- 0:06SPEAKER_01: Hello, hello, and welcome to another episode of a really good podcast with Greg and Liz.
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: And today's episode might be our sexiest ever.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Oh wow.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:17SPEAKER_01: I have spent so much time with vampires in the last five days.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: I felt like I was watching porn.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: I felt like I was getting caught watching Pornhub when my kids would start to walk down the stairs.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's parts in like Interview with a Vampire where like, can you imagine being so sexy that like you're kissing someone and they don't even know that they're like passing away?
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: They're like bloody.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: I want to get into this because we are talking about vampires today.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: And the thing that is so interesting about vampires is they run the spectrum.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: From like meaning what?
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: From creepy and stuff?
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: From disgusting monster to stunning, hottest man alive.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: It just an indescribable attraction.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: Not from me personally.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm not talking about myself.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: I'm talking in general.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: Brad Pitt in 1995, probably the hottest guy alive.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: I had a poster.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Him when he does Tristan.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: I even felt like he was hot.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, that's not.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: You're not one to like skimp words when you find a man attractive.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: No.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: I was blown away by Tristan.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: I was like, this is when I my poster I had in college was him when he tips the hat and the water comes off of it right in the beginning.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: You know, in fact, what a move.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: What a what a move.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: But is Brad Pitt a good actor?
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna say something here.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: I think Brad Pitt has picked movies so perfectly.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: I think he's I love Brad Pitt movies.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: But I don't know that he's like a great actor as much as he picks roles that really suit his specific acting type.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, and he does have some diverse traits here.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: But watching this, well, yeah, and like seven was good.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: But I don't know.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: I guess yeah, he has done a lot.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: Sometimes I'm like, is this good acting or is this this guy?
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: The guy's incredible.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: But we're we're now this isn't a Brad Pitt podcast.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: No, this isn't a Brad Pitt podcast, but we will get into that.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: We are talking about vampires.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Let me ask you this.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Going into this, what were your feelings about vampires?
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: And did they change at all in this intense course study that we just did?
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: Well, no, and I'm gonna tell you why.
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: Because my first Halloween costume was a vampire.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: I had a little wig I put on, and it's like it's been popular.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: I've always been into vampires.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: So I've listened to a few episodes of our old Halloween episodes, which are great, by the way.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: If you haven't listened to them, or even if you have, like I didn't remember us talking about any of it, but you talk about how you were Dracula and you made a joke about how it set the tone because of the power alleys.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: Wait, because of the what?
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Because the wig has the power alleys, the like balding the power alleys.
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know what?
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that was my introduction to the Widow's Peak, and I was like, I don't love this.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: I have a big Widow's Peak.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: Somebody made fun of it once in high school, and to this day, I would never have even noticed before or after.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: If the vampire is known for the Widow's Peak, and the vampire is intrinsically sexy, Widow Peak sexy?
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: Well, I don't, I mean, there's a whole group out there for the Bald Brotherhood, so you know.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: Oh, um, trust me.
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: Like, I we're in now.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: We're we're doing okay now.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: No, but like I I've always been so interested in in vampires.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: In fact, like you will talk about we have like great little vampire legends here in Rhode Island, and I have a very interesting story when it comes to that.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: But like, even the the Mercy Brown story, were you gonna talk about that a little bit?
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: So that story is is in Rhode Island, and it's such an interesting story that like Bram Stoker had clippings from the Province Journal in his notes for when he wrote Dracula.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: So that played a role.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, which doesn't really make sense because it really wasn't anything.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: Well, they dug her up, she had blood around her mouth, that kind of thing.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I mean it's it's so interesting because I always thought there was so much more to it.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: And then when I actually looked into it, I was like, oh, so like people just didn't understand the way decomposition works, is pretty much the gist of it.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: Right, but that's how these like so something happens that they don't understand, it's inexplicable to them.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: And so they have to create this like story to so they can go to bed at night and explain it and like have some power and some control, like how do we fight this thing, you know?
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I I just think it's awesome.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: Well, we'll get to we'll cross that bridge when you come to it.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: But yes, I love Dracula.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: I've always loved the Dracula, the novel, because I mean think about it like this.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: Have you ever read Dracula?
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: No.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: Well, it the way it's set up, it's like just notes and letters and like chip logs.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: So it's like it's found footage.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like the original found footage, you know, in a sense.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: So it's like Blair Witch before Blair Witch.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: It's yeah, it's pretty cool, but it's not found footage.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: He just made it up, right?
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: It's like Blair Witch.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: But could have fooled me.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely fooled me.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: What do you think of when you think of a vampire?
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: Like you're it seems like you're a Dracula vampire.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Because when I say it spans a lot of things, there are so many different things that go into it.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: I kept, I was making a list of like all the characteristics and rules and ways to die and everything, and it just kept going and going and going.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: And I'm like adding stuff in that was like, this doesn't even make sense.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: You get into True Blood.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: I watched the first episode of True Blood, which we're not actually gonna talk about because we didn't discuss it, but great series, though.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: It's a great series, but it's it's funny because it's like integrating vampire.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: It it really does, at least to begin with.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: I don't, I think I fell off after like season three or so.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Integrating vampires are like treating them as minorities and like a minority group, and that's what the whole premise of it is is that they found this true blood and it allows them to just live amongst regular people, but they're still fucking weird, yeah.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: And it's yeah, and they still live forever and they can like rip your head off and stuff.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it's like sexy in true well, back to the sexy, but that's part of when they have sex, they like bite each other if you're like dating a vampire.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so what do you think that's about?
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, if you notice in a lot of these movies, you're like, are you having sex or are you biting someone?
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: Because these women, especially in interview with the vampire, were like completely turned on.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: It's like, what is happening right now?
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: No, no, not only are they listen, they're like finished.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: From like getting bit.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, how do you do that?
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: And it's not until they look down and see their dresses covered in blood that they're like, wait a minute.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: They're like, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: This has gone way too far.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: What's that thing on your thumb?
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: I I was caught up in the moment.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: I need a minute.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: And then in the all right, I this Nastaferatu, is that how you pronounce it?
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: Nosferatu, but Nosferatu.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: I kept calling it modis Yahoo, and like I could not like wrap my Nasty as I was like writing my notes.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: He was like basically having sex with her in the movie.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: That was a lot.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a lot.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: It's a lot.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: Okay, so some of the characteristics, we're gonna talk about the characteristics, then we're gonna do a little history on the vamps and just kind of how they got to where they are now in society.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: Characteristics exists on blood, one way or the other.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: There's so many different ways that they do it.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: Like in some of them, like they have animal blood, some of them they get the people, but like you can bite somebody, but you don't kill them.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's like like creating a new one is like a whole process, too.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: When you were doing a little bit of research on vampires, like did you find anything that you or like these characters?
