- 0:02Speaker 1: On back streets.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Well, it is the Jackson Tuesday here.
- 0:17Speaker 3: I'm thirteen under the sign.
- 0:18Speaker 2: As we said, the return cuts on Tuesdays are not
- 0:24Speaker 2: limited to, but certainly inclusive of the immortal Steamy Ravon
- 0:28Speaker 2: in the two o'clock hour, the iconic Willie Nelson in
- 0:32Speaker 2: the three o'clock hour, and the King George Street here
- 0:36Speaker 2: in the four o'clock hour. I got a feeling I
- 0:38Speaker 2: know why you selected this particular piece at the road
- 0:41Speaker 2: Less Travel, the little snippet from Field of Dreams in
- 0:44Speaker 2: the beginning.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Absolutely, And.
- 0:48Speaker 2: I would not say that our next guest right now
- 0:52Speaker 2: is on the.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Road less Travel.
- 0:54Speaker 2: In fact, if you've driven Interstate eighty between Chicago and Iowa,
- 0:58Speaker 2: you know that it's a road quite well traveled. But
- 1:01Speaker 2: then again, Geene Watson, our MLB insider, has traveled down
- 1:05Speaker 2: many roads. Am I right, Gino, you're on I eighty
- 1:09Speaker 2: right now going west from Chicago.
- 1:13Speaker 4: I think that's exactly right now. I will tell you
- 1:16Speaker 4: I've been all over the world, but I've never been
- 1:18Speaker 4: on this highway. So it's actually pretty exciting. It's a
- 1:21Speaker 4: beautiful day. We had some really big time storms in
- 1:24Speaker 4: Chicago this morning, so we're off till at late start.
- 1:27Speaker 3: But we're on our way and it's a beautiful day.
- 1:29Speaker 3: All right. Two things.
- 1:30Speaker 2: First of all, I want you to tell everybody why
- 1:35Speaker 2: you're headed there, and then I want you to tell
- 1:37Speaker 2: everybody when you say we, who is in the car
- 1:40Speaker 2: with you. But let's start off first of all, the
- 1:42Speaker 2: destination and the assignment for you.
- 1:46Speaker 4: The destination is the Field of Dreams for the high
- 1:49Speaker 4: school All American Game and also the Major League game
- 1:54Speaker 4: between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Minnesota Twins, which will
- 1:57Speaker 4: lead to my person I'm traveling with is the one
- 2:01Speaker 4: and only Jim Toldy Hall of Famer and a dear friend,
- 2:04Speaker 4: and we worked together, and so we're like, we got
- 2:07Speaker 4: bags of food and we're headed west and it's a
- 2:09Speaker 4: great day.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Well, anytime you can be doing that, especially
- 2:12Speaker 2: if you're if you're rolling with the Hall of Famer,
- 2:14Speaker 2: you know, I was looking and I couldn't remember exactly
- 2:19Speaker 2: who all that Jim went into the Hall of Fame with,
- 2:22Speaker 2: and I went back and then for folks, I didn't
- 2:24Speaker 2: know it was in twenty eighteen, but.
- 2:25Speaker 3: This class was amazing.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Trevor Hopp and Vladimir Guerrero senior and Chipper Jones, I mean,
- 2:32Speaker 2: and he fit right in with that group. That's that's
- 2:34Speaker 2: an amazing We get real good Hall of Fame classes
- 2:37Speaker 2: every year, but that's one of the best to all
- 2:40Speaker 2: for those guys all going in together, don't you think.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Our our relationship kind of began because we worked together
- 2:48Speaker 4: with the White Sox and he found out that I
- 2:51Speaker 4: was close with Nolan, and so he and I facetimed.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Nolan one day.
- 2:56Speaker 4: He was in his golf cart and I said, Nolan,
- 2:59Speaker 4: I'm here with Jim to me and he said, hey, Jim,
- 3:01Speaker 4: how are you doing? And Jim responded, Hey, Noley, how
- 3:04Speaker 4: are you? And I said, Nolan, Jim's been sitting here
- 3:06Speaker 4: talking about how he used to wear you out. And
- 3:10Speaker 4: it got some good laughs. But yeah, that's a great class.
- 3:14Speaker 4: I was sad because I would have loved to have
- 3:16Speaker 4: been there that day. Jim has been such a great
- 3:19Speaker 4: friend and mentor to me, and we talk about all
- 3:21Speaker 4: the time how it would have been nice to have
- 3:24Speaker 4: known each other, you know, ten fifteen years ago. But
- 3:27Speaker 4: it's great being with him now.
