- 0:53Speaker 4: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. This is Carl Lee and I
- 0:56Speaker 4: have in the studio with the Lisa Odi and Hollis
- 1:03Speaker 4: Lewis here with us today again. Man, there's a lot
- 1:09Speaker 4: of crazy kind of things going on, like in sports
- 1:14Speaker 4: football everywhere, everywhere, everything everyway. So I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 1:21Speaker 4: start with college football having the they want five years
- 1:28Speaker 4: of eligibility. Okay, now, I gotta go back. Okay, y'all
- 1:34Speaker 4: gotta bear with me just a little bit.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Just but before we start, let me let me ask
- 1:38Speaker 2: a qualifying question. So that means five years of playing
- 1:43Speaker 2: for eligibility for an athlete. Well, what I'm saying is
- 1:47Speaker 2: that under the current system, you have five years with
- 1:51Speaker 2: the red shirt. You have the red shirt, right, and
- 1:52Speaker 2: then you have the four years old ability for play
- 1:55Speaker 2: on the field. So what this is talking about now,
- 1:57Speaker 2: and I'm asking the question, is just saying five years
- 2:00Speaker 2: of play plus the red shirt, So that means you
- 2:02Speaker 2: would have a.
- 2:03Speaker 5: Toll six the way I read it today, And guys,
- 2:07Speaker 5: you know, I'm not sure. I'm not the expert either,
- 2:10Speaker 5: but uh, what they wanted it's called five in five model,
- 2:15Speaker 5: and it would do away with red shirt. Oh freshman, okay,
- 2:18Speaker 5: So you've got five years wherever you go or in
- 2:21Speaker 5: the treasure, five years to play and if you're on
- 2:24Speaker 5: a team and you don't play that year, you know
- 2:27Speaker 5: you you lose that year.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:29Speaker 5: So but they do away with the red shirt, which
- 2:32Speaker 5: is I have a problem with that because that's gonna
- 2:34Speaker 5: affect your high school kids immensely, Like what's gonna happen
- 2:38Speaker 5: is you're gonna have these You're gonna have a bunch
- 2:40Speaker 5: of these twenty three year old five year players that
- 2:44Speaker 5: are gonna fill spots for you know, their whole eligibility.
- 2:48Speaker 5: And then you've got the high school kids that are
- 2:51Speaker 5: gonna probably have to go JUCO or even because they're
- 2:53Speaker 5: not gonna be red shirt freshmen anymore, they'll have to
- 2:56Speaker 5: go JUCO or Division two to prove their abilities. Do
- 2:59Speaker 5: you think so?
- 3:00Speaker 2: So? Well, let me ask another question, So does the
- 3:03Speaker 2: JUCO now does that count towards that five years? So
- 3:07Speaker 2: so you said if I spend a year in JUCO,
- 3:10Speaker 2: that means when I move up, only have four years
- 3:12Speaker 2: four years left? Four years. Now, that's the way I
- 3:14Speaker 2: read that. That's that's how.
- 3:17Speaker 4: It is now functioning without So I'm going to assume
- 3:23Speaker 4: that that's that's the same process with the five year
- 3:29Speaker 4: right right?
- 3:29Speaker 2: So if you.
- 3:33Speaker 5: So, do kids get and let me ask another question,
- 3:36Speaker 5: do kids get red shirted that often now in this
- 3:38Speaker 5: new system?
- 3:41Speaker 2: Well that was going to be my point because I
- 3:42Speaker 2: actually like this. I think this makes sense currently because
- 3:47Speaker 2: what happens now is that if you're income and freshmen,
- 3:51Speaker 2: you don't necessarily need to go and you're not like
- 3:54Speaker 2: power for ready, right, you can go to and that's
- 3:58Speaker 2: what I tell kids now, just I'm a little bit
- 4:00Speaker 2: all over the place, but you don't have to go
- 4:02Speaker 2: to your dream school initially. You don't have to go
- 4:05Speaker 2: D one initially. If you can go to D two
- 4:08Speaker 2: junior college, even D three and you can ball out
- 4:11Speaker 2: on that level, you're gonna get a look because as
- 4:14Speaker 2: you just mentioned, how excuse me, those power forward programs
- 4:18Speaker 2: aren't necessarily they're not looking at the high school kid first, right,
- 4:22Speaker 2: They're looking at the portal first. Then't high school exactly?
- 4:25Speaker 2: I would say maybe portal Junior college didn't high school,
- 4:28Speaker 2: So they're not necessarily looking at high school kids first.
- 4:30Speaker 2: So I think this is a good opportunity. You go,
- 4:33Speaker 2: you can go somewhere and play for maybe a season
- 4:35Speaker 2: or two or maybe even three. Think if you had
- 4:37Speaker 2: three years like it's state and you were able to
- 4:39Speaker 2: really build yourself up, you get some national recognition, you
- 4:43Speaker 2: team is winning, then you can be able to step
- 4:45Speaker 2: up to go to Marshall or WVU something like that.
- 4:47Speaker 2: So I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing.
- 4:49Speaker 4: But seeing okay, but let's be West Virginia State and say,
- 4:56Speaker 4: are we going to be a do we want to
- 4:58Speaker 4: be just a foundation building the kid who's gonna now
- 5:03Speaker 4: go from us going to play for us for a
- 5:05Speaker 4: year or two and then going to spend the rest
- 5:07Speaker 4: of his three years his best years at Marshall or
- 5:11Speaker 4: WU or wherever.
- 5:12Speaker 2: But I say that's what it is. I mean, I'm
- 5:14Speaker 2: not saying that's what it is now, but I think
- 5:17Speaker 2: and again, the way I'm looking at this, the way again,
- 5:22Speaker 2: the way I'm conceptualizing this is like it's almost saying
- 5:26Speaker 2: like those Division two, the lower division ones, it's almost
- 5:30Speaker 2: like they're going to be a farm system or the
- 5:32Speaker 2: power for it exactly, it's going to be a farm
- 5:37Speaker 2: system for those schools. Less you're on the top, Yeah,
- 5:40Speaker 2: everything else is, everything below you is going to be
- 5:43Speaker 2: a farm system. It's a farm system. But and I'll
- 5:45Speaker 2: say this kind of two points off of that is
- 5:48Speaker 2: that I think if this is the case, if it's
- 5:52Speaker 2: manifested where these lower schools are going to be a
- 5:56Speaker 2: farm system, then they have to figure out a way
- 5:58Speaker 2: to start to compens save these kids these schools. Because
- 6:02Speaker 2: I think that's the problem. Yeah, Because if I got
- 6:03Speaker 2: a kid, and if I'm losing my best three players.
- 6:06Speaker 2: And I'm just using State as an example, and they're
- 6:09Speaker 2: going to Marshall or w v U, then it has
- 6:11Speaker 2: to be some sort of kickback to me to make
- 6:14Speaker 2: sure my program has sustainability. Okay, Now the problem I
- 6:18Speaker 2: have with that what do we do now?
- 6:22Speaker 4: So what are we doing with the pay of that player?
- 6:24Speaker 4: Because if I'm leaving in my mind, how I'm thinking
- 6:29Speaker 4: if if you come recruit me from wherever from State?
- 6:35Speaker 2: In my mind, bro, what's my money? What's what's what's
- 6:40Speaker 2: what am I work? What do you mean? I want dollars?
- 6:44Speaker 2: But it's gonna be that's that's individual though, you know,
- 6:47Speaker 2: based on your accolades and all that.
- 6:49Speaker 5: Right, they're not sure if the policy is going to
- 6:56Speaker 5: happen like this is this is still in the worst
- 6:59Speaker 5: but they're pretty sure or that, you know, the way
- 7:01Speaker 5: things look, it's pretty favorable that it's gonna happen this way.
- 7:04Speaker 5: It seems inevitable to me. I mean, just getting rid
- 7:07Speaker 5: of the red shirt, you know that that part of it.
- 7:09Speaker 5: And like you said, it's not a totally bad thing.
- 7:13Speaker 5: I do think for coaches it maybe make things a
- 7:15Speaker 5: little more complicated, sure, because they're not going to be
- 7:17Speaker 5: able to you know, if they let's say they bring
- 7:20Speaker 5: in a guy, they do recruit somebody from a high
- 7:23Speaker 5: school or a juco and and and they're good enough
- 7:25Speaker 5: to play in a year or two, but they're just
- 7:27Speaker 5: not good enough right now, and they sit a year,
- 7:29Speaker 5: then they're.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Gonna they lost. They lost that year, and.
- 7:32Speaker 5: They're going to the transfer portal right away because they're like, well,
- 7:34Speaker 5: I'm not playing here, and so you lose that player
- 7:37Speaker 5: even though they have potential. So that's a can of
- 7:38Speaker 5: worms that coaches have to deal with, right.
- 7:40Speaker 2: But I also think to that point, and that's a
- 7:42Speaker 2: very good point. Again, what's going to happen is like
- 7:45Speaker 2: I think there's this thing if it, if it goes
- 7:47Speaker 2: through it, it plays out. Now that kid is going to say, well, look,
- 7:51Speaker 2: if I go to w v U and I'm not
- 7:53Speaker 2: going to start that year, I'm gonna sit. I'm gonna
- 7:55Speaker 2: lose that year, right, I'm going to go somewhere to
- 7:58Speaker 2: a play, right, So I'm going want to go to
- 8:01Speaker 2: and again it may be fairmouey, maybe a D two
- 8:04Speaker 2: or maybe a lower D one. I'll go there and play,
- 8:06Speaker 2: get my reps up and then go and I'm telling you,
- 8:09Speaker 2: I think we're gonna get to a point where when
- 8:11Speaker 2: we talk about the power for schools, and particularly schools
- 8:15Speaker 2: in the SEC, where we're not going to have freshman
- 8:18Speaker 2: in sophomore no more like again, they're gonna come in.
