- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the You Gone Football Coaches Show on lear Field,
- 0:03Speaker 1: Jim Morrill with us a little bit later on we're
- 0:05Speaker 1: gonna talk to a couple of the players camp Chadwick
- 0:07Speaker 1: and the tight end Alex Honig and coach. Last year,
- 0:11Speaker 1: his season ended way too soon by injury. And now
- 0:16Speaker 1: it really looks like the tight ends are becoming a
- 0:19Speaker 1: factor for Yukon's offense. And I'd love tight ends. I
- 0:23Speaker 1: mean it grew up a Giant fan, so I'm Mark
- 0:25Speaker 1: Bavarro crazy among others. But you know how it is
- 0:30Speaker 1: when those guys, and it's prominent in the NFL these days.
- 0:34Speaker 1: If you've got a good tight end, you've got a
- 0:35Speaker 1: pretty good football team. But why is that important in
- 0:38Speaker 1: your mind to get your tight ends involved? Obviously they're
- 0:41Speaker 1: blocking people, but to get them on pass patterns and
- 0:45Speaker 1: making catches.
- 0:47Speaker 2: I've always felt like tight ends are the ultimate mismatch.
- 0:50Speaker 2: You know, when you have a big, athletic tight end,
- 0:52Speaker 2: they can go up and catch the ball. You really
- 0:56Speaker 2: have to figure out the best way to handle that
- 1:00Speaker 2: defensive team and still be sound against the run.
- 1:03Speaker 3: But they're a matchup problem.
- 1:04Speaker 2: You know, if you put a linebacker on them at times,
- 1:07Speaker 2: you know, they can out athlete the linebacker. If you
- 1:09Speaker 2: put a defensive back on him, they can outsize and
- 1:12Speaker 2: out physical the defensive back. Very much like with Justin
- 1:16Speaker 2: Jolie last year. The way we're able to use him
- 1:18Speaker 2: and get him out in the slot and create mismatches.
- 1:21Speaker 2: And now you're seeing, you know, Alex come on this
- 1:24Speaker 2: this week and it was great because it was exactly
- 1:26Speaker 2: three hundred and sixty five days since he got hurt
- 1:28Speaker 2: last year that he scored a touchdown. It was also
- 1:31Speaker 2: great that his mom and his dad and his brother
- 1:34Speaker 2: were in from Germany to see the game. Oh great, Yeah,
- 1:38Speaker 2: I mean it was just like you know, it was
- 1:41Speaker 2: like a storybook for him, and everyone just appreciated what
- 1:45Speaker 2: a great family he's got. But you want to get
- 1:48Speaker 2: those guys involved, You want to put them in different positions.
- 1:50Speaker 2: You know, we've seen what Lewis Hansen can do. You know,
- 1:54Speaker 2: out in space, he can play some fullback. You can
- 1:56Speaker 2: pay him on the line tight end, you can win
- 1:57Speaker 2: him in the slot. Now we're working in our chief
- 2:00Speaker 2: Churcher more and more. He's a six foot seven, two
- 2:03Speaker 2: hundred and seventy five pound guy that we thought.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Initially he might be you know, moved offensive tackle.
- 2:08Speaker 2: But now you're seeing athleticism and hands and he's going
- 2:11Speaker 2: to keep working on his speed. But he's a guy
- 2:13Speaker 2: that we're going to keep working into the game. And
- 2:15Speaker 2: having Nick Harris back finally that helps is another six
- 2:17Speaker 2: foot six, two hundred and fifty pound guy who has
- 2:20Speaker 2: good hands. So you know, I like tight ends just
- 2:23Speaker 2: like you tight ends like like tight ends. When I
- 2:25Speaker 2: was a teams according to the NFL, going against the
- 2:27Speaker 2: Tony Gonzalezes and the you know, the Gronks.
- 2:30Speaker 3: And those guys. I mean, it was cues man.
- 2:33Speaker 2: It was a challenge every week to figure out, how
- 2:35Speaker 2: are we going to handle this guy right here? He's
- 2:37Speaker 2: a problem, and you want to have some of those
- 2:40Speaker 2: problems on your offense.
- 2:42Speaker 1: It's funny you're saying that use the word mismatch, because
- 2:44Speaker 1: last night I'm watching Peyton Manning and Eli Manning talking
- 2:48Speaker 1: to Bill Belichick about it, and that's exactly what he said.
- 2:51Speaker 1: He goes, you know this, this tight end for San Francisco,
- 2:56Speaker 1: this guy's a mismatch problem, and you know he's being
- 2:59Speaker 1: a differentsive guy himself looks at that every week when
- 3:03Speaker 1: he was coaching as a head coach looking at that
- 3:05Speaker 1: every week saying the same thing. You're saying that, what
- 3:08Speaker 1: are we going to do with this guy? We cannot
- 3:09Speaker 1: let him, you know, break the game open on us.
- 3:12Speaker 3: No, that's that's what you want. You want to on offense.
- 3:16Speaker 2: It's all about trying to create matchup problems, and tight
- 3:20Speaker 2: ends are the ultimate guys to do that. Guys like
- 3:22Speaker 2: you know, you mentioned mel Brown, Guys like that. You
- 3:25Speaker 2: put them out in the slot, you get a linebacker
- 3:27Speaker 2: on him and coverage. You know, that can be a
- 3:29Speaker 2: mismatch problem. So you're always trying to create matchups that
- 3:33Speaker 2: are advantageous for you offensively.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Well, if you go on the road this week, it's
- 3:39Speaker 1: a night game, you know, technically six o'clock kind of
- 3:43Speaker 1: a late afternoon, early night game. So it's kind of strange.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I was thinking about this today. You're going to play
- 3:49Speaker 1: part of the game in daylight and then part of
- 3:51Speaker 1: the game it's under the lights. Is there any adjustments
- 3:54Speaker 1: that have to happen for the players and that or
- 3:56Speaker 1: or is it just all the same.
