Transcript
- 0:08Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:10Friday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network,
- 0:14Trent Condon and Ken Miller for the next couple of hours talking
- 0:17sports with you. Thanks for starting your
- 0:19afternoon with us. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:22program. In the first hour of the
- 0:24program, about 12:30, Eugene repay his Friday visit.
- 0:27Des Moines Register for Eugene. We'll talk Iowa State topics
- 0:32with Eugene coming up here at 12:30.
- 0:35Tom Caker kicks off the second hour of the program.
- 0:38We'll go from the clones in hour one to the Hawks to start hour
- 0:42number two. We'll catch the latest on on I
- 0:45with both Eugene and Tom will pick their brain.
- 0:47Although it's going back six days now to what they saw last
- 0:50Saturday as the spring practice and the football spring
- 0:54practices wind down. But we'll talk to both of those
- 0:57gentlemen about that at Tom at One O 2 to be precise.
- 1:03We don't have Mike Palm today. Mike Palm is tied up.
- 1:06So we'll leave downtown Las Vegas, head to Las Vegas Blvd.
- 1:09way down on the South Strip. That's where you'll find the
- 1:11South Point. We'll talk to our friend Chris
- 1:14Andrews runs the shop at the South Point.
- 1:16Long time Vegas line maker bookmakers been doing so doing
- 1:20it very well since the late 70s when he left Pittsburgh to make
- 1:24his way West young man and make his fortune.
- 1:27I don't know if he made a fortune, but I mean I have a
- 1:29living and he's really good at what he does and he's a good
- 1:31dude. We'll talk to Chris Andrews
- 1:32coming up here at 1:30. Trent will make some picks.
- 1:35I'll go over why final Derby plays at about 1:50 or there
- 1:40about Circa sports sponsors. Those by the way, Circa actually
- 1:44has betting on the Derby. They bet they they have horse
- 1:46racing on Derby, No Oaks, Derby, Preakness, Belmont and then the
- 1:51two Breeders' Cup days coming up in November.
- 1:54But that's the only time that they offer horses at any of
- 1:56their property. But if you're local here, you
- 1:58can watch and wager at Prairie Meadows.
- 2:00The race goes off at 6:00, one live race prior to at 5:00 and
- 2:04then the Derby at six. Should be a fun weekend, one of
- 2:07my favorite weekends of the year.
- 2:08How are you? I'm doing well and I have a
- 2:11question about that because I know there are some sports books
- 2:14at least in the past now, FanDuel and DraftKings of both
- 2:17also got involved with horse racing, but before there are
- 2:20some books out there and I don't know if that's the case now, but
- 2:22I know I've seen it where it's fixed odds is that.
- 2:26Not in the, not in the, not the US based.
- 2:29Not US based. They tried it in New Jersey.
- 2:33It didn't work. I think it's coming eventually,
- 2:35but it's just so hard to, it's so hard to book because of the
- 2:38money coming in, you know, constantly and especially trying
- 2:42to book the Derby fixed odds wise.
- 2:44I don't know if they'll ever get there, but a lot of people would
- 2:48like to see that. We shall see.
- 2:50It's just the risk, you know, and it's it's moving the numbers
- 2:53as quickly as you have to. Maybe they can do it.
- 2:55I don't know. That would be a really good
- 2:57question for Benson, maybe when we're out there this summer
- 3:01signing up for the contest. Yes.
- 3:03Absolutely. Circa millions and circa
- 3:05survivor, although we're out of millions, it's our strict.
- 3:08Our group is strictly survivors. No more millions, no.
- 3:10More millions, no more. But the quarterly prizes, yeah,
- 3:13I know it's fun. I get it.
- 3:14It's there. There's more opportunities
- 3:17because the suddenness of what you get knocked out of.
- 3:20I mean, you, you kind of not mourning, but you kind of
- 3:23depressed a little bit, you know, just how simple this
- 3:26contest seems and yet how difficult this bad boy is.
- 3:29And I think we're going to go forward.
- 3:30I think our group put together about 6-7 or eight entries, so
- 3:33we should have some ammo. Fired away out there like that.
- 3:37Absolutely. A lot of entries and more
- 3:39opportunity that goes along with it.
- 3:41So out of millions all going to go Survivor.
- 3:43So you're getting cocky. Finally made October and look at
- 3:45you something. You're going to be up to 7 or 8
- 3:47entries. I got this thing figured out
- 3:48right? You're going to surround the
- 3:50damn thing. So so we'll do that in coming up
- 3:54in August. I always look forward to that
- 3:56time. But they they won't open their
- 3:57contest till they get the schedule in front of them.
- 3:59So they can see how many weeks that it's going to be.
- 4:01Obviously we're going to start the show with just an
- 4:04unbelievable night for Minnesota sports.
- 4:07That curse maybe that you know, a lot of folks that follow
- 4:10Minnesota teams kind of think that it's going to be with them
- 4:14forever. And it might well be, although
- 4:15it wasn't last night. The curse.
- 4:17I'm not one. I don't want to sit here and say
- 4:19it's over, but at least for one night it went away as the tea
- 4:23wolves that was of the two. I mean, I did not see that one
- 4:26coming. I thought the Wild would knock
- 4:28off the start. I think the Wild are going to
- 4:29win the Stanley Cup, but and and the Twins won.
- 4:34So a Big Bang boom, the trifecta of Minnesota sports teams that
- 4:37played last night all put him in the win column.
- 4:39Obviously the the the Wolves and the and the Wild, the two that
- 4:44matter the most and move the needle the most.
- 4:46And what a great night for Minnesota sports.
- 4:48It absolutely was, and I was on the opposite side on all three
- 4:50of those and I was happy to be wrong and happy to be wrong and
- 4:53happy to be wrong on all three of them.
- 4:56Starting in something that we mentioned on the ice with the
- 4:59puck last night. Now it was pretty early.
