- 0:02Speaker 1: Radio radio Radio Commies of Myth and Bullshit Radio phonic
- 0:16Speaker 1: novella Look Radio hosted by Malamn. Welcome to season four
- 0:24Speaker 1: of Local Radio or rosas wanted for Crimes against the Patriarchy.
- 0:31Speaker 1: We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming to bring you Quarantine Confidential,
- 0:37Speaker 1: a special pandemic cast about our experiences with quarantine and
- 0:41Speaker 1: COVID nineteen. I'm Fiosa and I'm Mala. Our intention behind
- 0:46Speaker 1: this mini series is to archive our experiences and our
- 0:49Speaker 1: communities experiences during this global coronavirus pandemic. Thank you for
- 0:55Speaker 1: joining us on this journey. Um, it's already a wild journey.
- 0:59Speaker 1: It's day. I don't even know what in quarantine and
- 1:03Speaker 1: self isolation. Um. This is our first piece of audio
- 1:07Speaker 1: that we're going to be putting out since really this
- 1:11Speaker 1: whole thing blew up. Yeah, episode that we put out,
- 1:15Speaker 1: I don't think we had any idea that we would
- 1:17Speaker 1: be in. No, it's it's been a very interesting time,
- 1:23Speaker 1: to say the least, like so many things have changed
- 1:26Speaker 1: and like so many things have gone. On our last episode,
- 1:29Speaker 1: we chatted with yes and Ferrada about her campaign running
- 1:34Speaker 1: for council District three of Whittier, and so we were
- 1:37Speaker 1: in a very different mindset. I was preparing for my
- 1:40Speaker 1: trip to Bidu, Like it was a very very different time.
- 1:46Speaker 1: And um, well you know, life come back you fast,
- 1:52Speaker 1: right and not even like life has to be put
- 1:54Speaker 1: on pause because we're still living and we're still doing things.
- 1:57Speaker 1: But like your plans are definitely being postponed. You have
- 2:01Speaker 1: to like very very much rewire your your own programming
- 2:05Speaker 1: right now, right because you're it's really not business as usual,
- 2:08Speaker 1: and there's no way for it to be business as
- 2:10Speaker 1: usual in everything every like meaning of that phrase, right
- 2:14Speaker 1: Like work is different, your social life is different, your
- 2:17Speaker 1: family life may be different. It's yeah, we're in very
- 2:21Speaker 1: interesting times right now. It's really wild. I mean, so
- 2:26Speaker 1: I don't even know where to begin. There's so much
- 2:29Speaker 1: to talk about. I mean, we can you mentioned Peru right, like,
- 2:33Speaker 1: let's there, Okay, Okay. So I left Forbidu on February nine,
- 2:42Speaker 1: so it's been almost a month now, and um, the
- 2:47Speaker 1: day before I left, there was the very first reported
- 2:50Speaker 1: case of coronavirus in Mexico, and I had a layover
- 2:54Speaker 1: in Mexico. So immediately my mother texts me and it's
- 2:57Speaker 1: like cancel your trip. Postponing you have to go at
- 3:01Speaker 1: a later time, you cannot go. And I was very
- 3:04Speaker 1: much like really like following the hype of like at
- 3:09Speaker 1: the time, we were still talking about it, like the flu.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Right at that time period in February, it was very
- 3:16Speaker 1: much like the flu is worse, like the flu kills
- 3:18Speaker 1: more people. So that's very much where I was basing
- 3:21Speaker 1: my my opinions and my facts on about COVID nineteen so.
- 3:26Speaker 1: And also at the time, there were no cases in Pidu,
- 3:28Speaker 1: so I felt like it's it was appropriate to continue
- 3:31Speaker 1: my trip, so I did, and my last few days
- 3:36Speaker 1: there was when the very first few cases of the
- 3:39Speaker 1: coronavirus started appearing or being confirmed in Pidu. So definitely
- 3:45Speaker 1: feeling the energy shift while I was there, not only
- 3:48Speaker 1: for myself, but I wasn't here for the initial like
- 3:53Speaker 1: hoarding and panic buying, you know. So my Frima would
- 3:57Speaker 1: call me and was like, there's no water here, there's
- 3:59Speaker 1: no this, there's no that, and I didn't really believe her.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And like I would talk to my mom and she
- 4:04Speaker 1: was like, no, there's stuff here, Like I just went
- 4:06Speaker 1: to the grocery store today. Things are fine, right, So
- 4:09Speaker 1: I didn't really know what to believe. And then my
- 4:12Speaker 1: last couple of days they're like the last two days
- 4:15Speaker 1: I saw. I started to see people panic buying there
- 4:18Speaker 1: as well, and then I was like, oh shit, what
- 4:23Speaker 1: the funk is happening? And then I was like anxious
- 4:25Speaker 1: to get back home because I was like, what if
- 4:27Speaker 1: I had already thought like what if I get stuck
- 4:30Speaker 1: like somewhere. I was leaving on a Thursday, and then
- 4:34Speaker 1: I had a layover in Mexico, so I was like,
- 4:36Speaker 1: what if somewhere along the way, like I get stuck.
- 4:39Speaker 1: And then I come back on a Friday, and I
- 4:43Speaker 1: come back, I go around midnight, and it was really
- 4:47Speaker 1: interesting to see how international arrivals were being handled at
- 4:51Speaker 1: l a X. So right, I saw absolutely no signage,
- 4:59Speaker 1: like no lines anywhere for if you're sick, if you're
- 5:03Speaker 1: feeling these symptoms, contact you know whatever number, if you're sick,
- 5:08Speaker 1: head over to this website. I saw nothing like that.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And in Mexico and Biddu, where I was at both
- 5:13Speaker 1: of those airports, there were signs everywhere. Sure, And so
- 5:17Speaker 1: I get to L A X and there's none, and
- 5:19Speaker 1: I go through customs and there's absolutely no questions about
- 5:23Speaker 1: like are you feeling ill? Did you come into contact
- 5:26Speaker 1: with anyone that was ill? Nothing like that. So it
- 5:28Speaker 1: was very confusing to go through that process. And then
- 5:34Speaker 1: a couple of days later, bid who actually close their
- 5:37Speaker 1: borders so you know, ends and no outs. So I
- 5:40Speaker 1: literally like you narrowly escaped, narrowly, truly truly. I left
- 5:47Speaker 1: on a Thursday and by Monday the borders were closed,
- 5:51Speaker 1: and it's like a really so the president of PROVE
- 5:54Speaker 1: has been criticized a lot by foreign travelers and just
- 5:57Speaker 1: like I'm assuming embassies because he reported like he made
- 6:01Speaker 1: that announcement on a Sunday, like in the evening and
- 6:04Speaker 1: was like by midnight, you can't leave. So if you
- 6:07Speaker 1: had a flight on Monday, like the Holist day, that's
- 6:09Speaker 1: it stuck, you know. So I was and I have
- 6:12Speaker 1: kind of thought about that. So like a day or
- 6:15Speaker 1: two before, like I kept checking the news and like
- 6:17Speaker 1: following like the announcements because I was like, what if
- 6:20Speaker 1: literally there's a lockdown and then I can't go home,
- 6:23Speaker 1: And sure enough, lockdown people gonna go home. Girl, You
- 6:29Speaker 1: got out of there not one minute, like I know.
