- 0:02Bad bosses I've I've been lucky and I've had a lot of really
- 0:04good ones. I've had some bad ones.
- 0:08Yeah, but I I mean in my career. Since I'm only your career,
- 0:11yeah. My 43 years of working, I
- 0:14started at 14. If you want to go down to
- 0:16volunteering my time at 12 years old in Safety Town and Girl
- 0:19Scouts camp, well it was a Girl Scouts camp that let you go.
- 0:25My brothers go in and I, I went in was a a mentor with them, you
- 0:30know, and we have the the we had, you know, doing this since
- 0:37I was 12 years old. So it's one of those things that
- 0:40you just never know what's going to happen.
- 0:42And I've had some pretty good luck with bosses.
- 0:44So thank God that that I've had that.
- 0:47And I will tell you, one of the things that I enjoyed was having
- 0:59bosses that respected me but didn't expect me to do things
- 1:06that I couldn't do. So they were very nice with me
- 1:09on that aspect, you know, and I built a relationship with them
- 1:14and I was able to to go out and build myself up because of the
- 1:24bosses that I had. And that's what I want to talk
- 1:27about today. So let's talk about that in our
- 1:29statement called the Burning Question.
- 1:41Today's burning question is what is managing up?
- 1:46Is it A doing your boss's job for them?
- 1:49Maybe it's B manipulating your boss to get what you want.
- 1:53Could it be C proactively building a productive
- 1:57partnership with your boss? Or is it D complaining to your
- 2:01boss about problems? Let's kick it back to the Murph
- 2:04man and Connor to see what the answer is.
- 2:08Well, before we get to the burning question answer, veteran
- 2:12Sock said. Depends on if the boss is hot.
- 2:16No, it doesn't. Doesn't matter how attractive he
- 2:19is, I'm not going to do anything with.
- 2:23Him. Wow.
- 2:23Yeah, so we talked about the burning question.
- 2:27Doing the boss's job right. The best way to ask is what is
- 2:32managing up doing your boss's job for them?
- 2:34Manipulating your bosses to get what?
- 2:47Hello. Are we good?
- 2:49Yeah. OK.
- 2:50I'm I'm in. We're good.
- 2:52OK, sorry. So it's because you weren't on
- 2:57on stage, that's why, OK. I wasn't that stage.
- 3:02I don't. Know OK.
- 3:06So now we're good. So I was good.
- 3:08I was moving the script and then it touched the touchpad on the
- 3:13computer and swiped out. I see what you're saying.
- 3:18OK, yes. So what do you think the answer
- 3:21is? I think it's CC.
- 3:25Proactively building a productive partnership with your
- 3:27boss? Yes, I, I agree with that.
- 3:30It's one of those things that you, you want to have a
- 3:33relationship with your boss. You want to be with them and
- 3:35talking to them and seeing what's, what's going on, right.
- 3:41I've had relationships with my bosses.
- 3:43When I was in the Army, I was lower enlisted and I worked with
- 3:46captains majors, Lieutenant colonel's on, on the regular.
- 3:50And there was one time, I think it's so funny was when we were
- 3:53in Somalia, we were in the back of a truck and we're driving
- 3:54around and we get we're surrounded by buildings and
- 3:58there's people poking their heads on like Dan Ayerson in the
- 3:59American before we were lost as hell to the person driving.
- 4:02I was going to kill him. By the way, that was Justin
- 4:04negligence father. I was ready to kill him.
- 4:06Literally, Not figuratively, literally.
- 4:10And anyway, I'm in the back of the truck with a social worker,
- 4:16all right? Just a straight up social
- 4:17worker. He's an officer and they gave us
- 4:20rifles. He didn't have a pistol like
- 4:21he's trained on. He's like I said, get your rifle
- 4:24lock and load, blah, blah. Get ready to shoot.
- 4:26He's like, I don't even know how to use this.
- 4:28I don't care right now. Just God damn, get ready to
- 4:30shoot. You know, it wasn't about rank
- 4:34with anyone I've ever worked with.
- 4:36It was we had respect for each other that we could talk like
- 4:38that to each other, you know, and I, I was able to enjoy doing
- 4:44that because as we talked about this with other people, a lot of
- 4:49things happened and we talked to the officers and, you know, I
- 4:56took it upon myself to train a lot of the officer.
- 4:59I told you. Like, one thing I was really
- 5:00good at was all the social skills.
- 5:01Even though I was medical personnel, my soldier skills
- 5:05were awesome to the point where like in training at NTCI told
- 5:09you I killed the tank. Yeah.
- 5:10Yeah, because I know how to fire the weapons, you know, it's.
- 5:13Yeah, that's that's how it works.
- 5:16Well, when you're medical, your job is to save people, So it's
- 5:19more focused on saving lives and taking them.
- 5:22But I told myself, I don't know wherever I'm going to be, I
- 5:25might need to do things like that.
- 5:26So I learned how to do things in in training.
- 5:28The guy next to me was quote UN quote wounded and he hands me
- 5:33this weapon. It says kill the tank.
- 5:34So I did, you know, and to me, it's just to me, it was a lot of
- 5:41fun. I really enjoyed the military
- 5:42and I wish I would have stayed in, but my marriage couldn't
- 5:46handle any more divorce separations.
- 5:49And eventually we got divorced anyway, so just stayed in.
- 5:53It sucks, right? A little bit.
- 5:56Yeah, a little bit. Four years later and it all went
- 5:59to hell in a handbasket. You know, it's, it's one of
- 6:03those things that you can't really explain to people who
- 6:10haven't been part of it. It's, you know, you say, oh,
- 6:14well, you know, yeah, you you want to save your marriage and
- 6:17everything. It's not always that easy.
- 6:20It's not always that easy, you know.
- 6:22And as we do this, I want you guys to think about that and how
- 6:28you relationship with your boss stacks up.
- 6:29And we're going to talk about today's hot take.
- 6:43Today's hot take is this Your boss is not your parent, your
- 6:48friend, or your therapist. They are your most important
- 6:51customer. Managing up is the strategic
- 6:55practice of making their job easier so they can in turn
- 6:59advocate for your success without feeling obligated.
- 7:03Let's see how the Murph man has helped his boss's lives get
- 7:06easier and in some cases, Carter.
- 7:12Why did I say harder? Because I'm a pain in the butt,
- 7:15right? But your boss is not your
- 7:18parent, your friend, or your therapist.
- 7:20They are your boss. They're going to tell you what
- 7:22you need to do, what you need to change, and you need to do it.
- 7:28That's the bottom line, right? But Managing Up talks about the
- 7:31strategic practice of making their job easier so that they
- 7:36can in turn, advocate for your success without feeling
- 7:39obligated. You know, when you do something
- 7:43for somebody, they're more apt to help you.
- 7:47You know, one of the things, if you ever want anyone to help
- 7:50you, the first thing you have to do is help them.
- 7:53OK? Stephen Covey, one of the habits
- 7:57that we talked about, the seven habits of highly affected
- 7:58people, he talks about the emotional Piggy Bank, emotional
- 8:04bank account. You can't take out of your bank
- 8:08unless you put money in first, right?
- 8:11OK, Same way with a relationship.
- 8:13You have to put the money in, you have to put the effort in,
- 8:15you have to put everything in before you try to take anything
- 8:18out. And there's relationships that
- 8:20I've talked to you about them in my life where people are just
- 8:24taking, taking, taking, not giving anything.
- 8:27At some point I just say, OK, that I'm done with you, right?
- 8:31Yeah. I'm done that.
- 8:32That's it. I'm done.
- 8:34And before you know it, it happens.
- 8:37I I get them out of my life and my life gets easier, right.
- 8:41Yeah. You know, So you're not there to
- 8:44be friends with your boss, but when you need them to advocate
- 8:47for you, they are there. Right.
- 8:51Yeah. Out to the point where I'll,
- 8:53I'll give you the example of when your mom passed away, I, I
- 8:57just couldn't be a counselor anymore.
- 8:59I just, I couldn't for three months.
- 9:01I was working my butt because I had lost a lot of time because
- 9:04she was sick in the hospital and everything.
- 9:05And I was trying to make up all that time.
- 9:06And there was one day that I was driving back at 8:00 at night
- 9:11from payments and I had to pick you up at daycare at 8:00.
- 9:13I was going to be about 15 minutes late, maybe 20 minutes.
- 9:16I called the daycare and tell them I'm sorry, I I got late.
- 9:19You know, they're ready to go home.
- 9:21Yeah. And it didn't happen often.
- 9:23We made that very clear. So.
- 9:23It was like 2 times probably. Yeah, but as I was driving, I'm
- 9:28like, you were nine years old at daycare, your mom died three
- 9:32months ago, and I'm out here working my butt off for what?
- 9:38For money, the job. Well, I know that now, but
- 9:41that's not the point. I asked to be released from
- 9:46work, and my boss talked to my CEO and got me a severance plan,
- 9:53a small little package of funds that I was able to use.
- 9:58They paid for my vacation. They gave me an extra month's
- 10:00salary. And they let me go, no questions
- 10:02asked. Really.
- 10:04And it it ruined our lives for a while.
- 10:07I'm not going to lie. You know, I lost my job.
- 10:09I ended up losing the car, end up losing the house.
- 10:12You know, it is what it is. And I told you I'm back, baby,
- 10:16Right? Yeah.
- 10:17Yeah. But I could not do counseling
- 10:21anymore. And my boss understood that.
- 10:24She gave me the time I needed to be with my wife.
- 10:26She gave me the time I needed to try to make up when I knew I was
- 10:28going to make it. I cut my losses.
- 10:30She let go of me. And it wasn't a horrible thing.
- 10:32You know what I mean? Yeah.
- 10:34It was like she understood the situation and she helped me.
- 10:38So having that relationship with your boss sometimes helps in
- 10:41ways you cannot ever imagine. But I'll tell you, we're going
- 10:44to take a quick break. And when we come back, we're
- 10:46going to talk about the different terms that we're going
- 10:48to be using in today's episode in our segment called Laying
- 10:50Down the Colds. Stay tuned.
- 10:52It's time for a break. Hot takes with the Murph man
- 10:54will return. After these messages.

- 14:28that video by Ryan Spencer made such an impact on my life.
- 14:34I wouldn't say my life. It's not like I was suicidal or
- 14:36nothing, but I advocate for suicide awareness every time I
- 14:41have this show. It doesn't matter if you're a
- 14:44veteran or not. 988 press 1. Someone's there at 375, 3652473,

- 14:58And someone's always there to listen to you, so call them if
- 15:02you need help, 988 press 1, and they will help you.
- 15:06But Ryan Spencer, I got to tell you, is a really cool guy.
- 15:09And I'm hoping one day I can take the time and actually
- 15:13interview all of these people that I have on the show as far
- 15:15as music, because I really, truly love some of these artists
- 15:20that we have. And I'm trying to play more
- 15:22artists. I don't know if you noticed,
- 15:23I've been trying to change the videos up.
- 15:24Yeah. But we'll talk about that on our
- 15:26next break. So let's get to the laying down
- 15:29the coals and talking about our terms for today.
- 15:40Before we dig into today's show, let's clarify some of the key
- 15:43terms we'll be using today while laying down the coals.
- 15:47Managing up the process of consciously working with your
- 15:51superior to obtain the best possible results for you, your
- 15:55manager, and the organization. Communication styles.
- 15:59Understanding whether your boss prefers quick updates via Slack,
- 16:03formal weekly emails, or in person.
- 16:05Check. Insurance.
- 16:07Proactive support. Anticipating your manager's
- 16:10needs and offering solutions before they have to ask all.
- 16:16Right, so managing up the process of consciously working
- 16:21with your superior to obtain the best possible results.
- 16:25Communication styles. Understanding whether you boss
- 16:27prefers quick updates to be a Slack formal weekly emails or in
- 16:31person check. Insurance and productive
- 16:33support. Anticipating your manager's
- 16:35needs and offering solutions before they ask.
- 16:39Let's talk about those real quick one by one.
- 16:42When you have a boss that is busy, 90 to 95% of their time is
- 16:48spent managing employee issues. You don't want to be part of
- 16:53that, right? With every boss I've had, I have
- 16:59a great relationship with them. But I can walk in, say you got a
- 17:03SEC and they know it's more than a SEC because they know me and I
- 17:08can sit there and I can talk to them about an issue real quick.