- 5:02Did you feel that energy though? Were you watching rightfully?
- 5:05Of course. Yeah, it was unbelievable.
- 5:07The building was nuts. And they, you know, at the end,
- 5:10at the end of 20 minutes, I thought, Oh my God, they should
- 5:13be up more than one zip. Yeah, 'cause it certainly felt
- 5:15like they carried the play from from the time the puck dropped
- 5:18and only were able to get one bite.
- 5:20I don't know what Fellino's doing.
- 5:21Shoot the damn puck. That what net is wide open.
- 5:23You're gonna, you of all people are gonna.
- 5:25Now he's got great hands, but he uses them to fight, not to stick
- 5:28handle, but just shoot the puck. But anyways, they won the game.
- 5:33It was it's just a great win for them and Trent.
- 5:35They're built to win a Cup. They are built to win a Cup and
- 5:38you're they're a big underdog against Colorado, I think too
- 5:42big. I agree wholeheartedly.
- 5:44I was stunned to see the price. They can beat the ABS.
- 5:47They're a big physical hockey team and the longer this series
- 5:51goes, the better we'll be for Minnesota because they will wear
- 5:54this team down. They both have they've got the
- 5:57two best defensemen. One's Kale MacArthur, Colorado.
- 6:00The other one obviously is Quinn Hughes For Minnesota, they both
- 6:03got superstars down the center in Caprisoff and Nathan
- 6:06McKinnon. They've got the trade deadlines
- 6:10bringing over Fellino, and I don't know if you saw him hit
- 6:12number six for Dallas last night, just knocked him right
- 6:15out of the game there. And Mccarran 47.
- 6:18They're big, they're physical, they are built like a Stanley
- 6:22Cup winner, and whoever wins this series will be the favorite
- 6:25to win the Cup. The Wild Plus 750 currently the
- 6:29third betting choice at Circa behind the Lynch and the
- 6:32Hurricanes, but the number three choice and most difficult
- 6:35hurdles the what in front? Of them, that's it.
- 6:37Get through this one and they will.
- 6:39I, I think they'd probably move all the way to the favorite.
- 6:43Look, I don't care who comes out of the other side of the West.
- 6:45I don't care if it's Utah and if it's Las Vegas.
- 6:48We know Anaheim is going to be, they're going to have an
- 6:51opportunity. They're just not as good.
- 6:53They are not as good as the two teams in the Central.
- 6:57When you take a look at the series Price, and this is the
- 6:59reason I I believe it's Miss Price listening to you and just
- 7:02knowing the little bit of hockey that I do Wild right now plus
- 7:07190 -, 225 on the Avalanche. That implied probability.
- 7:12When you just look at the prices of that, is Colorado a 70%
- 7:15chance of winning this series? I don't think it's 70.
- 7:17No, 6040. I could even buy that 5545, but
- 7:23almost 70% it's 69 point. What is 69.2% is what the
- 7:27implied probability of that one. Absolutely, Minnesota.
- 7:32This team, as you have told us, absolutely is there.
- 7:35Now, am I going to bet on them to beat Colorado?
- 7:38No, I couldn't do that. I don't want to put the stink on
- 7:40him. We'll go the other way.
- 7:41Maybe we'll bet on Colorado and put the stink on them and.
- 7:43Pick them every day. Absolutely.
- 7:44Just keep going and going and going to the well.
- 7:46But you've laid it out perfectly.
- 7:48I think that there is a real chance.
- 7:50There is it's not, it's, it's, it's not wishful thinking.
- 7:53Look, I'm not a well fan. I, I want, I think it's, I love
- 7:57being able to kind of tag along with Joe O'Donnell and go
- 8:00through what he's go through, what he's living right now.
- 8:04We're going to have him on, if not every game, certainly a
- 8:07bunch of them in the upcoming series against Colorado.
- 8:09Yes, Colorado has home ice advantage.
- 8:12Minnesota could win this series, and if they do, they will win
- 8:15the Stanley Cup. How about that?
- 8:17How about that? A celebration in a parade in
- 8:19Minneapolis for the first time since 1991?
- 8:21Well, it would be a parade in Saint Paul, I guess.
- 8:23It would have. To be but in the Twin Cities,
- 8:24yes, a parade. Maybe they'll go through both
- 8:26cities because it's been a long time they have been waiting for
- 8:30a champion up there for sure, but it's not easy against.
- 8:33No, it's not. It's not the the best record in
- 8:35hockey. I did not like the way that they
- 8:38finished this year. They look really good.
- 8:39Obviously. Look, they overmatched.
- 8:41They overmatched the Kings. I'm thinking the Wild would have
- 8:44done the same thing. The Wilds, a big, physical,
- 8:46skilled hockey team. Colorado's good.
- 8:48Colorado's good. I think Minnesota's got a slight
- 8:51edge. And buckle up, this is going to
- 8:53be a blast. Now, meanwhile, with the Wolves,
- 8:56did you see the point spread for Monday's game against San
- 8:59Antonio? I have not.
- 9:01OK, so game one in San Antonio. San Antonio 9 O clock.
- 9:05Our time Monday night. What is the number at the Condon
- 9:09Casino? No Anthony Edwards, no Ant, he
- 9:13is not going to be there. No Divincenzo, we know that.
- 9:16That's for sure. Is there a possibility that we
- 9:20get a return? Those bench guys played so well
- 9:23last. Night they did the somo, you
- 9:24mean? Yeah.
- 9:24I don't. I haven't seen the update on
- 9:26him. He couldn't answer the bell last
- 9:28night. We'll see.
- 9:29I'm guessing he'll be questionable again.
- 9:30Spurs 9 1/2. 1414 Blown away by that number.
- 9:38Last night was incredible. I mean, just absolutely.
- 9:42You talk about going in with no shot, I think maybe, well,
- 9:45Desuma comes back for him. Seven.