- 6:33Speaker 1: And now it's like there's like four cases four hundred
- 6:37Speaker 1: confirmed cases. Folks are literally on lockdown, like quarantine. You
- 6:44Speaker 1: there's a curfew like after a p M you cannot
- 6:47Speaker 1: go anywhere. There's like military tanks like so that people
- 6:51Speaker 1: don't like sit their homes like it's serious. Serious. So yeah, girl,
- 6:57Speaker 1: I'm back. Thank Thank god, its thank goddess, thank everything,
- 7:02Speaker 1: Thank everyone that's in my experience, like coming back and
- 7:05Speaker 1: then entering like the beginning of social distancing and now
- 7:10Speaker 1: we're in you know, safer at home here in l A.
- 7:13Speaker 1: So like, what has your experience been through all of this? Yeah?
- 7:17Speaker 1: And it was funny because you know, you were over there,
- 7:21Speaker 1: but you had gotten like your international texting plan and everything.
- 7:24Speaker 1: So we were still texting and just do you know,
- 7:27Speaker 1: giving each other updates back and forth and checking in
- 7:30Speaker 1: and you asking us what's going on over here and
- 7:33Speaker 1: what's going on over there? And um, like we sent
- 7:38Speaker 1: to each other. You sent to me an article about
- 7:40Speaker 1: like now the US is charging folks to be like
- 7:47Speaker 1: helped out of Peru. Right, Okay, there you go, right
- 7:52Speaker 1: right that The United States government is like, yeah, we'll
- 7:55Speaker 1: get you out of Peru, but we're gonna charge you
- 7:57Speaker 1: nine hundred dollars. Yeah, that's wild, dude. My experience has
- 8:04Speaker 1: been um mostly centered around work, right because I work
- 8:08Speaker 1: at a school. So schools are these small communities with
- 8:11Speaker 1: tons of people in close proximity to each other, and
- 8:13Speaker 1: you know, the kids are always touching each other and
- 8:16Speaker 1: sharing drinks and food and everything. There's no such thing
- 8:21Speaker 1: as social distancing in a school small children. So um,
- 8:27Speaker 1: it started at school and they were really getting the
- 8:29Speaker 1: faculty prepared and saying, look, we don't really know what
- 8:32Speaker 1: to expect. We're just listening to the CDC. We're just
- 8:35Speaker 1: listening to you know, the health department locally and basically
- 8:41Speaker 1: prepping us to teach online for an extended period of time.
- 8:44Speaker 1: That was step one. Hey, like some trips, some field trips,
- 8:48Speaker 1: some things might get canceled because we want to stop
- 8:51Speaker 1: community spread and it hasn't gotten to us yet, but
- 8:54Speaker 1: we want to participate in prevention and we're just following guidelines.
- 8:58Speaker 1: So it went from let's start getting ready to teach
- 9:01Speaker 1: online to programming across the board getting canceled to literally
- 9:06Speaker 1: from one night to the next, they like sent us
- 9:09Speaker 1: an emergency text, they emailed us, they called us, and
- 9:11Speaker 1: they let us know. Like it was like eight nine
- 9:14Speaker 1: pm on a weeknight, and they were like campus is closed,
- 9:18Speaker 1: do not come back tomorrow, basically, don't come back ever
- 9:23Speaker 1: on standby. Um, and that's what it's been. So we're
- 9:27Speaker 1: getting ready to just take and it's the thing is
- 9:31Speaker 1: there online schools, but you can't just create an online
- 9:34Speaker 1: school overnight. That's not how that works. And so it's
- 9:38Speaker 1: gonna be really interesting come Monday of next week, which
- 9:42Speaker 1: is our first day back, to see how it all works.
- 9:44Speaker 1: And UM, I really am very concerned about how this
- 9:48Speaker 1: is going to impact education and college and all that
- 9:52Speaker 1: stuff across the board moving forward, because I can't all
- 9:59Speaker 1: all school no and not expect a ripple effect. So
- 10:05Speaker 1: that's I've been at home. I've been at home with
- 10:07Speaker 1: papas and with my I'm taking care of one of
- 10:10Speaker 1: my grandparents who's here with me, and that's it. We're
- 10:13Speaker 1: just staying in and going to the market when we
- 10:15Speaker 1: have to and just trying to keep ourselves occupied. Writing
- 10:19Speaker 1: it out. Yeah's writing it out, Sam, And so like,
- 10:24Speaker 1: have you been have you been following like a schedule
- 10:29Speaker 1: for yourself? Like have you created a schedule? You kind
- 10:31Speaker 1: of just like I'm just gonna do what I want
- 10:33Speaker 1: throughout the day, or like, how has it been like
- 10:35Speaker 1: for you, like staying at home not so much as schedule,
- 10:38Speaker 1: but specific tasks that I want to accomplish in whatever
- 10:42Speaker 1: order they get accomplished. And um, I try and give
- 10:45Speaker 1: myself like categories, you know, like sort of per Marie Condo, right,
- 10:52Speaker 1: like organizing as a category and paperwork as a category. Um,
- 10:56Speaker 1: things I want to donate as a category, things like that.
