- 0:01Speaker 1: It's time to talk to Utah quarterback Devin Dampier. This
- 0:04Speaker 1: is Dishing with Devin on the Sean O'Connell Show. Brought
- 0:08Speaker 1: to you by Colligan Water, Salt Lake City, America First
- 0:11Speaker 1: Credit Union, and Valley Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. Now here's
- 0:15Speaker 1: OC with Ute Star signal caller Devin Dampier on your
- 0:18Speaker 1: home of the Utes and your home for football. ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 0:26Speaker 2: It is that time again on the Sean O'Connell show
- 0:28Speaker 2: edition with dev, our conversation with QB one brought to
- 0:32Speaker 2: you by America. First credit union, Culligan water of salt
- 0:35Speaker 2: Lake city and Valley plumbing, heating, cooling, and excavation.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Devin damn pier three and Oh, how you feeling, sir?
- 0:44Speaker 4: Always better after a win.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Not just a win, a shutout.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Now, I know the credit goes to the defense for
- 0:52Speaker 2: the shutout part, but everybody gets to enjoy that.
- 0:55Speaker 3: It's nice to see a goose egg on the other side.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Yeah. I don't know the last time that's happened, but
- 1:00Speaker 4: pretty impressive.
- 1:02Speaker 3: We looked it up.
- 1:02Speaker 2: The last FBS opponent, so non-FCS opponent, the last FBS
- 1:07Speaker 2: shutout was 2019.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Dang. So seven years ago.
- 1:12Speaker 4: Yeah. That's crazy.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Right? I mean, that means.
- 1:16Speaker 2: like potentially two whole classes of football player went through
- 1:19Speaker 2: the university of Utah without blanking an opponent.
- 1:22Speaker 3: And you guys did it last Saturday.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Yeah. That's shout out the defense for sure.
- 1:26Speaker 5: Cause especially even like with my fumble, I put them
- 1:29Speaker 5: in a rough situation and Ram gets a pig, like
- 1:33Speaker 5: boys capitalize every opportunity.
- 1:35Speaker 4: So shout out them.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Well, I wasn't going to mention it, but you did
- 1:38Speaker 3: the fumble. Tell me what happened. Tell me how it felt.
- 1:41Speaker 3: You know, how did it come about?
- 1:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:44Speaker 5: Um, I mean, I'm always disappointed in myself when I
- 1:46Speaker 5: fumble the ball, but it was something we brought up
- 1:51Speaker 5: this week, just ball security while falling. When you fall,
- 1:55Speaker 5: especially forward, your arms are going to brace you from falling,
- 2:00Speaker 5: so it's just a way of cradling and kind of
- 2:03Speaker 5: laying on your shoulder rather than trying to brace yourself
- 2:05Speaker 5: with your arms.
- 2:08Speaker 3: That's the only negative thing we have to say today.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Just a review.
- 2:12Speaker 1: No.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Uh, so look, there was, this was a fun game
- 2:16Speaker 2: and it's a game where there's some familiarity.
- 2:18Speaker 3: There's crossover, right?
- 2:20Speaker 2: Uh, we asked you last week what it was going
- 2:22Speaker 2: to be like seeing Bronco Mendenhall and some of the
- 2:24Speaker 2: coaches that were on that New Mexico staff. Did you
- 2:26Speaker 2: have a chance to catch up and say hello? And
- 2:29Speaker 2: like you said, you were going to love a Bronco
- 2:30Speaker 2: and expect him to do the same thing. Did that
- 2:32Speaker 2: actually happen?
- 2:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:34Speaker 5: Um, I mean, I won't claim anything. I don't know
- 2:37Speaker 5: for sure. But it looked like he honestly waited. He
- 2:40Speaker 5: didn't get off the field until I said something to
- 2:42Speaker 5: him because he was kind of just looking there.
- 2:45Speaker 4: I think he was looking for me. So, yeah, I'm glad.
- 2:48Speaker 4: I was just excited to find him, too, after I
- 2:51Speaker 4: dapped up a couple of the players.
- 2:52Speaker 5: It was a very emotional hug he gave me. We
- 2:57Speaker 5: bonded a lot when I was at New Mexico and
- 3:00Speaker 5: things like that. So, just good to see a good
- 3:03Speaker 5: person like him.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Hey.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Before the game happened, he had nice things to say.
- 3:08Speaker 2: After the game happened, he had nice things to say.
