- 0:00Cheryl New: when you have online input mm-hmm.
- 0:03Cheryl New: There's no nuance in it.
- 0:05Cheryl New: there's no human connection.
- 0:08Speaker: In parenting, some voices rush us, some distract us, and a few genuinely help us to grow.
- 0:18Speaker: Today we're taking a moment to look at the difference, to slow things down just enough.
- 0:24Speaker: To notice the voices that bring clarity instead of pressure, and help us to stay grounded in what matters.
- 0:34Speaker: I'm Cheryl Lange and you're listening to The Parenting Podcast.
- 0:38Speaker: I'm so glad you're here.
- 0:49Cheryl New: All right, Christie, so this is a follow up from,, our episode last time we were processing a question that you had gotten from a young mom mm-hmm.
- 0:59Cheryl New: That you're with.
- 1:00Cheryl New: So remind us of what the question is and then let's proceed.
- 1:04Christie: Yeah.
- 1:04Christie: I think just the, talking about the overwhelm of all the information that's out there versus, um, age old wisdom from, you know, mom passed to mom passed to mom over the years.
- 1:16Christie: Yeah.
- 1:16Christie: And the challenges that young moms face.
- 1:19Christie: Currently with, you know, the internet brings us so much insight on so many things, but it can also be very overwhelming with all the, information overload.
- 1:28Cheryl New: Yes.
- 1:29Cheryl New: And we had such compassion and what she said is accurate.
- 1:32Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 1:33Cheryl New: We hear it a lot of times from a lot of moms.
- 1:350: Mm-hmm.
- 1:36Cheryl New: So what we did is.
- 1:38Cheryl New: Typically we talked about the struggle.
- 1:40Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 1:40Cheryl New: And there's a lot of struggle there and, but we never want to stay there.
- 1:44Cheryl New: So this time let's look at, so what will we do with that?
- 1:48Cheryl New: What encouragement will we offer to that young mom?
- 1:51Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 1:52Cheryl New: And anybody saying, so this is the reality of my situation.
- 1:55Cheryl New: I don't have two grandmothers and a mother-in-law and three older cousins and an aunt all speaking into my life, right.
- 2:04Cheryl New: But I have chats sitting.
- 2:05Cheryl New: We are here.
- 2:06Cheryl New: Right.
- 2:06Cheryl New: And I have, I have TikTok, And it feels so easy.
- 2:09Cheryl New: It feels easy.
- 2:09Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 2:10Cheryl New: So what are some suggestions
- 2:13Cheryl A: to speak into this?
- 2:14Christie: So what do we do?
- 2:15Christie: Yeah.
- 2:17Christie: Well, I mean, good question for one, yes.
- 2:19Christie: It's, we're all still, you know, asking ourselves, but I just think about, um, what we were saying last time about, you know, yes.
- 2:29Christie: When we look back at past generations, there were a lot of things that past generations maybe got wrong, and we have evolved and learned and grown in a lot of ways.
- 2:39Christie: To know better on so many different topics, but there is just age old wisdom of raising kids.
- 2:46Christie: Yeah.
- 2:46Christie: And there's so much that could be solved by just not trying to reinvent the wheel and doing things the way that maybe your parents did or grandparents did, or someone you know that's already gone ahead of you.
- 3:00Christie: Maybe their kids are 10 years older than you.
- 3:02Christie: And so I just think.
- 3:05Christie: That the more digital our world has become, the less interactive with human beings.
- 3:11Christie: Absolutely.
- 3:11Christie: We've become Absolutely.
- 3:12Christie: For sure.
- 3:12Christie: And I think that there's real value there to revisit.
- 3:16Christie: I mean, it's how I raised my kids before we had all of these things.
- 3:20Christie: Yeah.
- 3:20Christie: And I'm so grateful for that.
- 3:23Christie: And I just, as you know, my daughter's got a baby and I'm just encouraging any young people I know.
- 3:29Christie: Keep women in your life.
