- 0:00Speaker 1: Who would you like me to start with? Travis Burke? Daddy,
- 0:03Speaker 1: Travis Burke, No, no, Wow? What about what I meant
- 0:07Speaker 1: when I met? I thought we were talking about Graham? Okay,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Travis what wow? Freudian slip there. Hey everyone, welcome to
- 0:32Speaker 1: Girls Gone Hallmark, a Hallmark review podcast. I'm Megan, I'm Wendy,
- 0:37Speaker 1: and today we're kicking off our Girls Gone Hallmark summer
- 0:39Speaker 1: series where we're watching and reviewing fan favorite movies. Today
- 0:43Speaker 1: we're reviewing the Mystery one oh one pilot, which originally
- 0:47Speaker 1: aired on January twenty seventh, twenty nineteen. If you want
- 0:51Speaker 1: to catch up with us outside of the podcast, you
- 0:54Speaker 1: can follow us on Instagram where we are Girls Gone
- 0:56Speaker 1: Hallmark and Megan and Wendy.
- 0:59Speaker 2: You can also up into our Facebook group Girls Gone Hallmark.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Just lots of fun over there, or you can send
- 1:05Speaker 2: us an email Megan and Wendy at gmail dot com,
- 1:08Speaker 2: or jump into our dms on Instagram, which Megan already mentioned,
- 1:12Speaker 2: Girls Gone Hallmark.
- 1:13Speaker 1: If you want to see the full lineup of movies
- 1:16Speaker 1: that will be watching so you can watch them ahead
- 1:18Speaker 1: of our reviews, that schedule is available in our show
- 1:21Speaker 1: notes as well as on our website, which is where
- 1:23Speaker 1: our show notes live Megan and Wendy dot com. We
- 1:26Speaker 1: have the summer planned out. All of these movies are
- 1:28Speaker 1: available on the Hallmark Movies Now app so for easy watching.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Yeah. I wish they were paying us to promote that.
- 1:39Speaker 2: They don't have all the new movies, but they have
- 1:41Speaker 2: so many of the old movies. Every movie we wanted
- 1:43Speaker 2: to review was there.
- 1:44Speaker 1: So if you just love Hallmark, it's not a bad get.
- 1:47Speaker 2: I will tell you, though, I find their interface a
- 1:50Speaker 2: little bit sloppy because when I go to search Mystery
- 1:53Speaker 2: one oh one, it doesn't come up. I agree, I
- 1:57Speaker 2: have to search Christopher Polaha.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Oh I just searched Mystery and then I had to
- 2:02Speaker 1: scroll down through eight hundred movies because there's so many
- 2:05Speaker 1: of them.
- 2:06Speaker 2: What the heck?
- 2:07Speaker 1: Why is it like that? That was bizarre? I agree.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Let's talk some news and notes for Mystery one on one.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Mystery one on one has a Wikipedia page. Thank you
- 2:15Speaker 1: to the hardworking folks who have put that together. And
- 2:18Speaker 1: according to that page, the movie we're reviewing today is
- 2:20Speaker 1: the first in a series of seven. I knew there
- 2:23Speaker 1: was a series, I didn't know how many there were
- 2:25Speaker 1: Prior to watching this movie and the last movie did
- 2:28Speaker 1: air in twenty twenty one. So between January twenty seventh,
- 2:32Speaker 1: twenty nineteen, and twenty twenty one, they produced seven movies.
- 2:37Speaker 1: That's in the Mystery.
- 2:38Speaker 2: One on one franchise a lot of movies.
- 2:40Speaker 1: It is a lot of movies. Chris Rhpaulaha did give
- 2:43Speaker 1: an interview with Ess Jared earlier this year in regards
- 2:46Speaker 1: to an eighth installment, and he said, we love telling
- 2:49Speaker 1: those stories and whatever the network decides, it's inconclusive. He adds,
- 2:54Speaker 1: there's always been conversation about number eight, but there's no
- 2:57Speaker 1: like official word. And I did see some commentary from
- 3:02Speaker 1: fans online saying you can't leave us hanging like that
- 3:04Speaker 1: in movie seven.
- 3:05Speaker 2: So I don't know what happens, but apparently it's a
- 3:08Speaker 2: big old cliffhanger.
- 3:10Speaker 1: The fate of Amian Trass hangs in the balance.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't like when series do that, they leave
- 3:16Speaker 2: a big cliffhanger like that and then don't wrap it up.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I need a nice bow on the end of it.
- 3:21Speaker 1: You know, did you ever watch the television series Jack
- 3:23Speaker 1: and Jill.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Oh, that's a real throwback, Megan. I think it was
- 3:29Speaker 2: only on one season. It was sort Amanda Pete, Yes,
- 3:33Speaker 2: I did watch it. It was on that left a major cliffhanger.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Oh god, you still remember, I don't remember. I do.
- 3:39Speaker 1: It has stuck.