- 17:11And we, we coming out. And what's the thing?
- 17:12I always told you, when you have a problem, you have to come with
- 17:14a solution. Very good.
- 17:16So I walk in and here's what I want to do.
- 17:18What do you think? And, you know, they'll say yes,
- 17:22no, maybe so. Whatever, right?
- 17:26But there's been times where I've walked in with bosses.
- 17:31And I said, I am up to here with whatever's happening.
- 17:37I cannot do this. I said something's gonna,
- 17:40something needs to change, you know, and they'll tell me, well,
- 17:47tough. I'm like, OK, yeah, that's the
- 17:50way it is, all right? But at least they heard me out,
- 17:52right? Yeah.
- 17:56I had one boss that I, I had, I told you guys about it before
- 17:59that I didn't like him. I, he was a jerk with me.
- 18:02And one day he really set me off.
- 18:04He triggered me. I went into my principal's
- 18:07office and said, can I just sit in here before I kill somebody?
- 18:10And she says, sure, walked out of the office.
- 18:14She knew what it was. She walked out of the office and
- 18:16just let me stay there until I chilled out, you know?
- 18:19And again, we go back to that relationship with the boss,
- 18:22right? You know, And if I'm wrong,
- 18:25that's another thing. The hardest thing is to welcome
- 18:28to someone and say we have a problem.
- 18:29We need to talk about it. I really believe that if you sit
- 18:33there and you talk to someone, you hash out your problem and
- 18:40you move on. And that's the way it should be,
- 18:43right? You should be able to just walk
- 18:46up and say you're not doing this right.
- 18:49We need to talk about this or I have, I have a concern about the
- 18:51way you're doing this. There's certain phrases you got
- 18:53to use. Of course, you can just walk us.
- 18:54So you're screwing up. But as you sit there, right, and
- 19:00you're talking to your boss and they're talking to you, don't
- 19:03take it personally. You know, with that other boss I
- 19:07told you I hated it was personal because I wasn't the one that
- 19:11saw that, you know? Yeah, Like there was, there was
- 19:13times when I I'd make a meeting that he had to be at and he
- 19:17would blow me off. And then the person I was going
- 19:18to meet with is like, what? What's going on?
- 19:20I'm like, he didn't come. Like, I don't want to tell you.
- 19:23One time I had a boss with the superintendent's public affairs
- 19:29person and he blew them off. And she just hold on.
- 19:34She calls him on his cell phone and says, why don't you at the
- 19:38meeting? And he goes, oh, I I don't care.
- 19:44I need you to drop. What?
- 19:45You didn't come here right now. And then she tells me you can
- 19:49leave. Yeah.
- 19:53You know, sometimes there's always a bigger boss, you know,
- 20:00And also, I don't believe in, like, personal vendettas and
- 20:04stuff like that. Your bosses have a job to do.
- 20:06And if you're not doing it, you need to be talked to.
- 20:09Right. Yeah.
- 20:11And if you're not doing that, then there's next escalations.
- 20:15You have to move up and everything.
- 20:16So think about that as we as we talk about this, because it's
- 20:20not just good religion with your boss, it's also how to deal with
- 20:24bats. And that's why we go get to the
- 20:25communications titles. How do you communicate with your
- 20:28boss? Do you drop in for one second
- 20:30and say, hey, just a quick check in every day, right.
- 20:35Or every time I go to the office, I walk in, see her.
- 20:37Hey, I'm here. Anything going on that you need
- 20:39to talk to me about? No.
- 20:41Anything. No, I don't have anything.
- 20:42All right, See you later. Go out and do my thing.
- 20:47When there was something, if she need me to come into the office,
- 20:50she'd call me and say, hey, Sean, I need to come into the
- 20:51office. OK.
- 20:54There was one time I want you to think about this.
- 20:56We were in. We got a state grant to run the
- 20:59runaway shelter, Right? And I was a counselor.
- 21:04One day she's at the office and the FBI shows up looking for me
- 21:09and she's like my secretary. She's a person.
- 21:11Let me call my boss. Cause the boss, the boss comes
- 21:13over. What's going on?
- 21:14I'm looking for Sean Murphy. And she says, let me see where
- 21:18he's at. Let me call him.
- 21:19She calls me and she's like, Sean, the FBI is here to see
- 21:21you. I'm like, Oh yeah, I'm, I'm
- 21:23already on my way there early. Sean, when the FBI comes to the
- 21:26building, you need to let me know these things.
- 21:29Well, I was actually a witness in a, in a attack on the cop,
- 21:33and I was the star witness and the FBI interviewed me and
- 21:35everything. That's all it was.
- 21:37It wasn't anything bad. There was another time that the
- 21:42FBI came to the building because we had a father, one of the kids
- 21:47who was wanted by Interpol. Seriously, like they were on the
- 21:52run and the kid ran away from the father, came to the runaway
- 21:54shelter and got the father arrested.
- 21:58And she says my dad's wanted by Interpol.
- 22:01Yeah. So FBI has been around a lot.
- 22:04You know, in my life, there's this one time I had a kid who
- 22:07came in and he talked about his dad flushed 4 bricks of
- 22:12marijuana. Do you know what a brick is?
- 22:14Yeah, right. They're not little bricks,
- 22:15right? Yeah.
- 22:16Good. Size 4 bricks of marijuana that
- 22:19he was supposed to sell. And he flushes down the toilet
- 22:22and the kid was like, they're going to kill me.
- 22:24And he wasn't joking. He wasn't joking.
- 22:28His father didn't understand that.
- 22:31And they eventually went into Whitsec to where what sick
- 22:36witness security, you know, like where they get a new identity
- 22:39and leave town there. Yeah.
- 22:40Yeah. Because it was turns out it was
- 22:41like a huge bust. FBI involved, DEA.
- 22:46It was it was crazy. Oh.
- 22:48Wow. And you know, when I would
- 22:52actually go to these meetings, like I had meetings with certain
- 22:56organizations, they would be talking to me like I was one of
- 23:01them. They they'd share information
- 23:03with me because they knew I wouldn't share information.
- 23:05They told me things. They give me a little bit
- 23:07background story in the situation.
- 23:08They give me a lot more detail than they probably should have.
- 23:11But that's because of how I communicate with people, Right?
- 23:15Yeah. And last but not least,
- 23:16practical support, anticipating your manager's needs.
- 23:18Well, if you know on Friday morning that your boss likes
- 23:24coffee, right? And we have a meeting on Friday
- 23:29morning. If you're if you're working at
- 23:32the shelter that day, you turn a pot of coffee on.
- 23:35That takes nothing, right? If you go to the meeting and
- 23:40your boss is gonna say I need to know how many clients they have,
- 23:43how often are you seeing them? What's your expected numbers for
- 23:45the month? Whatever, right?
- 23:47Yeah. You can't go.
- 23:47Oh, hold on. Let me.
- 23:50Let me, let me, let me. You already know what the
- 23:53meeting's about. You should go in there prepared,
- 23:55right? I was watching TikTok the other
- 23:58day and there's ACEO that talks about my first job in an
- 24:01interview is tell me about the company that you know, tell me
- 24:06about my company. Why would he do that?
- 24:12Tired. I don't know understand.
- 24:14If you want to work for me. You can understand what you're
- 24:17working for. Yeah.
- 24:19You want to know what it entails, right?
- 24:22Yeah. When I went to the the job
- 24:24interview at the at the runway shelter the first time, actually
- 24:29transitional center next door, the boss asked me, have you ever
- 24:33heard of this place? And I said, yeah.
- 24:37I said when I was 16 years old, I got in the car with some girls
- 24:42that we met and turns out the car was stolen and they drove it
- 24:44here. And they're like, you can take
- 24:46the car if you want. And we're like, no.
- 24:49And we left And she laughed. And she says you don't know how
- 24:53many times that has happened. Oh wow.
- 24:56Because these are people with issues, right?
- 24:59But that was my interview. She's like, what do you know
- 25:01about this place? I'm like, I, I know, I know the
- 25:03basic programs, but let me tell you a personal story.
- 25:07And I told her because it wasn't my fault.
- 25:08I was 16. I didn't know the car was
- 25:09stolen. But yeah, it just that question
- 25:16of why do you want to work here is one thing, but tell me about
- 25:19the company. What about the company makes you
- 25:21want to work here? You can't be like, oh, it's a
- 25:23good company because the people are nice and the company has
- 25:27right. Like, for example, when you went
- 25:29to your job at the theaters, you already knew what the theaters
- 25:32were. You already knew everything,
- 25:33right? Yeah.
- 25:34But if I was the boss, I would have asked you what makes you
- 25:36want to work for us. Popcorn.
- 25:39And that that's that's fair, right?
- 25:46But, you know, you're, you're 16.
- 25:48You don't have any idea what your job's going to be.
- 25:52Yeah. Like, I come to the movies here
- 25:53and people seem pretty cool and I think it'd be a fun place to
- 25:55work. Right?
- 25:57You. Know I I said something like
- 25:58that, yeah. You know, and then it was funny
- 26:01because you had a resume. Remember that?
- 26:03Yeah. And your boss was like, you have
- 26:04a resume and you're like, yeah, you had never worked before, but
- 26:10you had a lot of skills on there from your football team for your
- 26:12managing, from everything, right?
- 26:13Yeah. So little, little things like
- 26:18that throughout your whole career, whenever you're talking
- 26:21to your bosses and you're sitting there and you're, you're
- 26:23looking for a job or you're trying to change jobs or you're
- 26:28trying to do something different, excuse me, you're
- 26:32trying to do something different.
- 26:34Those little things matter in the long run because it's our
- 26:38first impression sometimes that that makes a big difference.
- 26:41And I told you, I walked out of a job interview one time where
- 26:44the person said their first answer, it was first question to
- 26:48me. The official, official question
- 26:50of the interview was, have you ever been told you gossip too
- 26:52much? And I said, you know, if you
- 26:58have a problem with gossip here and you're trying to find out if
- 27:02someone's a gossiper, that's not how you do it.
- 27:06I said, but that tells me I don't want to work for you.
- 27:09I said thank you for taking the time to see me today.
- 27:11And I got up and walked out like it was like, within two minutes.
- 27:15And yeah, they're just, you know, there's some places you
- 27:19got to get to act fast. You got to fire quickly.
- 27:22You got to get out quickly when you see something wrong.
- 27:25You know, I'll tell you what. Let me tell you a story about
- 27:27Chris because I tell people hearing a different story from a
- 27:31different point of view is important.
- 27:33So let's talk about Chris real quick in our segment called
- 27:35Story from the Fire. In today's story from the Fire,
- 27:47an employee, Chris, waits for his manager to assign him tasks
- 27:51and only speaks up when there's a problem.
- 27:54His colleague Alex, schedules a brief weekly check in, learns
- 27:58her boss's top priorities and proactively suggests ways to
- 28:02help. Alex is seen as a leader and is
- 28:05given more responsibility and better projects.
- 28:08That was a story from the fire, Murph.
- 28:11Man, are you feeling the heat? So you have Chris, who waits for
- 28:16someone to assign a, a task when there's a problem, right?
- 28:21Sit back and just wait for something to be told.
- 28:23Alex, on the other hand, is more proactive, schedules a brief
- 28:26weekly check in, learns her boss's top priorities and
- 28:29practically suggests ways to help.
- 28:33When, when we had employees at work that weren't doing their
- 28:35job, you know, I was always giving my boss input, you know,
- 28:40the perspective and she, you know, she counted on me for a
- 28:43lot of things. I was never officially the boss
- 28:46or what not, but everywhere I've gone, I've been that person.
- 28:52The boss can turn to me and say, what do you think we should do
- 28:54in this situation? And I'll say, well, here's what
- 28:58I would do, you know, And it's always something more harsh
- 29:01because I'm a jerk, right? But it gives them the
- 29:06perspective of, well, I don't, I, we don't need to go there
- 29:09yet, Let's do this. But it it gives them a direction
- 29:12of where they want to go, you know?
- 29:14Yeah. If you see a problem and you can
- 29:18fix it, or you have a suggestion to fix it, talk to the boss.
- 29:20The boss might say no that won't work because of X reasons, but
- 29:25it'll give us this idea to do right?