- 8:22Speaker 2: All those kids are gonna come from transporporter. You'll have,
- 8:24Speaker 2: like the exceptions those elite high school athletes, but you're
- 8:28Speaker 2: gonna have just teams full of juniors and sophomores that
- 8:31Speaker 2: come in first players.
- 8:32Speaker 4: And there's been talk about it that being pretty much
- 8:36Speaker 4: where we're at. Practically, that's practically where we are where
- 8:39Speaker 4: we're at right then, Okay, so.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Help me what do we between both of you.
- 8:46Speaker 4: I'm a really pretty good freshman coming out of high
- 8:51Speaker 4: or I'm senior coming out of high school. What's my options?
- 8:56Speaker 4: Who are either one of you all come and knocking
- 8:58Speaker 4: on my door?
- 8:59Speaker 2: I would say probably not. But if i'm if I'm
- 9:03Speaker 2: advising that kid again, if you find the opportunity to
- 9:06Speaker 2: go to that power, U powerful and you can just play.
- 9:09Speaker 2: And again that don't mean maybe you start to meet
- 9:10Speaker 2: special teams the other day. But I would also say
- 9:14Speaker 2: don't overlook those smaller D one and those division two
- 9:17Speaker 2: schools because if you have the work ethic, if to
- 9:19Speaker 2: your point, if you have the metrics, and if you
- 9:22Speaker 2: go there and ball out, you made that scholarship from
- 9:25Speaker 2: Marshall WVU may turn into a scholarship from Georgia and Alabama.
- 9:29Speaker 2: So it's to me, it's about going somewhere that's gonna
- 9:33Speaker 2: fit your skill set, giving you an opportunity to play
- 9:36Speaker 2: and ball wherever you at. Because if you're a Division
- 9:39Speaker 2: two All American and you meet those metrics standards of
- 9:42Speaker 2: the power for you're gonna go.
- 9:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:45Speaker 2: And that's just the bottom line you're going.
- 9:47Speaker 5: And I think also the timing of when they try
- 9:50Speaker 5: to implement this role is crucial. Like if they're looking
- 9:52Speaker 5: at this for next year, they need to do it
- 9:54Speaker 5: like yesterday, because you've caught these football catchers that are
- 9:57Speaker 5: gonna be dealing with, you know, the transfer portal win
- 10:00Speaker 5: in January. You've got basketball programs getting ready. You know
- 10:03Speaker 5: that would affect the Tall athletics. You know, if this
- 10:06Speaker 5: is something they're playing with and they're thinking about doing
- 10:08Speaker 5: it next year, it's almost already too late. But if
- 10:12Speaker 5: they're going to do it, they need to do it
- 10:13Speaker 5: now or wait another year. Or two. In my opinion, I.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Agree with that too.
- 10:20Speaker 4: I'm trying to be the parent of that kid that
- 10:25Speaker 4: is going to do exactly what you said, like it's
- 10:28Speaker 4: going to go to a D two juco with the
- 10:34Speaker 4: idea and the hopes that somebody's going to come in
- 10:39Speaker 4: and bring me, bring me in with pay. What if
- 10:45Speaker 4: you run into a situation to where you don't get
- 10:50Speaker 4: that pay, you have some people contacting you. So let's
- 10:54Speaker 4: say I'm a school that really doesn't have that kind
- 10:56Speaker 4: of money. I come in and I say, hey, Hollis man,
- 10:58Speaker 4: I think you could probably play, you know, right now as.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Soon as you get soon as you get on the field.
- 11:02Speaker 4: You you are a guy, and you haven't yet heard
- 11:07Speaker 4: from any money.
- 11:10Speaker 2: What do you do? I mean, it's just about earning
- 11:13Speaker 2: the money. At that point, you may not be able
- 11:15Speaker 2: to be in that class to get it off the back.
- 11:17Speaker 2: But let's just say you've been two years, You've already
- 11:19Speaker 2: got You've already spent your two years. Let's say, lord, yeah,
- 11:24Speaker 2: I got I got two years already count.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Against me mm hm, And I haven't really because let's
- 11:30Speaker 4: say I wasn't really the star right to But you're
- 11:32Speaker 4: getting some looks, but you're getting some looks.
- 11:34Speaker 2: You gotta player. It's like it's the same thing back
- 11:36Speaker 2: in the day. You play your way into a scholarship,
- 11:38Speaker 2: you play your way into some nil. So it's it's
- 11:41Speaker 2: the same concept, different pool of money, but you still
- 11:44Speaker 2: pay your You still have the opportunity to play your
- 11:47Speaker 2: way into some money and to me, and it goes
- 11:49Speaker 2: back to the point that I said earlier, because that situation.
- 11:52Speaker 2: I think those situations are definitely going to happen, right yes,
- 11:55Speaker 2: where hey, we can offer you a scholarship, but we
- 11:57Speaker 2: really can't offer you no money because you ain't really prove.
- 11:59Speaker 2: But I also think that the NCAA, which they're just
- 12:03Speaker 2: always so late to the party, they're seem to be
- 12:05Speaker 2: a little doing a little catching up. Now they have
- 12:08Speaker 2: to create a revenue model where it comes excuse me,
- 12:10Speaker 2: a revenue sharing model where it comes all the way
- 12:13Speaker 2: down where D three's yacht Juco's everybody's getting a little
- 12:18Speaker 2: part of that money. And again your part of at
- 12:21Speaker 2: your at state. It may be only we got two
- 12:24Speaker 2: hundred and fifty grand to work with for our athletic program,
- 12:27Speaker 2: as far as you know, paying our athletes. It may
- 12:29Speaker 2: be smaller, but at the very least you can get
- 12:32Speaker 2: some sort of incentive so we can still maintain our
- 12:35Speaker 2: programs and we can get those athletes to your point
- 12:38Speaker 2: with the hope of moving up. Because I think that's
- 12:40Speaker 2: what it's gonna be seeing. I'm thinking, and I'll ask
- 12:44Speaker 2: both of you this question. Take yourself.
- 12:48Speaker 4: Put yourself in a situation of being one of the
- 12:51Speaker 4: best athletes at your school, okay, at your school, and
- 12:58Speaker 4: one of us go somewhere it's getting paid a ton
- 13:01Speaker 4: of money, and the other two legitimately thinks and has
- 13:07Speaker 4: the right to think I'm as good, maybe even better.
- 13:10Speaker 2: You know, he might have been the third of us.
- 13:12Speaker 2: You know, I could have You could have been one.
- 13:14Speaker 2: You could have been two.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Because you because recruiting isn't like guaranteed right, Like it's
- 13:22Speaker 4: like we can see talent and scouts may not even
- 13:26Speaker 4: talk to you.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I'm how do you like?
- 13:30Speaker 4: How are players going to feel sitting there watching and
- 13:33Speaker 4: listening to people get this money?
- 13:36Speaker 2: And we want to talk about teamwork.
- 13:37Speaker 4: We want to talk about team We want to talk
- 13:39Speaker 4: about unity, we want to talk about let's all come
- 13:41Speaker 4: together and win a game. I'm going to I'm probably
- 13:45Speaker 4: going to go to a school, not because you're there,
- 13:47Speaker 4: not because Lisa is there. I'm going because they're paying me.
- 13:51Speaker 4: That doesn't help how I can socialize in the school,
- 13:56Speaker 4: How I like the school, how I campus, all those things.
- 14:00Speaker 2: That we used to We're loyalty.
- 14:03Speaker 4: We were told though, right when you when you go
- 14:05Speaker 4: to go visit the school, you want to light the campus,
- 14:07Speaker 4: you want to you know, all these kinds of things, right, I.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Mean, I think all of.
- 14:13Speaker 5: That is gone, and it has been. I really don't
- 14:15Speaker 5: think this changes from that aspect of it.
- 14:18Speaker 2: It may have already gone.
- 14:19Speaker 5: I mean I think that was already gone when when
- 14:21Speaker 5: nil was introduced. I mean, I think totally now. I mean,
- 14:25Speaker 5: I don't want to sound harsh, but I think most
- 14:27Speaker 5: players now are out there for you know, the money,
- 14:30Speaker 5: and and wherever they get the biggest paycheck is where
- 14:33Speaker 5: they're land. And you know that most of those places, though,
- 14:36Speaker 5: are also nice places. You know, the ones that are
- 14:39Speaker 5: they've got a nice campus, they've gotten nice to sell,
- 14:42Speaker 5: so you know that kind of goes hand in hand.
- 14:45Speaker 5: But you know the whole point of this, I just
- 14:47Speaker 5: don't and help me understand, guys, why would you want
- 14:51Speaker 5: to eliminate the red shirt year and go to this
- 14:55Speaker 5: five in five plan.
- 14:57Speaker 2: You got to look at it from like a business
- 14:59Speaker 2: then point, I don't want to pay you not to work,
- 15:03Speaker 2: and then you lose the whole year. I lose the
- 15:06Speaker 2: whole year as an employer. Then you transfer on me.
- 15:09Speaker 2: So I done paid you a whole year, I got
- 15:10Speaker 2: no production out of you on the field of court,
- 15:13Speaker 2: and then you leave.
- 15:14Speaker 5: But that was this. I mean even before money with scholarships,
- 15:17Speaker 5: when you read shirted guys, you didn't get any productivity
- 15:19Speaker 5: out of it. They didn't play.
- 15:20Speaker 2: I mean, scholarships is relative. I mean, you know, what
- 15:23Speaker 2: is the school really losing by giving you a scholarship?
- 15:26Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, They're losing a room.
- 15:28Speaker 5: So once again it comes down to mind.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, And you know, like I said, and to
- 15:32Speaker 2: your point, I think that, you know, it's got to
- 15:35Speaker 2: be an emphasis on fit too, because it's like when
- 15:39Speaker 2: you say it's definitely about the money, You're gonna follow
- 15:42Speaker 2: the money, but it's also got to be emphasis on
- 15:45Speaker 2: do I fit into this structure, this program, this offense,
- 15:49Speaker 2: this defense. So I think that it's got to be
- 15:52Speaker 2: a maybe a harder look at those things because if
- 15:55Speaker 2: you don't and you find yourself not paying, they will
- 15:59Speaker 2: cut you. Now it's not like they can. They got
- 16:01Speaker 2: to hold you, yes, so they ain't got to keep you.
