- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And the man of God said, Where
- 0:05Speaker 1: fell it? And he showed him the place, and he
- 0:08Speaker 1: cut down a stick, and cast it thither, and the
- 0:12Speaker 1: iron did swim. 2 Kings 6.6 Thank you, Lord, for
- 0:19Speaker 1: your continued faithfulness and favor as I listen to the
- 0:23Speaker 1: readings in 2 Kings. I stand in awe and adoration.
- 0:29Speaker 1: as I begin to realize that, through the story of
- 0:32Speaker 1: the widow in debt, you continually pour out the oil
- 0:36Speaker 1: of anointing as long as there is an empty vessel
- 0:40Speaker 1: ready to receive what you're pouring out. With this truth,
- 0:46Speaker 1: I declare that my life will serve as an empty vessel,
- 0:51Speaker 1: so that you can continually pour out your goodness and
- 0:54Speaker 1: anointing over me and my circumstances. Like Elisha, I declare
- 1:01Speaker 1: that your miracles of turning bad situations to good will
- 1:05Speaker 1: follow me. I declare that when my dreams seem to
- 1:09Speaker 1: sink like the axe head, that in your goodness you
- 1:14Speaker 1: will allow it to rise to the top, to be
- 1:16Speaker 1: used for purpose and for building something that brings you honor.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I prophesy over my life right now that miracles will
- 1:27Speaker 1: be the norm in my life. and not the exception.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I know you are good, and your name is all
- 1:35Speaker 1: I need to achieve greatness. In Jesus' name, amen. Listening
- 1:43Speaker 1: to these daily prayers strengthens your relationship with God. Continue
- 1:48Speaker 1: hearing from the Lord by listening to today's Bible in
- 1:51Speaker 1: a Year, brought to you by Bibleinayear.com.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Everyday Miracles In our last story we learned about the
- 2:09Speaker 2: three kings battling against the Moabite rebellion. God honored Israel
- 2:15Speaker 2: solely because they aligned themselves with Judah who remained faithful.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Now we will learn about Elisha's relationship with the people
- 2:23Speaker 2: of Israel. His kind and gentle soul ministered to the
- 2:27Speaker 2: sheep of God. Every day Elisha experienced a small miracle
- 2:32Speaker 2: as he gave his life to the service of others.
- 2:35Speaker 2: inspired by the book of 2 Kings.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Hello, this is Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:43Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. In our previous episode, we
- 2:47Speaker 3: learned how God protected the kings of Judah, Israel, and
- 2:50Speaker 3: Edom against the Moabite rebels. Though Israel's king, Joram, was
- 2:54Speaker 3: still seeking out foreign gods rather than really turning to
- 2:58Speaker 3: the Lord, Jehoshaphat, Judah's king, was righteous, and because of
- 3:02Speaker 3: his faithfulness to God, the Lord blessed Israel. Judah, and
- 3:06Speaker 3: Edom with a great victory against Moab's army. Today, we'll
- 3:10Speaker 3: dive deeper into the life of Elisha, the great prophet
- 3:13Speaker 3: of God, the man that God had chosen to speak
- 3:17Speaker 3: to Israel in his behalf. Elisha will prove as faithful
- 3:21Speaker 3: and caring for God's people as his mentor Elijah had been,
- 3:24Speaker 3: and he will witness God's unmistakable hand at work each day.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Let's listen now to today's readings.
- 3:33Speaker 2: The prophet Elisha traveled the land of Israel in search
- 3:36Speaker 2: of God's will. He would walk into towns, care for
- 3:39Speaker 2: those in need, and then depart to the next place.
- 3:43Speaker 2: He walked with integrity and wisdom. He was alert and
- 3:47Speaker 2: attuned to the will of God. He was sensitive to
- 3:50Speaker 2: the still and quiet voice of God, just as Elisha was.
- 3:54Speaker 2: One day, as Elisha was teaching in a small town,
- 3:57Speaker 2: a widow of a prophet came to him. Her face
- 4:00Speaker 2: was weary from many sleepless nights. Her eyes were red
- 4:04Speaker 2: from many tears, and her hair was turning gray. Past
- 4:08Speaker 2: the haggard exterior, Elisha could recognize the woman as the
- 4:11Speaker 2: wife of one of his dear friends who had passed away.
- 4:15Speaker 2: She clung to him and began to cry.' You knew
- 4:18Speaker 2: my husband,' she wept.' He served you, but now he
- 4:22Speaker 2: is dead, and there is no one to care for me.'