- 29:28Yeah. So you want to have that
- 29:31interaction with your boss, you want to talk about it, and you
- 29:34want to be able to build that relationship so that your
- 29:40opinion does matter. You're not just saying stupid
- 29:42things to be funny or whatever, you know, you're saying things
- 29:45that really matter because it affects you as a team member,
- 29:49right? And for example, if you're the
- 29:51boss, I already told you about 9095% of your time is taking
- 29:54care of employee issues. Where do you want to focus?
- 29:58Do you know what a bell curve is?
- 29:59No, a bell curve is this thing that looks like a bell, right?
- 30:03And the straight centers, the median, the exact center people,
- 30:0750% left, 50% right. And they're up here.
- 30:10And as you go down from 85 percent, right, you go to the
- 30:14top 15% and the top 2% and then the outlier is 1%, meaning good
- 30:20and bad. OK, cuz you're on both sides of
- 30:22the scale. If you're exactly in the center
- 30:28right, you're not good, you're not bad, you're not a problem.
- 30:31Or you're 2 standard deviations out, which means it's, it's
- 30:36further on the, the scale where there's less people.
- 30:39If you were a manager, who would you focus your time?
- 30:42I don't. Know on that person who's in the
- 30:46middle and trying to make them better with the one who's good
- 30:50and you really don't need to do too much for them.
- 30:54Who would you just focus your time?
- 30:57The person that's average, I would say.
- 31:00What if I told you it should be the opposite?
- 31:02On the good. People, yeah, because they're
- 31:05the ones setting the example. They're the ones who are your
- 31:08leaders on the team. And if you work with them, maybe
- 31:13not all the way at that, that two deviations, but you want to
- 31:16talk to the higher team 10, you know, top 15%.
- 31:19Yeah. Because if you work with them,
- 31:21they will get better because that's where they are and other
- 31:26people will be pulled as a team. If you have real true teamwork,
- 31:30you get pulled as a team. Now I can tell you when I worked
- 31:33with MHMR here with Thelma and Candy and I know you never met
- 31:38before. Yeah.
- 31:42We were the thank you. I thought you would since you.
- 31:49Clicked it. I how did I click it?
- 31:52Oh, good mouse. I was like I was.
- 31:55Even. Sorry about that.
- 31:56That's. Funny.
- 31:57So Candy, some and I were the top three producers in the
- 31:59company. Everyone was producing 70 to 80
- 32:02hours. We were producing 103 to 120.
- 32:05OK, OK. The con, the competition with
- 32:08Thelma, Candy and me was so funny because we would be happy
- 32:11with each other by just one, you know what I mean?
- 32:15We were 25% better than the company, right?
- 32:22Between the three of us, we did. What's the math here?
- 32:284 employees work. So technically we were an extra
- 32:32employee among the three of us. That's how much work we were
- 32:35doing. OK, if not 2 employees and the
- 32:42team we were on had six people, right?
- 32:47When our numbers would come out, the other three people would be
- 32:49like, how do you do it? And we'll be like when we do
- 32:51this, this, this, this, this. And then one year, one year, one
- 32:55month we had an employee make 85 hours and almost 90.
- 33:00She was so happy. Like she's like, I got my hours
- 33:02up. I'm like, all right, not do that
- 33:03every month, right? She couldn't keep up the effort.
- 33:09And we were like, how can we help you?
- 33:10Because we, we saw that she wanted to do better.
- 33:13We tried to pull along with us and said, how can we help you,
- 33:17right? Yeah, how can we help you?
- 33:19And it's one of those things that when you talk about this,
- 33:24you you look at it and you say, OK, if you focus on the higher
- 33:29employees, they will do better and they'll pull you in.
- 33:32OK, That's, that's what you want to do.
- 33:38Excuse me. And if you're really working on
- 33:39all of these issues with the lower people, you need to cut
- 33:43them off, get new people because that's.
- 33:46It's not getting anywhere. Yeah.
- 33:48How many? Nobody wants to fire anybody.
- 33:50But how long do you have to go with somebody before you
- 33:53actually get rid of the poison? Right.
- 33:57I'll tell you what. Let's talk about those
- 34:00actionable steps we can take in our segment called the Heat Map.
- 34:12The heat map will show you where to focus your efforts for the
- 34:15most impact. Make it your job to understand
- 34:18your manager's goals, priorities, and pressures.
- 34:22This allows you to align your work with their needs.
- 34:25Ask your manager directly what's the best way for me to keep you
- 34:29updated on my work? This sets clear expectations.
- 34:33When you encounter a problem, bring it to your manager with at
- 34:36least one potential solution. Be a problem solver, not a
- 34:39problem spotter. Let's see how the Murph man and
- 34:43Connor help their bosses. All right, make it your job to
- 34:47understand your manager's goals, priorities, and pressures.
- 34:50It allows you to align your work with their needs.
- 34:53Ask a manager directly What's the best way for me to keep
- 34:57updated on my work and also be a problem solver, not a problem
- 35:03spotter. You know, I'm a problem spotter,
- 35:08but I'm also the problem solver. I see a problem, I bring it up
- 35:12and I talk about it and I, I give suggestions.
- 35:16You know, when you're at work and there's problems and you got
- 35:24to fix it, you got to be proactive and you got to fix it.
- 35:28There was times where I saw something that I could influence
- 35:31and I influenced, I changed it and probably went away.
- 35:34You know, I didn't have to go get approval for nothing.
- 35:40You know, I just I took care of it and a lot of the team I
- 35:43worked with, we're that kind of person.
- 35:44We took care of problems. When we go to my boss and say,
- 35:48Hey, we had a problem with this, she would talk about it and she
- 35:51would say, like, what can we do? What are the options?
- 35:53What can you change? What can you do?
- 35:55So here's what I would like to do.
- 35:56I already have a solution. I told her the solution and I
- 35:59said, I don't know, would that work?
- 36:01And she said no, that because of this and this, but how about we
- 36:03change this and this Fine, I'll do it.
- 36:05And that the afternoon I was doing, you know, have solutions
- 36:15help your boss with that because your different perspective
- 36:18you've seen the the number six right.
- 36:22Yeah. Yeah, you're looking like I'm an
- 36:23idiot. Hold on.
- 36:25If I draw a number six right here between you and me, what
- 36:30number are you going to see? 9.
- 36:33But we're seeing the same exact thing.
- 36:36So perspective changes perception because your bosses
- 36:42up here, they don't really see what they're doing.
- 36:45Right. And one of the stories that I
- 36:46like about in the military, they talk about the ranks.
- 36:48They talk about a field. That's where all the soldiers
- 36:51are. Then they have a fence with one
- 36:52rung. That's your Lieutenant.
- 36:54Second Lieutenant. Yeah.
- 36:55Then you have a fence with two runs.
- 36:57That's your captain. And then you have a Maple Leaf,
- 37:00which is your major, and that's a Maple tree.
- 37:02Then you have the Colonel, which is an oak leaf.
- 37:04And that's a taller tree. Eventually get a Colonel who's a
- 37:07bird higher up and flying around and seeing the whole
- 37:10battlefield, right? And then you have a general in
- 37:13the sky. You know how the as you go up
- 37:17the ladder, you see more, but you also lose touch with the
- 37:19lower people. If you focus on that and you ask
- 37:26yourself, like, what do you do right?
- 37:31If you can bring that perspective to your boss and
- 37:33say, hey, I have this problem, what can we do to fix it?
- 37:37What can we do to change it? What, you know, whatever.
- 37:40And they said, OK, we'll see what we can do.
- 37:43You know, like I had, I didn't have an office where I worked at
- 37:46and I had to like, go to places to eat or restaurants and work
- 37:51on my stuff or go home and work on it, you know, after hours.
- 37:54And it was very difficult. So my boss talked to housing and
- 37:58got me an office at the housing department.
- 38:01And I was able to go over there and I did all those things
- 38:03right. And what's nice about it is I
- 38:06was able to have an office in a community that needed the help,
- 38:12and I had an office to do my work right.
- 38:16Everybody wins. So sometimes when you have a
- 38:20problem and you don't have a solution, you know, but you're
- 38:24trying to solve it, and your boss comes up with an idea, you
- 38:26give them the idea because there's like, you know, where
- 38:29can I be that I can service people but still have an office.
- 38:33I haven't paid for anything. And the Housing Authority pulled
- 38:37through and they took me in and worked with him for about a year
- 38:39and a half or two years. So they need the office.
- 38:42And you know what, one thing that happened there was pretty
- 38:45funny. I'm in my office and there's an
- 38:49officer doing the class or a meeting or something in the
- 38:52other office and I hear his Taser go off and I don't know if
- 38:59you know what time now. I mean, it wasn't the Taser that
- 39:01shot the arrows. It was the the Taser that, you
- 39:05know, it's the little. Isn't it with arrows?
- 39:08No, they take that off and they have a Taser.
- 39:10Oh, so I hear the laser activate and usually what do you hear
- 39:15when cops are reactivating a laser?
- 39:17They they say Taser. And Taser, Taser, Taser.
- 39:20Right. OK.
- 39:21I didn't hear that. I didn't know what was going on.
- 39:24I ran into his office thinking someone was attacking him or
- 39:27something. And he was just showing people
- 39:31how it worked. So one of the kids wanted to see
- 39:33how it worked. And he's like, what are you
- 39:35doing? I'm like, I heard your Taser and
- 39:37I hear any warning. He started laughing.
- 39:39So after the meeting, he goes over to me.
- 39:41He goes, I'm so sorry. He says most people would hear a
- 39:44Taser be like, what's that? I forget who, who's in the
- 39:48office across the hall from me, you know?
- 39:51Yeah. And I'm like, yeah.
- 39:54That's all, honey. And, and one of the things like
- 39:57I tell people I'm not great with weapons or anything.
- 39:59When I was in the army, I was an expert marksman.
- 40:00I would hit 40 out of 40. Again, we go back to soldier
- 40:03skills, right? And that's the reason I love
- 40:05this next song. It's called Adios Amigo by the
- 40:09Alexander, the world's longest sniper shot.
- 40:12Then we're going to break him right back.
- 40:14It's time for a break. Hot takes with the Murph man
- 40:16will return after these. Messages.
- 40:25The station where our veterans voices are heard.
- 40:29MBR talk. Hey, thanks for supporting our
- 40:32channel by watching and listening find.
- 40:34Us on the web at MB radio dot. opinions explained I.
- 45:05Don't hear anything but. I don't hear anything either.
- 45:14All right, we are back from break.
- 45:16I deal with something the world's longest sniper shot
- 45:21Dallas Alexander. Check out his channel on
- 45:22Spotify. I forgot to hit return.
- 45:29All right, this to your our segment called where you're
- 45:34going to get burned. It's those pitfalls you might
- 45:37have as you try to deal with some of these actions that we're
- 45:40talking about managing up. Let's talk about where you'll
- 45:51get burned. These are some common pitfalls.
- 45:55Avoiding your manager. Proactive communication builds
- 45:58trust. Don't only talk to them when
- 46:00there's a crisis. Surprising your boss with bad
- 46:03news at the last minute? Deliver bad news early so they
- 46:07have time to help. Complaining about problems
- 46:09without offering solutions. I wonder what kind of solutions
- 46:13can the Murph man and Connor come up with?
- 46:19All right, so we have the segment where you're going to
- 46:22get burned avoiding your manager.
- 46:25OK? Proactive communication builds
- 46:27trust. Don't only talk to them when
- 46:29there's a problem. That's why I tell parents, you
- 46:33want to be able to have a parent that comes in and talks to their
- 46:40kid. Not only something is wrong, but
- 46:44when something's good too, you can't be all negative.
- 46:46That's the whole thing with the boss surprising your boss, the
- 46:49bad news at the last minute. You know, What do you think,
- 46:54Connor? Should you tell your boss you're
- 46:55looking for a job? Oh yeah.
- 46:59But then if you don't get it, what happens?
- 47:02Well, that's why I'm just looking, right?
- 47:04Not saying I got one, I'm just looking.
- 47:06Right. But he's going to say or she's
- 47:08going to say you're not putting effort in here because you're
- 47:10looking for another job or your attitudes change since you look
- 47:14for a job, you know they're going to start getting negative
- 47:16with you. OK, then.