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: Because there's like the obvious ones crucifix, bat, garlic, bat.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, allergic to daylight, bites the wings, sleeps in a coffin, or hangs from the ceiling in the case of Lost Boys, like a bat, no reflections, the long nails.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: Hated every second of that.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: Seeing Brad Pitt with a French manicure was haunting for me.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: But was there anything that stuck out as like, oh, that's different?
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: Well, some of them fly, but not all of them.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: And like so, they do it in a way, like the Lost Boys.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: I thought was interesting that they very obviously fly because they're coming in at like a drone angle, but they never show them flying.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: And I think that was probably a good choice because they didn't have the budget.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: And they didn't want to like look weird.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: And it would have.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: There's no way you're making it in what was it, like 85, 86, something like that.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: Great, great choice.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: It's like the the Jaws thing.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: Like you don't want to see too much.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, yeah, it's a lot scary.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: It wasn't really that scary.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Garlic.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: That I never understood.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: I read something that said it was basically because it's like pungent.
- 8:21unknown: Okay.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, obviously the one that stands out is that the Cullen family glitters in daylight instead of having their face burned off.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: So in the movie, have you seen Twilight?
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: When my favorite thing is the when he's like, This is the skin of a killer, Bella.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: It's like doesn't look like it.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: The skin of a unicorn.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: You look like you're going to the Eras Store, my dude.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: But yeah, no, there wasn't anything that was like, you know, obviously each one has their own little twist.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: And that's what's kind of fun about it.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: It's like these three movies that we watched Interview with a vampire was elegant vampire.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: Then you had Lost Boys, which was like punk rock vampire that likes to terrorize a carnival for some reason.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Well, it's the strip, I guess.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: The Jersey Shore, whatever it is.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: And then not Nosferatu.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: I hated him.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: I hated that.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: Is it a monster?
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: Is disgusting.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: Like, and then you have the glittery Twilight Vampires, and then you have the sexy teen drama vampire diaries.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: And then you have the true blood was weird.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Bill, the main guy, can't believe he was like the hot guy.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: Although Skarsguard.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: Eric the Sheriff was Skarsgard was the hot guy always.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: Anytime you can put a Skarsgard in a movie.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: Although Skarsgard, Bill was Nosferatu.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: Do you know like of the original like Nosferatu?
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: Like the early Yes, I actually watched a little bit of it.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: Spooky.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: It was I couldn't get through that much.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: The silent, I it was hard for me.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: I I kind of like skipped through it.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: Like I fast forwarded a little bit, but there were things about it.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: There is an element of scariness with the silence.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I tried to do like once upon a time, I did like the original Frankenstein when Halloween and the original Dracula.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: Like all well, not when I say original, I mean like the 30s.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: Like the ones that are supposed to be like the universal monsters.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: I'll tell you what, people used to get really scared by those movies.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: They're they're not scary.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: No, it's kind of like even like scary movies, you know, you'll get like scream and stuff like that.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: And I was terrified of that.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: And like, that's not really that scary.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: But it wasn't really very scary.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, what do you expect from these things?
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: Like, they had so little to work with.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: They couldn't even use real sound.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: The original two, they colorized it, the one that I watched, and it looked like it was like tie-dye.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but you know what's you know what?
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: I'm just as you're just mentioning that or talking about that.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: I'm like, well, is that that's probably not a great thing that like that used to scare the shit out of people, like the original Frankassine, the original Nosferatu, whatever.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: And now it's like we they have to do things that are like maybe not even okay for our brains to sort of recognize.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: Like they have to go so over the top with scary to like get a rise out of us.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: It's like one of the scariest things is things that aren't scary at all.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: I listened to our horror movies episode that we did, and we were talking about the children of the corn in one of them, and like that's terrifying, cornfield that like you don't know what's coming around.
- 11:14SPEAKER_02: You know, maybe some weird kid.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: That like we'll kill you because I don't know.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Amish, but they're not Amish in the movie.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: But the band of Amish children or whatever they were.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: Ezekiel, maybe.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, we've talked about this a million times.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: That the scariest thing is just somebody standing there, like in smile when they were out in the parking lot smiling at you, or Michael Myers just standing there and like walking slowly.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Him walking slowly is scarier than anything else you could do.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: Like, dude, you know how like in The Strangers, there's like they have like a bag on their head kind of thing?
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: So I was in a I don't know if this was like someone playing a trick or anything, but I was in a car with someone, a a woman.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: And uh should I say her name?
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: She was a friend.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: I'll just bust her.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: So I was in the car with this with this girl, Katie McNally.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: And we were just like, she would just driving back, but so we're just sitting there, like hanging out, like maybe smoking a cigarette or something like that.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: And in front of the car, someone stopped and they were had a like a bag on their head, like a sack, like a potato set, and they just stopped and they stood there for like four seconds and then they walked away.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Was this on Halloween or around Halloween?
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: I think it was around Halloween.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so they're basically coming for a party and like taking advantage of it.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: Still weird though.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: I know, but like you got to stay in character for that.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: It was like when my friends and I dressed up as the Celtics and we took a basketball to the bar and we were like doing scrimmages in the middle of the bar.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: If you're gonna commit, you need to commit, you know.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this guy committed, but you know, it's easy to commit when you're with a group, but this dude was alone to the bit.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: And like that's such a that's a thing though, that if you were in a horror movie, we would have been like, why didn't you just run him over immediately?
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: At what point do you just run him over?
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: That's the thing.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: Do do I, you know, do I murder this person on the off chance that they're not in a Halloween costume?
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: And then what?
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: I'm in trouble.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and like what if you had a beer before?
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: Then you could get arrested.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: Which I did, you know, which I did.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: So the guy was like, I was not wearing a bag.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because when you were he's like, this is my face.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: All right, so turning vampire, I thought was interesting.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: The ways that you could turn vampire are so different in each of them.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: Well, you feed on somebody, and then you have to make them drink from you after you fed on them, though.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: But then in The Lost Boys, you just drank out of a cup his blood.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but don't you think that's their blood?
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: But then you had to kill someone to officially become a vampire.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: And stay alive, right?
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: Essentially.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: That's why Michael and the girl from the girl from Twister, Jamie Gunn.
- 13:43SPEAKER_02: No, she's from Oh yes, she's the like stick in the mud.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, I didn't recognize.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: I was like, Helen Hunt's not in frigate.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: Lost boys.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: Lost boys.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: They were like half vampires because they hadn't killed anyone yet, so they didn't go all the way.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: She was a looker in that one, huh?
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: How about this?
