- 1:04Speaker 9: It's time for Movie Meltdown's Attack of the Killers soundtrack.
- 1:08Speaker 1: The live transmission has begun, and we're into the final
- 1:12Speaker 1: hour of hell.
- 1:34Speaker 10: What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown's Attack of the
- 1:36Speaker 10: Killers soundtrack. I'm Brian, and this week I'm very happy
- 1:39Speaker 10: to welcome back one of my favorite running guests over
- 1:42Speaker 10: the years. And I think I can safely say, one
- 1:45Speaker 10: of my favorite people ever. This week we welcome back
- 1:49Speaker 10: Catherine Mary Stewart. Now, with her last appearance on our show,
- 1:52Speaker 10: we had a lot of fun adding her former co-star
- 1:55Speaker 10: and pseudo-sister Kelly Maroney into the conversation. So along those lines,
- 2:00Speaker 10: this time, as Catherine and I were crossing paths again,
- 2:03Speaker 10: she was in the middle of an appearance alongside her
- 2:06Speaker 10: co-star in The Last Starfighter. In fact, he is The
- 2:09Speaker 10: Last Starfighter himself, actor Lance Guest.
- 2:12Speaker 9: Now, I hadn't met Lance.
- 2:13Speaker 11: Before, but I had a good feeling that not.
- 2:16Speaker 10: Only would he be fun to talk with, But also,
- 2:19Speaker 10: since we decided to put together this soundtrack episode, I
- 2:22Speaker 10: was pretty sure Lance would be a good and knowledgeable
- 2:24Speaker 10: guest on the subject. Turns out I was right, as
- 2:27Speaker 10: you'll appear, and in fact, maybe a little more knowledgeable
- 2:31Speaker 10: on music than Catherine is comfortable with. But more on
- 2:34Speaker 10: that as we go. For now, let's settle in with
- 2:36Speaker 10: this week's two special guests, Catherine Marie Stewart and Lance Guess.
- 2:47Speaker 3: So.
- 2:47Speaker 10: I think when we talked to you last time, we'd
- 2:51Speaker 10: actually somehow lucked into having you and Kelly there.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:55Speaker 10: So we were kind of doing the catch up of
- 2:57Speaker 10: how it's been being like sisters all these years. So
- 3:00Speaker 10: with you guys, you're stuck together all these years. I mean,
- 3:03Speaker 10: how has it been like?
- 3:05Speaker 2: Lovers all these years.
- 3:06Speaker 10: It's an ongoing, yeah, like strange relationship. Years and years
- 3:10Speaker 10: go by. It's not that strange.
- 3:12Speaker 12: It's actually the perfect relationship.
- 3:15Speaker 10: I can think of people I worked with years and
- 3:17Speaker 10: years ago, and I don't see them ever.
- 3:19Speaker 9: And sometimes I'm fine with that.
- 3:21Speaker 10: So it's just a different scenario that like, you're kind
- 3:25Speaker 10: of forced into it. And it seems like you guys
- 3:27Speaker 10: have done well, where I've actually run into people that
- 3:31Speaker 10: don't want to hang out with their former co-stars.
- 3:33Speaker 2: I can believe that. No, I can totally believe that.
- 3:35Speaker 12: I think, in fact, in most cases, you know, you
- 3:38Speaker 12: do this movie or this intense, intimate situation for a
- 3:41Speaker 12: month or two, and then it's over, and it's just
- 3:44Speaker 12: like the bubble bursts, and you go back to reality,
- 3:47Speaker 12: and you come down, and you try to, like, get
- 3:50Speaker 12: back to your own sense of self and family or whatever.
- 3:54Speaker 12: And oftentimes you never see the rest of the cast again.
- 3:57Speaker 12: But it wasn't even likely we were forced together. In fact,
- 4:00Speaker 12: there was a period that we didn't see each other for, what,
- 4:04Speaker 12: a decade?
- 4:04Speaker 2: Yeah, easily, easily a decade.
- 4:06Speaker 12: And the chance that we even got together was stupid.
- 4:11Speaker 12: It was just so random.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Completely random.
- 4:14Speaker 12: Completely random, yeah.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Yes, it was. My wife's relatives were living in this
- 4:21Speaker 2: really cool building in New York. And so we had
- 4:24Speaker 2: been staying there. And this was in 1999, I think.
- 4:30Speaker 11: Or 2000.
- 4:31Speaker 12: Jack was in a stroller still.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Yeah, so then it was like 2002. No, no, I'm sorry. No, no, no. Wait. Oh, well,
- 4:39Speaker 2: maybe it was. Maybe it was more like 2006.
- 4:42Speaker 9: Many, many years ago.
- 4:45Speaker 2: I can't remember. Early 2000s, let's say.
- 4:47Speaker 12: Well, when was Jack born?
- 4:49Speaker 2: He was born in 2004.
- 4:50Speaker 12: Okay, so it had to be like 2006. Yeah.
- 4:52Speaker 2: 2005, 2006.
- 4:52Speaker 12: Okay.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Anyways, we're sitting there and we're just about to leave
- 4:57Speaker 2: and the guy that works downstairs, I don't want to
- 5:02Speaker 2: get him in trouble now, but he goes, hey, aren't
- 5:07Speaker 2: you the guy in The Last Starfighter? I said, yes,
- 5:10Speaker 2: I am. He says, I shouldn't be saying this, but
- 5:12Speaker 2: you know, your co-star, she lives up on whatever, 7A
- 5:16Speaker 2: or 8 or whatever it was.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Yeah, whatever it was. Yeah.
- 5:18Speaker 2: And I said, are you kidding me? He's like, yeah.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I said, oh, my God. Can I go, like, just
- 5:24Speaker 2: blow her mind, you know, just go knock on the door?
- 5:26Speaker 9: Just randomly show up on her doorstep.
- 5:27Speaker 2: And he said, we worked it out, and we're just
- 5:30Speaker 2: about to leave. And I go up there, and I'm.
- 5:32Speaker 13: Like, hey.
- 5:33Speaker 12: And I opened the door, and I was like, no way.
- 5:38Speaker 14: Oh, my God.
- 5:40Speaker 12: And so that was sort of our reunion. And then
- 5:42Speaker 12: we kind of kept in touch after that, right?
- 5:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. And then you came out to LA and stuff.
- 5:45Speaker 12: And I would go out to LA. I started going
- 5:47Speaker 12: out to LA like 2009, I think, and always get
- 5:50Speaker 12: in touch with him, as I did with Kelly and
- 5:53Speaker 12: Kelly Maroney. And yeah, we just maintained this great friendship.
- 5:57Speaker 12: I always go out there. I'm sort of like this
- 5:59Speaker 12: little lost babe in the woods when I go out there.
- 6:03Speaker 12: And they always... he and his wife always invite me
- 6:06Speaker 12: over for an incredible meal it's like because i sort
- 6:10Speaker 12: of live off nuts and things you.
- 6:11Speaker 9: Know foraging yeah the wilderness and then.
- 6:17Speaker 12: Studio city and it's hell.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Out there and then we we went and lived in
- 6:21Speaker 2: new york when i was doing the play for three
- 6:23Speaker 2: years so then i got to see you all the
- 6:25Speaker 2: time so that was really fun and uh And then,
- 6:29Speaker 2: you know, I go out to New York.
- 6:30Speaker 12: He'll stay with us or his wife will come out
- 6:32Speaker 12: and stay with us.
- 6:34Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 6:35Speaker 12: And then we started doing these kind of convention things.
- 6:38Speaker 1: That's right.
- 6:38Speaker 10: That was after the fact.
- 6:39Speaker 9: Yeah, that hadn't kicked in really.
- 6:42Speaker 10: This is when it started picking up steam in like
- 6:44Speaker 10: these last 10, 12 years.
- 6:46Speaker 9: It went out of control now.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:47Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 6:48Speaker 2: We hope we don't saturate the market too many.
- 6:51Speaker 9: That's what I worry about.
- 6:54Speaker 10: As anyone listening knows, I hit these every other week
- 6:56Speaker 10: of my life. The fact that I can do that
- 6:58Speaker 10: means there's a lot of them. So I worry sometimes.
- 7:02Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 7:02Speaker 2: But it's really fun. It's really fun that it's become
- 7:05Speaker 2: this very easy, non-freaky thing to do.
- 7:09Speaker 9: Well, yeah, that's what I was just saying.
- 7:10Speaker 10: Also, pop culture has changed so much that it's like
- 7:14Speaker 10: everyone is invested in pop culture.
- 7:15Speaker 9: Where it used to be a very, like, Oh, the
- 7:17Speaker 9: teenagers are into that.
- 7:18Speaker 10: Or it was just.
- 7:19Speaker 9: Little niche groups.
- 7:20Speaker 10: But now you'll see kids dragging their parents here. And
- 7:25Speaker 10: the parents are just as geeky about everything.
- 7:27Speaker 9: As the kids.
- 7:29Speaker 12: Or parents dragging the kids.
- 7:30Speaker 9: Or vice versa.
- 7:30Speaker 12: It's unbelievable how many families come. Little babies. Especially for
- 7:35Speaker 12: you guys.
- 7:36Speaker 10: I grew up on this movie and I make him
- 7:37Speaker 10: watch it now.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Some 40-year-old dad is telling his kids, I can't believe
- 7:41Speaker 2: this is the last Starfighter, blah, blah, blah. And the
- 7:43Speaker 2: 12-year-old kid is kind of looking at me going, who
- 7:45Speaker 2: are you? Kind of glazing over.
- 7:48Speaker 9: I watched that movie. I have problems with the visuals.
- 7:50Speaker 9: Which I did. That's what I was going to say.
- 7:53Speaker 9: I did actually, I don't know.