- 3:09Speaker 2: I actually talked with a couple of coaches on the
- 3:11Speaker 2: staff and like, you always hear respect from opposing coaches
- 3:17Speaker 2: about good players like yourself, but to hear like genuine
- 3:20Speaker 2: love and affection for a player because of the relationship
- 3:23Speaker 2: and because you know them, it's part of the new
- 3:24Speaker 2: landscape of college football. But talking to those guys, there's
- 3:28Speaker 2: a man, Dev is good. He's better now than when
- 3:31Speaker 2: we had him in New Mexico too.
- 3:32Speaker 3: So yeah.
- 3:33Speaker 2: You know, that, that, that's really an interesting dynamic for
- 3:36Speaker 2: me that that coaching staff knows you as a player,
- 3:39Speaker 2: but also knows you as a human being. And it's like,
- 3:42Speaker 2: even though they wanted to beat you, seemed like they're
- 3:44Speaker 2: also kind of impressed and happy for your success.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:47Speaker 5: No, I always try to surround myself and like, that's
- 3:51Speaker 5: kind of the coaches I pick to play under is
- 3:53Speaker 5: the coaches that care about more than just the game
- 3:56Speaker 5: and all that. So not saying I didn't expect it,
- 3:59Speaker 5: but like just how much we've been through and, just
- 4:03Speaker 5: knowing who they were, you know, that was the reason
- 4:04Speaker 5: why I stayed at New Mexico my second year and,
- 4:07Speaker 5: you know, got to know them pretty well.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Your guy Braden Pagan went off in this game. Now,
- 4:17Speaker 2: I don't know if that's something that you guys planned
- 4:21Speaker 2: is a corny way to say it because, of course,
- 4:23Speaker 2: you're always planning to have big games and a couple
- 4:25Speaker 2: touchdowns and eight catches for 122 yards. But, that's also
- 4:30Speaker 2: his former team. He came down from Utah state and
- 4:34Speaker 2: I didn't hear much, but I saw, you know, there
- 4:35Speaker 2: was a little extracurricular conversation, probably good fun, whatever. Uh,
- 4:39Speaker 2: did it seem to you in practice and maybe during
- 4:42Speaker 2: the game that this one meant a little extra something
- 4:44Speaker 2: special for Brayden?
- 4:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:46Speaker 5: Um, definitely Brayden and, uh, Mack G, you know, we
- 4:49Speaker 5: kind of knew they just came from there. This game
- 4:52Speaker 5: was going to mean a lot to them to be
- 4:54Speaker 5: able to script some and, you know, get things to
- 4:56Speaker 5: work for sure. So, uh, I mean, BP, I think
- 5:01Speaker 5: he's shown that, you know, he's our one receiver.
- 5:03Speaker 4: He's that guy.
- 5:04Speaker 5: And personally, you know, he told me, he was like,
- 5:09Speaker 5: if there's any point where it's one-on-one, throw me the ball.
- 5:12Speaker 5: So kind of just that mentality of him also, though.
- 5:16Speaker 5: He wanted it this game. And, you know, every situation,
- 5:20Speaker 5: he's definitely capitalizing on it.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Okay.
- 5:24Speaker 2: So one of the touchdown passes you threw to him,
- 5:28Speaker 2: the play before– You got pressured and I think had
- 5:31Speaker 2: to throw it away or something. And I think it
- 5:34Speaker 2: was a backer was chirping. You would run like 30
- 5:38Speaker 2: yards back behind the line of scrimmage or whatever and
- 5:40Speaker 2: to the Utah State sideline. And he was chirping and
- 5:44Speaker 2: talking to you and you were talking back. And then
- 5:46Speaker 2: the very next play, you found Braden Pagan for a
- 5:50Speaker 2: long touchdown pass.
- 5:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:52Speaker 2: And I think, correct me if I'm wrong, I think
- 5:55Speaker 2: you found him again and maybe said a little something.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Now.
- 5:59Speaker 2: That's how it goes, Battle of the Brothers, right? But
- 6:02Speaker 2: please give me some insight into both ends of that conversation.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:11Speaker 5: Again, Scali was telling us beforehand, everybody keep your composure.
- 6:14Speaker 5: And I feel like I was keeping my composure for
- 6:16Speaker 5: the most part of the first half.
- 6:18Speaker 4: And then.
