- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. My name is Tracie
- 0:03and I'm going to be your host today and we are
- 0:05going to be talking about what we're going to
- 0:07call twin fruits. kindness and goodness the fruits
- 0:10that change everything and so welcome back if
- 0:13you are not a regular listener welcome to fostering
- 0:16faith we are here to walk with you on your faith
- 0:18journey and if you are continued follow -up guests
- 0:21we welcome you and we hope that your week is
- 0:24going great and so let's get real honest and
- 0:27get to the root of what we're talking about today
- 0:30and We're gonna be talking about the two fruits
- 0:34of the spirit that absolutely walk hand -in -hand
- 0:37Which is kindness and goodness and so if you've
- 0:39not listened to the last couple of episodes We
- 0:41are walking through each fruit of the spirit.
- 0:44And so now listen these are just not Quote -unquote
- 0:50be nice Christian rules. These aren't Don't be
- 0:54rude or smile at your strangers kind of vibes
- 0:58These are Holy Spirit fruits that show up when
- 1:02God actually gets down into the soil of your
- 1:05heart and starts rearranging things. Kindness
- 1:09and goodness are not just random personal traits.
- 1:13They are evidence. They're receipts. Proof of
- 1:16the Holy Spirit is alive and active in your life.
- 1:19And so walk with me because today we're going
- 1:21to be diving deep, learning, hopefully letting
- 1:24the Holy Spirit tap on a few areas. Where we
- 1:27can all grow and so let's dive into it. And so
- 1:30what is the fruit of the spirit really and so
- 1:34Galatians 5 22 through 23 says But let what the
- 1:38fruit of the spirit is love joy peace patience
- 1:42kindness goodness faithfulness gentleness and
- 1:46self -control Notice something paul doesn't say
- 1:50the fruits of the spirit are he says fruit singularly.
- 1:58And so, but the fruit of the spirit is love,
- 2:02joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
- 2:08gentleness, and self -control. Meaning, you don't
- 2:12get to pick and choose which ones you're naturally
- 2:16good at. It isn't like a spiritual buffet. This
- 2:20is one fruit with nine flavors. If the whole,
- 2:24if the spirit is working in you, you get all
- 2:27nine and they begin to grow. And today we're
- 2:30going to be looking at the two that get overlooked
- 2:32but I think are absolutely essential for everyone
- 2:35who wants to be more spiritually mature. And
- 2:40so let's break it down. And so let's get back
- 2:43to the words. like adults in Bible class. And
- 2:47so if not, let's I love learning new things.
- 2:50And so if we can talk like we were at a coffee
- 2:53table, because that's what fostering faith is.
- 2:56It's just us not walking through seminary, but
- 2:59it's about us learning, you know, life together.
- 3:02And so I promise that what we're going to talk
- 3:07about is easy to understand. And so kindness.
- 3:10And so what is it? What does that word mean?
- 3:14And so it's compassion that moves. It's not a
- 3:17vibe. It's not a feeling. It's not, oh, you poor
- 3:21thing. It means your heart bends towards people
- 3:26instead of away from them. It's mercy in action.
- 3:30It's gentleness in motion. It's emotionally awareness
- 3:35of what's shaped by the Holy Spirit. And we have
- 3:39goodness. This is not, quote, be a good person.
- 3:45This word means moral courage, integrity, spiritual
- 3:50backbone, the willingness to do what is right,
- 3:53even when it's uncomfortable, unpopular, or requests
- 3:59and makes you sacrifice. And so here's what it
- 4:05is. Kindness equals a soft heart. and goodness
- 4:08is a strong spine. One blesses, one protects,
- 4:14one comforts, and one confronts. So if we put
- 4:18them together, that's where you are looking at
- 4:22Jesus. Not religious, not fake, not forced. Real,
- 4:28compassionate, strong, righteous, and loving.
- 4:35Kindness that looks like Jesus and so let's talk
- 4:37about the kindness actually looks like and so
- 4:39because kindness isn't don't yell at people Kindness
- 4:44isn't I held the door open Kindness is Jesus
- 4:48seeing people when no one else did Jesus and
- 4:52the woman that caught in adultery He didn't shame
- 4:55her. He didn't expose her He defended her dignity
- 5:00and he lifted her up and if you don't know the
- 5:04story this woman was caught in adultery and so
- 5:06she was dragged out in front of everybody and
- 5:09by that common law, they were going to stone
- 5:11her. And so he was like, for any of you people,
- 5:15and he started writing in things in the sand
- 5:18and no one really knows what he was writing in
- 5:21the sand, whether the people that were around
- 5:23her, whether he was writing his their sins in
- 5:25the sand or their names or what they did or whatever,
- 5:29no one really knows. But we just know that he
- 5:30was writing something in the sand. And then he
- 5:35says, for those who have not sinned, throw the
- 5:38first stone. And everybody walked away. Because
- 5:42none of us are perfect. We are all the same messed
- 5:46up people that he chose to die for. And so the
- 5:49woman that was called to an adultery is no different
- 5:54than what you have done or what I have done.