- 7:55Speaker 10: Again, getting on the effects, you probably don't. It was
- 7:58Speaker 10: Rick Sternbach we just had on recently. And he actually
- 8:01Speaker 10: did work on, again, I love to work in artists.
- 8:04Speaker 10: So he was originally there drawing up storyboards for the
- 8:08Speaker 10: concept art and was working on the, I think it
- 8:11Speaker 10: was the, developing texture maps for the computer rendering of
- 8:15Speaker 10: the space scenes. And I'm like, even with him, because,
- 8:18Speaker 10: I mean, he knew, you know, it was like nothing
- 8:21Speaker 10: like that had been done before, really.
- 8:23Speaker 9: It was like Tron and that movie, and that's it.
- 8:26Speaker 12: And Tron was nowhere near as complex.
- 8:28Speaker 10: Yeah, and could look kind of fake, where yours was.
- 8:30Speaker 9: Still trying to be sort of realistic.
- 8:32Speaker 2: But it's hard to bash on the R effects, because
- 8:37Speaker 2: they wrote the original code upon which a lot of
- 8:40Speaker 2: other stuff is... I mean, they were groundbreaking. They bled
- 8:45Speaker 2: on the battlefield for people nowadays that can do that
- 8:48Speaker 2: shit on their phones.
- 8:49Speaker 10: So I feel like kids won't understand, but I'm like,
- 8:51Speaker 10: you need to put this in context.
- 8:53Speaker 12: Yeah, on a computer that's the size of this room.
- 8:56Speaker 9: This will blow your mind in the 1980s.
- 8:59Speaker 2: And like Nick was saying yesterday, it was a function
- 9:03Speaker 2: of time. You have to prioritize how detailed can you
- 9:07Speaker 2: do this because it's going to take X amount of hours.
- 9:10Speaker 2: At that time. And nowadays, of course, it's... Yeah. It's all.
- 9:14Speaker 12: The foundation is there. And I think that they were still...
- 9:17Speaker 12: While we were shooting the film, they were writing these
- 9:19Speaker 12: codes or whatever, and I think they were still debating
- 9:21Speaker 12: whether they'd use traditional special effects.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Yeah, sure.
- 9:25Speaker 12: Whether they would get this thing done in time. So, yeah,
- 9:28Speaker 12: it's really kind of fascinating. This is something I only
- 9:31Speaker 12: learned about, like, when they did this.
- 9:33Speaker 9: Me too.
- 9:34Speaker 12: 25th anniversary screening, and all the technical guys were there.
- 9:37Speaker 12: I'm sitting on stage going.
- 9:38Speaker 9: No way.
- 9:39Speaker 10: Because your work has nothing to do, you're still doing normal, traditional, yeah.
- 9:43Speaker 12: We're in the trailer park and these guys are sitting
- 9:45Speaker 12: in their little booze, pounding away, I guess, on keyboards.
- 9:49Speaker 10: I don't know what you do.
- 9:51Speaker 9: A giant keyboard.
- 9:52Speaker 12: A giant, yeah, yeah.
- 9:53Speaker 9: A keyboard that filled a room.
- 9:55Speaker 10: But, yeah, that was, and again, we're, rolling into music here.
- 10:00Speaker 10: So yours is, with that movie, I was trying to
- 10:02Speaker 10: pull in stuff from your films and that one's all,
- 10:05Speaker 10: which is an amazing score. I did work some in
- 10:07Speaker 10: on Rick's episode, but I was trying to come up
- 10:10Speaker 10: with some more pop stuff. So we don't really have
- 10:12Speaker 10: much with that one. So I was going to have
- 10:13Speaker 10: to go to other areas. I mean, Catherine, you have
- 10:17Speaker 10: a very amazing voice. Maybe your first entry, if I
- 10:20Speaker 10: think we've discussed in the past. I mean, we can
- 10:23Speaker 10: certainly find something from the apples.
- 10:27Speaker 2: So you want to.
- 10:28Speaker 10: Go with Speed, your big number?
- 10:31Speaker 12: No, I like I'm Coming. That's my favorite.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Is that the orgy scene?
- 10:36Speaker 9: Very subtle. Great references.
- 10:40Speaker 1: I'm coming.
- 10:45Speaker 16: For you now I'm coming coming for you let me.
- 10:57Speaker 17: Tempt you and tease you and hold you and squeeze
- 11:00Speaker 17: you and feel every inch of.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Your love let me show you things you never dreamed.
- 11:09Speaker 18: Of coming Coming for you. Now I'm coming. Coming for you.
- 11:27Speaker 17: Come and take me and shake me and mold me
- 11:31Speaker 17: and make me and fill me up with your fire.
- 11:39Speaker 19: Come to me.
- 11:41Speaker 1: I'll come for you.
- 12:00Speaker 17: And harder and faster and faster And when you think
- 12:04Speaker 17: you can't keep it up I'll take you deeper and
- 12:08Speaker 17: deeper And tighter and tighter And drain every drop of your.
- 12:13Speaker 20: Love coming for you. Now I'm coming, coming just for you.
- 12:51Speaker 12: Yeah, you're very, very subtle. Well, you know, The Apple
- 12:55Speaker 12: was a subtle film.
- 12:57Speaker 9: It's an amazing film.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Significance only to be determined by.
- 13:04Speaker 9: I still thank you every time.
- 13:05Speaker 10: I somehow had seen all of your other stuff and
- 13:08Speaker 10: had missed that one. So that first time we sat
- 13:10Speaker 10: down and you started talking.
- 13:11Speaker 9: I'm like, what is this movie?
- 13:13Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 13:13Speaker 9: I have now rewatched it many times.
- 13:14Speaker 12: And can you explain it to me, please?
- 13:16Speaker 10: Because what is this movie? It's got a story, a
- 13:20Speaker 10: very large story to tell.
- 13:22Speaker 9: And God drives a luxury sedan. I know.
- 13:25Speaker 12: Yeah, this is what we learn in the end. If
- 13:27Speaker 12: you're a hippie and you're living in a park in Berlin,
- 13:30Speaker 12: you get to go to heaven with God in a gold.
- 13:33Speaker 10: The rest of you bim mark idiots are just going
- 13:35Speaker 10: to be left behind.
- 13:36Speaker 3: That's right.
- 13:37Speaker 12: Well, there's only so much room, you know.
- 13:39Speaker 9: Rapture, yes.
- 13:40Speaker 2: And if you are a politician that advocates abstinence, please
- 13:44Speaker 2: show your child this movie.
- 13:47Speaker 9: This will take care of it.
- 13:48Speaker 2: The Archie scene would be like, yeah, no.
- 13:51Speaker 22: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:52Speaker 10: Yeah, the Apple number is like an amazing couple of
- 13:55Speaker 10: minutes there. Just everything going on in that scene.
- 13:58Speaker 12: Yeah, there's a lot going on in every scene in
- 14:01Speaker 12: that movie.
- 14:03Speaker 9: Well, and then we had, again, they just released this.
- 14:07Speaker 10: I'm assuming you've seen, I've gotten my copy of the
- 14:10Speaker 10: Night of the Comet original soundtrack that they brought back out.
- 14:13Speaker 10: And we can definitely work in a few of the,
- 14:16Speaker 10: what's funny is how well, like, because I hadn't ever
- 14:20Speaker 10: heard them by themselves. So, like, there's a couple of
- 14:23Speaker 10: tracks that we kick in, and it was just, like,
- 14:25Speaker 10: it clicked in my head. Like, it's in, and I'm, like,
- 14:28Speaker 10: in that scene. Like, they're so woven into that.
- 14:31Speaker 9: Movie that I watched way too many times.
- 14:33Speaker 10: And I'm just like, it's weird when you hear the,
- 14:36Speaker 10: what is the.
- 14:38Speaker 12: Girls just want to have fun, of course.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 14:40Speaker 12: That's the mall scene, right?
- 14:43Speaker 2: That's the one.
- 14:43Speaker 10: That looks right in there.
- 14:45Speaker 9: I like the unbelievable.
- 14:48Speaker 10: It's one of those that got stuck in my head.
- 14:50Speaker 12: And here's some other changes. Most of you guys had
- 14:53Speaker 12: finals this week.
- 14:55Speaker 23: Later.
- 14:56Speaker 12: Their history, they're canceled. The legal drinking age is now 10,
- 15:00Speaker 12: but you will need ID. Let's be real.
- 15:03Speaker 1: I'll be taking requests from all you teenage comment zombies
- 15:06Speaker 1: on the hit line.
- 15:08Speaker 23: That's 555-4487.
- 15:09Speaker 12: Did you get it?
- 15:10Speaker 3: 555-HITLINE.
- 15:31Speaker 1: How did it be so easy Been on the case
- 15:34Speaker 1: for quite a while She told me home, we skipped
- 15:38Speaker 1: the party Who guessed that she'd be mine Oh, it
- 15:40Speaker 1: was unbelievable Oh, if I only knew How did it
- 15:47Speaker 1: be so unbelievable.
- 16:10Speaker 24: I recollect my adolescence And all the words I kept
- 16:15Speaker 24: inside Those days are gone, now in my flashback I'll
- 16:22Speaker 24: call you up to say goodnight It's unbelievable Oh, if
- 16:29Speaker 24: I only knew How you could be so unbeatable.
- 16:39Speaker 1: It's beyond me that.
- 16:41Speaker 15: I'm beside you.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Oh, it's unbelievable. Oh, if I only knew how you
- 16:49Speaker 1: could be so unbelievable.
- 16:54Speaker 15: It's beyond me that I'm beside you. I wonder more,
- 17:13Speaker 15: we watch the.
- 17:14Speaker 24: Movies Into the.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Night, I hear a riot So good.
