• 1:29
Speaker 4: Now today's show, I have a unique opportunity to speak
• 1:34
Speaker 4: to a former Viking teammate, and I have to say
• 1:38
  Speaker 4: he's a friend as well, but he's also a twenty
• 1:42
Speaker 4: twenty four NFL Hall of Fame nominee. Henry Thomas Hank
• 1:47
Speaker 4: as I know him, was drafted in the third round
• 1:50
Speaker 4: from LSU in nineteen eighty seven, and he made an
• 1:54
Speaker 4: immediate impact with the Vikings as nose tackle in his
• 1:58
Speaker 4: rookie season. He played with the Vikings from nineteen eighty
• 2:01
Speaker 4: seven to nineteen ninety four, then he would go on
• 2:04
Speaker 4: to play with the Lions from ninety five to ninety six.
• 2:07
Speaker 4: He finished his career with the New England Patriots from
• 2:11
Speaker 4: nineteen ninety seven to two thousand, after fourteen with after
• 2:14
Speaker 4: a fourteen year career, okay, fourteen year career in the NFL,
• 2:19
Speaker 4: he finished his career with ninety three and a half
• 2:22
Speaker 4: socks and over a thousand tackles. I'm gonna that's gonna
• 2:26
Speaker 4: be questionable. I'm gonna ask a little bit about that
• 2:28
Speaker 4: when I get him on their so let me bring
• 2:32
Speaker 4: in right now Henry Thomas, and you'll hear me call
• 2:36
Speaker 4: him Hank from here on out, probably because I can't
• 2:39
Speaker 4: help it, Hank, happy to have you on the show, man,
• 2:42
  Speaker 4: what's going on?
• 2:44
Speaker 5: Hey, I'm happy to be on the show. That was.
• 2:46
Speaker 5: That was a pretty good introduction. Many Well, you know what,
• 2:52
Speaker 5: you left some stuff out started for fourteen years. You know,
• 2:57
Speaker 5: I was a starter for all fourteen years playing career.
• 3:01
Speaker 5: Uh yeah, it was at least a couple of years
• 3:03
Speaker 5: in row, I had over hundred castles.
• 3:06
Speaker 2: I mean, I'm surprised, ladies, ladies and gentlemen.
• 3:12
Speaker 4: Again, just so I can take you back, we Hank
• 3:17
Speaker 4: and I played in Minnesota together. We also, believe it
• 3:20
Speaker 4: or not, we we had our We had a show
• 3:23
Speaker 4: there that we were doing every week. I don't know
• 3:27
Speaker 4: how long we did that show, Hank, but but we
• 3:31
Speaker 4: have a unique relationship which is basically bringing each other
• 3:36
Speaker 4: down or trying not to give them their their proper due.
• 3:39
Speaker 4: But because he's going to be on the show and
• 3:42
Speaker 4: a lot of people here in West Virginia, I want
• 3:44
Speaker 4: to make sure that I give him his props. But
• 3:46
Speaker 4: one of the things you won't have to worry about,
• 3:48
Speaker 4: he will not shy away from giving himself his props.
• 3:51
Speaker 4: So all right, so Hank, here's here's here's one of
• 3:54
Speaker 4: my first questions. And I want to touch I want
• 3:58
Speaker 4: to touch on the Hall of Fame, the emotions of
• 4:03
Speaker 4: the Hall of Fame when you heard, when you first
• 4:06
  Speaker 4: heard about it.
• 4:08
Speaker 2: What what did that feel like for.
• 4:11
Speaker 4: The for the public who ends up hearing about the
• 4:14
Speaker 4: person who's in or may not know all the people
• 4:17
Speaker 4: who get nominated, what is that feeling like?
• 4:22
Speaker 5: Uh, well, you were there with me the first time
• 4:24
Speaker 5: up and I nominated. I've been nominated maybe three weeks
• 4:29
Speaker 5: before and had no idea until someone what We're at
• 4:33
Speaker 5: a uh an appearance together and someone was saying, you know,
• 4:36
Speaker 5: Hall of Fame, Hall of Fame, and I was like, okay, cool,
• 4:39
Speaker 5: yeah one day soon. And then when he actually introduced
• 4:42
Speaker 5: me as a Hall of Fame nominee, I was like,
• 4:46
Speaker 5: come on, bird, you're taking the jagon real far here
• 4:49
Speaker 5: and no, and he put the phone now and showed me.
• 4:52
Speaker 5: And that's when I had to turn to you and said, look, man,
• 4:54
Speaker 5: I can't hang with you no mo.
• 5:00
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 5:00
Speaker 4: I think that was the day that our friendship kind
• 5:02
Speaker 4: of we had a little bit of a divide in
• 5:04
  Speaker 4: our friendship because I was I wasn't a Hall of
• 5:07
Speaker 4: Famer and you were a nominee, So that separated us
• 5:10
  Speaker 4: a little bit.
• 5:13
Speaker 5: Was the feeling for it was it was outstanding and
• 5:16
Speaker 5: to see it and then to actually look at the
• 5:20
Speaker 5: list of defensive but I was going against rationally knew
• 5:24
Speaker 5: that maybe the next nominee I might have gonna shot,
• 5:28
Speaker 5: but it was it was still as honor and just
• 5:32
Speaker 5: really really excited to be even you know, I'm in
• 5:36
Speaker 5: the game. I'm in the game so that my name
• 5:38
Speaker 5: is in those the in the thralls of being possibly
• 5:44
Speaker 5: considered as a Hall of Famer, and you.
• 5:47
  Speaker 4: Know, and again i'm I'm I'm on a serious note,
• 5:51
Speaker 4: I'm obviously I could be very biased because I played
• 5:55
Speaker 4: behind Hank and and we had a relationship the deal line,
• 6:00
Speaker 4: which was a great one. Chris Dowman was on that
• 6:03
Speaker 4: D line, Keith Mallard was on that D line, Al Noga,
• 6:07
Speaker 4: a whole host of other people. At one point, I
• 6:09
Speaker 4: think Johnny Randall joined that group. And so it was
• 6:15
Speaker 4: it was it was clear to me how good our
• 6:19
Speaker 4: D line was. It was clear to me because at
• 6:22
Speaker 4: the end of the day, while a lot of names
• 6:24
Speaker 4: were being thrown out. Back in those days, Hank was
• 6:29
Speaker 4: the guy who was kind of doing the lining up,
• 6:31
Speaker 4: getting everybody lined up, making the calls and to and
• 6:36
Speaker 4: and what happens is you don't see that. People don't
• 6:39
Speaker 4: know that. And to me, when you when you told
• 6:43
Speaker 4: me that you had been nominated, you know, I was,
• 6:46
Speaker 4: I was proud, you know, like I was like thinking
• 6:48
Speaker 4: to myself, you know, because I know I'm not going
• 6:52
  Speaker 4: I know I'm not gonna get nominated. It's just it's
• 6:54
Speaker 4: just not in in in my in my space. But
• 6:59
Speaker 4: I really did. I was as excited as you were.
• 7:03
Speaker 4: And I and I really felt like this was this
• 7:06
Speaker 4: was for sure deserving. And again I'm hoping that it
• 7:10
Speaker 4: is going to come to pass. But you're making a
• 7:13
Speaker 4: case for some of the some of the names, and
• 7:15
Speaker 4: I want you to get some of those names that
• 7:16
Speaker 4: are on there because I'm going to make the I'm
• 7:19
Speaker 4: going to challenge those names and say, hmmm, I don't
• 7:22
Speaker 4: know if they were better than you.
• 7:24
Speaker 5: Well, I mean there were there were names on that
• 7:26
Speaker 5: like the Julius Pepper's, the scene, the you know, those
• 7:31
Speaker 5: guys in their old life did something special for me.
• 7:35
Speaker 5: I'll give you white Pean. You know, d White Seenie.
• 7:38
Speaker 5: I had to privily just coaching him a little bit
• 7:41
Speaker 5: when I was did some internship with Tony Gungeye and
• 7:45
Speaker 5: John Chierley in uh Indianapolis, that kind of thing. Uh,
• 7:51
Speaker 5: those guys were, like I said, it was, it was
• 7:54
Speaker 5: just amazing to see that I was in that company.
• 7:57
Speaker 5: Even though those guys are hey, yonger than I am.
• 8:00
Speaker 5: It was still, uh, it was an honor. It's still
• 8:04
Speaker 5: it still is an honor because you know, I think
• 8:06
Speaker 5: I'm gonna get some search made with that Hall of.
