Latest / A Hamster With a Blunt Penknife - a Doctor Who Commentary podcast / Talks to Dylan Rees about his choice of The Tenth Planet (4/4)
Transcript
- 0:23None. Hamster with a blunt.
- 0:34Pen knife for doing quicker, quicker, quicker.
- 0:39That is fair. Well, look, it's all lined up
- 0:41here. So that just leads me to say
- 0:44welcome back to a hamster with a blunt pen knife, the Doctor Who
- 0:48commentary podcast and apologize for anyone listening.
- 0:51You've had to hear that four Times Now.
- 0:54Exactly. But hello, Dylan.
- 0:55Hello. It's far from being all over,
- 0:57isn't it? It's far from being all over.
- 1:02He does sound a bit drunk in this episode, doesn't he?
- 1:05He's probably on the Brandy in between takes.
- 1:09Well, we are here for the 10th Planet episode 4.
- 1:13I am watching the fabulous animation.
- 1:17What are you choosing to watch? I too will be watching the
- 1:20animation and we'll get into why I chose this version I think in
- 1:24a little bit, but animation all the way.
- 1:27Before we do, what do you think of the telesnap reconstructions?
- 1:31I think a telesnap reconstruction for 25 minutes of
- 1:36Doctor Who is great and I love the effort that goes into them.
- 1:40I can't watch a six part story of Telusnap recons.
- 1:43Having said that, as a teenager, a very strange teenager, I would
- 1:47send away for all the recons and I would spend hours watching
- 1:50them. You know, I had them all.
- 1:52Fury from the Deep, The Massacre, anything I could get
- 1:55my hands on to get closer to those missing episodes?
- 1:58Nobody can see, but just down here on this shelf is all the
- 2:02Doctor Who DVDs and Marv Rath. I've got all the silver boxes
- 2:08and made-up all the covers for all the missing stories that
- 2:11he's got all the Tele snap constructions for so.
- 2:14What a bloody. I feel as if I've got the entire
- 2:17library of Doctor Who, even though I don't.
- 2:19I, I love that they go to so much effort to make them as fans
- 2:23like when the fan recons were available and now like more
- 2:27professionally so on the on the releases.
- 2:30But I love the fact we've got the option to have Tele snaps or
- 2:33animations because you know, when they inevitably do Dalek's
- 2:38Master plan in some form, 12 episodes or nine episodes or
- 2:42whatever it is that they're missing is not something I want
- 2:45to sit through. A telesnap that you come for.
- 2:47Someone's going to jump in now and go.
- 2:48There are no telesnaps for for Dalek's Master Plan, but there
- 2:53are there's some from the Feast of Stephen.
- 2:56Well, I've got a question for the audience, and that is, one,
- 3:00what do you prefer, telesnaps or animations?
- 3:04And two, could you please, at some point during this episode,
- 3:07let us know what you think of the 10th planet and we'd love to
- 3:11read out your thoughts. Now spoilers for a future
- 3:14hamster book club, but I've read a book recently that has a
- 3:18written chapter that's all done and tell us that reconstruction
- 3:22form. Genius, isn't it?
- 3:24It's Paul Mars. Is it Third degree?
- 3:26Is that how you say? I think that's it, yeah.
- 3:27Yeah, what a genius. It's so cheeky, honestly.
- 3:34Well, look, shall we skip in? Let's do it.
- 3:37Shall I can just do regenerations and all other
- 3:40minutiae? Yeah, perfect.
- 3:42So let's press play in 54321 Go. Mark Cockrum says it's telesnaps
- 3:53for him. Telesnaps all the way I am.
- 3:57I think this is this is is this planet 10?
- 4:00Is that what they call the? Do the animation for this?
- 4:02Something like that I can't remember.
- 4:04Or planet 30, I don't know. 10th planet animations.
- 4:07Oh, they. Anthony Carroll says both.
- 4:10I mean, yeah, it's good to have the option now.
- 4:13We're lucky to have the option. Exactly, like I know at one
- 4:17point they said they weren't going to do them all, but I feel
- 4:19like in 10 years time we will have a complete set of Doctor
- 4:21Who animations one way or another.
- 4:24They may take a little break here and there, but you know,
- 4:27soon we'll have the underwater menace and then probably the
- 4:30smugglers as well. How exciting.
- 4:32The weird thing about the animation of this episode is
- 4:35suddenly everything is a little more dynamic.
- 4:39You know, the movement, the shots, the effects look a bit
- 4:43more impressive, and I don't object to it at all.
- 4:46I don't mind them tidying things up for a modern audience.
- 4:50I. I think you have to like, and
- 4:53it's this thing of if you try and do it exactly like 60s TV on
- 4:57the sort of style of animation that they do, you're just going
- 5:00to have very static characters because you don't get the
- 5:03nuances of performance that you have to make things more
- 5:05interesting. I love that Hartnell just
- 5:07immediately jumps back into action like.