- 3:28Speaker 3: No doubt about it. And glad he's rolling alongside.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Let me jump right in and get your thoughts of
- 3:35Speaker 2: what you said we talked about right after the trade deadline.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I've noticed some pieces today where people are doing a
- 3:42Speaker 2: further review of what's happened with the trade deadline. I
- 3:45Speaker 2: want to get, first of all, your take on the
- 3:48Speaker 2: teams that really have caught fire, because you predicted this.
- 3:51Speaker 3: You said this, keep.
- 3:53Speaker 2: An eye, continue to keep an eye on the Red Sox,
- 3:56Speaker 2: and then you said, keep an eye. The Tigers are
- 3:59Speaker 2: not yet done. And and then you said, uh, the
- 4:02Speaker 2: Rangers are not dead, not dead yet, and they've been
- 4:06Speaker 2: going well. You said the Phillies would catch fire again
- 4:09Speaker 2: and they've been doing pretty well, and uh, and then
- 4:12Speaker 2: and then you also said the Padres were not dead yet.
- 4:16Speaker 2: And all they've done is win seven of their last
- 4:18Speaker 2: eight BAUL games. What have you seen from those teams
- 4:22Speaker 2: that have stood out to why they were able to
- 4:24Speaker 2: catch fire here as we're, you know, going through the
- 4:26Speaker 2: dark days of summer.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Well with every team except for the Tigers, I would
- 4:31Speaker 4: say that it begins and ends with starting pitching. I mean,
- 4:34Speaker 4: it's going to be the currency of the game forever.
- 4:36Speaker 4: We were actually just talking about that. I think at
- 4:39Speaker 4: some point the loss of Scoobel and Mize will begin
- 4:42Speaker 4: to take its toll as you begin to make three
- 4:45Speaker 4: and four turns around the rotation. I don't think you
- 4:48Speaker 4: can replace a Scoobol or Amis Now. They do have
- 4:51Speaker 4: Jackson Joe Back, who is one of the best young
- 4:53Speaker 4: pitchers in the game of baseball, but even he's going
- 4:56Speaker 4: to have to be monitored down the stretch coming back
- 4:58Speaker 4: from Tommy John. But with everybody else, it's really been
- 5:02Speaker 4: the starting pitching. It is the summer months begin to
- 5:05Speaker 4: heat up and hitters starting to eat up. When you've
- 5:08Speaker 4: got that solid starting pitching and having guys that can
- 5:11Speaker 4: go deep into games and you're not taxing your bullpen,
- 5:14Speaker 4: that's gonna be quite the advantage for those teams. And
- 5:16Speaker 4: I think that's what you've seen with Boston, with San Diego,
- 5:20Speaker 4: with with Phil delph Is. They've got bell cow type
- 5:24Speaker 4: starters that can go deep in the games. And when
- 5:26Speaker 4: you have that and your bullpen's not being taxed every night,
- 5:29Speaker 4: you got a chance to win baseball game, no.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Doubt about it.
- 5:32Speaker 2: And I would be remiss if I didn't mention another
- 5:34Speaker 2: team in the National League, West Arizona, which if the
- 5:38Speaker 2: playoffs began today would be in the postseason. Here's another
- 5:41Speaker 2: teams that's pushing They at one time or fifteen games
- 5:45Speaker 2: back of the Dodgers in the West. They cut exactly
- 5:48Speaker 2: half of that depth sit off there within seven and
- 5:50Speaker 2: a half. How about what Tory Leavello has done with
- 5:53Speaker 2: his guys here as the second half is cranked up.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Truly amazing what they've done, especially with the injury they've
- 6:00Speaker 4: taken on the mound, not only to their stars but
- 6:03Speaker 4: to their bullpen. But they have a very young, productive offense.
- 6:06Speaker 4: They play with a lot of excitement on the field,
- 6:09Speaker 4: and you know, Craig, all we hear about is competitive imbalance,
- 6:14Speaker 4: and all we're seeing is a lot of teams that
- 6:17Speaker 4: still have a chance to go on a seven to
- 6:20Speaker 4: ten game streak and push their way into the playoffs
- 6:23Speaker 4: and those wild card those are really going to be
- 6:25Speaker 4: great races down to the last week.
- 6:27Speaker 3: No doubt about it.
- 6:28Speaker 2: All Right on the other side of that, eyebrows are
- 6:31Speaker 2: being raised about the team that I like so much
- 6:33Speaker 2: about the Dodgers who lost seven in a row, lost
- 6:36Speaker 2: eight of nine. Now they didn't win last night, And
- 6:39Speaker 2: the things that are catching people's eye. You said from
- 6:42Speaker 2: the start and others have said it as well. They're
- 6:45Speaker 2: trying to get to the finish line. Last year at
- 6:47Speaker 2: this same time in August, they went through a slump.