- 9:47You're talking yourself into it already.
- 9:49Speaking of environments, Speaking of crowds, holy crap,
- 9:54those Timberwolves fans full throat, absolutely ready to go
- 9:59from the opening tip before the opening tip.
- 10:02This has turned into a fun playoff rivalry.
- 10:05Denver, Minnesota. It's as good a rivalry as
- 10:07there's in the NBA, maybe. This isn't manufactured, it
- 10:10isn't anything. They despise each other.
- 10:13There is real hatred on both sides and it's chirpy and you
- 10:17got all the components that go into it and T Wolves fans were
- 10:21absolutely ready for that. I love that part.
- 10:23They had to win last night. They weren't gonna.
- 10:25They knew that if they had to go to Denver, probably not going to
- 10:28go. There.
- 10:28But didn't they win a game seven in Denver?
- 10:29They did. Yes they did, but Ant played.
- 10:32That helps. You got that guy, you got.
- 10:35But for this is right, this has been a really good and I love
- 10:38what Finch said after the game. They could have played whoever
- 10:41they wanted and they kind of manipulated down the stretch and
- 10:44they wanted to play us well. Be careful what you wish for.
- 10:47Jane McDaniels It's not a *. No, but he's.
- 10:50But he is becoming a guy that a lot of people, casual fans now,
- 10:55are getting to understand. And we said it yesterday.
- 10:57What's the blueprint? What's the path?
- 10:59We talked about McDaniels. He had to go off.
- 11:01And he did. 32 points coupled with the defense just in on.
- 11:06Terence Shannon, To me, that's the that was the wild, not the
- 11:10wild. Card's the right term.
- 11:11That was the unknown going into it.
- 11:13What a game he played these two, this starting line up,
- 11:17McDaniels, Randall, Gobert, Connelly and Shannon.
- 11:20I saw something on X. They had played a total of 6
- 11:25minutes together on the floor all year, play offs included.
- 11:29That's awesome. Unbelievable, right?
- 11:31And look what they did last last night.
- 11:33Just incredible. Go Bear chiming in with A10
- 11:37spot. Yes, in addition to what he
- 11:39does. Couple of dunks in there, 8
- 11:40assists from Go Bear, doing those things at the top of the
- 11:44key, pulling Joker away. There was just so much and
- 11:47everybody had to do that. You were playing an 8 man
- 11:50rotation and almost everybody had to play perfectly.
- 11:52Played an 8 man rotation. And that's really what they got.
- 11:56Bones Highland came in for a couple minutes and was active
- 11:59hands. Reid off the bench, same way.
- 12:01Nas Reid, they needed something when he hit that corner three it
- 12:04was his first 3 pointer of the night that turned out to be his
- 12:06only three that it was his only three during that time period.
- 12:11The Nuggets just kept getting it back within a point and
- 12:14Minnesota had a response are the team was back up 8.
- 12:18It just. Just blink of an eye.
- 12:20Because I was just, you're just waiting for them.
- 12:23Denver's going to overcome it. They're going to get over the
- 12:25hump. They're going to get the lead
- 12:25and then. It's going to Happen. 9290 T
- 12:29Wolves 9890. Boom, instantly.
- 12:31It was absolutely incredible. You talk about a team effort,
- 12:35the guys showing up and just you can see that is a very tight
- 12:39knit group in professional sports that's hard.
- 12:41You know, you can't manufacture it.
- 12:43You can't just go rah, rah and make it happen.
- 12:47It has to happen organically. And these guys, they love
- 12:49playing for each other. They like that chip on the
- 12:52shoulder. And now, though, a big underdog,
- 12:55just get one and and you're right back to the conversation
- 12:59and potentially coming back he. Could.
- 13:01Three or four and suddenly the conversation changes in this
- 13:04more of an organization, one of the worst organizations in
- 13:07sports in the 1st 30 some years. Didn't have to be, but yeah, if
- 13:11you go back and that's this team, they had a chance in the
- 13:13late 90s with the rosters. They had and made one run to the
- 13:17Western, but that was the only playoff series that they had
- 13:19ever won. Was that run when they won two
- 13:22playoff series that season? I had this number.
- 13:25I thought you'd get a kick out of this one for the
- 13:27Timberwolves. Let me see if I can scroll
- 13:29through and find it as I'm going through the Yahoo Sports
- 13:33newsletter that I mentioned. That thing is absolutely
- 13:35incredible. I mean, you want a full recap?
- 13:37So you get it every day. Yep, goes in the e-mail box each
- 13:40and every day. And really?
- 13:41Do they inundate you with any other offers that like
- 13:44throughout the day? That would drive me crazy.
- 13:46Nope, that's just one thing. That's the one e-mail in the
- 13:48morning and that's all you get. Comes between our time, 7:30 to
- 13:529:30 in the morning, at some point during the morning.
- 13:55And in fact, they're also launching a sports business one
- 13:58also to go along with it. How about this?
- 14:00Here it is. The Timberwolves, seeking their
- 14:02third straight trip to the conference finals, now have more
- 14:04playoff wins the last three seasons, 22, than in the
- 14:08previous 34 years combined. Yeah, not surprised.
- 14:12Hey, look, not surprised. And we killed the Rudy Gobert
- 14:15trade. We spent a lot of summer time on
- 14:18that. What in God's day?
- 14:19Yeah, we did. We're looking for a summer topic
- 14:21and we just kept going back to the well this is the most
- 14:23idiotic trait. Seemed like we we called it as
- 14:26bad of a trade as we could ever. Remember in the history of
- 14:28sports, not just in the NBA, in the history of sports, what they
- 14:32gave up to get him. Swinging a miss?
- 14:34Swinging a miss over 2 for us, right?
