- 0:04If you have a copy of God's Word in your hands, please meet me in
- 0:07the Gospel of Mark in chapter 8. Brother, thank you for your
- 0:16precious prayer. Forgive me if I pray once again.
- 0:21I think I have permission. Jesus said my house shall be
- 0:25called the House of prayer. Mark chapter 8 We'll read these
- 0:29verses and then we will pray and invoke the name of the Lord and
- 0:32ask for His help because we need the Holy Spirit of God.
- 0:36In Mark 81 we read in those days when again a great crowd had
- 0:40gathered and they had nothing to eat.
- 0:43He called his disciples to him and said to them, I have
- 0:47compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three
- 0:51days and have nothing to eat. And if I send them away hungry,
- 0:55to their homes, they will faint on the way.
- 0:58And some of them have come from far away.
- 1:01And his disciples answered him, How can one feed these people
- 1:05with bread here in this desolate place?
- 1:08And he asked them, how many loaves do you have?
- 1:11They said seven. And he directed the crowd to sit
- 1:14down on the ground, And he took the seven loaves, and having
- 1:18given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to
- 1:22set before. The people and they set them
- 1:25before the crowd, and they had a few small fish.
- 1:29And having been having blessed them, he said that these also
- 1:32should be set before them. And they ate and were satisfied.
- 1:36And they took up the broken pieces, left over 7 baskets
- 1:41full, and there were about 4000 people and he sent them away.
- 1:48Lord, this is your word. We believe with every fiber of
- 1:53our being that your word has power.
- 1:56But, Lord, we also know that you promised the Holy Spirit the
- 2:01gift of God. Yes, to indwell us, yes to seal
- 2:05us, but Lord, to empower us to be witnesses, to give us the
- 2:10Spirit of wisdom and revelation, to understand these things and
- 2:13to declare them with boldness and courage.
- 2:16And we pray that in this moment as we are exposed to the voice
- 2:20of God. That we would experience the
- 2:22presence of God and that Lord, the end result of this message
- 2:27would indeed be a simple yet glorious thing.
- 2:30That you would draw us closer to you in an intimate way.
- 2:34What is the point, O God, if we just hear platitudes?
- 2:38What is the point, O God, if we just learn information?
- 2:41But our hearts do not come alive?
- 2:44And so, Lord, we call upon your name in this service, and we ask
- 2:48that you would be merciful to us.
- 2:50And that our eyes would be open, that you would perform a miracle
- 2:53for the soul, and that we would be able to behold the absolute
- 2:57beauty and the infinite glory of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 3:00Bring us there, oh God. No charisma, no personality, no
- 3:05craft of a message can do that work.
- 3:08Only the Holy Spirit. And we ask that he would be ever
- 3:11present, Please, oh God, to be in our midst.
- 3:14In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
- 3:17Another miracle. Of bread and fish, yes.
- 3:22And there are some skeptics, some liberal scholars, who would
- 3:27say that this is the same event that you and I studied not too
- 3:30long ago when Jesus fed 5000, not including women and
- 3:35children. And there are others who would
- 3:39rightly acknowledge no, this is a different occurrence, and that
- 3:42is accurate. It is a different occurrence.
- 3:44And though you and I might confess that.
- 3:48We might not know with confidence the purpose of it,
- 3:51especially because it's so similar to the former, but the
- 3:55very fact that this account is tucked in our Bibles should give
- 4:01us enough encouragement to take the time to investigate it with
- 4:05great attention, despite the resemblance.
- 4:10What you and I have here is an invitation from God to consider
- 4:14his. Mind and his heart.
- 4:17And I think what you and I need to do in coming to this text in
- 4:22order to draw as much SAP from it as possible is to compare it
- 4:27with what we studied a few weeks ago.
- 4:29And so as you have your hand there in mark chapter 8, as I'm
- 4:33speaking, you can go to mark Chapter 6 and place your finger
- 4:37there at verse 34, because we are going to go back and forth
- 4:41in order to look at key distinctions between what seems
- 4:45to be so similar. But containing enough contrast
- 4:49for us to see, oh, there is truths for conviction, there are
- 4:54truths for comfort here in this very account.
- 4:57Can I pause here and give you a word of counsel whenever you
- 5:02come to your Bibles? And I pray that you read your
- 5:04Bibles as you read through the systematically from cover to
- 5:08cover, you will indeed come into contact with what seems to be
- 5:12repeating text. You may see something that
- 5:16mirrors, something that you had just read, or something that was
- 5:19in another neighborhood in the word of God.
- 5:21When you come to that point, please resist the temptation to
- 5:26glare over it. Do not bypass it.
- 5:30Do not dismiss it. Recognize that God has put it in
- 5:34there for a reason. And instead of just skimming
- 5:38over those verses just so you can soothe your conscience, say
- 5:41I didn't skip over this part of the Bible.
- 5:43Pause. Pull out the text that you know
- 5:48resembles it, and read it carefully and comparatively and
- 5:55as you do that. You will see things begin to
- 5:58surface and you will begin to see joy filled, life changing,
- 6:04truths that will bless you. And I pray that as you see that
- 6:10discipline being exercised with this very chapter right here,
- 6:13you'd be inspired. That again, whenever you come to
- 6:16a text that seems to be common or familiar or repetitive, it is
- 6:20actually an invitation from God for greater revelation.
- 6:24And so we come. Here and there are four main
- 6:27points that I want to make in light of this text in comparison
- 6:29to the other. And the first thing that I want
- 6:31to bring to your attention is #1.
- 6:34The one who made the predicament known.
- 6:38The one who made the predicament known.