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: Not to get into Lost Boys.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, but geez, if we say anything, the saxophone in the beginning.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: So Crosby, as we've discussed, is playing saxophone right now.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: And I said, You need to see this.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: And I said, This would actually be a hilarious Halloween costume for you.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: The chain.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: He just needs a baby oil, baby oil, a pair of Dylan's leggings, the chain.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: And just really get into that sax.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: And just I don't think Crosby's definitely not at the level that that guy was, that's for sure.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: And he was like stomping it out.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: I was like, he was into it, and then she was so into it too.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: She was really getting down.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: I was like, yeah.
- 14:33unknown: All right.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: This guy would make a good vampire.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: Wait.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: No, we can't, we can't keep talking about it.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: I have to because I have a few things to say.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: But what is it about that makes them such sexual beings?
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: Do you think it's the hump thing?
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: I think it's the I think it's the idea.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: I I think it's like sort of morphed over time where it's like the seven deadly sins thing.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: It's like it feels good to like the sexiness and all these things.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: And it's just like be careful of that emotion or that drive or that lust because like the path to hell feels like heaven, right?
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: And that's the kind of idea that they're trying to like get across.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: Like just don't get into.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: I think it's a protective thing or like a restrictive thing.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: You tell people stories so that they don't do the it's almost like the urban legends that just was like a really good one and just developed.
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: I think they have like Eastern European like strivoika.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: There's all kinds of like vampire lore.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: Even the Chinese have vampires from like thousands of years ago.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: It's very cool, it's a very like the undead, right?
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: I just think it's it's it's just so interesting.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: I think my answer was a little bit more basic.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: The sucking.
- 15:33unknown: Yeah.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: On on the neck, you know, the neck, the blood, the neck.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, like, there's a reason why it looked like porn because so much of it looks like you would be making out with somebody's neck, essentially.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: So I was also thinking like vampires, what's evil about them that they're constantly consuming.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: I think it's also interesting.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: The only way that they can survive is by killing other people.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: You know, so there's just an inherent kind of moral quandary.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: And I think that that comes up a lot more in like the 90s, 2000s, whatever, when it starts to be like, what if being a vampire isn't awesome?
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: What if they don't love it?
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: What if they, you know, they're the Cullins and they only want to eat animals?
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: You have to be evil to love it.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: I think that's and I think that's why the good guy, the you know, vampire that you want to be on the same side with Edward Collins, the whatever, they all choose to like be vegetarians.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: So you like I don't know if I have the willpower.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I couldn't.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: I would I would just be the worst.
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: I'd probably be like, fuck, I guess I'm gonna eat this person.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: If I was young, I'd be Kirsten Dunst.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: It'd be a spoiled brat.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: Oh man, that's actually a sad story too.
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: Well, what about what about that seven deadly sins?
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: I think the the vampire represents like all the seven deadly sins.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: Lust for sure.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: Yep, gluttony.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: I don't know that I know all the seven deadly wrath, right?
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: So gluttony for sure, wrath, envy in a lot of ways, especially, you know, because maybe they they want to die, maybe in some, but like I think more importantly than all, like the sin of pride, because it's like they put their needs above others, their lives.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: But you have to you have to because you can't even really kill yourself.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Well, I guess you can, but you just stay up, even when they yeah, even when they would try to like wither away and like not eat Tom Cruise.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: He wouldn't he went through it.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: And he was eating like crickets and like salamanders, and he was just like emaciated on a chair, but he wasn't dead.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: I don't want I would never want to do that.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: Anne Rice is like gotta be the best when it comes to the vampires.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: So she's who is she?
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: What has she done?
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: She did an interview with the vampire.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: So she wrote like so she's got the whole I've read like a few of those, uh one being The Vampire Lestat, which is Interview with the Vampire is one of them.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: That's more of Louis's story.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: The vampire stat's also the good one.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: And then there's the one I think Vampire Lestat is the one with like where he's like in a band.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: I think it's the one with Ariya, Queen of the Damned.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: Queen of the Damned.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: Cruz isn't in that, right?
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: No, but you know what's great about the books?
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: They kind of like they follow each other where it's like, well, this was actually how Lestat was made now.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: So you got the Louis story.
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so which is like really cool.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: And I love an orange in the story.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: We love an orange in the story.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: That analysis gives you an origin to every single one of them.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: It's great.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, love that.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: All right, so how about now we'll do a brief history of the vamps?
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: I just have very quick kind of going through so ancient Mesopotamia stories describe demons and spirits that preyed on humans, sometimes drinking blood or consuming life force around the 30th century BCE.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: Absolutely no idea what that is.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: Because that's not even BC, is it?
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, it is B.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: This was before common era.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: There's just a new way they're saying BC.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: So it's like sort of like more secular.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: How do you know this shit?
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: Ancient Greece, the Lamia, I'm not sure if that's how it's pronounced.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: Lamia was a famous female monster who preyed on children and sometimes seduced men before killing them.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: There was actually stories of Lilith, who I know you love, tying her to vampires, but it was very not like it didn't, it kind of seemed like a stretch, so I didn't really, I think, too.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: It feels like Lilith is just the scapegoat for all women being terrible, kind of.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: E2?
- 19:16unknown: Yeah.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: Ancient Rome stories of striges, stryges, I'm not sure.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: I didn't actually look up how to pronounce any of these things.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: Night flying creatures that attacked children and drank their blood were popular.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: Then the earliest specific mentions of undead threats were in the 10th to 11th century Bulgarian and Slavic folklore, where restless souls and corpses rose to terrorize villages and cause disease.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: And in the 1720s, the Austrian military investigated exhumed bodies showing signs of undead activity in places like Serbia.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: So this is where I want to talk about the ignorance of germs theory.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: It's not really a theory, it's pretty much like exactly what happened.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: People just like didn't understand decomposition, infectious disease, anemia, rabies, like any of these things.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: So all these supernatural things that were happening to the bodies, like the heart palpitations after they die, or whatever it is, where they would cough up blood after they were dead, people just really wanted to hang on to that as like it's gotta be something else.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: These people are still here.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: Or hair or fingernails, how they still grow even after you're dead.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: I think that this kind of shows and everything I kept reading about kept coming back to this idea that like vampire panics usually coincide with some kind of mysterious illness.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because you can't, there has to be some kind of explanation.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: We need explanations as humans.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: We need to be able to because if you create a monster like a vampire, yeah, then you can create ways to destroy it, and then you have sort of like agency, you feel like you're in control again.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: So it's instead of just being like this, there's this monster right out of control, it's like, oh, here's this thing that we can actually take action against if we have to.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: And then they create all these like sort of cooling garlic in the window.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: It's cool.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: It's like, all right, at least I got garlic in the window, so we should be good.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: And I can go to sleep at night, right?