- 11:00Speaker 1: So just kind of like all the things that I
- 11:02Speaker 1: don't get to work on, in the little projects that
- 11:05Speaker 1: get set set aside because of life, I'm just doing
- 11:08Speaker 1: all that. Yeah. How about you, Well, you're still going
- 11:12Speaker 1: to work because you work in healthcare. Oh my god. Okay,
- 11:15Speaker 1: so talk about that girl. Okay, So the safer at
- 11:20Speaker 1: home does not apply to my field, to my field
- 11:25Speaker 1: of work, it does not apply because we are in
- 11:28Speaker 1: the health care industry where healthcare partners, we provide living
- 11:33Speaker 1: assistance for folks with developmental disabilities, and we provide services.
- 11:37Speaker 1: So safer at home does not apply to us. So
- 11:41Speaker 1: even though I do not give direct care, I still
- 11:44Speaker 1: have to be in the office because we're basically doing
- 11:47Speaker 1: emergency response operation wise, It's not like, as we said, earlier,
- 11:52Speaker 1: like it's not business as usual. So usually are clients
- 11:57Speaker 1: that are in a day program, they go and they
- 12:00Speaker 1: go on into the community, they go work, and they
- 12:03Speaker 1: have these different tasks depending on there are different abilities.
- 12:07Speaker 1: So that is canceled. So now we have clients home
- 12:10Speaker 1: from nine to two nine am to two pm, where
- 12:13Speaker 1: they would usually be out in their program, so dealing
- 12:16Speaker 1: with perhaps more behaviors because they're used to their routine
- 12:21Speaker 1: and they're used to doing something in the community and
- 12:23Speaker 1: now they have to be home. So there's all these
- 12:26Speaker 1: different things that are at play right now, like industry wise,
- 12:30Speaker 1: and it's very much day to day. So last week
- 12:34Speaker 1: I was able to work from home two days out
- 12:36Speaker 1: of the week. This week I've been in the office
- 12:39Speaker 1: and then like tomorrow I get to I get to
- 12:42Speaker 1: work from home. So it's just kind of it's very
- 12:44Speaker 1: touch and go. One of our caregivers was actually pulled
- 12:49Speaker 1: over by the police and they were like, where are
- 12:51Speaker 1: you going, Like happy home. Yeah, So they're really pulling
- 12:56Speaker 1: people over and telling them to go. I had no idea.
- 12:59Speaker 1: I know that because obviously, like our governor in California,
- 13:03Speaker 1: Governor Newsom, was like, oh, you can still be out
- 13:05Speaker 1: and like Mary Garcetti said the same thing, like to
- 13:08Speaker 1: the grocery store, you can go sking like those things, right,
- 13:11Speaker 1: you know, like this person got pulled over. So now
- 13:15Speaker 1: like my work provided us little cards that were supposed
- 13:18Speaker 1: to keep in our wallet, that says like we're at home,
- 13:21Speaker 1: like I'm exempt from safer at home. Yeah, yeah, I
- 13:28Speaker 1: have not heard one of those stories. And I had
- 13:32Speaker 1: no idea that they were pulling folks over. Yeah, girl,
- 13:36Speaker 1: So because Garcetti did get up on TV and say
- 13:41Speaker 1: this doesn't mean, yeah, you can't go for a walk
- 13:46Speaker 1: or you can't maybe found much less restrictive than I
- 13:52Speaker 1: guess actually is I mean? And also, you know where
- 13:55Speaker 1: we provide services are like the smaller so we will
- 13:58Speaker 1: we provide services all over La County, but specifically, like
- 14:01Speaker 1: there are some cities that we work in that have
- 14:03Speaker 1: their own governments, so like city and Santa Fe Springs,
- 14:07Speaker 1: City of Whittier, City, Manebello. So I don't know if
- 14:10Speaker 1: they have their own rules, but typically even like the
- 14:15Speaker 1: smaller city governments follow like what l A the l
- 14:19Speaker 1: A City mayor says, Oh, I don't really know what
- 14:23Speaker 1: that's about. But yeah, so I'm you know, I've been
- 14:27Speaker 1: on the lookout, you know for cops. Like if I'm
- 14:30Speaker 1: driving to work and like, funk, am I gonna be
- 14:32Speaker 1: about to get pulled over for whatever reason because I'm
- 14:35Speaker 1: supposed to be at home, but I don't know those
- 14:38Speaker 1: little cards are supposed to protect us. Supposedly, it's just
- 14:42Speaker 1: my tiniest little car. Like, um, excusing officer, I can
- 14:46Speaker 1: drive to my office. Yeah, I'm like, Um, our employers
- 14:50Speaker 1: are they? What if? Okay? Because let's let's hypothetically for
- 14:55Speaker 1: things like this, Um, it's like then up to the
- 15:00Speaker 1: discretion of the individual police officer to decide whether or
- 15:03Speaker 1: not baking you have a good reason for being out,
- 15:07Speaker 1: and then whatever fucking dude in a uniform decides over
- 15:12Speaker 1: exactly exactly jesus, I know, I know, I don't like that.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I know it's scary, scary girl. And then like, just
- 15:23Speaker 1: like the good thing is that our office is like
- 15:25Speaker 1: spacious enough that I'm not in close proximity to people.
- 15:29Speaker 1: So when I am there, like I can close my door,
- 15:33Speaker 1: and like when people walk in there not walking directly
- 15:35Speaker 1: into my space, they're still like there's probably a good
- 15:39Speaker 1: ten feet um, but nonetheless, like the energy around is
- 15:44Speaker 1: like murky, it's funky. People don't want to be there,
- 15:47Speaker 1: like people like we have to continue working for the
- 15:50Speaker 1: sake of our clients and our individuals, but people don't
- 15:53Speaker 1: want to be out like they want to be home safe.
- 15:56Speaker 1: You know. I say that you can be in your
- 15:58Speaker 1: own home, so that that girl, it's a miss. So
- 16:02Speaker 1: you were saying earlier that you are taking care of
- 16:05Speaker 1: one of your grandparents. Yeah, and so how has that been, Slash.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I'm sure you've seen the like multiple post by different
- 16:16Speaker 1: like millennials talking about their boomer parents and how they
- 16:19Speaker 1: can't get them to stay home and like typically like
- 16:22Speaker 1: Latino Latin X parents, have you had that experience with
- 16:27Speaker 1: either your grandparents or your parents? So I think that
- 16:32Speaker 1: my grandparents have definitely been dismissive, but they haven't acted
- 16:36Speaker 1: on that dismissiveness. So my mom, I think, has been
- 16:40Speaker 1: good at sort of just explaining to them what's going
- 16:43Speaker 1: on and why it's really important for them to stay inside.