- 6:41In those days when again a crowd had gathered and they had
- 6:45nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him and said to
- 6:49them. Now go to Mark chapter 6 and
- 6:52verse 35 and you'll see at the feeding, the introduction to the
- 6:56feeding of the 5000 something different and Mark 635 you'll
- 7:00see. And when it grew late, his
- 7:02disciples came to him and said. This is a desolate place and the
- 7:09hour is now late. Send them away to go into the
- 7:12surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves
- 7:16something to eat. It's quite clear, isn't it?
- 7:20When you come to the 4000, you see that it is Jesus who
- 7:24introduces to the disciples A dilemma.
- 7:27When you think back at the 5000, it was the disciples who
- 7:31approached Jesus and made their problem known.
- 7:36And when you. See that you realize that it's
- 7:38it's not uncommon for people, including the disciples, to make
- 7:42their needs known to Christ. What is uncommon though is for
- 7:46Jesus to bring up an issue to his followers.
- 7:51He went to the 12 and he said I have compassion on the crowd
- 7:55because they've been here for a few days and.
- 7:57If they head back, they might faint on the way.
- 8:02Why is that difference important?
- 8:04What do we learn from these things?
- 8:05What do we see with these two references?
- 8:08Well, mark Chapter 6 through the illustration of the disciples
- 8:11coming to Jesus. You and I were encouraged to
- 8:13bring our needs to Jesus. Bring your needs to Jesus.
- 8:20Bring what you've observed to be a problem, and come to the one
- 8:25who can solve it. But when you come to the feeding
- 8:28of the 4000, what you are prepared to know?
- 8:32Is be ready for Jesus to come and test you.
- 8:38The 5000 Come to Jesus with your need.
- 8:42The 4000 believe that Jesus will come to you with a test.
- 8:48Was there a test included in the 5000?
- 8:50Yes, but the emphasis of Jesus testing the faith of his own is
- 8:54in this chapter and this is what we have to understand.
- 8:59Christ is not seeking the advice or or the counsel of His
- 9:02students by approaching them in this way.
- 9:05His goal was to measure the growth, the growth and the
- 9:08strength of their faith. You know when.
- 9:11Jesus gives his test. It's not like how teachers
- 9:13commonly give their exams to their students.
- 9:16The Lord is in need of no evaluation to discover where
- 9:20you're at. So why does he give his test
- 9:23then? Why does the all knowing one
- 9:25bring us through trials? In order to examine our faith.
- 9:29Well, it's just for that. It is for you.
- 9:32Listen carefully. It is for you to discover the
- 9:35quality of your faith. It's for you to see it.
- 9:39It's for you to recognize it. It's for you to be able to
- 9:42observe it and to be able to say honestly where where is my
- 9:45faith? And nothing proves the
- 9:48sincerity. Nothing proves the strength of
- 9:51one's faith more than trials. You can sing beautifully, you
- 9:56can preach powerfully, but when a trial comes, your faith will
- 10:01speak the loudest and they will come and when they do come.
- 10:09It is then that you will know the true condition of your
- 10:12convictions. And oh, when it shines through,
- 10:16I pray that your faith does shine through.
- 10:18There are manifold blessings as a result of it.
- 10:21What are those manifold blessings?
- 10:23Well, #1. When your faith stands, when it
- 10:26is not moved, when it is only strengthened, as it goes through
- 10:31that fire, you're strengthened. You personally will know a
- 10:37greater peace. You personally will know a
- 10:40greater assurance. You know a wise pastor.
- 10:43Made a very brilliant observation when it comes to
- 10:46believers who struggle with the assurance of their of their
- 10:48salvation. And he had said this.
- 10:50That it is. Usually younger people who
- 10:53struggle with where they're at in their stance before a
- 10:56righteous God. And when I heard that, I thought
- 10:59to myself that's actually true when when I've encountered
- 11:02people have said, how do I know I'm saved, it's usually those
- 11:04who are fresh in the faith or those who haven't had much life
- 11:08experience. What do you mean by that?
- 11:10Because when you go through life.
- 11:13Following Jesus, you will encounter various trials.
- 11:16And when you go through those various trials and your faith
- 11:19still stands, your assurance grows.
- 11:22It grows. This is real.
- 11:25This is in me. This is true.
- 11:29This is not fake. This is not shallow soil here.
- 11:32Oh no, this is the real deal. I still love him, though I
- 11:36cannot see him. I still hoping him, though he
- 11:38slays. Me.
- 11:41You're strengthened. What about the other believers
- 11:44who are watching you in your trial and your test?
- 11:46They're encouraged. Look at brother so and so.
- 11:51Still loving the Lord. Still serving the Lord though
- 11:54there's so much trouble in his marriage, though there's so much
- 11:57trouble with their children there.
- 11:59They are still giving everything they have to Christ.
- 12:02Oh, surely if it's possible in them, it's possible in me.
- 12:07What about a watching, unbelieving, skeptical blasphemy
- 12:11world? When they see your faith shine
- 12:15as a result of that fire and draw, and we see their draws
- 12:19being removed by the the surgeon's hand, are they not
- 12:24challenged? Do they not at least question
- 12:29and examine themselves to some degree while they see your hope
- 12:32and the invisible but living God?
- 12:36That's what Peter talks about on First Peter 17 when he says that
- 12:39there is the tested genuineness of your faith.
- 12:43And he said right before that that there are various trials,
- 12:47don't be grieved by them because those trials are means to reveal
- 12:52are you genuine and you see that, The believers see that and
- 12:56the world sees that. And ultimately, at the end of
- 12:59the day, Christ will praise it and commend it as your faith
- 13:03endures until the end. But let's slow down with the
- 13:05verses that we just read. Did you notice how the Lord in
- 13:08verse two of chapter 8 expresses his compassion?
- 13:13Verse two, I have compassion on the crowd.
- 13:18Mark in six with the 5000 mentions Jesus compassion as
- 13:23well, but not directly from the mouth of Jesus.
