Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:21everyone. If it looks like I have just
- 0:24been rained on, that's because I have been.
- 0:26It's torrentially downpouring here in Sydney.
- 0:29It is our winter now in Australia and the southern
- 0:31hemisphere, and when I was walking from my car to the
- 0:35office, I got rained on. So here we are.
- 0:38All right, let's get into the stories for today.
- 0:40The first story that I have for you guys is that Haley Bieber is
- 0:44winning the Internet back after her satirical take on on her
- 0:48Vogue interview. Hailey Bieber is on the cover of
- 0:50Vogue and to support the cover, she did a What's in My Purse
- 0:54series on social media with Vogue.
- 0:55And it was essentially like a satirical take on the rumors
- 0:58online about her. And it was actually really
- 1:01funny. My favorite part was she pulled
- 1:03out like 10 iPhones from this purse and she was like.
- 1:07This is my phone. These are a couple more that I
- 1:10keep on me and I really just use them for a lot of the simple
- 1:16stuff like surfing anonymously, commenting, stalking, viewing
- 1:20girls pages, making multiple accounts.
- 1:25You know, I think this series was the best way to respond to
- 1:29the shitstorm that has been swirling around her for the
- 1:33last, I mean, several years, but especially the last few months
- 1:37with that like quote UN quote, like 7 part TikTok series that
- 1:40came out. Reminder, I was one of the first
- 1:43to cover this series and in like its entirety to cover it from
- 1:47like where it originated from, which was YouTube because I'm a
- 1:50YouTube girly first and foremost.
- 1:52OK, that's how you know, if someone's chronically online, do
- 1:55they spend time on YouTube? Do they spend time Reddit, all
- 1:58of those other platforms? Anyways?
- 2:00So yes, it originated on YouTube.
- 2:02It was a YouTube video that somebody chopped up and posted
- 2:05into a quote UN quote 7 part series on TikTok and it
- 2:08absolutely exploded. The narrative just ran away from
- 2:13her. It was about how like she had
- 2:14stalked Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber's life for like years and
- 2:18then finally basically got Justin Bieber.
- 2:21It was very sensationalized. And I'm not even really a Hailey
- 2:24Bieber fan. Like, I'm quite neutral on her,
- 2:27but the way that the Internet treats her is so unfair and
- 2:32honestly really disgusting. So I really like that she kind
- 2:35of took her power back a little bit in this satirical way.
- 2:38And it's working. Like it's turning a lot of
- 2:41people's opinion on her. I've seen so many comments from
- 2:43people who are like, OK, this interview turned me back on to
- 2:48you. And isn't that kind of the point
- 2:50of like vanity press? And that's what Vogue is, right?
- 2:53You're, I mean, I'm not saying that Vogue isn't good
- 2:55journalism. I think sometimes it can be, but
- 2:57you know, is not sitting down for like a Barbara Walters, you
- 3:01know, let's like talk about some really big controversy.
- 3:04I need to kind of set the record straight situation, right?
- 3:07Like this was a vanity press piece and I think they did it so
- 3:12well. Like this is what vanity press
- 3:14pieces are all about is addressing, I guess like the
- 3:18subtle controversies or some of the narrative around that
- 3:21celebrity and helping them flip it.
- 3:23And I mean, this was the best way they could have done it.
- 3:26This like, satirical take on the Internet, rumors about her.
- 3:29It was very smart of Vogue. I love how she went along with
- 3:32it. And yeah, it was a great
- 3:34concept. But of course, we couldn't talk
- 3:36about Haley Bieber on the cover of Vogue without talking about
- 3:39Justin Bieber and his caption. So there was some drama with
- 3:44Haley's Vogue cover and it was of course started by Justin, her
- 3:47husband. He posted about her cover on his
- 3:50Instagram and in the caption he wrote this.
- 3:52Yo this reminds me of when Haley and I got into a huge fight.
- 3:56I told Hales that she would never be on the cover of Vogue.
- 4:00Yikes. I know.
- 4:01So mean, for some reason, because I felt so disrespected,
- 4:04I thought I got to get even. I think as we mature, we realize
- 4:07that we're not helping anything by getting even.
