Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome aboard everybody. It's time for the UConn Football Coaches Show.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Jason Candle is with us. I'm Mike Crispino. We rehash
- 0:07Speaker 1: what happened on the weekend, look ahead a little bit
- 0:09Speaker 1: to Southern Miss, talk about some big college issues perhaps.
- 0:14Speaker 1: We get some time with the coach every week and
- 0:16Speaker 1: we kind of gets you to where you need to
- 0:18Speaker 1: be as far as UConn football is. Jason, this Maryland
- 0:22Speaker 1: team came in. UConn struck first on the weekend, 7-0 lead.
- 0:27Speaker 1: It was all good. From that point, in your view,
- 0:31Speaker 1: after looking at everything over the last 24 hours or so,
- 0:35Speaker 1: how did the game play out if you analyze it?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, obviously, I think we got off to
- 0:41Speaker 2: a decent start. There were some opportunities there that maybe
- 0:45Speaker 2: we could have you know, accelerated our success a little
- 0:49Speaker 2: bit earlier than maybe what it, than what had happened.
- 0:51Speaker 2: But we were able to, you know, play a pretty
- 0:54Speaker 2: even first quarter. And then the second quarter, we just,
- 0:57Speaker 2: we just weren't, weren't very good in the second quarter.
- 0:59Speaker 2: And then in the third quarter, you know, we had
- 1:01Speaker 2: that first drive coming out of half. And I thought that,
- 1:03Speaker 2: you know, it was critical that we produced some points
- 1:04Speaker 2: there and we didn't, you know, and then, you know,
- 1:08Speaker 2: give credit to Maryland and that quarterback. I mean, he
- 1:10Speaker 2: hit 11 of 11 passes in the third quarter. I
- 1:12Speaker 2: thought he was excellent. And the receivers made some really
- 1:14Speaker 2: tough contested catches and, Um, you know, that kind of
- 1:17Speaker 2: pushed the lead out to where, you know, we got
- 1:19Speaker 2: a little one sided and had to throw it every
- 1:20Speaker 2: play and that's just not who we are. So, um,
- 1:24Speaker 2: kind of recipe for disaster there in the second half. But, uh, yeah,
- 1:27Speaker 2: I mean, we've got to figure out how to sustain
- 1:29Speaker 2: success and we're playing a really top flight opponent like
- 1:32Speaker 2: we were, um, You know, and this is a young
- 1:35Speaker 2: team going through some growing pains in the young part
- 1:38Speaker 2: of a season. So you can find a way to
- 1:40Speaker 2: really highlight the good things that we did and then
- 1:42Speaker 2: do a really good job making sure that we hammer
- 1:44Speaker 2: home the points where we weren't maybe having the success
- 1:46Speaker 2: that we wanted to have.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess, I mean, you look at the first quarter,
- 1:50Speaker 1: the offense produced 71 yards, seven points. Next three quarters,
- 1:53Speaker 1: 85 yards. Was it something that Maryland was able to
- 1:57Speaker 1: do to kind of, you know, stuff the Huskies offense
- 2:00Speaker 1: and keep them from getting any momentum?
- 2:04Speaker 2: Well, it's a good defensive front, you know, and then
- 2:06Speaker 2: you add the fact that we have the element of
- 2:08Speaker 2: a quarterback that can run, so you get another defender
- 2:10Speaker 2: down there consistently, so it makes it a little bit
- 2:12Speaker 2: harder to run the ball. And it really challenges us
- 2:15Speaker 2: at the line of scrimmage and challenges us to throw it,
- 2:17Speaker 2: and we weren't able to do it at a high level.
- 2:19Speaker 2: So we weren't very good on third down, which then
- 2:23Speaker 2: ultimately leads us to figure out why that was, and,
- 2:25Speaker 2: you know, we just weren't really good to start the drive. So,
- 2:30Speaker 2: and again... And we had, you know, we got to
- 2:32Speaker 2: give a couple sacks and just some things that just
- 2:35Speaker 2: didn't go our way, just not real efficient offensively the
- 2:37Speaker 2: rest of the game.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Yeah, Huskies ran 31 times for 67 yards. You mentioned
- 2:42Speaker 1: third downs, three of 11. And a lot of, you know,
- 2:45Speaker 1: a lot of coaches will say third down, obviously, you know,
- 2:48Speaker 1: converting is big, but you got to gain yards on
- 2:50Speaker 1: first down too, right?
