- Lucas: Okay, welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna! Ep 173, can you believe it? We're getting closer to 200. Lucas: I know, right? And today, I thought we'd do something a little different. Since we just talked about a bunch of adjectives, let's look at a real-world situation where you'd use some of them. Festive season! Luna: Oh, that's a great idea! Like, Hari Raya Aidilfitri? That's a huge celebration in Malaysia. Lucas: Exactly. And the most important phrase to know is: Selamat Hari Raya. It means 'Happy Eid' or 'Happy celebration day'. Luna: Selamat Hari Raya. I know 'selamat' from 'selamat pagi' and 'selamat jalan'. Lucas: That's right! 'Selamat' means 'safe' or 'peaceful', so it's like wishing someone a peaceful celebration. Let's say it together slowly: se la mat Ha-ri Ra-ya. Luna: Selamat Hari Raya. Lucas: Perfect! Now, something you'll also hear is: Maaf zahir dan batin. This is a traditional phrase asking for forgiveness, both outwardly and inwardly. Luna: Wow, that's deep. Maaf zahir dan batin. Can you break that down? Lucas: Sure. 'Maaf' means 'forgive' or 'sorry'. 'Zahir' means 'physical' or 'outward', 'batin' means 'spiritual' or 'inward'. So it's like 'Forgive me for any wrongs, seen and unseen'. Luna: Oh, that's beautiful. Maaf zahir dan batin. Let me try: Maaf zahir dan batin. Lucas: That's really good, Luna. And you can also just say: Saya minta maaf. That's 'I ask for forgiveness'. Luna: Saya minta maaf. That's similar to 'I'm sorry' right? We learned 'minta' like 'minta tolong'. Lucas: Exactly! 'Minta' means 'to ask', 'maaf' is 'forgiveness'. So literally 'I ask forgiveness'. Good job. Luna: So if I meet someone during Hari Raya, I can say: Selamat Hari Raya, maaf zahir dan batin. Lucas: Yes! And they'll probably say it back to you. Or you could say: Selamat berhari raya, which is like 'Happy celebration days'. Let's practice that one too. Luna: Selamat berhari raya. Lucas: Nice. So you have a few options. Let's do a mini scene. Imagine I'm your neighbour during Hari Raya. Luna: Okay! So I'd knock on your door and say: Selamat Hari Raya, Lucas! Maaf zahir dan batin. Lucas: And I'd reply: Selamat Hari Raya juga! Maaf zahir dan batin. Welcome in! Luna: Aww, that's so sweet. I love how Malay culture has this whole tradition of asking forgiveness. Lucas: It's really meaningful. And you know, if Fexingo has been helping you connect with Malay culture and learn the language, you can support the show so we can keep making these episodes. Luna: Yeah, it's totally optional, but if you find yourself using 'Selamat Hari Raya' or 'maaf zahir dan batin' this festive season, and you want to say thanks, you can buy us a coffee. Lucas: Exactly. Just go to buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. That's spelled out: buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. No pressure at all, we're just grateful you're here. Luna: Alright, back to practice! So Lucas, can I use 'Selamat berhari raya' on the last day of Hari Raya? Lucas: Actually, you can use it anytime during the month of Syawal, which is the month after Ramadan. It's like saying 'Happy celebration days'. Luna: Got it. Selamat berhari raya. Lucas: Great. So let's recap all four phrases we learned today: Selamat Hari Raya. Luna: Maaf zahir dan batin. Lucas: Saya minta maaf. Luna: And Selamat berhari raya. Lucas: Excellent. Now you're ready to celebrate with Malay friends. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time. Luna: Selamat berhari raya, everyone!
