Transcript
- 0:00It's bonus time here on the Gill Connections podcast.
- 0:03In an effort to increase communication, empathy and
- 0:06understanding around the country, we're going to be
- 0:08running a new episode every day interviewing a coach, a high
- 0:12school coach from every state, and yes, even you, Washington,
- 0:16DC with explaining how the state qualifying system works in their
- 0:21state. We'll be talking with a local
- 0:23state expert on how many classes, private versus public
- 0:27schools, what events and what is the process?
- 0:30Is it areas, districts, regionals, state meet?
- 0:34Is it a descending order list? Are there fun things that you do
- 0:38a little differently? Like maybe you, I don't know,
- 0:41maybe you do double points for relays looking at you Texas.
- 0:45And then we're also going to get to the bottom of is it the state
- 0:48meet or do you qualify for states?
- 0:50So check us out every day here at April and May of 2024 as we
- 0:54run through each state with a local state expert.
- 0:57So let's get started right now. All right, here we go.
- 1:10We continue to travel the country and in search of every
- 1:14outdoor state meet and how they accomplish that and get to their
- 1:18athletes into the state meet. We are having a blast.
- 1:20I hope you've been following us from the beginning.
- 1:22We're going Alabama all the way through Wyoming, all 51,
- 1:26including you, Washington, DC And today I'm super excited to
- 1:30have Mr. O'Shea Davenport from Spartanburg High School in the
- 1:33great state of South Carolina. O'Shea, thanks for being here
- 1:35today, man. Thank you for inviting me.
- 1:38Hey, you know, as we continue to do this, this type of series,
- 1:41which I think is going to be and hopefully by now in South
- 1:44Carolina, we'll know because we'll have, you know over half
- 1:46of our states done. Doesn't happen without servant
- 1:49leaders like yourself stepping up.
- 1:50I mean this is a you're representing the whole state.
- 1:53You know, if if you say something wrong, all the coaches
- 1:56from South Carolina could be like, OK, that's not how we do
- 1:58it. What are you talking about?
- 1:59So I'm just so grateful that you'd step up and show
- 2:02leadership to join us on this really, really important
- 2:04valuable series that we're, we're working through.
- 2:06So thank you so much, man. Really great.
- 2:08Very grateful for the opportunity.
- 2:10Absolutely. Well, let's get to know you a
- 2:12little bit better here. O'Shea, why don't you give us a
- 2:1432nd, 30,000 foot level who you are.
- 2:18Why should someone in Washington be listening to you for the
- 2:21state of South Carolina? Give yourself some some St. cred
- 2:23my friend. All right, this is my six year
- 2:26coaching on the high school level.
- 2:29Originally I went to Charleston Southern University.
- 2:31I did a volunteer year out there.
- 2:34And then after that, I just kind of realized that coaching was
- 2:36something that I loved. It's something that I still
- 2:39wanted to be a part of. So then I got involved in
- 2:41Charleston at Fort Dorchester before moving back to my alma
- 2:44mater at Spartanburg High School.
- 2:46So now it feels good to give back to a program that kind of
- 2:49gave everything to me where I met a lot of great friends from
- 2:52great mentors and everything. So I really respect South
- 2:55Carolina track and you know, my goal with other coaches is to
- 2:59help elevate track and field in South Carolina to where it's
- 3:03respected amongst the United States as a state to get
- 3:05recruited by. Well, there are, I'm going to
- 3:08say a handful. There's a handful that I know
- 3:10of. I know there's certainly way
- 3:11many more South Carolina coaches that are really doing exactly
- 3:16what you're saying you're you're in that handful of Shay of, you
- 3:19know, South Carolina, the small states.
- 3:20So maybe it kind of gets overlooked and some of our other
- 3:22states. But boy, I tell you what, at
- 3:24least on Twitter, I see a lot of things going on in South
- 3:27Carolina, including some amazing meets.
- 3:29And of course your coaches are putting out some amazing
- 3:31athletes. So you guys are at least
- 3:34starting off correctly and helping build up South Carolina
- 3:36high school track and field. All right, my man, let's get
- 3:39into it. Let's learn about the great
- 3:41state of South Carolina. O'Shea, we're learning.
