- 0:00Speaker 1: We all tackle hurdles on a day today basis, and
- 0:04Speaker 1: getting over them starts with being honest with yourself. If
- 0:08Speaker 1: you feel overwhelmed, and hey, we all do at times.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Step one to getting through the fog is to admit
- 0:17Speaker 1: to yourself what's going on, have some grace, and then
- 0:21Speaker 1: push forward with an action plan.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Hey, Hurdler's Emily A. Badi here bringing you another installment.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Of Hurdle Moment from Hurdle this week, I am chatting
- 0:46Speaker 1: about how to handle the feeling of overwhelm. Listen, I
- 0:52Speaker 1: have been there. In fact, I kind of feel as
- 0:54Speaker 1: though I am there right now. It always happens this
- 0:58Speaker 1: time of year. People are really excited to get back
- 1:01Speaker 1: into the swing of things after perhaps checking out a little.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Bit for the summer.
- 1:06Speaker 1: And I feel like it may be extra big this
- 1:11Speaker 1: feeling this year because some people are getting back into
- 1:14Speaker 1: the swing of things for the first time all year.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Because twenty twenty and so here we are.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Our inboxes are boppin', people are enthusiastic, People want to
- 1:26Speaker 1: make deals, get answers, be a little bit aggressive, and
- 1:30Speaker 1: it can feel like a lot. Yeah, sounds familiar, right.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Here's the deal. First and foremost you are not alone,
- 1:39Speaker 1: and that's why I am chatting about it on this
- 1:41Speaker 1: week's installment of Hurdle Moment. And second of all, before
- 1:45Speaker 1: I get into this, I just want to put out
- 1:47Speaker 1: an essential reminder into the universe that you can be
- 1:51Speaker 1: the bigger person in this situation. So although it may
- 1:55Speaker 1: be instinctive to feel a little bit reactive or get
- 2:00Speaker 1: a little defensive when people demand things of you during
- 2:03Speaker 1: this time, have some grace ease into it.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Understand it's all going to be okay.
- 2:10Speaker 1: We can handle hard things, and it's onward and upward
- 2:13Speaker 1: from here.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Anyway. Of course, now is not the.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Only time of year where you may be feeling a
- 2:19Speaker 1: little bit overwhelmed. In fact, overwhelmed can come at any
- 2:23Speaker 1: time in many forms. But what's important, regardless of when
- 2:28Speaker 1: these feelings of uneasiness pop up, is that you have
- 2:31Speaker 1: the tools that you need to get through it. And
- 2:35Speaker 1: so that's what I'm offering up for this week's Hurdle Moment.

- 3:11Speaker 1: it is my favorite thing lately. I am so so sold.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I recently started using the online membership based market and
- 3:21Speaker 1: I cannot get enough of it. Basically, if you have
- 3:24Speaker 1: never used it before, it works like Costco. It's five
- 3:28Speaker 1: dollars a month for twelve months or nine ninety five
- 3:31Speaker 1: month if you buy it by the month, and this
- 3:34Speaker 1: membership gets you twenty five to fifty percent off of
- 3:39Speaker 1: regular priced things that sometimes literally cost an arm and
- 3:43Speaker 1: a leg at your grocery store. Not only do they
- 3:46Speaker 1: have a ton of brands that I love, like Bobos
- 3:50Speaker 1: and Good Karma and missus Myers, Aloha, Luna, Simply Organic.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I mean literally the list is endless, but they also
- 3:59Speaker 1: have a ton of really great items in their Thrive

- 4:10Speaker 1: pastas and olive oil to vanilla extract spices, syrups, and
- 4:15Speaker 1: even paper goods nut butters. There is no limit to

- 5:02Speaker 2: So yesterday I am sitting at my desk.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I realized that it had been about twelve minutes give
- 5:08Speaker 1: or take since I had done anything, and I was
- 5:11Speaker 1: just blankly staring at my screen feeling completely stuck. Sounds familiar,
- 5:17Speaker 1: I'm sure it does, because we've all been there this
- 5:20Speaker 1: time of year, super overwhelming, and I knew in that
- 5:24Speaker 1: moment that I needed to get up and change something
- 5:27Speaker 1: about the circumstance. So I took a walk around the block.
