- 0:07Speaker 2: Hi this is nick anastasio lead editor and writer on
- 0:11Speaker 2: mall shadowlord and you're listening to aggressive negotiation so Well,
- 0:21Speaker 2: hello and welcome to Aggressive Negotiations. We are so excited
- 0:25Speaker 2: to be back. I'm not really quite sure in the
- 0:28Speaker 2: galaxy where we're coming from because we're in a hyperspace jump.
- 0:32Speaker 2: But with me, as he is every single week, is
- 0:35Speaker 2: none other than my incredible friend and dear co-host, Jedi
- 0:40Speaker 2: Master John Mills. John, are you excited for today's surprise topic?
- 0:47Speaker 1: I'm so excited. I've taken my hyperspace Dramamine. because I've
- 0:50Speaker 1: been having a little flutter in the stomach lately. So
- 0:53Speaker 1: even though we're stuck in the hyperspace lanes, that's perfectly
- 0:55Speaker 1: fine by me. And I am excited to hear about
- 0:58Speaker 1: this topic, as excited as I am to think that
- 1:00Speaker 1: people might leave us reviews on Apple podcasts. And leave
- 1:04Speaker 1: us a five-star rating, if you will, if we're not
- 1:06Speaker 1: the worst podcast you've ever heard. And in fact, I'm
- 1:08Speaker 1: willing to say we're one of the best podcasts you've
- 1:10Speaker 1: ever heard. So go ahead and leave us that star
- 1:12Speaker 1: rating and review. We would appreciate it. We love getting
- 1:16Speaker 1: the reviews because we do it for no other reason
- 1:18Speaker 1: but love of the game. So show us you love
- 1:20Speaker 1: us back. And of course, thenerdparty.com slash contact if you
- 1:23Speaker 1: have any ideas. And go ahead and reach out to
- 1:26Speaker 1: us on the socials. On X, we are at the
- 1:30Speaker 1: Jedi Masters. And you can reach the network at Join
- 1:34Speaker 1: Nerd Party or The Nerd Party on Facebook and Instagram. Okay, John.
- 1:38Speaker 2: So I have an interesting question for you. A friend
- 1:43Speaker 2: of mine had put together a video about Star Wars,
- 1:49Speaker 2: just kind of the state of Star Wars where he
- 1:50Speaker 2: is with Star Wars fandom and just kind of– it
- 1:54Speaker 2: seems as though a.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Lot has changed, right?
- 1:59Speaker 2: Like I would say the true pivot point for Star
- 2:03Speaker 2: Wars for fans was 20 years. 17 right when the
- 2:07Speaker 2: last jedi came out and it just felt like there
- 2:10Speaker 2: was a vast gulf between two segments of fans right
- 2:14Speaker 2: people who really loved that movie people who really hated
- 2:17Speaker 2: that movie and it created i think a sense of
- 2:23Speaker 2: polarization you know i mean and and when you look
- 2:26Speaker 2: at uh just where uh podcasting went, where fandom went, where,
- 2:31Speaker 2: you know, YouTube videos went. It felt as though you
- 2:36Speaker 2: went into two camps, right? You either went into hyper
- 2:38Speaker 2: reactive mode where you were somebody who criticized literally everything
- 2:45Speaker 2: that Star Wars did after that.
- 2:47Speaker 1: It was trash.
- 2:48Speaker 2: It was the worst thing you ever heard. I mean,
- 2:50Speaker 2: you know, whatever you could do to get click rage bait,
- 2:53Speaker 2: you know, that's what you wanted. Or there was this
- 2:56Speaker 2: other side of fandom that that then just seemed to
- 3:00Speaker 2: want to never give any constructive criticism on anything in
- 3:05Speaker 2: Star Wars anymore. It was just the greatest thing you'd
- 3:07Speaker 2: ever heard. It is the greatest thing you'd ever seen.
