- 0:08So let's read. Let's pray and then we'll read.
- 0:11Father, I want to thank you so much for this
- 0:13wonderful letter. I pray that, Lord, that as
- 0:15we open up your word and we finish this chapter
- 0:18of 1 Peter 3, that we'd really grasp the importance
- 0:22and understanding of why we suffer. and the reality
- 0:30of the sacred, that we would really grasp the
- 0:34importance of the payment you paid and our future
- 0:41in you. Lord, we do praise you and thank you
- 0:43for your faithfulness and goodness. In Jesus'
- 0:45name, amen. Finally, all of you have unity of
- 0:50mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart,
- 0:54and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil
- 0:59or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary,
- 1:02bless. For to this you were called and that you
- 1:07may obtain a blessing. For whoever desires to
- 1:10love life and see good days, let him keep his
- 1:13tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
- 1:16Let him turn away from evil and do good and let
- 1:19him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of
- 1:22the Lord are on the righteous. And his eyes are
- 1:25open to their prayers. But the face of the Lord
- 1:29is against those who do evil. Now, who is there
- 1:33to harm you if you are zealous for what is good?
- 1:37But even if you should suffer for righteousness
- 1:39sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them,
- 1:44nor be troubled. But in your hearts, honor Christ,
- 1:47the Lord is holy. Always being prepared to make
- 1:51a defense to anyone. who asks you for a reason
- 1:55for the hope that is in you. Yet do it with gentleness
- 1:59and respect, having a good conscience, so that
- 2:02when you are slandered, those who revile your
- 2:06good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.
- 2:09For it is better to suffer for doing good, if
- 2:13that should be God's will, than for doing evil.
- 2:16For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous
- 2:19for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to
- 2:22God, being put to death in the flesh, but made
- 2:27alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed
- 2:31to the spirits in prison, because they formerly
- 2:35did not obey when God's patience waited in the
- 2:39days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared.
- 2:43in which a few, that is eight persons, were brought
- 2:47safely through the water. Baptism, which corresponds
- 2:51to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt
- 2:55from the body, but as an appeal to God for a
- 2:59good conscience through the resurrection of Jesus
- 3:01Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the
- 3:05right hand of God, with angels, authorities,
- 3:08and powers having been subjected to him. So a
- 3:13couple of things I want us to really make sure
- 3:15that we're paying attention to as we're dealing
- 3:17with this. And I did this sermon in three particular
- 3:23principles. As you guys have noticed over the
- 3:26last several years, we've been doing an expository,
- 3:31exegetical synopsis of the letters. The reason
- 3:39why I'm doing that is because in order for us
- 3:40to really start grabbing and digging in deep,
- 3:43we need to understand why, hermeneutically, why
- 3:46the letter was written, the context by which
- 3:50it was written, and the context by which Peter
- 3:53is talking in order to ensure that the context
- 3:56by which he wrote the letter is consistent. So
- 4:01we know that specifically this group of people
- 4:04have been scattered, dispersed. They're living
- 4:08in caves and throughout the region. So he gets
- 4:14to this point after he talks to husbands and
- 4:16wives, he gets to this point and he starts to
- 4:17deal with the reality of how we as believers
- 4:20should behave individually, not only specifically
- 4:25on how I live with my family and live around
- 4:27those who are in my community, but also in how
- 4:31we live together as believers. So principle number
- 4:35one. Having the same mind as Christ and being
- 4:39people like -minded, we must live as he lived.
- 4:44Having the same mind of Christ, since we have
- 4:48the mind of Christ, we must be like -minded in
- 4:52the mind of Christ so that we live according
- 4:55to how he lived, obediently. That has been a
- 4:59theme for a while now. Real true biblical obedience.
- 5:05You cannot say you're a believer and not obey.
- 5:08The reality of the fruit of the Spirit is seen
- 5:11in our obedience to Christ. 1 Corinthians 2,
- 5:1416. For who has understood the mind of the Lord
- 5:19so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of
- 5:23Christ. You do have the mind of Christ, which
- 5:26means, as it's stated by Peter in 1 Peter 3,
- 5:308 -12, finally, all of you. Who is all of you?
