- 0:00why has RV travel become so important over the last several years?
- 0:04Some of the answers may surprise you.
- 0:07On today's episode, we have Melody and Kurt from RV plus three.
- 0:11Kurt, why did you decide to travel by rv?
- 0:16Well, I spent about four years watching YouTubers do it before I was able to convince her to get into it.
- 0:23Four years it took.
- 0:24Okay.
- 0:25Yeah.
- 0:25I was, uh, watching, she had her own business.
- 0:28I was the stay at home dad, so I was sitting around with a infant and toddler watching all these guys travel all over and have all these adventures, and I'm like, that looks like fun.
- 0:39Okay, well, we are gonna get into that today.
- 0:42On today's episode, my guests are going to cover.
- 0:45RVing.
- 0:46So whether that is full-time like they are, whether you're thinking about doing it part-time, you're a weekender or you're just thinking about it, or those people that are really curious about RVing.
- 0:57We're also gonna talk about why travel is so important for us, uh, incredible places and experiences you have had, as well as some RV travel tips like planning.
- 1:10Now that's a. Full on episode, so we're gonna have to try and get as much as possible into this.
- 1:16For those of you who don't know, I am Patti Hunt, and I traveled four years, no, three and a half years.
- 1:22I started four years ago full-time in my rv.
- 1:25I've done some international travel.
- 1:28I am right now off the road and travel by plane and car and train.
- 1:35I want to go.
- 1:36On a river cruise, just experience different types of travel.
- 1:40But the RV travel experience is really interesting, really exciting things that I did not expect.
- 1:48This podcast was created to inspire you to travel whatever mode of travel, whether you go close to home or far away.
- 1:58That is the mission of this.
- 2:00Podcast.
- 2:01It's to inspire you to get out and travel right?
- 2:06We're gonna talk about why that's important.
- 2:08So this is Melody and Kurt Clayton of RV plus three.
- 2:12Go check them out on social media.
- 2:15We'll talk about your social media and where to find you.
- 2:17YouTube.
- 2:19And you've been full-time RVers for four years, so a little longer than I was.
- 2:23You travel with your son Marcus, who is now 14, right?
- 2:2715 next month, 15 next month.
- 2:30Hard to keep track.
- 2:30I know.
- 2:30He's way taller than me.
- 2:32Almost as tall as you now.
- 2:34And he has had some incredible experience as a kid traveling in an rv.
- 2:39Um, so how many states have you been to Melody, do you know?
- 2:44I don't, I haven't kept track.
- 2:45Listen, you gotta get the board.
- 2:47Gotta get the, I got the board back.
- 2:49I don't know.
- 2:49You have a kid trip, do you?
- 2:50Well, we haven't updated it in a while.
- 2:51We haven't updated it in a while.
- 2:53Do you have a guess?
- 2:54So why don't you take a guess and then we'll come back and post on social media with the actual answer, maybe a guess.
- 3:0018.
- 3:0118 states.
- 3:02And how about you?
- 3:03What do you think?
- 3:04You think more or less?
- 3:06Um, I, I say maybe 20. 20. Okay.
- 3:10So you guys are going to fill the map in.
- 3:13Okay.
- 3:13And you're gonna let me know and we'll post that on social media.
- 3:15How many states it was for Dan and I, we were up to about 28.
- 3:20But there's also, when do you count this state?
- 3:22So we could talk about that in a little bit.
- 3:24National Parks.
- 3:25Do you know how many, I'm just putting you guys on the spot.
- 3:28Five.
- 3:29Five National Parks.
- 3:30Yeah.
- 3:30Not too many.
- 3:31Yeah.
- 3:31Not too many, not your thing.
- 3:33Well it's not high on our bucket list right now because our rig is so big we can't fit into national parks.
- 3:38Right, okay.
- 3:38And that's the big thing about traveling full time in a 43 foot RV is you have to find parks near the national parks.
- 3:44Okay.
- 3:44And we're gonna talk about some of that because we are gonna talk about sorta, I say sorta 'cause we're gonna talk a little bit about choosing the RV that might be right for you.
- 3:54Depending on what you need to do and what you're saying is with a 43 foot rv, you can't go into the national parks for the most part, so we'll talk about that.
- 4:02Now, I gotta say, these guys were instrumental in helping build my last podcast, which was the RV Life Podcast.
- 4:12They helped with social media and were the self-proclaimed producers.
- 4:18Truth be told, they did help produce that show.
- 4:22For those of you who don't know, they, they helped get it into the top 3% of all podcasts worldwide.
- 4:28And our mission was to make sure people were inspired to travel, had the information they needed to, to go out and rv.
- 4:35And so when Kurt came up with the idea that we were going to do a coffee chat, we were gonna sit down with our coffee and chat, I said, okay, he's the producer.
- 4:46He's decided to produce this show.
- 4:48And so here we are now, we were gonna be outside.
- 4:51But it is a rainy day, as you can see.
- 4:54I am.
- 4:54We are in Circle M Campground, and I'm staying in a cabin, which is a story that I'll talk about another time.
- 5:02Let's jump into it, Kurt.
- 5:05Four years ago, let's think back to four years ago.
- 5:08You said you were sitting around with an infant well before that, but it was four years ago when you convinced Melanie.
- 5:16To sell the house and the business and go in an rv.
- 5:21What did that conversation look like?
- 5:23How'd that go?
- 5:25Uh, she had a lot of stipulations, I should say.
- 5:28Um, one of the big ones is financially how to make it work.
- 5:32Um.
- 5:33You know, I'm a disabled vet. I have the disability income, you know, how much, how much is it gonna cost?
- 5:38How are we gonna afford doing it?
- 5:39You know, using things like thousand trails memberships and buying one right off the bat, we actually bought coast to coast as well.
- 5:46Yep.
- 5:46So being able to go places and not break the bank, trying to stay, 'cause we're living in it.
- 5:51This isn't a vacation for us.
- 5:53We're actually living full time.
- 5:55Okay.
- 5:55And so you brought up a number of things and again.
- 5:58I have a computer in front of me.
- 5:59I just have some brief points.
- 6:01So we're gonna be going in many different directions on this.
- 6:05First of all, you talked about being prepared, which I was not.
- 6:08I spent about three months and went out and got on the road.
- 6:12I don't recommend that approach 'cause we got out on the road and realized we couldn't afford to be in campgrounds, but we are thousand trust members.
- 6:19This is a thousand trust campground.
- 6:22Talk a little bit about that to help our listeners.
- 6:25One of you, whoever wants to talk, or both of you.
- 6:28On having certain memberships to help with campground cos Um, well I was the one watching all the YouTubers out there doing it, the big ones, you know, KYD, less junk and, uh, you know, changing Lanes.
- 6:39Ev I watched a lot of YouTube videos before we got started and actually that kind of what led into also being prepared and we'll touch on that here in a few.
- 6:47Um, but the Thousand Trails membership, we decided to buy the biggest and best package that they had.
- 6:54The adventure, you know, park to part.
- 6:57Uh, six month reservation window for regular tt and, you know, uh, 90 days for the encore parks, which is what makes it feasible.
- 7:06Without it, you're gonna be dumping 50 at a very minimum to 120 a night in a lot of campgrounds with a thousand trails.