- 16:03Speaker 4: And see, I'm so so glad that you brought that up,
- 16:08Speaker 4: because the money may fit you, but you may not
- 16:13Speaker 4: fit the program. You gotta fit the program, you know.
- 16:16Speaker 4: And and and we've seen a whether it's quarterback, whether
- 16:22Speaker 4: it's a running back, whether it's a line and whatever.
- 16:24Speaker 4: We've seen players go places and just not fit. And
- 16:28Speaker 4: it doesn't have to be on the football field. It
- 16:30Speaker 4: could be campus, it could be school, it could be
- 16:33Speaker 4: the socialization.
- 16:34Speaker 5: Of it, nothing to do with talent, any.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Of those kinds of things.
- 16:41Speaker 4: So all I heard was as Hollis recruiting me was
- 16:46Speaker 4: ten million dollars.
- 16:48Speaker 2: And and and the last offer I got was five.
- 16:52Speaker 2: And so where am I gonna go?
- 16:54Speaker 4: I'm going ten, but sure you are, and and Hollis
- 16:59Speaker 4: is gonna give me ten. With the thought process, maybe
- 17:01Speaker 4: even that I'm gonna play. I might even go out
- 17:06Speaker 4: and play for Hollis and be really good. But I
- 17:09Speaker 4: ain't got nothing happening on campus. I don't have nothing
- 17:13Speaker 4: hanging out in the dorms like I just I don't
- 17:16Speaker 4: fit like I don't have the you know, because everybody
- 17:19Speaker 4: when you go to college when it's a it's important
- 17:23Speaker 4: that you can be a part of a community, part
- 17:27Speaker 4: of a community, and when you lose that, but I
- 17:30Speaker 4: think we're losing that.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think we lost that. We're losing that
- 17:35Speaker 2: even outside of athletics, when you take like online school
- 17:38Speaker 2: and just the accessibility factor versus college experience, because those
- 17:42Speaker 2: are sort of two different things. Those are really we're
- 17:45Speaker 2: talking about. You know, when we talk about that college experience,
- 17:48Speaker 2: you're talking about academics and education, and I think to
- 17:52Speaker 2: that part of it, I think the focus now with
- 17:54Speaker 2: the accessibility portion online is strictly just about academics, and
- 17:58Speaker 2: with the athletic portion is just becoming about money. So
- 18:01Speaker 2: we're losing that experience. So, like I said, I think
- 18:06Speaker 2: maybe in some regards to this is a way to
- 18:09Speaker 2: make sure that if I have five years at the
- 18:12Speaker 2: very least, I can go to the school that fits me.
- 18:14Speaker 2: It may not be the big time school, but I
- 18:16Speaker 2: might be there for two and three years and enjoy
- 18:18Speaker 2: myself and then go get the bag. So maybe this
- 18:21Speaker 2: is a way to you know, sort of supplement that
- 18:23Speaker 2: to give kids more time to figure it out as
- 18:27Speaker 2: opposed to just going from place to place to place
- 18:29Speaker 2: based on opportunity and or money. You know.
- 18:32Speaker 5: And to your point, Karl and you made some really
- 18:34Speaker 5: good points to Hollis, But you know, the social aspects
- 18:38Speaker 5: of college, those don't exist like they did back when
- 18:40Speaker 5: we were in school. Just what you said with technology,
- 18:43Speaker 5: I mean, you know, if you go away to school,
- 18:47Speaker 5: you really social media is there. I mean you have relationships,
- 18:50Speaker 5: you can FaceTime people, you can you know, get online,
- 18:54Speaker 5: you can check out their whatever account and see, you know,
- 18:57Speaker 5: how they're doing. I mean kids today, even in high school,
- 19:00Speaker 5: and we've seen that, you know, kids cross lines that
- 19:02Speaker 5: there's not the rivalries like there used to be. Their buddies,
- 19:05Speaker 5: they all know each other. I mean, I think technology
- 19:07Speaker 5: and social media has just kind of changed that whole world.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Yeah, so.
- 19:12Speaker 4: Am I hearing that social media and a lot of
- 19:16Speaker 4: those types of venues.
- 19:20Speaker 2: That that's accessible.
- 19:23Speaker 4: Even Is that even attacking the sports realm of sure?
- 19:29Speaker 2: For sure? I mean as a kid, I mean, he's
- 19:32Speaker 2: a quarterback. He's been in like six different schools, and
- 19:35Speaker 2: I would guess some of that is just you know,
- 19:38Speaker 2: maybe relationships he has with like coaches or players at
- 19:41Speaker 2: those various stops. So I think like just the the
- 19:46Speaker 2: tradition of what we've known has the collegiate experience. Collectively,
- 19:52Speaker 2: we're like holding on to that by a thread, right,
- 19:55Speaker 2: And I think even to the lower schools, they probably
- 19:58Speaker 2: are going to offer much more of a collegiate experience
- 20:01Speaker 2: than maybe even some of the bigger schools. Just how
- 20:04Speaker 2: it goes and the numbers and everything like that. So
- 20:07Speaker 2: I think again, I think this could be a way
- 20:10Speaker 2: to sort of supplement that, to give kids just a
- 20:12Speaker 2: little bit more time to figure it out so they're
- 20:15Speaker 2: not in arrested transfer. But you know, all in all,
- 20:18Speaker 2: you know, things have changed, and it's just and it's
- 20:21Speaker 2: just a shame because and I ain't trying to get
- 20:24Speaker 2: on my sepbox. But that's why we need to maintain
- 20:26Speaker 2: the traditions of college sports. But we need we need
- 20:29Speaker 2: to maintain our rivalries. We need to make sure that
- 20:32Speaker 2: these schools are in the correct conference, because this is
- 20:35Speaker 2: all you have now, you know what I mean, when
- 20:37Speaker 2: you're not having like schools like like UCLA and USC
- 20:41Speaker 2: may not play or or WVU and pitt ain't playing
- 20:44Speaker 2: for three or four years, it's like, we need to
- 20:46Speaker 2: make sure that we do everything else to at the
- 20:49Speaker 2: very least hold on to the traditions that we have.
- 20:51Speaker 4: And Okay, so to that point, we know sports is
- 20:55Speaker 4: about money. How do you not continue those types of
- 21:01Speaker 4: rivalries like a WVU Pitt WVU Penn State, like those
- 21:06Speaker 4: kinds of and even even more so, not that it's
- 21:10Speaker 4: it's becoming or really never been a big rivalry, but
- 21:14Speaker 4: WVU and Marshall like, there's opportunity there to make money.
- 21:22Speaker 4: Why would you is there? How do we get away
- 21:25Speaker 4: from How do we get away from those? Like why
- 21:27Speaker 4: would you want to get away from that? Like why
- 21:29Speaker 4: would you like break from that?
- 21:30Speaker 5: I don't think that that most schools want to do that.
- 21:33Speaker 5: I think conference realignments have have played a huge role in,
- 21:37Speaker 5: you know, the impact on rivalry games because you've got
- 21:40Speaker 5: these schools going to different conferences, just like when Pitt
- 21:42Speaker 5: and when the BEG East is you know, Pitt went
- 21:45Speaker 5: to the ACC and W's in the Big twelve, and
- 21:48Speaker 5: so scheduling becomes more difficult when you're not in the
- 21:51Speaker 5: same conference.
- 21:53Speaker 4: God, if you're when you know, if you know that's
- 21:57Speaker 4: going to happen, like why would you like and I
- 21:59Speaker 4: and I get that's everything is about money, but how
- 22:02Speaker 4: do you walk away from those types?
- 22:04Speaker 2: But but I agree with you though, cause I think
- 22:07Speaker 2: we you know, maining maintaining tradition will bring in revenue
- 22:11Speaker 2: all the time. So I think, really, I would really
- 22:14Speaker 2: really like to see again. I keep mentioning their name,
- 22:17Speaker 2: the n double the n C double A and the
- 22:20Speaker 2: and the conferences and the presidents really get together and
- 22:23Speaker 2: just have a common sense conversation, like everything isn't about
- 22:27Speaker 2: short term money, right because like I said, you know,
- 22:31Speaker 2: like in the next few years, who is WVU playing
- 22:34Speaker 2: that we're really passionate about. Like we're not West Virginians,
- 22:39Speaker 2: We're not We're not passionate about Kansas. I mean the
- 22:42Speaker 2: w BU is rolling and they're doing good. Yeah, we
- 22:44Speaker 2: want to see and win No da da, but we're
- 22:45Speaker 2: not like it. It's not going to give you to
- 22:48Speaker 2: feel like the backyard brawl or playing for the Black
- 22:50Speaker 2: Diamond Trophy with Vtex, Like we don't we're not excited
- 22:54Speaker 2: about that. You're not gonna you're not gonna look at
- 22:57Speaker 2: when they when they post the schedule. You're not gonna
- 23:00Speaker 2: look or you're looking for those teams you're looking for
- 23:03Speaker 2: those games got the.
- 23:08Speaker 5: Blue like you, Pit Game, the big game is the
- 23:11Speaker 5: highlights the season.
- 23:13Speaker 2: But Game one two, Game two, three two.
- 23:16Speaker 5: Maybe it was three. That was three because they went
- 23:18Speaker 5: to Ohio. You're right, and.
- 23:19Speaker 4: Without those I don't care. Like you said, I don't
- 23:23Speaker 4: care who's coming in. But if you don't have that
- 23:26Speaker 4: that natural rivalry that you you know that you absolutely
- 23:31Speaker 4: hate that team. On the other side, we just know
- 23:33Speaker 4: that it's that team, yes, and we play in them,
- 23:36Speaker 4: we hope we win. That's not pit That's not Penn State,
- 23:40Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying. That's not who you like
- 23:44Speaker 4: go in hating that team.