- 5:35He's talking to everyone in the church. All of
- 5:38you, specifically the brothers and sisters of
- 5:42that day. You have unity of mind. You be of one
- 5:49mind. Be like -minded. How? The mind that we
- 5:55have is Christ's mind. And Christ's mind is about
- 5:58his truth. And so we should be. thinking and
- 6:03living and obeying and believing as he did. And
- 6:09that's really what like -mindedness means. Am
- 6:13I unified in my mind with you? Are we committed
- 6:19and unified in our minds with Christ? He also
- 6:26commands us to have sympathy. The word sympathy
- 6:29is sympathy. There is no other word for sympathy.
- 6:32We can use compassionate, but it's kind of weird
- 6:35to say that you must be like -minded, compassionate,
- 6:38brotherly love, compassionate. Because brotherly,
- 6:42tenderhearted literally means compassionate.
- 6:45So the word sympathy means to have a deep feeling
- 6:49of sorrow, a concern for someone else. And that
- 6:54should be reflected in how we love each other
- 6:57like brothers. Very similar to Jonathan David.
- 7:02They weren't brothers, but they loved each other
- 7:04like brothers. King David and Jonathan were very
- 7:09close. And they stuck closer than a brother.
- 7:13So that's the idea of loving each other like
- 7:16brothers and sisters. We are family after all.
- 7:20Tenderhearted, compassionate. Are we being compassionate,
- 7:23concerned for others in a way that we want to
- 7:27meet the need? And a humble mind. Now what's
- 7:31interesting about this humble mind, it just means
- 7:33to be friendly. Sounds really nice when you read
- 7:37it. Finally, all of you, be like -minded. Show
- 7:42sympathy. Love like brothers. Compassionate and
- 7:47friendly. I like that. It's very practical. And
- 7:53then he says, do not repay evil. The word evil
- 7:55here is wickedness. Do not repay wickedness for
- 7:59wickedness. Or reviling. The word reviling here
- 8:03means insult or slander. Do not insult or slander
- 8:08for insulting and slandering. So if someone insults
- 8:12you and slanders you, do not insult or slander
- 8:14back. That's kind of hard when you watch stuff
- 8:18on TV. Just saying. But we got to be careful.
- 8:25But on the contrary, but instead bless. Now what's
- 8:30interesting about this word bless is to praise.
- 8:34It's one thing to, do you think I'm going to
- 8:36bless somebody by giving them something? It's
- 8:38another to bless somebody with words. And that's
- 8:41really what's implied here. So if we're not repaying
- 8:45wickedness for wickedness, then we're not. slandering
- 8:48and insulting with slander and insults, then
- 8:52what is the opposite of that? Praise. And that's
- 8:55really what this word blessed literally means.
- 8:58Praise. And kids, parents know this. When their
- 9:03kid does something good, what do you do? Insult
- 9:06them. No. You praise them. You give them praise.
- 9:11Like, you did a great job. You know, God is glorified
- 9:15in you because of this. And that's really what
- 9:17he's talking about here. Why? Because we are
- 9:21called. We are summoned to praise. Are we just
- 9:26so quick to condemn and to malign or to slander
- 9:33or to say something wrong or evil about somebody?
- 9:38People get on your nerves. Instead of the first
- 9:41thing that you say is, cursing them how about
- 9:45if the first thing you do is you pray for their
- 9:47issues and then you praise them for what they
- 9:49do that actually is a blessing don't be so quick
- 9:55to curse but be quick to bless and that to you
- 9:57are called why so that you too may obtain praise
- 10:01god loves to praise his children for whoever
- 10:08desires to love life and see good days Let him
- 10:13keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking
- 10:16deceit. Interesting term, keep. This is Psalm,
- 10:22I want to say 43, but I think I'm wrong. Somebody
- 10:26can look that up and let me know. But this is
- 10:29from the Psalms. Whoever desires to, I had it,
- 10:33but it literally just, whoo, right out of my
- 10:35mind. So whoever desires to love life and see
- 10:38good days, let him keep, let him stop. Let him
- 10:41cease his tongue from evil. What's he mean here?
