- 1:17the Adventures of Philip Marlowe the original air date September the twenty fourth of nineteen
- 1:23fifty and the Tittle the Fat at KF get this and get it straight.
- 1:27Crime is a Sucker's road. Those are traveling wind up in the gut of
- 1:30the prison of the grave. This time rains slashing a glass roof, an
- 1:34old man's curiosity, and an imaginary imp out of place. They all became
- 1:38important when two people died violently so a third could make a killing. From
- 1:45the pen of Raymond Chandler, outstanding author of crime fiction, comes his most
- 1:48famous character in the Adventures of Philip marlow All, with Gerald Moore starred as
- 2:02Philip Marlowe. We bring you tonight's exciting story, The Battered Calf, the
- 2:24first film of the season, came as a surprise. It always does in
- 2:29la where somehow other people are never ready for it. It's funny in a
- 2:32town where people are ready for anything for every year. The opening slash of
- 2:37lightning stands nerves on age and cracks composure like it was so much drenched in
- 2:40China, and by five o'clock in an afternoon of driving rain and thick gray
- 2:45sky, I was no exception. There wasn't helped anybody. The arrival of
- 2:47a special delivery letter, one hundred dollars bill in clothes, which dragged me
- 2:52out of my suddenly cozy office, hit in my car and over to Studio
- 2:54City in the San Fernando Valley, where, according to the letter, Junior's
- 2:59Poppy, the veteran cartoonist and creator of the Impish Peter Pageant comic strip,
- 3:04wanted to see me at once. But as I wound up the spiral of
- 3:07McAdam call sun swept drive to at number thirty eight forty, I forgot about
- 3:10the storm around me and wondered the instate, about the man I was going
- 3:14to meet. Wonder just how many pots Pixie, the originator of a half
- 3:16leprechaun, half very funny human being, will tickle the nation slateric funny boom
- 3:22daily from coast to coast, was going to be. And when I was
- 3:24parked in front of the place, which was a few million rain drops,
- 3:27bouncing off a roof that was all glass, out of my car and going
- 3:30to the front door, I had made up my mind. Junior's Poppy had
- 3:34to be small, slight, delicate, and maybe self effacing, but certainly
- 3:38pleasant. Mister my alarm, How wrong can I bees? Oh uh,
- 3:43mister poppy, it's of hers. Come in, Come in, you're getting
- 3:45rich hot an don't touch anything, you're shoked. Junior's Poppy was tall,
- 3:53heavy set, gruff, and a crab. I dripped little puddles of water
- 3:57behind him and threw a long hall into a studio, which was a half
- 3:59a dozen heals under twice as many fluorescent lights and a litter of Peter Pageant
- 4:03drawings everywhere. Then, while mister Poppy did not offer me drink, cigarette
- 4:08or even chair, I became resourceful. I took off my own coat,
- 4:12drop in the corner where it sloshed into it a scrundled heap, and I
- 4:15defiantly lit a cigarette and started to please I spies tobacco. Excuse me now,
- 4:19first, mister manor a few facts. I've been drawing Peter Padgen for
- 4:24twenty seven years, but unlike most of the syndicated cartoonist, I employed those
- 4:28staff reuse no material, allow nothing to be published that I haven't created personally,
- 4:31down to the last strugg of the pen. However, I do have
- 4:34an assistant who serves two purposes. One he inks in the balloon what the
- 4:40circles where the words go? And two and more important, he watches me
- 4:44work daily so that when I'm gone, even cartoonist done Peter Paget will continue
- 4:49uninterrupted. My assistant is named Sid Kagan, and he uh how to be
- 4:55more exactly, He's wife, Louise, is the reason I'm hiring you.
- 4:59Twice mouth to ask a question, but twice he waved a question aside liking
- 5:02him, let's by the minute I listened to him tell me what. For
- 5:04the past week, Kagan had been first preoccupied, and then upset, and
- 5:08finally revellious Poppy of Bachelor. Didn't want to lose a good man because of
- 5:12anything as trivial as a marital problem. I had investigated and learned that Louise
- 5:15Kagan had spent a week in San Francisco recently, but he hadn't learned anymore
- 5:19because an appointment he had made with her to talk it all over. Since
- 5:23the slooping was not subtle, it was quite pros today, manaw, we
- 5:27were to meet at a cocktail lounge. I was early until I saw her
- 5:30come in in saddan. She's the type of tor brunette you don't miss.
