- 0:05If you've ever tossed around the idea of starting
- 0:07a podcast and wondered if it could actually change
- 0:10your life. I'm here to tell you it's totally
- 0:13possible. Hey, it's Abby, the podcast lady, back
- 0:16for another episode. I'm really excited to explore
- 0:18the topic today of how podcasting can change
- 0:21your life because it has completely changed mine
- 0:25for the better. Typically, the first Thursday
- 0:27of the month on Abby, the podcast lady, we do
- 0:29a case study episode. We break down a different
- 0:32podcast, talk about what they're doing well and
- 0:34what you can apply to your own show to make it
- 0:37better, that sort of thing. I'm going to be honest
- 0:39with you. This is a little real life peek behind.
- 0:41behind the curtain. My house got rocked by whatever
- 0:44crud is going around, and I did not have time
- 0:47to put together a case study episode. But this
- 0:50week, when I was down and out with whatever illness
- 0:53is going around, I came across the fact that
- 0:55it was National Podcast Day on September 30th.
- 0:59And I'm like, gosh, that's so cool. I didn't
- 1:01realize there was a national podcast day. And
- 1:04it got me really reflecting on how podcasting
- 1:07has changed my life. And I wanted to share the
- 1:09story of how that happened. Because I think a
- 1:13lot of people start a podcast wanting it to change
- 1:16their life. And they don't exactly see the roadmap
- 1:19laid out in front of them. And I don't think
- 1:22there necessarily is one clear cut way for a
- 1:24podcast to change your life. But Looking back
- 1:27on my own story, I know there's a lot of little
- 1:29things that led up to a lot of really big things
- 1:31that happened to make my life. completely different
- 1:35from what it was even a few years ago before
- 1:37I started podcasting. So I just kind of wanted
- 1:40to share my story and you might find some similarities
- 1:42with your own story or might see something in
- 1:45there that you could apply to your own story.
- 1:47So let's start at the very beginning. How did
- 1:50I get started in podcasting? I was a radio DJ.
- 1:53I actually went to college to be a radio DJ.
- 1:56Yes, that is a real thing. I am a graduate of
- 1:58Brown College of Radio Broadcasting in Mendota
- 2:01Heights, Minnesota. Associates of Applied Science
- 2:04in Radio Broadcasting. It sounds like a crazy
- 2:08degree, kind of because it was a crazy degree.
- 2:10The school doesn't even exist anymore. But I
- 2:12was a radio DJ. My passion has always been talking
- 2:15into a microphone and running a soundboard. That's
- 2:18all I ever wanted to do. I had no other career
- 2:21goals in life. This was it. And so I was a radio
- 2:24DJ. I worked in Minneapolis. I worked in the
- 2:26St. Cloud market. And I really fell in love with
- 2:30the St. Cloud area. This is where I've been the
- 2:32longest amount of time. And I didn't really want
- 2:34to move. And to move up in my career would have
- 2:37required totally uprooting my life and moving
- 2:40somewhere else. And so when the time came to
- 2:42take the next step for my career, I actually
- 2:44ended up leaving the radio industry. But that
- 2:47gave me an opportunity to start my own podcast.
- 2:50I had a passion project at the time called this.
- 2:52Small Town Tourist. And it initially started
- 2:55as a blog showcasing some unique things happening
- 2:58in small towns around central Minnesota and the
- 3:01state as a whole and even some places kind of
- 3:04across the country. And so I turned that blog
- 3:06into a podcast and I loved making the Small Town
- 3:10Tourist. It was so much fun. And I met some really
- 3:13great people. I had some awesome guests on and
- 3:16it really taught me the ropes of how to make
- 3:19a podcast because it was something that I had
- 3:21no experience. I had plenty of experience creating
- 3:24audio content and online content from my radio
- 3:28industry knowledge and experience, but I didn't
- 3:31know how to make a podcast. So I kind of really
- 3:33taught myself by making The Small Town Tourist.
- 3:37And then it just kind of snowballed from there.