- 10:47It's not to keep my tongue closed in the sense
- 10:50that I'm closing my mouth. It's literally to
- 10:52stop saying evil things. Say things that are
- 11:01blessings, praises. There is a time for rebuke
- 11:07and correction. And that must be done with the
- 11:11Word of God. After all, right, the Word of God
- 11:15was given to us. It's inspired. And it must be
- 11:20used for rebuke and for correction and for training
- 11:23and teaching and righteousness. And so if we
- 11:26want to see good days and we love life, then
- 11:30we should keep our tongue from speaking evil
- 11:32or stop speaking evil and our lips from speaking
- 11:36deceit, saying things that are... Purposely harmful.
- 11:41Notice what it says in verse 11. Let him turn
- 11:43away from evil and do good. In other words, don't
- 11:46do evil, do good. Let him seek peace and pursue
- 11:52it. God's people should be seeking peace. And
- 12:01the reality is, blessed are the peacemakers,
- 12:05for they shall be called sons of God. And we
- 12:08must, at all costs, as we have said over at least
- 12:13a year, to keep the unity of the Spirit in the
- 12:18bond of peace. We must be people who pursue peace.
- 12:25Why? Why should we pursue peace and seek peace
- 12:30and desire peace? For the eyes of the Lord are
- 12:34on the righteous. He is watching you. and his
- 12:38ears are open to their prayer. God hears your
- 12:42cry. That's really what he's saying here. God's
- 12:47eye is on you because you belong to him and his
- 12:50ears are attentive because he hears your cry.
- 12:54But the face of the Lord is against those who
- 12:57do evil. I'm like, I looked at this and I was
- 12:59like, these are actually very common phrases
- 13:03in the Greek and the Hebrew. It's a term to show
- 13:09that real true favor is not based on what you
- 13:14receive. Just because you get something doesn't
- 13:19mean God's favor is on you. Real true favor from
- 13:24God is that his eye is upon us and he hears our
- 13:28cry and that he conforms us and molds us into
- 13:31the image of his son. He is faithful to us. All
- 13:37the other things he does because he's a good
- 13:40father. After all, if earthly fathers who are
- 13:47evil know how to give good gifts to their children,
- 13:50how much more does the heavenly father would
- 13:53give to you who ask? And so this issue, but the
- 13:57face of the Lord is against those who do evil.
- 14:00We kind of understand this. I don't know if you
- 14:02really grasp the reality of the... Of the evil
- 14:06eye. If you guys ever watched. What's that? Five
- 14:13-0 Goes West. You never watched Five -0 Goes
- 14:16West? You got to watch. It's a great children's
- 14:18cartoon. He gives them the stink eye. You know.
- 14:23You know when you're a kid. The kids know. Because
- 14:26when they do something wrong. What do they get?
- 14:33Because mom and dad's face are upon you. That's
- 14:38literally what it means. That God's judgment
- 14:43and wrath are against you because you are evil.
- 14:48You've done something wrong. And so if mom and
- 14:51dad's face are against you, you know, don't run.
- 14:56It will be worse. Second principle, when Christ
- 15:01is sanctified in our hearts and we suffer for
- 15:05what is just and good, it allows us the opportunity
- 15:08to proclaim the truth of Christ. Do we really
- 15:11look at the reality of our suffering as an opportunity
- 15:13to proclaim the gospel? I find it when people
- 15:19are at their very lowest moments, when they feel
- 15:23they're at the end, to preach the gospel even
- 15:31more. It's the greatest desire. But that's the
- 15:35reality of what suffering should do for us. Suffering
- 15:38should not cause us to shrink into a corner.