- 14:37Well, when you do this five days a week, you're going to get more
- 14:39wrong than your share, Certainly your share, and we've done that
- 14:42very well. But yeah, Gobert's been
- 14:45fantastic, especially when he had to go up against the Joker.
- 14:47Now try and shut down 1 Minyama, would you please?
- 14:51Is that too much to ask? We did you watch a second of
- 14:55Nick's Hawks? No, it did.
- 14:56Well, no, because why? Right?
- 14:58It was. Was it 80, 4 to 36 or something
- 15:03at the half? 8430 yes, 8436 at the half so we
- 15:06had softball last night and it just.
- 15:08Did you think your phone was wrong?
- 15:10I. Didn't think it was wrong.
- 15:12I was just like, oh good God. Somebody's up 50 in the 1st.
- 15:15Half that's nice where if we can just go to the recording and hit
- 15:17delete don't even have to worry about that one.
- 15:19All right, we could get over and get caught up on the for me, I
- 15:23was getting caught up on the stars and wild before getting
- 15:25into the Timberwolves last night.
- 15:26So that one and then another surprise.
- 15:29The Celtics? Yes.
- 15:30What's going on here? Now you lose Tatum.
- 15:33Speaking of futures, I got a lot tied up on those Celtics
- 15:36conference ones. Oh boy.
- 15:37We're gonna have a lot of bullet holes going through the resume
- 15:40on that one. Again. 3 point shootings there.
- 15:43And now you can't play Jason Tatum in Game 7, can you?
- 15:47Leaving with a calf injury. We know calf injuries.
- 15:51What did he have before his Achilles?
- 15:52A calf injury. Now it's on the other leg.
- 15:55You can't. And when will they play?
- 15:57They tomorrow or Sunday? Good question.
- 16:00That is scheduled for Saturday night, tomorrow night, Saturday
- 16:03night, 630 for that one there. Late game that's there's only
- 16:07one game. Saturday, only one game?
- 16:09Yeah, that'll be it. And potentially 3 game sevens
- 16:11then on Sunday, and we'll see how the schedule spits out on
- 16:15that one after tonight's games. But I don't think there's any
- 16:17way. You just can't.
- 16:18This team was not built to win this year.
- 16:20Nope. They weren't supposed to, right?
- 16:22Tatum. They, they went into the
- 16:23offseason knowing that this is going to be a year that we're
- 16:26just, you know, tread water. Make the playoffs.
- 16:29Make the playoffs, maybe. Yeah, instead, you know,
- 16:31conversation chase and how good, but I don't think you can go
- 16:34with him. I I think it is too important
- 16:36for the future of their franchise.
- 16:37The crazy thing too is watching through it a little bit on Fast
- 16:40forward last night, but throughout the course of the
- 16:43year, of course, playing without Tatum.
- 16:45But it was all those role players we saw, obviously
- 16:48because of where we are, Luca Garza and the highlights that
- 16:50would pop up. But it wasn't just him, it was
- 16:52the the culmination of that bench mob, those guys that were
- 16:56coming through there and everybody helping out.
- 16:59And then Missoula's just gone away from it.
- 17:00It's like he's now suddenly scared to play those guys.
- 17:04Bad decision and it's going to be in a weird game.
- 17:08Seven, certainly. So who's the team in the East
- 17:10you like now? Nobody.
- 17:12I'm with you. Nobody.
- 17:13I'm kind of with you. Maybe the Knicks, but they're
- 17:18the two games they lost were one point games too.
- 17:20Maybe you know, when he kind of think back upon it now, there
- 17:23was one. It probably shouldn't even been
- 17:25a one point game. The Hawks I thought were better
- 17:26throughout the course of that one.
- 17:27The other one, though, I thought the Knicks were, for most of the
- 17:29game, the better team. Cleveland, maybe.
- 17:31I don't. I don't like Orlando.
- 17:34I like the Pistons prior to this series and they're down 3 to 2.
- 17:38And if Cleveland gets it done tonight and possibility of
- 17:41playing the Magic, you have to feel very confident about them
- 17:43getting there. I think it might be Cleveland at
- 17:45this point, if you had to pick one, the next one.
- 17:48I think they're fodder regardless whoever comes.
- 17:50Out of the East and the Knicks were built to beat the Celtics.
- 17:53I mean, if it's the Sixers, you got.
- 17:55Well, is Joel MB gonna play six or seven games?
- 17:57Yeah. No, the answer's probably not a
- 17:59very yeah, slim chance. Waiting for the other shoe to
- 18:02drop. I guess if I had to make a pick
- 18:03in the East right now, it'd be the Knicks, but I wouldn't like
- 18:05the wager one way or the other. Just to win The Who is the
- 18:09favorite to win the East, right? Good question.
- 18:11Let's go to NBA tab here. I gotta think it's Cleveland.
- 18:14Cleveland, huh? Well, it's Cleveland.
- 18:16Or or New York. Because they both already
- 18:18advanced, so that's. Going to Well, Cleveland's on
- 18:20the precipice. Yes, NBA quick lines, bracket,
- 18:25playoff bracket. No, I want futures.
- 18:27That's what we're looking for. They do not conference.
- 18:30There we go. OK, find the right tab.
- 18:32Here we go. The Celtics are still the
- 18:34favorite. They are they really?
- 18:35They're plus 160 Cavs plus 275 Knicks plus 320 Pistons, plus
- 18:41750 Sixers 28 to 1, Magic 28 to 1 and the Raptor is 100 to 1.
- 18:46How about this? How about the West?
- 18:48Thunder. Guess how much?
- 18:50You got away -2 dollars. Yeah, two O 5.
- 18:53This is from DraftKings. Spurs plus 210 Lakers 17 to 1 T
- 18:58Wolves 80 to one are they? 80 to 1.