- 7:14They have a lot of good locations near a lot of good areas and it works.
- 7:19But we also supplemented it with a coast to coast, which has a lot of parks up in Michigan, um, where TT doesn't really have anything.
- 7:26Right.
- 7:26So we're able to go in a lot of other areas that aren't just limited to the TT parks.
- 7:31Okay.
- 7:32And like you guys, I also, wait, I've waited six months and then bought the Thousand Trust membership, and I always say my biggest mistake was.
- 7:41Not buying it sooner because the money I wasted, like you said, trying to find a campground for 40 or $50 a night was difficult at best.
- 7:50But when you think 40 or $50 a night, $50 times, 30 nights, that's $1,500 a month.
- 7:56Am I doing my math right?
- 7:57That's a lot of money that we didn't have.
- 8:00So, thousand trails.
- 8:01I, I'm just gonna say they have changed all of their membership, all of them.
- 8:06And anybody that's interested in hearing more about that, there is a link in the show notes.
- 8:10Sharon and Warren are our membership specialists that can help answer all of your questions.
- 8:17They're people that we know love and trust, so we'll.
- 8:20We'll go on from there because memberships are something that, depending on how you're traveling, what kind of travel you want to do, where you want to go, the membership really depends.
- 8:31And I know with the new membership.
- 8:33Even if you're doing it part-time, it still pays.
- 8:36Okay.
- 8:36So you've got the membership down.
- 8:38Good for you.
- 8:38Planning that beforehand.
- 8:40Um, let's talk a little bit, okay, so now here you are in a house.
- 8:44You sold the house, you had a house, you sold it after fully remodeling it for of course, right?
- 8:50So that was another catch is I just finished helping get the house remodeled, uh, you know, full paint, new flooring, everything.
- 8:57And it was beautiful.
- 8:58It looked gorgeous.
- 8:59Yeah, it was gorgeous.
- 9:00But the market was there.
- 9:02During COVID to sell, and we got way more than we paid for it.
- 9:07And it was kind of one of those things that's like, all right, well that'll help pay for the truck, paid for almost a hundred thousand dollars truck in cash.
- 9:14So that's one less payment we're gonna have on the road.
- 9:16The thousand Trails membership pay for in cash, one less payment.
- 9:19We have to worry about just the yearly dues, which aren't bad at all.
- 9:22Right?
- 9:23And so one of the things to talk about is budgeting.
- 9:27People ask all the time.
- 9:29What's cheaper, what's less expensive A house or living in an rv.
- 9:34And I always say it depends.
- 9:36Yeah, it depends.
- 9:37They have a, you have a dually and a fifth wheel.
- 9:40It's new.
- 9:41It was new, correct.
- 9:42Yes.
- 9:42We, my husband and I had a old, uh, class A, so it really depends where you're coming from and what kind of r you're going into.
- 9:54But certainly finances are something to consider.
- 9:57And just know that it's gonna cost more than you think it is.
- 10:01You have to factor in repairs that you find out a planned, all of that stuff.
- 10:06And that probably is a whole episode conversation itself.
- 10:11Anybody that wants to hear more about financing being on the road, and is it less expensive than a house and how do I figure out finance?
- 10:18We'll come back and do another episode on that.
- 10:20Let us know in the comments.
- 10:22So that, that's of interest.
- 10:23That's a long episode.
- 10:25That's a long, long episode.
- 10:26Just right there of, yeah, probably mapping out if this, then this, you know, if we lived in a house in Las Vegas, it was a four bedroom, three and a half bath.
- 10:37The walk-in closet was as big as my rv, um, hot tub in a pool.
- 10:42So, you know that.
- 10:44Costs are pretty Penny being in Las Vegas?
- 10:47Well, you look at your travels and I think our first year we did 8,000 miles.
- 10:50Mm-hmm.
- 10:51And that was during COVID and fuel prices were five, $5 a gallon.
- 10:54So it added up real quick and we had to reevaluate, all right, how far do we want to go?
- 10:59Where do we wanna stay?
- 11:00How long are we gonna be there for?
- 11:02Because the, uh, just in fuel cost alone, it can surprise you out of the blue, but then you run into programs like open roads.
- 11:08Yep.
- 11:08Let's talk about that.
- 11:09Okay.
- 11:10So that's another great point.
- 11:11And again, this is not on.
- 11:13This list.
- 11:14We are really wingy it.
- 11:15We are really having a coffee cup and I'm letting Kurt take some leeway here.
- 11:21Um, but it's a good point because the next big expense would be your fuel co cost.
- 11:26Your dually is a diesel.
- 11:28My RV was a diesel.
- 11:3010 miles to the gallon.
- 11:31Yeah.
- 11:32We always lie to ourselves and say it's like 12.
- 11:35But it's really, ours was seven or eight, but we said Ted, just to make us feel better.
- 11:40Um, and that's just the towing side of it.
- 11:42When you disconnect, you know, for us, you know, we didn't have a tow behind vehicle or you know, a chase vehicle.
- 11:46In the case of some fifth wheel, uh, people, you know, they use a, have a whole separate vehicle just for running around and we decided against that route and well, even not towing, I'm only getting 15 if I'm having a good day.
- 11:58Right?
- 11:58So the dually gets 15.
- 12:00Okay, so let's talk about open roads, because again, this is a consideration whether you're gas or diesel, to have programs that'll, you know, save you money.
- 12:09Open Road is one of those programs.
- 12:12Can you talk a little bit about it?
- 12:14Let you talk about it.
- 12:15Well, I saw it on a YouTuber's channel.
- 12:17That was one of the things.
- 12:18It's like I, I'm a prepared person.
- 12:20I like to be prepared for just about any eventuality.
- 12:23And I over plan, definitely over plan, spend way too much time doing it, checking the routes four times.
- 12:29Is there any bridges?
- 12:30Is, you know, we're gonna talk about that in a minute.
- 12:32Yeah.
- 12:33Let's talk about fuel costs and how Oprah burn.
- 12:35So saved you money.
- 12:36Um, it's a free to join program.
- 12:40Um, and you basically get a fleet.
- 12:43Style discount like the truck drivers get.
- 12:45So you're not paying the pump price.
- 12:47And that can range anywhere from 15 cents all the way to a dollar or even more per gallon off.
- 12:53Right?
- 12:54And that makes a big difference when you're filling up, uh, even my 50 gallon tank, you know, a class a's they've got, what, 200 gallon tanks?
- 13:01Uh, it just cost us three plus a hundred dollars to fill it up.
- 13:05So whatever.
- 13:06I don't even remember, oh my gosh, how many gallons it was, but it was a lot.
- 13:09That's a lot.
- 13:10Okay, I'm gonna go back.
- 13:11So a program like Open Roads, there are some other programs out there.
- 13:16Do your research like mm-hmm.
- 13:18Kurt has done, what's really nice now is if there's some program out there, I just ask Kurt.
- 13:23I don't have to do my research.
- 13:24I know he's done it, but Open Roads is a great program.
- 13:28I'm also gonna add on that Open Roads over the last two years has a toll pass.
- 13:35For those interstates that you need a toll pass and it covers all 48 states.