- 6:20Speaker 5: I got a club to my face mask or hand
- 6:24Speaker 5: to my face mask, and then he was talking trash,
- 6:27Speaker 5: and we got the ref like, You didn't get caught at. So,
- 6:31Speaker 5: and then we get to that drive, and, yeah, I
- 6:35Speaker 5: think I threw the ball out or something. And then
- 6:38Speaker 5: it was just the fact they were like, they thought
- 6:39Speaker 5: they had me or something. They were like, yeah, like,
- 6:41Speaker 5: we're on that. Like, you can't do nothing against us.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Which, like, I get it if it was a sack or, like,
- 6:48Speaker 2: a true negative play.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Like, let a defense celebrate or whatever. I was laughing.
- 6:53Speaker 2: I was sitting with one of my former teammates from Utah,
- 6:56Speaker 2: and we're laughing because, like, He basically ran you out
- 7:00Speaker 2: of bounds, you threw the ball away, and it's just like.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Yeah, he tripped at the wrong guy. I was hot.
- 7:05Speaker 3: I was like, what are you.
- 7:07Speaker 2: That's not a play to celebrate and talk trash on
- 7:09Speaker 2: the quarterback.
- 7:09Speaker 3: But anyway, and then the very next play was like, gotcha.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Well, yeah.
- 7:15Speaker 5: I looked at the ref again. I was like, are
- 7:16Speaker 5: you not seeing it? I think, like, not only were
- 7:19Speaker 5: they talking trash, they were, like, bumping me while they
- 7:21Speaker 5: were doing it.
- 7:22Speaker 4: I'm like, ref, are we serious? Like, I'm getting harassed.
- 7:25Speaker 4: I was, all right, but... So then, next play, BP was...
- 7:30Speaker 4: One-on-one with the corner. Yeah.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:32Speaker 4: As soon as I let that ball go, I kind
- 7:34Speaker 4: of knew BP was going to go get up there
- 7:36Speaker 4: and get it. Yeah. I don't know what I said,
- 7:39Speaker 4: but some words definitely came out.
- 7:41Speaker 3: I don't know if I believe that. It doesn't know
- 7:44Speaker 3: what he said on that one, but it's okay.
- 7:46Speaker 4: I blacked out. I was hot. I was in the moment.
- 7:50Speaker 3: We had another big run, by the way. I always
- 7:54Speaker 3: read off the stats.
- 7:54Speaker 4: 22-32, 253-10.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Just under eight yards per completion, two touchdowns, no interceptions.
- 8:01Speaker 2: When you went back, you watched your own film, not
- 8:03Speaker 2: just those highlight plays, but you know, the, the everyday play,
- 8:07Speaker 2: so to speak. Did you feel like this was the
- 8:09Speaker 2: execution you wanted from yourself in the game?
- 8:11Speaker 5: Um, from a past standpoint, I would say, yeah, there
- 8:14Speaker 5: was a couple, um, there's early, early down motions that
- 8:18Speaker 5: I forgot or, uh, this decision-making on handing the ball
- 8:22Speaker 5: off or not. I could have been cleaner on, but, um,
- 8:26Speaker 5: That pass game was pretty solid. One of my better
- 8:28Speaker 5: games I've had in that area of the game.
- 8:33Speaker 2: What was Utah State doing well against the inside run?
- 8:38Speaker 2: You know, Wayshon didn't really break any big ones inside
- 8:41Speaker 2: the tackles, and obviously Bray.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Had the big one that went around the edge.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Wayshon had a huge one called back, so maybe our
- 8:48Speaker 2: conversation would be different, but You got to give credit
- 8:52Speaker 2: to the Aggies. That is one area leading into the
- 8:54Speaker 2: game we were talking about. This is something they're very
- 8:56Speaker 2: good at. Defending the run is maybe the only thing
- 8:58Speaker 2: they're very good at this year. And while the team
- 9:02Speaker 2: finished with five yards of carry, there were a lot
- 9:04Speaker 2: of two- and three-yard runs where those could be considered
- 9:07Speaker 2: defensive wins.
- 9:07Speaker 3: What were they doing well against the run?
- 9:10Speaker 5: Yeah, we've seen that from when they play Washington right
- 9:13Speaker 5: before us. Yeah, that's just something they're dialed in on,
- 9:19Speaker 5: on stopping the run. And just also, I mean, that's
- 9:23Speaker 5: Bronco's mentality. Even when I played under him, it's to
- 9:26Speaker 5: be tough. It's to win in the box. Make sure
- 9:30Speaker 5: those guys are prepared to win in the box in
- 9:32Speaker 5: any situation. And Maggie talked about that going into the game.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Even he knows the culture, too. That's something they thrive in.