- 3:31Christie: You know, if you're a mom or if.
- 3:32Christie: Men, if you're a dad, keep people in your life to learn from.
- 3:36Christie: Yeah.
- 3:37Christie: And, um, to just to grow into your own, um, style of doing things as you, as you learn from others.
- 3:48Cheryl New (2): I really like that.
- 3:50Cheryl New (2): And the fact that I'd listen to them.
- 3:52Cheryl New (2): Doesn't mean I have to do it.
- 3:54Cheryl New (2): Yeah.
- 3:54Cheryl New (2): But to not cut that off because there's a lot of cutoff.
- 3:57Cheryl New (2): Mm-hmm.
- 3:58Cheryl New (2): Although that's the old way, that's old fashioned.
- 4:00Cheryl New (2): Right.
- 4:01Cheryl New (2): You know, that's cooking with a wood stove.
- 4:03Cheryl New (2): Right.
- 4:03Cheryl New (2): Throwing the
- 4:04Christie: baby out with the bath water thing.
- 4:05Christie: Yeah.
- 4:05Christie: And that's
- 4:06Cheryl New: the problem.
- 4:07Cheryl New: We don't wanna do that.
- 4:07Cheryl New: We want to listen to wise or loving voices.
- 4:11Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 4:12Cheryl New: Uh, even if they're our peers.
- 4:13Cheryl New: Right.
- 4:13Cheryl New: But just listen.
- 4:15Cheryl New: Um, to some human input.
- 4:17Christie: Right.
- 4:18Christie: And I think too, when we're learning from one another, like you said, whether they're peers or older generations or even younger, I mean, you and I we talked about last time, you and I both.
- 4:28Christie: Yes.
- 4:28Christie: Learn from people younger than us.
- 4:29Christie: Yeah.
- 4:30Christie: Anytime we're learning from someone, we can listen to maybe the principle, the underlying principle, and not necessarily have to use the same method.
- 4:40Christie: Yeah.
- 4:41Christie: Or we
- 4:41Cheryl New: can tweak
- 4:42Christie: it.
- 4:42Christie: Right.
- 4:43Cheryl New: But that's The thing, when you have online input mm-hmm.
- 4:48Cheryl New: This advice, advice, advice, whichever social media or podcast or whatever it is, right?
- 4:54Cheryl New: There's no nuance in it.
- 4:56Cheryl New: there's no human connection.
- 4:57Cheryl New: Right.
- 4:57Cheryl New: Even though I know a lot of people say, well, this friend of mine, and they
- 5:01Cheryl New (2): say, oh well, oh, it's not actually a friend.
- 5:03Cheryl New (2): Yes.
- 5:04Cheryl New (2): You know, it's an online presence.
- 5:05Cheryl New (2): Right.
- 5:06Cheryl New (2): And then also because I am
- 5:10Carol: older, I see the benefit in my own life and what I can offer to you or anybody else saying, well, this is what I've seen over the long haul.
- 5:20Carol: Mm mm-hmm.
- 5:20Carol: You know, and actually we talk about here, I didn't realize it, but I was doing the right thing and that it's been proven out over the long haul.
- 5:30Carol: That actually, that was a really wise thing.
- 5:32Carol: I'm glad I did it right.
- 5:34Carol: And also I would listen to voices That kind of sounded like what I just did.
- 5:38Carol: Mm-hmm.
- 5:39Carol: It's where it's someone who's offering it to you and kind of like a basket and say, here, pick out of this.
- 5:45Carol: Let me show you what I've got in here.
- 5:47Carol: Mm-hmm.
- 5:47Carol: And if you want to choose what you like out of it.
- 5:50Christie: That is really good.
- 5:51Christie: Cheryl.
- 5:51Christie: I think I.
- 5:52Christie: I am just now, as you're saying that, realizing that's what I'm attracted to in someone I wanna learn from is humility that says, Hey, I don't know everything.