- 13:41That's called Innovative toll Solutions.
- 13:44But they have the VIP, which include, and they have the VIP, which includes, we're gonna put all this information in the show notes, but I wanna ask you, melody.
- 13:51Yeah.
- 13:51He came, we haven't heard from you yet.
- 13:53He came to you, you're off working.
- 13:56He came to you and said.
- 13:58Yeah, he, well, he had been talking about it for a while, so it wasn't something new.
- 14:02You know, we watched the videos together, but it was kinda like our son with COVID started being homeschooled.
- 14:08We saw he did so much better.
- 14:10He, he just didn't do good in school, so, okay.
- 14:12Our oldest was going off to the Air Force, and so it was like, well, the prices are, the, the houses are really good right now.
- 14:22So I'm like, sell me on it.
- 14:24Break it down for me.
- 14:24I'm not doing this without you breaking it down.
- 14:27And he, you know, he broke it down.
- 14:28He was like, Hey, look, if, if we did a thousand trails, that'll save us a lot of nights.
- 14:33And he kinda showed me what normal nights cost versus doing a package like a thousand trails.
- 14:37I was like, okay, that makes sense.
- 14:38And he's like, they got programs for helping let's saving on fuel.
- 14:41Okay, great.
- 14:42And he just broke it down.
- 14:43He showed me a lot of stuff and I was like, okay.
- 14:47So from the time you said yes to him Yeah.
- 14:50Until you sold the house.
- 14:53Packed it up.
- 14:53We're gonna talk a little bit about downsizing.
- 14:56Again, that's a whole topic in itself, but we're gonna talk a little bit about downsizing.
- 15:01From the time you said yes till you got the RV and got in and hit the road, how much time was there?
- 15:08Eight months, probably.
- 15:10Yeah, because we had to, to get finish, getting the house fixed up and then, then we had to get it sold and then, then after that.
- 15:22We were helping our son get off to the Air Force, our oldest cj.
- 15:26So we were actually, once we sold the house, we were living in our bumper pole.
- 15:30We had a 26 foot forest river, um, mini light.
- 15:35Yep.
- 15:36And we were living in that.
- 15:38So we lived in an RV park for several months and then we got our oldest off to the Air Force, and then we officially left.
- 15:47You know, not just living in the rv, but actually traveling and living.
- 15:51I went to see him in Texas for his graduation of basic.
- 15:55Wow.
- 15:55So it gives you another really great part of R being, whether it's a bumper pole, travel trailer, a van, it gives you that opportunity to go somewhere and stay in a campground, not be in a hotel.
- 16:08Okay.
- 16:09Well this was our third rv.
- 16:10This was our third RVR.
- 16:12So, so you weren't new to it?
- 16:14Not fully, because as I've gotten older, I was in my forties.
- 16:18I've, you know, got health issues and.
- 16:20Tent camping, just wasn't, couldn't do it anymore.
- 16:23I'm like, I need a bed.
- 16:25You know, a place to lay down, comfy.
- 16:27And so that's kind of what started us is like, all right, we bought a 30 foot before the Rockwood and had a bunk house and we took the kids out on the weekends and did some summer trips with it.
- 16:37So we we're familiar with rv, but still newbies by any means.
- 16:40There was mistakes made.
- 16:42Stakes are always going to be made downright screw ups too.
- 16:46Yeah.
- 16:46I could say something else, but we don't, we don't wanna say that on this podcast, but, so do you recommend people maybe rent an rv, maybe come into a campground?
- 16:59So, my experience, let's go back a little bit.
- 17:00My experience with camping was, I think I spent maybe 10 nights in a tent.
- 17:07Mm-hmm.
- 17:07So it was a weekend, I was in a tent night, one.
- 17:11It not only rained, it poured torrential downpour with full on lightning middle of the night.
- 17:17Of course I have to go to the bathroom.
- 17:19That was my experience.
- 17:21Night two.
- 17:22Thankfully, somebody in the campground had a cabin.
- 17:24They let us stay 'cause I was ready to pack up and go home.
- 17:26That was my experience with tank camping.
- 17:29Now, I did have a lot of great memories, meeting people, community.
- 17:33I loved that part of it, but only saw Ted camping or somebody buying an RV as the option.
- 17:39And at that time the RV wasn't a consideration.
- 17:43My RV experience was seven nights, two different trips in an rv, you know, just going on what was like a vacation.
- 17:51So you guys had some experience.
- 17:53What do you recommend?
- 17:54Do you recommend people try the campground experience, maybe renting an rv?
- 18:00What are your thought?
- 18:00I think renting an rv.
- 18:02Would be good if, if you've never done it, just as a, let's get out there and try it.
- 18:06'cause you don't wanna sell everything and then go, oh, I really cannot live in 200 some odd square feet.
- 18:13I think it'd be good.
- 18:14Try a couple trips and then if you like it, there you go.
- 18:17Or buy a small bumper pull or something and take it for weekends for a bit.
- 18:21Get your feet in the water if you really like it, that we can take test a camp ground.
- 18:24You can test going out on BLM Lamb, you know, try a few things.
- 18:30Yeah.
- 18:30'cause we did.
- 18:30Everything from campgrounds to really off-road camping with the little bumper pool.
- 18:36Yeah.
- 18:37Um, when we got the short one, it was like, oh, okay, so we can take this all the way up in the mountains here and not necessarily wasn't meant for those off-road conditions, which I learned relatively quickly.
- 18:47That's again, nowhere.
- 18:48You can take your r.
- 18:48It's really important.
- 18:52Yeah.
- 18:52So, and again, let's talk a little bit about trip planning.
- 18:56We, you brought up going out to the mountains, BLM land.
- 19:00Let's talk about what that is, the type of, we are going in all kinds of directions, but the type of things when you set out, let's just use you guys as, as an example, when you set out in the rv, you were headed to Texas because CJ was going in the military, the Air Force.
- 19:18So was that like the first kind of trip?
- 19:20The fir What was the plan?
- 19:21Because you're the planner.
- 19:22We gotta back up a little bit.
- 19:24Oh, okay.
- 19:25There's a, there's a small Trump of story.
- 19:26He story, yeah.
- 19:28Who's the producer here?
- 19:29No, right in a second.
- 19:31I'm sorry.
- 19:32Both her and I have had cancer.
- 19:33Mm-hmm.
- 19:33And we're cancer survivors.
- 19:35We've gotten through it and, uh, during that time period as well, my mother, uh, had health issues and concerns that popped up and it was, uh, you know, we only got to see 'em once a year.
- 19:44They'd have to fly all the way out to Arizona where we were.
- 19:48When her health deteriorated, she couldn't fly anymore.
- 19:50Um, so one of the trips was we took the little bumper pole during, well before we decided to do a full house sale.
- 19:59And then, uh, we were headed, uh, we took it and visited them in Missouri where they're from and visited her family, uh, that has place up in Iowa.
- 20:07And uh, that was one of the kickoffs is being able to go and visit family.
- 20:11Yep.
- 20:12It was a lot harder to do.
- 20:14In the house and it's like, okay, we get to see you for a week or maybe two weeks if we're lucky for one every year.