- 5:10He's just. Woke up.
- 5:12What's that? What is?
- 5:13So next week? OK, I'm awake.
- 5:15Now the sets here are they photographs of the actual sets
- 5:20sort of blurred out and that they they put the animation.
- 5:23Together. Yes, I think.
- 5:24I think they are. I I quite like that approach and
- 5:27I'm surprised it. Hasn't been.
- 5:28I think you can clearly tell when when they're outside in the
- 5:31snow, you know that that is. Yeah.
- 5:34Well, I mean, it makes sense, doesn't it?
- 5:35And then you haven't got to animate the sets.
- 5:38So Joe the wedding will cheerfully watch either when it
- 5:41comes to telesnaps and animations, Daniel says
- 5:44animation for me, although telesnaps can still be quite
- 5:47atmospheric. Anthony Carroll goes third most
- 5:50important episode in Doctor Who this so I want I'm assuming an
- 5:54earthly child, the dialects and this or power of the dialects.
- 5:59Come on, Anthony, tell us what the other?
- 6:00Two. Yeah, We want to know what one
- 6:01and two is. Anthony, come on.
- 6:05I I do like the style of animation here.
- 6:07I think it's it's here we go And then for Child One and Daleks
- 6:11two, there we go. Thank you.
- 6:13Well, this is the same people that did the Moon Base.
- 6:17Yeah, I believe that's a really popular animation with fans, I
- 6:21think. Did they do Reign of Terror as
- 6:24well? I don't know whether they did,
- 6:26but Reyna Terra gets unfairly maligned, I think.
- 6:30I think it's trying to do something interesting with two.
- 6:33I'm a big Reyna Terra fan, I'm a big Dennis Spooner fan in
- 6:36general, but trying to do something with two.
- 6:39Quite filler episodes I would say.
- 6:42No, no, I haven't done that one. You know have.
- 6:43You not? Oh, I will happily talk Reign of
- 6:46Terror with you anytime. Let's talk and I would love to
- 6:51talk about animation because I am one of those detractors, so.
- 6:54Right, well, right. We'll we'll put it in the diary.
- 6:56It's it's it's a little distracting in a way that this
- 6:59isn't. Yeah, it feels sort of 60s paced
- 7:02enough for me. But then like there, that
- 7:05massive close up on his eyes and then the big close up on the gun
- 7:09that you just wouldn't have had that, I don't think in that.
- 7:12You're you're he's just trying to they're just trying to make
- 7:14it more interesting, which I think you have to.
- 7:16And I love the little push insurance that they do.
- 7:18Now the cyber men look fucking brilliant.
- 7:21The the style of cyber men in animation format are amazing.
- 7:26And this lovely shot they cut to a few times as the half head of
- 7:29the cyber man. It's just brilliant.
- 7:31Now I've said this many times, why there isn't a Doctor Who
- 7:34animated series, I have no idea. But this the cyber men, if they
- 7:39ever do one should surely be, you know, in the running for a
- 7:43return. Maybe you watch this space.
- 7:45Have you? Well exactly.
- 7:47Have you seen the sketches for the abandoned 50th Anniversary
- 7:50Doctor animation series, which also features This was all the
- 7:53classic Doctors they asked people to pitch and they were
- 7:56going to do news stories for classic Doctors and the the the
- 7:59artworks out there and but Stephen Moffitt decided he want
- 8:02to concentrate on the main show, which he was having enough
- 8:04trouble making at the time. And you send send me links to
- 8:07those please I'd love to see. I think they're either on SFX or
- 8:10Den of Geek somewhere. I'll have to dig them out.
- 8:12Did you see when the sideman came in right and he set off his
- 8:16crotch light and suddenly all the sidemen were in the
- 8:20silhouette? Yes, it looks incredible.
- 8:23It's such a great image. When when my crops goes off,
- 8:26sometimes I see everything in silhouette too.
- 8:28I mean, I've, I've been in your man cave, so I can attest to
- 8:32that. So Mark Cockrum says The 10th
- 8:35Planet is a fine story for Hartnell's finale.
- 8:37Having watched all of the Hartnell era in order, it gave
- 8:40me a newfound appreciation for the First Doctor and his
- 8:43stories. He also goes on to say the
- 8:44animation on this story is absolutely mint.
- 8:48Anthony Carroll says Animate Time and the Rani.
- 8:51Oh yes, after that soundtrack comes out, that's the next
- 8:55project from the 60th. Absolutely.
- 8:58I have to agree with Mark Cochran.
- 8:59I think it it's a great finale for the era and fitting that
- 9:03it's sort of a pilot for the for what's to come as well.
- 9:07But Hartnell does not lose his mojo as often reported do.
- 9:13You know why I think this is a great finale for the era.
- 9:16Like we've talked about how this is a template for what's to
- 9:18come. So you could watch this and go,
- 9:19oh, well, it's just like so and so.