- 9:44Speaker 2: We talked about this last week. We'll probably talk about
- 9:46Speaker 2: this every single week. You get a few of the
- 9:49Speaker 2: Really interesting, fascinating plays, the unique kind of stuff with
- 9:52Speaker 2: the two quarterback system.
- 9:56Speaker 3: And, you know, we saw a little bit of that.
- 9:59Speaker 3: I think maybe less.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Of that in the Utah State game than we saw
- 10:03Speaker 2: against Arkansas was that a by design thing or are
- 10:05Speaker 2: those plays situational and the situations didn't arise where you
- 10:11Speaker 2: were going to use like the really super creative stuff.
- 10:14Speaker 5: Yeah I would say it's kind of situational again like
- 10:18Speaker 5: the defense doesn't kind of Show us that we should
- 10:20Speaker 5: do it, then, yeah, we don't run it.
- 10:24Speaker 4: We go to our other things. Our offense is so versatile, so.
- 10:29Speaker 5: We just try to take whatever makes sense.
- 10:35Speaker 2: What day was it, James? Was it Thursday or Friday
- 10:38Speaker 2: on the show last week? We were trying to come
- 10:39Speaker 2: up with a catchy name for the two-quarterback thing, and
- 10:43Speaker 2: I put it out on the text line.
- 10:45Speaker 3: I put it out on Twitter. I'm like, what should
- 10:46Speaker 3: we be calling this thing?
- 10:48Speaker 2: And we got a bunch of play on words with
- 10:51Speaker 2: the bird and the spider. What we decided was the
- 10:57Speaker 2: favorite is two quarters, two quarterbacks. That's 50 cent. Same
- 11:01Speaker 2: guy came in. He said, well, call it the 50
- 11:03Speaker 2: cent or the half dollar. I was like, half dollar
- 11:04Speaker 2: is a pretty... The half dollar.
- 11:07Speaker 3: The half dollar offense sounds pretty awesome.
- 11:10Speaker 1: But.
- 11:12Speaker 3: What do you like best?
- 11:13Speaker 2: Is there like, I mean, I don't know what the
- 11:14Speaker 2: package is called, but if it's going to get nicknamed,
- 11:18Speaker 2: do you want like, what was the other one?
- 11:19Speaker 3: Spider Hawk? They kept calling it.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Spider Hawk. Because you're the spider.
- 11:22Speaker 3: He's a bird.
- 11:23Speaker 2: The Hawk is the Utah mascot, whatever. Got a lot
- 11:27Speaker 2: of Spider Hawk. Someone brought in like the native language
- 11:31Speaker 2: word for spider and hawk. I mean, there was a
- 11:33Speaker 2: lot of creativity going on.
- 11:34Speaker 4: That's hilarious.
- 11:35Speaker 2: I like 50 cent or half dollar the best, but
- 11:38Speaker 2: what do you like as a nickname for that offense?
- 11:40Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Those are all new.
- 11:42Speaker 5: Um, bird definitely has, I think three or four formations
- 11:46Speaker 5: named after him for him to get in with different personnels.
- 11:49Speaker 3: All right. So we'll have to brainstorm on that.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Yeah. I'm about to get back to that though.
- 11:53Speaker 3: I'm going to, Oh yeah.
- 11:55Speaker 2: The McDouble was also a really good one because it's
- 11:58Speaker 2: Mac G's double quarterback offense.
- 12:01Speaker 3: I like McDouble.
- 12:02Speaker 4: McDouble. The Mac double. The Mac double.
- 12:06Speaker 2: David Dampiers, I guess you're on the Sean O'Connell show
- 12:08Speaker 2: edition with Deb is brought to you by Valley Plumbing, Heating, Cooling,
- 12:11Speaker 2: and Excavation, Culligan Water of Salt Lake City, and America
- 12:15Speaker 2: First Credit Union. So now you move into Big 12 play,
- 12:22Speaker 2: and you move into Big 12 play concurrent with your
- 12:25Speaker 2: first true road game, your first road game of the season.
- 12:27Speaker 2: I know it's great to have three in a row
- 12:29Speaker 2: kind of tune things up at Rice-Eckel Stadium, not like
- 12:32Speaker 2: you haven't played on the road before. Even the guys
- 12:35Speaker 2: that were backups last year played on the road. What
- 12:38Speaker 2: do you expect from the first road game of the
- 12:40Speaker 2: season at Iowa state?