- 4:10We're honestly just prolonging what we really want, which is
- 4:12intimacy and connection. So baby, you already know, but
- 4:15forgive me for saying you wouldn't get a cover because I
- 4:18was clearly sadly mistaken. Justin.
- 4:22Oh my God. OK, first of all, everybody's
- 4:24pointing out that he said sadly mistake.
- 4:26He obviously meant sorely mistaken, but he wrote sadly
- 4:29mistaken, Mistaken. That was an unfortunate
- 4:32grammatical slash, like typo error.
- 4:34But OK. I know that Justin has been
- 4:37going through a hard time. I know it's very obvious he's
- 4:41struggling right now. That's why I don't really cover
- 4:43things related to him. There's so much news about him
- 4:45all the time, especially related to like what's happening on
- 4:48TikTok and social media rumors and stuff.
- 4:50But I have chosen not to cover the stuff around him because
- 4:53it's very clear that he's like going through something and I do
- 4:57have a lot of empathy for that. But he is Haley's number one
- 5:03hater and he ruins so many of her big, big big moments.
- 5:08Whether he's showing up to like her huge launch events literally
- 5:12dressed like he just rolled out of bed.
- 5:14He looks so cranky he ends up not showing up for her.
- 5:19He writes captions like this, airing out their dirty laundry,
- 5:23revealing the not so perfect image of their marriage behind
- 5:26in the scenes. I cannot imagine how embarrassed
- 5:31she must have been about that caption.
- 5:33Like this was such a huge moment.
- 5:35The Internet was finally speaking positively about her
- 5:38again for the first time in like a really long time.
- 5:40It's weird with Haley, right? Cuz like, on one hand, we do
- 5:43speak positively about her with like Road and how she's like
- 5:46quite a trendsetter in the beauty and fashion space.
- 5:50And then on the other hand, everybody just shits on her all
- 5:52the time for being like a Justin Bieber stalker.
- 5:56The interview in the social segments really open people's
- 5:59minds to I guess, like who she might actually be behind the
- 6:03scenes and how there has been this like really harsh narrative
- 6:06crafted around her. And then her husband, who is
- 6:09supposed to be her biggest supporter posts that.
- 6:14It's also like big red flag vibes.
- 6:16Like, he's admitting that he throws very low blows in rights.
- 6:20Like, I can't imagine if Sean and I were in a fight and he
- 6:23threw something out at me that was like something that I wanted
- 6:27so desperately telling me I'd never get it.
- 6:29Like if he was like, I know that your business will never
- 6:31actually be successful. I don't know it that would make
- 6:34me be like, who the fuck have I married?
- 6:36You know, like, you should never be fighting dirty like that in a
- 6:39marriage. It really freaks me out that he
- 6:43would say that kind of stuff. And it makes me sad.
- 6:45And I'm sad for her that her Vogue moment has been kind of
- 6:49overshadowed, followed by that drama, by that caption.
- 6:52He has amended the caption. He did change it.
- 6:55And again, it's very clear that he is going through something
- 6:57and he is not well. But you truly will never make me
- 7:00believe that Haley and Justin are really that happy behind the
- 7:04scenes, unfortunately. And I want them both to be
- 7:07happy, you know, But I just, I don't know.
- 7:09From what we see, I can't believe the propaganda.
- 7:12OK, The next story that I have for you guys is I'm going to
- 7:16break down the Duolingo AI social media going off TikTok
- 7:21drama. I'm so sorry that I keep
- 7:23covering AI, but it's such a big part of Internet culture now.
- 7:26And it's like what I said yesterday where it's like all of
- 7:29a sudden something flipped in technology and in media and in
- 7:33news and in business, and everything is dominated by
- 7:37discussions around AI. So anyways, I'm sure some of you
- 7:41guys were across this, at least the first part of it, But at the
- 7:44end of April, Duolingo announced that it was going to become an
- 7:48AI First company. So an e-mail that the CEO
- 7:52released to the team, they posted it as well on LinkedIn.
- 7:56I've had this in Q&A's and many meetings, but I wanted to make
- 7:59it official. Duolingo is going to be AI
- 8:01first, and then the e-mail continues.
- 8:04We'll be rolling out a few constructive constraints to help
- 8:08guide this shift. We'll gradually stop using
- 8:10contractors to do work that AI can handle.
