- 0:11SPEAKER_02: Hello, hello, and welcome to another episode of a really good podcast with Greg and Liz.
- 0:15SPEAKER_02: And on today's episode, I was gonna make a need for speed joke, but I don't know.
- 0:20SPEAKER_02: I didn't come up with it in time.
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: So we're talking about Top Gun.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Sounds like there's a need for a joke, right?
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: Sure, sure is.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: Sure is.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: No, no, it's I get it.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Sometimes you have to do that thing where you're like, there's something there, but I d I I just can't get my head around it, or it's too obvious.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: But like so, sometimes it's better to just be like, there's a joke there, and just you know, everyone can make their own.
- 0:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: So we are talking about something that is near and dear to my heart.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: I knew you were gonna say that.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: I knew I as you started talking, I said, I bet he's gonna say it's near and dear to his heart.
- 0:52SPEAKER_02: It's not near and dear to my heart.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: And you know what the funny part is, I picked this episode.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: I know it's a great pick.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: And and look, I know that you said that.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: So we're talking about Top Gun.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: I know that you said Top Gun was kind of a slog.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: And look, if you didn't step across the flight deck and walk through that mist, do you know what I mean?
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Like that's coming up from the catapults and the smell and like the shit's about to go down on this thing.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And you know, it just that beginning of Top Gun, the original, gives me goosebumps.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: See, to me, I was like, this is the type of shit people don't have patience for anymore.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, it was so long, it was so long.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: So I would like to say this.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna just put this right out there that I actually really enjoyed the second one.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: It's great.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: I thought the second one was great, and I was trying to think about why that was.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: And I think what I figured out is I think the first top gun, I don't know that they thought it was gonna be what it was.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: I think they thought the first top gun was gonna be, you know, this is for an action movie for people who like jets and the military and whatever, and they didn't describe anything.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: So I'm watching it like six hours into this top gun experience.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: I still don't know what a MiG is, you know, I don't know anything.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: Like they're they're just talking in this language that I don't even understand.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: And in the second one, I think they knew that so many people would watch it that didn't understand this stuff that they really like dumbed it down, which I needed.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you know what's funny is as difficult as the first one can be for people, you do need it to fully enjoy the second one.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Because there was a lot of callbacks and everything, a ton of callbacks and a ton of like, you know, like this generational stuff there.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Like you you've got the sun and also the jet when they find the old F-14.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like what was that?
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: It was just like hanging around.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Well, I mean, they had a s they had a shoehorn that in somehow.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: Is that the jet that they had in the first movie?
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: Okay, see.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: I didn't that they didn't really like make that clear.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: I well, look, it's very distinctly.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: You know, I actually did the last cruise that those planes were in a war zone.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: They act the last time that those planes flew in any type of battle, I was on that last cruise.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: Look at you.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: Wait, so you like interacted with the navy?
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: Like, what's the relationship between the coast guard?
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: You were in the coast guard, right?
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: Or no, no, I was in the navy.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: Oh, sorry.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: Sorry, Greg.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, two very different things.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: I thought you were in the Coast Guard.
- 3:09SPEAKER_02: Why did I think no?
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: I knew you were in the Navy.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: Why did I think that?
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: I think because you were on a boat.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: Weren't you on a boat?
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the Navy uh does a lot of boats, it's like their whole thing.
- 3:17SPEAKER_02: Oh see, what do I know?
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: What do I know?
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: The Navy that you're that's not to you, that's not synonymous with boats.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: No, yeah, I guess I don't really think about it, if we're gonna be honest.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: I think the Coast Guard to me is more synonymous with boats.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: So the Navy, I think, yeah, it's boats, but I think jets too, because of Top Gun, probably.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, totally.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: But jets on boats, jets on boats, yeah.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: And that was one thing I was like, how do they land these on these boats, man?
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: It's not easy.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Do you incredible?
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: Did you fly?
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: Were you a pilot?
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: See, like, are you it's like you're you're like leading me into all these things for me to be like, no, not that great.
- 3:52unknown: Yeah.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: So no.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: So you were on a boat, so I wasn't that far off.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was on a boat, I did not fly, and I did work on the flight deck.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: Frankly, Greg, you couldn't pay me all the money in the world to get in one of those fucking jets.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: I was watching it in the second movie, in the beginning of the second movie, when he does that whole thing where they're like speeding up, whatever.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: I was like, I'm going 75 and I'm like feeling out of control on the highway.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, I can't even wrap my head around these people and the choices that they make to end up there.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: They have a need for speed.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they sure do.
- 4:25unknown: That's the whole thing.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: So I did this a little bit differently.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: I didn't do the normal amount of research, which is fine.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: Because there were two movies that we had to talk about.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: I figure we talk a little bit about the like I wanted to talk about the Navy recruitment aspect of it, and then a few other things.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: And then I thought we'd just talk about the movie because there's so much to talk about with like the people and the homo eroticism.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: I knew that was coming up.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Sure is and I I don't hate it.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: Lot of you know, lot of man on man snuggling.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: But did that make you see now that we live in a sort of a different sort of culture?
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Was it still sort of like uncomfortable?
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Because in the 80s it was like, what's going on here?
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of it was more like I don't think that when men, and you can correct me if I'm wrong.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: I don't think that men, when they're sitting in class in the Navy, they're like have their arms around each other and are like leaning in.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Probably not a ton of that.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Well, you would know, but there's more butt smacking than you would.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, butt smacking, sure.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: At one point, Goose is sitting in the locker room and Tom Cruise goes to talk, Maverick goes to talk to him, and he stands next to him in a towel and like lifts his leg up on the bench, yeah, and is just standing next to him with a towel on with his leg that's a power move.
- 5:39SPEAKER_02: It's a power move, but it's like your penis is right in his face.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: And he wants you to know it.
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: Why why is this happening?
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Because that's that's like a very animalistic display of strength, I think.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: I guess so.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was like here's my penis.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: I feel that it's but it's goose, it's his wingman.
- 5:58SPEAKER_02: This isn't like Iceman that he's trying to, you know, one up or anything.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, but it's all subtle.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: He's gotta let him see, see, like goo goose.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: See, he's gonna let his wingman know, like, look, I'm piloting this plane.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: You guys gotta follow my lead.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: And that's in every aspect of our life.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: That's a tragedy.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: He led that he led him down the wrong path.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: He he fucked him, he killed him.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't really I don't think I understood what happened.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: Did he kill him?