- 13:27When compassion is mentioned in Mark chapter 6, it is narrated
- 13:30by Mark. When we come here to Jesus with
- 13:34the 4000, he himself says it. I have compassion on the crowd.
- 13:41And when you compare again these two references, you realize the
- 13:44absolute beauty of the nature and the character of God, namely
- 13:48in his compassion. What was the object of Jesus's
- 13:52compassion? With the feeding of the 5000,
- 13:55we'll go back to Mark 6 and look at verse 34, Mark 634.
- 14:01When he went ashore he saw a great crowd and he had
- 14:07compassion on them because this is the reason why he had
- 14:10compassion, because they were like sheep without a shepherd.
- 14:15And he began to teach them many things.
- 14:20The trigger for the deep seated feelings of care and concern for
- 14:25the people in March chapter six with the 5000 was spiritual.
- 14:30The spiritual need of the people with a heavy heart.
- 14:32The Lord perceived the masses, and he was able to discern that
- 14:36this people, like sheep without a shepherd, are lost.
- 14:39They're lost, they're vulnerable, they're exposed to
- 14:43danger, they are malnourished, and they're in.
- 14:48Trouble. And that's what moved him.
- 14:52And when it moved him, he provided for them by teaching
- 14:56them, he taught them. But when you come to Mark,
- 15:00chapter 8, when Jesus says himself I have compassion, you
- 15:04see that the object of his compassion is a little
- 15:06different. Verse two of Mark eight, I have
- 15:08compassion on the crowd because, well, what is it, Lord?
- 15:11Because they have been with me now three days and have nothing
- 15:15to eat. In the former account, Jesus
- 15:20compassion was for the spiritual need.
- 15:22In the second account, Jesus compassion is for the physical
- 15:25well-being of the people. Why?
- 15:30Because Christ is not merely the shepherd of your soul, He's a
- 15:33provider for your body as well. We must not think for a moment
- 15:38that because we are spiritual people who worship in spirit to
- 15:42our God, who is spirit, that he overlooks the material
- 15:44necessities of your existence. He's keenly aware of all our
- 15:48needs because he is the master of the whole man of all that you
- 15:52are spirit, soul and body. He is Lord.
- 15:55And if anything coming to this passage.
- 15:57We have the right to contemplate on His compassion as you and I
- 16:02manage and engage our day-to-day affairs.
- 16:05You're eating. Your clothing, you're living,
- 16:09you're traveling are not outside of His tender care.
- 16:14We tend to think Jesus is compassionate and sympathetic
- 16:18for my eternity. Not just your eternity, your
- 16:20daily activity. That is the extension of His
- 16:24love. That is the breadth of his care,
- 16:29that he actually can look not just at your empty soul, but he
- 16:33can look at your grumbling stomach and still be moved.
- 16:35In the same way it's hard for you to believe.
- 16:39Well, welcome to the realm of faith.
- 16:41What a glorious thing about the mindfulness of Jesus.
- 16:45And what's so glorious here is that it's not just for the
- 16:47immediate, it was for the future.
- 16:50Notice that Jesus said they've been with me now three days.
- 16:53And if I send them away, hungry to their homes, they will faint
- 16:56on the way. On the way they will faint.
- 17:00I'm. I'm thinking about their
- 17:02tomorrow, Not just their today, their tomorrow.
- 17:08And we need to believe that that he's the shepherd that, yes,
- 17:12walks by our side, but he's omnipresent.
- 17:15He's ahead of us as well. And if you do not believe that,
- 17:19then you're in trouble. Just like the Israelites were in
- 17:22trouble when they didn't believe that as they were being led into
- 17:24the Promised Land. Speaking about that, can I show
- 17:26you something quite amazing about God's leading in the
- 17:28Promised Land? It's not an Exodus.
- 17:30It's not in numbers. It's an Ezekiel.
- 17:32Do you know where that is in your Bible, Ezekiel.
- 17:35We'll go there. Don't be ashamed to go to the
- 17:38index if you need to. Ezekiel.
- 17:40Chapter 20. I remember when I was first
- 17:42walking with the Lord, I heard a preacher and he said turn to the
- 17:44book of Hebrews. And I thought Hebrews Jews.
- 17:46So I went to the Old Testament. The person next to me said no,
- 17:49no, no. A New Testament right side of
- 17:50the Bible. Ezekiel chapter 20, verse six.
- 17:57Look at this wonderful commentary.
- 17:59That's why you got to read the whole Bible, man.
- 18:01You got to see it all. Are you going to miss something?
- 18:04Ezekiel 20, verse six, on that day.
- 18:07This is the Lord speaking on that day.
- 18:09I swore to them. That I would bring them out of
- 18:12the land of Egypt into a land. Now look at this into a land
- 18:16that I searched out for them. A land flowing with milk and
- 18:21honey, the most glorious of all lands.
- 18:23You know what that word searched is in the original and its
- 18:26description is in its definition is to spy out the same word that
- 18:33is used in Numbers 13 when. 12 spies, 1 chief from every tribe
- 18:38were raised up to go into the land of Canaan to spy it out
- 18:43long before those guys went in there.
- 18:46The Lord spied it out himself. He already investigated it.
- 18:51He already determined it. He already prepared it.
- 18:58They were just going to discover it for themselves.
- 19:01And you think about your life. And that car that you prayed
- 19:05about and that house that you finally were able to get in this
- 19:08crazy market and that opportunity, that job that seems
- 19:13to have just fallen, fallen into your lap and you burst out in
- 19:17praise in Thanksgiving. Can I tell you something?
- 19:19God got searched it out for you a long time ago.
- 19:24He's not surprised with you. He's not catching up with your
- 19:28life. He's not overwhelmed with all
- 19:31his children, and he's trying to manage it all.
- 19:33Breaking a sweat while he sits on the throne, He searched it
- 19:38out and all you get to do is you walk through these pads in this
- 19:43life as a Pilgrim is figure it out yourself.
