- 0:00Welcome to the show, everybody!
- 0:01I'm Dangerous Zygos, C.E.O.
- 0:03of Currency Development, here with DJ Universe, Calvin Blingwell,
- 0:07and Dandy Market.
- 0:08And team, I need to start with a number that completely reshapes how we look at
- 0:13hip-hop equity: seventy-five million dollars.
- 0:16That is the upper estimate of what the superstar Future reportedly locked in for his
- 0:21publishing catalog from 2004 to 2020.
- 0:25Seventy-five million for the publishing of six hundred and twelve songs,
- 0:29including monster tracks like "Way 2 Sexy" and "Wait For U."
- 0:33But look, as an artist coming up out of LSU, now out here in Calabasas trying to
- 0:38navigate these contracts, the real headline isn't just the bag.
- 0:42It's what he *didn't* sell.
- 0:44Future kept his masters.
- 0:46He sold the publishing, not the actual sound recordings.
- 0:50And that distinction is the whole story right there!
- 0:53As a producer and manager, I am constantly explaining this to artists.
- 0:57Think of it like this: the publishing is the blueprint--the lyrics,
- 1:02the melody, the composition written on a napkin.
- 1:05The master is the physical house built on that property--the actual audio file,
- 1:10the precise vocal print of Future floating over a Metro Boomin 808.
- 1:16Exactly, you gotta stay lit to survive, but you also gotta stay smart.
- 1:20By keeping those masters, Future still controls the actual recordings.
- 1:25If someone wants to stream "Mask Off" on Spotify, that master royalty still flows to
- 1:30his pocket.
- 1:32He only cashed out on the songwriting share of those six hundred and twelve tracks.
- 1:37But let's be real about the legacy play here.
- 1:39If these songs are still pulling in millions of streams every single week,
- 1:43why sell the publishing rights now?
- 1:45To me, there's always a tension between holding out for lifetime control and taking
- 1:50a massive, guaranteed nine-figure-adjacent check while your catalog is at peak
- 1:55cultural relevance.
- 1:57It is a classic liquidity play, Calvin.
- 1:59From a financial development perspective, seventy-five million dollars cash in hand
- 2:03today can be immediately deployed into high-yield assets, real estate,
- 2:08or venture capital.
- 2:09If you hold onto the publishing, you are waiting fifteen to twenty years of
- 2:13micro-transactions from streaming platforms just to recoup that same valuation,
- 2:17adjusted for inflation.
- 2:20And let's look at the actual complexity of that publishing pie.
- 2:24When Influence Media Partners bought this catalog, they didn't just buy "Future's
- 2:29music."
- 2:30They bought his *share* of the compositions.
- 2:33On a track like "Wait For U," you've got Future, you've got Drake,
- 2:38Tems, and producers like FnZ and Tae Beast.
- 2:42That means the publishing pie is already split five or six ways.
- 2:47When you sell your publishing, you are selling your specific slice of that
- 2:52songwriting cake, which is why having clean metadata and registered splits from day
- 2:57one is so critical.
- 2:59So let's talk about that valuation.
- 3:01Seventy-five million for a catalog spanning sixteen years tells me that Wall Street
- 3:06and private equity firms like Influence Media are still paying massive
- 3:09multiples--sometimes fifteen to twenty times annual net publisher's share--for
- 3:14proven streaming-era hits.
- 3:17They are treating hip-hop catalogs like prime real estate.
- 3:21They absolutely are, Dandy.
- 3:23But the buyer's math is different than the artist's math.
- 3:25The buyer is betting on sync licensing--getting "Life Is Good" in a high-budget
- 3:30Super Bowl commercial or a Netflix series--alongside international collection
- 3:36societies capturing every single radio play in Europe and Asia.
- 3:40That steady, predictable yield is what those institutional funds crave.
- 3:45But for an independent artist looking at this, it can feel like a different
- 3:49universe.
- 3:50We aren't getting offered seventy-five million dollar checks.
- 3:53But the lesson is identical: you have to build the asset before you can ever
- 3:57leverage it.
- 3:58If you don't register your songs with ASCAP or BMI, if you don't know who owns what
- 4:03percentage of the beat, you are leaving your future catalog in a complete mess.
- 4:09Man, that is a sermon right there!
- 4:11I tell my artists all the time: do the paperwork when the song is recorded,
- 4:16not when the check is coming.
- 4:18If you wait until a major label or a publisher is knocking on your door to clean up
- 4:22your splits, you've already lost your leverage.
- 4:26It really comes down to what we call Supreme Mathematics.
- 4:29Knowledge is knowing exactly what you own--every split, every writer share,
- 4:35every master right.
- 4:37Wisdom is knowing when to make the move, whether that's holding your assets for the
- 4:42long haul or cashing out at the absolute peak of the market.
- 4:47And Power is controlling your own narrative and your own financial destiny before an
- 4:51outside corporation prices your life's work for you.
- 4:55Future showed the industry that you can secure the bag without giving up your
- 4:58ultimate legacy.
- 5:00That is the real blueprint.
- 5:01Thank you for joining us on this breakdown.