- 8:14AI use will be part of what we evaluate in performance reviews.
- 8:17Headcount will only be given if a team cannot automate more of
- 8:21their work. Most functions will have
- 8:23specific initiatives to fundamentally change how they
- 8:26work. So given that a huge part of
- 8:29Duolingo's recent success and relevancy in general is thank to
- 8:33its social media strategy on TikTok, TikTok users have let
- 8:37the company know that they did not appreciate this change.
- 8:41And I don't have data on this, but I'm going to say they
- 8:43probably lost a lot of users after that announcement.
- 8:46I think a lot of people deleted their app, and it's so crazy
- 8:49when you think about a service like Duolingo.
- 8:52It provides language learning, right?
- 8:54Language is so innately part of human nature, and it requires so
- 8:59much cultural and social context to actually learn.
- 9:03It's wild to think that Duolingo is trying to limit its human
- 9:07touch in this practice when human interaction is literally
- 9:11what language is. So on the backlash and feedback,
- 9:15a Rep for Duolingo told Fast Company Quote.
- 9:18A lot of the feedback we've seen comes from a place of passion
- 9:21for a Duolingo, which we really appreciate.
- 9:23To clarify, AI isn't replacing our learning experts.
- 9:27It's a tool they use to make Duolingo better.
- 9:30Everything we create with AI is guided by our team of learning
- 9:33design experts. We're committed to using AI with
- 9:36human oversight to help us deliver on our mission to make
- 9:39the best education in the world available to everyone.
- 9:42I do think companies are at this weird intersect right now where
- 9:48they're trying to figure out, especially if they have investor
- 9:51backing, where they're trying to figure out the balance between
- 9:53keeping customers happy while also keeping investors happy.
- 9:57Because the reality is that the business world, I mean, we
- 10:01talked about this yesterday when I was talking about like
- 10:02productivity and how AI is literally just going to make it
- 10:06so that we are required to be even more productive and work
- 10:08even faster and produce more and all of that.
- 10:10The business world is so obsessed with AI because of
- 10:14those benefits and because of, you know, of course, the money
- 10:18that they can see that they will be saving or, or that they could
- 10:20be making if things are 10 times faster or whatever.
- 10:23So companies are struggling to strike this balance because when
- 10:26they announce that they're using more AI in their technology, in
- 10:31their work practices, in their business, customers are unhappy
- 10:35about that. Like, we do not want to be
- 10:37interacting with computers. And there's actually a really
- 10:39interesting case study, Klarna, a couple years ago, like right
- 10:44at the beginning, they took away 700 customer service reps and
- 10:48replaced them with AI. And just in the last couple of
- 10:51months, they've had to announce that they are hiring again for
- 10:55many of those roles. And they basically said you
- 10:57cannot have the same quality of customer service experience if
- 11:01there is not a human who is speaking to your customer, which
- 11:05like, of course. OK.
- 11:07So yes, I think that companies are struggling to strike that
- 11:10balance between keeping their customers happy who do not want
- 11:12to be speaking to computers and do not want to be supporting
- 11:16like AI first companies, whatever the fuck that means,
- 11:19while also keeping their investors happy because that is
- 11:22part of, you know, businesses growing.
- 11:24So after a ton of backlash, Duolingo returned with a
- 11:27message. It wiped its TikTok account
- 11:29clean. Also it's Instagram I believe
- 11:31and returned on Tuesday with this very weird video.
- 11:36Hello night, I'm a part of doing your social team and it's time
- 11:41you all know the truth. Enough is enough.
- 11:45If you have seen this video. Oh no my planners won't.
- 11:49I've had it with the Seenos and those in power.
- 11:52It is time we show them who's in charge.
- 11:55You can't outdo the Duo. You know that one time where Duo
- 11:59died? That wasn't a start, it was a
- 12:02signal. It's giving Anonymous like the
- 12:05hacker squad, how they would do those videos where it was all
- 12:08distorted and they were wearing a mask.
- 12:10The response to this video is not good.
- 12:13People feel like it is minimizing the announcement they
- 12:17just made. It's degrading to the customers
- 12:19who were raising genuine concerns about the service that
- 12:22Duolingo, a language learning app, is going to be providing.