- 47:17If they're getting negative, then that's not a good thing.
- 47:21The good bosses don't. Yeah, no, we can talk or
- 47:24something not try to affect the job you have right now.
- 47:30And if they if they do, then honestly leave or.
- 47:34If you're trying to but you can't always just leave.
- 47:38What are they acting like that? Then I would leave.
- 47:41All right, yeah. Would you go without going to
- 47:44another job? That's my whole point.
- 47:45You got to get another job 1st and in the meantime, it's going
- 47:48to be hell. Now real quick, Connor wasn't
- 47:51paid into the chat. For those of you who are asking
- 47:53questions, let me let me address this real quick.
- 47:55Because it wasn't loading, so sorry, but it's because I was
- 47:59looking and it still showed like, you know, when you join a
- 48:03live, it only shows like Connor joined the live and then
- 48:07whatever the automated message is and then yeah, I had to get
- 48:11out of it and then go back in and then I just saw like 50 plus
- 48:15chat. I'm like, oh wow.
- 48:18So what's your major? That's one of the questions
- 48:20they're asking. Computer science.
- 48:22Computer science that already answered.
- 48:28Sorry, I was on my phone texting my personal chat.
- 48:33Yeah, Computer science at YouTube.
- 48:37And setting cyber security. All right, we have conference to
- 48:42hear the elders concerns for the youth.
- 48:44That's good. JD sweet.
- 48:45You know, it's you, you need to have mentors out there, right,
- 48:50such as our our our boss right now H trained.
- 48:58He's a great mentor. He does amazing stuff.
- 49:00He had a mentor, Mr. Bennett that he talks about.
- 49:03You know, mentors are are very, very important.
- 49:10I appreciate that. Thank you for everything we do.
- 49:13Nexus or the creator? Nexus.
- 49:16Sorry. And then let's see what else
- 49:19we're meeting. Broadcast beaker.
- 49:28He's sleepy. Cassie.
- 49:32Cassie's sleepy. That's funny.
- 49:34Oh, yeah. Hopefully you're more woken up.
- 49:36Not you've been listening to us. Let's see.
- 49:38What else Connor, what's your major they're monitoring?
- 49:43Good morning. Good morning, JJ Sweet.
- 49:46I appreciate all you guys comments.
- 49:47I really do Sorry's Congress phone wasn't uploading
- 49:51correctly. So we got them finally on the
- 49:53chat on our laptops. So we're able to do that.
- 49:57Thank you for the rosy Annette. I really appreciate that and
- 50:01it's OK to tell your boss things aren't working for you.
- 50:03It is that that is very true, JJ.
- 50:06It is very true that you can. You have to talk to your boss,
- 50:11OK, You have to. It's if it's not working for
- 50:14you, same way I say fire quickly, quit quickly.
- 50:19All right, all right, so let's talk about our next segment, our
- 50:24heat Shields. Those are things that will help
- 50:25you prevent getting burned. Here are your heat Shields
- 50:38you're managing up. Heat shield is the solution
- 50:41oriented partnership. The biggest heat source is
- 50:44misalignment between your work and your manager's priorities.
- 50:49Deploy this shield by only bringing a problem to your boss
- 50:52if you also have a clear, documented suggestion for a
- 50:55solution. This proactive shield shows
- 50:58ownership, signals that you are a partner, and protects your
- 51:01manager from unnecessary stress. What do you think, Connor?
- 51:05When you had a problem, did you come up with a solution when
- 51:07talking to the boss? No, not, not, Not really.
- 51:14No. I didn't have any problems with
- 51:17the boss, no. Not with the boss.
- 51:19Did you ever talk to your boss about problems and did you have
- 51:22solutions about them? No did.
- 51:24You ever talk to your boss about problems?
- 51:26Yeah, some stuff with like other coworkers or like customers, but
- 51:31I didn't have a solution to it. I just kind of addressed it to
- 51:33him just like, hey, this, you know, this kind of what's
- 51:36happening. Just want to let you know.
- 51:38OK. And we're back to the cleaning
- 51:40theaters. So just making them aware of
- 51:42stuff. We talked about that, right?
- 51:44Yeah. The biggest heat source that we
- 51:49talk about is misalignment between your work and your
- 51:51managers priorities. Bringing the problem to your
- 51:56boss and having a solution is not helping anybody.
- 51:59That's going to take more of their time.
- 52:01Even if your solution sucks. Giving them a solution.
- 52:05This practice shield shows ownership and signals that your
- 52:07partner and protects your manager from unnecessary stress.
- 52:11Cuz your boss is gonna have stress no matter what, right?
- 52:15They're gonna have stress. So.
- 52:18Oh, JJ, she sent us a singing mushroom.
- 52:22Thank you. Thank you.
- 52:24Yes. Thank you.
- 52:25You know, as as we do this, OK, as you talk to your boss, as you
- 52:34deal with issues and as you come up with solutions, it builds
- 52:39rapport, it builds relationships, increases
- 52:41communication, all all that stuff, right.
- 52:43But one thing it also does is it gives you the experience of
- 52:48being a manager and what you have to do when you have a boss
- 52:54that tells you, my boss is telling me to do this, I don't
- 52:57know how to do it. Can you help me?
- 53:00Yeah, that's what I do, right. But sometimes you're like, why
- 53:04would he want you to do that? Or why would she want you to do
- 53:06that? Like that's just stupid.
- 53:09Oh, he he has this, he has this. And I'm like, that's not going
- 53:13to work, you know, from someone in my perspective, well, we have
- 53:18to do it. That's stupid, but we have to do
- 53:24it. You got to do it.
- 53:25And that's the way it is, right? That's what I mean, a job is,
- 53:30let's see, JD talks about running a summer youth program
- 53:32that got kids ready for college prep and the work.
- 53:34That's awesome. That is awesome.
- 53:37You know that that's what this podcast is about, JJ, is we have
- 53:46the experience as a parent, as a counselor, as an educator, as a
- 53:50student, and we try to share that with everybody because I
- 53:53talk about all different perspectives, right?
- 53:56Yeah, as a counselor, as a as a educator, all the different
- 54:01perspectives, what I try to give you, you know, and 25 years of
- 54:05experience teaching at the college, this is my 26th.
- 54:08So wow, Yeah, pretty cool. A lot of years in this and I've
- 54:13been doing counseling cells, 19 years old and I just celebrated
- 54:16a 57th birthday. Happy.
- 54:19Belated birthday. Well, thank you.
- 54:20But what's that 19? What's 57 -?
- 54:251938, Yeah, Yeah. OK. 38 years of psychology,
- 54:34counseling, teaching. That's a lot of experience.
- 54:39Oh, and 30 years. No, I lied. 25 years of marriage
- 54:46to two different women, but 25 years of marriage, 19 years as a
- 54:50dad. Lots of experience here, right?
- 54:53And that's why I started this podcast.
- 54:55I want to share with you guys and I want to talk with you.
- 54:56So hey, JJ, let me reach out to you and maybe we can get on the
- 55:00show and talk about some stuff if that's cool with you, You
- 55:03know, so good and you're you got it.
- 55:07You told me to. I'll message you, JJ, and let
- 55:11you know. Maybe we can get together and do
- 55:13something. OK, let's see here.
- 55:16I'm going to follow you there, all right?
- 55:19And let me go to your page. OK?
- 55:24I did that. I followed you.
- 55:26And you know, you guys follow us and add us.
- 55:29We'd be happy to to talk to you. All right.
- 55:32Oh, JJ, she followed us. Yay.
- 55:33Right on. Thank you for the follow.
- 55:37Yes, thank you. Sorry, I don't know.
- 55:39You want me to say something? No.
- 55:41Followed us or followed MBR? OK.
- 55:45Just want to make sure. Maybe she just followed MBR but.
- 55:49That's what I was asking. Yeah, well, she followed the
- 55:51host. So MBR.
- 55:54Well, I don't know if we're the host.
- 55:56Gigi, who did you decide? Who did you follow, pure hot
- 55:58takes or MBR? Because you can follow both.
- 56:01I just I'm curious we're that's a good point.
- 56:04Who's the host? I think MBR.
- 56:07Well, follow the the Murph man at Pure Hot Takes and we
- 56:10definitely can do that. OK, so MBR, Yeah, she answered.
- 56:15Yeah. She's part of the Baddies club.
- 56:19All right, I got to know more about these baddies clubs.
- 56:25You know, I'm, I'm, I'm 57 years old.
- 56:27You know, your definition of baddie and my definition of
- 56:29baddie might be very different. But then again, it might be the
- 56:32same. So you never know, right?
- 56:34Yeah. What about you, Connor?
- 56:35Do you have a definition of baddies?
- 56:39No ATV show. What TV show daddies?
- 56:44OK. That's all, Yeah.
- 56:47What's it about? It's a one of those.
- 56:56What is it like live? Like, you know, like the
- 57:00Kardashians or something. Whereas like, live and the
- 57:03cameras follow like the life of someone.
- 57:07Yeah, it's kind of like that, but it's just a group of girls.
- 57:11And I don't know what the whole point of the show is, but they
- 57:15get angry at each other and they just fight and argue with each
- 57:20other. That's it.
- 57:22I've never seen it. I've seen one episode probably.
- 57:25Episodes on TV or shows on TV have deteriorated.
- 57:29I swear to God. Do you remember the movie
- 57:31Idiocracy? Yeah, I think so, yeah.
- 57:36The one where the guy comes back 5500 years later in the future
- 57:44and they're all stupid. Yeah, and he's the smartest guy
- 57:46on the planet, right? The people who were smart and
- 57:50couldn't have babies. And you have the idiots who have
- 57:5220 babies, you know. Yeah.
- 58:00The shows are just getting more stupid every year.
- 58:04OK, what do you think is the stupidest reality TV show out
- 58:06there? Reality show, that's what's
- 58:08called. I don't really watch any, but I
- 58:13don't know. I don't know any reality shows.
- 58:21That's one thing I don't look up.
- 58:23Well, you, you know The Bachelor, Love Island.
- 58:27You watch Love Island, right? Yeah, I wouldn't.
- 58:30Well, I guess it's a reality show, but it's not.
- 58:34But. It is, you know, dating.
- 58:38Let me just digress here real quick.
- 58:40Dating somebody OK to to to date someone nowadays you you can't
- 58:47just walk up to them. I'll tell you right now, I know
- 58:49you're not in that dating feel like I am, all right.
- 58:54Definitely not. Yeah, I'm remembering the chat,
- 58:57JC. Just we're facing problems like
- 58:59bosses and Idiocracy is a great movie.
- 59:06I lost what you thought that was reading what she wrote.
- 59:09Love. Love how we are.
- 59:13Different. Oh yeah.
- 59:14You know, I go online and I, I'm on chats and I'm meeting people
- 59:19or whatever, you know, and everyone's like, I want to get
- 59:21married. I'm like OK.
- 59:25In like 5 years. Well, I'm talking to you.
- 59:27I, I. Tell people like, I'm 57, I
- 59:29don't want to get married again, so that's your goal.
- 59:33Not me. I'm not your person, I said.
- 59:36At the same time though, why do you need to talk about marriage?
- 59:44Benefits. People only do it for that.
- 59:47You know, I'm, I'm single by choice.
- 59:50We're not single. You know, I have a friend.
- 59:52I see, but what I mean is I'm not married, right?
- 59:59I'm not married because I, my life needs to get in order a
- 1:00:03little better before I can even bring anyone into this house or
- 1:00:06move in with them or whatever we choose to do right?
- 1:00:08You got to go to college. You got to get the hell out of
- 1:00:09the house, right? There's.
- 1:00:11So much more that has to happen before I, I feel comfortable
- 1:00:13having a relationship like that. But then I'm like, I don't want
- 1:00:18to be in a relationship right now that where someone's at the
- 1:00:21house all the time. I I like my privacy.
- 1:00:24I like my free time. I like to be able to get up and
- 1:00:26go whenever I want. Yeah.
- 1:00:28You know, your mom and I, we had a great, great, great
- 1:00:31relationship. We got to do all that.
- 1:00:33I'd say, hey, you know, my friends call me.
- 1:00:35You want to go, you want to go with me?
- 1:00:36She's like, no go. That's OK.
