- 1:15Karalee Anjewierden welcom back, Kari.
- 1:17It's good to have you.
- 1:19Thank you.
- 1:20Glad to be here.
- 1:21Oh, and LaMira Wheelwright being here again.
- 1:25Today, I'm happy to be.
- 1:27I love it.
- 1:28I love these opportunities to come and talk about our Savior, guys.
- 1:33And thank you so much for joining us as well.
- 1:36We are talking, we're doing a series right now about the names and the titles of Jesus Christ.
- 1:42And so we've talked about Lamb of God, what Jesus means, what Christ means, what Messiah means, what Son of God means.
- 1:48And today we're talking about the difference between Savior and redeemer.
- 1:57And so I thought we'd kick it off a little bit by first of all, LaMira, would you mind sharing with us what Savior means?
- 2:08Savior is somebody who saves us, right?
- 2:11He brings salvation.
- 2:12He saves us from danger and destruction.
- 2:16And that, that is basically what he does.
- 2:21It's one who saves, one who saves.
- 2:24I love that.
- 2:26I love that so much.
- 2:30Kari what are there any favorite verses that you found about Jesus being your Savior?
- 2:41That's a good question.
- 2:43I love in Job 19:25 as he is talking about his Redeemer.
- 2:52And I love thinking about where Job was when he made that statement.
- 3:00He had just lost everything.
- 3:03Everything.
- 3:04And yet that was the reason that he could make the statement that he made that Christ was, well, he uses redeemer, but it's still the same, right?
- 3:18He had been saved.
- 3:20He had been saved by Jesus Christ.
- 3:24And he knew that it was only from Jesus Christ that that was possible.
- 3:31After he had lost everything, his health, his family, his possessions, everything, the thing that mattered to him, what he believed Through Christ.
- 3:46I love what you shared there.
- 3:47It's beautiful.
- 3:48And I love that he uses the word Redeemer.
- 3:51I know that my Redeemer lives.
- 3:53And I think it's something like in that he'll stand again on the.
- 3:57In the latter days upon the earth.
- 3:59And though worms.
- 4:01This basically talks about his body being that he knew that his body would go to the grave, that he knew that in the latter day he would see God, you know, basically face to face.
- 4:13And I love that word Redeemer too.
- 4:18And that word Redeemer, as I was looking at it, it means to buy back that which was lost.
- 4:26And so if you pause and you look at the story of Job through that lens of a Redeemer being somebody who, if you have something and then you lose it, he can bring it back.
- 4:38He can redeem that.
- 4:39He can bring it back.
- 4:42For Job, that was so symbolic, right, that he, like you said, he had lost everything and yet his Redeemer gave it to him.
- 4:51Like it said he.
- 4:52He was able to double the amount of sheep and oxen and houses and he got 10 more children and all these things.
- 4:59I mean, he literally, in the story of Job, redeemed him and that he brought everything back.
- 5:10And, and I also think Redeemer is symbolic in the sense of, of each of our journeys, how we lived with God before we came to earth.
- 5:20We've come to earth and you know, we're not perfect guys.
- 5:24We have fallen.
- 5:26Those chains of sin and anguish and all those other things hold us down and they, they separate us from God.
- 5:38And yet the symbolic name of Redeemer can bring us back so that we're good with God.
- 5:47The, the pay.
- 5:49Jesus as a Savior has paid the price of our sins and is able to redeem us or bring us back, buy back through the price of his blood, all.
- 6:00He's paid the price of everything, right?
- 6:02And brought us back to that.
- 6:06LaMira, you look like you were thinking very deeply there something you wanted to share?
- 6:12Sorry, I like.
- 6:14I'm listening to this because I love what you shared with that the Redeemer, it's like going back and getting us.
- 6:22And the thing that struck me was in Isaiah, chapter 44, verse 22, and he says, I have blotted out as a thick cloud thy transgressions, and as a cloud thy sins return unto me, for I have redeemed thee.
- 6:41And what stuck out to me there is.
- 6:43I wrote the word choice because he says he did it, but then he asks us and invites us to return to him.
- 6:53So all these things that we've done, he's paved the way for us to return.
- 6:58And basically, because we're on this fallen world, he will come back and take us back into the presence of our Father if we choose him.
- 7:08And that's why Job received all those blessings.
- 7:10Because that famous scripture is.
- 7:14He said, you know, I know that my Redeemer liveth until I die.
- 7:18And I love that.
- 7:19He's like, I won't remove my integrity from me.
- 7:22I know what is right.
- 7:24I know I'm not gonna go into these places.
- 7:28And I feel like Job is a very physical manifestation of our eternal.
- 7:35That.
- 7:35That symbolic of that eternal is that here we are.