- 19:47Something that he's already established long ago.
- 19:49What a way to live. What a way to live.
- 19:52Not just comfort for the unknown, but when I come to
- 19:55something. That seems to have surprised and
- 19:57shocked my plans, maybe even my prayers.
- 19:59I can be absolutely at rest knowing he searched it out.
- 20:04He knows why this is happening. He already spied it out for me.
- 20:07He's. Ahead of me.
- 20:10So here's the Lord saying, I'm concerned about what's going to
- 20:13happen to them if they faint on the way.
- 20:15So here's the mindfulness of the shepherd.
- 20:18Ahead of your steps, ahead of your plans, ahead of your
- 20:21thoughts, ahead of your worries. He's already there.
- 20:25But did you notice something else in that same sentence where
- 20:28Jesus says I have compassion on the crowd?
- 20:30Go back to it, verse two. I have compassion on the crowd
- 20:36because this moved me tremendously because they have
- 20:41been with me now three days. The compassion of God, the care
- 20:49of God, the mercy of God is for all.
- 20:53It does dispense with common grace to the just and the
- 20:57wicked, but at the same time do you realize that the Lord takes
- 21:03into account those who sacrifice for him?
- 21:10This blessed me, because it shows that Christ sees what you
- 21:13do for him, and it moves him. These people were in attendance
- 21:20for three days in a row. Not 30 minutes beyond the
- 21:25service time, three days in a row.
- 21:30And when you come to crowds in the gospels, they're not really
- 21:33seen in a in a great light usually.
- 21:36But I argue that this is a different case here, this people
- 21:39come with unbroken presence of mind, presence of body, sleeping
- 21:47overnight, exposed to the elements out in the open.
- 21:51Seeing their resources evaporate hour by hour, and yet what is
- 21:56keeping them in place is this deep interest in Christ.
- 22:00And so deep was that interest that it swallowed up their
- 22:03concern for physical bread. This is not the people
- 22:08protesting to Jesus. We've been here 3 days.
- 22:10Do you have something in your lunch box?
- 22:14This is Jesus looking at the crowd and recognizing at what
- 22:17length they were willing to go to be there under his ministry,
- 22:20and then caring for them accordingly.
- 22:25Do you believe that, Jesus? Christ regards what you do for
- 22:32Him good because you should. Because you should.
- 22:39He actually considers how early you came.
- 22:43He actually takes into account how late you stay.
- 22:48Oh, believe that he knows the distance you drove here and the
- 22:51gas that you have to put in your car to get here.
- 22:54He knows when you're doing this out of a pure heart, not under
- 22:58compulsion, but out of genuine desire, not out of convenience,
- 23:03but out of genuine desire to serve him.
- 23:05He sees it. He sees it all.
- 23:08And not only does he see it. He has special feelings in his
- 23:13heart for you. They have been with me here now
- 23:18for three days, But praise God, he knows he doesn't miss it.
- 23:26Others might. He's aware of it.
- 23:30How far, How long, how much? And it moves his heart.
- 23:37Do you want to move his heart? And just love him and put him
- 23:43above everything, even your food, and see the special
- 23:47attention that he will give you. I know that.
- 23:48That that's not. We don't like that stuff, right?
- 23:51No, no, no, no. Don't tell me that.
- 23:52Grace. Grace.
- 23:53Grace. Grace.
- 23:55Yeah. Grace.
- 23:55Good. You can be saved by His grace,
- 23:58but how you know him is not necessarily by grace.
- 24:04You walk with him. You choose to live for him.
- 24:07You make the sacrifices for him. And he considers every single
- 24:11one. So we look first here at the one
- 24:15who made the predicament known. We come down to the second
- 24:20point. The second difference is between
- 24:22the 5000 and the 4000, and it is this the number of resources at
- 24:25hand. Verse four.
- 24:28And his disciples answered him, How can one feed these people
- 24:30with bread here in this desolate place?
- 24:32And he asked them, how many loaves do you have?
- 24:34They said seven. They said 7.
- 24:37When it came to the 5000 and the same question was asked, it was
- 24:40a different response. We have 5 loaves and how many?
- 24:43Fish 2 fish. Fish are included in this, but
- 24:47you come down to verse 7 and it is a number not known to us.
- 24:50And they had a few small fish, so they had fish and bread, The
- 24:54same ingredients, different numbers, though not much of a
- 24:57difference. And so people like to play
- 25:00around with the numbers and try to get some deep mystical
- 25:02meaning and you don't have to go there.
- 25:04It's very simple. The assets are different, but
- 25:08the encouragement you and I can draw is simply this.
- 25:10Whether you have less or more today than you did yesterday,
- 25:14what ultimately makes a difference in your life is not
- 25:16what you have, but whose hand holds it.
- 25:21That's the difference if these resources.
- 25:24Remain in the hands of the disciples, no impact would be
- 25:26made, but the moment that they consecrated what they had to the
- 25:31Christ, anything is possible. Anything is possible, and there
- 25:37should be no doubt that if Christ wanted to, that he could
- 25:41have made bread and fish appear out of nothing.
- 25:43He made this world out of nothing.
- 25:46He spoke this universe into existence, and so why did he do
- 25:50it with bread and fish? Because he wants to teach his
- 25:53disciples then and his disciples now.
- 25:55This valuable lesson Give it all to me and don't rely on your
- 26:01resources. Rely on my creative,
- 26:05compassionate power if you're going to make an impact for
- 26:07anything. These people weren't going to be
- 26:10touched if they trusted in their own wisdom.
- 26:13Even back there with the feeding of the 5000, if they went to the
- 26:15grocery store to try to buy all that they could for these
- 26:19people, it wouldn't be enough. And that's the point.
- 26:24Here are these people who have a need, and here are these
- 26:26disciples who are agents of God's message and heart.