- 3:09Speaker 2: It was the greatest ever, right? Every new Star Wars
- 3:13Speaker 2: project was the best Star Wars project that had ever
- 3:16Speaker 2: been had by Star Wars. It is the best Star
- 3:19Speaker 2: Wars that had ever been Star Wars, as our friend
- 3:21Speaker 2: Yancey would say. And so, So I guess the question
- 3:25Speaker 2: that I wanted to ask you is that all through this, right,
- 3:29Speaker 2: we've been doing this show for a really long time.
- 3:32Speaker 2: You know, we're past 450 episodes of this show.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Yes.
- 3:37Speaker 2: And so just a conversation I wanted to have with
- 3:40Speaker 2: you is like, dude, why do you keep doing this? Right.
- 3:45Speaker 2: with the crazy fandom world that we live in. I mean,
- 3:48Speaker 2: let's be honest, our numbers aren't amazing. We have tens
- 3:52Speaker 2: and tens of listeners and we're so thankful for all
- 3:54Speaker 2: of them. But like, what is it that keeps you
- 3:56Speaker 2: coming back every week to talk about this franchise that
- 4:00Speaker 2: really seems to have been through the ringer since 2017?
- 4:04Speaker 1: Honestly, I'm talking to you, obviously. And the thing is,
- 4:08Speaker 1: it's not just talking to you because we do that
- 4:09Speaker 1: every day by text message, as most people do now.
- 4:13Speaker 1: But talking to you and it's a, topic we have
- 4:16Speaker 1: in common. These are conversations you and I would have anyway.
- 4:19Speaker 1: And I'm going to be honest with you. It's not
- 4:21Speaker 1: because I think that we're great historical figures or anything
- 4:25Speaker 1: like that. We will be forgotten in time by all
- 4:28Speaker 1: but the Lord. And I think that there is just
- 4:33Speaker 1: the fact that this is going to sound completely demented,
- 4:39Speaker 1: but I consider it a responsibility to share healthy conversations
- 4:44Speaker 1: with the world. Part of that has to do with
- 4:47Speaker 1: the fact that I picked up podcasting at a certain point.
- 4:50Speaker 1: It's how I've made a lot of friends, including you.
- 4:53Speaker 1: But coming back here and demonstrating to people I know
- 4:59Speaker 1: personally who are in one camp or the other, that
- 5:01Speaker 1: it's possible to exist in a rational place and point
- 5:05Speaker 1: them to something that I'm proud to be a part of,
- 5:09Speaker 1: where you and I, we're demonstrating to the world, in
- 5:13Speaker 1: my opinion, that this is possible. It's possible to have
- 5:15Speaker 1: the constructive criticism. It's possible to come in and have
- 5:19Speaker 1: something that you're not nuts about. You and I differ
- 5:21Speaker 1: on stuff. I mean, without talking about the jokier sort
- 5:25Speaker 1: of arguments that you and I have had and everything
- 5:26Speaker 1: like that, or even the serious ones that we've had
- 5:28Speaker 1: about different stuff, we can talk about Tales from the Underworld.
- 5:32Speaker 1: I love the Cad Bane arc. You weren't nuts about it. Okay.
- 5:35Speaker 1: But at the same time, none of us ever comes
- 5:37Speaker 1: at it like, Oh, this show cured my cancer when
- 5:41Speaker 1: nobody else is like, oh, this show traveled through the
- 5:44Speaker 1: past and murdered my ancestors. Like it's what normal people are.
- 5:50Speaker 1: And again, not trying to give ourselves too much credit
- 5:54Speaker 1: or anything, but yeah, I think that people in this
- 5:58Speaker 1: day and age have a responsibility to share healthy conversations
- 6:03Speaker 1: with the world.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I like the way that you put that, and
- 6:09Speaker 2: I think that there really is so much to that.
- 6:13Speaker 2: There's where you went with it, that the idea of
- 6:18Speaker 2: being able to talk about this thing we love and
- 6:21Speaker 2: be okay with the fact that we're not going to
- 6:24Speaker 2: love everything. I remember just getting back– you know, um,
- 6:31Speaker 2: into fandom big time. And really then that fandom was
- 6:34Speaker 2: super charged in many ways, uh, when I got into podcasting, um, and,
- 6:40Speaker 2: you know, cause I'd always been a huge Star Wars fan,
- 6:41Speaker 2: but then to find this outlet, to be able to
- 6:43Speaker 2: talk about it, you know, consistently, uh, and then put
- 6:47Speaker 2: it out into the world was, you know, whole new thing, uh,
- 6:50Speaker 2: as they say on that Disney film, it was a.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Whole new world.