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: See, I didn't understand.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: I didn't know every time they were flying, I'm like, I don't even know what's happening right now.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: You know, it was he took too many risks.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: That's essentially it.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: That's that's one thing.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: And I do want to talk about let's talk about it right now.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: Maverick, is he a hero or is he just an adrenaline junkie?
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: He has an arc, so he's a hero come the end of the second movie.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, when he finally steps back a little bit, maybe?
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Yes, because it's like this thing about him is wildly useful in a way if he can just get it under control.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Because too much of anything's no good, right?
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: I mean Yeah.
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: I also wonder if Rooster doing something as stupid as Maverick would have done, he was like, Okay, this is a lot.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: Like, how dumb are you?
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: You know?
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: Because what Rooster did was really stupid.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Rooster's stupid.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: But Rooster's also great.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: He's charming, though.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Oh my look, I mean, this guy's a good looking guy.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, is it I think I think he's you know, this is like anything talking about homo erata.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: I I uh I think that Miles Teller is a better looking guy than that Glennell.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't think so.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: I'm very attracted to Glenn Powell.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: Let me say this, okay.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: I struggled with Top Gun, the first one.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: It took me a few tries to get all the way through, just because I just kept watching it and I was like, I don't know what's happening.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: I was trying to compare it to like imagine you watching a movie that I picked out about working in a salon, okay?
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: And like there's a fair amount of drama, there's a good, you know, storyline, whatever.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: But the whole time they're talking about like the occipital range and whether a 6V would work or an 8N or you know, and like all the shit they like, and they never explain anything.
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: You'd be like, what the fuck is this?
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Even if it's interesting, it's like they didn't break down anything.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: So the whole time I'm like, I don't understand what you're talking about, you know?
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're right.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: So it was a little bit of a slog to get through.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: I will say that.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: I also like didn't find anyone attractive enough to make it worthwhile.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Whereas Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise, icons.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: Val Kilmer is very like a lot of teeth, a lot of highlights, a lot of I the clean cut thing is not really, not really my jam, you know?
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: That super tight fade, and I don't know.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: And Tom Cruise just is not right.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: If Tom Cruise is a robot, I would not be surprised one bit.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, all right.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: Well, nothing about that man is sexual to me.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Now even I think you may be on an island with like with that.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: I don't I think I might have been on an island 30 years ago.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: I don't think I'm on an island now.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, maybe not anymore.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: He's very robotic, he's very like uh when he's with these women.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: I I I can't I can't wait to I'm not gonna get into it right now, but the whole love arc in the second movie was I don't even know where to begin on that.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: It was so weird.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Like, why why is this even happen?
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: But I think that so with the second movie, so it was like I it was last Tuesday.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: I knew we were recording it this weekend, I knew I had to get through it.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: I was like, I'm gonna watch the second movie.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: I had a feeling I was gonna like the second movie better, but I was really turned off by the first movie.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: So I was in my kitchen, it was like 10 o'clock, and I went to go put something in the freezer before I went to go watch the movie.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: I just put the kids to bed and I I had a party last weekend and there was a thing, the little mini fireball things in there.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: I was like, I'm gonna take a shot.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: And I took a shot of fireball and I went and watched it, and it helped.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: But no, the second one's incredible.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: So the second one starts, and it's like I didn't really remember.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: I knew Miles Teller was in it, and that was really all I could remember.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: And then I was like, Glenn Powell, and then I was like, Ed Harris.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: And then I was like, Jay Ellis.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: I I love Jay Ellis though.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: He was on Insecure on HBO, and I loved him on that.
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: So I was really excited to see him.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: Both movies, though, it got to a point where something happened, and I was like, okay, that's it.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: Like in the first one, it was the graduation.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: I was like, all right, we're done here.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: And then I was like, Oh, there's 20 minutes left.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: You know they're getting in the plane again.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, though, because they gotta put it into practice.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that's the so both movies have the same sort of like, all right, we're pra Top Gun.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: It's just it's like Top Gun's the drama, but really it's just practice.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: And I think there's something kind of cool about that.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: You gotta get out there.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: All right, let's talk about the Navy recruitment aspect of it first, and then we'll go through both of the movies.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: So this movie was basically like funded by the Department of Defense.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: They gave millions of dollars in like planes, jets, military equipment, and everything to do it.
- 10:49SPEAKER_02: And they said that after the first film, the Navy recruiting offices reported surges in applications of up to 500%.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: In reality, it was actually closer to 8%.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: And I think that's so funny because that's such a product of its time where they would just say something and you'd be like, sure.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like when Reagan said like 25,000 kids are getting kidnapped like every fucking minute.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: And it's like But there was absolutely no way to check that.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like this comedian has this bit where it was like, it was literally like he was saying like 50,000 kids are are abducted a year, and then this comedian has this bit, I can't remember his name, where he says the actual number was closer to 50.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: And then he says he was off by 50,000.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Which like it's it's like you know, it's just it's that is a very 80s thing where it's just numbers.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sure.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: 590.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: There is a whole thing of maybe there was a huge surge in applications, just from people that were like, Oh, yeah, let's apply.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: But the amount of people that actually went through with anything going forward was probably very, very minimal.
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: Recruiters even set up booths directly outside the cinema lobbies to capitalize on the adrenaline rush.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: So, like, maybe that 500% was the people that like gave their name.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like they're in front of their date.
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: What do you think about that though?
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: Is that a little bit of like propaganda?
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't know.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: I I'm kind of behind it.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: I think that that's kind of uh an interesting, cool way to drive up because it's not like they told any lies.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: Well, the they glamorized it, they they glamorized it for sure because like the people who are gonna be enlisting aren't going to do flying jets, they're not gonna get cool leather jackets, there's no sunglasses.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: Never once have I been able to ride a motorcycle onto base with like a t-shirt and sunglasses.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: I I don't think that that's you know, by myself, right?
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Just like I don't know.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: There is a lot of it that's just doesn't sort of translate.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: A lot of it's just they didn't talk about 14-hour days, seven days a week on a flight deck out to sea.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so you were in the pit crew.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: I well, definitely not a pit crew.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: I was I you know, I I was You had a flag on a few.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: I didn't have a flag.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: I did I was the you know, I did a lot of different things in the Navy, but one of them in on the flight deck would be the last person to check the jet and then give that thumbs up at the end.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, the thumb thumbs up is important and then thumbs up is a cool job because it feels like you're launching the jet, you know?