- 16:46Speaker 1: And what's been difficult for us to explain to them,
- 16:50Speaker 1: um my grandparents is why we can't be around them,
- 16:54Speaker 1: or why we have to be at a safe distance
- 16:56Speaker 1: from them, or why, um, you know, we wouldn't all
- 17:00Speaker 1: be in the same house. I think what my mom
- 17:02Speaker 1: really wanted for and what my mom really wanted for us,
- 17:05Speaker 1: was for all of us to be in the same
- 17:07Speaker 1: house and all hold up together under the same roof
- 17:11Speaker 1: the mother's dream. The mother's dream like we're in quarantine
- 17:16Speaker 1: and you have to stay in the house and definitely
- 17:19Speaker 1: with me not allowed to leave pert her dreams. So
- 17:26Speaker 1: but of course, like what we've been learning is the
- 17:29Speaker 1: familial spread is a big thing, and if we have
- 17:33Speaker 1: the option to not all be in one house at
- 17:36Speaker 1: the same time, that's the healthier option for us. I
- 17:39Speaker 1: think based on what I'm reading, and I think part
- 17:42Speaker 1: of why we wanted to do this quarantine confidential special
- 17:46Speaker 1: like pandemic cast is to talk about like all the
- 17:49Speaker 1: things we're learning as this goes. Because something I've noticed
- 17:54Speaker 1: is all of this language, all this vocabulary has been
- 17:58Speaker 1: introduced to lie are just very general way of talking now.
- 18:02Speaker 1: But I've seen like articles and graphs and explanations and
- 18:06Speaker 1: Twitter threads and all these different things describing and defining
- 18:11Speaker 1: quarantine versus self isolation, versus social distancing versus physical distancing.
- 18:16Speaker 1: And I felt, I feel like from one night to
- 18:19Speaker 1: the next there was like an expectation that we all
- 18:22Speaker 1: knew what all this stuff was. But it's like a
- 18:25Speaker 1: whole new like set of terminology that we were not
- 18:28Speaker 1: using at all before. Yeah, and there's just, like you said,
- 18:33Speaker 1: like an expectation that we're all supposed to be in
- 18:36Speaker 1: the know about this terminology. And it's still evolving. Like
- 18:42Speaker 1: last week it was social distancing, this week it's physical distancing,
- 18:46Speaker 1: because we're not encouraging folks to like isolate, you know,
- 18:50Speaker 1: like socially, Like we still want folks to call each
- 18:52Speaker 1: other and FaceTime into all of that, but we are
- 18:55Speaker 1: we are expecting folks to maintain a physical distance. So
- 18:58Speaker 1: now we're exactly so now we're using this terminology. So
- 19:03Speaker 1: it's going to keep changing, most likely in the next
- 19:05Speaker 1: couple of weeks. Yep Um, and the expectations and what
- 19:10Speaker 1: they tell us to do and what not to do,
- 19:12Speaker 1: like it's very rapid and it's hard to keep up with.
- 19:16Speaker 1: And I don't know, it's wild. I've been learning a
- 19:20Speaker 1: lot um about like the way that the health care
- 19:25Speaker 1: industry is so privatized to a point that it's like
- 19:28Speaker 1: suffocating all of us. The stuff with the masks insanity,
- 19:34Speaker 1: the gloves, the mass to protective gear, the lack of it. Right,
- 19:39Speaker 1: Like last night, I had sent Tomala this thing that
- 19:42Speaker 1: I saw on Twitter that a private hospital here in
- 19:46Speaker 1: so cal tweeted a link for folks to purchase masks
- 19:50Speaker 1: so that they could give them to their doctors. And
- 19:53Speaker 1: I'm like, Okay, I understand why our healthcare professionals need them.
- 19:57Speaker 1: That this is not what I'm fighting. I'm that you're
- 20:00Speaker 1: that a corporation, a multimillion dollar corporation, is asking individuals
- 20:05Speaker 1: to buy masks for their employees. I cannot wrap my
- 20:09Speaker 1: head around that, and how our federal government continues to
- 20:13Speaker 1: to not do anything right and it's literally failing millions
- 20:17Speaker 1: of people. And obviously I understand who are our president is,
- 20:21Speaker 1: so it makes sense. One percent makes sense. But I
- 20:25Speaker 1: still cannot wrap my head around these corporations asking individuals
- 20:29Speaker 1: please pay for this protective year for my employee. It's
- 20:34Speaker 1: mind boggling, It's ridiculous. I don't understand how we continue.
- 20:41Speaker 1: I mean, I think this is the last year of
- 20:46Speaker 1: like blind American exceptionalism and also ship and that narrative,
- 20:52Speaker 1: because how can we sit here and um, you know,
- 20:55Speaker 1: I was watching the news this morning and a doctor
- 20:58Speaker 1: from I don't know, some state, Becky. She was talking
- 21:00Speaker 1: about his hospital and how the Center for Disease Control
- 21:04Speaker 1: UM when those doctors at his as this man's hospital, asked,
- 21:07Speaker 1: what do we do about the protective year that we
- 21:10Speaker 1: don't have, and the CDC formally recommended to them, Oh,
- 21:13Speaker 1: you may want to use like handkerchiefs and things instead,
- 21:17Speaker 1: And this doctor was, like I was talking about how
- 21:20Speaker 1: he was just stunned and without words that this is
- 21:23Speaker 1: an official, formal c d C United States federal government recommendation.
- 21:29Speaker 1: That is some third world ship girl, honestly, honestly before
- 21:35Speaker 1: time in the jungle, right right right, and like even
- 21:41Speaker 1: how we have to like we as it, like the
- 21:43Speaker 1: United States has to. We're talking about converting like ships
- 21:48Speaker 1: into like hot like hospital type like triage centers, Like
- 21:52Speaker 1: we're creating triage centers and like the Colosseum, Like don't
- 21:55Speaker 1: quote me, I know that it's not the Colosseum, but
- 21:57Speaker 1: like that's like the mindset that we're in right now,
- 21:59Speaker 1: that we're going to create these like triage centers in
- 22:01Speaker 1: public spaces, which I understand there's a shortage of beds,
- 22:05Speaker 1: but I'm like, what kind of like first world nation
- 22:11Speaker 1: are we? You know, entrico MIAs obviously, Like what kind
- 22:16Speaker 1: of ship is that? It's ridiculous. I mean that we
- 22:21Speaker 1: don't already have enough of this protective gear and the
- 22:24Speaker 1: stuff that is needed to begin with that there, it's
- 22:28Speaker 1: out there, but it belongs to private companies and manufacturers.