- 3:39Speaker 2: You know.
- 3:40Speaker 1: You have those shows that you just wish they would
- 3:42Speaker 1: come back for a second season, just to wrap things up.
- 3:45Speaker 1: That's the one. I felt very heartbroken by the loss
- 3:49Speaker 1: of that show.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I always confuse, and this is ridiculous, but the main
- 3:54Speaker 2: actor in that series always reminded me of Tom Brady,
- 3:57Speaker 2: like they look just alike.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yes.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Anyway, it also has like Simon Rex, doesn't it. Wow.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I don't know where I'm pulling these names out from. Wow,
- 4:07Speaker 1: that is a deep cut. I mean, Amana Pete went
- 4:09Speaker 1: on to do quite a bit. I think that was
- 4:11Speaker 1: like twenty eleven. By the way, is when the show
- 4:14Speaker 1: came out. Sarah Paulson was in it. Jamie Presley, Sarah Paulson. Yeah, wow,
- 4:20Speaker 1: Ivan Sarah Gay is the Tom Brady lookalike that you
- 4:23Speaker 1: are referring to. That's right. It says they had two seasons,
- 4:28Speaker 1: oh thirty two episodes.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Am I wrong? Was Simon Rex not in that show? No?
- 4:34Speaker 1: You were right?
- 4:35Speaker 2: Anyway, back to Hallmark, Yeah, back to Hallmark. Joe Wagner
- 4:39Speaker 2: plays Professor Amy Winslow, and she has thirty one acting credits,
- 4:44Speaker 2: including six episodes of the MTV prank show Punked. Huh yeah,
- 4:50Speaker 2: way back, like way when when that show was on,
- 4:52Speaker 2: And it looks like her first Hallmark movie was called
- 4:55Speaker 2: Autumn Dreams from twenty fifteen. Apparently she was also the
- 4:58Speaker 2: host of Wipeout.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Oh yes, my family loves that show. We'll ever watched.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Side note, we have a family friend who was on
- 5:07Speaker 2: that show and he was hurt significantly.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I believe it. It looks like a lifelong disability. Yeah,
- 5:17Speaker 1: really hurt, horrifying, and I believe it because those people
- 5:21Speaker 1: fall in ways that are unnatural.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I think he was bouncing on on like one of
- 5:25Speaker 2: those big balls or something, you know what I mean.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Big red balls. I mean it's funny to watch, funny
- 5:29Speaker 1: to say, not funny when you're hurt for the rest
- 5:33Speaker 1: of your life. Yeah, exactly. Anyway, moving on all right.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Christopher Palaha stars as Detective Travis Burke in this movie.
- 5:41Speaker 1: He has seventy seven acting credits and his very first
- 5:45Speaker 1: Wow In two thousand and one, he was Dylan in
- 5:47Speaker 1: the Team Vampire drama Angel for one episode. He wasn't
- 5:53Speaker 1: a recurring so I was never a Buffy fan. But
- 5:57Speaker 1: that's a spinoff of Buffy, is that right? Yes? I
- 5:59Speaker 1: watched both. I loved Buffy, I loved Angel. He has
- 6:02Speaker 1: two movies coming up, Harlan Coben's Shelter and the hotly
- 6:08Speaker 1: promoted A Builtmore Christmas. I'm looking forward to that for
- 6:12Speaker 1: the Channel. I can't wait.
- 6:13Speaker 2: I feel like I've been counting down the entire year
- 6:15Speaker 2: for that movie.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I know they filmed in January, so exciting. I feel
- 6:20Speaker 1: like we could get a second Christmas movie from Christopher
- 6:22Speaker 1: Palaha with that. He's like, I got time throw me
- 6:26Speaker 1: in one of those October filmings. Can I also add here?
- 6:29Speaker 2: And this was like, prior to watching this movie, you know,
- 6:32Speaker 2: I had read that Jill Wagner was in it, and
- 6:36Speaker 2: I thought it might be I was confusing her with
- 6:39Speaker 2: Lindsay Wagner, the Bionic Woman.
- 6:43Speaker 1: You thought we were gonna have a May December romance,
- 6:45Speaker 1: so I didn't. I didn't really know what to expect.
- 6:48Speaker 2: And then when I saw like, I was like, oh,
- 6:50Speaker 2: Jill Wagner, That's not who I thought it was going
- 6:52Speaker 2: to be. And then I had to look it up
- 6:54Speaker 2: to see, like they are two completely different people indeed,
- 6:57Speaker 2: and I was like, was that her mom? Nope, not
- 6:59Speaker 2: her mom either, no relation then nope. Robin Thomas plays
- 7:03Speaker 2: Amy's dad, Graham Winslow. And you want to talk about
- 7:07Speaker 2: impressive resume. Resume, this guy has one hundred and thirty
- 7:11Speaker 2: seven acting credits. Listen to IMDb, and I gotta tell you,
- 7:15Speaker 2: when I started the movie, I recognized his face immediately.