- 9:21But all those stories are to come.
- 9:22Yeah. The William Hartnell era was all
- 9:25about innovation, experimentation, trying new
- 9:28things. And right at the end of the era,
- 9:31they tried something brand new again.
- 9:34It just so happens to be that was the blueprint going forward.
- 9:36Absolutely, and it works. It absolutely works.
- 9:40And now, you know, we'd have, you know, Susan would be back,
- 9:43Ian and Barbara would be back. It'd be very navel gazing.
- 9:46But this is just a brand new Doctor Who story, brand new type
- 9:49of Doctor Who story. This is what we're doing.
- 9:52And I just love the fact that it's got such big ideas,
- 9:55although we sort of mocked it a little bit.
- 9:56But, you know, a planet of twin planet coming along, a race of
- 10:01cybernetic humans that have replaced their body.
- 10:03I mean, they're massive ideas. Absolutely.
- 10:06And the my favorite little throwback of the episode is he
- 10:10wears the same costume as he wears an Unearthly child at the
- 10:12beginning and the end of it. He's got the hat and the cloak
- 10:15and you know, it's just a little call.
- 10:18That's the. First time I've ever realised
- 10:19that. Of course he does, yeah.
- 10:22And I think I could be wrong, but I think it's the only two
- 10:25stories he wears that get up. Come along Dylan, my child,
- 10:28fetch my cloak. Come along, Anthony Carroll says
- 10:338 out of 10 Great, iconic and important story.
- 10:38Yeah, I completely agree. First invasion of Earth as as
- 10:43what? As DOI as Dalek's invasion of
- 10:46Earth was aftermath. Oh, I see what you mean.
- 10:48Yes, they'd already, they'd already invaded at that point.
- 10:53Yeah, I suppose that is true. I can't think of a another in
- 10:56fact, because the war machines is a contemporary sort of threat
- 10:59that that, that, that they've set up.
- 11:01So. Would you so it just by puko
- 11:04still has happened to be the person who did the dialect
- 11:07invasion of earth hamster commentary.
- 11:10And we talked about that, about how we were coming in after the
- 11:13drama after the invasion and how it kind of blunted the the drama
- 11:18of that story because of it. But actually this is the other
- 11:21side, isn't it? Yeah, probably works better for
- 11:25it. I'm.
- 11:25Sure, I said it on on the commentary, but my dream Doctor
- 11:28Who spin off from the new Disney era of Doctor Who is Doctor Who,
- 11:33a Rogue One spin off about the Daleks invading Earth and the
- 11:38events that lead up to Dalek's invasion of Earth.
- 11:41And then the final episode is sort of a a retelling, but from
- 11:44somebody else's perspective of of Dalek's invasion of Earth.
- 11:47It's how the rebels fight the Daleks never happened.
- 11:50But that's my pitch for a Doctor Who's been off I'm.
- 11:53Literally hard right now live on YouTube that's you have to move.
- 11:59Over to your only fans, aren't we don't.
- 12:01Even don't ask Dylan what his other idea though for ATV show
- 12:04is because he wants to. He wants to rewrite Doctor Who
- 12:07and start off from scratch again.
- 12:11All the. Stories again, but with more
- 12:12money. Actually, we were talking about
- 12:15that earlier, weren't we? Yeah.
- 12:18Very true. All these characters.
- 12:22I think the animation here is very expressive in a way that
- 12:26they don't always get in some of the modern animations.
- 12:29And I think it helps that we've had three episodes of knowing
- 12:33what these characters are like before we jump into the
- 12:35animation. Now, at one point this was seen
- 12:39as like the missing episode that everybody wanted returned.
- 12:43I think that has changed a little bit now.
- 12:46Would you agree? Yeah, I think so.
- 12:49I well, I think because we've got three episodes of roughly
- 12:52what this looked like, yeah. And we've got the important bit
- 12:55at the end. So what's the?
- 12:57Number one now then. I think it's probably Power of
- 13:01the Daleks episode one or six. Yeah, I mean, I would, I would
- 13:06love to see those more than this.
- 13:08Absolutely mine. Unfortunately, mine is the macro
- 13:10terror. Anything from the macro terror?
- 13:12Did you know this week's rumour that the whole of the Space
- 13:14Pirates has been found? Brilliant.
- 13:17I would, I bet. Is cruel, I bet if.
- 13:21If Space Pirates found it would be absolutely fucking brilliant.
- 13:25I've always liked episode 2 and the the soundtrack sounds very
- 13:30weird. I remember speaking to Mark
- 13:31about this and we were saying, you know, there's that weird
- 13:33thing, there's a guy hiding under a table, you've got Milo
- 13:37Clancy. It's full of great characters.
- 13:39Spam me another slice of bread. Now what's his name?
- 13:44The other fellow? Milo Clancy.
- 13:47List 79. List 79.
- 13:48Yeah, that guy. What?
- 13:51Are you doing in the facility of Video 41?