- 3:44Not many, but some states, they have a separate organizing body
- 3:48for private schools and a separate one for public schools.
- 3:51The private schools go on to their own state meet, public
- 3:53schools go on over here to their own state meet more common.
- 3:56Public schools and private schools are competing together
- 3:59all after the same mission of the same state.
- 4:01Meet What are we doing in South Carolina Public and private
- 4:03schools? It kind of just depends on our
- 4:07private schools. They do have their own league,
- 4:10Schiza SEISA, that they can be in.
- 4:14But I know like a lot of charter schools and stuff in private
- 4:17schools, they are a part of the South Carolina High School
- 4:20League. So they do participate in our
- 4:23state championships, our state qualifiers, everything that a
- 4:28general. Public school does the private
- 4:31schools, they can take part in that as well.
- 4:33So it's not really like a separate thing unless they
- 4:36choose to do that. Got it.
- 4:38Perfect. OK, Let's talk about how we chop
- 4:41up our different divisions here in South Carolina.
- 4:43Some people call them divisions, classes, How many?
- 4:45I'm going to call it classes, You correct me.
- 4:47How many classes are we doing in South Carolina?
- 4:50Currently we have 1A to 5A and is that so, so it's so you call
- 4:55it 1A2A3A that kind of thing. Yes, Sir.
- 4:59OK. And which one is the larger
- 5:01enrollment? Is that one or five?
- 5:035A is the larger enrollment. Got it?
- 5:05OK, so every year, five boys teams are are going to earn A
- 5:10state championship title and five girls teams are going to
- 5:13win A state championship title, correct?
- 5:15Perfect. All right.
- 5:16Let's talk about how we do that All around the country.
- 5:20The first round is called regional sectionals, areas,
- 5:24divisionals, all these different names.
- 5:25What's the name of the first round in South Carolina?
- 5:29As regions we got regions and do we have another round or is the
- 5:34next meet the state meet? The next meet is the state
- 5:38qualifiers, and then it's the state meet.
- 5:40OK, so we've got a A3 system here.
- 5:43We got regions, State, Qualifier and then state.
- 5:46Yes, but our state qualifier is split up between.
- 5:50Upper and lower state too. OK, we'll get to that one.
- 5:52First, let's get, let's keep going with regions here.
- 5:54So how do I enter my kids into regions?
- 5:58And So what I mean by that is, do I only get 3 per event?
- 6:02Is there a qualifying time that can give me, you know, four or
- 6:05five of kids if they qualify? How do I enter into regions?
- 6:09So every school gets 4 athletes that they can enter in the
- 6:12regions. That's regardless of time or
- 6:15anything, Just whoever your top four kids are.
- 6:17You just entered them into the regional meet and that's who
- 6:20competes. So 4 per event.
- 6:22So if I have 5 stud quarter Millers, my fifth one needs to
- 6:26figure out the 200 or the 800 or relay or some other event.
- 6:30There's no possible way to get a fifth person into regions.
- 6:34Correct. Got it.
- 6:35OK, now once I get to regions, sounds like I my goal is to get
- 6:40to the state, qualify and meet. What do I got to do at regions
- 6:43to get there? So from region, they take the
- 6:47top four from every region they auto qualify And then recently
- 6:54in the last two years we've added eight bids.
- 6:58So the next top eight out there, those top four.
- 7:04So I guess right now that's 32 athletes and they take eight
- 7:07more to make it 40. So top 4, I'm secure.
- 7:12I am going on to next week to the state qualifier and then
- 7:15they take all these regions results, put them together kind
- 7:18of in a descending order list and the net the top eight that
- 7:22did not qualify in the auto. They also move on to the next
- 7:27week's state qualifying. Correct.
- 7:29Awesome. OK, so I did it.
- 7:31I got, I got regions. I either got top four or I was
- 7:34one of the top eight in each event.
- 7:35That did not qualify. I go into state qualifying.
- 7:38What do I got to do there to go to the big dance in a week?
- 7:41So from there we have upper and lower state.