- 19:00And 200 to one if you're going to jump aboard with the Houston
- 19:04Rockets. So so my son Kale, if the T
- 19:06Wolves win, he gets got $58,000 worth of you're not going to
- 19:11hedge. I think he's out of his mind.
- 19:14Well, he's he's not a mower. No, he's not a gardener.
- 19:17He's not gonna hedge. No, he's not.
- 19:19No hedging for kale? He's not gonna flinch.
- 19:22What's he doing? Come on 58,000 Now this is his
- 19:25team of of all this, but this is his team.
- 19:28It's still too early to hedge. Yeah, I believe, no, you could
- 19:31make certainly something. I mean, you could take the
- 19:33remaining teams, the other seven teams left and still make a.
- 19:37Profit or just stay in the West, right?
- 19:39Yeah, absolutely. And get one of the teams there
- 19:40at minimum you can do that. They get to the Western
- 19:44Conference finals, though. What you have to do I.
- 19:47Agree and I try he's. Not going to.
- 19:49He's not going to, no, he's. Not he's a gambler like the old
- 19:51man. Well, you taught him too well.
- 19:54I didn't. I would have been, I'd be out.
- 19:56I wouldn't be looking to cash. Out but now, when you were in
- 19:58your 20s. Well, that's fair.
- 20:00Well, he just turned 34 yesterday as a matter.
- 20:02He feels that old. He's 34 as a yesterday was his
- 20:05birthday. Happy birthday, Kale 30.
- 20:07Four, absolutely. All right.
- 20:08We'll see him when we're out there if we get out there at the
- 20:10same time. Coming up, I'm going in August.
- 20:12Are you planning? August trip?
- 20:14Yep, a little bit later this year.
- 20:16We've done July because of media days the last two seasons.
- 20:19So we went out early of those two years, but it used to be an
- 20:22August trip and we're going to go back to the August trip and
- 20:24hopefully our dates will match up and we can hell yeah out
- 20:27together. That'd be fun.
- 20:28That would. Be I'll run and grab you,
- 20:29Estella. Would you?
- 20:31A couple I'm in as long as you do it before 6:00 Pacific or
- 20:366:30 Pacific. We'll put the fun meter in the
- 20:38red. Yeah, there we go.
- 20:40All right, Eugene Repay is coming up.
- 20:41Iowa State conversation with Eugene will pick his brain on
- 20:45what he saw last week. TJ contract extension.
- 20:49Did you look into it at all the just the the 10 years?
- 20:52Obviously he's getting well compensated as he should be.
- 20:54We had Rob Doster on yesterday, a field of 68, and his response?
- 20:57Give when he wants, you know, just get whatever it takes to
- 21:00keep him. Buy out there 4 million.
- 21:04That's good, and I think it's fair.
- 21:05Protect yourself. It does, and it protects
- 21:07himself. And it also kind of puts a
- 21:09little pressure on the school. Yeah, because it's not a big buy
- 21:11out. Let's keep this NIL coming.
- 21:13Let's keep doing what we've been doing.
- 21:15It's been fascinating to watch. If you're Jamie Pollard, I'm
- 21:17sure you would like that number to be higher.
- 21:19Yeah, yeah, probably. Make it even a for TJ
- 21:23Altelberger in the school he's going to a little bit more
- 21:26difficult to pull the plug and to give that kind of offer and
- 21:29for you if it does happen. Well, obviously the financial
- 21:32windfall that comes along with it.
- 21:34That number was double made me feel even better about it.
- 21:36But I mean, that's about the only thing give me what he
- 21:39wants. How many programs this side of
- 21:42Duke and Iowa State have their just?
- 21:44Think of what you just said in the same.
- 21:45Duke and Iowa State, Kentucky maybe and probably not.
- 21:49No, I don't think it is. Kentucky are paying their
- 21:51basketball coach double what they're paying their football
- 21:54coach. Is that it in the power for cut
- 21:57structure? But everybody there's.
- 21:59Belichick's getting paid. Yes, absolutely.
- 22:02But that was Mike Malone. Yeah.
- 22:04Well, that yeah. Yeah, he is.
- 22:07The basketball coach making and. I'm just trying to think around,
- 22:12go around college athletics. This is that's a really good
- 22:15question. Not Oklahoma State.
- 22:21Not certainly not Texas Tech Houston.
- 22:26Houston, that would be a good one.
- 22:28Yeah, it maybe And that's just off the top of the head.
- 22:31Yeah, just something that popped into my mind is.
- 22:34There a Big 10 school? No, absolutely not.
- 22:36No, no. What did Whittingham get?
- 22:41Probably not as much as you think because he was out of
- 22:43work. I don't think they had to
- 22:44overspend to go get him either, Dusty.
- 22:48They're both, everybody's well compensated.
- 22:49Sure, we're talking about millionaires and millionaires,
- 22:51but I just think that might be it.
- 22:54And and to be honest, I don't even know if Shire makes double
- 22:57what Manny Diaz does. Oh, well, yeah, he would be
- 23:01close though, right? Yes, probably Manny Diaz in the
- 23:054 to 5 million or dollar range and probably 10 or even more or
- 23:08more. Shire I.
- 23:10Again, this is just all guesswork at this.
- 23:12Point, Indiana, probably. Was at one point absolutely, but
- 23:16not anymore. The basketball coach is probably
- 23:18making quadruple. Yes.
- 23:19What some of the football coaches.
- 23:21Fill in the blank coach was making yes.
- 23:23Oh, that's a that's a really good one, Trent.
- 23:26It's a rarity. It is.
- 23:27Eugene repay coming up next before we go to break.
- 23:30However, Speaking of cash, let's give you an opportunity to win
- 23:33some heading into the weekend. You can head to KX and o.com or
- 23:36whichever station you're listening to on the Iowa Sports
- 23:39Radio Network. And once you're there, a pop up
- 23:41box will appear. Type in the keyword Fun Fun at
- 23:45kxno.com. You're welcome to come to this
- 23:48one or whatever station you're listening to on the network.