- 17:19Speaker 13: To know, you're right beside me I look in your
- 17:24Speaker 13: eyes and say goodnight It's unbelievable, oh.
- 17:38Speaker 1: How you can be so unbelievable It's beyond me, no
- 17:44Speaker 1: one besides you Oh, it's unbelievable Oh, if I only
- 17:49Speaker 1: knew How you can be so unbelievable It's beyond me,
- 17:55Speaker 1: no one besides you.
- 18:08Speaker 10: The one I really remember is the learn to love
- 18:10Speaker 10: again is the big that's at the radio station and
- 18:13Speaker 10: that's sort of that romance moment of you and Hector
- 18:17Speaker 10: and like then you get that sad realization your sister's
- 18:20Speaker 10: like the last girl on earth without a date so
- 18:22Speaker 10: like it's a weird little moment.
- 18:24Speaker 12: You know earth shattering moments like that.
- 18:27Speaker 10: What's a teenage girl to do there's no guys now
- 18:29Speaker 10: you know you go shopping of course shopping and shooting
- 18:33Speaker 10: guns is what.
- 18:34Speaker 9: You do laughing.
- 18:37Speaker 12: It's a sexist movie yet so not somehow.
- 18:40Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 18:41Speaker 9: They have guns. That makes it feminist, right?
- 18:44Speaker 12: As long as they shoot guns.
- 18:45Speaker 25: Yeah.
- 18:46Speaker 9: I don't think that's how that works.
- 18:47Speaker 12: We can look after ourselves is the point, I think.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Walking the tightrope.
- 18:52Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 19:05Speaker 26: That it's over but you can't explain why you wait
- 19:12Speaker 26: at home waiting for the phone to.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Ring but your spirit's.
- 19:18Speaker 26: Up dragging and you're wandering this scene trying to forget
- 19:25Speaker 26: about how happy we used to be as if.
- 19:29Speaker 6: It's like We got a.
- 19:31Speaker 26: Lot of love for giving. We got a lot of
- 19:37Speaker 26: life worth living. We're going to find it sometime.
- 19:42Speaker 1: We got a lot of love for giving. We got
- 19:48Speaker 1: a lot of life worth living.
- 19:52Speaker 26: We're gonna find it sometime, baby.
- 19:57Speaker 1: We can learn to love again. Ooh, and love is magic.
- 20:02Speaker 17: And you're not sure how to feel.
- 20:05Speaker 27: But if you can, It has to be real I
- 20:12Speaker 27: know it's tragic To give up so easily So now
- 20:18Speaker 27: I'm giving everything Just.
- 20:21Speaker 1: To make you see If it's right Don't try to
- 20:26Speaker 1: fight it And if it's wrong We can let it
- 20:32Speaker 1: slip away We got a lot of love we're giving
- 20:39Speaker 1: We got a lot of life we're living We're gonna
- 20:47Speaker 1: find it.
- 20:48Speaker 26: Sometime, baby We can learn to love again Listen to
- 20:56Speaker 26: your heart if you can Pick up your mind A
- 21:00Speaker 26: moment can be lost so easily, yeah Hopefully you will
- 21:11Speaker 26: see And they'll.
- 21:13Speaker 1: See That you and me We got a lot of
- 21:16Speaker 1: love for giving We got a lot of life for
- 21:19Speaker 1: living We're gonna find our place Among the stars Hey, hey,
- 21:28Speaker 1: hey I know this dream Is far from over Starting
- 21:33Speaker 1: tonight Gonna start it all over We're gonna find it
- 21:37Speaker 1: sometime I know.
- 21:38Speaker 11: That But Lance, I didn't want to leave you out
- 21:54Speaker 11: in the other movies.
- 21:55Speaker 9: A lot of yours are just like instrumental tracks.
- 22:00Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 9: So I was thinking Last Starfighter.
- 22:02Speaker 10: Even Halloween, you're going to get nothing but John Carpenter.
- 22:05Speaker 9: So I had to go into it.
- 22:07Speaker 10: And actually, for the movie, I think you're going to
- 22:09Speaker 10: have to come back for a whole episode. Because I'm
- 22:11Speaker 10: assuming you have many, many stories from Jaws the Revenge.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Not so much regarding music, though. Well, no.
- 22:19Speaker 10: I'm assuming there's an entire episode of just things that
- 22:22Speaker 10: came along with that.
- 22:23Speaker 2: It was a five-month shoot.
- 22:25Speaker 12: Oh, my God.
- 22:26Speaker 9: That's insane.
- 22:27Speaker 2: It was a five-month shoot.
- 22:28Speaker 10: But, yeah, there is, again, since we're knee-deep in the
- 22:32Speaker 10: 80s in this one anyway, there is somewhere in there
- 22:35Speaker 10: they work in You Got It All from The Jet. I,
- 22:40Speaker 10: I was the game he would play.
- 23:08Speaker 28: He brought the clouds to my.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Head Then like a ray of light You came my way.
- 23:17Speaker 28: One night Just one look and I knew You would
- 23:26Speaker 28: make everything clear Make all the clouds disappear Who do
- 23:37Speaker 28: I love the best?
- 23:43Speaker 1: Don't you know.
- 23:44Speaker 19: Don't you know You got it all over him You
- 23:50Speaker 19: got me over him Honey, it's true There's just you
- 23:58Speaker 19: You must have been heaven sent Hearing me call you
- 24:03Speaker 19: in Out on a.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Limb And you're all that he's not Just look what.
- 24:12Speaker 28: I got, cause you got it all over here. No,
- 24:18Speaker 28: don't let him worry you so. Once I met you,
- 24:41Speaker 28: I let go Oh, you can surely see You're so
- 24:48Speaker 28: much more to me Just one look and I knew.
- 24:57Speaker 1: You would make everything clear Make all the clouds disappear
- 25:07Speaker 1: You're better than all the rest Who do I love
- 25:12Speaker 1: the best?
- 25:15Speaker 19: Don't you know, don't you.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Know You've got it all over him You got me
- 25:23Speaker 1: over him Honey, it's true.
- 25:27Speaker 19: There's just you. You must have been heaven sent. Hearing
- 25:34Speaker 19: me call you.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Went out on a limb. And you're all that he's not.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Just look what I got. Cause you got it all.
- 25:59Speaker 1: It's true. There's just you.
- 26:04Speaker 19: You must have been heaven sent. Hearing me call you
- 26:10Speaker 19: went out of nothing.
- 26:14Speaker 1: And you're all that he's not. Just look what I got.
- 26:20Speaker 1: You got it all. All over him.
- 26:28Speaker 10: You got it which is very and i heard oh
- 26:31Speaker 10: yeah i heard this constantly back in the day.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Wait in in jaws in jaws.
- 26:35Speaker 9: I'm assuming on a radio somewhere.
- 26:37Speaker 2: It might have been in the new year's eve party
- 26:39Speaker 2: yeah because there was a new year's eve party uh
- 26:41Speaker 2: that was happening which.
- 26:42Speaker 10: Again i like that's one of the things i like
- 26:44Speaker 10: about these episodes is like you get the ones that
- 26:46Speaker 10: are like the go-to very obvious oh yeah that's the
- 26:49Speaker 10: song that goes with this movie and then you get
- 26:51Speaker 10: all these other ones that get worked in in a
- 26:53Speaker 10: business deal somewhere they're like look you put this in
- 26:55Speaker 10: our movie somewhere And they have to find a way
- 26:57Speaker 10: to kind of be like, oh, yeah, we're going to.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Put that in there. What's funny is when they do
- 27:00Speaker 2: original music in an 80s movie, they were already self-conscious
- 27:05Speaker 2: of what the 80s sound was. There's a difference between, say,
- 27:10Speaker 2: some track by Simple Minds or something, and then something
- 27:15Speaker 2: that a composer goes, huh, okay, lots of synth, this beat,
- 27:19Speaker 2: 120 BPM, zip, zip. It's like when a composer goes, okay,
- 27:24Speaker 2: we have to do this, this, this, and this, it
- 27:26Speaker 2: becomes a little less special.
- 27:29Speaker 10: I feel like we get a lot of that now
- 27:31Speaker 10: because we have so many things trying to mimic the 80s.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:34Speaker 10: And some do it successfully, both movies and TV shows
- 27:38Speaker 10: and music too. So we've got, there's such a weird
- 27:41Speaker 10: synth uprising now.
- 27:43Speaker 14: It is weird.
- 27:43Speaker 2: I mean, there's obviously a lot of new instruments that
- 27:46Speaker 2: were involved in the drum machines and the sequencers and
- 27:49Speaker 2: stuff like that. That made it possible to do all
- 27:52Speaker 2: that dance stuff.
- 27:53Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Dance heavy stuff that they did in the 80s. But, Often,
- 27:56Speaker 2: you know, the people in the 80s were not trying
- 27:58Speaker 2: to be 80s bands. They were trying to do something different.
- 28:00Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 28:01Speaker 2: So that became the 80s.
- 28:03Speaker 10: Became the 80s thing, yeah. Everything was alternative before alternative
- 28:07Speaker 10: was a term, which was the 90s, and then spun
- 28:10Speaker 10: off into a whole other thing.
- 28:11Speaker 1: That's right.
- 28:13Speaker 9: Blues explosion.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, thank you so much.
- 28:17Speaker 14: We got to do this thing right now.
- 28:20Speaker 4: Yeah, holding one little spot, though.
- 28:25Speaker 1: This is john spencer and you're listening to movie meltdown
- 28:29Speaker 1: in the.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Mood for hot coffee when.
- 28:31Speaker 19: You are nothing else will satisfy.
- 28:33Speaker 1: We should have our coffee i know you like coffee
- 28:37Speaker 1: oh my.