- 15:42But it should bring us boldly out into the open
- 15:47for all to hear the truth of Christ. And so Romans
- 15:508, 38 and 39. For I am sure neither... Death,
- 15:55nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things
- 15:58present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor
- 16:01height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation
- 16:04will be able to separate us from the love of
- 16:07God in Christ Jesus our Lord. There is nothing,
- 16:10does not matter how bad life gets. The truth
- 16:14is our suffering is our badge. First Peter 3,
- 16:2013 through 16. Now, who is there to harm you
- 16:23if you are? zealous, most eagerly desirous of
- 16:28for what is good. Interesting that this term
- 16:35really means my deepest eager desire to imitate.
- 16:41This word what is not the word what in actually
- 16:45an original language. It literally means to imitate.
- 16:51Mimites is the term. And we get this word to
- 16:55mimic. Are you an imitator of what is good? So
- 17:01if we were to read this this way, it says, now
- 17:05who is there to harm you if you are most eagerly
- 17:10desiring to imitate good? Makes a lot more sense
- 17:16now, doesn't it? It's not that I desire what
- 17:19is good, but that I must imitate the good. I
- 17:21must live it out. And hermeneutically, within
- 17:26the context of what Peter is saying here, that
- 17:29makes a lot of sense. They could have done a
- 17:33little bit better job on the word what? To imitate
- 17:37good. Now, but even if you should suffer for
- 17:42righteousness, that means for what is just, you
- 17:46will be blessed. Why? Because our reward is Christ.
- 17:52Doesn't matter what man may take. There's many
- 17:57evils in our day. Many trying to be in control.
- 18:01And what we're going to read later is that really
- 18:03Christ is in control anyway. Doesn't matter who
- 18:06sits on a throne. There is only one throne worth
- 18:10sitting in. And that only goes to one man, one
- 18:14God. His name is Jesus Christ. Have no fear of
- 18:18them. Interesting. Why should we not fear them
- 18:21who would cause us to suffer, persecute us? Because
- 18:26our reward is Jesus. Nor be troubled. That means
- 18:30to be disturbed. That makes a lot more sense
- 18:33for me too. When I think about the reality of
- 18:37suffering for Christ, there's no need to fear.
- 18:42And there's no need for me to be disturbed. And
- 18:44what happens with many people when they go through
- 18:47very difficult things, they get disturbed. They
- 18:50lose their focus. They don't really want to deal.
- 18:55So they walk away from what is true. And they
- 18:59try to cling on to what is false because they're
- 19:04disturbed in their heart. They're just really
- 19:07not feeling it. But. In your hearts, hagiazo,
- 19:14sanctify, set apart, make holy Christ the Lord.
- 19:20That's really how it should read. Not honor.
- 19:26You must make Christ holy in your heart. He is
- 19:31holy. It's not that we're like it's some type
- 19:35of to bestow. This is an imperative. You are
- 19:43to do it. It's not a suggestion. But in your
- 19:47heart, make holy Christ the Lord. Sanctify Christ
- 19:53the Lord. Set apart Christ the Lord. He is sacred
- 19:57is the understanding here. Why? Because we should
- 20:02always be always being prepared to make an apologia.
- 20:08There is no other word for apologia besides defense
- 20:11or defend. We must make an apologia, a defense
- 20:16to one who asks for the reason or for a reason.
- 20:20The word here, reason, is not reason. It's logos,
- 20:24meaning the word. The word. Who lives in you?
- 20:30Christ. And if Christ is in you, the word is
- 20:34present in you. And if the word is present in
- 20:37you, then you should be prepared to make a defense.
- 20:41It's implied. It's understood. And this is how
- 20:44it should read. If you've made Christ holy, always
- 20:50being prepared to make a defense to anyone who
- 20:52asks for the word of hope that is in you. That's
- 20:57really the understanding here. In this word,
- 21:00hope is joyful and confident expectation. Can
- 21:06you not? Do you not know that you can joyfully
- 21:08and confidently expect that the word of God will
- 21:11do exactly what he says he will do? Of course.