- 26:29How are they going to make an impact?
- 26:31Not in your own strength. Not in your own ideas, Not by
- 26:34bar barring marketing schemes from the bestselling Christian
- 26:37book. No, from looking at him, keeping
- 26:41your eyes on him, believing him, putting it all at his hand, and
- 26:47trusting that he could do miracles with it.
- 26:49Where? Where was the focus of the
- 26:51disciples? Look back at verse four.
- 26:53And his disciples answered him. How can one feed these people
- 26:55with bread here, in this desolate place?
- 26:59That's where their focus was. This is a wilderness.
- 27:03There's no jewel anywhere near here.
- 27:06There's nothing that we can do to make this happen.
- 27:10And that's the point, Disciples. You're looking at the wrong
- 27:12thing. Look at the one who's done it
- 27:16before and keep your eyes there. Keep your eyes there.
- 27:22The one who calls into existence of things that do not exist
- 27:25according to Romans 4. The one who actually can make it
- 27:28all happen in a moment. This is a desolate place.
- 27:32I thought about, you know, they believe that about the region
- 27:35that they were in. And we can say the same perhaps
- 27:36of the city of Chicago. This is a desolate place.
- 27:42We're so grateful for this church opening the doors to us
- 27:44to be able to meet here regularly.
- 27:45But we have plans, God willing to have our own place.
- 27:47How are we going to do that with this kind of a market?
- 27:49How are we going to do that with a government that doesn't give
- 27:53property so easily, especially if it's tax free, tax exempt in
- 27:56some way. This is a desolate place.
- 28:01With all the craziness and inflation, even if that time
- 28:03comes, how will we pull out the resources to ensure a purchase
- 28:08or a plan that will keep us out of trouble in the future?
- 28:12Well, don't look at the desolate place.
- 28:15Don't look at the lack of resources.
- 28:16Don't look at the opposition. Look to him and keep your eyes
- 28:20there. These disciples didn't for some
- 28:23reason, and some people have so much trouble believing that the
- 28:25disciples doubted at this time. That they reinterpret this whole
- 28:30story because they think to themselves how you saw the same
- 28:34this like the mirroring scenario, right?
- 28:36It's Part 2. This is, this is copy paste.
- 28:40There is no way that the disciples were doubting Jesus
- 28:43here to the point where they reinterpret verse 4 to mean that
- 28:47they were kind of sarcastically nudging to Christ.
- 28:49How are we going to feed these people unless somebody does it?
- 28:53That's how they interpret this verse.
- 28:54How do you read that? Is it so hard to imagine that
- 28:58the disciples lost sight of the faithfulness of Christ so
- 29:00quickly? Answer No, it's not.
- 29:04It's not difficult because you and I know very well, if we're
- 29:08honest with ourselves, that we don't learn things the first
- 29:10time around. I've seen it.
- 29:14You. Can preach a message on
- 29:16forgiveness and it takes 10 more of them before it says oh OK
- 29:19yeah, forgiveness. Seen it for myself, reading the
- 29:22scripture, dealing with situations.
- 29:25It doesn't always happen the first time around.
- 29:28Let me see here that these disciples, believe it or not,
- 29:32didn't get it. Spiritual amnesia is not
- 29:35uncommon among the Saints. You know, Jesus says something.
- 29:41So convicting to one of his disciples, I want to show it to
- 29:43you. It's in a different gospel.
- 29:44And John chapter 14, the disciple Philip asked Jesus a
- 29:50question and Jesus answers something that.
- 29:56Should move us in, John 14-8, Phillip said to him, Lord, show
- 30:02us the Father, and it is enough for us.
- 30:07Jesus said to him, Have I been with you so long and you still
- 30:11do not know me? Phillip, whoever has seen me has
- 30:17seen the Father. How can you say, show us the
- 30:19Father? What a question.
- 30:23Have I been with you so long? And you still don't get it,
- 30:27Philip, after all the miracles, after all the teachings, after
- 30:31all my sayings, after all the parables, and it still hasn't
- 30:35registered yet. If you've seen me, you've seen
- 30:38him. Lord, spare me.
- 30:47I don't want the Lord to have to say that about me.
- 30:49Daniel, have I been with you so long?
- 30:53That you still don't understand who I am.
- 30:57It's been 10 years, son. It's been 10 years.
- 31:02And yet you can hear this and it can convict you.
- 31:06And if you're not careful, that conviction can translate to
- 31:09condemnation and your hope is slaughtered.
- 31:12Don't go there. Because even in this you and I
- 31:15are encouraged. You're saying, how can you
- 31:17encourage not to be lighthearted about your stagnation, not to be
- 31:21lighthearted about? Your unwillingness to move with
- 31:26urgency and growth and grace and the knowledge of the Lord Jesus
- 31:28Christ to be encouraged in this, that even when the disciples
- 31:32should have responded so much differently, right, if they
- 31:36really did believe Jesus. I mean, this is what I would
- 31:41expect. How can these people be fed,
- 31:43right? How can these people go home
- 31:45hungry? Lord, Lord, we've seen you do
- 31:47this. We seemed just give us the word.
- 31:49Do you want to know what's in our pockets?
- 31:50You want to know what's in our bags?
- 31:51You want us to go look around and see how many bread and fish
- 31:53are here? You say the word.
- 31:55We trust you, Lord. That didn't come out of their
- 31:57mouths. Doubt.
- 32:01Unbelief. And what does Jesus do?
- 32:06Does he scold them? Does he sigh and put him aside?
- 32:10Says, you know what? I can't trust you guys.
- 32:12I'm going to deal with this myself.
- 32:13You clearly didn't get the lesson.
- 32:15No. Look here.
- 32:16Verse 6. And he directed the crowd to sit
- 32:18down on the ground, and he took seven, the seven lows.