- 6:53Speaker 2: And it was interesting then to just be in the
- 6:59Speaker 2: larger ecosphere of Star Wars and having people who didn't
- 7:03Speaker 2: agree with you all the time and whatnot. And it's
- 7:08Speaker 2: interesting because I think it is healthy for us to
- 7:14Speaker 2: be able to talk about things where we can say,
- 7:17Speaker 2: I liked this, but I didn't.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Love this about it.
- 7:20Speaker 2: There is no binary when it comes to opinion and
- 7:24Speaker 2: when it comes to art, right? And I think that
- 7:28Speaker 2: we can all agree that there are definitely some things
- 7:33Speaker 2: artistically where a majority of people are like, okay, that
- 7:37Speaker 2: was just trash. And you could name... Any number of
- 7:40Speaker 2: films where people like the– not just the popular consensus,
- 7:44Speaker 2: but it's like there's consensus across the board except for
- 7:47Speaker 2: like the 0.1 percent where it's like, oh, yeah, nobody
- 7:51Speaker 2: liked that or even thought it was good or thought
- 7:54Speaker 2: it was worth watching ever again. If we burned all
- 7:57Speaker 2: of the film that it was ever put on, nobody
- 7:59Speaker 2: would miss it. Aside from that, that's not the way
- 8:02Speaker 2: most things are. And I do think it's just incredibly
- 8:06Speaker 2: important for us to be able to have good conversations
- 8:09Speaker 2: about things. And I think the other part about this
- 8:13Speaker 2: for me is Star Wars continues to be when it's
- 8:17Speaker 2: at its best about something that I think the world
- 8:20Speaker 2: actually needs, which is it continues to reinforce the very
- 8:25Speaker 2: simple idea that George had from the beginning about that
- 8:29Speaker 2: if you live a selfless life, it is better than
- 8:34Speaker 2: living a selfish life. It's better for you and it's
- 8:37Speaker 2: better for everyone around you. And the ripple effects of that,
- 8:41Speaker 2: you know, cascade out into the larger galaxy. And, you know,
- 8:45Speaker 2: I think that's the thing that I continue to continually
- 8:49Speaker 2: come back to with this series is that when it's
- 8:52Speaker 2: at its best, it's reinforcing something that I think this
- 8:54Speaker 2: world just kind of desperately needs more of, you know?
- 8:59Speaker 1: To borrow from one of the better entries in the
- 9:00Speaker 1: Star Trek series, it's better for you, it's better for us,
- 9:05Speaker 1: it's better for them. And I think that, I mean,
- 9:10Speaker 1: that's the thing too, right? Is like, it's so wild
- 9:14Speaker 1: because I think, you know, and let's keep it contained
- 9:18Speaker 1: just to Star Wars fandom. There's– people have just spent
- 9:23Speaker 1: tons and tons of digital ink talking about toxicity in fandoms, blah, blah, blah, blah,
- 9:27Speaker 1: all that type of stuff. You find it in every
- 9:29Speaker 1: type of fandom. It's not unique to anyone. And I
- 9:33Speaker 1: think that keeping it focused in the Star Wars fandom,
- 9:37Speaker 1: it's important to realize it's okay to just have fun
- 9:42Speaker 1: with it sometimes. And I think what it is is
- 9:44Speaker 1: people take everything too seriously sometimes. People vest too much
- 9:49Speaker 1: into it. At the end of the day, it's entertainment
- 9:52Speaker 1: that I happen to love that, to your point, is
- 9:56Speaker 1: art because of what it sets out to do. It
- 10:00Speaker 1: is trying to do and say something important, like you said,
- 10:04Speaker 1: to the world. But at the same time, it's okay
- 10:07Speaker 1: to come in and have fun with it. Like in
- 10:09Speaker 1: one of our text threads, when I saw the Ahsoka
- 10:12Speaker 1: Season 2 trailer... Why did I declare it has an
- 10:15Speaker 1: immediate and irrevocable five stars? I finally get to see
- 10:19Speaker 1: B-Wings in live action tearing up Star Destroyer. You know,
- 10:22Speaker 1: five stars. That is the best thing I've ever seen
- 10:26Speaker 1: in my life because I've waited, you know, like I'm like,
- 10:28Speaker 1: I see that moment and I'm like, Rudy, and I'm like,
- 10:31Speaker 1: I've been waiting my whole life for this.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Yep, 100%.