- 23:45Speaker 5: And it's like I said, it's conference realignments. You've got
- 23:48Speaker 5: Penn State and a different conference. You've got Virginia Tech
- 23:51Speaker 5: over here and Pitt and and Big twelve is way
- 23:54Speaker 5: out west. I mean, it's just it's it's a matter
- 23:56Speaker 5: of logistics and being able to schedule those teams outside
- 24:00Speaker 5: of your conference play, and it's hard to do.
- 24:02Speaker 2: And again that's another boy, I'm glad you brought that up,
- 24:05Speaker 2: because that's like another point. If I'm the college president
- 24:07Speaker 2: and if I'm the a D I'm trying to figure out, like, hey,
- 24:11Speaker 2: we need to regionalize this because even because I have
- 24:14Speaker 2: to spend money on n I L I don't have
- 24:16Speaker 2: the money to travel. And the thing is, we only
- 24:18Speaker 2: think about the football team, where you have what you know,
- 24:21Speaker 2: five or six away games. Let's think about the basketball team,
- 24:25Speaker 2: the softball, the lacrosse teams, the tennis teams. Where you
- 24:29Speaker 2: got a tennis team having to go to Texas possibly
- 24:33Speaker 2: to play in a match. So I'm thinking like I
- 24:36Speaker 2: would really look, even if we're not going to do
- 24:38Speaker 2: the conferences or whatever the deal with that is, I
- 24:41Speaker 2: would almost like us to get rid of the conferences
- 24:44Speaker 2: and just go to a regional system. Yes, just go
- 24:47Speaker 2: to a regional system. This is what one of us,
- 24:50Speaker 2: but I think we need to do something.
- 24:52Speaker 5: I agree with. But it's about money.
- 24:54Speaker 2: It's costs. I mean, how much is travel calls?
- 24:56Speaker 5: I mean for the schools. But it's crazy for the conferences.
- 24:58Speaker 5: I mean, you know, especially you've got the SEC that
- 25:02Speaker 5: takes teams from different conferences. It seems like they're growing
- 25:04Speaker 5: every year. It feels like they took teams from the
- 25:06Speaker 5: Big twelve. They just keep expanding their their little kingdom.
- 25:10Speaker 2: But within their region. Though, because they can almost drive.
- 25:13Speaker 2: LSU could almost drive every game.
- 25:15Speaker 5: Yeah that they also have Texas right, Yeah, but.
- 25:17Speaker 2: That's right there, and they could potentially that could be
- 25:20Speaker 2: a drive.
- 25:20Speaker 4: Yeah, they could drive one day, rest, another day practice
- 25:24Speaker 4: and play. Yeah, and they got that kind of money
- 25:26Speaker 4: to if they, like I said, if they even again,
- 25:29Speaker 4: if they take a bus, even if they were to drive,
- 25:32Speaker 4: they could make that work and still become I.
- 25:35Speaker 2: Bet LSU and Alabama don't got an over three hour
- 25:38Speaker 2: flight to play a game.
- 25:40Speaker 5: That's probably true. No, I just think West Virginia was
- 25:43Speaker 5: an outside fit for the Big Twelve. The rest of
- 25:46Speaker 5: the Big Twelve teams are all kind of regional, aren't they.
- 25:48Speaker 5: And West Virginia we're way over here on you know,
- 25:50Speaker 5: on the East Coast practically, and they're all out west.
- 25:53Speaker 5: And so you know that that that was a decision
- 25:57Speaker 5: maybe that the administration should have thought more about whenever
- 26:00Speaker 5: they went into the Big Twelve. But I don't think
- 26:02Speaker 5: they had a choice at the time.
- 26:03Speaker 2: I didn't have a choice, an I had to go somewhere,
- 26:05Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. I think just the higher powers
- 26:07Speaker 2: need to step in and just kind of figure this
- 26:09Speaker 2: thing out. So like I said, you don't need like
- 26:11Speaker 2: USC and the Big ten playing like, come on, man,
- 26:15Speaker 2: all right.
- 26:15Speaker 4: Now, So I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna kind of
- 26:20Speaker 4: stick stick a pin in this one.
- 26:24Speaker 2: So are we are? We? Do we have student athletes?
- 26:29Speaker 4: Now?
- 26:29Speaker 6: Like?
- 26:30Speaker 4: Are they are? Are they student athletes? Because when's the last?
- 26:34Speaker 4: Has anybody ever heard of a student a superstar player
- 26:39Speaker 4: that flunked out of school or had some had some issues?
- 26:43Speaker 4: Have you heard of a starter on any school flunk
- 26:47Speaker 4: out ineligible because of it's great?
- 26:52Speaker 5: I can't remember.
- 26:53Speaker 4: So are they better students than we used to be?
- 26:57Speaker 4: Or is that no longer a thing?
- 27:02Speaker 2: I don't think it's any longer a thing.
- 27:03Speaker 5: I mean it's tied to scholarship eligibility, not pay, right,
- 27:07Speaker 5: I mean.
- 27:08Speaker 2: It's just pay because if you're paying this guy umpteen
- 27:11Speaker 2: hundreds of thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars,
- 27:14Speaker 2: th ain't failing. That can't happen. Okay, But when you
- 27:19Speaker 2: say that, are you saying that because I can't fail?
- 27:23Speaker 2: Or we're not gonna let that. I think it's it's
- 27:26Speaker 2: two ways. It's like you're not gonna let that happen again.
- 27:28Speaker 2: I'm not accusing anybody of improprieties. And what I'm saying
- 27:31Speaker 2: is that you know, you're gonna provide the tutors the
- 27:34Speaker 2: time necessary for that person, an athlete, to make sure
- 27:38Speaker 2: they can get their work done. And like I said,
- 27:41Speaker 2: you have accessibility now where a lot of the informations online,
- 27:45Speaker 2: So I don't have to go search for this information.
- 27:49Speaker 2: I can go chat, GPT, grammarly claude, I can go
- 27:53Speaker 2: to the AI and I can go find it. So
- 27:55Speaker 2: it's not a matter of me like searching for the information,
- 27:58Speaker 2: just choosing which one sounds the.
- 28:00Speaker 5: You're gonna protect your investment.
- 28:02Speaker 4: So so so so are you making the case too
- 28:05Speaker 4: that that social media itself, technology technology, technology technology in
- 28:14Speaker 4: general has taken the pressure off of the school, the coach,
- 28:22Speaker 4: the athlete from even have to even so so that
- 28:27Speaker 4: that's why we don't hear anymore about an athlete who
- 28:31Speaker 4: is struggling academically, because that was a that was somewhat
- 28:34Speaker 4: of a regular thing back in the day.
- 28:36Speaker 2: But even it's I mean, I like, I mean, not.
- 28:39Speaker 4: Even a whisper anything of anybody. And there's got to
- 28:43Speaker 4: be somebody who has to be like me, you know,
- 28:47Speaker 4: And again even but even even outside of even outside
- 28:50Speaker 4: of if I'm the if I'm the athletic department, I'm
- 28:54Speaker 4: going to invest time in tutors.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Like that's a full time job. I'm not like if
- 28:58Speaker 2: I'm paying even if I'm paying you fifty grand or
- 29:01Speaker 2: forty grand a year, you're gonna have a tutor for
- 29:04Speaker 2: these for my athletic department. So you're not failing regardless
- 29:08Speaker 2: because you're gonna have all the help and time. If
- 29:10Speaker 2: you got to miss practice, if you got to do
- 29:11Speaker 2: this to make sure it straight, it's straight. So I think,
- 29:14Speaker 2: and like I said, these are employees now, and as employee,
- 29:17Speaker 2: your responsibility to get your grades if you want to
- 29:19Speaker 2: get the money. So if somebody if you've got six
- 29:21Speaker 2: figures hanging over your head as a nineteen year old,
- 29:24Speaker 2: you ain't flunking tho classes. I can guarantee you.
- 29:27Speaker 5: And the other part is probably during the season, guys,
- 29:30Speaker 5: I mean they probably do all online classes. I mean
- 29:33Speaker 5: I'm sure that that's a that's you know, that's available
- 29:36Speaker 5: to them, and so they just do that and they
- 29:38Speaker 5: can travel to their different games and do their classes online.
- 29:41Speaker 5: I mean, they're they're there for all students. But that's
- 29:43Speaker 5: probably what they do in the you know, during their
- 29:46Speaker 5: athletic season.
- 29:47Speaker 2: All right, cats a kiddings.

- 31:14Speaker 3: Now back to the conversation.
- 31:16Speaker 2: So, if you had a choice of playing sports in
- 31:21Speaker 2: your era.
- 31:23Speaker 4: Versus sports today, would you would you prefer to stay
- 31:30Speaker 4: in your own era or would you rather be intoday's environment?
- 31:36Speaker 4: For me, I would go back. I'd stay home. I'd
- 31:40Speaker 4: go back into the seventies and eighties. I'm staying there
- 31:45Speaker 4: because to me, it was it was clean, it was clear,
- 31:53Speaker 4: and I just I just appreciated the work that you
- 31:56Speaker 4: have to put in, not saying that there's no work
- 31:58Speaker 4: put in today, just saying I just I just liked
- 32:01Speaker 4: how it was and the competition. The man demand competition
- 32:05Speaker 4: and winning it, losing it, accepting it, and keep working.
- 32:09Speaker 5: You like the system.
- 32:10Speaker 4: I like the system. I liked the system of what
- 32:13Speaker 4: it was before. I would not want to be in
- 32:16Speaker 4: today's structure.
- 32:19Speaker 5: That's a tough one because it's a double edged sword.
- 32:20Speaker 5: I mean, I liked the loyalty of athletes during my
- 32:25Speaker 5: time to a school because that school actively recruited them,
- 32:28Speaker 5: gave them a scholarship, an opportunity to go to school.