- 5:34I was about to start toward her when she suddenly leaped from her table and
- 5:36hurried out of the place for no reason. Me, don't interrupt me,
- 5:40Mana, of course you had a reason. She was frightened at the sight
- 5:43of a man approaching her. He was very ugly, pat and another here
- 5:46solah complexion, eyes that belong on a hawk. He followed her out,
- 5:49but she got away from him and then he disappeared too. Louise hasn't called
- 5:53your sense to explain until late last night. Now and then she apologized and
- 5:57lied about why she didn't show up forgot she said, actual like overally cares
- 6:00your likeness to man. I please don't touch those runnings. Sorry. We
- 6:06made another appointment for six thirty to night at a different place, an artists
- 6:10hang out called the Talisman on a Lancashim. This time, Arrow, I
- 6:14want you to go in my place. Perhaps my approach is to mechanical.
- 6:17There's just a chance, now, mister Poppy, a few questions first to
- 6:20Kagan's home address seven one seven Magnolia below US seven one seven. And Kagan
- 6:25himself is still working for you regularly. Shallow he called this morning. He
- 6:28said he was sick. Now, please ask your questions quickly. I must
- 6:30return to my work. Peter Pageant's schedule four frames a day hasn't been interrupted
- 6:35in twenty seven years. Ah here this might interests you. Here, take
- 6:39a look at this. The last frame has a lot of d sail.
- 6:42Yeah, it has Peter addressing the US Senator. It's cute. He always
- 6:46working pencil and ink in later, yes, yes, now anything else yeah,
- 6:50there is, mister Poppy, the whole business Kegan's problem. I mean,
- 6:54if it's only a case of a gal not being true to a guy,
- 6:56I quit and you get your dough back graduated from me over the truck,
- 7:00hadsome class the reach changing is not the kind of girl who plays around.
- 7:02I know what makes you so sure? For one thing? An example,
- 7:06Meniard Rope who minior drove pet he's an agent for Empire. Features that
- 7:11seem to get that handles my work and no extremely handsome and what the ladies
- 7:15would call smooth. He got no place being Should I say a tinion to
- 7:18Louise, I could tell I observed now satisfying in the moment, I can
- 7:25still play that Rope just wasn't her type. I'll call you later, mister
- 7:28Poppy. Goodbye, and that don't bother showing me out and I can find
- 7:30the way myself. Impulse number one said, nuts to the funny on paper
- 7:41only, mister Poppy. But Impulse number two said, quiet model, it's
- 7:44a storm that's making you jump in. There's one hundred dollars bill in your
- 7:46pocket. So I got into my car and drove the mile and a half
- 7:49of seven seventeen Magnolia Boulevard, where I figured i'd look over the cake and
- 7:54home ground before it was time for me to show the tells one. As
- 7:57I drove past the place, I saw there was a light in the big
- 8:00room and a woman little nette and attractive, who was no doubt the lady
- 8:05of the house, paging to a magazine. And things stayed like that each
- 8:09time I came around the block. But twenty minutes later, when I parked
- 8:13in front of a nearby corner drug store to get cigarettes, I forgot the
- 8:16lady of the house because getting out of a park car in front of me
- 8:18was a man with sallow complexion and eyes borrowed from a hawk, easily seen
- 8:24by the rain splash light from the display windows. And when he hurried inside
- 8:26into a phone booth, I saw the patent leather hair mister Poppy had already
- 8:30described. And he got his call through and turned his back to the street.
- 8:35I moved quickly to his car, opened the front door, struck a
- 8:37match, and read the name and address on the owner's card strapped around the
- 8:39steering wheel. It was Bert's Slack. Two hundred Central Avenue, San Francisco,
- 8:45California, the city in which Louise kingand recently chosen to spend a week.
