James Leutze, the transformative chancellor of UNC Wilmington who led the university through explosive growth and historic milestones, has passed away at 90. Under his visionary leadership, student enrollment surged by 3,600+, the endowment exploded from $5M to $21M, and the operating budget doubled—while also launching the university’s first NCAA men’s basketball tournament appearance.