- 7:45So where they do four first is the top four from each they
- 7:49automatically qualify and then they combine the results again
- 7:52and then they take 8. So in our state meets, they're
- 7:5516 athletes in two heats. So you kind of do a, you call it
- 8:00upper and lower state. So you divide the state kind of
- 8:02in two for for your state qualifying meet, you call it
- 8:07correct. And then there I have a very
- 8:09similar to my regions, I've got top four.
- 8:11So if I make top four in the event, perfect.
- 8:13You're going on to the to the state meet and then I take all
- 8:16the rest of those results put them in a descending order list
- 8:18and I have 8 bids again that get to go on.
- 8:22I like that. That's cool.
- 8:23One of the main concerns we're hearing from coaches around the
- 8:26country is how do we get the best kids to the state meet
- 8:29regardless of where they happen to live.
- 8:31You know they didn't choose what region to live in and everybody
- 8:34else who's fast who also chose to live there.
- 8:36So how do we still get them state?
- 8:37Cool. All right.
- 8:38Well let's. Yeah, we've got it.
- 8:39We. This is really awesome.
- 8:40Regions top 4 + 8 auto qualifier.
- 8:43Bids. State qualifying, same thing,
- 8:45Top 4 + 8 bids going to the state meet.
- 8:48Let's talk about the state meet. We've got 10 state meets going
- 8:52on five boys and five girls. Are we doing all of them in the
- 8:56same weekend at the same venue? Tell us about that venue.
- 8:59How many days is the meet? Talk to us about the state meet.
- 9:03So recently it changed to where they use two venues.
- 9:06They use Spring Valley High School and Lower Richland High
- 9:09School. Generally the days flop based on
- 9:13the previous year, so if somebody was Friday, Friday one
- 9:16year, they'll be like Saturday the next year.
- 9:20And then they do one like 1A may go in the morning, then the
- 9:26other A may go in like the afternoon session and it's a two
- 9:30day meet. So it just kind of depends on
- 9:34where you get kind of stuck at on that weekend type of thing to
- 9:37figure out the two days that you go.
- 9:39But it's normally opposite of before perfect.
- 9:42So we're going, we're going to flip flop the actual schedule
- 9:44and that schedule is two different venues.
- 9:47So are we doing 1-2 and three at 1 venue and 4:00 and 5:00 at the
- 9:51other? That's what happened this year.
- 9:54But they may swap because it was the first year.
- 9:57I think they've done it. I'm at two different venues, so
- 10:00it may swap. It just kind of depends on what
- 10:02our governing body like kind of decides and stuff like that.
- 10:05Got it. And let's use the example of 1-2
- 10:07and three at 1 venue. Did I hear you say so it's a two
- 10:11day meet, Friday and Saturday. Did I hear you say they do all
- 10:14the one day of what? I mean all all the scheduled
- 10:16events for Friday? We know they're not doing all
- 10:18the events. Maybe they're doing, you know, a
- 10:19couple field events, maybe some prelims, maybe a distance event
- 10:23and then you do all finals on the Friday or on the Saturday.
- 10:26Are they doing all 1A back-to-back to back and then 2A
- 10:30back-to-back to back and then 3A?
- 10:31Or are they mixing it? Meaning the 100 meter dash is
- 10:34scheduled at noon and it's going to be the 1A girls, 2A girls, 3A
- 10:38girls hundreds and then 1A boys, 2A boy, 3A boys hundred.
- 10:43Are they combining them or keeping them separate state
- 10:45meets? They're separate and.
- 10:49So it used to be like that to where they might have ran them
- 10:51both back-to-back, but now it's actually it's actually a one day
- 10:55meet that are debating going back to two days.
- 10:57Originally we did a two day meet where it was like 4 by 8 in
- 11:00field events and then Sprint events, but now they just run
- 11:03everything on one day. Since it's not that many kids at
- 11:05the state meet, they just run straight through it.
- 11:08So they're running Friday all 1A.
- 11:10Somebody, someone, someone is going to be a state champion
- 11:13team at the end of Friday. And then let's say the three A
- 11:17is on Saturday, at the end of Saturday through the the 1A has
- 11:20already been crowned. On Friday, it'll be just the 3A
- 11:23or the 2A, depending on where they put those those
- 11:25individuals. OK, got it.
- 11:26Perfect, perfect. Love that.
