver, waver,
- 30:42notwithstanding, now that we've got it, that's the reason he's
- 30:45been playing outside some because we want to get our three
- 30:49best guys on the field a lot and that's In terms of the receiving
- 30:52position I think is going to be trait a and Blackshear under
- 30:55both circumstances with with Mitchell out there playing tight
- 31:01end and maybe even splitting out wide.
- 31:04But what I like is that you can match up so many different
- 31:09situations here with the same Personnel so you can run 21,
- 31:14Personnel. You've got, let's just say, we
- 31:18got Herbert at running back. Blackshear is the Second running
- 31:22back. We've got a tie it in with James
- 31:24Mitchell tray. And Tay outside, you can put
- 31:29Blackshear in the slide, you can put Blackshear in the wing, you
- 31:32can split James Mitchell out wide and put Tavia on in the
- 31:37slot and have two running backs with Blackshear taking either
- 31:41something in the Jet Sweep or running a scene from The Wing.
- 31:45There's so many different things that you can line up and if
- 31:48we're talking about running tempo, And that's what we like
- 31:52to do. When we get some big plays in
- 31:54there, you can run Tempo with so many different formations here,
- 31:59without ever having to sub, because you've got a guy like
- 32:02Blackshear that can literally line up at three or four
- 32:05positions at any given time. And a guy like James Mitchell,
- 32:08that can split out, wide and play in line tight in and play
- 32:12the HVAC. I think the one thing, I mean,
- 32:14you mentioned today, we're talking about some of the
- 32:16formations would be your take. Let's flex mean, you mentioned,
- 32:21let's keep A at The X. Let's put Mitchell out at the Y,
- 32:24and then put tray. And he came inside the slot with
- 32:27Herbert and you kind of sit there.
- 32:30And when I asked you, I was like, Brian, what happens in
- 32:32that situation and you were like, either the strong safety
- 32:36is going to walk over one of the linebackers are going to walk
- 32:39over James Mitchell because I don't think you're going to keep
- 32:42him significantly under sized corner on James Mitchell,
- 32:46especially when you got treyvion and or Rahim in the slot, they
- 32:50have to go with them. Them.
- 32:52And then you start talking about what and then I asked you, I
- 32:55said Brian what if you're on a Jet Sweep out at what happens
- 32:59and you essentially said you've lost leverage.
- 33:02I mean now you've got a guy you like to have in the Box out of
- 33:06the box and that Ali just opens up.
- 33:10And that's going to be dangerous, there.
- 33:13With the three other guys on the field that can touch the ball
- 33:17and all of them we have seen run jet sweeps for significant big
- 33:21gains. It's scary because as soon as
- 33:24that safety has to walk couple things are going to happen that
- 33:29safety. Walks over cool.
- 33:30Where's that free safety? Is he staying back 15 yards or
- 33:33she coming up on the box? Because if he's coming up in the
- 33:36box man you talk about like running a Herbert pop passed.
- 33:41Or running in a heme pop pass or a quick slant or something, just
- 33:44attacking, essentially stressing them to say, you better, not
- 33:49make a mistake with the where you're playing on the outside
- 33:52where you're going to get burned.
- 33:53You have no one back there to protect the tack the seam with
- 33:57whoever we got dream Prejudice. Something else mentioned about
- 34:02the wide receiver groups it again with the Jane injury
- 34:06basically Chang and Evan are pleasing coach to pick up things
- 34:09quick. I don't think that shocks us
- 34:13with the age of those guys and being, you know, Chang of being
- 34:16at Villanova for three years but no was always pretty good FCS
- 34:20team, Evan being out of Kansas seen several offenses.
- 34:25Again, it makes you feel good. It makes you feel good.
- 34:28Like, I think with Evan fairs you getting the Red Zone, okay.
- 34:30Throw him out there and put James on the other side of that
- 34:33trade staying down here. Put him in the black backfield.
- 34:37Yep. If they bring up some some other
- 34:43mismatches there I mean when you're talking about those two
- 34:45guys being with the skill that fares brings and then with the
- 34:52just the output that Hodge brings to the table.
- 34:55I mean those are guys that you're talking about are the
- 34:57first man Off the Bench potentially for us.
- 35:01I mean that's that's crazy that that you're talking about
- 35:04getting guys in there that you're going to see very little
- 35:06drop off between when you have to sub or when you have to have
- 35:10a guy that Needs to come on for a particular role or something
- 35:14like that in the Red Zone, because I think fares is going
- 35:17to play that Red Zone. Role that, that Hazleton or Phil
- 35:20Patterson played for us in the past, with those Red Zone fades,
- 35:25Absolutely. Also we hear Kayla Smith who
- 35:28caught some balls last year's continuing to take good steps
- 35:31and you mentioned a grand, just the Personnel groupings.