- 12:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:44Speaker 5: I mean, definitely expected a good crowd. I think they
- 12:46Speaker 5: played Iowa pretty solid just coming off momentum. You know,
- 12:50Speaker 5: I think this game's matters to them as well. So,
- 12:54Speaker 5: and I mean, yeah, they're, they're a strong, tough team
- 12:57Speaker 5: and chances of rain coming out there, you.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Know, that game could go either way.
- 13:05Speaker 5: Just in the standpoint of, we don't know if it's
- 13:06Speaker 5: going to be sunny or, It's going to be truly raining.
- 13:09Speaker 5: We have no clue what the circumstances will be, but
- 13:13Speaker 5: we're prepared.
- 13:13Speaker 4: I think Sky was doing the right thing.
- 13:15Speaker 5: Week by week, we're throwing the ball wet and just
- 13:20Speaker 5: small stuff like that just to make sure we're dialed
- 13:22Speaker 5: in for any environment we go into.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Playing your prep ball in Arizona, you probably didn't have
- 13:28Speaker 2: a lot of super bad weather or rainy games in
- 13:32Speaker 2: high school. I don't know how many you played in college,
- 13:34Speaker 2: but Do you like a messy game, a muddy game,
- 13:37Speaker 2: a wet game? Like some football players enjoy that. Usually
- 13:42Speaker 2: it's guys who are slow because it's the best guys down, right,
- 13:47Speaker 2: and everything's straight line and it's harder to be twitchy
- 13:49Speaker 2: on a wet surface. So guys like me enjoy a
- 13:52Speaker 2: muddy game. Do you like that stuff?
- 13:55Speaker 4: You know, it's cool.
- 13:56Speaker 5: I mean, it's what I signed up for. I signed
- 13:58Speaker 5: up to play football in any environment. But, yeah, I
- 14:03Speaker 5: would say cool is the word. I wish I could
- 14:07Speaker 5: get the whole, like, I guess there's somewhat of like
- 14:10Speaker 5: you dial down on some things just because of, you know, again, speed,
- 14:14Speaker 5: the speed you're able to run at on that, on
- 14:17Speaker 5: the grass and stuff like that. But yeah, I'm definitely
- 14:20Speaker 5: an Arizona boy though. I'm all about the sun being out.
- 14:26Speaker 2: So Iowa state, like you said, they're, you know, they're
- 14:29Speaker 2: a solid team. They had a really close loss to Iowa.
- 14:32Speaker 2: It was a, Top 25, Big Ten team right now.
- 14:36Speaker 2: That's an in-state rivalry for them. That's obviously a game
- 14:38Speaker 2: that really matters, and those things are sometimes hard to
- 14:42Speaker 2: judge by. But what are you seeing from this defense
- 14:45Speaker 2: on film in terms of how quick they swarm to
- 14:48Speaker 2: the ball, maybe some exotic things, the pressure that they
- 14:52Speaker 2: usually bring? I know you're just starting this film study,
- 14:55Speaker 2: just getting this stuff rolling, but what are you seeing?
- 14:58Speaker 5: Yeah, honestly, just a little bit of everything, disguising things,
- 15:03Speaker 5: just i mean it's definitely different than i guess you
- 15:07Speaker 5: could say the old iowa state meta they used to
- 15:10Speaker 5: always run like there was a iowa state kind of
- 15:13Speaker 5: thing everyone knew they ran three safety things so just
- 15:16Speaker 5: kind of them starting their new defense in a way.
- 15:20Speaker 2: When i mean we're all getting used to it now
- 15:24Speaker 2: you you experienced it so i'm sure you're used to
- 15:26Speaker 2: it but like This is, for Iowa State, you got
- 15:30Speaker 2: a lot of new, a lot of new players, a
- 15:31Speaker 2: lot of new staff. And we have not been able
- 15:34Speaker 2: to put our finger on it with you, like, exactly why. But, like,
- 15:39Speaker 2: it seems like everything about you in year two at
- 15:41Speaker 2: the University of Utah is better, more comfortable, smoother, whatever. Like,
- 15:47Speaker 2: and I attribute it to people ask all the time,
- 15:51Speaker 2: what would I do? Why is it different this year?