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: We we good, we good.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: And this kind of was where we're gonna talk about the 19th century New England vampire panic.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: I know a favorite of yours.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: Favorite, yeah.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: I mean, it is fascinating.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: If there's one thing people from Rhode Island love, it's a story about Rhode Island or somebody from Rhode Island.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Like, if there's somebody on Survivor that's from Rhode Island, we are gonna know about it.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: You we will literally watch a movie just because films in Cranston.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: Like a hundred percent.
- 21:41SPEAKER_02: I watched the real housewives.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: I have no business.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: I have no interest in that.
- 21:44SPEAKER_02: I watched the entire season.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: It was fantastic.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: Because it was in Rhode Island.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: It was pretty good.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: It was good.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: That was my first Housewives, too, actually.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: I watch a lot of Bravo, but I don't watch the Housewives.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: I always say I watch the working class Bravo shows.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: So it's like the poor people, the restaurant workers, the people that have a share in house.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Like I did watch that a couple times.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: These are those are my people.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: Only because there's a girl from Rhode Island in it.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: Remember that?
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: She lived on the street for me.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: So the New England vampire panic, lots of ties to Rhode Island.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: So we are going to get into it because it's also, you know, it's very this isn't just Rhode Island tie.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: Like we would maybe even be talking about this no matter where we were.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: Good point.
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: I mean, I because it's how important it is to the vampire.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: Bram Stoker took newspaper clippings from this area, Exeter, Rhode Island, in the Providence Journal, which I which is crazy to me that Bram Stoker was reading the Providence Journal.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: That's kind of cool.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: Or do you think, or or more likely, he had some people around him that knew he was into the vampire stuff.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: I don't know that Bran Stoker was like had like a subscription to the Providence.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: Because it was like because this vampire craze is like late 1800s.
- 22:53SPEAKER_02: It's like people do know about like they shouldn't have been doing this.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: I would my guess, and this is completely made up, is that he had like a maybe a cousin that lived in the US that lived because this was on national, this was national news.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: So it wasn't just in New England, but but it was when it was national news, they were like, look at these fucking psychos in around.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: That's kind of national news it is.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: But I mean they're like, We just did Salem, like let's take it easy.
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, but Salem was at least 200 years before this.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: I know, I know, but still, it probably felt recent.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: And it went on for a while, right?
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: Didn't it?
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: This went on for a little bit.
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: This poor guy who's you know, the Brown family.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: You're gonna talk about that, right?
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: All right, let's just let's just let's talk about it.
- 23:45SPEAKER_02: Just hit it, yeah.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: All right, so in the 18th and 19th century, tuberculosis or consumption, as it was called, was sweeping through New England because it caused symptoms such as weight loss, coughing up blood, pale skin, which kind of resembled the life being drained out of you.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: And it was so easily transmissible between family members, people that lived together, obviously, people started to believe that the first person who contracted it was the vampire that would return to feed on their relatives.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: So, in an attempt to prevent this, the bodies of those who died were exhumed and examined.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: If the body seemed unusually fresh or had organs that contained liquid blood, they were determined to be a vampire, and the families would do anything from turning the body over in its grave, which that's your big move.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: You exhume the fucking body and you're gonna turn it over.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: Just flip everyone.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: Like, oh, he's gonna be confused.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: He's gonna dig down further into the earth.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: Or they would take it out, they would burn it, they would rip the organs out, they would actually decapitate some of them.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: And then the affected family members would inhale the smoke from the burned organs or consume the ashes in a further attempt to cure the consumption, which is crazy because I feel like that would be the last thing you'd want to do.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: Let me drink some old dead consumption, and maybe that's really if you had any idea about vampires, which I'm assuming that they didn't, but like you have to drink their blood, so like inhaling their organ smoke is probably not a great move if you're trying to get rid of them.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, that's not good.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: Not the move.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: So this brings us to Mercy Brown.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: This is near and dear to our hearts, no pun intended.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: In the late 1800s, George and Mary Brown's family suffered quite a loss when several of their family members died of tuberculosis.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: I actually was confused because I didn't realize that the Mary Eliza was the mom.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of Marys, you know.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: So Mary Eliza was the first one to get taken down by the TB.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: That was in 1883, followed by her eldest daughter, Mary Olive, in 1884, and then daughter Mercy in 1891.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Anytime there was multiple deaths in one family, they blamed it on undead activity.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: So George persuaded to give permission to exhibition several of their bodies on March 17th, 1892.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: Happy St.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: Patrick's Day.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's got a little green hat on.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: Their son Edwin, basically, Edwin had been sick and then he went out to like California.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: This was during the gold finish, right?
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: So he went out and he got better, and which is probably because he was in a better environment.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: He wasn't breathing in, you know, vampire smoke.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: And that's right.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: So then after all this happened, he came home as Mercy died.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: And like as soon as he came home, he got sick again and he was rail, and they were like, What the fuck is going on?
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: So they exhumed Mercy, Mary Eliza and Mary Olive, so they could get the stuff to save Edwin.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: As he was, I think it was five daughters and one son.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: So he was the only son.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: So you know they were like they were hanging their hat on that one.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: Mary Eliza and Mary Olive both showed signs of full decomposition, so they were cleared.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: Mercy, this was a little bit murky.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Like they said, she had a normal amount of decomposition, but Mercy had only been dead for like six months when this happened.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: And the other ones, Mary Eliza was 1883.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: This was nine years before.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it was like a really cold winter, so they think that there's could have been some preservation, obviously.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: So she had like a little bit of blood in her heart, and her yeah, her decomposition was there, but it just wasn't as much as they thought that it should have been.
- 27:17SPEAKER_01: So they burned her heart and her liver, and the ashes were mixed with water to create a tonic, which was given Edwin in an effort to resolve his illness, but he died two months later, so it didn't work.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: Shocker.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: And then they re-buried Mercy's body.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: In the end, George Brown was one of the very few to never contract tuberculosis, living until 1922, just long enough to see bacteriologists discover the BCG vaccine, which is used to reduce the risk of severe tuberculosis.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: He's like, He's like, how about that, huh?
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: He's like, Yeah, too little, too late.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: What's interesting about that story though is like then the ghost story sort of morphed into not so much a mercy scary story.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: It was like when I was young and in high school, well, the first time I went there, I was my sister had this boyfriend had like a snake, and we're sitting in this room, and he was like in Exeter, and he's like, I hold my snake, and I was like, I think I'm good, right?
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: And then he's like, Or we we can go look at the grave of Mercy, but and then like oh wait, you really have a snake.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: So he was near he lived in Exeter.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: A man with a snake that lives in Exeter.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: You didn't say, like, listen, this is not Vinny Matram.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: I won't I won't protect him.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: It was really weird, you know?
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: Like, this is not a safe space for you.
