- 0:01All right, so I hope everyone's having a good day up to this
- 0:04point and all that good stuff. Time for a little sports topic.
- 0:14And this has to do with, you know, a, you know, the NFL.
- 0:19I apologize. So let's do a drawback on a
- 0:27Sunday. Now this guy coming out of the
- 0:36draft in 2006, I actually thought he was going to be kind
- 0:47of like that, at least at that point.
- 0:50The next mode of you know, quarterbacks that we see
- 0:57nowadays in the NFL, you know, the dual direct quarterback that
- 1:02can make plays with his legs has a good to even great enough arm
- 1:09to where he can electrify the crowd at any given moment just
- 1:16for the sake of helping elevate a franchise.
- 1:23Now when I and I cannot forget to mention that along with him
- 1:30being a part of you know, the court banks that we normally
- 1:34talk about. Now we also have to bring into
- 1:37equation, you know, the O GS before him, the Randall
- 1:44Cunningham's, Steve Young's and the Michael Vick's obviously.
- 1:52But for this guy that I'm about to mention, it seemed like he
- 1:57had a brief glimpse of, you know, what he could have been
- 2:05had he just stayed on course as far as you know, improving his
- 2:09game of all. But then in the blink of an eye,
- 2:16it seemed as if everything instantly changed and he was no
- 2:26longer really a guy that was going to be a difference maker.
- 2:34So here's a Sunday drove back Events Young, an electrifying
- 2:42quarterback at Texas who amazed the world on the national stage
- 2:47in the national title game, only to not live up to what he could
- 2:56have been in the NFL. You know, when I was almost 11
- 3:11years old, even today, I've seen a lot of great college football
- 3:17games in my life, some of the best bowl games and even, let's
- 3:29just say for the sake of argument, even now as an adult,
- 3:35endings to natural title games that made me had to be on the
- 3:40edge of my seat. But if we're talking about from
- 3:46start to finish, one of the, you know, from start to finish the
- 3:50greatest college football game, bottom line, you would be hard
- 3:57pressed to not say that the 2006 Rose Bowl is right up there
- 4:05because at the time you had Texas and USC, no doubt the two
- 4:11best teams in all the nation. On one side you had USC, led by
- 4:20P Kell and back-to-back Heisman winners winning the forefront
- 4:26Matt Lyon, who won a year prior 2004.
- 4:30And of course, by that point, a guy in Reggie Bush who had, you
- 4:37can argue, has solidified himself as the most electrifying
- 4:43player in all football, even in the professionals.
- 4:49And of course, UFC was the consensus favorite before the
- 4:53season and even before the Rose Bowl in Pasadena to win the
- 5:00national tire once again. What they weren't prepared for,
- 5:08however, was this QB that I'm not going to lie to you, before
- 5:13the season, I never really paid any attention to and French
- 5:18Young who put Texas back in the national championship spotlight.
- 5:26And I'm going to be honest with you, going into the game, I
- 5:30thought, you know, like many people, I thought your seat
- 5:35based off on the talent and experience that they have from
- 5:39winning national championship a year prior.
- 5:44I thought they were going to take care of business against
- 5:46the Longhorns, but man, it was like every time Texas got the
- 5:53ball, I kept seeing #10 out there.
- 5:58And I kept seeing back and thinking, you know, as a soon to
- 6:02be 11 year old, who is this guy and why hadn't I not seen him
- 6:09very often up until that point? And I got to tell you, at that
- 6:18point, he won me over. Not only did the Longhorns upset
- 6:23the heavily favored Trojans, but it was like in a way fence Young
- 6:29overnight because of his spectacular performance, put
- 6:33himself on the map for the spring around April's draft.
- 6:41And I think a lot of people were enamored with his potential in
- 6:47what he could be at the next level.
- 6:52Now, mind you, the 2006 draft was around the 2006 draft, I
- 6:58apologize, was around the corner, everybody.
- 7:03And I, for me personally believe that draft was doing that, you
- 7:09know, decade one of the more underrated drafts.
- 7:13And then for this file, save that for another day.
- 7:18Tennessee had the third overall pick that year.