• 8:09
Speaker 4: Fame, because because everybody might not know, and you want
• 8:15
Speaker 4: to make sure that everybody knows.
• 8:18
Speaker 5: No, not nothing across the sleeve. You know right there,
• 8:23
Speaker 5: you were stupid man.
• 8:25
Speaker 4: Well, okay, so let's I want to switch a little
• 8:28
Speaker 4: bit and ask you today's game from from from your view,
• 8:36
Speaker 4: because I've talked to a lot of former players just
• 8:39
Speaker 4: you know, either back in Minnesota or you know, some
• 8:41
Speaker 4: of the trips that we take to Wisconsin or North Dakota.
• 8:46
Speaker 4: You know, I feel like everybody's in the consame consensus
• 8:51
Speaker 4: of the game is different.
• 8:52
Speaker 2: It doesn't really look the same.
• 8:57
Speaker 4: I think our game during the time that we were
• 8:59
Speaker 4: playing in and I'm curious of what you think it
• 9:02
Speaker 4: was a it was and maybe maybe this is not.
• 9:06
Speaker 4: It doesn't justify it. But I know that safety has
• 9:10
Speaker 4: become an issue. But I think back in our day
• 9:13
Speaker 4: when I don't know, safety was the key component. I think,
• 9:16
Speaker 4: you know, the physicality was the was the key thing.
• 9:21
Speaker 4: When you look at the game, you see new linemen,
• 9:26
Speaker 4: you know, you see the kind of the handcuffs that
• 9:28
Speaker 4: are put on them by hitting the quarterback. What do
• 9:30
Speaker 4: you think when you look at that?
• 9:33
Speaker 5: Well, when I look at the game now, it's it's
• 9:36
Speaker 5: an evolution the game. Everything, nothing is ever gonna stay,
• 9:40
Speaker 5: it's the same, It's gonna be an evolution. Is Like
• 9:43
Speaker 5: you said, the physical part of our game was the
• 9:47
Speaker 5: focal focal point for when we played the game. But
• 9:51
Speaker 5: because of that, the way we played the game and
• 9:55
Speaker 5: the way we enjoyed the game, we lost or we
• 9:59
Speaker 5: saw other people in our era that possibly didn't come
• 10:04
Speaker 5: out as well as you and I did, you know,
• 10:07
Speaker 5: because of the physicalness of it. So they had to
• 10:10
Speaker 5: make some adjustments and some changes to the game. But
• 10:17
Speaker 5: when you get into the actual plan of the game
• 10:20
Speaker 5: with things that are different on you know, if we
• 10:25
Speaker 5: played a game and we had seventy five snaps as
• 10:29
Speaker 5: a defensive unit. It was for certain, unless I was hurt,
• 10:33
Speaker 5: I took seventy snaps. There was not a rotation or
• 10:40
Speaker 5: our group was that that was so conscious of how
• 10:44
Speaker 5: many players, what are they doing? And I think it's
• 10:47
Speaker 5: because of some of the the deterioration of players before
• 10:54
Speaker 5: them that they tried to eliminate that for future players.
• 10:59
Speaker 5: But the way of the game has changed as far
• 11:01
Speaker 5: as taking some of the physical you know, the way
• 11:05
Speaker 5: they handcoff me from you know, bumping a quarterback or
• 11:10
Speaker 5: giving them a little job, that's the one. You know,
• 11:12
Speaker 5: that's something to do with guaranting the just for those quarterbacks.
• 11:17
Speaker 5: You know they were had that you know stiver smooth
• 11:21
Speaker 5: that you know they have that mantle that they're all
• 11:24
Speaker 5: knock them down a bit, but not in a malicious way,
• 11:27
Speaker 5: but feel fun. But the game has changed, and being older,
• 11:33
Speaker 5: I can look at it and see, well where and
• 11:37
Speaker 5: what the attempt is to make something that is so
• 11:43
Speaker 5: violent safe as well. It's like trying to make the
• 11:48
Speaker 5: Gladiator game safe, you know sport, and you can't. You
• 11:54
Speaker 5: can't try to. You can critique it a turb it
• 11:58
Speaker 5: a little, but you can't cut it out and then
• 12:01
Speaker 5: you lose the whole premise of the game.
• 12:05
Speaker 4: And see and I kind of I kind of feel
• 12:07
Speaker 4: like we're at the I feel like we're really close
• 12:11
Speaker 4: to doing that because I don't know, because to me
• 12:19
Speaker 4: that when I look at when I look at the
• 12:20
Speaker 4: secondary and I watch guys play and I and just
• 12:25
Speaker 4: looking at them tackle, I mean, it's it looks horrible
• 12:29
  Speaker 4: to me.
• 12:30
  Speaker 5: You know.
• 12:30
Speaker 4: It's like like like when I look at the secondary
• 12:33
Speaker 4: and and and and I can't say everybody, but yeah,
• 12:37
Speaker 4: you know, I watched corners try to tackle and it's
• 12:39
Speaker 4: like they're not like they're trying to just not get hurt.
• 12:43
Speaker 2: A lot of times.
• 12:44
Speaker 5: That was in my opinion, even when I played, That's
• 12:48
Speaker 5: the way I thought about the corners eating house.
• 12:57
Speaker 4: I've got sure the quarters that you had were were
• 13:00
Speaker 4: that way. But you know, but what whatever, you know,
• 13:03
Speaker 4: call it as you will.
• 13:06
Speaker 2: So tell me, tell me. I want to. I want
• 13:09
  Speaker 2: to go back.
• 13:10
  Speaker 5: I want to.
• 13:10
Speaker 2: I want to come back.
• 13:11
Speaker 4: You coming into the league, there's Chris Dowman, who's who's
• 13:15
Speaker 4: passed away. There's Keith Millard there, Al Noga's there. You
• 13:20
Speaker 4: come in as a nose guard or nose tackle, I
• 13:24
Speaker 4: should say, And and we had some years with that group.
• 13:30
Speaker 5: Well, yeah, Al came in later after me. Yeah, when
• 13:33
Speaker 5: I when I came in with Doug Martin, Yeah, Doug Martin.
• 13:37
Speaker 4: A couple of other There was a couple of other
• 13:40
Speaker 4: guys there too that had that I think the breakers
• 13:42
Speaker 4: that brought, yes, the the creation of our defense to
• 13:50
Speaker 4: what to the eighty seven season, eighty six eighty seven season, Yeah,
• 13:56
Speaker 4: the d line was totally amazing and talented. Can you
• 14:05
Speaker 4: can you give can you give the audience a kind
• 14:08
Speaker 4: of a snapshot of what each one of the players,
• 14:12
Speaker 4: because each one, each one of our players were going
• 14:15
Speaker 4: forward trying to make have the most socks. You know,
• 14:19
Speaker 4: they were going to be one or two, one or three,
• 14:21
Speaker 4: they were going to be in those top three. Tell
• 14:24
Speaker 4: me how that how those players competed and how they
• 14:29
Speaker 4: competed against each other more so than anybody else in
• 14:33
Speaker 4: the league. Not to say there was another great pass rushers,
• 14:37
Speaker 4: but our guys were just amazing.
• 14:40
Speaker 5: Well, coming into the to the Vikings as a as
• 14:44
Speaker 5: a rookie, you know, I was fortunate enough to have
• 14:49
Speaker 5: played for a great technician teacher in Pete Jenkins when
• 14:55
Speaker 5: I was at LSU and not even knowing it, but
• 14:58
Speaker 5: absorbing so much from him. And when I got to
• 15:02
Speaker 5: the Minnesota Viking, there were there were some lapses that
• 15:08
Speaker 5: I was that I that I had become accustomed to doing,
• 15:13
Speaker 5: like Rell wise, what I needed to make me better
• 15:16
Speaker 5: for this week I learned from Coach Jenkin at LSU.
• 15:21
Speaker 5: When I brought it to Minnesota, and I didn't get it,
• 15:24
Speaker 5: I just went and got it on my own. We
• 15:26
Speaker 5: had a unique group where Chris Doman and keep my
• 15:34
Speaker 5: Lard and myself became fast friends because Keith was not
• 15:38
Speaker 5: I mean, Chris was not certain about putting his hand
• 15:43
Speaker 5: in the dirt. He was a stand up about the guy.
• 15:46
Speaker 5: And it was like, look, man, you got some speed,
• 15:48
Speaker 5: but your hip saint turned and you can't cover them.