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: It does.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Like you you you put your thumb up and then the thing goes, it's like cool.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: That's cool.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you you made it, you made it.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: Could you have uh flown a plane if you wanted to?
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Can you call it a plane?
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: Am I doing that wrong?
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Well, it's jet, but wait, you can call it a plane.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, why not?
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: But I I had no interest like you in actually flying the planes.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's probably like a very, very small percentage of people that do it, right?
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, look, is there a more badass job than a fighter pilot?
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, you probably have to have phenomenal vision.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, phenomenal vision and like nerves of steel, and I think you have to be really good looking.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: I think that's like part of it.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: Like Goose was goose wasn't that good looking.
- 13:50unknown: I know.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: That's why he died.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: But was Goose good looking in the in uh in the 80s?
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: Was that a good looking guy?
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: He was dating he landed Meg Ryan.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was like that's pretty good.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: That is pretty good.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: I would imagine that seeing this, a lot of people are probably like, yeah, but then when it comes push comes to shove, you're like, hmm, I'm going to law school.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it would be cool, but let's save that for those guys.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: But what about uh so for me?
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: The first one was how many times they play that Berlin song?
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: Not the Berlin song.
- 14:20SPEAKER_02: I was like, how much money do they spend on Highway to the Danger Zone that they needed to get their money's worth?
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: Because my god, it was like the theme, you know how like Titanic is a very good thing.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's a theme, yeah.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Kenny Loggins having a moment in the 80s for sure.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: I love Kenny Loggins.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Soundtrack is everything goes right back to my yacht rock, my love of Kenny Loggins, Caddyshack, the theme of that, Foot Loose, the theme of that.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's a star.
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: Is he still alive?
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: I think he is still alive.
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: Another way that it had an effect is the tail hook scandal.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: Have you ever heard of this?
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: I have not.
- 14:51SPEAKER_02: Okay, so I can't remember when it I think it was like in the late 80s, early 90s.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: I didn't actually put the date of it.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: There was a scandal where there was a tail hook, it's a conference, right?
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: In Vegas, and all these military people were hanging out in the hallways in this hotel.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, that was a ladybug.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: That was a ladybug.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: By the way, this lighting is incredible.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: I've never really had such good lighting in my Zooms.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: So they were hanging out in the hallways during this conference, getting hammered.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: Hundreds of officers are all there.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: 83 women and seven men were sexually assaulted and harassed just walking through this hallway to the point where several high-ranking Navy leaders had to resign.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: They were forced into retirement.
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: Hundreds of officers' careers were infected.
- 15:38SPEAKER_02: And a lot of people felt that it was partly to blame for Top Gun because Top Gun had really glamorized the fighter pilot lifestyle, the fast jets, the partying, the boys' club type of things.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: And it reinforced the machismo excess type of culture.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: And it changed how naval aviators were portrayed publicly, what they would let them put in movies and everything.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: And it basically killed off the sequel for decades.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: So they were planning on doing another Top Gun sequel, like pretty soon after.
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: But because the Navy was like, we can't risk, you know, having this look bad because of this huge scandal, they were like, we're just gonna kill it off.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: And that's why when they made the second movie, when they made Maverick, there was none of that.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: There was none of the like partying or anything like that.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, a little, a little piano scene, but still.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: A little piano scene, but like when Tom Cruise was viewed as being a bad guy, they tossed him out at the bar for the barkeep.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: And uh, here's yes, great point.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: And and I'm gonna tell you, in my experience, two things.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: I had never experienced anything like that with like naval officers.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: To me, they were so kind of like on point.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: They would have tea time, like they were like very like decorum was a big thing for those guys.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: So that's that surprises me a little bit.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: But I guess you know what?
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Maybe it is Top Gun's fault.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, that I mean, I think now they've really rehabbed the image, but I think for a long time after this, a lot of like high-ranking officials that were kind of and it was not just there were high-ranking officials that were a part of it, which like I I would like to know like what was happening?
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: Were they just all hanging out in the hallway and people were walking by and they were just like groping them like it was Dorothy and the munchkins, you know?
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: I know that seems a little crazy.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, like, what's happening in that hallway?
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: I know, but also, and it was over the course of like a couple days, too.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, it went up to like rape.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: So, like what in the hallway?
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: Well, it said sexual assault, so I'm thinking they probably pulled people into rooms, maybe.
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: Actually, I that's a legend.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: I don't know that it was rape, but it did say it said sexual assault and more.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: Like, what's past sexual assault?
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: You know, I didn't like read the individual things, but it went far beyond groping.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: There were some that was it was also some of the people that got in trouble were the high-ranking officials that like ignored it and like brushed it under the rug.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: That I could see.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: And the the voice club thing I could see, like watching out for each other.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: I didn't know that that's a huge piece of it because it's a necessary piece of it, you know.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, to trust trust each other.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, you fly really close to each other.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:57SPEAKER_02: Um and you're, you know, snuggling in class.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: Snuggling, hugging, touching.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: Did you ever snuggle anyone in class?
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm gonna be honest with you.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: Like, I I was you know, you get into those, like that sort of brotherhood kind of thing.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: I've given a good hug.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: Do you know when I left the Navy?
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: I hugged the jets on the way out, literally hugged them.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: It was wild.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: So, you know what's funny though?
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: I that when you say tail hug, when when I was in are you are you up for a quick ghost story?
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: Always.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, obviously.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: So I had this friend who passed away in the Navy, and I didn't know if like so I don't know who to attribute this to.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: My friend that passed away, my grandfather sometimes I thought.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: But this is a true this is a true story, like it sticks with me to this day.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: So I'm on the flight deck.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: We're doing this operation where you you have you're on a boat, but you can't have lights on a boat at night because if you're doing operations, because like then people could see you pretty easy, right?
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so it's dark as shit.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: So I'm like, I'm moving all around the flight deck, moving like you know, where there's 70 jets moving all around.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: It's dark.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: You have flashlights, but they're like they're very covered up.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: They're they're covered up with these cones, almost like just to dim the light, real dim.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: So I'm walking around, and then all of a sudden I feel this tug on the back of my shirt, right?
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: And I almost simultaneously my my whole body vibrates from like my toes to my head.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: And one of the tail hooks had malfunctioned and slammed down to the ground.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: And usually they're on this like hydraulic pump where they kind of like where they can like be released and they'll kind of like go down kind of slow.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: Things this thing, they weigh like 900 pounds.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: This thing slammed down the ground, and it's got this like hammerhead kind of top to it because it that's what catches the wire.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: So it slams down the ground, shakes my whole body, and then I turn back behind me real quick to kind of like hug.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I guess I was gonna hug.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: Like hug, hug whoever was behind me, and there was not a soul anywhere near me.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: That is a true story.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: And I was like, what the frig?