- 29:01Speaker 29: coffee here, but I feel like enjoying a nice hot

- 30:37Speaker 30: It's just Bernie!
- 30:39Speaker 10: So yeah, the only other one I came up with is,
- 30:41Speaker 10: and again, this I kind of wanted to address just
- 30:43Speaker 10: because you end up in all these sub-genre kind of things,
- 30:47Speaker 10: but when you do something that kind of breaks in
- 30:49Speaker 10: a weird, super popular way... One of the few was
- 30:53Speaker 10: in Weekend at Bernie's, you get Hot and Cold from
- 30:56Speaker 10: Jermaine Stewart.
- 30:57Speaker 12: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:58Speaker 9: That's her closing song, I believe.
- 30:59Speaker 2: That's right.
- 31:00Speaker 10: So, again, you think, like, of all the stuff people
- 31:03Speaker 10: know you from, do you think that's probably the most widespread?
- 31:07Speaker 9: Because I feel like.
- 31:07Speaker 10: That's the one that hit. And it feels like everybody's mom.
- 31:11Speaker 9: Kind of watched that on cable at some point.
- 31:13Speaker 10: So everybody ended up seeing that eventually.
- 31:15Speaker 12: Yeah, that definitely was the iconic music piece for that movie.
- 31:20Speaker 12: I mean, that's what they identify it with, you know.
- 31:40Speaker 1: I like it, I like.
- 31:41Speaker 25: It, yeah Everyone would like a good feeling When you're
- 31:49Speaker 25: hot or when.
- 31:51Speaker 1: You're cold Keep on rockin', keep.
- 31:55Speaker 31: On reelin' If you're young or if you're old.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Some like it hot, oh yes Some like it cold
- 32:07Speaker 1: Did you hear that? Some never know. Some never know.
- 32:15Speaker 25: If you're high and always flying, remember where you are today.
- 32:22Speaker 31: Keep this good time, keep this feeling.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Don't ever let it fade away. Sun like and high. Oh, yes.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Some like it cold. Did you hear that? Some never know.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Some never know. Some like it hot. I like it,
- 32:47Speaker 1: I like it. Some like it cold. Some like it cold.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Some never know. Some never know.
- 33:01Speaker 13: A new day is done.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Get up from your.
- 33:09Speaker 31: Slumber And let your light shine Oh yeah And let
- 33:54Speaker 31: your light shine.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 34:12Speaker 25: Everyone would like a good feeling When you're hot or
- 34:17Speaker 25: when you're cold Keep on rocking, keep on reeling If
- 34:23Speaker 25: you're young or if you're.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Old Some like it hot Some like it hot Some
- 34:31Speaker 1: like it cold I like it, I like it Some
- 34:36Speaker 1: never know Some never know Some like it hot Some
- 34:46Speaker 1: like it cold Some never know Some like it hot
- 35:01Speaker 1: Some like it cold Some love alone Some love alone
- 35:10Speaker 1: Some like it hot Some like it cold Some love alone.
- 35:25Speaker 12: I mean, I don't know if they, I never saw
- 35:27Speaker 12: Weekend at Bernie's 2, but I don't know if it
- 35:29Speaker 12: carried on into that movie as well.
- 35:31Speaker 10: It's sad to be like, it really just doesn't hold
- 35:33Speaker 10: up to the quality of Weekend at Bernie's.
- 35:34Speaker 12: Well, I'm just talking about the, of course not, but
- 35:37Speaker 12: I'm just talking about.
- 35:38Speaker 10: That song per se.
- 35:40Speaker 9: Right, exactly.
- 35:41Speaker 12: But that, Bernie's 2, the whole Bernie's dance was born.
- 35:47Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 35:48Speaker 12: And a weird story about that is when my son
- 35:52Speaker 12: was in high school, he was in grade 12, and
- 35:56Speaker 12: he did African dance at the school that they went to.
- 35:58Speaker 12: African dance was a very, very popular class to take.
- 36:02Speaker 12: So he'd been taking it years and years. And he
- 36:05Speaker 12: got to do a solo to an African.
- 36:08Speaker 10: Beat, which is similar to the beat, of course.
- 36:11Speaker 12: And as opposed to doing like pure African dance, he
- 36:15Speaker 12: did the Bernie dance. And I was sitting there watching
- 36:18Speaker 12: him going, oh, my God.
- 36:20Speaker 32: I've influenced my children.
- 36:23Speaker 9: Was he also pretending to be dead the whole time?
- 36:25Speaker 12: Well, I guess that's what you do when you do
- 36:28Speaker 12: the Bernie dance.
- 36:29Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 36:29Speaker 9: A little voodoo is required.
- 36:30Speaker 12: It was kind of like, I don't know if he
- 36:32Speaker 12: was intentionally tipping his hat to me, but I was like, oh. Anyway,
- 36:36Speaker 12: because most of the time teenage kids are just like,
- 36:38Speaker 12: I hate you.
- 36:38Speaker 9: I don't want anything to do with my mom.
- 36:40Speaker 2: Please don't dance, Mom and Dad.
- 36:42Speaker 9: Yeah, really. But if they can somehow find a way
- 36:44Speaker 9: to embarrass you in the process.
- 36:46Speaker 3: Yeah, right.
- 36:46Speaker 9: Oh, absolutely.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Then it's correct.
- 36:47Speaker 10: Then it's okay. Well, and then the other, you know,
- 36:51Speaker 10: Ty and Lance, I guess you've got a huge musical
- 36:55Speaker 10: background that I don't know if you want to at
- 36:57Speaker 10: least tell people how you ended up Million Dollar Quartet.
- 37:01Speaker 9: That's pretty huge. Especially the character you get to play.
- 37:05Speaker 2: Well, to tell you the truth, it was very easy
- 37:09Speaker 2: to do. Actually, what I needed mostly to do, I
- 37:12Speaker 2: played Johnny Cash in the original production of Million Dollar Quartet,
- 37:16Speaker 2: which is about Sun Records 1956. A reunion of Elvis,
- 37:21Speaker 2: Jerry Lee, Carl Perkins, and John, and Sam Phillips. And
- 37:26Speaker 2: so what I had to learn really was to sort
- 37:31Speaker 2: of simplify my guitar playing. Because I used to play
- 37:34Speaker 2: a much more, you know, I learned to play guitar
- 37:36Speaker 2: in the 70s and stuff. Everybody was playing more intricate.
- 37:39Speaker 2: Stephen Sills kind of, you know. And our musical director,
- 37:43Speaker 2: Chuck Mead, was like, yeah, Lance, you can't do that.
- 37:45Speaker 2: These guys were not that complicated. It was kind of
- 37:48Speaker 2: like boom, chicka-boom, chicka-boom, chicka-boom, chicka-boom. And so Chuck sort
- 37:53Speaker 2: of quite brilliantly, actually, sort of retooled my guitar style
- 37:57Speaker 2: after 45 years of playing the guitar. And so I
- 38:03Speaker 2: just had to– it was very simple music. Those arrangements
- 38:06Speaker 2: were very simple but hard to do well. Like there's–
- 38:12Speaker 2: You know, they're easy to play but hard to play well.
- 38:14Speaker 2: And you need really good players to do it. And
- 38:16Speaker 2: I was kind of on the low end of musical mastery.
- 38:24Speaker 2: You know, we had a lead guitar player that was great. Actually,
- 38:26Speaker 2: two that were pretty great. A great piano player and
- 38:29Speaker 2: drummer and bass player. So I've been playing a long time,
- 38:33Speaker 2: but I'm basically a picker. I'm a guitar picker. I
- 38:37Speaker 2: don't read music. I'm, you know.
- 38:38Speaker 10: What, again, I guess at some point had to... I've
- 38:41Speaker 10: already been a fan of his. What's sort of one
- 38:42Speaker 10: of your favorites of his?
- 38:44Speaker 2: Of John's? Of John, yeah. My favorite? I have several.
- 38:49Speaker 2: I really have several.
- 38:50Speaker 9: He's got quite a list of songs.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Just from a musical standpoint, I love Get Rhythm. I
- 38:55Speaker 2: think it has a lot of poppy kind of sound.
- 38:57Speaker 2: I love.
- 38:57Speaker 9: And stuff they weren't really doing at that age.
- 39:00Speaker 2: Boy Named Sue technically was written by Shel Silverstein, but
- 39:03Speaker 2: that was the first song I ever learned, like memorized
- 39:05Speaker 2: when I was nine or ten years old. You know,
- 39:10Speaker 2: I like, you know, obviously Folsom Prison.
- 39:13Speaker 9: They're all amazing, yeah.
- 39:13Speaker 2: San Quentin is a great song. Starkville City Jail.
- 39:18Speaker 9: That last wave is pretty amazing, too.
- 39:20Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:20Speaker 9: It gets super dark.
- 39:21Speaker 2: That was crazy.
- 39:22Speaker 10: When the man comes around and covering Nine Inch Nails songs.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the thing about Johnny Cash is that everybody
- 39:29Speaker 2: loves him, no matter. what they always said that charlie
- 39:32Speaker 2: daniel said this whatever you know whatever end of the
- 39:34Speaker 2: political spectrum you're on everybody loves johnny cash you know
- 39:38Speaker 2: the the hippest trendiest you know tattooed scrawny yeah you
- 39:44Speaker 2: know death metal dude and the biggest redneck in the world,
- 39:48Speaker 2: you know? So it's like everybody.
- 39:50Speaker 9: Loved Johnny Cash.
- 39:51Speaker 10: He was one of those that could straddle, like people
- 39:53Speaker 10: in country music will still love him, but he's in
- 39:55Speaker 10: the Rock.
- 39:56Speaker 9: And Roll Hall of Fame.