- 3:58Speaker 3: It's all the same, it really is.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I think if you start focusing on those things, you're
- 4:04Speaker 2: focusing on the wrong things. It's not even something that
- 4:07Speaker 2: will address I mean, these guys have been doing it
- 4:09Speaker 2: since they started playing ball. They probably played hundreds of
- 4:12Speaker 2: games where, you know, the first half was light and
- 4:15Speaker 2: the second half was dark, and sometimes they didn't even
- 4:18Speaker 2: have lights, you know, where they were out on the
- 4:20Speaker 2: street playing under the street lights. So we're not going
- 4:23Speaker 2: to make it a big deal. It's it's I've shoot,
- 4:25Speaker 2: I haven't even thought of it until you brought it
- 4:27Speaker 2: up right there.
- 4:28Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, that's, uh, street lights, that's something I
- 4:33Speaker 1: can relate to.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah, you and I we used to plan in the
- 4:35Speaker 2: street lights. I don't know if these kids playing in
- 4:37Speaker 2: the street lights anymore.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know about that.
- 4:40Speaker 3: That's good. They're in playing Madden now, yeah.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Oh god. Now we used to run around on the
- 4:45Speaker 1: streets and my mother couldn't even find us.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Like where are They're there?
- 4:49Speaker 1: And they're down the street, they're around the corner or whatever.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Yeah, that was okay.
- 4:54Speaker 1: So playing a duke now, this is an acc team
- 4:57Speaker 1: power for conference. They're undefeated. What's the approach in your
- 5:03Speaker 1: in your estimation of importance of this particular game when
- 5:08Speaker 1: you talk to the team.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Well, my approach, Mike has always been one of consistency,
- 5:16Speaker 2: which is every game carries the same way. You know,
- 5:19Speaker 2: at the end of the end of the season, a
- 5:21Speaker 2: wins wins, the loss of loss, regardless of who's against.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I mean, that's that's the approach that you try to
- 5:26Speaker 2: take and I think that that gives you.
- 5:28Speaker 3: A chance to be consistent.
- 5:29Speaker 2: However, let's not kid ourselves, right, it's human nature. When
- 5:35Speaker 2: you're playing a team like Duke that took it to
- 5:37Speaker 2: you hard last week, that's in the acc that you
- 5:41Speaker 2: know doesn't seem to think Yukon's worthy of being in
- 5:43Speaker 2: their conference, that it it. You know, those things right
- 5:50Speaker 2: and if but that should never be your motivation. Now,
- 5:54Speaker 2: that should never be your motivation. Your motivation always should
- 5:57Speaker 2: be to play the very best football you can play,
- 6:00Speaker 2: put yourself in a position to win and find a
- 6:02Speaker 2: way to win. And so that's what we focus on.
- 6:05Speaker 2: But you have to be realistic. There's always a little
- 6:08Speaker 2: bit more in there for us. Now for them, I
- 6:11Speaker 2: don't know what they think, but you know, I know
- 6:14Speaker 2: this is that we had a good practice today. I
- 6:16Speaker 2: believe that we had a good practice because our guys
- 6:18Speaker 2: are excited that they saw the potential of what they
- 6:21Speaker 2: can become if they work hard, you know, displayed on
- 6:24Speaker 2: the field on Saturday.
- 6:25Speaker 3: And I would say that in there a little bit.
- 6:27Speaker 2: It's probably. Hey, you know, we're a group of five team.
- 6:30Speaker 2: We're playing an acc team in Duke that took it
- 6:32Speaker 2: to us. I think it was forty one seven last year.
- 6:35Speaker 2: You know, let's see, let's see if we've made any improvements.
- 6:37Speaker 2: You know, we know they're a damn good team. We
- 6:39Speaker 2: know they're a damn good team. We got great respect
- 6:41Speaker 2: for them. I know Many Diaz is that one hell
- 6:45Speaker 2: of a football coach. I mean, he's a defensive mastermind.
- 6:48Speaker 3: You know.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I know their quarterback went to Sarah High School, you know,
- 6:53Speaker 2: in California, the school that I've spent a ton of
- 6:56Speaker 2: time at recruiting great athletes, and I know he's one
- 6:59Speaker 2: hell of a play you know, and highly recruited and
- 7:02Speaker 2: went to Texas.
- 7:02Speaker 3: And have great respect for them.
- 7:05Speaker 2: You know, I know their receivers are you know, Jordan
- 7:08Speaker 2: Moore has already got eighteen catches for two hundred and.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Thirty three yards in two games.
- 7:12Speaker 2: You know, so we know they're a damn good football team.
- 7:16Speaker 3: But we just got to go out and play.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's almost like a season for some people.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Eighteen catches in two weeks. Oh my goodness. All right,
- 7:23Speaker 1: we'll talk a little bit more about Duke. I got
- 7:25Speaker 1: one more segment with coach and then we talked to
- 7:27Speaker 1: a couple of players here on the Yukon Football Coaches
- 7:30Speaker 1: Show on lear Field.