- 13:55Oh. Daniel Rawnsley says 10th Planet
- 13:58is a huge piece of Doctor Who history introduces so many new
- 14:02things, even as an era comes to an end.
- 14:05Nothing. Not for nothing did Steven
- 14:07Moffett pay tribute to it so many years later for his last
- 14:11story. Absolutely, Absolutely, Markham.
- 14:16'S got another comment there if you're watching now do the lads
- 14:20a favour and give it a like and feed the algorithm.
- 14:24Feed the algorithm. Yes, thank you very much.
- 14:27Thanks Mark. And yes, please do give give us
- 14:29a like and we should also chat about we should chat at Mark's
- 14:34podcast as well, which is a wonderful podcast.
- 14:36You've been on that, right? All of time and space.
- 14:38Yeah, yeah. I no, no, I I am yet to be on
- 14:42that. But he's.
- 14:43Been on my OH of. Course, that's where it came on.
- 14:46And did four naughty episodes of The Horns of Nyman with me.
- 14:50Absolutely. So this, I think my episode's
- 14:54due out in the next month or two because we did the Wheelers
- 14:56Wheel and space on all the time and space.
- 14:58And as I mentioned earlier, it was, it was, we had a great
- 15:01time, but it's not the most fantastic story to talk about.
- 15:06The only thing I get more excited about than Too Hot for
- 15:08TV episodes coming out is you appearing on other people's
- 15:11podcasts. You know, I think I might be a
- 15:13Dylan Reese Stan. Somebody's got to be.
- 15:21How are we going to defeat the side men here I.
- 15:23I don't don't they just sort of suck themselves to death.
- 15:28So they take the action there. What killed?
- 15:30Jon Perk we in the end of reportedly.
- 15:32Oh, is that right? I think you're talking about
- 15:35Patrick Trout at that convention, aren't you?
- 15:38Jon Pertwee, I mean, if you listen to the latest episode of
- 15:42Too Hot for TV, after the credits, there's a lengthy
- 15:44conversation about how Jon Pertwee is room and to have been
- 15:47able to suck his own penis. But lowering the tone, Lance,
- 15:50lowering the tone. Oh, I like to think it's true.
- 15:54Oh, everyone loves the race. Says like Mr. Cochrum of.
- 15:59Course, I've got both races as well.
- 16:02A double Reese. Reese's, As you might say,
- 16:05Reese's Pieces. People are being very indulgent
- 16:10with us now, aren't they? Ah, yes.
- 16:13Now look, I've noticed how harnesses have become a bit more
- 16:16exciting these days. So they're actually built into
- 16:18the set, unlike when Barbara and Jenny were holding up their own
- 16:21restraints in Dalek Invasion. Yeah, very true.
- 16:24I I'd love to see a bit more of this cyber spaceship.
- 16:27In fact, if there was one thing I wish the episode existed for,
- 16:30it would probably be to see the cyber spaceship in action.
- 16:35But like the rest of the sets, we know what they look like.
- 16:39It's true, it's true. I mean, people want this back
- 16:41for the for like the lead up to the regeneration.
- 16:44Don't know that's that's. Yeah.
- 16:46What's enticing about this SO? Anthony Carroll says 10th planet
- 16:50four Planet of the not Planet of the Daleks Power of the Daleks 6
- 16:54Daleks master #12 or EOD even. Of the Daleks 7 I believe.
- 16:59Even of the Daleks 7. Those were his four.
- 17:01He was back. Yeah, I'd take any of those
- 17:04something from the massacre or something from the myth makers.
- 17:07That's that's what I want. I want the the stories that are
- 17:11less talked about a little. I mean, they're all sorts about
- 17:13now. Why did?
- 17:14A a savages commentary mark recently and looking at those
- 17:18Tele snaps I'm like this looked good.
- 17:21I bet if this could, there's the one story that no fucker ever
- 17:23talks about is The Savages. Yeah, it'll be on everybody's
- 17:26lips if it did now. Did you do it recently or did
- 17:29you do half of it recently and the other half six months prior
- 17:32or whatever it was you? Really are listening to this,
- 17:34don't you? I'm a fan.
- 17:38I'm a fan. Oh, I.
- 17:39Love how it look even even in the animation.
- 17:41The cyber mouths just go. Yeah, I mean, they have to make
- 17:45the move slightly more, don't they?
- 17:47Because it's animation. No, I don't know when.
- 17:50Mondas breaks up is how they could have gone to town and done
- 17:54a spectacular sort of animated effect.
- 17:57And yeah, what they do is like 3 stills of it sort of cracking a
- 18:02bit like an egg. Absolutely.
- 18:04Which I think is. Both interesting to look at and
- 18:07maybe ish what it might look like at the time.
- 18:10I feel like that's when you see the Telusnap that there is
- 18:13something like that that happens, Mark Cockrum says the
- 18:15massacre is fantastic and so underrated.