- 20:20Um, and so it's like, well, we can work from the road.
- 20:23We can do different things and travel and see, and we got to go see my mom before she passed.
- 20:28And that was one of the kickers that when we were on that same trip is when we jumped to the 43 foot fifth wheel.
- 20:33I'd already had the bumper pull.
- 20:35Okay.
- 20:36And we were going through Texas and we found a rig that.
- 20:38We'd looked at for years and checked out the different model years and everything, and finally was able to make a deal on it.
- 20:44We got that back to, and my mom passed during that time period of us getting the house sold.
- 20:50So it was kind of, uh, heartbreaking in that respect that I lost my mom before I could go out and do more visits to her.
- 20:58Right.
- 20:59And that just goes to show life is short.
- 21:01Mm-hmm.
- 21:01You don't know what's gonna happen.
- 21:04Do you want to wait?
- 21:05Right.
- 21:05Yeah.
- 21:05And this is the big reason.
- 21:07For the podcast because that has been the, um, inspiration is that life is short and you don't know, there's no, you hear about people that retired 65 or 72, whatever it is now, and they, six months later they pass away.
- 21:25People who know my story know that Dan became in a year and a half ago and is now in full-time nursing care.
- 21:33Didn't see that coming, so, mm-hmm.
- 21:35Go out and do the things.
- 21:36Now caution, because it does not mean you should sell everything.
- 21:40It does not mean you should like get off of this episode and convince your spouse to go full-time in an rv.
- 21:48But it does mean to sit down and really think about what you want to do.
- 21:52Yeah.
- 21:52So let's talk about the trips you wanted to visit family.
- 21:56That was a big thing for you.
- 21:57It was.
- 21:58It was a big deal for me When you, it came to planning.
- 22:02When it came to trip planning.
- 22:04You kind of, in the first year you said you did 8,000 miles.
- 22:07That's relatively slow for RVs, full-time RVs, right?
- 22:12Is that relatively slow, fast?
- 22:14Kind of fast?
- 22:15Fast.
- 22:15I mean, we, we were, we were moving in either bug dials, we were moving quite a bit and only staying in a place for a week or two weeks at a time.
- 22:23Okay.
- 22:23Because, uh, when we got the big rv and, uh, our oldest boy at that time was literally heading off to basic training.
- 22:32And we were finishing everything up, the business sale and everything.
- 22:35It's like, okay, well we hit the road.
- 22:36I even forgot we had the thousand Trails membership.
- 22:38Oh, we pulled into a rest stop in nowhere Texas.
- 22:41And I'm like, where are we gonna stay tonight?
- 22:43Ah.
- 22:43And I'm like, it's like the planner didn't plan that one.
- 22:46Not the first trip.
- 22:47I was like, let's get to San Antonio and get there so we could be there for his graduation.
- 22:52And I didn't even think about, you know, how busy campgrounds in the San Antonio area was gonna be.
- 22:57And it's like, okay, wait, there's a TT park near there.
- 23:00We can drive in.
- 23:01And we stayed there for a few.
- 23:02But when he actually had his graduation, we picked up a park near, uh, what SeaWorld down there?
- 23:07Yeah.
- 23:08Somewhere, somewhere near SeaWorld.
- 23:09And was able to bring him back to the rv, get him off base for a little bit.
- 23:14'cause he still had to do his primary training after that.
- 23:16He, that was his basic right.
- 23:18And after that it's like, alright, I wanted to make this basic training.
- 23:21Um, that was the important one to me.
- 23:23'cause I'd been through it myself.
- 23:25I'm ex-military.
- 23:26So I know how nice it is to have family show up at your graduation there.
- 23:30Right?
- 23:31Right.
- 23:32And so again, planning is all great.
- 23:35We've all done it where we're like, oh, something fell through.
- 23:38Something didn't work.
- 23:39Um, as much planning as you could do.
- 23:41But also even within the planning, there's sometimes those things that come up that are fun, exciting, didn't expect it.
- 23:50I had that happen all the time with me.
- 23:52We set out, so we spent a month.
- 23:55Um, 15 miles from the house that we were in.
- 23:58I wanted to get the RV set up.
- 23:59I just wanted time when we spent a month in Lake Mead and then we had this whole plan for two or three months, like, oh, I have to plan this.
- 24:07I'm not, I should say I was not a spontaneous person.
- 24:12Yeah.
- 24:12So the idea of rv great, but we're gonna plan things.
- 24:16We're gonna schedule this.
- 24:17I'm gonna have, you know, camp Gros Reserve that went out the window very quickly, and now I weigh.
- 24:23I'm much better at flying by the seat of my pants now.
- 24:26Um, but we had this plan of where we were gonna go the day before we were taking off.
- 24:32Somebody called us that we were friendly with and said, uh, there's a Model T Ford rally, and if you get here in two days instead of four or five, four days, you could join us in that rally.
- 24:46And Dan was like, oh yeah, we gotta do this.
- 24:48So everything from there changed.
- 24:50Yeah.
- 24:50And that's where I think I knew.
- 24:52Planning was great, but being flexible.
- 24:55Go ahead you and say something.
- 24:55We plan a lot of our stuff out really far out, but we're always open to change.
- 24:59Last year we were supposed to be going to Louisiana.
- 25:02Never been so go Texas to, you know, to Louisiana.
- 25:07We wanna go do Mardi Gra, check it out.
- 25:09Well then we found out that they're gonna have a lunar clipse and one of the best places.
- 25:12Solar eclipse.
- 25:12Solar eclipse, yes.
- 25:13Thank you.
- 25:13Solar eclipse.
- 25:14One of the best place to see it was in Texas and we had a bunch of friends staying at a thousand trails Campgrounds.
- 25:20We're like, okay, well let's detour.
- 25:21We canceled Louisiana, Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee.
- 25:26Yep.
- 25:27Because we were gonna go up and back to Missouri and visit my dad afterwards, and we wound up just extending and staying in Texas for the entire eclipse.
- 25:34But the nice thing is also is we made new friends that we're still really good friends with.
- 25:39So it's just funny how.
- 25:42Things work out how things work out.
- 25:43Yeah, and, and again, for those people, planning is a good idea.
- 25:49Having an idea of where you wanna go, what you want to do.
- 25:52I always recommend that whoever is traveling, so whether it's couple, whether you're solo, whether you have a kid or kids with, you kind of sit down and you know, what are the types of things you want to do and see, great to have that, great to have the list and be flexible, things that come up.
- 26:08So planning's a great idea.
- 26:11Being flexible.
- 26:11Good.
- 26:12Let's talk about community, and it's one of the reasons I love being in campgrounds.
- 26:19And while even though I don't have the RV anymore, I stay in cabins.
- 26:23I've stayed in a yur, I've stayed in a retro rv.
- 26:25I'm planning on renting an rv'cause I do want to stay in a fifth wheel so I could rent one.
- 26:30They'll bring it to the site, they'll set it up.
- 26:33Actually just talking to somebody from the company.
- 26:35It's called Fireside RV Rental.
- 26:38They'll bring it out.
- 26:40Do everything you need.
- 26:41I don't know if they set up the tanks.
- 26:43I would imagine they do the black and gray tanks.