- 19:50SPEAKER_02: You know, could it have just like malfunctioned?
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: Well, it was it it's more that like so the the tail definitely malfunctioned, dropped to the ground, could have killed me, but something pulled me back, like physically pulled me back.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, like now that I'm like looking back on it, could it have been like my my parasympathetic nervous system kicking in without my realizing it yet?
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: Could it have been someone who saw me and was like moving towards something really quick too?
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Because there's a lot of fast action, and they just kind of gave me a tug back and didn't have time for the fucking theory.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: They were like, this guy's a hugger, I'm gonna do this quick.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: But yeah, no, that that's a true story, kind of wild story.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: Wow, that is wild.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: Your tail hook story is a little bit less jaunty than that tail hook story, but no, yeah, less it's sexual assaults.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's sexual assault, way less.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: Almost as much groping, but not quite.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: Plenty of groping by unseen entities.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, all right.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: Should we talk about the first movie?
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, of course.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, what is there something else?
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Do you want to- Oh no, because I was just having this like weird memory.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: I had a whole thing go through my head just then.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: Because you said we were talking about groping, we were talking about ghosts, and then in my head it was like, would you have sex with a hot ghost?
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: Like right now, no.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: Like, would that be cheating?
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: Great question.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: Great question.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: That that was actually in did you ever watch American Horror Story the first season with Connie Britton?
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: That was actually one of the things that one of the ghosts came downstairs and had sex with her, and she thought it was her husband in Dominatrix gear with his face covered, but it was a ghost.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, am I single in my 20s?
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: Sure, you know, depends on the ghosts.
- 21:30SPEAKER_02: I mean, like, what are we talking here?
- 21:31SPEAKER_02: A young Robert Redford.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: So it is cheating though.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: Well, I in my 20s, it wouldn't have been.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: So if you so if young Robert Redford, a young I don't know why that was like the person that came into it.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, look, I get it.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: Uh peak Robert Redford or Paul Newman.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: Potato Pitado, either one of them.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: Or like, what about Paul Walker?
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, that's right.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: He definitely dead.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: Good point.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: Paul Walker at any point, yes, a hundred percent.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: He was my first line.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Cheating, it's it's it's cheating.
- 21:59SPEAKER_02: I mean never.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Now?
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: To be honest, because I don't even think that Tucker would care.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because it's almost like well, I well, he would care if it was like a kind of like a recurrence.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: It'd be like, all right, you can have like Yeah, if I was like having an affair with like dead Paul Walker over and over there.
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: If I'm dabbling in ghost sexual relations, there's a deeper issue here that we need to work on in our marriage, you know, like my mental state.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like if you're like bringing it on through like enchantments, then that's a problem.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: But like if anyone You're hearing on it's it's June, okay?
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: You're getting too.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: Hey, let's readdress this come Halloween.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, maybe we can do a sexy ghost episode.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, could you do it?
- 22:41SPEAKER_02: How can we we'll have to figure out a good angle?
- 22:43SPEAKER_02: What about you?
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: Would I I feel like it probably is cheating?
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: I would do it if I was saying I love that like you're more concerned about the cheating aspect and not oh, like would you have sex with a ghost?
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: No, I would.
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: Like hands down, no question.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like I totally would.
- 22:58unknown: Yeah.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: For sure, for sure.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: All right, can we talk about Topka on the movie now?
- 23:01SPEAKER_02: Or are you?
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 23:03SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: One more thing.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: It's called something.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: There's like sleep, there's like sex, like I think it's like incubus and succubus.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: Incubus and no, incubus and succubus is like a woman.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: I think they like set like sex entities.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: Sex with ghosts.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: Spectrophilia.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: Whoa.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: That's a word.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: Can you believe it?
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 23:31SPEAKER_02: That it's a real thing for sure.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: I can believe it.
- 23:35SPEAKER_02: Oh, there's a Reddit.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: I'm a guy in his mid-20s.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: Last night I had sex with a ghost.
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: We gotta move on.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: We gotta move on.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: We'll come back to that.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: We'll come back to that.
- 23:42SPEAKER_02: We gotta come back to that, yeah.
- 23:43SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 23:43SPEAKER_02: So the first movie opens with a lot of b-roll.
- 23:46SPEAKER_02: I said to myself, this is some men's porn, including you, probably.
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: It's you don't get it.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: I just knew it.
- 23:54SPEAKER_02: I just knew it.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: Even like the like the the tone of the music.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: It's like almost like church.
- 24:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: Like we're going to church right now.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: So they have their little pilot helmets with their little names on it.
- 24:05SPEAKER_02: I love the little names on the pilot helmets.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: I know my first commanding officer's name, like his call sign was.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: What?
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: So his name was Commander CUNY.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: Shout out to he ended up being coming an admiral.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: Both my both my commanding officers did.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: They well deserved two incredible men.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: But his call sign, so it was CUNY was his last name.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: And his call sign was Cunylingus.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: Not bad.
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, yeah, but like pretty good.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: That's first of all, like that doesn't no pun intended, that doesn't roll off the tongue.
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I guess not.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: And like you're oh CUNY Lingus.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: Like you kind of sound like a loser.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: You kind of also looked like the kind of guy that wasn't doing a lot of tonic.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: The funniest part too is that it looked like they went to like Hobby Lobby and got letter stickers and put them on their helmets.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: Like it did not look like it looks like in real life, too.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: Like it didn't look like this is very high tech.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: Maybe they did do that though.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: It looked like Lisa Frank stickers.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: What would what do you have a pilot name?
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: What would your pilot name be?
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: Well, I had my name on my back of my hat just hat helmet thing, just like everyone else, because I I did a lot of flight crew stuff.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: And mine was Chirp.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: Chirp?
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: C-H-I-R-P.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: So that was just like your name.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: What it was someone mispronouncing.
- 25:19SPEAKER_02: I literally have you on my phone as Greg Chirp.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: I tried to come up with one.
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: I'm not good at stuff like that.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: Doof, yeah, probably.
- 25:26SPEAKER_02: Doof.
- 25:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, that doesn't make sense anymore.
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's fine.
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: Like Miss Tuck.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: That's cool.