- 18:19Massacre Four would be an interesting one because just to
- 18:21see how they actually filmed that actual massacre.
- 18:24Mark Cockrum, this is a live invite for you to come on and do
- 18:29the Massacre commentary, OK? Because I fucking love that
- 18:32story as well. Amazing.
- 18:34Amazing. I will.
- 18:35I will tune in for that. So the radiation is going to
- 18:40kill the Cybermen now, right? That's.
- 18:42Right. No, they don't use it.
- 18:44Some of them just fall down and die, and then some of them get
- 18:48radiation to death. I mean, they they do fall down
- 18:52fairly gracefully, but I've recently watched The Five
- 18:54Doctors and they get down on that chess board.
- 18:58Like they're having a nap. Like they.
- 18:59Really don't want to damage those costumes I like.
- 19:02The fact they removed the noses from the animated side of men a
- 19:05little bit, I, I think that's quite a cool move, just to make
- 19:08them look a little bit more alien.
- 19:10Do you? Understand why a certain corner
- 19:13of fandom gets up in arms about changes made to the animation.
- 19:19I've kind of got no time for us. I just think it's about making a
- 19:25product that's going to appeal to a wide, not a wider audience
- 19:28as in light they're never going to be shown on BBC One, but the
- 19:31widest possible audience. So making them more interesting
- 19:34I think it is that I've got no problem with.
- 19:37And I think it's very narrow minded to think that the 1000
- 19:41people that actually care about the changes are the core
- 19:45audience for these things. Do you care enough to start a
- 19:49crowdfund or ask £100 from people and to make an animation
- 19:53where everything's changed? I mean, I'm being naughty now.
- 19:59I'm sorry. I mean, look, Ian Levine has
- 20:02got. Well done.
- 20:03You went straight in there, Ian. Levine has got his followers.
- 20:06And if that's how you, what you want to spend your money, you by
- 20:09all means spend your money. Do that way, you know, like
- 20:14that's not what I do, but I've given my money to all sorts of
- 20:17I've spent money on all sorts of Doctor Who shits.
- 20:19So it's like there are worse ways to spend your money.
- 20:23I like, well, I can't feed myself at the end of the at the
- 20:26end of the month, I have to cancel all my Only Fans
- 20:28subscriptions. It's outrageous, actually, Carol
- 20:33says. Long arms is my gripe.
- 20:36Oh. Of the animations, there's a
- 20:38couple it's. Mainly Fury from the deal, isn't
- 20:40it, Mr. Tickle? Yeah.
- 20:43Absolutely. Yeah.
- 20:44No, they do look weird. I saw an interview with Gary
- 20:46Russell where we talked about that and they weren't supposed
- 20:48to be like that, but it was something, I think it was
- 20:50something to do with the processing or something of all
- 20:52the how they then converted it to sort of, you know, a
- 20:55different format that made the arms look ridiculously long.
- 20:58But yeah, can. I Ask you, is William Hartnell's
- 21:01last line of dialogue. Keep warm.
- 21:03It's something like that, yeah. Yeah.
- 21:06You won't go out of a line like that now would you?
- 21:08No. But I mean, it's it, I prefer it
- 21:10to some of the elongated speeches we've had of every
- 21:13don't. Eat avocado pear.
- 21:16I embrace you. Always use butter, never
- 21:21margarine and they. Say that oh, the classic series
- 21:24is the more melodramatic. Absolutely, absolutely.
- 21:27Mikey Smith has just joined us afternoon.
- 21:29Or if Mikey's just joined us for the climax.
- 21:35Our hair is fairly adept at that, you know.
- 21:39Since you're here, Mikey, I'm going to talk over this episode
- 21:43and proposition you live on air. I was talking to Joe earlier
- 21:47about QVC and the Tom Baker show that they had on QVC and I was
- 21:53thinking I must cover that on Too Hot for TV.
- 21:55And Mikey, you would be the perfect guest to come and review
- 21:58that. You've got to do the opening.
- 21:59Like a QVC opening. Hello and welcome to this hour.
- 22:07Today we have Cybermen GIMP masks.
- 22:11Now I love the way the Cybermen fall apart here.
- 22:14It's I mean when you see the stills and the telly snaps, like
- 22:18they just look really creepy. I love the fact that there's
- 22:20just they're sort of it's almost like the organic matter
- 22:22disintegrates, isn't it? And the the metallic and
- 22:26machinery part can't can't function without it.
- 22:29There's. Footage of them full.
- 22:30Oh no, that's from episode 3, isn't it?
- 22:32When they fall down in the snow, Yeah.
- 22:34But not not of their actual death.
- 22:35But there is there's a telly snap definitely I've seen, I've
- 22:38seen that still, I mean. Thank fuck Blue Peter borrowed
- 22:41the episode for the regeneration footage.
- 22:43Right? Absolutely.