- 6:02Christie: And that maybe could be a red flag of someone on the internet or in person of saying, whoa, maybe I wanna slow down on what I'm receiving from this person when they are dogmatic about their way being the only way, and every family needs to do it this way.
- 6:17Cheryl A: Well, And You see if it's an influencer or.
- 6:21Cheryl A: A nonprofit.
- 6:22Cheryl A: Mm-hmm.
- 6:23Cheryl A: Or a podcast.
- 6:24Cheryl A: All of those, their survival is based on all the hits, all the comments, all of that.
- 6:29Cheryl A: Right.
- 6:30Cheryl A: And so if they said, look, it doesn't matter, take it or leave it, whatever you want to do, they might feel like that's undermining.
- 6:37Cheryl A: Mm-hmm.
- 6:37Cheryl A: What they're trying to achieve.
- 6:38Cheryl A: Mm-hmm.
- 6:39Cheryl A: Also, I have an example of what we just said.
- 6:42Cheryl A: A friend of mine, and I may have told the story before, I don't remember.
- 6:45Cheryl A: And when she was.
- 6:48Cheryl A: A new mom and I think her son was three years old and she wanted this, she wanted wisdom from others, and this was a long time ago before we had the internet, but she really, really wanted to learn and so she looked for a family and they had multiple children and it looked great.
- 7:08Cheryl A: Mm-hmm.
- 7:09Cheryl A: It looked like they were doing the kinds of things that she wanted to reproduce in her family.
- 7:130: Mm-hmm.
- 7:14Cheryl New: Christie, she actually had a notebook and she went over to her house, opened the notebook and said, okay, please tell me what would you change if you could go back.
- 7:24Cheryl New: And I think her
- 7:25Carol: youngest Was like a senior in high school and the others were college and beyond.
- 7:29Carol: And she said, what would you change?
- 7:31Carol: And the woman kind of sat pensively and thought and said, no, I guess nothing.
- 7:37Carol: Nothing.
- 7:38Carol: Nothing.
- 7:38Christie: After raising a whole child, you have nothing that you would do
- 7:41Cheryl New: differently.
- 7:42Cheryl New: Not even a different diaper brand Uhhuh.
- 7:44Cheryl New: And
- 7:45Cheryl New (2): my friend, said, oh, thank you very much.
- 7:47Cheryl New (2): Mm-hmm.
- 7:48Cheryl New (2): And she closed the notebook and never went back.
- 7:50Christie: Yeah.
- 7:50Christie: 'cause that's not someone that has.
- 7:52Christie: Been teachable and learn, looked back with humility to say, oh, you know, these are the things that didn't work.
- 7:59Christie: And being able to offer that it has value.
- 8:01Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 8:02Christie: And wow.
- 8:03Christie: And she might have had something to say, but why would you shop there when you can go to.
- 8:08Christie: Someone else.
- 8:09Christie: Right.
- 8:09Christie: You know, it's interesting, I was vacuuming in my hallway the other day and in my hallway there's um, way to go.
- 8:15Christie: Yeah.
- 8:15Christie: There's a, a framed, um, vision statement that we had written.
- 8:20Christie: My husband and I had written for our family when I think we maybe had two kids at the time.
- 8:24Christie: Huh.
- 8:25Christie: did you find it outdated?
- 8:26Christie: So I was reading over, I was like, you know, I dust this thing, I vacuum around it.
- 8:30Christie: I, you know, walk by it every morning and multiple times a day.
- 8:34Christie: And I enjoyed what I wrote as I read it, and I thought, I still stand by all of this.
- 8:39Christie: And I, I feel like.
- 8:41Christie: Yes.
- 8:42Christie: These are the core elements of our values as a family.
- 8:45Christie: However, unlike this woman with the, you know, flawless background, I can look back and say a lot of the ways we tried to execute this, I wouldn't do again.
- 8:57Christie: Oh, wow.
- 8:57Christie: I, I feel like I can see things where they, maybe they were too rigid.