- 28:29SPEAKER_02: This is not.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: I was like, we gotta get out of here.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: Let's go see the ghost.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: He brought the snake, by the way, like on his arm.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: Oh, so is he one of those guys that like brings his snake everywhere and then is like, oh, why are you guys looking at me?
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was exactly and his name, this name of the snake was like Dan Marino or something like that.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: It was a weird quarterback.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: So we're we're walking out there.
- 28:47SPEAKER_02: But what's cool about this story is like now you can picture it and you can he's telling the story.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: He's like, he's like, you know, the real ghost story is that Edward walks around with a candlelight to make sure nobody else digs up any of his family members.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: And I was like, Oh, that's actually kind of cool.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: And then so we look for see the grave and everything like that.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: Awesome.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: Actually, at this time, for there was a little period of time where it was missing.
- 29:06SPEAKER_02: It was missing, and then it came back.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: That's true too.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: The grave, yes, stone, yes.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: Is this just in a regular graveyard?
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, yeah, it's like a it's like in a yeah, it's like a small graveyard.
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: It's like at a church, it's really cool.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: You can still go see it.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: I'd rather not.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: But then later on in life, there's a the real crazy story is that I was there and then there's like these kids.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: I'm not even giving any names because like this is like a real crazy, crazy story.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: They're doing the thing where they're like peeing and they're like not being respectful to the area, right?
- 29:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and saying all these things.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: Was it John Eric?
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: Not a guy.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: Me and John would have been very respectful.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: But it was this was like just straight up high school friends.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: Okay, right?
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: So they were doing their own thing.
- 29:41SPEAKER_02: Well, what happened was as I know the story, they were doing all this stuff, and then the next day, one of the kids that was doing all this stuff got in a car accident in his ice cream truck and died.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: In his ice cream truck?
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 29:54SPEAKER_02: So, yes, this is true story.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: He was driving an ice cream truck and somebody hit him.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, because you probably don't buckle in.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, exactly.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: It's a very dangerous vehicle.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: So we're so we're going and like rest in peace.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: Sorry for the disrespect.
- 30:07SPEAKER_02: We have this like, so I'm telling the story in my car, and I'm I'm telling the story to like Mike Burke and Liz.
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: And as soon as I say the name, Mercy Brown, the doors in the if the in the car open up and the light turns on.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: Yes, it's a true story.
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 30:23SPEAKER_02: No, I don't know.
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: Obviously, now I look back as an adult, I'm like, was maybe did maybe Mike Burke like freak out from the story and like try to open the door, and then we we s we subconsciously.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: That's exactly what happened.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: Ours and the lights came on.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: But but it was so it felt so real, or maybe it was so real, that like none of us get in the car for a while.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: In fact, we eventually get back in the car, but like you know, Liz, she was like, she was like refusing to get in the car.
- 30:44SPEAKER_02: I was like, oh my god, like at this point, you know.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: It feels like you've had a lot of supernatural things happen to you.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: I'm thinking of the ship that we talked about in the Topkin episode.
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: Okay, there's two options here.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: Maybe you're a little sensitive to I hope not winds of change or something.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: Or do you think that maybe you're like targeted?
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: Do you think you have a spirit around you that just likes to fuck with you, maybe?
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: No.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: You said that you used to do all the like bloody Mary shit.
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but here's the thing it's always been good stuff for me.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I guess like the doors unlocking or whatever isn't like traumatizing, you know?
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: I took that as like, hey, that's enough of that story.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: No, thank you.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: We're not doing that.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't I would never go to Mercy Bron's grave, especially at night.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: Especially with a man with a snake.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: That's a good point.
- 31:36unknown: That's a good point.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: You're you're like playing with fire over there.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: Well, not anymore.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: No, no, you just said you couldn't even like find the time to go out and have a beer with one of your friends.
- 31:45SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: Although I can see you taking your crew.
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: I mean, we would we would go do something like we've been to like cemeteries.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: My kids would never, oh my god.
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: Well, actually, when we lived in situ, we rented a house for a couple months before we moved into the house we're in now, and it was right in downtown Situate, and they have a graveyard there, and we would walk back and forth constantly, checking out the names.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's fun.
- 32:08SPEAKER_02: You'd be respectful about it, and you're all we have a historic cemetery in our backyard.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: Well, that's dangerous.
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: Guess what number it is?
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: What?
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: 69.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: I was gonna say that, but I was like, oh yeah.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: All right, so let's talk about how we get to the modern vampire.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: So in 1819, John Polidori wrote The Vampire with a Y featuring Lord Ruthvin, who was an aristocratic vampire.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: This was big because this was the first time the vampire wasn't like a disgusting corpse, but a handsome, wealthy, sophisticated aristocrat.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: It was kind of the blueprint for Dracula, which was a novel written by Bram Stoker in 1897, and that really like moved him into the pop culture vampire as we kind of know it today.
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: It does change a little bit more.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: Characteristics of Dracula, mysterious, seductive, immortal, able to transform into animals, associated blood with sexuality, and vulnerable to specific rules.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: So a lot of the stuff, the garlic, the notion.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, those weren't like folklore.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: That was made up.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, they must have come from something though.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: What's interesting is like as we're talking about Dracula, who's also like Vlad the Impaler and Countess Bathory and Hungry, who used to bathe in the blood of virgins, there's like a compilation of all these like freaky stories from history all put into one.
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: And I and I love the concept of like if something is going to be really bad and scary and like destroy your life, it's probably not going to look like a monster.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: Do you know what I mean?
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: I think that's what happens.
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: Like, if someone's gonna destroy your family, it's gonna be like a Brad Pitt type.
- 33:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, hopefully, yeah, yeah.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: It's gotta be worth it.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like a lot of the stuff, like the garlic, it was something that people had done in other what's the word I'm looking for?
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: Like cultures, civilizations, yeah, cultures.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: But this was the first time that they were attributed to Dracula or a vampire.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: Kind of.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, I don't think all of them, but I think that they made up a lot of stuff, especially over the course of the 1900s.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, think about even in some of the movies that we watch, shit was just made up.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: Like in Lost Boys, how if you kill the head vampire, the rest of them die.
- 34:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's in something else too, though.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: It's in Game of Thrones with the White Walkers.
- 34:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: That's what I kept thinking about.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: I was like, oh, and it's convenient, you know.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: It's very convenient.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: Like you just gotta get to the head, who happened to be Richard Gilmore.
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: The nerdiest dude ever.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: Anyways, moving on.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: So then in 1922, we have the silent film Nosferatu.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: It was an unauthorized adaptation of Dracula, which featured Count Orlock as a decidedly not sexy, but a rat-like and bald figure.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: Would Count Orlock be in the Bald Brotherhood?
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: Would you accept that?
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: I don't think so.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: You wouldn't accept rat-like?