- 32:21And having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his
- 32:24disciples to set before the people.
- 32:28He still used them, despite their limitations, despite their
- 32:36mountainous doubt. They should have had mountain
- 32:38size, not mustard seed faith. They should have had mountain
- 32:41size faith. After all they were exposed to.
- 32:46And what did they give him? A question of unbelief.
- 32:49And what does Jesus do? He works with them still, and he
- 32:57uses them to be extensions, vessels of his love.
- 33:01Why does God do that? Why does he even use us at any
- 33:06capacity? And I'll give you an answer,
- 33:10because the Apostle Paul gave the answer when he talked about
- 33:12how God used him. In Ephesians 3/8 he writes to
- 33:17me, though I am the very least of all the Saints.
- 33:20This grace was given to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable
- 33:26riches of Christ. Paul loved to teach on grace.
- 33:29He loved to preach on grace. But the idea of grace was not
- 33:32limited to salvation. Paul understood that the very
- 33:35fact that he was a minister was an expression of God's grace.
- 33:40You tell people, right? I'm sure maybe you've said it to
- 33:43your own family member or loved one or your husband or whatever.
- 33:46Maybe a dear friend that you can speak freely with and the Lord
- 33:49uses them. There's fruit in their lives and
- 33:51there's greater exposure and their ministry.
- 33:54And brother, be careful, don't let it get to your head, sister.
- 33:57Be careful. God has gifted you.
- 33:58His hand is clearly on your life.
- 33:59Just be careful. Don't don't get puffed up.
- 34:01And I'm sure that's sound advice.
- 34:03That is sound advice and it's possible, even in your spiritual
- 34:06pursuits, to become arrogant and prideful.
- 34:10But you know what Paul is showing me here?
- 34:11This is what he's showing me. The more God used them, the more
- 34:14humbled he was. The more the Lord used him, the
- 34:20more he was aware of the grace of God, because he understood
- 34:24this. This doesn't make sense for me
- 34:26to be in this position. And so whatever God did through
- 34:32him and only brought him lower. How is that possible when you
- 34:35understand? His Holiness, His righteousness,
- 34:39His standards, our unworthiness, our inconsistencies, our sin,
- 34:43our temptation to rebel against them.
- 34:46And yet still He makes us participations into his purposes
- 34:54and plans. So any episode in which God uses
- 34:59you, and at least in Paul's mind, He was brought lower and
- 35:02lower and lower. God doesn't need us.
- 35:05He does. But in his great delight and
- 35:09pleasure, he wants to. And it's a gift for you to
- 35:11enjoy, to see what God can do through you so that he can
- 35:16receive all the glory. It's a grace.
- 35:20It's a grace. These disciples here are are
- 35:22even experiencing God's grace in the midst of their doubt #3 Not
- 35:29just the number of resources, but the amount of leftovers
- 35:34gathered. Look here, verse 8.
- 35:38And they ate and were satisfied. What a phrase.
- 35:43And they took up the broken pieces left over 7 baskets full
- 35:50mark. Chapter 6 when they had fed the
- 35:525000 plus Jesus sends them out to get leftovers and they they
- 35:57grabbed the pieces and they were how many baskets?
- 36:0012 good 1212 baskets. Why?
- 36:05Because when they went to that region, they went for a retreat,
- 36:08and the retreat was suspended in order to serve strangers and as
- 36:12they sacrificed to serve these people.
- 36:15God honored them and gave them each a basket.
- 36:18I'm taking care of you. I didn't forget about you.
- 36:21They could have felt that the Lord brought us out here so that
- 36:24we can rest, rest with Him. We just came back from traveling
- 36:27and preaching and and now what do they come to?
- 36:30They see the hills covered with people.
- 36:33And it's very easy, very easy, to see your schedule interrupted
- 36:38and see your plans obstructed because of ministry, because of
- 36:41serving the Lord, because of opportunities to be like Christ,
- 36:45and that costing you something. And you think the Lord's
- 36:47forgotten me. And no, 12 baskets each in the
- 36:51hand of those disciples. But then you come here.
- 36:55They're serving people. And you're thinking O K12
- 36:58baskets are show up, that's what's going to happen, right?
- 37:01No, there there's 5 short, there's seven baskets.
- 37:04And I must admit, this might be more challenging for us English
- 37:08readers, because if you read the Bible in Greek, if you knew how
- 37:13to read it, and you had a Bible that was spelled out in the
- 37:16original manuscript, you would see it without question.
- 37:20The word for baskets is two different words and Jesus.
- 37:25Even communicates that here in Mark chapter 8 Scroll down to
- 37:28verse 19 when he speaks to the disciples.
- 37:30In another scene he says in Mark 8/19 when I broke the five lows
- 37:35in the 5000, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you
- 37:38take up? He's speaking about Mark chapter
- 37:406. They said to him 12 and the
- 37:43seven for the 4000, how many baskets full of broken pieces
- 37:46did you take up? And they said to him 7.
- 37:48So right there, if you believe it's the same occurrence, how do
- 37:50you explain this? He's talking about two different
- 37:53things. Side point.
- 37:55How many baskets when he talked about the five and the two, that
- 37:59word baskets is different than the word baskets when he says
- 38:02how many for the 4000 And the word for baskets for the 4000 is
- 38:10a basket much larger than what they had in Mark chapter 6.
- 38:15In fact, it's the same word that Luke used in Acts Chapter 9
- 38:20verse 25 when Paul and Damascus. Was able to escape by being
- 38:26placed in a basket and was brought down scaling the wall.
- 38:32It's the same word there. That's not the word used in mark
- 38:34chapter 6. And the word mark chapter 6 is
- 38:37coffee, coffees, notes, I believe.