- 8:50A clock on the dashboard reminded me it was six fifteen, in time
- 8:52to head my rendezvous with the talisman. But the little boys deep inside,
- 8:56said mister Burt Slack shouldn't, so it was worth I reached under the bashboard
- 9:01and yanked the ignition wire, and I got back into my car, hoping
- 9:03to gain ten minutes, and headed to out the club. I'm like Shian
- 9:07Boulevard. The scotch and soda soon keep the rain from choking all the way
- 9:22through, you know. Hey, yeah, all right, another scotch and
- 9:24soda. Hey, wait a minute, Wait a minute. That lady there,
- 9:26the one of the blue Caper, just came in. I ask her
- 9:28to come over to mister Poppy's table, will do a lot of it.
- 9:31Drew in a keep the rain from soaking all the way through. Isn't that
- 9:35awesome? I'm awfully sorry, I'm late Junior's Oh excuse me, waiter,
- 9:39you made a minute, missus Kegan. The mistake was mine on purpose.
- 9:43You wouldn't have known me by name, which is what Philip Marlowe, I'm
- 9:46a friend of Junius's. He was tied up with his work tonight and asked
- 9:50me to keep his state for him like a drink. No thanks, I
- 9:52haven't got the time. But why didn't Junius call me or leave a message
- 9:56here? I don't know steps she forgot her? Perhaps you are alive.
- 10:00Perhaps he called my place after I left, then called here, waiter,
- 10:03Will you please check with the captain and see if anyone left a message for
- 10:05missus? Kagan pleads, And on your way back to Scotch and SODA's.
- 10:09Huh yes, Now just a minute, mister Marlow, I've already said no.
- 10:13As long as we're playing things back, you already said I was a
- 10:15liar. Why because Juniors told me that my meeting with him would be personal,
- 10:18and since he's gone far enough out of his way to even call me
- 10:22on the telephone about it, it must also be important to him. It
- 10:24is as important to him as say San Francisco is for you. So you're
- 10:31not really a friend of Junior's, Poppy, not buddy, buddy. No,
- 10:35but I am a friend of Bert Slack's, you know Slack. Yeah,
- 10:39why don't you sit down, Louise, Our drinks are coming. We
- 10:43are too scotches and sodas just the thing to keep the ring. I already
- 10:48said that one to night. Yes you did. Yeah, well do scotch
- 10:50and SODA's just like you ordered. Oh and there's no message for you,
- 10:54missus Kagan. Thank you. Mister Morlow. You know about San Francisco,
- 10:58you know about Bert Slack and somehow are you know? I was supposed to
- 11:01meet Junius Poppy here and he couldn't make it. So why don't you just
- 11:03sit here and think it out all by yourself? Huh? I'm going.
- 11:07I'm back here when I'm ready, gentle lady, which might be right now?
- 11:11Don't you think Maynor? Thank Heaven, you're here? Are you see
- 11:13him? Louise? Well, my good man, have you reached your decision?
- 11:16Got the young lady's arm? I mean, let go Maynard. Please
- 11:20see that he doesn't follow me. It will be a pleasure, Louise.
- 11:24What are we drinking, mister Marlow? Mallow, scotch and soda. I
- 11:30wonder what keeps that from soaking through? Man had rope with a handsome syndicate
- 11:37agent. Junius Poppy, at tagged very smooth, was also very snide when
- 11:41he slid into the booths next to me, and we each had a fresh
- 11:43drink. While Louise kegan put distance between us. I knew that the urge
- 11:46I had to punch him in his finally chiseled Grecian nose could not be blamed
- 11:50on the stormy weather. It would be just as much fun on a sunny
- 11:54day. A couple of minutes later, when he got up, flashed glistening
- 11:58up as and lowers at me and started to leave it the word snipe,
- 12:00bye bye boy. I had to hold on tight. Somewhere along the line,
- 12:05I slipped, hey, roper if I got something? Oh what is
- 12:11it this there? Oh? Also you didn't tight me for your drink?
- 12:16It was road of here, bye bye boy. Outside, I felt better
- 12:26as I walked around to the alley behind the club where I thought my car.
- 12:30I noticed the rain that tightened up to a drizzle. It was about
- 12:31ready to call it quits. At a corner of the sky already showed dark
- 12:35blue with a single star front and center. But I didn't notice until I
- 12:39was in line with my front friends was company on hand? I have been
- 12:43waiting for you. It was wide open eyes that flashed something close to a
- 12:48sterior the length of a long thin on that was pointed at me and trembled
- 12:50while a hand awkwardly held a gun for what had to be his first time.