- 39:56Speaker 10: So it's like he is that era when it started
- 39:59Speaker 10: to break through and become something bigger. And he was
- 40:02Speaker 10: instrumental in that.
- 40:04Speaker 2: Yeah, he was really quite remarkable. And it was really
- 40:07Speaker 2: fun to play him because it was... Because he's such
- 40:10Speaker 2: an interesting guy.
- 40:12Speaker 9: What I've seen is a pretty dialed down. It's not
- 40:14Speaker 9: an over the top. Trying to be Johnny.
- 40:16Speaker 10: As much as just getting into the character.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Well that's the thing. He wasn't a forced guy. He
- 40:22Speaker 2: was not even a loud singer. He had to suck
- 40:26Speaker 2: on the mic a lot of the time. And that's
- 40:30Speaker 2: one of the reasons. He has that great sound. Because
- 40:32Speaker 2: you can get really low like this. If you sit down.
- 40:36Speaker 2: It's like you don't have to. It's not Pavarotti, you know,
- 40:40Speaker 2: where they have to fill a 1,200-seat house.
- 40:42Speaker 3: Hey, get rhythm when you get the blues. Come on,
- 40:47Speaker 3: get rhythm when you get the blues. Get a rock
- 40:52Speaker 3: and roll feeling in your bones. Put taps on your
- 40:54Speaker 3: toes and get going. Get rhythm when you get the blues.
- 41:01Speaker 3: A little shoeshine boy, he never gets low down, but
- 41:04Speaker 3: he's got the dirtiest job in town. Bending low at
- 41:07Speaker 3: the people's feet on a windy corner of a dirty street. Well,
- 41:11Speaker 3: I asked him while he shined my shoes, how'd he
- 41:13Speaker 3: keep from getting the blues? He grinned as he raised
- 41:15Speaker 3: his little head, he popped his shoeshine ragging, and he said,
- 41:19Speaker 3: get rhythm. When you get the blues, come on, get rhythm.
- 41:25Speaker 3: When you get the blues, a jumpy rhythm makes you
- 41:29Speaker 3: feel so fine. It'll shake all your trouble from your
- 41:31Speaker 3: worried mind. Get rhythm when you get the blues.
- 41:47Speaker 28: Get rhythm when you get the blues Come on, get
- 41:49Speaker 28: rhythm when you get the blues Get a rock and
- 41:52Speaker 28: roll feeling in your bones Put taps on your toes
- 41:54Speaker 28: and get.
- 41:55Speaker 3: Going Get rhythm when you get the blues Well, I
- 42:14Speaker 3: sat down to listen to the shoeshine boy, and I
- 42:17Speaker 3: thought I was gonna jump with joy. Slapped on the
- 42:19Speaker 3: shoe polish left and right, he took his shoeshine rag
- 42:21Speaker 3: and he held it tight. He stopped once to wipe
- 42:24Speaker 3: the sweat away, I said, you mighty little boy to
- 42:26Speaker 3: be a-workin' that way. He said, I like it with
- 42:28Speaker 3: a big white grin, kept on a-poppin' and he said again,
- 42:31Speaker 3: get rhythm. When you get the blues, come on, get rhythm.
- 42:38Speaker 3: When you get the blues, it only costs a dime,
- 42:41Speaker 3: just a nickel a shoe. It does a million dollars
- 42:43Speaker 3: worth of good for you.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Get rhythm.
- 42:47Speaker 3: When you get the blues.
- 42:52Speaker 10: From 1985's Desert Hearts, that was, of course, Get Rhythm.
- 42:56Speaker 9: From the beloved Johnny Cash. Hey, Regina.
- 43:00Speaker 2: Regina, give that thing a rest, will you?
- 43:01Speaker 3: In a minute, Mel.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Look, I don't pay you to do that kind of
- 43:04Speaker 1: stuff around here.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Hey there, this is John Doe. You're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 43:17Speaker 9: Glad you are, because otherwise you'd be.
- 43:18Speaker 2: Wasting your time playing some stupid video game.
- 43:22Speaker 1: Wait a minute.
- 43:26Speaker 12: Somebody named DMK in sixth place? When did this happen?
- 43:29Speaker 9: Look, don't be an overachiever.
- 43:30Speaker 2: You'll fit in better with your age group, okay?
- 43:33Speaker 14: This is really annoying.
- 43:35Speaker 10: Well, I was going to let you guys pick some
- 43:37Speaker 10: of your favorite songs used in movies.
- 43:39Speaker 9: So I know, Lance, you have many.
- 43:42Speaker 2: I have a few.
- 43:42Speaker 10: You got all excited when I threw this idea out
- 43:45Speaker 10: to you.
- 43:45Speaker 2: But sadly, I mean, like I said, going along with
- 43:47Speaker 2: this feeling, not this feeling, this theme, almost all of
- 43:52Speaker 2: my choices are preexisting songs.
- 43:55Speaker 10: Which is, again, that's another one of these things I like,
- 43:58Speaker 10: is you see the difference between people creating music specifically
- 44:01Speaker 10: for a project versus, and I think equally as artistic sometimes,
- 44:06Speaker 10: is finding a pre-existing song and perfectly working into a scene.
- 44:10Speaker 12: Right.
- 44:11Speaker 10: There's an artistry to that, too.
- 44:12Speaker 2: Totally. And my first choice, the first thing that comes
- 44:15Speaker 2: to mind is the bus scene in Almost Famous when
- 44:19Speaker 2: everybody's singing Tiny Dancer. I mean, to me, that's one
- 44:21Speaker 2: of the greatest pieces of film ever. I've ever seen
- 44:24Speaker 2: with regards to pop music.
- 44:25Speaker 9: Ladies and gentlemen, the evening is over.
- 44:29Speaker 3: We hope you all enjoyed yourselves, and we'll see.
- 44:31Speaker 1: You all again in 1974.
- 44:32Speaker 9: Good evening!
- 44:35Speaker 7: Blue jean baby L.A. lady Seamstress for the band.
- 44:51Speaker 33: Ballerina, you must have.
- 44:55Speaker 34: Seen her Dancing in the sand Now she's in me,
- 45:08Speaker 34: always with me Tiny dancer in my hand.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Guitar solo.
- 45:21Speaker 33: Jesus freaks Out in the street Pending tickets are for gone.
- 45:33Speaker 1: He's turning back She just laughs The boulevard is not
- 45:43Speaker 1: that bad Can't hold my hand He makes his stand
- 45:55Speaker 1: in the auditorium. Looking on, she sings her songs. The
- 46:08Speaker 1: words she knows, the tune she loves. Hold me closer,
- 46:23Speaker 1: tiny dancer.
- 46:24Speaker 31: I have to go home.
- 46:27Speaker 1: Count the headlights on the highway.
- 46:33Speaker 3: You are home.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Lady darling, she's the lady. You haven't been so dead today.
- 46:47Speaker 2: Basically all the songs in that movie were perfect for that.
- 46:52Speaker 2: The Led Zeppelin songs.
- 46:53Speaker 10: It's all Nancy Wilson kind of piecing that together.
- 46:57Speaker 2: And so that was, that was to me, that was like,
- 46:59Speaker 2: that's my favorite of all time. Second is Scotland PA.
- 47:03Speaker 2: I don't know if you ever saw Scotland PA.
- 47:05Speaker 9: I know the title.
- 47:06Speaker 2: Yeah. I always say it's not, not 1973, not 1975.
- 47:09Speaker 2: It's 1974. It's a very.
- 47:10Speaker 10: Specific, very tiny window.
- 47:14Speaker 2: The filmmakers could, uh, would, might, might, uh, Dispute me
- 47:19Speaker 2: on that, but, you know, Marshall Tucker and Bad Company,
- 47:22Speaker 2: and it's just a brilliant, brilliant, brilliant score.
- 47:26Speaker 1: ¶ ¶ ¶ ¶ Can't you see? Oh, can't you
- 47:46Speaker 1: see what that woman, Lord, she's been doing to me?
- 47:49Speaker 1: Can't you see?
- 47:53Speaker 5: Can't you see what that woman, Lord, she's been doing
- 47:58Speaker 5: to me? Gonna buy a ticket now As far as
- 48:17Speaker 5: I can Ain't never coming back.
- 48:26Speaker 4: Ride me southbound All the way to.
- 48:29Speaker 35: Georgia now To the train.
- 48:33Speaker 5: And run out of track Can't you see.
- 48:40Speaker 1: Oh, can't you see.
- 49:02Speaker 36: Thank you. Can't you see? Oh, can't you see?
- 49:29Speaker 5: What that woman long, she been doing to me Can't
- 49:32Speaker 5: you see?
- 49:33Speaker 1: Lord, I can't stand to.
- 49:37Speaker 2: Wait Sweet and Lowdown, Woody Allen's movie, which is a
- 50:05Speaker 2: little bit of a cheat because it is about a musician,
- 50:08Speaker 2: so it's all that Django Reinhardt type of music, which
- 50:12Speaker 2: is just awesome. And probably the one that I bought,
- 53:22Speaker 2: the soundtrack that I'm like, I'm getting this, was, of course,
- 53:24Speaker 2: Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? T-Bone Burnett's brilliant, brilliant.
- 53:28Speaker 37: Oh death Oh death.
- 53:43Speaker 35: Won't you spare me over till another year?
- 53:47Speaker 1: What is this?
- 53:53Speaker 35: That I can't see with eyes cold hands taking hold
- 53:57Speaker 35: of me.
- 54:00Speaker 8: Well, this is death none can excel.
- 54:04Speaker 7: I hold the key for heaven or hell.
- 54:09Speaker 37: Oh, death.
- 54:19Speaker 1: Oh, death.
- 54:24Speaker 14: Won't you fire me over.
- 54:26Speaker 5: Till another year?