- 4:24Speaker 2: A debt collector has come to my home, threatening to
- 4:28Speaker 2: take my two boys as slaves.' Elisha's heart broke as
- 4:32Speaker 2: he listened to her cries. The shepherding heart of God
- 4:35Speaker 2: was upon him, and he desired for nothing more than
- 4:38Speaker 2: to see her pain relieved.' What can I do for you?'
- 4:41Speaker 2: Elisha asked.' What do you own to give the collector?'
- 4:46Speaker 2: The woman wiped her eyes and said,' I have nothing
- 4:48Speaker 2: except a flask of olive oil.' Elisha gave her a
- 4:52Speaker 2: reassuring smile.' Go and find as many empty jars as
- 4:56Speaker 2: you can. Borrow some from your friends.' Then go into
- 5:00Speaker 2: your house and shut the door. Pour the oil from
- 5:04Speaker 2: your flask into the jars. Set each one aside once
- 5:08Speaker 2: it is filled. Elisha gave her very specific directions. In
- 5:13Speaker 2: his heart he was excited to see what the Lord
- 5:15Speaker 2: was about to do. She did as she was told.
- 5:18Speaker 2: She filled the jars of olive oil, and her sons
- 5:21Speaker 2: continued to bring more jars to be filled. To her dismay,
- 5:24Speaker 2: the flask of olive oil continued to pour out oil
- 5:27Speaker 2: well beyond its limits. She watched as jar after jar
- 5:31Speaker 2: was filled to the brim with fresh olive oil. Tears
- 5:35Speaker 2: streamed down her face as she watched the Lord's faithfulness
- 5:39Speaker 2: unfold before her very eyes. Once every jar she found
- 5:43Speaker 2: was filled with olive oil, she went back to Elisha
- 5:46Speaker 2: and shared with him what had happened. He smiled and said,
- 5:50Speaker 2: Now sell the olive oil to pay off your debts.
- 5:52Speaker 2: You should be free after that. So the woman left
- 5:55Speaker 2: with hope in her steps. Sometime after, Elisha returned to Gilgal.
- 6:01Speaker 2: On his travels, he noticed that the fields of grain
- 6:04Speaker 2: were withering away under the intense eastern sun. A harsh
- 6:08Speaker 2: and warm wind blew in from the south, and dust
- 6:11Speaker 2: piled up over the crops. Elisha knew that no good
- 6:15Speaker 2: could come of this. Gilgal was experiencing a famine. Elisha
- 6:20Speaker 2: went into the city and was invited to a meeting
- 6:23Speaker 2: of elders. They were seated before him and prepared a
- 6:26Speaker 2: small meal. One of the elders asked the servant to
- 6:30Speaker 2: start a fire and begin a pot of stew. The
- 6:33Speaker 2: servant was quick to please and began immediately chopping vegetables
- 6:37Speaker 2: and tending to the fire. He went out into the
- 6:40Speaker 2: field and gathered more herbs and came back with a
- 6:42Speaker 2: handful of wild gourds. He shredded the gourds and put
- 6:46Speaker 2: them in the stew. Without realizing it, he had poisoned
- 6:50Speaker 2: the stew with blighted gourds. They corrupted the stew, making
- 6:54Speaker 2: it bitter and deadly. With one bite, every elder recognized
- 6:58Speaker 2: the stew was poisoned.' Man of God!' they exclaimed.' There
- 7:03Speaker 2: is no way we could eat this!' So they spat
- 7:05Speaker 2: the stew out and berated the servant. Elisha, without using
- 7:10Speaker 2: any harsh words, looked at the servant and said, Bring
- 7:13Speaker 2: me some flour. So he did. Elisha took the flour
- 7:17Speaker 2: and threw it into the pot. Now it should be
- 7:20Speaker 2: good to eat, he said. So the men ate it
- 7:23Speaker 2: and were unharmed. They all marveled in their minds at
- 7:26Speaker 2: Elisha's mystic powers. However, they knew it was from God himself.
- 7:32Speaker 2: One day, as Elisha was caring for the needs of
- 7:34Speaker 2: the starving people, a man approached him. The man came
- 7:38Speaker 2: with a large basket of loaves. He was a tall man, stocky,
- 7:41Speaker 2: and wore a genuine smile. He threw the basket down
- 7:45Speaker 2: at Elisha's feet and said, Here I have twenty loaves.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Elisha smiled at the gesture and asked the man to
- 7:52Speaker 2: disperse it to the people. There were over a hundred
- 7:55Speaker 2: of them seeking Elisha's care. The man gave a nervous
- 7:59Speaker 2: laugh and said, What? How can I feed a hundred
- 8:02Speaker 2: people with twenty small loaves? Elisha paid no attention to
- 8:06Speaker 2: the man's question and simply repeated himself, Go and give.