- 12:54Hi am sid Kagan. I want to know why you're following my wife,
- 12:56what you had to do with her. I do know that you are
- 12:58private, detected, even that your name is Philip Marlow. That junior Poppy
- 13:01hired you that much I found down and you at to be able to put
- 13:05the rest together yourself. You're a big boy. Now. Junius is worried
- 13:09about you, Kegan, because you won't turn a worried about your wife.
- 13:11Look, he wants to help you all the way around. You don't believe
- 13:13you. I only believe that people are bothering Louis, molesting her, driving
- 13:16her out of her mind, and I want to stop them. I want
- 13:20to protect her, all right. Take a look at this picture and see
- 13:24if you can tell me whether or not this is one of those you say
- 13:26I'm a lesting her picture. Let me see I don't sure with a clip
- 13:33out here. Also, I'll give you some advice. Go on home,
- 13:39Kegan, and soakia hot head and a bucket ice Colus. The most you
- 13:41can do to help me beat it before I get mad. Gone, all
- 13:43right, I'll go, but remember Marlow, I'm still going to protect my
- 13:48wife. Yeah, remember Kagan jerk. I think it's stupid as an amateur
- 13:54with a gun, I'm no amateur. Oh fine, I wouldn't bother looking
- 14:01under the hood either. We're now even one torn ignition wire deserves another.
- 14:07Well, mister slack, han't that thirty eight? Been waiting long? Long
- 14:11enough? So you're a private detective, eh, Now that's interesting. I'm
- 14:16a private eye too. Really, you find crumbs in every profession. Where
- 14:22do we go from here? No place? It's a team anyhow, I'm
- 14:24finished. I've done my little job. I'm leaving town. The personal business
- 14:28had brought me here is over and done with. All's well, you'd be
- 14:33smart to look at it that way yourself, Jack, Yeah, brilliant,
- 14:35brilliant. We'll go over a big with my client with that. What's the
- 14:39difference how it goes over with your client? Now? Why don't you read
- 14:43the papers? Meaning what the latest edition? Here? Catch and read Ni's
- 14:48puppy out loud? Marlow please found dead in the studio City home. Creator
- 14:54of Peter Pageants shot the death. Surprised huh Yeah, Well that's too bad,
- 15:01but I guess you'll get over it. Why do you walk all the
- 15:03way down this alley without turning around? Go on, move, mister Marlowe
- 15:11as directed goodbye in a moment the second act of Philip Marlowe. But first
- 15:33you'll say where is the time gone? When you listen to Club fifteen,
- 15:37the great quarter hour show of melody, song and patter starring Dick Haymes,
- 15:39with the Andrews Sisters, Evelon Knight, and the Modern Airs, You'll like
- 15:43singing host Dick Haymes. You'll like song stars Evel and Knight and the Andrews
- 15:48Sisters. In fact, you'll like everything about Club fifteen. Listen every weekday
- 15:52evening over most of these same CBS stations the show that you love this No
- 16:00all listen careful, leave me and Hippy Now with our star Gerald Moore,
- 16:11we returned to the second act of Philip marlow and Tonight's story the Fatted Cap,
- 16:22when the man named Slack with a code of ethics to match said walk,
- 16:27I walked. By the time I taken ten steps, I knew that
- 16:30he was already gone. So I went back to my car, cursed my
- 16:33way through a fast repair job on the wiring, and edited to my late
- 16:37client studio again. When I got there, the usual messy routine of cameras,
- 16:41tape measures, and notebooks were still in progress, and I was about
- 16:42to go inside. It changed my mind when I saw Louise keg and step
- 16:47b lithely out the door and walk almost jauntly over the flagstones that led from
- 16:51the house to the parking area. Hey Louise, wait you again? Well,
- 16:57what do you want? Just one? You had morbid reason why you're
- 17:00not making with tears of a watch inside, And I never lost any love
- 17:03in there. If I pretended I had, it wouldn't pull anybody for five
- 17:07minutes. Nobody liked Junia's poppy and I was no exception. I'd you're real
- 17:10easy with that kind of talk from now on. If I were you,
- 17:11what's that crack supposed to mean? But not later than tomorrow morning? Your
- 17:15husband said, will take over Peter Pageant completely. So you struck gold Jerry
- 17:18and you got it made. Are you implying that I had something to do
- 17:22with Junior's death? Oh? I doubt that you pulled the trigger baby personally,
- 17:26but there's a good, solid connection and I'm going to find it as
- 17:30your husband inside with the police. No, I came here looking for him.