- 25:33SPEAKER_02: Mother Tucker.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: That's my name on Twitter.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: Mother Tucker's great.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: That's my name on Twitter.
- 25:36SPEAKER_02: So I was wondering like, do you think that this movie kind of kicked off Tom Cruise's adrenaline junkie nature?
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: Because I feel like before this wasn't like Cocktail before this.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: Great movie.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: Was it a few good men before this?
- 25:47SPEAKER_02: No, that was after this, right?
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, this was it.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: And and after from this, and he does all his own stuff.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: Was he fine?
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: He's just like so.
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: Every time I saw him running, I'm like, oh god.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: He's always just so that guy, you know?
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: Although I think I'm I'm impressed by Tom Cruise.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: I mean he seems like somebody I would never want to hang out with.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: You have the couch scene stuck in your head.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: What couch scene?
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: The Oprah couch.
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: No, it's not even that.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: I just feel like he's probably the most fucking intense person you've ever met in your entire life.
- 26:17SPEAKER_02: I feel like he would probably try to like fix my life in a matter of minutes.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: He definitely is one of those people that like stares you dead in the eye.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: I hate that.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: That makes me uncomfortable.
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: That probably is something I should talk about with a therapist, but sure.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: Like that deep looking you dead in the eye and like trying to like stare into your soul.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: I don't love that.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: And then, you know, we'll move on to Kelly McGillis.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: Let's talk about her as a female lead.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: Is she pretty?
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: Does she smoke a thousand cigarettes a day because she looks like she does?
- 26:46SPEAKER_02: I don't want to be an asshole.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: Well, let's permission to speak freely here about totally.
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: She looks like she was not gonna age well.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's why Tom Cruise, you you knew that Maverick was like, this is a fling.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: There's zero chemistry in this movie.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: There's nothing about the two of them that makes me think that any of this is is real.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: Well, the only thing I will say that I s slightly disagree is that I I think if I ever would have ghost sex, it would be to take my breath away.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: Like that first, like that that little like the beat or whatever.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: It's yeah, but like they're it's so mechanical, their sex.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: It's very mechanical.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: But let's go back to their first meeting.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: He meets her in the bar, it's whatever, and then he follows her into the bathroom.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: That's horrifying.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: That's some tail hook club hallway stuff.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: Like, that is not okay.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: That would never be in a movie nowadays.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: That is completely unacceptable.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: I also like, couldn't they have got she's so much older than him?
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: Like, it was giving a little bit Mary Kay Laturno kind of.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which I I find, I think that like, look, I you know, permission to speak freely.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: I I think that like any anytime I see like the Mary Kay Laterno situation, I know it's terrible.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: But you like when I was 18, it was like well, if it if you were 18, it wouldn't have been a Mary Kay Laterno situation.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: But so like Tom Cruise is fine too.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: But if I was when I all right, so let's do it.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: When I was 18, 1920, a 40 something.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: Like yeah, I mean for perfect link.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: But she was so she was in her mid-30s and he was like 24.
- 28:19SPEAKER_02: So it wasn't actually a Mary Kay Laturno situation.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: But like it just she looked so much old, like, where was Elizabeth Shue?
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: Even though I know she was in cocktail, so like that's not really but like I just kept thinking, why couldn't it have just been somebody who was like I don't know, a little younger?
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I guess because she had to be like a teacher, kind of.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she had to have like an authority type to her.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: It couldn't have been Elizabeth Shue.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: No, it couldn't have been Elizabeth Shu.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: Who could it have been?
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: Who would have been a good at that time?
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: Gina Davis.
- 28:47SPEAKER_02: Gina No, but Gina Davis would have been young at that time.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, this was like what five, six years before a League of Their Own.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is 80s.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: This is 80s.
- 28:57SPEAKER_02: I can't even like think of who it could have been.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: Anyway, let's move on.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: So there, let's go to the volleyball scene.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: First off, jeans.
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: He's wearing jeans.
- 29:06SPEAKER_02: Jean shorts.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: No, he's in jeans.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: Full jeans.
- 29:09SPEAKER_02: And he has a watch on.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: I'm not thrown off by the watch.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: You're playing volleyball.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: Hard to bump.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: I get it.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: I don't think that you can you should be wearing a watch to play volleyball.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: And on what planet is Anthony Edwards the setter and Tom Cruise the spiker?
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: No.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: Like, no.
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: And then there's all these men there that are watching.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: Who is this what you guys did?
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: Would you do that?
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: Shirt off volleyball?
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: Do it today.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: No, but I mean, like, would you sit around and watch other people play shirt off volleyball on your day off?
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: I might.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: Because like at one point he was like, come on, one more game.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: So like you know those other men weren't like waiting to play.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 29:51SPEAKER_02: They're just there to watch.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: Hey, they love the competition.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: And it competition was stiff.
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: No pun intended.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: Well, it's funny because then they had the football scene in the second movie, and a lot of people had jeans on and jean shorts on in that one.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: And I said, I bet that's an homage.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: It's a definite homage.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: And then and the piano scene was an homage too.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: But all right, yeah.
- 30:12SPEAKER_02: So then he's like, I gotta get out of here.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: Couldn't finish the game.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: Why not?
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: Like, just finish the game.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: You you're going to her house.
- 30:19SPEAKER_02: She's in like a nightshirt.
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: You're not going out to dinner.
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: Finish the game.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: To me, honestly, this scene reminded me of like when you're young and you know you're gonna go hook up with someone, and it's like the sun's going down, and it's like you've had a great beach day with the boys, and it's like, oh my god, like those days are over for me.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 30:40SPEAKER_02: I know it's like the when you go and have a great beach day, and then you get a nice nap.
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: I'll never forget this.
- 30:46SPEAKER_02: I was on Black Island for a vacation one time, and we all went to the beach.
- 30:49SPEAKER_02: This was in my 20s, so I didn't have any any responsibility.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: Where we go to Black Island, I go to the beach, I come home, I have a nice sandwich, and then maybe some chips in it.
- 31:01SPEAKER_02: Maybe some chips in it, and then I took this like two-hour long nap with the window open, beautiful day outside, and then you get up, you take a shower, you go to go to dinner, and nothing better than that.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: You know what's you know what's better than that almost is here's my here's my move.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: Virginia Beach, constantly at the beach.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: You come home, you're sandy, your your apartment's ice cold air conditioning.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: You take a shower, you lay on the couch, movie on, accidental fall asleep because you're so cold and you know, like like unbelievable.