- 9:02Christie: Yes.
- 9:03Christie: Or, um, elevated more than, you know, inappropriately in, in certain times.
- 9:09Christie: And so.
- 9:10Christie: I don't know.
- 9:11Christie: I guess I just share that to say feel freedom to look back on your parenting years and just know that it's okay to say, yeah, that didn't work the way I thought it was going to.
- 9:24Cheryl New: And I really like what you said because if I look back, I mean there we always talk about, and here's, I blew it.
- 9:30Cheryl New: Here's how I blew it.
- 9:31Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 9:31Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 9:31Cheryl New: But a lot of things I would say.
- 9:36Cheryl New: My reason for doing it.
- 9:37Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 9:38Cheryl New: My value behind it mm-hmm.
- 9:39Cheryl New: Was solid.
- 9:40Cheryl New: Right.
- 9:40Cheryl New: It was good.
- 9:42Cheryl New: But my application was like you say,.
- 9:44Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 9:44Cheryl New: It wasn't balanced.
- 9:45Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 9:45Cheryl New: At all.
- 9:46Cheryl New: Nuanced.
- 9:47Cheryl New: Right.
- 9:47Cheryl New: It or it was legalistic.
- 9:49Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 9:50Cheryl New: No, we will be kind to each other.
- 9:52Cheryl New: Mm.
- 9:52Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 9:53Cheryl New: You can't legislate a heart of kindness.
- 9:57Cheryl New: Right.
- 9:57Cheryl New: I can deal with the actions, but in my immaturity and my youngness mm-hmm.
- 10:03Cheryl New: I was thinking, oh, if I legislate and I get the right actions Right.
- 10:09Cheryl New: That's always gonna give me the heart that I want and I'm instill the value.
- 10:12Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 10:13Cheryl New: Instead of focusing on the heart and the value.
- 10:15Cheryl New: And working on the, the actions.
- 10:19Cheryl New: Right.
- 10:20Cheryl New: I, I had the cart before the horse.
- 10:21Christie: Yeah.
- 10:22Christie: And we are humans raising humans.
- 10:26Christie: Yeah, exactly.
- 10:26Christie: You know, I mean, that is not sure we can write an ideal out on paper and, and make a plan, but, um, there's different.
- 10:34Christie: Circumstances.
- 10:35Christie: There's just different children, there's different life seasons.
- 10:39Christie: You know, kind of going back a little bit, talking about having real people in your life as mentors rather than, yes, someone behind a screen.
- 10:46Christie: I think about you and the wisdom that you were able to give me at different times.
- 10:51Christie: I remember you saying, okay, right now, I know I've said this to you a million times, but this season of your life, that is not what you need to be worrying about.
- 10:59Christie: Wow.
- 10:59Christie: And so you were able to, since you knew me, you knew what our family was walking through.
- 11:04Christie: You knew the hardships we might've been facing.
- 11:06Christie: You were able to say.
- 11:08Christie: In real time.
- 11:09Christie: Yes.
- 11:10Christie: That's good advice.
- 11:11Christie: Right now is not the time for it.
- 11:13Cheryl New: And see, that's what I love about a live mentor.
- 11:16Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 11:17Cheryl New: Not my advice.
- 11:19Cheryl New: I, it sounds like really good advice.
- 11:20Cheryl New: Right.
- 11:20Cheryl New: I always go, well, that was good.
- 11:22Cheryl New: Um, but the problem is, is that instant overload of information mm-hmm.
- 11:29Cheryl New: From non-personal human, Outlets is fast, it's immediate, and there's no time to reflect on it.
- 11:37Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 11:38Cheryl New: There's no time to personalize it.
- 11:40Cheryl New: Right.
- 11:40Cheryl New: It's just going, this is what you have to do and, and particularly.
- 11:45Cheryl New: I would say so much of what's out there is so fear-based.
- 11:49Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 11:50Cheryl New: Because fear sells, right.