- 26:45They would because a lot of people don't know how to.
- 26:47I would hope so.
- 26:48I figured Bring it out.
- 26:49I'll have to check that.
- 26:49I would imagine you set it all up so you had that experience.
- 26:53It's also a good way to decide which RV might work for you in your family or whoever you're with.
- 27:00Okay.
- 27:01Well, your first RV isn't your last.
- 27:03Your first RV is usually not your glasses.
- 27:05Yeah, that's usually the case.
- 27:07We've even looked at changing after four years of, uh, you know, maybe to a toy haul or something different, you know, but it's kinda like, well, we spent four years fixing up the rig and getting it to exactly what we want.
- 27:17It's like, do we want switch?
- 27:19Except now you have a kid that's what, over six foot?
- 27:22No, not yet.
- 27:22But he will be, he's gonna be, I, I look up to him like, and he's 14, almost 15.
- 27:28That was part of our planning is.
- 27:30I crawled up in the bunk room where he could sleep and if I could fit, I knew he could.
- 27:34So I'm 6 4, 6 5.
- 27:36So it's bigger than I think it is.
- 27:38It's long.
- 27:38Yeah.
- 27:38Okay.
- 27:39It's long.
- 27:39It could fit probably someone's six.
- 27:41Six.
- 27:41Yeah.
- 27:42Okay.
- 27:42Just so people know what we're talking about in a fifth wheel, and you could Google pictures or I'll remember and just take some pictures.
- 27:48Um, when you walk into the fifth wheel, you're in the kitchen living room area.
- 27:53What's nice about a fifth wheel is it does feel more like a living space where the class A just.
- 27:59You're, you're in a, it does feel more like an RV depending on the kind of class that you have.
- 28:05But then you go up steps and there's steps to a loft.
- 28:08Where Marcus's bedroom is, we have a minimum.
- 28:11So, yeah.
- 28:11Um, there's no windows.
- 28:13It's just this little cave-like area that, and he likes, so you have to figure out what your kid likes.
- 28:20Um, okay, so let's talk about the, the campground.
- 28:24What's great about being in a campground?
- 28:26Why a campground?
- 28:27Why, why?
- 28:29You know, didn't you travel in some other way?
- 28:33I'll let you take it.
- 28:34Well, I mean, we like the campgrounds because usually there's lots of kids.
- 28:39Um, Marcus will have, we'll find friends, usually full-time families on the road.
- 28:43You know, you look for a little sciences, full-time families on the side.
- 28:46You'll say, oh, okay.
- 28:47They most likely have kids and, you know, he'll find someone to play with us.
- 28:51The nice thing about RV kids, they, they are very open to other kids and they're like, hi.
- 28:56And then they go play.
- 28:57Um, I like campgrounds.
- 29:00Um, I don't know.
- 29:01I just like, 'cause you meet a lot of people that you see, especially a thousand trails.
- 29:04You see a lot of the same people over and over and it's nice because you can meet up with friends, but there's lots of really nice campgrounds.
- 29:10You like full hookups.
- 29:11I like full hookups.
- 29:12She's not a boondock.
- 29:13Alright, so let's talk about a couple things.
- 29:15First of all, full-time families is a group for people who are full-time with their families.
- 29:21Mm-hmm.
- 29:21They do events together and get together and.
- 29:24You could just Google full-time families.
- 29:26I'll put it in the show notes for you.
- 29:28Um, but that is a great group with kids.
- 29:31And you said one of the things you like is there are a lot of kids I've traveled and once in a while have had a grandkid with, so I don't have kids and I can go off and, and you know, do my thing.
- 29:42There's usually something for every one.
- 29:45Mm-hmm.
- 29:46What else besides, now she's saying full hookups.
- 29:48For those of you who haven't RV yet, that means that you have sewer, so you're.
- 29:54Black and gray tanks are going into the sewer.
- 29:56You don't have to worry about your tanks filling up.
- 29:59You have water and you have electric, and that could be 30 or 50 amp electric depending on what your RV needs.
- 30:06So just a very basic, if I, I'm sure I missed a lot of things on that, but to give people basic, so you like the idea of full hookups?
- 30:13I stayed with them a couple weeks ago, and when I went to get in the shower, I had to think about, oh, I could actually take a real shower.
- 30:22They were on full hookup.
- 30:23If you're not on full hookup, so you're using your tank water and your tanks is where your.
- 30:30The holding tank is where your water goes from the shower.
- 30:33Then you have to take quicker showers.
- 30:34So I know I can take a good shower.
- 30:37Um, so thanks for letting me stay here.
- 30:38That's the nice thing about the fifth wheel too, 'cause there's a pullout couch.
- 30:42Mm-hmm.
- 30:42I was nice and comfy.
- 30:43I would serve coffee in the morning with love our coffee.
- 30:47It was great.
- 30:47So, you know, maybe find a friend who has an RV that you could just go hang out with.
- 30:53Okay.
- 30:54What else about the campground experience as opposed to, you know, you've been to resort type places, like hotels that are resorts that have some amenities.
- 31:05What makes a campground experience more appealing for you guys?
- 31:09I gotta just a quick one.
- 31:10Okay.
- 31:10Go wherever I go.
- 31:12I have my bed with me.
- 31:14Oh.
- 31:14I hate hotel beds.
- 31:15Oh.
- 31:15I've maybe been in one hotel in my entire life.
- 31:17I had a good bed.
- 31:18In it.
- 31:19Wow, that's a good one.
- 31:20So that's a big one for me.
- 31:21Yes.
- 31:21And you have all your stuff.
- 31:23Yes.
- 31:23You have all your stuff with you.
- 31:24Yeah.
- 31:25Yeah.
- 31:25But campgrounds can offer, like here at.
- 31:28Um, circle N they have activities.
- 31:30Mm-hmm.
- 31:31Every weekend there are things going on.
- 31:33You could participate or not.
- 31:35They have a pool.
- 31:36They have a pool, indoor pool, and a hot tub.
- 31:39They have a mini golf that people love, they rave about.
- 31:42They have the, the campground, uh, the playground for kids.
- 31:45They have trails.
- 31:46They have a, actually a river.
- 31:48And I said it right this time, I always called it a lake, but a river that runs around the place and you put your tube in and you could spend an hour or two hours floating around when it's warm.
- 31:59Um, and those are things that you just, you're here, you meet people, you could walk outside the rv mm-hmm.
- 32:05And somebody walked by and.
- 32:06Have an hour conversation and you've met your new best friend.
- 32:09Yep.
- 32:10Right.
- 32:10I know you love that.
- 32:11Oh yeah.
- 32:11I love that.
- 32:12I love meeting new people.
- 32:13Well, being able to cook at home, not having to go to, to restaurants.
- 32:16Yeah.
- 32:16I mean, there is some draw to, you know, hotel travel and other, you know, even cruise ships and things like that.
- 32:21And I can see it for, you know, okay, a weekend you're going out special place.
- 32:25You know, they don't have RV campgrounds near some of them, but for all it's having your home with you.
- 32:31Yeah.
- 32:31Everything that you need.
- 32:32It's a very different experience that it's hard to explain if you've never done it.
- 32:36Yeah, it's very different.