- 22:45Imagine if we were speculating all these years with just the
- 22:48telly snaps now. I I want to talk about a myth
- 22:51about the regeneration process propagated by Annika Wills and
- 22:55Michael Cray's that it took ages.
- 22:57It didn't. It did not take ages.
- 23:00It was actually, you know, they fade between two different
- 23:03cameras and the effects I think is on 1/3 camera.
- 23:05They did a couple of takes of it and then moved on.
- 23:07It was not a lengthy process, but the stories was oh you know
- 23:11the technology it was on all day.
- 23:13It was, but it just, you know, it happened all day, but it did
- 23:16not. Mark Cochran says get Paul
- 23:19Wavers from Android to Tara. Tara to guest on because he used
- 23:22to be a presenter at QVC. Really.
- 23:25Well, do you know who else presented at QVC when I was
- 23:27there? Beverly Cressman.
- 23:30And what's the face who played Rey and Delta and the Bannerman?
- 23:34Oh. Wow.
- 23:35Beverly Cressman, For those in the not in the know, is Kate
- 23:38Debridge Stewart from Downtime the.
- 23:40Original and the best Kate Lee. Period.
- 23:42Kate Debridge Stewart. Yeah, Mike said.
- 23:45Oh no, go on after you. So lucky to have the
- 23:48regeneration itself. One thing that always seems
- 23:50weird is the way the Doctor's body is, is prone.
- 23:55It's like he's a sorry, I can't. There's something in the way of
- 23:58it. It's like he's a rag doll.
- 24:00Doesn't quite look Hartnall. Yeah, yeah, I'll get that.
- 24:05He like even this, this little clip here, which we've got that
- 24:09there's there's a bit of cine footage of it, like he's playing
- 24:12the sort of, you know, half dead man very well.
- 24:16What I like is where they've got the footage, they match the
- 24:21animation perfectly. That bit where he comes towards
- 24:23the camera like that, it's exactly like the cine footage.
- 24:28So I think they've been incredibly respectful as well.
- 24:30Yeah. I mean, this is it's all done
- 24:33with love, isn't it? Yeah.
- 24:34I mean, he's heading back to the TARDIS with the urgency of
- 24:37someone who's got explosive diarrhoea, but you know, it's
- 24:42far worse. As a man who loves a karaoke and
- 24:45empathon Mikey, since you just joined us, would you care to
- 24:50tell us what you think of the temp planet as a whole, please?
- 24:54And anybody else who's out there, please?
- 24:56We've had. A we've had a few people's
- 24:58reviews, but any anybody wants to give us their their final
- 25:02thoughts for the day like Jerry Springer it.
- 25:05It is AI think it's a quite a a quick climax, if you'll forgive
- 25:09me, but that's not really we have.
- 25:12Spent together. Yeah, Jesus Christ, I went.
- 25:17I'm so no, sorry, but the climax of the story is really this
- 25:21isn't it? It's in the TARDIS.
- 25:22It's this is the important thing now.
- 25:25Anthony Carroll says how much of A shock to the viewers was this
- 25:28at the time? Now it was announced in the
- 25:30papers, but they're sort of, it doesn't get much column inches.
- 25:33You know, it's not like headline news that we get now, so I could
- 25:37imagine there are a lot of people that this would have been
- 25:40a complete shock to. Yeah, I agree.
- 25:44I'd love. I'd love a surprise
- 25:46regeneration. I don't.
- 25:47Think it would have been a shock because I don't think people had
- 25:48a bloody clue what was going on and it wasn't until what came
- 25:51afterwards they're like, oh, William Hart was not coming
- 25:54back. It might have taken till the end
- 25:56of Power of the Darks. Daleks episode 6, Yeah.
- 26:00Very true. Or maybe even the.
- 26:01Highlanders episode one, yeah. Yeah.
- 26:03Now I've always thought limited technology and all, I get it.
- 26:07But the regeneration, it doesn't, it doesn't quite look
- 26:12like he's changing as much as you would think, you know, sort
- 26:15of done in that close up well. They said in the documentary
- 26:19their face structure is very similar, so they almost look
- 26:22like the same actor. Yeah.
- 26:24It's it's quite weird that so it's sort of a cliffhanger and
- 26:27you're you're actually sort of going what's happened?
- 26:29There's a light come out the doctor, but I don't think
- 26:31everybody would have caught on that it changed.
- 26:35I do wonder, if not entirely, but part of the reason why J&T
- 26:40went for such a different actor each time, was it made that
- 26:44regeneration, you know, it was obvious what was going on.
- 26:48Yeah, now, So what have we got in the comments?
- 26:51Mark Cochran says let's not forget the superior list Shaw
- 26:53from Probe When to die. No one could ever forget her.
- 26:56Once seen, it could never be unseen climbing.
- 26:59Up that lift shaft, now that air ventilation shaft.