- 32:32Speaker 5: You know, there were repercussions if you decided to jump ship.
- 32:35Speaker 5: You know, you had to sit out a year. So
- 32:36Speaker 5: that kind of deterred a lot of athletes from jumping
- 32:39Speaker 5: from school to school at that time, and so they
- 32:41Speaker 5: developed relationships. You knew the player's names, you knew who
- 32:45Speaker 5: they were because they'd been at that school for two
- 32:46Speaker 5: or three years playing for your team. Perfect example, the
- 32:50Speaker 5: Marshall team back in the nineties. I mean, when you
- 32:52Speaker 5: had Pennington and all of them together. We've talked about
- 32:54Speaker 5: that before. But the other part of it is, you know,
- 32:57Speaker 5: you didn't get paid, and you know a lot of
- 33:00Speaker 5: these guys aren't going to make it to the next level.
- 33:02Speaker 5: Let's just face it. And so they need to take
- 33:04Speaker 5: the money right now while they can get it, yeah,
- 33:07Speaker 5: to be able to you know, support what kind of
- 33:10Speaker 5: whatever kind of future they have outside of football. So
- 33:13Speaker 5: I mean, it's it's for me. I liked the old
- 33:16Speaker 5: school ways because I'm an old school person, you know.
- 33:18Speaker 5: But today's generation, in today's society, you know, this is
- 33:23Speaker 5: the new normal, and they're being paid and probably rightly so.
- 33:27Speaker 5: These colleges, these universities have cleaned up for years, uh
- 33:31Speaker 5: you know, financially on the play of these athletes, and
- 33:34Speaker 5: they didn't see a dom So I don't know. But
- 33:38Speaker 5: for me, yes, old.
- 33:39Speaker 2: School for me, I would love to be in this generation.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Not it has nothing to do with money. The access
- 33:46Speaker 2: to information, like I would go on such deep dives
- 33:52Speaker 2: that as a quarterback plan in this generation once I
- 33:55Speaker 2: really like understood the mechanics and you know, just how
- 33:59Speaker 2: to operate as a quarterback. If I had this level
- 34:02Speaker 2: of information. Again, I'm not trying to progress into where
- 34:08Speaker 2: I would be, but if I but if I, if
- 34:09Speaker 2: I could just sit on my phone and nerd out
- 34:12Speaker 2: and really do deep dives and understand even beyond what
- 34:17Speaker 2: my offensive coach or whoever is given me trying to
- 34:21Speaker 2: like just understanding on a deep almost molecular, molecular level,
- 34:25Speaker 2: like I would be unstoppable like you wouldn't. I would be.
- 34:28Speaker 5: Access I would.
- 34:31Speaker 2: Access to information at like I said, just on some
- 34:35Speaker 2: quarterback stuff, not only just the training stuff, but just
- 34:37Speaker 2: understanding coverages, understanding offenses, having the ability to go on
- 34:43Speaker 2: my phone to huddle and break down a defense and
- 34:47Speaker 2: look at what that safety is doing for the last
- 34:50Speaker 2: twenty games, Like I would be unstoppable at just at
- 34:55Speaker 2: a brain level on the field.
- 34:57Speaker 4: Okay, to to your point, I have to give credit
- 35:04Speaker 4: to every piece of my success at the next level NFL,
- 35:13Speaker 4: to Pete Carroll, who that the things that you're talking
- 35:17Speaker 4: about online type stuff. He taught us to do film
- 35:23Speaker 4: work somewhat in that same venue. What does the quarter
- 35:29Speaker 4: What is the quarterback's motion movements when he's throwing the
- 35:33Speaker 4: ball versus when he's gonna hand it off.
- 35:37Speaker 2: What is the receiver?
- 35:38Speaker 4: What is he doing when he releases outside? What is
- 35:40Speaker 4: he doing when he releases inside? What are the routes
- 35:43Speaker 4: that he's running? Just and you when you when you
- 35:47Speaker 4: know every time he's gone outside it's a deep ball. Yeah,
- 35:53Speaker 4: then when he goes outside in the game, you know,
- 35:56Speaker 4: it's a deep ball. And and that's the thing, Like,
- 35:59Speaker 4: no matter what level of sports your plane. So even
- 36:02Speaker 4: if you do two D three, once you get to
- 36:04Speaker 4: that level, everybody talent wise is pretty much the same.
- 36:07Speaker 4: The separator is who can process that, who has access
- 36:11Speaker 4: to the inform information, who can process the information?
- 36:14Speaker 2: And I was good at processing. I just didn't understand
- 36:17Speaker 2: how to study it because we you know, we just
- 36:20Speaker 2: didn't have that sort of thing in the nineties. I
- 36:22Speaker 2: didn't understand how to study it from that perspective. But
- 36:25Speaker 2: just having access and realizing how to study that information,
- 36:29Speaker 2: it was nothing to be able to do it.
- 36:31Speaker 4: Basically saying that if you understood who to look at,
- 36:36Speaker 4: who to read to try to figure out what covers.
- 36:38Speaker 2: The nuances, Yes, I mean like okay to your point,
- 36:42Speaker 2: like that, okay, that when they're going cover to their
- 36:45Speaker 2: backfoot is this way when they when they blitzing, they
- 36:47Speaker 2: chest is this way when they you know what I'm saying,
- 36:49Speaker 2: It's like those little things, this is how they gonna
- 36:52Speaker 2: jump discount, this is how they're gonna do that. Like
- 36:54Speaker 2: like understanding those little things and like once you get
- 36:57Speaker 2: into those deep interviews, with like Drew Brees and Brady
- 37:01Speaker 2: and Peyton Manny. They break it down from that level.
- 37:04Speaker 2: It's not necessarily just discoverage that coach. They're looking at
- 37:07Speaker 2: like how you align, and like how you breathe and
- 37:10Speaker 2: how you talking. You know what I'm saying, whether you
- 37:11Speaker 2: look and left or right. They break it down like that.
- 37:14Speaker 2: And if you have that level of information and you
- 37:16Speaker 2: have the ability to process that information, man, you understopped.
- 37:20Speaker 2: You cannot be stopped.
- 37:22Speaker 5: So let me let me throw this at both of
- 37:24Speaker 5: you guys talking about being able to you know, the
- 37:26Speaker 5: the ability that you have now to access all of
- 37:30Speaker 5: the different things with technology as far as what you're saying,
- 37:33Speaker 5: being able to study film, know the different ins and
- 37:36Speaker 5: outs of you know, different play calling and such and players.
- 37:40Speaker 5: Do you think the role of the head coach has
- 37:43Speaker 5: been diminished to a degree because of this access? Do
- 37:46Speaker 5: you feel like now the role of the head coach
- 37:49Speaker 5: is to be not only a good recruiter to bring
- 37:53Speaker 5: in these players, but also more of a motivator rather
- 37:56Speaker 5: than a teacher, because you've got all like you could
- 37:59Speaker 5: be a meeting coach, but have all the access to
- 38:02Speaker 5: all this technology you're talking about to be able to
- 38:04Speaker 5: teach players the fundamentals or whatever it is that you
- 38:07Speaker 5: want to show them film study. But that can take
- 38:10Speaker 5: the place of like a Pete Carroll because now you
- 38:13Speaker 5: can access all of that online. So really what you
- 38:16Speaker 5: want him to do is to be the motivator and
- 38:19Speaker 5: to be able to glue the team together. Do you
- 38:22Speaker 5: understand the question I'm asking.
- 38:24Speaker 2: I'll let you go, but I think it's the exact opposite,
- 38:27Speaker 2: because now, like if you're talking about a high school coach,
- 38:30Speaker 2: you're talking about a college because it's different for the NFL.
- 38:33Speaker 2: But if you're talk about high school and college, number one,
- 38:34Speaker 2: I have to teach you how to watch that and right,
- 38:37Speaker 2: and I have to be so detail oriented that I
- 38:41Speaker 2: have to make sure everything is almost in sync and perfect.
- 38:44Speaker 2: It's sort of like a Nick Saban like, I don't
- 38:47Speaker 2: necessarily have to do as much on that end, but
- 38:50Speaker 2: I want to make sure we line it up correct.
- 38:52Speaker 2: I want to make sure everything is perfect. I want
- 38:54Speaker 2: to make sure that your uniform is perfect. I want
- 38:57Speaker 2: to make everything we do and it's so detailed, because
- 39:00Speaker 2: what can happen is if you do have access to
- 39:03Speaker 2: that information, you can start to think you know everything
- 39:06Speaker 2: and now not that I want to bring you down,
- 39:09Speaker 2: but I want to make sure that we're or just
- 39:12Speaker 2: hard on focus on the details of everything, and the
- 39:16Speaker 2: other end of that, you're almost having to play like, uh,
- 39:19Speaker 2: you know, you have to be like a face of
- 39:21Speaker 2: a program because now I gotta as a head coach,
- 39:24Speaker 2: I have to generate revenue for my program. So I
- 39:27Speaker 2: gotta go do commercials. I gotta go shake hands and
- 39:29Speaker 2: kiss babies. I gotta go be at this gallon and
- 39:31Speaker 2: that galla. So I gotta go be at these things
- 39:33Speaker 2: so I can build relationships to make sure that I
- 39:36Speaker 2: can keep the dollars coming into your program. You got
- 39:39Speaker 2: to be the face of the school. And I think,
- 39:41Speaker 2: and I think, and that's a valid point.
- 39:42Speaker 4: And I think blaming the head coach for the wins
- 39:46Speaker 4: and losses all the time isn't necessarily true because the
- 39:51Speaker 4: expectation that you have of him to do all these things,
- 39:56Speaker 4: they don't necessarily give him the opportunity to be down
- 39:59Speaker 4: on the field doing all the x's and o's and
- 40:02Speaker 4: teaching a position himself.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Like, but you ain't got time to do that? Had time?
- 40:09Speaker 6: You know?