- 10:33Speaker 1: This is the moment ever since I saw the B-Wing
- 10:36Speaker 1: and I saw the Star Destroyer blowing up in that
- 10:38Speaker 1: still photo. And like, I watched the movie and I'm like,
- 10:41Speaker 1: why didn't I get that, man? Why didn't I get
- 10:43Speaker 1: the Star Destroyer? And now it's like, you know what?
- 10:45Speaker 1: I'm going to give you a little something here. You're
- 10:48Speaker 1: going to see the B-Wing do that. I'm like, yay.
- 10:51Speaker 1: I finally get to see it. But that's all in fun.
- 10:56Speaker 1: It doesn't mean that I actually think I'm immediately going
- 10:59Speaker 1: to give it five stars. To borrow a line from
- 11:03Speaker 1: a dear old friend of mine, the immortal Craigula, do
- 11:07Speaker 1: you remember fun? And like that, that's what brings me
- 11:10Speaker 1: back is we have fun with this. And it's like,
- 11:13Speaker 1: I just, I always feel like, again, it's a leading
- 11:16Speaker 1: by example thing. It's okay. You can have fun with it, guys.
- 11:19Speaker 1: It's totally fine. It's totally fine not to take it
- 11:22Speaker 1: too seriously.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Well, and I think a part of this too is-
- 11:26Speaker 2: You know, one of the things that we've seen throughout
- 11:29Speaker 2: everything is that everything has been politicized. And I'm not
- 11:34Speaker 2: taking away the fact that, you know, Lucas was saying
- 11:38Speaker 2: things politically, of course, throughout the original trilogy and the prequels, right?
- 11:43Speaker 1: That's not what I'm saying.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Although I think that what he was saying was so
- 11:47Speaker 2: much more relevant to every single society and all time
- 11:52Speaker 2: because it's a moral discussion based off a historical story.
- 12:00Speaker 2: And when I say that, I mean like the human
- 12:02Speaker 2: condition story. Which is to descend into tyranny and because
- 12:10Speaker 2: of the– again, the very base thing about Star Wars
- 12:13Speaker 2: is selflessness and selfishness. And so– but I think everything
- 12:19Speaker 2: became so politicized and I think it's one of the
- 12:22Speaker 2: other things that I so appreciate about the discussions that
- 12:25Speaker 2: we end up having. It's like, I don't care about
- 12:30Speaker 2: what your perceived political thought process is about what this is.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I'm judging it as a Star Wars story. I'm judging
- 12:38Speaker 2: it whether or not I feel like it fits within
- 12:40Speaker 2: the Star Wars universe. Is it good Star Wars? I
- 12:44Speaker 2: don't care about the rest of the stuff because that's
- 12:47Speaker 2: not important to whether or not this is something that
- 12:52Speaker 2: adds or subtracts from this overall saga. And I think
- 12:57Speaker 2: that's something that so many fans just got so caught
- 13:01Speaker 2: up in. And I find that sad because we actually
- 13:05Speaker 2: need a world where everything isn't political, where stories can
- 13:11Speaker 2: bring people together who are on different sides of the
- 13:15Speaker 2: aisle on different issues. That's one of the– like This
- 13:20Speaker 2: is a weird example, but I've been going to the
- 13:22Speaker 2: movies at least once a week to see a new
- 13:24Speaker 2: movie this year. And my goal is to see at
- 13:28Speaker 2: least one new movie a week. And one of the
- 13:30Speaker 2: fun things about that has been the just communal experience
- 13:34Speaker 2: of watching a film with people because it changes things, right?