- 7:18Speaker 1: M from the old soap opera Another World. Oh wow,
- 7:23Speaker 1: another deep cut.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Okay, So I had to look it up because I
- 7:26Speaker 2: was like, I was a child right when that soap
- 7:30Speaker 2: opera was on, or was on regularly in my home.
- 7:33Speaker 2: And he played a character named Mark Singleton from nineteen
- 7:37Speaker 2: eighty three to nineteen eighty five, two years. How do
- 7:40Speaker 2: I remember this?
- 7:41Speaker 1: I was eight years old. Imprinted on you that much totally.
- 7:46Speaker 2: He's also been in a slew of other things, including
- 7:49Speaker 2: a movie I was probably too young to watch called
- 7:52Speaker 2: Summer School. Did you ever see that had Courtney Thorne Smith?
- 7:55Speaker 1: Oh, my husband watches it literally every year at the
- 7:58Speaker 1: inn of the summer every year. Actually quite like that movie. Yeah,
- 8:01Speaker 1: he's in it.
- 8:01Speaker 2: He plays like a principal or a vice principle in it,
- 8:04Speaker 2: So next time it's on in your house, you're gonna have.
- 8:06Speaker 1: To look for it. Yeah, I can totally picture him.
- 8:08Speaker 1: He's a kind of a villain in that movie.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Oh interesting, He's been in Who's the Boss, Fuller House, damages,
- 8:15Speaker 2: tons of other things CSI.
- 8:16Speaker 1: He was a welcome site on my screen when this
- 8:19Speaker 1: movie started. I'm talking about about that. Oh okay, exciting.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Sarah Dugdale plays Clare Tit and as this movie opened,
- 8:26Speaker 1: I thought, Wow, that Feace is so familiar, and I
- 8:29Speaker 1: immediately pulled up IMDb and realized that I am recognizing
- 8:32Speaker 1: her from her role as Lizzie on Virgin River, where
- 8:35Speaker 1: she plays like a nineteen year old temptress. Oh Boy's
- 8:40Speaker 1: He's just such a remarkably different role. There's a young,
- 8:45Speaker 1: impressionable boy on the show that she falls for, and
- 8:48Speaker 1: she's a little bit of a troublemaker. It's just so different.
- 8:51Speaker 1: But I really like her. Hmm, I've never seen Virgin River.
- 8:56Speaker 1: You think it's for me? Slightly edgy or homewark A
- 8:58Speaker 1: lot of people. A lot of people say like it's
- 9:01Speaker 1: like watching Hallmark, but it has a little bit more
- 9:03Speaker 1: of an edge. Well, I like that we're so slightly
- 9:05Speaker 1: more of an edge. I like edge. Yeah maybe maybe yeah,
- 9:08Speaker 1: maybe too much?
- 9:09Speaker 2: Okay, So I asked some questions on our Instagram about
- 9:13Speaker 2: this movie, because you know, the Palaha fans really love
- 9:17Speaker 2: this mystery when a one series.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Yes, they've been yelling at us for a while about it.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Right. So my first question was do Travis and Amy
- 9:25Speaker 2: ever kiss? Of course, spoiler, they don't kiss in this episode,
- 9:30Speaker 2: this this pilot movie. I hate this is another side note.
- 9:33Speaker 2: They call these episodes, but it's they're movies.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I don't like that either. So I wanted to know
- 9:39Speaker 1: do they kiss?
- 9:40Speaker 2: And apparently these two do eventually hook up, but it's
- 9:43Speaker 2: a slow burn. Yeah.
- 9:45Speaker 1: I figured we were going to get that answer, much
- 9:48Speaker 1: like Tom and Goldie.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Oh.
- 9:49Speaker 1: I have lots of notes about Tom and Goldie. Oh
- 9:52Speaker 1: okay this movie.
- 9:53Speaker 2: The next thing the fans wanted to know what our
- 9:56Speaker 2: first impressions of the main characters were. Have you put
- 10:00Speaker 2: any thoughts together on this?
- 10:02Speaker 1: Indeed? I have. Okay, let's go. Who would you like
- 10:05Speaker 1: me to start with?
- 10:06Speaker 2: Travisburke?
- 10:07Speaker 1: Daddy Travis Burke? No?
- 10:09Speaker 2: No? Wow?
- 10:10Speaker 1: What about what I meant when I met I thought
- 10:13Speaker 1: we were talking about Graham. Okay, Travis, what wow, Freudian
- 10:19Speaker 1: slip there. So my first impression of Travis Burke is
- 10:23Speaker 1: that this is such a different Polaha than the one
- 10:27Speaker 1: I know from movies that we fairly recently watched, like
- 10:31Speaker 1: We Wish You a Married Christmas, that soccer movie didn't
- 10:34Speaker 1: love so much, even a Dickens of a Holiday. He's
- 10:38Speaker 1: softer in those movies, kind of like dad husbandy. He's
- 10:44Speaker 1: in this came across as more of a tough guy detective.