- 8:10Speaker 3: It to the people.
- 8:12Speaker 2: So he did. He broke up the loaves and began
- 8:14Speaker 2: serving the sick and hungry. To his dismay, there was
- 8:18Speaker 2: plenty of bread for everyone, with several loaves left over.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Elisha continued to tend to the needs of hurting and
- 8:24Speaker 2: hungry people. He found great purpose and fulfillment in helping
- 8:28Speaker 2: those who could not repay him in any way. As
- 8:31Speaker 2: he healed, taught, and tended to them, he began to
- 8:34Speaker 2: feel his heart grow closer to God's, One day a
- 8:38Speaker 2: group of prophets came to him and said, We would
- 8:40Speaker 2: like to build a new place for us to meet.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Our current home is too small. Let us go down
- 8:46Speaker 2: to the Jordan River. There are plenty of logs and
- 8:48Speaker 2: trees to be used. Go on ahead, Elisha said with
- 8:52Speaker 2: a grin. However, the men insisted Elisha go with them.
- 8:56Speaker 2: So he finished up his work and departed to the
- 8:59Speaker 2: river with them. When they arrived, they began to swipe
- 9:02Speaker 2: away at the trees. They chopped and sawed off all
- 9:05Speaker 2: they could see. While one of them was working, his
- 9:08Speaker 2: axe head flew off his handle and dropped into the
- 9:11Speaker 2: bottom of the river.
- 9:12Speaker 1: No!
- 9:13Speaker 3: he yelled.
- 9:13Speaker 2: That was a borrowed axe!' Elisha walked up to the river.'
- 9:17Speaker 2: Where did it fall?' he asked, still looking at the
- 9:20Speaker 2: rushing water. The man pointed to the place. So Elisha
- 9:24Speaker 2: cut off a stick and threw it into the water
- 9:26Speaker 2: at that spot. Then, like it was a bobbing apple,
- 9:30Speaker 2: the axe floated to the surface of the water for
- 9:32Speaker 2: the man to retrieve. These were the miracles Elisha dealt with,
- 9:37Speaker 2: the small and seemingly insignificant problems of everyday townsfolk. Elisha
- 9:42Speaker 2: helped widows with jars of oil. He helped elders with
- 9:45Speaker 2: stew and beggars with bread. He helped prophets build homes
- 9:49Speaker 2: and he preached to the average people of Israel. Elijah
- 9:53Speaker 2: gave his life to serve those who could not help themselves.
- 9:57Speaker 2: This was the heart of God. The heart of God
- 10:00Speaker 2: was not just for kings and warriors. The heart of
- 10:03Speaker 2: God was for the widow, the orphan, the hungry, and
- 10:06Speaker 2: the sick. The heart of God was to help people
- 10:09Speaker 2: find hope in everyday life. So Elisha continued to serve
- 10:13Speaker 2: as a shepherd over the people, and God worked through
- 10:16Speaker 2: him day by day.
- 10:22Speaker 3: As we begin today's passage, we see the heart of
- 10:24Speaker 3: Elisha for God's people. He had been called to a
- 10:28Speaker 3: prophetic ministry for sure, speaking God's word to Israel and
- 10:32Speaker 3: to her kings, but he was also called to a
- 10:35Speaker 3: pastoral ministry of caring for God's people. In this passage,
- 10:40Speaker 3: we read of four miracles that God performed through Elisha.
- 10:45Speaker 3: The first was for a woman, The widow of a
- 10:47Speaker 3: prophet who came to Elisha and said she had a
- 10:50Speaker 3: debt she could not repay and feared she would have
- 10:52Speaker 3: to give her sons as slaves to the creditor. Elisha's
- 10:56Speaker 3: heart went out to the woman. And we read in
- 10:59Speaker 3: 2 Kings 4, verse 2, these words. What shall I
- 11:04Speaker 3: do for you? Tell me. What have you in the house?
- 11:08Speaker 3: And she said, Your servant has nothing in the house
- 11:10Speaker 3: except a jar of oil. The widow knew what she liked.