- 35:35We have the potential for now with the running back with the
- 35:38wide receivers, with the tight ends with Mitchell and gallo and
- 35:42Drake, There should I do put a I'll spot?
- 35:50If we don't average 36 as we did with him and started last year
- 35:54somebody I get fired. Yeah.
- 35:56Because we definitely have the Personnel to create a lot of
- 36:00matchup problems. We may not be at the top end.
- 36:05Have a guy like Hazleton that you know, can run deep, but can
- 36:10also he's got the size to make plays in the red zone as well.
- 36:15We may not have that player anymore, the in one package, but
- 36:18we've got so many Dynamic players that we can mix and
- 36:22match as we need to. There's no reason we shouldn't
- 36:26be as good or better on offense than we were with hinting at the
- 36:30at the helm. Last year, I will say this.
- 36:33It's kind of funny. I know they were talking about,
- 36:37you know, talking about the quarterbacks, the new nickname
- 36:39for hooker. Did you see it?
- 36:42Oh, Oh, Captain Hook. Captain Hook.
- 36:45I like it. I like it.
- 36:50We need to keep that running the captain.
- 36:52The hope is even though it's not Captain Hook I hope he you know
- 36:58scores a touchdown and gives a Captain Morgan's pose.
- 37:03But yeah. So all things considered what's
- 37:07happened over the last few weeks has been relatively.
- 37:11Positive news for the Hokies on numerous fronts and it's all
- 37:16from and it's awesome that we're sitting here tonight. 14-7
- 37:21Houston 14-7 Miami dick King he looked.
- 37:28Okay. I'll tell you what has not
- 37:31looked. Okay.
- 37:32Well that the Miami Hurricanes offensive line Hold on.
- 37:37Shot that offensive line will still going to be bad porous.
- 37:45Now, what we thought was going to happen and what may still
- 37:48potentially happen is the season goes along, is that the air raid
- 37:51and having a quick trigger was going to take a little bit of
- 37:54pressure off that poor unit. The problem is that they also
- 37:58can establish anything in the Run game because they're poor in
- 38:01that category as well. So unless they are getting
- 38:04positive yards through the air. First and second down, they're
- 38:08still going to struggle. Because anything more than the
- 38:10three step drop, there's going to be somebody in Kings lap.
- 38:14Yeah. And we've seen it tonight.
- 38:16This was not planned At All, by us.
- 38:19We've seen it tonight, several times.
- 38:20They've gotten third and long. They don't know what to do.
- 38:23They don't. There were certain 14 and just,
- 38:25it was just like, it was like, it was chaos back there.
- 38:28So you see all them automatically.
- 38:31They have their week, they have their weakness or defense looks
- 38:34good. The pass rush does Is not, you
- 38:37can tell they're missing a guy. Who's gonna be a first-round
- 38:40pick? Yeah you can tell me right now
- 38:42it's even game other than a safety missing a fill and
- 38:45letting a 41 dive go for 50 yards know what really grinds
- 38:53Brian's gears. Oh man.
- 39:00I was telling some other folks I'm gonna start I'm gonna start
- 39:03my own little video series of, just me watching film of
- 39:06safeties. Either filling late sooner in
- 39:10the wrong Gap or what we've got coming in with the wrong
- 39:14leverage. We're gonna go thing is
- 39:16fundamental. Hey, that's what we need to do.
- 39:20But along with this podcast, we're just going to do a ten
- 39:22minute video of bad. Safety feels I'll bring it up.
- 39:26I'll stay there. Just let you give the reactions
- 39:29in your face. That's just like, it's going to
- 39:32be like, the Gruden quarterback things.
- 39:36This is going to be brutal shitting on quarterback.
- 39:38Play is going to be shitting on safeties.
- 39:40Filling, tell me what you did wrong there.
- 39:47Did you choose the wrong side? Oh yes, you did.
- 39:50You chose the wrong side? I've got a couple with a stick
- 39:52though, like I need I need some sort of Catchphrase or, you
- 39:56know, change my voice slightly. Lisa would like overemphasizes
- 39:59the wrong word to funny, man. Ron, since we do have heat, pick
- 40:06that homes. Almost had a massive mistake.
- 40:12This is what happens live podcast?
- 40:13We're not editing that out either.
- 40:15No. All right, well, we got games
- 40:17this weekend, Brian. And I thought what we would do
- 40:19as the season gets here is we're going to weekly.
- 40:22We are going to pick, obviously, we're going to pick a game, but
- 40:26we're going to do the other ACC game.
- 40:28As well against the spread, maybe throw in some over unders,
- 40:31what we see happening. And then we're going to look at
- 40:32one out of conference game. So, Brian, I'm gonna let you
- 40:36lead us off. We've got Syracuse UNC.