- 10:48Speaker 1: He does this smolder to Amy's dad at one point,
- 10:51Speaker 1: and I was like, whoa. And I can see now
- 10:55Speaker 1: why the Palaha fandom is so devout, Which is not
- 10:57Speaker 1: to say that I didn't enjoy him before, but I
- 11:00Speaker 1: see why this series is the one they turn to
- 11:02Speaker 1: and they go no, no, no, no, no, you need
- 11:04Speaker 1: to see him as Travis Burke.
- 11:06Speaker 2: I'm gonna agree. I'm also going to add that hair
- 11:11Speaker 2: and that voice can.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Do no wrong. Yeah.
- 11:14Speaker 2: And I even wrote down, it's funny you mentioned smolder.
- 11:17Speaker 2: I in my notes. I wrote, there is a sexy
- 11:20Speaker 2: smolder and I'm here for it.
- 11:22Speaker 1: The Poulahas are onto something.
- 11:24Speaker 2: They certainly are and I understand the fandom the what's
- 11:29Speaker 2: the word I'm looking for lah after dark fandom so
- 11:32Speaker 2: to speak. Oh okay, I wasn't thinking about that, but
- 11:36Speaker 2: I was thinking about how you got your Tyler Hines
- 11:39Speaker 2: fans who are so into him because he has a
- 11:42Speaker 2: sexy smolder about him too. But this character of Travis
- 11:46Speaker 2: Burke is an equal match.
- 11:48Speaker 1: I'm going to say one thousand percent. I co signed
- 11:51Speaker 1: that stage.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, let's talk about Amy Winslow.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Okay. The thing Joe Wagner stands out the most to
- 11:57Speaker 1: me When I think of her, I immediately think of
- 11:59Speaker 1: her role in the Evergreen movies, and I think she's
- 12:01Speaker 1: fine in those movies. Those movies are very classically Hallmark
- 12:04Speaker 1: and take that however you want. She, in my opinion,
- 12:08Speaker 1: shines here in this role. I feel like she's supernatural
- 12:12Speaker 1: as a professor, as a quote consultant to the detective.
- 12:16Speaker 1: This more serious role I think suits her so well.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I think she gets to shine as like the smart, serious,
- 12:24Speaker 1: super hot girl. And knowing that this is seven movies,
- 12:29Speaker 1: I feel like this is a really good pairing between
- 12:31Speaker 1: the two of them, and I am excited about them.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Wow, we're so on the same page because I wrote down,
- 12:37Speaker 2: she's kind of a pest, but a very intelligent, beautiful pest.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Oh look at that. Yeah, I like this.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Role, this like smart, intelligent woman who has something to offer.
- 12:50Speaker 1: And what about Graham?
- 12:52Speaker 2: So I got to say, my suspicious detector is going
- 12:55Speaker 2: off here. Oh could he eventually become a murderer in
- 12:59Speaker 2: one of the future movies?
- 13:01Speaker 1: No, I refuse to believe that's true, because what I
- 13:04Speaker 1: wrote is I found his presence on screen to be
- 13:07Speaker 1: so soothing.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Oh as like a really nice, supportive dad with a
- 13:11Speaker 2: side of silver fox.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Yeah. No, Look, he is credited in all seven movies,
- 13:17Speaker 1: so I was really happy to see that we are
- 13:19Speaker 1: going to get more of him. It's gonna break my
- 13:21Speaker 1: heart if he becomes the bad guy girl. I don't know.
- 13:24Speaker 1: I'm bad at this kind of stuff. Could he be anyway?
- 13:29Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 13:29Speaker 1: I enjoy him too. We didn't do a synopsis.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Let's do a synopsis and then our first impression. When
- 13:35Speaker 2: a college student is found dead, English professor Amy uses
- 13:38Speaker 2: her crime fiction expertise to unravel the case faster than
- 13:42Speaker 2: detective Travis, who ends up working with Amy to catch
- 13:45Speaker 2: the killer, and.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Your first impression of this movie.
- 13:47Speaker 2: I feel like this is what Curious Cater wants to be.
- 13:52Speaker 2: But oh, isn't quite there.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I hear you. My first impression is simply I see
- 13:59Speaker 1: why everyone was yelling us about this movie. Now, So,
- 14:03Speaker 1: what did you like about this movie? Mystery? One on one?
- 14:06Speaker 2: So I'm always a fan of the mystery crime drama
- 14:09Speaker 2: movies on Hallmark movies and mysteries. Yeah, that's a lot
- 14:13Speaker 2: of m's in that sentence. I find myself more invested
- 14:16Speaker 2: versus like a regular Hallmark movie because in the regular
- 14:20Speaker 2: Hallmark movies, I've come to anticipate what will happen in those,
- 14:23Speaker 2: where these ones kind of like throw me for a loop.