- 2:51Speaker 2: 100%, right? I mean, you're in those scenarios where, you know,
- 2:56Speaker 2: you want to be able to, to move it a
- 2:58Speaker 2: little bit and get some productive plays early in the
- 3:01Speaker 2: down sequence. And, you know, I think that helps you
- 3:04Speaker 2: getting towards, you know, midfield and putting yourself in a
- 3:07Speaker 2: position where you can utilize fourth down as another down,
- 3:10Speaker 2: regardless of the score. So, but when you get behind
- 3:13Speaker 2: the sticks, it kind of takes that element off the
- 3:15Speaker 2: table and you get a little bit of, you know,
- 3:17Speaker 2: predictable and one-sided there. And that happened to us a
- 3:20Speaker 2: few times.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Yeah, you mentioned Malik Washington, their sophomore quarterback. He's excellent.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Had a great freshman year, too. that it was kind
- 3:28Speaker 1: of like a dink and dunk offense for them. It
- 3:30Speaker 1: felt like they were throwing everything in the flat, you know,
- 3:33Speaker 1: five yards up across the line of scrimmage and then
- 3:35Speaker 1: see what happens. And most of the time you was
- 3:37Speaker 1: able to, you know, come up and make plays. But
- 3:40Speaker 1: if you don't make a play, if you miss a tackle,
- 3:42Speaker 1: that's when it turns into more than like little paper cuts,
- 3:46Speaker 1: doesn't it? Yeah.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I think that's a glaring, glaring thing that showed up
- 3:51Speaker 2: in the tape in the second half is we didn't
- 3:52Speaker 2: tackle very well in the second half, but, um, you know,
- 3:56Speaker 2: we got to work on that and we got to
- 3:58Speaker 2: prove there, but also too, like we have to play
- 4:00Speaker 2: better team football where our defense isn't out there so
- 4:03Speaker 2: many plays and so many snaps. So, um, you know,
- 4:06Speaker 2: you can't, can't put it all on those guys. You gotta,
- 4:08Speaker 2: you gotta do your part offensively and you gotta make
- 4:10Speaker 2: sure that, you know, you're, you're playing complimentary ball, as
- 4:13Speaker 2: I mentioned. So, um, yeah, early in the year, I mean,
- 4:17Speaker 2: you know, you see a lot of, all of it,
- 4:19Speaker 2: a lot of it all over college football, you know,
- 4:21Speaker 2: perimeter plays and things like that. And, really challenging guys
- 4:25Speaker 2: to continue to tackle at a really high level.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Yeah, they ran 78 plays, UConn 52, so that's to
- 4:31Speaker 1: your point. You got to get your defense off the
- 4:34Speaker 1: field when you can because, I mean, fatigue does come
- 4:37Speaker 1: into play, doesn't it, for a unit? I mean, it
- 4:40Speaker 1: was a nice day there. The sun was out. The
- 4:42Speaker 1: temperatures were reasonable, but still, 78 plays, a long time
- 4:46Speaker 1: to be out there on defense.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a lot, especially in the second half where
- 4:51Speaker 2: you're needing critical stops, so But I think our guys,
- 4:54Speaker 2: I mean, for the most part, handled it well. I mean,
- 4:56Speaker 2: a few guys were really high in rep counts. Other
- 4:58Speaker 2: guys were, you know, that we had a couple of
- 5:00Speaker 2: really good, solid, you know, rotation things going where, you know,
- 5:04Speaker 2: some guys that are typically, you know, in that second
- 5:08Speaker 2: unit got in there and made some really, really good
- 5:09Speaker 2: plays and really helped, you know, our cause and really
- 5:12Speaker 2: helped their own cause and maybe even earned some more
- 5:14Speaker 2: opportunities down the road. But, yeah, good team that challenged
- 5:17Speaker 2: us in all three phases. And, you know, we got
- 5:20Speaker 2: to just play better team football.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Jason Candle with us, UConn head football coach, UConn Football
- 5:26Speaker 1: Coaches Show. Coach, for our listeners that don't really know
- 5:29Speaker 1: the ins and outs of what you've got to do
- 5:31Speaker 1: after a game in the next 24 hours to kind
- 5:34Speaker 1: of figure out what's going on, what's your schedule like?
- 5:40Speaker 1: Do you go in a dark room and start looking
- 5:42Speaker 1: at every piece of tape you can find? What do
- 5:44Speaker 1: you have to do in those 24 hours after a
- 5:47Speaker 1: game to kind of figure out what just happened?
- 5:51Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I think with today's technology, I mean,
- 5:53Speaker 2: you get to see a lot of the plays on
- 5:56Speaker 2: the sideline throughout the course of the game on the iPad.
- 5:58Speaker 2: So you have a you have a little bit of
- 6:00Speaker 2: knowledge of what went wrong because you're trying to ultimately
- 6:03Speaker 2: fix these things in game, you know, and at the
- 6:06Speaker 2: halftime and all that stuff.
- 6:07Speaker 1: So.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think you got a good idea
- 6:10Speaker 2: what's up, but there's a there's a fine line there
- 6:12Speaker 2: of making sure you get back and you fix and
- 6:13Speaker 2: you cut up the tape and you're you got a
- 6:15Speaker 2: good way to present the problems and the issues and
- 6:18Speaker 2: make the corrections to your team. You know, and then
- 6:20Speaker 2: ultimately there, you know, from there, you got to get
- 6:23Speaker 2: moving on the next opponent because, you know, the week
- 6:27Speaker 2: starts starts over pretty quickly. So there's not there's not
- 6:29Speaker 2: much time to, you know. dwell on the past, whether
- 6:33Speaker 2: it's really, really good or really, really bad, you've got
- 6:34Speaker 2: to kind of move forward. So, yeah, make the corrections,
- 6:38Speaker 2: show the guys what they need to fix, and, you know,
- 6:40Speaker 2: maybe point out some of the good that maybe happened
- 6:42Speaker 2: throughout the course of the game that we can build
- 6:43Speaker 2: on and gain momentum from, you know, and turn your
- 6:46Speaker 2: page to the next opponent.
- 6:48Speaker 1: All right, Jason Candle with us, back with more after
- 6:50Speaker 1: a break. This is the UConn Football Coaches Show on Learfield.