- 21:15So how many times have you come and you were
- 21:18like, someone asked you a question and you don't
- 21:21know how to answer it or you're nervous. Well,
- 21:25how do I share the gospel? Well, he lives in
- 21:30you. You can share the gospel. I mean, after
- 21:33all. Christ did tell Paul that, listen, I will
- 21:40give you the words to say. I will tell you what
- 21:44to say. Why? Because I'm in you. The logos is
- 21:50present. And we can joyfully and confidently
- 21:53expect that he will do it. And notice, he says
- 21:58this joyful and confident expectation of the
- 22:01word that is in you. But do it with gentleness
- 22:07and respect. Do it with gentleness and respect.
- 22:11Pretty simple. Meekness and reverence. Meekness
- 22:16and reverence. The idea of reverence towards
- 22:18Christ and reverence towards those who are in
- 22:22the image of God, the image bearer. Having a
- 22:26good conscience. If I am joyfully. If I am joyfully
- 22:33and confidently expecting that the word of God
- 22:36will do what he says he will do and the word
- 22:38of God will do what it says it will do, then
- 22:41I can know with a good conscience so that when
- 22:45you are slandered, those who revile or insult
- 22:50you, insult your good behavior in Christ may
- 22:55be put to shame. They have nothing to say. The
- 22:57reality is if I'm really truly living out the
- 23:00word of Christ in me and through me, then they
- 23:04have nothing to say, though they will try. And
- 23:07we see this a lot, especially today. Let them
- 23:11say whatever they want to say. The reality is
- 23:14my life is clearly above reproach because I live
- 23:17obediently to the word of God. That should be
- 23:19what we're thinking. And committed to. And I
- 23:23don't need to be perfectly doing it. But I need
- 23:25to be intentionally doing it. Because Lord knows
- 23:31sometimes my thoughts. And the deep intentions
- 23:35of my heart are wicked. Things I don't see. But
- 23:39thank God for the word. Which judges rightly
- 23:42the thoughts and intentions of man's heart. Christ
- 23:46is our hope. We have nothing to fear. You have
- 23:49nothing to fear. At all, ever. This period of
- 23:55time that we live on the earth is short. What
- 23:59do you have to fear? What do you lose? In reality,
- 24:03when you die, you go to Christ and you gain him.
- 24:06You already have him now. Hebrews 13, 6. So,
- 24:12we can confidently say, the Lord is my helper.
- 24:16I will not fear. What can man do to me? Nothing.
- 24:21So please let your mom know, Massey, nothing
- 24:25can harm you in Christ. Nothing. She is free
- 24:36in Christ. Doesn't matter what kind of regime
- 24:40she lives under. She is free in Christ. Doesn't
- 24:44matter what man would take away. We are free
- 24:47in Christ. For it is better. The term better,
- 24:52I like English. Not really. Because like better
- 24:56is always less than greater. It's slightly less
- 25:00than best. Which kind of like is frustrating.
- 25:06Because I kind of like greater better than better.
- 25:11And best better than better, but I never really
- 25:13wanted better than greater. Just saying. For
- 25:18it is greater to suffer for doing good, if that
- 25:23should be God's decisions, God's will, than for
- 25:27doing evil. In other words, if I'm going to suffer,
- 25:31it's greater for me to suffer for doing good
- 25:34because it's God's decision that I should suffer
- 25:36for doing good. I mean, that's the whole point
- 25:40of being righteous, living rightly, is that if
- 25:43we should suffer for doing good, that's what
- 25:45God would want anyway. Not that we should suffer
- 25:47for doing badly. What kind of benefit do you
- 25:53receive if you suffer for your sin? But if we
- 25:57suffer for righteousness, what great value is
- 26:00that? For Christ also suffered once for sins.