- 34:53SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, you're gonna deny him.
- 34:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I guess you have to, right?
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: Like imagine like Count Orlock and Charlie Brown just hanging out.
- 35:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Charlie Brown doesn't need to shave it.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: He's got like four hairs.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's hanging on.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: So do you not let people in if they're hanging on?
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: No, here's the thing.
- 35:11SPEAKER_02: I'm glad you asked.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: That's an interesting question.
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: If someone Charlie Brown is bald, but uh not by choice, what we don't let in is the people who could grow full heads of hair and shave.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: But I don't feel like do many men do that.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: You know what it is?
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: I feel like a lot of black men do it because their hair look real good.
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: Well, they they sure do, but their hair is also a little bit harder to maintain.
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: But like white men who just have like a regular head of hair, you don't see a lot of like usually when you see a bald white man, he's got a horseshoe, you know, or he's got you can tell like he's he's missing a lot.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: Some people don't look bad with the like the horseshoe.
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: Plus they're hanging so many of them are just hanging on by a thread to begin with.
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 35:55SPEAKER_02: Do you think people are still doing that?
- 35:56SPEAKER_02: It's like so it's so accepted now more than ever before that that you could just lop it off.
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, I think that's what most people do.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: I don't think that a lot of guys are out here hanging on at the George Stanley at the age of 30.
- 36:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: You know, when you get older, like it doesn't really matter.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: But when you're young, you know, it it's a shame too, because it's like gray hair, you can go down to like a 22-year-old with gray hair is still, you know, it doesn't really mean anything.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: But anyways, so we return to a sexy Dracula with Bella Legosi's suave tuxedo wearing vamp in 1931.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: I don't remember that one.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: What was it?
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: Well, he like, you know, that's not you're not gonna remember that one.
- 36:37SPEAKER_02: That's an old one.
- 36:39SPEAKER_01: Bella Lugosi sounds familiar though.
- 36:41SPEAKER_02: He's very he I think he did a lot of the monster movies.
- 36:44SPEAKER_02: Is he a director?
- 36:45SPEAKER_02: He's no, he's uh he's an actor, but he's Hungarian.
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: Uh that's all I know.
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: So he was Dracula.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 36:51SPEAKER_01: 1950s to 70s, vampires are both monstrous but sexual.
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: I'm not even meaning to like keep referring to them as sexy, but like this is what my research was.
- 37:01SPEAKER_01: They kept coming back to this.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: And like I said, it felt like I was watching porn.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: 1970s to 90s, things take a turn.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: They stop being a straight-up bad guy and become more complicated, sometimes sympathetic creatures.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: They fall in love, they have emotions, they struggle with their immortality.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: You know, this is Interview with a Vampire, Lost Boys, 1992 Dracula.
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: And I think the big factor in making them a little more complicated and a little bit harder to put into the bad guy category is they're all played by the hottest actors in Hollywood.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you know, the 1992 one, I think that's the pivotal one.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: I really know, and we wanted to watch it, but it wasn't free, and I don't do that anymore.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: So just so good though.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: I wanted to watch it.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: I almost actually last night I got like close, and then I was like, no, I'm tired.
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna finish this, and there's just no point.
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: But I thought about it.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: Because it has Van Helsing and everything, it's like really cool.
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: Is Keanu Reeves in it?
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: Keanu Reeves is in it.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: He's not vampire though, right?
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: No, Gary Oldman is dragon interesting, and he's incredible.
- 38:03SPEAKER_01: Gary Oldman.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: No, I was thinking of Gary Sinise.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: I was like Lieutenant Dan.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: Oh, God.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: And then we hit on the pop culture of vampires.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: We start with Buffy, which made them funny in the movie.
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: Christy Swanson.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: Christy Swanson, Luke Perry was there.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: That scene at the end when he's got the he's like, ooh, ooh, you know, it goes on for like 10 minutes.
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, that's right.
- 38:33SPEAKER_01: It was feeling that was like peak humor.
- 38:35SPEAKER_01: Like I remember laughing at that for days afterwards.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: And then Buffy the TV show is funny too.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: And then you have Twilight, which makes them borderline delicate, some might say.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: And then True Blood, where they're integrated into society, and finally the vampire diaries, where they get the full WB treatment, even though it was like long past the WB time.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: But they're everything.
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: They're sexy, they're funny, they're romantic, they're evil, they're sympathetic, they're terrifying.
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: Like there's no one way to classify them.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: And I think they kind of evolve with what we want to see, which is why more so than almost any other villain or monster or anything.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: Like, there's no Frankenstein, like zombies had a moment, they're not really around.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: Vampires can be so many different things that they were able to stand the test of time.
- 39:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, remember Angel?
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: And that was all like the 2000s into the 2010s were huge for vampires.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 39:34SPEAKER_02: And they'll be back.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, they just keep coming back.
- 39:36SPEAKER_02: Are you kidding me?
- 39:37SPEAKER_02: Like Twilight, how big was Twilight?
- 39:39SPEAKER_02: How big was True Blood?
- 39:40SPEAKER_02: I mean, it was just huge.
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: I actually just because I was watching a bunch of vampire stuff too, and and in the mix of it, because I was just like searching vampires, and I watched a movie called Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter.
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: I saw that.
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: I didn't watch it, but I I saw that.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: I watched that.
- 39:54SPEAKER_02: That was pretty good.
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, there were so many choices, and that was the thing.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: Like, I had to be like, Greg, I can watch three.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: I can.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: I had to like make you like tone it down a little bit because you were talking, you were talking about a bunch of them, and I was like, no.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I also think that zombies are kind of a sign of like the end of times.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: When you see zombies, like shit is it's gonna end, like you're not coexisting with zombies, whereas vampires, they're always kind of around.
- 40:20SPEAKER_02: And there's like zombies are just like significantly less like complicated.
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: I think that's to your point earlier.
- 40:24SPEAKER_02: Like, that's just they're just kind of mindless consumption.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: It's like whatever.
- 40:28SPEAKER_01: And they're always so slow.
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: They're one track mind, one track pony, and they're gross.
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: All that's full on them.
- 40:33SPEAKER_01: I do love Milo Mannheim from the zombies movie on Disney.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: But all they did was like tint their skin green a little bit, so like they're not like gross.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: Even that went off the rails.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: The first two were real good.
- 40:45SPEAKER_01: I then No, I love I love him.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: He's gonna be the new Flynn Ryder in the new Rapunzel.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: Tangled, yeah.
- 40:53SPEAKER_01: All right, so let's talk about the movies.
- 40:55SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 40:56SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah.
- 40:56SPEAKER_01: Interview with a vampire.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: We open up on Slater and Pitt, Christian Slater.
- 41:01SPEAKER_01: We've talked about how he's he's my arch nemesis, right?