- 7:39And we've.
- 7:40It can be so rough and so hard and feel like everything that we know, we suddenly don't know.
- 7:47Or especially right now, there are a lot of people losing jobs and.
- 7:51And things upheaval and a coming and like all this stuff that's happening.
- 7:58And yet we have a Redeemer who will bless us and when we are there, give us so much more.
- 8:05But we have to choose that.
- 8:07We have to choose.
- 8:08And then there was another scripture.
- 8:10I just was looking at that.
- 8:11I think it was in Peter.
- 8:12It was talking about, it's not through money.
- 8:16You know, there's a play that's like, I can't.
- 8:20It's called, you can't take it with you, right?
- 8:22And it's.
- 8:23But it's the whole scripture.
- 8:25Lay not for yourself treasures on earth, right?
- 8:28But treasures in heaven.
- 8:30And we on this earth, we use money because that is what has been set on this earth.
- 8:41But that's not a God thing.
- 8:42He will bless us through the riches, but that is not what it is.
- 8:47It's through the blood of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
- 8:52And that is the greatest price that was given.
- 8:57I love that.
- 8:58Thank you.
- 8:58Thank you for sharing that.
- 9:00I love that, LaMira, because I was thinking about that too.
- 9:02As you say, choice, not only is it our choice, but he chose us first.
- 9:10It was also his choice because he was obedient to God's plan, but he chose it.
- 9:17In Galatians 1:4, he talks about.
- 9:20He gave himself.
- 9:21He gave himself.
- 9:23He chose it.
- 9:24He chose it for us.
- 9:26It was a very personal, personal giving choice that he made to deliver us for mortality.
- 9:34But the mortal combat, if you will, that we are in.
- 9:39He knew we would need what he could offer us to remove us from the heartache and the pain and the sins and all of that.
- 9:51And so I love that not only did he buy us with the price of His Blood.
- 9:58But he chose it.
- 10:00Even if it had just been one of us, he would have chosen it again and again and again.
- 10:08There's a couple of words as you guys have been talking and as I've kind of been looking at some of the verses that go along with Savior and Redeemer, there's other words that seem to pop out, and one
- 10:21is oppression or oppressors that he saves us from that deliverer.
- 10:28He's a great deliverer.
- 10:30He delivers us from sin and death and all those things.
- 10:36And.
- 10:37And I think those go hand in hand with Savior and Redeemer.
- 10:41There's a verse in Isaiah, chapter 19, verse 20, that says, and it shall be for a sign and for a witness unto the Lord of the hosts in the land of Egypt.
- 10:52For they shall cry unto the Lord because of the oppressors, and he shall send them a Savior, a great one, and he shall deliver them.
- 11:01And so often as.
- 11:04As we've been talking, there are things that feel heavy, that press down on our shoulders.
- 11:10Sometimes it's people, sometimes it's situations, Sometimes it is just physical exhaustion.
- 11:18And the things required of us just feel so, so, so heavy.
- 11:25And I know I felt that way in my life.
- 11:29And how neat it is that we can take these titles of Savior and Redeemer and apply them to each of those situations.
- 11:37Right?
- 11:38That he can not only save us from our sins, but he can help with those oppressive things that are weighing on our minds and on our shoulders and in our hearts.
- 11:49Right?
- 11:50That it's.
- 11:51He's.
- 11:51He's saving us from more than sin.
- 11:55He.
- 11:55He.
- 11:56That's where grace comes into play and all of those things.
- 12:00The empowering strength that we can tap into as we lean on Jesus as our Savior.
- 12:06He can carry us.
- 12:09That, that.
- 12:11That poem, the Footprints in the sand, you know, where He.
- 12:14You only see one set of footprints because he was carrying us through those hard times.
- 12:19That's.
- 12:20That's what a Savior means to me, is that he was there and he carried me through some of the darkest points of my life, you know?
- 12:28And I know and I trust, like Job, that He will continue to carry me and redeem me through whatever is in front of me as well.
- 12:38Right.
- 12:38LaMira, any thoughts or scriptures you'd like to tack on or personal stories you'd like to share?
- 12:46My.
- 12:46My friend just posted something.
- 12:48She's been talking about who Christ is to her on social media, and she talked about Christ, like Jesus Christ being like a spotter.
- 13:00Like when you go lift weights, the person who's going to help with that.
- 13:03And I really loved that.
- 13:06You know, we've heard the term that Christ or Jesus Christ, God won't give us anything any more than we can handle.
- 13:14And I love.
- 13:15She's like, I call BS is what she said on that.
- 13:18And I love that she goes, because that's not true.
- 13:21She's like, he will give us.
- 13:25He will.
- 13:25He won't give us anything we can't handle without our Savior, Jesus Christ.