- 14:26Speaker 2: I never know exactly, and it's probably because I haven't
- 14:29Speaker 2: watched that many. I'm sure there's a clear, you know,
- 14:32Speaker 2: formula it follows.
- 14:34Speaker 1: I do want to talk about that later. Oh okay.
- 14:37Speaker 2: I'm always like pleasantly surprised with how much that I like.
- 14:40Speaker 1: These I agree with you. My favorite review of this
- 14:45Speaker 1: movie from IMDb is this is the best of the
- 14:48Speaker 1: Mystery series I've seen. The acting is good, there are
- 14:51Speaker 1: no weird wigs to distract, and the leads have chemistry.
- 14:53Speaker 1: I look forward to more parts in this series, there
- 14:55Speaker 1: are wigs. Comment just made me laugh. I agree with
- 14:58Speaker 1: you about the mysteries because I think they bring something
- 15:01Speaker 1: that the other movies don't necessarily always have. The mystery
- 15:05Speaker 1: keeps me watching. I would like to know who done it?
- 15:07Speaker 2: Mm hmm, me too, although I'm real bad at figuring
- 15:10Speaker 2: out that part of it.
- 15:12Speaker 1: I would like to talk about that.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna later on, I'm gonna tell you who
- 15:16Speaker 2: I thought my number one suspect was.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Oh, okay, is this not a perfect character for Chris Paula?
- 15:21Speaker 1: How to play cut? Really? I'm like, I think you
- 15:25Speaker 1: actually are a detective who moonlights as an actor.
- 15:28Speaker 2: It's a role for him. He is perfect in it,
- 15:33Speaker 2: and I wonder this is just me wondering is this
- 15:37Speaker 2: a stretch for him?
- 15:38Speaker 1: Like I you know, I've seen him in.
- 15:39Speaker 2: A handful probably three regular Hallmark movies. So now I'm like, well,
- 15:44Speaker 2: I need to check out a full catalog of his
- 15:46Speaker 2: work because I want to see what else he can do. Like,
- 15:50Speaker 2: is this just like a total natural fit to play
- 15:52Speaker 2: this Travis detective guy or is it a stretch for him?
- 15:55Speaker 1: Yeah? That's a great question. And what roles does he
- 15:58Speaker 1: feel most comfortable in right. I honestly could see this
- 16:03Speaker 1: movie series turned into a television series, like I would
- 16:08Speaker 1: be here for.
- 16:09Speaker 2: That, like a weekly Yes, yeah, I could get on
- 16:14Speaker 2: board with that too.
- 16:15Speaker 1: What else did you like? I would say, knowing that
- 16:17Speaker 1: we get seven movies in this series, I love the
- 16:20Speaker 1: setup of so many character arcs. I think if we
- 16:22Speaker 1: were to have watched this in twenty nineteen as it aired,
- 16:26Speaker 1: I would be left feeling like, wait, I want more
- 16:28Speaker 1: of Claire and Bud. I want more of Grant, like,
- 16:31Speaker 1: tell me more about them. Knowing how much more we
- 16:34Speaker 1: get and knowing that these characters are in multiple movies,
- 16:37Speaker 1: I feel like, Okay, I'm okay with just the setup
- 16:40Speaker 1: here and not the full payoff because I feel like
- 16:43Speaker 1: we've got time to get to that.
- 16:45Speaker 2: That's a good insight there. Would you continue watching the series?
- 16:50Speaker 1: I totally would because I feel like the fandom did
- 16:53Speaker 1: not let me down on this one, and I need
- 16:56Speaker 1: to see their relationship play out. You'll see something in
- 16:59Speaker 1: one of my wits.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Okay, Hey, Jill Wagner, Yeah, incredibly beautiful, but I feel
- 17:06Speaker 2: like she gets the Hallmark Yearbook make under in this
- 17:09Speaker 2: movie versus her pictures on the Internet. I'm gonna say
- 17:14Speaker 2: I think in this movie she was very beautiful. Really
- 17:17Speaker 2: liked her outfits too, gotta say, but when I see
- 17:20Speaker 2: pictures of her on the Internet, she's just gorgeous. She's
- 17:24Speaker 2: absolutely stunning.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Well, let me ask you this, why don't we see
- 17:28Speaker 1: her in more Hallmark movies? I don't know, kind of surprised,
- 17:32Speaker 1: but I mean, when you think about it, she made
- 17:35Speaker 1: seven Mystery one on one movies over the course of
- 17:38Speaker 1: three years, so it's not like they weren't using her.
- 17:41Speaker 1: But since the last Mystery one on one movie, she
- 17:45Speaker 1: hasn't been in a Hallmark movie.
- 17:47Speaker 2: I would think the fans would be calling for her
- 17:49Speaker 2: to be in a movie.