- 11:14Speaker 3: She did not have enough. It was understandable. She had
- 11:17Speaker 3: just lost her husband. She was a widow and now
- 11:19Speaker 3: in a desperate state. But Elisha looked at her with
- 11:23Speaker 3: eyes of faith and compassion. So he told her to
- 11:27Speaker 3: gather as many jars as she could from her home,
- 11:29Speaker 3: from her friends and her neighbors. He then had her
- 11:33Speaker 3: and her sons go into their home, close the doors,
- 11:35Speaker 3: and begin pouring oil into the jars. It probably sounded
- 11:39Speaker 3: like a wild and crazy request, but the woman had
- 11:43Speaker 3: faith in the Lord and the Lord's prophets. To her amazement,
- 11:46Speaker 3: the oil poured freely in a steady stream until every
- 11:49Speaker 3: single jar was full. It was a full-on miracle. What
- 11:54Speaker 3: started as not enough, even for her, was increased by
- 11:57Speaker 3: God until she had more and more than enough to
- 12:00Speaker 3: sell and repay her debt and live off the rest.
- 12:04Speaker 3: What a miracle! Our God is a God of might
- 12:08Speaker 3: and miracles, and we always don't see physical miracles when
- 12:12Speaker 3: But we see the extraordinary provision of God in our lives,
- 12:15Speaker 3: the supernatural provision of God in our lives each day
- 12:19Speaker 3: when we pray and seek him. God will do the
- 12:22Speaker 3: extraordinary through the ordinary in your life when you give
- 12:26Speaker 3: it to him. The Bible says that my God shall
- 12:29Speaker 3: supply all of your needs according to his riches and
- 12:32Speaker 3: glory in Jesus Christ. That's all of your needs. And
- 12:36Speaker 3: just as God provided for this widow and her family,
- 12:40Speaker 3: God will provide for you. We also heard how God
- 12:43Speaker 3: worked through Elisha to feed 100 starving men with just
- 12:48Speaker 3: 20 small loaves. Again, God took what was not enough
- 12:52Speaker 3: and made it abundant enough to provide for the needy.
- 12:56Speaker 3: And so we have two miracles that show us that
- 12:59Speaker 3: our God is the God of enough, and he can
- 13:02Speaker 3: take our not enough and make it more than abundant.
- 13:06Speaker 3: The two other miracles weren't about God making a lot
- 13:09Speaker 3: out of a little, but they have something in common
- 13:11Speaker 3: with each other. Did you notice it? In the first,
- 13:14Speaker 3: a stew that was poisoned by the careless addition of
- 13:17Speaker 3: a wrong ingredient corrupted gourds, became inedible and deadly. In
- 13:22Speaker 3: a town where famine was threatening those living there, losing
- 13:25Speaker 3: food like this was tragic. But then Elisha took some
- 13:28Speaker 3: flour and threw it into the pot, restoring it miraculously
- 13:32Speaker 3: so the elders could eat it without concern for their safety.
- 13:36Speaker 3: And in the second miracle, an axe head flew off
- 13:39Speaker 3: its handle and fell into the depths of the Jordans.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Like the stew, it seemed like it was lost for good,
- 13:45Speaker 3: or so everyone thought. But God once again works miraculously
- 13:49Speaker 3: through Elisha, and the axe head floated on the surface
- 13:53Speaker 3: of the water. Yes, it floated. That was the supernatural
- 13:58Speaker 3: work of God. Both miracles demonstrate that God is able
- 14:02Speaker 3: to restore what is lost, that God is able to
- 14:05Speaker 3: do what is needed. That which is poison and bitter
- 14:08Speaker 3: can be made right, and that which is forever lost,
- 14:11Speaker 3: seemingly gone forever, can be found and put to use again.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Most of all, this passage shows us that God is
- 14:19Speaker 3: blessing his prophet Elisha even as he promised and that
- 14:23Speaker 3: the miracles and the spirit of God that was upon
- 14:26Speaker 3: him was flowing freely. The miracles Elisha performed pointed to
- 14:30Speaker 3: a day and a person yet to come. One day,
- 14:33Speaker 3: God would send Jesus to provide for our needs, all
- 14:37Speaker 3: of them, with abundance. He said, I have come that
- 14:39Speaker 3: you might have life, and have it more abundantly. Dear Lord,
- 14:44Speaker 3: we thank you for your miracle-working power in our lives,
- 14:48Speaker 3: taking ordinary things and doing extraordinary things. We thank you
- 14:52Speaker 3: that what is lost can be found in you, and
- 14:54Speaker 3: when we seemingly don't have enough, Lord, you are enough.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Thank you for your faithfulness in our lives. In Christ's name, amen.