- 40:10Speaker 4: That's where you hires. Yeah, And and unfortunately you may,
- 40:14Speaker 4: and I don't know how, maybe not a good way
- 40:17Speaker 4: to say this. But so when you start hiring that
- 40:20Speaker 4: buddy on your staff and put it trying to put
- 40:25Speaker 4: him somewhere in the secondary because that's easy to coach.
- 40:28Speaker 4: Quote everybody thinks that's easy to coach. Or you put
- 40:32Speaker 4: a buddy at quarterback. You put your buddy at quarterback.
- 40:36Speaker 4: So now Hollis doesn't get all the true information that
- 40:41Speaker 4: he could get if it was actually somebody who has
- 40:43Speaker 4: studied quarterback, who maybe even played quarterback.
- 40:47Speaker 2: That you can't do that. You can't do that now
- 40:50Speaker 2: that there's too much money at play. And look at
- 40:55Speaker 2: and at the other end, he was able to get
- 40:57Speaker 2: to Pier State and look at that buyout.
- 41:00Speaker 5: Yeah he's.
- 41:06Speaker 2: I'm alright, I'm I'm cool. Yeah, I'm sad, but he's
- 41:10Speaker 2: not in the poor line Jim bow Fisher what.
- 41:15Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, you ain't got time.
- 41:19Speaker 2: I ain't got it, ain't nobody. But it's too much
- 41:20Speaker 2: money on the line.
- 41:22Speaker 5: Well, and I think too, like we're talking about the
- 41:24Speaker 5: money and everything with these coaches. I think the lifeline
- 41:29Speaker 5: for if you're at a program like Penn State or
- 41:32Speaker 5: Alabama or you know, uh, you U s C or
- 41:35Speaker 5: someone like that. Your lifeline is definitely not as long
- 41:39Speaker 5: as a rich Rod at w BU. At least it
- 41:41Speaker 5: shouldn't be, because you have access to probably the best
- 41:45Speaker 5: players in the nation with n IL funds, with your alumni,
- 41:49Speaker 5: with your everything, your facilities. You're not starting from scratch
- 41:53Speaker 5: every year. You know, you're not having to to to
- 41:56Speaker 5: you know, you're not losing all eighty players in one year.
- 41:58Speaker 5: At Penn State. You may lose some, but not compared
- 42:02Speaker 5: to like a Marshall or WU. So those guys need
- 42:05Speaker 5: a little bit longer of a lifeline before we start
- 42:07Speaker 5: putting them in hot seats. In my opinion, that's a
- 42:09Speaker 5: good point.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good point. And so I'm gonna ask
- 42:12Speaker 2: you this put.
- 42:13Speaker 5: You on boy Harriet.
- 42:15Speaker 2: So should the coaches have guaranteed contracts? Well, I think
- 42:22Speaker 2: that the buyout sort of acts as that, right, I mean,
- 42:25Speaker 2: it's not like a you know, I don't think anybody.
- 42:28Speaker 2: I ain't gonna say anybody, but I don't know if
- 42:29Speaker 2: we need guaranteed quote unquote contracts when you have a
- 42:32Speaker 2: buy out at the end of it. Okay, But okay,
- 42:34Speaker 2: so you can get compensated because those jobs aren't plentiful.
- 42:37Speaker 2: So let's just put you at West Virginia State, right,
- 42:39Speaker 2: that's your school.
- 42:40Speaker 4: You love that school, You're you're the head coach of
- 42:43Speaker 4: that school. Wouldn't it be nice because you're if you
- 42:49Speaker 4: go there, You're not necessarily going there quote for the money,
- 42:53Speaker 4: You're going there because it's your school, you love it,
- 42:55Speaker 4: blah blah blah blah. So wouldn't it be nice to
- 43:01Speaker 4: think that you know for a fact you're gonna get
- 43:04Speaker 4: you four years in there.
- 43:05Speaker 2: I mean, I would say to Lisa's point, I mean,
- 43:08Speaker 2: if you're going to a school like yeah, yeah, maybe yeah,
- 43:11Speaker 2: I mean I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to that. I'm
- 43:14Speaker 2: thinking when you ask the question, I'm thinking more like
- 43:16Speaker 2: the bigger programs. But I mean, if you're going to
- 43:19Speaker 2: a smaller program than yeah, I mean, that's not necessarily
- 43:21Speaker 2: a bad thing. But again, I can't guarantee you a
- 43:24Speaker 2: contract if I'm at that smaller school, because if something
- 43:27Speaker 2: egregious happens or well, I'm getting sure that'd be probably
- 43:31Speaker 2: within the content. But if something happens, even if it's
- 43:33Speaker 2: not egregious, even if it doesn't quote on break contract,
- 43:36Speaker 2: that I don't like that's a fireable offense. Then now
- 43:39Speaker 2: I owe you this rest of this year's and I
- 43:41Speaker 2: maybe can't afford to take the hit and hire a
- 43:43Speaker 2: new coast, so financially it could pit me in a
- 43:45Speaker 2: buying potentially, is what I'm saying.
- 43:47Speaker 4: If I'm the school, see I'm thinking some of these
- 43:49Speaker 4: bigger schools, when you're talking about these notable named coaches,
- 43:56Speaker 4: I could easily see we're gonna guarantee you four years
- 44:01Speaker 4: to give you an opportunity to turn around, to turn
- 44:03Speaker 4: the program around.
- 44:04Speaker 2: You can't turn the program around there a couple of years.
- 44:06Speaker 5: I think it's still happening do you know think it's
- 44:08Speaker 5: happening now when.
- 44:08Speaker 4: You're not when coaches not when coaches has guaranteed contracts
- 44:12Speaker 4: per se. And I think, I think when you start
- 44:14Speaker 4: talking about it, when you start talking about a coach
- 44:16Speaker 4: who you're you're you're talking about firing in two years,
- 44:20Speaker 4: after two years, after three years, how many years do
- 44:24Speaker 4: you think it's gonna take to rebuild a team.
- 44:27Speaker 2: But now I mean again with the transfer port on
- 44:30Speaker 2: all that, that maybe goes from four years to two
- 44:33Speaker 2: years because now I.
- 44:34Speaker 4: Can get those no experience. I'm gonna challenge you on this. Okay,
- 44:39Speaker 4: so you you you you've you've got a bad program.
- 44:43Speaker 4: You haven't really won what may what makes you think
- 44:46Speaker 4: that you can call me from w b U to come.
- 44:50Speaker 2: To State because maybe I can offer you not State.
- 44:54Speaker 2: No said that ain't.
- 45:00Speaker 4: Work, but I thought you talking about like a okay, okay,
- 45:04Speaker 4: So so I can be at State and and now
- 45:08Speaker 4: I'm gonna go to WVU because WU wants me because
- 45:12Speaker 4: of however good I think I had been at wes
- 45:16Speaker 4: Frod State. How's do you think that's that's gonna that's
- 45:19Speaker 4: a possibility.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Yeah, because if you got the money, if I if
- 45:22Speaker 2: I ain't making no money at school A, and I'm
- 45:25Speaker 2: going to school B, and I can make a bigger bag.
- 45:27Speaker 2: To Lisa's point, I don't know.
- 45:30Speaker 5: Go ahead, no, No, I was just gonna make a point
- 45:33Speaker 5: about with the portal, I think it's going to be
- 45:35Speaker 5: really difficult for those types of coaches that are at
- 45:38Speaker 5: that level to climb the ladder, so to speak. Because
- 45:41Speaker 5: let's just say, you know they're a great coach and
- 45:43Speaker 5: they have a winning season. What's going to happen next year?
- 45:46Speaker 5: Here comes the big schools are going to sweep in
- 45:47Speaker 5: and take your your best players, and so you had
- 45:50Speaker 5: that one winning season and next year you might you know,
- 45:53Speaker 5: lay an egg because you've got brand new kids coming in.
- 45:55Speaker 5: So it's gonna be hard for them to show consistent
- 45:58Speaker 5: winning abilities to be able to go from point you know,
- 46:02Speaker 5: C to point A because of the of you know,
- 46:06Speaker 5: just the realities of money and players. Does that make sense?
- 46:10Speaker 2: You take that?
- 46:10Speaker 4: You take the top twenty schools, right, coaches, Yeah, you
- 46:15Speaker 4: take the top twenty schools, the bottom twenty. Every great
- 46:19Speaker 4: player on the bottom twenty. Whole goal is to get
- 46:24Speaker 4: to the top twenty exactly, and so every other year,
- 46:28Speaker 4: every I'm gonna have to find another one of a
- 46:32Speaker 4: potential top twenty players.
- 46:34Speaker 2: I think it's an art in that too, And it's
- 46:36Speaker 2: like you could take those diamonds in the rough because
- 46:39Speaker 2: I think what's happening now we're seeing it in college
- 46:42Speaker 2: I'd say sports, is that you're seeing a lot more
- 46:45Speaker 2: parody because now Alabama can't stack players. Usc they're not
- 46:50Speaker 2: stacking players. Ohio State you don't get to stack players.
- 46:53Speaker 2: So now I can go and I may be able
- 46:55Speaker 2: to find that third stream running back at Ohio State
- 46:58Speaker 2: or who are there, and I can convince him to
- 47:01Speaker 2: come down maybe for a year or two. So I
- 47:03Speaker 2: think that again, it's gonna be just like it was
- 47:05Speaker 2: an art in recruiting high school kids. It's an art
- 47:08Speaker 2: in recruiting that trend. Again, I don't know that art,
- 47:10Speaker 2: but I'm saying it's an art and doing that too.
- 47:12Speaker 2: So I'm thinking, even if I lose said players, I
- 47:15Speaker 2: can start to replenish this once I understand what I'm doing.
- 47:18Speaker 2: And if I'm a school with a reputation that I
- 47:21Speaker 2: get guys up. Then So if I'm a school like
- 47:24Speaker 2: if I'm State for example, and my reputation is that
- 47:27Speaker 2: after two years with me, then I got guys going
- 47:29Speaker 2: Power five, then that's recruiting to it. That's recruit people.