- 5:56A sin is a sin. And so you have Jesus and Zacchaeus.
- 6:01Everyone hated. This dude, everyone hated his
- 6:04ex, he is... And Jesus said, I'm coming to your
- 6:09house. That's kindness. Jesus feeding 5 ,000.
- 6:15He saw their hunger. He saw their need. And scripture
- 6:19says he had compassion on them. Kindness is love
- 6:24with legs. It moves. It sees. It steps into someone's
- 6:31moment and brings the heart of God with them.
- 6:35Kindness is not weakness. Kindness is Christ
- 6:38-like. And we're talking about this in class
- 6:41last week. And so it's about having faith with
- 6:44action. And so we can know all of these sayings.
- 6:46But if people are not seeing these sayings, our
- 6:49faith in action, our faith in what we are reading
- 6:51in Scripture, and we're not living this stuff
- 6:53out, then what is the point? There is no point
- 6:57in you sitting in hours and hours and hours and
- 6:59reading scripture and memorizing it if you're
- 7:01not going to act it out. If people can't see
- 7:04your fruit, then how do we know what you're growing?
- 7:07What tree are you coming from? And so it's just
- 7:11so important that we are living out what scripture
- 7:14says, that we are kind like Christ is. Now, are
- 7:18we going to be perfect? No, we are human. And
- 7:21there was only one guy that was perfect. And
- 7:26he's the guy that died for us. He's the guy that
- 7:29says, I'm going to take all of this and I'm going
- 7:31to die for you. And so you could have eternal
- 7:33life. That's the guy that we're trying to measure
- 7:36up to and we're going to miss the mark because
- 7:38he was perfect and we are not. But he gives us
- 7:41scripture. He gives us the Holy Spirit to be
- 7:44more like him. And so we move on to goodness,
- 7:50the spiritual backbone. And so now goodness is
- 7:53this Christians don't talk enough about goodness
- 7:59isn't be a good girl Goodness isn't don't get
- 8:03in trouble Goodness is create courageous righteousness
- 8:08Joseph Resisted potters wife not because he was
- 8:14scared because but because he valued God's standards
- 8:19Daniel prayed with the windows open even if it
- 8:24would have cost him his life. Jesus cleansed
- 8:29the temple, kindness held babies, and goodness
- 8:34flipped tables. Goodness is strength and integrity
- 8:39that refuses to bend or bow to sin, culture,
- 8:44pressure, or convenience. Goodness says, I love
- 8:49you enough to tell you the truth. I love God
- 8:52enough to obey him even when I don't feel like
- 8:55it. I call, I love my calling enough to keep
- 9:00my character clean. Goodness is a holy backbone.
- 9:07And so how do they work together? And so this
- 9:10is where it gets beautiful because kindness without
- 9:12goodness becomes compromise and goodness without
- 9:15kindness becomes cruelty. So we need both. Kindness
- 9:20says, come here. Goodness says, let's grow. Kindness
- 9:25says, you're loved. While goodness says, let's
- 9:29walk in truth. Kindness is how Jesus touched
- 9:32the leper. Goodness is how Jesus confronted the
- 9:37Pharisees. A believer with kindness and goodness
- 9:44becomes gentle enough to restore, strong enough
- 9:50to confront, compassionate enough to care, and
- 9:55courageous enough to stand. And that's spiritual
- 10:00eternity. This is Christ -likeness. And so let's
- 10:06make it practical. You know I'm not gonna leave
- 10:08you with something theological and no real -life
- 10:12steps to take. And so here's kindness on a Tuesday.
- 10:18encouraging that co -worker that everyone else
- 10:21avoids, choosing tone instead of tension, letting
- 10:26an offense die instead of feeding it, asking,
- 10:33how can I pray for you? But actually doing it,
- 10:38it drives me and say, oh, I'll pray for you.
- 10:41If you say you're literally gonna take their
- 10:44request to God, please do it. Don't do the, you
- 10:49know, Christian -ese or fake whatever. Don't
- 10:52be a faker. Actual be a follower. If you tell
- 10:54someone that you're going to pray for them, do
- 10:57it. Mean it. Listening without planning your
- 11:02response. These are things that you could do
- 11:06every day to show that kindness that He has shown
- 11:09to us. And here's what goodness could look like
- 11:13in real life. Walking away from Gospel. Keeping
- 11:17your character stable when emotions are unstable.
- 11:21Saying, I can't be a part of that. Standing for
- 11:27the truth with humility and not pride. Raising
- 11:31your kids to love Jesus more than they love culture.
- 11:36And I know that Gia could just puke. As many
- 11:39often times that I have said, is that kingdom
- 11:43standards? Is that heaven standards? Or is that
- 11:45earthly standards? Because we don't want to settle
- 11:48for where we don't belong. We don't belong here
- 11:51We are citizens of heaven if you have chosen
- 11:54Jesus as your Lord and Savior. We are citizens
- 11:56of heaven We are not citizens here on earth.