- 54:40Speaker 24: Well, I'll bridle your tongue till you can't talk.
- 54:44Speaker 35: I'll stiffen your limb till you can't walk.
- 54:50Speaker 8: I'll blind your eyes till you can't see.
- 54:53Speaker 7: This very hour, come and go with me.
- 54:57Speaker 23: Oh, dear.
- 54:59Speaker 26: Oh.
- 55:08Speaker 35: Won't you spy me over till another year guitar.
- 55:18Speaker 14: Solo Oh, death, how you're treating me.
- 55:31Speaker 35: You're blinding my eyes till I can't see.
- 55:37Speaker 8: You're stiffening my limbs and making me cold, taking my
- 55:42Speaker 8: body from my soul.
- 55:49Speaker 1: Oh, death.
- 56:03Speaker 38: I think that changed an entire movement of music.
- 56:22Speaker 10: Like I think it is funny watching that people who
- 56:25Speaker 10: would have never even like who would have, either not
- 56:28Speaker 10: known what bluegrass was or would have shrugged it off
- 56:31Speaker 10: and laughed again because they were like, ugh, country music.
- 56:34Speaker 10: It's a different thing. It's a very different mode and
- 56:38Speaker 10: world than what traditional, especially modern country is. It opened
- 56:43Speaker 10: that up for everyone.
- 56:44Speaker 2: I should say this is in no particular order because
- 56:48Speaker 2: that is in a class by itself. Oh Brother is
- 56:50Speaker 2: totally in a class by itself because it's not just
- 56:53Speaker 2: like taking classic rock songs from this time and go, hey,
- 56:56Speaker 2: let's jam together. Which I think is great, you know.
- 57:00Speaker 2: My other one is Coming Home. Hal Ashby's movie, Coming Home,
- 57:04Speaker 2: used a lot of Rolling Stones, which I always think
- 57:06Speaker 2: are just inherently theatrical.
- 57:09Speaker 9: That's a specific one of theirs.
- 57:12Speaker 2: Yeah. They used Sympathy for the Devil when Bobby Carradine is,
- 57:17Speaker 2: you know, playing that character where he's killing himself. And
- 57:19Speaker 2: You're Out of Touch, My Baby, the very beginning.
- 57:27Speaker 1: Thank you. Well, baby, baby, baby, you're out of time
- 57:57Speaker 1: I said, baby, baby, baby, you're out of time You
- 58:03Speaker 1: are left out Out of there with a lot of
- 58:14Speaker 1: doubt Cause, baby, baby, baby, you're out of time Girl
- 58:24Speaker 1: who wants to run away.
- 58:26Speaker 15: Discovers that you had a.
- 58:30Speaker 24: Day It's no good you thinking that you're all.
- 58:37Speaker 6: Still mad You're out of touch my baby, I might
- 58:42Speaker 6: want my favor baby I said baby baby baby.
- 58:48Speaker 1: You're out of my mind Well, baby, baby, baby, you're
- 58:56Speaker 1: out of my mind. I said, baby, baby, baby, you're
- 59:04Speaker 1: out of my mind. Yes, you're all left out.
- 59:12Speaker 9: Out of there with an out of doubt.
- 59:16Speaker 1: Baby, baby, baby, you're out of time.
- 59:25Speaker 30: A better girl Giving up in the social world But
- 59:32Speaker 30: you can't come back Be the first in line Oh
- 59:36Speaker 30: no You're absolutely my baby My.
- 59:41Speaker 1: Poor old-fashioned baby I said baby, baby, baby You're out
- 59:49Speaker 1: of time Yes, you're all left out.
- 1:00:11Speaker 30: Out of there with an out of doubt.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: Baby, baby, baby, you're out of hand. Sing a song.
- 1:00:24Speaker 12: Baby.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: You don't know what's going.
- 1:00:57Speaker 14: On You've been away for much.
- 1:01:00Speaker 30: Too long But you can't come back and think you
- 1:01:05Speaker 30: are still there.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: I said, baby, baby, baby, you're out of time.
- 1:01:37Speaker 9: Yes, you are left out.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: Yes, you are.
- 1:01:41Speaker 6: I said, you're left out of there and out of doubt.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: I said, baby, baby, baby, you're out of time. All right.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: I said, baby, baby, baby, you're out of time. I said, baby, baby, baby,
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: I said, baby, baby, baby, you're out of time. I said, baby, baby, baby,
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: you're out of time. I said, baby, baby, baby, you're
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: out of time.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: And aren't you glad you asked me?
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: And, uh, yeah, because she was like, I.
- 1:02:42Speaker 9: Might come up with one. And you were like, wait, wait, wait,
- 1:02:44Speaker 9: I got this.
- 1:02:45Speaker 12: I'm just like terrified now.
- 1:02:48Speaker 9: Just wait until you hear my answer.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: I am effectively a classic rock nerd, you know? So, uh, uh, and, but,
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: but in terms of non pre-recorded stuff, uh, my favorite is, um,
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: I think it was Ry Cooter that did Paris, Texas.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: Do you remember Paris, Texas?
- 1:03:05Speaker 10: Oh, yeah.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: And that great, like.
- 1:03:06Speaker 10: We had Hunter, the kid. We had him on as
- 1:03:10Speaker 10: an adult now. And, like, interesting still, like, being a
- 1:03:12Speaker 10: kid in that scenario. But, yeah, that entire soundtrack is amazing. And, again,
- 1:03:19Speaker 10: the whole thing is so tailor-made. Like, it's tailor-made for
- 1:03:22Speaker 10: Harry Dean. It's tailor-made for that music. Like, everything about
- 1:03:26Speaker 10: that movie is so tweaked to it. Like, it can
- 1:03:28Speaker 10: only exist in its own little world.
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: And so American. Yeah. And, you know, of course, Sam
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: Shepard is, like, such a.
- 1:03:33Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah. And Vin Vendors, like, the visuals are amazing.
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: But Vin Vendors is like a German guy. He's like, okay,
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: let me make an American movie.
- 1:03:38Speaker 12: Thank you.
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: You're welcome.
- 1:03:39Speaker 10: Coming here and seeing these visuals and being like, no, no,
- 1:03:42Speaker 10: I want to capture this.
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: Yeah, totally. Yeah.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:03:59Speaker 22: Thank you.
- 1:05:02Speaker 24: All right.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: I didn't want to take up too much time.
- 1:05:05Speaker 9: No, no, no.
- 1:05:05Speaker 8: Definitely.
- 1:05:06Speaker 9: Please, I don't even want to talk anymore. You can
- 1:05:08Speaker 9: throw a couple out there.
- 1:05:10Speaker 12: Okay, I'm going to go to the other end of
- 1:05:12Speaker 12: the spectrum here for all you people that know nothing
- 1:05:15Speaker 12: about music and just sort of go, God, I kind
- 1:05:17Speaker 12: of like that sound.
- 1:05:18Speaker 14: Come on, you're a dancer.
- 1:05:20Speaker 9: I'm going way back. I don't know that you're still currently.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:05:23Speaker 12: You grew up with music?
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: Oh, well, I did.
- 1:05:26Speaker 12: I was like a 70s kind of music person. I
- 1:05:29Speaker 12: liked kind of like the Earth, Wind & Fire funk and,
- 1:05:32Speaker 12: you know, brick house, that kind of thing.
- 1:05:36Speaker 9: They're back on tour now.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: Are they?
- 1:05:38Speaker 10: It never goes away.
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:39Speaker 12: Well, Earth, Wind & Fire.
- 1:05:40Speaker 9: I'm sure the Commodores will be around.
- 1:05:41Speaker 14: Yeah. Well, okay.
- 1:05:43Speaker 12: I hate you so much, Lance. I'm so sorry. Oh,
- 1:05:46Speaker 12: my God.
- 1:05:47Speaker 9: The friendship is over as of this episode. We've ruined it.
- 1:05:50Speaker 12: Well, I'm so not what that is just that you've
- 1:05:53Speaker 12: heard for the last half hour.
- 1:05:54Speaker 9: That's fine.
- 1:05:56Speaker 12: But having said that, I know that there are many
- 1:05:58Speaker 12: people out there that will appreciate my book. So the
- 1:06:03Speaker 12: first thing that came to mind for me was... Jesus
- 1:06:07Speaker 12: Christ Superstar. One of my favorite movies ever. I mean,
- 1:06:13Speaker 12: I also saw that at a pivotal time in my life,
- 1:06:16Speaker 12: knowing nothing truly about Christianity even. Not even really knowing
- 1:06:21Speaker 12: who this person was. And I was like, oh my God,
- 1:06:24Speaker 12: that's what the story is. And how 70s is that?
- 1:06:28Speaker 12: The movie itself, the choreography, Robert Iscoff choreographed that stuff. I...
- 1:06:35Speaker 12: And I was getting into dance at that time and
- 1:06:38Speaker 12: that was the kind of dance that we did. I
- 1:06:42Speaker 12: was passionate about that movie and I knew every single
- 1:06:45Speaker 12: song in it. So that's sort of like the number.
- 1:06:49Speaker 10: One thing for me.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: What's the go-to though?
- 1:06:50Speaker 9: Which is your favorite?
- 1:06:51Speaker 22: Oh, Jesus.
- 1:06:52Speaker 9: Exactly. Exactly.
- 1:06:56Speaker 10: See, my favorite, again, I thought Carl Anderson was amazing.
- 1:07:00Speaker 10: Like still one of the best voices.
- 1:07:02Speaker 9: Sadly, he's gone.
- 1:07:04Speaker 10: I did see one of the last touring, I think
- 1:07:06Speaker 10: the year before he died, he toured and I saw
- 1:07:08Speaker 10: him and he still year before he was gone, still
- 1:07:11Speaker 10: had that voice and was like still in shape. Like
- 1:07:14Speaker 10: he was up there and like, again, they modernized it.