- 32:38I feel like every, every campground's different with what they offer.
- 32:41So you can pick one, if you pick one in the mountains that you know, they, they offer certain things.
- 32:46You can pick one by the beach.
- 32:47I, I just like that you can, depending on what you're in the mood for, that's what you can book.
- 32:52You know, there's some right on the beach, you know, there's something beautiful places in the mountains, our favorites.
- 32:57One of our favorites is Shenandoah Crossing in Virginia.
- 33:01Yep.
- 33:01And I love it.
- 33:02They have horses there.
- 33:03Lots of horses.
- 33:05So if you have kids that are, or if you're an adult and you wanna ride, you can ride.
- 33:09Um, they have a beautiful lake there so you can, you know, you can walk, they even have hotels.
- 33:13So let's say you're in the rv, but your family wants to stay in the hotel.
- 33:17They have a hotel on site or say it's a resorts, right?
- 33:20Um, so I don't know, there's just so many great campgrounds.
- 33:24I, I, I do like boondocking once in a while, but.
- 33:27Our tanks aren't that big, so we can't go that long.
- 33:29So I think that makes a difference.
- 33:31Yeah.
- 33:31Well, let's talk about what boondocking is really quick.
- 33:34Do you wanna take that just quick for people who have no idea what we're talking about?
- 33:38Boondocking is, uh, filling up the fresh water tank with some water and going out to a place that has no hookups, no electric, no sewer, no water ducking and emptying your gray and black tank so that they are empty for the trip.
- 33:50Mm-hmm.
- 33:50And then, so when I first started out and I stayed at Lake Meat.
- 33:54I didn't know anything, so if you get nothing out of this, do your research.
- 33:59There are a lot of, you know, Google it chat, GPT, it, I don't care what you do.
- 34:05Listen to YouTubers.
- 34:06You do a lot of things on social media, like pick your people, do your research.
- 34:12So I, mm-hmm.
- 34:13We're going to lake meat.
- 34:15No big deal.
- 34:17There was, it was boo docking.
- 34:20For a month.
- 34:21That's a, that's a long time to move.
- 34:24We had to pack up the whole rv, go to the doctor station and take it up to the dump station, build the water and dump every five, four, or five days.
- 34:32Yeah.
- 34:33So I'd lived through that.
- 34:35Anything after that was, you know, resort living.
- 34:38When I could pull in, take a sh and you took quick showers, you turned the water off in between.
- 34:44Soaping military shower.
- 34:46Yeah.
- 34:46You put the bucket in the sink when you were washing dishes, so you could, you can't always do that.
- 34:51Pour it outside.
- 34:52There's some places at Lake Me.
- 34:54You weren't supposed to do that.
- 34:55Yeah, I was watering the trees.
- 34:59Um, so there were ways around things.
- 35:03Uh.
- 35:04Y. Yeah.
- 35:05You have to think about those things.
- 35:06Mm-hmm.
- 35:06When you're traveling, you have to think about those things.
- 35:09We'll go back to, let's talk a little bit about types of RVs.
- 35:13We've covered class a's they're the big bus, like drivable RVs.
- 35:18What is it in the drivable category?
- 35:20Drivable category, and then you have B, class B. I'm going to the alphabet camera bands.
- 35:27and you have Cs, which are bigger.
- 35:30It's smaller than a Class A, but bigger than a van.
- 35:33Okay.
- 35:34And And there's Super Cs.
- 35:35Super Cs.
- 35:36Yep.
- 35:36The highest, which I found out why people buy Super Cs because they, they're just bigger, they're heavier, they're more expensive.
- 35:44They tend to be, but they're for people who want, who have bigger loads.
- 35:48Like they're either pulling something that's heavier.
- 35:50So you can pull a full size pickup.
- 35:53A full size pickup.
- 35:53Okay, there you go.
- 35:54So it just depends on what you're doing with it.
- 35:57And then we move into the towables.
- 35:59Let you take those.
- 36:00'cause they're outta my, well, there's a lot of to, so you have the popups, travel trailers.
- 36:05Mm-hmm.
- 36:05Everybody jump in.
- 36:06Let's go a little little to big pop popups.
- 36:09Okay.
- 36:09Pop up again.
- 36:10He's producing the show.
- 36:11We're going little to big popups.
- 36:13Teardrops.
- 36:14Teardrops.
- 36:15Yep.
- 36:15Then your regular bumper pulse slash travel trailers.
- 36:18Mm-hmm.
- 36:19Then you get your big fifth wheels.
- 36:22Then you got the toy haulers, and then you can even go all the way into like the luxe category if you've got a couple hundred thousand to blow.
- 36:29Or more.
- 36:30Yeah.
- 36:30Or more.
- 36:30Mm-hmm.
- 36:31Okay.
- 36:31So the toy hauler is a fifth wheel.
- 36:34Some class A have a toy hauler garage, which it's like a garage, so you could park something in there.
- 36:40Motorcycles, golf cart, small car, golf carts, all kinds of things.
- 36:44So these are the basics for types of RVs.
- 36:48And we might miss some.
- 36:50I don't know.
- 36:50You're pretty thorough, so I'm not sure you did.
- 36:52Sorry.
- 36:52That's a, but I, you know, there, there's a lot.
- 36:55So different.
- 36:55There are a lot out there.
- 36:56Sorry if we missed something.
- 36:57Yeah.
- 36:57Oh yeah.
- 36:58But it's planning what will work for you and your family, how you wanna travel.
- 37:03Mm-hmm.
- 37:03Like where you wanna go.
- 37:04So you mentioned national parks, of which you've been to four or five you said, which I thought you would've been to a lot of them.
- 37:11Number of, number of national parks.
- 37:13I've been to Zero.
- 37:15So you're way ahead of me.
- 37:17Well, we just did the one up in, um, or Acadia.
- 37:19Acadia National Park.
- 37:21Absolutely.
- 37:21That was up in Maine, our first trip to Maine in four years.
- 37:24Okay.
- 37:24Mm-hmm.
- 37:25Uh, didn't do everything there.
- 37:26And that's the great thing.
- 37:27I don't, I want to go back, find more to do.
- 37:29We did Shenandoah National Park.
- 37:31Yep.
- 37:32Shenandoah.
- 37:33We did.
- 37:33So maybe again, you'll count them, you'll let us know we're posted on social media.
- 37:37Yeah.
- 37:37I have a book that, okay.
- 37:38They have books so you can get stamps.
- 37:40Okay.
- 37:40Put stamps in.
- 37:42Um, when we did the cake.
- 37:44Up in Cape Cod.
- 37:45I thought we did.
- 37:46Was that a national park?
- 37:47I thought it was, uh, national something shore or something.
- 37:51So we've been to a few, but it's, we're not just going hunting for National Park.
- 37:56Right.
- 37:56Some people they're gonna knock it off their list.
- 37:59We just hit on if we're in the area and they're, you know, we're like, oh, that looks cool to do.
- 38:03We'll go, well, there's some national parts that are great, and others that you're like, eh, it doesn't interest me that much.
- 38:07Yeah, and that's the thing too, is I think when you're planning, what kinds of things, we talked about it a little bit.