- 22:32Speaker 1: And I'm like, where's the can we just buy it
- 22:33Speaker 1: all in bulk? It's sucked up? So here's some other
- 22:36Speaker 1: things that like we want to keep an eye on, right, Um, so,
- 22:39Speaker 1: how many of our friends and community members rely on
- 22:45Speaker 1: parties and Medicago's and pop ups and in person events,
- 22:50Speaker 1: you know, us included, Like we are involved in events
- 22:55Speaker 1: and all the university gigs, like any basicles peaking gig
- 23:00Speaker 1: this spring is now canceled, you know, So that's like
- 23:05Speaker 1: a reality for many folks. Yeah, um, you know so
- 23:10Speaker 1: just I mean what we refer to as the gig economy,
- 23:13Speaker 1: but anything creative, anything involving the public and nightlife and events.
- 23:18Speaker 1: And I'm concerned for the state of the arts, art
- 23:25Speaker 1: and culture and entertainment. What's gonna be, what's gonna happen
- 23:28Speaker 1: where we gonna be? Right, I know, school in the
- 23:34Speaker 1: fall I think about universities, Like is campus housing going
- 23:37Speaker 1: to be a thing? Yeah, there's so much I mean,
- 23:42Speaker 1: And like I saw this really great article about how
- 23:45Speaker 1: it was actually positive, Like it sounds like scary and negative,
- 23:49Speaker 1: but it's like we will never be the same once
- 23:52Speaker 1: this is over and so and it's by political and
- 23:55Speaker 1: so they talk about how folks are like predicting like
- 24:00Speaker 1: mindsets changing, so like our society moving from a very
- 24:04Speaker 1: individualistic society to more communal And also like we're all
- 24:09Speaker 1: going to have a little bit of an O. C.
- 24:12Speaker 1: D tendency meaning like incessant washing of hands and wiping
- 24:16Speaker 1: things down. Like there's gonna be things that we carry
- 24:18Speaker 1: with us based off of this experience, like for the
- 24:23Speaker 1: rest of our lives. So there's gonna be a shift
- 24:27Speaker 1: like culturally and societal wise based on this. So like
- 24:30Speaker 1: it it'll be really interesting to see how the movements,
- 24:33Speaker 1: how this is reflected in the movement spaces and the
- 24:36Speaker 1: party spaces, and like are people gonna be somewhat traumatized?
- 24:42Speaker 1: You know, and like especially if they lose someone really
- 24:44Speaker 1: close to them or someone that they know, Like how
- 24:46Speaker 1: is this going to change us? And so yeah, we're
- 24:50Speaker 1: literally living through history right now. You know, as corny
- 24:54Speaker 1: as that may sound, but like it's true. It's true,
- 24:57Speaker 1: and like twenty years from now, thirty years from now,
- 25:00Speaker 1: like the way our administration handles this is like not
- 25:04Speaker 1: going to be forgotten either, you know, like we're going
- 25:06Speaker 1: to be living through the repercussions of it. It's very true.
- 25:11Speaker 1: I think that a lot of it, a lot of
- 25:13Speaker 1: the societal changes hopefully will be good ones. I hope, So,
- 25:17Speaker 1: I hope, I hope. Um, we'll see what happens. But
- 25:21Speaker 1: it's like this is our this is like our plagued
- 25:26Speaker 1: you know what I mean. This is our moment, this
- 25:28Speaker 1: is our moment, moment. It's true, what happens true, yeah,
- 25:34Speaker 1: because there have been like natural disasters that have affected
- 25:37Speaker 1: different parts of this of the nation, right Um, but
- 25:43Speaker 1: like a pandemic like this of this magnitude affecting everyone globally,
- 25:49Speaker 1: like it's been decades. Yeah yeah, yeah, I mean certainly
- 25:56Speaker 1: one for the books. Um, we'll see how it last.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Uh yeah, I have. I think it's so it's wild too,
- 26:08Speaker 1: because it's almost like we were I don't know, we
- 26:13Speaker 1: the royal we as a culture, you know, both praising
- 26:19Speaker 1: the way that the internet social media helps us to connect,
- 26:23Speaker 1: but also right kind of being sad about how it
- 26:28Speaker 1: separates us, right, people being on their phones, people being
- 26:31Speaker 1: you know, online all the time. It's like we were
- 26:35Speaker 1: in a weird way prepping globally or something like this,
- 26:41Speaker 1: because I don't know if there's ever been a time
- 26:43Speaker 1: before where we would have been able to maintain like
- 26:46Speaker 1: this level of interaction and connectivity during a shut a
- 26:50Speaker 1: lockdown like this. Absolutely yeah, okay, And like that made
- 26:55Speaker 1: me think about something like personal that happened while I
- 26:58Speaker 1: was on my trip, So I would like prior to this,
- 27:01Speaker 1: like I plan on having like a full on like
- 27:04Speaker 1: debrief on my trip, but like no, you know, it's
- 27:08Speaker 1: like it's over a past. But I did want to
- 27:10Speaker 1: share that I like connected with my dad's eldest brother.
- 27:15Speaker 1: So I like found him, like nobody had his number,
- 27:18Speaker 1: and I literally had to go walking like I had
- 27:21Speaker 1: to find somewhat of an address like leaven Lak. That's it.
