- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn Danish with Fexingo? Luna: Yeah, let's do it! I've been thinking about family words. We did oldefar and oldemor last time. Lucas: Right, great-grandparents. So today let's step one generation closer: grandparents. In Danish, there are two words for each grandparent depending on which side of the family they're from. Luna: Oh, like maternal and paternal? Lucas: Exactly. So your mother's father is 'morfar' — mother's father. Let's say it together: morfar. Luna: Morfar. Lucas: Good. And your mother's mother is 'mormor' — but today we're focusing on the 'far' and 'mor' parts. So 'morfar' is mother's father. Now your father's father is 'farfar'. Luna: Farfar. That's easy to remember — 'far' is dad, so father's father. Lucas: Yep. And father's mother is 'farmor'. Luna: Farmor. Lucas: Perfect. Now there are also general terms: 'bedstefar' for grandfather and 'bedstemor' for grandmother. These are used when you don't specify which side. Luna: Bedstefar and bedstemor. So if I say 'my grandfather', I can say 'min bedstefar'? Lucas: Exactly. 'Min bedstefar' or 'min morfar' if it's your mother's father. Let's practice with a sentence: 'Min morfar er sjov.' My mother's father is funny. Luna: Min morfar er sjov. Lucas: Yeah, that's good. Now try 'Min farmor er sød' — my father's mother is sweet. Luna: Min farmor er sød. Lucas: Nice. So if this episode is helping you keep these straight, just a quick note: Fexingo stays free because of listeners like you who support the show. If today was useful, you can help at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it's a small way to keep these episodes coming. I know I'd miss Lucas' patience otherwise. Lucas: So you've got 'morfar', 'farmor', 'bedstefar', 'bedstemor'. Let's do a little dialogue. Imagine you're introducing your grandparents at a party. Luna: Okay. Lucas: I'll start: 'Det er min bedstefar, og det er min bedstemor.' That is my grandfather, and that is my grandmother. Luna: Det er min bedstefar, og det er min bedstemor. Lucas: Great. Now you say: 'Min morfar hedder Lars, og min farmor hedder Mette.' My mother's father is named Lars, and my father's mother is named Mette. Luna: Min morfar hedder Lars, og min farmor hedder Mette. Lucas: Perfect! And just to mix it up: 'Min bedstefar kan lide at læse.' My grandfather likes to read. Luna: Min bedstefar kan lide at læse. Lucas: So we've got four new words: morfar, farmor, bedstefar, bedstemor. Try them out when you talk about your family. Luna: I will. Tak, Lucas. Lucas: Det var så lidt. Practice these, and we'll see you next time on Learn Danish with Fexingo.