- 6:50Speaker 2: They lost seven in a row, just like this year,
- 6:52Speaker 2: kind of recovered in September and ended up not having
- 6:55Speaker 2: a home field advantage. We weren't even the top two seat.
- 6:58Speaker 2: They were a three seed and had to do it
- 6:59Speaker 2: the hard way. As it stands right now, they would
- 7:01Speaker 2: be a three seed. They do have Milwaukee come in
- 7:04Speaker 2: to town this weekend, which will be really big. But
- 7:07Speaker 2: the things that stood out to me and what are
- 7:09Speaker 2: standing out to people is the starting pigeon that was
- 7:11Speaker 2: so good for them has fallen off of late. Justin Robleski,
- 7:14Speaker 2: an All Star, has lost three consecutive outings. They've had
- 7:17Speaker 2: other even Yama Motor has not been able to go
- 7:19Speaker 2: as deep in the games. And the thing that was
- 7:21Speaker 2: really alarming for a bit was Edwin Diaz coming off injury.
- 7:26Speaker 2: What going into coming out of the bullpen last night
- 7:28Speaker 2: was oh to one with a ten to four oeer.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Now he looked like the old Edwin Dz last night
- 7:35Speaker 2: had his first one, two three inning as a Dodger. Bam, bam,
- 7:37Speaker 2: Bam and closed it out, had that slider work and
- 7:40Speaker 2: then got the save off of that, And they do
- 7:42Speaker 2: get Snell back tonight, so he'll go back into the
- 7:47Speaker 2: rotation tonight for the Dodgers. But is this a team
- 7:51Speaker 2: still just trying to bite its time to get to
- 7:53Speaker 2: that or do they have to kind of kick it
- 7:55Speaker 2: in high gear a little bit here, especially with guys
- 7:58Speaker 2: like Mookie bats batt and two twenty nine and some
- 8:01Speaker 2: of the other guys in the two thirty five to
- 8:03Speaker 2: two forty range a Kyle Tucker another one of those guys.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Well, I don't think you can ever turn it off
- 8:09Speaker 4: and turn it back on. I do think there's a
- 8:13Speaker 4: real tax to having two long seasons like this team
- 8:17Speaker 4: has had. I think the addition of Scooball is tremendous
- 8:21Speaker 4: for them, because whenever you have a team that's won,
- 8:23Speaker 4: like they've won together for two years, you kind of
- 8:26Speaker 4: want to put on top. You want to pile on
- 8:29Speaker 4: with players that are really talented that haven't won world championships,
- 8:33Speaker 4: because they're going to be the driving force behind the energy.
- 8:37Speaker 4: But I don't think you can begin to panic. I
- 8:39Speaker 4: still think they're the favorites to win the World Series.
- 8:42Speaker 4: You know, we just came out of a big statement
- 8:44Speaker 4: series this past weekend with Cleveland coming to town. We
- 8:47Speaker 4: were able to win two out of three, which ensured
- 8:50Speaker 4: the tie breaker. Should we they sweep us, the next
- 8:53Speaker 4: time we play.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Them, we have the tiebreaker.
- 8:56Speaker 4: This is a big statement series for Milwaukee and LA.
- 8:59Speaker 4: This weekend to Milwaukee will tell you they believe they're
- 9:03Speaker 4: the most talented, most fundamentally sound team in baseball, and
- 9:06Speaker 4: so they're coming in there with a real edge. So
- 9:09Speaker 4: if ever the Dodgers, we're going to pick it up
- 9:12Speaker 4: and turn it on. This weekend's going to be the
- 9:14Speaker 4: weekend where they want to do that.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Here's a popular question, GINO, how does a guy like
- 9:19Speaker 2: Miserowski throw as many one hundred plus mile per hour
- 9:25Speaker 2: pitches in and outing? I think everybody's just waiting for
- 9:28Speaker 2: the other shoot to drop, and all of a sudden,
- 9:29Speaker 2: you hear, alwa, he's got a UCL issue.
- 9:31Speaker 3: He's going to have to have Tommy John.
- 9:32Speaker 2: But he continues to go out night after night and
- 9:36Speaker 2: just throw a bucket full of one hundred mile per
- 9:39Speaker 2: hour plus pitches.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Well, I've said it before. Mazerowski's from a small town
- 9:47Speaker 4: in Missouri, one one blinking light in Missouri, and we
- 9:51Speaker 4: all know of a Hall of Fame pitcher from a
- 9:53Speaker 4: really small town in South Texas. And Jacob Mizerowski is
- 9:57Speaker 4: as close to Nolan Ryan as I've ever seen in
- 10:00Speaker 4: my life. If you could ever compare one young picture
- 10:04Speaker 4: to what a picture looked like young in his career,
- 10:06Speaker 4: Jacob Miserowski looks just like Nolan early in his career.