• 15:51
Speaker 5: But somebody, Yeah, exactly. And I was telling him all
• 15:58
Speaker 5: the time from on, put your hand in the dirt.
• 16:01
Speaker 5: Let me see you how to have fun here. And
• 16:03
Speaker 5: Chris picked up from that with Krit, with Keith and myself,
• 16:08
Speaker 5: And like I said, I came from a you know,
• 16:13
Speaker 5: very technical how to play a game because but this
• 16:17
Speaker 5: is probably the only time you're gonna ever hear me
• 16:19
Speaker 5: say this, and I hope they're not recarding it. But
• 16:22
Speaker 5: I wasn't the greatest athletics people that were there. I
• 16:26
Speaker 5: have my quickness, my feet, I have some athleticism. But
• 16:30
Speaker 5: what in looking back at my game would make my
• 16:33
Speaker 5: game different and better than any other note tackle at
• 16:36
Speaker 5: that time was I was a technician. I mean hand placement,
• 16:41
Speaker 5: how to explode, how to read the block. Those are
• 16:44
Speaker 5: the things I studied. I wasn't the strongest factored guy
• 16:48
Speaker 5: out on the field. But you know, I watched film
• 16:52
Speaker 5: my studies like, oh, they're in that far eye formation
• 16:55
Speaker 5: and that type of doing emotion. I know they running
• 16:57
Speaker 5: the dive at me. Here we go, bring it on,
• 17:00
Speaker 5: Come on, I'm not but I know it permits. You
• 17:03
Speaker 5: know you're not gonna surprise me. That kind of that
• 17:07
Speaker 5: was my play and has a group. I brought that
• 17:10
Speaker 5: part in. Keith and and Chris had so much explosive
• 17:16
Speaker 5: talent off the ball, and Keith and Keith was so
• 17:20
Speaker 5: explosive in the three technique because I mean, at that point,
• 17:25
Speaker 5: whoever heard of six five six six three techniques?
• 17:29
  Speaker 2: Right right?
• 17:30
Speaker 5: But he was there getting off on the ball. And
• 17:33
Speaker 5: what made us great was I was learning about the NFL.
• 17:38
Speaker 5: All the sacks and all that. Keith was already a
• 17:40
Speaker 5: part of it. Godman was just learning the joy of
• 17:45
Speaker 5: actually being the defensive then as opposed an outside linebackers,
• 17:50
Speaker 5: and we just bonded over what I could bring, what
• 17:55
Speaker 5: they saw. And then when you're throwing deud Martin's veteran
• 18:00
Speaker 5: leadership on right, I mean, we just had a great group.
• 18:04
Speaker 5: And then when Doug Lee's and and Noble comes in
• 18:07
Speaker 5: and he's just hungry to be successful, it just made us.
• 18:11
Speaker 5: We competed in a group like the year. One year
• 18:17
Speaker 5: we had seventy something sacks and the defensive line had
• 18:22
Speaker 5: sixty of them, and we all we never competed like
• 18:28
Speaker 5: against one another. We've wanted more than that guy got
• 18:31
Speaker 5: as a group, but has a unit. We wanted to
• 18:34
Speaker 5: be the best. We wanted We always said we wanted
• 18:38
Speaker 5: to set the standard. When every ever, every other team
• 18:42
Speaker 5: in the NFL look at defensive linemen, we wanted to
• 18:45
Speaker 5: be the standard they were shooting them be so period.
• 18:49
Speaker 4: So when you go back, when you when you look
• 18:52
Speaker 4: at the Purple people leaders and and that and that legacy,
• 18:58
Speaker 4: where now do you do you feel like that group,
• 19:02
Speaker 4: your group, where do they sit.
• 19:05
Speaker 2: Where do you you know, because because I.
• 19:08
Speaker 4: Can most people now who don't, who are not old
• 19:12
Speaker 4: enough to know the people the Purple People leaders, all right,
• 19:16
Speaker 4: when they think about the Minnesota Vikings and they think
• 19:20
Speaker 4: about the defensive line, I to my to me, I'm
• 19:24
Speaker 4: thinking they're thinking that group right there.
• 19:28
Speaker 5: Well, when you think of the Purple People, we sit
• 19:30
Speaker 5: as as my group were, we sit very a very
• 19:35
Speaker 5: comfortable close second behind those because those guys revolutionize. Yes,
• 19:42
Speaker 5: they made it difference than anybody else the way they
• 19:46
Speaker 5: played the game, and back then everybody wanted to beat it.
• 19:53
Speaker 5: No one wanted to give the Purple People. The guys
• 19:56
Speaker 5: up front, they're just dudes. They always a attributed the
• 20:01
Speaker 5: success that they had because they were a customer playing
• 20:04
Speaker 5: in the cold weather. But they will kick your butt
• 20:07
Speaker 5: no better way you were cold or not.
• 20:10
Speaker 2: You know, it didn't make any difference.
• 20:13
Speaker 4: Okay, So you you you're putting our group your d
• 20:19
  Speaker 4: line second?
• 20:21
Speaker 2: Which which is which is fair?
• 20:25
Speaker 5: Yeah? Rankings, those guys, those guys inspired us to be
• 20:30
Speaker 5: what we were, and I believe we took what they
• 20:35
Speaker 5: did and took it to another level where every other
• 20:39
Speaker 5: team in the league wanted to play the way we played.
• 20:43
Speaker 5: But there were those that said, oh, they don't play
• 20:46
Speaker 5: with any discipline insight, Oh we're disciplined. We're disciplining kicking
• 20:51
Speaker 5: them crap out of your offen line.
• 20:54
Speaker 4: But but I think I think part of that, don't
• 20:57
Speaker 4: you think that comes with the scheme. I mean, we
• 20:59
Speaker 4: were saying, man the man, and you guys are just
• 21:01
Speaker 4: going it could it could have looked like, you know,
• 21:06
Speaker 4: playground ball, but everybody had a role, and everybody in
• 21:11
Speaker 4: that everybody in I mean we had like everybody that
• 21:15
Speaker 4: was in a spot was perfect for the spot.
• 21:18
Speaker 5: Well that's exactly right. When people look at us and said, oh,
• 21:24
Speaker 5: their defensive line is just running up the field there, Uh,
• 21:28
Speaker 5: they're only doing that because they got those guys in
• 21:31
Speaker 5: the back that can play man coverage. Uh, but you
• 21:36
Speaker 5: guys played man coverage because we could run up the
• 21:38
Speaker 5: field because we know how to get the pressure on
• 21:41
  Speaker 5: the guy.
• 21:41
Speaker 4: Right, and and and and and to to anybody who
• 21:45
Speaker 4: is a football coach, anybody who is a d lineman
• 21:50
Speaker 4: or defensive back or linebacker, hear what he's saying, because
• 21:54
Speaker 4: at the end of the day, the defense, there's no
• 21:59
  Speaker 4: I can't I can't get interceptions, I can't knock balls down.
• 22:03
  Speaker 2: I can't be a pro bowler.
• 22:05
Speaker 4: I can't be all of those kinds of things if
• 22:07
Speaker 4: I don't have some guys up front that can put pressure.
• 22:12
Speaker 2: And we and and and and Hank.
• 22:15
Speaker 4: I can remember a number of times you guys turning
• 22:17
Speaker 4: around saying, hey, just hold them just a little bit longer.
• 22:20
Speaker 2: We're almost there, you know.
• 22:22
Speaker 4: I remember those saying it a zillion times, keep saying
• 22:26
Speaker 4: it always so. And we were like, Okay, we're right,
• 22:29
  Speaker 4: we're trying, we're trying. And we didn't have a problem.
• 22:33
Speaker 4: We never had a problem of a distinction of the
• 22:37
Speaker 4: need that you had for that other position.
• 22:40
Speaker 5: Yeah, And I think that I.
• 22:42
Speaker 4: Think that's a critical piece of having a good defense
• 22:46
Speaker 4: is that you don't break up. You have to stay connected.
• 22:49
Speaker 4: You have to realize, as a dB, you need everybody
• 22:52
Speaker 4: that's in front of you to play well. If you're upfront,
• 22:56
Speaker 4: you need everybody in the background to play good. And
• 22:58
Speaker 4: if you can get that as a whole, that's a
• 23:01
Speaker 4: good football team. That's a good defensive football team.