- 13:31You know, as you talked about being Jesus, being the deliverer, I feel like when you said that Mike, literally having that spotter lift those barbells up be so I could keep pushing because I can't.
- 13:45Sometimes you'll put that load on and it's to make you stronger and it's.
- 13:51He'll.
- 13:51He'll give you heavy stuff, but he doesn't expect you to do it alone.
- 13:58He.
- 13:58But he does invite you to come to him, right?
- 14:04To all you that labor and are heavy laden, come unto me and I will give you rest.
- 14:09And that rest is just so that we can take it on together, you know, and usually his portion is more than our portion.
- 14:18Right?
- 14:19But.
- 14:20But that is something that I thought about when you said that is.
- 14:25And my friend says, and he will take the weight if we can't.
- 14:29And sometimes things don't go away, but it shifts or we shift.
- 14:36And I like to think that that's my savior and knowing that and just even that, knowing that he has, he's experienced it, he's gone through it.
- 14:47And usually if I'm like, well, has he gone through this?
- 14:50Then somehow some Bible story or some story of Christ comes up that I'm like, oh, yep, I guess he has, you know, just didn't think about it.
- 14:57So for me, I love that, that we're allowed to struggle so we can gain strength and so we can reach out to our Savior and He can lift us.
- 15:09Oh, I love that so much.
- 15:12When you said about Jesus not giving us more than we can handle.
- 15:15I know I have a whole chapter in one of my books that says that he, like I like your friends that I call B.S.
- 15:21he doesn't give you more than he can handle than you can handle with his help.
- 15:25So that it's that choice that we were talking about before.
- 15:28Do we try to handle it on our own?
- 15:30Because I know that sometimes I've been stubborn and you know, like a little two year old, you know, I want to do it myself, I want to do it by myself.
- 15:37I'm big, I'm strong, I can do this and there's other times when I'm like, oh, no, too heavy, too hard.
- 15:44Kari, any thoughts?
- 15:47I've had a couple of thoughts as we've been sitting here.
- 15:49One of the things.
- 15:51Well, going back to the story of Job, right?
- 15:53I mean, he carried a lot of stuff, but it was only manageable because he did it with Christ by his side.
- 16:03And.
- 16:04And I think that is a great example to all of us of what our lives can look like when we parries us.
- 16:13I.
- 16:14And going back to the scripture that LaMira read in Isaiah.
- 16:18You know, that thick cloud, it's a blanket.
- 16:22You know, if you've ever flown on an airplane and you're up in the clouds, you cannot see anything else.
- 16:29And to have him love us that much that all of the yucky stuff that we're in, he completely can block out any of that.
- 16:39But again, it is that choice of walking because otherwise we're waiting through all of that yuck.
- 16:48You know, he can lift us above it and bring us into that space where we can be walking on clouds, as so to speak, really.
- 16:58But the other thing I was thinking of in.
- 17:01In Isaiah 49:26, he says, I, the Lord am thy Savior and redeemer.
- 17:09And I love that because it takes me right back to John, who says, he is my Jesus.
- 17:16He's my Jesus.
- 17:18It is, again, personal.
- 17:20He's thy, you know, Savior and Redeemer.
- 17:25He can be ours if we take the time and choose to walk with him, to partner with him, to yoke with him.
- 17:34However you want to put that.
- 17:36And I love that imagery myself, with the Savior.
- 17:40And I know what that would look like.
- 17:42I would be this, you know, very puny little skinny ox in.
- 17:47In my part of the yoke.
- 17:49And.
- 17:49And.
- 17:50And Christ would be doing most of the carrying.
- 17:53But I can't do it without him.
- 17:56I wouldn't be able to pull it along.
- 17:58I.
- 17:58I have to have him there.
- 18:01I love the Torvaldsen's statue of the Savior with his hands reaching out.
- 18:09That is my Jesus.
- 18:11That is my Savior.
- 18:12That is my Redeemer.
- 18:14His hands are wide open to save me, to bring me back, to restore me.
- 18:19All of those things if I choose it.
- 18:23So beautiful.
- 18:24Kari, thank you so much for sharing that.
- 18:27A verse in Acts kind of came to mind, and I wanted to share it with you because I think it ties into everything we've been saying here.
- 18:34Acts, chapter 4, verse 12.
- 18:36For there is none other name under heaven given under.
- 18:39Among men, whereby we men may be saved.
- 18:42It's only through Jesus And I was thinking about how, you know, if we look at, like, the epic movies throughout time, you know, there's times when they're looking for the.
- 18:53The chalice of Christ.
- 18:55Water that will help you last forever.
- 18:57There was a tower in the Tower of Babel trying to build your way to heaven.
- 19:00And.