- 1:00:38Sometimes she would go, sometimes she wouldn't.
- 1:00:39One time I went to Ron's studio, I got out of class at like 9:30
- 1:00:45or 10:00 at night and I called her saying what's up by and see
- 1:00:48Ron at 3:00 in the morning. She calls me, are you OK?
- 1:00:52I was like, oh, damn, I didn't like, I'm still here with Ron.
- 1:00:55We're, you know, sitting down, talking with his friends and
- 1:00:57everything, drinking a couple of beers, whatever, you know.
- 1:01:01And one guy goes, oh, you ha ha, your wife's checking in on you.
- 1:01:05And my brother says you understand that when he got
- 1:01:07here, he was on the phone telling her, hey, I'm going to
- 1:01:09come visit Ron for a little bit. It's been 5 hours.
- 1:01:13Wow, five hours. All right, and she waits till
- 1:01:173:00 in the morning to call him because if we went to the club,
- 1:01:19the club's closed. You should be home by now,
- 1:01:22right. There was one time I was driving
- 1:01:24home from the UTEP UT football game and I witnessed an
- 1:01:26accident, went over, rendered aid, whatever cops took my
- 1:01:30statement. And at that moment, your mom
- 1:01:32calls and they're like I said, can you talk to my wife, let her
- 1:01:36know that I'm not in trouble, you know, because you can hear
- 1:01:39the sirens of the ambulance and everything, right?
- 1:01:41Like really close. And he's like, no, you know,
- 1:01:44your husband helped out with whatever.
- 1:01:48I'll never find anyone like her again.
- 1:01:50And I I don't compare relationships to her, but I had
- 1:01:54what I wanted and I'm not going to find anything like that.
- 1:01:58You know what I mean? She truly was my best friend.
- 1:02:00I do miss her a lot. You know, losing this policy can
- 1:02:06be difficult, but losing a best friend is even harder.
- 1:02:08So we've been talking about this managing up and everything.
- 1:02:12Let's talk about some of those questions we need to reflect on
- 1:02:15and to determine if we're going to be doing this right or not.
- 1:02:18So let's look at some of the Afterburn questions.
- 1:02:29In today's Afterburn, here are some questions for you to
- 1:02:31reflect on. What does my manager value most
- 1:02:35in an employee? How can I make my manager's job
- 1:02:38easier this week? Is my current communication with
- 1:02:41my boss effective? What could I change?
- 1:02:44We all know the Murph Man is not perfect.
- 1:02:47What questions would you reflect on Murph Man All?
- 1:02:53Right. So the questions what does my
- 1:02:55manager value most in an employee?
- 1:02:59You know, sometimes you have managers that want someone that
- 1:03:02works, works, works and has no relationships with anybody, no
- 1:03:05friends, no nothing, right? Sometimes they want someone that
- 1:03:09is more social and more accepting because like I told
- 1:03:11you, I've had the two employees. I've had the one employee who
- 1:03:14had a very private life, very friendly, very good, you know,
- 1:03:18but did not socialize with us. Then we had another employee
- 1:03:22that worked with us. That was just weird.
- 1:03:25Nobody really wanted to talk to her, OK.
- 1:03:30And for whatever reason that happened, OK, we had these two
- 1:03:37different kind of employees. So I can tell you, I don't want
- 1:03:40someone to be my best friend, but I do want someone to
- 1:03:45interact with me at work. You know, that's what I really
- 1:03:48care about. You don't have to be friends
- 1:03:50with me, but interact with me, you know?
- 1:03:53Yeah. Like one of my my friends at
- 1:03:55work, we just started the school year and she quit.
- 1:03:58She got another job. And I sent her a message
- 1:04:00yesterday and she even asked me until this morning at 8:00.
- 1:04:06That's not bad. Almost a day.
- 1:04:09Not even a day. Right, but she didn't even look
- 1:04:13at messages yesterday. OK, then you announce you're
- 1:04:16leaving and you don't even talk. Well, did she?
- 1:04:22She put a meme out on the meme chat.
- 1:04:24Like last minute and just leave. Well, I don't know, I asked her.
- 1:04:27Is this your last day? And she just wrote back with the
- 1:04:28hand away. Whatever, but.
- 1:04:32I don't know. You know, she's a very friendly
- 1:04:34and everything, but then when she left, she just doesn't deal
- 1:04:36good with separation, I guess. I don't know.
- 1:04:39So what ends up happening is I didn't get to say goodbye.
- 1:04:43It is what it is, right? Yeah, maybe she didn't.
- 1:04:45She wanted to just like leave and get out of it.
- 1:04:48No about anything. There was one employee we had
- 1:04:50that was very difficult. I liked her.
- 1:04:54I didn't have an issue with her. Some people did, but I made an
- 1:05:00effort to be friendly with her, right.
- 1:05:06And even like when you know, someone in her family passed
- 1:05:09away, you know, from a condolences and everything, they
- 1:05:11meant it. You know, I don't think anyone
- 1:05:14else messaged her. That's pretty sad, little you
- 1:05:19know. Maybe that's what she loved.
- 1:05:21She didn't really make connections.
- 1:05:24I don't know why she loved. I just know how to take over the
- 1:05:26class. You don't need someone to be the
- 1:05:31friend of everybody, but you need someone who's social at
- 1:05:33work, that's friendly at work. You don't have to carry a
- 1:05:37relationship outside of work, but friendly at work.
- 1:05:39And that's why I tell bosses you have to have them.
- 1:05:41You know, like, for example, you and I, I'm your dad.
- 1:05:45I'm your friend. What's more the priority for me,
- 1:05:49Dad, you know that, right? And, you know, you can come and
- 1:05:54talk to me about anything. I might get angry because if you
- 1:05:58lie to me or. But if you were to come up to me
- 1:06:00right away as something happens, my attitude's very different
- 1:06:04versus you lying to me later on. Yeah, OK.
- 1:06:09But we can talk about everything all day long.
- 1:06:11Like we tell people we go to restaurants and we eat.
- 1:06:14No one knows why we don't talk at dinner.
- 1:06:20They just see us on our phones. Well, we've been driving around
- 1:06:23doing things for like 3 or 4 hours and that's actually our
- 1:06:26break from each other. Yeah, on the way to the
- 1:06:28restaurant is when we talk, but every time we're always like
- 1:06:31this. At the restaurant.
- 1:06:33Yeah, just playing games, watching TikTok, whatever.
- 1:06:36Yeah, sometimes. Sometimes we make small talk.
- 1:06:39Sometimes. What would you consider a small
- 1:06:41talk with me? Well, like at the restaurant,
- 1:06:44just like finishing up what we talked about or just hey, so you
- 1:06:49see TikTok, whatever. You know what's up with the
- 1:06:51weather? Yeah.
- 1:06:52Yeah, what brand is your microwave?
- 1:07:00What brand is my way? You're stupid, dude.
- 1:07:04You don't understand friendly banter, JJ Sweet disease.
- 1:07:07Being socially awkward. Conversations are friendly.
- 1:07:09So hard. Are so hard because you're
- 1:07:12masking. OK, let me tell you, we all
- 1:07:17have. I I look at ourselves as
- 1:07:19diamonds in the rough. OK, you've heard of that term
- 1:07:20before. When you pull a diamond out of
- 1:07:23the dirt, it's all misshapen. It's not really been bright or
- 1:07:26anything. It's actually, you know, you
- 1:07:27have to chop away at it and you've got to get to the
- 1:07:29diamond. We all have a different facet
- 1:07:33that we present to different people.
- 1:07:34Facet. Yeah, that is the face of a
- 1:07:36diamond aside. So inside you're that diamond.
- 1:07:44OK, we got to just flame overhead.
- 1:07:47Yeah, we live by airport. Sorry guys.
- 1:07:50No, like the flame. Like over to the house.
- 1:07:52Like literally, that's why it's so loud.
- 1:07:55You know, we are in a soundproof room, so to speak.
- 1:07:58Well, I know, I know, but it's still.
- 1:08:02Well, well, I don't know. Yeah.
- 1:08:05We, we have like the door open and stuff, you know?
- 1:08:07Yeah, we. Have the because it was really
- 1:08:09hot last night. Anyway, so you have these facets
- 1:08:12of your life, right? Everyone sees a different side
- 1:08:15of you, OK? And you choose who you want to
- 1:08:18show your real self self true. And I'll give you an example of
- 1:08:21this. I use this in Graduate School.
- 1:08:24There's a wall between you and someone else.
- 1:08:27Can we agree on that? Oh, yeah.
- 1:08:29When you meet someone, right, there's a wall.
- 1:08:32Well, you get a brick and you remove it.
- 1:08:35When you tell something personal about yourself so they can see
- 1:08:37through the wall to you, sometimes you start pulling out
- 1:08:40a brick. It's like, oh, no, no, no,
- 1:08:43they're not ready for that brick.
- 1:08:44Let's plug this one over here. Right as you talk to the person,
- 1:08:53over time that wall comes down or the halls get holes, get big
- 1:08:56enough. Maybe they don't see their whole
- 1:08:57life, but they see everything. And like I, I've met people that
- 1:09:07I had an instant attraction too. And I don't mean like attraction
- 1:09:11sexually or romantically. I mean I felt instantly
- 1:09:16comfortable with them. OK, You don't have the energy to
- 1:09:20pretend. So don't pretend.
- 1:09:24You know, you don't have to pretend that.
- 1:09:27That's the whole point. Be genuine, you know, don't,
- 1:09:31don't, don't be a bitch. Don't be a jerk, right?
- 1:09:35But be real, be unique. Be yourself.
- 1:09:39Don't just sit there and say, hey, I don't want to talk to
- 1:09:43you, you know, don't be like that.
- 1:09:45But so, you know, right now I'm not.
- 1:09:47I don't want to be doing this, you know, but at the same time,
- 1:09:51you can sit there and you can say, hey, listen to this, all
- 1:09:54right, talk to me about this and I'm moving on as you do it
- 1:10:01before you know it, guess what, you either get rid of the person
- 1:10:05or you become president. When, when you don't like
- 1:10:10somebody, trust your gut instinct and you can say just no
- 1:10:16one walk away. You know, it depends if you're
- 1:10:18at work or where you are. Of course the the situation
- 1:10:21dictates that. But as you sit there and you,
- 1:10:27I'm trying to think how I can put this when you're interacting
- 1:10:34with somebody, how much you want to share is up to you.
- 1:10:38If you have someone who's being nosy, tell them to go to hell,
- 1:10:42right? If you have someone that's
- 1:10:43genuinely interested in you, take the time to get to know
- 1:10:46them. But you don't have to be friends
- 1:10:49immediately. But but there's a big butt, and
- 1:10:54it's not just my butt in the room.
- 1:10:55It's the big butt that says trust your first instinct.
- 1:11:02Trust it. OK, if you're always socially
- 1:11:06awkward, if you're always hard to talk to people and
- 1:11:10everything, OK, that's fine. But trust your gut.
- 1:11:15And one of the things I'll tell you is there's a book called All
- 1:11:19the Places you go by Doctor Seuss, right?
- 1:11:22I love that book and it it talks about how they play games and
- 1:11:27sometimes you'll be the winningest winner of all, except
- 1:11:31when you don't because sometimes you'll play lonely games, two
- 1:11:37games you can't win because you play against you.
- 1:11:41That's that sentence to me is so interesting because you can't
- 1:11:48always win because you're playing against you, right?
- 1:11:54Well, technically you're in your own head.
- 1:11:57If you are playing against you, someone has to win, right?
- 1:12:01So technically, wouldn't you win every time?
- 1:12:03Well, but that would also mean you would also be losing.
- 1:12:07So. In order to have a win win,
- 1:12:10someone has to lose. That's you both have to lose
- 1:12:12something. OK.
- 1:12:14But what I mean is I'll, I'll give you an example.
- 1:12:18Your mom, OK, Your mom was beautiful.
- 1:12:21She she was way out of my league.
- 1:12:24She liked younger guys, blonde haired, blue eyed, attractive,
- 1:12:29athletic, you name it. Everything I'm not, she liked.
- 1:12:35And the first day I met her, it was just like AI couldn't I
- 1:12:39liked her so much. She was just such a cool chick,
- 1:12:41you know, and we became friends and we, you know, I date other
- 1:12:45people. And one day I liked her.
