- 0:04From everybody to the Payment Shed walk and talk.
- 0:07Today we're joined by Hal Lonas from Truly You How.
- 0:10Welcome to the Payment Shed. Please introduce yourself.
- 0:13Tell us a little bit about your role at the business and what
- 0:15Truly you do. Yeah, Thank you, Grant.
- 0:17Great to be here today. I'm CTO at Truly You and my role
- 0:21is I head up engineering and IT in the business and have the the
- 0:26fun of working with everything technical.
- 0:27So that's my, that's my role. OK, brilliant.
- 0:30And also US momentum has been really important for you guys
- 0:33lately. You've just announced the circa
- 0:352000% surge in KYB. Can you just tell us a little
- 0:39bit what is driving that demand that we're seeing for unified
- 0:43verification at the moment? Yeah, it's been incredible to
- 0:45see the growth. And there's a couple things.
- 0:48There's always compliance and regulatory.
- 0:50There's also, you know, just the need of verifying small
- 0:53businesses and the trust and safety realm as well.
- 0:57They know what's really driving it is that businesses really see
- 1:00a need to verify and they want to know who they're doing
- 1:02business with. And and so that that's really
- 1:05driving the need and, and, and now you know, we're operating at
- 1:08high volumes, high accuracy rates and, and able just to do a
- 1:12lot more than we ever did before.
- 1:13And a couple of exciting announcements from you guys this
- 1:16week. So the first one of them I
- 1:17wanted to talk about really was around that next Gen.
- 1:20ID and AI. You guys have launched a new
- 1:23biometric and continuous KYB capability product.
- 1:27Can you tell us a little bit about that?
- 1:29Why is that an important move for you guys?
- 1:31I guess from a product point of view it's.
- 1:32It's really important and the the, the next Gen. biometric
- 1:35capability is really important. Everyone talks about Gen.
- 1:39AI and and the fraud threat and that's that's really there and
- 1:42it's really prevalent in business as well.
- 1:44And one thing we're able to do now is to keep a list of faces
- 1:48and biometrics we've seen before, sort sort of a sort of a
- 1:51bad guy roll call. And so, you know, if that comes
- 1:54up again for a business, you know, we could stop it in its
- 1:57trap. So, you know, there's no reason
- 1:59to let a bunch of bad actors get in there and try again and
- 2:02again. We can just stop it right away.
- 2:04And then the continuous capability is really
- 2:06interesting. So you know, what we ask
- 2:08everybody is, wouldn't you like to know if a business gets risky
- 2:11somewhere in its journey? You know, businesses change all
- 2:13the time and so they can, they can change their, you know,
- 2:18their financial standpoint, they can change whether they're
- 2:20actually even in business or not, or you know, very
- 2:23importantly what they're selling.
- 2:24And so for us to have the capability to monitor a business
- 2:27continuously and for our customers to be able to enroll a
- 2:29business, they can watch the changes over time and be alerted
- 2:33very proactively, proactively if there's any kind of a.
- 2:35Change. OK, cool.
- 2:36So when's the actual launch then?
- 2:38It's it's, it's ready to go now. It's.
- 2:40As we speak. Yeah, it's happening right now.
- 2:42OK, brilliant. That's really exciting for you
- 2:43guys. And as verification comes faster
- 2:46and more automated, how do you maintain balance between smooth
- 2:52on boarding and strong fraud prevention at the same time?
- 2:54Yeah. Well, so that's a great
- 2:56question. And you know, we actually have a
- 2:59suite of products. So you know, we can do biometric
- 3:01authentication, we can look at your documents, we can do a data
- 3:04only verification. And so really the answer to that
- 3:07question is our customers get to choose their own journey and
- 3:10actually they get to choose their journey dynamically.
- 3:12So you know, it's not like A1 size fits all for our customers.
- 3:15So if they have some onboarding they're doing that they consider
- 3:18to be a little riskier, they can put a little more friction in
- 3:20the process. If they have a cohort of people
- 3:22that they're maybe reverify, reverifying and they are pretty
- 3:25confident in the outcome, they can go a low friction route.
- 3:28So they get to choose for themselves what makes sense and
- 3:30we don't force them down 1 route or the other.