- 7:22And after training away franchise legend Steve Air
- 7:25McNair, rest in peace to my Ravens.
- 7:32The Titans want to go younger at the position and so they
- 7:37selected him. Finch young guys with the third
- 7:40overall pick with the hopes that he can usher in the new era in
- 7:46Nashville and everything started off promising.
- 7:53You know, fence Young was offensive rookie of the year.
- 7:58It seemed like game after game that particular season, he was
- 8:05leading the Titans to some of the most bizarre and you can
- 8:10argue remarkable comebacks at that point to where you would
- 8:14think, wow, did this guy continues to improve.
- 8:20You know his passing and you'll become more of an accurate
- 8:25quarterback. Sky's the limit for him.
- 8:32Here's where, however, things from Jump Street got off to a
- 8:40Rocky star, if you will. For whatever reason, Jeff
- 8:48Fisher, who was the Titans coach at that time, wasn't too keen on
- 8:56drafting Young or having Young be his quarterback.
- 9:03Because remember, he was Steve Mcnair's guy.
- 9:07You know, McNair was with the franchise when they were still
- 9:13the Houston Oilers in 1995. And then when the franchise
- 9:17moved to Tennessee full time in 1998, Ray named the Titans a
- 9:25year after that was this guy. You know, he really made Steve
- 9:32McNair in a lot of ways what we new in the BS record back in
- 9:38vice versa, McNair to Jeff Fisher again, blessing peace to
- 9:43my guy and McNair. But back-to-back seasons in 2004
- 9:48and 2005, Saul McNair, after sharing the MVP award with
- 9:54Peyton Manning, suffered season and the injuries both seasons in
- 9:59a row. The Titans, wanting to kind of
- 10:03replaced the quarterback position, felt it was time to
- 10:06move on from the franchise icon. And instantly after getting
- 10:11Finch Young that year in the draft, that's when things start
- 10:16to kind of spill over. First, let's start with Vince
- 10:22Young. This is always the case.
- 10:25You know, when you come out of the draft, there are questions
- 10:29about a lot of things. You know, particularly how smart
- 10:34you are, you know, in the film room, breaking down game tape
- 10:43and breaking down certain coverages.
- 10:46Many saw offense young with tremendous upside, but as a
- 10:50player who probably needed some work.
- 10:54I mean, let's just be real honest.
- 10:56If you're a quarterback coming out of college, you know you're
- 11:01not a finished product. I mean, let's just be real
- 11:04honest. Even some of the legends need a
- 11:07time to refine their game when they came out of, you know,
- 11:12where they came from as far as college.
- 11:15But you grow and you become a better quarterback as time goes
- 11:19on. But there were some red flags,
- 11:23you know, in Young's case. For starters, that Lundelik
- 11:28score that you probably heard of.
- 11:32He didn't apparently test all that well on it.
- 11:38He his score was less than a 10. And I just wanna be specific on
- 11:48that. If your score is less than A10
- 11:53and if you're a quarterback, that's an immediate red flag
- 11:59that I'll save that part for. At the moment.
- 12:04May felt that even at Texas, Young relied too much of his
- 12:10athletic ability to help him succeed.
- 12:13Not a bad thing when you're in college and you can actually get
- 12:16away with it. But when you get to the next
- 12:19level, arm strength, accuracy in the intellect matters a lot
- 12:27more. So there were some questions
- 12:29about that part of it as well. But many people thought inspire
- 12:36that the upside was there to where maybe if he learns to kind
- 12:42of grow into being a more refined Passover time and be
- 12:47able to break down certain things easily, he can't
- 12:50compensate anything. Now where things get murky
- 12:55between he and Fisher. Remember when I said earlier
- 13:01Fisher was not exactly keen or wanting Young to be his Corp?
- 13:08And it wouldn't be long even after that breakout rookie
- 13:11season where the two of them constantly clash with one
- 13:18another, one of the first signs of Young's, I guess you could
- 13:26say immaturely as a quarterback. Apparently he throughout his
- 13:32first 2-3 years in the NFL, he spent an exorbitant amount of
- 13:40money on. Get this Cheesecake Factory and
- 13:45no I am not joking. Go research that story of how he
- 13:50would spend almost up to 50,000 a week.