- 41:03SPEAKER_01: You know, I can't stand that man.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: We were at a bar at the same time once, and I got up to go to the bathroom and he took my place in line for karaoke, and I'll never forgive him.
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: It's a one-sided feud, but yeah, it's alive.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: Every time I see him come on something, I'm like, Slater! Slater.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: Fucking God.
- 41:19SPEAKER_01: His role was actually supposed to go to River Phoenix.
- 41:21SPEAKER_02: Oh, but River Phoenix had died?
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he died.
- 41:24SPEAKER_01: That would have been interesting.
- 41:24SPEAKER_01: I liked River Phoenix.
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: I thought he was Phoenix was another stud.
- 41:27SPEAKER_01: He was he was a great I'd be interested to see what kind of roles he could have taken on.
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: It was at this point that I was watching it that I was like, oh, it's an interview with a vampire.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: Like I never like put that together.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: I don't think.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, maybe I did at the time, but this time I was like, oh, okay, okay.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: Can you imagine what the Pitt Cruise combo when people found out about this?
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: Antonio Banderas.
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: Antonio Banderas.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: And he's young too.
- 41:54SPEAKER_01: He looked good.
- 41:55SPEAKER_01: They all look good.
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, Cruz looked real good.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: They pit looked incredible.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: I could have done with without Cruz as a blonde.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: Didn't do it for me.
- 42:04SPEAKER_02: No, but like, boy, he was good though.
- 42:06SPEAKER_02: You have to admit.
- 42:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he was good.
- 42:07SPEAKER_02: When Cruz is on, he's on.
- 42:09SPEAKER_02: And when he's on, he's on.
- 42:10SPEAKER_02: Like, even that moment where like Louis's so mad at him and he's kind of like laughing at him as he's trying to kill him.
- 42:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I just like he's just really he's just really good.
- 42:17SPEAKER_02: That's a that is that a sleeper movie that is that underrated?
- 42:20SPEAKER_02: Do it not a lot of people.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: I feel like you weren't super gung-ung ho about interview with the vampire.
- 42:25SPEAKER_02: Because I've seen it so many times.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 42:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:27SPEAKER_02: I like it.
- 42:28SPEAKER_01: I've only seen it like once or twice.
- 42:30SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's good.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: So Pitt loses his wife and his daughter, probably to consumption, I'm gonna guess, or something of the sort.
- 42:37SPEAKER_01: And Cruz targets him.
- 42:38SPEAKER_01: I wonder if it's because he hears that he has the death wish or because he just thinks he's hot, because it's very homoerotic.
- 42:44SPEAKER_02: It's like both, I think.
- 42:45SPEAKER_02: Because there's that scene he where he's watching him and like Pitt loses in cards and then he like opens his shirt just like to kill him and he's just kind of sitting there.
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:53SPEAKER_02: And he's like, oh god.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: But also, I'm imagining if you're looking for a wingman to lure the ladies in.
- 42:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, you you don't want a two.
- 43:02SPEAKER_01: You need you need a ten.
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:04SPEAKER_02: That's the guy.
- 43:05SPEAKER_01: So Cruz turns Pitt.
- 43:07SPEAKER_01: I'm just I'm referring to them as Cruz and Pitt.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: That's how it's gonna be.
- 43:10SPEAKER_01: He's like, You should be a vampire, you're never gonna have to feel pain.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: But then, like, very obviously is in a lot of pain when he turns him.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: They do make it seem like it is painful for the vampire, which was one of the only times that really did seem like it hurt too much.
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: They sleep in coffins in this one, which wasn't all of them, but I was thinking, like, I'm very claustrophobic, so like I could never, but like, I bet that's a great sleep.
- 43:31SPEAKER_01: Oh, dude, lights out a nice stone coffin with some velvet lining.
- 43:36SPEAKER_02: But the only thing is, like, I'd always be like, Can I lift the lid?
- 43:39SPEAKER_02: Did someone put some on us?
- 43:41SPEAKER_01: You know you'd need the the bell.
- 43:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: I know because it's like, I bet it's nice and cool in there, probably no sound.
- 43:49SPEAKER_02: Zero sound.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: I wonder if you can sleep on your stomach, you know.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: The women are so turned on by every time they like kill them, basically.
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: And it's like not to victim blame, but it really does seem like you're kind of.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: Into this.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: Even do even the old lady, it's like in two seconds, they're like moaning all over the place.
- 44:06SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, that is that what's going on here?
- 44:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:09SPEAKER_02: That's some good that's some good necking.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:12SPEAKER_01: Well, the old lady, it's kind of like, you know, I mean, she's probably been a minute.
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: I'd imagine.
- 44:16SPEAKER_02: Oh, she's like, oh, I remember this melody.
- 44:19SPEAKER_01: Brad Pitt shows up.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: It's like, you're 80 something years old.
- 44:22SPEAKER_01: You're you're gonna make it happen.
- 44:23SPEAKER_01: Kirsten Dunce shows up.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: She is acting circles around these men, though.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: Like she is an incre didn't she was she nominated for an Oscar for that?
- 44:32SPEAKER_02: She I she may have that.
- 44:33SPEAKER_01: I think she may have been.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: This is her big break.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: I think she she was so good.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: Like she's this little sweetie pie that's like snuggling up to him, and like you feel bad for her because she's a little girl, and then she's just a little psychopath, too.
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: I saw an article about it, and when uh Cruz bring Cruz essentially gets her to like make Brad Pitt stay and like be happy, and it was like just one vampire platonically baby trapping another vampire, and I was like, it's so true, it's true.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: It was sad though when she realized like she was never gonna grow up.
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: I think I missed when they kissed.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: I don't think I was paying attention.
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: They did kiss that, like she always says that that was her first kiss.
- 45:12SPEAKER_02: I think I missed that too.
- 45:13SPEAKER_02: Maybe I blocked that up.
- 45:14SPEAKER_01: They did though, because she's talked about it.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: I love when they play sympathy for the devil at the end.
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: I thought that was such a good choice.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: Now, Lestat Cruz was very hard partying.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: He really went hard and was like taking it down anyone who would he could find pretty much.
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: He said he did like three, four women a night.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: Like, take it easy.
- 45:33SPEAKER_01: And then he's wasting away, kind of like getting really pale and sick and whatever.
- 45:38SPEAKER_01: And like, do you think that it was kind of a little bit of a commentary on like the AIDS crisis that was happening at that time?
- 45:44SPEAKER_02: Oh wow.
- 45:45SPEAKER_01: Because if you think about it, you know, like we said, like it's always with like a mysterious illness, and we kind of knew at that point it would have been like 90 probably when they were filming this, because I think it was what 91, 92, but it was probably still such a taboo, and then with like the homo eroticism, I was like, I wonder if maybe them trying to show in a very subtle way you go hard and then you know you end up that's what happens, yeah.
