- 0:08Speaker 3: Fantastic, Jess. Thanks for joining us today, Rotherly.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Absolutely as you say.
- 0:13Speaker 4: Man ck White returned to Australia for the first time
- 0:16Speaker 4: in fourteen years next January for three special shows, starting
- 0:19Speaker 4: in Melbourne on January twenty third, then hitting Sydney and
- 0:22Speaker 4: Brisbane at the consecutive night so in a while, Brow,
- 0:25Speaker 4: does it feel good to be finally coming back?
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't believe it's been fourteen years. That's crazy, man,
- 0:33Speaker 2: It is deep putting.
- 0:35Speaker 4: Is a long time too, bro. So what's changed since
- 0:37Speaker 4: last time you were out of here? Uh?
- 0:40Speaker 1: We have a new bass player, Mike leon.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Man.
- 0:44Speaker 1: He's a shredder.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Uh.
- 0:47Speaker 2: He worked with the Cavaliers and he did some stuff
- 0:52Speaker 2: with that new band Igor.
- 0:53Speaker 1: It's really cool. Yeah. So he makes my job easy.
- 0:59Speaker 4: You know. It's a bit different stuff I splayed. I've
- 1:03Speaker 4: been the band I've had had. It got of fit
- 1:05Speaker 4: in with what you guys do, but give it a
- 1:06Speaker 4: bit of punch or.
- 1:07Speaker 2: A Yeah, definitely, he's he's locked in with me, like
- 1:12Speaker 2: in the pocket the whole time, and it's it's awesome.
- 1:17Speaker 1: We've we've only played a couple of gigs with him
- 1:20Speaker 1: so far, but.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Uh, every gig has been really, really solid and awesome.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Yeah, and you guys know, well nine figure royal authentic
- 1:29Speaker 4: live performances, mate, So run us through a typical c
- 1:32Speaker 4: KY live show and what we can expect, Well.
- 1:36Speaker 2: We're looking forward to playing a headlining set because uh,
- 1:40Speaker 2: last few times we came there it was like, I
- 1:42Speaker 2: think the last time c KY I was there was
- 1:44Speaker 2: sound Wave Festival. So yeah, I'm looking forward to getting
- 1:49Speaker 2: to play for a good, solid, you know, two hours
- 1:52Speaker 2: or hour and a half or whatever the club allows us.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Gotta gotta fight sto ry like.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Neither of us is as young as what we used
- 2:01Speaker 4: to be, man like is it does it get any
- 2:03Speaker 4: harder doing the live shows that you have to compensate
- 2:05Speaker 4: a bit just because maybe you can't jump as higher,
- 2:08Speaker 4: you can't bend that way anymore.
- 2:10Speaker 2: You know, the show's outside in the summer when it's
- 2:13Speaker 2: hot out.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Oh man, I can feel it really bad.
- 2:18Speaker 3: I feel like.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Five songs in and I'm I'm ready to fall over.
- 2:24Speaker 4: I'll have to be there for you waiting in the
- 2:26Speaker 4: front ride brother, and I'll just pass it up and
- 2:28Speaker 4: start looking like that.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Yeah, lots of gatorades is the trick.
- 2:32Speaker 3: All right?
- 2:33Speaker 4: Yeah? All You've got over twenty five years worth of
- 2:38Speaker 4: materially to draw on. So how difficult is it coming
- 2:41Speaker 4: up with a setlist to please as many people as possible?
- 2:45Speaker 1: Yeah, it's tricky.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I mean we we kind of look at you know,
- 2:49Speaker 2: the the Spotify and all that stuff and see what
- 2:53Speaker 2: songs people want to hear the most, and uh, looking
- 2:57Speaker 2: forward to playing some new tunes on this on this
- 3:00Speaker 2: coming up.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Yeah, and you guys in short, pretty much all over
- 3:04Speaker 3: the world.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Man, you've been doing it for a while now, so
- 3:07Speaker 4: how do you It's got to start getting to you
- 3:09Speaker 4: after a while, Like, how do you keep it fresh
- 3:11Speaker 4: and interesting on the road.
- 3:15Speaker 2: You know, the older I get, the more I like
- 3:19Speaker 2: history and stuff like that. So I walk around the
- 3:22Speaker 2: cities and check out cool stuff. Really, that's that keeps
- 3:27Speaker 2: me interested.
- 3:29Speaker 3: To break the monotony.
- 3:31Speaker 5: Yeah, So I want to go back to the beginning
- 3:36Speaker 5: of c KY mate, Like you formed the band in
- 3:38Speaker 5: Pennsylvania back in ninety ninety eight, So what was it
- 3:41Speaker 5: musical climate like that gave Birth to cy Where did
- 3:44Speaker 5: you fit in back in the early days?
- 3:47Speaker 2: Uh?
- 3:48Speaker 1: Same as now.