- 11:28All right. Some states we're learning, A
- 11:30lot of states actually are adding some type of adaptive
- 11:34unified wheelchair type events to their state meet series,
- 11:37anything like that right now in South Carolina.
- 11:40I haven't heard about them adding it to the state meet.
- 11:44I know that that we've recently started discussing about it just
- 11:49recently I think a coach from Burns we have.
- 11:51We use Sports U for the host state of South Carolina.
- 11:54So all the track coaches in South Carolina is one app where
- 11:58everything is located if somebody wants to have a meet.
- 12:01Anything like that, we all can kind of see what's going on in
- 12:03the state. So it's a nice collaborative
- 12:06app. And I know a coach from Burns,
- 12:08he posted about, you know, coaches who are interested in it
- 12:11to please reach out to him. So I think right now they're in
- 12:14the process of coming up with different ways for that and
- 12:17stuff like that. You know, one of the major
- 12:19reasons we took on this, you know, really gargantuan, you
- 12:22know, to schedule 51 coaches, that's hard.
- 12:25By the way, they're all high school coaches too.
- 12:27They're they're all teachers and family member that's so tough so
- 12:31but one of the major reasons we started this was to increase
- 12:34conversation amongst states. You just said something that I
- 12:37think maybe I want to make sure other states here say the name
- 12:40of that app that so all South Carolina coaches is it just
- 12:44track? Is it all sports?
- 12:46But you you seem to have like a dedicated app that you can
- 12:48communicate with a coach across the state to to collaborate and
- 12:51and ideas and things like that. Yeah, so it's called sports you
- 12:56right now it's tracking cross country coaches that are in the
- 12:59app. Like let's say if we are hosting
- 13:01a meet, we can say these are our meet days, they can post it.
- 13:04Someone's looking for a coach, they can post that in there any
- 13:08any big meet like state they post a qualifier.
- 13:11So it's just one big app where we can kind of communicate and
- 13:14everything. So it's it's extremely helpful.
- 13:16Sports you like sports and the letter you or sports you and why
- 13:20so sports the letter you. So if someone were to go.
- 13:22Would sports why you. Sports YOU.
- 13:25OK. So if someone wanted to go and
- 13:27kind of just check it out and see if they could maybe bring it
- 13:29to their state they can go. It's an app that you can go look
- 13:31at the app and sports YOU perfect.
- 13:33That's awesome man. That's that's that's good value
- 13:35there. All right O'Shea.
- 13:36So we've got. I'm going to use the the what,
- 13:39What event should I use? I I, I I tend to stick to the
- 13:41same events I want to I want to go to a different event.
- 13:43This time we've got five different pole vault boys state
- 13:47championships because we have five classes and we have 5 girls
- 13:51pole vault state champions. Some states whether it's
- 13:53officially through their Athletic Association or
- 13:56unofficially through a coaches association or sometimes it's
- 13:59just a group of coaches that get together to do this.
- 14:01They'll invite the the top one or two, three per event for each
- 14:06class. Bring them all together and find
- 14:08out air quotes here who the true state champion is, a meet of
- 14:11champions if you will. Anything like that going on
- 14:13right now? The biggest thing I think we
- 14:17kind of have to meet a champions is called our coaches Classic
- 14:21elite meet. So let's say early in March.
- 14:27They're different districts. I guess whatever district you're
- 14:32assigned to, your school goes to.
- 14:34From there, they take the top 16 results from all combined, and
- 14:40those top 16 kids go from a coach's.
- 14:43Classic qualifier to coaches, Classic, elite.
- 14:47And that's regardless of classification and all that.
- 14:50So that's kind of the closest thing to that that we have.
- 14:54So I guess it's kind of like the pre state meet before the state
- 14:57meet, but it's everyone from every classification that
- 15:01participates in that meet. Do you do a team aspect to that
- 15:04as well or is it all individual on that one?
- 15:06It's all individual. Yeah.
- 15:08Yeah, that's cool. I love that.
- 15:09All right, let's talk about the events that you're doing there
- 15:11in South Carolina. We'll go kind of group by group.
- 15:13We can assume you're doing the 124 and the eight for the boys
- 15:16and girls. All right.