- 26:03And this is the idea that the reality of the
- 26:06goodness of Christ is that he suffered for doing
- 26:10good for you. So when we think about this, what
- 26:17does Christ say? I lay down my life on my own
- 26:20accord. No one takes it from me. And the goodness
- 26:24of Christ in reality is on display because he
- 26:27suffers for the good, for the will and the purpose
- 26:32of God the Father. It was his decision for Christ
- 26:35to suffer. And that's the implication here. The
- 26:40righteousness for the unrighteous or the righteous
- 26:43for the unrighteous. We who are the unrighteous
- 26:46have become the righteousness of God because
- 26:49of Christ, our righteousness that we might bring.
- 26:53Now this word might bring English. It's English,
- 27:00not so good. So this word might bring is not
- 27:04might bring, kind of bring, sort of kind of bring.
- 27:08And that's what the English is here, sort of
- 27:12maybe, maybe bring. No, this word literally means
- 27:17that he would bring us near to God. What's the
- 27:20purpose of Christ's suffering for the unrighteous
- 27:25so that he, maybe, maybe bring me close to God?
- 27:32It's kind of pitiful. The reality is, is he does.
- 27:38And that's really what Peter is implying here,
- 27:41that the righteous God of all creation brings
- 27:44us near to God. It's not a eh. Okay? Being put
- 27:52to death in the flesh and made alive in the spirit.
- 27:56That's why I don't like the word might, because
- 27:57it clearly says that we are. Verse 19, in which
- 28:03he proclaimed, preached. To the spirits in prison.
- 28:07Now, this word prison means to guard or watch.
- 28:11Literally, that's what it means. And when we
- 28:16read this, you go, oh, he went to hell and he
- 28:18preached to the spirits. Spirits, the word here
- 28:22is pneuma. And it implies a spiritual being.
- 28:27And you and I are spiritual beings. And these
- 28:31are those who are under guard or under watch.
- 28:36So Christ goes and proclaims, he preaches the
- 28:41gospel to those who are under guard and under
- 28:44watch because they formerly did not obey. They
- 28:47did not believe by faith when God's patience
- 28:50waited in the days of Noah. What do we mean?
- 28:56What do we know about Noah's story? We know that
- 28:59Noah preached for how many years? 120 years.
- 29:05He preached the good news. What was the good
- 29:08news? God has commanded me to build an ark. And
- 29:13if you come in, you will be saved. 120 years.
- 29:18God is going to flood the earth. No one ever
- 29:21saw rain. They're like, what is rain? And they
- 29:25didn't believe him. They disobeyed. They rejected
- 29:27the gospel. While Noah. was building the ark.
- 29:35That's what it says here. While the ark was being
- 29:38prepared in which a few, that is eight persons,
- 29:41were brought safely through the water. Why does
- 29:47he use this analogy? Don't you feel like sometimes
- 29:51you feel like Noah? Preaching and preaching and
- 29:55preaching and preaching and it doesn't matter
- 29:56how much you preach the truth of the gospel,
- 29:59they don't want to hear it. You're like, get
- 30:01into Jesus the ark or you're going to die. They
- 30:07just reject it, faithless. They disobey the command
- 30:13to repent and believe the gospel. It's really
- 30:16the issue. What's interesting is these eight
- 30:20persons were brought safely. This word means
- 30:23to bring safely out of God's wrath through water.
- 30:29But they had to be in something to be brought
- 30:32through something. The water is a symbol of the
- 30:36wrath of God. That's what you see here. And the
- 30:41ark is a symbol of their safety. They're saved
- 30:48in the ark. Not floating outside of the ark.
- 30:52Not hanging on by a string on the ark. They have
- 30:57to be in. And that's the gospel, isn't it? And
- 31:01he uses this analogy in verse 21. Baptism, which
- 31:06corresponds to this, now saves you. Now, what
- 31:11baptism? Is it water baptism? No. It's not the
- 31:14water that 12 people got baptized last week in.
- 31:20It's not that kind of a baptism. The baptism
- 31:23means to be immersed into. To be immersed into
- 31:27Christ. The reality of the ark is Christ. Christ
- 31:31is your ark. And we are immersed into Christ.