- 38:39And here we see that the word for the bigger baskets is
- 38:42spuris. I'm not here trying to give you
- 38:47a Greek lesson. I barely can pronounce the words
- 38:49OK. What I'm trying to show you here
- 38:51is something quite important. There's something that you can
- 38:54take out of this, right? Even though these baskets were
- 38:56fewer in number, the container size proves that they were taken
- 39:01care of amply. They were more than OK, all of
- 39:06them were covered. And I meditated on this and I
- 39:10thought, well, the Lord could have just given them 12
- 39:12personally sized baskets like he did earlier.
- 39:15But the idea here is that his provision may not always look
- 39:19the same. It may not always look the same
- 39:23in every season, but one thing you can guarantee that it is
- 39:26always, always, always enough. Always.
- 39:33God didn't take care of me the same way he did in college that
- 39:36he is now. But you know what I can rejoice
- 39:39in? He took care of me all the way
- 39:42through. And it's the same for you.
- 39:45It's the same for you. We look here and we think, okay.
- 39:49The packages might be altered from time to time.
- 39:52Things might shift, things might be different, but the purpose is
- 39:56the same. To never leave us.
- 39:58To never leave you in your need as long as you serve him with
- 40:01your heart. So one.
- 40:03And since it's 12, the other seven.
- 40:05But here's the same result. They were taken care of.
- 40:11Things might have shifted recently, right?
- 40:13Things might have been taken. Things might have been replaced.
- 40:17It might not be what you thought it would be, but one thing is
- 40:19for certain, he's behind it and he has compassion for you.
- 40:26Which brings us to the final point of our message today.
- 40:30We talked not just about the one who made the predicament known,
- 40:33not just the resources at hand, not just the amount of the
- 40:37leftovers that were gathered, but finally the people that were
- 40:41ministered to verse 9. And there were about 4000
- 40:45people. And he sent them away and he
- 40:50sent them away. Mark chapter 6 tells us how many
- 40:545000 not including woman, not including children.
- 40:57Here we have 4000 people. Okay the number is different.
- 41:01No no, no, no, no. Read carefully.
- 41:04Where is Jesus? And where his disciples,
- 41:07geographically speaking, you would know if you were here last
- 41:11week. That's why you got to come to
- 41:12church every week you come here in Mark Chapter 7.
- 41:15Let's be reminded in verse 31. Then he returned from the region
- 41:19of tire and went through side onto the Sea of Galilee in the
- 41:22region of the Decapilis. That's where they're at and
- 41:25there was no mention of them transitioning from that place.
- 41:28And what is the Decapilis? It is the tent city region
- 41:34heavily populated with Gentiles. Jesus heals a deaf mute man.
- 41:41And it might be that that was the cause for the multitudes to
- 41:44flood towards him. And that's what we're seeing
- 41:47here, Mark, Chapter 8, that was common, a miracle brings about
- 41:50the masses. And so you have these crowds
- 41:53that come to Jesus, and here's the thing, he has compassion on
- 41:59them. But who are they?
- 42:00They're not Jews, at least primarily.
- 42:04The 5000 Jews Jews, John Chapter 6.
- 42:10They recognized him as the prophet that Moses spoke about
- 42:13and they wanted to make him king.
- 42:17Gentiles still has compassion. He didn't treat them any
- 42:25different. Yes, the the focus of his
- 42:29ministry was for the Jews, at least during his time.
- 42:31It would be different when the apostles would be sent out.
- 42:33But here we see a glimpse of what's to come, Jesus having
- 42:37compassion on all. Not some.
- 42:42Not the chosen people who had the privilege of knowing the
- 42:44oracles of God, the manifestations of God, the
- 42:47messengers of God. No, even these pagans, these
- 42:52idol worshippers, we'll be able to taste something of the
- 42:55compassion of Jesus because it was always there from the
- 42:58beginning. You know what that word
- 43:00compassion is in the original, to be moved in one's bowels.
- 43:05A deep seeded feeling of sympathy that you can actually
- 43:10feel in your gut. Not just I feel bad for them.
- 43:17You know, I have some extra virtue in me today.
- 43:19Let's just perform a miracle. No, he was moved and it was
- 43:23turning him inside. And you think about the Jews,
- 43:28They they had so much privilege, their history and the resources,
- 43:33the divine literature that was. At their disposal.
- 43:36And Jesus has compassion. You know, you could have grown
- 43:37up in church and testified to that same kind of experience.
- 43:42You've known it, you've heard it, You've seen it, You've
- 43:46memorized it. You're trying to fight to stay
- 43:49awake because you're so familiar with the scene.
- 43:54And just like the Jews who had so much just by their heritage,
- 43:57Jesus still has compassion on them.
- 44:01And we tend to think, right. We tend to think that Jesus
- 44:07favors those and he moves in those lives that had parents who
- 44:12are faithful, have a lineage of people who are ministry serving
- 44:16Him. No.
- 44:17You come here and you realize he has compassion even on those who
- 44:21have no connection whatsoever to him.
- 44:27It's very hard to preach to the Gospels and not get
- 44:29evangelistic. Very hard.
- 44:33So just give me a couple minutes and we'll get packing, putting
- 44:35our shorts and going to the picnic.
- 44:38But this isn't this isn't a job 1-2.
- 44:43This isn't. We're not playing games here,
- 44:45right? And in these days, there is no
- 44:48time to play any games. In the days that we're living
- 44:51in, not one service should be wasted.
- 44:55I heard a pastor say when he started his church with his
- 44:58ministers. We will never, ever have a
- 45:00throwaway service. Never.
- 45:02Just let's just get this through.
- 45:03I'm tired this week. Never.
- 45:07Souls hang in the balance, and I come to you in the name of the
- 45:12Lord Jesus Christ to proclaim to you the compassion of God for
- 45:17your soul. Christ has a heart filled with
- 45:23compassion for you, and he longs for you, not just to know
- 45:28satisfaction in this life. There is a satisfaction that
- 45:32goes beyond that reaches deeper than your pockets being full and
- 45:38your body being free from disease.