- 10:10Speaker 4: And I think when you look at his size and
- 10:12Speaker 4: strength and leverage and the way he moves down the
- 10:16Speaker 4: mound and the athlete that he is and the cleanness
- 10:19Speaker 4: to his delivery, I think this one's a little bit different.
- 10:22Speaker 4: I understand where you've got a lot of guys that
- 10:25Speaker 4: are effort off the mound and blowing it out and
- 10:27Speaker 4: blowing and going, and you can say, yeah, that guy
- 10:29Speaker 4: is going to blow eventually. I'm not so sure with Jacob,
- 10:32Speaker 4: because he works down the mound so well, he's in
- 10:35Speaker 4: his legs, in his delivery's so good, and that arm
- 10:38Speaker 4: is just so loose that I think we're seeing the
- 10:41Speaker 4: very beginning of what I think expect to be a
- 10:44Speaker 4: great career.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Out of Jacob Ezrawski.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Okay, So for the ogs out there, like myself, you know,
- 10:49Speaker 2: so the old timers, they'll recall since you were talking about,
- 10:53Speaker 2: you know, fireballing pictures from what you know, a very
- 10:58Speaker 2: small town. Since you're headed to the state of Iowa,
- 11:00Speaker 2: it makes me think about that guy from Van Meter
- 11:02Speaker 2: or Iowa, Bob Feller, who who Nolan was compared to.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Back in the day because of the heat.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Now, Feller wasn't as big as either Nolan was in
- 11:12Speaker 2: his career or Miseroski as.
- 11:14Speaker 3: But that's that's all about.
- 11:15Speaker 2: That heat and the way those guys conditioned themselves to
- 11:18Speaker 2: be able to throw that that hard, that long on
- 11:20Speaker 2: a regular basis, isn't it. It is?
- 11:23Speaker 4: And there was a different time back then where guys
- 11:25Speaker 4: are living in the weight room and living in the
- 11:27Speaker 4: pitch labs. Now, back then, these guys took jobs and
- 11:30Speaker 4: they were working in fields and they were you know,
- 11:33Speaker 4: they were doing a lot of manual labor that kept
- 11:36Speaker 4: their their bodies into shape. And I was able to
- 11:38Speaker 4: get to know Bob Feller toward the end of his
- 11:41Speaker 4: lifetime and just just an incredible human being that that
- 11:45Speaker 4: really loved to talk about, you know, the military and
- 11:48Speaker 4: his time in the military. Then he did baseball and
- 11:51Speaker 4: and it was honored to be able to get to
- 11:52Speaker 4: know him some. But it's just different time, it's different
- 11:55Speaker 4: ways of getting to where you want to be as
- 11:57Speaker 4: a development of a pitcher. But but Jacob Misarowski, for me,
- 12:01Speaker 4: is one of the throwbacks right now.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Teen Watson MLB insider Forest from the Chicago White Sox
- 12:06Speaker 2: front office joining us here on thirteen hundred zone. Gin know,
- 12:09Speaker 2: let me get your thoughts in the American League West.
- 12:11Speaker 2: I caught the Rangers in action last Friday night against Baltimore,
- 12:15Speaker 2: and it looks like they're hitting better than they had now.
- 12:19Speaker 3: They took two or three from the Oriels.
- 12:20Speaker 2: They lost a Sunday game, but seeing as Corey Seeger
- 12:25Speaker 2: tries to fight his way back through it to see you,
- 12:27Speaker 2: Jack Peterson, he swinging the bat better for that ball
- 12:31Speaker 2: club as well. And several of those guys have pitched
- 12:35Speaker 2: pretty well for them lats out of the bullpen. How
- 12:37Speaker 2: about the Rangers and the Astros, who have clearly the
- 12:40Speaker 2: guy who's gonna win the American League MVP, barring some
- 12:43Speaker 2: strange thing happening in Jordan Alvarez.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Two sides to the coin. I think with Texas, you've
- 12:50Speaker 4: seen in spurts where they can go on a really
- 12:53Speaker 4: good run offensively, they can go a really good run
- 12:55Speaker 4: with their starting pitching, and they can go on a
- 12:58Speaker 4: decent run with their bullpen. And the bullpen was the
- 13:00Speaker 4: one area I think they want to.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Address the most.