- 19:01And.
- 19:01And throughout history, people have dreamed and imagined up all these magical ways to save us, to make us have perf.
- 19:10You know, a perfect body that won't ever die or something like that.
- 19:14And the truth is this.
- 19:17This is what Jesus came for.
- 19:19He came to answer this once and for all.
- 19:23There is a way back, and we all have access to it.
- 19:27We don't need some ancient map.
- 19:30You know what I mean?
- 19:31Unless you're talking about the scriptures to help us, to help us access this eternal life, we can access it through Christ.
- 19:42In Acts 2:21, it says, Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
- 19:48How beautiful is that?
- 19:49Oh, my goodness.
- 19:51All right, LaMira, let's come.
- 19:54Come around.
- 19:55Full.
- 19:55Full figure here and.
- 19:57And wrap things up.
- 19:59Final thoughts or takeaways on Jesus being your Savior and Redeemer.
- 20:05We have to choose him every day.
- 20:07I think we've talked about that in the last episode, but it's a choice.
- 20:13And even when Kari, you know, brought out the idea of the cloud, it reminds me of the thought of how our Savior's blood dripped like rain.
- 20:26And so not only does it block it out, through the cloud is the rain that washes away everything.
- 20:36And we have to choose Him.
- 20:40Life is gonna be hard.
- 20:42People we.
- 20:44We live and work with every day are gonna be hard.
- 20:48And he knows and he has it.
- 20:53And he can deliver us.
- 20:54He can deliver us from ourselves.
- 20:56When you talk about being captive and bound, it really is through things that we cannot do ourselves, as you said, like, we.
- 21:06We can't.
- 21:07We can't be resurrected on our own.
- 21:09We can't redeem.
- 21:11But through him we can be.
- 21:13And so do we want to be.
- 21:15And how much do I want of that?
- 21:17And it's a choice, and it.
- 21:18Sometimes it feels hard, but in all honesty, it's easier when I'm with him.
- 21:25It.
- 21:26The hard doesn't always go away.
- 21:27But.
- 21:28But mentally, I feel like there's easier.
- 21:30So I.
- 21:31Those film, like my takeaways is he's my Redeemer, who's my Savior?
- 21:35That picture that Kari painte of.
- 21:38Of the Savior with his outstretched arms, they're there.
- 21:42Am I hesitant or am I running into those?
- 21:45Where am I?
- 21:47So those are my thoughts.
- 21:48Oh, good question.
- 21:49Am I hesitant or am I running into him?
- 21:52I love that.
- 21:52So beautiful.
- 21:53Kari, final takeaways or thoughts?
- 21:56Yeah, I love that, too.
- 21:57LaMira.
- 21:58One of the things that I was thinking of is just the idea of redeemer and being able to bring back that that was lost.
- 22:09And I think one of the things in my own life that I have sought for is wholeness.
- 22:16I want that wholeness.
- 22:18And that comes through him, only through him, because he saves, because he knows that danger or where the destruction is, because he brings salvation.
- 22:32And again, that idea, again, am I seeking wholeness with him because that's the only way it's possible.
- 22:41Oh, I love that.
- 22:42Thank you so much for sharing that for me.
- 22:46I.
- 22:46I've loved so much about this episode.
- 22:49And you can probably hear my Nathan in the background.
- 22:52He's my son with autism, and he's having a happy moment, which is fantastic right now.
- 22:59One of the beautiful things is I can kind of tie this in to this episode, is that Jesus is able to redeem Nathan and bring him back so that someday he will have perfect wholeness too.
- 23:11And I look forward to that day.
- 23:13I look forward to the day.
- 23:15And I'm thankful for the days he helps me when I feel pressure and oppression.
- 23:22I'm thankful for all the miles he has walked with me and carried me through difficult times.
- 23:29That felt long.
- 23:31And sometimes they did.
- 23:32They lasted years and even decades because it was so, so very hard and so, so very heavy.
- 23:39And did I get stronger through it?
- 23:41Yes.
- 23:42But.
- 23:42But I'm thankful that when I was weak, he was strong.
- 23:46And so I think there's.
- 23:47There's one verse in Psalm 106, 21, and it says, they forget their Savior, which had done great things unto them.
- 23:56My greatest prayer for myself, don't forget him.
- 24:01Don't forget him.
- 24:03Because it's when we forget him that things get harder, right?
- 24:10And then we are carrying that yoke all on our own.
- 24:13And, boy, howdy, that is not a fun place to be.
- 24:16But I.
- 24:17I testify that he lives and that he can save and redeem all of us from all the pains and sorrows and heartaches of mortality.
- 24:27And someday we can rest with him.
- 24:30And that will be glorious, too.
- 24:32I actually look forward to that.