- 38:15What kinds of things now do you guys, I guess you talked to Marcus or the three of you, kind of get an idea of what kinds of things you want to do, where you want to go.
- 38:24How do you figure that all out?
- 38:26Well, part of his homeschooling is like going to see things like Gettysburg Valley, forge, Washington, dc um, all the forts and lighthouses and so many things.
- 38:36It's part of his homeschooling.
- 38:37Instead of reading about in a book, he actually gets to go out there and experience it firsthand and see it.
- 38:42That's cool.
- 38:43Yeah, so it's a completely different education.
- 38:46And that's the other thing.
- 38:47So now you have kids homeschooling.
- 38:49That's a whole nother conversation.
- 38:51So let's talk about that a little bit.
- 38:54When it comes to homeschooling, you don't have to know it all.
- 38:58The two of you.
- 38:59Yeah, and I try and tell people this all the time.
- 39:01I was a teacher for 20 years.
- 39:02I taught science.
- 39:03If you ask me to try and teach.
- 39:06Even algebra level.
- 39:08I'm out.
- 39:08I'm done.
- 39:09I, I'm not, I can't even help my kid with it, let alone teach it.
- 39:13But you guys, he, Marcus uses an online program mm-hmm.
- 39:16Right?
- 39:16That you recommend?
- 39:18What Do you know the name of it?
- 39:19You want to share it?
- 39:20We have the time for learning.
- 39:22So like he, because he just got into high school, they, they, they upped it.
- 39:26They changed it a little.
- 39:27And so it's definitely more for older kids.
- 39:31And so it's good because it's transitioning in him into, Hey, you've gotta write more.
- 39:36You've gotta think more.
- 39:37And I, I really like it.
- 39:38But it's nice because they have, you need to get this, this, and this and this done today.
- 39:44And when he gets done, he is like, I'm done.
- 39:46Can I, do you want me to do more or do you want me to call it done?
- 39:50So typically three or four hours he gets school knocked out and then he can do whatever for the rest of the day.
- 39:55Or if we've got things to do, he can go with us.
- 39:58And so it's nice he's not wasting time just sitting in the classroom.
- 40:03Repeating things over and over and over.
- 40:05He can just get it done and let's go do and do other things.
- 40:07And I think one of the nice things, and again, I was a teacher for 20 years, he could work at his own pace.
- 40:12Mm-hmm.
- 40:12He could do his own thing.
- 40:14You're encouraging, you know, the things that he could go see and actually be there, you know, from Philadelphia.
- 40:20So people going down to Independence Hall.
- 40:23Yeah, seeing the Liberty Bell instead of just reading something out of book book, different programs are gonna be helpful for different kids.
- 40:30Every kid is different.
- 40:31Yeah.
- 40:31I have three kids and they're totally different.
- 40:34So would finding what would work for you?
- 40:36There are tons of programs out there, right?
- 40:38There are tons.
- 40:38Yeah.
- 40:39I think it just depends on how your kid learns.
- 40:42Our oldest would've never been able to do homeschooling.
- 40:44He would've never made it.
- 40:47And our youngest is opposite.
- 40:48He does great with it.
- 40:49So I, I always just say, ask other parents.
- 40:52I mean, you'll hear so many.
- 40:54You can have a group of moms sitting there and they'll all have different things of how they teach their kids.
- 40:58Some do half books, half online, some I use this curriculum, this curriculum, this curriculum.
- 41:04And some are just strict, Hey, I just used this one.
- 41:06So you hear so many different ways to do it, which is nice.
- 41:10And depending on, you know, where you're located out of.
- 41:14They'll, you know what state you're residing in.
- 41:16They'll say, Hey, you gotta teach this, this, and this, but the rest is up to you.
- 41:20Right.
- 41:20Okay.
- 41:21And they, that's another thing is do your research on the state.
- 41:24That you reside in and what their requirements are?
- 41:28For homeschooling?
- 41:30Yes, as full-timers.
- 41:31A lot of the questions that come up that I guess at some other time we could cover is, you know, my address.
- 41:37How do you plan an address?
- 41:38We use a program called Escapees.
- 41:41I think you use the same?
- 41:43No, we use use right now we're in South Dakota, but we're gonna switch our residency to Florida.
- 41:47But is it Escapees?
- 41:48You go through, you go through a different programs?
- 41:50Dakota.
- 41:51Dakota Post.
- 41:52Oh, okay.
- 41:52So within your state?
- 41:53Mm-hmm.
- 41:54So what we're talking about is to get your mail if you are on the road full time to get your mail and your residency.
- 42:00Their company.
- 42:01Some states do it for me.
- 42:03We use a company called Escapees.
- 42:05There are different ones.
- 42:07There's a lot of information out there about them.
- 42:10You could go into a group and ask about the different people, like different ones for, for various reasons.
- 42:15Um, trip planning we talked about, there are a number of different.
- 42:20Trip planning programs.
- 42:22Yes.
- 42:22Um, and again, finding the one that works for you to map out the trip safety.
- 42:28And I'm going through a couple things quickly as we wrap up our time.
- 42:32Yeah.
- 42:32But safety, so RV safety UPS.
- 42:35You got a big truck.
- 42:38This is a pet peeve of mine.
- 42:39I hate to call things out.
- 42:41We're on Facebook.
- 42:42Somebody has just bought a$300,000 plus Class A and wants, should know what a free GPS is.
- 42:49We're talking about safety on roads.
- 42:53Yeah.
- 42:53Like I'm driving this little car, it's out here.
- 42:55That's what I'm pointing.
- 42:56But I can go anywhere pretty much.
- 42:59You've got a dually, even in the dually.
- 43:01Well, it's not the dually, it's the height and the length and the weight.
- 43:04Yeah.
- 43:04So those semi class a's are 50,000 pounds.
- 43:06Right.
- 43:07They're as much as a semi.
- 43:08I'm tall as a semi at 13 feet, five inches.
- 43:11So we are going to say, make sure you have an RD safe GPS.
- 43:16Now that could be an online program.
- 43:18There are a bunch of programs.
- 43:20It could be, um, whether they trucker maps, trucker trucker maps.
- 43:24Don't just use weights.
- 43:25Yeah, don't just Google it.
- 43:26Don't use Google Maps.
- 43:28I'm on this kick because we have heard of and seen too many people that have created cause an accident that's created a problem for other people coming here.
- 43:38There was a bridge that was nine.
- 43:39A foot 10 inches.
- 43:41Yeah.
- 43:41Because it was a covered bridge.
- 43:42It was really cool.
- 43:43But you're not going anywhere near that.
- 43:46And if he said, okay, well I Google mapped it and it took him there, he gets stuck.
- 43:51Yeah.
- 43:51Would not be able to turn around.
- 43:53Mm-hmm.
- 43:53Now you've got the police coming out, you're blocking traffic in both directions, obviously you already safety G RV safe GPS is really important for all of us.
- 44:02Yes.
- 44:02We've seen too many people make some mistakes.
- 44:04Um, what are.
- 44:07Some other, let's talk a little bit about a couple of your favorite places, some hidden gems.
- 44:13We're gonna start wrapping up.
- 44:15We still have a lot more information, but as we start to think about wrapping up and anything that's left, we really want the listeners, you guys, reach out to them.