- 27:27Speaker 1: That's all, that's all that I knew. And then little
- 27:30Speaker 1: little so I literally went up to strangers and was like,
- 27:35Speaker 1: do you know the senior? And so I like eventually
- 27:38Speaker 1: find him and it's like this whole thing. But I
- 27:42Speaker 1: find him and now I'm friends with his son, who's
- 27:45Speaker 1: my primo. I'm friends with him on Facebook and so
- 27:48Speaker 1: now like so like he called me today and was like,
- 27:51Speaker 1: how are you doing? Right? So we were talking. It
- 27:59Speaker 1: just like was like without this kind of connection, like
- 28:03Speaker 1: social media technological connection, like I wouldn't be able to
- 28:07Speaker 1: talk to this pretty moo and like find my father's brother. Right,
- 28:11Speaker 1: So like those kinds of moments, it's like this is amazing, right,
- 28:15Speaker 1: and you really can have this connection with folks because
- 28:18Speaker 1: of this tool that we have, right you know. I
- 28:23Speaker 1: mean we wouldn't have been able to like maintain a
- 28:27Speaker 1: podcast right if there was a lockdown and it had
- 28:30Speaker 1: been we were doing this like in the early two
- 28:32Speaker 1: thousands or the nineties, Like we wouldn't have been able
- 28:35Speaker 1: to do this to keep recording. Our studio space is
- 28:39Speaker 1: shut down, right, um, because if you think about it,
- 28:44Speaker 1: it's a confined space and everyone is touching the same
- 28:46Speaker 1: equipment and it's Mike's close to the mouth and the
- 28:49Speaker 1: whole thing. So we're shifting and we're figuring it out.
- 28:53Speaker 1: And we had to figure out our zoom meeting and
- 28:55Speaker 1: how to record, and we realized, like we don't really
- 28:58Speaker 1: do video content at home. We're not YouTubers, so now
- 29:02Speaker 1: we need to figure out like our home like recording
- 29:05Speaker 1: what is our home studio? Right? Um, Yeah, it's it's
- 29:12Speaker 1: a lot of adapting right now and and just being
- 29:16Speaker 1: okay with that and getting comfortable with that. With adapting
- 29:21Speaker 1: and nothing but change. The not knowing, yeah, the not
- 29:24Speaker 1: knowing and yeah, and there can be a lot of
- 29:27Speaker 1: anxiety in that, you know. And I think just acknowledging
- 29:31Speaker 1: that helps, Like things are not going to be normal
- 29:34Speaker 1: right now, you know. It's it's a new kind of normal.
- 29:38Speaker 1: It's a new kind of normal. It's like definitely a
- 29:40Speaker 1: pause on unlike on civilization, which I think in many
- 29:46Speaker 1: ways can be like refreshing to the planet being right.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Like I've seen definitely photos and things circulating about how
- 29:55Speaker 1: the air is so much cleaner and the water is
- 29:57Speaker 1: so much cleaner. Already just with the past couple of
- 30:00Speaker 1: weeks of people being inside and business is being closed
- 30:03Speaker 1: and just shipped slowing down, you know. So I don't know. Yeah,
- 30:09Speaker 1: and we live in such a fast like especially here
- 30:12Speaker 1: in l A. Well, I've heard New Yorkers say that
- 30:14Speaker 1: l A is like slow to them, but like for us,
- 30:16Speaker 1: like l a like really fast, like we you know
- 30:22Speaker 1: it's to me, it's really fast. So like it's definitely
- 30:24Speaker 1: a different kind of pace right now, because it has
- 30:27Speaker 1: to be, you know it is. I mean, I'm I've
- 30:32Speaker 1: been thinking about it right like, and the past a
- 30:36Speaker 1: few years we have just been all over the place
- 30:40Speaker 1: like go go, go, go go, just bouncing from one
- 30:43Speaker 1: thing to the next and multiple like jobs in a
- 30:48Speaker 1: day and appointments and interviews and traveling and multiple states
- 30:53Speaker 1: in the weekends and all this crazy shit, and like
- 30:56Speaker 1: to slow down And is that really normal for us
- 30:59Speaker 1: or help for us to be on like that all
- 31:02Speaker 1: the time? You know, truly slow it down. Yeah, we've
- 31:07Speaker 1: been forced to slow down, like you and I, I
- 31:10Speaker 1: mean everybody in general, but I mean like you and
- 31:12Speaker 1: I in the way that we were living our lives
- 31:14Speaker 1: with like two full time jobs and personal lives, social
- 31:18Speaker 1: lives and then traveling thrown into that mix as well. Insane. Yeah,
- 31:24Speaker 1: it's a lot. Yeah, And I think like as we
- 31:28Speaker 1: progress as like podcasters and producers, we are definitely more
- 31:34Speaker 1: um cognizant of like when we can say no and
- 31:37Speaker 1: then it's ok to say no and well now we've
- 31:40Speaker 1: been forced to say no because we have to. Um.
- 31:44Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean going back to adapting. Like in
- 31:47Speaker 1: a way, it's like the show must go on in
- 31:49Speaker 1: the sense of life. We're gonna keep creating content in
- 31:52Speaker 1: the in ways that we can. It may not be
- 31:54Speaker 1: the same, um, and we may have to put some
- 31:57Speaker 1: things on hold until the future and told the Fall
- 32:00Speaker 1: and all of that, but um, yeah, we're still going
- 32:03Speaker 1: to be bringing content to y'all. And that's like the
- 32:05Speaker 1: one of the really great things of the podcast is
- 32:08Speaker 1: that you can do remotely. Yeah. Yeah, and um, you know,
- 32:14Speaker 1: so speaking of content that we're gonna bring to our audience,
- 32:18Speaker 1: to our look on what is um, we shot a
- 32:22Speaker 1: short film. Yeah. It is also a sort of proof
- 32:25Speaker 1: of concept for this story called um lookith as Anonymous, right.
- 32:31Speaker 1: So last year with our crew and our friends and
- 32:35Speaker 1: our community, we shot like a ten minute short UM
- 32:41Speaker 1: about this post apocalyptic society and the name of this
- 32:46Speaker 1: apocalypse that like, um, the story like takes place and
- 32:50Speaker 1: is called the Patreopocalypse. And the idea is that in
- 32:53Speaker 1: Lookitha's Anonymous, right, Um, the Patreopocalypse, toxic masculinity has caused
- 32:57Speaker 1: the downfall society, the collapse of economy and technology and
- 33:01Speaker 1: all this crazy ship right which sounds like right now right,
- 33:04Speaker 1: So basically what we're living right now. We predicted this
- 33:08Speaker 1: um in Loki those Anonymous, so we um put out
- 33:12Speaker 1: a trailer for Looks Anonymous on the Instagram. We showed
- 33:17Speaker 1: the full short film at our last look I Thought
- 33:20Speaker 1: Alive a podcast party back in November at the Paramount.