- 13:38Speaker 2: When people react best. big at a theater because something
- 13:42Speaker 2: exciting or just that blew their minds happens and somebody
- 13:46Speaker 2: yells out in the theater, oh my gosh, like, and
- 13:49Speaker 2: everybody in the theater laughs. There's that moment of connectivity
- 13:53Speaker 2: between us all. I don't know any of these people,
- 13:57Speaker 2: but we've just shared something together, right? And that communal
- 14:02Speaker 2: experience matters. And I think We've just become so fragmented
- 14:08Speaker 2: in every way, and it's because everything has become, quote unquote,
- 14:12Speaker 2: political that we've just lost the ability to talk about,
- 14:16Speaker 2: is this good Star Wars or not?
- 14:18Speaker 1: I agree. And again, not to try to take it
- 14:22Speaker 1: out to the larger world. I think that that's the
- 14:24Speaker 1: thing where it's happening not just within– one fan base.
- 14:30Speaker 1: I think that everybody has jumped on this idea in
- 14:33Speaker 1: specific that everything has to speak to a specific thing
- 14:40Speaker 1: in a specific time and cater to my particular temporal
- 14:46Speaker 1: beliefs in certain things. Whereas you could wind up changing
- 14:53Speaker 1: somebody's mind about something by presenting a compelling story And
- 14:58Speaker 1: making them think and then saying, you know, it's funny
- 15:02Speaker 1: how that's like the thing, right? And that can get
- 15:06Speaker 1: the change to happen. And, you know, winning the mind
- 15:10Speaker 1: of somebody is done that way. If you yell at somebody,
- 15:13Speaker 1: they're going to dig their heels in and they're going to,
- 15:16Speaker 1: it's time for a fight. But if you talk to
- 15:18Speaker 1: somebody and you sort of like be like, hey, you know,
- 15:20Speaker 1: it's like that thing, you know, over in Star Wars
- 15:23Speaker 1: where they had that thing where the Bad Batch encountered
- 15:26Speaker 1: Asajj Ventress and, you know, They kind of thought of
- 15:29Speaker 1: her as a bad person, but by the time you
- 15:31Speaker 1: see her there, it's like there's a little more to her.
- 15:33Speaker 1: There's something strange going on, and she seems like she's
- 15:38Speaker 1: putting herself back together, and isn't it a good thing
- 15:40Speaker 1: that she got that chance? And somebody could be like,
- 15:42Speaker 1: oh yeah, you're right, it is important to give people chances,
- 15:46Speaker 1: to give them the opportunity to change their ways. You know,
- 15:48Speaker 1: like Asajj Ventress was a legit villain, and we see
- 15:53Speaker 1: her redeemed over time very incrementally, and Again, just like
- 16:00Speaker 1: Anakin himself, just like so many other people in Star Wars,
- 16:03Speaker 1: redeemed by love. And that's the growing and going theme
- 16:09Speaker 1: and the going concern. And the problem with rooting things
- 16:12Speaker 1: to specific moments in time and political movements within time
- 16:18Speaker 1: is if you go back to all of the stuff
- 16:19Speaker 1: that Lucas said in the notes that we've seen and
- 16:22Speaker 1: the making of books and all of that type of stuff,
- 16:26Speaker 1: Palpatine was Richard Nixon to Lucas. Nixon was his inspiration
- 16:32Speaker 1: point for Palpatine. But at no point when I was
- 16:36Speaker 1: a little kid did I see the Emperor as Richard Nixon,
- 16:40Speaker 1: nor did anybody see him as Richard Nixon in the prequels.