- 17:51Speaker 1: She's been in a Christmas movie. Last year, she was
- 17:54Speaker 1: in a movie with Cameron Mathison which was not for
- 17:56Speaker 1: the Hallmark channel. Uh oh, let me find out why
- 18:00Speaker 1: network that are? Yeah? Oh oh no, oh no, oh no, Okay,
- 18:08Speaker 1: it is possible that this movie was acquired. It says
- 18:12Speaker 1: more acquired Christmas movies coming to Ghak Family. So I
- 18:16Speaker 1: do not think this was a movie that was made
- 18:19Speaker 1: for that network.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Because we have we could have potentially blown the lid
- 18:23Speaker 2: right off this thing as to why there is not
- 18:26Speaker 2: an eighth movie and why she has not been on
- 18:28Speaker 2: the network.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Potentially, Potentially, she was in an ABC Family Christmas movie
- 18:32Speaker 1: in twenty twenty one for Westworth. What else did you
- 18:35Speaker 1: like about this movie?
- 18:36Speaker 2: I like these two together. I there's a definite obvious
- 18:41Speaker 2: attraction between these two characters, and I can can't appreciate
- 18:44Speaker 2: it wasn't all like fireworks at the end. Yes, Instead,
- 18:48Speaker 2: there was like this like sincere relief that they had
- 18:51Speaker 2: each other.
- 18:51Speaker 1: And I kind of like that a lot. As much
- 18:54Speaker 1: as we complain this movie took place over a series
- 18:57Speaker 1: of weeks, right, and we complain about that in other
- 19:00Speaker 1: movies where they rush into the relationship, I think, as
- 19:05Speaker 1: much as I want to see some heat from these two,
- 19:09Speaker 1: they're gonna make us work for it. Hey.
- 19:11Speaker 2: So there were a few funny lines that I really
- 19:14Speaker 2: quite enjoyed in this movie, uh huh.
- 19:16Speaker 1: One in particular is when.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Bud calls Travis Trav and Travis says, don't ever call
- 19:21Speaker 2: me Trav again, and I laughed out loud. It was
- 19:24Speaker 2: so quick, like you might have missed it, but it
- 19:27Speaker 2: was really funny. And there's another scene where Amy's totally
- 19:30Speaker 2: crashing in on the crime scene and Travis is like, ugh,
- 19:33Speaker 2: what is she doing here?
- 19:34Speaker 1: I love that these mystery movies give a little bit
- 19:37Speaker 1: of a nod to the dummies out there who maybe
- 19:39Speaker 1: aren't paying close attention throughout the movie. They're like, we
- 19:42Speaker 1: know sometimes this is a background movie for you, So
- 19:44Speaker 1: let me give you a synopsis of all the characters
- 19:46Speaker 1: and their motivation. And they did this this time with
- 19:49Speaker 1: Amy and Alden in the car when Alden's driving with
- 19:51Speaker 1: a gun pointed at her, and she breaks down all
- 19:55Speaker 1: of his motives and why people did things and how
- 19:58Speaker 1: he was caught and what what actions came as a
- 20:02Speaker 1: result of his actions. I was like, thank you very
- 20:04Speaker 1: much for this ninety second synopsis of everything I might
- 20:07Speaker 1: have forgotten why all these characters were involved.
- 20:10Speaker 2: A little baby recap in case you nodded off, yes,
- 20:14Speaker 2: in case you got.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Confused, or we're folding laundry instead of paying attention.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Hey. What I really liked at the beginning was we
- 20:20Speaker 2: got a remake of Minute Works.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Who can it be? Now? Yeah? I actually really liked
- 20:26Speaker 1: that opening scene with it.
- 20:28Speaker 2: He's like, the motorcycle and the music I like drew.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Me right in and I was like, is that plaha
- 20:35Speaker 1: on the motorcycle. Of course it wasn't. I liked that
- 20:38Speaker 1: opening kick him over the edge of the cliff. I
- 20:40Speaker 1: like him when we hit a little of a grit
- 20:42Speaker 1: on our Hallmark movies. Me too, Me too, Me too?
- 20:45Speaker 1: Are you ready for what you wished for? Yeah? The
- 20:47Speaker 1: first thing I wish is for someone to DM me
- 20:49Speaker 1: and let me know what movie these two kiss in? Like,
- 20:53Speaker 1: maybe I can just skip ahead? You want to skip today?
- 20:56Speaker 2: Yeah? Clearly you're not into the slow burn. You need
- 20:59Speaker 2: the action right away.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Sometimes I do, okay, like is it movie five or
- 21:04Speaker 1: is it maybe three?
- 21:05Speaker 2: Right? Like? The big difference here, okay, Uh, what I
- 21:10Speaker 2: wish for is this had too many suspects.