- 47:33Speaker 2: So I take notice of that. So it's you know, and.
- 47:36Speaker 4: Isn't that a crazy thought process though, that you're that
- 47:39Speaker 4: you're recruiting trick If you want to say that is.
- 47:45Speaker 5: Come here to a different school.
- 47:47Speaker 4: I can get you to a good another school. I mean,
- 47:49Speaker 4: that's give me two years. What it is, give me
- 47:52Speaker 4: two years at the quarterback, and I guarantee you I
- 47:55Speaker 4: can get you somewhere if you do this.
- 47:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that again, that could be something. I'm
- 47:59Speaker 2: not saying this is specifically, but you know, it's one
- 48:02Speaker 2: of them things that you know.
- 48:03Speaker 5: Whole landscape of college football is different, Like it's hard
- 48:07Speaker 5: to wrap your mind around the way things were versus
- 48:10Speaker 5: the way they are now. Because even your coaching tactics,
- 48:14Speaker 5: like what holis same here, which makes total sense is
- 48:17Speaker 5: to get kids there because I can get you to Alabama.
- 48:20Speaker 5: I can get you, you know, not to the NFL
- 48:23Speaker 5: in Alabama, I can get you to Yeah. So I
- 48:25Speaker 5: mean it's crazy because it used to be I could
- 48:27Speaker 5: get you in the draft. Now it's I'll get you
- 48:29Speaker 5: to a better school.
- 48:30Speaker 4: As much as I hate to admit this, that's probably
- 48:33Speaker 4: the smartest thing that is. It fired, I'll give you
- 48:37Speaker 4: another weight, but that is legitimately the.
- 48:42Speaker 5: Most It's a good point.
- 48:43Speaker 4: That is the best point and justification of why I
- 48:48Speaker 4: would work that way.
- 48:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it could. I'm not I'm not even
- 48:51Speaker 2: saying it's the best way. I'm just saying, like it's
- 48:53Speaker 2: it's a way to do it. So I just quick,
- 48:55Speaker 2: I know we're about to how much, but I wanted
- 49:00Speaker 2: to give a shout out. I don't know if you
- 49:02Speaker 2: guys watched the WNBA Finals last weekend. Asia Wilson, She's
- 49:06Speaker 2: had probably the greatest season and I say almost basketball.
- 49:12Speaker 2: She not only did they win the championship, she was
- 49:15Speaker 2: the MVP of the league, Defensive Player of the Year
- 49:19Speaker 2: in finals MVP, and I think she led the league
- 49:22Speaker 2: in points, blocks and maybe another stat. So so she
- 49:27Speaker 2: just had like one of the greatest seasons. And if
- 49:30Speaker 2: you watch the finals, I mean, she was just phenomenal
- 49:33Speaker 2: and it was just it was a pleasure to watch.
- 49:35Speaker 2: When we talk about like the old school news school
- 49:37Speaker 2: we talked about, I'm definitely team old school when it
- 49:40Speaker 2: comes to basketball, Like I hate modern basketball. It's not
- 49:43Speaker 2: fun to watch. It's just guys running up and down
- 49:46Speaker 2: the court, playing out of position. And to see somebody
- 49:49Speaker 2: a big quote unquote with her back to the basket
- 49:52Speaker 2: doing post moves, making shots, going up under and playing
- 49:56Speaker 2: defense body control, she is phenomenal, know to watch MVP. Yeah, yeah,
- 50:04Speaker 2: so phenomenal.
- 50:05Speaker 4: Is there is Can men's basketball impact women's basketball to
- 50:12Speaker 4: the degree of mocking it becoming that way?
- 50:17Speaker 2: Do you think it is about?
- 50:19Speaker 4: Because to your point, to your point, I think if
- 50:24Speaker 4: I were going to watch a basketball game, it would
- 50:26Speaker 4: be a w NBA.
- 50:27Speaker 2: Yeah, And to me, she's the best player in the world.
- 50:29Speaker 2: And when I said that, I think people were talking
- 50:31Speaker 2: about like women. I mean, she's the best player in
- 50:33Speaker 2: the world. She's the best basketball player on the planet
- 50:35Speaker 2: right now, men, women, And I would say that with yeah,
- 50:40Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. Not to say she's going
- 50:41Speaker 2: to go out there and she can beat man. I'm
- 50:43Speaker 2: not saying that, but I'm saying if in her respective
- 50:46Speaker 2: basketball sport and league versus what I'm looking at from
- 50:50Speaker 2: she is the absolute best player on the planet to
- 50:53Speaker 2: watch right now.
- 50:54Speaker 4: Okay, So if you can say that, and I don't
- 50:57Speaker 4: have a problem with it.
- 50:59Speaker 2: She's playing her position old school, yeah, I mean, and you.
- 51:03Speaker 4: Know, she's playing the big man down load, fundamental.
- 51:08Speaker 2: Fundamentals of what we used to know. She's like Tim Duncan.
- 51:11Speaker 2: If I had to compare her to somebody and she
- 51:13Speaker 2: could go she can go to the three, she pop
- 51:15Speaker 2: it from there. But she got soft touch around twenty
- 51:18Speaker 2: feet and like I said, even the block shots, think
- 51:20Speaker 2: she had like average like five or six block shots
- 51:23Speaker 2: during the championship game a series, but even like they
- 51:26Speaker 2: was noting like her body control where she doesn't foul
- 51:29Speaker 2: when she's blocking because she understands body control, so she's
- 51:32Speaker 2: not putting her body on you. She's actually playing the ball.
- 51:35Speaker 2: So I'm telling you, it's just it's phenomenal. Yeah.
- 51:39Speaker 4: See, that's why that's why I don't really care for
- 51:43Speaker 4: men's basketball, because it's really just everybody shooting past the
- 51:46Speaker 4: yards and yeah, it's not fun.
- 51:50Speaker 2: It's just it's not fun.
- 51:52Speaker 4: It's not it's not it's not entertaining enough to keep you.
- 51:57Speaker 5: Maybe the finals. I do watch the final regular season.
- 52:02Speaker 4: And the thing about the finals though, is, to me,
- 52:05Speaker 4: you got two great teams playing great all great players.
- 52:09Speaker 4: But in the game itself, it still doesn't it still
- 52:13Speaker 4: doesn't reflect the the manner in which we think.
- 52:18Speaker 2: And again we're all over that's what I'm saying. It's like,
- 52:21Speaker 2: it just doesn't look like that. It's just a bunch
- 52:23Speaker 2: of folks throwing up three. And I would definitely give
- 52:25Speaker 2: my age job because I'm just I'm stuck on that
- 52:27Speaker 2: because it's just I think, to me, it's like, you know,
- 52:30Speaker 2: the women's game is American basketball. That's what I look at,
- 52:33Speaker 2: and I think the NBA is coming euro basketball and
- 52:36Speaker 2: it's like I said, when you got seven five guys popping.
- 52:40Speaker 2: You know, ten and fifteen three is a game. It's
- 52:42Speaker 2: just like, man, get to the post man, Like you
- 52:44Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, I couldn't. It's just like I
- 52:46Speaker 2: want to see Shack. I want to see Patrick Ewing,
- 52:49Speaker 2: I want to see Dave Rod. I want to see
- 52:50Speaker 2: Tim Duncan shock hurt.
- 52:52Speaker 5: Did I hear that somewhere that he's not going to
- 52:54Speaker 5: start the season or something like that? Okay? Maybe not? Maybe, Okay, Sorry.
- 53:03Speaker 5: Thinking about Caitlyn.
- 53:06Speaker 4: And see being a player who couldn't shoot and was
- 53:10Speaker 4: always under the basket, I understood my role, you know
- 53:14Speaker 4: what I'm saying, Like I understood somebody threw many ball.
- 53:17Speaker 4: My first thoughts should be who am I throwing it to?
- 53:21Speaker 4: And and and in that, I think there are there
- 53:26Speaker 4: are a ton of players who fit that description who
- 53:30Speaker 4: now because of the way the game is, but they're
- 53:33Speaker 4: not down there.
- 53:33Speaker 2: But I think it's just the roles of hoop has
- 53:37Speaker 2: just changed. It's it's not like I said, and this
- 53:40Speaker 2: it is what it is, and some people love it.
- 53:43Speaker 2: It's just if you change it to me.
- 53:45Speaker 4: If you pass it to me, nobody the other four
- 53:48Speaker 4: people are not sure they gonna get the ball back.
- 53:50Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying, because once that passes there,
- 53:54Speaker 4: I can choot from anywhere. And it's okay.
- 53:56Speaker 2: Like I said, it's just I ain't even hating on it.
- 53:58Speaker 2: It just ain't for me. It's just.
- 54:02Speaker 4: All right, Well, anybody, I think we're gonna run out
- 54:05Speaker 4: of time, But we're.
- 54:06Speaker 2: Not talking about the coach hitting the player. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 54:10Speaker 2: thank you, thank you.
- 54:12Speaker 5: So when did that happen? That was dropped the ball?
- 54:15Speaker 2: Yep?
- 54:16Speaker 5: So he was upset with him, right, so go ahead.
- 54:19Speaker 2: Well I don't think, well, hold on, this set it
- 54:23Speaker 2: up so a player it was. It's not this week,
- 54:25Speaker 2: but last week for the Falcons. He's running to us down.
- 54:28Speaker 2: He's actually a beautiful seventy five yard run up the gut,
- 54:31Speaker 2: and before he gets to the end zone, he drops
- 54:33Speaker 2: the ball, comes to the sidelines. Coaches, you know, remin
- 54:36Speaker 2: him out and the coach strikes him in the gut
- 54:39Speaker 2: about two to three times, and the coach in yeah.
- 54:42Speaker 5: It was that severe.