- 16:44Speaker 1: So if Lucas had made it so that Palpatine on
- 16:48Speaker 1: screen put up two fingers and went, I am not
- 16:51Speaker 1: a crook, that diminishes it. And to your point, it's
- 16:56Speaker 1: more universal than that. And that's the way that you're
- 16:59Speaker 1: going to speak to everybody and get us all to
- 17:03Speaker 1: where we want to be, which is a place of agreement,
- 17:07Speaker 1: getting people, people at a baseline want to get along,
- 17:10Speaker 1: you know, most people do at least. And so it's like,
- 17:12Speaker 1: you know, I don't know. I mean, I mean, think about,
- 17:16Speaker 1: think about this. Let me answer your question. Let me
- 17:19Speaker 1: come back and answer your question this way. The reason
- 17:21Speaker 1: to keep having conversations like this is you asking this
- 17:25Speaker 1: question You're my dear friend, and I'm sitting there, and
- 17:28Speaker 1: I'm like, I wouldn't really have thought of this particular
- 17:32Speaker 1: thing this way. I love having these types of conversations,
- 17:37Speaker 1: and that's why I keep coming back.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's interesting because, in all honesty, maybe
- 17:44Speaker 2: it's just helpful that we were never the number one
- 17:47Speaker 2: podcast in any kind of– Pressure was put on us.
- 17:54Speaker 2: We've just always been in this for love of the game,
- 17:57Speaker 2: love of Star Wars, right? It's not about being super
- 18:01Speaker 2: popular or whatever. It's just two guys sharing their opinions
- 18:03Speaker 2: on Star Wars and their friendship with people. I mean,
- 18:07Speaker 2: if you listen to 450 some odd episodes of us,
- 18:11Speaker 2: truly that's what it is.
- 18:12Speaker 1: We're sharing.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Lives together and our love of Star Wars. And we
- 18:17Speaker 2: truly are really good friends brought together by this saga,
- 18:21Speaker 2: but we have stayed for so much more. And the
- 18:25Speaker 2: joy of continuing to do this is that I just
- 18:29Speaker 2: love talking about Star Wars with my friend. We say
- 18:32Speaker 2: that every year at Thanksgiving, which is the national holiday
- 18:36Speaker 2: of aggressive negotiations.
- 18:38Speaker 1: It sure is.
- 18:39Speaker 2: But It's also, I think, the thing that, and I
- 18:44Speaker 2: love that you said this at the beginning, it's like
- 18:47Speaker 2: there is a sense of responsibility that I feel of saying, hey,
- 18:51Speaker 2: we can all love this thing even if we don't
- 18:55Speaker 2: all agree about everything else outside of Star Wars. But
- 19:00Speaker 2: we should be able to have great conversations about this
- 19:05Speaker 2: because it is just a story and it is just
- 19:09Speaker 2: meant to, like, partially entertain us. But at the same time,
- 19:15Speaker 2: George was very specific about wanting to entertain while at
- 19:19Speaker 2: the same time reinforcing, I think, the most positive aspects
- 19:24Speaker 2: of our world and the most important virtues that almost
- 19:28Speaker 2: every civilization has agreed on. That was his goal.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Obviously, he's driven.
- 19:35Speaker 2: By the ideas of Joseph Campbell and all of those
- 19:39Speaker 2: things seem to be things that most civilizations tend to share.
- 19:45Speaker 2: And so in a small way, I think that's just
- 19:49Speaker 2: about us sharing those with you guys.
- 19:52Speaker 1: And let's qualify that. The successful civilizations tend to come
- 19:56Speaker 1: together around these ideas.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Yes.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Because there have been less successful civilizations that couldn't coalesce
- 20:01Speaker 1: around these ideas. And inertia might keep you going for
- 20:04Speaker 1: a little while, but let's be honest, eventually you're going
- 20:07Speaker 1: to run out of gas. For these sorts of things.