- 3:41So from the Small Town Tourist, I actually got
- 3:43my very first podcast client. I had Liz Fidler
- 3:48-Murgan, at the time just Liz Fidler, from Sunny
- 3:50Mary Meadow Flower Farm on my podcast to tell
- 3:53her farm story because she had this really unique
- 3:55business model that was happening in St. Joseph,
- 3:59Minnesota. So I had her on to share her farm
- 4:01story and we killed the microphones at the end
- 4:04of the recording and we just kind of sat there
- 4:05for a beat and we looked at each other and she
- 4:08said, so I should start a podcast. And I said,
- 4:12yes, you should start a podcast and I will help
- 4:15you start a podcast. Because by that time, I
- 4:18had figured out how to get my podcast on places
- 4:21like Spotify and onto YouTube and all the other
- 4:25places. And I'm like, I know how to do this so
- 4:27I can help you create your podcast so you can
- 4:31reach your target audience. And so we sat down
- 4:35and We would record at her kitchen table while
- 4:38her kids were running around. And we really were
- 4:41scrappy with it in the beginning. I had very
- 4:43rudimentary podcast equipment. I had my Zoom
- 4:47PodTrack P4 and a couple of microphones. It was
- 4:50very scrappy in the beginning, but we made it
- 4:54work. And I got to help her launch her podcast
- 4:57because of what I had taught myself in the process
- 5:00of making my own podcast. And it was so cool.
- 5:03And we really... amassed some major downloads
- 5:06unexpectedly in the first few months of her show
- 5:09and it was really fun and from there it kind
- 5:12of snowballed into a friend of Liz's ended up
- 5:16saying, well, how are you making your podcast?
- 5:18And she would say, well, Abby is helping me make
- 5:22my podcast because I don't have any desire to
- 5:24learn how to edit the audio, how to make the
- 5:26video, how to make the social media. I don't
- 5:29want to know how to do any of that. So I just
- 5:30put it in Abby's hands and she takes care of
- 5:33it because she knows how to do it. And so that
- 5:36referral then led to another client and then
- 5:39it led to another client. And it just this word
- 5:41of mouth of, hey, Abby, the podcast lady, she
- 5:44can help me make my show. why don't you ask her
- 5:46to help her? And it just totally turned into
- 5:49this full blown business that I was running from
- 5:53the common term now is your five to nine after
- 5:56your nine to five. So I was working a full blown
- 5:598am to 4 .30pm job and then going home and producing
- 6:03podcasts until late at night. And it just kind
- 6:07of evolved into this. full -blown podcast production
- 6:11business that I did not see coming. And it happened
- 6:14within a year of me even launching my own show.
- 6:17It was absolutely insane. It totally changed
- 6:20my life. I ended up going on vacation with some
- 6:24friends to Galveston, Texas. Me and my best friends
- 6:27from high school were like, you know this is
- 6:29kind of the time if we want to do one big friend
- 6:30trip before life gets really serious for all
- 6:33of us this is time to do it we found an airbnb
- 6:35in galveston and i remember us being at this
- 6:38airbnb having a wonderful time but i was still
- 6:41trying to crank out podcasts because i was still
- 6:43working my full -time job i was about a year
- 6:46and a few months into my podcast production business
- 6:50and i'm like I think it's time to take the leap.
- 6:53I think I need to go full time in the podcasting
- 6:56industry. And I remember sitting there. editing
- 6:59early in the morning before we had our full day
- 7:02of fun in Galveston. And I'm like, you know what,
- 7:04I'm going to do it. And so I sat down and I made
- 7:06a plan when we got home from Galveston. And I
- 7:09put in my notice at the entity I was working
- 7:13for. And I said, Hey, I'll give you guys a month.
- 7:15But at the end of this month, I'm going full
- 7:17time on my own business, I got to see what this
- 7:19could possibly turn into. Because I just had
- 7:22such a fire in my heart for making audio content
- 7:26and video content and helping people share their
- 7:29stories. I just needed to see what could happen
- 7:32if I took that leap. And if you're actually watching
- 7:34the video version of this podcast, I have Glen
- 7:37Campbell's Galveston vinyl in my studio because
- 7:42of that trip to Galveston and the decision that
- 7:45I made when I was there. It was just such a pivotal
- 7:47moment for me that I knew. This is what I wanted
- 7:50to do with my life. I have to take the leap.
- 7:52I have to see what podcasting can do for me and
- 7:55my life and my family. So I took that leap. June
- 7:581st of 2024, I went full time in podcasting.