- 15:54Speaker 2: And I'm like, well, I think part of it is
- 15:56Speaker 2: he's just more comfortable. I don't want to put words
- 15:58Speaker 2: in your mouth. I think part of it is he's
- 15:59Speaker 2: more comfortable. He's just used to the routine and things
- 16:02Speaker 2: like that. And I think also part of it is,
- 16:03Speaker 2: especially when we talk about what we saw later in
- 16:07Speaker 2: the season, I was like, now you're healthy.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Knock on wood.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:12Speaker 2: And I've answered those questions to people when we're just
- 16:16Speaker 2: casually having conversation.
- 16:19Speaker 3: If you can.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Describe for me the difference you feel just being in
- 16:24Speaker 2: a program for a second year, because there's a ton
- 16:26Speaker 2: of Cyclones that are great players, just like you were
- 16:29Speaker 2: a great player last year, but it is still their
- 16:31Speaker 2: first year. And maybe that full comfort of that full
- 16:34Speaker 2: integration hasn't happened yet.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:38Speaker 5: I'd say probably leadership is the biggest part of that.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Like coming into this program, I mean, we talk about
- 16:46Speaker 5: it like I'm not. set to be a leader just
- 16:48Speaker 5: because I play quarterback. Like, I still had to earn
- 16:51Speaker 5: that respect last year. And I wasn't a captain last year,
- 16:55Speaker 5: but just, again, I got to kind of see the
- 16:58Speaker 5: way people carried themselves as a U, Lander and Spencer, Jaron,
- 17:03Speaker 5: all those guys. So, yeah, that was big for me
- 17:06Speaker 5: to just kind of notice that, what leadership looks like
- 17:09Speaker 5: at the next level. And, yeah, I just feel like
- 17:12Speaker 5: I've kind of fully taken that this year where, like,
- 17:16Speaker 5: I could just tell the whole team Like I made
- 17:19Speaker 5: it important to me this offseason to make sure the
- 17:21Speaker 5: whole team kind of respects me as their leader and,
- 17:24Speaker 5: you know, someone they can trust when things are hard
- 17:26Speaker 5: or when things are going good.
- 17:27Speaker 4: You know, I'm always going to be the same individual.
- 17:29Speaker 5: So just that respect for my team that I was
- 17:32Speaker 5: able to gain this year, I think it just, again,
- 17:34Speaker 5: allows me to play confident in myself. Also, yeah, being
- 17:38Speaker 5: healthy is probably definitely the biggest one. Just I'm able
- 17:43Speaker 5: to do what I do out there. There's no second guessing.
- 17:47Speaker 5: What I can and cannot do.
- 17:49Speaker 3: All right. The respect thing.
- 17:54Speaker 2: We saw in pro football, I don't know if you
- 17:55Speaker 2: saw Kayla Williams getting carted off for a hamstring strain
- 17:58Speaker 2: and rolling around and screaming on the ground. I was
- 18:01Speaker 2: making fun of that. Everyone in the NFL is making
- 18:04Speaker 2: fun of that. It's easy to make fun of when
- 18:07Speaker 2: you're armchair quarterback, right? I feel a little more entitled
- 18:10Speaker 2: to make fun of people for not being tough because
- 18:12Speaker 2: I spent 12 years of my life getting beat up
- 18:14Speaker 2: for a living.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:16Speaker 2: That's neither here nor there. When it comes to football,
- 18:18Speaker 2: playing the quarterback position, right? How important is it for
- 18:22Speaker 2: you to, to be thought of as like tough, right?
- 18:27Speaker 2: If you're a linebacker, you gotta be tough. If you're
- 18:29Speaker 2: a fullback, you gotta be tough. If you're an offensive lineman,
- 18:31Speaker 2: you better be tough quarterbacks. You want to be known
- 18:34Speaker 2: as tough, but being skillful and a good decision maker
- 18:38Speaker 2: and having a great.
- 18:38Speaker 3: Arm are all much more important for you personally.
- 18:42Speaker 2: How much do you want toughness to be part of
- 18:43Speaker 2: your reputation as a QB?
- 18:46Speaker 3: A lot.
- 18:49Speaker 4: Yeah, you should just know.
- 18:50Speaker 5: I want people to be able to tell whoever they're
- 18:53Speaker 5: talking to, yeah, my quarterback's going to do whatever it takes.
- 18:58Speaker 5: Simple as that. You never know if he's hurt for real.
- 19:00Speaker 5: You never know if he's having a bad day for real.
- 19:03Speaker 5: He's always that guy. That's kind of the mentality I
- 19:06Speaker 5: always wanted as being the QB.
- 19:08Speaker 4: I think it matters.