- 31:35And we are out of the wrath of God. And he saves
- 31:40us through it. Now I want you to get that. This
- 31:44is important here. Especially when you're dealing
- 31:47with end time stuff. Christ is our ark who saves
- 31:51us through the wrath. Not as a removal of dirt,
- 31:57such as we saw, not last week would be an example
- 32:01of emerging in water from the body, but as an
- 32:06appeal to God for good conscience. That if we
- 32:10are in Christ, that we are safe in him, and that
- 32:14as a result, we are before him as not guilty.
- 32:22That God's wrath will not remain on us because
- 32:25we are not children of darkness, but children
- 32:27of light. Not children of wrath, but children
- 32:30of God. And we see this analogy throughout the
- 32:34scripture. So, through the resurrection of Christ,
- 32:39what is the reality of our saveness? The resurrection
- 32:45of Jesus. How can we clarify this? Romans chapter
- 32:516. Romans chapter 6. This is not on my notes.
- 32:58Something that the Lord brought to my mind today.
- 33:00What shall we say then? Are we to continue in
- 33:03sin that grace may abound? By no means. How can
- 33:06we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not
- 33:11know that all of us who were baptized into Christ
- 33:14Jesus were baptized into his death? We are not
- 33:20under the wrath of God because the wrath of God
- 33:23was poured out on the Son. We were in Christ
- 33:27through the wrath. That's the idea here. He took
- 33:33the blunt. In the same way, the ark took the
- 33:37blunt of the flood. We are buried, therefore,
- 33:40with him by baptism into death. So we are no
- 33:45longer objects of wrath. In order that, just
- 33:49as Christ was raised from the dead, by the glory
- 33:52of God the Father, we too may walk in newness
- 33:55of life. Because we are no longer objects of
- 33:58wrath, we are raised with Christ as a new creature.
- 34:05Praise God. So, through the resurrection of Jesus
- 34:11Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the
- 34:16right hand of God, with angels' authorities,
- 34:19powers having been subjected to him. Now I want
- 34:21you to get this. This is one of my sticklers.
- 34:25It's one of my little soapboxes, I think. All
- 34:30authority is given to Christ. All of it. Everything.
- 34:38Every iota, every dot and tittle. Christ is in
- 34:42charge. He is the sovereign king. Christ is king.
- 34:46Period. Does not matter what man says. Does not
- 34:49matter what a preacher says. God is on the throne.
- 34:54And Christ, all angels, all authorities, all
- 34:58powers have been subjected to him. And he says
- 35:02that. All authority has been given unto me. Everything.
- 35:09Nothing happens in the world without the authority
- 35:11and the approval of God the Son. He is in charge.
- 35:17The Father has given this to him because it was
- 35:19his from the beginning. We read that. And we
- 35:23know that, Colossians chapter 1. He created all
- 35:26things by the word of his mouth. He is in control.
- 35:30Don't get it twisted. And we must understand
- 35:35that. Because if you don't understand that, you
- 35:38will continue living a life being defeated. Christ
- 35:45is king and he rules whether we like it or not.
- 35:51So now that we've gotten through chapter 3, I
- 35:57will remind you the key, the absolute key to
- 36:01understanding how to suffer well is for Christ
- 36:06to be Lord, Master, holy in your heart. He is
- 36:12holy. Christ the Lord is holy, and you must sanctify
- 36:18him as holy in your heart. He is, period. That's
- 36:25the key. You want victory? Let Christ live in
- 36:31and through you. Okay? Father, I want to thank
- 36:36you so much for your goodness and faithfulness.
- 36:38Thank you, Lord, for your word. Thank you for
- 36:40what you're doing in our lives. And as we partake
- 36:43in this table, that we would understand the importance
- 36:46of the sacred, that we would reflect in all that
- 36:51we do, you being the Holy One in us. We praise
- 36:57you and thank you. In Jesus' name, amen.