- 33:23Speaker 1: So what we're gonna do is, because everybody's stick at
- 33:26Speaker 1: home and um have you all now have time to
- 33:29Speaker 1: consume all the content, We're gonna put out our short
- 33:32Speaker 1: LOOKI Does Anonymous the whole short film on i G
- 33:35Speaker 1: t v and YouTube this week. So um, we will
- 33:40Speaker 1: be posting, we'll be talking about it. We're gonna host
- 33:42Speaker 1: like a viewing party basically on Instagram so we can
- 33:46Speaker 1: walk watch together and talk about it on I G Live.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Um it's gonna be cute. Yeah, absolutely, and yeah we're
- 33:53Speaker 1: gonna be We're jumping on the IG live train, UM
- 33:57Speaker 1: so that we can chat about the film and just
- 33:59Speaker 1: look a thought our radio in general and answer any
- 34:02Speaker 1: listener questions they all may have. So yeah, we're excited.
- 34:05Speaker 1: We like we're thinking about um prior to this, like
- 34:09Speaker 1: how we can contribute to the art world or just
- 34:13Speaker 1: the creative world right now because art and creativity is
- 34:17Speaker 1: so important, especially during times of of dress and stress
- 34:20Speaker 1: and all of that. So this is our offering to
- 34:23Speaker 1: our listeners and to the folks have in supporting us. Um.
- 34:27Speaker 1: We had actually delayed on making this public or free
- 34:30Speaker 1: even because we did want to set it behind a paywall,
- 34:33Speaker 1: because we invested in this project. We pay every single
- 34:38Speaker 1: person that worked on it crew wise. UM, we gifted
- 34:42Speaker 1: our cast with like products and and other things, and UM,
- 34:46Speaker 1: it was really a labor of love and something that
- 34:48Speaker 1: we hope to continue. So we did consider for many
- 34:51Speaker 1: months putting it behind a paywall. Um, but because of
- 34:55Speaker 1: you know, the current situation that everybody is in, we
- 34:58Speaker 1: wanted to shed some lie, some positivity and like share
- 35:02Speaker 1: our art with y'all exactly. Yeah, so that's the goal. Um.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Looky TH's anonymous and so many different community members worked
- 35:10Speaker 1: on it, and a lot of community sponsors, right so
- 35:13Speaker 1: from Bella Donna to Gella Getsa, um Homegirls Beauty, Um,
- 35:21Speaker 1: who else be the cosmetics we filmed at both eighteen
- 35:26Speaker 1: nine and with your Beauty Collective. Yeah, so they all
- 35:30Speaker 1: either donated projects, food accessories, lent to space. Hobby Mendoza
- 35:37Speaker 1: was our our producer who helped us put it together.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Chava A k A, Jose Salvador Sanchez, and Michelle Morrow
- 35:47Speaker 1: our video photo team. And then we've had a really
- 35:49Speaker 1: amazing cast of all kinds of DOSI people that we
- 35:53Speaker 1: all love. Latin X traders, like, most of your faves
- 35:56Speaker 1: are are in it? Your I g phaves sores, yeah,
- 36:08Speaker 1: scat yes, so yeah, we just want to share that
- 36:12Speaker 1: with y'all and it will be out later this week
- 36:14Speaker 1: and like, yeah, we're excited to be to see your baby. Yes, yes,
- 36:18Speaker 1: absolutely tell us what you think. Yes, leave a little comment,
- 36:23Speaker 1: give us a little like I don't forget to continue
- 36:27Speaker 1: loving us out loud, especially in these ridiculous times. Yes,
- 36:32Speaker 1: now more than ever, it's important to really, really really
- 36:35Speaker 1: support your favorite creators. Um Uh. Some folks that we
- 36:40Speaker 1: love that definitely need support are the folks of Guion Collective. Um.
- 36:46Speaker 1: You know, they throw parties and they throw parties all
- 36:49Speaker 1: over the country and that's the work, that's what they do.
- 36:52Speaker 1: And parties are not happening. Parties are not happening. Yeah. Additionally,
- 36:58Speaker 1: like is closed right now, but you can buy from
- 37:02Speaker 1: them online or buy a gift card. Um. And also
- 37:05Speaker 1: Mina one of the co owners. She runs a he
- 37:07Speaker 1: latina business UM called he latin X, which is really cute.
- 37:13Speaker 1: And I just ordered a he Latina latina from her
- 37:17Speaker 1: last week and it was so good. It did not
- 37:20Speaker 1: last two days in my house. Everybody ate it. My
- 37:23Speaker 1: parents loved it. So um she's actually doing like pickup
- 37:27Speaker 1: orders so you can go and like Nico brought it
- 37:30Speaker 1: to me with his little gloves on and just like
- 37:32Speaker 1: placed it in my car, you know, so like no
- 37:35Speaker 1: contact pickup. So yeah. So like support support, support support.
- 37:40Speaker 1: They're like local artists, thank you so much to the
- 37:43Speaker 1: local community well and beyond. So yeah, definitely consider donating
- 37:49Speaker 1: purchasing from all the folks we mentioned. Um what else, Yeah,
- 37:57Speaker 1: I mean as far as other things demic wise, people
- 38:01Speaker 1: to support stuff like that, your local like ethnic markets,
- 38:04Speaker 1: I would say, and your local like ethnic restaurants that
- 38:08Speaker 1: are still open. I know that some of the small
- 38:10Speaker 1: like leftinol Um restaurants are at least doing delivery or pickup.
- 38:16Speaker 1: I've seen signs, you know, so like the small um
- 38:20Speaker 1: you know, POC owned markets. Um. I have found are
- 38:26Speaker 1: less likely to be sold out of stuff. I've just
- 38:28Speaker 1: been going to my local like Central American Market, um
- 38:32Speaker 1: to pick up what I need fruits and vegetables and basics,
- 38:36Speaker 1: and um, the big stores are just impossible. And there
- 38:42Speaker 1: are like lines out front out the door like it's
- 38:46Speaker 1: the club and it's the wildest thing. I never thought
- 38:48Speaker 1: I would see a line outside of Smart and Final,
- 38:50Speaker 1: Like it's so bizarre. It's so bizarre. Um, I mean,
- 38:54Speaker 1: I understand that people need things, understand, but I'm like
- 38:59Speaker 1: everybody going to the store like doesn't make it doesn't
- 39:03Speaker 1: make any like hygienic sense at all, you know, like
- 39:07Speaker 1: the bombarding of it and the wildest things that I
- 39:11Speaker 1: have seen. So I went to Food for Less, right,
- 39:13Speaker 1: my local Food for Less, and they had put out
- 39:18Speaker 1: like a big thing of um, you know, disinfecting wipes.