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: Like just any kind of outdoor day nap to reset the day.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: Reset the day.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: I think you're ready for the night.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then you're ready for the night, and you can go out because you're in your 20s.
- 31:44SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 31:45SPEAKER_02: Now it's like that nap is that's bedtime.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: That's bedtime.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: You know what I noticed?
- 31:51SPEAKER_02: Tom Cruise looks strikingly like Scott Wolf.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: Do you know who I'm talking about?
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: Bailey Sadie.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: I don't know who Scott Wolf.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: Scott Wolf is like when people make that joke, the team version.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but like I don't know.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: Scott Wolf is pretty charming.
- 32:03SPEAKER_02: And I wonder like where that where those create is it choices or is it just like being a better actor?
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: Because I don't know.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: Tom Cruise, I don't know.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: Tom Cruise is a good actor.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: You have to admit it.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: He's a good he's a good actor in acting in the way that he acts.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: What about the vampire Lestat?
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that was good.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: That was good.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and that's it.
- 32:22SPEAKER_02: Or like I was thinking we should do this for an episode, uh, Magnolia.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: Magnolia, Tropic Thunder.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: He's unrecognizable.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he sure is.
- 32:29SPEAKER_02: Anyways, I talk about the sex scene.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: I put woof, like two robots banging.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: Which we will we are not far from seeing.
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: No, no, we're not we're not far from seeing a robot Tom Cruise either.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: And then Meg Ryan shows up in, I believe her first role.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: It could be one of her first roles, if not her first role.
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: And there's a little bit of inappropriate snuggling between Maverick and Meg Ryan.
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: I noticed that.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: There might have been, was there a smooch?
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: It was like this dude, it's the same sort of category as I'm putting my leg up.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: He's like, just you be careful because I'm running the show.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty much to have control of every aspect of your life.
- 33:05SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna kill you later, too.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: And yeah, yeah, that's right.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Don't worry about that.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: Your life, I'm not concerned.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 33:13SPEAKER_02: So goose dies.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: We'll talk about that.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: Uh did it feel like okay, so I didn't really understand what happened.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: He fucked up, Tom Cruise fucked up.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: Well, he no, it's it's there he did fuck up in a way, but there was like a malfunction with the ejection, right?
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and so like something happened and he smashed into the the canopy, right?
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: So it felt like they didn't like give it a chance to see like maybe he's not dead, maybe there's some rehab here.
- 33:37SPEAKER_02: They just threw him right on a rope and lifted him right up into that helicopter.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's dead.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: He's fucking toast.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: There was a there was no way around it.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: When you eject from an airplane, so we hit the canopy.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: So if you eject from the airplane, you don't just it's not like you're letting like like you're undoing your safety belt and just like flying out, you're like literally exploded out.
- 33:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and but you have a parachute usually, right?
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: You do have a parachute, yeah.
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it should all work out for that time.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: That sounds terrible.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: That sounds eject.
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: I forget why they had to eject it that something something happened with the plane, right?
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: I didn't know what was going on.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was it was a little confusing, even with the second watch.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: But he's dead.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and Tom Cruise was obviously this the theme is he pushes the issue.
- 34:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:16SPEAKER_02: He's a maverick, he's a maverick, and then everyone's like, You're gonna need to get over this.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: Did you notice though that when somebody died in the second movie, although nobody died in the second movie besides Val Kilmer, but like he said the same thing to one of the kids about it.
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: Like he was like, it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen more.
- 34:35SPEAKER_02: You need to move on or something.
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: Like, whatever somebody said to him in the first movie, he said to somebody in the second movie.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: And and I think that like, yeah, I I do like that no one died in the second movie except for Val Kilmer, which was actually really sad.
- 34:49SPEAKER_02: Well, especially knowing that he died like a few years later, too.
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but I uh I was wondering if maybe like because I think this movie, the second movie was also probably an attempt at recruitment.
- 34:59SPEAKER_02: I would imagine that the military's struggling, but I wonder if they purposely made no one die because they were like, we're trying to get people to sign up.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, good point.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: When back in the 80s it would have been like, it's part of like you might die was part of the appeal.
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: I had a list of the people I thought that were gonna die in the second movie.
- 35:18SPEAKER_02: I kept being like, I bet it's gonna be him, I bet it's gonna be him, and then it wasn't.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: Anyway, I thought it was gonna be Powell.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, we get it, we get at least.
- 35:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we'll we'll talk about that when we get there.
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: But this is okay that we're like riffing.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: This is Yeah, because it's about both of them, you know.
- 35:30SPEAKER_02: So they have the graduation, and then I'm like, sweet, it's over.
- 35:35SPEAKER_02: Nope, 20 more minutes, fuck, here we go.
- 35:37SPEAKER_02: And then they do their little ditty, they finish, they do a great job.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: A lot of standing ovations.
- 35:42SPEAKER_02: Do they do standing ovations in the sure oh yeah?
- 35:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's the thing.
- 35:46SPEAKER_02: I thought maybe that was just for the movie.
- 35:48SPEAKER_02: So when they come back from the mission, you guys are all going out there.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: When it when you only when you like kill someone.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like when you when you've done something, when you've unloaded.
- 36:03SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:06SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 36:07SPEAKER_02: All right, let's move on to Maverick.
- 36:08SPEAKER_02: So I was kind of excited.
- 36:10SPEAKER_02: I love when I watch a show, even if I'm hating the TV show, I'm always excited for the season premiere of the next season because I'm like, oh, let's see where they are now.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: And I kind of felt like that about this.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: Like, where is Tom Cruise gonna be now?
- 36:23SPEAKER_02: Where's Maverick now?
- 36:24SPEAKER_02: We start out exactly the same.
- 36:26SPEAKER_02: The pit crew.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: I know it's not a pit crew, but we're gonna just call it a pit crew because that's what it looks like.
- 36:31SPEAKER_02: Tom Cruise is working on a thing.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: I thought they were gonna come back and be like Maverick, we need you to come back, but it turns out he was there the whole time.
- 36:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he never really left.
- 36:39SPEAKER_02: So he goes to this on this mission to get to 10 Mach Mach 10.
- 36:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:46SPEAKER_02: And feel like was it nine Mach?
- 36:48SPEAKER_02: No, they were supposed, they wanted to go to 9 Mach, but he said, I'm going to 10 because Tom Bruce can't do anything half-assed.
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: That's his problem, though.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: He he like ruined all those people's jobs.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: That pissed me off right away.