- 27:02Do you remember? Mikey says, I really like how
- 27:07Hartnell takes on the side and then the confrontation between
- 27:09them of a highlight of what is a bit of a stood around and
- 27:12talking show feels like it lacks variety in settings.
- 27:16It is a very claustrophobic, you know, setting.
- 27:18And as we said, it's that sort of base and start of base on the
- 27:22siege. Daniel says well, here we go the
- 27:25long way round. Mikey says, but it's iconic and
- 27:29the regeneration is a as an idea is genius at the time was not
- 27:34just the at the time was not just to recast a role and not
- 27:39explain it. We are so lucky they decided to
- 27:41canonize the process. Now that was in this Lloyd
- 27:43actually he did that. He just reasoned that if the
- 27:45Doctor can travel in time and space, he's not a human and even
- 27:49if he was, he can change his appearance so it's in a slit.
- 27:52Lloyd, who ultimately came up with the idea of regeneration I.
- 27:56Don't think it was even really a thing until it happened again.
- 28:00It could have just been something that just happened
- 28:02once just to him. Well.
- 28:03It's that thing of it happens here and then the next time
- 28:07round they do it in a different way.
- 28:09The time laws changes appearance.
- 28:11So it's it's not said or established until the Pertwee
- 28:14era that it's it's regeneration. Is it and?
- 28:17When you get to the fucking 80s, mentioning in it every
- 28:20regeneration 4th, Goodness me, there's five of me now.
- 28:25Everybody's. Obsessed with this Joe Lewellen
- 28:27says pretty good Hartnell story. I joined the army in May 87 and
- 28:32the uniforms and the haircuts were way off.
- 28:34Really good animation in episode 4.
- 28:38How did the whole world seem to forget the invasion?
- 28:41I mean, that's the the issue with a lot of Doctor Who, isn't
- 28:44it? I can.
- 28:45Answer that question. No, it was answered in the
- 28:48Pandora Opens and The Big Bang. It all fell down Amy's crack.
- 28:52Absolutely. I would happily fall down Amy's
- 28:55crack. Mikey also says at the time it
- 28:59was normal just to recast. Yeah.
- 29:02Daniel Rosie says there's a target novel for Power of the
- 29:05Daleks prologue where UNIT comes in and clears up the mess at the
- 29:08Snow Cab. Yeah, wow.
- 29:11I didn't know. That.
- 29:14And Mikey points out without a narrative explanation, like like
- 29:18Bond, I suppose. Yeah, Bond changes, quota mass
- 29:20changes. Isn't it in every quota mass
- 29:22serial? They just do it.
- 29:24So the fact Mikey's right, the fact that it's part of the plot
- 29:27is absolutely, you know, I've been watching.
- 29:32A lot of neighbours recently, you know, and everyone's got
- 29:34very short memories in that as to what people look like.
- 29:40Nell. 'S just been.
- 29:41Recast in the new series, Little Nell, she was about a year ago,
- 29:45she was only about 6. Now she's about 15 a year later.
- 29:49And evil. She's got a fabulous evil plot.
- 29:52Every single shot she's looking at them like this.
- 29:54You know, like evil eyes. So it is a common problem in
- 29:57television? Yes, absolutely.
- 30:00Doctor Who's the only show? That actually makes a thing of
- 30:02it though, isn't it? Yeah, very true.
- 30:04And. I'm very wise, You know, the
- 30:07Crown does it even now that every few years they recast the
- 30:10Queen and Prince Harry and Philip and everybody else.
- 30:15But yeah, Queen Elizabeth, you've.
- 30:18Become another popular actress in the Now you're Olivia Coleman
- 30:24what's going on there was. Do you remember the most recent
- 30:29James Bond film? There was a rumour going round
- 30:31in the tabloids that was absolute bullshit that when
- 30:33Danny Ball was going to direct it, he wanted to actually do a
- 30:36regeneration like like Doctor Who.
- 30:40Oh, Mikey says Roseanne and Doctor Who are the only shows to
- 30:43make a deal out of the recast. I think Lower Decks, Star Trek
- 30:47Lower Decks has had a few things to say about recasting as well.
- 30:52Well. Daniel, you know.
- 30:53How we end Daniel Dylan, You know Dylan Reece, you said
- 30:59you're a. Fan sorry.
- 31:04Three things you First off you go.
- 31:08So my first. Thing is going to be cyber
- 31:11costume designed by Sandra Reed. I'm sure it's an obvious one
- 31:14that we're both going to go for, but my God, they look brilliant.
- 31:18I love those sock faces. I I love the bulky chest units.
- 31:22I love the Flyers, I love the cabling.
- 31:24I love the headlamps. It's so 60s but it's such a
- 31:27fantastic design. My. 1st is going to be the much
- 31:31underrated William Hartnell in this story, who does far more
- 31:35than I think people remember. He's especially strong in
- 31:38episodes one and two, and I think he he does that frown.