- 5:30Speaker 1: The walk may or may not have ended in my
- 5:32Speaker 1: local grocery store. I grabbed two different types of ice
- 5:36Speaker 1: cream and a bag of Peda chips, came home, had
- 5:40Speaker 1: some of said ice cream and a couple of said
- 5:42Speaker 1: Peda chips, poured myself a tall glass of water, and
- 5:46Speaker 1: got back into the swing of things. And listen, everyone
- 5:50Speaker 1: is going to have different strategies that work for them.
- 5:53Speaker 1: But here I am today to share some of my
- 5:56Speaker 1: full proof strategies that helped me navigate that ever popular,
- 6:01Speaker 1: often loathed feeling of feeling overwhelmed. My first strategy get
- 6:07Speaker 1: up and move without fail. Even in the height of COVID.
- 6:11Speaker 1: If I needed to get out of my own way,
- 6:15Speaker 1: the first thing I would do would be put on
- 6:17Speaker 1: some shoes, walk down the stairs, and take a walk
- 6:20Speaker 1: around the block. Now, granted, not every walk ends at
- 6:24Speaker 1: the grocery store with ice cream in hand, and that's okay.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Sometimes just changing your venue, changing your circumstance, shifting a
- 6:31Speaker 1: little bit, can help you get your brain going in
- 6:34Speaker 1: a different direction and can help you think more clearly.
- 6:38Speaker 1: For me, this break, it might only be ten minutes,
- 6:41Speaker 1: But those ten minutes are my opportunity to give back
- 6:46Speaker 1: to myself. My next strategy for handling that feeling of
- 6:50Speaker 1: overwhelmed talk to someone about it. I think oftentimes when
- 6:53Speaker 1: we feel this way, we feel as though we are
- 6:56Speaker 1: the only person that is feeling this way, and that
- 6:58Speaker 1: is so not true. So nine times out of ten,
- 7:01Speaker 1: I bet if you were to reach out to a
- 7:03Speaker 1: friend and say, oh, today is just not my day, they.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Might be like, actually, today's not my day either.
- 7:09Speaker 1: You are not alone, So open up to a friend,
- 7:14Speaker 1: talk to them about what is going on, and perhaps
- 7:17Speaker 1: that friend can be the person you can bounce an
- 7:20Speaker 1: idea off of maybe there is something in particular with
- 7:22Speaker 1: work that is making you feel stuck, or even help
- 7:25Speaker 1: you just vent on some anxieties. For me, oftentimes that
- 7:30Speaker 1: feeling of overwhelm it's not attributed to one specific incidence
- 7:34Speaker 1: or an event, but rather to a multitude of events
- 7:36Speaker 1: that just feel as though they are boiling over. So
- 7:39Speaker 1: when you vocalize what's going on, when you get something
- 7:42Speaker 1: off of your chest, it can definitely help you a
- 7:45Speaker 1: gain new perspective and be just alleviate some of that
- 7:50Speaker 1: tension that's just built up in there, you know, I
- 7:53Speaker 1: think so often also, we just want to be strong, right,
- 7:56Speaker 1: We don't want to give off the vibe that something
- 8:01Speaker 1: is up. But in this effort of wanting to be strong,
- 8:05Speaker 1: in this effort of trying to quote unquote save face,
- 8:08Speaker 1: you're not necessarily always taking care of your best interests
- 8:12Speaker 1: and perhaps not really valuing your mental health. It's okay
- 8:17Speaker 1: to not be okay. It's okay to feel this way,
- 8:21Speaker 1: and the best thing that you can do to get
- 8:24Speaker 1: out of your own way is sometimes to let somebody else.