- 1:12:48And, you know, before, you know, we started dating, it just, you
- 1:12:50know, friendship grew. But she was way out of my
- 1:12:54league. And when I would tell people
- 1:12:56that I liked her, they would look at me like you're stupid,
- 1:12:59like you had no chance. Like look at the kind of guy
- 1:13:01she's like, I'm like, I don't know.
- 1:13:04It does. It doesn't.
- 1:13:04Hurt to try. And.
- 1:13:06Where should he say he's not right?
- 1:13:08Exactly, So I can tell you right now that I've dated and married
- 1:13:16out of my league with your mom. She she was way out there and
- 1:13:22everyone knew the side of me has been a jerk and unfriendly
- 1:13:27because I just don't put up with people's drama.
- 1:13:28Right when we got married, people will tell her, Are you
- 1:13:32sure you want to marry him? And she's like, you don't know
- 1:13:33how he is behind closed doors because she saw the real me,
- 1:13:37right? And she saw the real me when
- 1:13:45other people did it. And yes, Connor is my kid.
- 1:13:49Yes. Yeah, he is my kid.
- 1:13:51He is my father. So you see how ugly I am and see
- 1:13:54how ugly he is. Yeah.
- 1:13:55He got my traits, not his mom's. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:00You know what? You know what thing you did get
- 1:14:02from your mom? My skin color.
- 1:14:05Your hairy, your hair. She was very hairy.
- 1:14:10Really. Yeah, she was going to be her
- 1:14:12own type, I told you, and she went and had it waxed.
- 1:14:16It's like, oh, what the hell was that?
- 1:14:18I don't think, I don't know. Dude, you're Chewbacca.
- 1:14:23You are Chewbacca all right. I'm more like a a gremlin.
- 1:14:30Is that what they're called? No.
- 1:14:32Let's find out. Yeah, good job she just spilled
- 1:14:37water all over the floor. Whatever, go on the gremlin.
- 1:14:43Oh, like one of those little fur balls.
- 1:14:46Oh, before they become. Yeah, OK.
- 1:14:48Before they. He's a Mogwai, the gremlin's
- 1:14:52after water. Oh, I thought they were just
- 1:14:56that, and then, Oh well, no. They're Mogwai's.
- 1:15:00And then they go to Gremlin, yeah. 3 rules, don't feed them
- 1:15:02after midnight, don't get them wet and I was the third one.
- 1:15:09Everybody, if anybody's seen it, there's no, I don't know.
- 1:15:15It's wrong talking about your mom's beard.
- 1:15:17She didn't have a beard. I said.
- 1:15:18She had a mustache. There's a difference.
- 1:15:19No bright lights. No bright lights.
- 1:15:22That's right. I remember.
- 1:15:24No, she didn't have a beard. She was just, she was hairy.
- 1:15:26I mean, it just, it is what it is.
- 1:15:29And well, let me, let me, let me let me rephrase that, OK?
- 1:15:33She wasn't hairy all the time after during her cancer
- 1:15:36treatments. Yeah, during her cancer
- 1:15:37treatments, she had to take medication for menopause, which
- 1:15:40changed her hormones and everything.
- 1:15:41And she started getting very hairy.
- 1:15:44It it wasn't because she was a hairy person.
- 1:15:46Let me let me clarify that. But I was telling Connor she
- 1:15:49actually went and got waxed one day because she thought that's
- 1:15:52how you got rid of facial hair. Did it hurt?
- 1:15:55It hurt. She was all like red and cherry.
- 1:15:58It was, it was funny and I'm like, what are you doing?
- 1:16:01So I don't want to shave. I'm like, well, you can get an
- 1:16:04electric razor that shaves you better than almost as good as
- 1:16:07you're on your lips. So you just rub it over.
- 1:16:08You don't have to worry about keeping your goatee lined up or
- 1:16:10whatever. Just shave yourself.
- 1:16:12I bought her a razor and you know, the hardest thing I ever
- 1:16:15had to do this is this is something completely off
- 1:16:17subject, but a subject sort of was when she started having her
- 1:16:21hair loss. I shaved her head.
- 1:16:24That was the hardest thing I ever had to do.
- 1:16:27Let's take off her hair. And after she went through
- 1:16:30treatments and got better and started growing her hair back
- 1:16:32and everything, that's when the hormones kicked in and she
- 1:16:35started having all this beard stuff.
- 1:16:37Yes. Bless her, please.
- 1:16:39You know. But yeah, the The thing is, she
- 1:16:43was out of my league. If I like something, I just do
- 1:16:47it. That's, for example, Christmas
- 1:16:49presents or birthday presents. Do I need anything?
- 1:16:55No. If I need something, I buy it.
- 1:16:56Right? Yeah, the Grumps.
- 1:16:58He gave me a watch. That was nice.
- 1:17:00That was a nice walk. It is a nice watch.
- 1:17:02I don't use watches right, You don't because my wrists are very
- 1:17:07thick and it's hard to find watches that fit me.
- 1:17:11Well. And her watch fit me perfectly.
- 1:17:15I. Wonder where she got it from?
- 1:17:19I don't know. I don't know actually.
- 1:17:20I mean, literally, I put it on. It wasn't tight, it wasn't
- 1:17:22loose. It wasn't everything because I,
- 1:17:24I had to watch that was bigger, that had.
- 1:17:30I've lost weight. So the rings were loose, you
- 1:17:33know. So I don't know how she did it,
- 1:17:35but she found it perfectly for me.
- 1:17:39This is a father and son show. Yeah.
- 1:17:42Sweet rope it is. It is.
- 1:17:45That's why I started, because of him.
- 1:17:47You know, he didn't realize the whole first year of our episodes
- 1:17:50was all about him going through college.
- 1:17:53Remember when I told you that you never realized it?
- 1:17:56What like our whole first episode starting off with you in
- 1:18:01college was to prepare you for college and the challenge you
- 1:18:04would face along the way, like talking to your teachers during
- 1:18:06midterms. Yeah, it's true if.
- 1:18:09It's all me to give you advice because you don't listen to me.
- 1:18:13So by doing it here, I was able to tell you things that you
- 1:18:17normally wouldn't. Listen to me.
- 1:18:18Yeah, never heard of that. You can just say listen to your
- 1:18:21advice. Start a podcast.
- 1:18:24Never heard of that. Right.
- 1:18:27Start a podcast. Start a podcast.
- 1:18:29Yeah, no one listens to you. You know, and what what's funny
- 1:18:32is when I wrote this just so you guys know I have 68 episodes
- 1:18:36that I pre wrote because my favorite number 69 excess hero
- 1:18:39is born and I want to do something special with the
- 1:18:41episode. But kind of asked me what do we
- 1:18:44do after that? I said I don't know, start over.
- 1:18:49Day one of college. Right, so I'm like, how are we
- 1:18:56going to handle that? So we'll talk about that later.
- 1:18:57But Joe, don't talk about my beer.
- 1:19:03Just that's funny. So just you don't have a beard,
- 1:19:15you. Ain't got no beard.
- 1:19:17And he's still not listening. No, he's not right.
- 1:19:20You know, I, I tell him he is so contradictory to me.
- 1:19:26Anything I say, he always has the opposite point of view.
- 1:19:29Not always. Some stuff, yes.
- 1:19:31Mostly, mostly, mostly. You're always contradicting me.
- 1:19:35Even my friends have pointed out to you like, why do you do that?
- 1:19:37Because I do it for a reason. What's the reason you think I'm
- 1:19:41wrong? Sometimes, but sometimes you
- 1:19:44could be wrong. I never said I wasn't wrong.
- 1:19:46Well, I know. But that's why I that's like one
- 1:19:49of the only reasons I, you know, talk with my and argue, not
- 1:19:54argue but have different perspective on it.
- 1:19:57A. Perspective is one thing.
- 1:19:59You, you straight up say no, that's not right, No, and
- 1:20:03sometimes. Sometimes I'm right, but it's
- 1:20:06just. OK, let me ask you a question.
- 1:20:08On a percentage basis, if you would have listened to my
- 1:20:10percentage, a certain percentage of my advice, what percent do
- 1:20:17you think you look back on and say, damn, he was right?
- 1:20:23Well, 80%. 80% because I mean, imagine if you would have just
- 1:20:27listened to me the first time, right?
- 1:20:31Still 80%, still 80%. I'll tell you what, we're going
- 1:20:36to take a quick break, you guys. We will be back.
- 1:20:40Question authority is, is OK, you know, but when you're trying
- 1:20:44to get someone advice and everything and they don't take
- 1:20:46it, you're like, oh, well, you know, you can't.
- 1:20:47You can take a horse to water, but you can make them drink.
- 1:20:50And hindsight is always 2020. But even then, he still says I'm
- 1:20:53only 80% right. All right, you guys, we'll take
- 1:20:58a quick break and we'll be right back after these messages.
- 1:21:04It's time for a break. Hot takes with the Murph man
- 1:21:06will return after these. Messages.

- 1:25:47I was monitoring the chat over the break and did she brought up
- 1:25:56a comment. She said the hot thing and just
- 1:26:04tell him not to touch the hot thing.
- 1:26:05He's doing it. I have no idea what hot thing
- 1:26:09she's talking about. What's so funny?
- 1:26:18You know when you're a baby and you're younger, your parents
- 1:26:21tell you don't touch the stove because it's hot, or don't touch
- 1:26:24this because it's hot, or don't touch my vape because it's
- 1:26:27hotter, don't touch my joint because it's hot, or whatever.
- 1:26:31OK. And then your little kid going
- 1:26:33to touch the stove and you burn yourself.
- 1:26:36But I told you don't, right? That's what she's referring to.
- 1:26:39But my thing is, I tell people, you don't learn anything until
- 1:26:46you have a personal consequence, right?
- 1:26:49So it doesn't matter what you do if you don't learn it and you
- 1:26:56can still touch the fire more than once and get burned.
- 1:27:01Like like for example, I told, I told Connor, you know, you're
- 1:27:04not 420 friendly. Yeah.
- 1:27:07And I was like, I don't know what that is.
- 1:27:10I thought it was like 365 like a year and like 1/4 of a year.
- 1:27:16I had no idea what you were talking about. 420 friendly is
- 1:27:20when you're either smoke or do edibles and you use marijuana,
- 1:27:31you smoke marijuana, you know, you're friendly.
- 1:27:32That's what it means. And a lot of people have to get
- 1:27:35high to, to interact with people, you know, and I, I just,
- 1:27:38I don't like that personally. You know, we don't do drugs.
- 1:27:41I'm OK with drugs. I I'm OK with people doing
- 1:27:43edibles. I'm looking with people doing
- 1:27:44drugs like near me but. But I will tell you there's
- 1:27:49there's two kinds of marijuana. You have sativas and indica.
- 1:27:52And sativa is the more aggressive psychological effects
- 1:27:55like hallucinations and everything.
- 1:27:57Really. I thought sativa was more
- 1:27:59relaxing and just. Maybe I have it backwards, Look
- 1:28:02it up real quick. Let's see.
- 1:28:05OK, forensics help me out. Yeah, we're true.
- 1:28:07We're not 420 friendly so. Well, I I tried when I tried
- 1:28:16what? All right, so what's sativa?
- 1:28:22Sativa, OH Energizing, stimulating, reduced anxiety,
- 1:28:27increased creativity, increase focus.
- 1:28:30And indica. Relaxing relief of pain,
- 1:28:32decreases nausea, increases appetite, better sleep.
- 1:28:35So OK, I'm thinking indica. OK.
- 1:28:38OK. So there's also what they call
- 1:28:40hybrids, a little bit of both, right?
- 1:28:44We call it gardening. The The thing is, when you have
- 1:28:49an edible, you have an edible that you eat, like a cookie or
- 1:28:54something. That cookie has a dose.
- 1:28:57OK, What's a cookie? A cookie with marijuana in it
- 1:29:01has a dose. It's an edible.
- 1:29:02OK, You eat it. You can have gummy bears.
- 1:29:05Now, if I give you, you know what a regular gummy bear looks
- 1:29:07like, right? Oh, yeah.
- 1:29:08OK. If I give you a gummy bear with
- 1:29:09an edible in it, how would you eat it?