- 1:07:16Speaker 10: So he's just wearing like a black leather vest. And
- 1:07:19Speaker 10: I'm like, he was still just like amazing. So his big,
- 1:07:23Speaker 10: finale number his big that white outfit is my favorite
- 1:07:26Speaker 10: outfit maybe of all movie times ever and.
- 1:07:29Speaker 12: Honestly i don't think i could i loved every song
- 1:07:32Speaker 12: on that i just did i can't help it i
- 1:07:34Speaker 12: i can't break it down and get really super.
- 1:07:37Speaker 10: Again i didn't love tons of musicals and i again
- 1:07:40Speaker 10: i've told you i've gotten worse and worse about religion
- 1:07:43Speaker 10: over the years So now my status as religion is just.
- 1:07:47Speaker 9: Jesus Christ Superstar? Does that count? That's really all I.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: Need is that.
- 1:07:50Speaker 12: That's sort of, it's sad in a way, but you're right.
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: But it's, I think, a very humanist approach.
- 1:07:57Speaker 12: I just loved it.
- 1:07:58Speaker 10: I did.
- 1:07:59Speaker 26: It seems to me a strange thing.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: Mystifying That a man like.
- 1:08:06Speaker 10: You Can waste his time On women of her kind.
- 1:08:13Speaker 29: I call it man yes.
- 1:08:16Speaker 26: I can understand that she amuses but to let her
- 1:08:23Speaker 26: kiss you stroke your hair that's hardly in your line
- 1:08:29Speaker 26: it's not that.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: I object to her profession but.
- 1:08:34Speaker 9: She doesn't fit in well.
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: With what you teach and say it doesn't help us
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: if you're.
- 1:08:40Speaker 26: Inconsistent They only need a small excuse to put us
- 1:08:45Speaker 26: all away.
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: Who are you.
- 1:08:48Speaker 14: To criticize her? Who are you to despise her?
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: Leave her, leave her.
- 1:08:52Speaker 14: Let her be now.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: Leave her, leave her.
- 1:08:55Speaker 25: She's with me now. If your slate is clean, then
- 1:08:57Speaker 25: you can throw stones.
- 1:09:03Speaker 10: It's just a good, that's what I realized after watching
- 1:09:05Speaker 10: it so many times. I was like, it just is
- 1:09:06Speaker 10: such a great story that if you detach yourself, if
- 1:09:09Speaker 10: you don't know who these characters are, if you don't
- 1:09:12Speaker 10: know what it's based on, it's still such an effective
- 1:09:15Speaker 10: story because it's such drama. Like, it's just so heightened
- 1:09:19Speaker 10: drama that it works.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: Hello, everybody.

- 1:10:51Speaker 12: Yeah, and just heads up, I'm not going to be
- 1:10:54Speaker 12: able to get as specific about every individual song and
- 1:10:57Speaker 12: scene and even the artist. I'm just like, that's okay.
- 1:11:03Speaker 9: It's really fascinating. It's really interesting.
- 1:11:05Speaker 12: I'm going, oh my God, I'm going to be so
- 1:11:06Speaker 12: bad at this. So I'm just going to give you
- 1:11:08Speaker 12: blanket statements.
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:11:10Speaker 12: So then this was also a time when I was
- 1:11:16Speaker 12: getting into dance professionally and considering training some more in
- 1:11:20Speaker 12: London and everything. And this movie Fame came out.
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:11:23Speaker 15: I loved it.
- 1:11:24Speaker 9: It changed everything.
- 1:11:26Speaker 12: I loved this movie. I loved the story. I loved
- 1:11:28Speaker 12: the music. And I just was drawn to it. in
- 1:11:32Speaker 12: a different kind of way.
- 1:11:34Speaker 9: Just hope you don't turn out like Coco, but all right.
- 1:11:35Speaker 12: Right, exactly. Well, it was interesting because it's a cautionary tale.
- 1:11:40Speaker 9: It is, like it is, and it's tough.
- 1:11:41Speaker 10: Girls, obviously, in the industry, girls are still going through that.
- 1:11:45Speaker 9: As we know, finally, we're getting some sort of.
- 1:11:47Speaker 12: So are boys, trust me. Oh, yeah, definitely.
- 1:11:49Speaker 9: It's not just girls.
- 1:11:50Speaker 12: So, yeah, I mean, I fortunately kind of, I don't know,
- 1:11:55Speaker 12: skidded over all that stuff.
- 1:11:57Speaker 32: Thank the powers that be.
- 1:11:58Speaker 12: But I think that I had... I just had an
- 1:12:00Speaker 12: instinct to kind of like... see that and not I
- 1:12:04Speaker 12: wasn't so career driven that it was like you're willing
- 1:12:07Speaker 12: to put.
- 1:12:08Speaker 9: That above everything else even.
- 1:12:09Speaker 12: Your own safety exactly or integrity or whatever.
- 1:12:15Speaker 21: Baby look at me and tell me what you see
- 1:12:22Speaker 21: you ain't seen the best of me yet give me
- 1:12:26Speaker 21: time I'll make you forget.
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: People will see me and cry I'm gonna make it
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: to heaven Light up the sky like a flame I'm
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: gonna live forever Baby, remember my name Remember, remember, remember Remember, remember, remember.
- 1:13:38Speaker 39: Me tight cause you can make it right you can
- 1:13:43Speaker 39: shoot me straight to the top give me love and
- 1:13:48Speaker 39: take all i got baby i'll be tough but just not.
- 1:13:56Speaker 12: Enough A soundtrack that I love, and I haven't listened
- 1:16:03Speaker 12: to it for years and years, but I was drawn
- 1:16:07Speaker 12: to was from a movie called Baghdad Cafe. Do you
- 1:16:10Speaker 12: remember that movie?
- 1:16:11Speaker 9: I remember it, yeah.
- 1:16:12Speaker 12: I was like looking it up this morning because I
- 1:16:14Speaker 12: was like, I used to listen to the soundtrack over
- 1:16:17Speaker 12: and over and over again.
- 1:16:18Speaker 30: Really.
- 1:16:20Speaker 12: Kind of quiet, bluesy. It's an odd story about this
- 1:16:24Speaker 12: overweight German woman who ends up in the middle of
- 1:16:26Speaker 12: the desert. Her husband is taken off and she sort
- 1:16:31Speaker 12: of changes this rundown cafe and as a result she
- 1:16:35Speaker 12: changes and the character she's involved with changes. It's a
- 1:16:38Speaker 12: really cool little movie and the soundtrack is fantastic.
- 1:16:42Speaker 40: A desert road from Vegas to nowhere Someplace better than
- 1:16:52Speaker 40: where you've been. A coffee machine that needs some fixing.
- 1:17:04Speaker 40: In a little cafe just around the bend.
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: I am calling you Can't you hear me? I am calling.
- 1:17:31Speaker 32: You A hot, dry wind blows right.
- 1:17:44Speaker 37: Through me.
- 1:17:48Speaker 40: The baby's crying and I can't speak But we both know.
- 1:17:56Speaker 41: A change is coming Coming closer, sweet relief.
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: I am calling you. I know you hear me. I
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: am calling Calling you Calling you I am calling you
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: I know you hear me I am calling you.
- 1:19:38Speaker 23: Calling you A desert road from Vegas to nowhere.
- 1:19:52Speaker 40: Someplace better than where you've been.
- 1:19:59Speaker 42: A coffee machine that needs some fixing In a little
- 1:20:07Speaker 42: cafe just around the bend A hot dry wind blows
- 1:20:17Speaker 42: right through me The baby's crying and I can't.
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: Sleep And I can feel a change is coming.
- 1:20:35Speaker 43: Coming closer so we release.
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: I am calling you can't you hear me I am
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: calling you oh oh oh Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- 1:21:55Speaker 12: And then most recently, probably, it started out as a play.
- 1:22:01Speaker 3: I guess.
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: No, didn't it?
- 1:22:03Speaker 9: Excuse me.
- 1:22:04Speaker 12: It started out as a movie and became a play
- 1:22:05Speaker 12: on Broadway once.
- 1:22:06Speaker 9: That keeps happening now. Once, yeah.
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: Once.
- 1:22:08Speaker 12: I just love the soundtrack for Once.
- 1:22:11Speaker 23: Are you really here?
- 1:22:14Speaker 34: Or am I dreaming?
- 1:22:17Speaker 23: I can't tell dreams from truth For.
- 1:22:23Speaker 12: It's been so long.
- 1:22:26Speaker 17: Since I have seen you I can hardly remember your face.
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: Anymore When I get really lonely And the distance calls
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: its only silence.
- 1:22:49Speaker 23: I think of you smiling With pride in your.
- 1:22:58Speaker 34: That side.
- 1:23:36Speaker 23: Are you really sure that you'd believe me.
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: When others say I lie? I wonder if you could.
- 1:23:51Speaker 23: Ever despise me.
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: A better one.
- 1:24:03Speaker 16: To satisfy you for your everything.
- 1:24:09Speaker 9: To me.
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: There's lots.
- 1:25:55Speaker 12: I love soundtracks.
- 1:25:56Speaker 9: I have a whole bunch.
- 1:25:57Speaker 12: I was like going through all my soundtrack CDs. I
- 1:26:00Speaker 12: still have them on CD.
- 1:26:01Speaker 10: As I'm holding mine, I can't call you out for that.
- 1:26:03Speaker 9: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:26:04Speaker 12: But these were, you know, just going through them right now,
- 1:26:07Speaker 12: those are probably Philadelphia was wonderful. Mambo Kings.