- 36:59SPEAKER_02: Just relax, like just do your job.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: Like, you don't always have to go above and beyond.
- 37:04SPEAKER_02: You can just go to, you know?
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: Breaking everything too.
- 37:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know because when they said the thing, they were like, and now we can't use that plane.
- 37:12SPEAKER_02: It was like, oh man.
- 37:13SPEAKER_02: I feel like 2026 technology is a little bit dangerous for Tom Cruise.
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't know if he can handle it.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: I was so stressed out this whole scene.
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: Now I saw a theory that he dies in this scene, and the rest of the movie is a dream.
- 37:27SPEAKER_02: That's insane.
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: I know, but think about it though, he probably should have died.
- 37:30SPEAKER_00: He should have died.
- 37:31SPEAKER_00: He ended up in, like, remember he like he he was like 12 states over.
- 37:35unknown: Yeah.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: He's like, Yeah, we're just gonna go.
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: So we meet Jennifer Conley.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: Did you know that she was a character from the first movie?
- 37:43SPEAKER_00: So no.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: So she wasn't actually, she was mentioned in the first movie.
- 37:46SPEAKER_02: There's a scene where they talk about Maverick getting in trouble with the admiral's daughter, Penny Benjamin.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: So she's Penny Benjamin.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: Are we supposed to follow that?
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: Well, I think it was just like an Easter egg, kind of.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: I gotta be honest, I feel bad for Jennifer Conley in this movie.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: She made me sad.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: You're like a 55-year-old woman just hanging around waiting for this fucking man child to like throw you a bone.
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: Is that what you think she was doing?
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: Because it almost felt like she was playing coy, you know?
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: And and whose kid is it?
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: I don't not his.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: This is like 25-year-old woman bullshit.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: This is not 55-year-old woman bullshit.
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: What are you?
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: You should have been like, get the fuck out of here.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: He's already broken your heart multiple times.
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: I kind of think they should have just made her his wife.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: Don't you get the sense that it's headed in that direction?
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but like, why not?
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: Maverick can still be a rebel.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: Yes, totally.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: Or even ex-wife.
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: Or even ex-wife, just to show, like, this is sad.
- 38:38SPEAKER_02: You're sneaking him out the window.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: This is so sad that this is what you're like, this is what you're putting up with.
- 38:45SPEAKER_02: You're Jennifer Conley.
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: You deserve better than this.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, unless you're and she deserved better than that fucking wig they had her in, which I couldn't stop looking at.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, see, I would have never guessed that.
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: It was terrible.
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: It was terrible.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: The moment I saw it, I said, that's a wig, which is never a good sign.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: Have you ever seen Requiem for a Dream?
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: And I'd rather never think about it again.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: That's one of those movies I'll never watch again.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: No, that's one of those movies that I feel like they should show kids when they're like 14 and be like, this is what happens when you do drugs.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: I I saw it when I was young and I was like, I'm disturbed.
- 39:17SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm I'm never doing heroin or whatever it is that they're doing in this movie.
- 39:22SPEAKER_02: No sex scene.
- 39:23SPEAKER_02: Did you notice that?
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: They kissed and then they were snuggling away.
- 39:27SPEAKER_02: And thank God for that.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: I was completely fine with that.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: But no, I think if they had made her because she was like giving him advice, or like maybe like a long-suffering wife that you know, she was sick of his shit and she's like, you keep taking off, whatever.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: But anything's better than him just coming in and out of her life.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: I thought like ex-wife would have been good, and that's his kid, and like he's not seeing like the opportunity he has, and then maybe she gives him another chance.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: Because I'd like to think that in the 30 years that we haven't seen you in, you've done something as an yeah, or like she has like a jerk husband now.
- 40:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: And he sees it as like a window.
- 40:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: Something.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: Anything.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: Like John Hamm is the husband.
- 40:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that would have been great.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: That's a better movie.
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: That's a better movie.
- 40:09SPEAKER_02: Although this was a really good movie.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: And then we have Val Kilmer showing up in this one, which was sad.
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: It was sad.
- 40:17SPEAKER_02: For a second, I thought that they AI'd Val Kilmer and he was already dead.
- 40:21SPEAKER_02: And then and then I realized he died like two years after this.
- 40:24SPEAKER_02: But you know, he he had the neck thing and the relationship was sweet though.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: The relationship was sweet that Iceman.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: Like Iceman was like always the like it kind of it was like, hey, look, this like out of control.
- 40:36SPEAKER_00: Like so Iceman was brave, but like had limits and used reason and was smart.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: He was more well-rounded.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: And I liked how that paid off and it did not pay off for Maverick.
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: Like Maverick, Maverick's a full bird captain.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: Like that's a really good rank.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: But like Val Kilmer is an admiral.
- 40:52SPEAKER_00: That's like okay, awesome.
- 40:53SPEAKER_00: You know, he's like in charge of the whole damn fleet.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: Probably is good health insurance.
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: I would imagine.
- 40:59SPEAKER_02: I would imagine.
- 41:00SPEAKER_02: So the whole thing with the mission, the entire time I'm like, why can't Maverick just do it?
- 41:05SPEAKER_02: Why are they putting these kids in here?
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: And then when they finally had him do it, I'm like, okay, who cares if he dies?
- 41:10SPEAKER_02: And I'm not saying to be an asshole, but I am saying, like, I think this is how Maverick's meant to die.
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: And I kind of thought he should die.
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: But I feel like they're setting up another sequel.
- 41:19SPEAKER_00: I felt like again, better movie if he dies.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: Because it teaches everyone something.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: Like, look, that guy was brave.
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: We needed that.
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: And that was useful for the moment.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: But you live like that, you fucking die.
- 41:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: You live by the sword, die by the sword.
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: You know?
- 41:32SPEAKER_00: That's very that's biblical.
- 41:34SPEAKER_02: Is that biblical?
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: Yes, it is.
- 41:36SPEAKER_00: That's literally Jesus.
- 41:38SPEAKER_02: Look at me.
- 41:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I don't know.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: I I did like the end.
- 41:43SPEAKER_02: I thought it was kind of like, okay, like Rooster comes back.
- 41:46SPEAKER_02: That's pretty stupid.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: They find Jet.
- 41:49SPEAKER_02: Everything else got blown up.
- 41:50SPEAKER_02: There's people all around.
- 41:52SPEAKER_02: They find a jet.
- 41:53SPEAKER_02: They get out of there.
- 41:54SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 41:54SPEAKER_02: Hangman saved them, which I did like because I do like Glenn Powell.