- 15:18Are we doing in these next two events, are we doing the 1632,
- 15:21the mile, two mile, the fifteen 3000?
- 15:23What are you doing the next two there?
- 15:241632, That's the most common. We've got the 110 high hurdles
- 15:28for boys. 100 high hurdles for girls.
- 15:30Yep. All right.
- 15:31We're doing the 300 hurdles. We do 400 hurdles, you know,
- 15:35that's why I said that with a question mark, 400 hurdles, how,
- 15:38how long? And you know, I'm not going to
- 15:40pin you down to a specific date, but is that relatively new?
- 15:43Has that been as far as you can remember?
- 15:46As far as I remember I ran in 2011 and we did have 400
- 15:50hurdles. So I would say probably mid
- 15:542000, early 2000s or maybe off top of my head, I love it.
- 15:59We've got a few states out there that's, that's really, I love
- 16:01that. All right, let's talk about
- 16:03relays. We know you're doing the four by
- 16:04one and four by four because if you weren't doing those two
- 16:07relays, you wouldn't be doing track and field and you wouldn't
- 16:09be on this podcast. What other relays might we be
- 16:12doing? We have the four by 8, 4 by 8.
- 16:15No Sprint medley, four by two. Anything like that?
- 16:184 by 1, four by four and four by 8.
- 16:21Yep, got it. Three were nice.
- 16:24Three realize. Yep, Got it.
- 16:25Let's go to our field events. Long jump and triple jump for
- 16:28boys and girls. Yes.
- 16:30Awesome shot put and discus. Boys and girls.
- 16:32Yep. Pole vault and high jump.
- 16:33Boys and girls. Correct.
- 16:35Anything else? Hammer.
- 16:37Javelin. Steeple Multis.
- 16:39We just added Javelin like a couple years ago, So two or
- 16:42three years ago it became an official event.
- 16:44Love that. Love South Carolina.
- 16:47This South Carolina is a great poster child, if you will, for
- 16:52other states that are thinking about adding javelin and they
- 16:55have this excuse and this excuse and this excuse.
- 16:57South Carolina coaches found a way.
- 17:00Idaho's adding again, if you've been watching, listening to our
- 17:02whole series, you've heard all these states that have added.
- 17:04There's a lot of states that have been adding great job to
- 17:07South Carolina coaches for adding the Javelin way to give
- 17:09more opportunity for your kids for the next level.
- 17:12They're awesome job to all of you out there.
- 17:14So like that meet of champions, some states with these not
- 17:19official state meet events, we'll do an unofficial state
- 17:21meet a week or two later in the multis, the hammer, etcetera,
- 17:25anything like that that you're aware of.
- 17:27We don't have anything like that, but we do have, I guess we
- 17:31have a growing a a UUSATF scene. So a lot of times after the
- 17:37state meet one of the one of those teams try to host a meet
- 17:41like that to where kids can do multis and stuff like that.
- 17:44Awesome. Love it.
- 17:44O'Shea, before we get to a couple of fun questions anything
- 17:47else that we should know that's uniquely South Carolina for
- 17:51outdoor track and field you you double your relay points you you
- 17:56run the four by four at midnight because that's some reason a
- 17:59South Carolina tradition, I don't know.
- 18:00You only score six of the state meet.
- 18:02Anything unique that we should be aware of that I didn't ask?
- 18:06I don't think we do anything unique.
- 18:08I think it's pretty standard to the standard scoring system.
- 18:13We don't have any outlandish like relays like 4 by two or
- 18:16spent Med or DMR. I think the craziest thing we do
- 18:20is 400 hurdles. Yeah, that is.
- 18:22That's crazy. Yeah, other than that, I mean,
- 18:24it's pretty straightforward. Like any other.
- 18:28Meet no double points, none. None of none of that nature.
- 18:32None of those shenanigans. Awesome.
- 18:34Great. All right.
- 18:35Hey, so help us settle a debate here, O'Shea.
- 18:38You know, at least in your area, your culture, your bus going to
- 18:42the track meet. When you talk about the state
- 18:44meet, do your kids qualify for state, for states, Just for the
- 18:49state meet? How do you say this?