- 23:50The keyword this hour in this nationwide contest is fun fun.
- 23:55Your chance to win $1000 Eugene repay on Iowa State.
- 24:00Tom Kicker kicks off our number two.
- 24:02Our friend Chris Andrews from the South points comes along.
- 24:04He will join us at about 1:30. Always look forward to catching
- 24:07up with Chris. And the new commercial is out
- 24:11for from Circa about football contest coming back so.
- 24:15Does it say the prizes? It doesn't.
- 24:17It's the question, how big are they going to go?
- 24:20So this is the little teaser that they have before they make
- 24:22the official announcement. Is, is Mike, is it, is it ATV
- 24:25commercial? It is, yes.
- 24:27So last year Mike Palm was was operating the spotlight.
- 24:31Do you remember that? Yes yes there's blue jumpsuit I
- 24:34I see it right now. Oh we got all kinds of
- 24:36dignitaries there. I I see Tim Murray made the cut
- 24:39Matt yeoman's is in there so stormy she made the cut as well.
- 24:43So, so we just retweeted that at Miller in Condon and you could
- 24:47find that as the football contests are back and now how
- 24:52big are those contests going to be and how much what do you?
- 24:54Think they're going to be how much?
- 24:57How much? How much is survivor this year?
- 25:00Guaranteed pool of what? What was it last year?
- 25:02Do you remember Off Hand was it? 15 or 20?
- 25:05I think the guarantee was 15 and they went.
- 25:07They went to 20, just just under 20 I think.
- 25:10I think maybe they make that the 20,000,020 million is the number
- 25:14and. Last year they had 69 in
- 25:16Grandissimo that it's the same same concept as Survivor but
- 25:20instead of the buy in being $1000 it's $100,000 just a
- 25:25little different. They had 69 participants in
- 25:27that. I bet they go well over a. 100 I
- 25:29I'm right there with you. I think that's definitely going
- 25:31to happen. That'll be north of 100.
- 25:33Do they keep millions at six? That's what it's been the.
- 25:35Last couple of years because they haven't hit the guarantee
- 25:37either a year. Keep it at six.
- 25:39Make the big one $20 million guaranteed price.
- 25:42Well, here's the other thing with the unfortunate demise of
- 25:46the Westgate, it's still it's still there, but it's being
- 25:50taken over by Caesar's. I'm not sure what the cause.
- 25:54They've always had contests now nowhere, nowhere near to the
- 25:57level at Circum. Do they just fold up tent?
- 26:00They just say, you know, we can't compete.
- 26:01Well, they did find at ankle last year with the college
- 26:03contest. They did, but they didn't get
- 26:05anywhere near the number of people.
- 26:06They also announced that late, too.
- 26:07OK. Yeah.
- 26:09Well, I don't know well. And there's sports book
- 26:12director, another really good one over there.
- 26:13Yeah, but now you wonder what the restructuring?
- 26:17Well, all those guys are on good jobs.
- 26:18Yeah, unfortunately, I'm guessing some.
- 26:21Well, we'll ask Chris. Maybe Chris has got his eyes on
- 26:23a couple. I know Circuit probably does.
- 26:26All right, coming up here, we will talk to Eugene Repay on the
- 26:28other side. Again, if you missed it, the
- 26:30keyword this hour is fun. Fun.
- 26:32Your chance to win $1000 in this nationwide contest Miller and
- 26:38Condon underwent on Friday. We're glad you're with us.
- 26:40We're talking sports with you on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 26:49Miller Condon just passed 12:30 on a Friday.
- 26:52Tom Caker momentarily. Eugene Repay kicks off hour
- 26:55number two. Chris Anders from the South
- 26:57Point joins us at 1:30. Let's talk Hawks, Big 10,
- 27:02etcetera with our guy. Tom Caker joins us each and
- 27:04every Friday. Tom Trenton, Ken, how are you
- 27:06doing? Well, guys, how are you doing?
- 27:10OK, auctions still going on. Yes, yeah, the the wraps up
- 27:16tomorrow night. So everybody get your bids in.
- 27:18Some great stuff. Tom, I saw some of the stuff
- 27:20online that you've been posting, some video.
- 27:22There's some really cool stuff. Yeah, the the the cool one that
- 27:26Iowa fans might like that I think is really interesting is
- 27:30the the entire offensive line. There's really cool picture of
- 27:33them on the bench after I think it was the Nebraska game, but
- 27:37I'm not positive, But all of them signed this, this, this
- 27:43photo below their names. And that's the Joe Moore
- 27:46award-winning and got the basketball signed by the entire
- 27:51men's basketball team. Got a picture signed by the
- 27:53entire men's basketball team. So a lot of cool things in the
- 27:58auction this year. Indeed, I want to go back to
- 28:00last Friday just real quick, because you and Trent were both
- 28:02kind of daydreaming about Logan Jones being a bear and your wish
- 28:07came true. Tom Kankert, how about that?
- 28:09We. Did I was so excited about that
- 28:12just because they needed a center and Mojo's a good guy to
- 28:19have there. So yeah, Because over the years
- 28:23as a Bears fan, they haven't collected many Iowa players.
- 28:26So now I got a couple, you know, Tory got Lojo, got I think Luke
- 28:33Elkins still on the practice squad.
- 28:34So got a couple of guys out there now.
- 28:38Seven NFL draft picks for the Hawkeyes, tying a program record
- 28:41of what they were able to do. And now you look forward who's
- 28:45going to be the next one and not just the next draft picks that
- 28:47we're going to see, but who's the next first rounder?
- 28:50Get out your crystal ball. Is this on the roster now?
- 28:52Yes. Boy, that's a great question.