- 3:48Speaker 2: We don't really fit in anywhere, which is a blessing
- 3:54Speaker 2: and a curse, you know, because I feel like, you know,
- 4:00Speaker 2: I've had We've been doing this a long time, and
- 4:03Speaker 2: a lot of bands can't really say that.
- 4:06Speaker 1: So it's funny. When we played the festivals, they don't
- 4:09Speaker 1: know where to put us.
- 4:10Speaker 4: You know.
- 4:10Speaker 1: We played the metal.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Stage, the punk stage, the rock stage.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Yeah, so it's funny in that respect.
- 4:18Speaker 2: But yeah, I think kind of having our own sound
- 4:24Speaker 2: has definitely afforded us to have a career this long.
- 4:28Speaker 1: So I don't take that for granted at all, you know.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, what was what was your early beach for
- 4:34Speaker 3: the band? And how's it changed?
- 4:35Speaker 4: Seems so the world today is so different back when
- 4:38Speaker 4: you started, So how you have to Adaptoi?
- 4:40Speaker 1: I guess he is, Well, I'm still trying to get
- 4:43Speaker 1: used to.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Uh.
- 4:45Speaker 2: You know, when we started, you put out a record,
- 4:48Speaker 2: and then you toured to sell records, and now you
- 4:51Speaker 2: put out a record to do a tour.
- 4:54Speaker 1: It's just completely one aged.
- 4:57Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean, I don't know, it's still the
- 5:03Speaker 2: same as it was back then. We just try to
- 5:05Speaker 2: make music that we want to hear and if people
- 5:08Speaker 2: dig it great.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Hell yeah, man, like your music copied in Jackhaus.
- 5:16Speaker 4: How did how much of a road did that have
- 5:18Speaker 4: in getting you an actual start in the industry.
- 5:23Speaker 1: That's that's the funny thing, you know.
- 5:25Speaker 2: We didn't really have much music industry support at first,
- 5:30Speaker 2: and we had to gain fans through doing skate videos.
- 5:35Speaker 2: And it's funny because Australia was like one of the
- 5:40Speaker 2: first to really uh pick up on us because we're
- 5:45Speaker 2: on Volcom and the surf and skate scene in Australia
- 5:50Speaker 2: is so huge and uh, that was definitely our first
- 5:55Speaker 2: vehicle to uh getting fans, I would say, And yeah,
- 6:01Speaker 2: then it just got more and more crazy as you know,
- 6:06Speaker 2: the Tony Hawk video game and Jackass and just things
- 6:12Speaker 2: like that. It's funny because, you know, record labels, they
- 6:17Speaker 2: didn't really have to push us at radio and all
- 6:20Speaker 2: this stuff like they did with their other bands because
- 6:24Speaker 2: we had our own thing going on through that.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Did they ripe you into doing any stops in check us?
- 6:32Speaker 4: Did you ever have to get down and dirty on that?
- 6:35Speaker 2: Uh? I did plenty, and then I finally had to
- 6:38Speaker 2: like kind of taper off from that because every time
- 6:41Speaker 2: I got hurt a tour would have to be canceled.
- 6:48Speaker 4: What was your worst one way you got hurt?
- 6:51Speaker 2: Oh man, the shopping carts really hurt pretty bad.
- 6:59Speaker 1: My shoulder still hurts on rainy days.
- 7:01Speaker 2: From from the one, there's one I think on c
- 7:05Speaker 2: K Wise three or four, I just went right to pavement.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Usually we go into a bush or something, and I
- 7:13Speaker 2: just went right to pavement and it.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Hurt, like hell yeah, still hurts to this day.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:22Speaker 4: You mentioned before how your music is unique, which it is,
- 7:25Speaker 4: bro like it's impossible to categorize, which I think is
- 7:28Speaker 4: great because I hate the fact music has.
- 7:30Speaker 3: To be labeled these days.
- 7:31Speaker 4: But you've got everything from post runch to hard rock
- 7:34Speaker 4: Steiner Rocks skate Park called Sandy's Metal hard rock metal.
- 7:37Speaker 3: There's a lot of influences.
- 7:39Speaker 4: But back at the beginning, how much charl and Err
- 7:41Speaker 4: did it take to come up with the sound that
- 7:43Speaker 4: you guys are happy with?
- 7:46Speaker 1: Honestly? Like that guitar tone was kind of just uh.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Chad and I especially were like fans of like fu
- 7:56Speaker 2: Man Shue and kind of kias desert rocky guitar our tones,
- 8:01Speaker 2: and we're just trying to kind of get that.
- 8:04Speaker 1: And it just ended up being the sound we have now.
- 8:08Speaker 1: And but yeah, we we tend to be fans.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Of bands that don't can't really you can't, you can't
- 8:17Speaker 2: classify them, you know, like Ween and Frank Zappa and
- 8:22Speaker 2: you know, bands like that like have always been really
- 8:29Speaker 2: like bands that were fans of queens of the Stone Age,
- 8:33Speaker 2: bands that don't really fit into a category, you know.
- 8:39Speaker 1: So I guess that kind of rubs off on us.