- 11:52Cheryl New: So there's a lot of fear base instead of a human being who's lived a while.
- 11:58Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 11:58Cheryl New: Sitting with you and listening
- 12:01Christie: yeah.
- 12:02Christie: I think in addition to fear being our motivation, sometimes, um, we are performing for the wrong audience in our parenting.
- 12:11Christie: Yeah.
- 12:11Christie: Whoever is in your head, whether it be the cancel culture of the internet or the critical.
- 12:19Christie: You know, parent or grandparent from your own life or, or even, I know something I have, have had thoughts of is the, um, both the phantom ideal that I wanted to be, absolutely.
- 12:32Christie: But also someone else that was really even in my life that was really good at something.
- 12:39Christie: I just wanted to be that so badly.
- 12:41Christie: And so I think we have to look at.
- 12:44Christie: You know, yes, like you said, fear, but also the other audiences that we feel like are watching us and, and grading us and critiquing us.
- 12:53Cheryl New: Okay.
- 12:53Cheryl New: So what we're kind of saying is be careful where we get our identity.
- 12:56Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 12:57Cheryl New: Be careful of, I would say fear.
- 13:00Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 13:00Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 13:01Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 13:01Cheryl New: And, and the others.
- 13:02Cheryl New: Be aware of your audience.
- 13:03Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 13:03Cheryl New: What audience are you playing to?
- 13:05Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 13:05Cheryl New: Because in the world of influencers, it's all about audience.
- 13:08Cheryl New: Right.
- 13:09Cheryl New: No matter, the better they are, the less you realize that they're working their audience.
- 13:13Cheryl New: Right.
- 13:14Cheryl New: Okay.
- 13:14Cheryl New: 'cause they're really good at it.
- 13:15Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 13:16Cheryl New: Um.
- 13:16Cheryl New: And it doesn't mean they're all to be discounted That's what we have to take into account.
- 13:20Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 13:21Cheryl New: Rather than discounting.
- 13:22Cheryl New: Right.
- 13:22Cheryl New: Okay.
- 13:22Cheryl New: So if we're talking about what we take into account, we are trying to say, we encourage you to live out your family values.
- 13:28Cheryl New: Okay, so how would we encourage a parent says, okay, I wanna do that.
- 13:32Cheryl New: How do I put into place our values well, the first thing, kind of what we've already said.
- 13:380: Mm-hmm.
- 13:39Cheryl A: I would say, first, figure out your values and your priorities.
- 13:43Cheryl A: young mom recently, and she had some hard decisions to make and she, uh, had just had too much on her plate.
- 13:50Cheryl A: And had to make some decisions.
- 13:52Cheryl A: What was happening, wasn't working.
- 13:540: Mm-hmm.
- 13:54Cheryl New: And so she real wisely, sat down and spent some time not online.
- 14:00Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 14:01Cheryl New: Sat down and said, okay, what are my values and then what are my priorities?
- 14:07Cheryl New: And that's what she did.
- 14:08Cheryl New: She looked at her values and our priorities.
- 14:12Cheryl New: Then she considered the advice she was getting.
- 14:140: Mm-hmm.
- 14:15Cheryl A: And then from that she said, okay, this is what I'm going to do.
- 14:18Cheryl A: So I think that's a really great order, right.
- 14:21Cheryl A: Of figure out what are our values first.
- 14:24Cheryl A: Mm-hmm.
- 14:24Cheryl A: And if you're married, that's a definitely a couple things, right?
- 14:28Cheryl A: And like what you just said earlier, if they're real core values, they probably don't change.
- 14:33Cheryl A: Right?
- 14:34Cheryl A: Priorities change.
- 14:35Cheryl A: Mm-hmm.
- 14:36Cheryl A: So.
- 14:36Cheryl A: If you have little ones, teens, whatever you have, your priorities can change.
- 14:41Cheryl A: So that needs to be flexible.
- 14:42Cheryl A: Mm-hmm.