- 44:25We're gonna talk, how do they reach out to you?
- 44:27Let's just say it now.
- 44:28Oh, how they reach out?
- 44:29How could they reach out with questions?
- 44:31Oh, with questions.
- 44:32They can email us at RV three or, yeah.
- 44:35Go ahead.
- 44:35Well, Facebook, Instagram, RV plus three.
- 44:38Yes.
- 44:39Um, YouTube, TikTok, we have it all.
- 44:42We're gonna put it all in the show notes.
- 44:43Yeah, we'll put it in the show.
- 44:44So if you wanna reach out, you have questions about homeschooling, traveling with a child on the road.
- 44:48Fifth wheels reach out to them, certainly like their, uh, channels.
- 44:53If it resonates with you, we're gonna talk a little bit about.
- 44:58Really cool places that people don't often expect because you have the big ticket items, the big things that everybody's talking about.
- 45:05Mm-hmm.
- 45:06But some of the hidden gems or experiences that you didn't expect, so, oh, well I don't, that's, I'm putting you on the spot.
- 45:14'cause, 'cause that they often go to these hidden, I'm letting them think so they often do the, the cool places, the hidden gem, the experience.
- 45:22I feel like there's many, um, of course, you know, you have Key West, love Key West.
- 45:27Um, but then you have places like the Upper Peninsula in Michigan.
- 45:32Oh yeah.
- 45:32The UP was beautiful.
- 45:32Up is gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous.
- 45:34Heavily wooded, very pretty Petoskey, Petoskey State Park.
- 45:38They have a beach there and it's absolutely gorgeous.
- 45:41It's super fine sand and you can go out, I mean really far up to waist deep.
- 45:47It's clear water.
- 45:48Absolutely gorgeous.
- 45:49Only during the dead of summer.
- 45:50Yeah, only during the dead of summer.
- 45:52Um, yes, they have a lot of wineries.
- 45:55Uh, up in Traverse City, that that's just really, they got New Holland down in that area, or New Holland's a little further south, but they have the tulips, the Oh yeah.
- 46:03Tu Festival.
- 46:04And they have an old, um, windmill.
- 46:07Windmill that's the Holland style windmill.
- 46:08Yeah, yeah.
- 46:09Uhhuh that you can go see, which is a lot of fun.
- 46:11And then you have places like, we went to Acadia.
- 46:14Yeah.
- 46:14And, you know, in Maine and Bar Harbor, and they have so many, you can find so many pretty lighthouses.
- 46:20Um, just what him and I would do is we would lay out the mat.
- 46:25And you could like, let's go the, on the outside of this island here.
- 46:28And we'd just drive and then, okay, let's go to this, out this island, or let's take this road that goes through all these islands and see how far we go.
- 46:35And we'd just go exploring.
- 46:37And we found this cute little town called Stonington, and it's tiny.
- 46:41It's a hidden gem, but it's a hidden gem.
- 46:43It's cute.
- 46:44Um, we found a parking spot we had to drive through and back, but with it, um, we saw lobster boat races there.
- 46:53And the locals were having, they had a festival, a festival, food trucks, and the locals were all super friendly.
- 46:59You know, the Coast Guard came in and it was just, it was a lot of fun and they had boats everywhere.
- 47:04So it's like what you picture for me.
- 47:07Yeah.
- 47:07So that's cool and, and that's a good place to start our wrap up.
- 47:11Because a lot of people think of traveling in an RV and sometimes they think of the big places.
- 47:16Mm-hmm.
- 47:16The national parks, like I said, I've gone to zero.
- 47:19I was across the country three and a half times over three years.
- 47:23The only reason we didn't go to a national park is because we found these cool little places that most people didn't know of.
- 47:30So as you're planning, sure.
- 47:31If you wanna go to Yellowstone National Park, put it on your.
- 47:36List of places you wanna go, but also I love your idea of going into an area, just driving around.
- 47:42Yeah.
- 47:43But really being there and being present and see what's there.
- 47:46Because I passed by Sunflower Fields where there's sunflowers as far as the, I could see, which is an amazing view.
- 47:55Put your phone down though.
- 47:57We're content grade or sometimes put your phone down.
- 47:59That's hard sometimes.
- 48:00Be there.
- 48:01Be present.
- 48:02You know?
- 48:03Yeah, Google it.
- 48:04Watch some YouTube videos of people who talk about hidden gems.
- 48:08I actually did an episode a couple weeks ago mm-hmm.
- 48:10At the Hershey Show introducing people, whether they're hidden gems.
- 48:14Yeah.
- 48:14And there's gonna be a part two, probably in a week or so after this.
- 48:18I don't know when my episodes are going out, but there's also a hidden gems part to ask people, talk to people.
- 48:23You get information when you're in campgrounds.
- 48:26Mm-hmm.
- 48:27You know, go talk to locals, go to the, you know, visitor centers.
- 48:31They're full of information.
- 48:34The goal here is to get out and really enjoy.
- 48:37Don't just go one place to another and you're planning the next place while you're at this one.
- 48:41Yeah.
- 48:41Right.
- 48:42Okay.
- 48:43As we wrap up, what is one.
- 48:46Thing, one tip that you would give people?
- 48:49One tip, like something you would encourage people.
- 48:54I know I put people on the spot, so now I have to talk while they're thinking.
- 48:58I would say don't let fear stop you in the end, because I look back, I, and I was really afraid of it, but I wouldn't change it for the world.
- 49:07I wouldn't, I wouldn't go back.
- 49:09I couldn't imagine now, and everybody's different, but I couldn't imagine just sitting in a house.
- 49:13Because you, you know, when you're there, you think everything's so huge, or my state's so big, and then you start traveling and you're like, no, it's not.
- 49:20And then people are like, what's the most beautiful place?
- 49:22You, you're like, I don't know.
- 49:22There's so many different beautiful places.
- 49:24So I, I just couldn't imagine going back.
- 49:27That's actually a great incredible tip.
- 49:31Again, if you've got nothing else out of this podcast episode, that's it.
- 49:34Don't let fear hold you back.
- 49:36Do you have something?
- 49:37No.
- 49:37Or should we just leave?
- 49:38That was perfect.
- 49:39That was perfect.
- 49:40She spoke for all of us.
- 49:41That was perfect.
- 49:43I wanna thank you both for, thank you.
- 49:44Taking the time to go all the way from Dee down here, the whole, you know, two blocks to come visit me and talk.
- 49:53It was great hanging out with you guys this week.
- 49:56Thank you so much.
- 49:57And again, you could reach them at RV plus three on both.
- 50:01Social media channels, YouTube.
- 50:03I'm gonna put it in the show notes so you don't have to think about it.
- 50:06Um, you can reach out to me on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok.
- 50:11Now I'm doing a little bit YouTube, obviously any podcast platform.
- 50:15We wanna hear from you.
- 50:16What are the questions?
- 50:17You still have questions?
- 50:19We can an we can help answer episode ideas.
- 50:23Please let us know.
- 50:24Thank you for being here and listening, and I wanna remind you, travel isn't just about where you go, it's how you live, and I'm encouraging you to live life to the fullest every day.