- 54:43Speaker 2: Yeah, he hit him two or three times. And then
- 54:45Speaker 2: the coach ends up getting fined one hundred thousand dollars.
- 54:47Speaker 4: So okay, so one hundred thousand dollars, okay, sounds like
- 54:53Speaker 4: a lot for a coach.
- 54:54Speaker 2: For a coach, it sounds like a lot.
- 54:57Speaker 4: But for every player who saw it, it's never gonna
- 55:03Speaker 4: get past it. I think, so never gonna get past it.
- 55:08Speaker 4: You can lose your team for a call that you
- 55:11Speaker 4: make on the feet, You can lose your you can
- 55:16Speaker 4: lose the team for a whole lot of other reasons
- 55:20Speaker 4: more so.
- 55:23Speaker 2: Than what he did. Yeah, when you.
- 55:25Speaker 4: Start, because because you know, the very first thing you're
- 55:29Speaker 4: gonna say, very first thing I'm gonna say, very first
- 55:31Speaker 4: thing list is gonna say when we saw it, it's oh,
- 55:35Speaker 4: he better never put his hand on me.
- 55:37Speaker 2: But but so so as a former NFL player, like
- 55:41Speaker 2: when you saw that, kind of.
- 55:43Speaker 4: Just what went through your mind. That could have never
- 55:46Speaker 4: happened back in the day. But but okay, that's my
- 55:49Speaker 4: point though, So you know, but y'all don't think that happened.
- 55:53Speaker 4: People laid hands on people back in the day. There
- 55:55Speaker 4: was grabbing, There was grabbing, face mask cussing you out,
- 55:59Speaker 4: There was all that you ain't pushing me like a kid,
- 56:03Speaker 4: Well he.
- 56:05Speaker 2: You ain't like you.
- 56:08Speaker 4: Yeah, nobody created like a a a situation that looked
- 56:13Speaker 4: like you're starting an altercation Okay, I see what you're saying.
- 56:17Speaker 2: It was like within the football. It was all in
- 56:21Speaker 2: the football realm, right. You know, you've used to get
- 56:24Speaker 2: cussed out.
- 56:25Speaker 4: You're used to somebody up in your face cussing you out,
- 56:28Speaker 4: grab you by your shoulder pads.
- 56:30Speaker 2: That that that's true. That's actually good.
- 56:33Speaker 4: You're used to that. But you ain't pushing me.
- 56:38Speaker 2: It wasn't a push. It was a strike.
- 56:39Speaker 4: Well, well you can't. You can't push me. You can't
- 56:41Speaker 4: strike me. You can't you can't swing at.
- 56:44Speaker 5: Me because he dropped the ball right but before he
- 56:49Speaker 5: got to the goal line, right, And.
- 56:51Speaker 4: I understand that's a horrible situation. You know that's a
- 56:55Speaker 4: horrible situation.
- 56:56Speaker 5: Wasn't following the letters and logos saying is if you
- 56:59Speaker 5: go that? Yeah?
- 57:02Speaker 2: But I say when I when I looked at it, though,
- 57:04Speaker 2: like when I first saw it, I almost didn't see
- 57:07Speaker 2: a problem with it, because again, in the era football
- 57:10Speaker 2: that I played in, not that a coach would, you know,
- 57:13Speaker 2: gut punch you, but you would get hands laid on,
- 57:17Speaker 2: like whether you're grabbing little formarm, little chest bud. It
- 57:20Speaker 2: looked but after I thought about it, my mind kind
- 57:25Speaker 2: of went to if somebody gut punched you, and then
- 57:28Speaker 2: that player reacts just out of a natural reaction, then
- 57:32Speaker 2: we're having a different conversation. So I don't think you
- 57:35Speaker 2: can do and particularly like NFL, you can't do that
- 57:37Speaker 2: with grown men.
- 57:38Speaker 4: Imagine doing that the Lawrence Taylor Well, yeah, you know
- 57:42Speaker 4: what I'm saying. I mean, I mean there are I
- 57:45Speaker 4: mean just when I think about it, I'm thinking about, like,
- 57:48Speaker 4: you have to know what player that you're going to
- 57:50Speaker 4: do that too, because if you if you're walking down
- 57:55Speaker 4: a sideline, there's some dudes that Keith Millard but in
- 57:59Speaker 4: my played, you know, defensive Player of the year blah
- 58:03Speaker 4: blah blah blah.
- 58:05Speaker 2: But it's crazy, you're not thinking about putting hands on him.
- 58:09Speaker 2: So you saying like it was it was it was
- 58:11Speaker 2: more intentional about who he did that.
- 58:15Speaker 4: I think I think he thought about I think he
- 58:17Speaker 4: had to have thought about.
- 58:18Speaker 2: It because.
- 58:21Speaker 4: There's some players on your team. When it's when it
- 58:23Speaker 4: comes to football, yeah, I can think even a state
- 58:27Speaker 4: I know exactly exactly, like I ain't going up to
- 58:31Speaker 4: Charles Smith and slap him across the face with his helmet.
- 58:38Speaker 4: You ain't doing that because you're you're creating a situation
- 58:43Speaker 4: that is toxic.
- 58:45Speaker 2: Toxic because other players see it.
- 58:49Speaker 4: And and the first thing you're going to say, hollis
- 58:51Speaker 4: when you see me hit somebody else, Oh, he better
- 58:54Speaker 4: never hit it.
- 58:55Speaker 2: But let me ask this. Do you do you think
- 58:58Speaker 2: the sort of the punishment fit the crime. Do you
- 59:00Speaker 2: think one hundred thousand dollars five coach was enough? No?
- 59:04Speaker 5: No, you don't think it was enough.
- 59:06Speaker 2: No? No, I personally thought he should.
- 59:10Speaker 5: Yeah, he didn't have a suspension. I should have been
- 59:13Speaker 5: a company with a suspension for at least one game.
- 59:16Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what I thought. I'm I'm not even comfortable
- 59:21Speaker 4: in one game. I mean because I think here, here's
- 59:24Speaker 4: the thing.
- 59:25Speaker 2: I think this is.
- 59:25Speaker 4: Too far out of Because what if I'm a coach
- 59:29Speaker 4: on the sideline, I'm making seven eight million dollars, that
- 59:34Speaker 4: one hundred thousand ain't gonna do nothing to me.
- 59:36Speaker 2: So I can slap you the next time.
- 59:39Speaker 5: You'll learn your lesson from that.
- 59:41Speaker 2: Yeah, because that's scary.
- 59:42Speaker 4: But if that dude would have reacted hurt out, I
- 59:47Speaker 4: would see that again. I don't think back in the day,
- 59:51Speaker 4: I don't know. If you take every starting team across
- 59:55Speaker 4: the league, offensive defense, especially special teams, okay, and say
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: you can slap one of those guys that are out there,
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: one of the eleven, on any one of your starting teams,
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: that there's not gonna be something.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: The old school they y'all old school coaches. There was
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: some they didn't You told that, Yes, no they didn't.
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: My legs broke. Get back out there.
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: But but it ain't coming to them putting hands on
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: you like that again, grab grabbing your face, masks and
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: stuff like that.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: All that stuff was all good, cussing you out all that.
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: What do you think the proper should have been? I
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: think it should have been. My thing is.
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: Fire that fire done done. Dang, let somebody else pick
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: you up, because I'm gonna show him.
- 1:00:52Speaker 5: We've pushed mister Lee's button.
- 1:00:53Speaker 7: Here.
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: Let me ask this, what's the most important thing to you?
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: Your team or your coach. I mean, it's a team.
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: So if a if a team did, if a player
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: did something like that.
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: Let's say if this this a flippan, let's say he
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: slapped the coach, he'd be gone.
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: Yeah, that's true, he wouldn't even he.
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: Wouldn't even got be some some games suspended, absolutely, and
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: I say multiple games and a game one.
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: Hundred thousand or no, not just one hundred thousand dollars.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean because.
- 1:01:28Speaker 5: If it was a repeated fans, I don't know. I mean,
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: I think everybody gets caught up in the moment. There's
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: so much emotion in the game of football. I'm not
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: saying that.
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: What does a coach tell you, coach got you cannot
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: You cannot let your emotions dictate what you do.
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: Man. I just that's I mean, I and I feel
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: because I ain't really look at it from that perspective
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: as far as losing the locker room, but I mean,
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: I don't know. All in our I think it was light.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: He should have definitely been gone a game. I would
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: definitely say that at least leave at least you know,
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: It's like I just it's just scary to think about
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: if that player just would have naturally reacted. You know
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: what I'm saying, You don't know what would have happened. Yeah,
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: because I don't.
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: Again, how would you, like, like, how are you going
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: to react to that?
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: It's different because, like I said, again, I told you,
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: like when I first seen it, I didn't really I
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: had a big deal because not that a coach has
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: ever done that to me, But a coach has gotten physical,
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, because I'm from that last
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: probably that last era of football where coaches did that. Yeah,
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. So I didn't necessarily like
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: comprehend it in that way. But now that I sit
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: back and thought about, like again, to your point, that
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: wasn't a quote unquote football move. That was a you know,
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: it was.
- 1:02:45Speaker 5: The context of it because you've seen players come off
- 1:02:48Speaker 5: the field that's that's had a really big, great play
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: and they kind of the coaches push at their chest,
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: you know, you like other players do. So it was
- 1:02:55Speaker 5: the whole context of it. And but by the way,
- 1:02:59Speaker 5: I wanted to correct what I said earlier when I said, Shack,
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: we've been talking to old school. You guys looked at
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: me like I was crazy. It's been a long day,
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: And I actually meant Lebron James. I apologize to the
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: audience listening because I had a total brain moment, So
- 1:03:17Speaker 5: I don't know I.
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: Did.
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: I just say shot.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: Went well.
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: I appreciate that, but I always call out my mistakes,
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: so oh well, we'll have those.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: All right. Well, let's get out I'm.
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: Fired again, righted again.
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: Get with Hollis and you'll getting together and.