- 1:26:12Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 1:26:12Speaker 12: Talking about a specific genre of music. I loved Vangelis,
- 1:26:18Speaker 12: you know, 1492.
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:26:20Speaker 12: Um i thought that was a very powerful instrumental soundtrack
- 1:26:24Speaker 12: very powerful um anyway that's that's i'm not gonna even
- 1:26:28Speaker 12: try to attempt to discuss the details.
- 1:26:37Speaker 10: Don't apologize oh my god i'm in awe i.
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: Lived with mike girley for you know six years and
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: so i thought like you know.
- 1:26:45Speaker 12: He You are a savant. Well, it's really bad. He
- 1:26:53Speaker 12: is in his home in L.A. He has a studio
- 1:26:58Speaker 12: in his basement. And they have lots of parties and
- 1:27:02Speaker 12: big gatherings. You guys are really great at just having
- 1:27:05Speaker 12: these incredible gatherings. His wife is an incredible cook, as
- 1:27:08Speaker 12: are you. But they'll always end up doing a jam
- 1:27:11Speaker 12: session in the basement. And it is fantastic.
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh.
- 1:27:16Speaker 12: You go down there and I sit in the saddle.
- 1:27:20Speaker 12: And it's heaven. It's absolute heaven watching these musicians jam.
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: Way too much gear.
- 1:27:26Speaker 10: Well, I think that's what most, again, anything that becomes
- 1:27:30Speaker 10: a weird hobby then becomes a weird obsession and Anything
- 1:27:33Speaker 10: you can buy tech-wise as I continue to buy mics
- 1:27:36Speaker 10: and gadgets. Recording, like, yeah, I have tubs of old
- 1:27:39Speaker 10: microphones that I don't even use now. So, yeah, it
- 1:27:42Speaker 10: becomes a weird obsession, buying more gadgets.
- 1:27:46Speaker 12: You get tons of guitars and stuff hanging up. It's fantastic, though.
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: It's fun.
- 1:27:50Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: It's very nice of you to say. No, it's great.
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: It's really fun. It's a 16-year-old's dream, as Cameron says.
- 1:27:58Speaker 9: It's come full circle. Now you actually have, which as
- 1:28:01Speaker 9: a kid, you're like, I just want a guitar.
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: I just want a guitar. I got all these guitars. See,
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: I didn't have an electric guitar when I was a kid.
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: I didn't even have, I didn't really even have an
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: electric guitar until I was like 30, 35.
- 1:28:10Speaker 9: Had to learn to play the old fashioned way.
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: That's right, baby.
- 1:28:14Speaker 37: All right.
- 1:28:14Speaker 9: Well, thanks for coming on and doing that.
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: This is the best one of these we've ever done.
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:28:19Speaker 12: I'm so glad that you agreed to do this because
- 1:28:23Speaker 12: I knew that being the musician that you are and
- 1:28:27Speaker 12: as knowledgeable as you are in music. I may as
- 1:28:29Speaker 12: well not have been here.
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: That's not true.
- 1:28:31Speaker 9: I was ready to get up early.
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: Everybody loves you.
- 1:28:36Speaker 10: But yeah, do you have stuff you're working on you
- 1:28:38Speaker 10: want to tell people or appearances? or anything you want
- 1:28:40Speaker 10: to get out there to the world?
- 1:28:44Speaker 12: Yeah. No, I don't have anything coming up right away.
- 1:28:46Speaker 12: Any appearances?
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: I'm doing a play, it looks like. I hope it
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: all comes together, but so far we have it. Is
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: this the musical or no?
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: This is no musical. This is something I don't know
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: what I told you about. No, I don't think you have.
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: For all you out there, this is breaking news. I've
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: only told a few people, but I might as well
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: go over the airwaves. The writer-producer will appreciate this. There
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: was this special in 1978 called the Star Wars Holiday Special.
- 1:29:13Speaker 3: Oh, I see.
- 1:29:18Speaker 9: I'm very familiar with it.
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: You did mention this. It is one of the weirdest.
- 1:29:23Speaker 10: I couldn't watch it.
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: I started to watch it.
- 1:29:25Speaker 10: You represent most of the world. Everyone kind of has
- 1:29:29Speaker 10: watched a few minutes of it.
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: One of the weirdest things ever to be committed to
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: a television, the airwaves on television. And it's all about
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: how all of these incredibly cool, qualified, talented people were
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: all thrown together.
- 1:29:43Speaker 9: And somehow it still came out well.
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: Tone deaf mishmash of like, wait, this is, wait, what,
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: what is this? And all these, like all these writers
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: are all, they all had great careers and all these
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: directors and whatever, you know, actors and stuff. And it's
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: this weird piece of seventies television history that is, is almost,
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: it's like Dada performance art.
- 1:30:06Speaker 10: I mean, it's, it's coming off of that when the
- 1:30:08Speaker 10: tail end of that variety show and like people, they
- 1:30:11Speaker 10: don't really do that now. Now we just have like
- 1:30:13Speaker 10: the talent show and vote for people. But like, We
- 1:30:16Speaker 10: don't have the variety show thing.
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: Yeah, and we did, and that was such a big
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: deal in the 70s.
- 1:30:19Speaker 9: Yeah, it was what they did.
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: It was so many big– Sonny and Cher and Carol Burnett.
- 1:30:22Speaker 9: It's Donny and Osmond.
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: Donny and Marie.
- 1:30:23Speaker 9: Donny and Marie doing the Star Wars special.
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: Essentially, which also exists. It was such a strange– and
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: it's a great comment to me on the over-merchandising, marketization–
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: is that a word? Of the film business. It is now.
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: And this is when they were trying to figure out
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: what to do. Anyways, our play is about the making
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: of it and who's involved and all the people involved
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: in it. And I have to say, I love the
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: script and the writer is really terrific. And it's called
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: Special and we're doing it in Hollywood, you know, like
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: around Christmas time.
- 1:30:58Speaker 9: Have you cast Art Kearney yet?
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: I don't think Art's going to be in this one.
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: Damn it. But B is definitely in there.
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: Oh, I hope.
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: And as we say, may the force be Arthur.
- 1:31:08Speaker 42: Yeah, well.
- 1:31:10Speaker 10: To me, the only saving grace is that animated piece
- 1:31:13Speaker 10: in the middle is amazing.
- 1:31:16Speaker 9: You can pull that out and show it to people
- 1:31:18Speaker 9: and they'll love it.
- 1:31:19Speaker 10: Everything around it is just confusion.
- 1:31:22Speaker 9: What am I watching?
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: That is a very central point in the piece.
- 1:31:26Speaker 9: It's right at the halfway point.
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: The writer has his finger on the pulse of what
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: people like, what people think is crazy, what we all go, what?
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: They did what? And... You know, it's just, to me,
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: a really funny bit of, in a sort of similar
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: vein as the disaster artist, where you take something that
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: is like, how did this get made? And then we
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: go like, oh, this is how it got made.
- 1:31:49Speaker 9: I'll show you. You still won't believe it.
- 1:31:51Speaker 12: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:31:53Speaker 9: We'll definitely look for that. And I was, again, my
- 1:31:58Speaker 9: go-to is the final track here. The whole world is celebrating.
- 1:32:05Speaker 9: Like there is no G even on the title here.
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: Celebrating.
- 1:32:08Speaker 9: It's the 80s. The rules were loose.
- 1:32:11Speaker 10: So yeah, that's again, in my head, I only hear
- 1:32:14Speaker 10: the song with credits rolling. So I figured we need
- 1:32:16Speaker 10: to go out, roll the credits in your head as
- 1:32:18Speaker 10: you're listening. So I think that needs to be our
- 1:32:20Speaker 10: final track.
- 1:32:22Speaker 9: Otherwise, thank you for being here.
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: Great to talk to you.
- 1:32:24Speaker 10: Yeah, good to talk to you.
- 1:32:25Speaker 9: That was fun.
- 1:32:25Speaker 10: That was really fun.
- 1:32:26Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 1:32:26Speaker 39: Really, really fun.
- 1:32:27Speaker 10: I'll remind you guys to get a life. We'll provide
- 1:32:30Speaker 10: the soundtrack.
- 1:32:43Speaker 26: Going to a great big party The whole world is
- 1:32:47Speaker 26: gonna turn out Everybody's there for a.
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: Good time People getting.
- 1:32:53Speaker 26: Ready to shout New York City, Moscow We're all getting
- 1:32:58Speaker 26: ready for a ball Make the all three seem like
- 1:33:03Speaker 26: no Celebrating And now it's a final moment For me
- 1:33:17Speaker 26: to take the whole world And celebrate with you Don't
- 1:34:02Speaker 26: worry about tomorrow Don't have some reason why Just stop,
- 1:34:11Speaker 26: take a look at yourself Take a look.
- 1:34:16Speaker 22: At yourself People getting right out of bed.
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: The whole world is celebrating. Tonight is about romance. Hey, baby.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: The whole world is celebrating. Yeah, you got everything in
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: the sky. The whole world is celebrating. Girl, it's the
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: love of God.
- 1:34:52Speaker 26: Cause I know it's just a natural thing Maybe once
- 1:34:59Speaker 26: in a thousand years, yeah Don't try to explain us
- 1:35:06Speaker 26: that subject Cause tonight the message is clear The whole
- 1:35:11Speaker 26: world is celebrating.
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: People getting rid.
- 1:35:18Speaker 15: Of the dead.
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: Tonight is the final romance. Hey, baby. The whole world
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: is out of faith. Gazing at the thing in the sky.
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: The whole world is out of faith. The brother keeps
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: his lover goodbye. The whole world is out of faith.
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: People get ready, yeah. The whole world.
- 1:35:45Speaker 26: Is out of faith. Tonight is the final romance. Everybody's home.
- 1:36:11Speaker 12: All right.