- 20:09Speaker 1: This is true. But also, you know, also, you know,
- 20:12Speaker 1: you know, underlaid. And, you know, one of the things
- 20:15Speaker 1: that I'll even give Andor, which, you know, I'm not
- 20:19Speaker 1: the world's biggest fan of that series, but like. I mean,
- 20:22Speaker 1: nobody's perfect. There's, however I am, it's strange. But like
- 20:27Speaker 1: one of those things is that they also talk about
- 20:30Speaker 1: how things get to that, things get to that stage
- 20:35Speaker 1: of being so decadent. that people lose the ability to
- 20:40Speaker 1: see the things falling apart around them. They can't see
- 20:45Speaker 1: the decay anymore. Things on Coruscant are so good, just
- 20:49Speaker 1: like things were so good in Rome or in London
- 20:52Speaker 1: at the height of the British Empire, the Ottomans, any
- 20:55Speaker 1: other empire throughout history. Tsarist Russia, they lose sight of
- 21:01Speaker 1: the fact that there's suffering around them And that's what
- 21:06Speaker 1: causes it– the people at the top don't see the
- 21:10Speaker 1: rot at the bottom. And that's what causes the whole
- 21:12Speaker 1: structure to fall and collapse in on itself. And I
- 21:16Speaker 1: think that that's something that I would be dying for
- 21:20Speaker 1: a series to really explore in Star Wars would be
- 21:26Speaker 1: the real difficulties of trying to put the Republic together
- 21:31Speaker 1: from the ashes of the Empire. Because you're– how do
- 21:34Speaker 1: you balance– building something new while honoring the past without
- 21:40Speaker 1: becoming mired in what caused it to fail. And like,
- 21:45Speaker 1: even that's an interesting thing they could still pursue, but
- 21:50Speaker 1: haven't yet with Luke, right? Maybe Luke lost sight over
- 21:54Speaker 1: those 30 years and became enamored with the idea of
- 21:58Speaker 1: chasing the past instead of forging a new way forward.
- 22:03Speaker 1: if they come out with something like that, that could
- 22:05Speaker 1: even rehabilitate some of the problems I have with the
- 22:08Speaker 1: sequel trilogy, because I can at least see the way
- 22:11Speaker 1: he got there because it's, it was just so jarring
- 22:14Speaker 1: and those sorts of things. But like, again, like you
- 22:17Speaker 1: were saying, like there's always, there's always the opportunity with this,
- 22:23Speaker 1: this franchise, with this series to bring it back to
- 22:28Speaker 1: its core. And I think that you and I, I
- 22:33Speaker 1: love these discussions and I know that the people who are,
- 22:37Speaker 1: who are listening, love these discussions because there are, you
- 22:43Speaker 1: know what? Again, I'm going to dip into the Star
- 22:45Speaker 1: Trek franchise. You and me, you know who we're like,
- 22:49Speaker 1: like Cybok, more of us out there. We're, we are,
- 22:52Speaker 1: we have assembled the Cyboks army of Star Wars fandom.
- 22:55Speaker 1: And once again, I brought it back to Star Trek five. Booyah.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Suck it. Yes, I did it.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Well, you know, uh, Sometimes I need my pain and
- 23:04Speaker 2: that's why I talk to you. That's fair.
- 23:09Speaker 1: That's a valid point. I'd say you have plenty of
- 23:11Speaker 1: hours of evidence of that one. Yeah, that's true.
- 23:13Speaker 2: But look, I think.
- 23:17Speaker 1: This is the thing.
- 23:19Speaker 2: And I continually come back and I continue to do
- 23:24Speaker 2: this because I love Star Wars. And the beauty was,
- 23:28Speaker 2: for me, I wasn't going to let any outside force
- 23:33Speaker 2: take that thing away from me, right? And I'm thankful
- 23:38Speaker 2: that through the good, the bad, and the ugly of
- 23:42Speaker 2: all the stuff that's come out since Disney bought Lucasfilm,
- 23:48Speaker 2: you're not going to take away the fact that I
- 23:49Speaker 2: love Star Wars, right? I'll always have the things I love,
- 23:55Speaker 2: whether you keep adding things that I don't. And the
- 23:58Speaker 2: beauty is.
- 23:59Speaker 1: That it's been a mixed bag.