- 28:55I wrote something early this week, I think it might have been
- 28:58Monday. I wrote something about what
- 29:00draft prospects for 2027. Here's the interesting thing
- 29:03guys, there's only 10 seniors on I will roster and none of them
- 29:07and none of them are like boy, that guy's for sure going to get
- 29:11picked. Now that junior class has three
- 29:14guys that I think have a really good chance to probably be
- 29:19selected next year. One of them on the defensive
- 29:22side, Zach Lutmer. I think he'll but I first round
- 29:26no the the guys that probably have the best chance, Kate Cape
- 29:33Peeper and Trevor Lauke. OK.
- 29:35All right. Yeah, Trevor Lauke, I think
- 29:38Trevor's got a good shot at getting picked left tackle that
- 29:42can move a little bit and, you know, pass block.
- 29:46I think there's a ton of value there.
- 29:49The other kind of maybe off the off the beaten path. 1:00 What
- 29:54if DJ Vanamaye has a Dallas Clark like season this year and
- 29:59he has a TJ Hawkinson like decision to make where you know,
- 30:03he just saw he just finishing up his red shirt sophomore year,
- 30:06but boy it's just too big of an opportunity to pass up.
- 30:10I think. It would be.
- 30:12And yeah, he has a big year. Could be could be talking about
- 30:17DJ Vanamay. Well, let's go back to last
- 30:20Saturday, Tom, and obviously the question that we've asked
- 30:23everybody this week and we're going to ask you as well because
- 30:26respect your opinion. Klinsky or Brown, who impressed
- 30:30you the most if or was it they both had their moments, Where
- 30:34are you? What did you see quarterback
- 30:35wise last week? That was 6 1/2 dozen of another.
- 30:39For me, it was just hecklinsky mobility, probably a little bit
- 30:46better, you know, completed more passes, but Hank had a couple of
- 30:52throws where you're like, boy, that's that's really good.
- 30:55And the other thing that we didn't have was a lot of the
- 30:59wide receivers that are going to actually catch footballs.
- 31:02We're just not out there. Even though Reese Vanders, he
- 31:06was out there a little bit. It was a little bit because they
- 31:10shut guys down quick because the last thing you want is to have
- 31:13some guy blow out a knee or something in the last practice
- 31:17of the spring. So they they were very careful.
- 31:21They have Tony Diaz and some of the other guys were out.
- 31:25So it's, it was hard to really kind of gauge things.
- 31:29I I, I don't know slight edge to Hank Brown, but I, I don't know
- 31:33how you how you say one over the other.
- 31:36We've talked a ton about Tony Diaz.
- 31:38Can you tell us a little bit more about Evan James, the other
- 31:41wide receiver transfer? There was also buzz about him,
- 31:44speedster, big guy. And with both Diaz and James, I
- 31:47think both those guys got some work to do in the offseason in
- 31:50the weight room and working with Coach Ray and building
- 31:52themselves up. But what can you tell us about
- 31:54Evan James, and do you anticipate at minimum, he's
- 31:57going to be a pretty important rotational piece of wide
- 31:59receiver? Yeah, I think he's going to be
- 32:02in the in the mix for for playing time for sure.
- 32:06And you know, he's a guy that is coming in from Furman had 65
- 32:12receptions for almost 800 yards Atds last year.
- 32:15And the thing that I've heard about him was kept kind of
- 32:18dinged up early and then he got healthy and really impressed
- 32:23them quickly and then kind of got dinged up again.
- 32:26So like you said, he's going to have to get stronger and and get
- 32:30a little bit bigger, but he's a guy that's going to be in that
- 32:33rotation of receivers I think for sure.
- 32:37And you probably want 5-6 guys that you can rotate out there
- 32:40receiver. And I, I think as long as he's
- 32:43healthy, he's going to, he's going to be one of those guys.
- 32:45Both he and Diaz have got to put on some, some weight.
- 32:50Talking to Tim Lester a little bit.
- 32:51He's just like, yeah, I kind of those guys got to get bigger if
- 32:54they're going to survive in the Big 10.
- 32:55So that's going to be the next couple of months for both those
- 33:00guys is going to be let's get up to 18185 something like that
- 33:06realistically and and get stronger and sturdy for the for
- 33:10the upcoming season. What about special teams, Tom?
- 33:13Any punter catch your eye of the kickers who who looked better to
- 33:18you? Let's go to special teams.
- 33:20For that, I tell you what, out of the the two punters, I think
- 33:24the Philpott kid who's transferred over from Simpson
- 33:26was I think at walking Northwest, he's he's the guy
- 33:30that was getting the first team raps.
- 33:32So I think maybe he might be the guy out of the gate, at least
- 33:36right now, that that has the edge.
- 33:40Kadenburg did not kick. So it was the the the kid from
- 33:43the kid from North Dakota State that starts his high school.
- 33:48Yeah, it was that key. He's he's probably the guy I
- 33:52think right now. But neither of the those two
- 33:56guys have that that power leg that that Drew Stevens has, at
- 34:01least at this point in their career, or Druid power through
- 34:0555 yarders. These are kind of floaters that
- 34:09are going up, but pretty good accuracy, I thought from Ozick,
- 34:14at least what we saw that day. We jump over to defense and hard
- 34:21to take a whole lot there. Is it going to be free safety
- 34:25ultimately for Zach Luttmer? Obviously they can play him in
- 34:27any of the five defensive back positions.
- 34:29Is it that? And if that's the case, who
- 34:31becomes the cash if it is free safety for Lutmer?
- 34:34Yeah, it seems like that's where Bill is trending towards, and I
- 34:39kind of thought maybe he'd try and do something else.
- 34:42But that free safety position is just so important in terms of
- 34:46knowing the defense. And you have to know the defense
- 34:49to call it out everything and get people in the right spot.
- 34:52But the thing I worry about with that for Iowa is they really
- 34:56need Lutmer's playmaking ability and that kind of takes that
- 35:00away, at least at some level. So I think right now Jacob
- 35:06Wallace seems like the guy that might be the cash.