- 17:33He must be at home. How much does the cops know so far?
- 17:36Nothing except that juniors died between two and three hours ago. Look,
- 17:40why don't you trot in and ask to me yourself? Quiz master. I
- 17:41don't think they can help me. You see, I'm still interested in a
- 17:45big, ugly question. Mark ill wrapped up with San Francisco. And before
- 17:49I turn loose of it, I'll understand it. Believe me. Going over
- 17:53to your place now to talk to sick? Can I give you a list?
- 17:56No? Thank you? Suit yourself. I'll get there ahead of you
- 17:59and find something you wouldn't want me to know about. All right, I'll
- 18:03ride with you. Let's go. Let's do that. Get in. Thanks
- 18:19so much for the ride. You know I wouldn't have enjoyed it a bit
- 18:22more than a hurt. You can drop the acid routine, Louise, I
- 18:25got a thick skin. Let's go inside now. Look, Marlos, it
- 18:26isn't home. I can see from here the lights are out. Only prove
- 18:30somebody turned a switch. Come on, open up, right, come on,
- 18:34that's better. And since you're making yourself so at home, you might
- 18:37as well make yourself a drink. Hey, it's a good idea. Nice
- 18:41little boy you got here, honey. Always easy to talk with a drink
- 18:45in your Hey, Louise, these papers on the table. I haven't seen
- 18:51him before. Contracts, I'd say, yeah, all filled out, just
- 18:56waiting for Kegan's signature. So her husband is now a full fledged big time
- 19:00cottoonis what do you know? Pretty fast work? Huh? The creator of
- 19:06Peter Pageant's been dead not more than three hours and already a success as contract
- 19:10had drawn up. I wonder Junius was bitter. Maynard Rupert had those drawn
- 19:14up beforehand, just in case, just in case somebody's patience ran out.
- 19:17Could be your husband's. I want to talk to him, all out of
- 19:18your mind. He's been here, baby, and not long ago either.
- 19:22There's his trench coat on the chair. What maybe he left again, and
- 19:25maybe he didn't. You take a look to the rest of the house.
- 19:26If you find him, telling him to come on out, there's still time
- 19:29to talk or go on. She gave me a glare that said she'd like
- 19:36to run my head for a gbage disposal unit and walk past me to the
- 19:38hole, he said held the French coat. I saw an interesting smudge on
- 19:42the elbow. The right sleeve was an imprint of the little cartoon character Peter
- 19:47Pageant, in the exact pose I'd seen earlier, Peter Pageant addressing the United
- 19:51States Senate. It can only mean one thing. The right sleeve of the
- 19:53coat I was holding had been jammed down into wedding on Junior's Poppies drawing board
- 19:57shortly after I left his studio night. I was still looking at the coat
- 20:02when Louise came back. She started to say something, but the doorbell interrupted
- 20:04and kept on interrupting him. Finally she walked over and answer it. It
- 20:10was bird slacked, a man from San Francisco. His face green and waxy,
- 20:12would have worn the same look if he'd been falling out of a tense
- 20:15story window. And knew he couldn't hold on. He gripped the door casing
- 20:18with both hands, like a slow motion fireman sliding down a pole. Suddenly,
- 20:22he jerked up one hand and pointed at Louise. He turned his eyes
- 20:27at me and tried to speak. Then he took five slidings stumbling steps into
- 20:32the room and pitched headlong to the floor, the handle of a knife ring
- 20:36by a patch of drying blood stuck out of his back between the shoulder blades.
- 20:41Thinks head did it? Why Louise, what's the reason? Oh no,
- 20:44I didn't mean That'll get away chat slack with a cheap private eye from
- 20:48San Francisco and you just got back from there. What happened at the Luise?
- 20:51Why do you think your husband had to kill this guy? Oh no,
- 20:53I won't tell you. I don't know anything. I'll leave me alone,
- 20:56all right, all right, get hold estabiosterical. Now listen to me.