• 23:05
Speaker 5: Well. The thing about it, too, that people don't get
• 23:08
Speaker 5: when they try to say that we were undisciplined, we
• 23:11
Speaker 5: were done this we're that you can't say it. You
• 23:15
Speaker 5: can say it and show examples of where they're undisciplined,
• 23:19
Speaker 5: but in each one of those years, you can't. The
• 23:24
Speaker 5: fact don't line up because this group was always one
• 23:29
Speaker 5: two in defense. They're the top in the top three
• 23:34
Speaker 5: tiers every year. Defense that's not undisciplined, that's that's playing excited,
• 23:42
Speaker 5: put together defensive football.
• 23:44
Speaker 2: How many? How many?
• 23:45
Speaker 4: How many people that we put in the Pro Bowl
• 23:47
  Speaker 4: in eighty seven?
• 23:49
Speaker 5: Oh my goodness, I mean it was a lot and
• 23:55
Speaker 5: a lot because I was I remember that was my
• 23:57
Speaker 5: rookie year, and I was like, there's none of the
• 24:00
Speaker 5: guys that are in there at the at the topic
• 24:03
Speaker 5: you can you have numbers better than me. What what
• 24:06
  Speaker 5: what's happening?
• 24:07
  Speaker 2: Right right?
• 24:09
Speaker 5: We put eighty seven and eighty eight, eighty nine, We
• 24:11
Speaker 5: put a ton of people in the Pro.
• 24:13
Speaker 2: Bowls and and and again, part of that to me.
• 24:22
Speaker 4: Is coaches, you know, coaches knowing what your guys can do.
• 24:27
Speaker 4: I mean, you had Floyd Peters, I had Pete Carroll.
• 24:32
Speaker 4: And everybody may not know Floyd Peters, but and you
• 24:36
Speaker 4: can and you can, and you can talk about him
• 24:38
Speaker 4: because because he deserves his due. But in the secondary,
• 24:42
Speaker 4: you know, learning how to play man to man. I'm
• 24:44
Speaker 4: learning that from now what we know the best probably
• 24:49
Speaker 4: the best defense about.
• 24:50
Speaker 2: Coach in history exactly.
• 24:53
Speaker 4: Okay, So as good as I thought I was, I
• 24:57
Speaker 4: learned it from a coach that tied it to so
• 25:01
Speaker 4: many other I don't think he ever tied it to
• 25:04
Speaker 4: anybody who did not have success.
• 25:07
Speaker 2: So you got to kind of blame that on the coach.
• 25:10
Speaker 5: You gotta bless him everywhere he went, everywhere he.
• 25:14
Speaker 4: Went, Yes, and and and and so again a lot
• 25:18
Speaker 4: of people don't know the name Floyd Peters, but give
• 25:22
Speaker 4: give them a description of how you how if you
• 25:26
Speaker 4: were going to introduce him, how would you introduce him?
• 25:29
Speaker 2: Because Floyd was a different kind of character.
• 25:32
Speaker 4: I don't know if parents like he could never be
• 25:34
Speaker 4: a high school coach, and maybe not even a college coach.
• 25:38
Speaker 2: Because you do something wrong, you're gonna hear.
• 25:44
Speaker 5: He's gonna let you know. And the thing about when
• 25:47
Speaker 5: we played for Floyd, Floyd had a a very good
• 25:52
Speaker 5: understanding of what he wanted to see out of his defense,
• 25:57
Speaker 5: how his defense was supposed to look, and what was
• 26:00
Speaker 5: you know, Because I honestly believed that I got the
• 26:05
Speaker 5: starting job two weeks into the training camp because they
• 26:09
Speaker 5: had no intentions of making me the starter. But if
• 26:13
Speaker 5: you remember that rookie year, Tim Newton came in a
• 26:21
Speaker 5: little bit, he came in a little heavy that year,
• 26:26
Speaker 5: and to give him a little slap on the wrist,
• 26:30
Speaker 5: throw that rookie in there. Well, that rookie could play and.
• 26:37
Speaker 2: And and hold up.
• 26:38
Speaker 4: Let me let me clarify that to the folks, like
• 26:41
Speaker 4: Tim Newton was a great player. Yeah, but there was
• 26:45
Speaker 4: an expectation of weight and you needed to come back in,
• 26:51
Speaker 4: you needed to come in at a certain weight. They
• 26:53
Speaker 4: had to wait for him to come in at and
• 26:57
Speaker 4: he did not come in at the proper weight, And
• 27:01
Speaker 4: all of a sudden, what happens is they're like, okay,
• 27:03
  Speaker 4: we're gonna go.
• 27:04
Speaker 2: We'll go with the rookie.
• 27:07
Speaker 5: So they put me in to give him a little
• 27:09
Speaker 5: slap on the wrist to say, hey, you need to
• 27:11
Speaker 5: will play this rookie. But it was the second day
• 27:15
Speaker 5: of me being the starter because they had no intentions
• 27:19
Speaker 5: of me being the snart. They just wanted to get
• 27:21
Speaker 5: him motivated. But I'll never forget. We had a blitz
• 27:26
Speaker 5: call the tight end. Steve Jordan gets up whitchy side
• 27:33
Speaker 5: the strict team, and I'm over there biting my lip
• 27:36
Speaker 5: till it bleeds because I know I'm already study. We
• 27:40
Speaker 5: got an Omaha out of this blitz, and the veteran
• 27:46
Speaker 5: linebacker Studwell is not saying it, and I yell out Omaha,
• 27:51
Speaker 5: Omaha and Studwell and I get into it because I'm
• 27:56
Speaker 5: not supposed to be making no calls. And Floyd comes
• 28:00
  Speaker 5: and you're a rookie and I'm a rookie and come
• 28:04
Speaker 5: in and says Son, he's right, we gotta get out
• 28:07
Speaker 5: of there if we can't, you know. And I think
• 28:10
Speaker 5: that was the day I became a starter for real,
• 28:15
Speaker 5: for real, for real, because I knew I studied. It
• 28:20
Speaker 5: was my my My My role into Minnesota was let me,
• 28:27
Speaker 5: I'll take it back to my draft day. It's me.
• 28:32
Speaker 5: Two other guys had signed with the same agent. These
• 28:37
Speaker 5: two guys were both from A and M. I think
• 28:41
Speaker 5: it was Roger Vick and Johnny Holland, Yes, from Green Bay.
• 28:49
Speaker 5: We partied. We hung out together that whole week, just
• 28:56
Speaker 5: having a great time in Houston. Draft Day, Come first round,
• 29:03
Speaker 5: Jet picked Roger Vick, running back, phone rings, Oh clean,
• 29:10
Speaker 5: come on up. Press conference, blah blah blah blah, he's
• 29:13
Speaker 5: gone second round. Come around, phone rings, Johnie Holland, Green
• 29:20
Speaker 5: Bay Prince comperence, Come on up, we're gon having the
• 29:23
Speaker 5: blah blah blah, he's gone, third round. Comes on, it's
• 29:29
Speaker 5: shut the coverage cut off. I'm sitting around there by
• 29:34
Speaker 5: my fist now like I'm gonna go home. Then the
• 29:39
Speaker 5: phone rings, Minnesota vics you, Jashie blond Vihans. I get
• 29:46
Speaker 5: on the phone, man.
• 29:47
Speaker 2: Like who called you?
• 29:48
  Speaker 5: Who called you?
• 29:49
  Speaker 2: Who called you?
• 29:51
Speaker 5: Jerry Burns, Burnsy, Okay, Bernsy call and so I'm waiting
• 29:56
Speaker 5: for the come on French conference. Blah blah blahn at
• 30:00
Speaker 5: mini camp. So when I go to minicamp, this is
• 30:04
Speaker 5: how a here because I was I think that was
• 30:07
Speaker 5: the last and in the third round.
• 30:09
Speaker 2: Pick All right, hold that thought right there. We're going
• 30:12
Speaker 2: to take a quick break and we'll come right back. Okay,

Speaker 3: Now back through the conversation.
• 31:17
Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we're back from the break,
• 31:20
Speaker 4: and I have my buddy and former teammate, Henry Hank
• 31:24
Speaker 4: Thomas on the on the show today, and uh, Hank,
• 31:30
Speaker 4: pick up from where you left off right.
• 31:33
Speaker 5: A lot of problem. I came in, like I said,
• 31:36
  Speaker 5: I came in I was I think it was. I
• 31:38
Speaker 5: might've been the last player picked in the third round.