- 35:10Maybe Godfrey, one of those two guys.
- 35:14I think probably the odds on favorite to be the cash this
- 35:17this year. Phil seems to be really high on
- 35:20Wallace and and some of the other guys.
- 35:23I was talking to Deshawn Lee about him and his eyes just
- 35:26light up because he's just like this kids really special.
- 35:29He's really good. So I, I, I kind of mean Wallace
- 35:33right now, kind. Of you, I don't remember him
- 35:36from last year. Played very little, right?
- 35:38Yeah, he played at the end of the year what it was play
- 35:41against Nebraska, I think they forced to fumble something like
- 35:45that. And he and Godfrey were both
- 35:47kind of making a few plays against the Huskers.
- 35:49And so, yeah, I he's, he's one of those guys they got kind of
- 35:55late in the process too. So he's kind of flying under the
- 35:58radar and end up getting them. And Phil just love, I mean,
- 36:02every time we talk to Phil about defensive backs, he brings up
- 36:05Wally as he calls him. So he just, I think you've got
- 36:09to watch. Class of 2027 quarterback is in
- 36:13the fold. Braden Santi Bienz has made his
- 36:16commitment to Iowa. He's a guy that split time at
- 36:18high school last year, not eye popping numbers, but really good
- 36:22athlete. I think athleticism is kind of
- 36:23the thing that stands out with him.
- 36:26Yeah, it's interesting because after I will miss that on take
- 36:31Narat the from the Chicago area. That was a kind of a legacy
- 36:35recruit. And by the way, Pete Nakos from
- 36:38on three had a story about some of those Elite 11 quarterbacks
- 36:42that that Jake is one of those guys.
- 36:45And some of the talk was that those guys were the average
- 36:50salary is, is like a half million bucks for a freshman
- 36:53quarterback that level. So I think that may have been
- 36:57one of the one of the driving reasons because I, I, I can rest
- 37:01assured, I don't believe that I was going to give that kind of
- 37:05cash to a guy who hasn't played it down in college.
- 37:07So anyway, not that I'm saying he chase the dollar, but it was
- 37:13just, you know, it just if you're going to use that as one
- 37:15of your criteria, it might not lend itself to Iowa, but go
- 37:21ahead. No, I was just about to say I
- 37:22was going to change. I was going to go to basketball.
- 37:24We kind of thought that there was going to be an extension
- 37:26coming coaching wise in the state.
- 37:27Didn't know that it would be T JS news that came first.
- 37:31I I thought that, you know, toward the end of the
- 37:33tournament, seemingly things were headed in the right
- 37:36direction. How close is Mcculluman gets to
- 37:39coming up with a, you know, a contract suitable to both
- 37:42parties? Are they still negotiating?
- 37:44Where's that at? Any idea Tom?
- 37:46Yeah, I haven't heard any more updates.
- 37:48I thought it would have. I know they kind of had agreed
- 37:53to kind of the the basics of the deal and that was back when the
- 37:58tournament was going on. But, you know, years and kind of
- 38:02financial terms. But I think one of the things
- 38:06that coaches are looking for now is some assurances on NIL
- 38:12because if you don't have that money it you're you're going to
- 38:16be in trouble if you don't have if you're a Big 10 coach.
- 38:19I mean, Dusty May was talking about it like yesterday in an
- 38:22interview. He's like, yeah, we had spent 10
- 38:25million last year. We're going to be spending more
- 38:27than that this year for sure, because we have to keep up with
- 38:30with everything. So it is it is imperative for
- 38:34coaches that they have to have the financial resources to go
- 38:38out and get players that they need and and to keep players
- 38:41that they want to keep. One of the big bore names on the
- 38:45board for the class of 2027 will be off the board next week.
- 38:49Donovan Davis, a four-star is going to make his commitment.
- 38:51Both Iowa and Iowa State are involved for his services and
- 38:55made his final five along with Marquette, Wisconsin.
- 38:58There was one other in there lean Iowa State.
- 39:01Is that what you're hearing on Donovan Davis or the Hawkeye
- 39:03still got a shot? Yeah, it's just every everything
- 39:07I've heard is just indications are that Iowa State TJ does well
- 39:12those Wisconsin. Kids.
- 39:14He just does he just gets kids out of Wisconsin and he's got
- 39:17connections with those kids and I think he's going to that's
- 39:22that would be my guess is that he ends up cyclone and now we'll
- 39:26just we'll have to wait to see what what Ben McCollum wants to
- 39:31do with that that class. I know he's going to be spending
- 39:35a lot of his time on the point guard position.
- 39:38So they've they've got a live period coming up May 15th to
- 39:4217th. Will they'll be out on the road.
- 39:44So I would suspect that Ben will be up front and centre for a
- 39:50couple of the point guards that they're after.
- 39:52Tom Caker, hawkeyereport.com joins us.
- 39:55Tom, one more time. Let's do the Chuck Long charity
- 39:57auction when it ends. It's coming to its conclusion
- 40:01here the next little while. What?
- 40:03What can you tell us? Yeah, it's annual.
- 40:07It's the 29th annual Chuck Long Charity Auction and then

- 40:31the 86 Rose Bowl team that he's giving away too.
- 40:34So you can can learn that old fashioned stuff.
- 40:37Just so many cool things and and for not just sports fans or Iowa
- 40:42fans, but there's, you know, knickers, jewelry, and there's
- 40:45some, you know, Panera Bread and all kinds of stuff.
- 40:49There's even a refrigerator in there that they're giving away.
- 40:52So and some historical things like the program for the 1939
- 40:56Iowa Notre Dame game that kind of launched now connect to the
- 41:01to the Heisman Trophy. So just some really cool
- 41:06collector's items. So yeah, you can go to give.