- 21:00Why does rope lip come on main and roper? Is that? R's
- 21:03ninety four Edison even he's why because your husband might be there and I want
- 21:07to talk to him now more than ever. You're on your own, baby,
- 21:10Get good in a circle if you want to, I'll see you in
- 21:15ninety four. Addison Avenue was a she like pine on a rivy bungalow,
- 21:18hiding behind ten feet of manicured hedge and flanked by a small swimming pool that
- 21:23involved more chromium than water, and the door open in response to a deep
- 21:27toned gown. I saw several thousand dollars worth of Chinese modern dudad behind the
- 21:32coiled silk smoking jacket wrapped around Maine and roper. First Glad helping him,
- 21:37hated me and then changed his mind and the smile wah, hello mon.
- 21:41No you've seen how hot temple luiaze lately? Yeah? I just left her.
- 21:45She had the temper scared out of it. When a guy died on
- 21:48a living room floor, how horrible. Yeah. This one had a knife
- 21:52in his back. He'd been carrying it for some time. Made it as
- 21:56far as Kagan's because he had something important to say, but he couldn't it
- 22:00out. The name was Slack from San Francisco. Have you hear of him
- 22:03Slack? Well? No, they tell me if you've seen Sid Kagan recently?
- 22:07I mean within the last hour, Yes, twice, once when I
- 22:10took his new contracts to his place, and again when he came here to
- 22:11talk to them over He left a few minutes ago. Say where he was
- 22:15going? No, wait, he did say intended to stop at a drug
- 22:18store. He had a white drug store with the one down the street about
- 22:21a block of a look Marlow. Surely you don't really believe that Sid killed
- 22:23this man? He had a motive. You realize what you're saying. What
- 22:27have you got to go on? Actually, as slip as wife maiden and
- 22:30the Peter Pagens had turned up out of place, Luis was no doubt hysterical
- 22:34under those circumstances. I'd be too. And that's what Peter Pageant. Don't
- 22:38forget that Sid's been practicing him for six years. He probably combs Peter Pagins
- 22:44out of his hair at night. Not this one was on a trench coat
- 22:47sleeve. I found it in said Kagan's living room, was picked up from
- 22:49wed ink on Junior's Poppy's drawing board tonight. In fact, there was the
- 22:53last Peter Pagant Juniors drew before he was killed. That's what I've got to
- 22:56go on, mister Ropers. Oh thanks and good night. I got my
- 23:04car and drove fat till I found the drug store, and then pulled up
- 23:07across the street from the place and watched a can was waiting out in front.
- 23:11When the door opened in the store, I started to get out,
- 23:14but he stopped again. As Sid Kigan, the collar of his trench coat
- 23:18turned up high, and both hands thrust deep in his pocket, shouldered his
- 23:22way out, gotten a cab, and drove away. I sat there for
- 23:26a few minutes until the crazy logic and the crazy pattern finally sank in,
- 23:30and I turned and drove back toward ninety four Addison, A few houses down
- 23:34the street. I parked, got out, and after dropping my gun in
- 23:37my pocket, I left my hand curl around it and walked in past the
- 23:38chromium swimming pool, up to the pine Anady house and looked in was deserted.
- 23:45I kind of started for the gate again, but that was as far
- 23:48as I got. I'm not inside, Mollow, I'm here behind you.
- 23:52Don't move automatic at all. Huh. They get nerve enough to stick here
- 23:56and wait for me. Roper, I had no choice, raised him up
- 23:59slowly, and don't turn around. I'll take your gun first, Okay,
- 24:03I'll get inside. So it was your transcode I founded Kagan's Huh if I
- 24:08gotten left it there when you took the contracts over. Yes, and when
- 24:11you told me about it, I followed you. I saw you spot Kagan
- 24:15still wearing his coat at drug store, and I knew then that you come
- 24:18back here after me. I'm still sure sure you know you might have gotten
- 24:23away with old Junius Poppy's murder because you were the only one with no motive,
- 24:26apparently, which I clutted it up by killing your partner Slack too.
