Rip Currents Kill 21 This Year
This year, at least 21 people died in U.S. rip currents—powerful, often invisible underwater channels that can drag swimmers out to sea faster than they can swim. Don’t fight them: float face-up, conserve energy, and let the current carry you. When you’re out of the current, signal for help by raising your arm. Check the National Weather Service for rip current forecasts up to six days ahead, and heed beach flags—red means danger, purple warns of marine life, double red means the beach is closed.