- 14:43Cheryl A: Then you start looking at the advice, whether it's live or.
- 14:47Cheryl A: Electronic.
- 14:48Christie: Right?
- 14:49Christie: Yeah.
- 14:49Christie: I think another thing we've talked about before on the podcast is thinking about the adults that you want your kids to be.
- 14:56Christie: Oh,
- 14:560: I like that.
- 14:57Christie: Yeah.
- 14:57Christie: Working backwards from the 40-year-old that you want your children to be, and then breaking it down to, okay, right now at three, what, what things should I be implementing in my parenting to help sculpt and shape them to be that 40-year-old?
- 15:13Christie: And that's.
- 15:14Christie: Obviously gonna change at different ages, different seasons, but it, it will help you to focus in on, okay.
- 15:22Christie: Do I really care that they're on this, you know, soccer league that takes us outta the house six nights a week?
- 15:29Christie: Yeah.
- 15:30Christie: Is that really gonna matter when they're 40 years old?
- 15:32Christie: No.
- 15:33Christie: But work ethic might be what you're after.
- 15:36Christie: And so how can I implement that that.
- 15:38Christie: Doesn't take us away from the dinner table six days a week.
- 15:40Cheryl New: And see, that's a good example of, I go to our values first.
- 15:44Cheryl New: And so I look at what my values are.
- 15:46Cheryl New: I do wanna work ethic, but I also want to say relationships matter.
- 15:50Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 15:50Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 15:51Cheryl New: How do we live that out as a family and then say, now let's look at the soccer thing.
- 15:56Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 15:57Cheryl New: And then it might be soccer when they're little.
- 15:59Cheryl New: It might be whether they go to a high rated academic route mm-hmm.
- 16:05Cheryl New: In their upper schooling years, whatever it is that the application changes, but the values.
- 16:11Cheryl New: don't, and the priorities mm-hmm.
- 16:14Cheryl New: Shift.
- 16:14Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 16:14Christie: Does that make sense?
- 16:14Christie: Yeah.
- 16:15Christie: And different seasons, you may find yourself wanting to prioritize different values over others.
- 16:20Christie: Yeah.
- 16:20Christie: I think we said it not too long ago.
- 16:21Christie: You can do it all, but you can't do it all at once.
- 16:23Christie: Right, exactly..
- 16:24Christie: I remember one of my daughters started a competitive dance team, and she really wanted to do this, and so she started it and then we get a few weeks in and she doesn't wanna do it anymore.
- 16:35Christie: And one of Our values was, you know, start finishing what you start.
- 16:40Christie: If you say you're gonna do something, carry it through.
- 16:42Christie: And so she had to do it all the way through.
- 16:45Christie: And, you know, that was a sacrifice for her.
- 16:47Christie: It was a sacrifice for us.
- 16:48Christie: But that character trait was what we were after.
- 16:52Christie: It wasn't that we wanted her to be a, you know, worldwide known dancer or anything like that, but that was something we were prioritizing in our family in that season.
- 17:02Cheryl New: And an additional question.
- 17:04Cheryl New: Would be, is this realistic for this child in this season?
- 17:09Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 17:09Cheryl New: Because let's say, yeah, you're gonna do competitive and then you find out you're pregnant with twins.
- 17:13Cheryl New: Right.
- 17:14Cheryl New: Okay.
- 17:14Cheryl New: Whoa.
- 17:15Cheryl New: We're not legalistically, going to learn work ethic.
- 17:18Cheryl New: Yes.
- 17:18Cheryl New: Yes.
- 17:19Cheryl New: Instead, go, wait.
- 17:20Cheryl New: In this season, this isn't realistic.
- 17:21Christie: Right.
- 17:22Christie: And for the family as a whole, I remember you saying, I think it was something Bill used to say of the family, sacrifices for the weakest member and I, I think.
- 17:31Christie: You know, that would be a perfect example of that.
- 17:33Christie: Okay.