• 31:40
Speaker 5: But the coverage, it's first time they had coverage and
• 31:43
Speaker 5: nobody flew out to New York or nowhere wherever they
• 31:47
Speaker 5: were having they were that So the Jerry Burst call,
• 31:53
Speaker 5: they put me on a call with him. I'm like, oh,
• 31:55
  Speaker 5: I'm excited. I can't wait for me. And I'm thinking
• 31:59
Speaker 5: there's gonna be a accomplience like the other guys know,
• 32:02
Speaker 5: we'll see you at mini camp. So I was like, okay, great,
• 32:05
Speaker 5: I show up at mini camp. There's nobody there to
• 32:10
Speaker 5: pick me up at the airport. You know, I'm looking
• 32:13
Speaker 5: for guys. It's not hard to sell Henry Toomas. I'm
• 32:18
Speaker 5: looking for a guy with a car. There's Henry Tomas,
• 32:23
Speaker 5: and I'm looking all over for it and I don't
• 32:25
Speaker 5: see it. I'm looking for stuff to see, Miniesota biking.
• 32:29
Speaker 5: I see a lot of DAP with all the fans
• 32:33
Speaker 5: people walking around, but nothing that says you need to
• 32:37
Speaker 5: come with us. So I'm standing on the corner and
• 32:40
Speaker 5: I said, Caddy, that's right. There was no ubers back then.
• 32:44
Speaker 5: There's no cell phones back then. Don't judge me. People.
• 32:47
  Speaker 5: You're old.
• 32:49
  Speaker 2: You're old.
• 32:50
Speaker 5: I'm old. I remember when that was not cell phone
• 32:53
Speaker 5: so stop it and no internet anyway. So I walk
• 32:59
Speaker 5: up to the cab and anybody who knows me knows
• 33:03
Speaker 5: anything about me. I am probably the biggest Prince fan.
• 33:10
Speaker 5: And the cab I said, and all I knew about
• 33:14
Speaker 5: Minnesota was Prince. So the cabby said, where do you
• 33:19
Speaker 5: want to go? I said, well, how far is First Avenue?
• 33:24
Speaker 5: He says, just downtown. You can come on, I'll take you.
• 33:27
Speaker 5: He takes me to the first Avenue. The door is open,
• 33:31
Speaker 5: and let me explain to people First Avenue used to
• 33:34
Speaker 5: be a bus depot before it became a club, and
• 33:41
Speaker 5: that there was a door on the side that was
• 33:43
Speaker 5: open where the guy stopped and I kind of peeked
• 33:45
Speaker 5: in and somebody said, hey, what are you doing? And
• 33:48
Speaker 5: I was like, oh, I'm Minnesota Vikings and I was
• 33:52
Speaker 5: just peaking, you know, I'm fan of them. And he goes, well,
• 33:54
Speaker 5: co on in, let me say you round, show me around,
• 33:57
Speaker 5: tell me the things. Come back out the cabin still
• 33:59
Speaker 5: there looking at me, he was like, where do you
• 34:01
Speaker 5: want to go? I said, do you know where the
• 34:03
Speaker 5: Vikings practice? Because yeah, I went apart. I'll take me,
• 34:06
Speaker 5: takes me down there and I'll never forget because that
• 34:09
Speaker 5: day I had a hundred and thirty three dollars in
• 34:13
  Speaker 5: my pocket.
• 34:14
Speaker 2: You probably spent all that out.
• 34:16
Speaker 5: It was. It was seventy three bucks, and I gave
• 34:20
Speaker 5: him eighty five dollars. And when I walked into the building,
• 34:25
Speaker 5: the first person I see is Jerry Burns, and he
• 34:30
Speaker 5: lit into me. What the hell have you been? Olah?
• 34:34
Speaker 5: Practice is going ruh around. You stepped right round and
• 34:37
Speaker 5: I was like, oh, there was nobody there to pick
• 34:39
Speaker 5: me up. I don't know. I had to take a cab.
• 34:42
Speaker 5: You know, you took the cab. I was like yeah,
• 34:43
Speaker 5: And I handed in my receipt and he saw that
• 34:46
Speaker 5: eighty five bucks and he goes, what are you stupid?
• 34:51
  Speaker 5: And I was like what, I don't know where I
• 34:53
Speaker 5: was going because you know, the guy charged me for
• 34:55
  Speaker 5: the whole round.
• 34:56
Speaker 2: Tick absolutely and the time you wait, he was waiting
• 34:59
  Speaker 2: on you.
• 35:00
Speaker 5: And look and he turned and he took the receipt.
• 35:03
Speaker 5: You know, he looks at the receiver. He goes, maybe
• 35:06
Speaker 5: five dollars, What are you stupid? And he turns to
• 35:09
Speaker 5: the secretary and goes, make sure he gets his money.
• 35:12
Speaker 5: Get your so and some downstairs and get to your
• 35:15
Speaker 5: meetings and that and that meeting is where they handed
• 35:20
Speaker 5: me a yellow three ring binder with the defensive stuff
• 35:28
Speaker 5: in it. And that afternoon I took that binder, opened
• 35:33
Speaker 5: it up and toppied all the pages for the defensive
• 35:37
Speaker 5: line stuff and the blitches, and I put it in
• 35:40
Speaker 5: my bag. And from that week of training camp until
• 35:44
Speaker 5: we which was in May, till we came back in August,
• 35:50
Speaker 5: I studied all that. I mean, I had my mom
• 35:53
Speaker 5: in the driveway being the line by just saying by that,
• 35:56
Speaker 5: I think he went the wrong way. I think what
• 35:58
Speaker 5: you say it say Rama, but you're supposed to go
• 36:01
Speaker 5: that way. I mean, I study there, Okay, okay, I
• 36:05
Speaker 5: got when I got the training camp, that first two
• 36:09
Speaker 5: weeks of installation, man, I was like nothing to me.
• 36:12
Speaker 5: I hadn't so it looked like I would changed some quickly,
• 36:16
  Speaker 5: but I just.
• 36:18
Speaker 4: Okay, okay. So I want to switch. I want to
• 36:21
Speaker 4: switch gears because I want to switch to that that
• 36:26
Speaker 4: piece of learning, the playbook, learning what to do, working
• 36:32
Speaker 4: out to to do. You know, know what the calls,
• 36:36
Speaker 4: know when the call is coming, what you're supposed to do,
• 36:40
Speaker 4: Knowing how to make that call, knowing the deep knowing
• 36:43
Speaker 4: the offense, knowing the strength, knowing all that kind of stuff.
• 36:46
Speaker 4: Because for for all the players, high school players, collegiate players,
• 36:52
Speaker 4: middle school players, youth players, and your parents, what you
• 36:58
Speaker 4: have to understand if your goal is to be a
• 37:01
Speaker 4: D one football player, if your goal is to play
• 37:05
Speaker 4: an to be an NFL player, you need to understand
• 37:11
Speaker 4: that if you thought algebra, algebra two, geometry, all that
• 37:17
Speaker 4: kind of stuff was difficult, football without study, without studying,
• 37:25
  Speaker 4: is virtually impossible.
• 37:27
Speaker 2: As you go up the ladder and.
• 37:30
Speaker 4: Explain and again, terminology formations, all of those kinds of things.
• 37:39
  Speaker 2: Those things matter.
• 37:40
Speaker 5: You have to know.
• 37:42
Speaker 4: You have to know right now if this guy moves,
• 37:45
Speaker 4: you're gonna do this. You can't wait or think somebody's
• 37:48
Speaker 4: gonna tell you. They may tell you, but you got
• 37:51
Speaker 4: to know that stuff on your own.
• 37:53
  Speaker 2: That's what I think.
• 37:55
Speaker 4: That piece, the physical piece of being in shape and
• 38:00
Speaker 4: the mental piece that comes with playing D one ball.
• 38:05
Speaker 4: And I'm not saying it's not there for D two
• 38:08
Speaker 4: or any of that, but basically to play football, to
• 38:12
Speaker 4: learn it. When you get away from you know, the
• 38:16
Speaker 4: simplicity of it, you're talking about stuff that makes no sense.
• 38:20
Speaker 4: You know, you could get a call, you may be
• 38:23
Speaker 4: able to give us a call, Hank. I don't know
• 38:24
Speaker 4: if I can remember all the calls, but if you
• 38:26
  Speaker 4: give me a.
• 38:27
Speaker 2: Call, like you got to know all that?