- 8:41Speaker 4: How about in the creative process probably, like how do
- 8:44Speaker 4: you know when you go on too far in one
- 8:45Speaker 4: direction or not far enough in another?
- 8:47Speaker 3: Like, is there have you got a parameter that you
- 8:49Speaker 3: gauge things on.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Not really, we don't really put too much thought into that.
- 8:55Speaker 2: We kind of just we just kind of go with
- 8:58Speaker 2: it and what sounds good sounds good, and we're not
- 9:01Speaker 2: really thinking of any genres or you know, trying to
- 9:05Speaker 2: make it sound a certain way. Like it just happens
- 9:08Speaker 2: the way it happens, I guess, especially with this new
- 9:11Speaker 2: stuff coming out, Uh, it's all over the place. I
- 9:14Speaker 2: mean there's there's songs that sound like you know it's
- 9:21Speaker 2: there's songs that's that sound like doom metal.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Then there's songs that sound.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Like the Breakfast Club soundtrack. Then there's songs that sound
- 9:30Speaker 2: like Talking Heads or something.
- 9:31Speaker 1: I don't know. We really went all over the map
- 9:34Speaker 1: with the new the new stuff that you'll be hearing
- 9:37Speaker 1: this year.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Is that that the new album you reason to Dream?
- 9:43Speaker 1: I don't know if that's the title of it still.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Honestly, uh, we kind of. We've had like three different.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Titles so far, and it's probably gonna change again. I'm
- 9:52Speaker 1: sure we can't make up our minds on anything.
- 9:58Speaker 3: You come to Australia.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely, we're gonna release probably song by song.
- 10:05Speaker 2: And then it'll it'll morph into either an EP or
- 10:08Speaker 2: an album. I'm guessing it seems like people's attention spans
- 10:12Speaker 2: to listen to forty minutes of music these days is
- 10:15Speaker 2: kind of a challenge.
- 10:16Speaker 1: You know.
- 10:17Speaker 2: I have teenagers, so I see you know, you're lucky
- 10:20Speaker 2: if they can make it through a four minute song
- 10:22Speaker 2: without changing it to something else.
- 10:25Speaker 4: I've got a nine to eleven year old and they'd
- 10:26Speaker 4: change it five times before they get to the end
- 10:28Speaker 4: of the song, and it's frustrating.
- 10:30Speaker 1: It drives me nuts.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Before I let you go, bro, I've got a new
- 10:36Speaker 4: segment that I'll introduced called fighter Ball. And so I've
- 10:39Speaker 4: gone through the social media and I've come up with
- 10:41Speaker 4: a couple of photos I.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Want to know a little bit more about.
- 10:43Speaker 4: So Okay, the first one is this one, like that
- 10:47Speaker 4: doesn't look like a very good time bry ha.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:51Speaker 2: I think that was on Warped Tour and our buss
- 10:54Speaker 2: kept breaking because you know, we'd be driving through the
- 10:57Speaker 2: desert and it's one hundred and ten degrees and no
- 10:59Speaker 2: bus can survive that.
- 11:04Speaker 3: Sort of fantom.
- 11:04Speaker 4: My bage, because we don't drive between gigs that often,
- 11:07Speaker 4: but you guys do it a lot, like just does.
- 11:08Speaker 3: It happen the cross breaks down or is it?
- 11:11Speaker 2: Is it a rarity in the summertime if you're driving
- 11:14Speaker 2: through the desert, you try to do it at night
- 11:16Speaker 2: because otherwise you're looking at problems.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Even if you're in like a new bus, it could overheat,
- 11:21Speaker 1: you know that.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Second, on, my god, that one didn't look like a
- 11:27Speaker 4: very good time. But this one looks like it was
- 11:29Speaker 4: a great time.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that was in I want to.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Say that was in Japan when we were playing shows
- 11:37Speaker 2: with in Flames. That was the only time we've ever
- 11:40Speaker 2: been to Japan, but uh yeah, man, it was the blast.
- 11:43Speaker 1: I'd love to go back there, and.
- 11:45Speaker 4: Such a cool place, like everything so cheap over there,
- 11:48Speaker 4: that food, the alcohol is just a beautiful place.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Definitely. Yeah, I'd love to get back their asap.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Did you get stuck into the saki when you're over there?
- 11:57Speaker 1: Oh yeah really did?
- 11:59Speaker 2: Two was Osaka and Tokyo, but yeah, the days off
- 12:04Speaker 2: we had a blast.
- 12:05Speaker 4: As you can see, ny Air is better than anywhere
- 12:08Speaker 4: else in the course because it comes home.
- 12:09Speaker 1: That's amazing. And their whiskey is really good too.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Everything was named.
- 12:14Speaker 4: The fact that they start to show it like you
- 12:16Speaker 4: feel told is right. Yeah, you know what Jas, Thanks
- 12:22Speaker 4: you Tom about being the plasure speaking with you.
- 12:24Speaker 3: You guys to be out here in January