- 17:34Christie: Mom's pregnant with twins.
- 17:35Christie: Things have to change.
- 17:36Christie: We're gonna honor mom for this season.
- 17:38Christie: Or, you know, this child needs a surgery.
- 17:41Christie: We're gonna honor this child during the season.
- 17:44Cheryl New: And, his value behind that is we are a family.
- 17:47Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 17:48Cheryl New: And we are about the relationships with each other.
- 17:51Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 17:51Cheryl New: We lift them up and we hold them and we walk alongside'em because that's the deep value, right.
- 17:57Cheryl New: We value this person.
- 17:590: Mm-hmm.
- 17:59Cheryl New: Whatever it is.
- 18:00Cheryl New: And that would include, um.
- 18:04Cheryl New: Even emotionally difficult children.
- 18:06Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 18:07Cheryl New: Or, someone's going through a really hard time mm-hmm.
- 18:11Cheryl New: That the family will flex and grow to love that person even in their difficult season, regardless of what the advice is.
- 18:20Cheryl New: Right.
- 18:20Cheryl New: Okay, a deeper value.
- 18:22Cheryl New: Is the value of this child.
- 18:24Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 18:24Cheryl New: Does that make sense?
- 18:25Cheryl New: So good.
- 18:26Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 18:26Cheryl New: You know, just a few quick things.
- 18:28Cheryl New: We've said so much, maybe a few kind of almost popcorn questions is to ask yourself if we do this, if I make these choices, if I do this, does this bring peace or pressure?
- 18:41Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 18:41Cheryl New: And so.
- 18:43Cheryl New: You have to really be self-aware.
- 18:45Cheryl New: 'cause peace doesn't mean this is easier, right.
- 18:48Cheryl New: Because it's like boundaries.
- 18:50Cheryl New: Okay.
- 18:50Cheryl New: You know, I'm all about boundaries.
- 18:52Cheryl New: Uhhuh and boundaries doesn't always bring a peacefulness.
- 18:560: Mm-hmm.
- 18:57Cheryl New: But down in my core, it brings such peace because Right, right.
- 19:01Cheryl New: And it's healthy.
- 19:02Cheryl New: Or we're gonna do this'cause everybody's doing it and whatever.
- 19:06Cheryl New: And all it does is mount pressure on the family.
- 19:09Cheryl New: I would listen to that.
- 19:11Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 19:11Cheryl New: And go what's behind it, and then think your way through it.
- 19:15Cheryl New: Makes sense.
- 19:15Cheryl New: Yeah, it does.
- 19:17Cheryl New: Does this create connection or create distance because our family is about relationships.
- 19:26Cheryl New: Within our family and outside of our family, does this great advice that I'm getting from somewhere.
- 19:32Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 19:33Cheryl New: Does this promote relationship?
- 19:34Cheryl New: Does this create relationship, or does this separate?
- 19:38Cheryl New: Mm, I like that everybody does their own thing.
- 19:40Cheryl New: Right?
- 19:410: Hmm.
- 19:42Cheryl New: But I think when I'm listening to whatever it is, whether it's in a podcast on TikTok, live human being.
- 19:53Cheryl New: Is this source proving to be wise?
- 19:56Cheryl New: Mm.
- 19:57Cheryl New: Or are they just loud?
- 19:58Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 19:59Cheryl New: Because there's so many loud voices out there and something gets trendy.
- 20:040: Mm-hmm.
- 20:04Cheryl New: And suddenly everybody's talking about whatever it is.
- 20:09Christie: Ba baby lead weaning or Yeah.
- 20:12Christie: Co-sleeping or all of it.
- 20:14Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 20:14Cheryl New: And suddenly it gets real trendy and very loud.
- 20:17Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 20:17Cheryl New: And you have to stop and go, wait just a minute.
- 20:19Cheryl New: Am I hearing this because it's loud?
- 20:220: Mm-hmm.
- 20:230: When
- 20:23Cheryl New: I really look at it through all these things we're saying.