- 18:50Help us with this debate here. Oh it just kind of depends on
- 18:54the mood I'm I'm in I guess like I might say like you got to
- 18:58qualify for the state meet if I'm like talking to the kids.
- 19:02But I guess it was more of like a motivation thing.
- 19:04I'm not like you're trying to get to the state meet.
- 19:06I'm like we're trying to get to state when we get to state we
- 19:09have to compete. But probably talking to like
- 19:12just a general conversation. I'm I'm like the state meet is
- 19:14next week but if I'm like trying to motivate them, hike them up,
- 19:17I'm like hey, we got to get to state we got to do we got to
- 19:19handle this, this, this and this.
- 19:21Before we get there, you know, state is our ultimate goal.
- 19:24So in the case of hyping, I guess in a unprofessional term,
- 19:30I say state, but if I'm being more formal about it, I'd say
- 19:32state meat. Now I gave you three options.
- 19:35I just want to make sure because someone is keeping track of all
- 19:37these states. I just, I just know that, yeah,
- 19:39yeah, OK. That's what I want to clarify.
- 19:40I heard state. I heard state meat.
- 19:42I did not hear states with the nest there.
- 19:46Yes, I don't say state. Love it, love it, love it.
- 19:50All right, O'Shea, you've done a great job helping us learn more
- 19:52about the outdoor State meet series there in South Carolina.
- 19:55You win the prize, my friend. You win the magic wand.
- 19:58If you could change one thing and only one thing, my friend,
- 20:01that you think would help elevate the experience of
- 20:04outdoor high school track there in South Carolina, it could be
- 20:07adding an event. It could be the State meet goes
- 20:09to a four day meet. I don't know.
- 20:11You tell me what would be that one thing that you might change?
- 20:18I think just me in general will be the culture of track and
- 20:24field outside of track and field that makes sense.
- 20:27Like when someone from the outside is talking about track,
- 20:31I guess if it was like more celebrated, more respected to
- 20:33make our kids feel more proud of what they're doing and their
- 20:38accomplishments because it's not easy making it to that state
- 20:41meet. So just making them feel, you
- 20:44know, proud. Like, you know, I did this.
- 20:46I worked hard for this. You know, it's like catching
- 20:49that touchdown and to to win a game like, you know, it's that
- 20:51important when the school jumps up and cheer for them because
- 20:54just know that they're backed and that they have the support
- 20:57from their peers, from people that they look up to within the
- 21:01school. So I guess just a culture of
- 21:03track and field, if I could change that to where you know
- 21:06those stands are packed, you know they're those kids are
- 21:08being championed and you know they they they love track and
- 21:13field and they understand how it has like changed their life
- 21:16because so many people support them in it and everything.
- 21:19So I think that would be the only thing.
- 21:21I can honestly say all of us at Guild Athletics would 100%
- 21:25cosign on that. That's exactly right.
- 21:27That's what we do, uplifting our coaches who do the uplifting of
- 21:30our athletes. That might be easily my most
- 21:33favorite magic wand answer right there.
- 21:36I think that's exactly right. Culture is hard to change, but
- 21:38you know what? And I know you know this O'Shea
- 21:40is a leader yourself. It starts with you and your
- 21:43community and community of coaches that you have there in
- 21:46the state of South Carolina. And I believe if anybody can do
- 21:48it. But you guys certainly can.
- 21:50You guys are leaders along the way.
- 21:52So I expect to see more of that from you guys there in the great
- 21:55state of South Carolina. I love that.
- 21:56It's very good. Thank you, O'Shea.
- 21:58Thank you so much, man. This has been awesome.
- 22:00You know, as we continue to go, all 51 including you,
- 22:02Washington, DC, it's just absolutely thrilling to see the
- 22:06differences. Love that you do the 400
- 22:08hurdles. Love that you do the javelin.
- 22:09And I love that you have every excuse not to do those events
- 22:12and yet you leaders out there do it.
- 22:14So I love that very much. So thanks for being here today
- 22:16for us, O'Shea. And thanks for you guys
- 22:17listening if you haven't caught up.
- 22:19Go back starts with Alabama going all the way to Wyoming.
- 22:22All 51, including DCI. Hope you're enjoying this as
- 22:25much as I am. See you guys tomorrow,
- 22:26everybody.