• 38:31
Speaker 5: Well, yeah, you have to know all that because the
• 38:34
Speaker 5: thing that helped me a lot with understanding what you
• 38:39
Speaker 5: were doing, what I was doing, and what the offense
• 38:43
Speaker 5: is doing. Yes, because so many teams when we broke
• 38:47
Speaker 5: down film. In my mind, when I break a film down,
• 38:52
Speaker 5: like if this, okay, here's their favorite formation, let's say
• 38:56
Speaker 5: is strong strong eyes left or whatever. Let's say it's
• 39:04
Speaker 5: strong eye. My thing was how many players do have
• 39:10
Speaker 5: they run out of this? And what are their top
• 39:13
Speaker 5: three plays? Okay, let's go to far eye. How many
• 39:20
Speaker 5: plays have they run out of this and one of
• 39:22
Speaker 5: their top three planes? So once I get there, when
• 39:28
Speaker 5: I see a wrinkle to it, you can't beat me.
• 39:32
  Speaker 5: I know where you're going. I haven't and I'm not
• 39:36
Speaker 5: gonna cheat to that, but you're not gonna beat.
• 39:39
Speaker 2: Me to that either, Okay.
• 39:40
Speaker 4: And here, So for me playing corner, my film study
• 39:46
Speaker 4: was really simple. I wanted to know what routes you
• 39:50
Speaker 4: ran and what routes you didn't run, because if you
• 39:53
Speaker 4: didn't run a route. If you haven't run a post corner,
• 39:56
Speaker 4: I'm not worried about it. If you look like you
• 39:58
Speaker 4: running the post, you running the post because you ain't
• 40:01
Speaker 4: never run a postcorner.
• 40:02
Speaker 2: If you run that post corner, you got me.
• 40:05
  Speaker 5: Wow.
• 40:05
Speaker 4: Yeah and once exactly. And so the study for me
• 40:11
Speaker 4: was just to try to figure out what routes do
• 40:13
Speaker 4: they not run? Because now I know if you take
• 40:17
Speaker 4: an outside release, there's only there's only a few routes
• 40:20
Speaker 4: you can run. You run a takeoff, come back, that's
• 40:22
Speaker 4: about or just maybe an out. But in most cases
• 40:26
Speaker 4: you got to get inside to run a curl, you
• 40:28
Speaker 4: got to get inside to run an in. You got
• 40:30
Speaker 4: all that kind of stuffs. And then now that made
• 40:33
Speaker 4: it so simple to me playing man to man that
• 40:37
Speaker 4: I wasn't. All I needed to do was try to
• 40:39
Speaker 4: figure out where you started wherever you're going to release.
• 40:45
Speaker 4: I already know where you're going.
• 40:48
Speaker 5: Okay, see their lives for us, what the studying of
• 40:55
Speaker 5: film is because as you remember, on Friday was a
• 41:01
Speaker 5: short day for us. But the d line after practice
• 41:06
Speaker 5: we always met as a group. We find one another
• 41:10
Speaker 5: for low miss tackles, we find each terman, we find
• 41:14
Speaker 5: our decency line group in six packs of beer. You
• 41:21
Speaker 5: got two low lasts last week, you old a twin pack.
• 41:25
Speaker 5: You had a misstackle. You old this. So when privately came,
• 41:29
Speaker 5: we got on the practice around one, but the d
• 41:32
Speaker 5: line never left until about three because we would go
• 41:36
Speaker 5: and you know that beer that we we test ourselves,
• 41:40
Speaker 5: We would drink and watch them. I mean we would
• 41:43
Speaker 5: go so far into requesting requesting the uh, the network
• 41:49
Speaker 5: coverage of the games, just so we can get a
• 41:53
Speaker 5: rhythm of the caten that kind of thing.
• 41:57
Speaker 2: Do you remember, do you remember the committee?
• 42:00
Speaker 4: We'd have the committee meetings where where and what the
• 42:05
Speaker 4: committee was was it was a group of players that
• 42:08
Speaker 4: would evaluate each player and if you if you didn't
• 42:14
Speaker 4: do well, you didn't play well, you made some mistakes.
• 42:18
Speaker 2: Basically you had to buy all the.
• 42:21
Speaker 4: Drinks that night, and and and and you couldn't and
• 42:27
Speaker 4: and no matter what anybody said about your play that week.
• 42:30
Speaker 4: So like if Hank were to say, caral Man, you
• 42:32
Speaker 4: ain't give us nothing this week, I mean, you just
• 42:34
Speaker 4: didn't do nothing. You you might as well have not
• 42:37
Speaker 4: even been out there. I'm getting if I get mad
• 42:39
Speaker 4: at Hank. And now we're gonna start talk about trying
• 42:42
Speaker 4: to go to blows. I got to beat up the.
• 42:44
Speaker 2: Whole crew, right, you know.
• 42:47
Speaker 4: And that's when you when you when you think about
• 42:51
Speaker 4: a team, when you think about the expectations of your
• 42:56
Speaker 4: the expectations that your teammates have for you, right, that
• 43:01
Speaker 4: speaks volumes because I knew. I knew that there's no
• 43:06
Speaker 4: way that Hagen's not gonna be in the game. There's
• 43:08
Speaker 4: no way he's not gonna make place. There's no way
• 43:10
Speaker 4: those not gonna make place, no way Mile's not gonna
• 43:13
Speaker 4: make place. And that's gonna help me. So I can't
• 43:17
Speaker 4: afford one of them not to be at their best
• 43:20
Speaker 4: because now if they're not at their best, I can't.
• 43:24
Speaker 5: Play right well. The thing about it is, too, is
• 43:28
Speaker 5: that I think our group had from all the other
• 43:32
Speaker 5: groups that I played with, because I'm I'm not that
• 43:38
Speaker 5: regardless of what Carl says, I'm not that big. First god,
• 43:43
Speaker 5: oh my god, what are you saying?
• 43:46
Speaker 2: What are you saying?
• 43:49
Speaker 5: But in the group, in the group when I was
• 43:52
Speaker 5: in Minnesota, the thing was when somebody said something about
• 43:58
Speaker 5: your play, you got anger, but you kept that anger
• 44:03
Speaker 5: in and you use that anger to correct even if
• 44:09
Speaker 5: you disagreed. Yes, you've had you had to go back
• 44:14
Speaker 5: and actual actually look to see and if you if
• 44:19
  Speaker 5: you weren't right, it's like, hey, I don't see what
• 44:22
Speaker 5: you're saying. Show me here. You can go and see it.
• 44:25
Speaker 5: But you've curbed that anger enough to make yourself and
• 44:30
Speaker 5: at least evaluate your own place in the mirror to yourself.
• 44:36
Speaker 5: And that that held everyone untremble in our group.
• 44:42
Speaker 2: And I think, I think parents and I think young
• 44:46
  Speaker 2: kids today.
• 44:47
Speaker 4: You have to be honest with yourself because you may
• 44:51
Speaker 4: not or a parent has to be honest with the child.
• 44:53
Speaker 4: Child has to be honest with the parent. And you
• 44:55
Speaker 4: got to say, am I putting in the work I'm
• 44:59
Speaker 4: talking about I want to play college ball. I talk
• 45:01
Speaker 4: about I want to be a great high school player.
• 45:03
Speaker 4: I want to be a great middle school player. What
• 45:06
Speaker 4: work are you putting in? Because at the end of
• 45:10
Speaker 4: the day, the work that you put in is going
• 45:14
Speaker 4: to get you the results that you want. You can
• 45:17
Speaker 4: talk about I can talk about Pro Bowl all day long, right,
• 45:21
Speaker 4: but I got I got to put work in in
• 45:24
Speaker 4: order to do that. And the one thing I can think,
• 45:29
Speaker 4: I don't know of any of our top players through
• 45:34
Speaker 4: that eighty seven eighty eight or yes, I don't think
• 45:41
Speaker 4: any of those guys ever came to camp out of shape.
• 45:48
Speaker 5: I'll give you. Let me sum up our eighty seven
• 45:51
Speaker 5: year in a nutshell, our eighty seven year.
• 45:57
Speaker 2: Let me say this. Let me just say this.
• 45:59
Speaker 4: I have another motive behind the eighty seven year two.
• 46:03
Speaker 4: But I'm curious to see why.
• 46:04
  Speaker 2: What you say?