- 21:12Speaker 1: You wish a fewer suspects.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Yeah, because when this happens, my brain kind of like
- 21:16Speaker 2: fritzes out and I just want to go to the
- 21:18Speaker 2: end and find out, like who did it? Yes? And
- 21:21Speaker 2: I would also like to note here that I was
- 21:24Speaker 2: way off with who I thought.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Oh who did you think? I thought it was Bud
- 21:27Speaker 1: from the beginning. I was like, oh, nope, that guy
- 21:30Speaker 1: is super suspect. Oh from the.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Last Yes, it was not him, It was not You
- 21:36Speaker 2: didn't think this had too many suspects.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Though overall I think that's honestly pretty typical of these
- 21:41Speaker 1: movies and mysteries movie there's lots of misdirection. And while
- 21:45Speaker 1: we're talking about this, I'll tell you that I have
- 21:48Speaker 1: a question. It's in Hallmark movies. Is it always the
- 21:52Speaker 1: person you least expect, because that is the assumption. I
- 21:55Speaker 1: go into these movies now like they just misdirect, misdirect, misdirect.
- 22:00Speaker 1: And in the last movie we watched, it was the
- 22:03Speaker 1: nice assistant who was the bad guy, the Paul Campbell
- 22:06Speaker 1: cases of Mystery Lane. And in this movie, I was like, Oh,
- 22:11Speaker 1: it's Alden. Because he's this guy who has the access,
- 22:14Speaker 1: He's everywhere, nobody's paying attention to him. I didn't have
- 22:18Speaker 1: any idea what his motivation was, but very early on
- 22:21Speaker 1: I was like, he's way too involved to not be involved.
- 22:25Speaker 1: That's interesting. Yeah. I didn't pick up on that, and
- 22:28Speaker 1: nobody was looking his direction, so neither was I. When
- 22:32Speaker 1: I read a mystery novel, I never have any idea
- 22:36Speaker 1: who it is. As far as I know, they didn't
- 22:38Speaker 1: talk about Alden's child being sick until he's being accused
- 22:42Speaker 1: of being the murderer.
- 22:43Speaker 2: No girl they talk about it way at the beginning,
- 22:46Speaker 2: he's installing like security cameras and they exchange Amy and
- 22:50Speaker 2: him exchange like they have a conversation. He asks about
- 22:54Speaker 2: her mom dying, and then she asks about his sick kid,
- 22:57Speaker 2: and he shows a picture on his phone of like
- 22:59Speaker 2: a bald child, the one he shows later.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Oh yeah, by my brain erased that moment.
- 23:06Speaker 2: This is where I was like, is this mystery or
- 23:08Speaker 2: misery here? Because like, let's exchange our sad stories. Oh boy,
- 23:13Speaker 2: Oh wait, I have a question for you.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:17Speaker 2: Do you think if Professor Amy wasn't involved, would Travis
- 23:21Speaker 2: have been able to wrap us up on his own,
- 23:24Speaker 2: like more quickly and efficiently.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Oh, I thought you're asking a different question. I don't know,
- 23:29Speaker 1: because she did seem to be pretty helpful. She had
- 23:32Speaker 1: a lot of insider information about people on campus that
- 23:36Speaker 1: it might have taken him a longer time to get to.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Like I get that, like it sets up like their
- 23:42Speaker 2: working relationship for future episodes, but I know it's kind
- 23:46Speaker 2: of like And here's where I draw a parallel between
- 23:49Speaker 2: this series and the Curious Caterer series is that we
- 23:53Speaker 2: have Goldie who like fumbles into detective work.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Uh, huh, or like she's not supposed to.
- 23:58Speaker 2: And it's kind of the same with Professor Amy is
- 24:01Speaker 2: like she's like stumbling into helping him out.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Yeah. I think that's the perfect parallel. I mean, I
- 24:07Speaker 1: felt like she was very helpful and at the same
- 24:10Speaker 1: time shouldn't have been there when he's questioning the suspects.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Why is she there? There's multiple times when they find
- 24:19Speaker 1: Lacey and they're questioning Josh, there's no reason for her
- 24:24Speaker 1: to be there, like playing the good cop bad cop
- 24:27Speaker 1: role with him, Like she's no cop, she's teacher, so
- 24:31Speaker 1: like the bad cop good teacher role. I felt like, oh,
- 24:36Speaker 1: this has gotta be an egregious breach of police protocol here, totally,
- 24:42Speaker 1: But she does offer a lot of insight that Travis
- 24:47Speaker 1: might not have had without her. I will just say
- 24:50Speaker 1: I found her less intrusive than I find Goldie's character,
- 24:54Speaker 1: as much as neither of them belongs where they are.
- 24:57Speaker 1: I think Amy's characters are more natural thing.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Yeah that's fair. Yeah, all I can think of is
- 25:02Speaker 2: Goldie is like coming up behind Tom and like.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Tom, what Joe for the whatever?
- 25:06Speaker 2: And then Tom turns around like a du fist, and Yeah,
- 25:09Speaker 2: it's like watching the Three Stooges together.