- 39:22Speaker 1: But it's one of those where you pull one out
- 39:25Speaker 1: and it's serrated, so you have to pull it off
- 39:28Speaker 1: and then use it to the next person can pull
- 39:30Speaker 1: off the next one. People were just like going and
- 39:35Speaker 1: like rubbing their hands on it and then like not
- 39:38Speaker 1: tearing it off, and someone would come and just like
- 39:41Speaker 1: pull it down and then use the next part above
- 39:44Speaker 1: that hasn't been touched. And then when people did, I know,
- 39:47Speaker 1: and I'm like waiting in line to enter the store,
- 39:50Speaker 1: right and I'm like, what the fuck? And then I
- 39:55Speaker 1: and then finally someone does start, you know, wipping off,
- 40:00Speaker 1: tearing off sheets of the disinfecting wives. But then people
- 40:05Speaker 1: started just throwing them on the floor next trash. I
- 40:10Speaker 1: felt like there wasn't a trash can bage just through
- 40:13Speaker 1: the wipes next to the god. And so in that moment,
- 40:18Speaker 1: I just really felt a lack of hope right us
- 40:24Speaker 1: because of things like that. Just seeing how people handle
- 40:27Speaker 1: stuff is just very mind boggling. Yeah, one thing that
- 40:30Speaker 1: I've noticed is that when people wear gloves, they're then
- 40:34Speaker 1: they're like touching like everything that they shouldn't be. And
- 40:37Speaker 1: I'm like, just because you have the gloves on, like,
- 40:40Speaker 1: doesn't mean you can touch everything and then touch your face,
- 40:43Speaker 1: like it makes sense. So my new thing right now
- 40:47Speaker 1: is that I take the debit car that I'm going
- 40:51Speaker 1: to use outside, removing from my wallet, I put it
- 40:55Speaker 1: in my pocket. Um, I leave my purse and everything
- 40:58Speaker 1: in the car, and then I go into the grocery store,
- 41:01Speaker 1: putting on my gloves of course, and then I go
- 41:03Speaker 1: and I do my shopping and then load up my
- 41:06Speaker 1: car and then remove my gloves and then throw them away. Yeah,
- 41:10Speaker 1: and so that way you're not like tempted to like
- 41:12Speaker 1: look at your phone if you hear it vibrate or
- 41:15Speaker 1: you hear it ring, and then that way you're not
- 41:17Speaker 1: digging into your purse to get your card out with
- 41:20Speaker 1: your your infected gloves or your use gloves. Right. So
- 41:25Speaker 1: that's like one tip is like pull out the card
- 41:27Speaker 1: first before you go into the store that you're going
- 41:29Speaker 1: to use, and keep it in your pocket. That's a
- 41:33Speaker 1: good tip. Yeah, that's a good tip. And especially because
- 41:36Speaker 1: like I've gone to a couple of different stores and
- 41:40Speaker 1: a lot of people are not wearing gloves, cashiers are
- 41:43Speaker 1: not wearing gloves and do not have masks on. Yeah,
- 41:47Speaker 1: I became I haven't seen I've seen gloves more, but
- 41:49Speaker 1: I haven't seen any masks used really at all. Or
- 41:53Speaker 1: if I do, if I do see the mask used,
- 41:55Speaker 1: people are like putting them on and off, and I'm like,
- 41:58Speaker 1: that's not how it were. Once you touch it, it's done,
- 42:02Speaker 1: like it's done. You have to throw it away, and
- 42:04Speaker 1: putting you one on. I guess I all that that
- 42:06Speaker 1: also goes back to what we were said, does go
- 42:07Speaker 1: back to like what we were saying, there's an assumption
- 42:10Speaker 1: that you're supposed to know how to put these masks
- 42:13Speaker 1: on right or how to take gloves off properly. And
- 42:15Speaker 1: like I am in the health care field, so I
- 42:17Speaker 1: do know these are things that are common knowledge to me. Um,
- 42:20Speaker 1: but yeah, for folks that have no experience using these
- 42:24Speaker 1: types of things, these protective year before, like you're just
- 42:27Speaker 1: not going to know, yes, And let me say this right,
- 42:31Speaker 1: like the not knowing peace. It's we're like really seeing
- 42:36Speaker 1: in real time how people in many ways do not
- 42:40Speaker 1: like we don't know how to take care of ourselves,
- 42:42Speaker 1: like as a just like as a country, Like we
- 42:46Speaker 1: joke every once in a while on Twitter there's oh
- 42:49Speaker 1: my god, these people say they don't wash their legs
- 42:52Speaker 1: in the shower. I'm shocked these people say that they
- 42:56Speaker 1: don't wash their ass or they don't they don't wipe
- 42:59Speaker 1: their asked because then the other like these things we
- 43:03Speaker 1: have seen how people are not hygienic, like in this
- 43:06Speaker 1: sick of ways before this, before this, yeah, and now,
- 43:11Speaker 1: we were never equipped. We were never equipped for them. No, no,
- 43:16Speaker 1: never it's so weird. Like I saw when I was
- 43:19Speaker 1: at the airport coming back, when I was leaving Lima. Um,
- 43:23Speaker 1: I saw someone barefoot in the airport and I was like,
- 43:27Speaker 1: I don't understand, Like how walking around in Lima he
- 43:32Speaker 1: took off Okay, he took off his shoes when he
- 43:34Speaker 1: sat down, but then he had his feet up on
- 43:37Speaker 1: the seats that other people are going to sit on,
- 43:39Speaker 1: And I was like, why are you doing this? Like
- 43:43Speaker 1: what is the point? Are we in living room? Like
- 43:46Speaker 1: that's all right? And I just kept looking like why
- 43:49Speaker 1: is this company? Shoes off in public places? Is a
- 43:53Speaker 1: really weird thing that's always bothered me anyway. Yep, So