- 41:58SPEAKER_02: I think he's very charming.
- 42:00SPEAKER_00: You know what I would have liked now that we've talked we've had all this ghost talk?
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: Like, what about a little goose sort of having to be in the backseat when Rooster is like unsure?
- 42:08SPEAKER_02: And he's like he did.
- 42:09SPEAKER_02: He was like, Dad, speak to me.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: But he didn't.
- 42:12SPEAKER_02: No.
- 42:12SPEAKER_02: But then he trusted his gut.
- 42:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, how could he how would he have known anything about his dad?
- 42:17SPEAKER_02: He was like four when his dad died.
- 42:18SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 42:19SPEAKER_00: That's a good point.
- 42:20SPEAKER_02: He didn't know anything about it.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, no, because like when he's like to Tom Cruise, he's like pissed about it.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: Like, he's like, I miss my dad.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: And it's like, Yeah.
- 42:25SPEAKER_02: And also, I think that Tom Cruise should have been like, Your mom told me not to let you go to the school.
- 42:30SPEAKER_02: Remember?
- 42:31SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 42:32SPEAKER_02: Because his whole thing was that his mom, Meg Ryan, asked Maverick to not let him go to the naval academy because she didn't want him to die like his dad.
- 42:41SPEAKER_02: And then Tom Cruise like fell on his sword and was like, Okay, I'll pretend that I'm the one who didn't want it.
- 42:46SPEAKER_02: And it's like, just tell him she's dead.
- 42:47SPEAKER_02: Who cares?
- 42:48SPEAKER_02: So she's dead?
- 42:49SPEAKER_02: How'd she die?
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: He just said before she died, she asked him that.
- 42:52SPEAKER_02: Oh I wonder how their relationship did she have to die?
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: Like Meg Ryan's alive.
- 42:57SPEAKER_02: Like let Meg Ryan come back.
- 42:58SPEAKER_02: I would have loved to have seen her for a pop-in.
- 43:00SPEAKER_00: Do you think that Maverick and Meg Ryan bank?
- 43:03SPEAKER_00: Do you think they had a cry bang?
- 43:07SPEAKER_02: I think if anyone would do it, it would be Maverick because he's just a glutton for punishment.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: Need for speed.
- 43:13SPEAKER_02: Need for speed.
- 43:15SPEAKER_02: But yeah, overall I thought Maverick was way better.
- 43:17SPEAKER_02: I loved, I mean, the men were hotter.
- 43:19SPEAKER_02: That helped.
- 43:20SPEAKER_00: Well, it's the freaking.
- 43:21SPEAKER_02: What do you think?
- 43:22SPEAKER_02: Which movie do you think the men were hotter in?
- 43:25SPEAKER_00: Great question.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: I think probably the men are hotter in the new one.
- 43:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 43:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, they just are a little more they had some diversity in there.
- 43:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:40SPEAKER_02: You know?
- 43:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:41SPEAKER_02: I don't think there was a single black person in the first movie.
- 43:43SPEAKER_02: I know they had a lady, a lady pilot.
- 43:45SPEAKER_02: They had a lady pilot, which also I thought it was interesting.
- 43:48SPEAKER_02: There was no romantic entanglement there with her and Rooster or Hangman.
- 43:52SPEAKER_00: I knew lady fighter pilots.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: And they were fucking awesome.
- 43:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I bet.
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: And they were and they were like hot.
- 43:58SPEAKER_00: It's like lady drummers.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: It's like, dude, why is this lady so badass and hot?
- 44:03SPEAKER_00: I I remember being like 20 something years old and being like back in a time where I was thought I could probably, you know, I had confidence.
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: But I was like, this chick is out of my league.
- 44:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like times a thousand.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: I mean who you're competing with the actual fighter pilots, like come on.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: Fighter pilots.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: So no, but she needs something.
- 44:23SPEAKER_00: Oh she could get, I mean, it's like, who is right for the female, the incredibly attractive.
- 44:29SPEAKER_02: I feel like something completely different.
- 44:32SPEAKER_02: Like I think a female fighter pilot needs any fighter pilot in general, needs the complete opposite, you know, even like a lawyer or like something that like is maybe like somebody that works in the Navy but in an office.
- 44:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:46SPEAKER_02: Because you also need somebody that's gonna understand your life.
- 44:48SPEAKER_00: But imagine that guy's life where it's like, oh, she's just going out to sea for six months with those hot dudes.
- 44:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but women do it all the time, have their husbands go out to sea all the time.
- 44:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, with a bunch of hot dudes.
- 44:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, with a bunch of hot dudes, that's right.
- 45:01SPEAKER_02: So that's a tough one.
- 45:02SPEAKER_02: But yeah, no, this was good.
- 45:04SPEAKER_02: I'm glad that Maverick was way better.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: I told you though, I when you texted me that you did not like Top Gun, which is a wild thing to say.
- 45:11SPEAKER_00: I knew that you were gonna like Maverick.
- 45:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's fucked off.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: It's way better.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: There's just like that last, like when you're like finally ready, like, oh, they're gonna do this thing they've been talking about the whole entire time, and they do it and they're like going through it, and it's like they're like, Oh, this is the part we have to like shoot straight up.
- 45:23SPEAKER_02: It's like it's all very quite blind, like just launch the things blind.
- 45:27SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 45:28SPEAKER_02: And but it I understood what was happening, and I think that was the big difference.
- 45:31SPEAKER_02: Is I also thought it was interesting that the difference in how we view the military and our country from then to now.
- 45:39SPEAKER_02: I was reading something where they were saying it's no longer like what your country can do for you, it's what you can do for your country.
- 45:45SPEAKER_02: And now it's like it's not what you can do for your country, it's what your country can do for you because it's so much more likely you're signing up the military to get college, to get the, you know, like things that no, I know, I totally I totally agree.
- 45:57SPEAKER_00: This isn't like World War II.
- 45:58SPEAKER_02: This is yeah, there's a clear-cut enemy.
- 46:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, even in the second movie, there was no country, they didn't name a country, they didn't have a face.
- 46:06SPEAKER_02: The enemy was just some random nameless thing because any country you could have named as the enemy, people were gonna have a problem with because it's complicated.
- 46:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, it's it's actually brilliant not to name a country.
- 46:18SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 46:18SPEAKER_02: I thought it was good.
- 46:19SPEAKER_02: All right, well, I think that's a that's about it.
- 46:21SPEAKER_02: Okay.