- 8:28Speaker 1: In my next strategy for dealing with overwhelm, write things down.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Oftentimes we can't articulate necessarily where this feeling is coming
- 8:37Speaker 1: from or why it is that we are in this
- 8:41Speaker 1: quote unquote rut.
- 8:42Speaker 2: But when you.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Start to write things down, you may be able to identify, Hey,
- 8:47Speaker 1: there's something that's really weighing on me that maybe I
- 8:49Speaker 1: didn't exactly realize. This is a big reason why journaling
- 8:54Speaker 1: is in my regular routine. It's how I start each
- 8:56Speaker 1: and every day, finishing off the journal entry with a
- 8:59Speaker 1: highlight something that was positive for my past twenty four hours.
- 9:03Speaker 1: It helps me start things on an optimistic foot. It
- 9:06Speaker 1: lets me vent, even if it's just to myself on
- 9:09Speaker 1: some white lined pages and a small gray notebook, and
- 9:13Speaker 1: gives me the chance just to be me as I
- 9:17Speaker 1: am unfiltered on the writing things down tip. My next
- 9:23Speaker 1: suggestion for navigating overwhelm is to make some sort of
- 9:28Speaker 1: doable to do list. You know, I love the smart goals, specific, measurable, attainable, realistic,
- 9:35Speaker 1: and time bound. And although your to do list might
- 9:37Speaker 1: have a few of these, what's important is that your
- 9:40Speaker 1: to do list is just that. I can't reiterate this
- 9:44Speaker 1: enough doable. If you feel overwhelmed, I suggest that you
- 9:48Speaker 1: write down three or four action items that you know
- 9:52Speaker 1: you can complete that day, Even the smallest thing like
- 9:57Speaker 1: do the dishes in the sink, or make the bed,
- 10:01Speaker 1: or send XYZ this important email. Those things they might
- 10:06Speaker 1: not take a lot of time, but seeing the check mark,
- 10:09Speaker 1: seeing that action item completed, it's something that makes you
- 10:14Speaker 1: feel productive. It helps you get out of your own
- 10:16Speaker 1: way and enables you to then perhaps check off the
- 10:20Speaker 1: bigger items on that to do list. Once you feel
- 10:25Speaker 1: productive despite your overwhelm, it opens up the doors for
- 10:29Speaker 1: you to take back the control that you feel as.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Though you have lost.
- 10:34Speaker 1: My last tip today for navigating the feeling of overwhelm
- 10:39Speaker 1: is perhaps the most critical.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Admit it to yourself.
- 10:44Speaker 1: If you don't recognize the issue, you cannot take action
- 10:49Speaker 1: against it. Again, if you do not recognize the issue,
- 10:54Speaker 1: you cannot take action against it.
- 10:58Speaker 2: We all tackle hurdle.
- 11:00Speaker 1: On a day to day basis, and getting over them
- 11:03Speaker 1: starts with being honest with yourself. If you feel overwhelmed,
- 11:08Speaker 1: and hey, we all do it times. Step one to
- 11:12Speaker 1: getting through the fog is to admit to yourself what's
- 11:15Speaker 1: going on, have some grace, and then push forward with
- 11:20Speaker 1: an action plan. Approaching this period this anxiety with an
- 11:25Speaker 1: I can attitude instead of feeling as though you are
- 11:29Speaker 1: drowning and you can't. That is what's going to help
- 11:32Speaker 1: you make it through to the other side. I've been there,
- 11:35Speaker 1: You've been there. We're all going through it at one
- 11:38Speaker 1: time or another. Show up, admit, make smart goals, actionable
- 11:44Speaker 1: to do lists, talk to a friend, take.
- 11:47Speaker 2: A break and be kind.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Now, go ahead, kick some butt and let me know
- 11:52Speaker 1: how it goes again. Tag me on Instagram at Emily