- 24:30Slack was stupid and loud mouthed. Had a double cross meal at the cat
- 24:34out of the bag the first time he got drunk. Blackmailers have to keep
- 24:37their secret, so they go out of business fast. With you, It's
- 24:41obvious that I have no choice. It's you or me. Yeah, yeare
- 24:48a smart boy, roper. How'd you manage to cut in on? What's
- 24:51Slack new? He tried to find out for me whether Sid loved his wife
- 24:55enough to pay to keep her out of jail and how much you could demand
- 24:56and expect to get, and told you he was stupid. Believe me,
- 25:00Shell, the idea of getting rid of Junior so Sid could get enough money
- 25:02to make blackmailing and worthwhile. It was quite a switch, but what a
- 25:04good agent might think of Shan Still, don't try for anything on that table?
- 25:10Why not? What are you saving me for a more conversation? No,
- 25:15I just wanted to get my breath. I've had quite a day,
- 25:18remember all right, let's go now where out back to the garage? Go
- 25:22on gomorrow. Is he dead? I don't know. I don't think so.
- 25:37You sure have picked the sweet time to show up, baby, how'd
- 25:38you manage it? I was out there a long time listening when I realized
- 25:42what was happening. I came in. Saved my thick skin or kill a
- 25:45blackmailer. Once I killed a man unintentionally, I didn't want to do it
- 25:51again, even him. But tonight, when I thought Sid, it's stab
- 25:53brut fike because of it, I couldn't stand it any longer. I came
- 25:56over to find you and turn myself in question Mark on San Francisco. Oh,
- 26:02there was a brawl. I got mixed up in it. A man
- 26:04had a gun and then a struggle, it went off and killed him.
- 26:07I was scared, silly. I ran away, but Slack had seen the
- 26:11whole thing. He even got the gun with my fingerprints all over it,
- 26:14and well that's that. Let's go Model, Yeah, okay, baby,
- 26:22let's go. Two refails, please said, it's going to be a long
- 26:41night. Yes. I still can't get it through my head that this has
- 26:45happened, mad, I can't realize it. Slack saw that Titan San Francisco
- 26:49got the gun with Luis's fingerprints on it and came to to blackmail. That's
- 26:53right. He went the rope of for information on you, and Roper was
- 26:56smart enough to peck it and cut in killed Junior so you'd get more money
- 27:00by taking over the strip. And then and then he and slackly going to
- 27:02fight between themselves and may not killed him too. How can there be people
- 27:07like that? Same way they can be rattlesnakes, black widow spiders and cancers.
- 27:11Marlow, what is going to happen to Louise? I don't know,
- 27:15Sid, but she's got something now she didn't have before. What is that
- 27:21you? He loved her all the time, but she didn't know what that
- 27:25meant. She does now looks she might be finished with the police. Maybe
- 27:29better go over there, Yes, I guess i'd better. Good night,
- 27:33Phil, and thank you so long, said as he crossed the street and
- 27:53went into police headquarters. I turned back to my coffee and thought about Peter
- 27:57Pageants, the impish, whimsical little character with a sly, gnoying smile,
- 28:06half sad, half amused at the foibles of the world. And the world
- 28:12seems more and more to be made of halves like that. Old song,
- 28:18How's it go? Sometimes I'm happy, sometimes I'm blue. Sudden storms and
- 28:27sudden calms. Maybe most of us are only half alive. H Take me
- 28:34for instance, Half of me wants to go home and sit in front of
- 28:38a roaring fire with a drink and a good book, and the other half,
- 28:45Yeah, there's always an other half. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe Bringing
- 29:08You Raymond, Chandler's most famous character and crime's most deadly enemy, star Gerald
- 29:14Moore and are produced and directed by Norman McDonald. Script is by Meldon la
- 29:18Robert Mitchell and Gene Levitt. Featured in the cast were Vivi Janis, Howard
- 29:22mcneer, Parley Bear, Bill Johnstone, and David Ellis. The special music
- 29:26is composed and conducted by Richard Rand Be sure and be with us next week.
- 29:36When Philip Marlowe says, it started with a wreck and went from there
- 29:40to double murder over seventy five thousand bucks worth of glory that nobody got me
- 29:45in because I found out just in time what was fishy about the Tale of
- 29:48the Mermaid. If you want to keep ahead of the headlines, listen every
- 30:04weekday evening Monday through Friday over most of these same CBS stations to Edward R.