- 13:56Not you know, on a blue moon, just for like a reward or
- 14:01whatever. No, this would be nearly 50,000
- 14:05a week the guy would spend on Cheesecake Factory for not only
- 14:08himself, but for several people. And like most players in the NFL
- 14:17who had finally make it big and had kind of in a way establish
- 14:27themselves, you get a little full and you want to share the
- 14:31welfare value by Unfortunately, that's how many of them find
- 14:37themselves in financial trouble where on in life that part will
- 14:41get into soon enough. But as far as you know, on the
- 14:49field, even after Young's rookie season and even once again
- 14:56showing what he could be, it was clear that he and Fisher was
- 15:01never going to be meant to coexist.
- 15:07And not surprisingly, after Young's breakout rookie season,
- 15:17that's when everything started to fall apart.
- 15:21He never was really able to build off that great rookie
- 15:25season and he struggled at times with injuries, never really was
- 15:31able to work on his game overall as far as being more of a
- 15:35complete passer. And the next, you can really say
- 15:42parts of five years he was in Tennessee was really up and down
- 15:46for him. Along with missing time through
- 15:50the injury, The Titans in 2008 actually won 13 games.
- 15:57But remember, Carrie Collins, who they got from free agency
- 16:03started the bulk of those games that year.
- 16:06And the offense you from 2008, 2009 was mostly centered around
- 16:12Chris Johnson, CJ2K especially that year in 2009.
- 16:18And as an aside, with him definitely sending players
- 16:23'cause he's barely ALS you know in my thoughts CJ2K.
- 16:30But as far as Vince Young was concerned, it was more than fair
- 16:33to say that he was never really able to reestablish himself in
- 16:39Tennessee. He and Fisher constantly clash
- 16:43with one another and even in the media.
- 16:49His play started to deteriorate over the next couple of seasons
- 16:54with the team and it wouldn't be long before the long time Titans
- 17:02coach and their once promising quarterback that was supposed to
- 17:08be the future were both gone. Now, Fisher went on to coach
- 17:15with the Rams when they were in Saint Louis sliced away.
- 17:22But here's with Vince Young's career that looked to be
- 17:25promising at one point now, who was able to fully get back off
- 17:31the ground after history disease in 2011 when he joined
- 17:41Philadelphia, If you remember, they were supposed to be that.
- 17:47And and this is actually laughable, you know, now,
- 17:51considering how far that franchise has come since that
- 17:55year when, you know, 2 Super Bowls after that.
- 18:01But that Dream Team in 2011? And if you're an Eagle fan, you
- 18:05remember exactly what I'm talking about.
- 18:10Yeah, Long story short, that Dream Team was a nightmare.
- 18:19I'll just leave it at that. Young was never really able to
- 18:26stick around not much longer after that scenario panned out,
- 18:32although he tried, you know, to rest elect his career for a
- 18:37couple of teams. It was as good as the guy, as
- 18:43far as you know, either being on the roster for training camp and
- 18:47or preseason. Buffalo, Cleveland, and I
- 18:52believe Green Bay was in the cards at one point.
- 18:54If I'm forgetting one, I apologize.
- 18:58But he was never really able to reinsure himself, as you know,
- 19:03the guy that showed what he could have been in his rookie
- 19:08season. And before you know it, the once
- 19:12hyped prospect from Texas who amazed everyone in the Rose Bowl
- 19:19just a couple years prior was out in the NFL.
- 19:26But that was really only just the beginning or just the tip of
- 19:32the iceberg, as they say. As far as you know, how things
- 19:37completely unraveled. As I mentioned earlier, like
- 19:41most promising players who made it big to the NFL, it didn't
- 19:48take long for the financial bug to get too young.
- 19:54Remember earlier when I had talked about him spending all
- 19:57that exorbitant money on The Cheesecake Factory?
- 20:03Yeah, so he tried his hand. That other kind of things,
- 20:08spending unnecessary money on, you know.