- 46:14SPEAKER_02: Even with the women, right?
- 46:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you go a little too too much neck, and then guess what?
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: You're gonna pick the wrong one at some point, and also the plan was to recreate the character as a woman so Cher could play Lestat's lover, making it more palatable to straight audiences at one point.
- 46:29SPEAKER_01: So Cher was gonna be the I think the Brad Pitt role.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: What?
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, and Cher and Tom Cruise dated.
- 46:36SPEAKER_01: We talked about this in our random episodes.
- 46:38SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 46:39SPEAKER_01: But I don't know, yeah.
- 46:40SPEAKER_01: It was a great movie.
- 46:41SPEAKER_01: Definitely.
- 46:41SPEAKER_01: I haven't I I hadn't seen it since the early 90s, so it was good.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: Lost Boys.
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: Great movie.
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: What?
- 46:47SPEAKER_02: I said it was a great movie.
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it is a great movie.
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: Lost Boys.
- 46:50SPEAKER_02: So Lost Boys, incredible.
- 46:52SPEAKER_01: Incredible.
- 46:52SPEAKER_01: Jason Patrick looks so much like Will from Will and Grace, I couldn't stop thinking about it.
- 46:56SPEAKER_01: To the point where I kind of thought it was him.
- 46:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 47:00SPEAKER_02: I could see that.
- 47:01SPEAKER_02: And then Ted, I can like Ted from Bill and Ted.
- 47:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Bill and Ted with that.
- 47:05SPEAKER_02: No, is it Bill?
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: No, Bill and Ted's excellent adventure.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 47:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but like was that was he Bill or was he?
- 47:11SPEAKER_01: I think he was Ted.
- 47:12SPEAKER_01: I'm pretty sure he's Ted.
- 47:13SPEAKER_01: I think Bill was Keanu.
- 47:14SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 47:15SPEAKER_01: I want to say.
- 47:15SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 47:16SPEAKER_01: I'm not that familiar with it.
- 47:17SPEAKER_01: That would be a good episode, though.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: A Haym Feldman duo.
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: I always wonder about like what would happen if Haym lived and Feldman died.
- 47:26SPEAKER_02: Because Hayme Well, it's not like Haym was doing a ton of Yeah, I know.
- 47:31SPEAKER_01: Because I always think that he was like a child.
- 47:33SPEAKER_02: I always think he was like Jonathan Brandis that was taken before his no, like he was like, I think he would it obviously there was some like mistreatment of those guys.
- 47:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah Charlie Sheen.
- 47:42SPEAKER_02: Charlie Sheen did some shit.
- 47:44SPEAKER_01: Allegedly, he like molested Haym, according according to Feldman.
- 47:48SPEAKER_01: Allegedly.
- 47:49SPEAKER_02: Why the fuck do these rich people do this shit?
- 47:51SPEAKER_02: I don't understand it.
- 47:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, speak speaking of, he was looking a little pale there for a while too, wasn't he?
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: Didn't he have some kind of like AIDS scare?
- 47:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, he he has HIV.
- 48:00SPEAKER_02: Oh, all right.
- 48:01SPEAKER_01: It's not a big deal anymore, though.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: You take like prep or whatever, and you look not that it's not a big deal, but you can like live and like everybody's Magic Johnson, basically.
- 48:11SPEAKER_01: Like you can live with it, not spread it, you know.
- 48:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because you can you imagine like sleeping with someone and then your HIV and then like you tell them after, and they're you're like, it's not a big deal anymore.
- 48:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a big deal.
- 48:21SPEAKER_01: It is a big deal, it is a big deal.
- 48:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it'll be a big deal then.
- 48:24SPEAKER_01: I love when they made him a vampire and the only difference is he got an earring.
- 48:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know.
- 48:32SPEAKER_01: It was a little anticlimactic for me.
- 48:34SPEAKER_01: It didn't really feel like that much happened in it.
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: I know, but it's just like young keeper.
- 48:40SPEAKER_01: There's just like that blonde hair, it was toned very nicely.
- 48:44SPEAKER_01: I will say that.
- 48:45SPEAKER_02: I just think that like for whatever reason, I really like that movie.
- 48:48SPEAKER_02: I don't know why.
- 48:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, it was good.
- 48:50SPEAKER_01: And then no Sferatu.
- 48:55SPEAKER_01: I hated this movie.
- 48:56SPEAKER_02: I feel like they're trying to do too much with like the visuals.
- 48:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like it was too whatever.
- 49:02SPEAKER_01: I just I hated it.
- 49:03SPEAKER_01: I hated Orlock, I hated his voice.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: No offense to Skarsgard.
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: I was so bored, and then I was disgusted.
- 49:10SPEAKER_01: When he was like humping him on top of him on the floor, I was like, all right, I gotta get out of here.
- 49:15SPEAKER_01: Like, I can't do this.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: And then I went back, I listened to a podcast about it.
- 49:17SPEAKER_01: I went back and went.
- 49:19SPEAKER_01: I watched the end when the rats came, and then when she like trapped him at the end, which I like that.
- 49:25SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 49:26SPEAKER_01: So vampires, right?
- 49:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like it just it I don't know.
- 49:30SPEAKER_01: It was fine, it was whatever.
- 49:31SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't wouldn't recommend it, but it was you know, they did a good job.
- 49:35SPEAKER_01: It was a well done movie, but I don't know.
- 49:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like visually, as they say, it's pretty good.
- 49:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, and how about how when he was talking, he I think that's it too.
- 49:42SPEAKER_01: It sounds like he needs a CPAP machine.
- 49:44SPEAKER_01: He's like Yeah.
- 49:49SPEAKER_01: It was like this is terrible.
- 49:51SPEAKER_02: I and like they're trying, that's a choice, you know what I mean?
- 49:53SPEAKER_02: I guess, but like whatever.
- 49:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think the 1992 Dracula.
- 49:56SPEAKER_01: I would like I'm gonna watch it one day when it comes on streaming, probably in like a week.
- 50:01SPEAKER_01: Watch it.
- 50:01SPEAKER_02: I'm surprised it's not right now.
- 50:02SPEAKER_01: I know what is up with this, as I said to you, like it's supposed to be Huluween.
- 50:07SPEAKER_01: What's going on there?
- 50:08SPEAKER_02: Like Peacock doing it, really doing it for the Halloween season.
- 50:11SPEAKER_02: They're doing they got a lot.
- 50:12SPEAKER_02: Netflix has got some HBO Max.
- 50:15SPEAKER_01: They crush it.
- 50:16SPEAKER_01: All right, and on that note, we will see you next week.