- 1:29:14Open the package. And they shove the whole eat it
- 1:29:17do even though the dose of the gummy bear.
- 1:29:20No. You're supposed to like bite the
- 1:29:22head off and save it, wait a couple of hours, see the
- 1:29:27reaction and then say, OK, I can eat 2 parts of the teddy bear
- 1:29:32and you got to try it. I had a friend of mine who came
- 1:29:35from Colorado. He had some edibles and he gives
- 1:29:38it to a friend of mine and she, she grabbed all three, all three
- 1:29:41gummy bears and just popped them in her mouth and ate them.
- 1:29:45And she tells me, hey, your friend gave me some edibles.
- 1:29:48I'm like, oh really? What did he give you all the,
- 1:29:49the gummies? Oh, and I said, where are they?
- 1:29:52She was, I ate them already. And I said, you need to call
- 1:29:57your work and call in sick tomorrow.
- 1:29:58Right now. You're not going to work
- 1:30:01tomorrow. She was like, what?
- 1:30:04I'm like, you know, I, I don't know the dose.
- 1:30:07I went to the guy and he says they're 30 milligrams.
- 1:30:08So he, you know, she had never done edibles.
- 1:30:10It's like good or how much is that a?
- 1:30:14100 milligrams is what people who use it regularly take
- 1:30:19because they're with the high tolerance to it.
- 1:30:21She took 101st time. Wow.
- 1:30:26Yeah, and she wasn't doing good the next day, or she was fried
- 1:30:30or she didn't go to work and you know, so.
- 1:30:37You know, sometimes not even like for edibles or anything I I
- 1:30:41just have my ADHD. I get a gummy bear.
- 1:30:44You know you like part of the ear or part of the legs.
- 1:30:47It was like nibble out of. It but regular, not edible.
- 1:30:50Yeah, no regular. Yeah, OK.
- 1:30:52I'm just like, because, you know, you said like, bite the
- 1:30:54head off and keep it. Yeah.
- 1:30:56Just like regularly I. Would you're practicing if you
- 1:30:59ever do edibles? How do you?
- 1:31:01No but H was telling JDS weed and he says I really love how
- 1:31:06you interact. I sent her a message personally
- 1:31:07and told her thank you for that. I didn't do it in here in the
- 1:31:09chat and she just counter opposes.
- 1:31:11Makes his dad work for it. Yes, yes he does.
- 1:31:14I. Thought she meant hot thing like
- 1:31:16are you mean or are? You mean?
- 1:31:19Arguing I I was going to say argument.
- 1:31:22What do you mean? What do you mean?
- 1:31:27A meme? Are you mean, Sorry, it sounds
- 1:31:32like we're high, but we're not. This is just being stupid.
- 1:31:34All right. Real quick, just we have a
- 1:31:36segment that we talk about technology is colored digital
- 1:31:39infernal. Let's talk about that real
- 1:31:41quick, and we'll be right back. Digital platforms are key to
- 1:31:52streamlining communication based on your boss's style.
- 1:31:56Use Asana or Trello to create a shared in progress board that
- 1:32:00your manager can check asynchronously, removing the
- 1:32:03need for daily interruptive status updates.
- 1:32:06Always use e-mail or Slack to send a weekly win slash blocker
- 1:32:10summary, ensuring your manager is constantly informed of your
- 1:32:13contributions and any roadblocks before your scheduled check in.
- 1:32:17Let's talk about Connor's favorite subject, AI and
- 1:32:20technology. Speaking of technology.
- 1:32:29Every time, on breaks or on videos.
- 1:32:33I I told Connor check the tray and he says what are you talking
- 1:32:35about? That's the taskbar.
- 1:32:36I'm like, no, the taskbar is the bottom part of it and the tray
- 1:32:40is to the right. So look.
- 1:32:42But if you click on the arrow up, see also the pops up.
- 1:32:47Still part of the taskbar. No.
- 1:32:49I'm saying that's the taskbar because the arrow is for icons
- 1:32:55that are not shown on the taskbar.
- 1:32:57I know there's still room on our taskbar to show it.
- 1:32:59See, this is the contradictory stuff I'm talking about.
- 1:33:02This is the bullshit that he no that I talked about.
- 1:33:05He says the bottom bar is taskbar, but then the right side
- 1:33:08of the taskbar is a tray. The whole thing is a taskbar.
- 1:33:12You say the whole thing is a taskbar.
- 1:33:14Yes. Watch this Is there a difference
- 1:33:21between taskbar and tray? Now remember he's a computer
- 1:33:27science major. Yes, the tray, officially called
- 1:33:30the Notification Area System Tray is a lot, just a smaller
- 1:33:33part of the entire taskbar. The taskbar is the whole bar and
- 1:33:36the tray sits in the corner of it.
- 1:33:38Still part of the taskbar. But it's not the taskbar, it is
- 1:33:41the tray. It is, and Louis said It's part
- 1:33:43of the taskbar. It's a smaller part of the
- 1:33:45taskbar. It's the quarter part of the
- 1:33:46taskbar. Connor, the tray is just a small
- 1:33:51part. The taskbar.
- 1:33:53The taskbar is the. Whole a taskbar, it was small,
- 1:33:56it was small. Part of it.
- 1:33:57It doesn't matter the tray 1% black and black.
- 1:34:00Then white, white. Don't let me start on that.
- 1:34:05You listen this you're doing this.
- 1:34:09I need this. OK, www.zipit.com, right?
- 1:34:16The tray has an official term for the notification area.
- 1:34:21Yes, but. It's hold on, it's called.
- 1:34:24I said it's the tray in the taskbar.
- 1:34:32It's not the taskbar in the taskbar.
- 1:34:34That means it's a separate component altogether because you
- 1:34:37can turn off your sys tray, but you can turn off notifications.
- 1:34:40It's different than a taskbar. Well, no, you could take off the
- 1:34:44apps. Yeah, you can mute them.
- 1:34:46Do you turn it off? Right, it's your notifications,
- 1:34:49but the sys tray or the the tray or the notification area is part
- 1:34:53of but not not called taskbar because it's a different
- 1:34:59component altogether. I never said it was called the
- 1:35:01taskbar, I'm just saying it's in the taskbar.
- 1:35:04It is in the taskbar, but it's it's not the taskbar.
- 1:35:06It has a different name for it. How is it in the taskbar but
- 1:35:10it's not the taskbar? The taskbar includes that like
- 1:35:13I'm trying to. OK.
- 1:35:14Yes. So that it's still part of it.
- 1:35:17If it's in a category, but it's a topic, it's still in the same
- 1:35:20category. Is it not candy?
- 1:35:22Is it not candy? Is it not Nerds?
- 1:35:24Is it not? Nerds, right?
- 1:35:26The candy nerds. What are the candy nerds?
- 1:35:29Nerds candy. I don't know.
- 1:35:30No, what are the nerds? Pink.
- 1:35:32Purple. What's considered the nerds?
- 1:35:36The the thing inside it, The Little Rock Like candy.
- 1:35:42Candy. Yes.
- 1:35:42Those are the nerds, yes, You have a nerd rope, right?
- 1:35:48You have nerds on a rope. I I've never seen this.
- 1:35:52I don't know, but yeah. OK, well, you've seen in nerd
- 1:35:54clusters the little candy gummy things covered in Nerds.
- 1:36:00It's Nerd cluster. That's the whole thing made-up
- 1:36:03of the gummy and the nerds. Yeah, called the nerd cluster.
- 1:36:09You have the task bar with the task tray.
- 1:36:12In the bar which is. Look, they're laughing at you.
- 1:36:18You. Can't tell me I'm wrong.
- 1:36:21You can't tell me I'm wrong. OK.
- 1:36:22All right, JJ, I'd love your interaction.
- 1:36:26Choose one. Is notification and trade the
- 1:36:29same thing? I mean notification and test
- 1:36:31bar. You're saying something
- 1:36:33completely different, John, And I'm telling you something and
- 1:36:37you're like, yes, it's part of this.
- 1:36:38It's OK, But what I'm saying is not what you're saying we.
- 1:36:41Won't block you, but is Connor right?
- 1:36:45We're both right or am I right? We're both right.
- 1:36:48I think we're both right. Let's see what she says.
- 1:36:52Let's see if she answers. All right, while we're doing
- 1:36:55that, let's talk about our digital infernity.
- 1:36:58Did we replay it? We did, right?
- 1:37:00Yeah. OK, got it.
- 1:37:02All right. Use the signal trail to create a
- 1:37:04shared in progress board with your manager.
- 1:37:07She you know if your manager uses a different program, great
- 1:37:11because you know whatever you use, but your boss needs to be
- 1:37:15able to look at it and go this is where they are in their
- 1:37:17projects. For my business, we use click
- 1:37:19up. You go in there and you have
- 1:37:21projects. You can see where the status is.
- 1:37:23If Connor's part of the team, he can go in there and he can
- 1:37:24update his portion of it and you can see the tasks they're being
- 1:37:28done. OK, click UPS, it's free.
- 1:37:30Use it also use e-mail or select to send a weekly when or blocker
- 1:37:37summary, ensuring your manager is constantly informed of your
- 1:37:40contributions that any roadblocks before scheduling a
- 1:37:43check up. So basically giving them a heads
- 1:37:45up I. Was right.
- 1:37:48Said the same thing but differently.
- 1:37:50OK, all I was saying was OK no, it's in the taskbar and you were
- 1:37:54saying something completely different.
- 1:37:56All I said is in the taskbar yes or no all.
- 1:37:58Right, she says. See.
- 1:37:59But I'm talking to you, I'm talking to you.
- 1:38:01I'm talking to. You, I said.
- 1:38:02You're you're. But we have this whole argument.
- 1:38:04But I'm saying you're right and. Now, right you after you Googled
- 1:38:08it and all that, Yeah. Which is, but we're saying the
- 1:38:11same thing differently, and I'm saying yes, and you're still
- 1:38:13arguing the point with me, Connor.
- 1:38:15'Cause you were wrong, you were right.
- 1:38:17But wrongs, Yeah, I've been telling you.
- 1:38:20And I said we had a whole argument.
- 1:38:21For both, right? We're the perspective #6 #9
- 1:38:24right? It's the same thing.
- 1:38:26That does not clarify into this. I Connor, I swear, sometimes
- 1:38:33you're just so funny, you know? All right, so technology.
- 1:38:39Technologia. Technologia, it's out there, you
- 1:38:50guys, there's so many things you can use out there.
- 1:38:52You know, it's click up is something I'm learning how to
- 1:38:57use. There's various different
- 1:39:00things. There's Zapier, there's just a
- 1:39:02million different products out there that you can buy.
- 1:39:04Never heard of? Anything click Up is, well,
- 1:39:05because you don't use them. Click Up is free and I use that
- 1:39:08one and it can incorporate an entire team.
- 1:39:12You can actually have like emails.
- 1:39:16It can read all of your emails. You just set the accounts in
- 1:39:18there and reads all of your emails, but they get forwarded
- 1:39:21there. Now I don't know if you know
- 1:39:22this or not, but if you forward an e-mail, it doesn't stay in
- 1:39:25your e-mail box. It gets put in this other one.
- 1:39:29OK, so when you forward an e-mail, you have to check the
- 1:39:32box to leave it in the original e-mail and it sends a copy to
- 1:39:35you. So little things like that,
- 1:39:38really. Yeah, I thought Forward was just
- 1:39:40like you get an e-mail and you just send it to someone else.
- 1:39:43No, like if I have my phone forwarded to you.
- 1:39:46Yeah. And I get a phone call, it
- 1:39:47doesn't ring on my phone. It just goes straight to you.
- 1:39:49I have no record of anyone calling me so you need to make
- 1:39:54sure you check off that little portion of that that says please
- 1:39:57keep in the original e-mail. And as we're talking here, you
- 1:40:01know you have the the technology of texting e-mail programs like
- 1:40:10Slack and click up. There's there's no reason to not
- 1:40:14communicate with your boss. OK sharing a message like group
- 1:40:20chats. I hate group chats because.
- 1:40:22You were here the other day when the my Spanish group chat was
- 1:40:25going off. Yeah.
- 1:40:26How? How?
- 1:40:27Bing Bing, Bing. Bing literally, that's how fast
- 1:40:29it was. He's not being funny.