- 12:26If it's becoming a quote UN quote AI first company.
- 12:28And regardless if people are misunderstanding what that
- 12:31means, that's an external comms issue then I am sure that
- 12:35Duolingo has a comms team. I'm sure they have APR team.
- 12:38I'm sure they have an internal comms team.
- 12:40Like that's a comms issue then that you did not accurately
- 12:44convey to customers what AI first meant.
- 12:47Because if anybody hears the words AI first, like, what do
- 12:50you think they're going to assume that means means?
- 12:53So this whole situation and then how Duolingo responded, I think
- 12:56just proves what a lot of social experts have been saying for
- 13:00years, which is that Duolingo strategy worked in the early
- 13:03days of TikTok because it was kind of unique.
- 13:06I mean, I know that Wendy's was like the first brand to do
- 13:09really unhinged comments and stuff like that on Twitter.
- 13:12But you know, Duolingo really Lenten on TikTok and they had
- 13:15the big owl mascot. They were really unique and how
- 13:18they showed up on TikTok. But the unhinged stick, it's
- 13:21dated and it's it's cringe now. And it's also hard to keep it
- 13:25going in the face of corporate scandal.
- 13:28There have been a lot of scandals that Duolingo has had
- 13:31over the last couple of years, partly because they are so
- 13:33visible, because of the success of their social channels, of
- 13:37course, and because of this presence that they've
- 13:39cultivated, this kind of personality that they've
- 13:42cultivated online, this brand personality.
- 13:44Like they struggle to figure out, I think, how to address
- 13:47scandals and situations like serious topics on social media
- 13:51because it doesn't fit into the narrative or like the brand
- 13:54personality that they've cultivated.
- 13:56So then we just end up with what we got on Tuesday.
- 13:59Joe Berkowitz for Fast Company writes.
- 14:01Now the Duolingo social team is trying to have it both ways,
- 14:05taking an ironic postmodern approach to address a serious
- 14:09issue instead of breezing past it without the company
- 14:13confronting the controversy. Elsewhere, though, the subtext
- 14:16of every cute social post is that the customers unhappy with
- 14:19Duolingos AI direction are not worth taking seriously.
- 14:23We can't just move on and pretend everything's fine, The
- 14:25mask wearing Duolingo employee says at one point in the new
- 14:28video he's flicking at the idea of taking accountability for the
- 14:32AI fallout. But in the video, it's meant to
- 14:35be a rejoinder from the Duolingo social team to the faceless
- 14:38entities above who've made them look bad.
- 14:41It's difficult to parse the exact message here.
- 14:43The video is somehow simultaneously defensive,
- 14:46satirical, avoidant, and flippant.
- 14:48Though it may be the opening salvo in a broader message, For
- 14:52now, it seems like 1/2 baked rush response to a very real
- 14:56issue. The Duolingo brand version of
- 14:58just moving on and pretending everything's fine.
- 15:01And Duolingo is really trapped in, you know, that cycle of
- 15:05being desperate for virality. Because I'm sure that the goal
- 15:08posts have kept moving and moving and moving as the brand
- 15:12found more and more success online.
- 15:14But the reality of TikTok and just social media in general is
- 15:18that you will have virality for like a fleeting moment, and then
- 15:22you'll have a flop era. And then you'll come back up and
- 15:25you'll be viral and you'll be successful and people will
- 15:28recognize you again. And then you'll be back in your
- 15:29flop era. And it's just a roller coaster
- 15:33and never ending. You can never stay fully on top.
- 15:36And I think if Duolingo had just come out and address this
- 15:39properly without some weird, ominous, unclear message video
- 15:44that they're doing, they would have stayed relatively on top.
- 15:47But at some point, people are just going to stop interacting
- 15:51with the brand because they keep getting themselves into these
- 15:54messes while they chase like these viral moments.
- 15:57And then they don't respond properly because they're trying
- 16:00to make their responses A viral moment.
- 16:02They are stuck in like a social media nightmare.