- 19:09Speaker 3: I think it matters a lot, too. I think we learned.
- 19:12Speaker 2: We didn't know until after the season was over, but
- 19:14Speaker 2: I think we learned that about you last year, that
- 19:16Speaker 2: he's going to show up, he's not going to complain,
- 19:17Speaker 2: there's not going to be any excuses, because you hit
- 19:20Speaker 2: a lot of bumps, bruises, injuries, right? You never said
- 19:24Speaker 2: a word about any of it, never complained about any
- 19:26Speaker 2: of it. And there's a way you could even do
- 19:28Speaker 2: that with your body language, right? Where, like, you make
- 19:30Speaker 2: it obvious that you're hurting when you get up after
- 19:32Speaker 2: being hit or something.
- 19:34Speaker 3: You never really played up that sort of thing. And so...
- 19:37Speaker 3: I appreciate that about you.
- 19:39Speaker 2: I also, when I see it from someone at the
- 19:40Speaker 2: very highest level, who's a Heisman Trophy winner in college
- 19:43Speaker 2: and a first-round draft pick and all these things, I'm like,
- 19:46Speaker 2: I wonder how that affects his teammates and his locker room.
- 19:50Speaker 2: We know that fans in a city like Chicago are
- 19:52Speaker 2: going to hate on you for it if you don't
- 19:54Speaker 2: redeem yourself with great play. But when you see it
- 19:57Speaker 2: at the very highest level, it's like, doesn't that matter
- 19:59Speaker 2: also to someone like that? Don't you want people to
- 20:02Speaker 2: know that you're not only great and skilled, but you're tough?
- 20:06Speaker 3: Like, football matters. Toughness matters in football.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:10Speaker 5: No, I, I strive on toughness. That's part of the
- 20:13Speaker 5: reason why I'm here at Utah. Like that's just, that's,
- 20:15Speaker 5: that's our culture. That's what we preach. Hopefully he was
- 20:19Speaker 5: that hurt where.
- 20:20Speaker 4: He really felt like he, that it needed to be
- 20:24Speaker 4: what it was, the situation.
- 20:25Speaker 3: I guess.
- 20:26Speaker 4: But yeah, I don't know.
- 20:29Speaker 3: I'm not worried about our guy.
- 20:30Speaker 2: I'm not worried about Devin Depp here being, being turned
- 20:32Speaker 2: into a meme like we saw on Twitter with the
- 20:35Speaker 2: cart and the tears and the thumbs up and all
- 20:38Speaker 2: that stuff. back to more important things back to big
- 20:41Speaker 2: 12 play. There's, you know, some of the results I
- 20:45Speaker 2: won't say have been surprising, but as we've looked around
- 20:48Speaker 2: the conference, it's like, okay, Houston and Texas tech played
- 20:51Speaker 2: a great game last Friday. Both teams looked awesome. Texas
- 20:56Speaker 2: tech ended up winning that game. BYU looked really good. Again,
- 20:59Speaker 2: you guys looked really good. Again, Kansas state looks awesome.
- 21:03Speaker 2: West Virginia, all of a sudden belongs in the conversation.
- 21:07Speaker 2: I don't know how much you've been able to watch
- 21:08Speaker 2: of the rest of the conference. You had a day game,
- 21:10Speaker 2: so maybe cause some night action and things like that.
- 21:13Speaker 2: But it seems like, uh, the race is shaping up
- 21:18Speaker 2: at least a little bit and maybe there's some surprises
- 21:20Speaker 2: in there.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:23Speaker 5: I think we're getting like, I honestly think our conference
- 21:25Speaker 5: is getting pretty better. Like we're starting to, we're starting
- 21:29Speaker 5: to average out and, you know, hopefully all of us
- 21:33Speaker 5: are able to show that like, going into these weeks
- 21:37Speaker 5: where we are playing each other and stuff like that,
- 21:39Speaker 5: people are playing at a high level just because, like,
- 21:43Speaker 5: even at the top 25, I think there's, like.
- 21:44Speaker 4: 10 SEC in there. There's, like, eight Big 12, four ACC,
- 21:50Speaker 4: and then, like, four of us or something like that.