- 13:03Speaker 4: When they get things going consistently with all three phases
- 13:07Speaker 4: of the game, they have a chance to be very
- 13:09Speaker 4: dangerous because Skip Schumacher is such a great young manager
- 13:13Speaker 4: and they have really good starting pitching. So if they
- 13:16Speaker 4: can get it together and mesh those three entities, they're
- 13:19Speaker 4: going to be tough to beat the Astros. It's all
- 13:22Speaker 4: going to be about their starting pitching and can they stay.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Healthy on the mouth.
- 13:25Speaker 4: You know, obviously Yourdell's the best player in the American League.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Jeremy Penia is a star.
- 13:30Speaker 3: You know.
- 13:30Speaker 4: Adding Dalton Varshow has been kind of a pick me
- 13:33Speaker 4: up for them. But they've got to get innings out
- 13:35Speaker 4: of their starters. They cannot continue to tax the bullpen,
- 13:39Speaker 4: and so if they can do that, that's going to
- 13:40Speaker 4: be a great race between those two teams down the stretch.
- 13:43Speaker 4: And we go in four big games the first week
- 13:45Speaker 4: of September, looking forward to seeing what that matchup looks like.
- 13:48Speaker 2: You bet all right, So Gino, let me give you
- 13:52Speaker 2: a chance to talk a little bit about what exactly
- 13:55Speaker 2: are you going to be doing with this with this
- 13:57Speaker 2: all star game, and tell folks a little bit about it,
- 13:59Speaker 2: because it's gotta be a lot of fun. I would
- 14:01Speaker 2: imagine to be a part of something like this in
- 14:02Speaker 2: the field of dreams there in Dyersville.
- 14:05Speaker 4: Well, anytime you can get the best high school players
- 14:08Speaker 4: together in one spot, not only do you get a
- 14:11Speaker 4: chance to see, like, who of all the great players,
- 14:14Speaker 4: who's the guy that wants to stand up and be
- 14:17Speaker 4: the guy? And when you're talking about giving players of
- 14:19Speaker 4: millions of dollars in the draft to be able to
- 14:22Speaker 4: interact with the players and get a fill for their makeup,
- 14:24Speaker 4: and I think there's like six or seven Texans in
- 14:27Speaker 4: this game. But to see the best of the best
- 14:30Speaker 4: from across the country come together and who are the
- 14:33Speaker 4: secure players, who are the insecure players? Who wants to
- 14:36Speaker 4: be the guy? You can create some separation in your
- 14:39Speaker 4: mind from a makeup standpoint, and then once you get
- 14:42Speaker 4: in between the white Liones, you're just evaluating the tools
- 14:45Speaker 4: and the talent. And it's the very earliest event that
- 14:48Speaker 4: there is for the twenty twenty seven draft, and so
- 14:52Speaker 4: this is really the starting line in what will be
- 14:54Speaker 4: a long journey into the draft next July. But it's
- 14:57Speaker 4: going to be a lot of fun coupled with the
- 14:59Speaker 4: Major League game on third.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Yeah, what do you say to these kids when you
- 15:02Speaker 2: get a chance of visiting with them.
- 15:05Speaker 4: I like to hear about their families. I like to
- 15:07Speaker 4: hear about what makes them tick. You know, there are
- 15:10Speaker 4: some kids that have been through a great deal of
- 15:13Speaker 4: adversity in their lives, and those ones that can tend
- 15:16Speaker 4: to assimilate into pro ball a little better because they've
- 15:20Speaker 4: had some adversity. The game means a little bit more
- 15:23Speaker 4: to them because they it's their means for getting out
- 15:26Speaker 4: of a tough situation in life for their family. But
- 15:30Speaker 4: it's just getting to know the kids and what makes
- 15:32Speaker 4: them tick and what kind of competitors they are. You know,
- 15:35Speaker 4: are they driven by their own personal motivation? Are they
- 15:38Speaker 4: driven by the life of comparison, which in the social
- 15:41Speaker 4: media world today, so many of these young players are
- 15:44Speaker 4: driven by the life of comparison and rankings by certain groups.
- 15:49Speaker 4: And so it's just sitting inside in the heart and
- 15:51Speaker 4: the mind of the player and what makes them tick
- 15:54Speaker 4: and what drives them to be great.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Egene Watson, R MLB inside from the Chicago White Sox
- 15:59Speaker 2: front office. You know, drive it easy, drive it careful
- 16:02Speaker 2: down I eighty, especially as across the Mississippi River there
- 16:05Speaker 2: by the Quad Cities, and then head on up to
- 16:07Speaker 2: the Field of Dreams in Dyersville.
- 16:09Speaker 3: I appreciate the time.