- 16:06For real. I feel bad for the social team
- 16:09actually. OK, the last word that I have
- 16:11for you guys is I need to unpack or at least share my opinion on
- 16:15the quote UN quote on Chic debate on TikTok In early April,
- 16:19a creator named Tara Colleen posted 2 videos where she listed
- 16:23things that she finds quote incredibly on Chic.
- 16:27Even though this was posted over a month ago, her first video has
- 16:30blown up over the past couple of days and there is now so much
- 16:34discussion online about the concept of what's chic, what's
- 16:37not and in general just young people's obsession with seeming
- 16:41chic. But this is definitely not just
- 16:44an Australian epidemic right now.
- 16:46This is a problem or like an obsession among young white
- 16:49women online across the board. And it's been really interesting
- 16:53to watch because for me growing up in the 90's, the 2000, I knew
- 16:58the concept of chic as reserved for people that expressed
- 17:01themselves and really unique and individual ways.
- 17:06It was not a concept that you could actually obtain.
- 17:09Like it was very much like in the Eye of the beholder and it
- 17:12was almost like a protected title.
- 17:15Like you could not just strive to be chic, like someone had to
- 17:19label you as chic. And it was all about your aura,
- 17:21your attitude. It was a quality that you
- 17:25possessed because of how you lived your life in such an
- 17:30incredibly authentic way. So any aesthetic, any person
- 17:34could be chic. Like it wasn't just some, you
- 17:37know, like elegant, wealthy, skinny white person that was
- 17:41chic. And so because of that, I just,
- 17:44you know what it reminds me of? OK, I talked about this like
- 17:46last year, so I don't know how many of you guys will remember
- 17:48this, but I talked about how growing up, I don't know about
- 17:51you guys, but there was not this belief that the average person
- 17:57would own designer bags or designer clothes.
- 18:00And it reminds me of this whole chic situation because growing
- 18:04up in the nineties, 2000s, like there was not an expectation
- 18:07that you could actually attain chicness.
- 18:10So people didn't like strive to be chic, you know, because that
- 18:13was, like I said, almost like a protected title that was
- 18:16reserved for somebody to call you that.
- 18:19And it was based on so many different factors and largely
- 18:22just you being like authentically yourself and
- 18:24having confidence. And this, you know, this aura
- 18:28that like this Genesee qua that you just could not put your
- 18:30finger on in that way. Like the concept of chic didn't
- 18:34really exist to begin with because it was not something you
- 18:37can necessarily pinpoint. But now it's become this term
- 18:41that is weaponized by white women as my friend Crystal
- 18:44Andrews so poignantly put in our text exchange this morning to
- 18:48quote craft superiority tears in their own in Group.
- 18:52And I think social media and of course, capitalism.
- 18:55I mean, everything goes hand in hand with capitalism.
- 18:57But you know, have latched on to this kind of like hierarchical
- 19:01war that's going on right now in this infighting with like white
- 19:04women who like basically are trying to out shake each other.
- 19:07And it's aiding in pushing this forward because now it's being
- 19:12sold back to us. So we're chic if we wear like
- 19:16dainty gold jewelry, neutral business casual clothing, We
- 19:20furnish our homes with minimalist design.
- 19:23There's like a specific aesthetic now to quote UN quote
- 19:26chic. Whereas before chic was like a
- 19:28feeling. It was an aura.
- 19:30It was a vibe. You know, it was not something
- 19:33you could buy and conformity and uniform.
- 19:38Those are like the of chic, but somehow it's become the modern
- 19:42definition of like what a chic girl looks like is wearing, you
- 19:46know, the clean girl make up, the slicked back bun, the
- 19:49neutral business casual Blazers and clothing, dainty gold
- 19:53jewelry, glossy lips. Like you guys know, you guys
- 19:57understand what I'm saying. And it's so interesting because
- 20:00it's completely flipped, like it's the complete opposite.
- 20:02I think of what chic used to truly mean.
- 20:05But I also think something that is missing from this
- 20:08conversation is how the concept of chic is just another example
- 20:12of how the Internet and culture in general are leaning more
- 20:16conservative and we're buying into it without necessarily
- 20:19realizing the concept of chic. I mean, as I've already
- 20:22mentioned, is being used interchangeably to describe like
- 20:25a very specific uniform aesthetic and personality.