- 24:01Speaker 2: But there's been some stuff that's come out that I
- 24:03Speaker 2: hold up there with the highest regard for any Star
- 24:06Speaker 2: Wars ever. And we wouldn't have got if Disney hadn't
- 24:10Speaker 2: bought Star Wars maybe. And so like I'm just thankful
- 24:14Speaker 2: for when we get good Star Wars and I love
- 24:17Speaker 2: getting to celebrate that with you and with all the
- 24:21Speaker 2: people that do listen. And so, yeah, I mean, honestly,
- 24:26Speaker 2: I just keep doing this because I still love this thing.
- 24:30Speaker 2: And I still love my friend, and I love all
- 24:32Speaker 2: the people who listen and talk to us about the
- 24:35Speaker 2: things they like about this. And I just hope that
- 24:39Speaker 2: this will spur on people wanting to do that more
- 24:41Speaker 2: with us because if there's anything– years ago, we had
- 24:47Speaker 2: this thing going on in the show where we talk
- 24:49Speaker 2: about the Star Wars love. Hashtag Star Wars love.
- 24:52Speaker 1: That's right. And I think there's.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Just something that– we need more of that, right? And
- 24:59Speaker 2: celebrate the things you love and let go of the
- 25:02Speaker 2: things you hate. And isn't that what being a good
- 25:07Speaker 2: Jedi in the end is all about?
- 25:10Speaker 1: Amen and hallelujah. Put a little Star Wars love in
- 25:12Speaker 1: your heart to borrow from Al Green. Love it, love it,
- 25:16Speaker 1: love it. And you know what else I love to
- 25:18Speaker 1: do is I love to reach out to you online
- 25:20Speaker 1: and harass you. Even though I talk to you on
- 25:22Speaker 1: this podcast and I send text messages to you every day,
- 25:25Speaker 1: I still love to harass you online. So Matt, where
- 25:28Speaker 1: can people find you out there on the wilds of
- 25:30Speaker 1: the internet?
- 25:31Speaker 2: Would absolutely love to talk to people all over social media.
- 25:35Speaker 2: My name is MattRushing02. So if I'm on that platform,
- 25:38Speaker 2: find me there. Love to talk to you. You can
- 25:41Speaker 2: also find me, of course, here on the network with Outposts.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Talked about every single chapter of the Harry Potter series.
- 25:46Speaker 2: And over on the TFM Network, got a few shows,
- 25:49Speaker 2: got a bunch of great Star Trek talk with my
- 25:50Speaker 2: good friend Chris Jones. And in the 602 Club, talking
- 25:54Speaker 2: about all of the franchises we love outside of Star Trek.
- 25:58Speaker 2: But John, if people wanted to catch up with you,
- 26:02Speaker 2: maybe just talk about some of the things that they
- 26:04Speaker 2: absolutely love in this saga. Where could people find you?
- 26:07Speaker 1: Well, gosh, you can find me out there as Kessel
- 26:09Speaker 1: Junkie in the wilds of the internet. You can also
- 26:10Speaker 1: find me over on KesselJunkie.com where I actually kind of
- 26:14Speaker 1: quasi maintain a blog sometimes. And you can find me
- 26:17Speaker 1: out there on Goodreads and on Letterboxd because you can
- 26:21Speaker 1: only talk about books and you can only talk about movies.
- 26:24Speaker 1: And I love to do both of those things. And
- 26:26Speaker 1: of course, speaking of movies, you can hear me co-hosting
- 26:29Speaker 1: a show called House Lights with Darren Moser and Tristan Riddell.
- 26:33Speaker 1: And that's right here on this network. And we have
- 26:36Speaker 1: a great time talking about things where it's different movies
- 26:38Speaker 1: from different directors and how their interpretations of things differ.
- 26:43Speaker 1: And it's fun. It's a lot of fun. But I'll
- 26:46Speaker 1: tell you what else is a lot of fun is
- 26:48Speaker 1: finally getting out of hyperspace, which I think we're finally
- 26:51Speaker 1: about to do. So Master Rushing, I think it's time
- 26:54Speaker 1: to close these negotiations.
- 26:56Speaker 2: John, negotiations are closed.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Join the revolution. Join the nerd party.