- 40:40Um, see is laying 22 and a half points.
- 40:43What you got? Give me cues from the points.
- 40:49And I am going to agree with you on that last year that you take
- 40:58away the temple game. Every game was like a one or two
- 41:02point of, you're telling me that that defense got that much
- 41:04better in the season. And I'm not saying Syracuse has
- 41:06a world beater but I don't see 22 and a half points.
- 41:11The over-under, I think was like 65, so what they're saying is
- 41:15basically 4222 type game. And I just can't see you and see
- 41:22covering I think search you can get a couple late scores to make
- 41:26it a little more interesting so we agree on that one.
- 41:30All right um do you Notre Dame? I'll jump on that one Brian all
- 41:35right what you got Notre Dame land 20 I am going to take the
- 41:39Irish. In this case I'm also looking at
- 41:43the over-under of 54. Go over 50 for Notre.
- 41:47Dame has some players to score points.
- 41:49Points. I think cutcliffe with the new
- 41:51quarterback could probably get a few extra on there to get that
- 41:54over. Not by more than 20 though, what
- 41:57about you? Yeah, I'm going the same route.
- 41:59I'm taking the Irish here. I just don't think with working
- 42:03in a new quarterback that Dukes going to be firing enough on all
- 42:06cylinders to put up quite enough points to Close the spread their
- 42:14I do think you're right about the over under this.
- 42:16So we'll see how that goes. But yeah, I'm going to take take
- 42:20the Irish on this one. Yeah.
- 42:22Like it's going to be like, Irish mid-40s.
- 42:25Do you know, 21 like 48 51? Are they the overs hit easy?
- 42:31So, yeah. All right, Brian.
- 42:35And Nick, Georgia Tech, Florida, state, Florida, State laying
- 42:42twelve and a half. Well you got here Call me crazy.
- 42:50I'm going Florida State here. I'm buying a little bit of the
- 42:55height. Not much of a height but just
- 42:57enough of the hype by and just enough of the Mike Norvell
- 43:01height to say 12 and a half hours of Georgia Tech Team.
- 43:10I'm a billing course on. You not so fast.
- 43:12I'll take Georgia Tech. Give me the 12 and a half.
- 43:16They played hard last year for Jeff Collins.
- 43:19I think they'll continue to play hard.
- 43:22I think this one's going to be more of a grind, but I think
- 43:25what college like to do and you mention what seems like decades
- 43:30ago, the power Run game, I think that they're going to probably
- 43:35try to slow it to a crawl against them, they're going to
- 43:39try to slow it down. Maybe wrong, Morgan Wilson, some
- 43:41of those guys at FSU on that line or beasts.
- 43:44Yep. I think they're going to slow it
- 43:45down and I'm sorry. Florida State's.
- 43:49They have the second worst offensive line in the ACC they
- 43:53do. Their offensive line is pretty
- 43:56atrocious as well, but I think some of, you know, we said it
- 44:01with Miami, I don't think Miami is quite having as much luck,
- 44:04but I think some of the offensive wrinkles that are
- 44:08going to be brought to the table are going to help take some of
- 44:12that load off the offensive line.
- 44:14I think they're probably a little improved based on what
- 44:17they were last year. Hopefully more improved than
- 44:21what Miami is showing right now. If I'm going to be correcting my
- 44:25my guess here, but I think floor.
- 44:28The state is going to be an improved team this year, so I
- 44:35don't think they're going to be great, but they will be
- 44:36improved. So I'm going to take them here.
- 44:39Got it. All right, so the big matchup,
- 44:42oh, the big matchup. And anyway, and what should have
- 44:49been Virginia, Tech Penn State game day in Blacksburg.
- 44:54Yep, then the weekend the big game day bites.
- 44:58Hop is Clemson Lake Force. Weight gets the host game day
- 45:02with no fans, which sucks. I don't say in Winston with no
- 45:08fans in the middle of the stadium.
- 45:10All right wait Clemson behind you seen the laundry list?
- 45:16Yeah, I saw the line. They went, they went full
- 45:23full-bore, Clemson there, I think Hudson's laying 30 through
- 45:29I think last year they had 38 and they covered without he's
- 45:33they're going to cover this again.
- 45:35I mean that's my thought I'd 33. I think they're usually going to
- 45:39cover it. Not so fast.
- 45:43My friend give me waking the points.
- 45:47I don't think that this Clemson offense is going to get to 50
- 45:52and I think if they want to cover, they got to get to 50.
- 45:55All right. I know that wake is losing a
- 45:57good deal on on offense, including their quarterback from
- 46:01last year, but I think they can get to like, 17 against Clemson
- 46:06and I don't think Clemson gets too much more than 45.