- 20:29It's neutral, it's boring, it's watered down and it's telling
- 20:33women if you want to achieve this sought after label of being
- 20:37chic, you have to conform. Don't stand out, be muted, don't
- 20:41strive, don't be loud or assertive.
- 20:44Be demure, be gentle, be tonal, be neutral.
- 20:48And that's not even scratching the surface of how this whole
- 20:50debate of like what's chic, what's not is so rooted in, you
- 20:55know, classism, racism, elitism, all of the isms.
- 20:59OK, But truly the most chic thing that a person could do is
- 21:03to just say nothing at all. Don't even be on TikTok.
- 21:07That is the most chic thing that a person could do.
- 21:10So to all of the young women who are obsessed with being chic and
- 21:13making content around being that girl, it girl, chic girl,
- 21:18whatever this like epidemic that we see of just young people
- 21:22being desperate to be chic, Like what happened to wanting to be
- 21:24cool? I don't know, like I just when I
- 21:27was young, when I was in my 20s, you know, like I never thought
- 21:31about being chic a day of my life because I was just trying
- 21:33to have fun and party and figure out my life.
- 21:36I think this is possibly just another example of, you know,
- 21:39this like generational divide and the longer we kind of sit in
- 21:43Internet culture and it like seeps into everything about
- 21:46regular culture. I'm not so convinced on the
- 21:49generational wars or the generational divides that I
- 21:52think we saw earlier on in like Internet culture.
- 21:55But I do think this is a strong example.
- 21:57I know there's always conversations around like Gen.
- 21:59Z and how they're really different than other generations
- 22:03because they're, they've had phones forever.
- 22:04So you know, they don't like club culture is dead, for
- 22:07example, right? So people aren't partying as
- 22:09much. Obviously nobody has any money.
- 22:11But regardless, like everything's so expensive.
- 22:13No one has any money. And like, they're not going to
- 22:15go and get messy because people are going to film it and put it
- 22:17on TikTok. Like that's a very real fear.
- 22:19And I genuinely have a lot of empathy for that.
- 22:23But I do feel like this is another very strong kind of
- 22:26generational thing where we're seeing a lot of young women get
- 22:30really wrapped up into this. I think a huge part of it is now
- 22:32any generation that comes up has had cell phones and social media
- 22:37from the time they're like born, basically.
- 22:39And so you're watching these influencers and you're trying to
- 22:44like, emulate their lives, right?
- 22:45And it's more accessible than ever to emulate those lives
- 22:49because we have things. I mean, when I was growing up,
- 22:51like I'm sure there was fast fashion, but like e-commerce,
- 22:55for example, was really not a thing.
- 22:56So like if you saw some chic ass shirt that you wanted to wear
- 23:00that your favorite influencer was wearing, like you couldn't
- 23:02just like buy that, you know, you had to like go to a store.
- 23:04So it's really different. I think the democratization of
- 23:08shopping, the rise of fast beauty, fast fashion, fast
- 23:12consumerism in general, the influence of social media and
- 23:16how everything is obviously a highlight reel.
- 23:18Like, I think young people grow up and they see influencers and
- 23:22creators living certain lifestyles and they feel like
- 23:26that should be them. And it's so accessible to like,
- 23:29kind of RIP that off in a way, right?
- 23:31Like not in an authentic way, but you can try.
- 23:33And a lot of the kind of like chic things that are like part
- 23:37of the aesthetic and popular are things that just like naturally
- 23:40happen as you get older. Like, you know, you probably
- 23:43start experimenting less with makeup, so you're wearing less
- 23:46makeup. You don't have time to do your
- 23:47hair everyday, so you're slicking it back.
- 23:49You know, these are things that, like, women who are in their 30s
- 23:53are doing or we're doing, I guess, because of necessity or
- 23:57just because of getting to certain ages.
- 23:59And now we see a lot of young people emulating that.
- 24:02But the problem isn't everybody's the same.
- 24:05We're all just the same. So I am petitioning to bring
- 24:08back young people wanting to be fun, be cool, be hot, be
- 24:14interesting, be smart. We need to stop being obsessed
- 24:17with being chic because everybody is just looking the
- 24:19same. It's like the least chic thing
- 24:21that I think we've all ever seen.