- 30:10Murrow with the news. Mister Murrow is radio's most distinguished reporter. Is
- 30:14informal but informed manner of presenting the news has earned him more awards than any
- 30:18other newscaster on the air. This is Paul Masterson speaking. Now stay tuned
- 30:22for Gangbusters, which follows immediately over most of these same CBS stations. This
- 30:27is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System. Welcome back. I have to say
- 30:41this is probably one of the most short sighted murder plots. The existing artist
- 30:49had taught a lot of his tricks to his assistant, but to assume that
- 30:53the assistant's going to be able to carry on is a big gamble, and
- 30:59the agent could lose years of commissions. So I don't know. Maybe the
- 31:03title this one ought to have been The Golden Goose, though there were quite
- 31:07a few twists in this and another chance to hear Howard mcnuir in a different
- 31:14role. I actually found it pretty easy to buy Howard McNear as a cartoonist.
- 31:19It was difficult to buy into the descriptions of the character's overall behavior and
- 31:26motivations. As mcneer's voice is probably about perfect for what we would imagine the
- 31:32cartoonist as being. Well. Now we turn to listener comments and feedback,
- 31:37and Kevin emails in, Hi, Adam, I wanted to drop you a
- 31:41quick note to let you know how much I enjoy your program. I get
- 31:45the podcast on iTunes. I haven't been listening all the long, but I'm
- 31:48hooked and still a loyal supporter. I have a real problem trying to pick
- 31:53a favorite. I like most all of the programs. I also really enjoy
- 31:59your commentary. They're very informative. Well, thanks so much, Kevin.
- 32:04We also have an email from Joe, who writes great stuff. Thanks.
- 32:10Stumbled on this app for my kindle. I'm a huge fan of noir,
- 32:15collecting the all good ones. Not surprisingly, those of Raymond Chandler rate the
- 32:21highest. The guy that does Philip Marlow on your show, well he's Philip
- 32:25Marlow. Couldn't find a better act to portray fiction's most popular detective, with
- 32:30the possible exception of Sherlock Holmes. And I think that as well. And
- 32:36it's probably that case when you look at everyone who has portrayed Marlow in film
- 32:42and on television. I think Gerald Moore has close to the best identification with
- 32:49the character, and that's just through the power of voice and characterization, as
- 32:53well as just the solid production here that makes this series so good week in
- 33:00and week out. And then we have a few comments regarding our fifteen hundred
- 33:05and eight episodes. Special are Candy Mattson played again? Adam Laurie says,
- 33:12thanks Adam for replaying that. I don't remember hearing it the first time through,
- 33:19but it definitely has made me decide to try to sift back through this
- 33:22app to the Candy Mattson shows and listen to them again, or do I
- 33:25need to go to the website and download them from there. Well, you
- 33:29can actually do either one. If you have the app, you can go
- 33:32to the top and search for Candy Matson. If you don't have the app,
- 33:37you can just go to archives dot Great Detectives dot net and download all
- 33:43the shows. Brian comments are regarding the photo we have for Candy Mattson says
- 33:51I would have never pictured Candy looking like that. Love the show. Well,
- 33:55thanks so much, Brian, And if you've looked at the picture we
- 33:59have on a web say for Candy Matson, it doesn't look like I think
- 34:01any of us would imagine Candy Matson. It is, however, the best
- 34:07picture I can find for Natalie Masters. Unfortunately, it's taken from an episode
- 34:15of The Lone Ranger, so it doesn't quite go yeah but yeah. It
- 34:23doesn't match my imagination either, but it's the best we have until we find
- 34:27something different. Appreciate you sharing. And then a couple comments. Bobby Lee
- 34:31says first time listening to her, love it, and Phoenix says, Candy
- 34:37Matson is one of my all time favorite detectives. Well, thanks so much,
- 34:42and we definitely enjoy Candy Matson. It's too bad only fourteen episodes survived.
- 34:47All of these. You can listen to archives dot Great Detectives dott just
- 34:52click on the Candy Matson length. But that will actually do it for today,
- 34:59we will. We'll be back tomorrow with Nick Carter and then join us
- 35:02again next Wednesday for another episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlowe. In the
- 35:07meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net, follow