- 11:59We are just here for a vapor of time and we get
- 12:01to spend eternity at home and So kindness is
- 12:06empathy Goodness is integrity if you are the
- 12:11same Monday Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,
- 12:15Saturday, Sunday And I don't get a different
- 12:18version of you at the office that I do with you
- 12:22at church, that I do with you on the court. Integrity.
- 12:26Be that same kind of person. Both are fruit.
- 12:30Both are supernatural. And both require Jesus.
- 12:37And so why does this matter today? Why are we
- 12:39talking about fruit and the spirit? Why does
- 12:42it even matter what the Bible says? And let's
- 12:44be real, we live in a world that is snappy, offended,
- 12:48sarcastic, impatient, self -centered, and loud.
- 12:52Everybody is mad, everybody is tired, and everybody
- 12:55is reacting. But the Holy Spirit is rising up
- 12:58a generation that doesn't bend in with that noise.
- 13:02We rise above it. And if I can say anything about
- 13:05the youth that... They are so on fire for Christ
- 13:09and it is a generation that I really feel like
- 13:12there's just going to be a huge move with a faith
- 13:17and everything like that. And so we are not called
- 13:20to be louder. We are called to be brighter. You
- 13:25are the shine in someone's darkness and you can
- 13:31shine brighter when you walk in kindness that
- 13:35heals. character that stands, and compassion
- 13:39that reaches, and courage that obeys. These two
- 13:43fruits show the world God more clearly than a
- 13:47sermon will ever preach. Your life is a sermon.
- 13:51The way that you live and you call yourself a
- 13:54Christian and that you follow Christ, you are
- 13:57a walking billboard for God. And so it really
- 14:02is just so important. that we look at how kindness
- 14:07is intentional mercy, that God isn't wasn't kind
- 14:11because he avoided conflict. He was kind because
- 14:14his heart was full of compassion. You know, we
- 14:17had the lady at the well, we had Zacchaeus, we
- 14:19had the woman that had adultery. He fed the 5
- 14:24,000. Kindness isn't about being polite. Kindness
- 14:27is see a need and move. I think there's a movie
- 14:31like robots, see a need, feel a need. And kindness
- 14:34is spiritual awareness. Kindness is emotional
- 14:37intelligence formed by the Holy Spirit. Kindness
- 14:39is choosing mercy when irritation would be a
- 14:43lot easier. If patience says, hold still, kindness
- 14:48says, reach out. And goodness doesn't mean that
- 14:53you're a people pleaser. It means that you're
- 14:55morally anchored. Goodness... is when Joseph
- 14:58walked and refused to do anything with Potiphar's
- 15:01wife. Goodness is whenever Daniel stood and prayed
- 15:04in front of the window and said, I don't care
- 15:05who sees me worshiping my God. Kindness says
- 15:09I care about you and goodness says I care enough
- 15:12about you to not watch you self -destruct. And
- 15:17working them together is so important. It's about
- 15:20being gentle, but firm. It's about being comforting,
- 15:24but yet correcting. So it's really about putting
- 15:28them all together and looking at how we can be
- 15:33a fruit of the spirit and letting our Vine be
- 15:38connected to God and so we can grow and we can
- 15:41mature and you can't fake fruit You can't manufacture
- 15:44it. You can't try harder to be kind or good The
- 15:47fruit grows whenever you stay in the word whenever
- 15:50you pray whatever you are obedient to whatever
- 15:53he says and that you stay fully surrendered and
- 15:57staying connected to God. The branch doesn't
- 16:00try to produce fruit. It just stays connected
- 16:04to the vine. And whenever you're connected to
- 16:07Him, God will produce that fruit. And so we hope
- 16:12that you guys enjoyed this episode. We hope that
- 16:15this is bringing you encouragement and knowledge
- 16:17and wisdom and that it makes you so interested.
- 16:20And I hope that this makes you thirsty to go
- 16:23read Galatians and to pray about it and asking
- 16:25him, hey, what are my fruits that are kind of
- 16:27withered? What fruits need to grow? What can
- 16:30I do to be better? And so we would love to pray
- 16:35for you guys. And so dear Heavenly Father, thank
- 16:37you so much for today. Thank you so much for
- 16:38yesterday. Lord, I pray that we grow in kindness.
- 16:42I pray that you grow kindness in us, real kindness,
- 16:45Jesus -like kindness, kindness that sees people,
- 16:47that reaches people, that blesses people, the
- 16:50goodness in us to give us strength and courage
- 16:54and purity and conviction and the ability to
- 16:57stand when no one else does. Make us more like
- 16:59you. Let us live our lives as a reflection of
- 17:02your heart. I pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
- 17:07All right, friends, and we are so excited to
- 17:09continue to walk in kindness this week. Go walk
- 17:12in goodness this week and show the world what
- 17:15happens when the Holy Spirit actually takes a
- 17:19hold of your character. And we hope that this
- 17:22message encouraged you. If you know someone that's
- 17:25struggling, send it to them. Show up every week
- 17:28for these episodes. Like it, make a comment.
- 17:32And we hope that this Helps foster your faith
- 17:36until next time stay rooted stay surrendered
- 17:39and stay on fire fire. We love you guys. Bye