- 8:04I have been running a podcast production business
- 8:06now for a few years, and it's just been... absolutely
- 8:09insane what has come from it. I have worked with
- 8:13clients all across Minnesota. I have a client
- 8:16that I've worked with in South Dakota since almost
- 8:19day one. Shout out Amanda Radke in the heart
- 8:21of rural America. I have a wonderful client in
- 8:24Knoxville, Tennessee. I've worked with people
- 8:26in Texas. I have worked with cattle ranchers
- 8:29in Melbourne, Australia, even just because of
- 8:33the word of mouth of, hey, this is Abby. She's
- 8:36the podcast lady. She can help me make my show.
- 8:39and make it sound really professional and make
- 8:41some really great promotional content for it.
- 8:43And it just takes that burden off their shoulders.
- 8:46And I am so grateful for all the amazing connections
- 8:50that have come from making a podcast. It all
- 8:53started with me just starting my own show and
- 8:55trying to figure this out as I went. And it's
- 8:58just snowballed into this beautiful, wonderful
- 9:00thing where now I'm sitting in a podcast studio
- 9:04in downtown St. Cloud that I rent every single
- 9:07month and I help make some. really great content
- 9:09for local people here in this space. I'm speechless
- 9:12because I wake up every morning knowing that
- 9:16I get to do something that I absolutely love.
- 9:18I am paying my bills by helping people do what
- 9:23I love. And it's just incredible. I absolutely
- 9:26love being a podcaster. I love making podcasts.
- 9:30This is what lights a fire inside of me. every
- 9:33single day. And I had another really pivotal
- 9:36moment happen this week. It was actually, was
- 9:40it International Podcast Day? Maybe it was the
- 9:43day before. But I got selected to be a speaker
- 9:46at Podfest. 2026 and i am beyond excited for
- 9:51this i went to podfest last year or no this year
- 9:542025 it's still 2025 i went to podfest in orlando
- 9:58florida for the first time in january of 2025
- 10:01and it was a life -changing experience did you
- 10:05know that there's an entire conference dedicated
- 10:07to podcasters there was like thousands of podcasters
- 10:11And we all gathered for a long weekend of learning
- 10:15from each other and speakers and motivational
- 10:18content and just getting to be so inside this
- 10:23industry that we all love. And it was absolutely
- 10:25incredible. One of my clients, Liz, who I mentioned
- 10:28before, she actually got a book deal from going
- 10:30to Podfest. How insane is that? By the time we
- 10:34go to Podfest this coming year, she's going to
- 10:36have her book ready for pre -order, which...
- 10:39how incredible like podcasting can change your
- 10:41life in such big ways and i am i sound like i'm
- 10:46choked up i am a little choked up but i'm also
- 10:48still a little sick but it's just insane how
- 10:52taking a leap of faith starting a podcast not
- 10:55necessarily knowing what will come of it having
- 10:57no expectations it can totally change everything
- 11:00about how you operate day to day i wake up every
- 11:03day and get to make some really amazing content
- 11:06hear amazing stories meet new people I am so
- 11:09beyond blessed with what this industry has provided
- 11:12for me. And it's not from like, oh my gosh, I
- 11:16got a meat undies deal and I am hawking fresh
- 11:21pet for someone and making millions of dollars
- 11:23in ad revenue. But instead, it's changed my life
- 11:26in a way where. i get to add real value to people's
- 11:29lives which in turn adds real value to my life
- 11:32and it's just an incredible industry and i think
- 11:36everyone should have a podcast and not necessarily
- 11:38set super high expectations but just kind of
- 11:41start it and see where it can take you because
- 11:42i think it can take people down so many different
- 11:45roads and you can meet so many new people i just
- 11:48am such a believer in the podcasting industry
- 11:51being a life changer and i can only hope that
- 11:55it will change your life just as much as it's
- 11:57changed mine just by hitting record so kind of
- 11:59a sappy episode today but i thought it was important
- 12:03to share this story and sorry there's no case
- 12:06study today if you're hoping for a case study
- 12:08Maybe I'll throw in a bonus episode this month.
- 12:10But I just really wanted to share how podcasting
- 12:13has changed my life and celebrate International
- 12:16Podcasting Day. Or is it National Podcasting
- 12:18Day? It's one of the two. Happy Podcasting Day.
- 12:21Thanks for listening to Abby the Podcast Lady.