- 3:33OK, very good. And obviously that biometric
- 3:35piece is more prevalent than ever and you know we've got
- 3:38agentic AI coming and some of the challenges that will come
- 3:41with that around sort of the biometric step that we've made
- 3:44in payments. I talk about this quite a lot.
- 3:46You know we went down this route of OT PS and biometrics and then
- 3:50you know something like agentic obviously comes in into the the
- 3:53fold. I mean do you have any sort of
- 3:54takes on agentic and where that might take us as well?
- 3:56Well. I'm actually really excited
- 3:58about Genentic. I think that really opens things
- 3:59up. You know, I think for for years,
- 4:01you know what people think about AI and they think about like
- 4:04physical robots, right, that will do things for you.
- 4:06And we think about who's going to do the laundry or do the
- 4:08dishes at home or or even drive my car.
- 4:10But what is turning out to be is that, you know, the robot's
- 4:13actually going to be in the cloud and the robot's going to
- 4:16do things we want to have done, but it can happen automatically
- 4:19and kind of behind the scenes. So super excited about Agentic.
- 4:22I think there might be a little bit of hype around it now, but
- 4:25it's going to come and be upon us very quickly and I think it's
- 4:28really going to change our lives.
- 4:29Yeah, it's definitely the most talked about thing.
- 4:32So we're obviously at Money 2020 in the USA.
- 4:35Why is this such an important event for truly you to come to
- 4:38every year? Well, for one thing, we get to
- 4:40meet our customers and prospective customers.
- 4:43It's also really great for me as a technology expert to see what
- 4:47other people are talking about and to really get my finger on
- 4:49the pulse of advancements in the industry.
- 4:52You know, what is the latest high tech thing?
- 4:53What is the the biggest breakthrough?
- 4:55And so I really look around and try to discern what those things
- 4:58are and what people are talking about in their messaging.
- 5:00So it's it's very interesting for me.
- 5:02And it's like one of those weird industries payments.
- 5:04I think with that, you know, the thing I love about Money 2020 is
- 5:08the collaboration that's actually happening.
- 5:09There's a lot of competition, but actually the competition
- 5:12does collaborate. It does talk about challenges
- 5:15they're facing, how they're dealing with those challenges.
- 5:17I think that's quite rare in in some sectors where people are
- 5:19less open. It's quite rare.
- 5:21I think it's good to have the collaboration.
- 5:23We also get a ton of collaboration and great input
- 5:25from our customers. So our customers are, you know,
- 5:28by far the single most important source of innovation for us
- 5:30because they tell us the problems they're dealing with
- 5:33now and then what they anticipate coming, you know, 6
- 5:35or 12 or 18 months down the line.
- 5:38So it really is great input for us in the engineering and
- 5:41product process for us to figure out what to do next.
- 5:44Brilliant. Well, Hal, thanks for joining us
- 5:46on the walk and talk. Before you go, we have got quite
- 5:49a renowned section as it's becoming now at the end of each
- 5:52interview that we run the shelf of shame where someone brings
- 5:55one thing they want to nominate in fintech payments business in
- 5:58general. Can you tell us the item you're
- 6:00going to nominate today? Yeah, you know, my item to
- 6:03nominate would actually be overhyped AI.
- 6:06OK. So as much as I believe in
- 6:09agentic as a future and what's going to happen with AI and
- 6:12improving our lives, I also think we, you know, are in
- 6:15danger of, of over hyping it and sort of over promising and under
- 6:19delivering it. And so I, I worry about that
- 6:21sort of through of despair we might get in, you know, where
- 6:23people just get fatigued from hearing the terminology too much
- 6:27and they don't get what's, you know, what the, what possibly
- 6:30will be delivered in the. Future, I think it's a great one
- 6:32to call out. And yeah, there's definitely
- 6:34that hype train that exists at the moment and everyone just
- 6:36says AI, but you've got to lift the hood up and go, well, what
- 6:39are you specifically doing with AI?
- 6:40You really do. You really do.
- 6:42That's fantastic. Well, I'm going to put that on
- 6:44the shelf for sure. Thanks for bringing that
- 6:46nomination and thanks for having a chat with us on the payment
- 6:47share today. Thank you, Grant.
- 6:48Really appreciate the opportunity.