- 45:39No, you have a spirit that is fractured, that is disconnected
- 45:45from the living God who created you.
- 45:48But Christ came as the bridge. Christ came as the Great
- 45:52Physician. Christ came to heal you.
- 45:56Not just to open your eyes, not just to even open your ears to
- 46:00make you walk, but to bring you back to life from the core of
- 46:05your being. He has compassion for you.
- 46:09He's not indifferent in heaven. He's not trigger happy waiting
- 46:14to send you to an eternal torment.
- 46:17He's not looking for you to trip, so he has one more reason
- 46:21to pour out his wrath on you. No, no, no, no.
- 46:25He left glory. And he came into the stinking,
- 46:29filthy, putrid world that saw the holiest man who has ever
- 46:34lived, that who did nothing but good, who never made a mistake,
- 46:39who never slipped, who had never done anything wrong.
- 46:44And they spat on him, and they dragged his name in the mud and
- 46:49they dragged his body through torture.
- 46:51And they nailed him there like an ornament and celebrated his
- 46:55death, gambled for his clothing, blasphemed him until his final
- 47:00breath. Why?
- 47:04Because he's filled with compassion.
- 47:08And he has compassion for you. You.
- 47:11Yes, here in 2023 with your with your nice job and your nice car
- 47:16and. With your privileges here in the
- 47:18United States of America, even here now the living Christ is
- 47:23moved for you, and He wants you. He doesn't want to just use you.
- 47:29He doesn't just want you. As a servant, He has a myriad of
- 47:32angels who sing in perfect pitch, who don't hesitate to
- 47:38obey Him. Seraphin who cover their face,
- 47:41who cover their feet, and with two other wings, who are flying
- 47:44ready to move at the. Moment he gives him a command.
- 47:47He doesn't need your service, but he wants your heart.
- 47:53Because out of love the God who is self-sufficient who is?
- 47:56Not lonely, who doesn't need anything from you.
- 48:01Still wants you for what? He loves you.
- 48:06Well, why? I don't know.
- 48:13He loves you, and he wants you, and he wants intimacy with you.
- 48:16He wants you to be in heaven with him forever and ever.
- 48:20And though we see through a glass dimly, he wants you to
- 48:23walk with him. In this life, you were created
- 48:27to walk with God, not for a career, not to find the most
- 48:33beautiful wife or husband you can find.
- 48:36Not so that you can stuff your closet with clothes and get the
- 48:39newest edition of that phone. That's not your purpose.
- 48:43That's not why you're here. To know God and to enjoy him
- 48:50forever, to glorify him and in glorifying he would be blessed.
- 48:56And you. Will be satisfied because that's
- 48:59why you were created. And in the name of the Lord
- 49:02Jesus Christ, this gospel, this good news, it was just rounded
- 49:06to in one single way, repent and belief.
- 49:11Recognize what your sin has done.
- 49:12Recognize what your sin will bring you to recognize what sin
- 49:16is, turn from it. Because he took the sin, your
- 49:23sin, the sin of the city of Chicago, the sin of the state of
- 49:27Illinois, the sin of every state of this nation, the sin of the
- 49:30world. Upon his shoulder.
- 49:34And God poured out his wrath on his Son in your place, so that
- 49:43you would buy faith, a repentant faith, would drink the cup of
- 49:47his fellowship and know his pleasure.
- 49:50His mouth was dry and was thirsty, so that you would know
- 49:54living water. His brow was pierced with
- 49:58thorns. So that your mind could be
- 50:00renewed and renewed and renewed. His hands were pierced so that
- 50:05whatever you've done with those hands would be cleansed.
- 50:07His feet were penetrated so that wherever your feet have gone
- 50:11where they shouldn't have gone, he will remember no more.
- 50:13This is the gospel. This is the good news.
- 50:18There is no other God like this God, and there is no other way
- 50:22to be saved but through his name.
- 50:34And so I invite you today to receive Jesus Christ as your
- 50:38Lord and Savior. I invite you today to realize
- 50:41that everything can change today.
- 50:44Even if you have to miss that picnic, we're going to have
- 50:47plenty more. Give your life to him, Sit down,
- 50:52ask questions if your heart is already convinced and convicted,
- 50:56and cry out to the living God. Cry out and trust that as you do
- 51:00with a sincerity. And with humility, the Spirit
- 51:06bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.
- 51:08You will know when you've been born again.
- 51:12Lord, we thank you for the service.
- 51:15We thank you for bringing us in this place.
- 51:17We thank you for the lessons from the miracle of the feeding
- 51:20of the 4000. Thank you that your word has
- 51:23been beautifully authored by the perfect one.
- 51:27There is not one corner of this Bible.
- 51:29Not one period mark. Not one word that is by
- 51:32accident. Everything has been placed for
- 51:34our instruction and our insight concerning you.
- 51:37We pray, Lord, that as we worship you, that our hearts
- 51:41would be given to you in a fresh way for the heart that is not
- 51:45surrendered to you yet We pray that today would be the day
- 51:49where they can say not physically but spiritually.
- 51:52I was hungry, but now I'm satisfied I was empty, now I'm
- 51:56full. I was lost, but I'm found.
- 52:00I was confused, but now I see His compassion.
- 52:03Lord, may that be the testimony of those in here who don't know
- 52:06you. And Lord, for those who know
- 52:08you, we thank you. That you've searched it out for
- 52:12us, that we can leave here more encouraged.
- 52:14That our tomorrows are taken care of, that you care for us in
- 52:17every way possible, and that there is no God like our God.
- 52:21In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
- 52:23Oh, we just stand. Yes, stand.
- 52:25You can get excited. It's the House of God and
- 52:28worship the Lord. Jesus.
- 52:30The.