- 21:54Speaker 4: I forgot what it was, but I just think, like,
- 21:58Speaker 4: we're showing that it should be a little bit more
- 22:00Speaker 4: leveled out where maybe you take two of those SEC
- 22:03Speaker 4: teams out and maybe one of those Big 10s and
- 22:06Speaker 4: You know, you start putting a couple of Big 12s
- 22:08Speaker 4: in there just because I think, honestly, our conference is
- 22:12Speaker 4: playing at a high level.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Three teams, three Big 12 teams in the top 15
- 22:17Speaker 2: right now, BYU, Texas Tech, and Utah. Houston is in
- 22:21Speaker 2: the top 25 at 25. West Virginia, Oklahoma State, they're
- 22:27Speaker 2: in that also getting votes category. Arizona's, some people cast
- 22:31Speaker 2: a vote for Arizona, but they're a little bit further back.
- 22:34Speaker 2: So I think the conference is getting... A decent amount
- 22:37Speaker 2: of respect. I just think that everyone then gives even
- 22:41Speaker 2: more to the SEC and the Big Ten, which is annoying,
- 22:44Speaker 2: but it's something you're just going to have to deal with.
- 22:46Speaker 4: Yeah, something we're going to have to deal with for
- 22:48Speaker 4: a while, sadly.
- 22:49Speaker 2: So, day game, what was the rest of the day
- 22:52Speaker 2: like for you on Saturday? Obviously celebrating a big win,
- 22:55Speaker 2: you ice.
- 22:57Speaker 3: It up, or did you get to go hang out
- 22:59Speaker 3: with the family? What did you do with the rest
- 23:00Speaker 3: of your day?
- 23:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I always get dinner with my family after games.
- 23:05Speaker 4: This is something.
- 23:07Speaker 5: I don't know why, but I, I love the, the
- 23:10Speaker 5: environment of just being with my family, going to get dinner, um,
- 23:14Speaker 5: and sit down. So we went to Capitol grill last
- 23:16Speaker 5: week and, um, yeah, it was great. Just good vibes.
- 23:21Speaker 4: And then went home.
- 23:21Speaker 5: We actually got to watch the, it was Ole Miss,
- 23:25Speaker 5: Ole Miss and LSU that night.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 23:27Speaker 5: We got to watch that game, which was, that was fun,
- 23:30Speaker 5: entertaining for me to be a fan with my family,
- 23:33Speaker 5: like be able to watch games together.
- 23:35Speaker 4: But, uh, Yeah, just tell me the vibes after the game.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Last thing before we let you go, the schedule on
- 23:42Speaker 2: the road, like each head coach has their own routines, right?
- 23:46Speaker 2: And Morgan Scali strikes me as a guy who's going
- 23:49Speaker 2: to keep things more the same than try to change things.
- 23:51Speaker 2: But do you know yet what the routine for the
- 23:54Speaker 2: road game is going to look like? I imagine it
- 23:56Speaker 2: was probably similar to what you guys did in the bowl.
- 23:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess it would be similar to even what
- 24:02Speaker 4: we've been doing here.
- 24:04Speaker 5: We'll probably– leave earlier just so what our day normally
- 24:09Speaker 5: starts like on friday feels the same as what it
- 24:11Speaker 5: starts like when we're out there to give that same
- 24:14Speaker 5: vibe of what time we eat dinner um what time
- 24:19Speaker 5: rather we watch a movie or not rather we um
- 24:22Speaker 5: just chill and hang out as a team he probably
- 24:25Speaker 5: keep that all the same just so you know we
- 24:27Speaker 5: feel good about going into the game feel.
- 24:29Speaker 3: Normal For my sake, I hope there's rain. For Devin
- 24:33Speaker 3: Dampier's sake, I hope it's.
- 24:34Speaker 4: A nice dry game.
- 24:37Speaker 2: In Iowa when they take on the Iowa State Cyclones
- 24:41Speaker 2: at Jack Trice Stadium. That'll be a 1.30 Mountain Time kickoff.
- 24:44Speaker 2: The game is on Fox and QB1 Devin Dampier. We
- 24:48Speaker 2: wish you luck. Stay healthy. Thanks again for giving us
- 24:50Speaker 2: some time. Maybe a little stuffy. Feel better.
- 24:53Speaker 3: We hope for that also.
- 24:54Speaker 4: Good thing it's early in the week. It should be
- 24:57Speaker 4: gone by weekend.
- 24:58Speaker 3: We're recording this early in the week, so you should
- 25:00Speaker 3: be all right. Just a little vitamin C. Thanks for
- 25:02Speaker 3: being here, Dev. Thank you. That's Dishing with Dev and
- 25:06Speaker 3: Dan Pierre.