- 1:40:31That's how fast it was. And I was like I'm in like 5
- 1:40:35group chats and that I don't think I've seen it anybody text
- 1:40:40that fast like holy, how many people do you have in that group
- 1:40:45chat? 90 OK, so that kind of makes.
- 1:40:48Sense one person has the question, nine people reply and
- 1:40:50then person #3 replies to person #5 and then #2 replace #9 and
- 1:40:56the whole thread is like screwed because you don't know who's
- 1:40:58replaying the what. You know what I mean?
- 1:41:01Like for example, we were doing training this week and they're
- 1:41:03like, what region are we? And I answered and that's the
- 1:41:08answer, right? The next person writes, oh, I
- 1:41:11did not know that. Or the next person.
- 1:41:13Where'd you find that information or the next?
- 1:41:16Like, I don't know, I just know. So at some point I was told it
- 1:41:19was this and that's the district, you know.
- 1:41:24Oh, that's cool. You know, I, I, you know, I've
- 1:41:27been, I'm in region 19. That doesn't matter.
- 1:41:30Like, you know, respect the group chat, the group.
- 1:41:34Chat for a reason. Yeah, but try to keep it on
- 1:41:37topic, OK? That technically is on topic.
- 1:41:42Technically, but let me ask you a question on Friday night when
- 1:41:43you're about to go out with your friends and you have 5 friends
- 1:41:45in the chat or how many you have in your chat.
- 1:41:47I don't know, right Yeah. And someone says where do you
- 1:41:49want to go tonight? And five people get 5 different
- 1:41:51answers. One of you should do a poll and
- 1:41:59say OK I was. Gonna say do a poll, but we we
- 1:42:02talk about it and be like, well, this place.
- 1:42:04No, because of this. This.
- 1:42:06Yeah. All right.
- 1:42:13When I say like, where do you want to go eat, right?
- 1:42:17One of the best questions you can ask somebody, don't ask,
- 1:42:21what do you feel like going to go eat tonight?
- 1:42:23I hate that question. Do you know how I ask it?
- 1:42:26So you remember. I don't know, I.
- 1:42:29Think do I ever say Where do you want to go eat?
- 1:42:33No. What do you feel like eating?
- 1:42:34Yeah. What do you feel like eating?
- 1:42:36Even though I say burgers, there's like 20,000 joints.
- 1:42:39Oh, OK, but that narrows it down.
- 1:42:42To what? There's more burger places than
- 1:42:44any other, like fast food restaurant.
- 1:42:46OK, but like we can do Italian, Mexican, Chinese, right?
- 1:42:49Same burgers eliminates all those.
- 1:42:52Oh yeah. So it it narrows it.
- 1:42:54Down everything everything about like fast food, then it'll it'll
- 1:42:58just be burgers. Oh, then the next question is,
- 1:43:00do you want to sit down and eat, or do you want to get it to go?
- 1:43:02We used to sit down in a rush, in a fast.
- 1:43:04Way you can, but that's the next question, right?
- 1:43:06Yeah. OK, so now we have a restaurant
- 1:43:08you can go sit at or or take away.
- 1:43:11You can go to Chili's and take out, but I'm not going to order
- 1:43:13a burger and Chili's and not sit there, you know what I mean?
- 1:43:15Yeah, they kind. Of so asking this one question.
- 1:43:18Your answer's always burgers. You need to meet JJ.
- 1:43:23Hey, JD, real quick, what area of the country are you?
- 1:43:26We're in El Paso. Anyway, asking the question,
- 1:43:31what do you feel like eating narrows down a lot of the issues
- 1:43:35and improvements, a lot of arguments with couples, OK.
- 1:43:40Because it narrows it down automatically.
- 1:43:42You know, someone can tell me. I don't know where I want to go.
- 1:43:46OK, What do you feel like eating?
- 1:43:48I want some tacos. OK.
- 1:43:51Do you want flautas or do you want tacos?
- 1:43:52Do you want meat? Do you want chicken?
- 1:43:53Do you want? OK.
- 1:43:56Because, see, I eat a lot and I know where to go.
- 1:43:59Right? And I tried new restaurants just
- 1:44:01to try them, right? Yeah.
- 1:44:06We went to this restaurant over there in front of UMC one day.
- 1:44:08We haven't been back. We didn't hate it, but we just
- 1:44:11tried it. So now we know what it's like,
- 1:44:12you know? Yeah.
- 1:44:13And it's Mexican food in El Paso, almost all the same except
- 1:44:16when you try me News or something.
- 1:44:19Pacific Northwest. She's out in Washington.
- 1:44:21Always rainy and cloudy over there.
- 1:44:25I love that. I love that.
- 1:44:26I've never heard of you guys getting floods.
- 1:44:28So that's that's a nice thing about that.
- 1:44:29I love the weather. Colorado is also really cool for
- 1:44:32me. I lived there for four years.
- 1:44:34Yeah. We want.
- 1:44:35I want to eat Well, yeah. Take some away, guys.
- 1:44:39But we don't have the Tornadoes. I don't say we don't have the
- 1:44:41earthquakes, but we've had earthquakes.
- 1:44:44We live by mountains. You.
- 1:44:44Know, yeah, we also had a explosion one block over and we
- 1:44:50also we thought it was an earthquake.
- 1:44:52Had floods. We've had floods, I.
- 1:44:53Saw it on TikTok. You said it, you mentioned it
- 1:44:56the same day to me. And later on, I see someone like
- 1:44:59in a kayak, literally just I'm like, oh, OK, I'm like.
- 1:45:03Lake Piedras, right? There might be water on the
- 1:45:05roadway. There was water from the
- 1:45:07spaghetti bowl all the way to Cotton.
- 1:45:09Like the bridge to go up on Cotton.
- 1:45:10That whole area was a lake, a lake.
- 1:45:13It was huge. You know, spaghetti bowl Donnie.
- 1:45:15Right on the beach, right on tsunami zone, Yeah.
- 1:45:17Oh yeah, dude. Yes, you know, I see this.
- 1:45:21We don't have to worry about that either.
- 1:45:23Thank God. You know, tsunamis is not
- 1:45:25something I think of when I think of a place to live.
- 1:45:27I think of like, if you don't like the rain, you don't like
- 1:45:29the cloud, you don't like the snow, don't go to Washington.
- 1:45:31If you like hiking and stuff like that and your 420 friendly,
- 1:45:33go to Washington. What would you do?
- 1:45:35And if you like Starbucks? If there's a nice place, but
- 1:45:38then it's just there's a tsunami coming you.
- 1:45:43Mean that's the only risk. Yeah, but you didn't know about
- 1:45:46it till you bought the house after.
- 1:45:49Well, if you live on the beaches, there's a tsunami.
- 1:45:51I mean, I'm. Not the beach, but like in a
- 1:45:53city that you know. Well, if you have a beach in the
- 1:45:55city, you have to expect tsunamis.
- 1:45:57That's just a given. Well, True.
- 1:45:59True. Right.
- 1:46:03True. OK, so that's why you got 8
- 1:46:11minutes to get to higher ground. Not always 8 minutes, Not always
- 1:46:148 minutes. You sometimes you have 30
- 1:46:16minutes. Like somewhere.
- 1:46:18Tsunamis. You can have a torn earthquake
- 1:46:21in Russia, right off the border of Russia and it takes 2 1/2
- 1:46:23hours to get to you. Sometimes you can have one right
- 1:46:26off the beach and you have no warning so.
- 1:46:28Isn't 8 minutes the warning? No, that's.
- 1:46:30OK. Is it when you first see it?
- 1:46:32No, it depends on where the earthquake is that causes
- 1:46:35tsunami. The further away it is, the more
- 1:46:37time you have. But if you have one right there
- 1:46:39on the beach or close to the beach, you have a minute.
- 1:46:45Well, I mean would. Yeah, you're not going to see
- 1:46:49one. What a tsunami by the beach.
- 1:46:50Be as big since it's right there closer to ground.
- 1:46:54No, it's not about being big. Listen, if you're further away,
- 1:46:58it travels like a sun wave and. Well, yeah, and then it gets
- 1:47:01bigger as it goes. If it's by the beach, if it's.
- 1:47:04Closer to the beach. That's what I'm saying.
- 1:47:06It creates the tsunami wave and it's going to be higher because
- 1:47:10I don't have a chance to dissipate now.
- 1:47:14Now, what's really cool about Tsunami?
- 1:47:15I thought it was is small sound wave and then it gets bigger as
- 1:47:20it goes farther and then when it hits ground that's when it.
- 1:47:24Starts to well, what actually happens is as the ground starts
- 1:47:27going up, the wave that's underneath starts to get pushed
- 1:47:31out of the water. No, it gets pushed out of the
- 1:47:33water. And depending on how much force
- 1:47:35is behind it will determine how far it goes and and do you know
- 1:47:38how to tell if you're on the beach now to tell if there's a
- 1:47:41tsunami is coming. Let's see if JJ knows the
- 1:47:42answer. Do you know how to tell if
- 1:47:44there's a tsunami coming if you're standing on the beach?
- 1:47:48Yeah, I know how, but I want to see you, JJ.
- 1:47:50And of course, it goes away from you because the earthquake's
- 1:47:53there and it goes again. But if you're standing on the
- 1:47:55beach and there's a tsunami coming in, how can you tell
- 1:48:06that's it? You know what she means?
- 1:48:10Yeah. You're literally on the beach
- 1:48:11and the water is going away from you.
- 1:48:14So what's happening is this tsunami is pushing the water up
- 1:48:17and it's sucking. All the water, yeah.
- 1:48:19And then takes it back to you. Yeah.
- 1:48:21Right. So, yeah, so if you're on the
- 1:48:23beach and you see that happening, run that.
- 1:48:25That's your warning. Get out of there.
- 1:48:28In 2004, when the tsunami hit Indonesia, I was even born.
- 1:48:40December 2004 tsunami There was nothing where that was 2, 1000.
- 1:48:484 tsunami and it's an Indian. Phuket, PHUKUKET.
- 1:48:57No, Indonesia. Sumatra.
- 1:49:00OK. What's the date on that?
- 1:49:04December 26th. OK, 2004, this is not funny.
- 1:49:08Let me let me preface this, it's not funny.
- 1:49:11Our father, well, my father was murdered over Christmas.
- 1:49:14Yeah, I'm like our father. And we, we found out on December
- 1:49:1726th and we got to the city and we got there and they're like,
- 1:49:20it'll be the second story on the news tonight.
- 1:49:23And I'm like, what's more important than someone being
- 1:49:25murdered? And they said this tsunami, they
- 1:49:27killed 100,000 people. That's why I know the date. 8.8
- 1:49:32magnitude. It was huge.
- 1:49:33It was huge. It was huge and.
- 1:49:37It's like 10 minutes. Wow.
- 1:49:38Yeah, and people saw it coming and they didn't do anything.
- 1:49:42They just did all the resource that were on the beach there.
- 1:49:45Yeah, that's why so many people like no one did anything. 227
- 1:49:49what? 2028 What 228,000 to.
- 1:49:53Casual no yeah, but I'm saying that at first it was like
- 1:49:56100,000 just poof with so yeah December 26th 2004 I remember
- 1:50:01that very that day in my mind will live in infamy all right so
- 1:50:05anyway use technology to do some of this stuff here and the final
- 1:50:10burn for today is. The final take from today's
- 1:50:22discussion is your boss isn't a mind reader.
- 1:50:26Manage up by being the most reliable, proactive and
- 1:50:29solutions oriented person on their team.
- 1:50:32Let's get back to the Murph Man and Connor and wrap up the show.
- 1:50:37Your boss is not a mind reader. Manage up by being the most
- 1:50:42reliable, proactive and solutions oriented person in the
- 1:50:45room. If you guys follow that advice,
- 1:50:48you'll, you'll see a lot like you'll learn a lot.
- 1:50:51So let me tell you, that's it for today's show.
- 1:50:53You guys, we will see you next week.
- 1:50:58Next week we will be here live again every 12:00 PM Eastern, 10
- 1:51:04AM mountain on military broadcast radio.
- 1:51:09And next week's episode is hold on.
- 1:51:13Oh, jeez, I had it and I closed the window when I was moving to
- 1:51:17it. It's not letting me go to it.
- 1:51:28That's crazy. What?