• 46:05
Speaker 5: First, Okay, here it is we get locked out by
• 46:10
  Speaker 5: the owners, and I'm a rookie, so I don't know
• 46:13
Speaker 5: any better. I'm gonna get my money. And that group
• 46:17
Speaker 5: was like, no, you're not gonna be a scaff player,
• 46:20
Speaker 5: and you're gonna stay here with them as a group
• 46:24
Speaker 5: at least three times a week. And we were locked
• 46:28
Speaker 5: out for four weeks out of leave at least three
• 46:32
Speaker 5: times a week, we met as a team in practiced
• 46:37
Speaker 5: by ourselves, by ourselves. That summed up our eighty seven
• 46:44
Speaker 5: playoff run right there.
• 46:47
Speaker 4: Okay, so, and I'm one agree with that. Here was
• 46:53
Speaker 4: here was the other thing? So really, so my point's
• 46:56
Speaker 4: not really the eighty seven season. Mine's gonna be the
• 47:00
Speaker 4: eighty eight season, I guess, because what was interesting to
• 47:05
Speaker 4: me was all the players whose contract was up that year.
• 47:12
Speaker 2: Do you remember that like, So when eighty seven came
• 47:16
  Speaker 2: around or eight.
• 47:18
Speaker 5: I signed the one year deal as rookie because I
• 47:21
Speaker 5: couldn't get but you know, like I said, nobody cared
• 47:25
Speaker 5: for what the what the hell I was going to do?
• 47:27
Speaker 5: And here I am was a rookie. I started all
• 47:30
  Speaker 5: the whole season.
• 47:32
Speaker 4: And and you and you probably had some kind of incentive,
• 47:35
Speaker 4: some kind of number of plays, number of quarters.
• 47:39
Speaker 5: No, no, no that, none of that, and no idea
• 47:42
Speaker 5: that that was. That was the first aging. He was
• 47:45
Speaker 5: just out all about the novel second agent. Oh yeah,
• 47:51
  Speaker 5: it was.
• 47:51
Speaker 4: Good then, yeah, yeah, and see and and and what
• 47:55
Speaker 4: was interesting to me was that everybody was out trying
• 47:58
Speaker 4: to get their money. And so from eighty seven to
• 48:02
Speaker 4: eighty eight, in that eighty eight year off season of
• 48:06
Speaker 4: eighty seven or even during the season, trying to get signed,
• 48:12
Speaker 4: you know, with Mike Linn, was was really a super
• 48:17
Speaker 4: challenge to get a dollar from him. You know, I
• 48:22
Speaker 4: felt like I felt like there was a there was
• 48:26
Speaker 4: an opportunity to divide the team because everybody, everybody thought
• 48:32
Speaker 4: that they should be high paid, they should be paid,
• 48:35
Speaker 4: and didn't nobody want to.
• 48:36
Speaker 2: Be the last the low guy on the pay scale.
• 48:40
Speaker 4: You know, because I mean, think about that team, for
• 48:43
Speaker 4: everybody played well, right, and now you gotta sign all
• 48:48
Speaker 4: of those guys. Basically almost and I truly think Hank
• 48:53
Speaker 4: that there was the whole entire defense had to been up.
• 48:59
  Speaker 2: Up for contract.
• 49:00
Speaker 5: My years an a one year deal because I was
• 49:06
  Speaker 5: up there.
• 49:06
  Speaker 2: I was up, I was in. I was in a
• 49:09
  Speaker 2: an option year.
• 49:11
Speaker 5: So see, well as you look at it, back then,
• 49:16
Speaker 5: the auction year was just another way of the hand company. Yes,
• 49:20
Speaker 5: because there was no options.
• 49:22
Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, what was the option exactly?
• 49:25
Speaker 5: There was no option? Is like, well, we're on the option. Well,
• 49:28
Speaker 5: even then, let's say I played so well as a rookie,
• 49:34
  Speaker 5: I can't get a contract done. I was not allowed
• 49:38
Speaker 5: to go to another team.
• 49:40
Speaker 4: Yeah, all those things where those opportunities did not exist
• 49:46
Speaker 4: at all back then.
• 49:48
Speaker 5: Those are the things that that's another part of the
• 49:52
Speaker 5: evolution of the game. I talk about. We we fought
• 49:56
Speaker 5: so hard for it, even when I didn't understand it.
• 49:59
Speaker 5: I follow the lead of the veteran guys.
• 50:03
Speaker 2: Say that again, Say that again, because that's that's important.
• 50:07
Speaker 5: I followed the lead of the veteran guys. That's something
• 50:11
Speaker 5: you do not have anymore in the NFL. Because if
• 50:18
Speaker 5: you take I played for fourteen years for three different teams,
• 50:22
Speaker 5: it takes all of my contracts, and I had a
• 50:26
Speaker 5: decent contract, Adam all up will not equate to one
• 50:32
Speaker 5: of a contract of a guy you know today four
• 50:35
Speaker 5: year guys by your guys today, it will not equate today.
• 50:40
Speaker 5: But that's the evolution of the game. But had to
• 50:43
Speaker 5: gave me evolved. It's lost something in veteran leadership because
• 50:49
Speaker 5: a veteran nowage was seven years, eight years.
• 50:53
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean when we you know, I came in
• 50:55
Speaker 4: and there was you know, Fred McNeil, Matt Blair. Those
• 51:00
Speaker 4: guys were hangovers from a purple people leaders because I
• 51:06
Speaker 4: want to say, shoot, those guys probably had what eleven, twelve,
• 51:11
Speaker 4: thirteen years Matt. I don't know how long Matt played,
• 51:16
Speaker 4: but those guys had been there for a long time
• 51:19
Speaker 4: and they were when they would say something, you would
• 51:22
  Speaker 4: do it.
• 51:22
  Speaker 2: There's not a cour there's no question.
• 51:24
Speaker 4: And you the reality hang too of if they tell
• 51:29
Speaker 4: you to go do something, you ain't asking them why,
• 51:32
Speaker 4: you ain't challenging them.
• 51:34
  Speaker 2: You're not talking about I'm a grown man. I'm not
• 51:36
Speaker 2: doing that. You gonna you gonna you you would do
• 51:40
Speaker 2: that out of respect.
• 51:43
Speaker 4: And I think and I think that piece of it
• 51:46
Speaker 4: is gone because I'm you know, today, if I'm drafted,
• 51:49
Speaker 4: I'm drafted first round, second round, third round. You know
• 51:52
Speaker 4: I'm getting super money. I'm getting guaranteed super money. I'm
• 51:56
Speaker 4: coming in like I'm the dude.
• 51:59
Speaker 5: Well, and a think about that is nowadays you leave
• 52:03
Speaker 5: in college, you know.
• 52:06
Speaker 2: Yeah, you'd have made a couple of meal. You'd have
• 52:08
Speaker 2: made a couple of meal.
• 52:09
Speaker 5: You made a couple of meal. And if you're if
• 52:11
Speaker 5: you're somebody that's gonna be just and how mem already? Yeah?
• 52:18
Speaker 2: Yeah, how do you? How does that player?
• 52:20
Speaker 4: How does that player come in and and gonna listen
• 52:25
Speaker 4: to me and you as veterans, Why is he gonna
• 52:27
  Speaker 4: listen to us?
• 52:28
Speaker 5: He don't need us exactly.
• 52:31
Speaker 4: But but but back in the day, that was, that
• 52:35
Speaker 4: was law in order, and and and when Bud was there,
• 52:38
Speaker 4: but when when bet, when Bud was there, that was that.
• 52:43
Speaker 4: I dare you to act like you're not gonna listen.
• 52:45
  Speaker 2: To a vet.
• 52:47
Speaker 4: Oh yeah, oh yeah, you you ain't you You're not
• 52:50
Speaker 4: gonna make the team. I don't care who you are, well,
• 52:52
Speaker 4: how good you are? If a VET tells you to
• 52:55
Speaker 4: do something, and you know how they used to do.
• 52:57
Speaker 4: You know, I don't want to call it hazing, but
• 52:59
Speaker 4: you know you'd have take their helmets and shoulder pads
• 53:01
Speaker 4: and carry them in or whatever.
• 53:03
Speaker 2: If if if they wanted, if they gave you the
• 53:06
Speaker 2: helmet told you to carry it in, you better carry
• 53:09
Speaker 2: it in. Okay, Well, now I'll say this.
• 53:16
Speaker 4: As it got forward, as those guys were loyal to it,
• 53:21
  Speaker 4: I wasn't necessarily loyal to it because I wasn't interested
• 53:25
Speaker 4: in trying to make anybody do anything anyway. I didn't
• 53:28
Speaker 4: like doing anything, so I wasn't gonna put that on
• 53:31
Speaker 4: somebody else. Again, that's the evolution of that, that happening
• 53:36
  Speaker 4: and not happening.