- 31:43This really. You really feel like there's
- 31:45something very wrong in Episode 4, which is an added layer of
- 31:48suspense on top of the danger that the story's already
- 31:51presenting. Absolutely.
- 31:54The next thing I'm going to go for is Innis Lloyd, the producer
- 31:57for coming up with the idea of regeneration, for just for
- 32:01guiding the show in a new direction and making it more in
- 32:05quotes, hard sci-fi, which it's not really, it's still a fucking
- 32:08ridiculous show. But I just think Innis Lloyd
- 32:11perhaps doesn't get the props he deserves and I think he's
- 32:14brilliant. Derek Martinez directed.
- 32:20I'll, I say 4, but it's 5. Isn't it because he did mission
- 32:22to the unknown as well? Yeah, I think so, yeah. 4.
- 32:26Very, very good stories. I think he does a great job of
- 32:30this. It's not easy because he's
- 32:32shooting in quite a tight set. He makes the sidemen a ghoulish
- 32:37and memorable creation, and he he's having to deal with
- 32:40Hartnell's health problems as well.
- 32:43I especially like the sequences outside in the snow.
- 32:47I think they're really atmospheric.
- 32:48He does snow again in the Ice Warriors, and I think he bests
- 32:52it there because he's got bigger sets and television has come on
- 32:55in a couple of years, you know? But yeah, Derek Martinez, I
- 32:58think he's always very good. The last story he does is Spear
- 33:01from Space, and I think that's probably some of the best
- 33:03location, some best direction we ever had.
- 33:05So yeah, absolutely. And then I'm going to go for the
- 33:09model work after. Actually, I don't know who did
- 33:11the model work, but I think, you know, I think this the
- 33:14spaceships look great. I think the rocket looks great.
- 33:17The the, the little model of the snow base and all that stuff.
- 33:19I think it looks really fantastic.
- 33:21So more work gets it from me. And then finally, I'm going to
- 33:25put in a punt for Polly and Ben, who you were right.
- 33:29They're a breath of fresh air when they come in.
- 33:31And I think they lead the show too soon.
- 33:35Jamie comes in, the focus is off them, but they're they're just,
- 33:38they've got a lot of energy. They're very sexy, you know, and
- 33:41I know I say that sort of thing all the time, but I don't think
- 33:44we've done sex in companions before.
- 33:47So they were, they were really sort of kicking Doctor Who into
- 33:51the swinging 60s as we're departing.
- 33:53Oh, no, we're sort of halfway through, aren't we?
- 33:55We're not. We're worried now. 66.
- 33:58Yeah, 66 there. You go, We're rocking.
- 34:00Through the 60s with Polly and bed actually tonight.
- 34:03I do have a question about that for you.
- 34:05You know, a bit of unfair to say it live, but who would you
- 34:08rather have? Polly or Bend?
- 34:10Oh. I mean, can I not be the meat in
- 34:14that sandwich? Have them both at the same time?
- 34:17Do you know? I think even I'll.
- 34:18Go there. Well, they're just.
- 34:23Needing me to say thank you so much for coming on today.
- 34:27Talking with you is just always glorious.
- 34:29Thank you for having me and. Thanks to everybody out there
- 34:31who chilled, tuned in and who made their their comments.
- 34:36There's lots of lovely people saying lovely things and thank
- 34:38yous, but it's been a pleasure to share it with you, Joe and
- 34:41everybody else out there. An additional.
- 34:43Thank you to those. I know there's loads of people
- 34:45that wanted to be here today but couldn't be and so hello to you
- 34:49people watching this after the event is going to be here on
- 34:52YouTube so you can watch it anytime.
- 34:54I hope you enjoy the show. Yeah, and we should also.
- 34:57Give a special shout out to Joe Allen, who literally got up at
- 35:004:00 AM because it's in a different country to to come and
- 35:03listen to us. That means the world to us,
- 35:06Daniel, Rosie says. He loves the live hamster chats.
- 35:09Mikey and Janie says awesome, this feels very light.
- 35:11I'm stripping the pair of us now, but Mikey and Janie says
- 35:14awesome stuff lads. Beebel Pete, fantastic, thank
- 35:17you so much. Mark Cochrum.
- 35:19Thank you. Splendid chats both of you.
- 35:21Well, you can go away with your head big today.
- 35:23You know absolutely what a. Lovely bunch of people know what
- 35:26head I'm talking about. There Anderson Carroll says
- 35:28thanks for the chat been great fun.
- 35:30Glad started following hamster this year.
- 35:31I'm so glad you did as well. Join us next time.
- 35:36I'm going to be doing this with Cy Heart and we're doing a
- 35:40spiritual successor to the 10th planet in no way shape or form
- 35:45Time and the Rani. Amazing.
- 35:48I will be shooting him for that. We'll catch you next time.
- 35:52Lads, thank you very much. Thanks everybody.
- 35:55How do I turn this thing off? Oh, in stream?
- 36:00There we go, There we go. Bye everyone, bye bye.