- 20:26Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 20:26Cheryl New: Is this actually from the source
- 20:28Christie: wise, what they're telling you?
- 20:29Christie: Yeah.
- 20:30Christie: Yeah.
- 20:31Christie: I, I think that feels like a personal challenge to think on how I would define the word wise or wisdom.
- 20:37Christie: Um, because what I do know, and maybe this is, this is where we land the plane here, but is that it's not quick that wisdom is slow.
- 20:47Cheryl New: That's really, that
- 20:48Christie: is found in, um.
- 20:51Christie: People who have have been at it for a while.
- 20:53Christie: Yeah.
- 20:53Christie: Not who are new on the playing field.
- 20:55Christie: Yeah.
- 20:56Christie: I think wisdom is found in lots of time with others in relationships and, um.
- 21:04Christie: It's not gonna be the instant hit that you want.
- 21:07Christie: You know, it's a lot easier to just Google knowledge.
- 21:10Christie: Yeah.
- 21:11Christie: Very good.
- 21:11Christie: And information.
- 21:13Christie: That's it.
- 21:13Christie: That's, but it's different than wisdom.
- 21:15Cheryl New: That's a very good thing.
- 21:16Cheryl New: Is this knowledge or information?
- 21:18Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 21:18Cheryl New: Or is this wisdom?
- 21:19Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 21:19Cheryl New: I think that's the great divide there.
- 21:22Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 21:22Cheryl New: That's really good.
- 21:23Cheryl New: And then there's not a quick answer, but I like things that help me figure something out.
- 21:27Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 21:28Cheryl New: And I go, go, okay, this is information about.
- 21:31Cheryl New: Whatever this kind of diaper, right?
- 21:33Cheryl New: Or choosing my school, which school model are we gonna use?
- 21:37Cheryl New: We can gather information and then I wanna look, but what is, what wisdom mm-hmm.
- 21:43Cheryl New: Is in all of this.
- 21:43Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 21:43Cheryl New: That is great.
- 21:44Christie: Yeah.
- 21:45Christie: And I think big picture, these last couple episodes, what we've been talking about is.
- 21:50Christie: Freedom and peace like we are going to make mistakes.
- 21:55Christie: Absolutely.
- 21:55Christie: At the end of raising your kids when they're completely released and on their own, there will be things that you wish you would've done differently.
- 22:02Christie: There will be a million things your kids will tell you you should have done differently.
- 22:07Christie: Um.
- 22:08Christie: But I remember telling my kids, you know, after they had all graduated high school, I said, I didn't get a hundred percent of it right, but I gave you 100% of what I had.
- 22:18Christie: Oh, that good..
- 22:18Christie: And I think that's, that's the goal of successful parenting, is to give your all and give, give 100% of who you are and everything you have to offer.
- 22:28Christie: And sure you're gonna get some things wrong, but if you've loved them well, um, that's what matters.
- 22:34Christie: That's what matters.
- 22:35Christie: Yeah.
- 22:35Cheryl New: And in contrast to that woman.
- 22:37Cheryl New: 20 something years ago.
- 22:39Cheryl New: I loved what you said.
- 22:41Cheryl New: I think I would consider a person wise who goes, no, I didn't do
- 22:45Cheryl A: it all right.
- 22:47Cheryl A: and this is what I learned.
- 22:48Cheryl A: Mm-hmm.
- 22:48Cheryl A: Mm-hmm.
- 22:49Cheryl A: And listening to those voices.
- 22:52Cheryl A: Yeah.
- 22:52Cheryl A: And the more seasoned, the better.
- 22:55Cheryl A: Oh, this is good.
- 22:56Cheryl A: So good.
- 22:56Cheryl A: You know, wish I'd had all those voices I know.
- 22:59Cheryl A: Can I, in my life, can rewind and listen to this podcast?
- 23:02Cheryl A: Thanks.
- 23:03Cheryl A: Hey parents, remember, hang in there.