- 46:10So, The math Works in my favor, if I'm subtracting correctly,
- 46:15there were 17, you get me by point, it's gonna be
- 46:23interesting. You got a couple more matchups
- 46:26here, one more ACC last ACC matchup this week is Western
- 46:30Kentucky, Louisville Louisville, laying 11, and a half.
- 46:37What you think man? Well I mean what's Kentucky was
- 46:40a good team last year when they were not in, for which is you
- 46:43know, the first thing this early in the season if you're looking
- 46:47at lines and we're doing this for fun, maybe it'll be a beer
- 46:50better, something at the end of the season.
- 46:52Yeah. But the first thing we go, the
- 46:54first thing you look at is like, let me look at last season 9 and
- 46:584. Let's see.
- 46:58That's not bad, you know, they're not a big plan.
- 47:03Okay conference. I just feel like Like it's
- 47:06smelly it's one of those smell. He's like they want you to take
- 47:10Western Kentucky like oh look the team believed it was good
- 47:15too. So I gotta go Louise I think
- 47:18Louisville's going to win by more than eleven and a half.
- 47:21I don't see them like blowing doors off of Western Kentucky.
- 47:24I don't see it like them by four scores but I see them like 17
- 47:30somewhere. Like I see this as a 17-point
- 47:33game. I think Lula's offense just
- 47:35going to be You much regardless of whether Western Kentucky can
- 47:41score on Louisville's defense or not Louisville is probably one
- 47:47of the five best teams in the ACC this year.
- 47:52I just think they're going to have more in the tank,
- 47:54especially on offense and I think they're going to see their
- 47:57offense. Probably take another step this
- 47:59year relative to last year. So I think they're going to
- 48:02score some points. They'll be in Probably at least
- 48:07in the low 40s I would say and I don't think Western Kentucky
- 48:11gets in the in the 30s so it makes sense, how you how you do
- 48:16things just like you have to logically play it out in your
- 48:19head and get the fourth - no, they can get the dirty and I
- 48:22can't get to 30. Yeah. 42 42 27.
- 48:28Yeah something like that. Yeah.
- 48:30Alright. So we're going to go to the one
- 48:31out of conference game, lots to choose from this week.
- 48:37But I got to go with this team. Gave us what potential is going
- 48:43to be our starting center for this year Coastal Carolina,
- 48:46Kansas 10:00 Eastern Time Zone kick.
- 48:53Because what do you think? I think Kansas is going to
- 49:05cover. I think they're going to be just
- 49:08enough to cover that, although I do think Coastal Carolina's
- 49:13going to give them all they want.
- 49:14For four quarters. I Coastal Carolina's win.
- 49:19This game outright so give me the points.
- 49:23Coastal's winning this game, Lock and Load.
- 49:52And weekend. Because usually the second
- 49:54weekend is going to be big matchup cross conferences.
- 49:57Even some early in season big conference matchup, probably
- 50:01not. But, you know, just to see it.
- 50:04It makes us feel like we're in some sort of normalcy, even
- 50:08without fans in the stands, you know?
- 50:12It's our Traditions, you sit around, on Saturday, you slip a
- 50:16few bruised, he little food and watch some college football.
- 50:21Yeah, I'm looking forward to feeling like that, normal, as
- 50:27normal as it can be Sports Saturday.
- 50:29Now just, you know, getting some beers.
- 50:34I'll make you some food BBQ and some some meat.
- 50:37What you got, what's on the menu, Saturday menu, for
- 50:41Saturday, I think I'm going to do some poor man's burn in, so
- 50:46I'm going to get some some chuck roast smoking, web cut them up.
- 50:51Will brown sugar and barbecue sauce?
- 50:54Let them cook a little longer. A little meat candy, very nice,
- 50:59my friend, very nice about you. You got anything on the docket,
- 51:04you're going to bring to the table.
- 51:06Um I got like three, I got like full 1 inch pork chops, that was
- 51:12supposed to get cooked tonight, but didn't because chaos broke
- 51:16out of my house. So, maybe I'll grow those up on.
- 51:18Saturday evening, he go It's too early though.
- 51:23It, sometimes you. You love to cook and Grill.
- 51:27Don't get me wrong. I love to cook and grow as well.
- 51:29But sometimes on Saturdays, it's just like, I'm just, what do you
- 51:32want to order? You some Harley's Wings.
- 51:34Yeah, let's do it half time. Half time happens in 20 minutes.

- 51:40I can drive up and get them. There you go.
- 51:42Yeah, you got to time it right? You got oh that's going to be 15
- 51:45minutes. All right all right.
- 51:46I'll yep. Now leave the house now get
- 51:51there. Get back maybe miss one play
- 51:54second half kickoff. Maybe maybe a couple plays, but
- 51:59I can live with that. Absolutely.