• 53:37
Speaker 5: How the game changed, right, It's like like at that point,
• 53:43
Speaker 5: I always carried Doug Money pass with my pads. But
• 53:50
Speaker 5: as a rookie, you know, I wanted to make a team,
• 53:55
Speaker 5: so I did all I heard. So I got on.
• 53:58
Speaker 5: I was put on the point with turn and the
• 54:00
Speaker 5: kickoff team. Okay, one practice, everybody's hurt. So now I'm
• 54:09
Speaker 5: studying those happens. But I'm a rookie, so that means
• 54:13
Speaker 5: I have to do the scout team stuff more. Than offense.
• 54:16
Speaker 2: Yep, I know all about that, dude.
• 54:21
Speaker 5: Kickoff and kickoff and put return always seemed to be
• 54:24
Speaker 5: on the same shrinking day.
• 54:31
Speaker 2: To do all that running, I had to do it.
• 54:33
Speaker 5: I was right there with you, and that that day
• 54:37
Speaker 5: everybody hurt. So I got to do everything. And after
• 54:41
Speaker 5: practice we got to run gassers. And for those who
• 54:45
Speaker 5: years who don't know what a gasser is, that's when
• 54:47
Speaker 5: you from across the field, you run across the field,
• 54:51
Speaker 5: touch across the field, touch across the field, touch and back.
• 54:57
Speaker 5: And that it was a time limit that you had
• 55:02
Speaker 5: to do that. So you always had three of those
• 55:06
Speaker 5: after practice. And after a particular practice, everybody was hurt
• 55:10
Speaker 5: on the befense except me. I said a pull something
• 55:14
Speaker 5: up faked the injury. But I was young and green
• 55:16
Speaker 5: didn't know any better. And there was another guy who
• 55:21
Speaker 5: had been on the team for four or five years,
• 55:23
Speaker 5: never started play all of ten or twelve players, don't
• 55:28
Speaker 5: know why he's still on the team, told me to
• 55:31
  Speaker 5: carry his pads.
• 55:33
Speaker 2: I know who you're talking about.
• 55:36
Speaker 5: Yeah, we played the same we played both play d line,
• 55:39
Speaker 5: and so my response to him was to kick his
• 55:44
Speaker 5: hands as hard as I hear this one, as I said,
• 55:49
Speaker 5: and we get to row bo.
• 55:51
Speaker 2: See that, you know, see that?
• 55:52
Speaker 4: See that's the bad that would that's the bad thing
• 55:55
Speaker 4: man is is like you gotta be you gotta know,
• 55:59
Speaker 4: like you gotta know who you're going to try to
• 56:01
Speaker 4: You know who you're gonna and I'll just call it hazy,
• 56:03
Speaker 4: who you're gonna try to hate? Who you gonna try
• 56:05
Speaker 4: to get to carry your pads? Come on, you can't
• 56:08
  Speaker 4: if you don't. And I know, like I said, I
• 56:10
Speaker 4: know exactly who you're talking about, you know, And and
• 56:13
Speaker 4: come on, man, bro, you got to carry your own pass.
• 56:16
Speaker 5: You've been on the team for four to five years.
• 56:22
Speaker 5: I've been on the team for all of twelve days
• 56:25
Speaker 5: and I'm the starter and you're gonna tell me to
• 56:28
Speaker 5: carry your time? That that was? That was? That was?
• 56:41
Speaker 4: That's you know those stories there are are really the
• 56:45
  Speaker 4: interesting pieces to.
• 56:47
Speaker 2: The ego of of an athlete that's on a ProTeam.
• 56:52
Speaker 5: Well see that. That's another thing. There's this fine line
• 56:56
Speaker 5: between fun saving and bullying. Yes, yes, his was.
• 57:02
Speaker 2: His was more like a bully.
• 57:05
Speaker 5: Yeah, And I was not after all that, I was
• 57:10
Speaker 5: not in the move, moved for it, and I never
• 57:14
Speaker 5: forget Floyd Peters being Floyd Peterson saying you got that
• 57:20
  Speaker 5: much in fighting.
• 57:27
  Speaker 4: So so we're gonna, we're gonna, we're gonna, we're gonna,
• 57:29
Speaker 4: we're gonna wrap We're gonna wrap it up here in
• 57:32
Speaker 4: just a second. But what I want, what I want
• 57:34
Speaker 4: from you, Hank, is two, if there's the athlete or
• 57:39
  Speaker 4: the parent that's out there that's that that's that's wanting
• 57:42
Speaker 4: to be good, wanting to ultimately get to that that
• 57:48
Speaker 4: D one level, wants to maybe play professional professional sports,
• 57:52
Speaker 4: because it doesn't really make any difference because everything to
• 57:56
Speaker 4: get to the professional level, everything is requires the same
• 57:59
Speaker 4: time type of thing. So give those folks because I've
• 58:04
Speaker 4: said it a thousand times and I'm just I'm curious
• 58:07
Speaker 4: that how you may say it, and then we'll wrap
• 58:09
  Speaker 4: this up.
• 58:11
Speaker 5: All right for me to be If you want to
• 58:15
Speaker 5: be that top athlete, first and foremost, you got to
• 58:20
Speaker 5: enjoy it. If it's work. Anytime you leave the house
• 58:24
Speaker 5: to go lift weight and it seems like work. Anytime
• 58:28
Speaker 5: you leave the house to go run or do sprints
• 58:32
Speaker 5: in the stadium or the thing, it feels like work.
• 58:36
Speaker 5: It doesn't feel like fun. It's just something that you do.
• 58:40
Speaker 5: You're going to have a problem if you can't. If
• 58:44
Speaker 5: it feels like work and it's not enjoyable, you're not
• 58:47
Speaker 5: going to put in the time and an effort that
• 58:50
Speaker 5: it's required to conferience what you want. If you put it,
• 58:55
Speaker 5: if you get the same Okay, let me take that back,
• 58:59
Speaker 5: not the same joy, because I didn't get the same
• 59:01
Speaker 5: joy out of running. When I went and ran, there
• 59:05
Speaker 5: was a joy there. There was something I was looking
• 59:07
Speaker 5: forward to do with it, even though in my mind
• 59:10
Speaker 5: back then I didn't quit it back to that I
• 59:14
Speaker 5: was getting ready for the things I did in NFL,
• 59:19
Speaker 5: but it was a part of something that I enjoyed doing.
• 59:22
Speaker 5: If you don't put in the work, and you don't
• 59:26
Speaker 5: find joy in putting in the work, you're not gonna
• 59:30
Speaker 5: accomplish the things that you want to do, and you're
• 59:33
Speaker 5: gonna get to the point where you're gonna if you
• 59:36
Speaker 5: put in the work and it seemed like a grind
• 59:41
Speaker 5: or actual work, when you get to that almost to
• 59:46
Speaker 5: that threshold, you're gonna have a breakdown. You're gonna lose it.
• 59:51
Speaker 5: Enjoy was doing and work hard at it. That's all
• 59:55
Speaker 5: I got to say about it.
• 59:56
Speaker 4: And I'll and I'll say this. I know working out myself.
• 1:00:03
Speaker 4: When I worked out getting ready for camp like, it
• 1:00:07
Speaker 4: wasn't hard. It wasn't hard to go to get up
• 1:00:10
Speaker 4: early in the morning and do it because I knew
• 1:00:12
Speaker 4: I had to do it. Because I knew somebody was
• 1:00:15
Speaker 4: gonna be coming into the Vikings, to Marshall, to South
• 1:00:20
Speaker 4: Charleston High School that that was gonna want to play
• 1:00:24
  Speaker 4: my position.
• 1:00:26
  Speaker 5: Yeah, and I didn't have I was.
• 1:00:30
Speaker 2: Not gonna take that.
• 1:00:31
Speaker 4: I was not gonna take that chance to give somebody
• 1:00:33
Speaker 4: a chance to be in better shape than I was.
• 1:00:37
Speaker 4: I wanted to be in the best shape of anybody
• 1:00:39
Speaker 4: that was that was possible.
• 1:00:41
Speaker 2: On the team that that was That was my goal.
• 1:00:45
Speaker 4: But that ladies and gentlemen, I hope that you can
• 1:00:47