- 20:13Materialistic things that make absolutely no sense, bad
- 20:17investments. And yeah, and again, that's
- 20:22technically not uncommon for, you know, NFL players to go
- 20:28completely, you know, broke a couple years out of the league.
- 20:39And Young, unfortunately, was no exception to that, but it was
- 20:46the off the field, you know, stuff after he was done playing
- 20:51that I'm not going to say was a surprise, but it's like from a
- 20:57distance. Wow.
- 21:03And if you saw that documentary that I believe it's on Netflix,
- 21:07you can kind of see how he looks now as opposed to what he was
- 21:13when he came out of college. He's had several run insurance,
- 21:18you know, with DYDWI and after at one point working for his all
- 21:28monitor as far as doing game day telecast, it just seems as if, I
- 21:36don't know. He just never was.
- 21:38He has been able to get himself back in order.
- 21:43And, you know, I think the unfortunate thing was it was
- 21:51like he never was able, in my estimation, to fully, you know,
- 21:58mature not just, you know, as a football player, but as a human.
- 22:05Because remember when I said that he had clashed with Fisher,
- 22:10You know, at times in Tennessee, he tried to reach out to Fisher
- 22:19one day to try to make amends for what happened down there in
- 22:23Tennessee. Apparently, Young misspelled his
- 22:28name. And do I think that's that big
- 22:34of a deal? Maybe it may not in the kind of
- 22:41an ideal sense, but it's one of those things where you have to
- 22:48kind of look at and say, did he really do that on purpose or was
- 22:53there some labeling feelings from what happened years earlier
- 23:00between the two that I don't think Young ever learned from?
- 23:07It's hard to say. I mean, again, you have to watch
- 23:09the documentary on finishing for that Regardless, you know, you
- 23:18want to wish a guy well and you want to be able to hope that he
- 23:23can get himself hopefully back on the right track.
- 23:29But as far as, you know, football wise, I thought he was
- 23:33going to be great. I thought he was going to be, as
- 23:36I mentioned, you know, from the old fellow names of the past,
- 23:44the Randall Cunningham, Steve Young's and Michael Vick's to
- 23:47even the guys we see today to Josh Allen's, Lamar Jackson's,
- 23:52Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts. I thought Young was going to be
- 23:57in that fame. I thought his talent warned him
- 24:03to be in those kinds of conversations.
- 24:06OK, I thought he was going to be somewhere in that mold, if you
- 24:13will. But unfortunately, and this is
- 24:19just the case of how 1 Noble performance put someone on the
- 24:31spotlight that they probably would not prepare for because it
- 24:37was like, in a way that national title performance against UFC
- 24:42put Vince Young, you know, on the spotlight immediately.
- 24:49But then came the high level of expectations that I don't think
- 24:53he ever was able to fully live up to.
- 24:59And that's not, like I said, uncommon for something like that
- 25:02to be a case. I mean, I've seen, and not just
- 25:06in football but in all sports mostly you can say basketball or
- 25:11hockey where a guy that comes in has like a noble ear season or
- 25:20performance that you look back on.
- 25:22You say, wow, he could have the potential would be great.
- 25:27But then in one fell swoop, the level expectation gets raised,
- 25:33the pressure amounts, you know, money certainly will play a part
- 25:40in it. But then when all those things
- 25:43happen, then everything comes in full circle to where he will
- 25:50never be able to live up to what he was supposed to be.
- 25:57And Vince Young, you know, fell into that category or really
- 26:05that kind of manga almost immediately that he was never
- 26:09really going to be able to live up to what he could have been.
- 26:16Yes, certainly playing for a coach who wasn't a fan of his
- 26:19didn't help. But the lack of maturity, only
- 26:26really having one great season and just being injured at times
- 26:33hindered what he could have been long term for his career.
- 26:38And that is the bottom line. So the next time you see kind of
- 26:42like your normal season or performance, what have you that
- 26:47elevates an athlete you know overnight, don't buy into hype.
- 26:58Let them see how they can be over a long period of time,
- 27:03because more often than not they are more destined to fail than I
- 27:08think most people realize.