- 25:12Speaker 1: I like those movies.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Here's like a stupid wish for I wish Professor Amy
- 25:20Speaker 2: was teaching true crime instead of crime fiction. Oh interesting
- 25:24Speaker 2: only because I don't read a ton of crime fiction,
- 25:27Speaker 2: but I am invested in true crime, and I feel
- 25:29Speaker 2: like crime fiction could be like almost fantasy a little
- 25:34Speaker 2: bit in terms of like anything can happen, whereas like
- 25:38Speaker 2: a true crime, actual true crime like follows.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Do you get what I'm throwing down here? Yes? I mean,
- 25:46Speaker 1: and Travis kind of throws that at her. He's like,
- 25:48Speaker 1: this is an actual crime, not something written in the
- 25:51Speaker 1: pages of a story. So yes, a writer can make
- 25:55Speaker 1: anything happen, right, That's That's what I was trying to say.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Exactly Interesting. On that same point, I said, I wish
- 26:02Speaker 1: I could take a crime fiction class, because not because
- 26:05Speaker 1: I have any interest in writing crime fiction, but I
- 26:08Speaker 1: think it might be an interesting way to understand, Like
- 26:11Speaker 1: maybe I would be a better reader a consumer of
- 26:14Speaker 1: crime fiction if I understood the tropes and the setup
- 26:19Speaker 1: and the structure that crime fiction writers follow, because when
- 26:24Speaker 1: I read a crime fiction novel, I'm like, oh, I
- 26:26Speaker 1: wonder who did it? And then like we're three pages
- 26:28Speaker 1: to the end. I'm like, oh, that's a total surprise.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Didn't see that coming. Interesting point.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Finally, I wish the actual criminal what's his name again, Alden?
- 26:39Speaker 2: I wish he wasn't motivated by having a sick child,
- 26:43Speaker 2: because okay, look at parents have ill children, can act
- 26:46Speaker 2: out of desperation, and I'm not suggesting that this is
- 26:49Speaker 2: the way to do it, but I just wish he
- 26:50Speaker 2: had a different motive.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Yeah, so that you would dislike him more.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Yeah, like, yeah, truly make him like a bad guy,
- 26:59Speaker 2: make him urtorists because he is evil.
- 27:01Speaker 1: I don't know. Well, that's another thing. Again. We're pretty
- 27:05Speaker 1: new to the Hallmark movies and mysteries. But even if
- 27:07Speaker 1: you just look back at the most reason, like the
- 27:09Speaker 1: cases of Mystery Lane, her motivation was like justice for
- 27:12Speaker 1: her sister. Is this a running theme through these mysteries
- 27:16Speaker 1: where they try and humanize these bad guys by giving
- 27:19Speaker 1: them some sort of backstory that makes you not just
- 27:22Speaker 1: completely write them off. So IMDb had a couple dig
- 27:26Speaker 1: you see, that's right there for us? Do tell? Professor
- 27:30Speaker 1: Winslow tells the detective she can tell he was married
- 27:32Speaker 1: by seeing the mark on his forefinger, which is not
- 27:34Speaker 1: your ring finger. I misspeak all the time. But I
- 27:40Speaker 1: don't have an editor in my life. Isn't there some
- 27:42Speaker 1: sort of supervisor? That's the question of those things? That's funny,
- 27:46Speaker 1: And Travis says, okay, but I got to cross my
- 27:49Speaker 1: eyes and dot my teas, which certainly is probably something
- 27:53Speaker 1: I've said before too. But script supervisors exist for a reason.
- 27:57Speaker 1: That's funny.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Well, even the actor you would think would like I
- 28:00Speaker 2: go wait, wait, that doesn't that line doesn't really work.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Or I say things on this podcast and I don't
- 28:06Speaker 1: hear myself say it until I'm editing and I'm like, wow,
- 28:08Speaker 1: that was the wrong word.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Like I just completely say the wrong thing. So, yeah,
- 28:12Speaker 2: that's really funny. Mm hmm, good catches IMDb.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Let's rate this movie and then I'll ask this question. Okay,
- 28:19Speaker 1: I gave it four stars. Ooh me again, I get it.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Three point seventy five. Oh, we're flipped from earlier. Yeah,
- 28:26Speaker 1: most recent review. So here's my question. Three point seven
- 28:29Speaker 1: five is a good review? Like, that's a sign that
- 28:30Speaker 1: you enjoyed this movie? Yeah? Do you find it sometimes
- 28:33Speaker 1: harder to review movies that you kind of enjoy watching? Overall?
- 28:39Speaker 2: I find it harder to pick out the elements of
- 28:41Speaker 2: things I didn't like. I'm gonna throw it back to
- 28:44Speaker 2: the Wedding. Cottage was the movie that I felt was
- 28:48Speaker 2: very easy to watch and I enjoyed it overall, And
- 28:51Speaker 2: but when I sat down to review it, I was like, hmmm, yeah,
- 28:56Speaker 2: what was it that I really liked about it?
- 28:58Speaker 1: Yeah? All right. Thank you for listening to this episode
